Table of Contents

Choose the Right Time to Book

Early booking.

When it comes to securing a cabin upgrade on a Carnival cruise , timing is everything. One of the best strategies is to book your cruise early. By booking months in advance, you increase your chances of snagging a coveted upgrade. Carnival often releases new itineraries and ship deployments well in advance, so keeping an eye on their website or subscribing to their newsletter can give you a head start on booking your dream cruise.

Last-Minute Booking

On the flip side, last-minute bookings can also work in your favor when it comes to cabin upgrades. If a cruise is not fully booked, Carnival may offer enticing deals and discounts to fill up remaining cabins. This presents an opportunity for an upgrade at a lower cost. Keep an eye on the “Deals” section of Carnival’s website or consult with a travel agent to stay informed about any last-minute offers that may come your way.

Join the Loyalty Program

Carnival’s vifp club.

Joining Carnival’s Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) Club is an excellent way to increase your chances of receiving a cabin upgrade. As a member, you’ll earn points for each cruise you take with Carnival, and the more points you accumulate, the better your chances of being recognized as a loyal customer who deserves an upgrade.

Higher Tier Benefits

As you accumulate points with the VIFP Club, you’ll begin to climb the loyalty tiers. The higher your tier level, the more perks and benefits you’ll enjoy, including priority embarkation, complimentary laundry service, and yes, even a higher likelihood of receiving a cabin upgrade. So, be sure to enroll in Carnival’s VIFP Club and start reaping the rewards of your loyalty.

Special Occasions and Celebrations

Honeymoon or anniversary.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion such as a honeymoon or anniversary, don’t be shy about letting Carnival know. They love to make these moments unforgettable for their guests, and often, they may surprise you with a special cabin upgrade or other delightful surprises. When booking your cruise, be sure to mention the occasion to the booking agent or note it in the online reservation form.

Birthday or Graduation

Birthdays and graduations are also occasions worth celebrating in style. Carnival may offer exclusive upgrades or perks to make these occasions even more memorable. Again, when making your reservation, let them know about your special celebration, and you may just find yourself enjoying a complimentary upgrade or a surprise birthday cake delivered to your cabin.

Be Flexible with Cabin Assignments

Guarantee category.

If you’re open to a little surprise and adventure, consider booking a “guarantee” category cabin. This means you won’t have the ability to choose your specific cabin, but you’ll be guaranteed a room within the category you’ve chosen. By choosing this option, you increase your chances of being assigned a higher-category cabin if there are any available.

Upgrade Offers

Throughout the booking process, Carnival may present you with upgrade offers. These offers sometimes come with a discounted price, allowing you to upgrade from your initial cabin selection to a higher-category cabin for a fraction of the full price. Keep an eye out for these upgrade offers and take advantage of them when they align with your preferences and budget.

Utilize a Travel Agent or Cruise Specialist

Expert knowledge and connections.

Navigating the world of cruise bookings can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to it. That’s where travel agents or cruise specialists can be immensely helpful. These professionals have extensive knowledge of Carnival cruises and often have access to exclusive deals and upgrades. By working with a reputable travel agent or cruise specialist, you can tap into their expertise and connections to increase your chances of a cabin upgrade.

Exclusive Offers

Travel agents and cruise specialists often have access to exclusive offers and promotions that aren’t available to the general public. By booking through them, you may gain access to special perks, such as onboard credits or cabin upgrades. Additionally, they can keep an eye on new promotions and alert you when opportunities for upgrades arise, saving you time and effort in searching for the best deals yourself.

Interact with Carnival’s Social Media

Facebook and twitter.

Carnival regularly utilizes social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to engage with their customers and keep them informed about the latest news and offers. By following Carnival on these platforms, you’ll be among the first to know about any cabin upgrade promotions or giveaways. Social media is also a great way to connect with fellow cruisers, share tips and experiences, and potentially learn about insider opportunities for upgrades.

Participate in Contests

Carnival frequently hosts contests and giveaways on social media platforms, giving you the chance to win incredible prizes, including cabin upgrades. Keep an eye out for these contests and participate whenever possible. You never know when luck may be on your side, and you could find yourself winning a coveted upgrade to a more luxurious cabin.

Build a Positive Relationship with Carnival’s Staff

Be friendly and polite.

A friendly and positive attitude can go a long way when it comes to building a relationship with the staff on your Carnival cruise. From the booking agent to the crew members onboard, treating them with kindness and respect can create a pleasant atmosphere and may increase your chances of receiving a cabin upgrade as a gesture of appreciation.

Communicate Special Requests

When interacting with Carnival’s staff, be sure to communicate any special requests or preferences you may have. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, mention it to the crew members, as they may go the extra mile to enhance your experience. While a cabin upgrade is not guaranteed, building a positive rapport with the staff can certainly make them more inclined to prioritize your satisfaction and consider you for an upgrade if one becomes available.

Be a Repeat Cruiser with Carnival

Demonstrating loyalty.

Carnival values repeat cruisers and rewards their loyalty. By consistently choosing to cruise with Carnival, you’ll demonstrate your dedication to their brand and increase your chances of receiving cabin upgrades in the future. Keep track of your past cruises with Carnival and make sure to mention your loyalty when booking a new cruise. This may earn you special recognition and a higher likelihood of being considered for an upgrade.

Enjoying Perks

As a repeat cruiser, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy various perks and benefits that come with your loyal status. These perks may include priority embarkation, exclusive onboard events, dedicated lounges, and of course, a higher chance of receiving a cabin upgrade. Embrace your status as a Carnival loyalist and let it work in your favor to enhance your next cruise experience .

Consider Upgrading Onboard

Explore upgrade options.

Once onboard your Carnival cruise, keep an eye out for any upgrade opportunities that may arise. Occasionally, Carnival may offer guests the chance to upgrade their cabin by paying an additional fee. These upgrades can range from moving to a higher-category cabin to enjoying additional perks and amenities. Take the time to explore these upgrade options, and if they align with your preferences and budget, seize the opportunity to enhance your cruise experience.

If you’re feeling adventurous and confident, don’t be afraid to negotiate with Carnival’s staff regarding a cabin upgrade. While it’s not guaranteed to work, there have been instances where guests successfully negotiated upgrades by expressing their desires and politely inquiring about any available options. Remember to be respectful and considerate during these conversations, as the staff’s decision ultimately depends on availability and their discretion.

Upgrade for Special Events or Activities

Exclusive dining experiences.

Carnival offers a variety of exclusive dining experiences that can elevate your cruise to a whole new level. From specialty restaurants to chef’s tables and private dinners, these experiences can turn an ordinary meal into a memorable event. Consider upgrading your dining options for a special occasion or simply to treat yourself to luxurious culinary delights that you won’t find in the main dining venues.

Access to VIP Areas

VIP areas, such as exclusive lounges, clubs, and spas, provide a heightened level of luxury and relaxation. By upgrading to gain access to these areas, you’ll enjoy enhanced amenities, privacy, and personalized services. Whether you’re seeking tranquility or wishing to indulge in upscale entertainment, these VIP areas can add an extra touch of indulgence to your Carnival cruise.

When it comes to getting a cabin upgrade on a Carnival cruise, there are various strategies you can employ. By choosing the right time to book, joining Carnival’s loyalty program, utilizing a travel agent or cruise specialist, engaging with Carnival’s social media, building a positive relationship with Carnival’s staff, being a loyal repeat cruiser, considering onboard upgrades, and upgrading for special events or activities, you increase your chances of enjoying a more luxurious cabin and an even more unforgettable cruise experience. So, start planning your next Carnival adventure with these tips in mind, and get ready to set sail in style!

How to Get Carnival Cruise Line Room Upgrades

Learn about our Editorial Policy .

Savvy cruise passengers may find that Carnival Cruise Line room upgrades can add extra value and enjoyment to their vacation plans, but counting on an upgrade is never a good strategy for a great getaway. There are different ways to increase the chances of an upgrade, however, and passengers can employ these tricks to aim for the best cabin their cruise fare can buy.

Carnival Cruise Line is the largest cruise line in the world, with more than 20 ships sailing throughout the world on dozens of different itineraries and to hundreds of different cruise destinations. On any single day there are more than 12,000 staterooms available on Carnival cruise ships, and passengers can choose the type of cabin that meets their needs and vacation plans.

About Carnival Cruise Cabins

Carnival ships have five basic types of cruise ship cabins :

  • Interior : These value-priced cabins are the smallest and most basic of any on board but include adequate facilities for budget-minded passengers.
  • Ocean View : With a view of the sea either through a window or portholes, passengers in these cabins won't miss a moment of the great scenery during their cruise.
  • Balcony : A small private balcony offers a restful retreat with these cabins. A small table and chairs are usually provided on the balcony, and the interior cabin furnishings tend to be more luxurious.
  • Suite : These cabins are larger than other categories and feature a separate sitting area and a private balcony.
  • Penthouse Suite : The most luxurious cabins aboard Carnival's ships, these suites are the largest cabins and have a walk-in closet and whirlpool bath that aren't found in other cabin categories.

Depending on the size of the ship and the arrangement of the cabins, additional features may be available such as adjoining rooms, upper and lower bunks, and corner cabins with wraparound balconies. Some cabins also feature obstructed views though the impact on passenger enjoyment is minimal.

Defining Upgrades

When inexperienced passengers define cruise cabin upgrades , they fantasize about paying the cheapest rate for an interior cabin and magically being upgraded to a luxurious suite. While such drastic upgrades are not entirely mythological, it is far more common for Carnival Cruise Line room upgrades to be made within the same category of cabin but moving a passenger to a more desirable deck - higher up, closer to the more stable center of the ship, or nearer to popular areas and amenities. In many cases, the upgrade does not make a difference in terms of the actual cabin space or furnishings, but passengers may enjoy a deck closer to the ship's public areas or better suited to enjoying all the cruise activities that are offered.

Arranging Carnival Cruise Line Room Upgrades

While room upgrades are never guaranteed, there are several tricks prospective passengers can use to increase their chances of being upgraded.

  • Travel Agent Promotions : Passengers who work with experienced cruise travel agents or an established travel agency may be able to take advantage of upgrades offered through those businesses. The agent may offer passengers a lower cruise fare with a "guaranteed" upgrade to a better class of cabin than if they made their cruise reservations through a non-participating agency. These offers are not upgrades in the traditional sense, but they are a good value for passengers interested in nicer accommodations.
  • Past Guest Promotions : Passengers who have sailed frequently with Carnival may find themselves in a better position for upgrades through exclusive past guest offers and discounts. Like agent deals, these "upgrades" come about by offering a select number of discounts to qualified passengers, effectively giving them a better class of cabin at a lower price.
  • Guarantee Cabins : Passengers who book a guarantee cabin are not assigned a cabin number when they make their reservation. Instead, they are flexible with their Carnival cruise cabin assignments and position themselves well for an upgrade. Guarantee cabins are usually the lowest price, but passengers can be assigned cabins that cost more without incurring extra charges for the added luxury. Instead, what a guarantee cabin stipulates is that the lowest cabin in that category is the minimum assignment a passenger will receive, and in many cases their assignments are much better. Choosing to sail during off-peak months or on less popular ships also increases the odds of a substantial upgrade.
  • Asking for an Upgrade : Once passengers board a Carnival ship, they can check at the purser's desk (generally near where embarkation occurs) to see if there are any available empty cabins. While these are rare, if they are available interested passengers may be able to upgrade their cabin assignment immediately, though extra fees may be applied.
  • Unexpected Price Changes : If the price of the cruise is lowered after passengers have made their cruise reservations, they may be eligible for an upgrade. Other options may include on board ship credit or a refund of the price difference, but requesting an upgrade instead can lead to even greater savings.

Upgrade Warnings

Carnival cruise cabin upgrades are not a sure thing, and passengers who are anxious about getting a specific cabin assignment should not bet on being upgraded to the cabin of their dreams. Furthermore, groups that want cabins in the same area should avoid guarantee assignments that may separate cabins by several decks. Once those assignments are made, it can be very difficult to change them.

Carnival Cruise Line room upgrades are never a sure thing, but they do happen. Passengers who understand how upgrades are made and what they can do to influence them stand the best chances of securing a lower cruise price on a better cabin, upgrading not only their stateroom but their entire cruise experience.

The Ultimate Guide to Bidding for Upgrades on Your Cruise

Everyone likes the idea of getting a good deal on an upgraded cabin, and a lot of cruise lines now offer this opportunity through a bidding process.  There are a lot of mysteries about how this works and what the secret to winning an upgrade bid is, so we’re going to help clear this up.  We’ll explain the bidding process, share some reasons cruise lines like this system (and they’re not all the reasons you’ll expect), and tell you what to do and what not to do in order to maximize your chances of winning an upgrade on your next cruise.

the ultimate guide on bidding for cruise upgrades

Bidding for Cabin Upgrades: The Background

Not long ago the way to get an upgrade was to either call your travel agent or cruise line and ask for the price, or hope for some magical upgrade surprise.  This wasn’t ideal for cruise lines, because it meant that there was a chance they were leaving money on the table when people didn’t know to ask about upgrades.

A few years ago, however, most cruise lines switched to a bidding system.  In fact, most of them use the same system - a product called Premium Upgrade from a company called Plusgrade.  They provide the website (branded to look like the cruise line) and logic that ties into the cruise lines and helps drive this.  In fact, if you’ve ever bid for an upgrade on a flight, train ticket, or hotel room, you’ve probably used Plusgrade’s product before.

plusgrade logo on virgin voyages site

Which Cruise Lines Let Guests Bid for Upgrades?

Most, but not all of the big name cruise lines in North America offer this as an option now.  This includes Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, MSC, Princess, Virgin Voyages , and others.  One big name that’s missing?  Carnival.  Carnival Cruise Line actually has their own process where, weeks or days before a cruise, they email guests with a link to a special upgrade offer for them.  Guests can take it or leave it.

After you’ve booked a cruise, you may see references to upgrade programs on the website, in an email, or in the cruise line’s app.  While many cruise lines have their own names for this, such as Level Upgrade, MoveUp, or Royal Up, it’s all the same idea, and it’s all driven by Plusgrade.

How to Bid for Cabin Upgrades

Some time before your cruise you’ll have the opportunity to go onto a website and see a list of stateroom types that you can bid on.  There’s usually a short description of the room, some photographs, and a slider that lets you adjust your bid.  The minimum bid varies on the sailing, the room type, and what you’ve already paid (or your existing room type). Once you decide how much you’d like to bid, you put in your credit card or other payment information.  Prices are usually per stateroom - not per person (but check the fine print).

__alt__

Sometime before your cruise, maybe weeks, maybe just minutes, the cruise line will pick the winners.  They may not all happen at once, and you can usually go back to the website to check the status.  If your bid says ‘expired’ or something similar, then you didn’t get that upgrade.  If it’s ‘pending’ then there is a chance you could still win.  You can bid on as many types of rooms as are presented - they won’t let you win more than one type.  Also, you’ll only pay if you do win.  Usually, cruise lines email you if you’ve won a bid (some also notify you if you don’t), but many guests find they notice a credit card charge for their win even before they’re otherwise notified.

__alt__

Mistakes When Bidding for Upgrades

Paying more than necessary.

Humans are kinda funny (I’ve yet to have AI write an article on CruiseHabit, you can tell by my typos).  We sometimes get so caught up in a process we forget there are better ways.  For example, I’ve seen guests bid more than they could pay for the room outright.  If you’ve paid $2000 for your inside cabin, and now you’re thinking of trying your luck at getting upgraded to a balcony room, think about what it’s worth to you, but make sure you can’t get it for less!  The cruise line or travel agent may have balcony rooms available for purchase.  If the prevailing rate is $2700, then you’ll just pay the $700 - no bidding needed!  Do keep in mind that anytime you adjust your rate, you’re actually adjusting your fare, so other parts of the promotion, such as how much onboard credit you get, may change.  A good travel agent can help you navigate these waters.  Read more about the importance of using a good travel agent.

__alt__

Letting the Excitement of a Bid Get to You

Auctions, even asynchronous ones like this, can be exciting.  Anytime something is gamified we can get so excited that we lose sight of the goal.  Don’t forget to stick with what you are comfortable spending.  You may think your bid is a longshot, but if you do get it, that money is being charged to your credit card right away, and there is no going back (you can’t get a refund and go back to your previously booked room). This also means not getting tricked by the gauges showing how likely your bid is to get accepted.  They serve absolutely no function beyond trying to get you to put out more money.

__alt__

Bidding for an Upgrade is Like Getting a Guarantee Room

Cruise lines often let you book a guarantee room, where you pay to get not a specific room, but a type of room - and you don’t get to choose the exact room number or location.  You can learn more about that in this video about cabin types .  One of the downsides of guarantees is also a downside to bidding for upgrades, in that, unless there is only one of the room type you’re bidding on, you could get ANY of those rooms, so if you’re worried about being next to a loud club, or too far forward or aft (which can be hard for those prone to motion discomfort), then bidding for a room may not be for you.

Common Misconceptions about Bidding for Cruise Cabin Upgrades

What’s included with your upgrade.

Generally, if you win a bid for a new room category, it’s just like you booked that room to begin with - you get all the benefits that come along with it.  There can be exceptions.  For example, on Celebrity, booking a suite generally comes with a premium beverage package.  If, however, you booked a standard stateroom and don’t have a drink package, or have only a classic drink package, you’ll not receive the deluxe package if you win an upgrade to a suite.  While this is somewhat of an exception, you should always check to be sure that anything you expect to get, beyond the room itself, is actually included in the price when bidding for an upgrade.

__alt__

Whoever Bids the Most Will Win the Stateroom Upgrade

This seems logical, but there are at least two reasons that it’s wrong (maybe more - we don’t always know all of the factors cruise lines may be considering).  First, if I paid $1000 for an inside room, and you paid $3000 for a balcony, it’s generally the case that these differences are taken into account when bidding.  If I bid $500 for a suite, but you, having paid three time what I did for the cruise fare, bid $400 for the same suite, you’re probably at an advantage - which makes sense, as you’d potentially get that suite for $3400, instead of my winning it for $1500.

__alt__

Another reason the highest bidder doesn’t always win is because no one has to win.  In fact, this comes up as a question frequently, when guests see that a sailing is sold out, or is out of a certain type of room, but then they’re able to bid for upgrades on that cruise, or for that sold out type of room on the cruise.  Is this a mistake?  Not at all!  Things happen, people cancel cruises at the last minute sometimes, and when that happens, the cruise line will want to put someone in that room, and they want that someone to pay for it, so they’ll take someone who bid the most (or who is willing to pay the highest net cost between their fare and their bid).  I’ve twice won bids for upgrades where just days before, the room type I bid on was completely sold out - and this is a common situation.  It also relates to why cruise lines love this bidding system…

How Cruise Lines Win When People Bid for Upgrades

Cruise lines are businesses, so of course, they’re happy to have guests offer money for nice rooms, where they then get to pick if they accept that money.  That, however, is just one step in the process for the cruise line.  Let’s say, for the sake of simplicity, that there is one guest in an inside room who bid for an ocean view, one in an ocean view who bid for a verandah, and one in a verandah who bid for a suite.  Should a suite become available, the verandah guest moves up, and now, a verandah is available.  That means they can then award the ocean view guest their bid to a verandah, and award the inside room guest their upgrade to the ocean view.  That’s pretty great for the cruise line - but it goes even further.

In the scenario above, there is now an empty inside room - and if you’re a cruise line trying to fill a ship with only a couple weeks or even days to go, you want a good lead price.  A lead price is the lowest price you can advertise for a cruise and that the cruise line is willing to accept at the time an ad runs. “Cruise the Caribbean for just $399!”  That’s a lead price.  If they can move guests up (while charging them money for it), and end up with a lower lead price (since the inside rooms would generally be the most affordable), that helps fill those final spaces on the ship.

Tips for Winning a Bid for Your Cruise

Let me start by telling you that none of these tips guarantee you’ll get upgraded - because as I mentioned previously, above all else, there has to be a room to be awarded.  If there is space, however, these tips may help you, as they’ve helped me.

Cruise lines can decide to award a bid at any time.  While often, they wait until the last minute, this isn’t always the case.  You can’t win if you don’t bid, so if the option is worth it to you, don’t delay.  Someone else may be the top bidder today and win a bid, simply because you hadn’t taken the two minutes to offer a bid yet.  So, as soon as you get an email telling you that you can bid, go for it.  In fact, some lines don't even make you wait, and there may be upgrade links available when you log into the website.  In the case of Virgin Voyages , you can go right to their upgrade page .

__alt__

You’re Most Likely to Win Bids for Balcony Rooms

On most modern cruise ships, 70-90% of rooms have verandahs, or balconies.  Because they’re by far the most abundant type of room, they’re also the most likely to free up - either because the cruise line didn’t sell them all as quickly as expected, or because someone cancels.  Think about it this way, if 850 out of 1000 cabins are balconies, and someone cancels, which type of room most likely just freed up?

Bid on Multiple Room Types You Like

This tip is especially true for suites, and relates to our tip above.  Let’s say I’m in a standard room on Scarlet Lady , and I’d like to stay in a suite.  Those Cheeky Corner Suites look cool (seriously, watch this tour! ), so I’m going to bid on one, and I see the option to bid on a “Cheeky Corner Suite - Even Bigger Terrace”.  Well, there are only two of those - so while possible, it’s not likely I’ll get one of them.  Keep looking and you might see you can bid on a “Cheeky Corner Suite- Biggest Terrace”, at the same time.  If those are neat, but just having any suite is really what’d be neat, then bid on a Seriously Suite, too - there are dozens of those, and thus, a better chance one may become available.  Bidding on all three of those types, if you’d be happy with them, greatly increases your chances of success.

__alt__

Don’t Bid a Round Number

This one is purely conjecture on my part, I’ll admit, but it’s easy, and seems logical.  Most of us have a budget, and I’m not saying to pay more than what it’s worth to you - but, well, maybe $5 or $10 more.  If two people bid on a suite, and they both paid $3000 for their current room, and they see the minimum bid for a suite is $750, maybe they’ll both bid that, or maybe they’ll think, “I’ll bid just more than the minimum - $800.”  A lot of people will stop at big round numbers like that.  Me, if I’m comfortable with $800, then I’ll be fine with $805 or $810, in hopes I might beat out someone with a similar budget, even though I’m not spending materially more.

__alt__

The Most Important Tip When Bidding

Remember, you paid a price for your cruise that was worth it to you.  Don’t let the hype of bidding, or the gamification make you lose sight of that.  I hate seeing folks upset they didn’t get an upgrade when, before they knew it was an option, they were perfectly happy with the room they initially booked!

You chose your vacation, and odds are, you’re going to have a pretty great time.  If you don’t win an upgrade bid, you’ll have a pretty great time for even less money than you were willing to part with.

Cool Cruiser

We are about to sail on the Carnival Celebration and after 10 cruises we finally got a call last night offering an upgrade at a great price !  The upgraded fairy has finally visited ! We moved from a HC Interior to a HC Balcony . We never stayed in an interior cabin and decided to try it out this cruise. The HC area is a must for us on any ship that has it . I guess the Interior experiment can wait !  🥰

Congratulations, enjoy!

So Nice!  Enjoy the HC balcony, we loved ours on MG a couple of months ago.  The patio was great and then the balcony off the patio was wonderful.  It was so nice not to look for lounge chairs and be right outside our patio (great for making drinks in our cabin and our own restroom when hanging outside.

Agreed , we love this area too. Worth the extra cost in my mind , but with the great upgrade offer they made ( 25 % of what the HC balcony normally goes for )  made it a no brainer. We had a choice even between a regular balcony and an extended one but we are not big fans of the front of the ship extended ones !

The Guarantee Gamble: The Odds of an Upgrade When the Cruise Line Picks Your Cabin (Photo: Norwegian Cruise Line)

The Guarantee Gamble: The Odds of an Upgrade When the Cruise Line Picks Your Cabin

carnival cruise cabin upgrades

Travelers who book a cruise cabin guarantee face two big questions: Do you really save enough money to make the suspense worth it? And, what are your chances for an upgrade?

While those who book their cruise in a more traditional manner instantly receive a cabin assignment, folks who book a cruise guarantee cabin are only promised a stateroom somewhere on the ship, in the same category they've chosen. There’s also the possibility of an upgrade. The actual cabin will not be assigned until after booking (often a few weeks or days before departure).

The real risk is giving up the chance to pick your spot -- midship, high deck, low deck, etc. If you don't get that upgrade (and even if you do), you might end up with the oddball cabin no one wants because it's a strange shape, under a noisy deck or a long trek from the elevator.

Guarantees remain a mystery to many cruisers because there is no standard method of dealing with them: Each line has its own unique policy that we'll outline below, including how long you need to wait before you get that cabin assignment. But first, we'll address the most burning questions we hear about booking guarantee cabins.

Will I Save Money?

That depends on which line you choose. In some cases, even if you don't get an upgrade, you can still save a few bucks. Royal Caribbean and Seabourn are among those that sell guarantee cabins at slightly lower fares.

In other cases, there's no real savings: Crystal, Disney and Holland America are among those that permit guarantees, but the cost is the same as booking a cabin in that particular category. You only get a deal if you score that upgrade. Otherwise, you've simply gambled away your right to pick a cabin location.

Will I Get Upgraded?

Savings or no, the lure of the guarantee is the possibility of an upgrade -- and it does happen. If you book a guarantee in a certain category that is full, you might get upgraded to an empty cabin in a higher category.

On the other hand, someone else (perhaps a member of the past-passenger program with higher status) might get upgraded and you might get their cabin in your category. However, a guarantee passenger is more likely to be upgraded than someone of the same status who booked an allocated cabin at the same price.

As there's no way to predict what you'll get, the cardinal rule of booking guarantees becomes: Don't book a guarantee in any given category unless you would be happy with a cabin in that category! No matter what anyone else tells you, the cruise line is not obligated to give you a cabin in a higher category than the level you booked. When booking a guarantee, do exactly what you would do when booking an assigned cabin -- book the least expensive category that you will be happy with. An upgrade is a nice surprise but not something you should count on.

Should I Book a Guarantee?

Ultimately, the decision to go for a guarantee or not depends on your cruise preferences. If the cruise line is offering a guarantee at a lower fare than the least expensive assigned cabin and you really don't care too much about your cabin, go for it. You are, after all, guaranteed to get at least what you paid for, and you just might be lucky and get that great upgrade. And it does happen ... sometimes.

On the other hand, if you won't save any money by booking a guarantee, you'd probably do just as well by looking at a deck plan and choosing a specific cabin you know you'll be happy with. If you're very particular about location, then a guarantee definitely isn't for you. Only go for this type of guarantee if you're a risk-taker who thrives on the suspense.

For a closer look at guarantees, we asked each major cruise line to detail their own policy on guarantee cabins.

How It Works:   Azamara offers guarantee cabins if all assigned suites and staterooms are sold out in a particular category. You are guaranteed the category you have paid for and, occasionally, might get put into a higher category.

When You'll Know:  Guarantee cabins are typically assigned between two and three weeks before departure, although some are assigned the week of sailing.

Balcony Stateroom on Carnival Magic (Photo: Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Cruise Lines

How It Works:  Passengers can book a specific cabin type (e.g., inside, ocean view, balcony or suite), but Carnival assigns the deck and location of the stateroom at a later time.

When You'll Know:  Carnival begins assigning guaranteed cabins several weeks before departure and, in a very few cases, at the time of check in on the day of sailing.

Celebrity Cruises

How It Works:   Celebrity passengers can choose a category type (inside, outside, etc.) and pay a price lower than the regular fares for that category. They will be berthed in a cabin within the chosen category -- so no chance of a free upgrade. (Upgrades are only available when the line is running a free-upgrade promotion.)

When You'll Know:  Guarantee cabins are typically assigned about one week before departure, although some are assigned the week of sailing.

Balcony Cabin on Costa neoRomantica (Photo: Costa Cruises)

Costa Cruises

How It Works:  On select Costa sailings, guarantee passengers may either be allocated a generic cabin within the type they paid or offered a higher category cabin for the same price.

When You'll Know:  Generally, passengers will learn their cabin number about 20 days prior to sailing, but sometimes the line lets them know just a few days before departure or even on the day of sailing.

Outside Stateroom Cabin on Queen Victoria (Photo: Cunard Line)

Cunard Line

How It Works:  With a Cunard guarantee, you are assured a cabin in the category you booked or better. However, free upgrades are possible only within the room type booked. (For example, if you book an outside cabin guarantee, you might get a better outside cabin but you won't get upgraded to a balcony.)

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments may be made anywhere from 150 to one day before departure.

Disney Cruise Line

How It Works:   Disney Cruise Line offers guarantees in any given category at the normal fare for that category, depending on availability. Passengers are eligible to get upgraded at no additional charge, but upgrades are rare.

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments generally take place within 30 days of departure, but timing can vary.

The Oceanview Cabin on Koningsdam (Photo: Cruise Critic)

Holland America Line

How It Works:   Holland America guarantees are offered in specific cabin categories, depending on availability, at the normal fare for that category. Passengers who book these cabins might snag a free upgrade if they're lucky.

When You'll Know:  Assignments are made between 30 days and one week before sailing.

MSC Cruises

How It Works:   MSC Cruises offers guarantee cabins -- typically only available for double-occupancy cabins -- selectively based on inventory. Passengers who book a guarantee cabin are eligible for a free upgrade if available.

When You'll Know:  The time frame for assignment of guarantees can vary according to the sailing, category and type of guarantee. In general, guarantees are assigned within two to three weeks of sailing and in some instances may not be assigned until embarkation.

Balcony Stateroom on Norwegian Bliss (Photo: Norwegian Cruise Line)

Norwegian Cruise Line

How It Works:   Norwegian 's guarantees are offered for a stateroom in the category the passenger initially paid for, or possibly a higher category at no extra cost. Guarantee cabins are not available for back-to-back reservations.

When You'll Know:  Assignments are made any time after final payment has been received, up to the day of sailing.

Oceania Cruises

How It Works:  Guarantee cabins are offered within specific categories at the prevailing rate, once all available cabins in that category have been assigned.

When You'll Know:   Oceania Cruises' cabin assignments are made within 45 days of sailing.

Balcony Stateroom on Pacific Princess (Photo: Princess Cruises)

Princess Cruises

How It Works:  Depending on availability, Princess Cruises offers guarantees within specific categories as an alternative to an assigned cabin, and you will be assigned a room in that category or better.

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments will be made at any time between booking and day of departure.

Regent Seven Seas

How It Works:  If a cabin category is sold out, RSSC is usually able to offer guarantee cabins for that category. Passengers who book guarantee cabins may get free upgrades if they are available.

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments are usually made from one week up to the day of departure.

Ocean View Stateroom on Harmony of the Seas (Photo: Royal Caribbean International)

Royal Caribbean

How It Works:   Royal Caribbean offers guarantee cabins, based on availability. Prices are typically lower than the rates for assigned cabins within the same category. Free upgrades are not available.

When You'll Know: Cabin assignments are made anywhere from 30 to five days before sailing.

Seabourn Cruise Line

How It Works:   Seabourn occasionally offers guarantee fares as a special promotion on select departures. They are typically offered as a "run of ship" guarantee at a flat fare for ocean view and veranda suite categories (not the larger suite categories).

When You'll Know:  Guarantees can be done at any time up to two weeks before departure.

The Vista Suite on Silver Muse (Photo: Cruise Critic)

Silversea Cruises

How It Works : Silversea Cruises offers guarantees if all assigned suites are sold out in a particular category. This is, like many other lines' guarantee programs, a waitlist for a possible free cabin upgrade. You might get upgraded or you might not, but you will get at least the category you booked.

When You'll Know:  A suite may be assigned at any time before departure.

Windstar Cruises

How It Works:   Windstar offers guarantee cabins if all assigned suites and staterooms are sold out in a particular category. If a room open ups in a higher category than the one you've guaranteed, you could get a complimentary upgrade.

When You'll Know:  Cabin assignments are made on the day of sailing.

5 reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade

Erica Silverstein

Turn down a cruise cabin upgrade? You might think it sounds ridiculous — and you're right. If a cruise offers me a free suite, I'm certainly not going to say no.

The sad truth is free upgrades are rare. The days of surprise upgrades from your cozy inside cabin to a spacious balcony room are mostly over.

Nowadays, cruise lines expect you to pay for your cruise ship cabin upgrades. Free upgrades , when offered, are hardly ever as good as they sound and are typically from one room to another within the same cabin category.

If you're going to pay good money for an upgrade, be positive your new digs are much better than the original room you picked. If they're not, tell the cruise line they do not have a deal. Here are five reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's free cruise newsletter .

You can't pick your cabin location

carnival cruise cabin upgrades

An upgrade is essentially the same as booking a guarantee cabin — a type of room where your cabin category is guaranteed, but your specific room location is not. You agree to let the cruise line pick your cabin in exchange for giving you a discount on that room. You give up the right to control where on the ship your cabin is located.

If you're prone to seasickness and prefer a midship cabin on a lower deck, you might not want an upgrade that could land you at the very front or back of the ship where it's rockier.

If you're sensitive to noise and specifically chose a room far away from the elevators and the noisy Lido Deck, you will want to say no to a cabin upgrade that can't guarantee a quiet locale.

Travel groups that purposefully booked rooms near each other should not accept upgrades that would split them among different decks.

RELATED: 8 cabin locations you should definitely avoid

When that cruise ship cabin upgrade offer arrives, think about how strongly you feel about where your cabin is located. If location is important, you will want to turn down the upgrade offer.

It's too expensive

carnival cruise cabin upgrades

Not all cruise cabin upgrades are free. Typically, the cruise line will offer the upgrade at a discount, meaning you'll pay less for the upgraded room than it would cost to book it outright, but more than what you paid for your original cabin.

No matter how good a deal that seems, if money is tight, don't take the upgrade. Save your vacation budget for tours and shoreside fun or onboard treats like date-night restaurants and fun cocktails.

After all, you'll get a bed and bathroom no matter which cabin you choose, but you won't have as much fun if you have no budget left to spend once you're on board.

Related: 15 ways that cruisers waste money on ships

You booked a specific cabin type

carnival cruise cabin upgrades

Some travelers need specific cabins. Cruisers who use a wheelchair or have mobility difficulties purposefully book accessible cabins with roll-in showers and wider doorways. Families book connecting cabins or designated family-friendly rooms with an extra bathroom or that can sleep five or six. Wellness enthusiasts book spa cabins for their Zen-like decor and thermal suite perks.

If you have booked a specific type of cabin for a reason, do not accept an upgrade offer. Usually, the cruise line cannot guarantee they will upgrade you from one accessible or spa cabin to a nicer one. In addition, upgrade offers apply to a single cabin, not a pair of connecting rooms.

You might not get all the perks

carnival cruise cabin upgrades

Complimentary perks are a popular booking incentive used by several cruise lines. Depending on the type of cabin you book, you're rewarded with onboard credit or your choice of several freebies, such as an included drink package or shore excursion credit.

When you accept an upgrade offer, you won't receive the booking perks associated with the higher-category room (though you will receive any room-based perks, like concierge access or priority debarkation). Worse, you could actually lose the perks you already have.

RELATED: The 5 most desirable cabin locations on any cruise ship

How? If you booked a cruise and then notice that prices have fallen, you can give yourself an upgrade by rebooking a nicer cabin at a lower price. In doing so, you will often lose your previous booking perks and be eligible only for the current promotion.

For example, if you booked a promotion offering free Wi-Fi and a $100 onboard credit, but the current offer focuses on low prices and a $50 onboard credit, you might lose the internet package and half the onboard credit when you rebook to upgrade your cabin.

Decide whether the trade-off between a nicer cabin and your existing booking perks is worth it. If not, don't go for the cabin upgrade.

The upgrade isn't good enough

carnival cruise cabin upgrades

You should only say yes to a cruise cabin upgrade if it will get you a nicer cabin. However, what a cruise line deems a better cabin might not actually be worth more money in your eyes.

For example, cruise lines break down all the cabins within the same category (for example, all outside cabins) into subcategories, based on location, layout, size and perks. A midship inside cabin on an upper deck might be deemed more desirable and priced higher than an inside cabin on a lower deck at the back of the ship.

A cruise line might offer you a same-category upgrade, moving from one balcony cabin to a "better" balcony cabin, rather than to a mini-suite. If you don't care about cabin location, don't take the cabin upgrade. You'll end up paying more for a room that's essentially the same as the one you booked for less.

If the upgrade is free, or if the new cabin comes with extras you will use (such as concierge access or spa perks), consider saying yes. However, if the cost of the upgrade is not worth whatever benefits the new room has, politely decline the cruise cabin upgrade.

Bottom line

In many cases, a cruise ship cabin upgrade will get you a better cabin — roomier accommodations, a better ship location, and maybe extra perks. However, not all upgrade offers are desirable, especially if what you value in a cabin type and location is not what the cruise line will give you. Don't hesitate to say no to an upgrade if the offer does not represent good value for your money.

Things To Do

The revamped Carnival Glory went through a 21-day refurbishment ahead of its arrival to Port Canaveral. (Courtesy/Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Cruise Line has revamped its Carnival Glory cruise ship with new features before it heads to its new home at Port Canaveral.

The 110,000-gross-ton ship is taking on three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from the port, joining three other Carnival ships. Built in 2003, the ship has a 2,980-guest passenger capacity based on double occupancy.

It recently came out of a 21-day dry dock at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, receiving some enhancements found on other Carnival ships.

Carnival Glory was given a version of the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge during its 2024 dry dock. (Courtesy/Carnival Cruise Line)

Changes include a new casino layout, including a nonsmoking area, and a Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge that pays deference to military veterans and active-duty service members, taking over the SkyBox Sports Bar. Also added were a Dreams Photography Studio and upgrades within the spa.

When it debuted more than 20 years ago, Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was named its godmother. Its space-themed pedigree extends to enhancements added to the youth area Camp Ocean, which now has a large video wall for its Space Cruisers program. Its curriculum was developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Also updated is the video arcade and redubbed The Warehouse.

The refurb also removed the aft-pool Sky Dome, while the ship received routine hotel maintenance, cosmetic enhancements, ADA compliant updates in public areas and select staterooms including the addition of Ambulatory Accessible staterooms.

Stateroom balconies were also redone with new windows and doors and every stateroom had new LED lighting and bathroom nightlights added.

The ship sailed out of Barcelona on Thursday for a 14-night transatlantic voyage to Port Canaveral.

Its first sailing from Florida will be May 2. It joins Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Carnival’s Mardi Gras calling the Orlando-area port home.

Leaving is Carnival Liberty, which is moving to New Orleans.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said Carnival Glory received an updated hull paint scheme during the 2024 dry dock. It had its hull paint scheme updated in 2021.

Overview of Carnival Cruise Upgrades

When it comes to enhancing your cruise experience, Carnival Cruise offers various upgrade options to make your vacation even more enjoyable. Upgrades allow you to indulge in additional amenities, perks, and privileges that may not be included in your original reservation.

Carnival Cruise upgrades come in different forms, including cabin upgrades, dining upgrades, beverage package upgrades, and even excursion upgrades. These upgrades can help you customize your cruise to suit your preferences and make your time at sea truly unforgettable.

One popular type of upgrade offered by Carnival Cruise is the 2-category upgrade. This upgrade allows passengers to move up two categories in their cabin selection, providing them with a higher level of luxury and comfort. It’s an excellent option for those who want to experience a higher-grade cabin without paying the full price.

Whether you’re seeking a more spacious cabin, a better view, or additional amenities, a 2-category upgrade can help you elevate your cruise experience and create lasting memories.

Upgrades on Carnival Cruise not only offer enhanced accommodations but also provide access to exclusive areas, priority services, and other special perks. These upgrades can turn an already fantastic vacation into an extraordinary one.

It’s important to note that upgrades are subject to availability, so it’s recommended to book your cruise early and check for any available upgrades at the time of booking. Additionally, it’s essential to understand the specific benefits and terms associated with each upgrade before making your decision.

In the following sections, we will dive deeper into the 2-category upgrade offered by Carnival Cruise, exploring its benefits, eligibility criteria, and how to request it. We will also discuss important factors to consider before opting for a 2-category upgrade, helping you make an informed decision that suits your needs and budget.

Understanding the 2-Category Upgrade

The 2-category upgrade offered by Carnival Cruise is an enticing option for passengers looking to elevate their cruise experience without breaking the bank. But what exactly does a 2-category upgrade mean?

Essentially, a 2-category upgrade allows passengers to move up two levels in their cabin selection. For example, if you initially booked a cabin in the Interior category, a 2-category upgrade would promote you to a cabin in the Oceanview category or higher.

This upgrade gives you the opportunity to enjoy a higher-grade cabin with additional amenities, more space, and potentially better views. It’s a fantastic way to enhance your comfort and overall experience onboard the ship.

The exact benefits and upgrade options can vary depending on the specific cruise ship and availability. Some potential upgrades may include moving from an Inside cabin to an Oceanview, from an Oceanview to a Balcony, or from a Balcony to a Suite. These upgrades can provide you with increased room size, better views from your cabin, and access to exclusive amenities and perks.

It’s important to keep in mind that the availability of 2-category upgrades is limited and subject to availability at the time of reservation. It’s always advisable to book your cruise as early as possible to increase your chances of securing the desired upgrade.

Additionally, the cost of a 2-category upgrade will depend on various factors, such as the length of the cruise, the sailing date, and the specific cabin options available. It’s always a good idea to compare prices and weigh the benefits against the additional cost before making your decision.

When considering a 2-category upgrade, it’s also essential to assess your individual preferences and priorities. If having a larger cabin or a better view is a high priority for you, then a 2-category upgrade may be worth the investment. However, if you plan to spend most of your time exploring the ship’s common areas or participating in activities, a cabin upgrade may not be as significant.

Ultimately, the 2-category upgrade is an excellent way to enhance your Carnival Cruise experience and indulge in a higher level of comfort and luxury. It’s an opportunity to pamper yourself and make your vacation even more unforgettable.

In the next section, we will explore the benefits that come with a 2-category upgrade, giving you a clearer picture of what you can expect when you choose this upgrade option on your Carnival Cruise.

Benefits of a 2-Category Upgrade on Carnival Cruise

Opting for a 2-category upgrade on Carnival Cruise comes with several exciting benefits that can greatly enhance your vacation experience. Let’s explore the advantages of choosing this upgrade option:

  • Luxurious Accommodations: One of the main benefits of a 2-category upgrade is the opportunity to enjoy more luxurious accommodations. Moving up two categories can mean upgrading from an interior cabin to an oceanview or from an oceanview to a balcony cabin. These upgraded cabins often offer more space, better views, and a higher level of comfort.
  • Enhanced Amenities: With a 2-category upgrade, you may gain access to a range of enhanced amenities. This can include priority boarding, priority dining reservations, access to exclusive lounges, and even complimentary perks such as spa treatments or specialty dining options.
  • Improved Views: If you enjoy waking up to the sight of the open sea or the stunning ports of call, a 2-category upgrade can provide you with better views. Upgrading to a cabin with a window or a balcony gives you the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking vistas right from the comfort of your room.
  • Extra Space: Upgrading your cabin by two categories often means gaining more square footage. This additional space can make your cruise more comfortable and give you room to relax and unwind after a day of exploring the ship or port destinations.
  • Exclusive Access: Depending on the ship and the specific upgrade option, a 2-category upgrade can grant you access to exclusive areas onboard. This may include private lounges, pools, or even dedicated concierge services, allowing for a more personalized and luxurious experience.
  • Priority Services: Another advantage of a 2-category upgrade is the possibility of receiving priority services. This can include priority tendering in port, priority disembarkation, and even priority access to onboard entertainment and activities.

These benefits combine to create a truly elevated cruise experience, ensuring that you make the most of your time on the ship and create unforgettable memories.

It’s important to note that the specific benefits of a 2-category upgrade can vary depending on the ship, the type of cabin selected, and availability at the time of booking. It’s recommended to carefully review the upgrade options and inquire about the specific amenities and perks associated with the upgrade before making your decision.

Now that we have explored the benefits of a 2-category upgrade, let’s move on to the eligibility criteria for this upgrade option on Carnival Cruise.

Eligibility Criteria for a 2-Category Upgrade

While a 2-category upgrade on Carnival Cruise can be an excellent way to enhance your vacation, it’s important to understand the eligibility criteria for this upgrade option. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Availability: The availability of 2-category upgrades can vary based on the specific sailing date, ship, and cabin options. These upgrades are subject to availability at the time of reservation, so it’s recommended to book your cruise as early as possible to increase your chances of securing an upgrade.
  • Booking Category: To be eligible for a 2-category upgrade, you typically need to have booked a specific category of cabin. The eligibility criteria may vary, but it’s common for passengers to book an Interior or Oceanview cabin to be eligible for an upgrade to a higher category.
  • Upgrade Offers: Carnival Cruise occasionally offers special promotions or upgrade offers that may include the 2-category upgrade. Keep an eye out for these offers when booking your cruise, as they can provide you with a valuable opportunity to upgrade your cabin.
  • Cost and Fare Difference: A 2-category upgrade may incur an additional cost, as you will be upgrading to a higher-priced cabin. The exact fare difference will depend on the specific cruise, sailing date, and cabin options. It’s important to consider the cost of the upgrade and whether the benefits outweigh the additional expense.
  • Loyalty Programs: Carnival Cruise offers loyalty programs, such as the VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) Club, which provides perks and benefits to repeat passengers. Membership in these loyalty programs can increase your chances of being eligible for special upgrade offers or receiving priority in the allocation of available upgrades.

It’s important to note that eligibility for a 2-category upgrade is not guaranteed, as it depends on several factors. However, by booking early, staying informed about any upgrade promotions, and being a member of Carnival Cruise’s loyalty programs, you can increase your chances of being eligible for a 2-category upgrade.

Before making a decision, it’s advisable to speak with a Carnival Cruise representative or your travel agent to clarify the eligibility criteria and any specific requirements related to the 2-category upgrade. They can provide you with the most up-to-date information and help you determine if a 2-category upgrade is the right choice for your cruise.

Now that we understand the eligibility criteria for a 2-category upgrade, let’s move on to the next section, where we will discuss how to request this upgrade on your Carnival Cruise.

How to Request a 2-Category Upgrade on Carnival Cruise

Requesting a 2-category upgrade on Carnival Cruise is a simple process that can potentially elevate your cruise experience. Here are the steps to follow when requesting a 2-category upgrade:

  • Book your cruise: Begin by booking your cruise with Carnival Cruise. During the booking process, select the desired cabin category that you wish to upgrade from.
  • Check for upgrade availability: Once you have booked your cruise, check for upgrade availability. Visit the Carnival Cruise website or contact a Carnival Cruise representative to inquire about any available 2-category upgrades for your sailing date and chosen cabin category. Keep in mind that upgrades are subject to availability and may not be available for all sailings.
  • Consider additional cost: Determine the additional cost associated with the 2-category upgrade. Carnival Cruise will provide you with the fare difference between your booked cabin category and the upgraded category. Assess the benefits and the cost to determine if the upgrade is within your budget.
  • Contact Carnival Cruise or your travel agent: Reach out to Carnival Cruise or your travel agent to request the 2-category upgrade. Provide them with your booking details and express your interest in upgrading your cabin. They will guide you through the process and inform you about the availability and cost of the upgrade.

It’s important to note that the availability of 2-category upgrades is limited, and there is no guarantee that an upgrade will be available for your specific cruise. It’s recommended to book your cruise early and inquire about upgrade options as soon as possible to increase your chances of securing a 2-category upgrade.

By following these steps and working closely with Carnival Cruise or your travel agent, you can request a 2-category upgrade and potentially enjoy a higher level of luxury and comfort during your Carnival Cruise.

In the next section, we will discuss important factors to consider before opting for a 2-category upgrade, helping you make an informed decision about whether this upgrade option is right for you.

Factors to Consider before Opting for a 2-Category Upgrade

While a 2-category upgrade on Carnival Cruise can offer a range of benefits and enhance your vacation experience, there are several important factors to consider before making the decision to upgrade:

  • Budget: Assess your budget and determine if the cost of the 2-category upgrade is within your means. Consider the fare difference between your current cabin category and the upgraded category, as well as any additional expenses that may arise from the upgraded amenities and services.
  • Preferences: Reflect on your personal preferences and priorities for your cruise experience. Consider what you value most, whether it’s a larger cabin, better views, or access to exclusive amenities. Assess how much value you would derive from the 2-category upgrade based on your preferences.
  • Cabin Time: Reflect on how much time you plan to spend in your cabin during the cruise. If you intend to spend most of your time exploring the ship, participating in activities, or venturing ashore during port stops, the upgraded cabin may not be as significant. However, if you enjoy spending downtime in your cabin or if you prefer having more space, a 2-category upgrade can greatly enhance your comfort.
  • Cruise Length: Consider the length of your cruise. If you’re embarking on a longer cruise, having an upgraded cabin with additional space and amenities may have a more significant impact on your overall experience and enjoyment.
  • Sailing Date: Keep in mind that the availability and cost of 2-category upgrades can vary based on the sailing date. Peak season, holiday periods, and popular itineraries may have limited availability or higher fares for upgraded cabin categories.
  • Special Occasions: If you’re celebrating a special occasion, such as a milestone birthday or anniversary, a 2-category upgrade can add a touch of luxury and make your celebration even more memorable.
  • Value for Money: Evaluate the benefits and amenities offered by the upgraded cabin category and compare them to the additional cost. Consider if the benefits justify the expense and if the upgrade provides good value for money based on your preferences and expectations.

By carefully considering these factors, you can make an informed decision about whether a 2-category upgrade is the right choice for your Carnival Cruise. It’s important to prioritize what is most important to you and weigh that against the additional cost of the upgrade.

Remember, a 2-category upgrade is an opportunity to enhance your cruise experience and indulge in added luxury, but it may not be necessary or suitable for every passenger. Take the time to reflect on these factors and make the decision that aligns best with your needs, preferences, and budget.

Carnival Cruise Line confirms ban on a popular cabin hack

C ruise cabins are small so cruisers get very innovative when it comes to how they use their space. Some people like to bring hanging shoe bags which can be used to store small items in addition to their shoes.

In many cases, people bring magnetic metal hooks in order to be able to hang some items and keep them off the floor. Others use their suitcase for storage or as a hamper slipping it under the bed.

Every cruiser has their preferred method of maximizing space which can be important when multiple people are staying in a room that has limited storage. Newer ships have generally improved upon this with clever designs that make seemingly every inch of space usable, but there's only so much you can do in a space that's only about 180 square feet — which could have as many as four passengers sharing the room.

It's a challenge that many cruisers take very seriously, but there are also some things you are not allowed to do in a cruise cabin. You can't, for example, hang clothes out to dry on a balcony nor can you drag a mattress out there for a balcony nap.

Both of those seem like obvious no-nos, but you'd be surprised how often someone sees their bathing suit blown away because they were breaking the the no drying rule. Carnival Cruise Line has another hard and fast rule which the company's brand ambassador John Heald felt compelled to address on his Facebook page.

You can't do this on a Carnival cruise ship

Heald responded on his Facebook page to a viral photo of a cruise cabin where someone had rigged a ceiling fan by using pullies and magnets attached to the ceiling. It is not known what cruise line the picture was taken on.

"There were multiple posts about this from various people yesterday and I want to confirm that we do not allow anything like this to be done. Nothing hanging or taped or magnetized or tied to the ceiling is allowed and for obvious safety reasons. Thank you for your understanding everyone," Heald wrote.

There is one situation where Carnival makes a bit of an exception.

"After conversation with the beards I should’ve noted that we do allow those people using CPAP machines to use magnets to attach the wiring across the ceiling down to the power point (plug) by the dresser. But nothing, nothing at all can be hung from the ceiling," he added. "I do apologize for any confusion."

Carnival passengers push back

A number of Heald's followers shared situations where they hang things from the ceiling and have not been told to take them down.

"We hang shower curtains with magnets for privacy (have never had a problem) people put magnetic ceiling fans, carnival staff hangs decorations. So things are hung from the ceiling," Elisabeth Given Wascher posted.

Some people lamented that Carnival, at least on many ships, does not offer an outlet near the bed, while Kenny Walker had his own solution.

"There's no need to hang anything from the ceiling. Just use the extension cord during the night, unplug it and stuff it under the bed during the day. I lay a towel over the cord at night so no one trips over it in the dark going to the bathroom," he wrote.

The challenge for passengers is that rules vary by cruise line so some "hacks" posted on social media may not be allowed on the ship you happen to be sailing on.

"I'm glad you said something. I guess MSC does allow it. Yes so some aren't sure what's allowed because many hints on YouTube and in groups suggest them," Dawn M. Vunk posted.
