How to Get to Versailles from Paris

How much time you need for a versailles tour of both gardens and palace, can you skip the line by buying your tickets in advance, the versailles map will show you the way, the tour of the versailles gardens in photos.

If you want to spend 5 days in Paris , save one for Versailles. You’ll be glad you’ve done it.

I went from Paris to Versailles with the intention to visit the entire palace. I changed my mind when I saw the incredible queue in front of the golden gates. There must have been a few thousands of people waiting in line, the snake-shaped queue filling almost the whole available space.

As I got closer, I noticed those people already had bought their tickets, and were waiting to enter the castle.

I recommend you get your skip the line Versailles tickets in advance.

For a split second, I though I’d go back to Paris after the one hour train ride I took from Gare Saint Lazare to Versailles. Luckily, I saw a map of Versailles palace and gardens, and I spotted the entrance to the gardens. There were very few people waiting to get tickets. The day was saved. The magnificent gardens were welcoming and huge, making the crowds less intrusive.

I experienced three seasons in one day. For a while, there was the autumn-like rain that ruined most of my photos of the lovely Versailles gardens. Suddenly, the sun appeared, allowing me to capture some cool scenes. At times, it was so hot that I started to seek for the shadow of the green maze made from very tall bushes and wooden fences.

If you want to skip the line (a part of it, anyway), buy your Versailles admission ticket online here today, [todaysdate].

During the high season (July, August) you can save up to two hours by buying your tickets online. This should buy you enough time for some of the other best things to do in Versailles . Just check them out to see which ones to add to your bucket list.

Paris Versailles is a trip you can take by train, by bus or by car. The train is fairly inexpensive, and you have multiple options to catch one. You should be looking for RER C.

As far as I know, Ouigo trains don’t stop in Versailles.

You’ll see train lines are very well connected to the metro network, so it doesn’t matter much where in Paris your accommodation is, as you’ll have good access from everywhere in the city.

In Versailles, the train station is within walking distance from the palace. If you prefer to rent a car, you’ll be able to park nearby the castle.

If you don’t want to bother with driving or trying to find your way around Paris and its 14 metro lines and 5 RER lines, you can book an organized tour to Versailles.

The bus will pick you up from your hotel or from a previously agreed meeting point, and you won’t have to worry about anything else than getting your camera ready for the countless photo opportunities.

The distance from Paris to Versailles is about 16 miles. As this isn’t exactly my average walking distance, I’ve taken the metro to the RER C train, line 5, going to Versailles-Rive Gauche Station. Traveling by train is an excellent opportunity to spot some more things to see in Paris.

This is how I’ve discovered La Defense (which I visited on my way back to Paris from Versailles), and Montparnasse Tower (which offers an amazing panorama of Paris).

Anyway, the thing you have to know is that the round trip Paris Versailles by train takes two hours. The palace of Versailles tour takes about two or three hours, and you should schedule at least one hour for the gardens. As for the line, I have no idea how much time you should plan, but I’d say between one and two hours.

If you visit Versailles on a weekend day between April and October, you’ll have the chance to enjoy the Musical Fountains and Gardens Shows, so you may want to roam around for longer. I’ve been here in April, so I’ve seen the fountains working. Should you be willing to get there this year, make sure you check the Versailles fountains schedule for 2018 before planning your trip.

versailles golden gates

The fence and the gates of Versailles Palace are visible from a distance. Don’t they look cool on that cloudy background?

paris versailles gardens

The Versailles Gardens offer an impressive scenery. Those bushes make excellent leading lines for photos, and the marble statues contrast with the green background in a nice way.

As this was among the longest lines I’ve ever seen in Paris or in any other tourist spot for that matter, the first question that came to mind was whether buying your tickets online would save you from doing the queue. If you are keen on visiting both the castle and the gardens, purchase your tickets in advance, as that’s going to save you some time.

The truth is that you’ll skip only the line for purchasing tickets, which is way smaller than the one you need to do to enter the castle. I didn’t count, but I think there were many hundreds of people with their tickets already in their hand, waiting for their turn to get inside the “chateau.”

That’s when I was certain we were going to head back to the train station and to Paris, without having seen anything but the golden gates and the crowds. As far as I was concerned, my Versailles tour ended before it even started. I was sure I was going to read about the history of Versailles , and call it a day.

After all, we all know what happened to Louis IV, and what kind of luxury they lived in. I’ve seen enough night pots made from fine porcelain in various palaces such as Schonnbrun in Vienna, Austria, and Achilleon, in Corfu, Greece .

versailles palace queue

All these people are waiting in line to enter the palace. It’s rather depressing to see them as you come from the train station. Once you realize they aren’t there just to take photos, you start thinking about catching the next train back to Paris.

Paris Versailles with storm clouds above

The rain and the dark clouds above Versailles didn’t deter the crowds. Smart travelers always carry an umbrella with them, just in case.

When you only have three days in Paris, and you waste one like that, you feel angry and sad.

Why did I choose Versailles for a one day trip, rather than Fontainebleau, Chateau de Vincennes, or Giverny?

Add one full hour of researching how to get to Versailles from Paris, and you have a recipe for disaster. Anyway, I prefer slow travel, so I try to spend more than two or three days everywhere I go. Paris was the exception, as I could only afford three days or not go at all.

As I still couldn’t believe I had come to Versailes for nothing, I was hanging around, hoping to find a solution to visit the exterior of the estate without having to spend two hours of my life doing the queue. Apparently, there was only one entrance, the one where you needed to pass the security check. Then I spotted a map of the gardens, and I decided to take a closer look, just to see what I was going to miss.

If you find this map, look carefully. Next to it, there is an arrow pointing to the Gardens. Follow that direction and you’ll get to a small entrance, where you pay the 9 euro entry ticket and they let you in. There are barely any people here, so you’ll get through the gates in as little as five minutes. You won’t visit the interior of the palace, but the gardens are well-worth the Paris Versailles trip.

Chateau de Versailles Neptune Statue

I’m happy to be on the other side of the golden gates, with the statue of Neptune and the Versailles palace behind me.

The gardens are huge but very well organized. You’ll find your way around with ease, as every section is carefully labeled. At the entrance, they give you a map. This will help you find out where you are at any given time, and who are “the guys and the girls” in the middle of the water fountains. You’ll find out who was the architect of the Southern Groves and the Northern Groves of Versailles, as well as many other details about the history of the gardens.

As a matter of fact, the layout of the gardens is the work of Andre Le Notre, famous French landscape architect, and way more than a simple gardener. Le Notre had a great vision, and he did everything in his power to bring it to life.

The 5 Best Versailles Tours From Paris [2024 Reviews]

Make the most of your time in france with a guided tour of versailles.

Photo of Richard Moore

It’s hard to imagine the Palace of Versailles having such humble roots as first being a hunting lodge. It was not long after this that the palace became the seat of power for this region of France. Starting in the 18 th century, the Palace of Versailles was turned into a museum. It is the museum that many visitors to Paris enjoy every year.

However, many Versailles tours provide you with skip-the-line tickets so you’re able to spend your time in the palace and not waiting in line. A day trip to Versailles from Paris through a tour company can also provide you with a more thorough outing.

After all, while many visitors tour public areas in the palace as well as the gardens, the right tour can allow you access to the Royal Quarters or even experience the palace and gardens privately.

Be sure to see our list of the top 10 things to do in Paris for some more ideas!

Your Guide to Visiting Paris

While visiting the City of Lights may not be just as you expect after watching An American in Paris, a vacation in Paris is like nothing else. With so many tourist spots to explore, you may find it difficult to plan everything you’d like to see and experience into just one vacation. I guess that just means you’ll have to come back to see this beautiful city again.

versailles day tours from paris - guide

Our travel guide below can help you plan a vacation to Paris whether you are staying for 2 days or 10 and whether it’s your first visit or fifth.

Airports & Entry

Planning tips, restaurants & eating out, nightlife & entertainment, getting around, accommodations, attractions.

When headed to France, you won’t need to apply for a visa so long as your expected stay is less than 90 days. You also need to have at least three months before your passport expires past the date you expect to leave the country. An emergency passport will not be accepted unless you also have an approved visa, no matter the length of your stay. There should be at least one page available for a stamp when you arrive.

  • Paris Beauvais Airport
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport
  • Paris Orly Airport

Paris is unlike most other vacation destinations. The French, especially Parisians, live life a little differently. This means that while you’re there, you may have to get used to eating at different times and you may need to plan your attire.

On your first day, taking a guided tour of the city will help you zero in on areas you would like to spend more time in will help a lot.

These are our top 5 tips for visiting Paris. Have you been there and have tips of your own? Let us know!

Tip #1: Stay in a Central Location

Everywhere you’re going to want to go as a tourist in Paris will be centrally located or have provided travel that leaves this area. Most of the hotels, many museums, and a lot of restaurants are all centrally located. You’ll also find that the pickup and drop-off locations for many tours are located here. It makes things much easier if you find accommodations close to central Paris.

Tip #2: Always Have Euros on Hand

There are many stores and even restaurants that don’t accept debit or credit cards. Some taxis won’t accept plastic either. If an establishment does accept a card, they often won’t allow you to leave a tip on your receipt. This means it’s important to always have a few euros on hand. Many ATMs in the city will allow you to use a foreign card to withdrawal euros.

Tip #3: Have Snacks on You

Parisians often eat their dinner very late. While you may be used to a dinner time of between 4 and 6 pm, it’s not uncommon for those in Paris to eat as late as 9 or 10. You’ll want to keep this in mind when making reservations, but you should always have a small snack with you just in case you get hungry and it’s still a few hours to dinner.

Tip #4: Avoid Traveling to Paris in August

Most Parisians are used to taking off the entire month of August. This means that while you will most likely be able to find accommodations, many restaurants and attractions will not be open. If you’re traveling to Paris in August , this can be a very quiet time to visit the city. However, if you’re looking forward to seeing the sights, it’s best not to travel to Paris in August.

Tip #5: Dress Appropriately

While those in Paris can still be found wearing sneakers, most dress in a business casual or a simple but chic style. Most attractions and restaurants will frown on those wearing beat up shoes, blue jeans, and other very casual clothes. Some places will even require a more elegant or fancy appearance, such as certain high-end restaurants.

Bringing a set of casual clothes might not be a bad idea but be sure to bring enough clothes you can wear while out and about. If you don’t have much in the way of the chic style that Paris requires, at least you’re in the perfect place to go shopping to stock up on some.

The Ciel de Paris is one of the most romantic restaurants in the city. It is located in the Montparnasse Tower with beautiful views of the city. You’ll also find a well-stocked champagne bar available to you. The Polidor is one of the oldest restaurants in Paris. It dates back to 1895 and the interior decor hasn’t changed much since. This is one of those restaurants that only take cash, so have a few euros on you.

France is well known for it’s fine wines. If you are a wine connoisseur be sure to take a wine tasting tour around Paris . In Paris, it’s hard to find a truly casual restaurant. Because of this, you’ll want to make sure that you’re dressed for the occasion. If you’re not sure what you could or should wear to a particular establishment, some will list their dress code online or you can always give them a call.

You should consider taking a French cooking class while you are in Paris . Learn from the best and make the dishes you love at home!

Harry’s New York Bar was actually once located in New York City. The entire bar, just as it was, was moved over to Paris in the early 1900s. This bar is credited with inventing some of the most popular cocktails we know today, including the Bloody Mary and the Sidecar.

Wine and champagne are something most Parisians are very proud of. If you’re looking for an upscale wine bar, you’ll want to try out Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels. You’ll be able to try nearly every wine and champagne local to Paris. However, there are wine bars located in nearly every corner of the city.

If you are really a lover of champagne you should take a day trip to the champagne region for tastings and seeing the castles this area is known for.

From backroom speakeasies to modern nightclubs, Paris has a little bit of everything for everybody when it comes to nighttime entertainment.

There’s no shortage of ways to get around in Paris. The most popular, effective, and affordable way is the Metro. You may find it a bit intimidating at first due to the sheer number of lines and routes, but after a few trips to an attraction or restaurant, you’ll be riding the Metro like a pro. You can purchase single ride tickets or a batch of 10. If you’re going to be in Paris longer there are also ride passes.

While traditional taxis can be quite expensive in the city, Uber offers some fairly inexpensive ways to get around town if traveling by car is best. Walking between destinations is very doable in Paris but if you’d like to ride a bike instead, there’s plenty of kiosks that rent them. In fact, this can be a great way to tour the city and do some sightseeing on your own.

You’ll find everything from small and inexpensive hostels too large, luxury resorts in Paris. There are even small boutique hotels with spas and other amenities. Where you decide to stay while visiting Paris will largely depend on the type of experience you’re looking for.

If you wish to spoil yourselves, the Le Roch Hotel & Spa is perfectly located between restaurants, the Louvre Museum, and many tourist pick up spots. If you’re looking to meet other tourists, learn more about the city from those who’ve been here several times, and have a quieter stay, one of the many hostels around town are ideal. We recommend The Generator Hostel Paris.

On average, July is the warmest month in Paris. While the weather is much better during the summer months, there are usually more crowds. If you don’t want to have to fight the crowds and don’t mind cooler weather, traveling in late winter or early spring might just give you the blend of comfortable weather and fewer crowds. January is the coldest month, on average, with temperatures in the low 40s Fahrenheit.

Paris is full of attractions. The Louvre Museum is a popular stop for tourists. The Mona Lisa exhibit here can be quite busy, however. Use your limited time at this world-famous museum by taking in the many other exhibits, many of which are quite interesting and just as important to French history.

If you like to visit museums, you might want to try the Musee d’Histoire de la Medecine. You might just learn more about how modern medicine came to be. The Museum of Modern Art is a popular stop as well.

Visiting the Palace of Versailles, exploring the Paris catacombs , taking a river cruise down the Seine River , and making it to the top of the Eiffel Tower usually top most tourist’s lists of attractions. Remember that traveling to or visiting these places can be much easier if you go as a group on a tour.

You may get priority access, free souvenir photos, and more, just for traveling with a tour group. This is often the most affordable way and makes it easier to plan the days you’re planning to spend in Paris.

Disneyland Paris

Also outside the city, despite its name, is Disneyland Paris, 20 miles to the east. This famous theme park is the most visited attraction in France. If you’re visiting Paris with children, you’ll probably want to devote two days to Disney because there are two separate parks here: Disneyland Park opened in 1992 and Walt Disney Studios Park opened in 2002.

Inside both, you’ll find thrill rides for all ages as well as classic attractions, like actors dressed up as your favorite Disney characters and Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. The easiest way to get to Disney Paris is with a shuttle and entrance ticket deal .

Table of Contents

Wondering which half-day Versailles Tour from Paris to take and whether it will work into your vacation schedule?

Well, I’ve done several tours of Versailles now, so I’ve created a list of the ones I enjoyed the most to help you choose.

I’m lucky enough to live in France, and Paris is just a two-hour train ride away. I love meeting friends and family here and playing tour guide. And a tour of Versailles is nearly always one we do.

My Top Pick for a Half-Day Versailles Tour from Paris

Visitors explore the opulent Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles, with its gilded sculptures, crystal chandeliers, and ornate ceiling frescoes reflected in the mirrored walls.

Half-Day Private Guided Tour Of The Versailles Palace With Skip-The-Line Access

✅ Skip-the-line access saves time and hassle

✅ Personalised tour with an experienced guide

✅ Over 190 five-star reviews ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A tour of the Palace of Versailles is on most people’s vacation lists when visiting Paris, meaning it can get very crowded.

And one of the best ways to avoid the crowds, and to get access to some of the rooms a general admission ticket doesn’t get you, is to book a tour.

Unfortunately, not all tours are created equal, and it comes down to knowing what you want to do and how much time you want to spend.

5 Half-Day Versailles Tour from Paris

No 1 – half day private guided tour of the versailles palace with skip the line access.

This half-day private tour allows you to explore Versailles with the expertise of an art historian as your guide.

WHY YOU’LL WANT TO BOOK THIS TOUR

As good as the audio guides are, nothing beats doing a tour with a guide who is passionate about Versailles and knows stories that take you beyond the guidebook.

What’s Included? Your tour starts at the State Apartments of Louis XIV , where you’ll get an intimate glimpse into the life of the Sun King. From there, you’ll explore the other royal apartments, as well as the breathtaking Hall of Mirrors .

Your guide, a well-versed art historian, will unveil the layers of history and artistry that line this grand corridor.

But it’s not all about the Palace as your tour will take you outside to the Gardens of Versailles . Here, you’ll have time to roam among the spectacular fountains and the statues , taking in the splendour of the gardens.

And the best part is you don’t need to worry about getting there and back. Round-trip transportation from your Paris accommodation is covered . And trust me, I had issues with cancelled RER trains on one of my trips, so it was great not to worry about that with the hotel pick-up included.

What I loved about this tour:

  • Skip-the-line access saves time and hassle.
  • Personalised attention and detailed insights from an art historian guide.
  • Convenient round-trip transportation from Paris.

After your garden exploration, it’s time to go into the Palace itself. The Galerie des Glaces, with its 357 mirrors , is a highlight, reflecting centuries of history and grandeur. But there’s more, the 18th-century Royal Chapel captivates with its vibrant ceiling paintings and historic organ.

No 4 – Versailles Palace Entrance Ticket and Breakfast at Restaurant ORE

Two individuals stand before the grand façade of the Palace of Versailles, with its distinctive yellow doors, marble statues, and ornate golden decorations, set against the iconic black and white checkered courtyard.

Your Versailles experience begins with a luxurious breakfast at Ore, an Alain Ducasse restaurant located within the Palace.

⭐️ RATING: 4 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH:  6 Hours | ✅ Check Rates & Availability!

This is the tour I have done most recently with my daughter, and starting the day with breakfast in the palace itself was a great way to begin our tour.

One thing to note is that this is a self-guided tour, so there is no guide to take you around. It’s perfect for those who prefer to discover at their own pace with the help of an audio guide for each room.

You do still have skip-the-line tickets which are given to you in the restaurant once you’ve finished your breakfast. You’re then taken down the back stairs and straight into the security area, where there is airport-style security to go through.

It did feel as though you were a bit of a celebrity being taken through this way, which definitely added a bit of fun.

You also have access to the gardens, which we didn’t do on this trip as it was winter and too cold to wander around.

  • A fun start to the tour with a luxurious breakfast at Ore by Alain Ducasse.
  • Skip-the-line entrance saves time and enhances the experience.
  • Freedom to explore the palace independently
Walking at our own pace thru the castle was a great experience. Viewing the incredible artwork on the ceilings… it’s just not done anymore, was awe-inspiring. Beautiful tour. Breakfast was AMAZING, and filling. Loved all of it. ASHLEIGH (read more reviews )

FAQS: Booking a Guided Tour of Versailles

Can you do versailles in half a day.

Visiting Versailles in half a day is possible, but it’s a tight schedule. You’ll be able to see the main highlights like the Palace, the Hall of Mirrors, and the gardens. However, exploring the entire estate, including the Trianon Palaces and Marie-Antoinette’s Estate , would be challenging in this timeframe.

Is 2 hours enough for Versailles?

Two hours at Versailles allows for a brief visit. You can tour the main palace, including the main areas like the King’s and Queen’s State Apartments and the Hall of Mirrors. However, two hours isn’t really enough to fully experience the gardens or other parts of the estate.

Can you bring a water bottle into the Palace of Versailles?

Yes, you can bring a water bottle into the Palace of Versailles. It’s advisable to carry a reusable bottle as there are several water fountains on the grounds where you can refill it. However, drinking and eating inside the palace rooms are not allowed.

Can I bring a backpack into Versailles?

Backpacks are allowed in Versailles, but there are size restrictions. Large backpacks may need to be checked into the cloakroom. For a smoother visit, it’s recommended to bring a smaller bag to avoid long waits at the security check and cloakroom.

My Top Pick for a Half-Day Tour of Versailles!

  • Personalised insights from your guide
  • Round-trip transportation from Paris.

Final Thoughts: Taking a half-day Versailles tour from Paris

As you can see, I’ve been to Versailles five times , and I still feel like I haven’t seen everything there is to see. I still want to see Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet and Petit Trianon.

I highly recommend taking half-day tours as there is so much to see and do that it can be overwhelming trying to squeeze it into one day.

Plus, with a tour guide, you get to ask questions such as, “Did Marie Antoinette really say, Let Them Eat Cake? ”.

If you can, make enough time to see the gardens, orangery and the Petit Trianon.

Just remember, if you’re making your own way and using the Metro and RER train , make sure to leave yourself plenty of time. Trains get cancelled regularly, and you don’t want to miss the time you have.

1. Best Time to Visit Versailles

The best time to visit Versailles is in spring or autumn because the site is less crowded than in summer. The garden shows usually take place between April and October, and they are also lovely in the shoulder seasons. During this time, the French-style gardens that surround the Château are not free to visit, but there is Baroque music, and the fountains are running, so it is well worth the extra fee.

Winter is ideal for visiting the Château, but you will miss the beauty of the gardens in bloom, which is a shame. The French-style gardens are free to visit in winter, but many grooves are closed to the public. A day of snow can be nice, but it is rare!

Best Day to Visit Versailles

With your Versailles skip-the-line tickets, you will avoid the longest lines. Also, you may want to avoid the biggest crowds when you visit the Château of Versailles inside.

Versailles is particularly crowded on Tuesdays and during the weekends. If your schedule is flexible, prioritize Wednesdays and Thursdays for visiting Versailles, when there are fewer crowds. In our opinion, Wednesdays and Thursdays are the best days to visit Versailles .

The Château of Versailles is one of the top sights to visit near Paris. We recommend a day trip to Versailles from Paris in the following Paris itineraries:

  • 4 days in Paris itinerary
  • 5 days in Paris itinerary
  • 6 days in Paris itinerary
  • 7 days in Paris itinerary

4. Why a Versailles Tour from Paris is a Good Idea

A Versailles tour from Paris is a popular option, especially among first-time visitors. Here’s why you should consider a guided tour for visiting Versailles:

» Your time is limited, and Versailles Estate is huge! Tour guides know how to get the most out of your time on a day trip from Paris to Versailles by showing the main sights at perfect times to avoid crowds.

» Guided tours with a knowledgeable guide are more interesting and interactive experiences. You can always ask your guide as many questions as you want, and they always seem to have many stories to tell.

» Versailles guided tours use a separate entrance to the Château, which is super cool. While Versailles skip-the-line tickets guarantee access to the Château within 30 minutes (the 30 minutes of your time slot), the access to the Château with a guided tour is immediate thanks to this separate entrance.

» Some of these tours also include the pickup and drop off at your hotel. After visiting Versailles for hours, how cool is it to go back straight to your hotel on a comfortable van or coach?

» Some Versailles guided tours allow people to visit otherwise closed rooms. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy these unique parts of the Château with a small group and far from the crowds.

5. things to do on a versailles day trip from paris.

The Versailles Estate is vast, and there are many interesting things to visit. Here’s the list.

TIP: check out our suggested Versailles itinerary, self-guided.

Château de Versailles

Versailles Palace France

Château de Versailles is the beating heart of the Versailles Estate. One of the most beautiful castles in France , the Palace of Versailles has two floors – the garden floor and the first floor – with a total surface of 63,000 m2 divided into 2,300 rooms and halls.

The most famous room in the Château is the Hall of Mirrors, used for ceremonies and exceptional occasions such as the masked ball for Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI ‘s wedding. But of course, there’s much more!

Don’t miss one of the best castles near Paris . The articles below are in-depth articles about the Palace of Versailles and our best skip-the-line tips for visiting it.

Versailles - Hall of Mirrors

Gardens of Versailles

Versailles French Gardens

Designed by André Le Notre , the same landscaper designer who created the gardens of Château de Chantilly , the magnificent French-style Gardens of Versailles is one of the jewels of the Versailles Estate.

The Gardens of Versailles surround the Château on three sides, and they are decorated with many fountains, grooves, statues, colonnades, and even an obelisk. From April to October, they host beautiful music and water shows, and there’s an entrance fee to access them. The access is free from November to March, but some grooves are closed.

If you want to know more about these stunning gardens, the articles below are in-depth articles about the Gardens of Versailles and the fountains that decorate these gardens.

Visit Versailles Gardens

The Estate of Trianon

Queen's Hamlet - Versailles

The Estate of Trianon  is home to the Grand Trianon and the Petit Trianon pavilions, the Queen’s Hamlet , and various ornamental gardens.

The Kings built these intimate spaces close to the Palace of Versailles to gain some brief respite from courtly etiquette and enjoy nature. The Queen’s Hamlet was constructed for Queen Marie-Antoinette and her children to play the peasants, and it had a farm, a mill, and many animals.

Versailles - Lime Tree Walk

The Park of Versailles is the green extension surrounding the Grand Canal, and it is always free to visit. This part is very popular amongst locals and Parisians for family picnics, jogging, or bike rides.

The Grand Canal is André Le Nôtre’s most original design. With its huge dimensions (1,700 m east-west and 1000 m north-south) and 60 m in width, the Grand Canal was used for ship battles by the King and his court.

If you are fit, walk down to the Royal Star , a viewpoint at the edge of the western branch with amazing views.

This area is home to the famous Lime Tree Walk , which links the Château to the Mortemets, the waterfowl reserve within King Louis XIV’s hunting estate.

Le Potager du Roi

Le Potager du Roi - Versailles

Le Potager du Roi (the King’s vegetable garden) was built between 1678 and 1683 by Jean-Baptiste La Quintinie at King Louis XIV’s request.

Well known for his experience with fruit gardens and vegetable gardens, La Quintinie was responsible for providing fruits and vegetables at the King’s table.

The prodigies accomplished by La Quintinie attracted the interest and admiration of his master, the King, who liked to come for a walk in the vegetable garden. A gardening enthusiast, King Louis XIV liked to show his vegetable garden to his illustrious guests, and he even learned how to prune fruit trees with his gardener.

Le Potager du Roi is a listed historical monument and a “remarkable garden.” Its gardeners perpetuate the art of pruning and grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Le Potager du Roi is an independent visit, not included in any ticket shown above. The entrance is located at 10 Rue du Maréchal-Joffre. Tickets cost 5€ – 3€ (high season – November to March).

The Royal Stables (Gallery of Coaches)

The Royal Stables consists of two buildings – the Great Stables and the Small Stables – identical in size but with different uses.

The Great Stables are where the hunting horses were kept (hundreds of horses according to their race and coat), while the Small Stables were used to keep the carriages, sleds, and coaches.

Today, the Great Stables’ ground floor hosts an impressive display of coaches, mainly grand ceremonial Berlin Coaches from Napoleon I’s coronation and second marriage.

The Royal Stables are located at 1 Avenue Rockefeller, just in front of the Palace, and they are open on Saturday and Sunday, from 12.30 pm to 5.30 pm November to March, and from 12.30 pm to 6.30 pm April to October.

6. Best Versailles Garden & Fountain Shows

Grandes Eaux Versailles

If you plan a day trip from Paris to Versailles during the high season (from April to October), you can enjoy beautiful shows around the gardens: the Musical Fountains Show , the Musical Gardens Show , and the Versailles Fountains Night Show .

7. Extend your Versailles Trip

Versailles' Old Town

The Versailles Estate is huge, so you’ll probably need more than a Paris day trip to Versailles to explore everything at a leisurely pace. You will also find yourself staying late if you watch the  Saturday night Fountain Show . Traveling back to your hotel in Paris after the show will be difficult because everybody leaves the show at the same time (after the Grand Finale), the train station is always crowded, and taxis back to Paris are hard to find.

Fortunately, there are several comfortable and luxurious hotels near the Château that will make your visit more convenient and that extra bit special. Here are the best-rated hotels near Versailles Palace , with something for every traveler. Spend two days rather than a day in Versailles and also visit some of the best things to do in Versailles town .

💭 Is 2 hours enough for Versailles?

Only if you plan to speed-date the place; honestly, Versailles needs more like a whole day to really experience its history and gardens.

💭 How long does it take to get to Versailles from Paris?

You’ll zip over in about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your starting line in Paris – just enough time to daydream you’re a royal!

You’re looking at about €7.30 for a round trip, which is less than a fancy Parisian cocktail but with stories that last a lot longer. Although you can expect the prices rising up to €20 during busy seasons.

I’m afraid the Paris Metro thinks Versailles is too far, but the RER C train is your trusty steed to the royal courts.

💭 What are some good day trips around Paris?

Well, besides the mandatory Versailles (in my opinion), you’ve got Monet’s garden in Giverny for the artsy souls, the storybook town of Provins, or the enchanting Château de Fontainebleau – each one, a slice of the diverse cake that is France.
