5-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided

Absolutely fabulous.. was a bit nervous as not really a camper or canoeer but it was great. Very nice and relaxed guys at do the north and totally hassle free kit.. takes no time to pack up the camper before you are off.. and the kit is seriously quality. Luxury package well worth it (although never used the hammock).. Had such a good time we extended our trip by a night.. its beautiful.. you are totally alone.. swimming in the sea or in little lagoons.. food is really good.. (obviously we are great chefs).. fire building is easy.. best holiday ever! Thank you do the north.

King’s Day 2024 Tour

King’s Day 2024

My King's Day experience with Yes-Trips in Amsterdam was absolutely incredible! From start to finish, the entire celebration was flawlessly organized, making it one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The atmosphere in Amsterdam on King's Day is electric, and Yes-Trips truly knows how to maximize the fun. Whether you opt for their full package with ESN associations, the budget-friendly campsite accommodation, or the exclusive cruise party, you're guaranteed to have a blast. I went for the full package and was blown away by the seamless transportation, comfortable accommodation, and expert guides who made sure we didn't miss a beat. The highlight for me was definitely the cruise party along Amsterdam's main canal. Dancing to great music while cruising past the city's iconic landmarks was an experience I'll never forget. Plus, the vibrant orange sea of people in the streets added to the festive atmosphere, making it a celebration unlike any other. Overall, I can't recommend Yes-Trips enough for anyone looking to experience King's Day in Amsterdam. Their attention to detail, friendly staff, and dedication to ensuring everyone has a fantastic time truly sets them apart. If you're thinking about joining the celebration next year, don't hesitate to book with Yes-Trips – you won't regret it!

7-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided Tour

7-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided

I did this trip with a few friends in 2010 and when we were packing up on our last day we were all saying how we would love to do this trip again (or just not leave), so this year with the same friends and a few new ones we wen't back and had an absolutely amazing time, I really wish I could go every year! It's just set up so perfectly and the place is so perfect. Every day paddling, gathering wood, cooking amazing meals, watching the sunset. It's just perfect. If you like camping it's a must do at least once in your life.

8-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided Tour

8-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided

I am usually more into hiking rather than water sports, but my partner wanted to go kayaking in Scandinavia. After some googling we found several operators that offered kayaking tours in Sweden, but the website from Do the North was the most informative and best structured one. The reviews were all very positive and therefore we decided to give it a go. Despite not having had any kayaking experience at all this trip turned into a wonderful outdoor adventure! The guide, Thomas, was very helpful from the moment we first contacted him until the end of our tour. The equipment provided was very high quality and I felt that we really got great value for our money. I liked best that the tour was self-guided and that we were free to go wherever we wanted whenever we wanted. At the same time, however, the operator provided a safety net. Everything went smooth, but if something had gone wrong help would have only been a phone call away. I highly recommend this tour to everybody interested in kayaking and outdoor vacations. Even if water sport is not your thing (like in my case) this tour will make you change your mind and wanting to come back for more!

Camping Europe Trip Reviews

Wonderful tour, great tour guide (Shaun), good and scenic campsites, large tents. I wouldn’t rate the hiking trip a grade 4 though, it’s a more a 5 or even 6 on some days. You definitely need to be fit. Poor chef (Kieran) he was late on several occasions for dinner in the evenings due to staying out too long paragliding. Breakfast and lunch were very poor, very very basic. Not enough vegetables or fruit options either.
Great landscape, great equipment, great organization! I highly recommend the tour ?‍♀️
This was a superb self-guided five day kayak/camping trip. The scenery is magnificent. We were novice paddlers and faced challenging conditions on two days (out of five). But the equipment provided was high quality and gave us the confidence to punch the envelope. The instruction and advice was effective and supportive. Such a memorable trip!

Camping in Spain rural area

The Best Places To Camp In Spain

With its diverse geographical features, from mountainous regions to charming coastal towns , Spain is one of Europe’s best destinations for camping. You will find many established camping sites with amenities like toilets and showers, allowing for a more comfortable camping experience. But if you are adventurous, Spain has many unspoiled spots with hardly any campers, especially in the inland region.

Spain, with its diverse topography, ranging from sun-drenched beaches to soaring mountain ranges and arid plains, offers a plethora of captivating camping sites. It’s a land where cultural vibrancy dances in harmony with nature’s grandeur, making it a premier destination for those with a love for the outdoors. Let us explore some of the most iconic camping destinations in this passionate and colorful country.

1) Picos de Europa National Park

Nestled between Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile and León, Picos de Europa National Park is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and hikers. This rugged mountainous region, replete with verdant valleys, deep caves, and fast-flowing rivers, presents a dramatically beautiful landscape. Camping here means waking up to the breathtaking sight of craggy limestone peaks piercing the sky, while the morning mist gently carpets the valleys.

Campgrounds, like Camping El Cares Picos de Europa, offer well-equipped facilities including tent sites, caravans, and even bungalows for those seeking a bit more comfort. Surrounded by the mesmerizing beauty of the park, this is an ideal base from which to embark on hiking, canyoning, and even caving adventures.

The Allure of Andalucía

2) cabo de gata-níjar natural park, andalucía.

Venture south to the sun-soaked lands of Andalucía, where the arid landscape of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park unfurls. As Spain’s largest coastal protected area, located in the southeastern part of the country, it is known for its stark desert scenes, volcanic cliffs, and pristine Mediterranean beaches.

Camping here is a chance to experience the raw beauty of this semi-desert ecosystem. One of the prime camping locations within the park is the Los Escullos camping area. Nestled between the sea and the mountains, it offers a unique blend of tranquil beachfront relaxation and adventurous mountain exploration.

3) El Chorro, Andalucía

In the heart of Andalucía lies El Chorro, a region renowned for its stunning turquoise-hued lakes and the dramatic gorge, Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. This locale is a paradise for rock climbers, with its famous Caminito del Rey, one of the world’s most perilous walkways now tamed for tourist exploration.

The Camping El Chorro, positioned strategically near the lakes and the gorge, offers the best starting point for your outdoor pursuits. As the sun sets, the skies over El Chorro transform into a stargazing spectacle, making it a serene and sublime experience for campers.

The Coastal Gems

4) costa brava, catalonia.

Heading northeast to Catalonia, the Costa Brava stretches as a beautiful tapestry of rugged cliffs, secluded coves, and picturesque fishing villages . This “Wild Coast” is a haven for campers, with numerous campsites dotting the coastline.

One such location, Cala Llevado, is a four-star campsite located near Tossa de Mar. Here, terraced pitches offer spectacular views of the sea, and direct access to the beach provides endless possibilities for water-based activities. Immerse yourself in the coastal beauty of Costa Brava , where the azure sea plays a melodious symphony that lulls you to sleep.

5) Cíes Islands, Galicia

Lastly, journey to Spain’s northwest corner and discover the Cíes Islands in Galicia. Often hailed as the ‘Galician Caribbean’, these islands are home to crystal-clear waters, beautiful white sandy beaches, and a rich diversity of birdlife.

Accessible only by boat and with a limit on daily visitors, camping here feels like being marooned on a tropical paradise. The only campground, Camping Islas Cíes, offers basic facilities, but the unique experience of camping in a blissfully tranquil and untouched environment far outweighs the lack of luxurious amenities.

Spain, with its vibrant regional identities and diverse landscapes, promises a rich tapestry of camping experiences that caters to every outdoor enthusiast’s preference. From the rugged mountains of Picos de Europa to the tranquil beaches of Costa Brava, each site is a testament to the country’s natural grandeur.

Ferienparadis Natterer See  is, for us, one of the best camping sites in Europe. In the most glorious setting amongst the Tyrollean Alps of Austria , by the side of a pretty lake and with fantastic facilities, we could easily have spent a month here as we road tripped Austria . This has to be one of the best camping experiences in Europe!

With easy access into Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains, there is much to do here. Innsbruck in summer  is a playground for lovers of the great outdoors. You can walk from the campsite itself or head up on the cable cars surrounding the city for great hiking and downhill mountain biking or try some extreme sports such as paracending and rafting. Cool off in the lake when you get back after all that hard work!  In winter, it’s all about the skiing with shuttles recoded from the site.

The facilities are excellent with the best sanitaries we have seen. Well designed, using them feels like being in a posh gym at home. The restaurant, situated by the lake, is a lovely place to while away the evening with a great selection of dishes and pizzas to take away. There is a small shop, fresh bread in the mornings and all the usual facilities you would expect from a five star site, including excellent and friendly customer service.

Kamp Galeb  is a really lovely and recommended campsite in Croatia. Located near the famous coastal town of Omis , it is one of the best camping options in the region and places you in a perfect position to explore some of the  best islands in Croatia.

The campsite offers 231 touring pitches and around 50 mobile homes. All situated not far from the beautiful sea and the wonderful sandy beach with a view of Omis mountains. No matter if you’re camping in a motorhome, caravan or tent – here, everyone will find their ideal place. All the pitches are located between poplar, birch, linden and tamarisk trees, which offer wonderful cool shade on hot summer days.

Our favorite choice at Kamp Galeb are the mobile homes right by the sea in the first row. Especially in the low season you will enjoy a wonderfully quiet and peaceful atmosphere. A big plus is your own jacuzzi on the terrace, from which you will have a breath-taking view of the sea. These cool mobile homes can accommodate up to eight people – perfect if you take your family there!

FACILITIES:  wifi, fresh bread, large mini-market, restaurant, snack bar, pizzeria, takeaway, bar, communal BBQs, gas exchange, fridge hire, car hire, motorhome services, patrolled grounds, dog friendly

Another amazing campsite in Croatia that is absolutely recommended is Camping Lanterna . This one is situated in Porec in Istria and is especially popular with families with children. The campsite stretches for 3km directly along the beautiful coast and is surrounded by intact nature with magnificent fragrant pine forests. Here, campers can expect spacious pitches, but there are also various themed villages with modern furnished mobile homes as well as exclusive glamping tents, which especially delight couples. Dog owners are also welcome on this camping site and there are separated sections with dog beaches.

The wide range of leisure activities is also a reason, why Camping Lanterna is so popular in Istria. While children romp in the Aquamar Lanterna family water park with pirate ship and water slide or play in the Maro Club, parents can relax by the sea, drink cocktails at the beach bar or treat themselves to a massage.

Another unique thing is the beautiful Val Adria sandy family beach, an impressive white sandy beach that is hard to find anywhere else in Istria. Here you can enjoy a powder sugar fine beach and fantastic turquoise sea colors. Guests can rent sunbeds and umbrellas here, and if you like, you can have a cool drink at the cool beach bar. If this is too busy for you, don’t worry, there are countless other amazing beaches und bathing spots along the campground’s shoreline.

Not only the campsite worth visiting, the surrounding area is terrific and invites exciting excursions and day trips. You should definitely visit Pula, a beautiful port city with the imposing Roman Arena as the main attraction. It is also nice to visit the old town of Porec, the coastal town of Novigrad and the hinterland of Istria.

Camping in Croatia

Camping Porto Sole, Vrsar

A DDRESS: Petalon 1, 52450, Vrsar, Istria

OPEN:  All year round

SIZE:  100 pitches & 334 mobile homes for hire

ACTIVITIES:   Outdoor pool, kids pool, beach access, snorkelling, water sports, playground, kids clubs, table tennis, multi-sports court, boule, tennis €, crazy golf, cycle routes, entertainment programme,

FACILITIES:  EHU, mini-market, fresh bread, grocery, takeaway, pizzeria, restaurant, cafe/bar, laundry, motorhome services, wifi, security, dog friendly

The Campsite Porto Sole in Vrsar, on the Istrian peninsula is a fantastic place to relax and unwind. Whether you have a few days or weeks, this beautiful campsite located by the sea has picture-perfect views and a really relaxed vibe. The campsite itself is quite large, the pitches are spacious and there are plenty of trees and plants for privacy.

The sanitary facilities are a good size and always clean with lovely cleaning staff circulating regularly and there are multiple sanitary blocks spread out across the campgrounds so you never really have to walk far. The water is drinkable but we personally put it through a water filter as the water has a strong flavour. The laundry and washing-up facilities are sizeable and more than adequate.

There is an endless number of things to do within walking distance from the campground. The beach is just on your doorstep, and if you choose a pitch by the beach, that is literally the case. Porto Sole have their own cafe by the beach or there is an easy coastal walk and within minutes you will pass many bars and restaurants in the nearby marina.

If you enjoy boats, the marina is a great site in itself. Many boat tours leave from the marina including island tours and dolphin sightseeing tours.

For active people, there is a pool and tennis courts. There are also many water sports nearby such as kayaking, diving, and swimming.

Campsite Porto Sole makes a great base for exploring Istria. It is only 20 minutes from the historic town of Porec, which is home to the UNESCO 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica among other many other historic attractions. Rovinj is also less than 40 minutes south. Rovinj’s old town of tiny cobblestone alleyways filled with shops and small cafes is a great way to spend a day out.

A little further afield, Pula, the main city of Istria is less than a one-hour drive.

While Camping Porto Sole is open during the winter for guests, bear in mind that the area is essentially built for summer tourism, so most things close for the winter. There are no tours, and many of the nearby restaurants will be shut. The campsite cafe stays open as do a few of the other restaurants within walking distance so there are still options.

Camping La Farigoulette  is the perfect choice if you’re looking to explore the Verdon Gorge area in France , one of the best European countries for camping holidays. Within a few kilometres of the campsite you have the famous Valensole lavender and sunflower fields which are a sight to behold during the summer months. Also nearby is one of the most beautiful villages in France, Moustiers St Marie, and then, of course, there’s the stunning Lac du Sainte Croix.

The campsite itself is fairly small compared to most French campsites but this is what we liked most about it. It’s situated on the shores of a lake where you have a huge range of water sports available to you. The highlight for us was hiring an electric boat and taking it out for the day with a picnic. We ventured towards the neighbouring Lac du Sainte Croix via a very narrow but breathtakingly beautiful gorge with turquoise waters.

The campsite has pitches for tents, motorhomes and caravans as well as chalets, but we opted for a safari-style tent with kitchen and bathroom. There is one main pool and a smaller one for children. Next to it you’ll find a kids’ playground and outdoor gym. There’s also a football and volleyball area and the obligatory table tennis tables. All of these great facilities make this an ideal site for family camping holidays in Europe.

If you don’t feel like cooking, there’s an onsite pizza restaurant and a small shop for essentials. It has everything you need but remains a lovely, intimate site in the heart of one of the most beautiful regions of France.

ACTIVITIES:  Playground, walking & cycle routes, boule, table tennis, bowling alley, jacuzzi

FACILITIES:  EHU, fresh bread, takeaway, pizzeria, restaurant, cafe/bar, laundry, motorhome services, water & water 50m from pitch, wifi, security

I won’t exaggerate if I say that Camping de l’Aigle  is a campsite with a stunning view, making it one of the best places to camp in Europe. Perched on a hill above the little village of Aiguines, the campsite offers a breathtaking view over the turquoise waters of the Lake of Sainte-Croix. The camping is located on the D71, which makes it the perfect base to discover the Gorges du Verdon area in Southern France.

It’s only a couple of minutes walk from the campsite to the village. There’s a lovely bakery and a few restaurants in the village, as well as a grocery shop and a shop for local products. So you basically don’t need to use your car to go out in the evening or even to do some basic grocery shopping.

From the campsite you can easily reach the lake by car. Les Salles-sur-Verdon is only a fifteen minute drive. The lake offers a few lovely beaches and lots of watersport activities. Les Grands Pins  was our go-to site when the children were growing up, it’s one of the best campsites in France for kids. Set amongst shady pine trees, with direct access to the beach and a great pool complex, we couldn’t wait to arrive here for our annual holiday, this is camping France at its very best!

Les Grands Pins is a medium-sized and friendly site, run by Yelloh Village, a French company operating campsites across France including the Loire Valley and Brittany. For us, this site offered everything For us, this site offered everything and we think it’s one of the best holiday parks in France.

Modern facilities, great clubs for the kids, evening entertainment (perhaps slightly dodgy on occasions but where isn’t?) and loads of activities. Pitch sizes are not super-generous but adequate, the sanitaries modern and clean and everything you need in terms of dining and shopping on site.

Within walking distance of the nearby town of Lacanau-Ocean, known for it’s annual surfing championships and cool, laid-back vibe, we would head in most evenings for an ice-cream and wander. There’s also a great market here every Wednesday.

The Aber Benoit Campsite is a little ocean-front campground located in a small town called St Pabu in Western Brittany, France. This area of the country is known for its incredible beaches, unique culture and delicious snacks and drinks you absolutely need to try .

The largest city in the area is Brest which you can reach in just over 30 minutes by car.  Aber Benoit Camping is a favourite among locals and European tourists who come here for the incredible scenery and beautiful nature. There are plenty of things to do nearby.

The campsite is located right on one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. The water is crystal clear and amazing for swimming, water sports or simply relaxing in the sun. You could almost confuse it with beaches in the Maldives or somewhere in the Caribbean.

Aber Benoit Camping is a quiet campsite popular among families and couples. This is not the place to come if you’re looking for nightlife since St Pabu is very small and there is rarely much going on. This is a great spot to relax and unwind and truly enjoy camping.

The campsite frequently sells out, especially during the summertime, so it’s highly advisable to book in advance, which can be done online in only a few minutes. Camping in Iceland

Þakgil campsite, vik.

A DDRESS: Sunnubraut 7, Vík

OPEN: May – September

S UITABLE FOR:  Tents and campervans (there is a 14km unmade road to get to the site. 4 x not required but larger motorhomes may struggle)

SIZE:  no designated pitches, 9 cabins sleeping 4 each

ACTIVITIES:   hiking routes

FACILITIES: basic EHU, showers, dining area, dog friendly, hot shower, motorhome/RV service area

The Thakgil Campsite , 10km from Reykjavik and nestled right in the heart of Iceland’s South Coast, is the most scenic campsite in this country. “Þak”, meaning roof, and “gil”, meaning canyon, is the perfect imagery to describe your surroundings once you find that sweet spot to pitch your tent; jagged green and black peaks tower over a lush field, making this campsite a must-see when you’re camping in Iceland.

With how popular Iceland has become nowadays, this is one place where you’ll find silence and no crowds in the land of fire and ice.

While most travelers tend to choose the campsite in Vik for their South Coast stay, those that want that extra touch of awe, and to seriously have their minds blown, make the 40-minute drive through the moody hues to arrive at this campers paradise that will make you feel as though you’re on the Lord of the Rings movie set.

The most unique feature of this campsite, other than its location, is that there is a cave on site that has been turned into a dining area. At night, they light tea lights inside the cave, giving a magical ambiance to your favourite camp foods.

This campsite is very remote, so there aren’t any shops or gas nearby, but it does have spectacular hiking opportunities. There are three main trails that begin and end at the campsite: Maelifell, Austurafréttur Range, and Remunudargil Ravine. Along these trails, you will see rivers, glaciers, waterfalls, caves, and black sand. Each one features a different view, length, and difficulty, but I recommend exploring all of them before you leave the area. Maelifell was my personal favourite, but make sure you have a bit of hiking experience before you set out on that one.

Out of the entire round-up of the best campgrounds in Iceland , Þakgil Campsite has the best views, best trails, quietest atmosphere, and best overall camping experience. This is an ideal place to camp if you’re exploring the South Coast of Iceland because it is close to Thorsmork, Vestmannaejyar, Skogafoss Waterfall, Dyrhólaey, Solheimasandur Plane Wreck, and the infamous black sand beach, Reynisfjara Beach.

Þakgil Campsite is only accessible in the summer months and even two-wheel-drive cars can make it to the location. There are plenty of tent spots available, cabin rentals, and places to park your campervan!

Camping in Italy

Campeggio monte bianco la sorgente.

A DDRESS: Courmayeur, Locata Peuterey 1, Val Veny,  11013 Courmayeur, Valle D’Aosta

OPEN:  29th May – 27th September

SUITABLE FOR: Tents, caravans, motorhomes & large motorhomes (>8m & >4000kg)

SIZE:  150 pitches & 30 chalets

ACTIVITIES: playground, trampoline, swimming pool, local hiking routes, volley ball, table tennis, table football

FACILITIES:  EHU, grocery shop, bar, snack takeaway, Wi-Fi, laundry, covered barbecue, motorhome services, public shuttle bus €, excursions €

Campeggio Monte Bianco “La Sorgente” is nestled in Val Veny in the Italian Alps, just ten minutes drive from the traditional alpine town of Courmayeur. You’re treated to dramatic mountain views whichever way you turn, it’s such a tranquil location – perfect for lovers of the great outdoors. If you’re lucky, you might see deer or chamois on a dawn or dusk walk just minutes for the campsite.

The facilities are good. There’s a playground, small swimming pool, and plenty of other activities for kids. You can also rent bikes or hike directly out onto the nearby trails . There’s a well-stocked little shop and they provide evening meals, but it’s basic mountain fare, so don’t expect anything gourmet.

The walk up to Lake Combal directly from the campsite is well-marked and easy enough for children too. There’s a Rifugio that serves lunch with some of my favourite views of the whole area. Make time to climb a bit higher to Lago Miage, a beautiful glacial lake which, sadly, may not be around for people to visit for much longer.

The campsite is only open during the summer months and, because it’s on the Tour of Mont Blanc Trail , it’s always a good idea to book your pitch in advance.

Two different pool complexes means there’s always space to splash, and the two waterslides are fun without being too over the top. The spa area is quiet and relaxing with several saunas, an infinity pool looking out over the sea, and a rooftop sun deck.

A short bus trip to the water taxi stop makes it easy to get to Venice in half an hour. We enjoyed alternating Venice sight-seeing with days lounging at the beachside bar or the spa, while our son loved the freedom to run around and play.

With restaurants and a supermarket in the village, you can cook if you want to, but you don’t have to – every restaurant has a takeaway option. It’s a big site, so bring scooters or bikes if you can, though there’s a mini-train that you can catch if you’re tired. It made an ideal way to see Venice and for us, and is the best family camping in Italy .

Park Albatros Village, San Vicenzo

A DDRESS: Località Pineta di Torrenuova, 57027 San Vincenzo, Livorno

OPEN:  21st May – 20th September

SIZE:  200 pitches & 100+ chalets and a hotel

ACTIVITIES:  playground, rental bikes €, multi-sports field, crazy golf €, table tennis table, 3000m2 water park with slides, heated indoor pool

FACILITIES:  EHU, fresh bread, supermarket, snack bar, takeaway meals, pizzeria, restaurants, laundry, motorhome services, water & waste within 15m of pitch, wifi, security

Park Albatross Village is our family’s all-time favourite campsite. We stayed in a wooden clad cabin with covered decking set on a pretty tree lined path.

The site has six pools to choose from, including a water chute for kids, fountains to play in and slippy domes which everyone wants to climb (with varying degrees of success!).

In the evenings huge pizzas are cooked in traditional wood ovens and markets stalls set up on site, for trinket and souvenir shopping. Live music is played on stage, and cocktails are available for sipping in the open-air courtyard, under a fairy-lit canopy.

The absolute best thing about our stay was being in the camp for one of the many Saints’ days. Tables were laid out along what felt like the entire length of the site for a communal meal. The wine flowed and the entertainment went on into the night.

The campsite is perfect to soak up the culture and lifestyle of Tuscany; it’s easy to catch a train into Rome or Pisa from San Vincenzo. The pretty Tuscan hill town of Lucca with its 16th Century ramparts and cobbled central square is only a short drive away. The whole experience was magical.

SUITABLE FOR : Tents, caravans, motorhomes & large motorhomes (>8m & >4000kg)

If you want to go camping in Sardinia and experience its magical beaches, then  Camping Village Tavolara  is the place for you. Conveniently, it is in north-western Sardinia, 13km (25minutes) from the port of Olbia and Olbia’s airport. The campsite is inviting because it is only 500m from the enchanting beach of Porto Taverna and it is close to the sensational Isola Tavolara. It gets its name from this island, and it is a spectacular sight.

The campsite is welcoming, the staff are friendly, and they go out of their way to make sure you’re happy and know what services and facilities the campsite has. The setting is beautiful, as you are surrounded by nature. Sardinia can be hot, yet the campsites are shaded and surrounded by hedges for privacy. It feels like you have space and privacy, which is unusual when you are camping. There is a separate area for parking, which means that the campsite is car-free and quiet. The staff drive around on golf buggies to keep the noise level down, which allows for a pleasant stay.

It is also very flat, which is perfect for those who are pitching their tents. There are so many exciting things going on, and the facilities are incredible. You can play a range of sports, eat traditional Italian and Sardinian food at the restaurant and have a relaxing drink at the bar. There is also a lot of entertainment, where you can expect discos and theatre shows from mid-June to mid-September.

Sardinia is famous for its beaches, and next to the campsite there is one of its best. You can reach the sandy beach within a 10-minutes walk, but the campsite offers free shuttle services that are prompt and reliable. You will find clear and sparkling shallow water overlooking Tavolara Island with its chalky cliffs.

If you’re looking for a pit stop between the U.K. and Southern Europe, Camping Kaul in northern Luxembourg is the perfect place. Located about four hours drive from both Calais and Hook of Holland, this lovely little site is a great place to break the journey.

Camping Kaul offers a mix of tent, caravan and motorhome pitches as well as various glamping options. Arrival dates and lengths of stay are flexible, even in high season. There’s a restaurant, play area and free access to an outdoor swimming pool. There’s also a  great little bike track and a supermarket within walking distance.

We loved how small the site was which meant our children could explore most of it independently on their bikes. We stayed in a chalet with a spacious veranda overlooking the site. Cars have to remain in the car park after you’ve unpacked so it feels very safe and peaceful. Our children said it was the best part of our four week  European road trip .

Camping Kaul is a brilliant campsite if you’re looking to explore a beautiful part of Northern Europe. Set on the edge of the town of Wiltz, Camping Kaul is surrounded by the lush green woodland of the Luxembourg Ardennes. There are empty roads through the forests to explore and plenty of interesting towns and villages to visit.

Glamp outdoor camp veluwe.

A DDRESS:  Krimweg 140C, 7351 TM Hoenderloo

OPEN:  23rd April – 30th September

SUITABLE FOR: no touring pitches, this is a full on glamping site

SIZE:  unknown

ACTIVITIES:  ranger paths for kids, mini golf, woodland setting and nature reserve, indoor playground, outdoor playground, bike and walking routes, indoor and outdoor pools, table tennis

FACILITIES:  mini-market, BBQ points, bike rental, restaurant, bar, takeaway, fully equipped tents, laundry service, wifi, kids club

The Netherlands is full of amazing campsites. But if you’re looking for one in the most beautiful areas of the country and a truly unique glamping experience?  Glamp Outdoor Camp Veluwe  should be your choice.

The Veluwe is one of the most popular areas among locals to withdraw in nature, so you’ll find many lodges, cabins, tiny houses and campsites in the Veluwe area . It’s home to many national parks, including the well-known National Park Hoge Veluwe. The park is one of the highlights of any visit to The Netherlands, if only for its unique museum in the heart of the park: the Kröller-Müller Museum. This museum was founded by an extravagant couple with the same name to house their immense collection of modern art. As the big cities already had plenty of museums and they wanted to give their visitors a unique experience, they choose the Veluwe as its location. The museum has the second-largest collection of Van Gogh paintings, especially from Van Goghs early period.

Glamp Outdoor Camp is located right in between all that natural splendour. It was founded in 2020, when many locals were looking for a place to stay locally and festival glamping tents were widely available because of the canceled festivals. The result was this stunning glamping camp at the Veluwe.

The glamping tents are pitched on a heather field between the forests. The tents are Dutch glamping festival tents and vary in looks, amount of beds and comfort. The most luxurious tents even have their own glamping bathroom, though others use the common facilities in the center of the camp. All tents are far apart from one another to experience nature to the fullest.

As Glamp Outdoor Camp is located between the forests and fields, you can make small hikes in the area close to it. You don’t even need to drive yourself to one of the nature reserves or national parks in the area. If you’d like to do so anyway, you might want to visit the stunning area at Radio Kootwijk, an astonishing art nouveau building in the middle of nowhere with beautiful natural surroundings.

The Veluwe is known for its nature, but it also has big cities like Arnhem and Apeldoorn and charming Dutch villages like Zutphen. All three are worth a visit. If you’re into history and royalty, you might want to visit one of the many castles in the Veluwe. Castle Rosendael is a beautiful option and the former royal palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn is a top choice as well.

Skagen camping as.

A DDRESS:  Kjerkveien 45 Ramberg, 8380

SIZE:  50+ pitches & 1 cabin and 5 rooms

ACTIVITIES:  beach access, surfing, stand up paddle, hiking trails, wilderness!

FACILITIES:  laundry, BBQ areas, motorhome services, EHU, wifi

The arctic circle may not sound like a great place to camp but a few nights spent up between the 68th and 69th parallels is an epic experience that you will absolutely love. And it is nowhere near as cold as you might think. Lofoten, at the north end of Norway is a spectacularly beautiful destination and there are several amazing campsites that you can stay at but the pick of the bunch is  Skagen Camping AS .

As cool campsites go, this one is up there, sitting right on Skagsanden beach which would look more at home somewhere in Southeast Asia. The white sand and blue water are incredible and it is hard to believe you are in the arctic circle as you walk along this beach. The campsite is also surrounded by mountains making it one of the most scenic places to camp in Europe.

You can actually camp here year-round if you don’t mind facing extreme cold weather and snow in the winter but we recommend avoiding this and going in the summer. The summer temperatures are actually fairly warm and you can comfortably spend a few nights camping in a tent.

The surrounding area is full of amazing things to do and Lofoten is one of the most beautiful places in the world. You can surf in the arctic waters on Skagsanden beach, right in front of the campsite which is a very cool experience. There are endless epic hikes nearby, one of the best being Festvagtind which overlooks the broken islands of Henningsvaer. You can also go in search of more amazing beaches with tropical looking white sand and blue water like Rorvikstranda, Kvalvika beach and Haukland beach.

If you do want to venture here in the winter there are plenty of winter activities to enjoy as well. While much colder, the surf is much better in the winter, you can ski and snowboard and this is when the Northern Lights are at their most visible.

Being able to camp in a place this beautiful that is in the arctic circle is an absolutely amazing experience and one we highly recommend.

Kamp soca, soca valley.

A DDRESS: Soča 8, 5232 Soča,

OPEN:  1st April to 31st october

SIZE:  200 pitches & 6 wooden houses

ACTIVITIES:  sauna, fishing, river beach, kayaking, playground, games room, table tennis table, hiking routes, cycling routes

FACILITIES:  EHU, fresh bread, wifi, dog friendly, snack bar, pizzeria, bar, communal BBQ

If you love to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in nature when you go camping, you will love  Kamp Soca .

The campsite runs alongside the Soca River in the stunning Soca Valley. Surrounded by the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park, the nearest small town is Trenta, about 10km away.

The large campsite has around 200 pitches and is suitable for tents, motorhomes, caravans, and hikers, with a small number of cabins available. The campsite offers all the facilities you need including camp kitchens, laundry, toilet and shower facilities.

This is a peaceful and relaxed campsite – perfect for soaking up the tranquillity of the surrounding mountains, but not for those looking for a lot of organised activities or entertainment.

You are spoilt for choice in terms of things to add to your Slovenia itinerary when you are based here.

The river is a major attraction, and you may find it hard to do much else. The water is icy cold year-round, but many days can be spent swimming, tubing and leaping off rocks into the crystal-clear blue water.

If you can drag yourself away from the river, the famous Soca Trail passes by the campsite. If you are an avid hiker you can walk the entire 25km trail. You can also opt for a shorter section as it winds along the river and through the surrounding forests. Buses pass by the campsite and make a one way hike possible.

There are also several gorgeous falls and gorges to visit in the area including Kozjak and Boka waterfalls and the beautiful Tolmin Gorge.

If you have time, the area is well serviced by adventure tour agencies who can help you plan white water rafting, kayaking, cycling, and hiking tours of the area.

When you are ready to leave, the drive up and over the nearby historic Vrsic Pass is a must. With 50 hairpin turns and views to die for, it is the highest mountain pass in Europe and one of the best things to do in the area.

Kamp Soca is a campsite you may find yourself returning to again and again to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors in Slovenia.

Camp Zlatorog, Bohinj

A DDRESS:  Ukanc 5, 4265 Bohinjsko jezero

OPEN:  1st May to 30th September

SIZE:  250 pitches & 15 mobile homes (pitches are not marked)

ACTIVITIES:  lake swimming and beach, fishing, kayaking €, canoeing €, stand up paddle €, sailing (trailer slope) own boats permitted, kids group, entertainment programme, table tennis, cycling and hiking routes, excursion programme,

FACILITIES:  wifi, dog friendly, fresh bread, restaurant, snack bar, pizzeria, takeaway, bar, communal BBQ, bike and kayak hire, EHU, motorhome facilities

Hugging the shoreline of the mesmerising Lake Bohinj in stunning Triglav National Park in Slovenia you’ll find Camp Zlatorog . This is not your typical campsite with perfectly manicured patches of grass to put your tent on, but if you enjoy being out in nature it is something way better.

At Camp Zlatorog there are no marked pitches, instead, they have areas where you are free to pitch your tent or park your caravan wherever you want. This means you can camp right by the shore of the lake if you want, possibly shaded by some trees, and watch the sunset over the lake and surrounding mountaintops from inside your tent. This doesn’t mean that the campsite lacks facilities though. You’ll still find everything you need including a restaurant, wifi and a beach bar by the lake.

While camping out in nature is awesome, the real appeal of this campsite is its location that offers countless opportunities for activities in the area. There are obvious ones like hiking in the mountains or swimming in the lake. But the campsite also rents out paddle boards and kayaks to take out onto the lake, and there is a panoramic boat that takes you from the jetty at the campsite to the other side of the lake.

Looking for something more adrenaline-fuelled? Then take the cable car that starts right next to the campsite up to Mount Vogel. In winter Vogel is known for its ski fields, but in summer the mountain has a mountain bike park, a zip-line park, and one of the most spectacular paragliding take-off points in the country. Imagine jumping off the top of the mountain to then glide over Lake Bohinj and all its breath-taking surrounding scenery!

There are also cave systems to explore and plenty of awesome climbing spots to go rock climbing. If you still haven’t had enough, then opt for one of the tours the campsite organises, like a canyoning tour or a rafting tour on the Sava river that flows out from Lake Bohinj.

Bohinj is an outdoor lover’s paradise, and Camp Zlatorog truly completes the package.

One of the absolute best campsites in Spain is Camping Los Escullos . It is a large campsite with clean facilities. I have been several times with my tent, while there are plenty of caravans and motorhomes around too.

The campground is situated in the middle of the desert in Cabo de Gata national park, not far from the beach and breathtaking cliffs in Los Escullos. This is a great starting point for exploring the nature reserve as you are halfway between some of the best beaches in Cabo de Gata . Los Genoveses and Monsul beach are in one direction and the stunning Los Muertos beach on the other side.

The campsite has a little shop with all the basic you need to cook your own food, as well as a bar and restaurant where they do very good fish and chips once a week. There is a pool for anyone who doesn’t want to walk or cycle to the beach. If you have dogs, they are welcome too! This is a friendly campsite and the staff have always been very helpful and kind to me.

The campsite is spacious and very well looked after, the bungalows are recent and well equipped.  Pitches for tents and motorhomes are well maintained. Camping El Sur, Ronda, Andalucia***

A DDRESS: Carretera Ronda-Algeciras, Km 1.5, 29400 Ronda

SIZE: 113 pitches & 13 static mobiles for hire

ACTIVITIES: playground, mini-golf course, giant chess, ping-pong large field to play sports, boule, swimming pool

FACILITIES: EHU, fresh bread, grocery shop, snack bar, pizzeria, restaurant, bar, motorhome services, wifi, dog friendly

If you are looking for a great campsite in Andalusia, Spain, Camping El Sur is an excellent choice, especially for travelling families. Located next to the famous village of Ronda, Camping El Sur is a medium-sized campsite with plenty of amenities.

The pitches are large (70 to 100 square meters) and due to the beautiful almond, olive and oak trees, there is plenty of shade. Because the campsite is built upon a hill, the upper spots offer nice views of the surrounding countryside. Regarding the facilities, the toilets and showers blocks are well-maintained and clean.

There are lots of things to do close to Camping El Sur. With three nature reserves (Los Alcornocales, Sierra de Grazalema and Sierra de las Nieves) close by, it comes as no surprise that hiking opportunities are plentiful. There are lots of trails, both short and long so you can choose one that suits your family’s preference.

Located within walking distance of the campsite is the remarkable town of Ronda. This historic town is split in two by the deep El Tajo Gorge. On one side of the gorge, you’ll find the Old Town and on the other side is the New Town (new being a relative term here, as this part of town dates back to the 15th century).

The two parts of town are connected by the imposing Puento Neuvo, which was built in 1751. It took 42 years to build this bridge, but taking into account that it was constructed without any modern equipment, that’s quite an amazing achievement!

Ronda is a lovely place to spend a day with your family. Stroll around the plazas, explore the old Arabic Baths (Baños Arabes), visit a museum (such as the Casa Palacio Museo Lara), and admire the beautiful historic buildings. If you are traveling with teens, they can even stay at the pool at the campsite while you and your partner take your time exploring Ronda.

The region is rich in outdoors activities including hiking trails in the mountains,  nearby boating and rafting, parasailing and paragliding, and so many other outdoor activities. Nearby cable cars allow for campers to take the cars up to carless towns such as Murren. Maps with a variety of hiking paths are available at the cable car stations.

Camping in Europe. All you need to know for your perfect camping trip.

Europe is a country perfect for camping, roadtrip in a caravan or car. At every country you will find a camp with full equipment, parking places where you can sleep. But how does it actually work in such a camp? What to watch out for and what to prepare for? You’ll find it all in this article about camping.

Obsah článku

What is camping?

Probably you has built a classic tent already, a tent built at a festival or just somewhere near the forest. Sleeping outside, watching the stars, listen to the sounds of nightlife and swim in the river, so many people want to experience it in past years. They choose to travel by car, s top at a place they like and camp there for a while.

But camping itself is happening in camps . The campsite is an accommodation facility that allows visitors to stay in their own a tent, caravan, car, or rent a cottage or bungalow in the camp.

Each camp has showers and toilets, and their “luxury” is rated by stars as well as hotels.

camping trip europa

Not all camps are the same

There are different types of camps, for different types of people and requirements. During our roadtrip we tried a few and each had different rules, prices and a degree of luxury.

People go to camps during their trips mainly because of social facilities, water and electricity supplies, but for some people camping in caravans is a lifestyle.

Certainly now you are asking why you would pay for sleeping in a tent or in a car if you can do it anywhere. In some countries (such as Croatia) camping outside camps or “wild” camping is not allowed and even fined. In our case, we needed the most showers, because after a day of hiking, we did not want to jump into the 4 degree cold water. ?

What you need for camping

When it comes to camping, it is up to the comfort level that suits you . Tent and sleeping bag are the basics that will give you a peaceful night’s sleep. Another option is a van, a caravan with a bed.

In some camps you will find a kitchen, but you have to bring your own dishes . I suggest you have your own cooker and pot where you can prepare your warm food, anywhere in the camp (or on the road).

Another important thing is the c lassic can in which you always fill water supplies in the camp. We had an unusual composition that looked like Blobby from Hotel Transilvania. We have always filled it in the camp and have had drinking water for few more days.

camping trip europa

How does it work in a camp?

You can book a camp as well as any other accommodation in advance , but the advantage is that you can come and ask when you will arrive there. Out of high season , there is almost always a place to camp, but it is better to book it in advance during the high season (June and August).

How to find a camp?

The easiest thing to do is if you already have an itinerary and you know where you’re going. Some campsites offer accommodation reservations, for example, via Booking , some only have to be booked on their website.

If you decide to find camp in the evening when you find out that you need a shower, just simply google   “camp near me” and it will show you all the campsites that are near you, then you just have to choose the one you like.

Step by Step

Each camp has a reception . At the reception you book your place in the camp. You tell them your data on how many nights you want to stay, in what you sleep (caravan, tent, car). Interesting on campsites in Slovenia, for example, is that you pay when you leave the camp , not when you book it.

In many camps they have more luxurious places and standard places . Imagine a huge camp what have places with sea view in there, so these places will surely be above standard and therefore more expensive. At the reception, receptionist will show you a map that will indicate places that are more expensive and cheaper and you can choose.

The campsite locations are marked in two ways. On the map of the camp you will have marked places for a tent or car, what more reminds of parking places with lines around, which are marked with a number that will be assigned to you.

The other way you can choose any place you like and is empty and have your tent or care there.

camping trip europa

You pay per person in the camp. This price is fixed, mostly depending on when you are traveling, if it is in or out of the season, because the price list is different. Furthermore, a tourist tax is payable as well as in any other accommodation. Included in camp price are showers, toilets, drinking water, place and wifi.

Furthermore, prices vary depending on where you sleep. If you have a caravan, the price will be higher because they expect you to refill your water and electricity supplies. If you only have a tent, the price will be cheaper.

We slept in our Tupac (meaning a car with a name) and we paid the same as we would pay for a tent, because we took up one place, but we are not as big as a caravan. ?

Tip: If you are planning to sleep in a car in a campsite, it is better to say at the reception that you will sleep in the tent. No one checks if you really sleep in the tent, but the word “car” can make you pay more (as if you are in a caravan).

Another item that differs in each camp is electricity . It can be included in the price, or you can pay for it. We were in camps where people could charge their phones for free at the reception, but also where they asked for money.

There is wifi in every camp. In some still have your own special password, in some only at the reception, in some without restrictions. We were a little worried about this during our road trip in Slovenia, because route planning is now easier with wifi. But even in the mountain camps had wifi, so don’t worry.

Camping is saving your money

Camping is a rediscovered style of travel . People go to camps for months, get to know each other faster, because you feel like at the festival there. All together in one meadow, you watch the stars and you all looks same in the morning, sleepy and tousled .  At the same time, in some countries camping is the cheaper alternative of accommodation.

Wild camping

If you don’t want to invest in camps and just want to stop your car and sleep overnight anywhere , I recommend app Park4night , in which people add places where you can  sleep, stop, or even spend a few days. You will find rest areas, parking lots, forest roads, but also places with great views. And if you find nice places, you can also add them there and join this community .

Have you tried camping? Let me know in the comments if you liked it or you would rather go to normal bed. 🙂

The Best Guide to Camping in Europe

The Best Guide To Camping In Europe

What camping is, Europeans had known about it since the late 19th century, when an enterprising resident of the British Isles opened the first commercial campground for recreational purposes. Since then, organized camping has grown in popularity. Today, camping is a favorite family vacation activity for Europeans and North Americans, and camping in Europe is evidenced by the International Camping and Caravanning Association, founded more than a century ago. You will learn more about The Best Guide To Camping In Europe by LCNOutdoors article.

How About Camping In Europe? Experience Sharing

The europe camping overview.

Camping in Europe is a very civilized activity, even if it means staying away from the usual facilities.

  • They are not just places with marked tents. These are entire complexes where everything has been thought out in detail. Europeans know a thing or two about camping.
  • You can find all the campsites on the website and even book them if you wish.
  • There are showers and washbasins, and most importantly, every tent has electricity.
  • Campsites in Europe provide entertainment for children.

In countries such as Europe and America, there are even special camping associations and various organizations that work exclusively. Camping is a very common phenomenon and a very convenient way for people to engage in outdoor activities. By the way, athletes do not miss any opportunity to use this kind of tourism. Mountain climbers, cyclists, divers – many people use this being in the right place. Exactly this, and not the old-fashioned “three tents and a fire.”

Camping experience on the Internet

Although, I don’t know how popular this resort is in Europe. A huge number of camping sites spread across European countries. This is a screenshot of Google Maps, which I made by searching for “Italian Camping.” According to my experience, there are more campsites in real life because there are not many campsites advertised online.

Then, if you look at the screenshot of the map, the density of the camp is sporadic, and if you leave the coastline, the helpful information will be reduced.

Nevertheless, I am by no means advocating a well-planned and “unusual” type of itinerary. What I did is this. I opened the google map and started searching for campsites in the area where my free route went. Therefore, I got a list of camping locations within 50 kilometers.

Then I clicked on the campsite icon of the necessary place on the map of the local camping APP, entered the place’s homepage, and read the price. If I am satisfied with the price and location, I will go to Google Maps and try to see if there are campsites in the listed areas on the satellite map.

How About Camping In Europe Experience Sharing

Modern camping culture

A modern camping site is a place where people who travel (mainly those who drive) can comfortably spend the night and get all the amenities. Hot showers, toilets, electricity, stores, a tent on a flat surface. In addition, the cost of accommodation using a tent is lower than the cost of the cheapest hotel.

No wonder Europeans like to travel to neighboring countries for a lower cost. Not once did I hear them say that sleeping in a tent is undignified. On the contrary, many told me that they wouldn’t trade anything for sleeping outdoors.

However, when you see the camping gear of any more or less advanced camping enthusiast, you will realize that he doesn’t need any hotel. There is an amazing camping culture in Europe, and developers are working hard to meet the demand for the best equipment. You can see an example of a tent in the photo far from the largest tent used by Europeans on vacation.

In these tents you can walk the whole height, they have several rooms, corridors, and kitchens. And note that it is very easy to set up such a tent, 2 people can cope with it in ten minutes, thanks to the clever stacking design. The price of such houses is quite affordable: from a few dozen to hundreds of euros. The rest of the equipment also arouses envy, where you and compact gas stove, inflatable beds, and a lot of different useful little things.

Not to mention that the camping sites are often in breathtaking places: nature reserves, seashores, high mountain valleys. It’s a great pleasure to be there, breathing clean air and watching the stars light up in the sky when it gets dark. Look at this photo. Do you still want to go to a four-star hotel? I think it has all ten stars.

Interesting camping

Another interesting point: since the average European doesn’t know there is such a thing as a summer house, many rent small Motorhomes at the campground for the whole summer and visit it on weekends. Sometimes people from northern countries spend the whole summer in campsites in the south; we met German and Norwegian pensioners who live this way in France and Italy. They did their best to settle in there, they brought their TVs and furniture and even managed to plant flower beds next to the caravans.

Planning before camping

Camping so intensively meant that we had complete freedom to move around Europe without the slightest bit of planning and would be guaranteed a comfortable and safe place to spend the night. Personally, this is an important factor for me. I hate pre-planning when I travel.

It’s cool to move around the country as far as you can see (within the itinerary) rather than following the direction of the track you’ve made at home. If you see an exciting castle on the horizon, why not turn that way? Even if you don’t have a campground map, asking a local can point you in that direction.

I’m always amazed at how friendly Europeans are to cyclists. I’ve cycled in almost every country in Southern Europe, and I’ve always encountered only the friendliest attitudes. There are even times when a person drops everything, gets in the car, and takes the traveler to the right place at the speed of a bike.

In addition to all the advantages of comfortable camping, there is another important consideration for cyclists. Exploring cities by bicycle is not very convenient. Visiting museums and other attractions is questionable: I strongly recommend not tying your bike to the door, even in the quietest of European countries.

Therefore, a convenient strategy is to head to the campground nearest the city center, leave your bike there, catch a bus, and take a quiet walk around the museum. There is usually a bus stop nearby, and the fare should be a few euros. There’s no need to worry about leaving your bikes at the campsite either. Secure them to a tree in a conspicuous place.

Sadly, there are no campsites a third of the time (there are too many inaccuracies, especially in southern Europe). I have learned to make such checks from unpleasant experiences when, after an exhausting day of walking, I find a muddy industrial site or a private development rather than a campsite with hot showers and a restaurant.

As a result, I was offered a fair number of cheap campsites that were randomly scattered along my route. Depending on the landscape I encountered and my mood, I could modify my route at will and knew I would find a place to spend the night within a few dozen kilometers.

In Europe, it is customary to charge per site, plus person. Therefore, an overnight stay for two people will cost less than one person. For our spend, we can use the restroom area. I would mention that in Italy, which is miserable in terms of tourism, they charge for hot water in the shower. In other countries, this also happens, but rather as an exception. You can also use the washing machine, which will cost several euros (including washing powder). It’s not cheap, but washing it by hand is not very impressive. For a few euros more, you can spin your washed clothes in a centrifuge.

Campsites are divided into at least three price levels, with little difference in the actual level of service. The more expensive units feature swimming pools and good locations. Sometimes, however, the high prices are not backed by anything other than the owners’ greed. Expensive campgrounds should be discounted because there are no positives for cyclists. The price for two people spending the night in their tent can go up to tens of euros! Must say “no”!

The medium price class is what we need. Camping is almost indistinguishable from its more expensive counterparts, but it turns out that the price per night here will be 20% lower. I think it’s normal if they ask for no more than a few dozen euros for a night for two in high season. Fortunately, there are more campsites like this in Europe, so you can always count on getting a reasonable price.

The ideal type of site for cyclists is the local, national municipal site. Unfortunately, they are few and far between and hardly ever advertised online, so you find them by accident. The prices for overnight stays may surprise seasoned campers: in high season, the absolute minimum price we paid was just a few euros for two people.

Yes, there won’t be a swimming pool or a convenience market, but you’re most likely to meet fellow cyclists at the municipal campsite. You can find scanned copies of paid cycling guides on the internet that definitely have the coordinates of such places. Highly recommended!

The most expensive country in Southern Europe for tourists is Italy. The cheapest camping destinations are France and Portugal. I don’t know much about the Midlands or northern latitudes, but I’ve heard that camping prices in Norway make your hair stand on end. Prices are heavily influenced by seasonality and can vary up to 100%.

As you can see, July-September is the most expensive month. From April-June, it’s ideal for traveling around Southern Europe. If it’s not a rainy year, these months will be moderately warm, the nights won’t be too cold, and there aren’t too many campers yet. However, during the high season, campgrounds can become quite crowded, especially on weekends.

Having said all these great things about camping, I have to be honest about the nasty stuff. Unfortunately, having a spoonful of tar can ruin a biker’s vacation, especially if they are inexperienced in choosing a campground. The biggest (and probably only important) downside is that in high season, you’ll have a lot of people, unlike you, who have done 100 miles in one day to get here and rock! Here, you’ll have a lot of people. It can be an unpleasant surprise to find a group of young people camping more than 10 feet away from your tent and not planning to sleep at night.

I agree that Europe camping is special

It is not that bad!

In addition, officials allow for lawlessness until 12 p.m., meaning that a “concert” is happening in the campground that day: music screaming at full volume. Then it’s up to the audience. If there are not many teenagers, then you can sleep. But it’s still not very pleasant because I wanted to go to bed at 9:00 and get up early tomorrow, but it ended after midnight.

Of course, not all places are bad. We had some lovely campgrounds. At one point, near the town of Alcobaça in Portugal, we found a strange campsite that wasn’t even on the map. It was right in the forest, very clean, quiet, and not very crowded. It turned out that the campsite owner was French and all the people living there were also French.

We got a little anxious, and we felt like we were in paradise. We felt like we were in paradise. We had planned to just spend the night and keep driving, but when we saw a place like this, we decided to stay a few nights and get a good night’s sleep. By the way, the French have confirmed the title of a cultured country, and we didn’t notice a single noisy campsite while traveling in France. Spain and Italy were worse. If it was possible to cajole with the Italians, they would calm down after a few words. The number would not pass with the Spaniards.

How to choose a campsite

But if you choose the right campsite, you can get a good night’s sleep. A few notes are needed as follows.

  • The closer the campsite is to a town, coastline or attraction, the more people you will meet when you are out and about. Look for campsites that are farther away from these locations, as this will save you money as well.
  • Look for council-run or “family-friendly” campgrounds. The former is self-explanatory, while the latter implies that it is a family business. These places don’t cater to drunken parties, boisterous animation, etc., unlike commercial campgrounds whose purpose is to pack your bags.
  • Pay close attention to the national makeup of vacationers, though the number of cars. You can find “Germany,” “United Kingdom,” “Spain” and other camps in each country. The best neighbors are Germans, French, and Dutch. God bless you not to be drunk at the campsite with British teenagers without parental supervision. They will do in the evening what they do at home every weekend.
  • If the campsite is the only campsite in the correct area and is in a “risk zone,” don’t pitch your tent next to a sanitary area. There will always be traffic and noise, day or night. Go to the farthest corner, so the animators don’t disturb your sleep. Evaluate campers; it’s best to pitch your tent next to someone with a family, whether or not there are noisy children. Typically, they will go to bed after 11:00, while the merrymakers will stay up until dawn.
  • Outdoor campgrounds are not exactly popular with partygoers. However, it is very peaceful and quiet in the mountains and nature reserves. When making your itinerary, please put them in your navigator first.

If you follow these simple rules, you can easily avoid the aforementioned horrors and enjoy peace and quiet.

I hope I was able to convince you that, contrary to popular belief, traveling in Europe can be very inexpensive, and in some cases almost free. For this, you need common sense, no pomp and circumstance in everyday life. The last two concepts are the most difficult. The good news is that your bike will get your mind going in the right direction, you must shower every day, and rose petals in bed are no longer a problem.

In the south, a cheap campsite costs a few euros or over ten euros per person. It depends on the country and the season. If you have a gas stove, you can cook yourself a delicious meal with high calories for no more than $20 or less per day.

If you’re doing it for the road itself, rather than visiting museums and attractions, you won’t live on more than $1,000 per month. That’s a pretty comfortable budget with no extreme savings.

Go, travel!

If you are still in the 64% of people who have never left the US, I suggest you squeeze in the 36%. I agree that Europe is special. So many different cultures, languages, and traditions come together in a relatively small area that is very interesting to observe.

Please don’t believe people who say Europe is tedious and expensive. Veer a little off the tourist trail, and you’ll find that Europe is steeped in its fantastic history, and every stone tells the curious more than they could read in a dozen books. Even if you don’t share my enthusiasm for cycling, just rent a bike and ride to your favorite places. Thanks to the campgrounds, this can be a very reasonably priced trip.

As people come to the campground to rest, they should arrange the camping area with special care. This part of the campground is intended to provide recreation and leisure activities for campers. Here, as well as in the domestic zone, the level can be different, depending on the camping location, the country where the campground is located (for example, camping in Finland is more expensive than in the USA), the cost of renting a place. By the way, campgrounds, like hotels, have “stars.” The more stars you get, the more comfortable your stay will be. The best campgrounds offer swimming pools, mini-golf courses, restaurants, mini-markets, etc., in addition to the standard playgrounds.

From the mountains to the sea – this could be the motto of this beautiful European campervan route. Starting in Zürich , the biggest city in Switzerland, you will admire the old buildings in the city center, eat the most delicious cheese fondue, and stroll around the lake. Besides its picturesque mountains and lakes, Switzerland offers beautiful cities as well. On this road trip, you will also explore Lucerne and Bern , the country’s capital.

From Bern, you will head south and enjoy some Italian travel experiences . Turin , which lies in the region of Piemont, is well known for its outstanding architecture and cuisine. Besides many other things to do in Turin , the city is the ideal place to slow down in an Italian café and take photos of the aesthetic baroque buildings. Milan , the international center of fashion and design, as well as Bologna , the vivid and historic town, are other stops on your way through Italy. After spending several days strolling through pretty alleys and eating pizza, you will end your road trip to Venice , one of the most popular places to visit in Northern Italy . Even though the city is considered to be rather expensive, there are quite a few tips for visiting Venice on a budget and enjoying your trip to the fullest!

4. Austria and Budapest

Route: Innsbruck – Zell am See – Hallstatt – Graz – Vienna – Budapest

Suggested duration: 2-3 weeks

Overall length: 900 km (11 hours of driving)

This Europe campervan route takes you across Austria to the Hungarian capital Budapest. On your way through the mountains, you will experience a city break in Innsbruck , explore the ski region Zell am See, and visit the picturesque town of Hallstatt. On your way to Hallstatt, you can also make a stop in Salzburg, the city which is famous for the great musician Mozart. In both Graz and Vienna, you will find numerous beautiful Renaissance and Baroque-style buildings. Vienna, the vivid capital of Austria, will welcome you with many bars and restaurants as well as a beautiful castle (Schönbrunn Palace). From Vienna, it is only a 2.5-hour drive to the next capital – Budapest. Must-do experiences in Budapest include bathing in the famous thermal pools (Széchenyi Baths), going on a typical Danube river cruise, and walking across the Chain Bridge.

5. French Rivera and Catalonia

I recommend you continue your trip alongside the French Rivera by exploring the cities of Marseille and Montpellier. Once arrive in Spain, you can enjoy the party life in Lloret de Mar before heading to Barcelona, where you have the chance to visit the world-famous Sagrada Familia, try all the Spanish food, relax at the beach, or go shopping in the city center. The city in southern Catalonia offers the perfect combination of ancient culture, lovely beaches, and adventurous amusement parks.

The vibrant cities of Frankfurt and Mainz should also be on your Germany Bucket List .

Continuing your trip along the Rhine River, you will not only drive through the country’s main wine regions but also discover historic castles. After you have discovered all the things to do in Cologne, the city with the iconic cathedral, you will cross the border to the harbor city Rotterdam in the Netherlands. In The Hague, you will finally reach the sea. Ending your trip to Amsterdam , the country’s lively capital, you will be amazed by the variety of colorful markets, lovely canals, narrow houses, and art museums.

9. Paris and South England

Route: Paris – Rouen – Brussels – Antwerp – London – Brighton – Bournemouth – Stonehenge – Bristol

Overall length: 1300 km (17 hours of driving, including ferry)

Guide to Tent Camping in Europe

By: Author Robyn Robledo

camping trip europa

We’ve camped in a lot of places in the United States from State and National campgrounds to private campgrounds to BLM campgrounds.  When we decided to full time travel, we kind of felt like experts when it came to camping and road trips.  However, camping in Europe is very different and being an expert at pitching a tent, leveling an RV, or building a fire aren’t the skills I needed when it came to camping with our kids in a new continent.

Instead, it was our adaptability, flexibility, and a sense of humor that made our adventures camping in Europe a success.  Here are some things that will help prepare you for camping in Europe.

Things To Know Before Visiting Croatia

While there are some generalizations that can be made about camping in Europe, like how they charge per person at campgrounds, each country’s campgrounds are slightly different.

  • In France and Spain, campgrounds are the most like the US.
  • In Germany , for example, they are very strict about prices and charge per person (this is a bummer for big families) but the bathrooms are always extremely clean.
  • In Croatia , most campgrounds are practically  resorts  with restaurants, bars, and swimming pools.
  • In the UK and Ireland, campgrounds are usually just people’s farms or backyards where you can pitch a tent (bathrooms aren’t as luxurious in these though).
  • In Norway , campgrounds are in beautiful, raw nature and have modern campers kitchens/shelters but can be expensive in the high season.

Overall, here are some tips to help you know what to expect from tent camping in Europe:

Camp Cooking

Having my coffee right when I wake up was high on my priority list and cooking our own meals not only saved us a lot of money, it also kept us healthier by eating more local produce.

The first thing we did when we stepped off a plane (in Norway, Ireland, and again in Germany) was to find a camping/sporting good store that sells propane canisters .  This wasn’t as easy as we hoped it would be, but in the end, we were able to find them. Use google maps and search “sporting good stores” or “camping equipment”.

camping in norway, campers kitchen,

We did get spoiled in Norway though, where most campgrounds have very nice campers kitchens (some with stoves, ovens, pots, pans, and refrigerators).  If you get in a bind, most campgrounds sell very cheap bread in the morning .  Here’s the essentials that we brought:

  • a set of pans
  • a large spoon and knife
  • 4 plates/bowls/mugs
  • a spork for each of us
  • a jet boil coffee press
  • a wine/bottle opener
  • 2 coffee mugs

Campground bathrooms/dishwashing facilities.

Almost all the campgrounds in Europe have a central toilet block where you can find toilets, showers, and a dish washing station.  Overall, the facilities are much cleaner than anything you find in the States , but it’s good to be ready for the occasional surprise.  For instance, in Luxembourg and the Netherlands, you have to supply your own toilet paper .  Imagine our confusion as we arrive at a campground in Luxembourg late one evening after driving 4 hours through Germany and there isn’t any toilet paper (or soap) in the bathrooms.

Many campgrounds aren’t in developed areas, so running across the street to a grocery store wasn’t an option, but luckily the campground had some to buy.

camping trip europa

Depending on the size of the campground, you may be sharing the facilities with a lot of other people and cultures that are very comfortable walking around (ahem) not dressed .

Some places, especially in Germany, include hot showers in the nightly price , but it was more common in all the other areas to have to buy shower tokens to get a hot shower .

All the campgrounds had dish washing stations with hot running water, which made cooking our own meals very easy.

Tip: If you choose to car camp, bring a soft cooler like this with you to keep your food cold as you travel. A soft cooler is better in case you don’t have room in your rental car for a hard sided one since cars tend to be smaller in Europe.

Europeans have a high standard of cleanliness.  In all the shared areas there are squeegees for the shower floors, toilet brushes next to each toilet, and you are expected to always leave the dishwashing area spotless when you are done.

Campground Utilities

Unlike the U.S. where campsites often have electricity, water source, a picnic table, and sometimes a hole to dump sewer, European campsites or “pitches” are quite bare .

BTW- If you are traveling in a camper (RV) in Europe, you dump your grey and black tanks in a totally different way than how you do in the States. Your toilet has a cartridge that you have to manually take out and pour into a dump station or toilet (it’s kinda gross so be prepared). For your gray water (sink water), you drive over a large grate in the floor and open the valve to let thte water just pour into the grate. This part is easy.

camping trip europa

The campgrounds are more communal and rely on using and sharing the dishwashing area, water filling hoses, and canister dumping stations.  If you pay for an individual site with electricity, it is usually a shared electrical block.

There are also no generators on motorhomes (good to reduce noise if you”re tenting it), but electricity is cheap and widely available.

camping trip europa

On a side note, a lot of campgrounds also are caravan parks with mobile homes or trailers with permanent residents.  At first, this felt a little too much like being in a trailer park back home, but everyone is very nice and typically we are just looking for comfortable facilities for the night, so a little flexibility can carry you a long way towards making it an enjoyable experience.  A lot of the campgrounds cater to long term residents, so check their website if you would prefer staying in campgrounds geared for over-nighters or passer-byers.

Europeans love to camp, which means you are always surrounded by like-minded individuals .  Most campers, regardless of whether you are in Europe or the States, are also flexible, adaptable, and have a good sense of humor and they tend to go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and help in any way they can .  You’d also be surprised that many Europeans have very little interaction with Americans, so smile, be polite, and say hi .  You’d be amazed how similar we all are!  And who knows, you may just meet your next best friend!

The Essential Packing List for Your Europe Camping Trip

Kenny Dunn

Travel this summer has changed for many as COVID has spread across the globe. Less flights, less hotels, less meals out and many people are choosing to stay closer to home and explore the serenity and even isolation of camping.

Even before this year, camping has been very popular among Europeans. You won’t find a shortage of where and how to camp in Europe! Beautiful deserts, beach or lake fronts, mountains and forests. With a varied landscape that includes everything from glorious coastlines to towering mountains, this easily accessible continent is also one of the most impressive for an unbelievable campaign experience!

Camping in Europe is a wonderful way to explore the many countries of this continent, and whether you travel by car, RV or by rail, the main attractions are easy to get to. What you will need is a plan of where to go, and also a collection of camping essentials for your backpack!

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-4G3N6pz0_/?igshid=3vxk5zhks45d

Here’s some camping locations in Europe to help inspire you, but then you’ve got to think about what are the essentials you need to pack for your European camping trip? We’ve put together a list for you, so get these items together and you’re ready to go!

The Essential Camping Packing List

The following are items we consider absolutely essential for your camping trip. You will, of course, have sourced the tent and a suitable backpack so we will not dwell on those:

Mobile Phone and Power Pack

You need your mobile phone with you at all times. You may be getting away from it all, but there can be emergency situations in which a phone will be vital.

You or one of your party may have a fall, for example, and need medical help, and a phone can get you seen to and found quickly when you are in a remote area. Also, we recommend you take a power pack – or more than one – that is kept fully charged, as you may be in locations where you have no access to mains electricity. If you want to splurge, you can also buy a solar charger or solar power pack to charge your phone.

Torch or Flashlight

Make sure you have a portable light source as you may be staying in places where it gets very dark at night. It’s not just to see with but also to be seen, so ensure you have one that is suitably powerful for the purpose. Also, ensure you have spare batteries if it is battery powered, as you never know when you may need them.

Cooking Appliances

You may eat out at some stages during your journey, but there is nothing like cooking for yourself in the great wide open, especially when you’re in a beautiful location.

The modern portable stove is a long way removed from those you may remember and can be very compact and light when not in use, but also very capable and easy to use when operational. Look also for knives and forks, disposable plates and even camping tables that are surprisingly small and useful.

Change of Clothes

You may be going to Spain or Portugal, or perhaps the countries in central Europe like Italy that can get very hot. That doesn’t mean you’ll be blessed with great weather, so take waterproofs with you whatever the forecast. There’s always a chance of storms across Europe and they can be very severe.

Sleeping Bags

We recommend you spend a sensible amount on a quality sleeping bag, as cheap examples are uncomfortable and don’t always provide enough insulation for cooler evenings, especially when campaign in the mountains.

There are some very good and well-known brands to choose from so it is certainly worth checking online reviews for sleeping bags and choosing one that suits your budget.

While your phone will have a camera, it’s worth investing in one that is dedicated to the job, as there will be photo occasions that really deserve a decent picture. This may not seem like an essential, but you will miss it if you don’t tale one! Like when joining one of our food tours , you want to hold on to these memories forever!

That’s a few essentials for your camping trip to start with, all you need to do now is check out the places you can visit and start arranging your trip to or within Europe!
