The Gitchi Gami Games are part of the Junior Cup and Youth Cup event series for the 2021-2022 ski season. The Junior National Qualifying series is governed by Central Cross-Country Skiing (CXC). It encourages young athletes from U8 to U23 age divisions to enjoy cross-country skiing and develop their skills, whether they are new to the sport, high school skiers, aspiring junior skiers who hope to compete at national and international levels, or somewhere in between.

The Gitchi Gami Games SuperTour, presented by the National Nordic Foundation 2021-22, will attract teams of regional, national, and international athletes, as well as pro athletes from Alaska, Montana, Utah, Idaho and Vermont. Newly formed Team Birkie will be in attendance, which is a pro composite team of athletes from the Midwest. Race organizers are expecting several hundred athletes, support staff and spectators will attend the races in the coming days, bringing highly sought-after shoulder season tourism to the Cable and Hayward area.

Gitchi Gami Games History

The Gitchi Gami Games were originally created by Tony Wise in the mid 70’s as an elite level cross country ski race that eventually became the first-ever Cross Country Ski World Cup Race in 1978.  The ABSF reintroduced the Gitchi Gami Games in 2018 to provide an opportunity for youth and elite level athletes to showcase their abilities at an internationally recognized venue and winter destination for tens of thousands of cross country skiers.

About Team Birkie

Central Cross Country Skiing (CXC), the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation, and the Loppet Foundation created a high performance racing team to inspire future generations of skiers and win Olympic medals. Team Birkie is based out of the Trailhead at Wirth Park, The Loppet Foundation’s headquarters in Minneapolis. Team Birkie will conduct training camps in the Hayward Area and around the Central Region, as well as training and competition trips around North America.  The team consists of pro athletes and college athletes which bridges the gap between collegiate racing and provides a platform for elite skiers to focus on their dream of making the U.S. Olympic Cross Country Ski Team.

An invitation to spectate: The SuperTour Races are Olympic qualifying events, and everyone will be at the start line ready to compete at their best. The stakes are high, so the atmosphere is engaging to be a part of. The athletes love having people show their support and due to the smaller footprint of the snowmaking loops, spectators will be able to see a lot of action on different parts of the course simultaneously.

Team Birkie athletes to watch:

  • Zak Ketterson returns to his stomping grounds this season in Cable at the American Birkebeiner Trailhead. There is always a benefit to competing on a familiar course and knowing how approach the race tactically and with smart pacing. Zak has two SuperTour wins to his name and hopes to contend for another at the Gitchi Gami Games. Look for Zak to be an all-around competitor who could be fighting for the SuperTour Overall position after the weekend. Zak finished first in the 10k Skate race at the SuperTour race last weekend in Duluth, MN.
  • Christian Gostout has shown his strengths as a distance skier finishing in the top 10 in both the skate and classic Birkie races last season. This year his coaches have continued to focus on his goal of racing in some of the long-distance events in Europe at the end of the year, while also refining his speed and power. Christian is incredibly agile on his skis and will shine in any tight sprint or mass start pack race.
  • Andrew Millan joined Team Birkie from an extensive running background which he honed as an athlete at Luther College in Iowa. He has had one of the quickest improvement curves his coaches have ever seen in cross country skiing. Andrew will be focusing on both sprint and distance events and hopes to qualify to compete in a few international races later this season.
  • Tony Mathie graduated from the University of Minnesota where he competed on the cross country skiing club team. Tony has some of the best technique on the circuit the coaches are excited to see him put together a weekend of competitive racing. Tony will be awesome in the skate races where he can produce enormous power and speed on the fast flat sections. The snow and courses are perfect for Tony, watch for him attacking the finishing sprints.
  • Brian Gregg looks to offer his extensive racing knowledge to the team while also competing in distance events. Brian will be very competitive in the 15K mass start skate race in Cable. He loves the courses and his race tactics are hard to beat with all his experience.
  • Ingrid Thyr is back to her Midwest roots this year after competing for Williams College in the East and Team Crosscut in the West. The opportunity to train and race out of several regions gives Ingrid a depth of experience and grit when it comes to challenging conditions and tough courses. Ingrid’s fitness and technique are at another level this year and she is looking at forward to the opportunity to turn some heads.
  • Julie Ensrud is ready to showcase her new sprint speed and power on the fast machine-made snowmaking loops that will be used in Cable. After many seasons of focusing on longer distance events, look for Julie to ski well when she gets into the head-to-head sprint races. After an extremely solid summer and fall of training, Julie is excited to use her new speed in her already strong distance events as well.
  • Jordan Schuster is fresh off the EISA circuit where she competed for St. Lawrence University. In her first year of training as a professional skier she has made an enormous jump in fitness and technique. The coaches look forward to Jordan attacking the mass start races on the final lap and throwing down her newfound speed and quickness on the steep and difficult terrain.

Men’s and Women’s Sprint

Tuesday saw SuperTour action in both the Men’s and Women’s Sprints. American, Sammy Smith, topped the women’s results ahead of Lilian Gagnon and Anna Marie Dietze, while Canada’s Julien Locke led the men’s field ahead of Walker Hall and Michael Earnhart.

In post-race interview with FasterSkier’s Nat Herz, Locke articulated the importance of doing well at these North American SuperTour races. “SuperTours [are] the top level of domestic racing,” he said. “So everyone who’s not at the World Cup is here right now . . . For the United States and Canada, these are selection races for the World Cup later in the year.”

Men’s and Women’s 10 k Classic Interval Start

In Wednesday’s 10 k Classic Interval Start, the men’s field was led by Maximillian Holman, ahead of Hugo Hinckfus and Hunter Wonders. Smith continued her winning ways at the head of the women’s field ahead of Sydney Palmer-Leger and Nina Schamberger.

Winner of the first two women’s events (Freestyle Sprint and 10 k Classic), Smith commented on the heavy/fresh snow conditions in Anchorage. “The snow definitely made the conditions a little interesting,” she said. “It definitely made technique stuff a little more complicated; but it was super-fun racing, super competitive day.”

Spectator Guidelines

Spectators we encourage you to come out to support skiers in the 2022 Sun Valley Super Tour.  The 2022 Sun Valley Super Tour involves three days of racing and will feature some of the best skiers in North America in addition to many of our local and intermountain juniors.  We love spectators and we are grateful for your support and encouragement of the athletes. This section sets out the guidelines for spectators and some pro tips for best strategies to watch the races.  The event web site includes a detailed schedule of events course maps and start lists for each day to help you plan your spectating strategy.  In addition, there is also a spectator access map to help you navigate to prime viewing areas.

Guidelines:

  • All parking is off site and involves a shuttle. The parking and shuttle plans are explained on the event website.  Pro Tip:  Allow extra time to account for parking and shuttle. It takes about 10 min to walk from the Lake Creek parking lot to the start and finish area.
  • Spectators are not allowed to spectate on skis but must walk to all viewing areas.  Pro Tip:  Don’t bring skis to spectate–they only get in the way.
  • Spectators are permitted to walk on the side of the trails to spectate but must keep well out of the way of skiers and avoid impacting the groomed part of the trail.Pro tip: Pay attention!!
  • There are two important exceptions to spectator access:  No spectators are allowed on the section of trail from Torin’s downhill to the finish and no spectators are allowed on the downhill section of Hammer. Both these fast downhills will be clearly marked and fenced off.
  • There will be course control volunteers on course.  They are there to help ensure the safety of both spectators and skiers. Please thank them and follow all their instructions for spectating.
  • There are a number of spectator control gates with course control monitors–please follow their instructions for crossing.
  • There will be fencing at the bottom of Hammer and spectators are required to stay behind the fence.
  • In the stadium there are sections reserved for competitors, coaches and race officials only.  Please respect these areas.
  • No pets please.

Spectating Suggestions:

  • Start lists are posted online no later than the night before the race.  If you are interested in following a specific racer the start list will tell you exactly when that racer will start.  Pro Tip: Download the start list then you have a list of which bib number each skier has and you can cheer for all the racers.
  • Spectators are allowed to walk on the side of trails to spectate ( with two exceptions) but there are also suggested access routes for spectators.  These are marked with blue signs denoting spectator access routes. The spectator access map below details suggested routes.
  • Bottom of Hammer:  From here you can see most of the course.  Racers will pass by three times per loop and one can see both the start and finish from here.  This is a good place to watch skiers ski one of the most challenging downhills on the course.
  • Coaches Climb.  From here you can see most of the course. It is also a prime location if you like to see skiers suffering.  Coaches climb is also where skiers often will make their move–especially on sprint day. (Sat)
  • Pro Tip:  You will often see coaches strategically placed on the course providing racers with information, replacing broken poles, providing feeds (water) and encouragement etc.  While it is really interesting to watch and listen to how they support their athletes, please give them the space they need to do their jobs.
  • Bottom of Torin’s:  If we are using Torin’s for the mass start race on Thursday or the distance skate on Sunday this is a good place to see skiers navigate the fastest downhill of the day.  Please remember to stay behind the fencing and that  Torin’s and the downhill section below it is closed to spectators.
  • Thursday mass start classic.  Mass starts are really exciting to watch–be sure to be there for the start at 10am.
  • Saturday sprint day:  Racers ski a qualifier in the morning and the top 30 skiers qualify to ski in 6 racer heats in the afternoon. Best spectating is to plan to spectate for the heats.  Head to head racing is exciting to watch.  Heats start at noon.

‘It feels historic’: U.S. Cross Country Ski Team enters Tour de Ski in unprecedented territory

cross country super tour

As they took the course Saturday for the first leg of the Tour de Ski in Toblach, Italy, the U.S. Cross Country Ski Team was in rarefied territory.

The U.S. women’s team entered with Jessie Diggins leading the World Cup points race and teammate and Alaskan Rosie Brennan close by in third. While Diggins won the overall in 2021, the U.S. has used a depth of talent to find success that may be unparalleled for the Americans in four decades of World Cup racing.

“It feels historic for sure,” said former U.S. Ski Team member and Olympian Holly Brooks, who has followed the early season action from her home in Anchorage. “To have the depth and to have two of the top three skiers being in contention is really extraordinary.”

The men’s team hasn’t produced eye-popping results, but they too have been on the rise. Packed with a young nucleus of skiers including multiple Alaskans, the U.S. men have also achieved some momentous finishes.

In email exchanges with ADN, members of the U.S. Ski Team described what led to their unprecedented early season success and what their expectations are for the remainder of the season.

Brennan and Diggins both believe the success of Team USA’s skiers is a continuation of a slow ascent and not a quick, unexpected leap.

“We’ve had a lot of people just putting in the work consistently, year after year,” Diggins said. “That really starts to build over time. So many members of this team, we’ve got this awesome depth. All of that work is coming up to the surface.”

Since arriving in Alaska in 2011, Brennan said, she’s maintained a very consistent training routine, currently working with Erik Flora and the APU Elite Team. She said illness kept her from reaching her potential last year in the season’s first period, and the success of the team now is giving her season even more visibility.

“I wish I could say there was one magic thing I did that changed everything, but that’s not the reality of ski racing or many pursuits,” she said. “It’s been many years of small improvements and lots of work that add up to good things. ... The overall success of the team seems to have simply drawn more attention so people are actually noticing.”

Brooks said in conversations she’s had with former U.S. Ski Team members like Alaskans Kikkan Randall and Sadie Bjornsen Maubet, and chatting with local skiers on the Hillside and at Kincaid Park in Anchorage, the enthusiasm level is high.

“People are just so engaged,” she said. “It’s fun to have a horse in the race. I mean, it really wasn’t that long ago where top 30s were celebrated. And now I feel like, every weekend in period one, we had someone, if not multiple people, on the podium.”

While Brennan, 35, and Diggins, 32, have been stalwarts, there’s also an influx of young skiers. At 22, Novie McCabe already has a stellar resume. McCabe, from Winthrop, Washington, won three national titles at the University of Utah and was a 2022 Winter Olympian. She joined the APU team this year and has high aspirations after finishing seventh last season in the Tour’s final stage.

“I think that the key for me this year will be treating each day as a new opportunity and not dwelling on the day before too much,” she said.

Julia Kern, Sophia Laukli and 18-year-old Sammy Smith round out the women’s roster for the Tour. Smith is coming off an impressive performance at the Winterstart Super Tour in Anchorage.

Brennan said the team has an excellent blend of youth and experience.

“We have a really young team now, which often means a lull in results as some athletes move on and the young ones get their feet under them,” Brennan said. “This crew has now had a few World Cup seasons together and things are clicking, so we are seeing great results all around.”

cross country super tour

Perhaps the most surprising result of the U.S. Ski Team’s World Cup season to date came from J.C. Schoonmaker. A former UAA skier and current APU athlete, Schoonmaker finished on the podium in a sprint race in early December in Östersund, Sweden. He was followed closely by teammate Ben Ogden, marking career bests for both as well as the first time the U.S. had two men racing in a sprint final.

Ogden, 23, has been a stalwart of the team in recent years. Alaskans Schoonmaker, Gus Schumacher and Zanden McMullen give the Americans three more skiers on the Tour de Ski team who are 23 or younger. Another 23-year-old Alaskan, Luke Jager, raced for the Americans in the World Cup season’s first period but isn’t competing in the Tour.

“They’re all around the same age,” Brooks said. “They’re really some of each other’s best friends, so I think it feels like less of a sacrifice to put so much time and energy into it. They are competitive with each other but in a really healthy way. And so I think they push each other and, you know, that success breeds success. I think a lot about kind of the contagion effect of confidence.”

Ogden had a breakthrough moment of his own Saturday, finishing third in the Tour skate sprint race for his first career podium. That finish combined with Schoonmaker’s run in Östersund marked the first time in 40 years that two American men earned World Cup podium finishes in one season, according to U.S. Ski and Snowboard. The last time that occurred was in 1983, with Tim Caldwell and Bill Koch finishing on the podium in Anchorage. Ogden’s podium finish was the 10th overall for Team USA in the 2023-24 season.

Brooks, who spent five seasons on the World Cup tour a little over a decade ago, said racing predominantly in Europe takes some getting used to for young skiers.

“Skiers are packing their bags in November and they’re not coming home for the most part until March, so you’re living out of a suitcase for five months a year,” she said.

With experience and success, the younger Americans are starting to find their comfort level.

“I think for some of the younger people on our team, we’ve just gotten more adapted and adjusted to this World Cup lifestyle, so we show up to the races knowing we belong there,” Schoonmaker said.

That sense of belonging and success has translated into confidence. For Ogden, gaining confidence to compete at the World Cup level has been a process. Last year he earned the U23 green bib, putting him among the best in the world at his age.

“The biggest thing that comes from successful early season races is confidence,” Ogden said. “Confidence in our ability to ski with the top dogs here on the World Cup and confidence that we can compete multiple times back-to-back. After a few good races in period one, I am personally feeling excited for the coming races.”

An APU athlete, Schumacher has been consistent this season, a regular top-25 finisher in distance races. On Saturday, he finished 18th in the skate sprint, the highest such finish of his career.

“It’s been really fun on this team this year,” Schumacher said. “Especially on the men’s side, it feels like we all ride the wave together, so that’s been a fun boat to be aboard.”

Despite making his first start on the Tour races, McMullen is eyeing some top-20 finishes after a strong first period.

“It’s easy to find that confidence when I’ve been training with such a strong team all year,” he said. “Being able to believe in my training and race as hard as I can has proven to be a great formula.”

The men’s team for the Tour de Ski also includes Kevin Bolger and another APU athlete, Scott Patterson.

World Cup races in the United States are rare, with only one in the past 34 years. A race scheduled for Minneapolis in 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the World Cup is returning to race in Minnesota this season. The races at Wirth Park in Minneapolis in mid-February should only help to continue the American ascent in cross-country skiing.

The races will be especially poignant for Diggins, a native of St. Paul, Minnesota.

“I’m so excited,” Diggins said. “It’s been so cool to see how excited everybody is about it. It’s so cool that we’re rallying around this as a country and seeing this excitement grow. I’m hearing from clubs that are road-tripping out there and people that are making plans and making this part of their winter vacation. That’s so cool and exciting.”

The U.S. team continues to race in Toblach on Sunday, in the 10K classic for the second stage of the Tour.

Adaptive categories:

1. Sit skier

2. Standing adaptive skier

3. Visually impaired (VI) skier

There is the option to specify the classification of the adaptive skier in the chosen category based on the International Paralympic Committee’s Paralympic classification system and time factors. Choosing the class will allow the athlete to receive a time factor on their final result time..

All standing and visually impaired skiers will be fully integrated into the main race field with non-adaptive athletes. Visually impaired athletes are allowed to ski with a guide in front of them and have the option of using a voice amplifier. Standing and VI athletes will be seeded based on FIS/U.S. Ski & Snowboard and/or Regional Ranking list. If the athlete does not yet have points, they will start at or near the back of the field. Sit skiers will compete on a course designed specifically for them and start at their own specified time.

Results and awards will be provided for skiers in the three adaptive categories, separated into male and female divisions. In addition, standing and VI athlete results will also be integrated into the overall results.

Space will be available for teams to set up tents, small trucks, or trailers as needed (within space limitations). Teams must supply their own tables, extensions cords, and any other needed supplies. Adequate electricity for waxing will be available in this area. Portable heaters (supplied by teams) may be used in trailers, but use may be limited by the Loppet based on total power needs and capacity. North Parking Lot space will be available by advanced reservation only. See registration information below.

On-Snow Outdoor Wax Stations

We will again have outdoor space available on the south and west sides of the start/finish stadium. Space will be available for teams to set up tents as desired. Electrical service will be provided for up to 10 stations on a first come, first served basis. Teams must supply their own tables, tents, extension cords and any other needed supplies. If you plan to set up on the snow in the stadium, please register as noted below.

Branded Tents and Feather Flags

Ski teams are welcome to have branded tents and flags at their assigned waxing stations as part of their complimentary waxing space.

Ski race suppliers, ski shops, and waxing support services are welcome to have branded tents and flags at their assigned waxing stations as part of their Loppet sponsorship. Please contact Abby Delaney [email protected] regarding your sponsorship.

Ski race suppliers, ski shops, and waxing support services choosing not to be sponsors are welcome to assigned waxing space at no charge. We respectfully request you do not display branded tent or flags. Thank you for your cooperation.

Register for Wax Station Space by February 1

To allow us to prepare and plan for an orderly and efficient athlete village layout, it is imperative that each team, business, or organization who will need space register at the following link. Please register for waxing space as soon as possible, but no later than February 1, 2023.

Click Here to register your team/business/organization for waxing space.

A Recent Review of this tour

A wonderful way to explore a historic town near Moscow and get in some Nordic skiing. I enjoyed both skate and classic at Dimitrov winter sports center, just 10 mins from town center. Irina is fabulous--friendly, knowledgeable, super organized and flexible (eg adopting to your interests, how much you want to ski, etc.) To top it off, she hails from Dimitrov, so there's no better guide to this place! Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
