Solved flashing cruise control light

  • Add to quote

This is a complicated problem to diagnose. I followed the troubleshooting charts, which indicated a change in the ASCD control unit. Guess what? That didn't fix it. After a lot of time analyzing each input to the ASCD control unit, I found that the voltage to terminal 5 was lower than the battery voltage. This voltage is fed to terminal 5 through the ASCD cancel switch in front of the bake pedal. A resistance check showed a high resistance contact with resistance readings anywhere from 7 ohms to 20 ohms - very intermittent. I changed the cancel switch, and it works great! Changing this switch is somewhat of a challenge because you have to remove or at least unbolt the brake pedal assembly to gain access to the button - really, not too bad once you realize that is what is required. I suspect most owners with a flashing cruise light have a defective ASCD cancel switch.

yes very good diagnostic i hope this is the same i have ocasanaly

Yes I agree, good diagnostic Dave333. I have been trying to figure out my cruise problem and it's got me. . . 92 King cab V6, cruise cont will light when switch on, but can't set at any speed. It will work once in a blue moon but for only about 3-4 minutes then it cuts out. I changed the brake cancel switch, swapped relays and it still isn't working. When the main switch it turned on I can hear the contactor. I have downloaded the service manual for a 94 Pathfinder and the wiring colors and harness connector positions are slightly different so it's hard to tell. Anybody have any ideas? or the service manual for a 92? I have been trying to buy one but can't seem to find one thorough enough. Thanks

chek the vacume line, it might be ahngin off, or only on a little bit that was once my problem, your lines should be located, along with your pump, on the firwawll on the driverside aria, you may just need to jam it back in

My bad. I missed that one. Sorry about that.

Thanks for this post, which is still relevant. Cruise was flashing on my 2017 Versa SV. Replace the stoplight switch first, with no resolution, but I ordered an ASCD Cancel Switch from Amazon for $15 and that fixed it. Thanks dave3333! P.S. the part was difficult to determine, so for anyone with that same model, 2300-3RA0A worked for me.

Why Is My Cruise Control Light Blinking?

By: Author Zach Reed

Why Is My Cruise Control Light Blinking?

Seeing the light on your dashboard start to blink is always concerning, especially if you don’t know what it means.

If you see your cruise control light blinking on your dashboard, you’ll probably start to worry about what it means and what you’ll have to do to get it fixed.

Heck, what does it even mean when your cruise control light is on but not flashing? Does that just mean that the system is working properly, or does that mean it’s faulty?

If your cruise control light is blinking, this typically means that something is faulty within the system and could mean that the cruise control itself might need to be repaired.

More often than not, this is usually to do with the electronics, such as a speed sensor. If you have a faulty system, you should refrain from using cruise control until it’s fixed.

Today, we’re going to talk about what the cruise control light looks like on most cars, and what it means when it starts blinking.

We’ll also discuss what to do if the light is on but not blinking, and whether or not you can safely drive your car in that state.

Our main goal with this site is to provide you and the rest of our readers with exactly what they’re looking for.

This way, you don’t have to waste your time perusing the web, comparing sources to one another, and trying to figure out what’s right and what’s wrong.

We’ve done the legwork for you, so all you have to do is come here and you’re good to go!

What Does the Cruise Control Light Look Like?

Before we go through this entire article talking about the cruise control light in your car, let’s make sure you know what the cruise control light actually looks like.

After all, there are all sorts of lights on your dashboard, and seeing any one of them turn on unexpectedly can be a bit confusing. So knowing what certain ones look like will help you figure out what’s going on more quickly.

The cruise control light usually looks like a miniature speedometer with the analog indicator set in place, indicating that the speed of your car is set as well.

This light is usually found on the lower right side of your dashboard, near where the speedometer and odometer are. If you can’t find it there, it might be located on the steering column.

It’s important to know where this light is so that if it does turn on while you’re driving, you’re not scrambling to figure out where it is and what it means.

Now that we know what the cruise control light looks like, let’s talk about what it means when it starts blinking.

Blinking cruise control

What Does it Mean if Your Cruise Control Light is Blinking?

There are a few different things that could be going on if you see the cruise control light blinking while you’re driving. The first thing you should do is check to see if your cruise control is working at all.

A general rule of thumb about most lights on your dash is that if they’re flashing, it usually means that something is faulty with that particular system and it’s not working as it’s expected to .

To check to see if cruise control is working, you can simply try to engage it. If the light is blinking, that’s usually an indication that the system is turned on but not working properly.

This could be for a number of reasons, such as a problem with the speed sensor or cruise control servo. In most cases, you’ll need to take your car to a mechanic to get it checked out and repaired.

Why is My Cruise Control Light On But Not Blinking?

The vast majority of the time, if you see a light illuminated on your dashboard, it typically means that there’s an issue of some sort going on.

But cruise control is one of the few exceptions to this rule. When you see your cruise control light illuminated on your dash, that’s actually a good sign. It’s exactly what you want to see!

If the light is on but not blinking, that usually means that cruise control is engaged and working properly. This should be easy to verify since you’ll be able to feel the car maintaining its speed without you having to do anything.

The light being on is simply there to let you know that the system is engaged and working.

It’s important to note that even if the light is on and cruise control is working, you might still have some issues with the system.

For example, you might notice that your car is having trouble maintaining speed on hills or in stop-and-go traffic.

If this is happening, it’s usually an indication that your cruise control system needs to be adjusted. But as long as the light is on, you know that the system is engaged and working.

Can You Drive Your Car With a Faulty Cruise Control System?

If you’re driving and you see the cruise control light start blinking, the best thing to do is to disengage cruise control and drive without it until you can get your car into a mechanic.

In most cases, it’s not safe to continue driving using cruise control if you know that the system is having issues or that something is faulty within the sensors and electronics of the system.

The reason for this is that cruise control relies on sensors to help maintain speed.

If something is wrong with the sensor or the system itself, your car might not be able to properly gauge its speed.

This could lead to you unintentionally speeding or, even worse, not being able to slow down in time if someone cuts you off or if there’s an obstacle in the road.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your car. So if you see the cruise control light blinking, make sure to disengage the system and drive without it until you can get your car into a mechanic.

Summing Up Why Your Cruise Control Light is Blinking

If your cruise control light is not only on, but blinking, it usually indicates that there is something wrong with the device itself.

It’s important to stop using cruise control as soon as you see the light blinking and take it into a mechanic to get it fixed. Otherwise, it could lead to accidents if you’re not able to stop in time.

Blinking cruise control lights aren’t generally too much cause for concern, but be diligent about any light that starts blinking on your dashboard!

You learn something new everyday. You might want to check your coolant level.

zebelkhan

So when my coolant temp gauge was sky high last summer but my cruise control light was not flashing, does that mean my gauge was wrong?

Corin said: WTF? Leave it to Nissan to figure out that warning. "Hmmmm.... What can we do to alert the driver if the temperature is too high?" "Well, we could just flash the cruise control set light..." "Hey, that makes sense! Yeah, let's do that! That should be obvious to EVERYONE!" Click to expand...

I believe it was a fast blink. We'll see if it continues. Is the ASCD part of the ECU? I'm having difficulty finding a good picture of its location. It looks to me like the ASCD system consists of the ECU (brains), steering wheel switches, brake switch, and a speed monitor. So if something were wrong with the system, it could be any one of the switches or the ECU itself.

Eclipse1825

I had this same problem and I replaced the controls on the steering wheel and it corrected the problem and it only took about 30 min to do.

I have the same problem on my 2005 Murano. I noticed that most the time when I turn on my cruise control "SET" is blinking. I am going to try and replace the cruise control switch. Eclipse1825, you mentioned it took about 30 minutes, do you have any pictures or information on this process? Thanks!

amindu

I know this is an old thread but i am having this issue on my 06, i know its not the coolant temp since the gauge is at normal and im only driving 15 miles at 60mph on my commute home, plus its a fast blinking of the SET light so its something to do with the Cruise control system....does anyone have any additional insight, i have an extended warranty through Nissan and searched for ASCD and all the components seem to be covered i just dont know if it means it will cover the steering controls or just the main system Thanks

Last time this happened to me I was getting onto the highway and was already cruising at 70MPH. I usually get up to speed then set my cruise control on my MO. When I turned on the cruise control, I noticed the SET light flashing. So...I flipped the CVT into neutral, shut down the engine, waited about 3 seconds, turned on the motor, then engaged the CVT into drive. After that I did not have any issues to date. I did notice that it seemed like a momentary failure; i.e. would go away if I turned off and restarted the engine. It only happened to me a few times and I haven't seen it since. I'm thinking the ECM got into a funky state or something and threw the flashing SET light. Other than that...I have absolutely no clue what causes it.

Another possible fix for flashing "set" light... While out for a drive yesterday, I noticed that after one of my stops (cruise control had been working normally to that point) that I was getting the "quick" flashing of the cruise control "set" light on my '07 Murano when I tried to activate cruise. Restarting the engine at the next couple of stops didn't clear the problem, so I drove home and figured I'd take it to the dealer (I have the Nissan Gold extended warranty). But, after reading the posts here and inspecting for any debris or other obvious problems under the vehicle, I figured I'd try one more thing first. I disconnected the negative battery terminal for maybe 60 seconds, then reconnected. After resetting my radio stations and other preferences that were lost, I took a little drive and the cruise was working just fine. I'll have to keep my eyes open for any further problems... but it might be that the electronics just got a bit stupid and needed a "reboot". Dan

I know this is an old thread, however it's a new problem for my 07 Murano. I tried Good ol Dan reboot to no success. I have no MIL light but still checked for any codes and came up empty. I found that the blinking SET light occurs after application of the brake pedal. I have operated the cruise using the speed control switches on the right side of the steering wheel. I have been able to set the cruise speed, cancel the cruise and re-establish a new speed with those controls. I'm able to accelerate the speed using the Accel switch, I can shutoff the cruise turn it back on and set a new speed without any disruption or blinking SET light. The only time I seem to get the blinking SET light is after stepping on the brake and trying to resume my selected speed with the Resume switch or the SET switch. OBD II Code P1564 calls out the ASCD Steering Switch, however I don't have a MIL light illuminated. If anyone has an update or solution for this problem I welcome your response. Thanks in advance.

Fixed. Removed and replaced the clock spring, aka spiral cable.

Nuetralman

Say what? You replaced what. I have this same intermittent problem...

Flashing cruise "set" light

handb94

  • Add to quote

Driving home from work today and I noticed the set light for the cruise control flashing for about 15 seconds at a time. Cruise control is also disabled. I was reading that inactive cruise control can mean a blown fuse on another circuit, but no one mentioned the light flashing. I have to try and find some time tomorrow to look into it. Has anyone had it flash before. Thanks in advance.

Clint

I don't think it's user serviceable and needs to be taken in to the dealership. I believe the ECM controls the cruise control. Clint

Well damn. I can get a discount on parts from the dealer but I can't download software. I guess I will be making a phone call tomorrow.

Flashing set light means that the speed control is in fail safe mode. Fail safe is entered when a malfunction is detected. One of the first things to look at is the VSS. Does the speedometer work OK? Also try pressing the brake pedal a few times to see if there is a problem with the cancel switch on the pedal mechanisim. Maybe look up under the dash for the switch and see if anything abnormal is noticable. The switches on the steering wheel can sometimes stick. Actuate them a few times and turn the wheel back and forth a few times. Take a look at fuse #5 (10A). Make sure it is good.

How do I know which fuse is #5?

Speedo works fine. The buttons aren't stuck. I have to check the fuse. I remember one of the techs telling me about a bushing on the switch by the brake pedal that deteriorates and falls out. That might be it. I will have to check.

houdini

check and make sure the connector for the cruise control module (under the hood) is plugged up tight. mine wiggled loose one time and i got the same light. fixed after i tightened the connector on the module.

Wheelie

mine is flashing, did you get yours to work? wee

No, but what I did find is that the light only flashes when the headlights are on. The cruise wont engage. If the lights are off it works fine. When the cruise is on and you use the turn signals it will cancell the set speed. That leads me to believe that there is a short in the light switch.

Hate to revive an ancient thread but I'm having the same issue @handb94 described. My cruise works fine during the day, the brake pedal cutoff and brake light switch and buttons work. At night with the lights on and speeds over 30 mph the set light flashes and wont engage. With the cruise set, turn the lights on and the cruise disengages, I didn't test the signal lights though. I installed aftermarket fogs a few months ago but it hasn't flashed until last night and disconnecting the fog wiring didn't help. Has anyone confirmed if this was a short in the light switch/signal stalk? Wanted to ask before I throw money at it.

I have no brake lights, switched the relays around and pulled out a few fuses to check and the set light went off, still no brake lights, there is no brake light fuse where it says there should be, no fuse holder wee

I would check the brake light switch by the pedal.

Mine honestly just fixed itself. I would make sure the switch is good. You can use an ohmeter for that and make sure the bushings are good on the brake pedal that the switch contacts. Other than that you would need a scan tool that can read the codes for the cruise module.

2013Pro4X

I think I recall a truck going into limp mode somewhere on this forum, with the lights on because of a shorted taillight/brake-light bulb or socket. That caused the ECU to believe the brakes were depressed "limping" the truck. It sounds like when you turn your lights on, the computer believes the brakes are depressed and cuts the cruise. Again, just a guess from previous reading but maybe something else to check/test.

I guess that's something to check but if the brake light switch is separate from the cruise cutoff switch on the pedal I would think the feedback from a brake light problem would be on a different circuit. All the lights, signal and brakes, function properly. One weird thing I noticed is when i press the brake when the door is open (in the drive, engine not running), the reminder chime for headlights or keys in ignition goes off.

Dapostrophus

Just had this happen in the parking lot leaving work. I did not attempt to engage cruise, just turned on the main as I was pulling out and buried the SET light continually flashing. Tried all cruise buttons, brake, park, and burning changed. Turned the truck off and started it back up, and the cruise is working normally again (with headlights on). Not sure if this is the same problem, since I didn't try to actually set the cruise. I'll definitely be on the lookout for it to reoccur.

Frontier.Steve

When I turn my headlights on, SET flashes on my dash. I broke my clock spring while lifting my truck years ago. I replaced it with an ebay clockspring and this is what I got. At least it turned off my airbag light!!

Clock spring?

Good information! Thanks for the reply. It has done it maybe 5 times now in 2 years, and it's very inconsistent and always fixed immediately by turning the truck off and back on.. If it ever does get to be a real problem, that's the first place I'll look. Also, did not know there was a Suzuki version of the Frontier.

Well, my truck is at 196k, so it's a good possibility it is the same issue. A good place to start anyway. Thanks for the info.

Cruise "SET" light flashing

Anybody know what would cause the cruise "SET" light to start flashing while driving? I was not using cruise, just rolling through town @ 35mph. Its an 04 and I have used cruise control less than a dozen times. Had to reset the ECU, have not seen the light since.

mine started blinking and it turned out to be a blown fuse

I checked both fuses, and even though they looked good, I still changed them. I dunno about a button being stuck. The external piece of the button is fine. Are you talking about an internal part?

Glad to see I'm not the only one having trouble with the cruise control. Highly intermittant, but would typically quit on the 200 mile trip to the cabin. Usually once on the way there and once way home. Could not resume or set new speed when it happened Turning off/on with steering wheel control would allow me to use cruise control again. LAST weekend the SET light flashed when it failed... new symptom. Could NOT correct by turning off / on at steering wheel. Cruise was a vegetable until I turned off engine and restarted. About 10 miles down the road I noticed the SES light was on. Suspect it came on as soon as I started it up again. Took to dealer and they ordered new switch. Didn't say what switch, but the paperwork says : " P1564 ASCD Light. Light cleared & parts ordered. ASCD switch internal failure " I will update next week after they finish the job. This is warrantee work on my 2005.

Same thing happened to mine last night, was quoted at $450+ to replace? That included the $150 diagnostic charge. It is crazy was dealers charge... not more dealers for me.

Neverlate, it would be really helpful if you could ask them what they installed and fixed in layman terms. From some other threads it seems like the ASCD switch is the little switch under the steering wheel that tells whether the brake pedal is depressed or not.

I finally got this fixed on mine, they tried to replace the ASCD switch at first as that is what the nissan program (don't know what its called, swift or something like that). Anyways the problem never went away and then I took it back and they replaced the switches on the steering wheel and it has been fine since. I had the same flashing SET light problem off and on over the years usually only when doing long periods of highway driving but it got worse and finally just never worked. Have not had a problem in over 2 weeks since I got it fixed and have used it quite a bit.

STNJohnson, I got mine back from the dealer and Bighitter nailed it already in the last post. They replaced the whole 3 switch assembly on the sterring wheel rH side. The invoice states the part number is 25551-7S110 'switch assembly.' Wish I could tell you how much it cost, but I'm still warrantee, so the invoice says N/C. Encouraged to hear it fixed it for Bighitter, since I won't know untill my next long drive to the cabin (usually failed once or twice on the 3 hour trip). Good luck !

Thanks guys, since I'm not under warranty that will narrow it down and hopefully keep the cost reasonable.

The steering wheel cc switch is about $70 from Courtesy Parts .

My CC blinks, first time I've ever tried to use it (great). I called the dealership and they said that they'll have to check to see if I'm under warranty. Reason being, my 05 has 45000, so the "fix" might fall under the 36k warranty or the 60k. Sweet......... Damn used trucks, my passenger heated seat doesn't get very hot and now the CC.

I've checked the fuses and they're fine. I replaced the cruise cancel switch on the brake pedal to no avail. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Count me as another with the same problem. Started on a trip from Nashville to Cincinnati last Fall. Blinked for awhile, worked for awhile, quit working altogether. My long trips stopped a couple weeks later so I forgot about it. Now I'm getting ready for the longest trip ever in the truck (Nashville to Cape Hatteras), so wanted to get it fixed. After reading this thread, I went out and checked the fuses. Fuses look fine. Started the truck and tried to turn on the cruise. It blinked. Turned off the truck and restarted. Cruise light came on like it's supposed to. Still under warranty (purchased 8/06) may get it 'fixed' anyway, even if it doesn't seem to be broken at this moment. Dead

Has anyone tried putting a set of the new lighted swiches from 08 in place of the non-lit ones from 04-06 or 07? My second set to switches are now failing and I am out of warrenty.

Not sure why it would flash when CC wasn't engaged unless you bumped the swith without realizing it. Regardless, I'd bet $$ it's a bad switch like mine was. It was replaced free under warranty, but mine's an '06. Your '04 may be out of warranty for this item. Jim

My 06 is doing the same thing. I have to press on the plastic housing that surrounds the cruise control switches in order for it to come on but when it does "Set" just blinks but won't work.

deerslayer

Add me to the list....set just flashes. It will do it for couple days & then work.

Anybody got insight on how to get the plastic covers off?

Just finished replacing the "clock spring" in my 2007 Titan, to cure the "flashing" "set" light. I had searched the forums on here and did not find anything that emulated "exactly" my problem, the code was indicating the switches on the steering wheel, so that was the first thing replaced, did not fix the problem, in fact got slightly worse in that the cruise light would not come on unless the steering wheel was turned slightly either direction and even then I could not turn it off unless the wheel was turned. I ordered the "clock spring" from my dealer, which came as a complete assembly, turn signals and wiper switches, took me about an hour and 1/2 to install the new components, and test drove the truck, cruise works fine as well as everything else in the assembly. I did find a thread on here involving installing audio switches that was a great assist in the beginning. I think that the reason for the switch code initially was due to the open wiring in the clock spring, and the ultimate clue was having to turn the wheel to turn on cruise. It was an expensive operation, but as I did it myself, did save the labor costs, and the dealer did give me about a 50% discount on the assembly, and I do have my cruise back.

Cruise Control SET light blinking

  • Add to quote

I ran into something weird the other day while on a road trip. I had my cruise control set at 70mph and it disengaged all of a sudden. I thought maybe i hit the button by mistake so I reengaged it. A short while after it disengaged again and this time the SET light was blinking and I couldn't reengage it. After shutting off the truck it would work for a really short while ( approx 2 mins ) and then the blinking SET light. I read in the manual it would blink if the system picks up a malfunction any idea what could be wrong? I also get the infamous VDC light on occasions problem too. Not sure if that matters. Any help would be appreciated 2007 Xterra 2X4 Automatic 45,000 No Mods

What kinda road conditions are we talking? I believe cruise will be disengaged if there's any wheel slippage.

I was on flat roads. And dry conditions

Shiny

Sounds like the second "condition" applies in your case. This is from the service manual. I'll look for more information... When the ECM detects any of the following conditions, the ECM will cancel the cruise operation and inform the driver by blinking indicator lamp. o Engine coolant temperature is slightly higher than the normal operating temperature, CRUISE lamp may blink slowly. When the engine coolant temperature decreases to the normal operating temperature, CRUISE lamp will stop blinking and the cruise operation will be able to work by depressing SET/COAST switch or RESUME/ACCELERATE switch. o Malfunction for some self-diagnoses regarding ASCD control: SET lamp will blink quickly.

Hmmm... If I understand the manual correctly, there are six components (switches, actuator, and indicator) that can cause the SET light to blink if a malfunction is detected in any one of them. I vote for taking the X to a mechanic.

i just had this problem. i replaced the switches in the steering wheel and it still isnt working. i guess i will take it to the nissan place one day this week. i know, revival lol

macguyvermedic

Had the same problem with the our Audi and it is the ABS sensor or worst case scenario the ABS Module which it turned out to be for me. I think Nissan has a recall on our ECM not sure if that is tied into the ABS Module or not. SS were loosing cruise randomly with VDC light on and off randomly.

thanks man. it looks like the cruise is tied into the ecm. im thinking i should get the ecm recall done and see if that fixes it first.

that recall only covers up to 2006 models. hopefully that isnt what it is or i am screwed. ill just have to hope for a bad switch or something i guess.

I think somebody is selling 2 front ABS and 1 rear sensor in the for sale thread. I that ends up being the problem you can save yourself quiet a bit with the prices he is asking. Keep us updated on the status and best of luck.

SuperBlackX

this happened to mine once awhile back, went to use the cruise and it would not engage the set light kept blinking. not sure what the problem is haven't had it happen again.

arcticd00d

I had the same problem on a log road trip a year ago... the only unusual conditions I can think of was rain. It was very cool out too, so I don't think anything was overheating. When I got home, I played with all the grounds under the hood, and I haven't had a problem since. Of course, my fiddling and the failure of the problem to return aren't necessarily related.

the nissan place is going to look at it tomorrow. i had to call and give an ass chewing because the tech didnt balance my tires or fix the tpms light the last time i was in there. i called them this morning and asked them if they were competent. the service manager promised that he would fix it and he would also have some words with the tech. they get their last chance tomorrow, after that its going to be corporates problem.

Xterra1102

My 07 SE did this one day back when I first got the truck...I was going to take it in but then it randomly started working again the next day and worked ever since. :dontknow: Damn electrical gremlins.....

Randwulf

The only time I've had cruise control drop out is if I hydroplane at all. It happened this morning in fact.

terrible experience at the dealership this morning. i had to file a report with nissan usa. hopefully they will take care of it.

MadMax8

What went down?

The service manager and mechanics both failed to listen to what I had to say. They spent the whole day working on my truck and were able to tell me nothing at the end of the day but still charged me. It will be an interesting day for the service dep't tomorrow. Nissan usa and the general manager of the dealer both know of their behavior now. Posted via Mobile Device

Cruise control "SET" light blinking

  • Add to quote

So i was coming home from job yesterday and looked down at the dash and my SET light for the cruise control was blinking. I didn't have on cruise control and when i got home shut to car off and started it back up and it wasn't blinking anymore. Any suggestions? Should i worry about? Thanks, Brian

MichaelS75

Mine has been doing that for about a week now. Ever since I sunk the X in a mudhole its been blinking intermittently. My guess would be that it has something to do with moisture getting into a sensor but I haven't really investigated the problem any further. The only bad thing about it is you won't have cruise control

Cruise control malfunction

  • Add to quote

I have read the various threads on the rapid blinking "set" button on the cruise control. It seems the cruise control switch is the culprit on most of these. I went ahead and replaced the switch, but once I started down the road, the "set" light started blinking again. The cruise initially set, but after about 30 seconds, it kicked off and started blinking. What other problems could I delve into before I take the plunge and get raped by the dealership?

Same Problem 2005 Armada I have a 2005 Nissan Armada with the same Cruise control problem. When I try to engage the cruise control, the set blinks on and off very fast. I hope someone has seen this before and has a fix. If I find something I will let you know.

I've yet to use my cc........ i probably should while the Mada is still under warranty

BlakSpyda

gbertsch01 , I have found out that using the CC is the key for improving mileage (for me at least). In long trips I have been getting better that 17 mpg while using the CC.

Update: Still have the cruise problem and I am sure it is wheels speed related. I can set the cruise and everything works great until I reach 45 MPH. At that point, the ECM shuts it down and I get that rapid blinking "set" light. Wondering if I have a bad speed sensor on one of the wheels?

Rumplecat

I had this problem and I had to replace the controls, but it may be something different.

My was diagnosed by the dealership for 119 bucks. Turns out it is going to cost me 2,700 bucks to fix. They said that the ABS control module wen south so I am getting 2 different speed readings to the ecm. the one from the tranny is correct, but the one from the ABS, which takes its reading from wheel speed sensors is outta whack. The ABS control module is $1000 plus labor. On top of that, they said that the incorrect reading from the ABS fried a circuit on the odometer cluster, so i have to have a new cluster installed. The total bill with labor came to 2,700, so I told them to get $%#. Anyhow, I think my problem is not common, for most people, it seems the problem lies with the cruise switches on the steering wheel which cost about 80 bucks to replace or there is a switch on the brake pedal which disengages the cruise which seems to go bad. Either on i think can be diagnosed by pulling the codes from the ECM. Someone on here might have the link on how to pull codes by your self. It involves turning the key to the on position and then off several times and then counting the blinks on the Service engine light. One thing you might be able to try that might put you in the same boat I am, is to set the cruise at about 30 MPH. Mine set at that speed, but once you got up to about 45, the difference in readings bvetween the tranny sensor and the ABS sensor were to great and it shut the cruise down. Good Luck

Redus....I wish i could set the CC with the blinking lights. so many floating answers, and wish someone had a direct fix.....guess thats what to be expected. Checked brake plunger switches and they work ok, so am guessing the steering wheel panel is bad.....donno!!!! Anyone else for a chime??

same problem here. I hope somebody has the answer.

My wife was on her way back from a shopping trip a week ago and called me saying that the Cruise Control shut off and the set light started blinking and from that point on it would no longer work. My Mada should be in the last few months of warranty, so from what the rest of you have posted I guess I better go get it fixed right away.

scr38

Probably a bad wheel speed sensor.

Guys, My case as follows: 1) Tried to turn on Cruise it start to flash and refused to work 2) Restart Engine and it worked fine 3) A few days later and till now when i try to enable cruise nothing happens at ALL Does this mean a fuse problem or is this common with such issues Any one knows which fuse i should check

Guys latest on this Today cruise worked ok and set the speed Then on its own after 3 minutes or so the set light started flashing and speed control turned off and I could not even turn it off until motor was turned off Then we are back to cruise not working at all as per above post Any ideas or hints given this pattern of events

Adjust the cancel switch on the brake pedal first I know it's a long time from this post but my fix was free and not suggested by anyone I can find. Over time your brake pedal settles and the cancel switch against it wears a little, before you do anything else adjust the cancel switch closer to the pedal. To do this there are two switches together, the rear one is the cruise cancel, the front is the brake light. Take hold of it and twist 90 degrees anti clockwise, it will come out. Reinsert closer to the pedal and try it. Mine was not set the same distance as the brake light switch, when it was, the cruise worked fine again. I had all the symptoms you are mentioning previously. Hope this saves a lot of money for members, cost me nothing.

Welcome to the club hobiecatman !

I think I mean top one sorry. Easy to check though, have someone hold brake pedal down (or use a broom handle against the seat back) and with a screwdriver or flat blade, push the switch actuator in with it. If the brake lights go out when depressed the cruise is the OTHER switch. Its should be very easy to unlock the switch, no effort is needed. its anticlockwise from looking at the switch from the back where the wires enter. you will be twisting the body of the switch. park against the garage door so you can see the reflection of the brake lights from the seat as you will be upside down head under the dash. (If you child is not a 13 year old girl they may be more inclined to help than mine was!!!!) FYI Mine worked fine for a while then resorted to flashing the set light again. seems I have no choice but to replace steering wheel switch. I can still set cruise when just the ignition is one but not after the engine is started but at least it doen not cancel on its own when you are least expecting it to, I think that is a benefit to adjusting the pedal switch. Very strange, you would think that it would either work or not. I have not got round to ordering the part, $112 was the cheapest I found from dealer direct website for the audio and cruise switch harness.

Thanks for the info. What dealer site did you use to order the new switch harness? I am going to try again to get the cancel plunger out and set the depth. But, I am thinking that I will probably have to order a new steering wheel switch. Thanks again. Bill

Mike, Thanks for input, maybe between us we can solve this, you replace brake switch, I will do the steering switch, I think mine is the steering now as sometimes it won't switch at all and I keep pressing the steering switch till it it comes on even though it starts flashing. My gut feeling is based on if it was the brake or speed sensors etc it would at least switch on every time the switch was pushed on the steering wheel. I just find it hard to start pulling the steering wheel off to do the job. I can find plenty of better things to do with my Saturday hence putting up with this for over a year now.

I am having the same problem as you. Sometimes I can push the on/off button but nothing happens. Keep us updated. Thanks. Bill

Welcome Macluvr/Mike !

The cheapest site i found when taking shipping and no tax into account was mynissanparts.com i ordered it yesterday they said it will be shipped in a couple of days so about a week to me. Comes from mid west somewhere. I will keep updating progress as i got frustrated that there is no definate answer i could find.

Bill The switch is like a screw and a bayonet together, undo anticlockwise, move in or out a little and twist clockwise it will adjust the depth So said the actress to the bishop!!!!!

Thanks for the info. Will give it a try when I get home from work today.

Great to hear Mike!!! Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Bugger!!!! I just took mikes advice and thought I would disconnect the cancel switch on the brake. I ran the car and it switched on but would not set so I clicked it back in and it works fine. It must be brake cancel switch. Now I will have to change the order!!! Thanks mike for making the effort to post. This should be the first thing to change in future before anything else for this problem. Mynissanparts.com sell them for $18 each.

Peter, I will give it a try today. Thanks to you and Mike for your hard work in determining the problem and finding a solution. Bill

Bill, If you need anything give [email protected] a try. On top of the cheapest I found for this part on the web they have been outstanding today at swapping over the part I originally ordered to the foot pedal switch just with one email from me. [email protected] or call 866.831.2622 I will be trying them first from now on. Let us know what outcome you have, Peter

Ever since a car wash my cruise control set light has been blinking and cruise control can not be set. It worked for a half hour trip today but when I turned it on to come back it was blinking the whole way home.

almost sounds like a loose connection somewhere along the lines.

Do you clean your dash/steering wheel with ArmorAll or something similar? That stuff will ooze into the switches and foul em up. You can take everything apart and clean the contacts really well and that might take care of it.

Auto or stick? If it's a stick, then when driving, see if you can pull up the clutch pedal with your foot and see if the cruise will work. If not, then try pulling up on the brake pedal and do the same thing. Do the same with an auto trans, but just for your brake pedal. If this makes your cruise work, then you have a bad or misadjusted clutch/brake switch. Otherwise, unplug the cruise module (located on the passenger's side inner fender, near the firewall) and then blow the connector out, plug it back in and see if it works after that.

I think I was thinking one thing, typed another. I owe you a beer, how's that?!

Cyclemut is referring to the actuator, under the hood (has a throttle cable attached). My pic is of the computer, which is under the steering wheel. check the connections at the actuator. Sent via wild ferrets on crack

Does anyone have a labeled picture of the actuator?

The plug looks tight

Looking tight and being tight are different. You'll want to pull the plug, blow any potential moisture out of the plug and the socket, then reconnect it.

I've got the same thing now it's been a few weeks. When it doesn't blink, and if it works and I'm using the cruise control, turning the right turn signal can disable the cruise, and once in a while, the left turn signal will do it. It seems to happen most often on rainy days, but it's been cold to very cold with snow, but I have a hard time associating it with rain and this, the problem is outside the cabin, when I want to say the issue is in the wheel or column controls because of the signal lights affecting the cruise function. Some say it's the cancel switch on the brake pedal, but I don't see that either, but worth a look. But I'm mostly wondering if anyone with my symptomes have isolated the issue.

I haven't had a chance to check it out. I spent more time in the field than not after coming back from my Xmas vacations, but I have Monday off and planned to use the mother-in-laws garage (since it's -20*C out) and I have the day off from being in the field, but this past Friday just popped out 2 new problems, or probably/hopefully, symptoms to this problem: Only with the headlights/running lights on: - Left signal light stays on after use, mind you it's a bit dimmer so you can see it brighten with the signal light when in use after, but it can only be reset by turning off the headlights and back on, and sometimes you need to signal to the right. - Brake lights are all. I"ll check the cruise circuit, but I'm also going to maybe look at the tow harness after, just to see if that doesn't fix anything.

So in the end, the problem was related to a badly corroded trailer harness. Sadly I had just installed a 7-pin this summer so everything was fine and dandy and it corroded where the two 4-pin connectors connected. Corroded so bad that one of the pins broke off into the other one. It was probably caused by all the salt and brine that was shot up by the rear wheels, but to do this after half a winter surprised me, and I wouldn't of guessed that it would of affected the cruise control like it did. I'm just glad it was an easy find and an easy fix. Well, it's patched up for now, but I'll need it in March, but resoldering a new connector is easy-peasy, i'll do that later.

Cruise Control light blinking

Pvt-Public

  • Add to quote

This has happened only once the other night. I was cruising about 50MPH, hit the brakes for a red light, while I was at the red light the Cruise Control light started flashing. The cruise control would not engage at any speed during the flashing stage, and I didn't think it would as a flashing light usually means a malfunction. I went a few miles turned the car off, restarted it and haven't had a problem since. Any ideas? Or just chalk this up to a 1 time glitch?

Kooter

"If the cruise control indicator light flashes: Turn the “ON-OFF” button off once, and then reactivate the system. If the cruise control speed cannot be set or if the cruise control cancels immediately after being activated, there may be a malfunction in the cruise control system. Contact your Toyota dealer and have your Toyota inspected." Read Page 3 (3rd page down) of THIS

That's in my owners manual too, but I tried that. The light just continued to flash every time I tried to turn it on again. It was only after I shut off the car and restarted it that the cruise would work again. And it has been working for the last 3 days since it happened.

Glad you were able to reset it, but I wonder what caused it? ABS or speed sensor maybe malfunctioning, or just a glitch :dunno: Did you slam on brakes for that light, or just slow down normal? Last time I encountered something like this (on a different vehicle), one of my front abs/speed sensor wires was snapped/stretched. The fault was permanent until that wire was fixed though.

Luna2

Any or all brake light bulbs out? That is supposed to cause the CC to fail (Fail-safe mode?). JAT

Did you slam on brakes for that light, or just slow down normal? Click to expand...
Any or all brake light bulbs out? Click to expand...

Could be an indication of your brake pedal sensor beginning to fail. Make sure that it is operating the rear lights correctly, you can check its signal to the computer with a professional scan tool. Also, the Cruise Control switch could be starting to act up / fail... you can also check this with a scan tool, as well as history codes from the last failure within 60 or so ignition cycles... I believe the CC goes into "fail-safe" mode when it sees a signal from the switch that last longer than a predetermined time more than once in a given timeframe.

It's been 5 days with no further problems. Brake and CC switch seem to be working. I am just keeping my fingers crossed for now. Thanks for the suggestions.

Hey brining back this old topic Just got in a 2010 Camry (to be clear, I am a Toyota freak... have had over 20 personally and own a classic JDM Toyota, but FREQUENTLY get Toyotas for our car business - I am a Toyota enthusiast but not every one that I write about is mine) SAME issue, and when I bought it from auction, it had a check engine light for the brake switch which had been cleared (on its own) from the system before it made it to me via shipping. CANNOT be a coincidence. The local junk yard has many Siennas which, second gen, use the same switch. About to see if that fixes it. Best Drew

Stillfixingit

My 2000 CE had a bad Brake light switch a few months ago. I noticed my car wouldn't shift into gear (automatic) or maintain cruise control but blink when activated. Then I noticed my brake lights were out. So after changing the BLS (brake light switch) and adjusting it, My brake lights came back and I was able to shift gear normally. BUT< to this day my cruise control system is not working. It turns on but once I set the speed it doesn't do its thing but blinks. So thinking to check the actuator...read someone say theirs did the same thing and it a was a small connecting brush inside that wore down.... anyone had the same experience?

Sibp

Hello, did you end up figuring this out? I have the same issue on my 2002 Toyota Rav4. I replaced the brake light switch but it did not fix the issue.

Shoot that I’m not sure about, and the car is gone. I hope it works out for you

Yikes! Not sure what else it could be!

neddlovric

can someone help me with my mystery, Camry 2010 cruise control not working only blinks even when I changed the brake light switch. Maybe its the speed sensor?

Porsch23

My 06 does the same, a bump in the highway can knock it back to blinking, sometimes i can slow down to 50mph and i can re engage it , sometimes its out for days sometimes it works for days i got new brake light switch for brake lights but it still does the same so im thinkin the stretched or loose wire somehow might be the issue, sux a bump never makes it able to coome back on tho lol 06 camry, turnin it on and off never works for me either

Jus slowed down to 40 to go thru town and it worked lol

Brake light and cruise control light are blinking

  • Add to quote

2012 Outback 3.6 brake and cruise control light is blinking. Comments about what problem may be. Thanks

DAW89446

Sounds like you didn’t tighten the gas cap to the proper degree. The first time it happened to me it freaked me out as I was on a long trip and it kicked the cruise control off. After I got home I Googled it and found that the vast majority of times it is because the gas cap isn’t tight enough. I bought an inexpensive OBD II reader with capability to reset the check engine light, problem solved. I had it happen once since. I have a ‘12 4-cylinder OB Premium.

DugsSin

You need to pull the codes yourself or take it to someone who can. Then maybe we can help.

did you install LED brake lights? if so remove them and install incandescent ones

P0457 SUBARU: Code Meaning, Causes, Symptoms, & Tech Notes (engine-codes.com)

That was likely it. Thanks. It was frustrating as I was still 175 miles from home with long desert roads and no cruise control. Been carrying the OBD reader in the compartment under the back floor since. Used it once more on a trip to Idaho since the original time. I’m also in the habit to click the gas cap a couple of times after fueling.
