The Complete Guide to Chembra Peak Trek

The highest peak in Wayanad at an altitude of 6,890 ft above sea level. It is also one of the highest peaks in the western ghats that is above 2,000 m. The peak is visible from the different parts of Wayanad.

It is located 8 km south of Kalpetta and near the town of Meppadi. Trekking to Chembra Peak can be started from Meppadi town itself.

There is a forest office on the way to the starting point where you need to take permission. The Chembra Peak VSS, under the control of South Wayanad Forest Department provides permission as well as a guide.

The trekking to the highest point of Chembra Peak is not allowed now due to the wildlife activity on the trail. However, trekking to the heart-shaped lake, which is 1.5 km below the Chembra Peak is one of the top attractions.

The trek to the heart-shaped lake takes around two and a half hours. The trail starts from the tea plantations, enters thick forest and then passes through overgrown grassland.

From the heart-shaped lake to the Chembra Peak, the trail is straightforward. However, this part of the trek is very steep. You need good stamina to reach the peak.

Second point in the map, you will see “Thirunelli Forest Guest House”

This is the place where you have to take the permission for trekking. You can not go alone. A guide is a must. Night camping inside the forest area not allowed to just one day trek of total 12-13 kms

Third point in the map, you will see “Thirunelli Pakshipathalam Trek”

Well, you will walk along this trek almost half the way and then change the trek to Brahmagiri Midway. Trek to Pakshipathalam is no more allowed.

I stayed in KTDC Tamarind. Reason: Far from crowd, serene and economical.

In case of emergencies, contact Leo Hospital in Kalpetta for medical assistance, Meppadi Police Station for law enforcement matters and the Forest Office for any trek-related issues.

The trek is suitable for fit beginners. Although there are steep sections, the overall trek is moderate in difficulty, making it accessible to those with good stamina and basic fitness levels.

Trekking during the monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to slippery trails. The post-monsoon period offers better trekking conditions.

Heart-shaped lake of Chembra peak trek Wayanad

Standing tall at 2100 m above sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad District. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most charming and instagrammable locations in the whole of Kerala. The heart-shaped lake which dwells on the way to the top is the major highlight of this enthralling trek. And, this is called “Eros” or “Hridaya Thadakam”, and it is believed that this lake has never gone dry by the locals.

Chembra is located in the Meppadi village, which is 8 km to the south of Kalpetta, Wayanad. For all the nature lovers and trek enthusiasts, this place gotta be in your list, as this place is a blend of adventure and nature in equal proportions

Before you start your trek, take permission from Meppadi Forest Office. Usually, it will cost around Rs 750 for a group of 10  members (irrespective of No. of members below 10). Besides this, forest officers will allot a local guide, who will be trekking along with us throughout the trek.

Chembra Peak Trek

Chembra Peak Trek with Adventure Buddha

Initially, you have to hike along a flat muddy road next to aromatic tea plantations for 1.5 km. After this, you should trek for another 2 Kilometers through the dense forest and green meadows to reach the heart-shaped lake. Indeed, the sight of the lake with the backdrop of misty mountains of Nilgris is something that is out of the box.

Chembra summit is just 1.5 Kilometers from the heart-shaped lake, but it is harder than the previous one. Mostly you will be hiking through rugged and uneven surfaces that are steep. But as you are gaining height, the splendid view of the foamy clouds; the valley down below with hues of green; quaint little Wayanad towns; and also offers a panoramic view of Kozhikode & evergreen Nilgiris hills adjoining the Chembra peak is a breath-taking experience altogether.

There are many small shops at the base of the hills which serve snacks and water bottles. Try carrying some snacks with you to stay energetic during the trek, as the trail is a bit tricky.

If time permits and if you are willing to shell out some extra bucks local guides will be happy to take you around the tribal settlement sites near Chembra Hill.

How To Reach Chembra Hill Base

There are plenty of bus services that operate between Bangalore and Wayanad. You have to get down from the bus in Kalpetta (the headquarters of Wayanad). Once you get down in Kalpetta, you rent a hotel or stay to freshen up near the bus stand. After that, you can either take a local bus or hire an auto-rickshaw or jeep from Kalpetta to Meppadi town which is 8 Km away. From Meppadi town, you can hire another jeep till Chembra Hill Base which is 10 Km away.

Chembra Peak Trek Itinerary

About the Trek: The trek to Chembra top navigates through five different peaks before you finally arrive at the last one. The path starts at the watchtower. The trekking course passes along the tea plantations. No sooner than the trek gathers thrust, the uphill ascent commences. The trail moves out of the forest and enters an overgrown grassland area. In 30 minutes, you'll enter a generally flat land. There will be a little puddle to your right side. The trail ascends again from here. In 15 minutes you will reach the heart-shaped lake. The heart-shaped lake is said to have never evaporated. It is one of the highest attractions at this peak. This lake is known as Hridhayathadakam and is the midpoint of the trek. It'll take you around 2 hours from the lake to reach Chembra top.

The peak directly before the lake is the first of the six peaks. The course here is very clear. You should simply move towards a higher top in front of you. If you lose the check, you'll know you're right track if you see another peak approaching ahead. Chembra is the most noteworthy of the 6 pinnacles so you will know when you have reached there.

From the peak, you can view the entire of Wayanad with its blend of tea and coffee estates and forests. On a cloudy day, perceptibility is scarcely 100 meters. However, getting engulfed by mist on the head of a slope is a novel experience in itself. The brilliant green of the tea domains sticks out, significantly more, when you peer at them through an unexpected opening in the mists. You can likewise locate Banasura Dam , Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Nilgiri areas from here. You will get astonished with the enchanting excellence of nature here.

Getting back: The descent is back on a similar path that you took to go up. In case you're trekking during or just after monsoon, the route could be slippery. It'll take 3 to 4 hours to arrive at the watchtower. Camping isn’t permitted at the top because of the danger of stumbling upon a wild animal from the proximal forests. So ensure you return before it gets dark. Rickshaws are easily accessible from the watchtower. The return fare to Meppadi is just Rs.15 per head. You can either decide to stay back in Wayanad to explore Soochipara falls which are also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfall. Or return from Kalpetta to Bangalore . Wayanad has a lot of surreal places that one can delight in. Along with the three-tiered waterfall, there are spots like Kuruvadweep (a river island), Banasura dam, Pookode Lake, Meenmutty waterfalls, and a few other viewpoints which are at a nearby distance.

Thrilling Chembra Peak Trek,Wayanad | Trekking In Kerala

Trek To Chembra Peak

Wayanad, a picturesque district of Kerala in Southern India had eluded us quite for some time in spite of the fact that it was relatively close to our base city, Bangalore. One of the reasons for our desire to visit Wayanad was the Chembra Peak trek.  Wayanad borders the city of Mysore and is easily accessed from both Bangalore and Mysore.

We had made many forays into Kerala and had been smitten by it, however, we had not been to Wayanad and looked forward to exploring the region and doing the famous trek to Chembra Peak, till we planned a road trip to this enchanting region. The Chembra Peak trek in Wayanad, Kerala, India is a thrilling adventure and an opportunity to commune with nature at its best. Check out our trek experience.

Chembra Peak Trek – Wayanad Trekking

Sunset

We always love road trips as they bring us close to the terrain we pass through. But we wanted to avoid the hassles of driving and hence opted for the services of a car rental on which we got a good deal. After a nice ride of about 5 hours, we reached our digs which was a lovely house nestled amidst tea gardens. We spent a few days in this lovely setting, relaxing and watching the sunset, checking out the nearby attractions like the Wayanad Heritage Museum , and Edakkal caves , taking long walks, and finally doing the trek to Chembra Peak.

Getting To The Start of The Chembra Peak  Trek | Trekking In Kerala

The Trek To Chembra Peak

It was a beautiful day, the sun cast the glow of its first rays which was reflected by the tiny drops of dew on the emerald shrubs of tea. After a light and quick breakfast, we set off in our rented vehicle to the start of the trek to Chembra Peak which was about 7 kilometres from where we had put up. The road to the start was not good and had big pits and was rocky. One can hire a shared vehicle that takes you to the start.

Trek to Chembra peak

The landscape was beautiful as we passed beautiful fields and took a winding path that led to a small building that served as a checkpoint as well as an information centre for the trek. There is a fee to be paid here and the fee is for a group of 8 when we went this was about Rs. 1200/-. Even if you are single you have to pay this fee.

Chembra Peak

After that, you have to declare if you are carrying any plastic bottle of water or any other single-use plastic item. These get tagged and will be checked on your return. This is to ensure that you do not dispose of any plastic in the forest. This we thought was a really commendable step to ensure the preservation of the pristine environment and a great step to encourage responsible tourism , sustainable tourism , and eco-tourism .

Trek To Chembra Peak

Having completed all the formalities we asked our driver to wait at this point and proceeded to the start of the trek which was still a couple of kilometres away. The beautiful vistas that surrounded us prompted us to add on a few more kilometres to our trek.

Tea Plantations at Wayanad

We took the winding road with hills towards our left and a valley towards our right. We could see the sloping tea gardens and villages down below as we took in large gulps of the fresh mountain air which carried the fragrance of the herbs grown in the region. We passed a few farm workers spraying the tea gardens and soon reached the spot where a small signboard pointed towards a wooded path and indicated the start of the trek.

Wayanad

The Exhilarating Trek

Trekking in Kerala

The narrow path was covered with trees and the foliage ensured that it sunlight hardly penetrated. It was a steady but gradual climb and quite easy at the start. After some time we emerged at a clearing and could get a nice view of the valley below. We met no one as we kept climbing apart from the guides who manned their positions at frequent intervals to help the trekkers if needed and also point them in the correct direction.

Chembra Peak Trek

After climbing for about 30 minutes we reached a flat land with a small water body with a lone tree by its side which presented a beautiful sight. We looked all around and were overwhelmed by the sheer pristine beauty all around. It was a moment that sent currents of unfathomable bliss through our entire being.

Chembra Peak Trek

Colourful butterflies flitted around and the only sound that we could hear was the humming of a bumblebee that curiously circled around us and the wind that blew in gay abandon over the hills. We, however, had an eerie feeling that we were being watched, but dismissed it and continued with our trek. The climb got a little steeper now with a couple of occasions where we had to hoist ourselves up on a rock or boulder, but the view was getting more and more mesmerizing as we moved forward.

The landscape kept changing constantly too. Soon we were in an area that was a grassland, we walked through a path that was surrounded by tall grass. It was here that we saw elephant poop. Later we learned that elephants prowled in the area. Going back to the feeling of being watched, were we being watched by elephants? We thought, but of course, we would never know the answer as we did not come face to face with an elephant.

The Heart-Shaped Lake in Kerala

Chembra Peak Trek

The trek to Chembra Peak was exhilarating and one of the best moments was when we came across a heart-shaped lake in Wayanad that is shaped like a heart. We were informed that this naturally formed lake at the top of the hill retains this heart shape perennially.

Chembra Peak Trek

The lake with its green placid waters looked ethereal. We spent some time sitting by the lake and gazing at its waters, another moment of sublime bliss surrounded by the magic of nature.

At The Top of Chembra Peak

When we reached the top of Chembra Peak, we got some spectacular views of Wayanad stretching out below. We were tired but a small natural stream of water on the way up seemed to rejuvenate us miraculously as we washed our faces with its cool water. We had not climbed Mt. Everest but the thrill of reaching your goal small or big is always so fulfilling.

Trek in Wayanad

The sun was up by this time and we could feel its heat on our backs, it was time to head back. As always we made fast progress walking down and reached the starting point in good time. We felt elated and all our senses seemed to cry in joy. The trek to Chembra Peak was not only an adventure in the physical sense but in many ways was a spiritual exercise. In the silence of the place, and in the lap of nature we could actually connect with our inner selves and feel in harmony with the universe.

Kindly note, that trekking to the top point of Chembra Peak is not allowed due to prominent wildlife activities. From the lake, you can go towards the west until the end to witness panoramic views of the surroundings from a cliff.

Chembra Peak trek: The Heart Shaped lake in Wayanad

Photo of arvind.sastry

Wayanad was on my bucket list for a long time! So, a couple of my friends and I planed a weekend trip to Wayanad. We took a car early in the morning from Bangalore to beat the traffic and reached Wayanad in the late afternoon. Our stay was booked at the Icon residency in Kalpetta. The plan was walk around Kalpetta that evening and get an early dinner. Kalpetta is a small town and there isn't much to do. However, there are some nice eateries and bakeries in the town. The major tourist destinations are all close to Kalpetta.

Chembra Peak

The next morning, we drove to the trekking start point of the Chembra peak. It is best to start early in the morning when it is not hot. Chembra peak @ 2100 m is the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek costs INR 750 for a group of ten people which one can get at the office where the trek begins. The guards at the entrance check the number of bottles being taken to the top and one must pay INR 50 (refundable) for each bottle carried up the trek.

Very close to the start of the trek

Chembra Peak Heart Lake

The hike is moderately difficult initially but gets easier close to the lake. It is not possible to summit the Chembra peak and there are guards at the top who ensure that people dont trek beyond the lake. It takes about two hours to get to the lake and the views are very rewarding. One should take their hiking shoes along.

Appreciating nature

After exploring the area around the lake for a while, it was time to get back to Kalpetta and eat a big lunch which we were waiting for - at '1980's A Nostalgic Restaurant'. The reviews were great and I was hungry!

After this meal, I slept in the car for hours on the way back to Bangalore. It took us six hours to get back to Bangalore.

Tip: Don't forget to the buy the honey sponge cake from New Form Bakes and Arabian restaurant in Kalpetta.

People in Kerala are very nice and helpful! I really had a great time on the trip. The best part of the trip was the hike and enjoying a litter free environment.

The trek normally starts from 7 am. The whole trek might take about 4 to 7 hrs. Depends how you can able to walk. The permission can be obtained from the Manager, Chembra Peak Estate, Meppadi PO, Wyanaad District, Kerala.

chembra peak trek phone number

U can expect a trek of 1.5-2 hours going up the peak, but it all depends on your fitness and can be quicker or slower. It is recommended to take breaks in between.

Try to start the trek early in the day by 7. You don't need any special permission from the forest department for trekking. You just need to take entry tickets (Rs 750/- for a small group, i don't remember the number exactly). After taking the ticket, a guide will also accomopany you.

The counter is 4-5 kms before the base of the peak (you will be stopped there anyway for taking ticket and only after that you can proceed). Also keep in mind extremely bad roads for 5 kms till the base of the peak.

chembra peak trek phone number

The forest dept. is right at the foot of the hill. The trek will take around 4 5 hrs, again that depends on ur stamina as the climb is pretty steep. Plan accordingly

About Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak is a mountain in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It is located at an elevation of 2100 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak in Wayanad and one of the highest in the Western Ghats. The Chembra Peak trek lasts about 4.5 km until you reach the Chembra Peak lake. The shape of the lake is particularly noteworthy for its resemblance to a heart. According to legend, Goddess Sita bathed in this lake, which has never dried up despite the seasons. It’s a beautiful setting, and the hike up to the peak takes you through lush greenery and water bodies in between.

Chembra Peak Trek

The uphill roadway journey begins along the tea plantations as you approach the Chembra peak trek bend. Hills, tea plantations, and a lush green valley surround the entire area. Furthermore, the trek path then leads you through tea plantations and the forest before arriving at the open space with the Chembra Peak view and heart-shaped lake.

Chembra Peak Trekking Tokens and Tickets

Trekking ticket information.

If you wish to embark on a trek, you must arrive at the Chembra Peak checkpoint by 6.30 am, as only 200 individuals can trek on any given day. Then, you must first register with the personnel, and they will only provide the tokens in groups of 5. If your group is small you can ask fellow trekkers to tag along. Similarly, if the group has extra members, two or more people might join the five-member group for an additional cost. A group of five can trek for 1700 rupees.

And after, you must have the water bottles tagged that you will be carrying on the trek. This is due to the fact that the forest zone is plastic-free, and we should not bring any plastic items that will litter the area. Following that, the staff will issue trek tickets to a group of five people, and we will be able to begin the trek. This entire process will take nearly two hours, which we consider excessive.

Visitor Tickets Information

You can also visit the peak without trekking; the entrance fee for visitors is 30 rupees. Visitors will be permitted up to the second checkpoint, which is 600 m away from the first.

Parking Lot

We can drive another kilometer from the ticket desk to a parking lot, where a spacious parking area for all types of vehicles is available for an additional 50 rupees. Then walk about 300 m to the main checkpoint gate as vehicles are permitted only until the parking lot, from which we can begin our trek.

Tea Plantation View

The Trek to the Summit

Visitor’s viewpoint/trekkers base point.

Initial hike trail view of Chembra Peak

The walking trail is wide until you reach the first checkpoint. A wide hiking trail connects this point to the trek’s base checking point. The entire approach offers views of the tea plantations below as well as the forest and mountains above. Trekkers can continue on after another security check, but visitors cannot.

A small house-like structure with restrooms is present, most likely for shelter. During our visit, there was some bamboo tree construction going on outside the building, which will be snack/tea stalls in the future. There are benches and drinking water available at this time. There will be no more zones further with drinking water, restrooms, or shelter.

Following the base checkpoint, the Chembra peak trek is divided into three stages.

The Passageway through the Woods

To begin, you must travel through the woods on a muddy slope path. Because the climb is not difficult here, you can easily climb in the shade of the trees. There will be no views other than the trees on either side of this zone. Nevertheless, remember that this area will be slick during the rainy season. After you complete this zone, another guard will check your tickets before you continue on. So there will be a total of three guards checking our entry tickets. Then, every 600 m to km, there will be forest guards to keep an eye on the travelers.

The journey continues on a hilly rock with grasslands on either end. The path here is a narrow and rocky one. The scenery along the way is breathtaking, and you can enjoy it while walking. You’ll get some sunlight along this path, and it won’t be windy, so you might get hot as you climb. You can relax on some of the rock outcrops along the way. This way, you will be less tired and able to enjoy the trekking experience more. There are also a few scenic spots to stop and take photos. Along the trip, there are mini-water bodies, and at one point, taps are connected to offer water as refreshments to trekkers.

Top View from the grassland view

After moving along this segment, you will reach a plain area on the mountain. We initially mistook the heart-shaped body of water there for the Chembra peak lake. Later, a nearby guide informed us it was merely a rainwater formation, as the real lake is at the top. To get to the lake, we still had to walk for about 10 minutes on the narrow path. The view of the surrounding area and the nearby mountain is spectacular. The weather will be windy here, but the atmosphere will make the journey worthwhile. You can take some photos here before continuing on to Chembra Peak Lake.

Chembra Peak Lake

Chembra peak lake

To reach the plain on the mountain where Chembra Peak Lake is located, you must climb the narrow hill path once more. There will be another guard here to direct us to the lake. The heart-shaped lake is nestled among the green meadows, with breathtaking valley views. You can walk around the lake to get to the bottom. However, no one is permitted to enter the lake. You can unwind and have some snacks here without littering the place. The view from here is spectacular, and the breeze is an entirely different experience. We are only allowed to walk to the lake’s edge, not all the way to the peak’s summit. According to the guards, elephants would appear along this path in the early morning and at night.

Descending Peak

We started descending the same path after spending some time at the top near Chembra peak lake. When descending, be cautious because the path may be slippery, especially if you are trekking during the rainy season. It will take nearly the same amount of time to climb up and down.

How To Reach Chembra Peak

Travel Tips For Chembra Peak Trek

  • Chembra Peak is open from 7 am to 5 pm. There are two ways to visit Chembra Peak: a visitor or a trekker. If you are going as a visitor, you can visit the peak until 4 pm, but if you want to go on a trek, you must arrive by 6.30 am at the latest, as only 200 people are allowed per day.
  • The hike to the last point, which is the lake, is about 3.5 km one way. The peak is still 1.5 km from the lake, but the guards will not let you go past the lake point because it is a wildlife area.
  • If the weather conditions are favorable, trekking is organized every day. So, consider the weather before embarking on your journey.
  • Trekking is a moderately difficult event here.
  • The peak does not allow overnight camping so at most, you must descend by 2 pm.
  • There will be no shelter along the trek, so bring rain ponchos if visiting during the rainy season. Keep hats and sunglasses on hand in other seasons.
  • Washrooms are available at both the ticket counter and the base trek point.
  • Bring enough water and snacks, such as energy bars or fruits, to replenish your energy as you approach the summit, but don’t overdo it.
  • Read our post on Mullayanagiri Peak for a similar excursion.

Trekking Safety Precautions

  • Ensure you’re in good physical condition before starting the trek.
  • Stick along the marked trail and stay out of restricted or off-limits areas. Deviating from the path can result in an accident or getting lost. Adhere to the directions of the guards and officials stationed along the route.
  • Dress comfortably and wear appropriate hiking shoes. If you don’t prefer shoes, wear slippers with good grips.
  • Consider using trekking poles to provide stability and support while climbing. You can also find sturdy logs to use as support while climbing along the way. During our visit, we noticed slashed logs close to the starting point.
  • Further, if you visit during the wet season, you may encounter a few leeches, so be cautious.

Our Experience

We hiked to Chembra Peak in October. The weather was perfect for our visit. Fortunately, it did not rain the day we went on our hike, as it did the next day. We were extremely lucky to arrive just a few minutes before the token had run out for the day. Even so, we had to wait nearly two hours before we could begin our journey. Then there was the breathtaking hike to the tranquil heart-shaped lake. We spent nearly a half-day at Chembra Peak, and it was definitely worth it.

The forest department protects the area and maintains its pristine nature, making it one of the most exotic treks to the peak if you’re looking for a serene nature hike. This is a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, and photographers. The mist-covered mountain view, which almost feels like you can hold it, is one of the most amazing experiences of the trek.
