Customer Reviews

Starting your day with a good cup of coffee is a must. Starting your day with Hacienda Prosperidad coffee is a blessing. If you’re in the area take advantage of this tour, if you’re not, it’s worth the scenic drive. The tour was informative, fun but also lovely to see the passion the owners Alberto Jose and Marjorie have for coffee and Puerto Rico. We did the tour with our teenage daughter, it’s so beautiful, she wanted to stay. Thank you Hacienda Prosperidad for the experience!

We were a group of 8 person and we all enjoyed the tour a lot. First we visited the coffee plantation which was beautiful and it had many other tree species such as oranges. After the walk we heard about the history and some interesting facts of coffee than came the practical part where we could make our own roasted coffee. The tour was interesting and feels special also because the owner of the hacienda guides it.Highly recommended!

We learned so much during our time on this tour. Highly recommended if you are interested in how coffee is grown, processed and brewed.

Excelente servicio y lugar. El workshop es algo que no lo van a encontrar en mas ningun lugar. La historia y el conocimiento sobre el cafe y el proceso por el cual te llecan es algo brutal. 100% recomendado!!

10 Trips for a Coffee Tour of the World

Who said you couldn’t plan a whole vacation around coffee? From drinking fresh-roasted java on a coffee plantation in Java to sipping an espresso in its Italian birthplace, every day can be International Coffee Day with a coffee-based trip. Dive into coffee culture in Melbourne, taste true Turkish coffee in Istanbul, and sample some of the world’s most expensive beans on a coffee tour in Hawaii. Grab a cup of joe and start planning your coffee trip around the world.

Italy – Birthplace of Espresso

Cup of coffee in Italy

A pilgrimage to Italy is a must for any coffee connoisseur. It’s the country that invented espresso and the cappuccino, after all. So, it’s no wonder that Italy has a strong coffee culture ruled by seemingly mysterious rituals and rules. Learn the ins and outs with a local guide on a coffee and dessert tour in Rome or Venice .

Tips for Ordering Coffee in Italy:

  • Don’t order milky coffee drinks, such as a cappuccino, caffé latte, or latte macchiato, after 11 AM. Italians consider them bad for digestion if consumed later in the day.
  • If you order a latte, you’ll just get a cup of milk (since that is what you said in Italian). A caffé latte (coffee with milk) is probably what you’re after.
  • Don’t expect a to-go cup. Most Italian café’s serve their coffee in porcelain or glass cups and patrons stand at the bar or sit to enjoy their hot beverage. When in Rome….

Jamaica – Home of Blue Mountain Coffee

Blue Mountain Coffee beans on a coffee tour of a plantation

The cool misty mountains of Jamaica are some of the tallest in the Caribbean with rainfall and soil ideal for growing coffee. So, it’s no wonder that Blue Mountain Coffee, renowned for its mild flavor and lack of bitterness, is one of the most desirable and expensive coffees in the world. Go to the source on a coffee plantation tour in the Blue Mountains and try a freshly roasted cup on the farm. Learn about the labor-intensive process of harvesting, sorting, and vetting these world-class beans and take home a bag—or two—for yourself.

Melbourne, Australia – Coffee Capital of Australia

Coffee tour in Melbourne, Australia

Does Melbourne have the best cafes in the world ? Judge for yourself with a trip to the Coffee Capital of Australia. Casual, eclectic, and quality-focused, coffee culture in Melbourne is more about enjoying a steamy cup of joe with a delicious bite to eat with good company than fueling up with your daily caffeine hit. Discover the city’s hidden-gem coffee shops with a local guide on a café culture walking tour of Melbourne.

Turkey – Take a Coffee Trip Through History

Cup of Turkish coffee in Istanbul

Drinking richly flavored, unfiltered coffee in Turkey is a coffee vacation must. The first coffee beans arrived in Istanbul in 1519, and it didn’t take long for this new drink to catch on. Turkish coffee culture and tradition is even recognized on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Sip this unique brew in historical venues and see old bazaars where people traded these magical beans on a small-group coffee tour of Istanbul . Then, learn the fine art and proper tools to make your own cup of Turkish coffee.

Tips for Drinking Turkish Coffee:

  • Since sugar is cooked directly with the coffee grounds, request your sweetness level when you place your order.
  • Swirl your cup slightly before each sip to remix the grounds with the water for a full-flavored experience.
  • Don’t drink the last drop! Since Turkish coffee is unfiltered, all the grounds settle at the bottom of your cup. Leave the last gritty bit in the bottom to avoid spoiling the experience.

Colombia – Bean to Brew Coffee Tour

Picking coffee beans in Colombia

Blessed with an ideal geography and climate for growing coffee, Colombia produces some of the world’s best coffee. Meet up with a master barista in Bogota or Cartagena to fine-tune your palate by sampling beans from different regions in Colombia and discover how various brewing techniques affect flavor. If you really want to get down to the soil of coffee production in Colombia, journey to a family-run farm for a hands-on coffee tour . See the whole process from seed to cup—and you can even head into the fields to pick coffee cherries yourself.

Vienna, Austria – Elegant Coffee Houses

Coffee and cake served in Vienna

In Vienna, coffee is not just a drink, it’s an experience . Listed as part of Vienna’s intangible cultural heritage, UNESCO describes Viennese coffee house culture as a place “where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill.” Relaxing in elegance as you enjoy your drink—and perhaps a slice of cake—served on a silver tray is a coffee vacation in itself. Avoid the tourist-crowded coffee shops by taking a food and coffee tour with a local .

Hawaii, USA – Kona Coffee Plantation Tour

Welcome to Kona sign in Hawaii

One of the priciest and most prized coffees in the world, Kona coffee grows only on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Tour a Kona coffee plantation to see how this gourmet coffee goes from bean to brew. Then, sample its sweet, fruity flavor and see if you can detect its natural hint of nuts or spice when you drink a freshly roasted cup.

Tips for Buying Kona Coffee in Hawaii:

  • Look for labels that say 100% Kona coffee. Many gift shops in Hawaii sell Kona coffee blends that are usually only 10% Kona coffee beans.
  • Buy whole beans instead of grounds. You get more flavor when you grind them just before brewing.
  • Store your coffee in an airtight container in the freezer to optimize freshness when you return from your coffee vacation.

Indonesia – Caffeine-fueled Island Hopping

Coffee cherries in a hand

Of course, a world coffee tour wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Java. Visit the Banaran Coffee Plantation that has been growing quality robusta coffee since 1919 and enjoy a caffeinated cup of java in Java. Indonesia produces quality roasts across its islands, but be sure to include Bali on your coffee vacation. Sample beans sustainably grown alongside vanilla vines and cinnamon and clove trees while hearing about the socially responsible practices of Geo Coffee on a tour on Bali .

Seattle, USA – One of the Best Coffee Cities

Pike Place Market where the original Starbucks is in Seattle

It’s no secret that Seattle reigns as the epicenter of coffee culture in the United States . Birthplace of Starbucks, you can even buy your favorite roast at the original location in Pike Place Market . But beyond the coffee giant, Seattle thrives with a buzzing coffee culture in its many amazing coffee shops . Any coffee-lover’s trip to Seattle should include sipping your nitro cold brew while looking out through a rain-streaked window.

Vietnam – Vietnamese Coffee Vacation

Vietnamese coffee in Vietnam

As the second-largest coffee producer in the world, Vietnam brews its own unique style of coffee that’s well worth a trip. Vietnamese coffee starts with robusta beans, known for their high caffeine content and bitter bite, roasted with butter and brandy. Traditionally, the coarsely ground beans are brewed through a metal drip filter called a phin then mixed with sweetened condensed milk. You can have it cool with ice or whipped with an egg for a custardy beverage. Discover all the ways to appreciate coffee in Hanoi with a local guide .

Finca El Ocaso

Salento is probably the most visited town in the Colombian Coffee Region, so it’s where most people end up taking a coffee tour. There are two excellent coffee tours available in and around the town (see the second below), and Finca El Ocaso’s tour is one of them. Taking place on a lovely little traditional farm, the tour offers a comprehensive introduction to the growing process of Colombian coffee.

The lovely main house at El Ocaso

Travesia Coffee

A speciality coffee company operating coffee shop tours in Bogota, Travesia’s tours are another great way to get to know the Bogota coffee scene with passionate local experts. With coffee shop tours in both La Candelaria and Chapinero neighbourhoods, Travesia Coffee Tours are the perfect introduction to Colombian coffee before you head off into the Coffee Region.

La Victoria Coffee Plantation

La Victoria Coffee Plantation is a lovely traditional coffee farm just outside Minca in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains on the Colombian Caribbean coast. It also boasts some of the oldest machinery of any farm in Colombia, and their unique tour explains how their old yet effective harvesting system works, entirely through water and machinery dating back to the era of Queen Victoria (hence the name).

Coffee drying at La Victoria

Finca Milena, Jardin

Jardin in Antioquia department might just be one of the most beautiful coffee towns you’ll ever visit, so it makes sense to take a coffee tour while you’re there. Finca Don Eduardo

The other top coffee tour in Salento takes place on the little coffee farm of Don Eduardo, a local Colombian coffee farmer with a lifetime of knowledge and experience, all of which he brings to the tour with his passion and enthusiasm. It’s perhaps a more authentic experience than El Ocaso, and the positive reviews for Don Eduardo and his tour just keep coming!

He does not only do coffee trip, but also private tours. We visited a temple and delivered food to the monks, followed by a visit to the Longneck Village. After that we enjoyed a delicious Thai lunch. Later, we explored the Sticky Waterfalls. We walked from bottom to top through the water, which was so much fun. Our day was truly amazing, all thanks to Jack and his wife. The guide was extremely friendly, spoke excellent English, and could explain everything to us. We wholeheartedly recommend him!" He has the best attitude and energy, very helpful and will go above and beyond to make sure you have the most memorable experience. It was raining in the morning of our tour so he switched things around so that we could take good photos and enjoy the attractions but still get to visit all the places that were planned. We got to try to the khao soi in town, learned a lot about Lanna history and Thai culture. He’s truly knowledgeable! Our trip went so smoothly and full of laughter. • larimer h 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Very personalized tour of Chiang Mai... highly recommended! Jack is very accommodating and easy to talk to. I booked last minute and he responded quickly to my inquiry. He was able to make an itinerary that was kid-friendly, as I was with my toddler during the tour. It was very personalized and met my specific needs. He is also a good storyteller. Not only did he explain the history of the temples we visited, but he also told us about life in Chiang Mai in general, and his personal experiences as well. Jack is very helpful in many ways. He helped me with carrying my kid’s stroller as some parts of the temples do not have ramps. He also helped me in suggesting what to do after the tour (which areas we can visit since our time was limited). And lastly, he helped me make our short stay in Chiang Mai very memorable. Highly recommended! Read more Written February 19, 2023

  • Kelandin10 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Customized Tour: Northern Thailand From Chang Mai, Doi Suthep, Sticky waterfall, to Doi Inthanon Hill tribe homestay and Sukhothai ancient ruin bike tour. Jack took great care of us. My favorite part was when he took us to his friends house in the mountains of Doi Inthanon where we picked our vegetables for our dinner, cooked dinner with our village tribe homestay family, walked on the farm and met local hill tribe farmers, and even got to roast coffee while we were there from the local arabica plants in the backyard. After staying with the hill tribe village Chief Jack knew we wanted to see ancient ruins and recommended we bike around in Sukhothai. This was amazing since many tourists do not come here since it's farther away from Bangkok. We wanted to see Northern Thailand and we didn't really have much of a plan and good thing since Jack consulted with us about what we like and he gave us suggestions which we were super interested in and super grateful for. Jack... What to say. Jack is super fun, very flexible, and incredibly kind. His English is very good and he showed us an amazing time around Northern Thailand in just 4 Days. I would recommend talking with Jack first before planning a super Rigid plan. Being flexible and talking with a local who has 20 years of experience in tourism in Thailand is what you get when you talk with Jack. If I could give 6 stars I would. Highly highly recommend staying overnight in Hill tribe village!!!! Much Love Jack 🙏🏽🕉️✌🏽 Read more Written February 5, 2023
  • 515adav 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wow, read this- What a tour!! Jack is very professional and experienced. What made him excellent is his ability to gather information on what you want and provide you with the best options. His understanding of traffic patterns, and other variables gave him the insight to provide great suggestions, which I'm glad we followed because he was right about the best food, coffee, and views and historical sites that had the least amount of crowded tourists. We also got to see the only elephant hospital! So cool! Jack also has an exclusive relationship with a specific hill tribe that only allows his guests to visit as if they are family. We stayed in a very clean and bamboo home, picked fresh vegetables and cooked them with our hosts and enjoyed a hot shower in the jungle. Wow. What a way to unplug and enjoy the peaceful nature! Jack is an experienced tourguide who is very motivated to give you the best tour experience in Chiang Mai! We went on a full day tour to Doi Ithanon National Park, where we did a beautiful hike, saw the King & Queen Pagoda, one of the most beautiful waterfalls I've seen and a local market. Jack is very flexible, happy to customize tours and itineraries. Communication with him is very clear, via email or whatsapp, and he speaks very well English. The Thai tourism industry is very slowly recovering from the Covid crisis, and I encourage everybody to do book tours at guides like Jack because nowhere in the world you get such quality for your buck, and they deserve your business. • Debbie H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous Time with Jack We spent two fabulous days with Jack during our visit to Chiang Mai. If you are looking for a guide or driver, look no further...hire Jack. He is an absolute gem. For our first day, we drove the couple of hours to Doi Inthanon in Jack's super-comfortable and spacious van. We hiked in the beautiful park with a local guide for a couple of hours, and visited the King and Queen pagodas. We also went to a beautiful waterfall. Perhaps the highlight of the day, though, was the lunch we had with Jack's friend Mr Charlie and his wife. They graciously welcomed us into their beautiful bamboo home in a small hill village, and made us lunch from delicious fresh vegetables picked that morning from the farm where they grow crops for The Royal Project. They were such lovely people and it was an incredible experience...do not miss this if you have the opportunity. The second day Jack picked us up early to drive to Doi Suthep before sunrise. I highly recommend this. The temple is beautiful in daylight, but simply breathtaking before dawn. It is still pretty quiet there at that time of day, and watching the sun come up over the city was lovely. We then visited two other lovely temples (Wat Phalat and Wat Umong) before wrapping up with delicious Khao Soi at a local restaurant. Try not to eat anything for breakfast and hold out for this delicious (and filling) meal. Jack is patient, relaxedand flexible. He has a great smile and an infectious laugh. When we return to Chiang Mai we won't hesitate to book more time with him. Sabai sabai Jack...until next time! Read more Written January 22, 2023

Lucky for us he was available, post Covid tourism is only just picking up speed. He is a lovely guy, good guide, safe driver, great vehicle and ammenities. We at the last minute added on elephant (living green elephant sanctuary) tour which he was able to accommodate and combine our preferences at short notice, customising other details to suit us along the way. We arranged our day tour to Dhoi Inthanon NP the night before and Jack was at our hotel al 7am sharp the next day. He made a nice itinerary for us but was very flexibel during the day itself. It wasn’t a problem at all if we wanted to stay longer at some spots. He also makes amazing coffee, knows a lot about the region and is more than happy to help you with giving tips about further travels in Thailand! Read more Written January 10, 2023

We visited temples with his guidance and suggestions and visited the sticky waterfalls. Knowing how much we love authentic Thai food, he took us to a favourite spot for outstanding food. His English is impeccable, and he added a great deal of detail to our tour. I can’t recommend enough! Such a lovely find for us. He took us to the temple, and knew a great deal about it. He was great with our sons, aged 7 and 14, made them laugh and feel involved. We went to eat at a local Thai restaurant that he recommended, it had a Michelin Star for the dish we were served. All 4 of us ate for 350 baht and it was divine! He then took us to the sticky rice falls, which was a ton of fun. We were with him from 7am-5pm, and he was on for the duration. If you want a private driver, you will not find a better experience. Thanks Jack!!! Read more Written December 28, 2022

5 Best Amsterdam Coffeeshops

A guide to coffeeshop culture.

coffee tour workshop

If you’re curious about the coffeeshop culture in Amsterdam and you want to find a great spot to visit, this post covers some of the most notable and historic locations in the city.

Our tour guides are always being asked about this subject, and we have compiled a lot of their most helpful advice in this post.

This guide also provides details about the differences between a coffee shop and a coffee house, what the rules are regarding the use of cannabis, and other helpful information.

For even more helpful suggestions, make sure to check our section for tips from locals and travelers to get their perspective as well!

Coffeeshop vs Coffeehouse: What’s the Difference?

If you’re just looking for a cup of coffee, chances are that you won’t have much trouble, because both coffee shops and coffee houses (koffiehuis) sell the delicious drink, as well as cafes!

However, visitors who want to partake in some cannabis will need to specifically find one of the many Amsterdam coffee shops, as they are the only locations that allow this activity.

Here are a few other details you might want to consider before heading out to a coffee shop.

Why do they call it a coffee shop in Amsterdam?

They do actually sell coffee at these shops, but the reason this specific name was chosen is that it was used as a cover before the legal policy on cannabis had been clarified.

Even though it has been decades since the policy was changed, the cover name for these locations remained the same.

Do Amsterdam cafes sell cannabis?

As if it weren’t confusing enough, there are also a lot of cafes in Amsterdam.

These quaint little restaurants do not offer cannabis. Instead, they focus primarily on coffee, juice, pastries, and other small snacks.

Can tourists visit an Amsterdam coffee shop?

Yes, of course!

Although there have been recent calls to make coffeeshops limits off-limits for tourists, no such measures have been put into place just yet.

Do Amsterdam coffee shops accept credit cards?

Most coffee shops in this city do not accept foreign credit cards, so you’ll need to bring cash if you want to visit.

Are Amsterdam coffee shops open all year round?

For the most part, yes.

That said, some will close for holidays, so you might have to look around for an open location on specific days of celebration such as Christmas.

Is Cannabis Actually Legal in Amsterdam?

Technically, it is not actually legal in the Netherlands.

That said, as long as you get it from a licensed coffee shop, possession of cannabis is permitted thanks to a legal grey area.

If you want to avoid getting in trouble, all you really have to do is stick to the licensed coffee shops, as they will ensure that your possession and use of cannabis is fully legal.

The law requires them to follow a specific set of regulations, including the following:

This street in Amsterdam is lined with coffeeshops and cafes. Image source: Pixabay user Kevin Phillips.

  • 5 grams or less: Amsterdam coffee shops are not allowed to sell more than 5 grams of cannabis to anyone in one day.
  • No advertisement: Coffeeshops are not allowed to advertise that they sell cannabis.
  • Age restrictions: Coffeeshops are not allowed to sell cannabis to minors under the age of 18.
  • No hard drugs: Cannabis is pretty much the only major drug they are allowed to sell.

For those who are still nervous, here are a few extra tips to consider:

  • Start slow: Don’t get out of control - if you’re new to cannabis, it probably won’t take a lot to feel the effects.
  • Ask the experts: If you’re going to visit a coffee shop, you can trust that the people working there probably have the answers to any questions you might have.
  • Visit multiple locations: If you’re not comfortable at one coffee shop, just head to another one!
  • Don’t take it to the airport: You won’t be allowed to take cannabis back onto an airplane, so there’s no point in buying a lot of it, which is another reason not to get carried away.

TIP: As recently as 2022, there have been calls to limit the sale of cannabis at coffee shops to only locals and residents of the city. The stated reason for this is that the city believes it attracts the wrong type of tourist.

If you want to help keep this fun activity legal and safe in Amsterdam, please be courteous and try not to cause a disturbance while in or around coffee shops, as it may send the wrong message.

This section will list some of the most historic and best coffee shops in Amsterdam, but if you want some help locating each of them, we recommend going on a coffee shop tour instead.

No matter which shops you choose, you can usually expect them to have a variety of both indica and sativa strains to choose from, pre-rolled joints, edibles such as space cakes or soda, and more on their menu.

1. Bulldog Coffeeshop

Leidseplein 15, 1017 PS Amsterdam

This is actually the first coffee shop in Amsterdam, so it’s definitely a great place to start if you’re looking for a location with history.

Another nice thing about this shop is that it’s centrally located.

They even have a hotel right next to the canal, and that might be a better option for anyone who wants to have easy access to marijuana/cannabis within a few minutes walk from their hotel room.

Jonge Roelensteeg 12- 14, 1012 PL Amsterdam

If you’re looking for a different kind of vibe, this spot is known for having very unique and creative interior design.

One of the nicest things about this shop is that they offer free internet and are friendly to tourists.

They also have longer opening hours than other locations, staying open until 1 am each night.

3. Grey Area

Oude Leliestraat 2, 1015 AW Amsterdam

Speaking of that legal grey area that allows Amsterdam coffee shops to sell cannabis, this is another great location you might want to visit.

Many consider them to have the best weed in the city, and it’s especially popular among Americans.

Famous visitors like Snoop Dogg, Bush, the Deftones, and more are just another reason why this is a favorite for many visitors.

4. Original Dampkring

Handboogstraat 29, 1012 XM Amsterdam

This is a great option for anyone who is new to cannabis, as they cater to international audiences.

If you’re a movie buff, you might want to visit just to see where the cast of Ocean’s 12 spent time while shooting in Amsterdam.

Like Abraxas, they are also open until 1 am each night.

5. Barney’s Coffeeshop

Haarlemmerstraat 102, 1013 EW Amsterdam

If you’re looking for some of the best marijuana in Amsterdam, Barney’s has won multiple awards for their weed.

They’re welcoming to both locals and tourists, and they also sell a variety of food as well.

As a matter of fact, they’re almost like a small restaurant, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner options.

The atmosphere here is relaxed, so it’s a great place to grab a bite and some bud.

While you can trust our tour guides to give you a lot of helpful advice and information while visiting Amsterdam, there are some cases where it might be a good idea to get a second opinion.

When it comes to the subject of coffeeshops, both locals and travelers can be quite opinionated!

If you want to see what they have to say, check either the Amsterdam Travel Tips group or our very own Amsterdam Travel Tips and Hacks group on Facebook.

Here are a few of the better suggestions and tips we found regarding Amsterdam coffeeshops.

Sometimes tourists will have concerns about how busy the coffeeshops can get, but as this traveler confirms, it's really not that much of a problem.

Try as we might, we couldn't find anyone reporting a problem with coffeeshops being too busy to serve them.

As the third commenter notes, even on holidays it's usually quite easy to find a table and get whatever you want or need.

If, like everyone else, you're trying to figure out which coffeeshop is the best, here are some of the most popular locations recommended by locals and travelers.

Katsu is one of the locations most frequently noted on various Amsterdam Facebook groups.

A lot of locals consider it their favorite spot, but it's also frequently mentioned alongside a lot of the more popular coffeeshops, including some of the following.

New Times is another popular option, and you can even see it listed right alongside Katsu in an earlier comment.

Of course, that's not to say that some of the more well-known locations aren't also well-liked.

Abraxas, Bulldog, and Grey Area often receive special mentions in these Facebook groups, although they are usually considered more touristy.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Inside the N.J. coffee shop celebrating Down syndrome, the ‘beauty of being different’

When Amanda Vellon opened the Inclusion Coffee Shop — the only café in the small borough of Elmer in Salem County — her goal was to live up to the restaurant’s name and welcome the community.

As customers walked into the shop on a recent morning, they walked by cheerful walls decorated with positive affirmations and were greeted by equally cheerful employee Anthony Tarquinio, who has Down syndrome.

Claire Wells, who also has Down syndrome, took orders and helped prepare the shop’s signature coffee drinks and breakfast sandwiches.

Meanwhile, by the window, Maddy McKinney, decorated the café's brown paper to-go bags with puns and drawings of animals. McKinney volunteers at the shop once a week as part of a Glassboro High School program for students with special needs.

“I didn’t just want to open a regular coffee shop, there was going to be a bigger purpose behind it,” said Vellon, a Vineland native. “I also wanted to just share the beauty of being different because whether you have a diagnosis or not, we’re all different and that should be okay.”

Vellon, opened the coffee shop on Main Street in April 2022, about a year after giving birth to her fourth child, Rome, who is now 2.

Her pregnancy with Rome was challenging, she said. She caught COVID-19 five months into her pregnancy, went in for an appointment and learned that Rome had a heart defect associated with the genetic disorder Down syndrome.

After giving birth and discovering Rome’s diagnosis, the building of a shuttered café in Elmer became available for purchase. It happened to be the only coffee shop in the 1,200-person town and the locals wanted it back, Vellon said.

“I had already thought about opening it back up but one night I was literally sitting on my couch holding Rome ... and he inspired me,” Vellon said. “I remember saying over and over like, we are going to inspire so many people with our story.”

Motivated by her family’s experience with Rome, Vellon reopened the establishment, naming it the Inclusion Coffee Shop — and vowing that the restaurant would employ and create a welcoming environment for people with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

Between volunteers and regular employees, the shop has about 10 staff members. More than half have a disability, the shop’s owner said.

Tarquinio, 32, was one of the café's first employees. He’s a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan and is known as the “celebrity” of the coffee shop because he had a role in “Zombie Wedding,” a movie filmed in Vineland and released last year.

McKinney, 19, volunteers for a few hours every Tuesday to decorate the to-go bags with puns and poems. Inspired by the 1960s tune “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss),” later remade by Cher in the 1990s, McKinney drew a fish on one bag and wrote, “If you wanna know if he loves you so, it’s in his fish.”

“I think people will like a little laugh in their day,” McKinney said while drawing.

Parents and families who visit the Inclusion Coffee Shop are reassured that the place is set up to cater to their needs, Vellon said.

For younger customers who might need something to fidget with, there’s the option to color their to-go bags with crayons. And, they can even step behind the counter to assist the employees with drink presentations, the owner said.

The coffee shop has also been host to various organizations and schools in South Jersey, bringing in students for field trips.

“When they come to the shop, they’re seeing that connection like, ‘Wait, this is not at school, this is at a place where there’s people working just like me and I could be working here to one day,’” Vellon said.

Other businesses in New Jersey, including Brandon’s Pancake House and Ice Cream Parlor in Wildwood Crest, have taken on a similar mission to accommodate and support individuals with disabilities.

Brandon’s, which opened last April, supplies a basket full of sensory toys, headphones and a special picture menu to enhance the experience for those with autism.

“I can say that one of the things that I have always instilled ... in the employees that work with me and even parents that come in is when your child comes in and whatever their their difference is, they are welcome here,” Vellon said.
