Black Cab Tour Belfast: Everything You Need To Know

A Black Cab Tour of Belfast is, in my opinion, the best way of getting an insight into the city’s past.

Now, don’t get me wrong – there’s plenty of things to do in Belfast that immerse you in the city’s history, but none compare to a Black Taxi Tour of Belfast.

These driving excursions take you across the city to the murals and peace wall to uncover the city’s turbulent history.

Below, you’ll find everything from what to expect on a Belfast Taxi Tour along with which ones we’d recommend checking out.

Some quick need-to-knows before taking a Black Cab Tour of Belfast

Although a Black Taxi Tour of Belfast is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. What are they

Belfast Black Cab Tours are given by drivers who lived through the many years of unrest in Northern Ireland. The tours offer a unique understanding of the city’s troubled past and offer an insight into how Belfast has changed over the last decades.

2. Where you’ll visit

Although the itineraries of a Black Cab Tour of Belfast will change depending on the driver, you’ll more than likely see The Shankill Road , The Falls Road , the Belfast Peace Wall , the highlights of the city and the better-known Belfast murals .

3. Are they worth doing

A Black Cab Tour of Belfast is a unique way to discover the city’s past through stories told by someone that lived through The Troubles . These tours are widely regarded as one of the best ways to learn about the city’s history.

What to expect from a Belfast Black Taxi Tour

If you’ve never heard of the Black Cab Tours of Belfast, I’ll break down what you can expect from them in the section below.

Again, it’s worth noting that there are several tour providers operating in the city, so what each offers may differ slightly.

1. A unique experience

A Black Taxi Tour is one of the most unique things to do in Northern Ireland . It’ll give you a window into the city’s past that you won’t get from any guidebook.

And it’ll treat you to a style of storytelling that’ll captivate you from beginning to end. You’ll also be taken to what are often regarded as no-go areas of Belfast that you arguably wouldn’t want to be visiting solo.

2. An unbiased insight into the Troubles

The tours provide an unbiased view of The Troubles , offering an insight into the tragedies experienced by both communities in Belfast.

You’ll also hear what it was like to live through The Troubles from a person that experienced the good and bad of the last 40 or so years.

3. A look at Belfast’s Murals

Perhaps the most unlikely attraction to come from the Troubles, was the murals that can now be found dotted around Belfast.

Some of the common themes and depictions include of Bobby Sands, Frederick Douglass, the Red Hand of Ulster and Jackie Coulter, amongst many others.

Belfast Black Cab Tour

A Belfast Black Cab Tour is not just a means of transportation; it’s an opportunity to delve into the fascinating history and culture of this vibrant city. As you embark on this unique tour, you’ll find yourself transported back in time, exploring the origins of Belfast’s political murals.

These murals offer poignant reminders of Belfast’s troubled past and the conflicts that once divided communities. Created during the height of the Troubles, they serve as visual representations of political and cultural identities, reflecting the hopes, fears, and aspirations of the people.

A Journey Through Belfast’s Streets

Our Belfast Black Cab Tour begins by winding through the narrow streets of Belfast, with each turn unveiling a new mural that tells a different story. The famous Falls Road and Shankill Road are two of the areas where murals are most concentrated, and your knowledgeable guide will provide insight into the significance of each piece of art.

As we pass by the murals, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the vibrant colors, intricate details, and powerful messages they convey. From murals depicting historical events to those commemorating individuals who lost their lives in the conflict, each artwork has its own tale to tell.

The Impact of Political Murals Today

While Belfast’s political murals serve as a reminder of the city’s troubled past, they also play a vital role in promoting understanding, dialogue, and reconciliation. Today, these once-divisive artworks have become symbols of unity and hope.

As you take in the murals, you’ll witness first hand how they have evolved over time. Many artists have moved away from depicting violent scenes and have chosen to focus on themes of peace, community, and cultural diversity. These modern murals not only inspire conversation but also contribute to the vibrant transformation of Belfast as a city. So Join us on a Belfast Black Cab Tour

A Black Taxi Tour of Belfast

Last Updated on April 4, 2024

black taxi city tour belfast

Estimated reading time: 18 minutes

Updated for 2023

By Jim Ferri

My Black Taxi tour of Belfast began with one of the most unusual introductions I’d ever had to a European city.

people standing on the Giant's Causeway - seen on a black taxi tour of Belfast

“It’s the most bombed hotel in all of Europe, Jim” my black-taxi driver Ken, told me, pointing to Belfast’s Europa Hotel .

“It was bombed 33 times during ‘the troubles,” he said, using the British euphemism for the civil war that plagued Northern Ireland for so many years.

In fact, more than 3,500 people lost their lives here from the late 1960s until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Things are calm now in the capital of Northern Ireland, and as I was whisked around Belfast on my Black Taxi tour, Ken continued chitchatting about numerous sights we passed.

As all Black Taxi drivers in Belfast are apt to do, he infused his commentary with heavy doses of local lore, gossip and, humor.

Black Taxi tours show more than “the troubles” and politics, however. They can take you all over the city and even beyond. The standard tour lasts about 90 minutes, and driver-guides will pick you up and drop you off anywhere in the city.

See the most popular Viator (TripAdvisor) tours of Belfast, with no-fee cancellation

The Bushmills Whiskey Distillery - seen on a black taxi tour of Belfast

There are also day tours to Giant’s Causeway (one of the seven wonders of the world) and the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, both up on the Coast Road , as well to the Bushmills Whiskey Distillery .

Tours will also take you to see the Titanic shipyard and a day-long tour to see the Northern Ireland locations where Game of Thrones was filmed. It’s one of many such tours that have sprung up over the years.

A Fascinating City

With Ken’s help, and later on my own for an additional day, I found Belfast to be an unexpectedly fascinating city. It’s a capital that’s full of charm and beauty, vitality, and spirit. For those who want a taste of it (highly recommended), Belfast is also an easy day trip from Dublin by train .

a street with old buildings and a modern mall - seen on a black taxi tour of Belfast

Before I had hopped into the back of Ken’s Black Taxi, I had wandered about the city a bit on my own. From my hotel I first set off to St. George’s Market , the city’s historic food market where I was disappointed to find it was open only on Saturdays.

I continued walking to Victoria Square , a upscale shopping mall flush with American and European brand names. One can’t help but admire how well all its soaring glass and steel melds so wonderfully with the old neighborhood into which it had been slipped.

people standing in front of the entrance to the Titanic Museum - seen on a black taxi tour of Belfast

After a quick look, I headed off to the much-heralded Titanic Museum , a massive monument of soaring steel and glass that dominates the neighborhood.

Everything about it had a nautical theme, from the quartet of ship bows on the exterior, down to the anchor chains that line the entrance way and guide you into the lobby. Even the ticket windows are large portholes in rough-sawn pier planking.

Get your Titanic Belfast Entrance Ticket: Titanic Visitor Experience Including SS Nomadic

The museum itself was mesmerizing, unlike any other non-art museum I’d visited. There’s also an introductory section discussing Belfast at the time the ill-fated liner was built, which is a great historic and cultural overview of the city and people.

Rescued By Ken for His Black Taxi Tour of Belfast

It was after I left the Titanic Museum, when I became a bit lost and overwhelmed by the city, that I met Ken.

a young man and woman at the front desk in a hotel lobby - seen on a black taxi tour of Belfast

I had a contact at the Northern Ireland Tourist Board , and she got us together for a Black Taxi tour. Since the tours are internationally famous, I was surprised I hadn’t thought of it myself. It turned out to be the best way not only to become acquainted with the city, but the best thing to do in Belfast.

Ken collected me at my hotel, the somewhat funky Malmaison , and since I enjoy minutia, he quickly caught my attention when he told me that the building was originally a seed warehouse. It dated to 1867, he noted, and the five heads on the facade represented the five continents of the world.

We taxied up Victoria Street past the landmark Albert Memorial Clock (“built in 1869, Jim, in memory of Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, who died of typhoid fever”). He also shared that it was slowly sinking into the ground since it was built on land reclaimed from the river. “Presently, Jim, it’s off center about four feet (1.25 m).”

The interior of an ornate, old cathedral - seen on a black taxi tour of Belfast

Off To the Cathedral and Writer’s Square

We were soon off to Belfast Cathedral , aka St. Anne’s Cathedral, a beautiful church that has a 130-foot stainless steel spire protruding through a glass platform above the altar. Incongruous as it may seem, it’s an amazing sight inside a beautiful church.

Ken then walked me across the street to Writer’s Square. There, inscribed in stone at various points, are quotations from 27 deceased Northern Ireland authors. It’s a poignant and perfect way to pay tribute to the city’s literary past. Being a writer myself, my Black Taxi tour was getting increasingly more fascinating.

mannequins of World War 2 soldiers in a museum - seen on a black taxi tour of Belfast

After Ken had found a place to park his Black Taxi, we continued on foot back across to Talbot Street, where Ken had two special places to show me.

On the way, just a minute or so up the street adjacent to the Cathedral, we passed the Northern Ireland War Memorial . It’s actually a little privately funded storefront museum, dedicated to the home front during World War II.

Although It was rather basic and very small, it was still interesting, with most of it dedicated to Americans who served in Belfast during the war.

a many walking by a bar in an ornate restaurant - seen on a black taxi tour of Belfast

The Dark Horse and Duke of York

We continued and turned onto Hill Street where Ken took me into the Dark Horse . It is a sandwich and coffee house that appears unassuming from the outside, but inside it is like no other.

Just about everything in it was an antique…the tables, the decorations, the bar, even the loo, although the plumbing was modern. It was a living antique shop, a great place for a sandwich and coffee.

Once outside again, he brought me into the alleyway next door that had murals on the walls depicting day life in the city. As we traveled about Belfast on my Black Taxi Tour, we saw many such murals.

Men sitting a tables in an ornate bar with many mirrors and posters on the wall

But what Ken wanted to show me, was the Duke of York Tavern around the corner.

The Duke of York is the sister establishment of the Dark Horse. It was destroyed in the early 1970s when the IRA planted a car bomb outside it.

It was rebuilt (a marvelous job) and today it’s once again a popular and comfortable pub. Behind the bar are over 100 varieties of different whiskeys, as well as plenty of wine and beer.

Ken took me to the Duke of York since I had told him I was interested in seeing and learning more about “the troubles” in Northern Ireland. He continued my education as we drove west toward the famous neighborhoods.

“From 1969 to 1994, about 15,500 bombs were set off by the IRA in Northern Ireland,” he told me. “And as the capital, Belfast got its fair share. It was the luck of the draw who lived and who died since bombs were placed indiscriminately.”

The Most Popular Stop on the Black Taxi Tours

After a short ride we arrived in the old Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods where political murals still cover many walls.

a woman walking past a building that has a mural of soldiers on its side

We stopped along the wall that was built by British soldiers to separate the Irish and the British factions. Union Jacks and Irish flags were still flying at opposite ends of the street.

You don’t find murals only in the Catholic and Protestant Neighborhoods, however. You come across them in different areas all over the city.

I realized I wouldn’t have seen any of them, as well as the Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods, if I hadn’t taken a Black Taxi tour of Belfast.

The ornate buildings of an old university

Ken then headed off to Queen’s Quarter to show me stately Queen’s University , the Botanical Gardens and the Ulster Museum.

They’re all located right next to one another on University and Stranmills Roads. All along the way were plenty of little restaurants and coffeehouses.

In the midst of it all, was Friars Bush Graveyard , a burial ground possibly dating back to pre-Christian times. It appeared to be a beautiful place to take a walk. Unfortunately, it’s only open by appointment and for scheduled tours.

Men standing by a bar drining beer in an ornate pub and restaurant

The Crown Liquor Saloon

Heading back down to Great Victoria Street, we pulled over at the corner of Amelia Street.

I had asked Ken to stop since I wanted to see the renowned Crown Liquor Saloon , built in 1840. It also had a good afternoon crowd and inside I found one of the more ornate pubs in Belfast.

people sitting at a table in an ornate old restaurant

All about was Italian tile, fine glass engraving, opulent marble, and an embossed ceiling. Cozy booths are snuggled up along the side. I later learned the panels in its restaurant were originally designed for the Britannic, the sister ship of the Titanic.

I was soon receiving more Black-Taxi insider info from Ken. It was the wife of the owner, not her husband, Ken told me, who chose the name “Crown.” But her husband, not enthralled with British royalty, had a crown embedded in the tile at the doorway. His reason was that he wanted people to scuff their feet on it when they entered.

The area of Belfast about the Saloon is quite alive and filled with both Belfastians as well as tourists. There are plenty of restaurants in the area and live Irish music at some of the pubs in the evenings. Robinson’s Bar, right next to the Crown Liquor Saloon, offers live music every night of the week.

Another Stop on Our Taxi Tour: The Great Room Restaurant

Five minutes later we stopped at the Merchant Hotel since Ken wanted to show me the hotel’s Great Room Restaurant . The hotel was the former headquarters of Ulster Bank, and the restaurant is in the main banking hall of the building. The room, a blend of Victorian and Art Deco, is spectacular.

When we returned to the Malmaison at the end of our Black Taxi tour of Belfast, Ken had me look down Victoria Street towards the mountains in the distance.

I didn’t see it right away, but not until he mentioned Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels . Then I immediately saw the silhouette of the sleeping Gulliver lying down with his face looking up towards the sky.

Although Swift was a Dubliner, Ken told me, he was a Church of Ireland minister, and his church was on the other side of that mountain. According to local legend, Swift had been visiting in Belfast when he looked up at the rock formation. The formation is called Napoleon’s nose locally, since it looks like a silhouette of the French emperor. And looking at Napoleon’s nose is where Swift got the inspiration for his novel.

When I returned home, I researched the legend and found the place in Belfast where Swift is said to have been standing at the time of his inspiration. It was, quite appropriately, on Lilliput Street.

Choosing a Black Taxi Tour of Belfast

Belfast’s Black Taxi tours are one of the best things to do in Belfast and are exceptionally popular with visitors. Interestingly, when we all began traveling again after the pandemic, it was Belfastians who began taking Black Taxi Tours. Now thousands of international travelers are joining them. They come by car, plane, train, and cruise ships.

There are just a few companies offering Black Taxi tours. While they may visit most of the same places, you need to read the fine print on each of their sites. For example, some will provide a free pick-up throughout the central part of the city. Others require you to come to a pickup point or there will be an extra charge. There are differences in pricing, as well.

The following are the best-known companies, listed in random order. Note that all prices are in British pounds since Northern Ireland is part of the British Empire, and not part of Ireland, which uses the Euro. Also note that many of the company names and web addresses are very similar, so be cautious when reviewing them.

Belfast Black Taxi Tours: Fascinating Journeys Through History

Belfast black taxi tours give you a unique perspective on a city teeming with history, culture, and stunning landscapes.

Among its myriad experiences, one stands out for its unique blend of history, personal storytelling, and local perspectives – the Belfast Black Taxi Tours .

These tours, mostly led by drivers who have lived through Belfast’s turbulent past, offer tourists an unparalleled glimpse into the city’s rich, yet troubled history.

A Historical Perspective: The Birth of the Belfast Black Taxi Tours

The Black Taxi tours of Belfast originated following the period known as ‘The Troubles,’

This time of civil unrest and political conflict spanned nearly three decades from the late 1960s to the mid-1990s.

Amidst the turmoil, the Black Taxi evolved as a means of safe transportation for the local community, navigating the divided city, always with a unique understanding of its dynamics.

Over time, these taxis transformed into mobile history-telling platforms, providing a personal narrative of Belfast’s past.

Today, the Black Taxi tours have become a must-do experience for  visitors exploring the city rich and complex history.

What to Expect from a Black Taxi Tour Of Belfast

A Black Taxi tour typically starts at your preferred location within the city.

If you’re wondering what a Belfast black taxi looks like, it is essentially the same type of famous black cab you will see in London.

The iconic London Hackney cab, a constant presence on Belfast’s streets, will be your mode of transport during your tour.

The cabs usually offer good comfort and elevated vision, ensuring the best possible experience for tourists.

The tour guides are almost always local drivers, who have lived through the Troubles.  So you will really enjoy their narrative along with personal stories.

The black taxi drivers have significant local knowledge and a deep understanding of the city’s past.

They do their best to keep a balanced perspective of the citys troubled past, so visitors hear all sides of the story –  allowing them to form their own opinions about the city’s old divisions.

Sightseeing Tours Vs. Belfast Political Tours

While generalised sightseeing tours offer views of the Titanic Centre , Stormont and other Belfast landmarks –  the Belfast ‘political tours’ dive into the heart of the city’s tumultuous past.

Your black cab driver will take you through ‘loyalist’ and ‘nationalist’ neighbourhoods and provide insights into the political unrest, and the many struggles of the local people, throughout the 30 years of theTroubles.

Both tours have their unique charm and appeal so you can choose whichever you prefer, based on your interests.

Key Stops on Belfast Black Taxi Tours

A standard Belfast Black Taxi tour itinerary usually includes visits to several significant locations across the city. These include:

The Shankill Road And The Falls Road:

These two roads, representing the Protestant and Catholic communities, are widely renowned for their politically inspired murals and the infamous ‘Peace Walls’ that run through this part of the city.

The tour lets you see these walls up close and even sign your name, if you like!

The Famous Belfast Murals

Black taxi tours will almost certainly include the Belfast Mural tour. Belfast’s murals are a significant part of its cultural landscape.

They provide insights into Belfast and Northern Ireland’s political past, particularly the murals in the city’s West, depicting the Troubles’ history.

belfast mural tours

The Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods come alive with stories your black taxi tour guide will undoubtedly enjoy narrating.  This makes the Belfast political mural tour a must-do, we think.

The murals offer a visual narrative of the city’s past, depicting political figures, historical events, and local heroes.

Your black cab guide will offer detailed explanations of these murals, enhancing their understanding and significance.

Crumlin Road Gaol

Commonly referred to as ‘The Crum,’ this former prison played a crucial role during the Troubles.

A visit to the Gaol provides insights into its integral part in The Troubles.

Belfast Black Taxi Tours Are A Unique Learning Experience

The Belfast Black Taxi tours are not just about sightseeing. They offer an immersive learning experience that brings Northern Ireland’s history to life.

The tour guide will encourage interaction, inviting your questions and enjoying discussions.

This one-to-one engagement enhances the overall experience, making the tour insightful, and unforgettable.

Reviews Of Belfast Black Taxi Tours

The Black Taxi tours have received rave reviews from tourists worldwide. They’ve been praised for their knowledgeable and engaging drivers and their comprehensive knowledge

Many tourists often describe the tours as a highlight of their visit to Belfast, appreciating the opportunity to learn about the city’s past in such a personal and engaging manner.

Booking Information

Don’t Miss Out On A Belfast Famous Black Cab Tour

The Black Taxi tours offer a unique way to explore Belfast’s rich yet troubled history.

They provide a personal, unbiased, and comprehensive insight into the city’s past, making them an unmissable experience for any visitor to Belfast.

Whether you’re a history buff, a cultural explorer, or simply a curious traveller, a Black Taxi tour is sure to be a highlight of your Belfast adventure.

In the words of one satisfied tourist,  “I still cannot believe that aside from there being a Peace Wall in Great Britain and Northern Ireland that there are still gates which need to be closed to separate the Shankill Road from the Falls Road at 6pm every night to the next morning… I will go back and do it again, to take in all the things I couldn’t fully comprehend at the time. So should you!”

Top 14 Things to Do in Belfast, Northern Ireland

B elfast, or as it is known in the Irish language Béal Feirste, is the capital city and one of the top places to visit in Northern Ireland .

This beautiful city is steeped in history and is a must-visit for those heading to the emerald isle. In the 70’s and 80’s Belfast suffered greatly during The Troubles , and was deemed one of the most unsafe cities in Europe. Fast forward almost forty years and Belfast is a booming city full of art, culture, Game of Thrones film locations , and of course history. There are so many wonderful things to do in Belfast making it the perfect city break for a few days.

A Quick Overview of Belfast’s History

While the city has a rich history linked with the political unrest in the late 20 th century, it has come a long way since then and now offers so much more. An incredible food scene, a bumping arts and music industry and the friendliest locals you could ever hope to find, all combine to make it a brilliant place to visit.

But if you are interested to learn more about the history of Belfast and The Troubles, there is a walking tour with a political focus on this time.  In case you are wondering where to find all the friendly locals, pop your head into one of the many pubs and you will find them enjoying some of the best whiskey and beer that Ireland has to offer.

One of the proudest achievements in this city’s history is that it was the building place of the Titanic. As a proud Northern Irishman, I have always been amused by the fact that we are so proud of a ship that sunk on its maiden voyage but I understand exactly why we are. It was a time when the city was a major industrial power in the world and an achievement that really helped put Belfast on the map. The story of the Titanic has now become one of the most popular reasons to visit the region.

Being from Northern Ireland, it is my pleasure to share all my local knowledge with you so read on to find out all the best things to do in Belfast city.

1. Titanic Belfast

Titanic Belfast is the world’s largest Titanic visitor experience. Like I said we are very proud of it. Titanic Belfast offers visitors the chance to take the Titanic experience, which offers much more than just a museum. The experience is spread over 9 galleries and uses special effects, interactive exhibits, full-scale reconstructions and numerous artifacts from the ship itself to really help visitors explore the legend and history of the Titanic.

Titanic Belfast also enables users to walk the docks where the Titanic was built and board the SS Nomadic, the world’s last remaining White Star Vessel. The building itself is a tribute to the White Star Line shipping company as it is in the shape of a star when viewed from the air.

Titanic Belfast also lies in the shadow of two giant shipbuilding cranes located in the Harland and Wolff shipyard. They are known locally as Samson and Goliath and can be seen from miles around. These giant yellow cranes have become one of the defining features of the city skyline.

2. St George’s Market

This is one of Belfast’s oldest attractions. Since 1604, there has been a Friday market on the St George’s site and the tradition continues with the market operating on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The market is well known locally as the best place to get fresh produce but has also become a place to buy unique gifts from Belfast’s artists.

The atmosphere here, especially on the weekends is amazing. The booming calls of the vendors as they sell their goods is often mixed in with the sound of live music. The market is usually very busy but this is what creates the buzzing atmosphere and makes it such a great place to visit.

3. Black Taxi Tour Belfast

The city of Belfast has a checkered past that will forever be ingrained in the city. While Belfast has moved past this troubled time it is still important to discover the true history of the city. A black taxi tour of the city’s murals is an excellent way to learn all about The Troubles. Murals have been painted on the sides of buildings to depict each side of the community’s war efforts.

The taxi drivers have lived through The Troubles and are able to give their own stories as to what it was really like. They will take you to both the Nationalist and Unionist areas so you can get both sides of the story. Although it may not have been a pretty history, it is certainly an interesting one.

4. Cave Hill

Cave Hill Country Park offers the chance to enjoy panoramic views across the city and beyond. The walking trails are suitable for casual walkers and also offer more demanding trails for outdoor enthusiasts. Regardless of which route you decide to take, the end result is still a stunning aerial view of Belfast and Belfast Lough. The park also includes Cave Hill Visitor Centre, an adventurous playground, gardens, orienteering routes, archaeological sights and the beautiful Belfast Castle.

5. Divis and The Black Mountain

Another great option for those that love to go hiking in Ireland is to climb Divis and the Black Mountain. These two trails offer similar spectacular views of the city and Belfast Lough but are a bit more rugged than Cave Hill. Keep an eye out for red grouse, skylarks and peregrine falcons as you make your way to the top. From the top of Divis Mountain you can see the Scottish, Cumbrian and Welsh Uplands on a clear day.

6. Belfast City Hall

Free public tours around Belfast City Hall are a great way to learn the history of the building while also seeing some of its best features. You can also visit the Titanic Memorial Garden and other monuments located inside the grounds. The City Hall is home to many great works of art from painters across Ireland and beyond, including my talented grandfather, Norman Shaw. Be sure to keep an eye out for his work when you visit. It is also worth passing by Belfast City Hall at night as it is illuminated by coloured spotlights accentuating its architectural features.

7. Grand Opera House

The Grand Opera House is the most iconic theatre in Northern Ireland and was actually the first listed building in the country. Its main Victoria Theatre is simply beautiful and is host to a wide variety of performances including plays, musicals, dance, opera, comedy and much more. Having visited here once every year while at school, I can tell you the best way to truly enjoy this place is to catch a show of some sort and immerse yourself in the local culture.

8. Crumlin Road Gaol

The Crumlin Road Gaol operated as a fully functioning prison for 150 years from the mid 1800s. In 1996 it shut its doors to prisoners for good but it has reopened as a tourist attraction. The prison was home to some of the worst criminals in the country, 17 men were hanged here and there were hunger strikes and riots throughout the years. It is quite an unusual tourist attraction but one that has become very popular in the years since it has opened.

9. Ulster Museum

The Ulster Museum tells the story of humankind in Ireland and also further afield. It is a wonderful collection of art, history, and science all under the one roof. They have dinosaur bones, an ancient Egyptian mummy and the body of a polar bear to name a few. It is an activity I would highly recommend on a rainy day, and in Northern Ireland your chances of a rainy day are pretty high. The Ulster Museum is located in the grounds of the botanical gardens so if you visit on a day with decent weather, you can enjoy a walk through this lovely green oasis in the city centre after your tour around the museum.

The Ulster Museum is open Tuesdays – Sundays from 10:00 – 17:00 and admission is completely free for all ages.

10. W5 Interactive Discovery Centre – Things to Do in Belfast with Kids

This is personally one of my favourite things to do in Belfast. I first went to the W5 science museum when I was 7 years old and I have been coming back ever since. The museum is designed for kids, so it is a great family outing, but I think it also appeals to the big kids as well. This museum is a fully interactive experience which is a grown-up way of saying you get to play with all the exhibits. W5 was built to try and make science fun and interesting and they have absolutely done that here. Regardless of your age or interest in science you are sure to have a great time here as you watch science come to life.

11. Watch a Belfast Giants Ice Hockey Game

I’m sure this is the last thing you may have expected to appear on a list of things to do in Belfast but there really is an ice hockey team here. They play in the SSE Arena on the outskirts of town. Having been to several Giants games in my life I must say it is a brilliant way to spend an evening. The atmosphere inside the stadium is always lively and the Irish people sure know how to make some noise when it comes to sport.

If you want to watch a sport that is more traditional in Northern Ireland, then you can head to an Ulster Rugby match instead. The Ulster team plays in Ravenhill, which is also located in Belfast. Attending an Ulster Rugby match will give you the chance to see some of the best rugby players in the world compete in one of the most physical games around.

12. Have a pint at the Duke of York

No trip to Northern Ireland is complete without spending a bit of time in the local pubs. The country is renowned for its lively bars, great beer, and traditional music. You will find all of these in abundance in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. The best bar here and probably in the whole city is the Duke of York. The rustic design, crowds of thirsty patrons and brilliant live music make this the best nights’ craic in Belfast.

The interior of the bar is covered in bits and pieces of pub memorabilia collected from across Northern Ireland by the owner Willie, while the outside has murals painted by local artists. The pub can be found on Commercial Court which is a beautiful cobbled street lined with red brick buildings.

I’d recommend trying a pint of Harp Lager , as well as the usual suggestion to have a Guinness. Harp is synonymous with the pub culture in Northern Ireland and second only in popularity to Guinness.

13. Stay in the Most Bombed Hotel in Europe

The Europa Hotel located right in the heart of Belfast is known as the most bombed hotel in Europe. During the Troubles it was bombed 36 times. Quite a title to hold. Nowadays it is a four-star hotel that offers guests a stunning view overlooking the city. If you are going to stay anywhere in Belfast, then why not stay in one with such a famous history.

But if you are looking for other options, take a look here on where to stay in Belfast .

14. Drive The Causeway Coastal Route

While not strictly a Belfast activity, I couldn’t leave this off the list. The North Coast of Northern Ireland  is one of the most spectacular places in the world. The drive from Belfast to Derry/Londonderry takes you along rugged cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean and through the rolling green hills of the Northern Irish countryside. The main attractions along this route are The Giants Causeway, Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge and Mussenden Temple. If you have the time, make sure to explore all the amazing sights along the Causeway Coast.

If you are a Game of Thrones fan, then this trip is a must. Many of the locations in the hit HBO series were filmed along this stretch of coastline. Ballintoy Harbour was used as the Iron Islands and The Dark Hedges featured as The Kings Road just to name a few. You can follow the trail yourself or book a guided Game of Thrones tour from Belfast to see all the different filming locations.

Belfast is a place with a storied past but it has managed to develop into a vibrant city that welcomes millions of visitors every year. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland and it’s easy to see why. There are so many amazing things to do in Belfast that you may struggle to fit them all in on your trip. Belfast is full of beautiful architecture, museums and of course pubs. It is definitely a capital city worthy of it’s title. A trip here will only leave you eager for more.
