very nice kids bike and good components

the wheels are not to good

I bought this bike used for $30.00 at church sale. Needs some work but man the kid loves it, I have a 10 year old boy, kind of on the small side so the bike fits him perfect. He loves the handling and the gears still shift smooth. Need to replace, pedals, chain (rust) and tires- looks to be a 2012 or so. Smooth shifting.

Seems a bit heavy although my son has no trouble handling it.

The major strength of this bike is its lightweight, overall quality build. This bike will last you forever if properly maintained. The paint still shines after years of use. This bike was always easy to shift and operated properly. The ergonomics are perfectly sized for 7-10 years old. The angle of the top tube allows for easy access on/off the bike, this added to the light weight of the bike will give your kid more confidence to tackle the trails. The front suspension and the brakes work as supposed to. This bike is a replica of an adult size mountain bike !

Too many gears to deal with for most kids, Stickers come off the forks and frame after a while ( not the big Trek ones though, so not a big deal ). What you need to know: this mt220 is a great bike, and if you can get a clean used one you’ll enjoy it assuredly, ( or your kid, rather :-) It’s a great performer all around and can be used for racing. One thing is if you compare with the Specialized hotrock of the same ( 24’’) wheel size, the frame on the Trek is a bit smaller. If your kid is tall, you should opt for the hotrock.

I am considering either this Trek MT 220 or a Giant MTX 225 for my 8 year old son. Looking for any good info to compare.

8 years later it's still tough and ride quality is superb.

I'll keep it brief. Today my 8 year old fell in love with this bike. The bike is as old as him. Yes, it's scratched up and shows signs of a beating. But it's whisper quiet and 100% functional. And my boy's words were "wow daddy, this bike is so light!". It cost me $65, a way better value than any shiney Mongoose or Pasific could ever offer. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

the rims are insanely strong and take an incredible amount if force to warp. I have come off of a 4 ft. drop and landed straight on the front tire on a huge rock and it didn't do a thing. The suspension is amazing also.

A great bike with great parts such as the tires, rims, gears, derailer, crank, ect. It will last for as long as you want it.

Easy to adjust, maintain; good for trail and pavement; fast; durable; designed to crash like kids will; parts are standard.

Doesn't magically turn into an adult size bike when the kid grows to 5'10"

I bought a 2006 for my son when he was eight. He rode as much as 30 or 40 mile rides with it on pavement and dirt roads. He crashed it a couple of times and there wasn't much damage. We never even had to get a professional tune up - just a bit of adjusting and wrenching here and there and the odd inner tube. He loved it so much that he was tearfully upset when he outgrew it. Now it has a new 8 year old owner, who is deeply in bikey love with it and who promptly took it and his parents out for a 15 mile ride because he could. The gearing is great for most suburban terrain and low gears crank right up the hills. Light but strong, it takes a beating that kids can give but has some neat features - like the derailleur guard - to keep it intact. Comfortable for moderate distances, too.

nice feel to bike good parts spec

poor suspension fork , and wimpy grips heavy compared to his fisher 20 precaliber,

My son has put a few hundred off road miles on his mt 240 in the last month since he has got it he adapted will to this bike it is more comfortable for him then his fisher precaliber 20. I paid extra for the mt240 overer the 220 for better shifting better fork and better overall parts spec well worth the extra $50

Derailer, grips, chain guards

I bought the MT220's for my 9-year old twins, one boy and one girl. Within the first month both derailers had come off and needed to be replaced. In addition, the handle grips were in need of replacement. Now both bikes have lost their chain guards. We've also had problems with tubes and brakes. By far, the worst Trek we have ever owned, I would not recommend it.

Similar Products Used:

Trek quality. Was probably more bike than my eight year old needed, but I wanted her to have a sweet Trek ride like me. Designed to grow with the child. Put together well and looks great.

For the price paid, I would have like to see quick connects all around. Can't take anything loose without tools. Shifters are a little stiff for my eight year old. Maybe triggers would have been easier for her. Cannot easily get on my carrier in truck.

I feel like Trek has put a good bike out with this one. No harder than my kid rides, this bike is more than she needs. Looks good and rides good. With a couple of upgrades, I will be as happy as my daughter with it.

Dept store bike was my daughter's previous ride.

Trek Bikes Brand Review: A Close Look at the Iconic USA Bike Brand

woman riding a red road bike made by the trek bikes brand

T rek Bikes is one of the most popular and the most respected USA-based bike brands right now, and for a good reason. They offer models in all categories and all price points, for all types of cyclists. Let’s learn more in our in-depth overview!

No matter if you are an absolute beginner who can’t even ride, or you’re a pro cyclist with years of experience in the legs, Trek Bikes has a bike for you.

With more than 40 unique models, it’s both very easy and very challenging to find exactly what you’re looking for. Our in-depth overview teaches you all you need to know about each model series and many other things related to Trek.

Technologies

Trek’s range of models, trek mountain bikes, trek bikes – road, trek hybrid & city bikes, trek gravel & cyclocross bikes, trek adventure & touring bikes, trek tt/triathlon bikes, trek electric bikes, electra bikes, trek women’s bikes, kids’ trek bikes, new or used trek bikes.

History

The first bikes Trek made were touring steel frames , but as the business evolved, so did the selection of models. Soon enough, Trek began producing road racing bikes, and then mountain bikes from both aluminum and carbon.

The first Trek-branded all-aluminum bike left the production lines in 1985 and the first full-carbon model came out in 1989.

Today, Trek offers high-profile road bikes such as Domane, Madone, and Emonda; hardtail and full-suspension models like Marlin , X-Caliber, or Slash; Checkpoint and Boone gravel and CX bikes; and dozens of other popular model names in a wide range of categories.

Over the years, Trek has pioneered or perfected many of the best technological solutions used in the top-level cycling sport.

Thanks to them, many of these advanced technologies have been passed down to mid-range and entry-level classes, improving the cycling experience for beginner and intermediate cyclists as well.

Technologies Trek use

Here are some of the most ground-breaking technologies developed by Trek so far:

  • OCLV Carbon:  Optimum Compaction Low Void carbon frames developed in 1991 — some of the lightest and stiffest in the world.
  • Alpha Aluminum: Trek’s refined aluminum frames that rival carbon frames in terms of strength and overall weight.
  • Active Braking Pivot: A revolutionary patented system developed to keep the rear suspension working while braking.
  • RE:aktiv: Advanced suspension system that provides dynamic flow that automatically adapts its performance to the rider and the type of the terrain.
  • Full Floater: Trek’s rear suspension system that allows for extremely supple and responsive rear suspension action, giving you the impression of bottomless travel.
  • IsoSpeed Suspension: Road bike suspension that decouples the seat tube from the top tube, diminishing the fatiguing impacts of the road.

One of the secrets to Trek Bikes’ long-lasting success is that they make bicycles for EVERYONE. No matter what kind of riding you wish to do or how much you can stretch your budget, you can find a suitable model in Trek’s lineup.

Their beginner bikes such as FX, 820, or Marlin start at around $400; whereas their elite road models such as Domane or Madone cost upward of $12,000.

Below is a full list of ALL Trek model lines available at the moment of writing this article, organized into logical categories.

new or used bike

That means that you can probably easily sell them when you decide to upgrade and get a decent part of your investment back. Of course, assuming the bike is still in good condition.

If you have the money to spare, we recommend going for a new Trek bike that you will be able to sell for a decent chunk of the original price in the future, if you decide to do so.

Whenever possible, new is always better. It’s true that you can buy a bike with better specs for the same amount of money if you look for used, but you should only do it if you have enough experience to determine whether the bike is in good shape.

Trek bikes sizing charts

One of the benefits of buying a Trek bicycle is that you can usually choose from a large number of sizes. Most Trek bikes are usually available in 6 to 7 sizes , but some series come in up to 8 sizes (Domane).

Trek also offers size-specific wheels on many of their MTB models, such as the Marlin series. That means that the smallest frame sizes come with 27.5″ wheels, whereas larger frame sizes are 29ers. This ensures the best possible fit for riders of all heights.

One big plus is that Trek also offers height and inseam-based bike size charts , which is something that many other brands avoid. Therefore, to find the right size, just compare your height and inseam to the chart provided for every single bike.

5 thoughts on “ trek bikes brand review: a close look at the iconic usa bike brand ”.

The Trek Powerfly 5 Review may be an extremely advanced electrical off-roader that comes with spectacular specs to deliver unmatched skillfulness.

It offers the sort of power you’ll have to be compelled to tackle difficult cross-country terrains, however still feels natural on a leisurely weekend cruise round the neighborhood!

I was interested in buying a used xcalibur 7 and it’s a woman’s model. I can’t find any differences in the mens and woman’s besides the seat and coil spring. Is the frame and everything else the same? Thanks

Hi Jack, Good question. Unlike other mountain bikes with the top tube curving down for women’s bikes, there is not much difference except the frame size and the things you mentioned perhaps?

What’s the difference sl series. I’m confused, can you please explain.

Hi Antonio, It’s just an acronym: AL: Aluminium. CF: Carbon Fibre. CF SL: Carbon Fibre Super Light. CF SLX: Carbon Fibre Super Light Extreme etc 😉

Could the Trek Wahoo be the best kid's MTB packed with grown up spec?

The Wisconsin brand has added two new models to their popular children's mountain bikes

Details of the new Trek Wahoo kids MTB

The kid's mountain bike sector has been hotting up with some interesting additions lately. Brands like Prevelo have recently launched high-spec, trail-ready, mini mountain bikes, while YT Industries also expanded its range with the new Jeffsy Primus 27 . Specialized dropped what could well be the most costly children's bike to date with their Levo SL Kids e-MTB coming in at a whopping £3,500.

Trek has now announced the launch of its new and updated lineup of children's mountain bikes named the Wahoo Trail which they say are lightweight hardtails boasting improved off-road performance, and spec not out of place on some of the best budget mountain bikes for adults.

Close up view of the new Trek Wahoo kids MTB

As mentioned, the new models are rigid aluminum hardtails, made lighter with a carbon fork, more tire clearance, hydraulic disc brakes, a MicroShift drivetrain, and internal routing for a dropper post. The bikes come in either 24-inch wheels or 20-inch wheel models. The previous Wahoo models were branded by Trek as hybrid kid's bikes, but these new models are proper off-road machines in a pint-size package, and we had a dig in to see what these bikes have to offer for little rippers cutting loose on the trails...

Details of the new Trek Wahoo oil slick alloy rims

First up are the tires, that are fitted on very cool-looking oil slick alloy rims. Both Trek Wahoo models now come with 2.2-inch Kenda Amrak tires and also have clearance for a maximum of 2.4-inch tires. Braking power comes from Tektro with short-reach hydraulic disc brakes sized for small hands with impressive 160mm rotors front and rear. With bigger tires and disc braking, the weight was increased so Trek has given the Wahoo models a carbon fork to keep the weight down, which also comes with an integrated fender.

The upgrades continue with a MicroShift Advent 9-speed drivetrain and a wider gear range with a kid-friendly trigger shifter. Trek say they have added more aggressive frame shaping, with a dropped top tube and seat tube strut, that they add gives more standover clearance, and builds in space for an internal dropper post . Geometry upgrades come in the form of a much slacker 67-degree head angle, longer chainstays and more BB drop. Reach is around 20mm longer and has a lower stack and a longer wheelbase.

Pricing and availability

The new models in both the Wahoo Trail 20 and Wahoo Trail 24 come in two colors, either Plasma Grey Pearl or Power Surge Green. Weighing in at a claimed 10.7kg, the Trek Wahoo 24 is priced at $700 / £700 / €750. The smaller Trek Wahoo Trail 20 is priced at $680 / £680 / €730 and weighs in at 9.8kg.

Both bikes are officially available now to order online or at local Trek dealers, with more information available at Trekbikes.com .

Trek Bike Serial Number Lookup

vintage trek serial number check trek serial number trek bikes serial number trek mountain bike serial number lookup

Editorial credit: overkit / Shutterstock.com

When investing in a quality bike like Trek, you must register your bike on their website, and if you are buying a used model, you can use the same resource for due diligence to make sure the bike you buy is legit – but where do you find the Trek serial number?

To find the serial number on your Trek bike, you need to turn it upside down and let it rest on the handlebars. The bike’s serial number is marked on the underside of the frame, close to the bottom bracket. You can check the serial number using this link to the Trek website.

Trek USA offers an online service where you can look up your Trek Bike serial number or register a new one so that in the event you want to sell yours, buy another one, or yours is stolen, the bike’s relevant information is a click away- so let’s discover more on how to lookup a Trek Bike serial number.

What Information Is Contained In A Trek Bike Serial Number?

In the old days, serial numbers were used mostly to reveal basic information about a product – mostly how many had been made of a model if there was only one.

As more models were made and released, manufacturers began to use serial numbers to provide information on the model type, year of manufacture, the material used, etc. With bike manufacturers like Trek, it became useful to have serial numbers that provided more details about the bike for themselves and the customers.

Trek serial numbers contain information that includes the year of manufacture, the plant manufacturing code, which determines at which facility the bike was made, the day of the year that the bike was made and what number the bike was in the production run on that day.

What The Trek Bike Serial Numbers Mean?

From the early 90s until current, Trek has used the prefix WTU on their serial numbers, with a three-digit number following that and then a single capital letter. Then five digits for the serial number and a final letter to end.

Let’s look at an example and decode what these numbers mean.

For a Trek serial number WTU295D85467D – the serial number would be broken down as follows:

  • After WTU, 295 is the sequential date number from the beginning of the year-so 295 means this frame was made on the 295 th day of the year.
  • The 85467 would be the bike’s serial number.
  • The letter D at the end stands for the year 2009, while the letter D after the first three numbers would be the plant where the bike was made.

Based on this configuration and data recovered from a Trek recall notice, we can deduce that the Trek serial numbers use a letter at the end to denote the year of manufacture. With the serial number above, the letter D is the year 2009, and the list below would then represent the years prior and post.

So the very first piece of information on your Trek bike you can identify is the year of it’s manufacture, and you can use this table to determine what year your Trek bike was made.

From the information available, the numbers that follow the WTU and the day number of manufacture, the next letter or group of letters are thought to indicate the manufacturing plant where the bike was made.

Trek themselves aren’t very forthcoming about their serial numbers, only what has been described above. They don’t specify whether the serial number code includes the frame size or material type information.

Vintage Trek Bike Serial Number Lookup

Trek has been in business for a long time, and many still have vintage Trek bikes dating back to the 1970s. To establish a database of serial numbers and to decode them, a survey of more than 200 Trek owners revealed how Trek serial numbers were utilised on bikes from around 1976 to before the late 1980s.

Here, the serial number configuration was LNLNLNN, where L= Letter and N=Number, so let’s look at the serial numbers and letters and what they would mean on a vintage Trek bike.

The first letter is the frame model, and the first number is the frame size. So if the serial number begins with A1, the A would represent the Frame model 210, and the one would define a 19.75″ frame.

The letter after that represents the month the frame was serialized, so A would mean January, B would be February, etc.

The second number represents the last digit of the year of serializing and is not a reference to the year model. The final three places of the serial number have letters from A through Z and numbers from 01-99.

The letters are thought to relate to the run’s designation, and the last two letters could relate to the frame number in that run. As an example, if the serial number on your Trek bike were D5F8J57, then that would tell you the following :

  • D- Frame model 510
  • 5 –  25,5″ frame size
  • F – The month of serialization would be June
  • 8 –  1978 is the year of serialization
  • J – Designating the 10 th run
  • 57 – the 57 th frame of the run

You can see the complete serial number survey with all the various models and exceptions here , so you can get some info using this reference to look up your vintage Trek bike serial number.

It seems odd that such a prolific manufacturer of arguably the world’s best bicycles offers no concrete information on the structure of its serial numbers, and while the registration and recovery service is a plus, submitting a Trek serial number on their website will give you a good idea of your bike and it’s history.

Since not every bike owner is interested in decoding their Trek serial numbers and only concerned with registering their bike in case it gets stolen or needs basic information, this could be why Trek hasn’t released detailed information on their serial numbers yet.
