Travel & Leisure / Kevin Liang

Portable fans are a great way to stay cool on the go, packing a personal breeze to keep temperatures down. After all, heat and humidity can impact our health, mood, and overall experience, especially on scorching days. As a bonus, there’s no need to worry about outlets on the go, or tangled wires, as these devices can be ready to rock with a full charge before you leave home (or the hotel) — but also come in handy during summer power outages, too. They’re a worthy investment though you’ll want to prioritize durability, battery life, weight, and easy maintenance before you shop.

Whether you need a cooling companion for your office desk, while traveling or camping, or literally all the time, there’s a portable fan fit for your needs.

Best Overall

Honeywell turbo on the go personal fan.

This rechargeable fan can also run on AA batteries as a backup.

It only has one speed.

Small but mighty, this Honeywell personal fan is our top pick for its range and dual power sources. Although it only has one speed, the air can reach up to 4 feet so it’s not lacking in force. The fan is incredibly lightweight as well making it a great companion whether you bring it on warm-weather trips or use it right at home instead. It runs pretty quietly, so if it's white noise you’re after for sleeping, this might be the fan for you. We also love that it can be hung, carried, or propped up with the versatile built-in folding stand.

If you don’t have access to a USB port for charging, 4 AA batteries offer a solid backup and, since it uses a DC motor, it saves up to 50 percent in energy usage unlike those with an AC motor. Whether you’re packing this small fan in your luggage, toting it to the gym, or using it as a personal breeze on the deck, this Honeywell Turbo portable fan gets the job done.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery or 4 AA batteries (sold separately) | 4.7 x 5 x 12.5 inches | 0.04 pounds

Best Budget

Comfortness mini portable fan.

It has 4 speeds.

It doesn’t have the option for backup batteries.

We love how powerful the compact, lightweight ComfortneSS Mini Portable Handheld Fan is for its size. It folds up for easy storage in even a purse or small tote bag, and comes with a lanyard for wearing around your wrist or neck, too. The battery life is long-lasting with the ability to keep the breeze going all day long (for up to 15 hours on a full charge). This handheld fan offers fantastic value for the price point so you don’t have to dig too deep into those pockets to stay cool. Plus, the seven blades work to keep the air flowing at four speeds — low, medium, high, and strong — so you can choose your desired strength.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 2 x 3.5 x 4.2 inches | 0.37 pounds

Best Wearable

Jisulife neck fan.

It’s bladeless with hands-free cooling.

It takes 3-4 hours to charge.

Get yourself as close to the cooling device as possible with the Jisulife Four Turbo Neck Fan. With a twin-turbine design and 58 widely-shaped air outlets, you can keep cool on the go while choosing from three adjustable speed modes. The rechargeable battery can last up to 7 hours if charged to the max, and this wearable fan is a fantastic travel companion whether spending a hot afternoon at a football game or touring city sites abroad. The bladeless design makes it safer to use with much less of a chance to catch longer hairstyles. And, since it’s lightweight, it’s both comfortable to wear and packable for wherever you need a personal cooling device.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable lithium battery | 2.3 x 7.8 x 8.7 inches | 0.75 pounds

Best for Plane Travel

Jisulife handheld mini fan.

It can be used as a handheld or desktop fan.

The highest speed can be noisy.

We love the incredibly lightweight Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan for its versatility and three working speeds. One of our favorite features is the detachable fan cover that can be taken off for quick and easy cleaning. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 20 hours at the lowest speed and up to 5 hours at the highest speed. The compact size makes it super portable to throw in a bag without taking up too much room or adding a lot of weight. The bottom includes an anti-slip mat so it can also be used on a flat surface like a tray table or desk, in lieu of holding it. Additionally, a handy anti-trigger switch on the underside of the base will keep it from accidentally turning on when inside a purse or suitcase.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.8 x 3.4 x 6.2 inches | 0.38 pounds

Best for Camping

Coleman lighted tent fan.

It’s both a fan and a light in one.

The rechargeable power pack is sold separately.

Tents can get hot when camping in warm weather, but the Coleman CPX 6 Lighted Tent Fan helps keep the interior nice and cool for more comfortable sleeping. The versatile design allows it to stand up on the ground or be hung from the ceiling of your tent using the magnetic base and steel plate on the exterior. Soft foam blades keep things safe, and two speeds provide airflow on high or low. The light can be dimmed to a nightlight for children sleeping inside, but note that it’s a little heavier than other portable models so may be best for car camping when it doesn’t need to be hand carried along with other gear.

The Details: 4 D batteries (sold separately), CPX 6 rechargeable power cartridge, or CPX 6 A/C adapter cartridge | 10 x 5.5 inches | 3.025 pounds

Most Versatile

Jisulife handheld mini fan.

It’s a fan, flashlight, and power bank all in one.

The included lanyard is difficult to attach.

We love that the Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan isn’t just a cooling device, but also a power bank and flashlight. This multi-tool is pocket-sized, folding up into itself so it’s easy to tote around anywhere at all. The long-lasting battery can go for up to 21 hours on the lower speed and 14 hours on the high speed. We also like the automatic-stop safety feature just in case you touch the blades by accident. This handheld fan is perfect for travel as it can fit easily in your palm, is lightweight, and gives you the option of charging your phone or having a light by your side in a pinch.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.46 x 1.57 x 4.72 inches | 0.27 pounds

Best Bladeless

Conbola 11.8-inch desk fan.

It is stylish, sleek, and runs smoothly.

The battery doesn't last as long as other options.

Not only can bladeless fans be more energy-efficient, they’re also often safer and easier to clean, too. This Conbola Desk Fan is our top pick in this category with up to 9 hours of cool air flow when fully charged and 3 adjustable speeds, depending on your needs. The sleek design and touch button control looks nice, and the non-slip rubber bottom keeps it in place on a range of surfaces. This is a great option to put in a checked bag or bring for car travel due to its larger size, and no blades mean your hair can’t get easily caught if you get too close. It cleans with a damp cloth and comes in a handful of appealing colors as well.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 4.5 x 5.75 x 11.8 inches | 1.27 pounds

Best Clip-on

Skygenius mini desk fan.

It has 360 degrees of rotation for the preferred placement of airflow.

The battery life isn’t that long.

Clip on the SkyGenius Battery Operated Mini Desk Fan and enjoy a powerful airflow of up to 14.5 feet. The compact size makes it easy to take along wherever you’re going — on vacation, to the office, for camping, and more. This is a great option for clipping onto a stroller or within your car but any surface that can fit the thick clip would work, too. The portable fan can be fully charged in about 4.5 hours and lasts between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the speed you choose. This durable pick operates quietly on both the low and medium speeds, but a little louder on the high speed if sound’s a top consideration for you.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 4 x 6.2 x 8 inches | 0.6 pounds

Best With Mister

Comlife portable handheld misting fan.

It’s still lightweight despite the built-in 25-milliliter water tank.

There’s no lock option for the on/off button so you have to be careful it doesn’t accidentally turn on in your bag.

Sometimes you need a little spritz with your breeze and the Comlife Portable Handheld Misting Fan has come to the rescue. We appreciate that this model comes with a silicone seal to prevent water spillage in your bag when you transport it (especially since there’s no way to lock the power switch). It clocks in at around half a pound, so it’s lightweight and portable, particularly when folded up. The original setting rotates between misting and not misting every 5 minutes but the button is multifunctional and even has the option for a continuous mist, as desired. The small, included bottle makes it easy to refill the water tank on the go, too.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.46 x 4.13 x 8.86 inches | 0.57 pounds

Best for Indoors

Sharper image personal fan.

Sharper Image

You have the option to use the USB charge or plug it into the wall directly.

We wish it came with a remote so it could be controlled from afar.

We love that the Sharper Image USB Powered Personal Fan has a removable base and offers a rotating function for better airflow and circulation. When running this fan from the battery charge on its lowest speed, it can last a full 24 hours but the plug alternative lets it continue nonstop. The compact size is perfect for the office or home, especially while working at a desk. For a small fan, it’s fairly strong and keeps the area cool, all while being quiet, too.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery or wall plug | 10.5 x 11.2 x 4.3 inches | 2.2 pounds

Tips for Buying a Portable Fan

Consider the size and attachment types.

Your intended use will determine the best compactness and type. If you’re in the market for a portable fan to take on a vacation, it’s best to prioritize small devices that can fold up to pocket-sized or don’t take up too much space in your luggage. Also consider if you want a handheld fan, one with a stand, or something that can easily clip onto items like strollers. Many fans offer a few different carrying styles including attachable lanyards to go around a wrist or neck, too.

Look at performance and noise

Since we use portable fans for a variety of reasons in a range of settings, researching performance and noise level helps ensure you find the best one for your needs. Since most portable fans run on rechargeable batteries, it’s ideal to look for long battery life that will get you through most of the day. (Most portable fans can last up to 15-20 hours when used on the lowest speed.)

When using a portable fan at work, you’ll most likely want one that operates very quietly, such as a bladeless fan. When traveling, some people prefer the white noise to help them sleep, so a bit more noise is actually desired.

You’ll also want to evaluate how strong the airflow is and how far it goes; you won’t need something super forceful in a confined space like an airplane but, if you’re traveling somewhere like a theme park in Florida or heading on an African safari, purchasing a portable fan with a mister offers additional cooling in extreme temperatures.

Yes, you can bring a portable fan on an airplane in a carry-on or checked bag as long as the device is battery-operated, and complies with posted size restrictions .

Since portable fans differ in design and materials, it’s best to consult the manual for cleaning instructions for your specific model. If info is not provided, most portable fans can be cleaned well by using a vacuum duster attachment and a damp cloth. It’s best not to use cleaners that contain strong chemicals as that may damage the device. To prolong the lifespan, make sure you don’t overcharge the battery, always use the one it came with, and try to keep it out of the sun, particularly when charging.

Typically, you can expect a portable fan to last between 2 and 8 years. A portable fan’s lifespan will depend on the type you have, how often you use it, and how well you take care of it. If you leave your fan running all day, everyday, it will likely not last as long as something used sparingly. Rechargeable batteries can lose maximum potential power over time so it’s important to not overcharge them (i.e., leave them plugged in after they’ve reached full capacity). Sun exposure and water like rainfall can have an impact, too, and it’s wise to make sure not to use an indoor fan outdoors, as that can affect its lifespan as well. Additionally, cleaning your fan regularly according to the instructions provided always helps.

5 Best Portable Fans for Traveling [2024]: Stay cool on the road!

5 Best Portable Fans for Traveling [2024]: Stay cool on the road!

Loud hostels disrupting your sleep? Long lines in the heat melting your glow? Read on for the best portable and handheld fans to keep you cool on your travels.

best travel fan for europe

For many people, traveling with a fan is a must. If you are used to sleeping with white noise, the hum of a fan can do the trick to help you get better sleep. It can also be the key to helping drown out that one person who always ends up snoring in your hostel. For others,  combating the summer heat of  Europe  or the humidity of  Asia , a mini or handheld fan can be a lifesaver. But if you like to travel light, it can be hard to find just the right portable fan that will tuck away in your luggage or carryon.

In this review, we'll take a look at several different styles of mini fans, handheld fans, and portable fans that travelers love and best of all, take up little space in your luggage.

travel fans

What to Look for in a portable travel fan

There are many different styles of travel fans depending on the need you are trying to meet. Some want a fan that can fold up and fit in a purse, while others want one that can clip onto a bed or stand on a desk. Check out the different features to think about below.

Size: Hand Held, Mini, or Table Fan?

Deciding when you want to use it is the first step in figuring out the best fan for you. There are some that you hold in your hand to cool you off while waiting in that hot never, ending line to get into that popular museum. Others are better for those muggy nights clipped onto your hostel bunk to drown out the partiers and to blow a light breeze on your face. Do you want to carry it everywhere in your purse or have it in your  backpack ? These are some things to consider in your search.

Power Source

One of the tricky parts of traveling is navigating different outlet types.

  • USB is a pretty reliable source that you find in a lot of newer hotels, computers, and  travel adaptors , and many portable fans use USB  as a way to charge them.
  • Standard plug-in fans are always an option. Plug them into the wall, and they go forever or use your adaptor to plug it in and breeze away.
  • Chargeable! This is nice when you are on the go and are nowhere near a plug. Charge it and use it until you can get back to a power source. Best for handheld fans used when you are running around and trying not to melt.

Best Portable Fans for Travel

Now that you've decided if you need to add a travel fan to your list of  must-have travel gadgets , check out this guide on top reviewed portable and handheld fans that people are using this year.

Portable Rechargeable Neck Fan

Looking for something to keep you cool and keep your hands free? You might want to check out this rechargeable neck fan by Delmac.

This fan is unique in that you just place it around your neck and a quiet, cool breeze for your neck and face will keep you refreshed. It's bladeless, so your hair won't get caught in the fan, and the charge lasts at least 6 hours. With three cooling speeds and a flexible design, this portable fan is great for those who want to stay cool on the go but want to also stay hands-free.   Some people have commented that the circulation isn't strong at the back, and long hair and earrings can get in the way of the airflow. It's got a pretty specific use, but if long lines in the heat impact your comfort, this might be a fan to consider.

Our Rating: 3.5/5

  • Unique Design
  • Strong Speed, Quiet
  • Conversation Starter!
  • More Expensive at over $30 USD
  • May get in the way of Long Hair and Earrings
  • Doesn't circulate air all the way around
  • Not as many uses as some portable fans

GUSGU Flexible and Portable Fan

This interesting fan by GUSGU is really versatile to be used for many different things. The stand is bendable and can be used in a few different ways. You can prop it on a desk, hold it in your hand when on the go, or wrap the flexible arms around a surface like a metal bed frame, a stroller, or a lamp for really flexible use. Some users have found that the flexible arms don't stay tight and the fan will move out of place, and others would like the fan strength to be a bit stronger. But if you want an option for a fan that will work almost anywhere, this is a great fan to look into.

Our Rating: 4/5

  • Versatile to wrap around, handheld or stand on its own
  • USB with long charge
  • Many colors
  • Strong speed
  • Blades can pinch small fingers
  • Can move around after being attached
  • Not super strong

Mini Handheld USB Chargeable Fan by Aluan

This fan knows exactly who it is. If you want a small handheld fan smaller than your phone, with a powerful speed that you can tuck away in your pocket, this may be the fan for you. It comes in 5 fun colors and is rechargeable with a USB cord. Some users have found that the blades are a bit fragile if dropped, and a few had issues with the fan holding a charge after a while, so these are things to consider. However, for a small, inexpensive fan that you can take on the go when you have minimal space, this mini fan is a great choice.

Our Rating: 4.3/5

  • Inexpensive, under $15 USD
  • Battery Powered, rechargeable
  • Very small, fits in pocket
  • Can't stand on its own
  • Battery can die fairly quickly
  • Blades can be fragile and break easily

Clip on Portable Fan for Travel

If a portable fan for use in one location such as sleeping or at a desk, is what you are looking for, here is a great option to consider. This fan has a clip-on feature that does need to be plugged into a USB port, so it is not chargeable and is something to consider if you want to use it away from a power supply. At 6 inches, it's bigger than a handheld fan but still very packable for a carryon. People like the clip-on feature and the dual speeds, but some have indicated that it's a bit louder and that they wish the cord was a bit longer.

Our Rating: 3.2 /5

  • Many different colors
  • Clip on good for Hostels
  • Strong speed with swivel for more flexibility
  • Not as portable
  • Not as quiet as some portable fans
  • Cord is short

Should You Take a Portable Fan When You Travel?

Overall, it depends on where you are traveling and what your needs are. If you run hot and hate to be sticky or sweaty, then it might be a good idea to grab one of these handheld mini fans just in case. If you are a digital nomad or hostel sleeper and you want a fan to keep cool or dull noise, some of the options above are great to consider.

Last chance: 6 best portable fans on sale for Amazon Prime Day

Jordan Waller

This year witnessed record-high temperatures worldwide, with the mercury repeatedly hitting over 100 degrees Fahrenheit from Arizona to Nevada, Texas and across the ocean, stretching into Athens, Greece and beyond.

With the final day of Amazon's Fall Prime Day upon us, now is a great time to get a good deal on a hi-tech portable fan. Trust us, you'll be thankful by the time summer comes back around.

Here are some of the TPG team favorites and best-reviewed portable fans on Amazon that are currently on sale.

Best for extra features: Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan — $14.39 (normally $24.99)

best travel fan for europe

Coming in strong with an Amazon rating of 4.6, this portable fan from Jisulife is a small but mighty device that offers great value for the money.

Ergonomically designed, this device easily folds small to pack in a bag. It's also rechargeable, offering between 14 and 21 hours of use depending on which of its two settings you use. It comes with two great additional features: The fan houses a small flashlight and also functions as a power bank that can charge your devices on the go.

Still need convincing? TPG travel reporter Tarah Chieffi who makes frequent trips to the often-hot Orlando theme parks, never travels without it.

"It folds up small and holds a charge for longer than any other fan I've tried," she said. "I also love that I can use it to charge my phone when I am on the go."

Buy: Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan , $14.39 (normally $24.99)

Best for hotel rooms: coldSky Portable Handheld Fan — $12.74 (normally $14.99)

best travel fan for europe

This sturdy and powerful fan might be slightly larger than other portable fans (though certainly small enough to pack into a tote bag), but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, you want something with a little more oomph for when you accidentally book yourself into a hotel room that has subpar (or not) air conditioning .

The coldSky device is essentially a compact desk fan that packs a punch but is still small enough not to clutter up your hotel room's bedside table. It has five speeds and a seven-blade design that will make your room breezy in no time. It also has a handy digital display showing the remaining battery life so you know when to recharge the device.

Buy: coldSky Portable Handheld Fan , $12.74 (normally $14.99)

Best for serious wind power: Jisulife Handheld Fan — $12.99 (normally $22.99)

best travel fan for europe

This is a stylishly designed hand-held fan that can also easily stand up on a desk.

The Jisulife Handheld Fan offers up to 16 hours of battery power and is easily charged via USB. It has fewer speed settings than some other fans on this list, but its real selling point is its strength. At full speed, it can reach up to 4,400 revolutions per minute; this equates to the feel of a strong wind, making it great for cutting through the harshest of heat.

Buy: Jisulife Handheld Fan , $12.99 (normally $22.99)

Best hands-free fan: Penkou Portable Neck Fan — $25.99 (normally $39.99)

best travel fan for europe

Looking for something you don't have to carry around in your hands all day but are also worried that a wearable fan sounds like a quirky steampunk contraption? This neck fan by Penkou is a safe option.

When in use, the device looks similar to a pair of headphones dangling around your neck. Its bladeless fan design produces less than 20 decibels of sound (about the same level as leaves gently rustling), so it also comes free of noise distraction. And with a weight of just 8.8 ounces, you should be safe from neck strain.

In terms of battery power, you should get between three and 16 hours, depending on which setting you prefer. It's perfect for hikes, at the theme park or to wear during a long, sweaty train or bus journey.

Buy: Penkou Portable Neck Fan , $25.99 (normally $39.99)

TPG favorite: VersionTech Mini Handheld Fan — $12.99 (normally $27.99)

best travel fan for europe

Finally, if you're looking for something cheap but reliable enough to shower you with a pleasant breeze, we recommend VersionTech's mini-handled fan. It's a favorite of TPG director of travel content Summer Hull.

This device can function like both a hand-held fan and a small desk fan. It also easily clips to bags or other thin surfaces.

The fan has three adjustable speeds and will work for up to three hours on the highest setting or eight hours on the lowest. It's currently priced at $12.99, down from its usual price tag of $27.99 as of this publication date. Get it while you can.

Buy: VersionTech Mini Handheld Fan , $12.99 (normally $27.99)

5 Of The Best Travel Fans For White Noise + Buying Tips

Best travel fans for white noise featured

Below you’ll find 5 of the best travel fans for white noise on the market along with short reviews and pros & cons lists for each.

There are also some helpful things to know and consider before spending money or picking a fan. I’d love to help you get the best fan for your needs so read on to learn more.

best travel fan for europe

How does white noise from a fan help?

Fan options to shop for, important foreign travel fan tips, ★ 5 of the best travel fans for white noise ★, summary – the top recommended travel fan for white noise, what is white noise.

White noise is the term used to describe a sound production that’s made up of all frequencies in the audio band (the range you can hear) at equal levels.

“White” is used to describe this particular type while others such as brown and pink exist and describe similar noise but with different acoustical levels in certain frequency ranges.

How white noise helps

How how white noise blocks sounds box fan diagram

White noise helps by “masking” bothersome noise and creating a more relaxed and distraction-free environment for. Sounds you otherwise would hear are “covered” (masked) by the sound your fan generates, resulting in it effectively eliminating it. As long as the outside sound is of an equal or lesser volume than the white noise it can be blocked.

Fans can improve your quality of life using the principle of sound masking.   This means that the noise it generates simple “covers”, or masks, the sounds that cause you problems and make sleeping or concentrating more difficult.

In reality, the fan isn’t actually removing outside sounds – but for all practical purposes, our brains think it’s gone.

This is because when many sounds are combined together well (especially with noise!) our brains can’t “hear” the distractions anymore.

The result is that as long as the bothersome outside sounds aren’t able to exceed the white noise level we no longer hear them.

Sleep like a baby!

Image of a woman sleeping comfortably

It’s a well-known fact that infants and children are able to sleep more readily with gentle sounds. For example, dishwashers, washing machines, and other sources have a pretty steady and rhythmic “pattern” that affects our brains in a pleasant way.

The psycho-acoustical effect of a soothing noise causes a pleasing and focused state in both many people’s minds and bodies. The result is better sleep as well as better concentration.

It’s especially helpful to have a fan when you travel for many adults or children sleeping in a new environment can be tough. You’re not accustomed to your surroundings and haven’t had time to adapt.

New environments mean new nuances and small sounds you’re not used to which can hurt your quality of sleep. I speak from personal experience!

How fans make white noise

How box fans produce white noise diagram

“White noise”, the soothing sound produced by many fans, is produced by a number of things that happen when a fan is running. It’s generally caused by the air turbulence created by the blades but often contains the sound of the fan motor, too. When a fan run runs, the air is drawn from the rear and forced out the front which causes noise.

Fans (especially traditional ones like box fans) are an easy-to-use and economical source of noise to cover sounds, reduce stress after a hard day, and promote better sleep.

The funny thing is that fans  aren’t intentionally designed to make noise!  It’s a wonderful side effect of how they work.

There are several factors involved that result in that soothing noise we love:

  • Air passing by the surfaces of the fan’s body
  • The rush of air on the input (suction) and output (forward) sides
  • Fan blades spinning through and disturbing the air
  • Turbulence caused by the nearby air being disturbed due to blowing
  • The gentle humming and operation of the motor itself

These factors combine to produce the cumulative effect as a “white noise” our ears and then brain receive. The result is rhythmic, calming, and most of all helpful sound.

As I described, this white noise is used to “mask, or cover, and effectively eliminate bothersome sounds as far as our brains are concerned.

Because of how fan work, they often have a tendency to vibrate on a very small scale which also contributes to a gentle undertone you’ll enjoy. Both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC, like from USB power or batteries) have sound characteristics you’ll hear without realizing it.

For example:

  • Power sources: Will an electrical outlet or USB power be available? Do you need cordless (battery) power?
  • Fan speeds: Will a simple single-speed fan be ok or are more important to you?
  • Folding/compact size: Is a slightly large fan ok or is space really tight?
  • Warranty length
  • Positioning or swivel features

Be sure to give these a thought when shopping. However, you can’t go wrong with the products I’ve researched, tested, and that I recommend below.

Pac2Go Universal travel adapter product image

When traveling abroad it’s critical to be prepared for other power voltages and non-USA electrical outlets. A universal travel adapter set is something I’ve relied on many times. No products found. is a great example of one I recommend. Using a fan without an adapter could destroy it or even cause a fire! This particular model in an amazing 192 countries!

I’ve traveled overseas quite a few times. Without a doubt, one of the best investments I’ve ever made was a universal travel adapter set with outlet adapters and a voltage converter.

Many countries have electrical outlets with different connector jacks that won’t work with American power plugs. Additionally, some countries I’ve been to have 220V (not 120V) power which can destroy your fan, a phone charger, or any electrical devices.

They could potentially even cause a fire!

Be ready to power a fan or other small electrical devices. Do a little research before you go to be sure you can power your small electronics to avoid a tremendous amount of inconvenience.

I’ve learned the hard way that in many areas of the world it’s very difficult to find special power adapters for some of the devices you bring from back home.

Our top picks at a glance

Vornado Fit personal fan editor's choice image

The wonderful Vornado Fit Personal Air Circulator is nice take on the traditional small fan. If you’re unfamiliar with the company, Vornado manufactures some of the best air comfort products on the market.

It’s a well-made fan that takes up very little desk or table space as well. Two color options are available: Aqua or pink.

2 speeds are available for your comfort and white noise needs: low and fast. While it’s a quiet fan, it still provides a pleasing white noise sound you can use next to when you’re traveling.

It’s just a matter of selecting low, off, or high from the sturdy rocker switch on the side.

Vornado Fit personal fan side rear views

The Vornado Fit is a great little fan that’s well-made and perfect for putting in luggage. The base folds underneath when not in use for compact storage.

And speaking of travel, what would a small be without portability? The Fit folds up easily and is great in luggage. The design makes it easier to pack it in luggage when you’re ready to go.

It’s powered by standard 110 AC power so unfortunately there’s no battery option. However, one reason for this is that it’s more powerful than lesser fans and provides much greater airflow.

Measuring a small 8.3 x 7.5 x 5.2 inches in size, it’s definitely a travel fan that’s great for hotel rooms, resorts, and just about anywhere you need nice white sound and an outlet is available.

Vornado also offers a 3 year warranty which most others don’t.

  • 2-speed fan control
  • Compact but good airflow for cooling

Opolar portable fan image 1

Ready for one of the best travel fan values you can find? Then the No products found. may be  exactly what you’re looking for.

Be ready for anything!

Opolar portable fan battery

Depending upon use, you’ll get several hours of comfortable cooling and soft white noise to get you through your rest. Expect about 3-11 hours of use depending on which of the fan speeds you choose (low, medium, or high).

Opolar portable fan light features image

Even more, you also get an optional internal accent light/night light as well as a side light that works like a small flashlight. They’re cool features that are unexpected in this price range.

2 built-in lights are provided and I really like them. LED lights are provided for optional use as an accent light/night light as well as a mini flashlight on the side of the base.

Electronic controls round out a  great little fan.

And most importantly, it produces a steady and soothing ambient white noise you’ll enjoy. It’s also one of the best rated in its price range!

  • 3-11 hour battery power time
  • Rechargeable battery included
  • USB power option (cable included)
  • Built-in flashlight
  • Electronic controls
  • 3 fan speeds
  • Internal accent/night light
  • AC adapter not included
  • No swivel positioning for fan top
  • No carrying case

I recommend it because it’s a great combination of cooling, features, and especially value.

4. SkyGenius rechargeable clip-on – It goes and provides white noise where others can’t

SkyGenius clip-on fan front

  • Battery and USB powered (no outlet needed!)
  • Rechargeable, and includes the battery
  • Can be used on a table or clip on to  nearly anything

Sound impossible? It’s not. The SkyGenius battery powered clip-on mini fan is all of these things. It’s a fantastic choice for where other fans can’t go!

SkyGenius clip-on fan features image

The SkyGenius fan includes a rechargeable battery and USB cable for powering the fan or charging the battery. What’s especially great about this model is how you can adjust it for airflow  perfectly where you need it. The swivel head is easy to use and works great.

One of my biggest reasons for recommending this little winner is how great the design is. The fan cage can be rotated to  any position you need for cooling or white noise use.

There’s also an adjustable fan speed control on the rear . That’s a very unique – and rare – feature for a fan that’s priced so low.

SkyGenius clip-on fan desk use examples

The SkyGenius works great both with its clip feature or standing on its base. Don’t forget you can power it directly from any USB port!

But you’re not limited to using it only with the clip – the base is designed to work on any tabletop or desk just like any other small fan. It measures a mere 7.5 x 6 x 4 inches in size, so it’s an excellent choice for travel.

For having white noise you can literally take anywhere, it’s a slam dunk.

  • Battery or USB power
  • Rechargeable battery and USB cables included
  • Adjustable fan speed
  • Clip-on feature works almost anywhere
  • Desk stand base
  • Swivel head w/ 360 degree rotation
  • Simple controls
  • Great price
  • Good buyer reviews
  • Some buyers prefer fixed speed controls
  • No AC adapter included
  • Black only (no white available)
  • Can’t fold for storage

All-in-all, it’s one of the values in a travel fan for white noise anywhere. If you need the greatest in ease of use and portability, be sure to check it out.

5.  Honeywell HTF090B Turbo – Compact and convenient with 3 power options

Honeywell HTF090B Turbo folding fan

I’m already a big Honeywell fan as I’ve tested many of their air quality products. They’re some of the best I’ve owned and tested. This cool little Turbo model is no different.

It’s a single-speed fan with simple operation that folds  very neatly out of the way. At 4.7 x 2.28 x 6.4 inches, it’s really small but can cool efficiently and create great white noise you’ll like.

Honeywell HTF090B Turbo On the Go portable fan side and rear views

Two great power options are available: USB power (using the included cable) or 4 AA batteries if you need cable-free power.

Thanks to the DC motor design it helps reduce energy waste and can be powered by the batteries more efficiently for extended battery length.

Not only that, but the base it folds into can also double as a carrying handle for your convenience.

  • Battery powered (4 x AA)
  • Super compact
  • Smart folding design
  • Simple on-off control
  • Clear, helpful instructions
  • High airflow despite small size
  • Nice white noise production for its class
  • Great price and build quality
  • Excellent buyer reviews
  • Single speed only
  • No AC-USB power adapter included
  • Cannot swivel fan horizontally

Undoubtedly, the Turbo on the Go fan is one of the most compact and easy-to-use travel fans you’ll find.

If you’re on a budget but want a well-made mini fan for traveling and still enjoying white noise, it’s an excellent choice.

Vornado Fit personal fan editor's choice image

I awarded the Vornado Fit my Editor’s Choice distinction. For those who need a solid performer for white noise you can take with you, it’s a great choice.

It was a tough call, but I’m happy to recommend the Vornado Fit folding portable fan to anyone with access to a standard outlet. You’ll get lovely white noise to help you relax or sleep with the added benefit of great build quality and ease of use.

Your comments are welcome!

Which one was the loudest? Thank you!

Hi, the Vornado is one of the louder ones. Most were pretty similar, more or less, depending on their speed setting, etc.

However, another option, if you’ve got room in your luggage or bag, is a slightly larger one like an 8-inch portable fan like this one. They’re louder and still pretty affordable. Hope that helps!

Hi there, I was so happy to find this page. We are traveling to Europe this June from America and my hubby and kids are addicted to the sound of loud box fans, as well as the breeze they offer. I’m trying to figure out what on earth I can do that is small enough to travel with but that also makes as loud of a noise as possible. I do have some white noise machine makers, but they will still want a fan, so having a fan that is loud is the best solution. So funny companies pride themselves on making quiet fans when so many of us want LOUD fans for sleeping LOL! I found a video of the Vornado one and it makes an ok sound when on high, but I was hoping for louder. Grant, I love the 8″ portable Comfort Zone fan you linked to in the comments section. This is exactly what I’m looking for I believe. Only issue is that it is definitely a 120V and I need one that is 220V for Europe (specifically Amsterdam, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France and UK). I have heard it’s possible to buy a voltage converter but so many people say they cannot be counted upon to work, and often blow a circuit and that would be horrible cuz then we’re stuck with no fan at all. Don’t suppose anyone out there has any advice? Thanks in advance! -Katie

Hi Katie. I understand what you mean about fan noise & quiet fan noise. The good news is I can tell you from personal experience that a 220V to 110V travel converter with a real transformer will work fine, as I’ve used them myself.

It’s the other type (the ones that don’t produce a real sine wave like you find in your home’s electrical supply) that can cause issues. Here’s an example of the type I’m talking about that work well: ELC step down voltage converter.

Note that you may be be able to use a smaller version based on the wattage of whatever you’re planning to plug in requires. Here’s an example of a lower wattage model adapter.

Best regards!

  • It is really powerful for its size

The Best Travel Fan

If you suffer from travel sickness as I do then you know that overheating is one of the easiest ways to start feeling sick.

It can be difficult to get the temperature right, especially if you are travelling in vehicles where air conditioning isn’t standard or effective.

Even airplanes can get ludicrously hot sometimes and before you know it you can be feeling sick and groggy.

This travel fan is so small that is easy to keep with you wherever you are travelling.

I spent a great deal of time on coaches and I simply don’t travel without this. Sitting at the front of a coach with the sun coming through the glass can often be like being in a greenhouse. This fan stops me from feeling sick, which isn’t great when you are being a tour guide!

This fan can sit on a surface by folding the case back or you can tuck into somewhere. I have tucked it into the curtain strap-on coaches to help me deal with the sun coming through the window. I have also tucked it into the back of seat pockets on planes where it has been too warm.

Despite its tiny size, this fan is surprisingly powerful which is why I love it so much.

There are two speeds depending on the airflow you prefer.

When not in use this travel fan folds up together protecting the blades.

A mini USB charger means you can charge this easily when travelling too.

This fan is also super quiet meaning you can use it anywhere without disturbing other people. It also means you can use it when you are sleeping if it is too hot where you are.

No matter whether you are travelling by plane, coach, car or anything else you can think of this travel fan is a great piece of travel gear to have with you.

It’s ideal if you are staying in hotels where the temperature can be difficult to get right, or even travelling in a car.

Buyer's Guide: Travel Fan

Key considerations for a travel fan.

  • Look for a travel fan that is compact and lightweight, allowing easy portability in your luggage or carry-on bag. It should not take up too much space, ensuring you can bring other essential items with you during your travels.
  • Power Source :
  • Determine the power source options available for the travel fan. Consider whether you prefer a fan that can be charged via USB or batteries. USB-charged fans are convenient if you have access to a power outlet or a power bank, while battery-operated fans are useful in situations where charging is not possible.
  • Battery Life :
  • Check the battery life of the travel fan if you opt for a battery-operated model. A longer battery life ensures the fan can last throughout your journey without needing frequent battery replacements or recharging.
  • Adjustable Speed and Direction :
  • Find a travel fan with adjustable speed settings to customize the airflow according to your preferences. Additionally, if the fan allows you to adjust the direction of the airflow, it provides greater flexibility and comfort.
  • Noise Level :
  • Consider the noise level produced by the travel fan, especially if you are sensitive to loud sounds or if you plan to use it during the night. Look for a fan with a quiet operation that won't disturb your sleep or conversations.
  • Durability :
  • Ensure that the travel fan is sturdy and built to withstand the rigors of travel. It should be made with durable materials that can handle the occasional bumps and knocks.
  • Additional Features :
  • Explore any additional features offered by the travel fan, such as built-in LED lights, aroma diffusers, or a timer function. These extra features can enhance your travel experience and make the fan more versatile.
  • Consider your budget while selecting a travel fan. Determine the features you prioritize and find a fan that strikes the right balance between affordability and functionality.

25 Best Travel Accessories for Europe

We have been travelling around Europe for years and know exactly what the best travel accessories for Europe are and what items you should leave behind!

Regardless of whether you are about to embark on your own trip to Europe or are looking for a gift for a friend or family member, this list of must-have items will help narrow exactly what accessories you should be packing for Europe!

Table of Contents

Arguably one of the most important travel accessories is going to be a camera. While mobile phone cameras are getting better and better these days, if you want to come home with some truly spectacular photos from your Europe trip, then you’re going to want to invest in a good camera.

If you’re interested in learning photography and want a top-notch camera without the weight and hassle of a DSLR, then we recommend the Sony A6400 .

It is the camera that we personally use for all of our photos and its lightweight, mirrorless quality makes it the ideal camera for travel as it won’t add a lot of weight to your luggage.

Sony Alpha a6400 Mirrorless Camera: Compact APS-C Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera with Real-Time Eye Auto Focus, 4K Video, Flip Screen & 16-50mm Lens - E Mount Compatible - ILCE-6400L/B, Black

Lightweight Tripod

Another Europe travel necessity if you’re interested in upping your photography game is a lightweight tripod.

While it might seem like a tripod is a heavy, awkward, and clunky thing to pack with you on your trip to Europe, there are numerous tripods on the market these days that are incredibly lightweight and small, making them ideal for travel.

Our pick for the best lightweight tripod to bring with you is the Joby Gorillapod (also available from REI here ), however, there are numerous other options available.

With a solid tripod combined with a great camera and you are sure to have some enviable photos of your Europe trip to post on your Instagram.

Kindle E-Reader

If you love to read while on holiday or if you just don’t want to bother carrying around a heavy guidebook wherever you go, then an Amazon Kindle e-reader is an essential item.

I was late to the Kindle game and thought I would only ever want to read paper books, however, I did end up purchasing a Kindle for my travels and my life has been forever changed.

Not only do you have an entire world worth of books available to you at just a click of a few buttons, but Kindles are also incredibly lightweight and take up minimal space in your bag.

The Kindle Paperwhite has a backlight so you can read into the night without disturbing your partner and the matte screen mimics paper so you can easily read outside in the sunshine.

International SIM Card

In this day and age, staying connected is more of a necessity rather than a luxury. And though it might even seem tempting to plan to go to Europe and be able to turn off your phone and get away from it all, the fact of the matter is that having a data plan makes travelling throughout Europe so much easier.

And this is why having a good international SIM card with data is an absolute must-have.

We recommend buying an Orange SIM with 30GB data or Three SIM with 12GB data before heading to Europe because they have affordable data plans and work throughout the European Union, meaning that you will not have to get a new SIM every time you cross the border to a different country.

It is also a great idea to pre-order a SIM to your home before you leave, so that way you can be connected as soon as you land and not waste any of your valuable holiday time trying to get an affordable data plan.

Another of the electronic travel necessities, a power bank can be absolutely essential while on the road, especially if you want to make sure that your many devices are properly charged.

There is nothing worse than being lost and not being able to use Google Maps because your phone is going to die, or wanting to read a book on you long bus ride only to find that your Kindle is at 5%.

A power bank is one of those items that you don’t think you will need until you absolutely need it, however, it will become an invaluable asset to any of your holidays — and your everyday life!

Anker Portable Charger, Power Bank, 10,000 mAh Battery Pack with PowerIQ Charging Technology and USB-C (Input Only) for iPhone 15/15 Plus/15 Pro/15 Pro Max, iPhone 14/13 Series, Samsung Galaxy

Travel Adapter

A travel adapter is another must-have Europe accessory that is so easy to forget that you need.

However, if you’re visiting the European continent from pretty much everywhere outside of the European continent, you will find that the plugs are different from the ones you use at home. And, because of this, you will need an adaptor for any of your electronics to get power.

While you can get a plug adaptor that is only for the European-style plug outlet, we recommend getting a universal adapter that can accept and adapt to any plug type, so you can use it wherever you go.

This is especially helpful if you plan to visit places like the UK , Malta or Cyprus along with other European countries, as they use different plug types to the rest of Europe. We also recommend finding one that has USB slots so you can easily charge your devices.

Portable WiFi Hotspot

If you work online or need to be more connected than the average person while travelling through Europe, then you might find that a portable WiFi hotspot is an incredibly helpful accessory to bring with you.

With a mobile hotspot, you never need to be at the mercy of a shoddy hotel connection or worry about the safety of an open wireless network. There are numerous mobile WiFi hotspots for travel available out there, but we recommend the GlocalMe G4 Mobile Hotspot for the best all-around features.

If you choose to rely on public WiFi instead, make sure to invest in a quality VPN such as ExpressVPN so you can browse the internet securely!

Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Whether you want to block out noise on your long-haul flight, want to listen to music while on a train, or want to block out the snoring of a hostel bunkmate, a pair of noise-cancelling can be an invaluable addition to your Europe luggage .

Personally, I like in-ear headphones as they are small, lightweight, and take up virtually no space in my bag. However, it can also be worth it to bring a pair of over-the-ear headphones if you want to completely block out noise and get some better sound quality.

Sony WF-1000XM3 Truly Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones with Mic, up to 32 Hours Battery Life, Stable Bluetooth Connection, Wearing Detection with Alexa Built-in - Black

Packing Cubes

If you want to keep everything (not only your electronic cords!) organised and compressed in your luggage, then you cannot go wrong with packing cubes.

These have revolutionised our packing completely and allow us to keep everything clean, dry and organised while also maximising valuable suitcase space.

There are so many different packing cubes available , however, we recommend and personally use the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter cubes .

Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Compression Packing Cubes S/M - Durable, Ultra-Lightweight and Water-Resistant Ripstop Fabric Suitcase Organizer Bags for Clothing and Gear, Brilliant Blue

Anti-Theft Handbag

If you’re travelling to Europe, you’re likely going to need to be vigilant in the more popular tourist areas as pickpocketing can happen.

While we don’t necessarily think this is something you be actively worried about (if you are smart and don’t flash your valuables, you are unlikely to be pickpocketed), having an anti-theft handbag or day pack can take a lot of stress away from having to watch over your belongings.

I personally use the PacSafe Citysafe Convertible Backpack (also available direct from Pacsafe here ) and absolutely love it — I’ve also never been pickpocketed (knock on wood)!

Pacsafe Women's Citysafe Cx Anti Theft Convertible Backpack-Fits 10' Tablet, Black

Lightweight Shopping Bag

For the environmentally-conscious (and we all should be), you will find that bringing a packable lightweight shopping bag to be the perfect European travel accessory for you.

Most European countries have bans on single-use plastic and will make you pay for bags at the supermarket, so having your own shopping bag will not only cut down on excessive plastic usage, but it will also save you money.

Having your own shopping bag is also useful if you want to shop at local markets where you’re unlikely to get a plastic bag at all.

ChicoBag Original Compact Reusable Grocery Bag w/Attached Pouch and Carabiner Clip | Perfect for Shopping, Travel, Organization | Eco-Conscious Packable Tote | Boysenberry (Pack of 1)

Reusable Water Bottle

Along the same lines as the shopping bag, the tap water in Europe is safe to drink across the board and because of this, it is completely unnecessary to buy plastic water bottles. Not only is buying water incredibly wasteful, but it also can add a lot to your overall daily expenses.

So please bring a reusable water bottle — you won’t be sorry.

And if you’re someone who doesn’t like the taste of tap water or if you’re nervous about the water safety (in the EU and pretty much everywhere else in Europe, the tap water is completely safe anyway) you can get a water bottle with a filter !

Brita Hard-Sided Plastic Premium Filtering Water Bottle, BPA-Free, Replaces 300 Plastic Water Bottles, Filter Lasts 2 Months or 40 Gallons, Includes 1 Filter, Kitchen Accessories, Sea Glass - 26 oz.

Travel French Press

If you’re a coffee fan like me, then you might get a little tired of the instant coffee that is normally on offer at hotels and other accommodations in Europe. If you want to brew a good cup of coffee in your hotel room or Airbnb, I recommend bringing a travel French press!

I personally use and love the Espro Travel Coffee Press and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

ESPRO P1 French Press Coffee Maker for Travel - Double Walled Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Coffee Maker and Tea Maker, Portable and Durable Coffee Press for Travel, 12 Ounce, Matte Meteorite Black

Reusable Toiletry Bottles

If you’re only going to Europe for a short time or are flying carry-on only, then investing in a set of reusable toiletry bottles is an affordable and convenient way to avoid plastic waste and take your favourite shampoo with you.

I personally recommend GoToobs as they are leak-proof and under 100ml, meaning that you can put them in your carry-on luggage on aeroplanes.

humangear GoToob+ 3-Pack (Medium) | Refillable Silicone Travel Bottle | Locking Lid | Food-Safe Material, Clear/Red/Orange, Medium (2.5 fl.oz.; 74ml)

Headphone Splitter

If you’re travelling as a couple and you both want to watch the same show or movie (or listen to the same music!) while on a plane, bus, or train, then a headphone splitter is one of the best travel items for Europe for you.

Instead of sharing a pair of in-ear headphones to be able to watch the same movie, a headphone splitter allows both parties to watch and enjoy the same thing with good sound quality, as well! This is obviously only necessary though if you don’t have wireless headphones!

Syncwire Headphone Splitter, Nylon-Braided Extension Cable Audio Stereo Y Splitter (Hi-Fi Sound), 3.5mm Male To 2 Ports 3.5mm Female Headset Splitter for Phone, PS4, Switch, Tablets & More

One of our most valued items we take to Europe is an HDMI cable , which allows us to connect our laptops to a TV so we can stream things like Netflix or YouTube on a big screen.

While a lot of Airbnbs or hotels will have smart TVs with streaming subscriptions, most do not and it can be really nice to be able to watch a movie or TV show once every so often while you are on the road.

PowerBear 4K HDMI Cable 10 ft | High Speed Hdmi Cables, Braided Nylon & Gold Connectors, 4K @ 60Hz, Ultra HD, 2K, 1080P, ARC & CL3 Rated | for Laptop, Monitor, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Fire TV, & More

Cord Organiser

Because the average person travels with so many electronic devices these days, it can be very difficult to keep all of the cords and chargers organised.

Rather than shoving everything into a zip-top bag and risking a tangled mess, we recommend investing in a cord organiser to keep your things together. It is also a lot more environmentally friendly than a plastic bag!

BUBM Double Layer Electronic Accessories Organizer, Travel Gadget Bag for Cables, USB Flash Drive, Plug and More, Perfect Size Fits for iPad Mini (Medium, Grey)

Scarves have always been a pinnacle of European fashion for both men and women and they are also the perfect European travel accessory.

Scarves can be used for lots of things — they’re great at adding a chic pop to your outfit, you can use them to cover your head or shoulders if you’re touring churches or religious sites, and they can be used as a light blanket or even a pillow.

YOBOKO Womens Fashion Long Scarf Linen-Cotton Beautiful Pure Color Soft Scarves,Breathable & Comfortable Super Large Size Shawl Wrap for Outside/Beach, 200 X130 CM (Black)

While a padlock has always been a Europe travel essential for backpackers wanting to secure their belongings, a TSA-approved luggage lock is a great thing for all kinds of travellers. I personally like to lock my luggage while on trains or walking to my accommodation.

If there isn’t a safe in my room, I will also lock my valuables in my luggage if while I am out for the day. Having a padlock can give you the extra layer of security that you might need.

TSA Luggage Locks (2 Pack) - 4 Digit Combination Steel Padlocks - Approved Travel Lock for Suitcases & Baggage - TSA Lock - Black

International Driver’s Permit

A European travel essential if you’re planning on renting a car on your holiday is an International Driver’s Permit, or IDP.

While not a substitute for your actual driver’s license, an IDP translates your license into a number of different languages and is a requirement in some European countries. While you may never be asked for one, it is always better to have — just like a good travel insurance policy!

Travel Umbrella

Even if you’re travelling in the height of summertime, Europe (like everywhere else in the world) is still susceptible to the occasional rainstorm.

And while we always recommend packing a good waterproof travel jacket in Europe , it can also be a very good idea to stick a solid travel umbrella into your luggage.

You don’t want your trip to Europe to be ruined by the rain, so an umbrella is really an essential item for Europe or any international travel!

Repel Umbrella The Original Portable Travel Umbrella - Umbrellas for Rain Windproof, Strong Compact Umbrella for Wind and Rain, Perfect Car Umbrella, Golf Umbrella, Backpack, and On-the-Go

Travel Pillow

If you plan to take any long bus or train journeys or have a long-haul flight to kick off your European adventure, then a good travel pillow is going to be a Europe travel necessity for you.

Nothing is worse than getting a sore neck after being crammed into a seat on an uncomfortable flight or bus trip, and a good and supportive neck pillow is a great way to add some comfort to your journey.

MLVOC Travel Pillow 100% Pure Memory Foam Neck Pillow, Comfortable & Breathable Cover - Machine Washable, Airplane Travel Kit with 3D Sleep Mask, Earplugs, and Luxury Bag, Grey

If you want to have a good night’s sleep, then finding a good eye mask can be one of the things you’ll miss most if you don’t have!

Eye masks are helpful to block out the light and to get some sleep on a plane, they are also helpful if your accommodation doesn’t have good curtains or there is one blinking light that drives you crazy during the night.

Having a good eye mask can make or break the sleep you get on your trip, and having a good night’s sleep means that you will have all the more energy to go out and explore Europe!

Alaska Bear Sleep Mask Silk Eye Cover with Contoured Padding for Pressure-Free Comfort - Upgrade Over Thin Flat Shades (Black)

Much like an eye mask, earplugs are really helpful to ensure a good night’s sleep on your Europe trip.

Not only are earplugs incredibly useful when it comes to getting some shut-eye on a long-haul flight or drowning out noisy bunkmates in your hostel dorm, but they can also be just as helpful if you’re staying in a hotel with a lot of street noise.

Like I said earlier, nothing is worse than exploring a European city when you’re tired and cranky and making sure you have earplugs to drown out the noise can prevent this.

3M Ear Plugs, 30 Pairs/Box, E-A-R Classic 310-1060, Uncorded, Disposable, Foam, NRR 29, For Drilling, Grinding, Machining, Sawing, Sanding, Welding, 1 Pair/Pillow Pack

Hand Sanitiser

One thing that I bring with me everywhere I go, making it an essential Europe travel accessory, is hand sanitiser , particularly given recent events!

You’re going to be seeing and touching a lot of things while on your Europe trip and you’re not always going to have direct access to a sink to wash your hands. So if you want to have a picnic and you’re hands are feeling a bit grimy, your trusty hand sanitiser will come to the rescue.

PURELL Advanced Hand Sanitizer Soothing Gel, Fresh Scent, 8 fl oz Pump Bottle (Pack of 4), 9674-06-ECDECO

These are just some of the items to add to your packing list that can make your trip to the continent a lot easier and more convenient !

Are you looking for items to take to Europe? Is there anything you never travel without? Let us know in the comments!

What Is A Travel Fan And Why You Need One

Travel fans are fans that are typically small and lightweight. You can get a handheld fan to bring with you during the day or just a small fan that you set up in your hotel room.

They’re great if you are traveling somewhere that doesn’t have air conditioning, or if you know you’ll be outside in the hot sun for most of the day. Either to hike, at an amusement park, at the beach, etc.

They’re handy travel accessories that you should always be sure to pack if you’re going somewhere hot or traveling during the summer! You’ll be happy you brought one with you.

The Different Types of Fans

The handheld travel fans are pretty self-explanatory. They often feature some sort of handle or a way that you’re able to hold the fan while you point it directly at your face. They often come with a spot to attach a lanyard to so you can also wear it around your neck.

Handheld travel fans are the best type of travel fan to get if you want to bring it with you while you’re doing activities during the day. Handheld fans also are typically rechargeable with a USB and can work most of the day without having to recharge it.

Personal Fan

Personal travel fans tend to be small and compact and are best to leave in one spot. They’re a great option if you need a fan for your hotel room or somewhere to just set it up and leave it.

Obviously, they’re easy to travel with since they have a compact size and are lightweight but they are also usually designed to sit on one flat surface. Additionally, they can come with a USB to charge it or with a wire that plugs into the wall.

4 Things To Look For In A Good travel fan

Speed settings .

Depending on what you want to use the fan for, you should check to see if it has multiple speed settings. It’s nice to have the option of the fan blowing fast to quickly cool you down or if you only need one setting that will steadily cool down your room.

Design

Another factor to look at when deciding on a fan is the design. Do you want one you can hold during the day, one you can fit into your pocket, or maybe you want one you can stand on a flat surface. Perhaps one that does both? These are all important factors to consider when picking out a fan that works for you.

Another thing to consider is the size. Do you want one you can throw in your purse or your pocket? Or does it just need to fit in a suitcase? Also, keep in mind the weight. If you are planning to wear it on a lanyard all day, make sure it’s super lightweight and won’t pull on your neck all day.

How It’s Powered

Lastly, make sure you note how the fan is powered. If you want one you can bring with you to the beach, camping, or somewhere without electricity, make sure that it has a rechargeable battery that you can charge before you go. Now, if you just need one to put in a hotel room, you’ll be just fine with one that plugs into an outlet. These are just important to keep in mind when you’re picking one out.

Wrapping Up

Adding a small travel fan to your packing list is an excellent idea, especially if you are traveling somewhere hot or are spending a lot of time outdoors where the sun is shining and the temperature is high.

Bringing a travel fan is a wonderful way to cool off whether you’re spending the day at an amusement park, the beach, exploring a new city, hiking, staying somewhere without air conditioning, etc. It may not be the first thing you think of when you pack, but it definitely is an important item to consider bringing with you.

We hope you enjoyed our list and were able to find the best travel fan that is perfect for you and your travel plans! Happy traveling!

Best Travel Accessories for Europe: The List of Essentials

Europe Travel Necessities

Some people collect Burano glass to display in their homes. Others pick up a refrigerator magnet to remind them of their travels. While I don’t collect any particular product, I do have a display of travel accessories that I have accumulated over the years sitting on a table in my bedroom. These products are certainly not displayed in beautiful glass cases, but I do look at this collection of travel accessories fondly as they have made such a positive impact on my travel experiences. Extensive long-term travel through Europe combined with ailments like a herniated disc in my back, allergic reactions to mosquito bites ,and severe motion sickness has caused me to really curate the perfect list of “what to bring when traveling to Europe.” Also, my readers have shown me tons of additional products that they have purchase for their trips to Europe. All of this information has afforded me the opportunity to create this list of the best travel accessories for Europe.

This post contains affiliate links. That means I receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking the link at no extra cost to you.

Packing Travel Accessories for Europe

Packing cubes.

To roll or not to roll, there is no question. Rolling your clothes into a packing cube is a life-changing method for those who typically take longer trips or are serial over-packers. It is truly astounding how much more you can fit into your suitcase. Everyone has their own packing cube method, but I would recommend either using each packing cube for a specific type of clothing or if you are traveling through multiple seasons, using the largest cube for winter clothes and the medium-sized cubes for summer attire. I bought these Shacke Pack cubes from Amazon and they have served me well. I washed them a couple times due to a bed bug scare and they did not fall apart. Travelers also seem to love the Bagail packing cubes so I included both options.

Travel Shoe Bags

I cannot believe it took me so long in life to buy travel shoe bags. Not only do these bags keep the bottom of your shoe from dirtying up your clothes, but they also serve as a dual-purpose laundry bag for wet or worn clothes. I prefer bags that have a transparent window, so you can see what pair of shoes are inside without undoing the drawstring (maximizes space) or zipper (secure).

Leakproof Travel Size Bottles for Toiletries

I never wanted to go through the extra effort of pouring my face wash into a l eakproof travel bottle ; however, after my precious Philosophy Purity facial cleanser leaked on multiple trips, I have now learned that this extra step is key. I recommend choosing bottles that are all different colors, so you can identify which liquid is in each bottle. ex. blue = face wash, pink =hand cream, yellow = body lotion, etc. This may be instinctive to most, but if you don’t use up the liquids during your trip, make sure you continue to use when you get home. I accidentally left my body wash in one of the bottles for quite a while and it dried up making it difficult to clean.

best travel fan for europe

Anti-theft Backpack or Crossbody

While you should always remain vigilant while traveling, it is nice to have a bag that has anti-theft protections. I bought the Travelon Anti-theft Signature Slim Backpack because I wanted a way to disperse the weight of my belongings evenly across my back, but not have to worry about pickpockets sticking their hand into my purse. Not only did I use this backpack every day for three months in Europe, but it has also become my day-to-day bag in LA. I am including this other travel backpack from Pincnel because it has been a favorite of my readers for its fashionable look. Popular anti-theft bags from brands like Pacsafe and Baggallini are also sold on Zappos .

best travel fan for europe

I use a money belt when I am carrying a large amount of cash from the airport to my accommodation, but not during my day-to-day.  This is why. 1) I don’t want to lift my shirt up in public 2) I don’t want to sweat more by wearing something around my stomach in the heat of the summer 3) You should only be bringing enough cash to get you through the day. Everything else should be dispersed in various places back at your accommodation to avoid theft.

best travel fan for europe

Dry Bag, Portable Safe, Luggage Scale

These miscellaneous items are not a travel necessity for every trip, but I wanted to include them on this list of things to take to Europe as they may be useful to you on your upcoming visit.

1) Dry Bag 2) Portable Safe 3) Luggage Scale

Best Air Travel Accessories for Europe

Mackenzie lumbar pillow.

My physical therapist recommended this product for long-haul flights and it has made a tremendous difference. On prior trips, I would land in a new country with a sore back that would progressively get worse, but this lumbar roll mitigates lower back pain for the flight so I start off the trip at 100%.

best travel fan for europe

Portable Travel Fan

I have always been nauseous on planes, but that changed when I realized that using a portable fan gave me the proper air flow I needed. I would get off a plane and be so light-headed when I needed to be on my A-game so I could navigate my way from the airport to my accommodation. Of course, everyone doesn’t have this problem, but if you do get motion sick on public transport, then I recommend giving this a try. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to throw this in your bag to cool off after walking 25,000 steps during the hot European summer.

best travel fan for europe

Headphone Splitter

If you have one iPad, one movie, and two people or if you want to listen to a podcast together whether that be on the plane or on another form of public transport in Europe, then a headphone splitter is a great solution for sharing a device.

best travel fan for europe

Travel Pillow

I generally just bring my lumbar pillow for my back since two pillows would probably be a bit extra…but I do miss that solid neck support when I start nodding off on the airplane. The Trtl pillow is so compact it barely takes up any additional room which is a fabulous design feature!

best travel fan for europe

Compression Socks

Increase circulation, decrease swelling, and prevent blood clots by wearing compression socks on long-haul flights to Europe. Essentially, spend a little and prioritize your health.

best travel fan for europe

Wet Wipes, Hand Sanitizer

Be that person who wipes down your airplane seat. I am, and I take pride in that. Although I will say that the longer the trip, the more desensitized I become to germs along the way.

best travel fan for europe

Accommodation Travel Accessories for Europe

Surge protector.

Between your phone, camera, and laptop, you need to not only bring 3 different adapters, but also find 3 outlets in the room where you are staying. Things get real messy if you add a curling iron into the mix. Instead, why not purchase one or two adapters and use this surge protector to plug in all the tech essentials. Now you hopefully won’t end up charging your laptop in the bathroom sink because that is the only plug available.

best travel fan for europe

Travel Adapter

Adapters are the ultimate travel necessities for Europe. I recommend buying a universal plug so you don’t have to worry about switching adapters if you are traveling between the UK, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, etc.

best travel fan for europe

Travel Steamer

To be fair, this isn’t a travel accessory that I use. I make a concerted effort to bring clothes that don’t wrinkle –usually a combination of polyester and spandex is best. But, I know many people, especially those traveling for business, who swear by a travel steamer . If you are traveling for a special event or for business, then a travel steamer is a great accessory to bring to Europe, especially if you don’t know if your accommodation will have an iron.

best travel fan for europe

Laundry Essentials

The crazy looking contraption below is a travel clothesline , so that if you do need to do laundry during your Europe trip, you won’t find the wet socks you left out on the balcony on the street corner of your hotel after an unexpected windstorm.

Is laundry detergent a travel necessity? Eh. Depends on who you ask. You can go ahead and use that bar of soap in the hotel; but, you might need something a bit stronger should you spill that glass of red wine on white jeans. Or worse yet, olive oil…I don’t think there has been a trip to Europe where I do not spill olive oil on the majority of the clothes I own.

best travel fan for europe

Hostel Travel Essentials

Travel lock.

Lock your luggage/backpack as well as the locker in your hostel dorm room to prevent theft. Many hostels sell locks for a euro or two, but it is definitely more cost-effective to bring your own.

best travel fan for europe

Shower Shoes

You don’t want to go barefoot in a hostel shower. I love that these flip flops have holes along the bottom so that they dry quickly. I have always brought along a pair of my $1 Old Navy flip flops which I love. But, they always leave a trail of water in the bathroom into the dorm room and don’t dry well. So, if you have room in your backpack/luggage, I highly recommend purchasing shoes specifically intended for the shower .

best travel fan for europe

Microfiber Quick-Dry Towel

Here’s a scenario: Check-out time is at 11:00 so you quickly grab some free breakfast downstairs and speedily take a shower. You are throwing your belongings in your backpack and realize you have this soaking wet towel and nowhere to put it. That is why you need a microfiber quick-dry towel . On my last Europe trip, one of my hostel roommates was lamenting about his wet towel situation and after I told him about the microfiber towels, he bought one off Amazon and had it shipped to his next hostel. And no, you don’t get free shipping in Europe if you are a Prime member in the states, so buy ahead of time.

best travel fan for europe

There is always that one hotel roommate who has zero qualms about turning the light on at 3AM after a night out of partying. Wear an eye mask so that you don’t wake up startled when this inevitably happens.

best travel fan for europe

That same hostel roommate who turns the light on at 3AM will also be up at 6AM to check-out before an early flight. He/she will make an absurd amount of noise as they pack up their belongings and as you wake up for a second time in a 3 hour period, you’ll find yourself struggling to go back to sleep while you wonder how and why this person chose to subject themselves to practically zero rest. Ear plugs can help you avoid this to a certain extent. I always bring Hearos earplugs with me, but the Macks are another reader fan-favorite.

best travel fan for europe

Sightseeing Travel Necessities for Europe

Collapsible or filtered water bottle.

It is astounding how much water you will go through on your trip to Europe, especially during the summer. You will always want to carry around a bottle of water with you. I promise. Instead of purchasing plastic water bottles from the grocery store or local shops, plan ahead and bring a reusable bottle. It will not only save you money, but also help the environment. If you are worried about space, then a collapsible water bottle is the perfect option. And, if you are going to a country where you shouldn’t drink the tap water, buy a filtered bottle instead!

best travel fan for europe

I wanted to include my favorite sunscreen on this list of essentials for European travel. Thanks mom for being obsessed with all things beauty and handing me hers the morning I left for three months in Europe. This Australian Gold sunscreen does not feel sticky at all when you put it on your face. It is also a tinted moisturizer so you don’t need to put on goopy foundation on an especially hot day. Everyone’s skin is different, so this product like every other has the potential to break you out, but I have pretty sensitive skin and had no issues!

Portable Charger

One of my top travel essentials for Europe is the Anker portable charger . You don’t realize how quickly your battery drains when you are using Google Maps to navigate, TripAdvisor to pick your lunch spot, and your camera to take photos and videos. The Anker portable charger is a bit heavy, but it charges so incredibly fast and has been a life saver (literally) so many times, that it is absolutely worth the extra weight. Note: the one pictured is slightly smaller than the one I use and consequently, lighter weight. Anker is SUCH a well-made product. I highly recommend you choose one from their line.

If you plan on going in a body of water during your Europe trip, it doesn’t hurt to pack a waterproof case to store your phone. The cases are inexpensive and useful for boat rides and hiking among other things.

Summer Travel Essentials

Long-sleeve button down shirt.

I did not even think about packing a long-sleeve button down shirt on my last trip to Europe because I didn’t own one and I never even fathomed that I would want to wear long sleeves in the summer. Well, if you saw how burned my shoulders got after a month in Greece, then you would understand why I have now purchased the Madewell White Tie-Front shirt and stood in a Nordstrom for 40 minutes as they shipped the last Medium in the company from Anchorage, Alaska to Los Angeles. And if you were curious, the next week these shirts were back in stock on Madewell. Of course. Moral of the anecdote is that you too should purchase a long-sleeve button down shirt to keep your shoulders, neck, and back out of the summer heat during a long day of sightseeing.

Water Shoes for Rocky Beaches

There are a lot of beaches in Europe that aren’t sandy, but pebbly. I have worn flip flops from the sand into the ocean water, but the water pressure makes it extremely difficult to keep the flip flops on your feet while in the water. I recommend bringing a pair of water shoes if you do plan on going into the ocean water in Europe or hiking any waterfalls. I know it is an extra shoe to store in your luggage, so I would recommend doing research before your trip and see what kind of beaches can be found at your destination. If the beaches are sandy and not rocky, then these may not be necessary! Otherwise, you will want to bring a pair along.

Turkish Towel for Beach

If you are visiting one destination and staying at a hotel with a private beach, do not waste space in your suitcase with a beach towel. But, for those of you visiting multiple destinations and staying at a variety of accommodations, then a Turkish towel is a Europe travel essential. The towel is so thin and it dries quickly. The only flaw is that if you are in a windy destination, the towel isn’t as sturdy as your traditional towel because it is so lightweight and compact.

Packable Hat

Protect yourself from the sun with this foldable hat . I never brought a sun hat on my travels because I didn’t ever want to carry it around with me any time I was switching locations. Luckily, they have made hats geared for travelers that are packable.

Mosquito Repellent Products

Will these products work for you? This question reminds me of someone asking you what you think about flying easyJet or any other budget airline. Some people will have great experiences and others won’t. It’s completely subjective. The same thing goes for mosquito repellant products. These accessories will work for some and won’t for others. That is why I provided a variety of options for you to choose from. I get massively infected mosquito bites –the kind where I need to visit the cruise hospital and go on antibiotics kind of mosquito bites — so I am willing to try anything and everything. Zyrtec has been most effective for me, but I also wanted to include these products that have overwhelmingly positive reviews because hopefully you don’t have quite as a severe reaction to bites as I do.

The 9 Best Power Adapters for European Travel of 2024

Keep your devices charged and moving your trip along

TripSavvy / Chloe Jeong

One thing you don't want to forget on your next trip to Europe ? The right power adapter. Without it, you won't be able to keep the electronics and devices you need juiced up and ready to go. But finding the right one can be tricky: Each region of the world has its own outlet shape, so you'll need to find the one that works for your travel destination—or invest in a universal one. Also, consider the number of devices you'll likely bring and how much you're willing to spend.

Final Verdict

  • What to Look For

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, foval voltage converter.

User-friendly

Not suitable for heat tools

While many modern devices can transition automatically between different voltages, some can't. This is where the Foval Power Step-Down Converter comes in. Although priced higher than most adapters, it converts 220/240 volts to 110/120 volts, allowing you to use your single-voltage American appliances in Europe seamlessly. Plus, it has a European power cable and three removable adapters for the U.S., the U.K., and Australia, so you can also use it for other trips. This made it convenient for our product tester, Rebekah Joan , to travel with the device, only needing to attach the correct adapter, plug it into a socket, and press the power button to get it to work.

With two standard U.S. plugs and four 5-volt USB ports, you can charge an array of devices simultaneously—just make sure that the total wattage doesn't exceed 200. "It started making a quiet whirring noise, and in a second or two, our devices were charging at a normal pace," Joan said. "We charged plenty with it, including our phones, a portable charger, and our camera. Other than the expected slight delay, everything ran smoothly."

The converter automatically shuts down to prevent overloading, overheating, or short-circuiting, limiting hazards to you and your devices. Be wary of using curling irons, hair dryers, or hair straighteners, as Foval notes that it isn't designed to be used with these tools. It is only compatible with devices within the 110-to-120-volt range, which includes most American devices. What makes up for this is the converter's small size, measuring 4.8 x 3.1 x 1.5 inches for a device that "will save you space and money," according to our tester. There is also a detachable 5-foot cord for easy packing.

Out Power: 230 watts max | Dimensions: 4.8 x 3.13 x 1.47 inches | USB Ports: 4

Best Universal

Haozi universal travel adapter.

Covers Europe and beyond

Generous warranty

Not compatible with heat tools

In addition to a single AC power socket, the HAOZI Universal Travel Adapter features two USB ports—all of which can be used simultaneously. It's FCC, CE, and RoHS certified, while a lifetime guarantee gives you confidence in your purchase. The downsides? It's not suitable for use with high-powered appliances, including hair dryers, and at 2.2 x 3.2 x 2.6 inches, it's slightly bulkier than your standard single adapter.

If you travel frequently, consider investing in the HAOZI All-in-One Universal Travel Adapter rather than limiting yourself to one exclusively for Europe. Product tester Rebekah Joan tested the adapter's reliability abroad and noticed a slight delay in the electricity getting from one point to another. "After those few initial seconds, it charged our devices smoothly and without making a sound," she said. "We did notice a slight issue with some of the prongs getting stuck on the way out, but it was easily fixed by wiggling the slider back and forth."

Travelers from North America may need a voltage converter for non-dual-voltage devices, but Joan found that the adapter worked as well with a converter as it did alone. This is also an excellent purchase for those planning a European trip with stops in countries that don't accept the standard Type E/F plug. Interchangeable input and outlet sockets allow you to use the power adapter in more than 150 countries.

Out Power: 660 watts max at 110 volts, 1,380 watts max at 230 volts | Dimensions: 3.2 x 2.2 x 2.6 inches | USB Ports: 2

Best Lightweight

Ceptics world travel adapter kit.

Packs easily

Covers several regions

Comes with a travel pouch

Only supports dual-voltage electronics

If you often travel abroad for business, a compact and reliable adapter system is in order. That's what you get with the all-in-one World Adapter Kit from Ceptics. It has two U.S.-grounded inputs, two USB ports, and a USB-C cable.

No matter where you're headed, this lightweight (12.8 ounces altogether) kit has you covered. Six international adapters easily switch out and provide Quick Charge 3.0 power in North America, the United Kingdom, most of Europe, Australia, Japan, parts of Africa, the Middle East, China, and more. Features such as built-in surge protection and voltage indicator LEDs add peace of mind. Unfortunately, this system does not convert voltage, i.e., it is not curling iron friendly.

Out Power: 1,250 watts | Dimensions: 2.75 x 1.5 x 3.75 inches | USB Ports: 2

Best Budget

Orei power adapter plug.

Hair dryer compatible

Updated model

Excludes some big tourist countries

The OREI European Power Adapter Plug is a no-frills, cost-effective solution for American travelers to Europe and Russia. It is compatible with Type E/F plugs and should work in most countries except Italy, Switzerland, and the U.K. Plus, it fits into the recessed, circular plug sockets found in many parts of Western Europe and standard square-faced sockets.

Its newly improved design features internal metal interfaces for better conductivity. The power adapter plug has a maximum capacity of 250 volts and can accommodate devices that require up to 3,000 watts of power (including most hair dryers). Be aware, though, that it is only suitable for dual-voltage appliances. You can use the dual ports to charge two devices simultaneously—which is especially handy in hotel rooms with limited plug sockets. The universal input accepts plugs from most countries except South Africa.

Out Power: 3,000 watts max at 250 volts | Dimensions: 1 x 1 x 1 inches | USB Ports: 0

Best for the U.K.

Ceptics travel adapter plug.

Great value

Sleek design

Limited geographic utility

Designed in the U.S., the Ceptics Type G Travel Adapter Plug keeps things simple for those planning a vacation to the U.K. (where standard European adapters won’t work). The plug also works for British Overseas Territories and ex-colonies within Europe, including Gibraltar and Cyprus, as well as other destinations like Hong Kong and Dubai. Your purchase includes three adapters, allowing you to simultaneously utilize all the sockets in your hotel room.

Each power adapter features two inputs, both of which accept two-prong polarized U.S. plugs or three-prong grounded U.S. plugs. They have a maximum load rating of 250 volts and are suitable for dual-voltage appliances only. The product’s limited lifetime warranty means you can return faulty adapters for a free replacement.

Out Power: 2,500 watts at 220-240 volts | Dimensions: 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.75 inches | USB Ports: 2

Best for Switzerland

Tessan swiss outlet adapter for us to switzerland.

Charges up to three devices

Power light

All ports face the same way

Must be paired with a converter

The TESSAN Swiss Outlet adapter has three different charging ports: two for USB charging and one for standard U.S. prongs. The USB charging ports can charge up to 2.4 amperes and are compatible with all USB charging devices, such as your phone, camera, tablet, and more. It is also the ideal size for travel, measuring just 2.8 x 2.1 x 2.67 inches, and can be used in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and some areas of Rwanda. Plus, the adapter features a blue indicator light to tell you when it is on or off.

A converter is needed with this adapter, as it is only compatible with devices between the range of 100 to 250 volts.

Out Power: 2,500 watts at 250 volts max | Dimensions: 2.8 x 2.1 x 2.67 inches | USB Ports: 2

Best for Italy

Orei adapter plug.

CE certified and RoHS compliant

Each piece can charge two devices

Supports almost any traveler in Italy

Very specific utility

If you’re planning a trip to Italy , the OREI USA to Italy Travel Adapter Plug is your best choice. The two-pack includes two Type L plugs for charging devices in Italy and the microstate of San Marino. Both adapters feature dual inputs, which allow them to accommodate two U.S. plugs at the same time. One of the inputs is universal and can accept plugs from any country except those that use Type M plugs (e.g., South Africa, Eswatini, and Lesotho). The adapters are also free of substances such as lead, cadmium, and mercury, giving you added peace of mind.

Out Power: 3,000 watts at 250 volts | Dimensions: 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 inches | USB Ports: 0

Best for France

Tessan type e/f plug adapter.

Supports up to five devices

Limited compatibility range

Although this type of E/F plug can be used in other parts of Europe, such as Germany and Spain, it is especially great if you plan on taking a trip to France. The adapter is considered to be five in one, with two AC outlets for standard U.S. prongs and three USB ports to charge multiple devices at once. It may only be compatible with devices between 100 and 250 volts, but the plug has an impressive max capacity of 2,300 watts and is lightweight.

Out Power: 2,300 watts at max 230 volts | Dimensions: 3.62 x 2.85 x 1.77 inches | USB Ports: 3

Best Design

Mogics super bagel.

Innovative, self-contained design

Auto-reset fuse

Comes with a case

May not work in South Korea

It is tempting to reach for universal adapters to cover all your current and future travel plans. However, these tech powerhouses tend to be bulky and frustrating to pack. MOGICS has crafted a clever device to combat this—and it doesn't hurt that it's super cute as well.

The Super Bagel is a universal power adapter that features two types of USB ports, and the type C is capable of fast, 18-watt charging when used independently. The MA1 adapter pops out of the center and features four different plug configurations for use in the U.S., U.K., European Union, and Australia. The bagel section houses five AC sockets and a handy 3-foot-long extension cord to reach any wall outlet.

Out Power: 18-20 watts via USB ports | Dimensions: 1.57 x 3.57 x 3.57 inches | USB Ports: 2

Traveling comes with its share of stressors, so why not eliminate the headache of trying to find a compatible charging system on the ground in your destination and pick up the FOVAL Voltage Converter before you leave? It covers large tourist hubs, comes with a 5-foot cable, and has an automatic shutoff feature if something goes wrong. If you plan to venture to other countries besides Europe, the HAOZI Universal Travel Adapter is an excellent choice.

What to Look For in a Power Adapter

Universal use.

The general rule is that the more universal the plug, the bulkier it is. If you’re taking a backpacking trip across Europe—or traveling with just a carry-on—get an adapter only designed for Europe. You won’t need the weight or size of one designed for Australia or South America, for example—so why bother?

Number of Devices

Consider a charging station if you’re a gadget head bringing plenty of electronics. They can handle multiple electronics on the same strip, with USB charging ports and regular outlets to spare. Sure, they’re a little more expensive, but it’s one (or three) fewer things to leave behind in a hotel room.

Simpler adapters tend to be cheaper. Think about how much you want to spend, particularly if this is your first trip out of the U.S. If you have future trips in mind, consider spending a bit more on an adapter that can do more.

Check the adapter’s packaging or online description to see what countries or regions it’s marked as compatible with.

A universal adapter connects you to many regions’ types of plugs in one single unit. Plug adapters, on the other hand, have different plugs you swap out depending on the region you’re in. Universal adapters tend to be on the bulkier side (a common style is a cube with outlets for multiple regions and even USB chargers built into it). A plug adapter keeps a little lower profile, so if you’re making a point to travel light and are only going to a region or two, this might be your best bet.

Check the voltage of your electronics against the voltage your adapter says it’s converting. (If you’re unsure what it is, Google or look at the instructions or manual for your device.) The voltage shouldn't be an issue for most generic devices and things like hair straighteners.

Fan purchase

Since hotels may not have air conditioning, I like to travel with a small fan (about 5-9 inches tall) for use on my nightstand. I would like to purchase one from a European store/manufacturer that has the EU plug. This way I do not have to mess with adapters or be concerned that the voltage may burn up the fan. My online search of stores like COOP (Switzerland) has not been successful. Any suggestions?

I'm always carrying a travel fan with me in the summer months, so I can relate. However, mine have always just used batteries. Importantly, I take out the batteries when I pack them up, because otherwise, the fan always seems to switch to "on" when it's jostled around in my luggage. This is the one I use - it's only a 5" but it's quite good. https://www.amazon.com/O2COOL-Portable-Operated-D-Battery-Household/dp/B001B16VT6/ref=sr_1_27?ie=UTF8&qid=1523018976&sr=8-27&keywords=travel+fan

I travel with a small fan but much smaller than what you are suggesting. Both are USB powered.

USB Mini Fan . This very small fan can be plugged into anything with a USB port or micro USB port. I use it with a portable backup battery. It is very strong and keeps me cool when placed on the nightstand. Even run all night it uses up a very small amount of battery power.

Mini USB Box Fan . This small box fan's handle folds up and sits easily on the nightstand. It has three speeds. Even at the slowest speed it will keep me cool.

I now travel with the first one. Since both are USB powered there is no need to find one with a European plug. They also take up less room. They won't cool down a room but they will keep your head cool while sleeping and that is what makes the difference. Both are practically silent.

Frank from "Freedonia" is right, USB fans are great. However, the mini one he suggests is not as flexible as some others. I like the kind that have flexible necks and are as cheap as $1 each. Go to aliexpress.com and search for usb fan.

This is great - we are going to be in Provence in July and one of our airbnb's doesn't have AC - I didn't see people complaining about it being really hot, so maybe it'll be fine. But I'll def check some of these portable fans!

Thank you for your responses. As Wendy suggested I have consider battery powered and felt the weight of the batteries would be minimal. I also am looking at the fans with the USB plugs. But in my search for the best option, I thought a fan with an EU plug would be the best. After all, "when in Rome, do as the Romans." On my last trip to Europe, I popped into every store I passed, big and small. But the smallest fans were tabletop size, not travel size. It seems like it should be out there somewhere. If not, the other options are there.

It may be better to just buy one there. On a RS tour of Eastern Europe, a tourmate purchased a full size oscillating fan at a hardware store in Prague (she used it for white noise). She hauled that puppy all over E. Europe and then left it with the bus driver at the end of the tour. You may have to ask the hotel or a local what type of store will carry fans - they may also be considered a seasonal item that you wouldn't have seen on prior trips. Good luck!

Or spring for a $1 adapter plug, which surely you'll have other uses for, and buy a little fan here if you can get a dual-voltage model.

Frank II has found a couple of slick little products, but I wonder how much they weigh. No indications on the Amazon site.

One year we happened to have a car, we stopped in (Loire Valley) at the French equivalent of Home Depot. We bought a steel-framed small box fan, maybe 12" or 14" square, with a Shuco plug. It's cumbersom to pack, but international air usually has at least one free bag. We saw lots of Target stores (that actual brand) in places like Paris.

I can tell you that I used to run a regular American 20" box fan with a tourist TRANSFORMER (I'm using a technical term, a passive, two coil, voltage changing device for AC only). The transformer was rated about 110 watts, and did get pretty warm. That Franzus (?) transformer had a poorly made Euro plug built onto it - it fitted some continental plug adaptors too loosely.

The box fan weighs 6.2 oz.

The smaller fan weighs.......0.75 oz. (Not including backup battery which will vary on how much power it has.)

I got the smaller fans from China off of ebay for like $4 for two including shipping. It took about six weeks to get to me.

Frank II - thanks for the recommendations. I just booked some accommodations in July at places that probably have no aircon (northern Europe, but - you know, heat waves happen) so now I'm thinking about something to move the air around, and had a couple questions about the two units you recommended.

The super-small "helicopter" fan looks intriguing but two things make me wonder: first, the odd combo USB plug looks like something that might quickly fail. Does yours seem fairly robust? I'm not sure I can think of any use for the micro-usb variant of the plug. Second, have you found it difficult to get the thing positioned properly so it points where you want it? This seems like it might be tricky to aim. How about the potential for it to be crushed while en route? Does the rotor pop off easily enough for packing?

The "box" unit (that would be a round "box", no?) looks like it would move a lot more air, but is obvious much bulkier that the little "helicopter". You have both, have traveled with both, and now just use the little "helicopter" one?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

David, The fans I use are so cheap ($1) that I just bring 2 with me. I haven't used them much, but they still work well. The ones I get come apart so they can fold flat. Here's the ones I'm talking about:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Portable-Mini-Notebook-Laptop-Desktop-Super-Mute-PC-USB-Cooler-Cooling-Desk-Fan/32831301305.html

They do take weeks to come via mail, but I've dealt with AliExpress for years with no problems.

If you are staying in hotels, the hotel might also provide fans. You might want to ask.

I bought a USB fan the size you mentioned from Bed Bath and Beyond here in Canada. With the USB you don't need to worry about voltage and I just plugged it into the wall using my all purpose wall USB plug - I think you could even use your phone charger with a plug adapter. I have a USB charging plug that has a European end.

I used it in Portugal to keep the kids comfortable and it worked well.

Where's your first stop? I'd check out Amazon for that country and see what they are selling. Once you know what's available it will be easier to find a store that sells it. Or maybe you could buy online and have it shipped to your hotel.

The Best Travel Plug Adapter

A group of some of our picks arranged on a wooden table.

If you want to use electronic devices in a different country, you’ll probably need a travel plug adapter. After spending more than 30 hours researching and testing 14 options, we found the Epicka Universal Travel Adapter to be the best one. It fits four types of outlets, and it has more USB ports than any of its competitors, so it can can charge more devices at higher speeds.

Everything we recommend

best travel fan for europe

Epicka Universal Travel Adapter

Best universal travel adapter.

With four plugs that will work in most countries, plus faster-charging USB ports (and more of them) than its competitors, this adapter is the best all-around choice.

Ceptics International Worldwide Travel Plug Adapter 5 Piece Set

The best plug adapter.

Individually, these tiny plug adapters are smaller, lighter, and cheaper than any universal travel adapter. To juice up multiple devices, though, you’d need a separate multiport charger too.

best travel fan for europe

Ceptics Plug Adapter Set

Heavier, but sturdier.

The plugs in this set of five are bigger and heavier than our top pick for plug adapters, but more solidly built.

In a sea of almost-identical travel adapters, the Epicka Universal Travel Adapter stands out, combining the best of the features we were looking for. It contains the three most common international plugs and a US-style plug, which should cover you in the majority of countries around the world. It has the most USB ports—four of the standard USB-A and one USB-C—of any universal adapter we tested, and it could charge more of our devices faster. A replaceable fuse and an included spare should take the brunt of any accidental, unfortunate, or shockingly bad connections. The Epicka is fairly compact and well built, and it even comes with a nylon case.

However, no universal travel adapter is truly universal, and they’re all a lot bulkier and more expensive than simple plug adapters. If you want the smallest adapter possible, or if you’re going someplace where a universal adapter won’t work (more on that in a minute), then a plug adapter could be what you need.

The Ceptics tiny plug adapters are barely larger than the prongs they convert. Small, simple, and cheap, they’re perfect for someone who wants to carry only the adapter they’ll need and who already has a multiport USB wall charger they like. Like our universal adapter picks, this set contains the three most common international plugs and the US plug. However, it also includes a somewhat rarer plug used in some European countries that has two thick, cylindrical prongs. This means that the Ceptics will likely cover you in even more places—as long as you pack the appropriate plug adapter.

These plug adapters are bigger than our top pick for plug adapters, but this means they offer a larger surface for chargers to brace against, which makes them more stable and less likely to fall off the wall. (We’ll call these “ Ceptics White ” to minimize confusion and set them apart from our “Ceptics Black” top pick.) While you can purchase these as a five-pack, which contains basically the same assortment of plugs as the Ceptics Black set, the company also sells, in this same model line, three-packs for nearly a dozen specific regions. So if you’re headed to a country not covered by the so-called universal travel adapters (for example, Brazil , India , Israel , or South Africa ), or if you want to purchase multiple adapters for your gear, there’s probably an option available here.

A note up here, which we’ll discuss in detail below: All of these are adapters only . They do not convert voltage. The majority of your electronic devices only need adapters—the voltage converter is built into the charger itself. (If the device charges via USB, just about any USB port will suffice, though different ports may provide different charging speeds.) Check out Do you need a voltage converter? if you’re curious about these aspects.

The research

Why you should trust us, who should get this, how we picked, how we tested, our pick: epicka universal travel adapter, flaws but not dealbreakers, our pick: ceptics international worldwide travel plug adapter 5 piece set, runner-up: ceptics adapter plug set for worldwide international travel use, do you need a voltage converter, the competition.

In addition to my work here at Wirecutter, I also write about tech and travel for CNET, Forbes, and Wirecutter’s parent company, The New York Times . Perhaps more relevant to this guide, I usually spend a good chunk of each year (global pandemics aside) as a digital nomad, living months at a time in different countries all over the world. My current country count is 50, spread across six continents, and since I travel with a lot of electronics gear for work, being able to plug in is obviously crucial.

I’ve owned and used many different types of universal-style travel adapters, and several different companies’ worth of plug adapters, plus I’ve talked with countless travelers about what they like … or, more important, what they hate. We also got some advice from Wirecutter's Mark Smirniotis, who used to oversee our power devices section.

Do you travel? Are you going to travel sometime in the (near or far) future? Do you want to be able to charge or use electronic devices in a different country? If so, you’re probably going to need a travel plug adapter. There’s a variety of different outlet types around the world, not to mention different voltages and frequencies, so you can’t expect your phone charger to just plug in and work wherever you’re headed. Sure, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and many other countries use the same small pair of prongs as the US, but places like continental Europe, the UK, Australia, India, Russia, and pretty much everywhere else do not.

A front look at a wall outlet with two standard plugs in addition to a USB-A and USB-C port.

You have two main choices when it comes to travel plug adapters: the universal-style travel adapters (that’s one device with multiple sets of prongs that you extend and retract) and smaller, individual plug adapters that usually come in sets. Both have pros and cons.

Should you get a universal travel adapter or a simple plug adapter?

Universal travel adapters are for the person who wants one handy adapter that will work in just about every country. You can keep it next to your passport and toss it in your luggage when you’re packing. The ones we considered have USB ports, so you don’t need to worry about bringing a separate charger for anything that charges via USB (think  phones  and noise-cancelling headphones ). However, these are bulky, they have parts that can break, and even the best will take longer to charge your phone or tablet than will a good USB wall charger .

The alternative is small and simple plug adapters. These attach to the prongs of your current USB charger (whether it’s a multiport one or the charger that came with your device) to allow them to fit into a foreign outlet. These can work because nearly every modern charger can adjust to the available voltage in pretty much every country, as long as you can adapt the prongs to fit in the outlet. (More on this in Do you need a voltage converter? ) These are great for people who already have a multiport USB charger they like and don’t want to deal with the additional bulk of a universal travel adapter. Also, these are necessary if you’re traveling to a country that has outlets incompatible with any of the four types included in a universal adapter (which, as that sentence reveals, aren’t actually universal).

The choice between universal travel adapters and individual plug adapters ultimately comes down to personal preference. Both types work, and different people will like or dislike each. If you’re not sure which will be best for you, read each section here closely.

Here’s the big caveat: If you’re planning on bringing something with you that has a motor, a heating element, or a single power cord that leads directly from the plug to the device (i.e. there’s no power brick or wall wart ), it almost certainly won’t work with a travel plug adapter. Most people will only need one of the adapter choices we recommend, but very occasionally there’s a piece of gear that needs a voltage converter. For more on that topic, also check out the voltage converters section below.

Where in the world will your travel plug adapter work?

All universal travel adapters have four different sets of prongs, which cover most countries most Americans tend to travel to. First is the big, wide-blade UK-style plug (often designated "Type G”) . This will work in places like the UK, obviously, and also Ireland, Hong Kong, and some other parts of Asia and the Middle East.

A view of the slim outlets found in Italy.

Next is the round Europe-style plug, aka the Europlug (Type C) . However, this is where we run into complications. This plug should work in most of Europe—it was designed, in fact, to fit into a wide range of European outlet types. For instance, parts of Italy, Switzerland, and Denmark each use different plugs from one another. Should this double-round one work in those locations? Yes. Will it? Hard to say. I’ve stayed in places where my Europlug didn’t work, yet it did in the hostel before and the hotel after—all within the same small region of a country. With any luck, if this happens to you, the place you’re staying will have a power strip that will let you plug in, though there’s no guarantee of that.

Third is the angled small-blade style (Type I) found in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and other parts of Oceania, and a few other areas. Some universal adapters have one set of blades for this and the US style—you just manually rotate the blades into the correct position depending on where you are. In our testing, we had no trouble getting them to work.

The last, the small US-style blades (Type A or B) , mean you could use our picks to visit the US and other countries that have the same plugs—if, that is, you’re reading this from outside the US.

What are the places not covered by these four styles? Some parts of Brazil, South Africa, India, and more. I’ve stayed in parts of Italy, for example, that should have Europlugs but only had something called Type L . I’ve stayed in houses in Brazil that had Type N , but the Europlug fit enough to work. In others, it wouldn’t.

To find out which plugs you might need while traveling, refer to the excellent Wikipedia article called Mains electricity by country that shows pictures of (almost) all the possible plugs and outlets, along with a list of the world’s countries and (almost all of) the style or styles they use. This is invaluable information to check before you leave. If multiple plug types are listed for a specific country and you’re staying in an older building, you should probably assume its outlets will require whatever plug isn’t on a universal travel adapter, since these only have the most common, newer varieties of plugs.

Which brings us to perhaps the most important fact: Getting your gear to work in different countries isn’t quite as simple as it should be, and there’s no single solution that’s guaranteed to work for everyone. Our picks should work for you, but you may have some random piece of equipment, or be traveling to some country, for which our “good for most” picks just won’t work. (Case in point: One Wirecutter editor visited Iceland recently. The house she stayed in had outlets unlike anything on Wikipedia’s chart, and the plug adapters she’d used elsewhere in Reykjavik didn’t fit at all. It turns out the mystery sockets belonged to an obscure Italian system from the 1960s that was popular in Iceland for a time. Luckily, the hosts had power strips in the house that her adapters fit into.) We’ll try to mention such potential caveats when we can, but the world is a big place, and when it comes to electricity and wall outlets, there’s a lot of variation. That’s important to keep in mind.

The collection of our outlet adapter picks arrayed on a table.

There are approximately 70 billion universal travel plug adapters on the Web. However, after spending 20 hours staring at them, I found there’s only about a dozen basic designs—and countless “companies” selling them. Among those dozen or so actually different products, I saw a few distinctions that helped narrow the field. Since most options had four USB ports, that seemed like a reasonable minimum to require. Their maximum power output, rated in amps, became a determining factor in our rankings. The higher the maximum output, the faster the port will charge your gear.

Some plugs came with a replaceable fuse, which seemed like a good idea, and a few included a replacement for said fuse, which seemed even better. This way, if either you plug the adapter into a sketchy outlet or a roommate at the hostel uses your adapter to plug in their completely necessary portable arc welder, the fuse will go, not your adapter. Then it’s just a matter of swapping in the included spare fuse and you’re good to go.

These fuses have a maximum power rating, and therefore the adapters have a maximum wattage rating. However, you shouldn’t be connecting anything with a high enough power draw to trip these fuses. Check out Do you need a voltage converter? for more information. The short version is that recharging portable electronic devices is fine, but powering anything that has a motor or heats up is not. Nearly every appliance or device has its power draw written on it somewhere , so worst case, you can compare that to what’s listed on the adapter. And so you don’t have to look it up, volts × amps = watts.

The other option we considered and tested is individual plug adapters. These small adapters attach to the prongs of your current charger so they’ll plug into a foreign outlet. In deciding which of these to test, we judged by size and available plug-type options. As you’ll see with our two picks, one is exceptionally small, and the other offers sturdier plugs that are available in a range of plug types that’s wide enough to cover you no matter where in the world you’re headed.

The universal travel adapters are far more similar to one another than they are different. However, getting in a dozen and playing with them for a while revealed that some felt better put together than others. After spending several minutes with each one, forcefully extending the various plugs, slamming them back in, and just being fairly rough with them, I found it easy to tell which felt like they’d last a few trips, and which wouldn’t. None felt like you’d own them for a lifetime. Since none are expensive, though, this didn’t seem like a major issue.

All had a US-style plug, so I tested each one in several outlets around my house—some new, some old. I didn’t find much difference in how they fit and worked. I connected several chargers and plugs to the output side of each adapter as well. Again, not much difference. Last, I checked how bright the LED on each was, since a too-bright LED keeping me awake has been a pet peeve of mine for years. Many USB chargers have LEDs bright enough to practically read from; I eliminated any universal adapter that had this problem.

For the plug adapters, I tried plugging in several devices, as well as inserting them into outlets around my house. I checked how tight the connections were and how they felt overall. Would they fall apart with simple use or perhaps hold up to being tossed around in bags for a few weeks or months?

In reality, the testing for all the adapter types didn’t reveal much variation in terms of performance. These are all remarkably similar products. How they felt to use and their different features played a far bigger role in establishing our final picks.

Our pick the Epicka sitting on a table by itself.

While all the universal travel adapters we tested included the same three types of plugs (plus the familiar US-style one), they differed in how many USB ports each had and how quickly they could charge—and that’s where the Epicka Universal Travel Adapter excelled. It has five USB ports: four of the standard USB-A size and one of the newer USB-C. (You may not have a USB-C device at the moment, but you likely will in the future.) These will let you charge, say, three phones, two tablets, and—via the adapter’s main plug—a camera battery that has its own wall charger, all at once.

In addition, and just as important, is the maximum power output: 5.6 amps. This was the highest of all the adapters we considered, which means you can charge more of your devices at higher speeds before hitting the max output.

Keep in mind that the maximum output per USB-A port is 2.4 amps, the max on the USB-C port is 3 amps, and if you’re using all five ports you won’t be able to charge every connected device at full speed—it’ll only give you that 5.6 amp output in total . The output is still far lower than what you can get from a decent USB charger combined with our pick for a simple plug adapter (more on that in the plug adapter section , below), but it’s significantly better than most universal travel adapters, which often max out under 3 amps total.

The Epicka has three sliders on one side, with a button on the other to lock/unlock your chosen plug in place. This arrangement feels more secure than the semi-locking or slide-locking system that some other universals use. However, this is plastic-on-plastic, so don’t expect a tank. As these things go, the Epicka feels sturdy. The US and Australia share a pair of prongs—you twist the prongs manually to set them up for an angled Australia-style outlet.

A look at the four USB-A ports on the underside of our pick.

The four regular USB plugs are all on one side, which is tidier than the “flailing gibbon” look of some other universal adapters.

The above details were what put the Epicka at the top of our list, but the adapter has a few other features that are the cherry on top, so to speak. For instance, it comes with a small nylon case and a USB cable with a split end, so it works with either Micro-USB or Lightning devices. While the adapter has an LED to show you it’s working, the glow isn’t so bright as to be a distraction at night.

A look at the adjustable sliders.

One last note. There are multiple Epicka universal adapters, and even Epicka can’t keep the names straight. We’ve seen this one called, variously, Universal Travel Adapter, International Travel Adapter, Travel Adapter-2, Universal USB Travel Power Adapter (2018), and even Universal Travel Adapter One Worldwide International Wall Charger AC Plug Adaptor with 5.6A Smart Power 3.0A USB Type-C for USA EU UK AUS Cell Phone Tablet Laptop (Grey). Best to follow the link above. Also, you may find another company selling a twin of this. The Epicka has the most reviews and offers free shipping with Prime. The other options we saw have few or no reviews, or charge outrageous shipping costs.

As with all of these adapters, I wouldn’t expect the Epicka to last forever. Given its locking design and case, it’s probably going to last longer than many others, but all of these are almost entirely inexpensive plastic devices. Just something to keep in mind.

While the prongs themselves felt secure, and being able to lock them into place was nice, it’s entirely possible that the size and weight of the adapter, plus whatever you’ve plugged into it, could pull it out of an outlet. That is, unfortunately, a risk with every universal adapter.

Another risk with any universal adapter—as we mentioned above—is that it’s not going to work where you’re headed. Epicka claims it will work in 150 countries, but there are more than 200 countries (the exact number is harder to pin down than you might realize) . And even in each of those 150 countries, there’s no guarantee that the adapter will work in every outlet in every building. Plug adapters are a somewhat safer bet to work specifically where you’re going, but they have their own downsides, which we’ll discuss below.

Also, while the Epicka is a little smaller than some of the others we tested, all universal adapters are much bulkier than plug adapters. As someone who has spent most of the past several years traveling, I feel plug adapters are far easier and less annoying to deal with. This is largely why we have two recommendations for that category.

A group of our adapter picks.

The Ceptics Plug Adapter set combines everything we were looking for in plug adapters: small size, solid build quality, and—well, small size is really the thing here. Each adapter is no larger than it needs to be to fit over the American-style prongs of your charger. The plastic feels solid and not flimsy. Each adapter has the region or countries it should be used in written on the side. The five plugs in the set are the same four as you’ll find on the universal adapters recommended above, plus the thicker, round European-style prongs used in parts of France, parts of Asia, and elsewhere.

Though the set comes with a small case, you probably wouldn’t be traveling with the entire set very often. Instead, you’d pack just the specific adapter or adapters you’d be using on each trip. These are for the person who wants to travel as light and as simply as possible. I myself, and my friends who travel frequently, swear by these small, inexpensive adapters. Also, if you have a USB multiport charger you like or a charger that’s especially fast, you can use that charger with just a tiny, almost weightless plug at the end.

However, plug adapters aren’t for everyone, and that’s why they’re not our main pick. For one thing, if you don’t already own a multiport USB wall charger, you’ll still have to get one if you don’t want to carry a charger for each device. Also, depending on what you’re connecting with these plug adapters, your charger or device could wobble and maybe fall out. The connections inside are solid enough that this shouldn’t happen, but it’s possible. Our universal-adapter picks, as well as the other Ceptics set we discuss below, have a larger “face” for your charger to brace against—more like that of a traditional outlet—so there’s less chance of gravity having its way with your gear.

Being small and inexpensive, plug adapters are not built for high-power, high-wattage items, though hopefully we’ve persuaded you to leave those at home . If you’re charging a battery, you should be fine. If you’re running a motor, probably not. Laptops, yes; mini-fridges, no.

A charger plugged into our adapter pick

Last, these things being so small, you could easily lose them in your bag or leave them behind in an outlet somewhere, if you’re the type of person who loses things. (That’s why I usually keep mine connected to my charger.)

For a hardcore traveler like me, these are my pick. They’re cheap, light, and small, and they work.

A group of our runnerup plugs

Though made by the same company as the Ceptics International Worldwide Travel Plug Adapter 5 Piece Set—and bearing a confusingly similar name—the plug adapters in the Ceptics Adapter Plug Set for Worldwide International Travel Use are, as you can see, a completely different design. They’re much larger than the other Ceptics (let’s call the previous set Ceptics Black and this one Ceptics White for simplicity). Nonetheless, they’re each smaller than a universal adapter, and they have one key benefit over our top plug-adapter pick: You can purchase them in multipacks for individual regions, including regions beyond those covered by the Ceptics Black set.

The Ceptics White are small, but not as small as the Ceptics Black. That extra size does offer one benefit, however: These adapters have more of a face on the output side, so there’s more surface for your charger to lean against. This means your charger is less likely to fall out. Again, neither set of plugs we tested had loose connections, but this is always a risk, as chargers vary. One other difference: In place of the two-pronged US plug we saw (type A) in our other picks, this set includes the three-pronged grounded version .

best travel fan for europe

The real benefit to the Ceptics Whites, however, is not their physical characteristics. This range is one of your only options if you want to buy a plug adapter for a specific region or country. Headed to India or South Africa ? A universal adapter probably won’t work, but you can get a three-pack of Ceptics that will. You can also buy the offset three-prong and in-line three-prong for Switzerland and Italy, respectively, as well as plugs for Israel and Brazil , both the thin and the thick European plugs, and of course, Australia and UK versions too. They cost less than $10 per set. Any of those links will bring you to a page that lets you choose among plugs for different regions—definitely verify at checkout that you’ve picked the correct ones!

These adapters are ideal for someone headed to a country not covered by a universal adapter, or who has multiple chargers they want to plug in while traveling. They’re not quite as compact as the Ceptics Black adapters, but for most people, this difference in size won’t be an issue. I’ve traveled with these Ceptics plugs for many years, and they show no signs of wear.

Every adapter you see in this guide merely sends the current from the wall directly to whatever you plug into it. These are not voltage converters. Which is to say, if you’re in the UK, whatever you plug into the front of the adapter is going to get the UK’s 220 volts/50 hertz electricity, not the 120 volt/60 hertz that you’d get in the US. Travel plug adapters don’t convert the voltage; they only convert the plug . (Our universal picks do convert the local current to USB voltage, but only for the USB ports.)

However, for the vast majority of people, this is all you need. It’s exceptionally rare that anyone would need a voltage converter anymore. This is because most so-called wall warts, like on your phone charger or your camera’s battery charger, will convert the wall voltage into what it needs automatically.

Take a look at your charger. Somewhere, it should say “100–220V 50/60Hz.” This means it can accept anything between 100 V and 220 V, which covers domestic electricity pretty much everywhere, and either 50 Hz or 60 Hz, which again covers everything. If your charger doesn’t say this, it might not work with a travel adapter. If it only says "120V–60Hz," it will almost certainly not work—or not work correctly—with a travel adapter.

But here’s the other reason we don’t recommend buying a voltage converter: Your device might not work even with one. Anything with a motor (like hair dryers), anything with a heating element (like a clothing iron or a curling iron), or anything with a plug that goes directly to the device (as in no wall wart), probably won’t work in another country regardless of what kind of converter or adapter you bring . The good news is, pretty much every hotel, hostel, and Airbnb will have a hair dryer you can borrow. This is one of those times where we can’t cover everything you might want to bring, but for the vast majority of you, you don’t need a voltage converter. Either it’s not necessary, or the device that needs one won’t work anyway. Worst case, if it’s something cheap and you really need it—a hot pot or an electric kettle, say—consider buying one at your destination.

best travel fan for europe

One occasional exception is electric razors. These often fall into the “single cable, no wall wart, has a motor” category. Which is to say, they probably won’t work without a voltage converter. (Again, check the fine print near the plug or on the device itself.) Many hotels have a shaver plug in the bathroom , with a US-style outlet and US-style 110 volt-or-so voltage. However, not every hotel will have these, and they’re very rare in hostels and Airbnbs. If you need one, best to call ahead and see if your hotel has them. Or use disposables on your trip.

It’s worth noting again for clarity, USB is USB, so if you’re just plugging in a USB cable , unless something is horribly wrong, one USB port’s voltage is the same as any other USB port’s voltage. How fast that port will charge your gear will vary (that’s related to amperage), but unless the charger is faulty, a USB port shouldn’t damage your gear.

We considered many more adapters than those listed here. However, the majority of travel adapters available boil down to just a dozen or so designs sold by myriad companies. We’ve listed two representatives of each of the most common designs, but in most cases, many more exist. Chances are, if it looks similar and has similar specs, it’s probably the same inside.

Universal travel adapters

Askali, Unidapt , others: Only 3.4 amps maximum output, which means it’ll take longer to charge all of your devices.

Bluegogo  (currently unavailable): Only two USB and slower-charging than our picks.

Bonaker: Formerly our runner-up pick, this travel adapter had the usual mix of four plug types to cover you in most countries, but its four USB-A ports were slower than our top pick’s, and it had no USB-C port at all. It’s also since disappeared from Amazon.

Bonazza , Urbo , others: Feels flimsy, even compared with others here. Two-piece design is more cumbersome than helpful. Only 3.4 amps maximum output.

Ceptics Travel Power Strip : The Travel Power Strip combines the interchangeable-plug aspect of the Ceptics Plug Adapter Set with a two-outlet power strip and short extension cord. It also has USB-A and USB-C outputs. If you have multiple non-USB items you want to charge at once—a laptop and a camera charger, for instance—this is a good option. But we think most travelers will prefer the more portable brick design of our picks over this power strip.

Conair Travel Smart : It has only one USB port, with a maximum of 1 amp, but with three outlets, it’s one of the few travel adapters that lets you plug in multiple non-USB devices.

Monoprice Compact Cube Universal Travel Adapter : I own one of these, and it’s fine, but if you’re going the universal route, our picks have USB charging for just a few dollars more. If you don’t need USB charging, our plug-adapter picks are probably better choices. Insten is a similar product but with, apparently, surge suppression built in. But as there’s no way to change the fuse, this is likely one-and-done if you plug in something too powerful.

Mu One (currently unavailable): The Mu offered a much higher power output than other travel adapters: 45 watts, enough to quickly charge even a big-battery device such as a MacBook Air. However, after trying and failing to launch a Mu Two in 2020, the company went out of business. The name and remaining assets were bought by a company called Discovery Club, which seems to be selling off the inventory.

Ougrand (green) : Same shape as the Unidapt, but with a USB-C in place of one of the regular USB connections; 3.4 amp max total.

Huanuo  (currently unavailable): A bit bulky, with three regular USB ports and one USB-C; 3.4 amps maximum.

WGGE , Jollyfit : Only 2.4 amps max, less than either of our picks.

Plug adapters

Bestek Grounded Universal Worldwide Plug : Likely made in the same factory as the Ceptics White plugs, the Bestek set looks the same and is roughly the same price. It offers a wide variety of plug types, but lacks the Type C Europlug that’s common in most adapter sets and usable across most of Europe. (The Europlug was invented to fit into a wide range of European outlet types.) If our Ceptics White pick is sold out, these will also work.

Lewis N. Clark Adapter Plug Kit  (currently unavailable): This kit looks fine, but it is more expensive and has one less plug compared with our Ceptics pick.

Insignia Global Travel Adapter Kit  (currently unavailable): The Insignia has a clever interlocking and compact design, akin to that of the old Flight 001 universal adapter (Flight 001, the specialty travel-gear retailer, is now no longer operating in the US), and the individual plugs feel solid. However, it is expensive compared with our picks, and it doesn’t offer anything that you couldn’t do with our picks just by connecting them end to end (if you wanted to).

There are a lot of different types of camping fans you can get. Some are able to keep an 8-person tent cool, while others are really small and intended for a small tent or personal use. And there are also fans that double as lanterns, so that you need to carry around as little gear as possible! In this review, we will check out all the different types, and help you figure out which one is the right choice for you!

Top Product Overview

Top 10 camping fans for keeping your tent cool, coleman onesource multi-speed fan.

Coleman has produced a handy rechargeable camping fan here within their ever-popular OneSource range. OneSource means you can use the OneSource battery in the fan or in any other compatible Coleman products in this range.

This rechargeable fan can be changed via USB cable, or the OneSource battery can be replaced with another. The same USB port can also be used to charge your other gear while on a trip, which comes in very handy.

The fan has 2 speeds, both of which are ok, although some reviewers report the fan overall is not powerful enough. So, if you are using this for a large tent or a group, then it might disappoint.

There is also a tripod to stand it on, or you can change that for a hook to hang it from the top of your tent, saving you floor space.

Overall, a decent fan, with great features but certainly not the cheapest or most powerful.

Odoland Portable LED Camping Fan/Lantern

Odoland Portable LED Camping Lantern with Ceiling Fan - Hurricane Emergency

This is both a camping fan and a lantern.  For less than $15, which is great. It runs on two D batteries, and it features a hook that allows you to mount it in your tent’s ceiling. Additionally,  it is a pretty quiet fan, with most people describing the noise it makes as a light hum. But, since it is a battery-operated fan, don’t expect the breeze to be too strong, even on the high setting.

One really good thing about this fan/lamp is that you get  two separate hinges, which allow you to point the fan and light in different directions. That’s pretty useful – you might want to feel the breeze of the fan on your face, but I seriously doubt you also want the 18 pieces of LED light to shine in your eyes.

The manufacturer states that the hanging tent fan is able to run about 5 hours on the high setting. However, people who actually tested out the fan say that the run time is much longer than that. In fact, most of them had the fan working for about 20 hours on the high setting,  which is about 2.5-3 nights. Which is great – I always love a positive surprise.

The fan can run on both high and low-speed settings, while the LED light doesn’t have such options – you can just turn it on and off. If you want to conserve the battery life of the fan, remember to turn off the lights when you don’t need them, since they are really bright.

  • 2-in-1 camping fan and lantern
  • Super affordable price
  • Can be mounted to hang from ceiling
  • Breeze isn’t too strong even on high
  • Can’t adjust light brightness
  • Plastic frame is weak and flimsy
  • Size & Weight: 7.2” x 6.6” x 5.7” / 1.2 lbs (shipping weight)
  • Noise Level: Very quiet – a light hum
  • Run Time: 20 hours max on high setting (fan only!)

Geek Aire Rechargeable Outdoor High Velocity Fan

Geek Aire Rechargeable Outdoor Floor High Velocity Fan, Cordless, Max 1500 CFM High Performance Airflow, Up to 24 Hours Run Time, with USB Output for Recharging Digital Devices, 12 inch Metal Blade

The Geek Aire fan is a good choice for camping. It is  not exactly lightweight or too portable,  but it does have some redeeming qualities. For one, it  runs on a rechargeable Li-ion battery, which has a capacity of 15600mAh  – about 5 times that of an average smartphone.

It comes with an appropriate charger, and it only takes 4-5 hours to fully charge the battery. Plus it has an excellent airflow output – about 1500 CFM max.

Once you do that,  you can expect it to run 4-24 hours, depending on the setting.  Obviously, it can run longer on the low setting. And what’s really cool is that there is  an LED battery life indicator on the fan , which will tell you how much charge is left in it. I think that is really useful, because it helps you avoid any nasty surprises and it allows you to ration the battery life however you want.

This fan also features a USB charging port, which you can use to charge your phone or other electronic devices if you need to. That’s pretty cool – the fan can also function like a giant power bank. And you don’t have to worry about rain, since the fan is  IPX4 water resistant.

You can  tilt the fan 120 degrees the front or back, but you can’t tilt it sideways. Additionally, this is a floor fan, so you can’t really mount it to the tent ceiling. The fan also comes with an AC adapter and you can also use it indoors, without using up the battery. Overall, this is a pretty polarizing product –the downsides are hard to ignore, but the upsides really make it worth it.

  • Uses a rechargeable Li-ion battery
  • Acts as a power bank for your electronic devices
  • Pretty bulky and heavy
  • Can’t be mounted to the ceiling
  • Size & Weight: 16.7” x 14” x 7.1” / 6.9 lbs
  • Noise Level: Very quiet
  • Run Time: 4 hours on high, 24 hours on low

O2 Cool Electric Portable Fan

Treva 10-Inch Portable Fan, Powered by Battery and/or AC Adapter - Desk Fan Air Circulating with 2 Cooling Speeds, Personal Fan and Travel Fan for all your needs

If you are looking for a plain fan, then this one is a good choice. It is  battery operated, but it also comes with an AC adapter,  which allows you to plug it into a power outlet. This is pretty useful if you want to use it at home or at the office, but don’t want to consume the batteries. Especially because  you need 6 D-cell batteries to get this thing running.

Now, I think that’s a downside. Six batteries are a lot, in terms of both money and weight. But if you want something that you can use both indoors and outdoors, then you might be willing to compromise.

There are two speed settings for the fan – low and high. It can run for about  43 hours on low and 24 hours on high,  which isn’t really that impressive, considering how many batteries you need to get it working. And at least  it is a pretty quiet fan  – most people describe the noise level as  simple white noise,  which is pretty good.

Overall, I’d say that this is a pretty average camping fan. It is not too portable and it doesn’t perform exceptionally well, but it does have some redeeming qualities. A built-in carry handle, which makes it super convenient to carry around is one of those. And it is a  pretty slim fan, and not bulky  like some of the others in this review.

  • Comes with an AC adapter
  • Built-in carry handle
  • Can’t mount it on the ceiling
  • Requires 6 D-cell batteries
  • Not the most portable lamp
  • Size & Weight: 13” x 12” x 4” / 2.5 lbs
  • Noise Level: Quiet – white noise
  • Run Time: 43 hours on low, 24 hours on high

SmartDevil 5-Inch Small Desktop Fan

SmartDevil 6.5“ Small Desktop Fan, Personal Desk Fan With Storage Function, 2600mAh Battery Operated Table fan, Smart Timing Function, Stepless Speed Regulation, for Home, Office, Bedroom, Blue

This is another  indoor/outdoor fan . It can run on batteries, and you will actually get a rechargeable 2600 mAh battery with the fan . You can use a USB to charge these batteries while they are in the fan, but you can also use it to power the fan directly via USB too. Meaning that it will also work if you plug it into your computer or a power bank.

The  run time of this fan isn’t specified but reviewers state it runs for a long time .  And, if you bring several power banks on your camping trips, you will be able to have this run much longer.

You can rotate the fan vertically by 90 degrees, but you can’t rotate it sideways. However, it has a timing feature so you can leave it running for 1/2, 1 or 4 hours – to avoid overuse or draining the battery.

The fan is super easy to clean s ince the metal frame can be completely removed. Plus, it is pretty small and lightweight, so it is really portable and whisper-quiet . Overall, this is definitely one of the best fans for you, if you want something that you can use both indoors and outdoors.

  • Supports multiple power sources
  • Lightweight and small
  • Rechargeable batteries built-in
  • Stands on a table well
  • Size: 9.88 x 8.07 x 5.31 inches
  • Weight: 1.34 pounds
  • Run Time: Unknown

REENUO Camping Fan with LED Lights

REENUO Portable Camping Fan, Small Tent Fan with Hanging Hook, 40 Working Hours Rechargeable USB Battery Fan with LED Lights for Desk, Bedroom, Travel & Emergency Kit

The Reenuo is both a fan and a lantern, which you can mount to the ceiling of your tent. But unfortunately, you can’t separate the two – both the light and fan point in the same direction. But it does have a 360-degree adjustable lighting angle. It is one of the most portable camping fans we will check out in this review because it weighs less than a pound.

A downside of this fan is that it only has one button for all the different settings. So, you can press it three times – first is just the light, second is just the fan and third is both light and fan. That can get a little obnoxious – imagine trying to turn on just the fan in the middle of the night and getting blinded by the LED lights. Not really what you want.

Additionally, the run time of the fan is decent but not amazing. The light alone can work up to 140 hours, and if you turn both of them on, expect a run time of 4.5 hours, which is perhaps enough for one evening. Also, you can adjust the speed of the fan – with 3 settings for speed.

The good news is that the fan comes with a USB cable, and you can actually put rechargeable batteries in it. That would allow the fan to work when plugged in, as it would store power in those batters – but not in AA ones. That’s not too bad – you could always plug it into your travel laptop or a power bank, if the batteries run out of charge.

  • It will store power when plugged in with rechargeable batteries
  • Can be mounted to the ceiling
  • Fan and light both point in the same direction
  • Pretty short run time
  • Size & Weight:5.7 x 2.8 x 7.9 inches / 11.4 oz
  • Noise Level: Quiet – zero complaints
  • Run Time: 4.5 hours for fan & light, light alone a lot longer

Gazeled Portable Fan

Gazeled Battery Operated Fan, Super Long Lasting Battery Powered Fans for Camping, Portable D-Cell Desk Fan with Timer, 3 Speeds, Whisper Quiet, 180° Rotation, for Office,Bedroom,Outdoor, 5''

This is actually a really portable fan. It is small, slim and lightweight and it can fit into your favorite camping backpack without a hitch. It can run on a USB cable or rechargeable batteries – the latter actually gives you a pretty good run time of 214 hours max (on low setting).

The fan can’t be mounted to the tent ceiling, but it is slim enough not to get in your way in most cases. Or you can get creative and sew some magnets in your tent – it just might work. It is really lightweight and portable, which makes it one of your top choices for camping, especially if you tend to carry a lot of gear with you.

One thing I really like about this fan is that it has a timer – you can set it to 1, 2, or 5 hours, and it will turn off automatically after that time. This is really useful if you want to leave it on when you go to sleep, but don’t want the battery to drain overnight.

Overall, if you are looking for an affordable and simple fan, I really think this is your top choice. You can rotate it vertically up to 90 degrees, which is okay. It’s not extremely adjustable, but it’s better than nothing. Plus, this is one of the few fans that also includes a medium setting for the fan speed, and that’s really useful.

  • Choose from low, medium and high settings
  • Runs on rechargeable batteries or via USB
  • Timer that turns it off automatically
  • No carry handles
  • Vertical rotation angle is only 90 degrees
  • Size & Weight: 10.2 x 7.6 x 3.4 inches / 1.15 lbs
  • Noise Level: Extremely quiet
  • Run Time: 214 hours on low, 46 hours on medium, & 14 hours on high speed

SmartDevil Min Handheld Fan

SmartDevil Mini Handheld Fan, Dual-Bladed Handheld Fan, Small Personal Portable Fan with 4000mAh Rechargeable Battery Operated, Powerful Wind,3 Speed Adjustable,Lanyard Fan For Outdoor & Home (Grey)

Now, this fan is pretty different from the ones we checked out so far. But, if you are looking for something that is  ultra-portable, and that you can prop up in the cup holder of your chair,  then you will love this one. It is obviously  small, lightweight and can keep just one person cool . But if you take a few of these and combine their powers, you will be able to keep the entire tent cool.

The handheld fan  has it’s own rechargeable batteries . You can get 3-9 hours of use from just one battery, which is pretty good considering the size of the fan.

The metal clip allows you to use the fan in many different ways. You can hold it in your hand, place it in the cup holder of a camping chair , or you can use it to prop up the fan on a camping table . Plus, you can rotate it up to 180 degrees vertically, so there really are a lot of adjustment options.

This obviously isn’t the strongest fan, or the best one for a really large tent. But it is the most portable one, and the  best choice if you want something just for yourself . It is the fan that you can also carry around town, when the summer heats start getting unbearable.

  • Exceptionally portable – fits in a larger pocket
  • Not suitable for a group of people
  • You can’t hang it
  • Size & Weight: 3.9” x 1” x 7.8” / 6.7 oz
  • Noise Level: Extremely quiet – light hum
  • Run Time: Up to 2.5 hours on high, 11 hours on low

O2COOL Portable Camping Fan

Treva 10-Inch Portable Desktop Air Circulation Battery Fan, 2 Speed, Compact Folding & Tilt Design Fan With Adjustable LED Lights

This is  not the most portable camping  fan you can buy. But it is the one with the most impressive run time – it’s able to work up to 53 hours on the low setting.  If that’s what you are prioritizing, then this is just the right camping fan for you. Plus,  it also doubles as a lantern, since it features two LED lights with three brightness settings on the sides.

It is not exactly small or lightweight, but it is pretty slim. And it has a base that helps it stand upright even on uneven surfaces. It also features a  built-in carry handle,  which makes it pretty easy to transport.

This fan supports  two different power supplies – 6 D-cell batteries and an AC adapter .  The  adapter is not included in the purchase,  which is a shame. And the batteries will significantly increase the weight of the fan, not to mention that they are not really that cheap to get.

But if you want power and longevity, then you will need to make some compromises. This fan is able to keep a large tent cool while running for days on end. So, if you tend to go on some long camping trips with a bunch of friends, this is the right fan for you.

  • Power-efficient
  • Great for large tents
  • Supports multiple power supplies
  • AC adapter not included in the purchase
  • Needs 6 D-cell batteries to work
  • Not really lightweight, especially with batteries
  • Size & Weight: 11” x 12.6” x 12.8” / 2.38 lbs
  • Noise Level: Pretty quiet
  • Run Time: 53 hours on low, 20 hours on high

Best Camping Fans We Found

Out of all the camping fans featured in this review, there were 3 that really stood out to me. So, let me tell you which ones they are.

If you want a fan that is also a lantern, then the Image Portable Fan is definitely the top option for you. It is small and lightweight, and it is super affordable. It is also the only fan/lantern that actually has separate hinges for these two functions, allowing you to point the light and the breeze in different directions.

You can mount it to the tent ceiling, and it can run up to 20 hours on high if you only use the fan. Definitely one of the best products in this entire review.

  • Camping Essentials: Portable fan combines tent fan and camping light. Lantern useful for lights up your tent. Fan circulate air enables to cool down instantly.
  • Versatile light/fan: Ultra Bright 18 individual low powered LED bulbs. The fan has high and low settings to provide nice air circulation and lit up the tent. You can orient in so many positions.

For those of you who are looking just for a fan that can keep a really big tent cool, I recommend the Geek Aire Portable Fan .It has a huge battery and a run time of about 24 hours on the low setting.

Plus, it is also waterproof, which makes it a great outdoor fan. And since it supports multiple power supplies, you can power it up with a laptop or a power bank. Or you could also use it as a power bank to charge up your phone, in case of an emergency.

  • 4-24 Hour Run Time Varies By Setting

And if all you want is a small, portable fan just for you, then the SmartDevil Mini Fan is the right choice for you. You can mount it in the cup holder of your chair and just enjoy the cooling breeze. Or you could bend its base and set it up on a table – anyway, you have plenty of different options to adjust this fan.

It runs on just one battery, and it has a pretty run time of about 11 hours. This is by far the best fan that can pretty much fit into your pocket.

  • 【Double Blade & Double Motor】: New spiral double-layer fan blade & double motor design, double wind is more concentrated, can evenly and densely cut airflow, promote air circulation, strengthen air convection speed, thus achieve strong wind force, let you Feel the ultimate coolness.
  • 【Portable Silicone Lanyard】: This double-leaf fan is not only mini-sized, but also equipped with a silicone lanyard, making it easier to carry and store. It can be hand-held, can be put into a backpack, and can also be placed hanging. Hanging the lanyard on your wrist when holding the fan can also prevent the fan from slipping out of your hand or being accidentally lost. Convenient to carry, suitable for home, fitness, travel and other indoor and outdoor scenes.

And those are my top picks. But generally,  any one of these 10 camping fans will do a great job . They all have the best ratings and are the most popular fans in this category. Head over to Amazon to check out their prices and more photos!

Solar Camping Fans

There are actually very few solar camping fans on the market, and those that I have found are not well-rated or readily available. So, what do I recommend in such a case? Use one of the above rechargeable camping fans and connect a portable solar panel to it instead.

This is not only s smart solution but also has lots of uses while you are camping. You can charge your phone, iPad, Kindle, or other gear as well. You can even take it on a road trip or anywhere else you go hiking or away from a power supply.

REI has lots of great portable solar panels , but of course, there are many others on Amazon

What Makes A Good Camping Fan?

How portable is your fan.

A portable camping fan should be small and lightweight. Obviously. But, the size of the fan directly impacts its power as well. So,  i f you are looking for a really powerful camping fan, you shouldn’t expect to be light as a feather. And if you’re not sure what exactly you want, you need to make up your mind right now –  portability or power?

If you usually carry a lot of other gear with you, go for portability. But if you tend to go on longer camping trips, or go camping with a lot of other people, go with power– after all, you can always make someone else carry the fan when it gets too heavy for you.

However, the  weight doesn’t impact just the portability, it also impacts its performance.  Think about it – you might want to hang the fan off your tent’s ceiling. If you get a ridiculously heavy fan, it might not stay mounted to the tent at all times. Gravity could do its job, and if that heavy fan hits you or one of your friends in the process, you will literally feel the weight of that bad decision.

So, be sure to  check out the weight of the fan in the product section,  and see if you are comfortable with it.  Some fans can’t be mounted to the tenet ceiling, and it’s okay for those fans to be slightly heavier  – if you don’t mind carrying them around.

How Long Do You Need It To Run?

There are a bunch of different types of fans out there. You can get ones that  run on batteries or ones that you can just plug into to a power bank. And there is also plenty of fans that support multiple power supplies.

Generally, the run time of a fan depends on several different factors. The power of the fan, the amount of batteries that it uses, the type of batteries that you put in it, whether or not you can switch it to USB, and just the overall quality of the fan. With all of that in mind, it’s no surprise that the run-time ranges from 2 hours to 50 hours.

You want to look at the fans that are a good fit for your camping habits. Check out the  run times of each fan, which will be listed either in the product description sections , along with other important factors. And if a camping fan has a particularly long or short run-time, I will note that in the pros/cons section as well. So, definitely check out all those boxes below the reviews!

And also keep in mind that  the run time of battery-operated fans significantly depends on the type of batteries you put in them  – like with your Xbox controller.  If you go for really cheap ones, don’t expect an outstanding performance from your camping fan . I strongly suggest  Duracells , as t hey are top of the line.

It Needs To Be Quiet

To be perfectly honest, this hadn’t even occurred to me when I bought my first camping fan. And boy did I regret that! Because there is nothing worse than not being able to carry out a conversation with your friends because you can barely hear them over the noise of that stupid fan.

The noise level of an average conversation is about 60 decibel s.  I consider all fans louder than that to be extremely loud – could you fall asleep if there were people shouting next to you in the tent?

Now,  not all manufacturers always list the exact noise levels of their fans.  They tend to claim that it is only white noise, or extremely quiet, but we all know that you can’t really trust just the product descriptions if you want the whole truth. But you can compare what the manufacturer is saying to what the people who actually own the fan are saying, and see whether or not they were telling the truth.

So, I will do my best to show you fans that are quiet enough so that they don’t interfere with the camping dynamics you are used to. However, if a certain fan has some really cool features that kind of makeup for it being too loud, I will feature it. Anyway, you should look for information about the noise levels in the product info section, as well as the pros/cons.

With all of that in mind, I think you should now have a good idea of what you are looking for in your perfect camping fan. So, here are your ten best options!

Do I need a fan for camping?

It is a good idea to have a fan for camping when temperatures rise to 75-80F (25-30C). On such days, tents can be even hotter than houses and with no breeze, they can get very uncomfortable.
