Corbett National Park is divided into five eco-tourism zones for proper management of tourism activities in the tiger reserve area. Dhikala zone, Bijarani zone, Jhirna zone, Dhela zone, and Durga Devi zone are the zones. Forest officials from the Corbett Tiger Reserve coordinate the safari tour in two shifts in all eco-tourism areas.

A small number of safari jeeps are permitted in each zone. To ensure that tourist traffic is uniformly distributed in all areas. Each site has its natural beauty and wildlife , as well as its natural charm. All of the zones are part of the same ecological land. Tiger sightings are more or less equal in each region, with a minor difference in topography.

Table of Contents

List of the 6 Most Popular Safari (Tourism) Zones in Corbett National Park:

Everyone needs to visit Jim Corbett National Park because it is a wildlife sanctuary. Every year, the park is inundated with visitors from all over the world, not just from India. Corbett is divided into several safari areas, including.

  • The Dhikala Zone: is 18 kilometers from the Ramnagar area.
  • Jhirna Zone: Jhirna Gate is 16 kilometers from Ramnagar.
  • Bijrani Zone: The Bijrani zone’s entry gate is only a kilometer away from the Ramnagar area.
  • Dhela Zone: In November 2014, Dhela, a new eco-tourism zone in Corbett National Park, was added to the tiger reserve zone.
  • The Durga Devi Zone: Entry Gate is 35 kilometers from Ramnagar city.

1. The Dhikala Zone

The Dhikala Zone, Jim Corbett National Park

Among all the tourist zones of the Corbett National Park, the Dhikala zone maintains a celebrity status. It is the most popular zone for both day and night safaris and stays at the Dhikala forest rest house. The Dhikala region, situated on the outskirts of the Patil Dun valley, is the largest zone of the Corbett National Park and is home to a rich range of flora and fauna.

This zone’s landscape, which includes vast grasslands known as Chaurs, thick Sal tree forest, and numerous Ramganga River channels, provides an enchanting view of nature. The panoramic view of the vast valley with the Kanda ridge in the background is truly breathtaking. It is the most popular option for wildlife lovers for a night’s stay because it is considered the best zone for tiger sightings. Other species often seen in this area include wild elephants, spotted deer, wild pigs, hog deer, and barking deer. Read Also: Top 10 Things To Do on your Trip to Jim Corbett

This zone is renowned for its calm and serene ambiance within the trees, enriched by the eye-catching landscape. The wide variety of wildlife species found in this area distinguishes it as a distinct Corbett zone.

The Bijrani zone’s topography is just as appealing as the Dhikala zone’s, with vast Grasslands, dense Sal forest, and numerous water streams. Along with the stunning scenery, this zone is renowned for having many tigers, making it a prime spot for tiger sightings. In this zone, day visitors can participate in a Jeep safari. The location has a mixed topography, with thick forests of trees such as Sal, Haldu, Bahera, Rohini, Kusum, vast grasslands, and various water bodies.

You can find animals such as the Royal Bengal tiger, leopards, wild elephants, Nilgai, various species of deer, wild bears, and multiple species of reptiles and birds in this district. Elephants, deer, sambars, Nilgai, and other herbivore species can be found roaming freely here. Though it is a buffer zone and sightings of tigers or leopards are rare, these dangerous animals are occasionally seen here searching for prey.

Useful tips for safari in Jim Corbett National Park

There are some things one must keep in mind while having safari in Jim Corbett National Park. Or, for that matter, any national park.

  • Don’t make noise as it agitates the animals. Or, they might get over cautious and hide out of sight.
  • Wear neutral color cloths that helps you blend with the surroundings. If it is difficult to spot you, the animals will have their guards down. And chances of spotting them increases.
  • Don’t get down your vehicle . Remain seated in your vehicle in all conditions, maintain your calm in all situations, even if an animal comes too close or jumps on your vehicle 🙂
  • Always go for safari with authorised vehicles which has trained driver and guide accompanying it.
  • It’s not advisable to take very little kids (< 4 years old) on jungle safari. As the roads are very bumpy and almost non-existent. Which can be a very rough experience for them and cause stomach upset, motion sickness etc.
  • If you are very prone to motion sickness and like to avoid bumpy rides then don’t plan for the core zones of safari inside the jungle.
  • Stay at least for two nights where you want to take safari. As the safaris generally happen early in the morning or later in the afternoon. And span around 3 hours or more. So, the best itinerary will be to reach your destination on day 1. Relax and rest. Then take an early morning safari on day 2. The chances of spotting animals is highest in morning time. After coming back from safari you can rest for the day and catchup on your sleep. And then checkout on day 3.
  • Private vehicles are not allowed inside Jim Corbett National Park.

How to reach Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park is well connected by road from all the major cities like New Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, and also to nearby tourist places like Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Nainital, Almora, Ranikhet and Bhimtal etc. You can take a bus to Ramnagar or even to Jim Corbett National Park from these places. And you can also take a private taxi or drive yourself. A road trip from New Delhi to Jim Corbett National Park takes around 4.5 hrs. From Ranikhet or Nainital or Rishikesh to Jim Corbett National Park takes only around 2.5 hrs.

Ramgarh is the nearest railway station some 12 km from Jim Corbett National Park. From here, you can get taxi for Jim Corbett National Park.

The nearest airports are New Delhi and Dehradun.

On our trip to Uttarakhand , we booked a round trip cab from New Delhi to Uttarakhand and back. This was the route we followed :

New Delhi -> Bhimtal -> Nainital -> Jim Corbett National Park -> Haridwar -> Rishikesh -> Dehradun -> Mussoorie -> New Delhi

What is the best time to visit Jim Corbett National Park

Except monsoon season, you can visit Jim Corbett National Park anytime of the year.

Summers are harsh. The temperature starts rising from the middle of March, and by April end or May, it even crosses 40 degree C. If you can bear the heat, summers make for a good time to spot the animals. As they tend to come out of their habitat more often, particularly to the bank of river and other water sources for water.

safari in jim corbett reviews

Winter season from November to Mid March makes for pleasant climate to explore Jim Corbett National Park.

From June to October, the core zones of Jim Corbett National Park remain closed for safari. So, plan your trip accordingly if you are visiting Jim Corbett National Park for safari. We visited here towards the last week of October. However, after gathering all the information, we decided to opt out of safari. Because, one, we were staying in Jim Corbett National Park for only one night. Which means it would be really hectic for us to take the safari. And number two, the core zones were not yet open which means chances of tiger spotting were bleak. We had a wonderful tiger safari experience in Bandhavgarh National Park on our MP road trip and were still content with it. So, we decided to give it a pass this time. And instead, enjoy a staycation in Jim Corbett National Park .

Where to stay in Jim Corbett National Park

From Government guest houses to luxury resort, Jim Corbett National Park has several stay options for all travellers. Some of them are located right on the highway while for some others, you might have to take a little detour and drive a little inside. Some resorts and properties are located right besides the Kosi river, with private access to the river banks. Depending on what is your prime goal for visiting Jim Corbett National Park, you can book an accommodation accordingly.

safari in jim corbett reviews

  • If you are going for a safari, book a stay near to your zone of safari which will help you with reaching the safari point without much hassle.
  • Otherwise, if you want to enjoy a staycation, book a resort near the river bank or one inside the jungle surrounded by greenery so that you can enjoy your staycation in the nature to its best.

We stayed at Tarangi Resort Jim Corbett and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. This property had river access, nice campus with lots of activities arranged for the day, nice food and spacious rooms. There is a safari starting point right outside the property entrance.

How to Visit Jim Corbett National Park: Planning a Safari That Doesn’t Suck

This post may contain affiliate links. This just means I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you for helping them promote their product or service. I don’t endorse any services I don’t personally use or recommend.

I felt cheated. Here I was surrounded by tigers, elephants, bears, and more…but the loud clanking motor of the canter safari kept all nearby animals safely concealed in the thick jungle. Not only was this a poor safari experience for me— it can’t be good for the animals. Having shelled out $200 for this little adventure, I had much higher hopes for the ethics and overall feel of the tiger safari. But there is a way to spot wild tigers in Jim Corbett ethically.

India has more than 3,200 wild tigers lurking in its national parks. This is more than 75% of the world’s wild tiger population. But not all of India’s tiger safaris are created equal. And since this attraction tops most travelers’ India bucketlist — it’s important to find a way to do it ethically. If you want to plan a tiger safari that doesn’t suck in Jim Corbett National Park here are my tips for an ethical & enjoyable experience.

You can also spot wild lions in India’s Gir National Park on an ethical safari. Read my guide for more info!

Your Guide to Jim Corbett National Park

Fun fact: Jim Corbett was an Indian-born Brit who was most well-known as a master tiger hunter. Not exactly what we would call conservation today. But back in the early 1900s Jim Corbett tracked man-eating tigers expertly and protected the small villages of Uttar Pradesh. Despite his dubious conservation techniques (at the time there were MANY more tigers in Indian jungles), he was responsible for establishing India’s very first national park (this one) to protect the unique species inside it.

Is Jim Corbett the BEST National Park to Spot Wild Tigers

Truthfully, it’s a toss-up.

We went on two group safaris in Jim Corbett and didn’t see a single tiger. We did however see wild elephants, jackals, and lots of Chital & Sambar deer.

I think *if* you can plan ahead and organize a private safari with an overnight stay inside the park (as I describe below) this IS the best park to visit to see tigers.

Otherwise— you might as well join a more convenient group safari in Ranthambore National Park. It might not be perfect as far as conditions for the tigers go, but the money goes to protect the tiger’s habitat and the number of visitors per day is limited to try and reduce our impact. They are doing their best.

The Pros of Visiting Jim Corbett National Park

  • Largest # of tigers per square km.
  • Fewer tourists than other national parks.
  • Near (ish) popular tourist destinations like Rishikesh + Delhi.

Technically speaking, Jim Corbett NP has the highest density of wild tigers in all of India. And therefore the world. This means you have a great chance of seeing one of you plan your safari right. If done correctly, this park also offers an ethical way to see tigers in the wild. Due to its proximity to Delhi, Ranthambore is the most popular national park and therefore has LOTS of tourists that visit. This isn’t great for the tigers. JC offers a great lesser visited alternative.

The Cons of Visiting Jim Corbett National Park

  • Must plan super far in advance if you want a true safari.
  • Questionable elephant ethics in the areas within and around the park.

There were definitely some things I didn’t like about Jim Corbett National Park. For starters, the price is pretty astronomical when compared to other tiger parks across India. Secondly, I felt that the animals were NOT the focus of the group safaris. They were simply driving a route and if you happened to see an animal that was incidental.

Another thing I really disliked about Jim Corbett is that the national park staff have several captive elephants that they use for work within the park boundaries. Apparently even riding them to get around and access exceptionally bushy areas. Elephant rides and safaris are also quite prominent just outside the park too which is a bummer.

Scroll down to read the type of Jim Corbett NP safari that I DO recommend. Hint: it’s NOT a canter.

What Animals Are You Most Likely to See in Jim Corbett?

Even if you don’t see tigers inside Jim Corbett you will probably see wild elephants because the park has a huge population. And they are relatively easy to spot since they like to follow the park trails for easier movement. You’ll also probably see tropical birds, chital deer, sambar deer, jackal, mongoose, grey langurs, rhesus macaques, and barking deer.

A langur feeding in the grass alongside some deer at Jim Corbett National Park

You *could* also see leopards, Asiatic black bears, Indian pangolins, fishing cats, and Himalayan black bears. It’s unlikely, but they are all technically found within the park.

How to Plan the Best Jim Corbett National Park Safari

Alright, so this is the situation. There are three kinds of safaris inside Jim Corbett National Park. The park itself is divided into 8 ecotourism zones with different safari options available in each zone.

1. The Canter Safari.

This is only available in the Dhikala zone. A canter is a large 20-person open-air bus and the most popular type of safari in the park. Dhikala is the deepest center region of the national park and the most popular zone because of the high likelihood of spotting a tiger.

A large bus about half full of tourists ready for their safari

2. The private jeep safari.

This is available in all zones of the park except for Dhikala . One jeep fits up to 8 people and is reserved in advance for your group. These safari leave 2-3 times per day depending on the zone and only allow 30 vehicles inside each zone at any given time period.

3. The overnight safari.

This is the only private jeep option available in the Dhikala zone. It’s the same as above BUT you’ll sleep overnight at the ranger station within Jim Corbett to maximize your time in the park. You need to reserve this FAR in advance. It’s the first to sell out and for good reason. This is the kind of safari I recommend to those who want a good chance at spotting a tiger in an ethical way.

Which Zone of Jim Corbett National Park is Best?

Dhikala is the best zone for seeing both tigers and wild elephants. Therefore it is the best zone in the park. Bijrani is the next best option if you want to book two safaris or are unable to secure a coveted overnight safari spot.

Map of Jim Corbett National Park Zones

What Safari NOT to do in Jim Corbett

Whatever you do, do not do the canter safari in Dhikala Zone. Canter safaris suck. They scare away all the animals. The assigned guides didn’t even bother looking for a single animal. And the people on board our canter were loud and seemed to not care about scaring away the wild animals we came to see. I think that local tourists (who get safaris for far cheaper) were more interested in just getting out and enjoying nature rather than spotting wildlife. They actually insisted we leave slightly early just to get some chai. Not ideal for those of us who had to shell out over $100 for the safari.

The Dhikala Zone is deep within the park and takes 2 hours just to reach it. Therefore, by the time the canter reaches the zone you have to turn right back around and drive the same way you came. Basically, the way the safari is set up is awful and not designed for optimal animal viewing. It’s just a waste of time.

The Best Safari in Jim Corbett

The overnight private jeep safari in the Dhikala zone is the ONLY way to go.

This is the most expensive option BUT you are *almost* guaranteed to see tigers. You’ll get an early morning safari as you enter the park, get to chill at the scenic ranger station during the mid-day heat, take an optional afternoon safari (for a small extra fee), sleep at the ranger station, and then take one more morning safari on your way out of the park. This is without a doubt the best bang for your buck and gives you a much less crowded experience.

Hot Tip: You must book your overnight stay 60 days in advance. This is what got us. We never plan this far ahead and by the time we thought to book it — it was full weeks in advance. It’s worth it to plan your trip around this experience if you want to see some wildlife.

How to Book Your Safari

Booking a safari in India as a foreigner is not super straightforward. You can’t use the online booking portal without an Indian bank card. We had these same problems with Gir National Park . That means you’ll have to contact Jim Corbett National Park via WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Phone: +91 99712 68452

A view of a river cutting through yellow grasslands with a mountain behind it.

Cost Breakdown of Jim Corbett National Park Safari

We chose to do 2 safaris within the park when we realized that the overnight stay in Dhikala was sold out. We thought this would maximize our time within the park and we would see more animals. That isn’t really how it worked out and honestly, I recommend skipping the park if you can’t do the overnight stay.

The cost of an overnight stay for two people in a double bed in Dhikala is 20,000 rupees or $243.

The cost of the canter safari in Dhikala is 4200 rupees ($51) per person and the private safari in Bijrani is 10,000 rupees ($121) per jeep. The other safari zones within the park have comparable private jeep prices. This can be an affordable option if you have a large group to split the cost with.

Best Time to Visit Jim Corbett National Park

November – June the park is open for visitors. During the monsoon season, the park is closed.

The best time to visit is December – March when the weather is cool. This is good for spotting animals in the early morning as well as comfortable for you as a visitor. By June temperatures are soaring and it makes a mid-day safari really unenjoyable.

Getting to Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett NP is not in the most convenient location. It’s not super close to any major tourist destination but it’s also not ridiculously far away when you consider the scale of India and other tiger reserves in the country. The two most likely destinations you’ll be coming from are Delhi and Rishikesh.

This park is far more easily accessible if you have your own mode of transport. But assuming you don’t— these are your options.

Getting to Jim Corbett from Rishikesh

There’s no quick and easy overnight bus between these destinations. There are two common routes.

Taxi: You can take a 5-6 hour taxi for 6,000 rupees ($73). An alright option if you have people to split the ride with.

Series of buses: You can take a local bus from Rishikesh to Haridwar. Then from Haridwar to Ramradar. This is the closest town to Jim Corbett. From here you’ll have to take a rickshaw to your accommodation. The price of these two buses is around 370 rupees ($3.80) per person in total. This journey takes around 6-8 hours but it’s the route I recommend.

Getting to Jim Corbett from Delhi

You have lots of options from Delhi. You can take a direct bus booked from  12.go.Asia  or take a train/bus combination via the Ramnagar Rail Station.

Where to Stay Near Jim Corbett National Park

You’re going to need a place to stay before your overnight safari. We stayed at Camp Hornbill for a lot of reasons. It’s a lovely eco-conscious stay in the middle of the wilderness whose proceeds go to support the local community. It’s actually owned by a resident of the teeny village in the area.

Camp Hornbill

Small orange mud hut cabin at Camp Hornbill

If you’re going to make the effort to stay here I recommend giving yourself 2 days outside the safari. You’ll have a chance to chill in the river, lounge in your luxury mud-style huts, eat delish local food, and explore the area with their on-site naturalist to spot some exotic bird life.

It’s a rare example of peace and quiet in nature in India.

Be warned: Getting to and from the property will cost you about 1,000 rupees in rickshaw fare unless you’re a good haggler. It’s not the most budget-friendly stay but it’s renowned across India for being a model of local sustainable tourism and I highly recommend it. Another excellent stay if you’re willing to splurge while in India is Dera Amer in Jaipur.

Overall, we could have better planned our own visit to Jim Corbett National Park. We don’t want you to make the same mistake. It’s definitely the best place to spot India’s wild tigers if the proper preparation and planning are done. Our favorite part of the experience was our lovely stay at Camp Hornbill. But follow these tips and you can have the best of both worlds.

Jim Corbett National Park: A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Toshita Sahni

Jim Corbett National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

The Himalayas have much more to offer than gorgeous mountainscapes and crisp weather. Its lower foothills, especially in Uttarakhand , are a haven for wildlife—buzzing with animal and birding activity all year round. Therefore, it is no surprise that India’s first-ever national park was established here in 1936. Today, we know this park as the Jim Corbett National Park, part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve. Unlike many other reserves in the country, Corbett is not dominated by flat, dry lands. It derives its charm from the variety of its landscapes as well as its biodiversity.

If you’re planning to visit India’s oldest national park, there’s much to keep in mind about the safari zones, timings, and regulations. Whether you’re hell-bent on spotting a tiger or just want to enjoy the serenity of the forest, it helps to have a few local insights. Naturalist Yogesh Nainwal , who is armed with six years of work experience, shares tips on what to keep in mind when planning a safari at Jim Corbett.

What makes Jim Corbett National Park special?

One of the most distinctive features of Corbett is its terrain. While some zones have steep ascents and descents, others have plains that are covered with different types of grasslands. The landscape within a single zone itself may vary greatly. Serpentine rivulets from the Ramganga river crisscross certain areas—an important aspect as animals tend to seek out these water bodies for a drink. The proximity of the Kalagarh reservoir is an added advantage. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the critically endangered gharial (a species of fish-eating crocodile) near the banks of the Ramganga river.

A great source of pride for the locals is also Corbett’s historical contribution to wildlife conservation. Back in 1973, the flagship conservation program Project Tiger was launched from this national park. The draft for tiger conservation applied in other reserves across the country originates from Corbett.

What to spot at Jim Corbett National Park?

Jim Corbett National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

The Royal Bengal tiger is the key attraction of the national park, drawing many visitors from all over the country and abroad. Besides tigers, the most sought-after animals are leopards, elephants, sambar deer and bears. According to the last census, there are around 55 mammal species in this reserve. Sightings of some lesser-known ones, such as the yellow-throated marten and the Indian pangolin, are rare but possible, says Nainwal.

Over 600 species of birds are at the park, making the park a birder’s paradise. Keep an eye out (preferably with binoculars) for cormorants, grey herons, egrets, cattle egrets, white-necked and black-necked storks, crested serpent eagles, black-winged kites, shikras, Himalayan vultures, spotted owlets, fish owls, and the scops owls. You may also get the chance to spot rare birds such as the great slaty woodpecker, ultramarine flycatcher, ibisbill, wallcreeper, Hodgson’s bushchat, bright-headed cisticola and rosy minivet, among others.

“The density of the sal forest here is very high, which makes the region a paradise for birding. However, this density also makes it slightly harder to spot animals. You have to work harder to get sightings, but in the end, it is all worth it. The guides here understand how to track the movements of the tigers, as they tend to follow specific trails as part of their daily routine. They are habituated to those particular paths because they are territorial animals,” says Nainwal.

Nainwal has had many special sightings during his time here, but the most special one is of a tiger and her cubs jumping and playing in the water. While the tiger is an important draw, he says it’s important to not focus on just the big cats. “Corbett has a lot more to offer. Some shows and documentaries make people think that they will get to spot animals, up close, as soon as they enter the park. But they forget that this is a jungle, not a zoo. Be patient,” he says.

Jim Corbett National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

What's the best time to go to Jim Corbett?

If you want to spot mammals, Nainwal recommends visiting in the summer between March and June. During this time, the chances of a good sighting increase manifold because the grasslands start to dry up and the visibility increases. Soon after the monsoon , the density of vegetation is very high. In this case, the only way to spot a tiger is if it comes out onto the road. While mammal sightings may be harder from November to February, winter is the perfect time for spotting migratory birds like the ruddy shelduck, storks and ibisbill.

How many safaris should you do during a 3-night stay?

Nainwal suggests visiting for four days and booking at least three to four safaris. He advises against back-to-back safaris on the same day as each ride stretches between four to five hours, and it could get hectic. Alternate between morning and evening slots on different days.

What are the safari slots at Jim Corbett?

There are two safari slots: morning and afternoon. At present, the morning safari is from 6:30am to 10:30am, whereas the afternoon safari is from around 1:30pm to 5:30pm. Their timings could vary according to seasons as well as zones. While the slot lasts for four hours, the hours you’d like to spend in the park ultimately is your call. However, all jeeps are required to exit the forest on time or risk a heavy fine.

The first hour in the morning inside the forest is very important and you will get the best experience then, says Nainwal. So, resist the urge to hit that snooze button and get ready to enter the jungle as soon as the shift begins. Similarly, in the evening, the guide recommends remaining inside the forest as long as you can till the shift ends around sunset.

How to book a safari permit at Jim Corbett and how much does it cost?

Visitors can book permits for jeep safaris and canter rides on the official  website . Bookings open 45 days in advance for Indians and 90 days in advance for foreigners.  For Indians interested in a day safari, the permit fee per vehicle is Rs1,100*. For canter rides, the tariff is Rs1,300*. The rates for foreigners are higher in each case.

While booking a permit, you will be asked for information about the jeep’s occupants. In one jeep, a maximum of six adult guests and 2 children can travel. Note: while applying for a permit, the system does not allow you to register children below the age of five, but they will be allowed to enter the park. Whoever’s details are entered first will receive updates about the jeep, etc. on the registered mobile number.

How to book a jeep and guide at Corbett?

Jeeps are assigned online after booking a permit and the fee for a jeep is Rs2,800*. Guides are assigned at the gate and are compulsory—you are not allowed to enter the forest without one. Their fee is Rs800*. If you wish to book your own guide , you will still have to pay the fee for the assigned guide.

These booking procedures could get complicated and visitors often prefer to book via local agents or the hotels they are staying at. For a stipulated fee, this third party handles the entire process of booking the permit, jeep and guide.

Which zones are the best at Corbett Tiger Reserve?

You can choose from eight zones in Corbett, which are fully functional from 15 November to 15 June. Certain zones, such as Jhirna and Dhela, are open year-round. Nainwal says the chances to spot animals are equal everywhere. But for the best sightings, he recommends exploring Garjiya first, followed by Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, and Durga Devi.

Jim Corbett National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

In the Durga Devi Zone, 70-80% of the terrain is hilly and steep, with sharp turns and hairpin bends. This zone is preferred by bird enthusiasts as the sal forests teem with birds such as the chestnut-bellied nuthatch, white-crested laughing thrush, great slaty woodpecker, white-rumped shama, white-capped redstart, and plumbeous water redstart. The Garjiya and Dhikala zones are also great for birding.

The Dhikala zone is known for its extensive grasslands that attract deer, bears, tigers, martens as well as birds. Here, you can also spot the rare gharial on the banks of the Ramganga river. This zone is only accessible via canters (16-seater small buses). If you want to explore it by jeep, you have to book a night stay at a lodge inside the Dhikala zone.

Jim Corbett National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Besides jeep drives, what else can you do in Corbett?

If you are staying in the Dhikuli range, Nainwal suggests going for one of the many nature walks conducted by local guides. “These walks span two or three hours, and are a great way to get acquainted with the locals, their culture and their traditions. You may also get a chance to taste their food.” You can make inquiries at your hotel or at the safari office to book a guide. The nature trails that traverse the Kosi River and lead to the Garjia Temple are scenic and are perfect for bird-watching. Since it is prohibited to get down from safari jeeps (except at designated areas) inside park limits, such walks offer you the rare opportunity to explore the surrounding areas on foot.

There are also many adventure activities available in the vicinity, the most recent one being  hot-air balloon rides . Adventure lovers can try out river rafting on the Kosi river during the monsoon season (July-October). Besides adventure activities, you can visit the Corbett Museum near the Dhangadi Gate (the entrance of the Dhikala Zone). If you’re interested in knowing more about Jim Corbett himself, head to the heritage museum dedicated to him in Kaladhungi.

What are the best hotels in Jim Corbett?

The Dhikala, Garjiya, and Bijrani zones are about 10-20 minutes away from most hotels in the Dhikuli range. The Taj Corbett Resort & Spa  (doubles from Rs14,480*, book here ) is located on the bank of the Kosi river. You can enjoy outdoor activities, including hikes and camping, designed to complement your safari outings. If you have chosen the Jhirna, Dhela or the Bijrani zone, head to Jim's Jungle Retreat  (doubles from Rs20,000*, book here ),  which is a 10-minute drive from the Dhela zone. The 15-acre property has 18 jungle cottages and bungalow-style lodges with views of grasslands, forests and the wildlife. Aahana–The Corbett Wilderness  (doubles from Rs22,000*, including all meals and taxes, book here ) , which is a 15-minute drive from Dhela, is an eco-resort with rustic-style rooms, suites and villas. The hotel also features a naturopathy centre offering a range of spa treatments.

Safari Zones in Jim Corbett National Park

Safari Zones in Jim Corbett

Safari Zones in Jim Corbett are divided into six different ecotourism zones so tourism activities can be better managed in the tiger reserve area.

The safari tour at Corbett tiger reserve is organized in two shifts by forest officials in all ecotourism zones. A limited number of safari jeeps are allowed per zone to ensure an equal distribution of tourist flow throughout the reserve.

Each of India’s tiger reserves has a unique landscape and wildlife. However, the chances of sighting a tiger are approximately equal in every reserve, with only slight variation depending on the terrain. All the reserves are located in the same geographical region, after all.

Safari Zones in Jim Corbett

Corbett safari zones are the Dhikala zone, Bijrani zone, Jhirna Zone, Garjiya Zone, Sitabani Zone, Pakhro Zone, Dhela zone, and Durga Devi zone. It helps to protect the natural environment and the wildlife that lives there. Each with its unique flora and fauna for visitors to experience and explore.

Dhikala Zone

Dhikala safari zone is one of the most popular tourist zones in Corbett National Park, and for a good reason. It’s the perfect place for a day safari or a night stay in the Dhikala Forest rest house. Plus, there’s the highest chance of spotting a tiger!

The Dhikala zone, situated on the edge of the Patil Dun valley, is the largest in the Corbett National Park. It is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.

This zone, made up of vast grasslands called Chaurs, a dense forest of Sal trees, and different channels of the Ramganga River, provides you with a stunning view of nature.

The Kanda Ridge offers a panoramic view of the valley, making it a popular choice for night stays among wildlife enthusiasts who come here hoping to catch a glimpse of the resident tigers.

Other animals, such as wild elephants, spotted deer, wild pigs, hog deer, and barking deer, are mostly seen in this region. You may see the tiger chasing a deer in the grassland or beside the water streams if you’re lucky. No jeep safaris are available at Dhikala, but if you’re looking for peace and quiet, you might enjoy visiting this part of the park.

The Canter safari is an open-bus tour through the Dhikala zone offered by the forest officials that allows up to 16 people per bus, with a total of 2 buses running per shift. Enjoy a day exploring the Canter safari and all the Dhikala zone offers!

To catch the canter safari at the Dhikala zone, you must book your seat in advance and visit the entry gate.

Bijrani Zone

Bijrani safari zone is a must-see for anyone interested in seeing a breathtaking natural landscape or getting the chance to see the king of the Corbett forest, the Royal Bengal tiger.

The landscape in this zone is so beautiful that it’s no wonder it’s the most popular one after Dhikala. Even though it gets a lot of visitors from day safari tourists, it’s still known for its calming and relaxing atmosphere.

The Bijrani zone is a unique region in the Corbett National Park due to the diverse range of wildlife that inhabits the area. With sprawling grasslands, thick sal forests, and various water streams, the topography of the Bijrani zone is just as beautiful as the Dhikala zone.

The Jeep safari is available for day visitors in this zone, which offers the best tiger sighting experience because of the many tigers living there. Along with the enchanting view, this zone allows you to see these magnificent animals up close!

The day safari can be booked online to enter the Bijrani zone. Although the elephant safari is no longer available, it could be accessed by paying the required fees on-site on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The day safari is organized into two separate shifts, each with a maximum of 30 safari jeeps allowed. Each jeep can carry a maximum of 6 adults and two children, not including the driver and guide/naturist. And a jeep tour guide is required to enter the park.

Jhirna Zone

Jhirna safari zone , located on the southern edge of the Corbett National Park, was included in the tiger reserve in 1994. Despite this, it has become immensely popular among wildlife enthusiasts.

The Jhirna zone is one of the most visited zones among other Corbett safari zones because it is open for day tourists throughout the year. This region is known for its Tiger sightings and a wide range of other wildlife species.

Besides the revered tigers, wild bears are another main attraction in this zone.

The park is home to various animals, including wild elephants, sambar deer, and various bird species.

The safari allows two shifts per day with 30 jeeps maximum per shift. You can book the Jeep safari online for up to six adults and two children per Jeep.

According to the rule, a naturist/guide must accompany each jeep.

The Dhela safari zone is the latest addition to the safari zones in Jim Corbett. It was opened in December 2014 and remains open throughout the year, making it a great option for tourists looking to experience a safari tour.

The safari tour will go as planned as long as the weather cooperates. The zone consists of different topography types, including dense trees of trees like Sal, Haldu, Bahera, Rohini, and Kusum, along with large grasslands and various water bodies.

Home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, leopards, wild elephants, nilgai, deer, wild bears, and reptiles, this zone also has various fauna. Various species of birds make this place their home too.

Corbett National park is especially well known for the abundance of bird species and is often considered the best place for birding enthusiasts. If you’re interested in seeing some of these rare and beautiful birds for yourself, you can book a day safari to visit this zone and explore all that the park has to offer.

In addition to the safari entry permit, you will need to book a Jeep and a guide to enter the park.

Durga Devi Zone

The Durga Devi safari zone is a nature lover’s paradise, with enchanting natural surroundings and a hilly landscape.

Situated on the northeast periphery of the Corbett forest, the zone is highly rich in species of flora and fauna. The streams of the Ramganga River and Mandal River enrich the water bodies of this wild forest, adding to its beauty.

The main attractions of this zone are the majestic Tigers, leopards, wild elephants, and Otters – primarily found near the Domunda Bridge. This area is a must-visit for any animal lover!

The Mahseer fish, a popular river fish species, can be found in the streams in the Durga Devi zone. This zone is also home to many bird species, making it a perfect destination for bird-watching enthusiasts.

Various bird species can be found in this zone, including the Gray Headed Fishing Eagle, Maroon Orile, Black-chinned Yuhina, Long-Tailed Broadbill, Slaty Blue Flycatcher, and Bar-tailed Tree Creeper.

A zone is an excellent place for bird-watching enthusiasts. Jeep safari is organized for this zone, and tourists can also stay overnight at the Lohachaur Forest Guest House in this zone after making a prior booking.

Sitabani Forest Zone (Buffer Zone)

Sitabani safari zone is a beautiful Reserve Forest located just outside the Corbett Tiger Reserve area. The Buffer zone is open to everyone, and it’s the perfect place to escape city life’s hustle and bustle.

This zone’s landscape has a rich natural view, including dense forests, river streams, and many old temples. You’ll find plenty of herbivore animals like elephants, deer, sambars, Nilgai, and others roaming freely here.

Though the chances of seeing a tiger or leopard are very low in this area, there have been cases where these dangerous predators have been spotted while searching for their next meal.

There are approximately 600 bird species that can be found in this particular zone, the majority of which are migratory birds.

The zone is a terrific spot for bird-watching enthusiasts. With a massive area encompassing many villages, you’ll be enchanted by the idyllic and peaceful atmosphere of nature.

Although this zone is home to many wonders of nature, it is often missed by tourists who would rather visit the tiger reserve area.

The Sitabani Temple, an old temple located in the forest, is protected and maintained by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). Along with this, there is also a very old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Many pilgrims visit these temples annually, making exploring the forest and taking a night safari a memorable experience. The Sitabani forest will give you an adrenaline rush because of its quiet and eerie ambiance. You will be thrilled at the prospect of encountering any wild animal.

This zone can be explored via Jeep safari, elephant safari, or walking. Private vehicles are also allowed in this zone.

At the entry gate of Teda Village, you must pay the entry fee to enter the forest reserve area. After exploring the forest, you will exit from the Paulgarh gate, which is about 60 km away from where you entered.

Garjiya Zone

Tourists visiting Corbett National Park will not have to be disappointed if the safari seat is unavailable or the booking is full.

The new Ringora Zone or Garjia safari zone in Corbett started the safari in November to keep up with the increasing trend of tourists. Girija is a new safari zone that has been added and is now available for tourists to enjoy the safari.

So far, the tourism safari zone in Corbett National Park includes Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Durgadevi, and Sitabani. The Corbett administration has opened the Girija tourism zone with limited safari seats to accommodate more tourists.

Wildlife lovers are in for a treat as a new zone is set to open during peak tourism season, just in time for safari season! The practice of opening a new zone has been pending for quite some time, but now it’s finally coming to fruition.

The Garjiya jungle area of the Jim Corbett National Park is a popular tourist destination known for its rich variety of flora and fauna.

In terms of safari tourist preference, Garjiya is a tough competition to the Dhikala tourism zone. This is popular for its stunning landscape and a very quiet and serene place.

The dense forest, with its natural beauty, amazes visitors. This region is one of the most tiger-rich areas of Corbett Park.

Felt Cheated

I had booked my Safari package in March for my May trip well 2 months in advance through their Delhi booking office. My biggest mistake!! I was booked for 2 nights with 1 afternoon jeep safari the day I arrive in Bijrani zone. Next morning Canter safari in Dhikala zone & same day evening jeep safari in Jhirna zone. I made my full payment in advance without negotiating on price. They arranged my stay at Corbett Wild iris resort (a lovely stay at the resort no issues here at all). $ days prior to my travel I get a call from their Delhi booking office saying due to Covid the Canter safari has been cancelled and I can in place take a jeep safari at an extra price. LIARS!! The Canter Safari was operational. They also changed the zone for both my jeep safaris. Gave me the very hilly zone of Durga Devi which was 1 hr 30 min drive to the gate from my resort. Me & my daughter were highly disappointed as the drive to the gate zone tired us out. They changed our next day safari zone to Jhirna Phato zone. WHY ?? Please do your bookings for Safari online do not trust the Delhi office booking guys. They had no remorse for their huge mess up intentional or unintentional best known to them. Will never recommend nor do any safari bookings with them ever in future.

Strictly avoidable, there is so much human movement in the jungles that except deers all other animals go in hiding. Even the toilets for the ladies are very dirty everywhere. Very pathetic in today's times when cleanliness is the mantra.

We're truly sorry to hear about your disappointing experience. Maintaining cleanliness is a priority, and we're taking immediate steps to address this issue. Your feedback is invaluable, and we're committed to ensuring a more pleasant environment for all visitors. We're working on enhancing our facilities to ensure a higher standard of cleanliness throughout. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

It was a nice ride right in middle of the jungle gives you the full feel. Felt so nice to be back with the nature, Driver was well experienced and guide was helpful as well. Definitely you might only spot few animals however have to keep in mind animals would move per their wish not ours.

Waste of time spacilly in aug to Dec month.safari is only jippsy ride in jungle .you can't see any animal .your guide show only foot mark of tiger .my friend visited 3rd time but no Tiger in reserve.

We apologize for your disappointing experience during your visit from August to December. We understand your frustration with the safari and not being able to spot animals. Ensuring wildlife sightings is challenging despite our guides' expertise. We're constantly working to enhance visitor experiences and appreciate your feedback. Please reach out directly, and we'll strive to make amends or offer alternatives for your future visits.

I visited Jim Corbett in December. It was very chilly and the open jeep ride was awesome. However, the main attraction of viewing beautiful animals in the jungle was a disappointment. I couldn't spot any animals may be primarily because it was winter and the animals don't come out in the open in winter.

Thank's for visit in Jim Corbett. Please visit in Dhikala Zone of Jim Corbett for better experience.

The jungle safari in Corbett in one hell of an experience. The wild nature you can feel, the fresh air, the view everything is amazing. We did safari from Jhirna gate from which we saw Valmiki Ashram (where Sita maiya stayed) and there is 3 dhara falls. That was one of the memorable trip. You must visit Jim corbett to experience wildlife.
