How To Get To Nazca

The Chauchilla Cemetery is located in the Nazca desert, a culturally rich town just a few hours south of Lima.

You have few options to get to Nazca:

  • Peru Hop bus

Nazca has a small airport, but it’s mostly used for Nazca Lines tour departures. Few flights available and the overpriced prices make it a complete no-go for travelers

There are many public bus companies operating the Lima to Nazca route. The only problem is the headache you will have trying to compare prices and after you choose one, having to find the companies terminal since there is no central bus terminal.

Peru Hop busses offer a comfortable and safe trip, with free pickups and drop-offs. There are also included stops and tours on the way to Nazca which will make your trip much better! Make sure to check out the bus passes and decide which adventure best suits you!

The Chauchilla Cemetery offers fascinating archeological insight into how the Nazca cared for their dead. Open tombs allow you to see the ancient remains in repose, decked out in their funerary finery. Some of the graves were looted or damaged by grave robbers, but efforts have been made to carefully restore the site.

The Nazca started burying people in the Chauchilla Cemetery starting around 200 AD. In the desert’s arid conditions, the remains have been mummified, and their hair, clothes, and teeth have remained intact. Archeologists believe that the resin in their clothes is another factor that helped the bodies to stop from crumbling away into dust.

  • ruthandvern 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles What you buy through Trip Advisor is not what you get with Lima Tours, the flight was good We ordered the tickets through TripAdvisor, feeling confident it was legit. We scheduled a noon flight on the 4th. On the 3rd we got calls from Samantha and tour guide Brady. They said being able to select a time for the flight was "referential only". That we needed to be ready for pick up at 8:15am on the 4th. As a transplant recipient I have a regime of pills, a wait time and eating and said that was why we had scheduled the noon flight so that would not be disrupted. No bending. I truly think our hotel had six people to go and they just decided to make it a single shot. Weather was beautiful all day, no "high winds" advisory they said "may" take place. So customer service was critically lacking and my confidence in booking another TripAdvisor tour diminished. The flight, exactly 30 minutes from plane loading to touch down left three of the six with bags filling through the flight. The 1st officer and "guide" could not be understood in English and we missed the compass altogether. We enjoyed the steep banking. Mixed bag. The flight was with Aerodiana. CHAUCHILLA PRE-INCA CEMETERY

A PRIVATE TOUR IN NAZCA

  • Location: Nazca, Peru
  • Duration: approx. 3 hours
  • Guide: English-speaking
  • Transport: car or van

Ancient Egypt is not the only place where the dead were mummified in elaborate rituals; it occurred in Perú too. Chauchilla is a 1,500 year old cemetery located near Nazca, and it provides an extraordinary glimpse into how a pre-incan society treated their dead. During this tour, you will see dozens of mummies and skeletons in their original tombs, and learn about the religious beliefs of this civilization that thrived in the middle of a brutal desert. Your driver and tour guide will pick you up at your hotel, or at the airport in Nazca. En route to the cemetery, located 30 kilometers south of Nazca, you will have a chance to appreciate the barren and remote landscapes that characterize the area. Upon arrival, visitors will see small pieces of bone, and broken pottery shards, lying on the ground. This is the result of the graverobbers. Local treasure hunters were able to sell artifacts for several thousand dollars apiece; a small fortune in a poor region of Perú where the minimum wage is less than $300 USD per month. But Peru’s rich history has lost much cultural wealth due to their behavior. In the course of this tour, visitors can view 12 tombs containing more than twenty mummies. Many of the mummies still possess their original hair, teeth and parts of the clothing in which they were buried. Like in ancient Egyptian, the success of the mummification process was partly due to the arid climate, and partly due to human rituals (removing the entrails and spreading an ointment of salt on the bodies.) Travelers will have a professional English-speaking guide at their disposal. This local expert will provide the historical and contextual information to enrich your experience. Are you curious about the skeleton that appears to belong to a child next to his mother? Curious about who was worthy of being mummified and who deserved a normal burial? Your private guide will have the information and expertise to bring this ancient place back to life (sorry for the bad pun!). Do not miss the opportunity to visit this mesmerizing location. It is easy to combine this tour with a PRIVATE TOUR TO CANTALLOC AQUEDUCTS , which are nearby. And of course, many travelers choose to FLY OVER THE NAZCA LINES before taking this tour.
