preview for 30 Questions To Ask To Get To Know Someone

When you first start dating, questions and conversations help you to explore if you're a good match. As the relationship progresses, understanding what the other person needs to take care of their mind and body, supporting their dreams, and knowing what makes them feel fulfilled and joyful can keep the connection strong.

“Relationships, like our bodies, need maintenance," says Carol Bruess, PhD, a professor at the University of St. Thomas and a relationship social scientist. "Making time for deep conversations, ones during which we prioritize fully hearing and listening with an open mind and heart to another’s stories is a relationship vitamin.”

Conversations like this can also be a good way to experience each other’s energy. Now, when you think of deep questions to ask your S.O., you’re probably thinking they’re going to unload all of their trauma. But it isn’t your responsibility to carry that pain and it is better to focus on what brings the other joy rather than what has brought each other pain in the past, says Katya Burdo, PhD, a clinical psychologist based in Boston.

Meet the Experts: Carol Bruess , PhD is a relationship social scientist and professor emerita of journalism at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Katya Burdo , PhD is a clinical psychologist based in Boston. Jocelyn Charnas , PhD is a clinical psychologist based in New York City. Juanita Guerra , PhD is a clinical psychologist and hypnotherapist based in New York City. Marisa T. Cohen , PhD, LMFT is a therapist and relationship researcher at Hily app.

No matter what you talk about, spending intentional time actively listening to and speaking to your partner with the utmost vulnerability will build your bond.

"Relationships are created, sustained, changed, and nourished through conversations," Bruess says. "Intentionally giving others our attention, the kind where our entire body, mind, soul is fully present, where we are radically listening to another, soaking in whatever they are saying, expressing, sharing, or even what they are not saying—is one of the most intimate, nourishing acts in a relationship ."

How To Make Time For Deep Conversations

Try to routinely set aside time so that you can prioritize these deep conversations. Bruess recommends aiming for these talks once a week.

“A couple can create a simple daily or weekly ritual for nourishing their connection: declaring Sunday morning coffee as 15 minutes of conversation time during which they share two things from the past week that they appreciated about the other , and one thing they need from each other in the week ahead,” says Bruess. Coffee and a nice convo are a perfect way to start the week and a great step toward committing to each other. “Relationships are daily choices,” Bruess adds.

Ahead, find a list of questions to get those deep convos flowing.

Questions About Happiness

Knowing when your partner feels happiest can help you better understand them. And when both of you know when the other feels most free and fulfilled, it's easier to encourage the conditions that foster joy.

  • When do you feel most free?
  • When do you feel most joyful?
  • When do you feel most fulfilled?
  • When do you feel at peace?
  • Where is your safe space?

  • What makes you laugh?
  • What helps you feel grounded?
  • What helps you feel more "you"?

Questions About Dreams

These kinds of questions are helpful for managing expectations, says Jocelyn Charnas, PhD, a clinical psychologist in private practice in Manhattan. “You’d be surprised how often I sit in my office with a new couple, and they haven’t done a lot of communication on very specific things in terms of where they want to live and even if they want to have children,” she says.

Even if your partner’s ideal situation isn’t totally realistic or likely to happen, it can get you to talk about your own perfect scenario and how these two match up, she says. Keep in mind, though, that “they don’t necessarily have to be aligned, one to one,” Charnas says.

Plus, supporting each other's dreams, no matter how unrealistic and improbable they may be, is imperative in connecting with your partner. Expressing your dreams with each other will help both of you reach alignment within yourself and find fulfillment and joy.

Questions About Self-Care

Valuing self-care is the greatest way to prepare yourself for intimacy—and for creating a deeper bond with your S.O., says Burdo. It's important to understand what your partner needs to take care of themselves, and how much time and space they need alone.

“It tells you what they like and what makes them feel good," says licensed clinical psychologist Juanita Guerra, PhD. This can also help you see what’s most important to them—and that’s info you can mine in the future when it comes to treating them well.

Questions About Your Relationship

Never underestimate the power of a relationship check-in. Whether you have them once a month or once a year, there's always something to learn from your partner as your relationship evolves. "In relationships, we always make assumptions based on what we think and have experienced before. Having regular check-ins with your partner will greatly improve your understanding of your partner’s perspectives and perceptions that affect your relationship," says Marisa T. Cohen, PhD, LMFT, a relationship researcher at the Hily app.

Think of it as a way of getting in front of any potential miscommunications or problems before they arise. "It’s best to be proactive, not just react to problems that are already there," adds Cohen.

  • What in this relationship has been hard for you to deal with?

Questions About Sex

Sex is undoubtedly an important part of a relationship. This includes how often you like to have sex, the kind of sex you like to have, and how you define sex in general. If you already have a good sense that the two of you are sexually compatible, you can ask more specific questions.

And yes, you should set up a time to talk about sex. "The best time to have a discussion about sex is when both partners agree that they are able to," says Cohen. "The conversation requires vulnerability, so it’s important that it's not rushed or done at a time when a person’s attention is divided." In other words, talking to your partner about the new advanced-level sex position you want to try should not happen while they're washing the dishes. You also don't want to wait until things are getting hot and heavy to talk about it, either.

  • What does desire mean to you?
  • What does pleasure mean to you?
  • How would you define great sex?
  • What turns you on?

Questions About Past Relationships

It goes without saying that your past can influence your present, which is why talking to your partner about past relationship(s) is a no-brainer. Triggers, frustrations, and other feelings can bleed from one relationship into the next. Talking with your partner about their experiences—and yours—can give you insight into each other and your expectations.

That said, past relationships can be a touchy subject, so keeping things open and honest will make a world of difference. "The basic rule is to discuss all the questions that influence your connection and affect your lives as individuals," says Cohen. "Don’t bottle up your feelings. Be open and genuinely interested in exploring your partner’s life." And if strong emotions come up while talking through it all, approaching them with curiosity and trying to source where they stem from can benefit the conversation.

  • What in past relationships has been hard for you to deal with?
  • What kinds of crushes did you have growing up?
  • Who was the first person you ever really liked?

Tips for Making a Game Date with Your Girlfriend More Fun

Planning a fun game night with your girlfriend? The activities you choose are important, but your attitude and approach matter too. Follow these tips to ensure you both have the best time playing games together:

By all means, try your best to win during competition. But avoid trash talk or gloating that could dampen the fun. Keep the mood lighthearted – it's about bonding, not winning.

Mix up the genres and types of games you play over time. Alternate between physical games, video games, board games, made-up challenges, etc. Variety keeps things interesting.

Enhance games with thematic decor, snacks, or music to set the mood. Dim the lights for suspenseful games or play tropical music during island simulation games. Get creative with themes!

Schedule occasional breaks for snuggling, conversation, snacks, or bathroom trips. Breaks give you time to reconnect in between focused gameplay.

Encourage silliness and customize games by establishing unique “house rules” for more laughs. Adjust rules to suit your preferences.

If you or your partner just aren’t feeling a particular game, switch to something else. Go with the flow based on your moods.

Above all, avoid pressuring each other and remember the purpose is to enjoy quality time together. Keep the date light and playful.

Following these suggestions will lead to an awesome games date guaranteed to bring you closer and create great memories! What games will you play first?

Absolutely, consider recommendations! Other couples may offer great game ideas you haven't thought of. But make final choices based on your tastes.

Take turns choosing games , flip a coin, or randomly draw a game name out of a hat. This keeps it fair and gives you both power over the selection.

Definitely, games encourage clearer communication, listening skills, compromising, and expressing yourselves. Any game that involves teamwork or negotiating will help build communication abilities.

If tensions rise, suggest taking a quick break to cool off. Remind your partner it's just a game, and you're there to have fun together, not get worked up. Lighten the mood.

Schedule game nights into your calendar like regular date nights. Make gaming together a consistent priority like other quality time. It will quickly feel natural.

A romantic go-to for teenagers since the 40s. The great thing is, you don’t even have to be teens to enjoy this activity. All you need is a car, and preferably some good music playing on the radio.

Nothing says romance like showing public affection. Kissing in public may be annoying to onlookers, but it proves that you would give her love wherever you are, as long as you’re together. You just might have to ignore the people yelling “get a room!” as they walk by.

15. Go to a drive-in movie

I don’t know what it is about drive-in theaters , but they have a more romantic quality than regular movie theaters. Either way, if you’re in a drive-in movie, you’ll be alone in your car and can enjoy each other’s company without bothering the other people in their own cars.

17. Go to an open house

18. Make each other breakfast in bed

Sometimes you just don’t feel like getting up and making breakfast for yourself. Maybe treat your girlfriend and make a great breakfast to enjoy in her bed. Anyone would appreciate such a kind and simple gesture.

How to Pick The Best Romantic Thing To Do For Your Girlfriend

If you're still not quite sure about how to "make the move," don't worry. Picking the right romantic thing to do for your girlfriend isn't always easy.

You can refer to this guide to find the best choice for that special girl in your life.

1. Keep It Fun

a couple smiling at each other while riding the carousel

It's always great to show that you care, but sometimes romance can get a little too intense if you're not careful.

While you should be passionate about your girl, keeping it light-hearted and innocent makes it less awkward. Don't be afraid to crack a joke or two .

2. Consider Her Personality

Not all girls have the same idea about what's romantic. Some might prefer a more serious approach, while others may enjoy something fun and exciting.

When choosing what you're gonna do for your girl, think about what would really blow  her  socks off. Don't just pick something because it sounds safe or mainstream. Make it special for her .

3. Not Everything You Do Have To Cost Money

Not every date has to cost you an arm and a leg. And you don’t have to just buy your significant other’s love through gifts. Sometimes the most personal moments come free, so be sure to create opportunities that let you spend time with each other without spending money.

4. Get Creative

It’s always a pleasure to go on a date that is unconventional and exciting. Try thinking outside the box and see how creative your date ideas can get. Showing your love for someone in a creative way that is unique to you can be really romantic. After all, if all you do is go to the same restaurant and give them the same gifts over and over again might get stale. Keep it exciting and get creative!

5. Make It Personal

A box of chocolates or a night out to a fancy restaurant are both fine romantic gestures, but are they personal? Sometimes these basic romantic gestures can seem more like an obligation, and not something with true meaning. If you really want to woo someone with romance, get them a gift that is really thoughtful and that shows that you are thinking about them. You can take them on a date somewhere that means something to your relationship. Sometimes, this extra effort of really thinking and making your romantic gestures mean something more will strengthen your relationships.

6. Don't Expect Anything In Return

closeup shot of a couple dancing happily

Doing romantic things for your girlfriend should be non-reciprocal. You should do this because you  want to , not because you feel like you should get something back in return.

On that note, spontaneity is great in this situation. Doing romantic things out of the blue is much better than doing something for her birthday or for her anniversary. Why? Because it's unexpected! So much more romantic.

Sometimes, coming up with a date activity that's as exciting and unique as your relationship can be just as difficult as finding the right person to take out on that date in the first place. Whether you're driving the carpool, commuting for work or you've got just 20 steps between your bed and your desk and back again, most of us just don't have a lot of creative juices left for planning at the end of a long day. And let's face it, dinner-and-a-movie gets a little stale after awhile, especially if you've been in the dating game for some time.

Whatever your dating personality, there's bound to be something to fit the bill on this master list of create date night ideas . Whether you're looking for indoor date night ideas for inclement weather, long-distance dates for when you and your main squeeze are apart or even first date ideas to break the ice, there's something for every type of couple, activity preference, level of DIY skills and budget. We've got enough to last you a few year's worth of weekends.

  • Restaurant hop. If you've got your favorite spot's menu just about memorized, check out a few new places instead. Visit a food hall if you've got one nearby or head to an area with a few different restaurants and try one place for appetizers, another for dinner and a third for dessert.
  • Play tourist in your hometown. When was the last time you took advantage of the things everyone asks to see when they visit? Probably the last time you had out-of-town guests, that's when. Take an afternoon or an evening and hit up your local landmarks or must-see attractions like you're seeing them with fresh eyes.
  • Make a fun new recipe. Even if you're not much of a cook, trying out a new dish can result in lots of laughs. And when you're done, you get to eat the results.
  • Go on a picnic. If it's nice outside, there's nothing more romantic than packing up some al fresco food and favorite beverages, spreading it on a blanket and enjoying the great outdoors. If the weather outside is frightful, move the party to your living room.
  • Take a hike. Something about exploring nature with your main squeeze really gets the heart going in other ways, if you know what we mean.
  • Hit the beach. Sun, sand, surf and lots of skin. Come up with a better afternoon. We dare you.
  • Go skiing. Not beach weather? Hit the slopes instead. If you don't get hot cocoa afterward, it didn't count.
  • Play a board game. Drag out the classics or try a brand new one, for a healthy dose of competition. Toss in a friendly wager to spice things up a little.
  • Throw a casino night . If they call you Lady Luck, see if your partner can roll snake eyes and win your heart. That, or play cards with that week's chore list on the line.
  • Build a campfire. Ignite the flames of passion in a Smokey-approved way by gathering around a campfire in your backyard. If your municipality doesn't allow fires, huddle by the fireplace instead or even make s'mores in the microwave.
  • Have a spa night. Hit up the drugstore for face masks , mani-pedi supplies and massage oil for a DIY pampering sesh that will improve your bond and your skin.
  • Take a day trip. Hop in your car and see where a tank of gas can take you. Even checking out the next town over can feel like an adventure, especially when you're doing it with your favorite person.
  • Go grocery shopping together. Need eggs and bread? Turn a boring chore into a fun couple activity. Split your list in half and race to see who can finish it first, or just wander the aisles hand-in-hand.
  • Learn a new skill. You don't need to invest in a lot of fancy equipment to try something new. Give origami, drawing or even card tricks a shot. You'll have a blast laughing over how bad you both are, at first.
  • Play hide 'n seek. It's not just for kids anymore.
  • Look through old photos. Pull out the albums and get ready for an awwww-fest. Share stories of your childhoods and your awkward teen years to learn something new about your sweetheart and grow to love them even more.
  • Go antique hunting. You'll be amazed what kinds of gems you can find at an antique store, not to mention the creepy AF tchotchkes you'll run into.
  • Take a dance class. Even (or especially!) if you have two left feet, taking a dance class can make a unique date. You'll be the talk of the dance floor at the next wedding or party when you bust a move.
  • Volunteer together. Sign up to serve at a soup kitchen, a clothing drive or other local initiative to make a difference in your community and see how hot your honey looks when helping others.
  • Visit the zoo or aquarium. Come on, even fish are cute. Show your sensitive side and squee over some new fuzzy or finned friends.
  • Read to each other. Grab some steamy reading from your local library or used book store and take turns reading to each other. You'll be in the mood before you can say "once upon a time."
  • Explore a museum. If you haven't been to your nearest museum since your class field trip, it's time to make a trip. Learning is sexy, don't you think?
  • Go out for dessert. I don't know about you, but I'm always too full to get dessert after a nice dinner. Skip right to the sweets, and see what you've been missing.
  • Commandeer the jukebox at a bar. Ensure you've got danceable tunes all night long by taking control of the jukebox at a local watering hole. Don't forget to sing along.
  • Make a craft together. Creativity feels even more satisfying when you do a project with your sweetheart. Don't worry if you're not a pro artist; there's beauty in imperfection.
  • See a comedy show. Laughing gets endorphins flowing, and comedy often comes cheaper than other forms of live entertainment. Even really bad standup can be fun, in its own way.
  • Go to an open house or estate sale. Even if you have zero plans to buy a home, looking inside someone else's is the best (and least creepy) kind of voyeurism.
  • Tackle a home improvement project. If you've been meaning to hang some shelves or finally cleaning out your closet, enlist the help of your main squeeze. Doing it together will make the task go by faster.
  • Go berry or apple-picking. Depending on the time of year, there's probably something edible growing out there. Pick apples, berries, pumpkins, whatever. It's a seasonal, Insta-friendly outing that ends with yummy snacks.
  • Hold a baking competition. Make like Paul Hollywood and challenge your beau to a baking contest . Once you're chowing down on the spoils, everyone wins.
  • Wander a new neighborhood. Drive or walk to a new locale and see what's around, for a free and unique date. Pick out your favorite houses and make up tall tales about who lives inside, or choose the one you'd want to live in.
  • Go horseback riding. It's a better workout than you expect, not to mention an offbeat way to get a good dose of nature.
  • Try rock-climbing . Thanks to its newfound trendiness, many cities have at least one climbing gym. Don't belay , chalk up those hands (sorry, not sorry).
  • Take a cooking class. Level up your kitchen know-how and get to enjoy a delicious meal, all in one.
  • Try a new fancy coffee or tea. If you usually take it black or with just sugar or cream, branch out! Hit up a local coffeeshop and try the most offbeat offering they've got.
  • Fly a kite. This is one instance in which "go fly a kite" isn't an insult. Really, try it.
  • Stay in a bed and breakfast. Whether you go old-school or rent an AirBnB for the night, bed and breakfasts feel like sneaking into someone else's house, except you're totally allowed to be there.
  • Go to a water park. Make like a kid again and splish splash to your heart's content. Water slides really are worth the hype.
  • Go to a farmer's market. Supporting local merchants, eating delicious healthy foods and enjoying a stroll in the sunshine – yup, that's definitely date material.
  • Try a new workout. If you're a Spin person, drop in on a kickboxing class. If you're usually a free weights fan, step it up with some Zumba. Giving a new class a shot is less intimidating with a pal, and you can even use an app if you don't want to shell out for a live one.
  • Tour a brewery or winery. You'll learn what goes into making your favorite beverage, and there are usually samples. Win-win!
  • Stargaze together. There's just something inherently romantic about staring up at the night sky. Bring a blanket to the backyard or a local park and see how many constellations you can find.
  • Do karaoke. Everyone's a star at karaoke, especially if you can find the kind with private rooms. The sappier ballads you belt out, the better.
  • Go ax-throwing. As soon as you let the first one fly, you'll understand why ax-throwing is so popular. It's also a great way to unload some stress.
  • Put together a puzzle. There's something so satisfying about finally clicking that last piece into place, plus it's good for the ol' noodle.
  • Go bowling. This is one instance in which you actually want to strike out.
  • See a drive-in movie. Many drive-ins still play double features, so you get twice the films for your buck. Besides, it's delightfully retro.
  • Go skating. Whether you go the ice or roller route, skating is just as perfect a date night as it was when you were 12.
  • Take a wine tour. If you live near wine country, enlist a designated driver and get your grape on. If not, buy a few bottles of varietals you've never tried, print out some deets from the Internet and DIY it at home. Don't forget the cheese.
  • See a concert. Even terrible cover bands make a fun night out, especially if you dance like fools the whole time.
  • Cowork together. This is for the busy bees: If you and your sweetie work remotely, try out a cozy new coworking space together. Don't forget to build in breaks to grab snacks and lunch together.
  • Try a dinner cruise. A candlelit dinner on the water? I'm sorry, did somebody say "most romantic night ever?"
  • Rent a kayak or canoe. Your arms may get tired and your lap will definitely get soaked, but steering a double kayak or a canoe will give you new insight into your cooperation skills.
  • Make your own pizza. Yes, including the dough . Top it with all of the classics, or go with personal pies and challenge each other to come up with the tastiest new combo.
  • Take a dollar menu date. Go to a fast food restaurant and order everything on the dollar menu for a fresh take on the traditional dinner outing.
  • Visit your hometown. Showing your main squeeze where you grew up (or went to college if you're from the same town) is surprisingly romantic and it's sure to elicit some mushy feelings. Go ahead, share those embarrassing childhood stories.
  • Challenge them at an arcade. Go a few rounds at Ms Pacman and Big Deer Hunter for a unique night out that will bring out your competitive side.
  • Plan a future date. If your wallet's a little light right now, crack open a bottle of wine and spend a cozy night in planning an extravagant future date. Romantic, whether you actually go through with it or not.
  • Throw a dinner party together. Invite a few other couples over and go all out making an apps-to-dessert meal. Place cards and centerpieces optional, but if you're gonna do the thing, you might as well do it right.
  • Choose library books for each other. For a free and quirky date, head to your local library and choose books for the other to read. Hand your sweetheart your most awww-worthy childhood favorite, or introduce them to a current literary obsession .
  • Thrift new outfits. Visit a secondhand store and dress each other in the zaniest clothes you can find. Goofy photos mandatory.
  • Have a themed movie night. But make it a theme. Choose a flick and add snacks to match. Think The Godfather and cannoli or Ratatouille and, well, you know.
  • Make a romantic playlist. Remember when you used to exchange mix tapes with your crush back in the day? Thanks to streaming services, it's easier than ever to create a musical journey through your relationship, no sitting by the radio for hours required.
  • "Shop" for adoptable pets online. Cooing over cute puppies and kitties will bring out your softer side, even if you can't have a pet where you live.
  • Paint and sip. If you've got a paint nite program nearby, it's a fun and easy date. If not, get some canvasses (or coloring books), pour some bevvies and throw your own.
  • Try tie-dye. You may have noticed that all kinds of things are tie-dyed lately. Get in on the trend by making your own. Even if it doesn't come out perfectly, you'll have a fun memory.
  • Watch a sports game. Even high school sports can get your adrenaline going if you get really, really into it. And you definitely should.
  • Taste some cheese. Some cheese shops hold tasting events but if you don't have any near you, buy a few new-to-you varieties and DIY it.
  • Play laser tag. Recreate your 10th birthday party, except now you can have a beer with your pizza afterward.
  • Go skydiving. Yes, it's a little pricey and not for the faint of heart. But this is one of those special occasion dates you'll never forget. Try it for an anniversary or other big event.
  • Drive go-karts. Mario Kart experts and those who drive anything other than the carpool minivan can both rock a go-kart arena.
  • Train for a 5k. Having something to work toward will motivate you both, and you can keep each other accountable as you lay down those miles.
  • Go to a burlesque or drag show. Raucous, rowdy and a little bit risque, both drag and burlesque shows make super-fun dates.
  • Swap houses with a friend. Enjoy a staycation for free by exchanging houses with a nearby pal. Living in someone else's shoes for the night or weekend feels like stepping into someone else's life, even if you just bunk down next door.
  • Build a snowman (or a sand sculpture) . Make the most of the weather by creating a new friend.
  • Shop for charity. Food pantries, homeless shelters and community organizations need supplies all year round. Spread the love while spending quality time with your partner.
  • Watch the sunset. There's a reason so many romantic movies end this way.
  • Take public transit somewhere new. Ride the subway to the end of the line or take the bus to a different part of town for an adventure that's easy on the wallet.
  • Order each other's meal. See how well you know your loved one's tastes by ordering for the other at dinner. No swapping back when the food arrives!
  • Listen to podcasts. For a twist on the usual movie night, cuddle up and turn on a podcast instead.
  • Do couples' yoga. Getting bendy together can really heat things up, plus you're doing something good for your body and mind.
  • Play "never have I ever." Asking each other to get deep can reveal some new things about your loved one.
  • Make a video together. The only thing more fun than watching reality TV is making your own. Use your phone to shoot a cooking video, do a tutorial or even give each other makeovers.
  • Go low-tech. Pretend the power went out and have a no-tech evening. Yes, that includes your phones.
  • Relive a past vacation. Put on your swimsuits, shake up some margaritas and look at photos of your last beach getaway. You'll almost feel the sand between your toes.
  • Play a role-playing game. Former theater kids, this is your moment. Try a classic like Dungeons and Dragons or an online game to step outside yourselves for awhile.
  • Write each other love letters. Getting your feelings down on paper can ignite some real sparks, plus create a keepsake for years to come.
  • Climb your family tree. Sit down with Ancestry.com and learn about your backgrounds. Or even better, interview an elderly family member to get personal stories about where you came from.
  • Go for ice cream. Nothing tastes as good as a cone on a hot day, but we scream for ice cream on chilly afternoons, too. Set up a sundae bar for a real treat.
  • Stroll a street fair. Chow down on some fried dough, bask in the midway lights and win each other a stuffed toy – if you've got the skills.
  • Have a photo shoot. Make like influencers and take photos of each other around town. You may even come up with your next holiday card.
  • Listen to a lecture. Many local colleges, libraries and community centers have evening events that are open to the public. Plus, you'll get all sorts of tidbits for future cocktail party conversation.
  • Take an improv class. Embracing the concept of saying "yes, and" is a lesson that also works well in your offstage life.
  • Cultivate a garden. Even if you live in an apartment, try your hand at growing a window garden . Plants make any dwelling feel like a home.
  • Build a bucket list. Sit down together and think big: No item is too out-there or mundane to plan ahead for the rest of your life as a couple.

The Best Trips to Take with Your Girlfriends

with tour girl

Wanderlust got you mapping nearby destinations for a weekend jaunt? It's time to call up the girls for a quick trip. It's time to call up the girls for a trip. If y'all are itching to pack your bags, jump in the car, and invest in some overdue quality time, we have the perfect places for a girlfriend getaway. Whether your ideal itinerary includes shopping, dining, museum hopping, outdoor adventure, or a little bit of everything, the South has so many scenic destinations that are fantastic for keeping everyone entertained. These Southern cities, towns, and islands are ready to be explored.

Here are 25 trips perfect for making memories with your girlfriends.

Birmingham, Alabama

Magic City Living

There's even more to the " Magic City " than meets the eye. Spend most of your time outside at Railroad Park, Regions Field for a ballgame, or Pepper Place Market on Saturday mornings, or crossing off titles on the rockstar lineup of restaurants. Meander between downtown Homewood, Mountain Brook Village, English Village, and Avondale to see the best of the city.

A perfect Saturday? Start with brunch at The Essential, head to Ghost Train or Back Forty for one of Birmingham's signature brews , enjoy the weather at Railroad Park or the stunning Botanical Gardens, and then make sure to hit one of Frank Stitt's places, particularly Chez Fonfon (get the coconut cake!), or one of Chris Hasting's, such as Ovenbird.

Lexington, Kentucky

Horse Country Escape

In Lexington, you're right in the heart of Horse Country, the Bourbon Trail , and everything else downtown Lexington has to offer. Dudley's on Short is a must-hit brunch spot, and the deviled eggs are heavenly.

Spend your days right outside of town touring horse farms and meeting Kentucky Derby winners, as well as famed distilleries such as Woodford or Buffalo Trace before heading back into town to enjoy more urban pursuits. The Distillery District boasts restaurants and bars worth a visit.

Fernandina Beach, Florida

Harbor Town Haunt

For a laidback girls' trip, look no further than this funky beach town. A harbor town at heart, this spot has come a long way since pirates ruled the roost. Think more along the lines of old-fashioned ice cream parlors, a charming French restaurant in a tiny house, called Le Clos, and The Palace Saloon, Florida's oldest bar that stayed open through Prohibition.

Depending on the time of year, you might get lucky enough to hit it during one of the town's various festivals. Round out your trip with a jaunt along the area's gorgeous beaches and lush wildlife.

Round Top, Texas

Antique Adventure

This tiny Texas town is full of quirky surprises, which makes it perfect for a group that wants to blaze a trail and try something new. For starters, people from all over come into town twice a year for the biannual outdoor antiques fair that is basically an antique diver or flea market finder's dream. If you act quick, reserve one of The Silos at 159's rentals, which have fashioned Anthropologie-worthy tiny abodes from old converted silos.

Beyond the booths, you'll find year-round shops like Junk Gypsy and Humble Donkey Studio that will send you home with plenty of unique finds. But really, you can't leave without gathering the gang and heading to Royers Round Top Café, where pie is the star.

Orange, Virginia

Virginia Wine Country

This spot is just the thing for a group that wants R&R with a side of stunning views and lowkey activities. Located in the middle of historic sites like James Madison's Montpelier and wineries along the Monticello Wine Trail, Orange makes a proper home base.

Stay at the Inn at Willow Grove, an inn owned by couple Charlene and David Scibal. If you can drag yourself out of the plush accommodations, join the folks visiting nearby Shenandoah National Park , especially if traveling during peak fall color.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Do the Carolina Shag

Myrtle Beach is practically made for running around with your girlfriends like you're 18 again. We'd be remiss not to mention the most iconic pastimes. Head to The Bowery for the house band after getting the local-favorite She Crab Soup at oceanfront spot, Sea Captain's House. Another famous spot to dance the Carolina Shag to "beach music" is Fat Harold's Beach Club.

Nashville, Tennessee

The New Nashville

The Bluebird Café has long been the ultimate stop for singers destined to become country stars, but if you want a place a little less touristy, try out The Listening Room Café in the SoBro district. Make a reservation at Pearl Diver and sit amongst palm-frond wallpaper, seafoam booths, and coral stools. The bar cranks out very girls' trip-friendly drinks, such as a classic daiquiri with rum, pressed sugarcane, and lime.

If you're looking for a trendy spot with indoor and outdoor group activities, head to Pinewood Social. It's a hip restaurant with an in-house bowling alley for your best-ever group dinner yet.

Lake Toxaway, North Carolina

Lakeside Living

If your crew is into mega views (or Instagramming them), head up to the Blue Ridge Mountains to this large private lake that's so pretty it was once referred to as, "America's Switzerland," since it favored the Alp's characteristic mountainside lakes. It even served as the getaway destination of industry giants like the Rockefellers.

Stay at either the historic Greystone Inn or rent a home that comes with club amenities at the Lake Toxaway Country Club (like tennis, golf, water activities, and dining). We'd vote for an autumn trip date to catch all of the fall color reflecting off the crystal waters, but summer makes an equally fun pick.

Charleston, South Carolina

Port City Charm

Historic Charleston , South Carolina, is always quite the charmer. Walk the city and shop 'til you drop on King Street, or settle in on a carriage to see the sights sans Google Maps. Grab a park bench in Riley Waterfront Park, and watch the boats come and go. For a daytime activity, book afternoon tea at Camellias , the girly lounge inside Hotel Bennett. Later in the day, wander over to FIG or Husk for a delicious dinner with your best pals.

Jackson, Mississippi

Capital Fun

For a fun weekend getaway, visit Mississippi's state capital, which has plenty of up-and-coming areas to explore. No visit to Jackson is complete without a stop in the Fondren District, where you'll find cool shops and restaurants like Saltine, Fondren Public, and Brent's Drugs diner and soda fountain. In the evenings, the latter turns into The Apothecary at Brent's Drugs (pictured), where you can find a menu of expertly mixed cocktails. Don't miss Lemuria Book Store or the Mississippi Museum of Art, either.

Pawhuska, Oklahoma

Take a photo at the Southernmost Point, stop into the Hemingway House, and catch the sunset at Mallory Square. Even better? Make a week of it and plan a Keys road trip from Key Largo to Key West.

Choose Your Own (Texas) Adventure

There are a million things to do in Houston, so choose a neighborhood, book a hotel, and explore a pocket of this ever-growing metropolis. For a manageable slice of the city, book a room at Hotel ZaZa, shop your way through nearby Rice Village, and meander the Museum District, which is just blocks away. Then, set your sights on Montrose or Upper Kirby. The time to head to Houston is right now .

Savannah, Georgia

Georgia on Your Mind

This port city is a gorgeous coastal gem with leafy parks, plenty of great shopping, and a bustling historic district and riverwalk, where you'll find crowd-favorite restaurants like Huey's and Vic's on the River. New Orleans is an old, beautiful city with its own distinct, incomparable magic. The cool jazz and delicious cuisine of the Big Easy are calling to you and your girlfriends, and plan your ideal bar crawl using a guide to New Orleans nightlife .

Austin, Texas

Weird and Wonderful

Alexandria, Virginia

Slow Down A Bit

This place has a small-town feel, but it's close enough to Washington, D.C. for a day trip if you want big-city vibes. Or, if you want to stay out, take in a waterfront view of D.C. across the Potomac River. Alexandria also offers hundreds of independent restaurants and boutiques to explore, including a speakeasy donut shop .

Georgia Still on Your Mind

Atlanta is a great place to go for a group with diverse interests. The city has much to offer in the way of food, activities, and entertainment. The opportunities to explore seem endless.

Galveston, Texas

Haunts and Hauntings

This city has something for everyone. With Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Pleasure Pier, the Galveston Naval Museum, East Beach, the Galveston Island State Park, and more, Galveston has plenty to choose from . You can even take a ghost tour and learn about the city's haunts.

Miami, Florida

Hot, hot, hot

Miami is well-known for its beautiful sun-soaked beaches and nightlife opportunities. But did you know that August might just be the most opportune time to visit? It's when Miami's spa, restaurant, and hotel months overlap and create a perfect bubble to experience them all together.

Memphis, Tennessee

River City Fun

Go "city glamping" by the Mississippi River in a hotel that resembles Egyptian pyramids . Celebrate the annual Elvis Week in Graceland or enjoy the nightlife and live music on the city's infamous Beale Street. Memphis has a bevy of things to experience.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

Carolina Sand and Surf

The Outer Banks are tranquil and quaint. These barrier islands off the North Carolina coast—like Nags Head, Cape Lookout National Seashore, and Ocracoke—are also some of the most sought after beaches in the state. And there's plenty to do !

Tybee Island, Georgia

Georgia Peaches and Beaches

Tybee Island caters to a range of interests. For instance, North Beach is an energetic hangout, but Back River Beach is more quiet. Bonus: it's a short drive from downtown Savannah, with a plethora of wonderful restaurants, museums, boutiques, and bars.

If you want to test your relationship and how effectively you can work together when met with an obstacle, take your partner to an escape room. The idea is to solve puzzles and riddles in order to find your way out of a locked room in a limited amount of time.  It may sound easy, but it’s not!

PS: Escape rooms also make for excellent double dates!

Picking berries (especially during spring to summer) is another great outdoor activity that you can do with your partner. There are pick-your-own farms across different states where you can, well, pick your own berries (and other produce)! You can also forage for berries in the wild, but you would need a bit of knowledge to spot which ones are edible.

83. Hike a New Trail

Though a dinner cruise may feel a little touristy, it’s another romantic activity that works for both couples on a first date and couples that have been together forever. 87. Make a Sex Bucket List

Have you already put together your own sex bucket list or have you shied away from creating it? The reality is that sex is an entirely normal part of most adult’s life, and we’re more than allowed to enjoy it!

88. Jump Out of a Plane (Skydive!)

Since we are on a lifelong journey of making lasting memories with our partner, why not add something that goes above and beyond your comfort zone, like tandem skydiving? It can be a little frightening to some, but is definitely one for your adventure bucket list !

If jumping out of a plane is just too scary, then try indoor skydiving in a wind tunnel instead.

The holiday season can also be the time for romance. Set up mistletoe in your home and lead your heart’s beloved under it to gain the great excuse of kissing them.

96. Learn Your Love Language

One of the things that you will learn as a couple is expressing your love to each other. Are you the type who hugs and kisses your sweetheart every chance you get or are you someone who spends quality time with them, giving your undivided attention? Or maybe you are someone who likes giving thoughtful gifts?

Whatever that may be, discovering your (and your partner’s) love language will help to understand how the two of you give and receive affection to each other and improve your relationship even more.

If you or your SO have a knack for writing or telling stories, you might want to consider starting a couples blog. Not only is this a fantastic creative outlet, but working on a shared project and passion is a great way to bond and strengthen your relationship even further.

One of the perks of a couples blog is that both of you can put in different perspectives about a topic you are passionate about, like traveling or food. And did I mention that it can also be a potential source of income?

100. Surprise Your Partner

101. Take A Brewery Tour

You don’t need the sun to enjoy a cold local brew, it’s a fun thing to do on a rainy day too, especially with your partner! Most of them also provide behind-the-scenes tours, so you can spend an afternoon learning all about how they make beer while enjoying a pint or two of beer.

102. Say “I Love You”

Aside from expressing our love to our partner through actions, like say, holding their hand or giving them a million kisses, saying I love you to them reinforces those feelings and actions. If you want to get creative, you can even say I love you in a different language!

Say I Love You

103. Find a New Hobby to Do Together

If you don’t know where to start in choosing one, then head over to our Hobbies Bucket List: 100+ Most Popular Types to Try .

104. Take Cooking Class

Much like cooking dinner together at home, taking a cooking class is a great bonding thing to do for couples, with a delicious reward waiting for you at its end. Pick a theme together for what type of food and cuisine you want to try, book your space in advance, and get ready for an evening of giggles.

105. Try New Food

A super easy way to add some spice into your relationship – quite possibly literally so – is by discovering a new restaurant or cuisine together. You may even want to make a thing out of finding a new place or type of food to eat each time you go out on a dinner date together.

Or if your adventurous eaters check out our Weird Food Bucket List that has plenty of unique things to try!

106. Visit a Different Country

Traveling to a new place within the country is great, but traveling to a different country brings the whole experience up a notch. Plus, getting to experience new things with your sweetheart is a big plus in strengthening your relationship!

107. Visit The Place You Had Your First Kiss

Whether its  decorating the living room or making a garden bed, a DIY home project is a popular couples activity that allows you to work together towards a common goal.

109. Have a Fondue Night

Fondue is a Swiss and French Savoyard dish that features melted cheese over a portable stove. If you want sweet rather than savory, you can go for chocolate fondue that has sweet tidbits of fruits and pastries. Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it?

This is a delicious recipe for fondue that I brought all the way back from Switzerland. And here’s the cutest red fondue pot or for something even easier, an electric one !

110. Share a Milkshake

Sharing a delicious milkshake with your sweetheart is probably something most (if not all) couples have done before.  To spice things up a bit, you can try hunting and sharing the best milkshake you can find in your state. 113. Watch Each Others Favorite Movie

Sure, you and your partner might have different tastes when it comes to movies, but that is what’s great about it: you’ll get to discover something new about each other through your favorite flicks! Whether you’ll love the movie or not, simple gestures and efforts like this are romantic in their own way.

117. Head to a Museum

Going to a museum with your boyfriend, girlfriend or significant other can be a really fun time if you choose the right one. It’s great exploring the wonders of art, history, and culture, but, all museums don’t have to be historical or artsy. You can find some pretty unique ones out there too! For example, I’ve been to a quirky umbrella cover museum on Maine’s Peak Island , and also a 3-D one in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh where we got to take selfies in a dozen different vignettes.

Head to a Museum

118. Meditate together

Meditating together can be a super peaceful and zen date night idea . It’s a chance to escape the chaos of everyday life and find some inner peace together. Namaste, lovebirds!

You can try out new restaurants, visit local tourist spots, indulge in spa treatments, or simply take time to unwind and enjoy leisure activities at home . Try setting up a cozy movie night with tons of snacks and a blanket fort, or have a DIY spa day with face masks and massages. You can even whip up some delicious homemade meals together, trying out new recipes and laughing at kitchen mishaps.

120. Reorganize a Room in Your House

Working together to transform a space allows you to unleash your creativity and showcase your shared vision. Picture this: you both put on your comfiest clothes, crank up the music, and dive headfirst into a decluttering and redesign adventure. It’s a chance to unleash your inner interior designers, brainstorming creative ways to maximize space and make the room feel like a cozy haven.

Reorganize a Room in Your House

121. Write Songs for Each Other

Writing songs for your partner can be a super romantic (and potentially hilarious) way to express your feelings in a totally unique way. Remember when writing your tune, it is all about capturing those inside jokes, sweet moments, and quirks that make your relationship special.

122. Design a Coffee Table Book

Designing a coffee table book filled with photos of your relationship is like creating a special visual love story that you can cherish forever. From that adorable first date selfie to the epic vacation snapshots, you can curate a collection of your favorite moments together.

123. Have a Pottery Night

Making pottery and trying out wheel throwing together as a couple can be an incredibly fun and romantic experience! Imagine channeling your inner Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in that iconic pottery scene from the movie Ghost. You can both get your hands dirty, shaping and molding clay into beautiful works of art. It’s a chance to unleash your creativity, laugh at the inevitable clay mishaps, and create something unique together.

Have a Pottery Night

124. Go Indoor Rock Climbing

If you and your partner are an adventurous duo, indoor rock climbing is an activity you’re bound to love! Scaling towering walls and cheering each other on as you conquer new heights is quite a bonding experience. Whether you’re newbies or seasoned climbers, indoor rock climbing offers a unique blend of excitement and teamwork.

Go Indoor Rock Climbing

125. Have a Deep Conversation About Life

Having a deep conversation about life with your significant other can be incredibly meaningful, and even transformative. It’s like diving into the depths of your souls, sharing your dreams, fears, and philosophies on the universe over a cozy cup of coffee or a late-night walk. You can explore topics like the meaning of life, your passions, what makes you truly happy, and your aspirations for the future. Dive into discussions about personal growth, relationships, and even the challenges you’ve faced.

These conversations create a space for vulnerability, understanding, and connection that goes beyond the surface level.

In reality, a romantic relationship may not always mirror the picture-perfect unions you see in popular movies. However, it possesses the potential to become a thrilling journey, enriched with enjoyable couple activities, intimate date nights, meaningful connections, and fun escapades that strengthen the bond between two individuals.

The key lies in deliberately creating these experiences. These things to do as a couple ideas are sure to elevate your relationship and take your shared adventures to a different level. So, grab hold of this list and see how many items you can check off.

I love those ideas! We've done some already, but they're certainly worth repeating ;)

my potato muncher pookie wookie and i took inspiration from you we even showed our friends! they have decided to do it with us! cant wait to try 54 ;) My hubby and i love everything except the 112 because i cant bake! We do this on a weekly schedule babes, wanna join?

I love these ideas- esp. sing karaoke together!! My boyfriend is a musician so he is always singing- but I think that would be awesome.  Everyone should feel a little silly sometimes!!

Love this Love this Love this! Can I reblog this post PLEASE :) or can you guest blog on this topic on my blog :D

Hi! You can absolutely repost it, just give me & my blog a credit link. Thanks for the kudos!

I need you to post this one on my webpage. You're awesome!!! (I really need my boyfriend to read it, sounds better coming from someone else.)

Thanks! You are more than welcome to post this list on your site as a “guest post”. I would just need a teensy-weensy credit and link to my blog. I think it would be great, let me know.

These are great ideas. Everyone needs to break out of a relationship "rut" every now and then and these would be perfect! I've done 7 of these, if carving our names into wood at a bar (we were allowed) counts for carving our names into a tree!

Wow! Seven is really good! 10 more to go ;)

i love these ideas! if only he have enough time to do all of those romantic stuffs :’)

I'm surprised at how many things we've done already! Great list… *tweets

My husband and I haven’t completed everything on the list…yet!

I love this idea me and my boyfriend do some of them *wink wink* constantly!

You naughty girl you!

Thank you for the nice ideas😍. We now got something nice to spice our marriage just from the ordinary🥂

We have done 9 of them… Getting there. I need to print this teehee

I'm thinking of buying dancing lessons for Xmas for my hubby, because he's Argie and doesn't know how to tango! What a shame!! I'm liking #13! ;-)

I wish I could get my hubby to even contemplate dancing. He says that we have been married long enough, so he doesn’t have to dance anymore! Gotta love him :)

I love these couple lists. It is important to grow and experience new things as a couple. I completed a few of these in my last relationship, hoping to have more experiences such as these in future. I don’t have a choice with Number 18 because I am unable to see and therefore unable to bike any other way.

I have been married almost 17 years and have realized that having new experiences has really kept our relationship strong (& fun). But, there are still so many more things we can do together!

If you’re lucky enough to have a porch (a deck would suffice) this makes an incredible date. My hubby and I (38 years together, 33 married) go out onto the porch in the dark of night, play our favorite songs and slow dance. This is especially fun in the rain.Sure, we’ve been caught by the neighbors once or twice, they’ve never said anything but I bet it makes them wish they had the same experience.

I completely love this idea! It sounds like such a special way to spend a warm summer evening.

Seriously, who has not done all that????????

Fantastic ideas – can’t wait to get started!

The photo for the “Write a love letter” is actually a Chinese letter about a couple deciding to break up because they aren’t fit for each other. Perhaps choose another image :P

Ha! Thanks for the heads up!

You got a long great list of fun activities as a couple. The most important thing is that couple needs to find time to enjoy and have fun. Because it’s a lifelong relationship. Having time together helps build the relationship stronger.

I completely agree that quality time is so important!

Anytime my friend and her fiance try to do anything cute, it always ends in banging. They even did it in my house once?

A big and jolly Merry Christmas all the way from Sweden. I hope you have a blessed day without so many hours online!

Tickets to the Sydney show, now taking place at Hordern Pavilion are ON SALE NOW! Melbourne, upgrading to Festival Hall, and Brisbane, upgrading to Riverstage, will have tickets available on sale from Tuesday April 23rd.

On the surface, TV Girl is a sunny, throwback splash of ‘60s French pop and southern California soul. Yet, under that shiny veneer lays a dark heart, beating with sharp wit and cynical alienation. TV Girl, composed of Brad Petering, Jason Wyman and Wyatt Harmon, was formed in 2010 by Petering as an outlet to blend the love of Spector-esque girl-group pop with an emerging interest in hip-hop. Featuring shimmering vocals and sampled beats, the self- titled debut EP of the same year turned heads online immediately.

TV Girl will limber up for their anticipated Australian shows at Governors Ball and Bonnaroo, and New Zealand before bringing their lush vintage rhythms our way in July 2024. Presale for all shows starts at 9am local, Thursday 18 April,  with tickets available to the general public from 9am local, Friday 19 April. Don’t miss out!

Police in Gwinnett County, Georgia, arrested GloRilla early Tuesday morning and charged her with driving under the influence, according to multiple reports.

Ask Amy: Do I break up with my gorgeous, loving girlfriend because she’s super gullible?

DEAR AMY: I need a gut check.

I’ve been with my girlfriend, “Stella” for three years. We are in our late 20s.

Stella is great. She is gorgeous and loving and very nice. Everyone loves her. I do, too.

The problem I’m having is that she is extremely gullible. She believes whatever conspiracy nonsense has most recently floated through her social media feed. Most of this misinformation has to do with health-related issues and because she follows and comments on it, she is fed more of it.

Her latest bit is that she believes that cellphones cause brain cancer.

She can believe whatever she wants, but now this is starting to interfere with my own life because she is trying to influence me.

I’m tired of this and thinking of breaking up with her, but this seems like a trivial reason to break up with someone who is so great in every other respect.

Can you weigh in?

DEAR BORED: What a person thinks – and how a person thinks – is not a trivial matter. According to you, your girlfriend is also trying to control you.

Do you want to go through life having to defend your own rational choices?

Do you want to possibly have a family with someone whose views about health and wellness are so radically different from your own?

I sincerely doubt it.

Why Your Big Sister Resents You

“Eldest daughter syndrome” assumes that birth order shapes who we are and how we interact. Does it?

An illustration of four nesting dolls in a row in a blue background. In descending height from left to right, the dolls have faces descending in age, with the one on the far right in white diapers with hands clasped at the front. Compared with the other dolls’ faces that look happy, the face of the doll on the far left looks sad. It is adorned with medals and a ribbon that says “1.”

By Catherine Pearson

Catherine Pearson is a younger daughter who still leans on her older sister for guidance all the time.

In a TikTok video that has been watched more than 6 million times, Kati Morton, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Santa Monica, Calif., lists signs that she says can be indicative of “eldest daughter syndrome.”

Among them: an intense feeling of familial responsibility, people-pleasing tendencies and resentment toward your siblings and parents.

On X, a viral post asks : “are u happy or are u the oldest sibling and also a girl”?

Firstborn daughters are having a moment in the spotlight , at least online, with memes and think pieces offering a sense of gratification to responsible, put-upon big sisters everywhere. But even mental health professionals like Ms. Morton — herself the youngest in her family — caution against putting too much stock in the psychology of sibling birth order, and the idea that it shapes personality or long term outcomes.

“People will say, ‘It means everything!’ Other people will say, ‘There’s no proof,’” she said, noting that eldest daughter syndrome (which isn’t an actual mental health diagnosis) may have as much to do with gender norms as it does with birth order. “Everybody’s seeking to understand themselves, and to feel understood. And this is just another page in that book.”

What the research says about birth order

The stereotypes are familiar to many of us: Firstborn children are reliable and high-achieving; middle children are sociable and rebellious (and overlooked); and youngest children are charming and manipulative.

Studies have indeed found ties between a person’s role in the family lineup and various outcomes, including educational attainment and I.Q . (though those scores are not necessarily reliable measures of intelligence ), financial risk tolerance and even participation in dangerous sports . But many studies have focused on a single point in time, cautioned Rodica Damian, a social-personality psychologist at the University of Houston. That means older siblings may have appeared more responsible or even more intelligent simply because they were more mature than their siblings, she said, adding that the sample sizes in most birth order studies have also been relatively small.

In larger analyses, the link between birth order and personality traits appears much weaker. A 2015 study looking at more than 20,000 people in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States found no link between birth order and personality characteristics — though the researchers did find evidence that older children have a slight advantage in I.Q. (So, eldest daughters, take your bragging rights where you can get them.)

Dr. Damian worked on a different large-scale study, also published in 2015 , that included more than 370,000 high schoolers in the United States. It found slight differences in personality and intelligence, but the differences were so small, she said, that they were essentially meaningless. Dr. Damian did allow that cultural practices such as property or business inheritance (which may go to the first born) might affect how birth order influences family dynamics and sibling roles.

Still, there is no convincing some siblings who insist their birth order has predestined their role in the family.

After her study published, Dr. Damian appeared on a call-in radio show. The lines flooded with listeners who were delighted to tell her how skewed her findings were.

“Somebody would say: ‘You’re wrong! I’m a firstborn and I’m more conscientious than my siblings!’ And then someone else would call in and say, ‘You’re wrong, I’m a later-born and I’m more conscientious than my siblings!” she said.

What personal experience says

Sara Stanizai, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Long Beach, Calif., runs a virtual group with weekly meet-ups, where participants reflect on how they believe their birth order has affected them and how it may be continuing to shape their romantic lives, friendships and careers.

The program was inspired by Ms. Stanizai’s experience as an eldest daughter in an Afghan-American family, where she felt “parentified” and “overly responsible” for her siblings — in part because she was older, and in part because she was a girl .

While Ms. Stanizai acknowledged that the research around birth order is mixed, she finds it useful for many of her clients to reflect on their birth order and how they believe it shaped their family life — particularly if they felt hemmed in or saddled by certain expectations.

Her therapy groups spend time reflecting on questions like: How does my family see me? How do I see myself? Can we talk about any discrepancies in our viewpoints, and how they shape family dynamics? For instance, an older sibling might point out that he or she is often the one to plan family vacations. A younger sibling might point out that he or she often feels pressured into going along with whatever the rest of the group wants.

Whether or not there is evidence that birth order determines personality traits is almost beside the point, experts acknowledged.

“I think people are just looking for meaning and self-understanding,” Ms. Stanizai said. “Horoscopes, birth order, attachment styles” are just a few examples, she said. “People are just looking for a set of code words and ways of describing their experiences.”

Henry cavill confirms girlfriend is pregnant, expecting first child together, henry cavill yep, my gf is pregnant ... your eyes aren't deceiving you.

Henry Cavill and his girlfriend had everyone thinking she had a bun in the oven after stepping out in front of cameras this weekend ... which he's now confirmed as true.

The actor and SO (and soon-to-be baby mama) Natalie Viscuso were photographed in NYC Sunday ... where Nat's belly was noticeably protruding, seemingly showing off a baby bump. Of course, nobody wanted to be rude and presume that to be the case ... at least at first.

On Monday -- during the premiere of HC's new movie -- Access Hollywood finally just asked him about it straight up ... but did so in a somewhat sneaky way, stating it more so as fact.

Check it out ... the reporter asks him if he's ready for fatherhood, and Henry says yeah ... he's excited to bring a kid into the world, which then spurs the official congratulations.

This would be Henry and Natalie's first kid together ... and his first child period. He's been dating NV publicly since at least 2021 -- and they've been going strong ever since.

Natalie is in showbiz too ... albeit, on the production side of things. She's an exec at Vertigo Entertainment ... and is responsible for producing films like "The LEGO Movie" and "Five Nights at Freddy's" ... and lots of others.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

Henry, of course, is a bona fide movie star ... and one of the famous "Superman" actors of our time. Now, he's gonna be a dad ... and they're in for one real good-looking baby!

Look, up in the sky ... it's a bird, it's a plane ... it's fatherhood!

51 Sweet Things to Do For Your Girlfriend

Last Updated: April 20, 2024 Fact Checked

This article was co-authored by Courtney Quinlan and by wikiHow staff writer, Sophie Burkholder, BA . Courtney Quinlan is a Matchmaker and Dating Coach and the Owner of Midwest Matchmaking. With over 15 years of experience, she specializes in finding individuals a compatible partner, providing guidance throughout the dating process, and crafting events for singles in the Midwest. Courtney holds a BS in Broadcast Journalism from The University of Nebraska at Omaha. There are 8 references cited in this article, which can be found at the bottom of the page. You want your girlfriend to always know how much you love and care about her, but how do you keep showing her in new and exciting ways? We talked to professional matchmakers Alysha Jeney and Courtney Quinlan to get expert insight on cute things you can do for your girlfriend. With their recommendations in mind, we’ve compiled this list of romantic ideas for her, and you’re sure to find something that your gf will love.

Paste cute messages on her mirror.

Give your sweetheart a sweet note to read while brushing her teeth.

  • Write something personal, or stick with a classic like “You look beautiful today” or “I’ve only got eyes for you!”

Sneak a handwritten note in her lunch.

If your gf packs her own lunch everyday, this is a great midday surprise.

  • “Hope your day is as ‘soup’erb as you!”
  • “Have I told you ‘reese’ntly that I love you?”
  • “You are ‘berry’ special to me.”

Give her a cute nickname.

Make your girlfriend feel extra special with a sweet pet name.

  • Try a more personalized nickname using her name or a special quality she has, like “Lottie” if her name is Charlotte or “Sunshine” if she has a sunny disposition.

Cook her a meal.

You don’t need to do anything fancy to make your gal feel special.

  • Everything’s better as a surprise, which is why relationship therapist Alysha Jeney recommends secretly planning your romantic meal while your partner is out of the house.
  • Jeney details how you can “buy the ingredients and prepare [the recipe] at home with a bottle of wine, some music, and make a night of it together.”

Bring her breakfast in bed.

Your girlfriend will be pleasantly surprised to wake up to a yummy meal.

  • Pair your breakfast with a glass of juice and a cup of coffee or tea.
  • For an extra dose of sweetness, set her up with her favorite TV show on a laptop or bring her a book to peruse while she enjoys her breakfast in bed.

Surprise her at work.

Make your girlfriend’s day by surprising her at the office.

  • Bring her a coffee or lunch from her favorite restaurant as an additional treat.
  • But if you think your girlfriend may be embarrassed by a grand romantic gesture in front of her coworkers, you might want to skip this one.

Be her chauffeur for the day.

Does your girl hate driving, or just need some extra pampering lately?

  • Blast some of her favorite tunes that you can sing or bop along to for the whole ride.
  • This is a simple but meaningful way that you can show your girlfriend you care and spend quality time together.
  • To go the extra mile, buy a chauffeur costume that will really complete the picture.

Help her with chores.

We all have things that we put off or feel we don’t have time for.

  • Women (and people, in general) in joy feeling like their partner can do things for them without being asked.
  • Alysha Jeney, the owner of Modern Love Counseling, reaffirms this want and invites partners to “make dinner without your partner asking, do the laundry without [your] partner asking, so some things that you know would alleviate some of her stress.”

Notice when she changes her appearance.

Your girlfriend may put a lot of pride into her appearance.

Tell her that she’s perfect.

Everyone needs reassurance from time to time.

Compliment her on the little things.

Compliments don’t always have to be grand declarations of love.

  • Try complimenting her nice handwriting, the cute way she sneezes, or how attentively she listens when you’re telling her about your day.

Acknowledge her efforts.

Recognizing your girl’s efforts will make her feel seen and appreciated.

Be supportive of her in public.

Having your girlfriend’s back shows her that you value and respect her.

Encourage her toward her goals.

Your girlfriend may have big goals that she’s working toward.

  • It’s equally important to praise her when she’s struggling and feeling defeated. Remind her that good things take time and that you’re there to support her. [7] X Research source

Serenade her.

If your girlfriend’s musically-minded, she might enjoy a little love song.

Post a sweet picture of you both on social media.

You may not care about social media, but your girlfriend might.

  • Try a caption like, “My favorite love story is ours,” “Every minute I’m with you, I love you more,” or “When I look at you, I’m home.”

Be extra chivalrous.

It’s never a bad time to show your girlfriend a bit of chivalry.

  • These small acts of chivalry will make her feel like you value her and respect her needs and feelings.
  • If you’ve been dating for a while already, it’s easy to get comfortable and forget to treat your girl like the princess she is!

Take her on a fancy date.

Have most of your recent dates involved Netflix and a couch?

  • Up your date night game with a dinner cruise or skip dinner altogether and go out for a fancy dessert!

Recreate your first date.

Revisit the early stages of your romance with a redo of your first date!

  • For example, maybe your first date was at an Italian restaurant.
  • Set up your home to look like the restaurant, complete with printed menus, checkered tablecloths and classical music.
  • You could even ask your close friends to dress up as waiters and provide the complete experience!

Play her favorite music and give her a massage.

A private massage is both romantic and thoughtful.

Pay attention to the things she likes.

Keep your gf’s preferences in mind when planning dates.

  • Quinlan presents examples like, “if her favorite drink is a Cosmo, go to a restaurant and order a Cosmo. If her favorite activity is yoga, do a yoga class with her. If her favorite sports team is the Chiefs, watch the Chiefs game with her.”

Ask her about her love language.

Understanding your girl’s love language shows you care about her happiness.

  • “Be in touch with her love language…and what makes her feel loved, and then act upon that,” advises dating coach Courtney Quinlan.
  • If she values acts of service, Quinlan specifies, you might do something for her like taking her car to get washed when it’s dirty.

Do something out of your routine.

If you’re in a date night rut, do something unexpected!

  • Going ice skating or touring a brewery or winery are just a few of the fun date ideas provided by matchmaker Courtney Quinlan.
  • Quinlan also offers suggestions like going on a dog park date, going to a “couple’s cooking class, some kind of concert or musical,...or maybe a dancing class.”
  • Continuing with her list of cute dates to choose from, Quinlan also recommends going to “an arcade like Dave & Busters, a drive-in movie theater,...a spa day, or a couples massage.”

Organize a get together with her friends.

It can be hard to make time in busy schedules to see friends.

  • You could make a reservation for them at a fun restaurant, set up a sleepover at your house, or host a massive game night! Once you get them all together, the possibilities are endless!

Surprise her with a spa day.

A sweet gesture and a stress reliever all at once!

  • As the founder of Midwest Matchmaking, Courtney Quinlan sees firsthand how a special surprise can help women know that their significant other is thinking about them.
  • ”Especially if she’s having a rough time with something,” says Quinlan, “do old school romantic things like leaving her a love note on her car or treating her to a day at the spa.”

Plan a treasure hunt for her.

Make a fun activity out of a simple gift-giving opportunity.

  • Make your treasure hunt into a romantic journey through your relationship by including important locations or clues that connect to your love story.
  • For example, you could lead her to the places where you had your first date or first kiss.
  • Your treasure hunt can be indoors or outdoors, but either way it’ll be an experience that your girlfriend will never forget!

Plan a romantic staycation or getaway.

A mini-vacation (wherever you are) will give you precious quality time together.

  • Jeney describes how you can “put a mattress in the living room and watch movies…or even camp in your backyard.”

Go stargazing together.

Try this romantic date that only requires a blanket and the night sky.

  • If possible, take your girlfriend somewhere far away from any major urban areas whose lights will make it harder to see the stars.
  • Bring along a portable speaker to play some romantic tunes while you stargaze!

Play tourist with her.

If you can’t go on a real whirlwind trip, explore your own city!

  • You can even go extra on-theme by dressing like tourists , complete with fanny packs and a GoPro camera !

Give her a piggyback ride.

This option doesn’t take much (or any) planning.

Indulge in some public displays of affection.

Appropriate PDA shows your girl how proud you are to be with her.

  • Give her a spontaneous kiss in public, like when you’re walking side-by-side or you first meet up for drinks after work.

Stop her and tuck her hair behind her ears.

This small but cute and intimate gesture will surely make your girl blush.

Call or text her out of the blue.

Reach out to your gf to let her know you’re thinking about her.

  • Patti Novak, professional dating coach and star of A&E’s TV program Confessions of a Matchmaker , recommends a simple text like: “Hey, woke up thinking about you. I hope you're having a great day. Let's touch base over the weekend.”

Leave her affectionate voicemails.

You can still make your girlfriend’s day if she doesn’t pick up a call.

  • “Sorry, wrong number, I meant to call my mom and tell her I'm in love.”
  • “I had a free moment and wanted to spend it with you, so this message will have to do.”
  • “I've been freaking all day with the feeling I forgot something important. Then I realized I forgot to tell you how amazing you are.”

Send her “Good Morning” and “Good Night” texts.

If your girlfriend is usually the one to initiate these texts, it’s your turn!

  • Your girlfriend may feel bad if you never text her first, or if you consistently take a long time to text her back.
  • Avoid playing games with your girlfriend, especially in the early stages of the relationship, warns dating coach Courtney Quinlan.
  • ”Don’t play the, ‘I’m going to text her and then she’ll respond and I’ll wait another two hours to get back to her,’” says Quinlan.
  • Texting your girl only takes a second, and it’ll reassure her of how much of a priority she is to you! If you’re truly too busy to text, just let her know directly.

Take care of her when she’s sick.

Caring for her when she’s sick is selfless and thoughtful.

Send her postcards while you’re away.

Are you in a long distance relationship or often away on trips?

Write her a love letter.

A love letter is a direct way to express love to your girlfriend.

  • As the owner of Modern Love Counseling, Alysha Jeney thinks love letters are one of the best surprises you can give to your girlfriend on her birthday or any other occasion!
  • Jeney remarks that writing “an actual handwritten letter that you leave somewhere around the house” is a cute surprise and an opportunity to “explain…how you feel about her.”

Dominican prosecutors arrest soldier accused of raping a 14-year-old

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Dominican authorities on Friday ordered the arrest of a Dominican soldier accused of raping a 14-year-old Haitian girl while searching for immigrants in the country illegally near the upscale resort town of Punta Cana.

The soldier, identified as Paulino de la Cruz, is one of 15 members of the Dominican Air Force who accompanied immigration inspectors searching for immigrants in an area known as Verón, where migrants mostly from Haiti have settled .

The incident took place while the minor’s mother — who filed the complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office for Victims of Gender, Domestic Violence and Sexual Crimes — was not at home.

Authorities summoned the soldiers who participated in the immigration operation, so that the victim could identify the perpetrator. The victim identified the suspect “in a clear and precise manner,” according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

If found guilty of rape, the soldier could be sentenced to between 10 and 20 years in prison.

The AP is not naming the girl’s mother in order to preserve her privacy.
