Just outside Los Angeles, Disneyland is California's premier family vacation destination, attracting visitors since the 1950s. Disneyland Park , with rides and experiences in elaborately created theme sets, is what most people picture when they imagine Disneyland. The Disneyland California Adventure Park , created during one of the expansions, holds even more action and adventure, with seven lands based on movie themes.

Relatively new to the scene are several Star Wars-themed rides. They include Star Wars Rise of the Resistance and The Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run. The rides are in the new Star Wars Galaxy Edge area, which is full of shops and restaurants made out to look like the Black Spire Outpost on the planet of Batuu.

Beyond the rides and Disney characters wandering the streets, the resort also offers a full complement of features and services for a complete vacation. Hotels, restaurants, shopping, and all kinds of entertainment options are available at Disneyland Resort.

Anaheim, home to Disneyland Resort, is also worth exploring on a weekend trip. Several outdoor dining and shopping areas extend from the park throughout the city, including the historic downtown core of Anaheim, known as Central City .

The museum was founded by Eli and Edythe Broad, who have been long-time collectors of postwar and contemporary art.

Address: 221 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, California

Berries for sale at the Original Farmers Market

Highlights: Open-air market offering fresh produce and local goods every day of the week

The Los Angeles Farmers Market first started in 1934 as a very modest affair that sprung from the hardships created by the Great Depression. At the height of the economic depression, eighteen farmers came together and set up stalls on a piece of open land near Wilshire Boulevard in order to sell their produce direct to the consumer.

This experiment was so successful that the market continued to expand. At that time, it truly was a fruit and vegetable market, but over the years the market has grown to accommodate more and more vendors. Today, the market hosts vegetable and other food stands, as well as restaurants and specialty shops. You can find everything from jewelry and candles to kitchenware and toys.

If you are looking for things to do at night in Los Angeles, the market hosts a variety of entertainment, including free evening concerts on Friday nights in summer.

Address: 6333 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Highlights: Iconic art museum spread across several buildings and exhibits

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art lays claim to being the largest art museum in the western United States , with almost 130,000 pieces spanning from antiquity through to modern times. Of particular note are the outstanding collections of Asian, Latin American, and Islamic Art.

The huge complex consists of a number of separate buildings that have been acquired and renovated over the years. The most recent expansion, known as the Transformation, saw the opening of several new buildings on the western half of the campus, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop. The LACMA is next to the La Brea Tar Pits on museum row.

Address: 5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, California

Venice Beach

Highlights: Sunny beach with snaking bike path and bohemian shopping corridor

Venice Beach deserves its reputation as a place to see and be seen, making it perfect for people-watching, although the area definitely has its own unique vibe. This stretch of golden sand and the Venice Beach Boardwalk are always thronged with people walking, cycling, rollerblading, and jogging.

Eclectic shops and street performers of all kinds line the walkway. The Skatepark , also just off the beach, is frequented by some of the area's best skateboarders, and nearby are a number of creative art installations. At the appropriately named Muscle Beach , gym members pump iron in the hot California sun.

Food stalls selling everything from shaved ice to kettle corn and funnel cakes make you feel like you're walking through fairgrounds. You can also find some good restaurants here. This is not a typical family beach, but it's well worth a visit.

Beverly Hills

Highlights: Chic Golden Triangle of fashion, several public parks, nearby mansions

Beverly Hills borders Los Angeles to the west, encompassing 5.7 square miles tucked beneath the Santa Monica Mountains. And within this small footprint are some of the poshest streets in America, including the world-famous Rodeo Drive .

Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica Boulevard, and Wilshire Boulevard converge in Beverly Hills to create the city's " Golden Triangle " of upscale retail and dining. This luxe thoroughfare is worth the visit even without shopping, as the glamour spills out onto the sidewalks with celebrity sightings and luxury cars.

And there are a lot more things to do in Beverly Hills besides shopping and dining. The city is very walkable with several gardens, historic buildings, and public art throughout. Spend some time at Beverly Gardens Park for a sample of these first-class public spaces.

Page Museum and La Brea Tar Pits

Highlights: Indoor and outdoor exhibits detailing the incredible natural history of the area

In Hancock Park, La Brea Tar Pits offers a unique opportunity to see live excavations of fossils and learn about the process. The Tar Pits were formed 40,000 years ago, when oil seeped through the rock, entrapping passing animals, which would get stuck in the substance. The tar then preserved the fossils throughout the ages, leaving behind an incredible glimpse into another age.

The museum at la Brea Tar Pits (formerly the George C. Page Museum) shows reconstructed fossils of prehistoric animals found at the site, as well as the process of fossil recovery. You can see bones being worked on and learn what takes place behind the scenes, before skeletons are able to be displayed.

The museum displays fully reconstructed fossils of a variety of mammals including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and others, all dating from between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. An outdoor area displays replicas of extinct animals.

Plans are in the works for a renovation and new design. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is reviewing plans from architecture teams in the hopes of reinventing this unique attraction.

Address: 5801 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles

Battleship Iowa

Highlights: Guided tours of a retired battleship

The Battleship Iowa Museum is an imposing sight on the waterfront close to the Port of Los Angeles and is a great family activity. You can wander throughout this massive battleship and see what life at sea would have been like for the sailors on board.

Included with admission is a self-guided tour showcasing the history of the ship. One of the highlights is a look at the massive 16-inch guns. Kids enjoy a free scavenger hunt, searching the ship to find the 10 secret locations of Vicky, the ship's dog (displayed on posters or in augmented reality).

For those wanting to really get behind the scenes, for an additional fee you can take the Full Steam Ahead Guided Tour , which allows you access to the inner workings of the ship, including the engine room, boiler room, and the Combat Engagement Center, among other restricted areas. Note that dates and numbers are limited for this tour, and it should be booked well in advance.

Address: 250 S Harbor Blvd., Low Angeles, California

A trail in Runyon Canyon Park

Highlights: Beloved hiking area with great views and celebrity sightings

Runyon Canyon Park is a 160-acre park known for its hiking trails and magnificent views of Downtown Los Angeles . Its convenient location near Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills makes it a popular place with celebrities —if you've seen paparazzi photos of celebs hiking in Los Angeles, they were probably taken at Runyon.

Trails run from 1 to just over 3 miles and range from easy to strenuous. For some of the best views, hit the East Trail from the Fuller Avenue entrance. It passes through two beautiful lookouts: Inspiration Point and Cloud's Rest.

Parking can be particularly tricky on the streets near Runyon Canyon Park, so be sure you leave ample time to look for a spot, or consider using a ride-share service.

Lanterns in Little Tokyo

Highlights: Japanese restaurants, historic fire tower, wishing tree, gardens

Los Angeles is home to one of just three remaining Japantowns in the United States: Little Tokyo. The petite neighborhood packs tons of culture, cuisine, and color into about five city blocks.

The Japanese Village Plaza is considered the central gathering place. Lit by red and white paper lanterns, this pedestrian-only plaza feels like it was plucked from Tokyo and dropped into Downtown Los Angeles. Check out the Yagura Tower at the First Street entrance—this replica of a rural Japanese fire tower has been greeting visitors for nearly 50 years.

In addition to popular shops, like Nijiya grocery store and the Sanrio Hello Kitty boutique , another major attraction is the wishing tree . People from around the world jot down their hopes and dreams on colorful paper strips, then hang them from the tree's branches in hopes that they'll come to fruition. Reading the notes is deeply touching.

Come hungry—Little Tokyo has some of the best Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles. Slurp ramen noodles at Hachioji , fill up on okonomiyaki (a Hiroshima speciality!) at Chinchikurin , and satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh mochi from the 120-year-old Fugetsu-Do Bakery Shop .

Author Joni Sweet on Melrose Avenue

Highlights: Vintage shopping, murals, comedy clubs

Melrose Avenue is one of the city's most famous streets due to its large number of vintage shops with funky storefronts. On the two-mile span from La Cienega Boulevard to La Brea Avenue, you can shop at more than 15 vintage stores , some of which have been adding vibrancy to this street for decades.

The west side of Melrose tends to have higher-end shops, like Decades , which is beloved for its dazzling designer gowns from as far back as the 1930s . Head east and you'll get a lot more bang for your buck at mega vintage shops like Wasteland , American Rebel, and American Vintage. Browsing the racks at these stores feels like digging for wearable treasure, and no matter what your style or budget, you'll likely find a unique piece to upgrade your wardrobe.

Once you find something you love, wear it right out of the store for an impromptu photoshoot at one of the many murals on Melrose. The famous pink wall on the Paul Smith flagship store is popular among the influencer crowd.

Comedy clubs are another highlight on Melrose. Get your laughs with stand-up a t Hollywood Improv or sketch comedy at The Groundlings.

Malibu

Highlights: Beautiful oceanfront city with several public beaches and posh places to visit

The Santa Monica Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean in Malibu, on the far western coastline of LA County. This dramatic backdrop sets the scene for many Malibu attractions and things to do , while beachside mansions and the occasional celebrity sighting help set the tone for Malibu culture.

Exploring some of Malibu's best beaches is one of the best ways to enjoy the city. All are within an hour's drive of Los Angeles, depending on traffic, and each offers a different beachscape to enjoy. From the broad shores of Zuma Beach to the wild landscape surrounding El Matador State Beach, the coastline appeals to both relaxing and adventurous outings alike.

Malibu is also home to several seafood restaurants worth the drive alone. The famous Neptune's Net perhaps has the most notoriety, partly thanks to its roles in movies like Point Break and The Fast and the Furious . Other spots with menus worth perusing include Dukes Malibu and Paradise Cove Beach Cafe.

Long Beach

Highlights: Vibrant city with a long beachfront, several city parks, and family attractions

Long Beach is another community in the Los Angeles area that's easy to spend a day exploring. It borders LA to the south, about 20 miles from downtown, and extends along San Pedro Bay. The miles of beach in Long Beach are common motives for a visit, capped off by a tourist-friendly and attraction-filled waterfront downtown district.

Things to do in Long Beach's waterfront district include a visit to the historic Queen Mary ocean liner , due to reopen in late 2022; the Aquarium of the Pacific ; and exploring the unique shops at Shoreline Village . You can also catch the Catalina Express for a trip to Santa Catalina Island .

And it's not just the ocean to explore in Long Beach. Several of the city's best parks also offer inland attractions, like the historic Bixby Park or sprawling El Dorado East Regional Park. El Dorado East is also home to the lovely Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden , filled with tranquil appeal.

On display throughout the Getty Villa are ancient artworks and relics, ranging from marble statues to rare coins and jewelry. Different exhibits are found around every corner on the first and second floors of the museum, and in combination with the landscaped settings, expect to spend at least two to three hours exploring the grounds.

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)

Highlights: Downtown museum with satellite locations and ever-changing art on display

The Museum of Contemporary Art ( MOCA ) consists of two separate facilities and is dedicated to works from the 1940s onwards. Pieces from the permanent collection are on display, and regularly changing exhibits feature new works and emerging media.

The MOCA Grand , on Grand Avenue, is the museum's primary facility, with the main galleries, as well as the largest museum store. The MOCA Geffen is in Little Tokyo, in what was formerly a police car warehouse.

Double Negative is another art location associated with MOCA, located in the desert in Moapa Valley on Mormon Mesa near Overton, in Nevada. This land art by Michael Heizer was acquired by the museum and can be visited free of charge.

  • Families headed to the theme parks with the kids in tow usually base themselves here in a whimsical Disney-themed hotel. Popular options include the Disneyland Hotel and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa , an easy stroll from the Disney theme parks.
  • Sonesta ES Suites Anaheim Resort Area is a more affordable option with convenient apartment-style accommodation.

Downtown Los Angeles Hotels

  • Bristling with new restaurants and art galleries amid the skyscrapers, Downtown LA is finally finding its soul. Sports fans catching a game at the Staples Center, hipsters, foodies, and business travelers often base themselves here and score cheaper hotel rates than at the typical tourist hot spots. Popular quality hotel choices include the luxury Omni Los Angeles at California Plaza near the Walt Disney Concert Hall , and the more modestly priced Doubletree by Hilton .

See the Sights:

  • One of the best ways to see Los Angeles is on a Los Angeles City Sightseeing Hop-on Hop-off Tour , which offers a fun overview of the city with maximum flexibility. Enjoy 360-degree views from the open-air bus and hop on or off at more than 50 locations, including Beverly Hills, Hollywood, downtown LA, and Santa Monica. Choose between a 24- or 48-hour ticket.

Save Money:

  • If you plan on visiting multiple attractions while you're in the City of Angels, the Go City: Los Angeles Explorer Pass is a great way to save money. This versatile card gives you discounts at top Los Angeles attractions. You can choose between two and seven attractions from a list of 30.

Los Angeles notoriously enjoys warm weather throughout the year. However, the best seasons to visit are the "shoulder seasons," including spring (March, April, May) and fall (September, October, and November). The air is easier to breathe this time of year, and the streets are less crowded with tourists.

June, July, and August are still some of the most popular times to visit Lost Angeles. And for good reason. The hot weather beckons for the beach and the late evenings extend a day of exploring. Expect to pay the highest rates for things like lodging and transportation this time of year.

The winter months, including December, January, and February, are suitable months to visit. Expect slightly colder temperatures that keep most people away from the beach. But, with average daytime temperatures still in the 60s Fahrenheit, it's often a welcomed warm escape from other parts of the country.

Los Angeles Tourist Attractions Maps | City Tours Map

The beaches, the food, the shopping options, the scenic view, the endless sunshine, the lingering sunsets, and the glitz and the glamour of La La Land -- you will never run out of reasons to visit Los Angeles. With a record high of 50 million visitors in 2018, this sprawling Southern California city is no doubt one of the top tourist destinations in the United States.

Notorious for its traffic, Los Angeles poses a bit of a challenge for its visitors. However, getting around Los Angeles could turn out surprisingly pleasant with a tad of creativity, wise planning, and a little help from the Los Angeles metro map. Although not as well-praised as other metro networks, the Los Angeles Metro Rail System is still the most convenient and affordable means of exploring the city. To navigate the city at your pace, be sure to get a copy of the Los Angeles Transport Map.

To make the most out of your stay in Los Angeles, plan your itinerary carefully using the Los Angeles Tourist Sightseeing Map. Satisfy your palate in one of the finest restaurants in downtown Los Angeles, watch a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, ride the solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier, or shop at a vintage clothing store in West Hollywood. The map includes detailed instructions on how to get to the city's top attractions.

Los Angeles is a massive city, and exploring its many sights on foot could be a little tricky. It is best to focus on the most walkable parts of the city. Take, for instance, Hollywood. You can stroll along the Walk of Fame and spot the names of your favorite celebrities; check out the eccentric boutiques and landmark bistros at Melrose Avenue; then, catch a show on Sunset Boulevard. To help you decide which neighborhoods to visit, get a copy of the Los Angeles Walking Tour Maps. The map focuses on a variety of options that allows you to pick a tour, depending on your preference.

If you are traveling with elders and kids, we recommend that you book the Hop on Hop off Bus tour for comfort and convenience. To find out more about the bus routes, refer to our free printable Los Angeles Hop on Hop on Bus map.

Get to Know the City of Angels

Our Los Angeles City tour begins in Downtown Los Angeles, where you can see the towering skyscrapers, the famous Dorothy Chandler Pavilion , and the modern architecture of the Walt Disney Concert Hall . We will stop for a few photos at the Concert Hall then continue onto the Griffith Park Observatory . Here you will get a stunning panoramic view of the “City of the Angels” as well as the iconic Hollywood Sign .

We then make our way to Hollywood, the original home of the city’s entertainment industry. No trip to Hollywood would be complete without a stop at Grauman’s Chinese Theater , which is now known as the TCL Chinese Theater. Here you can walk among the cemented handprints and footprints of movie stars, both past and present. We’ll give you time to stroll along Hollywood Boulevard and find the star of your favorite entertainer on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . While you’re here, check out the exterior of the Dolby Theater , home to the Academy Awards (a.k.a. the Oscars).

Walk of Fame Tours

Next, your tour will cruise along the storied Sunset Strip , where you will see bars, restaurants, and nightclubs that the young and hot in Hollywood frequent. The tour continues into the gorgeous neighborhoods of Beverly Hills , and here you can see a selection of movie stars’ homes and a photo stop at the famous Beverly Hills Sign . But the tour doesn’t stop there – you’ll also see where the rich and famous spend their money at the world’s most exclusive boutique shops along Rodeo Drive . Throughout the ride, your guide will point out filming locations from the movie “Pretty Woman” , such as the Beverly Wilshire Hotel .

Our last stop will be for lunch at the dazzling Grove Shopping Mall and charming Original Farmers Market , a must-see destination loved by tourists and locals alike. Your guide can recommend the best places to grab a bite, and then you have a chance to walk around and enjoy the area’s sights.

The tour then returns to the select Hollywood and Downtown LA hotels on a route through one of the city’s unique neighborhoods. If you’re not ready to end your LA adventure, be sure to ask your guide for restaurant recommendations or more places to visit .

Other Important Information

  • In addition to its many iconic sights, the city of Los Angeles is known for its traffic. For this reason, pick-up and drop-off times are approximate .
  • Southern California is known for its sunny weather, so we recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for our short walks around the stops.
  • For safety reasons, our vehicles do not feature an open-top roof . However, you will still be able to capture many wonderful photos from the comfort of our luxurious, air-conditioned vehicles and at our stops.
  • The exact order in which we visit the locations is subject to change due to traffic conditions or other circumstances.

What an amazing tour! Paul was very knowledgeable about the different locations on the tour. We loved that it was a small group and hit all of the highlights in the LA area. Just the right amount of time spent at each sight. Paul was very accommodating and wanted us to appreciate and learn about the history of the city. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Thank you so much Paul and Guideline Tours!

This tour was amazing and our tour guide Bing was the main attraction! We have visited Los Angeles several times but this is the first time we did a tour. Bing is so knowledgeable about the city! She knew the history, the culture and was friendly and professional. I highly recommend this tour company- and ask for Bing😃.

My tour guide Dave did a phenomenal job. We had a small party with just three adults and a child so we got a very personalized experience. We saw the Hollywood sign and walk of fame including Michael Jackson’s star. We took pics at staples center (now crypto.com), visited Beverly Hills, Melrose, griffin observatory,Korea town, happy ice, various celebrity homes and a multitude of other places. I’m only in town for a few days so this tour was the best way for me to see the majority of the city and it’s hot spots. Salute to Dave and his grand city tour of LA.

downtown los angeles walking tour

How to Explore Downtown Los Angeles on a Self-Guided Walking Tour

Last Modified: July 12, 2023 //  by  Anda //   16 Comments

Nobody walks in LA, right? Well, that’s mostly true when you need to get from one place to another, since distances are quite big here. However, there are many walking opportunities in this city and quite a few places worth exploring on foot. So if this your first time in Los Angeles and you want to take a walking tour of the downtown area, here are the best places to visit.

Downtown area, one of the best places to stay in Los Angeles

Table of Contents

Historic Center & Olvera Street

Union station, downtown (bunker hill), bunker hill steps, l.a. public library, angels flight railway, bradbury building, grand central market, broadway historic theater district, getting around downtown los angeles, is downtown los angeles safe for walking, a self guided walking tour of downtown los angeles.

I have to confess that although we lived in Los Angeles area for over 30 years, it took me a while to discover how attractive this city really is. Despite being such a big urban sprawl, Downtown L.A. has all manner of walks. From shopping, to ethnic and architecturally themed choices, you can actually use your feet quite a lot in Los Angeles.

So here is a suggested self-guided walking tour that will take you through the most representative neighborhoods in Downtown Los Angeles.

city tour map los angeles

Begin your walk in the Historic Center, the oldest area in LA. The Historic Center is concentrated around Olvera Street , a colonial-era alley lined with shops, popular restaurants and stalls selling everything from folk art to silver jewelry.

Start at Union Station (800 N. Alameda St.), turn left on W. Cesar Chavez Ave., then turn left again on Olvera St. and continue till you reach El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument.

Olvera Street, one of the best walks in LA

Olvera Street is the oldest part of the Downtown, so it’s for a good reason called “the birthplace of Los Angeles.”

Old structure on Olvera Street in Los Angeles

Some of the city’s oldest structures are in this area. Among them is “ La Placita ” the first church built in L.A. (1822), which still remains a focal point for the Latino community.

"La Placita" the first church built in Los Angeles

Also in the Historic Center is Union Station , the main railway station in Los Angeles and the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States.

Union Station in L.A.

Since you are so close to it, I suggest taking a short tour. Union Station is more than just a bustling transportation hub. It’s a true cultural center and one of Los Angeles’ most important landmarks, so you won’t regret visiting it.

Head next to Chinatown , one of LA’s oldest neighborhoods, just a 10 minutes walk from Union Station via N Alameda St.

city tour map los angeles

The original Chinatown, which developed in the mid-1800s, was demolished in 1930s, to make room for Union Station.

A walk through this neighborhood will take you past neon-embellished pagodas, funky shops filled with Chines herbs, goods, and lucky bamboo, and many Chinese eateries and businesses.

Start at the East Gate (930 N. Broadway) leading into Chinatown’s Central Plaza, where tourists mingle with Westside families and Chinese seniors playing xiangqi (Chinese chess).

Chinatown neighborhood in Los Angeles

Head west across Gin Ling Way to the shops that sell an eclectic array of Asian-influenced collectibles, art and books. The area bustles with life, energy and color. Throw a coin for good luck into the wishing wells here, then cross Hill St. and turn south Chung King Rd. lined with art galleries.

Chinatown Gateway Monument (The Dragon Gate)

Although much smaller than the Chinese neighborhoods of New York, or San Francisco, you’ll still find great food and numerous Chinese specialty stores in Chinatown L.A.

Continue your Downtown LA tour with a walk on Bunker Hill . Back in the 19th century, Bunker Hill was an exclusive suburb filled with filled with Victorian-style homes for the upper-class residents of Los Angeles.

But in the 1920s, the wealthy residents of Bunker Hill began leaving for more affluent enclaves, such as Beverly Hills and Pasadena . As a result, Bunker Hilled turned into a rundown working class neighborhood.

city tour map los angeles

In the late 20th century, the hill was lowered in elevation, and the entire area was redeveloped with modern structures for residences, commerce, and entertainment. Today’s Bunker Hill is a mixture of commercial high rises and arts venues.

There are quite a few places worth visiting in this area of the city, like the L.A. Central Library, Angels Flight Railway, Bunker Hill Steps, and Central Market.

Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in the Music Center Plaza

Start your walk at the Music Center Plaza , home to LA’s most famous cultural venues: Walt Disney Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion , and Ahmanson Theater .

This area of the Downtown is also home to some of the most amazing rooftop bars in Los Angeles, so if you have time you should drop by and admire the beautiful view of the city from high above.

Self guided walking tour map of Downtown Los Angeles

From the Music Center head southwest on N Grand Ave. then turn right unto W 5th Street to reach the Bunker Hill Steps. This is a 15 minute walk.

The elegant steps provide a shortcut between Bunker Hill and the Los Angeles Public Library. There is a beautiful water fountain that cascades down to the bottom of the steps.

Bunker Hill Steps

There are 294 steps, but luckily you’ll be climbing down. This is a wonderful place to take a walk through, so don’t forget to bring your camera.

Right across from the Bunker Hill Steps, at 630 W 5th Street, is the Los Angeles Public Library , which has been designated a Historic Cultural Monument.

L.A. Public Library

The building itself is an architectural gem, featuring a tiled pyramid roof and a beautiful garden. Inside the library there are many beautiful spaces, like the Atrium of the Tom Bradley wing, or the stairway outside the Getty Gallery.

The Atrium of the Tom Bradley Wing at the L.A. Public Library

But the focal point of the library is the Rotunda, a huge hall covered with elaborate paintings and a gigantic dome ceiling.

Visiting the L.A. Public Library on a self guided walking tour of Downtown Los Angeles

After visiting the L.A. Public Library, head southeast on W 5th St then turn left onto S Grand Ave then turn right to take the stairs towards Angels Flight Railway . This is a short 8 minute walk.

Just a short 8 minute walk from the LA Central Library will take you to one of Los Angeles’ oldest landmarks : Angels Flight Railway . This 120 years old cable car that takes passengers up to the top of Bunker Hill from the Pershing Square Metro station, is the world’s shortest ride. It takes only 50 seconds!

Downtown Los Angeles walking tour map

To get there, head southeast on W 5th St toward S Grand Ave., turn left onto S Grand Ave. then turn right and take the stairs.

If you ever wanted to ride the funicular from the movie La-La Land , here is your chance. The funicular appeared in movies ever since 1918, but more recently it was used to film Ryan Gosling’s and Emma Stone’s characters riding it in the 2016 film  La La Land .

Visiting Angels Flight in Downtown Los Angeles on a self guided walking tour

Angels Flight has two funicular cars –  Olivet  and  Sinai – running in opposite directions on a shared cable. The cost is only $1 each way and the experience is really fun!

The Bradbury is one of the oldest commercial buildings in downtown L.A., just a short 4 minute walk from Angels Flight Railway. Head northeast on S Hill St toward W 3rd St., then turn right on 3rd Street. Bradbury Building is at the corner of Broadway and 3rd Street, at 304 S Broadway.

map of a self guided tour in Downtown Los Angeles

From the outside you may not think much of this structure, but when you step inside you’ll be fairly impressed.

Self guided walking tour of the Bradbury Building in Downtown Los Angeles

The interior is nothing short of spectacular, with marble stairwells, ornate iron railings and Mexican tile. There is also a set of bird-cage style elevators which I’ve only seen in the Art Deco buildings in Europe.

Bird-cage style elevator at Bradbury Building

The great thing about getting inside Bradbury Building is that it’s free. However, you can only go up to the first stair landing since there are working business there. Even so, it’s still worth visiting this historic landmark.

Right half a block away from Bradbury Building, at 317 Broadway, you can visit the busy scene of the Grand Central Market . This iconic food hall is home to an array of multicultural stands and food stops.

Visiting Grand Central Market in Los Angeles on a self guided walking tour

There are butchers, fishmongers, spice sellers, and dozens of cafés and food stands, each with their own unique history. But there are also long lines at Grand Central Market, so if you plan to eat here be prepared to stand in line. However, the food is awesome!

From the Grand Central Market continue on South Broadway for two more blocks, till you reach 6th Street. Here you’ll find yourself in the middle of the historic Broadway Theater District , that stretches for six blocks from 3rd to 9th Streets along South Broadway.

Los Angeles Broadway Historic Theater District Map.

The Theatre District  is home to a beautiful collection of grandiose old movie palaces built between 1910s and 1930’s. Many of these theaters began as vaudeville stages and later transformed into movie theaters.

Los Angeles Theater

We didn’t discover these historic buildings till recently, when we decided to take a tour of the Theater District. Walking into these theaters felt like looking through a window into the entertainment industry’s heyday. What surprised us is that some of these historic buildings seem much bigger on the inside than on the outside.

Interior of the Million Dollar Theater in Los Angeles Theater District

The tour takes you inside some of this ornate movie palaces, like Los Angeles Theater, Million Dollar Theater, Orpheum Theater, or the Theater at Ace Hotel.

Los Angeles is a collection of neighborhoods with distinct personalities, connected by streets that can stretch for miles. The points of interest may be very far apart from each other and some walks may include loops, slopes, or stair climbing.

So how are you going to manage if you have problems walking? Just do what the locals do: drive or take the bus to your favorite walk. Public transportation works pretty well in Los Angeles, although it’s not always time efficient.

If you decide to drive, there are plenty of parking structures all around the city, but the fees may be quite steep. Another option is Uber or Lyft. However, I believe that taking a walking tour is the best way to explore Downtown Los Angeles.

Like all large US metropolitan cities, Downtown Los Angeles consists of safe and quite unsafe areas for walking, especially after dark. There are some nice sections, and some very run down sections where you are likely to feel uncomfortable. For this reason, I recommend choosing very carefully where you want to stay in L.A ., in case you decide to book a hotel in the Downtown area.

Overall, Downtown Los Angeles is not a dangerous place to walk during the daytime, or even early evening. But the scenery can change abruptly: now you are in a very populated place, with lots of activities around and then, a couple of blocks away, you find yourself in a poor and deserted and area with no people around. So have to know where you’re going before starting your walk.

The walking tour suggested in this post however, will only take you through the safest areas in Downtown Los Angeles, where I myself feel pretty safe walking.

I was so thrilled to see this article before coming to L.A. because I was totally lost on what I could in the downtown area. Thank you so much for very detailed and accurate information on locations and cross streets. The self guided tour was easy to follow and such a beautiful sight to see. Once again thanks so much. I had a fantastic time!!

Self guided walking tour is something I always prefer to do in any city that I visit, but I never thought walking around LA is even possible. Good to know that its not only possible but also a good way to explore certain areas of the city. Olvera street looks gorgeous. If you had only shown me a pic, I wouldn’t even have guessed it is LA. The architecture of LA Public Library is definitely interesting. Angel’s Flight? That’s quite intriguing. I really wouldn’t miss the funicular ride!

January 11, 2021 at 11:39 am

We enjoyed your walking tour of LA! We’ve been to LA and your post brings back so much memories of the last time we’ve been there. We actually have not been able to visit the spots you mention here as we went from one destination to another when we were there. So next time, we’ll definitely check these spots out. Thanks a lot!

January 10, 2021 at 4:00 am

haha that’s so true. When I visited downtown LA and I walked everywhere alone, I found it strange that there were not many people walking. Even when I inquired at the hostel I stayed, they said the same. But honestly, I loved exploring the city by walk and I saw more things than I could have if I had taken a cab or a car.

January 9, 2021 at 5:44 pm

The elevator area in Bradbury Building reminded me of a building in Denver, but the name of the building is not in my head now. I didn’t know that LA also has funicular cars. That’s cool! This walking tour give me ideas on what to do if I stop in LA.

ROFL, you’re so right. No one walks in LA. Loved the idea of this tour. The map will make it easy to follow if I decide to try it. Union Station is a definite must for the architecture alone. Wow, the LA Public Library mural!. Okay, you’ve convinced me and I must try this but will wait until things open up so I don’t miss out.

January 9, 2021 at 10:52 am

Hahaha, glad I convinced you, Debra.

I must admit we went from sight to sight when we visited LA and did not spend much time walking. This path looks like a great route to try. I love the variety in neighborhoods and architecture you passed by. We would definitely head inside the Public Library!

January 8, 2021 at 1:58 pm

It’s definitely worth doing at least once.

January 7, 2021 at 8:17 am

I enjoyed following you on this walking tour of LA. I visited about 20 years ago but stuck to all the tourist sites and so didn’t see much of the real LA. I like your use of maps to show the walking route – really helpful for people to be able to follow easily. It’s nice to explore your own city, I often go to London and just wander around, it’s amazing what you can discover!

January 7, 2021 at 11:07 am

Thank you, Angela. Glad you found the maps useful.

October 9, 2021 at 11:41 pm

Unfortunately most of these places are closed due to CV19. Bradbury has been closed to the public for some time now. Most of the theaters are closed too. Million Dollar theater is in the middle of construction. If you Google these places, most won’t tell you correct info of hours or if it’s even open, due to lack of update. However, this article and this tour guide are spot on, so worth bookmarking and visiting once the mandated and CV19 is clear.

October 10, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Unfortunately we live such unusual times, that you don’t know what’s open and what’s not. This summer most of these places were open. At any rate, hope you’ll get to visit downtown Los Angeles once we get a break from Covid. ”

I would love to write about my city like this. Angels Flight station looks like a must-do. You make LA sound so much fun.

The city of Glendale is putting the finishing touches on its quick-build North Brand Boulevard Complete Streets Demonstration Project , which features painted curb extensions and new barrier-protected bike lanes.

Glendale's Brand Boulevard demonstration is located just north of downtown Glendale, along one of the city's most renowned streets. The project extends a half-mile between Glenoaks Boulevard and Mountain Street.

This part of Brand is about a hundred feet wide, so the city was able to add two protected bike lanes while preserving plenty of driving capacity and diagonal parking. Much of the project involved a road diet, trimming five lanes for cars down to three.

The project includes a lot of bright paint: light green pavement in bike lane conflict zones and bike boxes, and bright geometric patterns in pedestrian areas.

The new bike lanes are protected by concrete jersey barriers, which are fairly easy to add, remove, or adjust if needed. (Glendale uses similar barriers - with decorative paint treatments - at its in-street Al Fresco outdoor dining locations.)

Walk Bike Glendale has posted a highlight reel ironically titled "no one bikes on Brand." When Streetsblog visited the project last Saturday, there were a handful of cyclists using the new lanes. The project was mostly serving people on foot.

Dozens of people were walking in the new bike/ped spaces, which serve as a needed extra sidewalk, especially at the south end of the project where there is commercial development with some sidewalk space used for outdoor dining. Cyclists and pedestrians share these sorts of spaces fairly easily.

Learn more about Glendale's Brand project at the project webpage and the city's Share Space and Place story arc site , which includes a feedback survey. The Brand demonstration project is temporary. The city is committed to keeping it in place through this fall, and may make it permanent - depending on community feedback.

There are several other Glendale active transportation projects in the works: extending Glenoaks bike lanes , adding protected bike lanes on La Crescenta Avenue , a new gap closure bikeway (between Burbank and Griffith Park) on or near Victory Boulevard , a new walk/bike bridge to Griffith Park , pedestrian upgrades on Colorado Street , a planned speed camera pilot , and more. Get involved with Walk Bike Glendale to support these and further improvements.

The Kansas City Royals (22-16) kick off a 7-game road trip with the 1st game of 4-game series against the Los Angeles Angels (14-23). First pitch from Angel Stadium is at 9:38 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Royals vs. Angels odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Angels won series 4-2 in 2023

The Royals have won 5 of their last 8 games overall and finished their 6-game homestand 3-3, taking 2 of 3 games from the Milwaukee Brewers. They won the finale on Wednesday 6-4.

The Angels return home after going 3-3 on their 6-game road trip. They took 2 out of 3 from the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning the final 2 games of the series, including a 5-4 win Wednesday.

Royals at Angels projected starters

RHP Michael Wacha vs. LHP Reid Detmers

Wacha (1-4, 5.50 ERA) makes his 8th start. He has a 1.46 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9 and 7.4 K/9 in 37 2/3 IP.

  • Last start: Loss, 3 2/3 IP, 7 ER, 9 H, 1 BB, 3 K in 15-4 home loss to Texas Rangers on Saturday

  • Moneyline (ML) : Royals -120 (bet $120 to win $100) | Angels +100 (bet $100 to win $100)
  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Royals -1.5 (+140) | Angels +1.5 (-165)
  • Over/Under (O/U) : 8.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Royals at Angels picks and predictions

Royals 6, Angels 4

The Angels are only 4-11 at home this season.

Neither starter has been good recently (Wacha has allowed 11 ER in last 2 starts while Detmers has allowed 12).

The Royals have won 5 of their last 7 series openers. Betting them on the moneyline is fine but you have better value on the run line.

Run line/Against the spread

Seven of the Angels’ last 8 losses have been by 2 or more runs while 5 of the Royals’ last 6 wins and 16 of their 22 total wins have been by multiple runs.

BET ROYALS -1.5 (+140) .

Four of their 6 meetings last season and 8 of their last 10 have not reach 8 total runs. But both starters have given up a lot of runs in recent starts.

The Royals’ last 2 games and 3 of the last 5 have had more than 8 total runs.

The Angels’ last 2 games and 10 of the last 14 have had at least 8 runs.

BET OVER 8.5 (-105) .

How to buy fujii kaze tickets before his tour starts this month.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Fujii Kaze is going on tour in 2024, with tickets selling fast as he travels to perform across the United States. While his upcoming concert series only features a few shows, there are a few avenues for how to buy Fujii Kaze tickets to his 2024 performances.

Beginning shortly after the release of the hit song "Overflowing," Fujii Kaze is traveling to the United States for some highly anticipated concert dates this spring. His brief U.S. tour begins on May 30 in Los Angeles at the United Theater and concludes on June 3 in New York City at the Apollo Theater. Therefore, the opportunities to see the viral singer perform live in the U.S. this year are limited.

After Fujii Kaze's last tour rapidly sold out, tickets for this year's U.S. performances are, as expected, going fast. With the "Fujii Kaze and the Piano" 2024 US Tour arriving on the heels of his new song release, this year's concert series offers a fresh experience for those waiting to see the "Shinunoga E-Wa" singer-songwriter live.

We've got you covered if you're looking for how to get tickets to Fujii Kaze's U.S. concert tour. Here's our breakdown of the Fujii Kaze and the Piano tour schedule, purchasing details, and original and resale ticket price comparisons. You can also browse ticket and concert specifics at your leisure on StubHub and Vivid Seats .

Fujii Kaze 2024 tour schedule

Fujii Kaze's U.S. tour only consists of four concert dates, which resulted from adding two additional shows to the tour's original number. The Fujii Kaze and the Piano tour will see the singer perform two shows in Los Angeles in May before quickly heading to the other side of the country. Fujii Kaze's 2024 US tour will conclude after his two shows in New York City on June 2 and 3.

All concert times are listed in local time zones.

How to buy tickets for Fujii Kaze 2024 concert tour

Since tickets to the Fujii Kaze and the Piano US tour went on sale on March 12, the remaining original tickets are extremely limited in quantity. Tickets to Fujii Kaze's New York City performances were initially being sold on Ticketmaster. In contrast, his Los Angeles tickets were sold on AXS, but all four shows are now completely sold out of original passes.

As such, the only way to buy tickets for Fujii Kaze's 2024 US tour is through verified resale ticket vendors. While some resale tickets are still being sold through Ticketmaster and AXS, many are available on sites like StubHub and Vivid Seats for Fujii Kaze's upcoming sold-out concerts. The latter two vendors may offer more variety in available seating options.

How much are Fujii Kaze tickets?

Considering the Fujii Kaze and the Piano US tour is completely sold out of original tickets and only includes four shows, it shouldn't be surprising that the tickets are relatively expensive. While standard seats were originally much cheaper for those who got early access in the presale queue, Fujii Kaze's 2024 tour tickets are now much more pricey on resale sites.

The demand for tickets is high, and the cost of available resale tickets reflects this. Furthermore, ticket prices to see the Japanese songwriter live in the United States still vary by date, location, and seat location for each show.

On StubHub , the cheapest remaining tickets for Fujii Kaze's 2024 tour range from $250 for his May 30 show in Los Angeles, CA, to $495 for his June 2 performance in New York City, NY. Vivid Seats offers comparable prices for resale tickets, with the least expensive passes beginning from $249 to $559 for the same dates and locations.

So far, Fujii Kaze hasn't announced any VIP packages for his US concert dates in 2024. However, some premium seats, such as the orchestra section, are still available on verified ticket resale sites for his Los Angeles and California performances.

Who is opening for Fujii Kaze's tour?

Fujii Kaze will not have an opening act for his 2024 tour. On his website , his concerts in the United States are being promoted as a "One-Man Show," highlighting the intimate nature of the shows with just Fujii Kaze and his fans.

This means that once the showtime begins, he will be the one who arrives onstage. The concert length is listed as lasting from 8:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., but his shows' full duration and ending time are still subject to change.

After performing four concerts in the United States, Fujii Kaze will continue his 2024 tour with two additional international shows. So far, the artist has confirmed that he will play two shows in Japan on August 24 and 25 at Nissan Stadium.

According to the artist's website , details about his Japan shows and ticket specifics will be announced on May 10, 2024. It's still unclear if an opening act will be announced for his upcoming Nissan Stadium shows in Japan.
