Hawaii Weather in December

A typical December day in Hawaii sees temperatures sitting in the low 80s. December is one of the best times to see poinsettias in their natural habitat. The evenings can get a little chilly, and it is not uncommon to see the temperatures dip into the upper 60s. Although it might seem a little cold for the Pacific, it is nothing a light jacket or sweater won’t take care of quickly.

December is the rainiest month in Hawaii. However, it still does not pose much of an issue. Showers tend to come in short little bursts, lasting no more than about 10 minutes. You will want to carry an umbrella or lightweight rain jacket with you—just in case. However, in most cases, rain tends to fall at night in Hawaii.

If the rain worries you, consider booking your stay on the leeward side of the islands, as they tend to be drier. You can also look at the islands with the least rain in December, which include Big Island and Maui .

You will also find the ocean warm and inviting this time of year. December is ideal for water sports lovers and those who want to feel the Pacific Ocean underfoot when strolling along the beach. Traveling any time of the year in the mountains or climbing to the summit of the highest volcanoes can get quite chilly. If your excursions include higher elevations, bring a jacket and long pants.

Airfares can also see a rise, but this is typical for all airfares at this time of year, regardless of your destination.

Hawaii Events & Highlights in December

The Christmas season tends to see an increase in events throughout the islands. It is also a wonderful time of year, with towns, major shopping areas, hotels, and homes decorated to mark the festive season. You can experience a Hawaiian Christmas with exciting luaus, sumptuous Christmas feasts, and even a Christmas Eve cruise on one of the islands' many dinner cruises. You can also visit malls and significant hotels as each celebrates unique annual holiday events. Common community events might include festive light displays , garden festivities, visits with “Santa Marty,” and even unexpected snow displays.

A few words of advice when it comes to Christmas travel:

  • This is the busiest time of year, so no matter what you plan, if your vacation is during the Christmas holidays, call ahead to make reservations.
  • Events around the holidays can vary greatly, so confirm all events by phone or email with the venue.
  • Some venues and destinations might be closed over the holidays, so call ahead to ask about holiday hours to avoid disappointment.

Hawaii in December: A Complete Guide

Most travelers don’t visit Hawaii when the weather’s best here – rather, when it’s at its worst everywhere else. This is why the busy season is usually from mid-December through March or mid-April. If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii, the last two weeks of December (around Christmas) are the best time to schedule your vacation. However, this is also one of the most expensive times to travel to Hawaii.

Note on Related Articles:   This article is part of a series of articles to help our readers decide which month is best to visit the Hawaiian Islands. If you are thinking of going to Hawaii in a different month, please check out our other articles listed at the end of this one.

December Weather in Hawaii

You can pretty much always expect the weather in Hawaii to be comfortably warm. Daytime temperatures usually reach the low 80s while in the evenings, they tend to stay around the mid to upper 60s (Fahrenheit). A light sweater or jacket is recommended in the evening.

In most places on Hawaii it rains quiet a lot during this time, so we recommend bringing a rain jacket and umbrella with you.

Average Temperatures

The year-round temperature doesn’t differ much. When you’re at the beach during the day, the temperature can stay around 78°F and become about 10°F cooler at night. However, how warm it is on any given day really depends on where you are on the island.

Water Temperatures

Hawaii attracts a lot of water sports lovers in December because the water tends to be warm and inviting this time of year. If you’re staying in Oahu, swimming can be particularly pleasant with water temperatures around 77°F on average.

Ocean Conditions

Spending time in the ocean is one of the most common ways for visitors to enjoy this paradise island. Depending on which island you’re staying on, you can go surfing, fishing, sailing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, and many other activities in December. Temperatures on the shore of Honolulu are warmer than those of Hilo, but you can still comfortably swim.

Ocean temperatures in December all around the Hawaiian Islands remain around 77-degree Fahrenheit, on average. Of course, you’ll notice slight differences depending on which side of the island you’re on.

Cost to Visit Hawaii in December

The first two weeks of December are relatively cheaper to visit compared to the last two weeks when Christmas and holiday festivities are in full swing. Still, you should be prepared to spend more during your trip since December is considered the “high season”. If you are looking for a cheaper month to visit, September in Hawaii is a good option.

Economy-class, round-trip flight tickets to Hawaii from the Midwest or East Coast can cost around $500-$900 or even more during December. The cost of round-trip business class or first class tickets can go upwards of $2,000. We recommend booking your trip 2-3 months in advance – book as early as you can. If you wait until the last possible minute to buy your ticket, you’ll pay much more than if you book at least 30 days in advance.

A good trick to find cheaper tickets is to be flexible in your travel times. For example, a lot of people prefer not to fly before 7-8:00 am or on “red-eye” (overnight) flights. If you’re willing to fly at these less-than-popular hours of the day, you can save a significant amount.

Accommodation

Once Thanksgiving is over hotel rates begin to go down, but they do get back up as the holidays approach. The Christmas week leading up to New Year’s Day can be the most expensive time to book a hotel in Hawaii. On average, hotels can cost about $250-$350 or more in December. Even the most budget-friendly hotels can cost $130-$160 per night on average.

If you have a tight budget, consider staying at a hostel or a rental condo via Airbnb or Booking.com. Many visitors find that VRBO and Airbnb are often cheaper than staying at a hotel.

Keep in mind that Oahu is the cheapest island in Hawaii and you can find a hostel or an Airbnb rental for about $50-$70 per night, even in the peak season.

Another super cheap option is to couch-surf, i.e., staying for free in a local’s home. If you do choose this option, remember to do thorough research before making your decision. It’s not for everyone after all. On the plus side, it’s, well, FREE and a great way to completely immerse yourself in the local culture.

Fun Tip: If you can’t afford to stay at a fancy hotel but still want to enjoy the luxury perks like the spa, sauna, and swimming pool, you can buy a hotel day pass for as little as $25/person. The pass will allow you to hang out at the pool and use several other amenities that only hotel guests get to enjoy.

Renting a car is the best way to explore Hawaii, especially if you’re traveling with kids because you won’t be restricted to activity shuttles or public transportation. That being said, car rental prices in Hawaii are among the highest in the nation.

In off-seasons, renting a car costs around $70-$125/day. In December, you can expect to pay around $80-145/day for the more reasonable vehicles. Larger vehicles and SUVs will be on the higher end.

Best Times to Book For Your December Vacation

For a December vacation, book your flights, accommodation, and everything else at least 30 days in advance if you can. The week of Thanksgiving is usually the best time to score savings on Christmas travel.

Many people think that booking 2-3 months in advance (for domestic travel) is the best policy – it is , unless you’re traveling during a popular holiday or peak season. Also, you may have heard that last-minute tickets are the cheapest – don’t wait for that, it happens very rarely. Sure, sometimes there can be a short window a couple of weeks out if an airline is trying to fill a plane, but it’s never a guarantee.

Is December Crowded in Hawaii?

The last two weeks sure are. If you don’t like crowds, schedule your trip for the first or second week of December. The end of the month gets really busy here with people flocking to Hawaii for the holidays.

Events in December

Here is what’s happening in the Hawaiian Islands in December:

December is when the world’s top professional surfers come together to compete in the Triple Crown of Surfing on the North Shore of Oahu . The prize money is more than $1 million. While you’re there, check out the best food trucks on the North Shore and the best beaches on the North Shore .

The Festival of Lights is also celebrated on all the Hawaiian Islands during December. On Oahu, the mayor performs the ceremony of lighting up a gigantic pine tree and other ancient trees in front of Honolulu Hale.

Held during the second week of December, there’s a stunning Christmas parade along Ali’i Drive in Kailua-Kona.

The Kona Surf Film Festival is also held this month at the Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. If you are a wave rider, this is where you can check out some outdoor screenings of independent movies about everything pertaining to waves. No, Fast and Furious will not be shown here!

There’s the Na Mele O Maui competition held in Kaanapali. It’s a traditional Hawaiian song and art competition held in the first week of December in the ballroom of one of the Kaanapali Resort hotels.

Lahaina Banyan Tree Lighting is another fun event scheduled for December 2 nd and 3 rd this year. The Banyan Tree Park located in the heart of Lahaina comes alive with all types of entertainment including holiday crafting, face painting, cake decorating, and more. It’s a good place to take your family to.

If you like baked goodies – who doesn’t – you can book a trip on the Maui Sugar Cane Train. Imagine delicious baked treats, live music, a crafts fair, and free toys passed around by the Santa himself. Train rides depart from Pu’ukolii every day during the Christmas week in the evenings. Tickets are $30/person.

There’s quite a few things going on in Kauai this month. Let’s start with the Annual Lights on Rice Parade in Lihue. Head over to the historic county building in Lihue where Christmas decorations will light up the whole area, along with a parade down Rice Street and local entertainment.

The Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade is usually held a week before Christmas and is a good way to enjoy the company of locals with scrumptious refreshments and entertainment.

If you want to see major fireworks, make your way to the Poipu Beach Park on December 31 st for some New Year’s Eve festivities.

If you’re in Lanai in early December, you can see the Christmas Festival and a tree lighting ceremony featuring local food, island-style live entertainment (luau), Christmas music, goodie bags for children, and so much more.

The Christmas Light Parade in Kaunakakai is filled with holiday arts and crafts and lively music. The parade is usually held in mid-December.

And of course, there’s the Festival of Lights with its floats, marching bands, and other special activities in Kaunakakai.

Water Activities

While there is your usual swimming, surfing, paddleboarding, and other fun stuff to do in the water here, the best thing to do in Hawaii in December is whale watching !

You don’t even have to head out in a boat – in December, you can see these magnificent sea creatures breach and spy-hop from the shore. If you’re in Maui, one of the best places is McGregor Point located at mile marker 9 along the Honoapiilani Highway.

You can also book a whale-watching cruise or a snorkel tour with the Pacific Whale Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to protecting whales from extinction. There are several daily trips you can take out of both Maalaea and Lahaina harbors.

Some other good whale-watching spots on Maui include:

Wailea Beach Marriott Resort: The Hawaii Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary installed a telescope here so people can come and see the whales through it.

Olowalu Reef: Along the straight part of Honoapiilani Highway, between Olowalu and McGregor Point, you may see whales leap out of the water. Their appearance often brings traffic to a screeching halt as people abandon their vehicles and run down to the beach to watch.

Pu’u Olai: It’s a challenging climb up this coastal landmark located near the Maui Prince Hotel, but this is the island’s best spot for off-shore whale-watching.

Another good way to spend your time here is to go boating. One of the most spectacular natural attractions in Hawaii is Kauai’s Napali Coast. There are only two ways to see it – by boat or by helicopter, unless you are willing to make the 22-mile hike.

When the Pacific humpback whales visit Hawaii from December to March, you can watch them from a boat as they swim right by Kauai. Also, there are many freshwater areas in Kauai that you can only access via a boat, such as the Menehune Fish Pond, Huleia and Hanalei national wildlife refuges, Wailua State Park, Fern Grotto, and several waterfalls. It usually costs about $80-$100 per person to book a boat tour.

Outdoor Activities

One of the most notable outdoor adventures awaiting you on the islands is in Honolulu, Oahu. We are talking about the Honolulu Marathon , the 4 th largest marathon in the US. Over 30,000 people participate to run a scenic course of 26.2 miles.

You can also visit the Haleakala National Park in Maui to go biking, hiking, or just exploring the enchanting forest trails. This is a preserved park with a currently dormant volcano. Legends say the Hawaiian demigod Maui hid the sun inside the forest here because he was trying to make the days longer than the nights. You can either take a hike or drive through the scenic surroundings to the Haleakala crater.

For those who crave a little danger with their adventures, try swimming in Shark’s Cove in North Shore Oahu. But don’t worry, your odds of coming across a shark are actually very low.

And of course, the go-to outdoor event no trip to Hawaii will be complete without – attending a luau!

Other Activities Worth Mentioning

Here are some other things you can do in Hawaii during the winter months:

Birding: You’ll see many tropical birds here that are found nowhere else on earth. There are black-winged red birds, curved-bill honeycreepers, and the rare o’o, whose feathers were once used to make capes for the Hawaiian royalty. Molokai and Kauai in particular are wonderful places to spot exotic birds. Molokai’s Kamakou Preserve is home to Molokai creeper and Molokai thrush, which only live on this tiny island.

Body Boarding and Bodysurfing: Becoming one with the rolling water and riding the waves without a board is the way they roll in Hawaii (pun intended). Some bodysurfers use hand boards while some just rely on their hands to ride the waves.

Horseback Riding: Seeing Hawaii on horseback is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. You can find riding opportunities on almost all islands, no matter how old you are or what your level of experience is. You can gallop across the wide-open spaces of the Big Island’s Parker Ranch, one of the largest privately-owned ranches in the nation; ride through Oahu’s remote windward valleys on Kualoa Ranch; or ride into Maui’s Haleakala Crater.

Is there a hurricane threat in Hawaii in December?

No. June through November is the hurricane season in Hawaii, but still big storms are extremely rare. A storm may occur in December, but the risk of a hurricane during this month is pretty negligible.

Is December a good time to go to Hawaii?

Well, it depends. December falls under the holiday season and Hawaii happens to be one of the most popular vacation destinations for Christmas and New Year. This means December, especially the last two weeks, are crowded and thus expensive.

However, if you want to celebrate Christmas island-style and you can afford it, December can be a stupendous time for your trip.

Is it warm in Hawaii in December?

It’s always warm in Hawaii, but a typical December day sees temperatures in the low 80s, on average. You can expect the evenings to be chilly – it is winter after all. But compared to the rest of the US, we’ll say yes, it stays pretty cozy-warm during this month.

Which part of Hawaii is the warmest in December?

Kauai. The temperatures on all islands don’t vary that much but still, you may find Kauai to be the warmest.

Can you swim in December in Hawaii?

Yes, definitely. The waters are comfortably warm in December; you won’t need a wetsuit.

What part of Hawaii is best to visit in December?

Our vote goes to Oahu because even during the peak Christmas festivities, it stays the least crowded. For those who want to celebrate Christmas in Hawaii on a budget, you can’t pick a better place than Oahu.

What to wear in Hawaii in December?

During the day, we recommend wearing loose, Aloha wear – dresses and skirts for women and t-shirts, Hawaiian shirts, and shorts for men. But you’ll need a light sweater, jacket, sweatshirt, and pants during the evening as it can get chilly.

This guide provides detailed information on what you should expect when   visiting Hawaii in December   – from its mild weather conditions and unique activities to seasonal costs and crowd levels.

So, let’s jump into the   Hawaiian paradise   even as the calendar shifts into winter.

  • December is a great time to visit Hawaii because the weather is warm and there are fun activities like surfing and hiking.
  • While December can be rainy, showers are usually short. Just bring an umbrella or rain jacket.
  • The ocean temperatures in December are warm, around 78°F, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Plus, there are festive holiday events to enjoy during your trip.
  • It’s important to book accommodations early in advance as prices tend to increase closer to Christmas due to high demand.

Immerse yourself in the tropical paradise that is Hawaii during December. The island state truly comes alive, displaying a unique blend of Hawaiian hospitality and holiday festivity that cannot be experienced at any other time of year.

The lush rainforests become even more vibrant due to an average rainfall of 1.85 inches during this month, adding an extra layer of charm to your visit. Rain showers are typically brief, ensuring they don’t disrupt your outdoor plans.

Despite being the wettest month for Hawaii overall, parts like Maui remain relatively dry with just 0.87 inches of rainfall on average – making it a dream destination for those seeking generous sunshine amidst moderate temperatures and crystal blue waters.

Keep in mind that early December sees less crowd than end-of-the-month days as holidaymakers start pouring in closer to Christmas. This increases accommodation prices across islands from Honolulu’s Oahu to Kauai and the Big Island.

December in Hawaii offers pleasant weather with warm temperatures and inviting ocean conditions. From air temperature to water temperatures, rainfall, and the hurricane threat, find out everything you need to know about visiting Hawaii in December.

In Hawaii, December air can feel warm and inviting. The average high reaches 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The low temperature is not too cool, only dropping to an average of 71 degrees. It’s   warmer in Kailua-Kona with a high of 83 degrees .

Even in winter, the weather stays mild for perfect beach days at any time during your Hawaiian vacation!

In December, the ocean in Hawaii feels nice and warm. It is about 78°F (26°C). You will love this if you like swimming or surfing (be aware of big/dangerous waves at north-facing beaches). This pleasant temperature happens because of trade winds and the fact that there are   no hurricanes in December .

So, you can enjoy water sports all day long!

December is the   rainiest month in Hawaii , with an average rainfall of 1.85 inches. However, don’t worry too much because   showers are usually short   and   don’t last all day . The amount of rain varies from island to island, with Maui being the driest with an average rainfall of 0.87 inches.

So, while you may need to pack a rain jacket or bring an umbrella just in case, it’s unlikely that your entire trip will be rained out.

December is not part of the hurricane season   in Hawaii, so you don’t need to worry about hurricanes if you’re planning a trip during that time. The hurricane season typically runs from June to November, but the threat of hurricanes has significantly diminished by December.

It’s important to note that while hurricanes are rare during December in Hawaii, it’s always good to stay informed and check for any weather updates before your trip. Safety should be your top priority when visiting any destination, so make sure to follow any advisories or warnings issued by local authorities.

You be the judge of that.

Unique Holiday Celebrations: December is a time of festive celebrations worldwide, and Oahu is no exception. However, the island adds its Hawaiian touch to the season. From Santa arriving on a canoe, Christmas decorations, to Hawaiian Christmas carols (mele kalikimaka!), the holiday season here is unlike any other Christmas vacation.

Surf’s Up!: December marks the beginning of the big wave season on the North Shore. It’s a great time to witness world-class surfing competitions or, if you’re up for it, take a surfing lesson yourself.

Nature at its Best: December’s occasional rain showers mean the island is lush and green. It’s a great time for hiking as the trails are less dusty, and waterfalls, like Manoa Falls or Waimea Falls, are in full flow.

Cultural Experiences: December hosts various cultural events reflecting Hawaii’s diverse population. From traditional hula performances to Japanese Bon dances, there’s a cultural event for everyone.

Seasonal Delicacies: The holiday season brings out special menus in restaurants across Oahu. It’s a chance to savor seasonal Hawaiian treats like kulolo (a taro and coconut dessert) or fresh ahi poke with winter-inspired twists.

What is The Weather Like In Oahu In December?

Oahu in December sees a delightful transition from fall to winter, offering a blend of tropical charm and cooler undertones. The weather during this month is generally pleasant, but it does come with a few nuances that travelers should be aware of.

Temperature: December temperatures in Oahu typically range from the mid-60s to the average high temperature of the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 18 to 24°C). The days are warm and the perfect time for beach activities, while the evenings can get slightly cooler, especially in the inland and higher elevation areas.

Rain: December marks the beginning of Oahu’s wet season. While you can expect frequent sunny days, rain showers are not uncommon. These showers are often brief and localized, especially in the windward (eastern) side of the island. However, they bring about lush green landscapes, making the island even more picturesque. It’s a good idea to pack a light rain jacket or a portable umbrella when heading out.

Surf Conditions: The North Shore of Oahu is famous worldwide for its massive winter swells, and December is prime time for surfing. Beaches like Waimea Bay, Pipeline, and Sunset Beach can see waves reaching heights of 20 feet or more. These conditions are fantastic for professional surfers and spectators, but can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers or surfers.

Humidity: Relative humidity in December can range from a comfortable 60% to a slightly sticky 90%, depending on the time of day and recent weather patterns. The presence of trade winds, however, often offsets this, offering a cooling breeze, especially along the coast.

Sunlight: Daylight hours are slightly shorter in December, with sunrise occurring around 7 am and sunset around 6 pm. It’s essential to maximize your activities during these hours and also ensure you have appropriate lighting if embarking on late afternoon hikes

For a cooling dessert, the shave ice from establishments like Matsumoto Shave Ice in Haleiwa and Waiola Shave Ice in Honolulu is unparalleled. These finely shaved ice mounds drenched in sweet syrups offer respite from Oahu’s tropical warmth. Try it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the center.

Hot Tip: Try the shave ice at Mountain Magic Shave Ice at Waikele Center in Waipahu. I have yet to try it here, so I’d love a report from you! It’s rated the best shave ice on Oahu by Honolulu Magazine.

Lastly, the island’s diverse cultural influences shine in dishes like saimin , a noodle soup with roots in various Asian cuisines. Both Palama Supermarket in Honolulu and Shige’s Saimin Stand in Wahiawa serve memorable bowls of this comforting dish. You can also try it at iconic Rainbow Drive-In

New Years Celebrations In Oahu

In the heart of the Pacific, Oahu offers a unique blend of traditional Hawaiian festivities and modern celebrations as it ushers in the New Year. The island, already a melting pot of cultures and traditions, takes on an extra layer of sparkle and energy on December 31st.

As the sun sets over the horizon, painting the skies in hues of orange and pink, the beaches of Waikiki start humming with anticipation. Hotels and resorts along the coast host lavish feasts and parties, with live music echoing the island’s rich musical heritage. The rhythmic beats of Hawaiian drums merge seamlessly with contemporary tunes, creating a soundtrack that’s distinctively Oahu.

The Aloha Tower at Honolulu Harbor stands as a prime vantage point for one of the island’s most grandiose firework displays. As the clock inches closer to midnight, residents and tourists alike gather here, their eyes fixed on the skies, waiting for the pyrotechnic spectacle that will light up the night. Simultaneously, at Waikiki Beach, another magnificent firework show draws crowds, with the reflections of the fireworks dancing on the Pacific’s gentle waves.

Beyond the beaches and the urban hustle of Honolulu, New Year’s in Oahu also resonates with cultural significance. Many locals engage in the tradition of makahiki, a Hawaiian celebration marking the end of the harvest season, filled with games, dance, and music. The blowing of the pu (conch shell) at midnight is another cherished tradition, believed to cleanse the past year’s negative energies, making way for a prosperous new year.

Food plays an integral role in the celebrations. Families come together to share dishes like poke, laulau, and kalua pig. The sweet aroma of haupia and freshly baked malasadas fills the air, adding to the island’s festive spirit.

In essence, New Year’s Eve in Oahu is a symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors. It’s an island where ancient traditions and contemporary revelries coalesce, promising a beginning that’s as diverse and vibrant as its storied past. As the first rays of the New Year’s sun touch Oahu, they illuminate an island rejuvenated, ready to weave yet another year of stories and memories.

Tips For Travelers To Oahu In December

Packing Wisely: While Oahu boasts warm weather year-round, December can bring occasional rain showers. Pack light, breathable clothing, but also bring a light rain jacket or umbrella. Don’t forget your swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen, and a hat.

Booking in Advance: December, especially around Christmas and New Year’s, is a popular time for visitors. It’s wise to book flights, accommodations , and special tours or activities well in advance to avoid last-minute price surges or unavailability.

Watch the Waves : December is when the North Shore of Oahu sees massive swells, making it a surfer’s paradise. However, if you’re not an experienced swimmer or surfer, it’s essential to heed lifeguard warnings and avoid venturing into dangerous waters.

Embrace Local Traditions: December is a great time to experience local Hawaiian holiday traditions, from mele kalikimaka (Merry Christmas) celebrations to New Year’s customs like popping firecrackers to ward off evil spirits. Participate, but always with respect.

Navigating Traffic: With increased tourists and local holiday events, traffic in Honolulu and other popular areas can be congested. If renting a car, try to avoid peak hours, or consider using public transportation, like TheBus, which services most of the island.

Holiday Dining: Many restaurants offer special holiday menus or events. If there’s a particular place you wish to dine at, make reservations early. Also, explore local eateries for traditional Hawaiian holiday dishes.

Safety First: Like any tourist destination, it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Use hotel safes for valuables and avoid leaving items in your car.

Local Events: Check local listings or ask around for special events, concerts, or festivals happening in December. Oahu often hosts unique holiday events that are worth attending.

Rent a Car: I highly recommend renting a car either from a traditional car rentals or Turo. I have rented through Turo when I took a side day trip to Kauai and had a wonderful experience. I have friends that rent through Turo when they visit Oahu and love it.

Shopping Tips: If you’re looking for unique gifts or souvenirs, December sees various craft fairs and markets, like the Honolulu Gift Fair. It’s an excellent opportunity to pick up locally made items.

Be Respectful: While it’s vacation time for you, remember that locals are going about their daily lives and might also be preparing for their holiday celebrations. Always be respectful, whether you’re exploring a neighborhood or visiting a beach.

Hawaii Weather in December: What to Know About Winter in the Island

hawaii weather in december

Hawaii Aloha Travel > Blog > Hawaii Weather in December: What to Know About Winter in the Island

As winter’s chill arrives to your home, you’ll likely begin daydreaming about Hawaii weather in December. Or, maybe you’re lucky enough to be planning a trip here and wondering what to expect for your December Hawaii vacation.

We’ve got you covered! Here’s an overview of December weather in Hawaii for those of you planning your holiday trip (or those of you wishing you were here!)

Great Year Round Weather

One of the biggest questions about Hawaii’s December weather is if it will be nice. We’re happy to share that Hawaii has great weather year-round, and you can have a great tropical vacation in December.

One thing to keep in mind is that Hawaii has many climate zones, and you’ll likely sightsee in cooler temperatures. But most hotel hotspots, like Waikiki or South Maui will be warm and sunny. And nearly all attractions, like Volcanoes National Park or Haleakala will be accessible in December.

Temperatures on Each Island

When we’re chatting with out-of-state friends, we tell them that typical winter temps in Hawaii reach the high 70s or the low 80s. But this is just based on observations. To get real Data, we turned to the National Weather Service, which has lots of detailed Data about weather trends.

They confirmed our unofficial observations. Here’s what you can expect on each island:

Honolulu County (Oahu) typically reaches highs of 82 degrees fahrenheit and lows of about 68.

Maui’s sunniest areas (Kihei, Wailea, and Kaanapali) will see highs near 80s. Maui county temps don’t get above 65 in some locations in December, but that will be at high elevations. Lows are around 69 in the warm regions.

December highs in Kauai range from 75-80 degrees fahrenheit. Lows will be around 65-70

Hawaii Island

On Hawaii Island, Kona highs can reach 85 degrees fahrenheit. Higher elevations may not get warmer than 68 degrees. Lows range from 43 to 71 degrees.

Hawaii Rainfall in December

The Hawaii weather in December may be a bit wetter than in summer months. But most areas of the islands will see a small chance of showers. It’s usually just enough to begin turning the mountainsides green and maybe cooling off some warmer areas.

Surf in December

Hawaii’s winter surf season runs about November through April. This is when big waves come into the northern and western shores of the islands. This means that North Shore beaches won’t be ideal for swimming. In fact, they may be outright dangerous. But they’re a great spot to watch brave surfers from shore.

If you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer, you’ll be best on south shores.

Dressing for Hawaii Weather in December

If you’re visiting in December, you should bring all your warm-weather essentials: shorts, swimsuits, tank tops, and light dresses. But bring layers too. A light sweater or denim jacket is perfect to throw on if you’re out in cooler temps.

Bring your warm layers along if you’re exploring higher altitudes, like Haleakala or Volcanoes National Parks. We like to pack along blankets if we’re going to watch the sunrise or stargaze on top of one of Hawaii’s mountains .

December Activities

You can do most activities in December – you just may need to be more selective about choosing your snorkeling spot or forest hike. And this rainier time of year means you need to be extra mindful of flash floods.

But there are also things that are more fun in December. Here are a few best things to do in Hawaii’s winter weather:

  • Whale Watch: Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii in the winter, and December is one of the peak months for seeing them breach in the water.
  • Big Wave Surfing: You likely won’t be participating in this dangerous and thrilling sport, but it’s fun to watch the experts tackle Hawaii’s winter waves.
  • Christmas Activities: Many hotels offer special Christmas programs. It’s also fun to simply drive around and see the local homes decorated for the festive season. See Poinsettias growing along the roadside or palm trees draped in Christmas lights.

You may be hesitant to visit Maui in December due to the cost and December is one of the wettest months for Maui. But Maui’s warm temperature, sunny days, and the start of the whale season make it one of the best Hawaiian islands to visit in December.

Here we’ll share everything you need to know about visiting Maui in December: the weather, the crowds, the cost, holiday festivities, and some of the best things you don’t want to miss.

Maui in December: Is December a Good Time to Go?

To escape the winter, Maui is a great place to spend your December. The weather on Maui in December is one of the best in the Hawaiian islands and the world. Maui’s downfall is the cost. A December vacation gets pricey.

Maui is already the most expensive Hawaiian island to visit during the year. Rental car rates and hotel rates hit their peak in December. One must book early and be ready to shell out some cash.

But that doesn’t mean you should cross Maui off your vacation list. Besides the great weather in December, December is the start of the whale season! No other island gives you the opportunity to see flying humpback whales for the holidays like Maui.

Maui in December: Reasons to Go

✅ Pleasant tropical weather, not as hot as the summer months

✅ Start of the whale season!

✅ The ocean is a perfect 77 degrees for swimming

✅ Maui Christmas has decorated palm trees, Santa, and the aloha is dialed up

✅ Maui has more sunshine hours than any other Hawaiian island in December

✅ Not too busy. December is the 4th busiest month for Maui.

Maui for Christmas

Christmas on Maui floods my mind with warm memories. The Lahaina Christmas parade, surfing on Christmas day, palm trees twinkling, and our son running around the grass with his tank top on in December. Those are some of the reasons why I love Maui in December.

A Christmas on Maui is far different than my white Christmases in Northern Michigan where I grew up. The weather, obviously, but also Christmas with aloha melds traditions in a way that just feels right.

The small-town atmosphere on Maui makes Christmas a joyful and festive time of year. The whole month of December is full of Christmas activities so don’t feel obligated to go over Christmas break to get a taste of Mele Kalikimaka.

Is Maui Expensive in December?

It ain’t cheap. If you are looking for a hotel room, December is the most expensive month of the year. The average daily hotel rate was $540 in December 2019, which is 36% higher than the yearly average. In the four-star resort area of Wailea, the average rate was $890. Ouch. (Source: Hawaii Tourism Authority )

Hotel Rates Maui in December

You’ll find better deals by booking a vacation rental in December. December is the 3rd most expensive month for vacation rental rates. At $278 per night for a vacation rental in December, only January and February are more expensive. But that is a big saving compared to a hotel room.

Vacation Rental Rates in Maui in December

Rental car rates also go up in December. While the very busy Christmas holiday period, late December to New Year’s, inflates the average, you should still expect to pay higher than average rates.

Local Tip: Book your rental car early and call to confirm your booking before you depart. Rental car companies can run out of cars close to Christmas so make sure your reservation is rock-solid.

For this cost, I looked at three major car rental comparison websites. We always use Discount Hawaii Car Rental because we save so much every time. We used them during our Christmas trip to the Big Island last year and the savings were similar to what the table shows below.

Maui in December Rental Car Rates

Flights also go up as they do across America during the December holiday period. If you are looking to save money on your December in Maui vacation, I recommend the following three tips.

🍍 Book early, like more than 6 months in advance

🍍 Sign up for deal notifications via Hawaii’s budget carriers: Southwest, Alaskan Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines

🍍 Follow our 5 Insider’s Tips to Getting a Cheap Ticket to Hawaii

All in for Maui in December will cost you over $10,000 for a family of four staying for 10-days (2020 prices). The below chart is the estimated Hawaii vacation in late December for airfare, hotel, and rental car. Throw in food and activities and you have a trip of a lifetime to Maui in December!

Maui Weather in December: What’s Maui Like

Maui is absolutely fabulous in December. I have a hard time handling the Maui heat on the westside (Lahaina and Ka’anapali area) during the summer when temperatures are in the 90s and humid.

Maui will greet you off the plane with a cool breeze and days in the mid-70s. The ocean will be a warm 77 degrees Fahrenheit and you can expect over 7 hours of sunshine a day on average. That’s non-cloud sunny time.

Staying in Wailea, Ka’anapali, or Hana in December means nice weather.

The only downside of December weather is a higher chance of rain compared to other months. December is the wettest month on Maui. South Maui with Wailea and Kihei is the dryest area in December so consider staying in that area to have the best chance of avoiding the rain.

Maui in December Rainfall Data by Month

Compared to the other Hawaiian islands in December, Maui stacks up well. Only the Kailua-Kona area on the island of Hawai’i has warmer weather and less rainfall than Maui in December.

How Busy is Maui in December?

December is not the busiest time to visit Maui. It is the 4th busiest month with 8% more visitors than the average of 254,000 visitors a month.

If you want to avoid the crowds in December, go soon after Thanksgiving. The month starts off quiet and then picks up speed as Christmas approaches.

If you are coming after mid-December, I recommend you book activities and your favorite restaurants before you arrive. The two most popular luaus will require reservations 3 to 4 weeks in advance. December isn’t so busy that the beaches will be crowded. Maui isn’t Waikiki.

As you can see from the data below, December isn’t the busiest month but it is still above average. Maui is well equipped to handle a lot of visitors so as a local, we don’t feel December is crowded.

Things to Do on Maui in December

You can do all of the most popular activities on Maui every month of the year. But there are some that are extra special in December.

🍍 Whale Watching : Mid-December is the official start of whale season but whales are sighted as early as late October. Hop on a whale watching tour or watch them from shore. Check out our Guide to Whale Watching on Maui on choosing the best tour for you.

🍍 PGA Tour Tournament of Champions : The Plantation Golf Course in Kapalua (North West Maui) is home to the season opener of the PGA tour. Come watch some of the world’s top golfers.

🍍 Annual Chinese New Year’s Festival : Maui is a melting pot of the Pacific. The Maui Mall and the Wo Hing Museum in Lahaina features a Chinese New Year celebration. Watch dragons dance, martial art performances, and music.

Christmas Festivities

Lahaina is the informal center of Christmas fun in December. The Polar Express Train (aka, The Sugar Cane Train) won’t be running in 2020 but there are still plenty of other things to do and see in December on Maui.

🍍 Banyan Tree Court : Come see the largest banyan tree in Hawaii (16-trunks and 1.8 acres in size) be lit up with large Christmas bulbs. It will put a smile on your face.

🍍 Aloha Christmas Parade : Visit Lahaina for the annual Christmas parade down historic Front Street.

🍍 Christmas Hula and Mele Shows : Visit the Shops at Wailea, Whalers Village in Ka’anapali, The Cannery Mall in Lahaina, or Outlets of Maui in Lahaina for free Christmas hula dancing and caroling. These were our favorite shows to go to during the holidays.

🍍 Upcountry Tree Lighting : Head to MauiWine at Ulupalakua Ranch for their annual tree lighting. Bundle up so you can stay for the movie under the stars afterward.

Final Thoughts on Maui in December

Where do you stand on Maui in December? The facts have been presented. Where do you want to spend your December vacation?

For me, Maui in December is okay. Christmas is by far my favorite part of going to Maui in December. Plus the weather is great as it isn’t as hot as summer and the crowds have thinned a bit.

But you have a higher chance of getting rained on and your wallet will feel it more than any other month in Maui. If money is no object or less of a concern then Maui is a wonderful place to visit in December.

Frequently asked questions about visiting Hawaii in the winter

' src=

  • 5 minute read

For those of us who haven’t lived in a tropical environment, it’s difficult to imagine winters without cold weather. So, we tend to get a lot of questions about what Hawaii is like in the winter. Today, we address some of the most frequently asked questions.

How cold is the winter weather in Hawaii?

Winter months of January and February are typically Hawaii’s “coolest” months. By “coldest” months we mean average daytime highs ranging from 78ºF to 82ºF . (In Celsius, that’s around 26ºC.) For most people, they would consider those temperatures to be pleasantly warm and could even be described as summery, even though it’s winter in Hawaii.

Nighttime lows range from around 63ºF to 67ºF. (In Celsius, that’s around 17ºC to 19ºC.) Though those evening temperatures are lower, they’re still quite warm compared to evening winter temperatures in North America. I can only recall one evening during a January trip to Honolulu that I even needed a light sweater.

Note that the temperatures we’ve mentioned are averages. So, there could be temperatures higher and lower, but there usually aren’t huge variations.

All sorts of beach, ocean and land adventures can be enjoyed even during Hawaii’s chilliest winter months. Activity-wise, there’s really no difference in visiting Hawaii in the winter versus summer.

Note that the perception of cold or warm varies from person to person. What you might perceive as cold, I may feel as warm and vice versa. We have always enjoyed lovely, warm weather during our Hawaii winter vacations.

Just in case you are wondering how much temperature variation there is from winter to summer in Hawaii, you may be surprised to learn that there’s not a huge gap. Average daytime highs are in the mid to upper 80s while evening lows average around the mid-70s. For more weather data see our Hawaii weather page.

Do I need to pack a heavy coat, long-sleeved shirts and long pants/trousers for a winter trip to Hawaii?

Hopefully reviewing the above temperatures will give you a better idea of what sort of clothing you need for a Hawaii vacation in the winter. Think of what you normally wear when temperatures are in the upper 70s and lower 80s in your home town. That’s what would be appropriate for a winter vacation in Hawaii. For us, we wear shorts and short-sleeved shirts for most sightseeing and activities.

We don’t pack winter coats or heavy sweaters or any winter wear. We may wear a light jacket or sweater on the plane to and from Hawaii, but we don’t typically use it during our stay. To be prepared in case of a cold snap, bring a light sweater or jacket.

Long pants/trousers are not generally needed for keeping warm in Hawaii in the winter. We often bring a pair on long trousers in case we want to enjoy some activities that require them — like horseback riding, ATV riding, zip lining, hiking over lava, etc. More specifically, we recommend bringing  moisture-wicking, quick-drying pants  for Hawaii vacations. At a minimum, we wear long trousers on the flight to Hawaii, so if there was a cold snap, we could rewear them during our stay. We’ve never needed them due to cold weather in the beach resorts.

As you may have noticed, what we wear on the long flights to Hawaii, can be re-worn just in case we’re there during a cold snap. We’ve never experienced a cold snap yet in all our trips, but we’re prepared nonetheless. See our article on what to wear on the flights to and from Hawaii for your comfort .

Note that in some of the attractions that are at high elevations, warmer clothing is needed. Examples of those areas are the summit of Haleakala on Maui, Volcano on Hawaii Island, the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on Hawaii Island, Lanai City on Lanai, the Pali Lookout on Oahu and Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Parks on Kauai.

For more packing advice, see our popular Hawaii packing advice .

Do any flowers bloom in the winter in Hawaii?

Many tropical flowers bloom in Hawaii all through the year — even in the winter months. Hibiscus, varieties of plumeria, ginger and many more add to the colorful landscapes of Hawaii. See our post on what flowers bloom in Hawaii .

Can you swim in the ocean in the winter?

You can absolutely swim in the ocean in winter months. We’ve gone snorkeling in December, January, February and March with absolutely no issues with the water temperature.  Ocean temperatures in Honolulu don’t fluctuate widely — from a low of 76ºF to a high of 81ºF.

Should I be concerned about rain if I visit Hawaii in the winter?

Hawaii does average more rain in the winter than the summer. From our experience, we’ve rarely had rain be an issue when we visit Hawaii — no matter what time of year we go. In all our winter trips to Hawaii, I can only think of one day that was mostly rainy. Even then, we still got out and about to enjoy the island.

There are some upsides to being in Hawaii during a rainier season. First, the waterfalls should be flowing fully. In contrast to the drier, summer months, waterfalls can be dry or at minimal levels. Also, the islands are more lush and green in the winter.

For more information on rain patterns in Hawaii, see our Hawaii weather page and our article specifically about rain .

Are there any special reasons to avoid or to come to Hawaii in the winter?

I can’t think of a reason to avoid Hawaii. We love visiting in the winter.

Winter is when the humpback whales migrate to Hawaii. It’s a spectacular time to see these massive creatures splashing about in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. See our post on when and where to see humpbacks in Hawaii .

Winter is also when the tall waves hit the north shores. Several professional surfing competitions are held during the winter months.

For more thoughts, see our article about Hawaii in the winter .

So these questions are most frequently asked about Hawaii in the winter. What other winter related questions do you have?

Is December a Good Time To Go to Hawaii?

posted by Caitlin Lloyd on September 2, 2022 // last updated on September 2, 2022

With your kids off of school for the holidays, taking a family trip to Hawaii might be on your mind. But is December a good time to go to Hawaii?

December can be a good time to go to Hawaii, depending on your budget, the experience you want, and the flexibility of your travel dates. That’s because there are two different versions of Hawaii in December, with the first half being quieter and more economical.

In either case, December is an excellent time of year for witnessing Hawaii’s famous waves, trying out its cuisine, and exploring volcanoes beneath a mix of rain and sunshine.

An Overview of Tourist Seasons in Hawaii

The holiday conundrum, breakdown of hawaii’s weather in december, how much daylight does hawaii get in december, do cyclones happen in hawaii in december, surfing in december, sea turtle sightings, are there mosquitos in hawaii in december, december events in hawaii, best time of year to visit hawaii, are you ready for hawaii.

The high season in Hawaii is from mid-December to March, which falls during the winter months. That means your travel dates in December will significantly impact the type of experience you have.

When December 15th rolls around, people begin flooding Hawaii for the holidays. Until then, you can expect more beach space to yourself and next-to-no lines waiting for yet another poke bowl (they’re just so good!).

What we’re about to share might surprise you: December is one of the rainiest months in Hawaii. The other high-season months also experience relatively large amounts of rain, with January being the month with the most rainfall .

So, why would the rainy season make December a great time to visit Hawaii?

Rain doesn’t last long in Hawaii. So, having a washout day where you have to stay indoors because of rainfall is rare, and breaks with lots of sunshine are common.

In contrast, summer is the low season in Hawaii, as the temperatures are hotter and the waves aren’t as big for surfing.

Hawaii

Christmas and New Year’s draw thousands of tourists to Hawaii’s shores.

It’s an exciting time to visit, and Hawaii fills with traditions that you’d find in many mainland parts of the United States; people singing Christmas carols, decorated stores, and houses adorned with Christmas lights are some of the many sights you’ll see.

Plus, poinsettias grow in Hawaii, so you’ll be able to see these flowers in bloom when meandering around the islands.

New Year’s is equally exciting in Hawaii, as people switch gears from Christmas to party mode.

However, the issue for some families looking to travel to Hawaii in December is that their kids have time off of school right when holiday prices kick into gear. As a result, hotels raise their prices significantly, with some hotels costing $100+ what you’d pay during the off-season.

That’s frustrating for the hardworking parent on a budget, given that the off-season encompasses early December.

So, before you book your trip to Hawaii in December, it’s essential to weigh the experience you’re after (crowds versus fewer people) and how much money you’re willing to spend.

Winter is a favorite time of year for tourists visiting Hawaii because they can do outdoor activities under milder temperatures. Since there are 137 islands in Hawaii, seven of which are inhabited, weather conditions can vary from island to island.

So, the information we’ll be sharing below is a general overview of what you can expect. In some cases, the side of the island you’re on can affect the rain and wind patterns.

Temperature

Hawaii has temperatures averaging around 81 °F for highs, and the lowest highs usually don’t drop under 77 °F. In comparison, August is the hottest month in Hawaii, and its average temperature can be as high as 87 °F.

As for lows in December, they can range from 69 °F to 72 °F. So, many people find that wearing a jacket helps keep them comfortable in the evening.

Another factor to consider is the elevation you’re located in. If you’re exploring the volcanoes on Big Island, the temperature will be significantly cooler than if you’re at sea level.

Hawaii

Water Temperature

As with all times of the year in Hawaii, December is a great time to swim in the ocean. The temperature averages 78 °F, although it typically drops a couple of degrees between December 1st to 31st.

Nevertheless, wearing a wetsuit for the cold in Hawaii isn’t necessary. But some people choose to wear one to protect their bodies from debris or from rubbing against the board when they’re learning to surf.

Hawaii is humid throughout December, although the mugginess levels fall as much as 14% between December 1st and 31st.

It’s uncommon for there to be a day that meteorologists label as “comfortable” humidity-wise. But the good news is that oppressively humid days aren’t standard either. Nevertheless, you might be better off skipping the hair straightener and embracing Hawaii’s beautiful tropical weather.

Amount of Sunshine

You can expect a nice tan if you travel to Hawaii in December.

The chances of clear, mostly clear, and partly cloudy days average in the 70% range. Those are impressive numbers, given that this is also the time of year when rain is relatively frequent.

That’s not to say that overcast days don’t happen, though; on average, about 23% to 33% of days in December are either mostly cloudy or completely cloudy. The chance of these clouds is higher at the beginning of the month than at the end of it, though.

Precipitation

The amount of potential rain Hawaii gets increases between December 1st and 31st. That makes sense, given that January 11th is the day with the historically highest chance of rainfall.

When analyzing the 31-day moving average of rainfall in Hawaii, you can see that the total amounts are relatively low. For example, on December 1st, the 31-day moving average is 1.9 inches of rain, and that increases to a moving average of 2.6 inches on December 31st.

Rain in Hawaii commonly comes in short cycles. Furthermore, since many islands are so big and have unique microclimates, it will often rain in one part and dry in another.

An excellent example of this is Maui, where the northern part of the island experiences more rain than the west.

Hawaii

Trade winds are stronger in Hawaii in December than in many other parts of the year. Onshore, you can expect the daily winds to average approximately 12.5 to 14.5 miles per hour, with the lower end of the spectrum happening towards the end of December.

If you’re interested in watching or participating in surfing, monitoring the wind is crucial, as its direction impacts wave quality. So, having offshore wind is best, given that it creates clean surf breaks.

The winter solstice happens on December 21st, meaning it’s the shortest day of the year in Hawaii. You’ll have approximately 10 hours and 50 minutes of daylight at that time.

While this is notably less daylight than during the summer because of its proximity to the equator, Hawaii doesn’t experience extreme daylight changes like destinations significantly north and south of the equator.

No, cyclones don’t happen in Hawaii in December.

The cyclone season is from June 1st to November 30th. So, while it’s always wise to purchase travel insurance to protect you from any trip interruptions, cyclones are a natural disaster you won’t have to worry about.

Surfing in Hawaii is excellent in December if you’re an experienced surfer chasing large swells. But if you’re looking for surf spots for kids and beginners in Hawaii , few places offer respite from the pummeling waves this time of year.

For many tourists traveling with their families, that’s good news—watching pros navigate massive ways is part of the attraction of visiting Hawaii.

The north and west beaches are best for observing experienced surfers, and surfing competitions frequently happen at North Shore.

Surfing in Hawaii

You can technically see Green Sea Turtles in Hawaii any time of year. However, the turtles prefer to lay in the sand when the waves are calmer.

So, if your kids have their hearts set on seeing Green Sea Turtles, the summer months are the best time to see them. The turtles are a bit fussy when they arrive on the shore; late morning, early afternoon, and shortly before sunset are usually the best times to see them.

Mosquitos are present in Hawaii in December, but there aren’t as many as during the summer. That’s because mosquitos prefer warmer weather, so Hawaii’s cool evenings turn them into blissfully lethargic insects.

Regardless, we recommend packing bug spray. There are always a few pesky mosquitoes around in December, especially if you’ll be hiking around dense vegetation.

Are you wondering, “Is December a good time to go to Hawaii for events?” The answer is yes.

Below are a sample of the events you can experience during a family trip to Hawaii in December.

Vans Triple Crown of Surfing

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is a famous surfing competition on North Shore, Oahu. Since 1983, surfing fans and tourists alike have flocked North Shore to watch professionals navigate what are often 50-foot waves.

The dates of this surfing competition vary, but they’re in December and sometimes run into January.

Vans triple crown of surfing

Festival of Lights

Most islands in Hawaii celebrate Christmas by having their personalized version of the Festival of Lights. For example, locals in Oahu light up ancient trees by Honolulu Hale.

Going Christmas light hunting in Hawaii adds an extra layer of excitement compared to doing it at home—you’ll get to see new places while admiring the lights. So, just as you would at home, a quick Google search for “festival of lights” will bring up many Christmas light viewing options wherever you’re staying in Hawaii.

Sugar Cane Train

During Christmas week, the island of Maui puts together a fun Sugar Cane Train for kids. The train starts in Pu’ukolii in the evening and involves eating lots of Christmas baked goods, music, and an art fair.

They even have Santa giving out “free” gifts for the kids on the train. You’ll need to pay for your kids to participate in the train ride, however.

New Year’s Fireworks

It doesn’t get much better than watching fireworks over a beach in Hawaii. And luckily, regardless of what island you’re on come December 31st, there’ll be no shortage of choices of where to watch them.

If you’re in Maui, the fireworks off the Grand Wailea Resort are among the most famous. Alternatively, Waikiki Beach is a perfect firework spot if you’re kicking it in Honolulu.

Hawaii new year fireworks

You might be wondering—is December a good time to go to Hawaii, or is there a better time of year?

The reality is that every month is a good time to visit Hawaii. However, if you’d like to encounter fewer crowds, take advantage of lower hotel prices, and don’t mind warmer weather, the summer months are an excellent choice.

Plus, your kids will be off school for longer in the summer compared to their winter break. So, if you’re able to request some extra time off at work, you might be able to squeeze some additional days into your Hawaii trip.

And given that visiting Hawaii involves a significant time change for people traveling from anywhere in the United States, especially those living on the east coast, having some buffer time may help your family have a more stress-free start to your trip.

Hawaii is a great place to visit any time of year as a family. But understanding the differences in prices and crowds between the first and second half of the month is essential to choosing the best-fit trip for you.

Regardless of the specific time you travel in December, don’t let the rainy season deter you. The rain showers are usually brief, allowing you plenty of time to enjoy dry and sunny weather as you explore Hawaii’s gems.

Maui for Beaches, Whale Watching, and Adventure

Overview of maui.

With around 850 square miles of land, Maui is the second largest island in Hawaii. Known as the “valley isle”, Maui boasts world class beaches with fine white sand, stunning natural scenery like Haleakala Volcano and the scenic Road to Hana, and an average high of about 81°F in December.

From watching whales frolic off the shores of Lahaina to driving through a rainforest on the way to Hana, there’s an abundance of natural beauty and adventure awaiting visitors.

Best Towns and Resorts on Maui

The primary tourist towns on Maui are Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kihei, Wailea, and Paia . Lahaina and Kaanapali on the west side are popular for their proximity to great beaches, whale watching cruises, and resorts like the Westin Maui .

The south side towns of Wailea and Kihei feature stunning beaches like Makena Beach State Park and 5-star resorts. The laidback surfer town of Paia has boutique accommodations and is the starting point for the drive to Hana.

Top Activities and Sights on Maui

  • Soak up the sun and enjoy water sports like snorkeling and surfing at Kaanapali and Kapalua beaches on the west side.
  • Hike through lush rainforest filled with waterfalls and bamboo groves on the famous Road to Hana.
  • Gaze at views of neighboring islands from the 10,000 foot summit of Haleakala Volcano at sunrise or sunset.
  • Check out the charming boutiques, art galleries and restaurants in the artsy beach town of Paia.

December is an ideal time to visit Maui with comfortably warm weather. Along with sunny skies and great beach temperatures come slight chances of brief passing showers. This is low season after the summer crowds have left, so hotel rates will be lower.

For culture, natural beauty and adventure, Maui is a magical Hawaiian island to explore in December!

Kauai for Dramatic Scenery and Relaxation

Overview of kauai.

With emerald mountains, towering waterfalls, and secluded beaches, the island of Kauai is widely regarded as the most stunningly scenic of all the Hawaiian islands. Often called the “Garden Island” thanks to its lush tropical rainforests, Kauai offers incredible natural beauty as well as opportunities for both adventure and relaxation.

In December, Kauai makes an ideal Hawaiian island getaway. The large winter crowds have yet to descend, and the weather is often ideal for activities like snorkeling, ATV adventures, and helicopter tours.

In the interior of the island, temperatures remain warm and rainfall is higher, while coastal areas are drier with temperatures in the mid 70s F.

Recommended Towns and Resorts on Kauai

For lodging, popular base towns and resort areas include:

  • Poipu: Known for its sunny weather and kid-friendly beaches, Poipu on the south shore is home to resorts like the Sheraton Kauai and Grand Hyatt Kauai.
  • Princeville: This area on the beautiful North Shore features scenic cliffside resorts like the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas.
  • Lihue: The island capital offers condos and affordable hotels like Kauai Beach Resort in a central location.
  • Waimea: Quieter and more laid-back than busy Poipu, Waimea offers accommodation options like Waimea Plantation Cottages set amid lush gardens.

Top Things To Do on Kauai

Top attractions and activities on Kauai ideal for December visits include:

  • Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park: Take a boat or raft tour along these stunning sea cliffs and pristine beaches.
  • Waimea Canyon: Explore the incredible vistas at this natural wonder known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”
  • Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge: Seek out ocean birds like the Red-footed Booby at this beautiful lighthouse setting.
  • Helicopter tours: Get a bird’s eye view of Kauai’s most dramatic scenery and waterfalls only visible from the air.
  • Surfing and stand-up paddleboarding: Rent gear and ride waves or paddle peaceful rivers like the Wailua.

Typical December Weather and Prices

In December, average highs on Kauai range from 78°F on the coast to around 83°F inland, while average lows remain balmy at 65 – 68°F across the island. Rainfall totals average 5-6 inches across the island.

By visiting before the winter holidays, you’ll enjoy fewer crowds and often lower lodging prices, such as:

Airfare to Lihue Airport also averages around $260 roundtrip from the West Coast in December according to data from Kayak.com , making the island very affordable during this shoulder season.

Hawaii’s Big Island for Volcanoes and Island Vibes

Overview of the big island.

The Big Island of Hawaii, also known as Hawaii Island, is the largest and youngest of the Hawaiian Islands. Spanning 4,028 square miles, it’s nearly twice as big as all of the other islands combined. The island is home to 11 out of the world’s 13 climate zones, ranging from tropical rainforests to snow-capped mountains.

This diversity makes the Big Island an incredibly unique destination.

The Big Island is also known for its active volcanoes. Kilauea Volcano has been continuously erupting since 1983, creating new land as lava flows into the ocean. This volcanic activity gives visitors a rare opportunity to see the Earth’s creation process firsthand.

Best Places to Stay on Hawaii’s Big Island

Some top places to stay on the Big Island include:

  • Kailua-Kona – This vibrant coastal town on the west side is home to beautiful beaches, great restaurants and shops. It’s a convenient base for exploring the Kohala Coast.
  • Waikoloa Beach Resort Area – This popular resort area features luxury hotels like Hilton Waikoloa Village along with condos, villas and vacation rentals with easy access to beaches.
  • Volcano Village – Located at the edge of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Volcano Village offers cozy bed and breakfasts and cottages surrounded by rainforest.
  • Hilo – The largest population center on the eastern side of the island, Hilo has historic hotels and inns near parks, gardens and waterfalls.

Activities and Sights on the Big Island

Top things to see and do on the Big Island include:

  • Exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and seeing lava flows when active.
  • Stargazing from Mauna Kea – At 13,803 feet elevation, it offers some of the world’s best astronomy observing.
  • Swimming with manta rays on the Kona Coast.
  • Checking out farms and orchards like Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory.
  • Hiking to gorgeous waterfalls like Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls.
  • Snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay and Two Step near Honaunau.
  • Visiting historic places like Pu‘uhonua O Hōnaunau National Park and the city of Hilo.

There are endless adventures to be had on the Big Island. The difficult part is deciding what to do with limited time!

December falls in the Big Island’s winter season between November and March. The weather is delightfully mild, with average highs of 81°F on the Kohala Coast and 79°F in Hilo. Low temperatures average around 65°F.

Rain showers tend to occur on the eastern Hilo side, while the western Kona side stays predominantly dry. However, weather can be unpredictable and change rapidly on the island.

Early December is generally the least crowded time to visit Hawaii as peak rates don’t hit until closer to the holidays. Hotel rates average around $200-$300 per night , while vacation homes and condos offer more space, amenities and convenience for larger groups and families.

No matter where you stay or what you choose to do, the Big Island serves up adventure, stunning scenery and a relaxed island vibe that makes it a fabulous winter escape. For more Hawaii travel tips see Go Hawaii’s Big Island guide .

With near perfect weather featuring sunny skies and warm tropical temperatures, December ushers in the Hawaiian holiday season and creates priceless memories exploring these Pacific isles. We hope our guide gives you the information you need to select the very best Hawaiian island for you this December.

All the islands offer gorgeous scenery, beaches, hikes, and festive luaus. Choose Oahu to experience Waikiki’s famous beaches and Pearl Harbor, or pick lively Maui for stunning coastlines and whale watching.

For dramatic cliffs and waterfalls set against lush greenery opt for peaceful Kauai, or explore Hawaii’s Big Island to discover erupting volcanoes and black sand beaches.

The best island to visit in Hawaii in December

Best Island to Visit in Hawaii in December

Before I really dive into which one of Hawaii’s islands is best for visiting in December, I need to confess. There really isn’t a best island to visit in Hawaii in December! Every single one of the Hawaiian Islands is perfect in December.

In fact, this is a great time of year for first-time visitors and those who love spending time in Hawaii. Nonstop flights are often available on Hawaiian Airlines, American, United, Delta, Alaska Airlines, and more from various cities.

You can also find direct flights between the islands. This is perfect if you want to island hop during your vacation!

I could even argue that December is the best time of the year to visit the Hawaiian islands. It’s cold in most parts of the US, so who doesn’t need some sunshine and relaxation?

Before we get started, I want to remind you that being a respectful tourist (in fact, don’t be a tourist, be a visitor!) is very important. Check out my post on 30 things you should never do in Hawaii to learn what to avoid during your Hawaii vacation.

So I’ve already stated that there is no worst island to visit in Hawaii in December. The only downfall to visiting certain islands is there can be more crowds due to the holiday season. Everyone wants to spend the holidays and the New Year on the main islands.

This means car rentals will book quickly. So will accommodations and tours. Don’t wait to book either of those two things. Public transportation isn’t always an option for everything you want to do on the Hawaiian Islands. You need to rent a car!

best island in Hawaii to visit in December

I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental . My #1 recommendation is to get a rental car to explore the islands! Discount Hawaii Car Rental has the best rates and free cancellation. Also, you don’t have to pay until you pick up your car.

You may want to arrive in early December if you prefer fewer crowds. Or consider other times of the year. Although, maybe not spring break or the summer holidays as many kids are off from school then.

No matter when you decide to visit, you should still purchase travel insurance. That’s a pro tip for a Hawaii Travel Agent!

Reasons Why Every Hawaiian Island is the Best Island to Visit in December

At this point, maybe you are looking for another good reason why every Hawaiian Island is the best island to visit in December. If that is the case, let me share a few of those reasons with you!

Warm weather – The weather is always warm in Hawaii! The only exceptions are high altitudes like Mauna Kea or Haleakala, but seeing SNOW during your Hawaii vacation is pretty cool. Plus, you’re not up there long.

Outdoor activities – There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep everyone occupied in the good weather.

Snow-capped mountains – You can still see snow-capped mountains during a vacation in Hawaii, United States.

best island in Hawaii to visit in December

Humpback whales – Whale sightings increase during the month of December on the islands. I have a blog post with The Best Time for Whale Watching in Hawaii.

Avoid hurricane season – Your Hawaii vacation won’t be interrupted by a hurricane. Still, don’t worry; Hawaii rarely gets hit by hurricanes any time of the year.

Now that I got that out of the way, let’s focus on the three islands I think are the best to visit in December.

Maui in December

Maui always comes in at the top of my list for the best Hawaiian Island to visit in December. Arriving on this island during the winter months is like finally finding your little piece of paradise.

Staying on the South Shore or the western side of the island (the two places with all the accommodations) practically guarantees good weather. The average high temperature is in the mid-70s at this time of year. Rainfall amounts are also low in this part of Maui.

I’m not saying you must stay in South Maui or West Maui. You can stay on the north shore or east coast, but there aren’t many options that I recommend. If the Road to Hana is your main focus for your vacation in Maui, don’t worry, it’s easily accessed from other parts of the island.

best places to snorkel in Maui

As you are appreciating the average daytime temperatures, you may find yourself spending time on beautiful beaches. Thankfully, the winter weather doesn’t bring cold ocean waves to Hawaii. The water temperatures are still warm.

Yes, it may seem strange to be belting out Christmas carols while splashing around in warm water. But that’s what you do while on vacation in Hawaii in December!

Just be careful when entering the ocean. Winter swells can occur. It is best to check the water conditions before you head to the beach for the day.

Whale Watching in Maui

The best Hawaiian Island for whale watching is Maui. The humpback whales love spending time in the waters of the Au’au Channel. You can usually see the whales from the great beaches on Maui. However, a whale-watching tour offers the best way to see the whales up close.

Other Things to Do in Maui in December

Whale watching is the best thing to do in Maui in December and the rest of the winter months. However, there can add many other things to your itinerary to keep busy.

Visit the Maui Ocean Center

The Maui Ocean Center is perfect when you want to see marine life without entering the water. Inside this aquarium, there is a sea turtle lagoon, as well as a 35-foot shark tunnel.

Want to add a unique experience to your Hawaii vacation? Consider doing the shark dive at the Maui Ocean Center. This dive allows you to go into the water and get close to many of the sharks. This is an excellent option if you have little kids uncomfortable in the water.

Go Snorkeling

If you don’t mind swimming in the ocean, you can get close to marine life by snorkeling. You can head out on your own or sign up for a snorkeling tour.

In my opinion, Molokini Crater is the best place to snorkel in Maui. You do have to take a tour because you can’t get to the island on your own (not easily, anyway!) I also have a blog post on Snorkeling Molokini Crater.

best island in Hawaii to visit in December

One of the other best snorkeling spots on the west coast of Maui is Honolua Bay and Black Rock on Kaanapali Beach.

Visit the Nakalele Blowhole

The Nakalele Blowhole basically looks like a geyser. Ocean water is pushed through an underwater cave. You can capture some spectacular selfies here. Of course, you need to have your camera ready when the water shoots out!

Drive the Road to Hana

Driving the Road to Hana takes you along the northern Maui coastline. This road is just over 64 hours long. You can easily drive it in a couple of hours. I don’t recommend that because that means you won’t be stopping at all the incredible sights along the way!

best scenic drives in Hawaii

You can drive your own rental car for this adventure. Or you can sign up for one of the Road to Hana sightseeing tours. The latter might be the best option if you don’t want to deal with the hairpin turns this road is known for.

You can also take a helicopter tour over the Road to Hana.

For more information, check out  The Ultimate Guide to the Road to Hana .

Explore Whaler’s Village

A great place to purchase souvenirs in Maui is Whaler’s Village. You can find a large variety of local options, as well as brand names. You might need those brand-name items if you forgot to pack something in your suitcase.

Experience the Sunrise or Sunset at Haleakala National Park

The most spectacular sunrise in the world can be seen from the summit at Haleakala National Park. The area’s natural beauty makes the perfect backdrop for all the brilliant colors in the sky.

You must plan your visit in advance. This is because you now need a reservation to view the sunrise from the summit area. This reservation is for parking your car at the summit. It doesn’t include the cost of entering the park.

After the sun comes up, you can head over to Haleakala Crater. This dormant volcano offers fantastic views. I recommend a tour since you’ll have to start very early (think 3 AM), and most people don’t live to drive unfamiliar roads at night.

You can even do a tour where you get to bike down (don’t worry, it’s downhill!) after seeing the sunrise.

If you can’t get up early enough to see the sunrise, consider visiting this park for the sunset. Stay a little longer; twinkling stars will greet you in the sky.

Big Island of Hawaii

Is the Big Island the best island to visit in Hawaii in December? The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest island of all the islands. This is the island you will want to visit if you prefer to see snow-capped mountains in December. However, don’t worry; the rest of the island will be nice and warm!

There is very little rain on the Big Island during this month on most parts of the island. Yet, the wind can pick up without notice. That wind can make the average temperature of the upper 70s feel much cooler.

It is important to note that areas with higher elevations, like Mauna Kea, will be much colder.

All the weeks of December bring different events to the Big Island of Hawaii. I’m going to share a couple of them with you, as well as the other things to do in Hawaii in December.

December Events in Hawaii

Here are some Christmas events on the Big Island of Hawaii in December.

Christmas Parade in Kailua-Kona

If you happen to be staying in Kailua-Kona during the second week of December, you will want to see the Christmas Parade. This parade goes along Ali’i Drive.

Kona Surf Film Festival

The Kona Surf Film Festival is held at the Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel every December.

Things to Do on the Big Island of Hawaii in December

Here are a few things to do on the Big Island of Hawaii in December, in no particular order.

Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

This national park was established in 1916. There are two active volcanoes inside the more than 335,000 acres. Those volcanoes are Kileuea and Mauna Loa. One of the inactive volcanoes is Mauna Kea.

I recommend hiking the Kilauea Iki Trail, but bring lots of water!

hiking the Kilauae Iki Trail on the Big Island

You can see lava tubes, craters, and Hawaiian cultural sites during your visit. One destination in the park that should be on your must-see list is the Halema’uma’a Crater. Doing the looped hike to the steamy Sulphur Banks is necessary if you have the time.

I also recommend driving along Crater Rim Drive. It’s an almost 19-mile road that offers spectacular views at all the stops. This is an easy day trip if you are staying on the Kona side. There is no need to stay on this part of the island.

Make sure to check out my Guide to Volcanoes National Park!

Snorkel with manta rays

Snorkeling with manta rays is one of the best things to do on the Big Island and is unique to this island. There isn’t really a “best time of the year” to snorkel with manta rays, but December is as good of a time as any! And yes, the water is warm enough. I recommend Hang Loose Boat Tours .

can you visit hawaii in december

Enjoy Some Kona Coffee

Of course, time in Kona can be spent drinking authentic Kona coffee! While in Kona country, visit a coffee farm for a tour. At the end of your tour, you get to drink a sample of freshly brewed coffee.

Walk Along Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

Hawaii island is known for its black sand beaches. This is one of the best black sand beaches. You can easily stop here on your way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Hawaii on a budget tips

This isn’t your best option for swimming. You will want to choose another beach for that activity. It is an excellent spot to watch the Hawaiian green sea turtles. Learn more about where to spot the beautiful sea turtles in where to find sea turtles on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hike to Papakolea Green Sand Beach

The only way to reach Papakolea Green Sand Beach is by hiking two and a half miles each way. I recommend visiting in the morning if possible. This way, the sun is lower, and it isn’t as warm out.

Please do NOT attempt to drive to the beach or ride with someone else who is driving. This is causing corrosion, and if tourists continue to do this, this beach will end up becoming inaccessible and illegal to visit.

Check Out Some Waterfalls

If this is your first visit to the Big Island, you will want to take the time to check out some waterfalls. It does rain more (on some parts of the island, particularly the east side) in the winter, meaning it’s the prime time to see the waterfalls!

A hike along a trail that is less than half a mile is necessary to see “Akaka Falls. This waterfall draws crowds, so arrive early. The trail is paved and very easy to access for most.

I also recommend visiting Rainbow Falls early in the day. That is when the light hitting the mist forms rainbows. You will find this waterfall inside Wailuku River State Park.

Learn a Little History at Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Centuries ago, locals made their way to this area after breaking the law. This was the only way they could avoid being punished by death.

best island in Hawaii to visit in December

This entire park has been completely restored. You will feel as if you are reliving history as you walk along the self-guided trail.

Is oahu the best island to visit in Hawaii in December?

The weather in Oahu is similar to all the other islands in December. The average temperature reaches the upper 70s, with the lows dropping to the mid-60s.

Rain is common during this month, but it is not nonstop, nor is it in all parts of the island. Most showers will last 10 minutes or so. The result will be having the chance to spot a rainbow or two on your adventures.

The ocean conditions are also perfect at this time of year. If you know you want to spend time at the beach, I recommend choosing from the most luxurious resorts this island offers. Many of them are directly on the beach. This makes the walk to the sand simple every morning.

Things to Do in Oahu in December

Here are a few things to do in Oahu in December.

Attend the Festival of Lights Boat Parade

One of the best things to do on Oahu in December is to attend the Festival of Lights Boat Parade. This event is held at the Hawaii Kai Towne Center.

During the parade, there is live music, as well as hula performances. You might only be there for all the beautifully lit boats.

Check Out Honolulu City Lights

Another favorite holiday activity in Oahu is checking out the Honolulu City Lights. This event takes place throughout the entire month. This is good news because it means you can arrive early when there are fewer visitors.

This is one of the best places for seeing Christmas lights on a Hawaii island. In addition to the lights, there are Shaka Santa and Mrs. Claus statues and Christmas trees.

Plan to stay for a couple of hours. This will ensure you can participate in many of the activities.

Take a Walk at Diamond Head

Diamond Head is always at the top of the to-do list for many people visiting Oahu. This walk isn’t too difficult. People are aware of this, so it will seem like everyone is there at the same time.

2-day Oahu itinerary

I recommend arriving early if you want fewer crowds. This will give you more space to enjoy the views of Waikiki Beach and the ocean. You now need a reservation , so make sure to get that ahead of time.

Go Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay

The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is the best place for snorkeling out of all the major islands in Hawaii. Your family will have a good time as you check out all the marine life in the bay.

Take a Tour of Pearl Harbor

If you read any ultimate guide to Oahu, one of the first things it will tell you to do is book a tour of Pearl Harbor . Oahu is the best island to vacation on when you want to visit this historic site.

You can do this adventure on your own or sign up for one of the many available tours.

Relax at Waikiki Beach

With all the adventures you have on Oahu, you are going to want to spend a couple of hours relaxing on Waikiki Beach. Or any other beach you stumble upon.

best island to visit in Hawaii in December

This is quite “the gathering place,” during the summer months. You should still be able to find a spot in the sand during the high season in December.

You won’t find too many big waves at this beach in Oahu. At least, not if you have the best weather for your vacation.

Watch the Sunset at Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is on the north shore of Oahu. It isn’t a hidden gem, but it isn’t as well known as Waikiki Beach.

As the name suggests, it is one of the best places to watch the sunset. I recommend arriving a couple of hours early. This will allow you to find the perfect spot to watch the magic happen.

Participate in Watersports at Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay is on the north shore of Oahu. It is one of the best places for watersports, especially during the winter months when the big waves roll in.

This is where you will want to watch people surfing and bodyboarding in the Aloha State. Unless this is your first time surfing, you may even want to try to catch a wave yourself. Although, I would save that for the summer months when the waves are calmer.

Visit the Jurassic Valley at the Kualoa Ranch

If you are a Jurassic Park fan, you will want to consider taking a UTV tour at Kualoa Ranch. This ranch encompasses many of the film locations from blockbuster movies. There are many tour options to choose from if you don’t want to ride a UTV. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Jurassic Adventure
  • Hollywood Movie Sites Tour
  • Jurassic Valley Zipline

Check Out the Polynesian Cultural Center

Hands-on activities are everywhere throughout the 42 acres of space at the Polynesian Cultural Center . These activities are amongst the 6 island villages.

After exploring the rich culture within the different villages, you can head out on a canoe tour. Or you can do a little shopping at the Hukilau Marketplace.

If you stay late enough, you can attend a show. Ha: Breath of Life features traditional songs and dances.

These are the three Hawaiian Islands I recommend visiting during the month of December. But remember, you don’t need to limit yourself to just those islands. After all, the island of Kauai is known as Garden Isle.

On that island, you can easily explore Waimea Canyon – known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

best scenic drives in Hawaii

You can hike the trails at Waimea Canyon to the different lookouts. However, if you are searching for a unique experience, I recommend taking a helicopter tour over the entire island. The helicopters allow you to appreciate the scenery from a different vantage point.

What To Expect While Vacationing in Hawaii In Late December

The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Hawaii in December, you will still see lights, decorations , and Christmas trees. The island climate and activities will also still be in full swing, so you can enjoy a bit of everything on your holiday vacation.

What’s the weather like in Hawaii in December?

The December months are temperate, and offer ranges from 70 to mid-80 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter months . This is usually pretty comfortable for getting out and exploring the islands.

The temperature is still great for swimming and going to the beach, but it will get chilly in the evenings. It can also sometimes rain a bit, so it’s a good idea to pack a light jacket. Check out my full Christmas packing list for Hawaii HERE .

While there will be no snow in mass quantities, the high peaks of Mauna Kea and Haleakala Crater can be snow-covered. This is a pretty amazing thing to see.

If you are looking to go surfing in Hawaii , you’ll definitely want to check the surf report. North Shore waves can be pretty intense, so it’s best to sign up for surfing lessons if you’re a beginner.

Is December a crowded time to visit Hawaii?

If you are spending Christmas in Hawaii, you will likely wonder, “Is Hawaii busy during Christmas?”

It is important to remember that the Christmas and New Year’s holidays are a busy time in Hawaii, with many travelers, so be prepared for some crowds if your visit will be towards the end of the month.

If you’re looking for fewer crowds, a good time to visit would be the beginning of December, before the holiday rush.

What’s There to Do In Hawaii During Christmas With Kids

There are many fun Hawaiian xmas activities offered in Hawaii during Christmas. You and your family can spend time at the beach, go skiing , or even enjoy many different Christmas events that are held on the islands.

Fun Christmas Events In Hawaii For Families

Here are some of the top things to do in Hawaii during Christmas!

Big Island Christmas Parades

The Big Island is very big on Christmas celebrations, and there are many parades hosted throughout the island. The Keaau Christmas Parade is a popular option for visitors and offers carolers, performances, and parade floats.

Another option is the Pahoa Christmas Parade , which also includes floats, singers, performers, and even an appearance from Santa!

This attraction is more for early birds as it starts earlier in the morning. At night, Pahoa village is also decorated with lights and decorations for those who may not get up early enough for the parade but still want to enjoy the holiday festivities.

Mauna Kea Snow Adventures

Hawaii is not known for its snow, but the same can’t be said for the high peaks of Mauna Kea .

Every winter in Hawaii at Christmas time, the volcanoes of Hawaii are covered with snow, and those interested in experiencing it can drive up the mountain and take in the snow, make snowballs, or even snowboard or ski if you’d like to.

Skiing and snowboarding on the volcano are not advised for young children as the weather and terrain are unpredictable. However, there is an observatory where you may be able to stargaze on clear nights.

Here’s a cool Mauna Kea stargazing tour that looks amazing!

Honolulu City Lights

Another exciting celebration is Honolulu City Lights . This Oahu Christmas event features a 50ft Christmas tree decorated with island décor and lights.

Find out the best things to do in Hawaii at Christmas. Image of Shaka Santa at Honolulu City Lights, an Oahu Christmas event.

This Hawaii Christmas event is sure to give your children a magical experience. It also features a giant island Santa and Mrs. Claus for you to take pictures with.

There are actually a bunch of events on Oahu associated with Honolulu City Lights, including outdoor movies, displays, etc.

This is one of the top things to do for Christmas in Hawaii for kids!

Santa’s Arrival

The most unique experience to have with your children on a Hawaiian Christmas vacation is Santa’s Island’s arrival. It’s not Christmas in Hawaii until you’ve seen Hawaiian Santa!

While this experience can be found on several different islands and in several different cities, the most well-known occur at the Grand Wailea Resort on Maui and at the Outrigger Hotel on Waikiki Beach .

For this tropical Hawaiian Christmas tradition , Santa arrives at the beach on an outrigger canoe. From there, you can take pictures with him, and witness him reading off his nice list!

It is one of the best things to do in Hawaii for Christmas!

Kauai Festival of Lights

The county of Kauai hosts an annual Festival of Lights , which is perfect for families. This is a park decorated fully with Christmas lights and decorations, so you and your family can walk through and enjoy the scenery.

This Kauai Christmas event also offers indoor setups for decorations, and you can meet with Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Things To Do On Christmas Eve & Christmas Day When Everywhere is Closed

If you are wondering what to do in Hawaii in December on Christmas Day, here are a few ideas.

Whale Watching

During the months of November to mid-April, there are active whale migrations that you can observe.

Depending on your location, several companies offer whale-watching tours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Maui is known for their amazing whale watching boat tours that leave from Lahaina

Maui is a popular spot for Christmas Day whale watching, this company even offers Maui Christmas cruises where you can watch the whales while you eat dinner.

Hawaii trips in December are perfect for whale-watching!

I’ve got full guides to whale watching on Maui and Kauai that include whale watching tours if you’re looking to book out around Christmas.

Chinatown Winter Walk

Honolulu is a beautiful city, and Chinatown is also a spectacle of Christmas cheer during the month of December.

The Chinatown Winter Walk is a self-guided walk-through of Chinatown’s shopping district where shopkeepers compete to have the best window display. It is available to the public on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

National Parks and Beaches

If you and your family want to get out and do something active, then you can enjoy any of the Hawaii National Parks at any time of the year! That means Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

You can also visit any of the public beaches if you want to build sandmen and take a dip in the ocean.

Christmas on Hawaii isn’t Christmas until you make a sand snowman!

Christmas Cruise from Lahaina

Because of the recent Lahaina fire, this tour is currently unavailable.

If you’re spending Christmas in Maui , this is a fun Maui brunch or dinner cruise. You’ll get to enjoy delicious food at a private table while gazing out at the stunning view of West Maui.

There’s also live Hawaiian music to get you in the spirit!

Magical Christmas at Rock-A-Hula

If you’re looking for a fun Waikiki Christmas event , you might book tickets for the Magical Christmas at Rock-A-Hula . It’s a dinner show that’s fun for your whole family! Read my full Rock-A-Hula review .

Attend a Christmas Luau

Another way to make Christmas Day in Hawaii a bit more fun is to attend a luau. I did a quick search and found that the following Hawaii luaus are hosting Christmas luaus:

Oahu Christmas Luaus

  • Germaine’s Luau
  • Paradise Cove Luau

Maui Christmas Luaus

  • Drums of the Pacific Luau at Hyatt Regency Maui

Big Island Christmas Luaus

  • Hawaii Loa Kohala Luau at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel

Best Restaurants To Eat Christmas Dinner At On December 25th

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years when traveling to Hawaii for Christmas is that it can be tricky to find somewhere to eat. Here are a few places that are open on Christmas Day that are worth making a reservation for.

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse

This popular steakhouse is available on a few different islands, and they are open to serve you on Christmas Day. Find Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse Hawaii locations HERE .

Another popular option to celebrate the New Year in Hawaii is a dinner cruise. There are many different companies and areas that offer these, but they usually allow for a beautiful view of fireworks while drifting out to sea.

The top pick for Waikiki is this Star of Honolulu New Year’s Eve Midnight Celebration Dinner Cruise .

They also provide spectacular dinner options, with the option for alcoholic drinks, or not, if you are enjoying the time with your children. Read our full Star of Honolulu review .

Waikiki New Year’s Fireworks

Waikiki throws a particularly awesome firework show that helps you ring in the New Year. You can see these fireworks from the beach, park, and even some hotels.

This event also hosts a party of the year at Aloha Marketplace Tower, showcasing DJs and live performances.

Fukubukuro at Ala Moana Center

One of the best New Year’s Day events is Fukubukuro . This is a Japanese New Year event where people pay for mystery bags at stores throughout the mall. You pay a discounted price for a grab bag.

We did this many years ago, and it’s one of my favorite shopping memories!

How To Handle Santa & Presents While In Hawaii For Christmas With Kids

We talked about the Hawaiian way of Santa’s arrival above, so it only makes sense that he would know your kids are in Hawaii instead of at their house!

To make it truly feel like Christmas, you should still decorate your vacation home or hotel room and bring along a few of your family’s presents.

Find out how to handle Christmas presents in Hawaii. Image of a little pile of presents on a wood table.

While traveling with presents may be difficult if you have bought your children large gifts, it may be best to plan for smaller or minimal gifts when you know you will be traveling to Hawaii in Christmas for the holidays.

In the past, we’ve saved the larger gifts for our kids to open once we got back home. These are usually big LEGO sets and things I know our kids would want to play with as soon as they open.

For older kids, you can give them cash/gift cards to go shopping in Hawaii. Or you can do experience gifts where each kid gets to pick an activity, like going ziplining or swimming with dolphins .

Decorating For Christmas While in Hawaii

When it comes to decorating for the holiday while in your vacation home, you should use local styles, such as beautiful Hawaiian flowers and minimalistic lights on your tree and house.

The Christmas poinsettia is also in full bloom during this time on the islands, which is perfect for decorations.

When it comes to a tree, it is quite impractical to pack a fake tree to travel with, so it is a better option to try and find something once you arrive.

I’ve seen people hang little ornaments on the leaves of a pineapple. Or they get a mini tree from Target to put somewhere in their hotel room.

Image of a red stocking hanging in a palm tree in Hawaii.

If your family has a tradition of hanging stockings, it would be fairly easy to pack these and hang them for the holidays in your vacation home.

If you have younger children, you want to maintain the “magic of Christmas” even during your vacation. So, if you have any family traditions for Christmas, try to find ways to incorporate them.

To Bring the Elf or Not To Bring the Elf, That is the Question

The Elf on the Shelf is a very popular tradition for younger children, and you may be wondering if you should bring it with you on your vacation.

If you have younger children who are invested in this tradition, then you should absolutely bring it!

Even though you are on vacation, you still want your children to enjoy the Christmas magic and don’t want to feel as if they have confused Santa or their elf by going to Hawaii for the holidays.

It is also fun and exciting to watch their faces as they find their holiday friend around their temporary holiday home. You can even have your elf wear a little Aloha shirt or a hula skirt to really go all out!

Hawaii Christmas FAQs

Yes! While traditional Christmas trees (like pine trees and Noble firs) don’t grow in Hawaii, they are actually shipped to the islands each holiday season. You’ll mostly see these in hotel lobbies or in shopping areas. Additionally, you’ll also see a lot of palm trees with tropical decor!

Absolutely! While Santa is known for vacationing in Hawaii during his off-season, he also makes a special arrival in Hawaii. He comes by outrigger canoe! There are a few places for Santa meet & greets and photos on most of the islands.

If you’re heading to Hawaii in December, you’ll definitely hear Hawaiian Christmas carols in stores and restaurants. Bing Crosby’s Mele Kalikimaka is by far the most famous. Willie K’s version of O Holy Night is another good one. And you’ll definitely want to hear the local favorite Numbah One Day of Christmas .

I think visiting Hawaii over Christmas is a great idea! You will get to see a different side of the islands and enjoy all the fun Christmas Hawaii traditions.

Christmas in Hawaiian language is Mele Kalikimaka.

What is the Temperature Like in December?

Contrary to how low the temperatures can drop on the Mainland, Hawaii is warm no matter the season. On your trip, expect it to be around 81 degrees. Though Hawaii temperatures in December are somewhat cooler than the temperatures in the summer, it can still be quite hot and humid.

On the “chillier” side, you can expect it to get down to the mid-70s with very short rainstorms now and then. Goes to show how perfect the Christmas weather in Hawaii is.

What Should I Wear in Hawaii in December?

Your typical summer clothes are perfect for Hawaiian December.

For those who get a bit chilly in the 70-degree range, I’d recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater when it cools off at night. T-shirts , shorts , breezy or thin dresses/skirts , and swimsuits are the way to go.

What Should I Pack for Christmas in Hawaii?

There’s plenty to think about when packing for Hawai, especially during Christmas, no less. When packing, you’ll have to think about the clothes you’ll be wearing every day, what you’ll need for going to the beach or exploring, and space to bring presents to or back. And don’t worry, everything you’ll need is right here.

How long you’ll be there is a big factor in packing for your trip. Depending on how many days you decide to stay, adjust the numbers to accommodate the number of days.

If you’re looking for lists for more specific islands, I have a Kauai packing list , an Oahu packing list , a Big Island packing list , and a Maui packing list for you to check out!

Travel Documents

Of course, some of the essentials you can’t get anywhere without are your travel documents. No matter where you go, remember to pack:

  • Credit cards
  • Emergency contact lists
  • Vaccine records, if needed
  • Passport (for non-U.S. citizens)
  • Reservations for hotel, resort, and tours6
  • Plane tickets

Many of these are accessible through your phone or other digital means, but keeping a physical copy for extra security never hurts. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Unless you plan to do some laundry, one of the biggest things to consider is if you have enough clothes for the entire trip.

Here’s the list of what to wear in Hawaii in December.

  • T-shirts
  • Shorts
  • Skirts
  • Underclothing and socks
  • Plenty of swimsuits
  • Swimsuit cover
  • Dresses
  • Pajamas
  • Lightweight jackets

The best clothes to wear in Hawaii in the wintertime are light or airy fabrics so you can stay cool. Clothes made of cotton, silk, or rayon are the best, and for humid weather, try out clothes made of bamboo.

While you might not want to wear jeans, you at least want to include one pair of pants for your “Packing for Hawaii” list for when the temperature drops or you go out for a hike.

Find out what to pack for winter in Hawaii. Christmas tree with christmas balls, slippers and starfish on the sand on beach

The next thing you want to remember in your Christmas packing list for Hawaii is shoes. While sandals are great for idle relaxation, if you plan to do a lot of moving around, whether it be a tour or exploring, you should also bring some comfortable walking shoes such as tennis shoes .

If you want to try out some of Hawaii’s amazing hiking spots, you should bring a pair of hiking shoes . You can also try out water shoes if you’re thinking of exploring rocky beaches.

Technology Gear

For anyone looking to keep memories of your trip through pictures or videos, one of the best packing tips for Hawaii is to bring a waterproof phone case .

They’re very handy for when you’re you’re at the beach, exploring, or doing anything where your phone is at risk to get dirty or wet. Take pictures without worry with one of these!

GoPros and waterproof cameras are also great things to bring. And since you’re packing for Hawaii’s holiday season, consider bringing a nice camera to take some lovely photos with friends and family. Don’t forget to bring an SD card for all your pictures and videos.

And definitely don’t forget to bring your phone’s charger (it never hurts to put it on your list as a precaution.) Also, if you plan to work a bit during your trip, make sure to put your laptop on your packing list too.

Book a Hawaii Photo Shoot

Whenever we travel to Hawaii, we almost always book a photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND it guarantees that I’ll have more than just selfies. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.

Accessories and Personal Items

Extra gear and utilities are also some of the essentials you need if you’re vacationing. In Hawaii, however, here are the things you’ll need:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Bug spray or bug bands
  • Vitamins and medicine
  • Water bottle
  • Reef safe sunscreen
  • Fanny pack, backpack, or purse

Depending on where you stay, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash may be provided for you. But if where you’re staying doesn’t provide them, or you’d like to use your personal hair products, remember to include them in your packing list for Hawaii.

Christmas Items

And since this guide is also about Christmas in Hawaii, here are some extra packing tips for you for Hawaii’s holiday season.

Extra Space

Another great tip is to try and leave some extra space in your luggage. Chances are you’ll be coming back with souvenirs and presents , so you’ll want to make sure you have the space to fit them in your suitcase. You don’t want to have to buy a whole extra suitcase just for your mementos.

Should you pack Christmas presents?

If you’re planning to visit friends or family during your trip, or if you’re going to spend Christmas day on the island and want to hand out gifts for your party there, save a bit of space to fit your gifts into your luggage.

Should you pack Christmas presents for your trip to Hawaii? Image of Colorful gifts boxes. Heap of different gift boxes on wooden table. Christmas presents.

Usually, you’ll want to pack your presents unwrapped . Otherwise, you risk TSA opening up your presents to see what’s inside. Thankfully, you can find cute Hawaiian wrapping paper in Hawaii.

However, if you’re planning to buy your presents in Hawaii, remember that they will probably be a bit pricier. If you’d rather use your luggage space for packing and you’re ok with gift exchanging when you get home, it’s best to keep your gifts at home.

Holiday Clothing

If you’ll be visiting the family over Christmas, make sure to bring some pretty clothes for your perfect Christmas photo. And since it’s Christmas, dresses or shirts with red and green are the way to go.

But if your luggage is too stuffed with gifts, there’s no harm in patronizing a local Hawaii boutique or even Target for a nice shirt. You could even try to get your group to try some matching shirts!

And that’s my list of what to pack for Hawaii in December to make sure your vacation runs smoothly. While every traveler may have different things they might also like to bring, that’s the general guide on how to pack for Hawaii’s holiday season.

Things to Do in Hawaii in December

Curious as to how Hawaii likes to celebrate December 25th? Here’s a not-so-secret secret: it’s like everywhere else! Even without the cold or the snow, Christmas in Hawaii is just as vibrant as anywhere else. Below you can find some Christmasy and wintery activities for you to try out.

If you and your party want to go the extra mile, why not have a sandman building contest? You can even ice out your sandmen with some sunglasses or a lei!

Christmas in Hawaii FAQs

Hawaii is the best place for a vacation because of how warm it stays year-round, even in the winter. Temperatures at the very lowest are only 75 degrees, so you can rest assured that you won’t need any thick sweaters or jackets in your luggage.

While you can’t find snow falling from above as you walk around town, you can still find places in Hawaii with a good amount of snow. On both Maui and the Big Island, you can find snow on the tops of certain mountains. There’s even enough snow to go snowboarding or skiing there too!

Definitely! Hawaii waters are warm enough year-round for swimming, so trying out winter swimming is a fun and unique experience that you’re able to do!

READY TO PLAN YOUR TRIP TO HAWAII?

can you visit hawaii in december

This Step-by-Step Workbook & Journal Will Help!

I went to Hawaii for the first time. My trip would've been better if I'd known these 5 things before I left.

  • I visited Hawaii for the first time, and there are things I wish I'd known before the trip.
  • Figuring out that there's more than one Leonard's Bakery on Oahu would've saved me some stress.
  • I also wish I'd known how easy it would be to get around the island — I could've explored even more.

Insider Today

Well over 1 million people have already visited the Hawaiian Islands this year, and I was lucky enough to be one of them.

I went on a nine-day trip to Oahu that included a stay at Disney's Aulani Resort in Ko Olina.

Because this was my first time visiting Hawaii, I tried to do as much research as possible before my trip. But after arriving, I still wished I'd known a few things.

I thought it would be much harder to get around the island.

can you visit hawaii in december

Before leaving for Oahu, I'd heard from friends and read on social-media groups that getting around could be difficult. My fears of sitting in traffic for the whole week set in before I even stepped foot off the plane.

In reality, my family and I never got stuck in gridlocked traffic over our six days on the island.

A hotel worker we met said no matter what part of the island you were on, the big secret was to head out after 9 a.m. and try to make your way back either before 3 p.m. or after 6 p.m.

My family and I followed this rule every day of our trip and never had much traffic to deal with while we traveled from Ko Olina to Pearl Harbor and Ko Olina to the North Shore.

We also found the drivers to be much more courteous than we're used to back in Florida. No one weaved in and out of the cars around us.

The kind of sunscreen you pack matters.

can you visit hawaii in december

My packing list for Hawaii was long, but one of the most important items was sunscreen. Hawaii is close to the equator, so the UV rays are even stronger on the islands.

But I wished I'd known more about the islands' rules around reef-safe sunscreen before I started packing.

Hawaii passed a law banning the sale of sunscreens with the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate that went into effect in 2021. And some counties allow only mineral-based sunscreens.

I ended up using Sun Bum sunscreen throughout my stay, and now that I know more, I'll continue to use it in Florida to help protect coral reefs.

I wish I'd known there's more than one Leonard’s Bakery on the island.

can you visit hawaii in december

One of the most talked about spots on Oahu is Leonard's Bakery , known for its Portuguese-style doughnuts named malasadas.

The main store is near Honolulu, which was about a 40-minute drive from where we were staying. I'd pretty much accepted that we'd have to budget a few hours one day to try the sugary treats.

But once we landed on Oahu, we noticed a Leonard's Bakery food truck — lovingly named Malasadamobiles — about 10 minutes from the resort.

The truck dished out hot malasadas to order, but it didn't offer the main bakery's extended menu. That was the only real trade-off for us, but it was worth it to save on driving time.
