Plan A Vacation

cruise excursions to atlantis bahamas

If you are planning or have been on a cruise, then you are probably aware that one of the major stops for many Caribbean cruises is Nassau in the Bahamas. We were fortunate enough to go on another cruise that stopped in the Bahamas on our recent trip, and one thing I overheard was that there isn’t a whole lot to do in Nassau for kids. I might have agreed with that sentiment prior to this trip, but one surefire thing to do that kids will enjoy is visiting Atlantis.

You may have heard about Atlantis in the past but you may not entirely be sure what there is to do there. For those who are visiting as part of a day trip on a cruise, the biggest attraction is the Aquaventure Water Park. According to Atlantis’ website, the water park is spread out over 141 acres, much of which is lined with beaches. The park has a number of water slides as well as a “rapids river”, which is a combination of a lazy and not-so-lazy river.

Getting there from the cruise port is pretty straightforward. There are a number of taxis waiting just outside of the gate after you leave the port. We didn’t have any issues whatsoever with either of our taxi trips, and if you use one of the services that combine passengers from multiple cruise ships the price is only $5 per person each way. We liked that there were about 8 – 10 passengers with us each way, as it made us feel just a little bit safer in a foreign country. If you do feel like you want an additional amount of security you might check out Cheryl’s Taxi Service. We saw that they were highly recommended and had excellent reviews from various sites. I felt like the taxis waiting at the gate were absolutely sufficient, and I think there was an extra element of ease with their operation. We didn’t have to meet up or stay in contact with a particular service. The distance to Atlantis is approximately 2 miles from the port if you feel up to a hike. I would definitely NOT recommend this as the day trip is already short and there would be the least amount of safety with this route. Doing research on how to get there before you leave for your cruise is recommended. There is of course the option of going as a port adventure with your cruise, which will make the travel portion a whole lot easier, but it will also cost an additional amount per person and may restrict your time at the destination.

There was a little bit of a line waiting to purchase tickets to get into Atlantis. If you aren’t going as part of a port adventure with your cruise, buying tickets ahead of time would be recommended so you can skip this line. You can purchase tickets directly on their website so that there are no additional fees tacked onto the tickets by third parties. The website was a little confusing as to where to book the Aquaventure Day experience. It is currently located under Experience > Aquaventure and then scroll down to Aquaventure Day Pass Booking.

Once we got inside the resort there was a little bit of a walk to get to Aquaventure. There were people that helped guide us to the water park. There were also lockers available at Aquaventure for us to keep our belongings in, and we didn’t have any issue purchasing or securing these.

The water park itself is large so finding our way around was a slight learning curve. We finally locked down a beach chair that was between the Mayan Pyramid slides, the near-Pandora looking slides and the Rapids River. This made it easier for everyone to find each other at a somewhat central location.

I think the favorite activity among our family was definitely the Rapids River. It had a mix of calm, slow moving water and spots where you would go down rapids. The rapids weren’t too much for anyone in our group, and I would think that ages 8 and up would be great at a minimum. We also enjoyed the water slides but didn’t make it to the most challenging ones. There was also an awesome water slide among the Mayan slides that ended by going past a bunch of sea life through a clear tube.

A multitude of lunch options were available at the park itself, including grilled burgers, jerk chicken and adult beverages too. There were also restaurants inside the resort such as a pizzeria and mediterranean cuisine. If you are jonesing for Starbucks you can get that here as well.

Lastly, we did walk through a casino as we made our way in and out of the resort. We did not stay to play any of the games, but it was a large casino with slot machines, cards, roulette and the works. This part is definitely not for kids but if any adults are looking for a little gambling time on your cruise, this certainly fits the bill.

All in all it was a great day. We got to see parts of Nassau on the way to and from the resort and cruise port, and our family had a really enjoyable day. It is absolutely a worthwhile visit and one that can either be done as a port adventure through the cruise activities or on your own.

3 Thoughts on “Tips for Visiting Atlantis in Nassau (from a Cruise)”

This was helpful, can we walk?

I wouldn’t recommend walking from the boat to Atlantis as it would take up a good part of your day. It is possible to do however.

Also thank you for the compliment 🙂

Everything you must know about shore excursions (Shorex) to Atlantis on a cruise to Nassau port: overview, good to know, highlights, cruise line price comparison, how-to book and get to Atlantis on your own, and map.

The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is a world in itself with such an array of attractions - beaches, shops, water park, golf course and casino - that all cruise lines offer at least one tour to fully enjoy this iconic site of The Bahamas.

Aquaventure Water Park Day Pass

Until a few years ago, all cruise lines used to offer a basic shore excursion to the resort entitled Discover Atlantis Tour. This tour doesn't exist anymore. Instead, most cruise lines now offer the 'Atlantis Aquaventure Day Pass'. This consists of a 5-hour pass which includes access to Aquaventure Water Park, the beautiful beaches and pool of Atlantis, lunch, and transportation to and from the resort.

The Aquaventure Water Park is Atlantis resort massive 141-acre waterscape with pools, water coasters, body slides, rivers and more than 50,000 sea creatures where you will have a one-of-a-kind exciting day. For more information check the Atlantis Official Website .

The Aquaventure Tour is also offered in combination with two one-of-a-kind dolphin experiences - the shallow water interaction and the swimming with dolphins in a deep cay. You can choose to just enjoy any of the Dolphin Interactions or have this combined with the rest of the day at the beach. Celebrity, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean also offer a Sea Lion Interaction.

Shorex Combos

Disney Cruises is the only cruise line that offers the Aquaventure shore excursion combined with other experiences such as kayaking, snorkeling, or paddleboarding with Dolphins. Disney Cruises also offers a 6.5 to 7 Hour experience at the Ocean Club Golf Course for $599.00 including Green fees, clubs, golf cart and shoe rentals but not including beverages and meals.

Other excursions to Atlantis resort

Disney is the only cruise line that keeps the Discover Atlantis Tour and Beach Day cruise excursion - a 6-hour tour priced at $98.00 (ages 10, and up), and $83.00 (ages 4 to 9). The Shore Excursions Group offers a smiliar but shorter tour entitled Discover Nassau Town and Atlantis. This tour by Shore Excursions Group is just 2 Hours and 30 Minutes long, costing $57.00.

Good To Know

Cruise line price comparison.

Considering that shore excursion prices may vary by sailing, it is advisable to check updates and specific cruises. The following prices are indicative.

Click on the following cruise lines links to check for updated prices:

  • Royal Caribbean

Shorex, online or on your own

As most cruise passengers that have booked shore excursions onboard will tell you, the great advantage of doing so is the peace of mind guaranteed by the cruise line. You will not have to look for transportation to Atlantis, negotiate prices with taxi drivers, and when you will be taken back to the ship on time. But you may want to look into other ways of exploring Atlantis.

Online Services

There is the possibility to book online with the many services that offer shore excursions to Atlantis. Prices vary and it is advisable to check what is offered on each tour.

The following online services are well-established companies that guarantee the returning of cruise passengers in good time prior to the departure of the ship. IQCruising does not endorse or get paid to mention any of these services. IQCruising is just providing the information and you should be aware that you are solely responsible for booking excursions online with these third-party services.

Direct Booking

Before deciding which is the best excursion for you and your cruising companions, whether it is better to book onboard or with an online service, you may also want to check directly with Atlantis.

Cruise travelers that wish to book a day tour directly with Atlantis will find that the resort will request proof that your sailing on a specific cruise line. Prices may, in some cases, be slightly lower but do not include transportation to Atlantis, located in Paradise Island. Therefore, the savings (if any) may be minimal. But you will be in charge of your own time. Atlantis Day Booking Web Page

How to get to Atlantis

Paradise Island (where Atlantis is located) is connected to Nassau by two bridges but is a bit too far to walk from the cruise terminal. There are two ways of getting to Atlantis on your own. Either by taxi - sharing a large van will cost around $10,00 per person (each way) - or with a ferry boat.

Next to the cruise terminal, on the right side, on Woodes Roger Walk, you will find a Ferry Boat (costs around $8.00 USD return). The ferry will take you on a short cruise through the harbor ending at a dock under the main bridge on Paradise Island. From here you are within walking distance to Atlantis.

What's nearby

If you decide to explore Atlantis on your own, and in particular if you go on the Ferry Boat you may like to walk around and check a few other places on Paradise Island.

The Bahamcraft Center is great for local gifts and souvenirs. A couple of popular restaurants - the Green Parrot Bar and the super famous Margaritaville Bahamas - are ideal for a quick bite or lunch before returning to the cruise ship.

How to Take a Day Trip to Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas

cruise excursions to atlantis bahamas

The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is an entire tropical world unto itself. This Bahamian resort boasts casinos, underwater shark walks, and frolicking dolphins. As one of the most famous hotels in the Bahamas , the Atlantis also boasts multiple hotel towers and specific resort sections to accommodate a wide variety of guests' every wish. But, you don’t need to be a guest at the resort to visit this mega-resort. In fact, millions of visitors to Nassau take a quick taxi or water-shuttle ride to experience the resort's casinos and restaurants. From information on the top attractions to details about how to get there (and which day pass to reserve), read on for your ultimate guide to day-tripping to Atlantis Paradise Island.

Attractions and Things to Do at Atlantis Paradise Island

There are 85 gaming tables, 21 restaurants, and 19 bars and lounges at Atlantis Paradise Island. However, while throwing down some cash on the craps tables or roulette wheel may satisfy some visitors, others—especially families—are drawn to the Atlantis' aquatic allure; specifically the resort's spectacular "lost world" themed water park, dolphin encounter program, beaches, and the underground mysteries of The Dig, a walk-through exploration of the Lost City of Atlantis. Day tickets for all of these activities can be purchased at Discover Atlantis Sales Centers located throughout the property.

Given the hordes of visitors to the Atlantis daily, it's not surprising that the resort limits access to some of these attractions—notably the Aquaventure pool and water park area—to preserve a premier experience for hotel guests. However, that does not mean that day-trippers can't visit the Atlantis attractions, including Aquaventure; you'll have to pay a bit for the privilege (and expect a significant markup on these prices if you buy through a cruise line).

  • Dolphin Cay at Atlantis: Day visitors can swim and play with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at the state-of-the-art, 14-acre habitat.
  • Discover Atlantis Tour: This tour is best known to day-trippers, in part because it is sold as an excursion on cruise ships. Expert "Navigators" guide visitors through the ancient city streets of Atlantis during a visit to "The Dig," a faux-but-believable archaeological exploration of an 11,000-year-old lost continent. The attraction is full of interesting artifacts, along with great water effects and glimpses of exotic sea life, including piranha, moon jellyfish, venomous lionfish, and a resident manta ray. A Discover Atlantis Tour wristband allows visitors to explore The Dig and its exhibits as well as the Ruins, Predator, and Water’s Edge Lagoons—but not the waterpark.
  • Atlantis Beach Day: The Atlantis Beach Day program provides all-day access to the Atlantis resort's exclusive white sandy beaches, with lounge chairs and towels provided. It also includes access to marine habitats and lunch at an outside venue.
  • Atlantis Aquaventure Package : Day-trippers can purchase an Atlantis Aquaventure package that provides all-day access to pools, beaches, and Aquaventure, a 141-acre waterscape containing over 20 million gallons of water with water slides, and a mile-long river ride with high-intensity rapids and wave surges. The passes are only available to guests staying at partners of the Atlantis Resort. They can be purchased (on a restricted basis) at the Atlantis Adventures Desk at the clock tower in front of The Coral.

How to Get There

Paradise Island (formerly Hog Island) is a 685-acre island off the northern coast of Nassau, the capital of the island of New Providence. There is no public transport to take you to Paradise Island—the local bus system, the "jitney," will only take you as far as the ferry terminal, so your best bet is either to take a ferry or a taxi.

To access Paradise Island by water, hop aboard a 15-minute ferry ride from Nassau to Paradise Island. The ferry departs from Nassau Cruise Port from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs $3 for a one-way ticket. On your boat ride to Paradise Island, a guide will also give you a brief history lesson of the island and its many attractions. Once you've arrived on Paradise Island, it's a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock to Marina Village in Atlantis.

If you decide to rent a car, note that there is limited free parking available on Paradise Island (and limited spots are found near the public beach). The best alternative is to valet your vehicle at the cost of $16.75 per day. Whether you're driving or opting for a taxi, be prepared to pay the northbound one-way $1 bridge toll. In taxis, this will be on top of your metered fare—and the average cost for a one-way trip from Lynden Pindling International Airport to Paradise Island is about $35. Another alternative is to be dropped off along the coast of New Providence to walk across the bridge (an activity that is toll-free). Once you've arrived on the island, there's no need to rent a car, as visitors can easily walk the grounds and explore everything the hotel has to offer on foot.

Day passes are mandatory for all non-hotel guests at the Atlantis to experience Dolphin Cay, the waterpark, the marine habitat, and the beaches. The passes can be purchased (on a restricted basis) at the Atlantis Adventures desk, situated at the clock tower at The Coral. These passes have been known to sell out, so it's imperative to book online in advance. World Travel Holdings also sells day passes to Aquaventure, Atlantis Dolphin Cay, and the iconic British Colonial Hilton. These passes are marketed primarily to cruise visitors but can be an excellent add-on for anyone visiting Nassau.

  • The Aquaventure pass includes admission to Aquaventure and The Dig, lounge chairs, and towels.
  • Dolphin Cay experiences include a shallow-water interaction with dolphins.
  • The British Colonial Hilton pass includes all-day access to the resort's pristine private beach and pool, snorkeling and kayaking, lounge chairs and towels, and a food and beverage credit.

Tips for Visitors

  • There's more to Paradise Island than just the Atlantis, so be sure to explore the rest of the island. We suggest hiking to the Nassau lighthouse for gorgeous seaside views along the coast. Of all the waterpark attractions, the underwater shark walk is not to be missed—imagine a turquoise tunnel full of predators. (It's as scary and thrilling as it sounds).
  • There is no visitor information center in Paradise Island, so make sure to consult downtown the tourist information available for visitors in downtown Nassau.
  • If you're planning on staying for dinnertime, make a reservation in advance, as restaurants can become busy, especially in the colder months. Additionally, the resort will limit attractions during the peak busy season to preserve hotel guests' experience—a hindrance that won't be an issue for you if you're visiting during the off-season. If you're visiting in the off-season (summer and fall), expect fewer crowds—for the waterslides and the bars and restaurants, alike.
  • If you're taking the ferry to Paradise Island, remember to bring cash. Although exact change isn't necessary, it's helpful as you will be expected to tip your tour guides, who provide colorful commentary and historical insight into the past and present-day iterations of Nassau and Paradise Island.

OVERVIEW Gain insight into the history of Nassau and how the capital city has changed over the centuries by visiting key landmarks, beginning with Fort Fincastle. Built to resemble a paddle-wheel steamboat with a huge wedge-shaped bow, the fort has perched on a hilltop since 1793, although it was never attacked. As a defense, the only access to the fort is the Queen’s Staircase, whose 66 steps were hand-cut through solid limestone. Other historical highlights include the Governor’s House and the Governor General’s official residence since 1801. But there is much more to Nassau than history as you will see by passing the lively Straw Market on the way to the Bahamas Rum Cake Factory, where you will sample the namesake cake, which may be flavored with banana, cinnamon or piña colada. In time, you will cross Sidney Poitier Bridge, named for the first Bahamian to win an Oscar, and pause for photos of the luxurious and iconic Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island.

HIGHLIGHTS • Delve into the history of Nassau at the 18th-century Fort Fincastle. • See other historical landmarks and fine shopping areas such as the Straw Market. • Sample an iconic Bahamian dessert at the Bahamas Rum Cake Factory. • Pause for photos of luxurious and iconic Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island.

HELPFUL HINTS • Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

Best shore excursions for Bahamas cruises

Melinda Crow

From lazy lounging on the beach to action-packed water adventures, cruise ship shore excursions in the Bahamas are packed with fun in the sun and sea.

Whether you're looking to get wet, get chill or get stuff, you'll find a way to do it on a shore excursion here. You can swim with pigs and dive with sharks. You can cruise the islands on ATVs or skim across the water on a wide array of vessels. Tours often include time to shop the straw markets, and many also include traditional Bahamian lunches, snacks and/or beverages.

The list of Bahamas tours and activities includes options to suit almost everyone. We sorted through the choices to find you the best Bahamas shore excursions. Ready? Let's dive in.

Prices for the same tours can vary across cruise lines and third-party sellers, so tours are listed below by price ranges, using the following shorthand (per adult):

$= $0-50. $$= $51-99. $$$= $100-199. $$$$=$200-499.

Best Nassau, Bahamas shore excursions

cruise excursions to atlantis bahamas

Island food and culinary tour

3-3.5 hours, easy, $$.

Bahamas food and beverage excursions are an ideal way to immerse yourself in the culture of the islands. You'll feast on island specialties and favorites such as conch fritters or salad, rock lobster, traditional cornbread-like Johnny cakes and tropical punches laced with rum. Most cruise lines offer food tours that stop at multiple local eateries. There may be walking involved, so be sure to read your cruise line's description.

Blue Lagoon beach break

Varies, easy to moderate, $$-$$$.

Some of the best excursions in Nassau are to Blue Lagoon Island, a privately owned island with a beach, food, water sports and other activities. You can choose the standard beach break option with lunch, beach games and use of water noodles and tubes. Or you can upgrade to a tour that includes snorkeling or swimming with stingrays, dolphins, sharks and even sea lions. Additional activities can be purchased upon arrival on the island.

Scuba diving with sharks

4.5 hours, moderate, $$$-$$$$.

If you are a certified scuba diver and have ever considered diving with sharks, this is your excursion. The shark dives involve one reef dive, followed by a second dive with everyone kneeling in the sand on the bottom as the shark feeder doles out his goodies. You've heard the term "sharknado?" It's a real thing and being in one is an adrenaline rush you'll never forget.

I should warn the shark-timid among you that because Caribbean reef sharks are plentiful in the waters surrounding Nassau and because dive shops have been doing baited shark dives here for years, you may encounter sharks on any dive in Nassau, though at a bit more distance than during the shark feeds. In fact, I've never not seen a shark while diving here.

Paradise Island and Aquaventure Oasis Waterpark

All day, moderate, $$$$.

Excursions that include access to Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas seem to no longer mention the name of the mega-resort that made Paradise Island famous. If you've always wanted to go, excursions labeled Aquaventure are your ticket.

The day pass includes access to miles of beaches, the on-site casino, and the Aquaventure water park featuring 141 acres of slides, swimming areas, river rides, and wave areas. The pass also allows you to dine in the resort's eateries, explore a myriad of shops or even add an aquatic animal experience like a dolphin swim.

You can purchase Atlantis day passes independently, but the advantage of booking your visit as an excursion is that transportation will be included.

Best shore excursions in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island

cruise excursions to atlantis bahamas

Freeport island tour, beach and shopping

4 hours, easy, $.

Shore excursions that bundle a tour with a beach break and shopping are always a good choice in the Bahamas. You get to see a bit of the island, learn its history, shop for souvenirs and get in some coveted beach time, all with easy transportation. This kind of tour is especially useful if you've never been to Grand Bahama Island. For a small amount of money, you get to scope the place out for your adventures on your next Bahamas cruise.

Pirate's Cove beach, zipline and waterpark

4 hours, moderate, $$$.

If zip lining is your thing, this is a good place to get your fix. The beachside zip line has options for starting at 50 feet up or 30 feet, making it ideal for newbies wanting to try the experience. Since this excursion also includes time at the beach and floating water park, consider it a deal.

Glass bottom boat shark experience

3 hours, easy, $$$.

Want to see Caribbean reef sharks without putting your toes in the water? This excursion takes you on a glass-bottom boat ride to waters where Caribbean reef sharks have been fed. The boat has ample deck space for sunning when you aren't watching the action below the boat. It's a fun way to spend a day out on the water with an opportunity to see these predators and other colorful tropical fish without fear. Typical Bahamian refreshments round out the fun.

Blue hole snorkeling

5 hours, moderate, $$$.

My rule of thumb is to snorkel at every opportunity while in the Bahamas. It's a fun and easy way to take a peek beneath the waves at the colorful sea life found in these waters. When you book a snorkeling excursion in the Bahamas, gear is provided, including snorkeling vests to keep you afloat.

For the best Bahamas snorkeling, choose a blue hole snorkeling excursion. Blue holes are found throughout the Bahamas and are essentially open-topped caverns, so it's like swimming in a fishbowl. Some are landlocked, where they may be filled with either fresh or salt water, and inhabited by a wide range of aquatic life, including crabs, lobsters, octopus and fish. Others are offshore, below the surface of the ocean, creating a mini reef environment to explore.

This excursion involves a lengthy ride, but it's definitely worth it.

Swim with the pigs

1.5 hours, easy, $$$.

Swimming pigs are kind of a big deal in the Bahamas. Animal lovers can enjoy time in shallow water watching (and even feeding) these silly pigs. Most of the cruise line private islands also offer pig swims, but the one in Freeport does not involve a boat ride, which may make it more appealing to some. You'll also get time to hang out on Crystal Beach and buy lunch.

Snorkeling from shore or by boat

Varies, moderate, $-$$.

Cruise ship private islands make snorkeling easy. Most of the islands will offer snorkeling gear for rent, and you can snorkel right from the beach. (If you, like me, never miss an opportunity to put your face in the water, consider buying your own snorkel gear for future sailings.) Optional boat excursions to primo snorkeling spots are also possible from some islands.

1-1.5 hours, moderate, $-$$.

Kayaking from the cruise line private islands gives you a new perspective of these fun playgrounds. Tours are led by experienced guides who can point out sea life in shallow water while leading you along the shore of the tropical paradise. Beginners are welcome and life jackets are provided.

Stingray City Bahamas

1.5 hours, easy, $$.

While the Stingray City experience has been popular in Grand Cayman for years, it's relatively new to the Bahamas. Stingray City Bahamas is located among the Berry Islands, home to Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay and Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay. You'll be taken on a short speedboat ride to a shallow sandy spot in a location where stingrays congregate. Your guide will provide fish to feed the rays, which swoop in and suck the fish from your hand. It's a fun outing if you haven't done it before and it doesn't take away too much of your beach time on the island.

Horseback riding by land and sea

1.25 hours, moderate, $$$.

Carnival offers a horseback riding tour from Half Moon Cay that includes a brief venture into the sea with your horse. The minimum age is 10. As the mother of a horse-loving daughter, I can tell you that riding in the ocean was one of her favorite cruise memories ever. No riding experience is required, but you must be able to follow directions and pay attention to your guide for your own safety as well as that of the horses and other riders. One other thing to know: There will be poo, both on land and in the water.

Bottom line

Bahamas shore excursions typically focus on activity in the water, but if shopping, food tours or sightseeing are more your thing, you'll find those options as well. The Bahamas is made up of a culturally rich collection of islands that have a reputation for welcoming visitors with arms wide open. From simple beach break excursions to full-day tours, you can easily find something that floats your boat in the Bahamas.

The remainder of the time on the island is yours to spend snorkeling, relaxing on the beach, playing at the aqua park and enjoying an included buffet lunch.

Your guides will show you a historic church, an abandoned lighthouse and the ruins of a packing house, while telling you all about life in the Out Islands.

Atlantis Aquaventure via Royal Caribbean Excursion

A group of 17 of us took an excursion to the Atlantis Aquaventure during our cruise on the Oasis of the Seas. Our price was $165 per adult, although from what I am told, the price fluctuates throughout the season. We ran into someone there from our ship who did it on his own for $140 plus a $4 cab ride, so we could have a saved a few bucks. Anyway, we got off the ship at about 7:15am and took a group shuttle to Atlantis. Our van driver was personable and friendly. Once we got to Atlantis at a little after 8am, we took the time to walk through the aquarium since the water attractions didn't open until 9am. If you aren't interested in the aquariums, you can walk around the property for a bit. At 9am, the Mayan slides open (that's the Leap of Faith, the Challenger,Serpent Slide, and Jungle Slides. There were not a lot of people there that early, so we went on each several times in a row with no lines at all. The (not-so) Lazy River opened at 9:30 and it was WELL worth your time. I'm not exactly sure how long it was, but it felt like a good 15-20 minutes to do a full lap. It's loaded with rapids and wave machines so you won't be able to rest too much over the course of your ride. Watch your ankles and watch your head, some of it is very fast. At 10am, the Power Tower opens which has the Abyss slide and 3 tube rides (The Fall, The Drop, and The Surge, All of the attractions (with the exception of the Falls and the Drop - these are just ok) are AMAZING and among the coolest rides I've ever been on. We were very lucky going in early February because the park wasn't busy in any way and we had very short lines for our time there. Don't worry if your excursion is only booked until 1pm or so, we went on 14 different rides and were basically tired of walking up stairs. We left on the noon shuttle and were completely satisfied. It's a bit pricey, but if you don't go during a busy vacation week, you should have an unforgettable experience. I read reviews that the pavement is REALLY hot when the temperature is hot, but it was only the low 80s and we walked around in water shoes or barefeet all day. We rented a $15 "large" locker and it was more than enough for the towels were brought (but didn't need to bring) and our bags.

Our favorite slides were the Serpent Slide, The Jungle Slide and The Abyss--- hours of fun! Must go on the lazy river (warning: it is not very lazy! thrilling and exciting is more like it!) Very clean, staff is very friendly and helpful.

This is not just fun, fun, fun, but also breathtakingly beautiful. The Atlantis managed to make a super fun water park that is woven beautifully into this gorgeous resort.

What a beautiful and fun park!!!!!! Slides are awesome and some are scary and some are just pure fun. The tubes slides are the best as not that scary and go through fish tanks - so much fun. Rapid River is a must do!!!!!!

Really not worth the cost. Disappointing!! Lunch cost us $75 for 3 people - burgers, chips and beer. The staff is not very personable - almost robotic - never smile Will NEVER go back there.

Great waterpark but the music played at the pools is too loud - more suitable for a night club. The kids enjoyed the rapids tremendously and the pools were great!

How to Get to Paradise Island from Nassau, Bahamas Cruise Port

In This Post...

If you are simply a curious cruiser who wants to see Paradise Island and Atlantis Resort, there’s an easy way to get to Paradise Island from the Nassau cruise port. Take the Ferry Boat!

Of course, cruise ship shore excursions offer pricey packages to world-famous Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island. Excursions include the use its 141-acre Aquaventure water park complex and beautiful beaches. Do you need that?

Directions to the Ferry Boat to Paradise Island

Take a fun, inexpensive and informative 15-minute ferry boat ride right next to the cruise ship dock. The cost for a day at Atlantis is outrageous. Most people just want to see what’s inside Atlantis Resort without using the hotel’s beaches and other attractions.

How to Get to the Paradise Island Ferry

As you leave your ship, follow the crowd through Nassau’s Festival Place Welcome Center. Keep walking and then go straight ahead when you exit the building.

Continue walking straight ahead until you reach the crosswalk. Don’t cross the street but instead turn right. Follow the sidewalk along the waterfront. You’ll see a bank across the street on your left and if you keep walking, eventually you’ll be across from the Straw Market.

The ferry boat sign to Paradise Island.

Within about 100 steps, you’ll see a blue and white stand on the sidewalk with someone selling tickets for the ferry,  Be sure to bring cash with you from the ship, including several $1 bills. They don’t take credit cards.

How Much is the Ferry from Nassau to Paradise Island

The ferry charges $4 for one-way and $8 round-trip. Put your round-trip return ticket somewhere where it won’t get blow away.

Aboard the ferry boat from Nassau to Paradise Island and Atlantis Resort.

Once you have your ticket, you’ll be shown to the ferry to board. If you like sun, go up the narrow ladder to the top deck. The views are beautiful from up there.

Keep in mind there’s no covering so if you don’t have sunscreen, this might not be the best place to sit for the 15-minute ride to Paradise Island. Also, hold on to your hat; it gets pretty breezy up top, too.

What to Bring to Paradise Island

  • Cash in small bills for tips
  • Bottles of water
  • Comfortable shoes or sandals
  • Your ship’s ID card AND your driver’s license or government photo ID

During your short ferry boat ride from the Nassau Cruise Port to Paradise Island, a local Bahamian will provide a guided narration and point out homes of notable celebrities and quirky points of interest. Directions From the Nassau Ferry Dock to Atlantis Resort

Once your ferry is docked, it’s a 10-minute walk to the entrance of the Marina Village and Atlantis. Here’s what to do:

From the ferry, follow the crowd. We docked to the left of Margaritaville and then walked under the toll bridge that connects Nassau with Paradise Island.

Walking to Atlantis Resort from the ferry boat dock on Paradise Island.

Just follow the sidewalk (and the crowd) until you reach the traffic light. Cross straight ahead, turn right and cross again. The entrance to Marina Village will be on your left, about 200-ft ahead.

Walking along the path following the signs to Atlantis Resort.

Turn left into in Marina Village and keep walking straight ahead. The path winds a bit to your left.

Keep walking and pretty soon you’re at Atlantis. On your right is Murray’s Deli and straight ahead is a wide stairway leading into a side entrance to the hotel.

How to Get Inside Atlantis Resort

You’re allowed into Atlantis but you can’t do much except pay a visit to the Casino, the designer shops and the restaurants. If you’re not doing any of those things, plan on maybe 20-30 minutes inside, just to take a look around.

Outside, it’s easy to spend another half-hour ogling the spectacular yachts in the marina. But don’t lose track of time. If you’re running late, you can always catch a taxi from Atlantis Hotel back to the port.

It’ll run about $8-$10 for the ride but traffic at rush hour in downtown Nassau can come to a stand-still.

Going Back to Nassau by Ferry

Simply retrace your steps from Atlantis to the ferry boat. You might want to leave an hour or so for a snack and a drink at Margaritaville. The location is perfect – just a 5-minute walk to the ferry boarding area – and plenty of shade to relax and wind down your day.

Margaritaville at Paradise Island, near the ferry boat dock.

Depending on how many ships are in port, there will probably be a long line of people at the ferry boat for the return trip to Nassau. Remember…the ferry only runs every half-hour and the last ferry is at 6:00 p.m. Watch your time.

Back at Festival Place in Nassau, you will need to show the security guard your ship’s ID card and a government-issued photo ID.

That’s all there is to know to go from Nassau to Paradise Island and Atlantis Resort by ferry boat. Have a fun day at Paradise Island and Atlantis Hotel!

I Booked an Independent Shore Excursion Through Viator in Nassau. Here’s What I Learned.

cruise excursions to atlantis bahamas

When it comes to taking shore excursions in ports of call, I typically either prefer to book through the cruise line or simply do my own, independent touring. I have rarely booked an independent shore excursion, having only done so twice before: once in Belfast, Northern Ireland and again in Reykjavik, Iceland.

But I was confronted with a list of shore excursions on a recent cruise to Nassau, Bahamas that I wasn’t really excited about. Nothing interested me, and the ones that did were going to cost more money than I was prepared to pay. And I've had some bizarre shore excursion experiences in the past that make me particularly choosy.

I also didn’t want to just get off the ship and explore independently. That’s when I started browsing the independent tour listings on Viator, Cruise Critic’s sister-site that is also part of the Tripadvisor umbrella.

It didn’t take long for me to find a tour that interested me. A few minutes later, and I was booked. Less than two weeks after that, I was on the ground in Nassau. Here’s what I learned from booking my first independent shore excursion in Nassau.

  • Independent Shore Excursions Can Save Money, But Come with Pratfalls
  • My Independent Shore Excursion Showed Me More of Nassau
  • Independent Shore Excursions Draw a Wider Variety of Tourists
  • Independent Shore Excursions (Can) Support Smaller Businesses
  • Would I Book an Independent Shore Excursion Again? What I Learned.

1. When Booking Your Independent Shore Excursion, Pad Departure and Return Times

Boarding my cultural sights tour of Nassau (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

My sailing to Nassau aboard MSC Cruises’ MSC Magnifica was scheduled to arrive into Nassau at 11 a.m. and depart port at 7 p.m., with an all-aboard time of 6:30 p.m. But that doesn’t mean you can book an independent shore excursion leaving ten minutes after docking.

To play it safe, I chose an excursion departing at 1 p.m., and returning to the dock gates outside the cruise pier at 4:00 p.m. That would give me time to have lunch onboard and to account for any delays upon our arrival. Remember: when you arrive, the ship must tie up, have gangways put in place, and be cleared by the local authorities. Most of the time this happens without a hitch, but sometimes arrival can be delayed by a variety of factors.

I also knew I’d need to walk from my ship across Nassau’s sprawling pier and terminal infrastructure to an area outside the port. I budgeted 15 minutes for that so I wouldn’t be rushed.

Driving across Nassau's Sidney Poitier Bridge to Atlantis Resort (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Departing the ship at 12:30 p.m. for a 1 p.m. excursion turned out to be a good thing: I took a wrong turn and overshot the meeting point by one block. But because I’d given myself extra time, I arrived on schedule.

The same rules apply for returning to the ship: if it’s all-aboard at 6:30 p.m., don’t plan an excursion that gets back at 6 p.m. Give yourself at least an hour’s worth of cushion to return to the ship because, unlike a ship-sponsored shore excursion, the ship doesn’t know you’re on an independent tour – and doesn’t care. It will leave without you.

2. Independent Shore Excursions Can Save Money, But Come with Pratfalls

Visitors have to climb 66 steps to reach the top of the Queen's Staircase (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

My three hour “Feel the Culture” tour operated by Chippies Bahamas ran me a very reasonable $89 Canadian (about $65 USD). That’s miles less expensive than what most shore excursions in Nassau were going for.

But my decision to book an independent shore excursion in Nassau was motivated by other considerations, too: I’ve done most of the cruise line excursions that appealed to me, and was looking for something more. The fact I was able to save some money at the same time was just a bonus.

The biggest pratfall to booking an independent shore excursion – aside from potentially being left shoreside should delays en-route occur – is that it is independent of the cruise. If your ship has to divert for any reason, change itinerary or port times, you may not be entitled to a refund of your pre-booked (and pre-paid) independent shore excursion.

My own tour, booked through Viator, had a 24-hour cancellation policy. That’s early enough for me to decide I just don’t want to do it, but probably not soon enough to matter in the event the ship developed engine issues or was beset by weather.

And don’t expect the cruise line to help or care about your private shore excursion, in the instance of changed itineraries or port times. They didn’t make this booking – you did. You’re on your own.

3. My Independent Shore Excursion Showed Me More of Nassau

The Old Fort of Nassau (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

My “Feel the Culture” tour showcased more of Nassau than I’ve seen on previous shore excursions, from the wealthy enclave of Atlantis Resort to small backroads where locals sell fresh fruit juices spiked liberally with rum.

Most cruise line shore excursions focus on one place, typically Atlantis Resort, the Blue Lagoon, or a sandy beach. This tour ping-ponged around to some of the most interesting attractions on the island, from a speedy rum cake tasting to a walk through the historic Old Fort of Nassau.

There was also time to spend at Junkanoo Beach with a beer and some sun. We never lingered for long in any one place, but doing so allowed me to see more of Nassau than I had previously.

All of this was done with our two personable guides who live locally and have deep roots in Nassau. That’s a good thing: you’re getting the real deal from the folks who live there.

4. Independent Shore Excursions Draw a Wider Variety of Tourists

Stopping at a local business for juice and rum tastings, not to mentio fresh Conch (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

On a cruise line sponsored shore excursion, you’re typically paired with other cruise passengers – typically from the same ship.

My “Feel the Culture” tour included myself, sailing aboard MSC Magnifica . A woman travelling solo had come from the nearby Adventure of the Seas , while yet another couple hailed from Carnival Conquest .

During our Atlantis Resort stop, we picked up an American couple who were staying at the Resort. The cruise guests asked them about the resort, and they in turn about the cruise experience.

The result was a better vibe than most cruise line shore excursions: these people meaningfully chose this tour, and everyone was there to have fun.

5. Independent Shore Excursions (Can) Support Smaller Businesses

Nassau's Junkanoo Cultural Museum (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Our tour operator, Chippies Bahamas, was well-known in Nassau but had not yet been accepted into the cruise line shore excursion departments. However, the tour came with a five-bubble rating on Tripadvisor , and past tourists raved about the quality of the tours and the guides.

Independent tours can be good for supporting smaller businesses. By the time a shore excursion gets to be featured aboard a cruise ship, it tends to be operated by a large company or a group of larger companies.

Booking an independent shore excursion helps small local businesses and entrepreneurial residents, while providing a level of authenticity that may be missing from some big-ship excursion offerings.

6. Would I Book an Independent Shore Excursion Again? What I Learned.

Adventure of the Seas alongside in Nassau, Bahamas (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

My experience was a positive one: I loved my tour, the price was right, and I felt I got more out of Nassau than I would have if I’d done a cruise line shore excursion or had just elected to stay on the ship.

While I won’t stop booking cruise line shore excursions (some ports just frankly call for a ship-sponsored tour due to time constraints or tendering procedures ), I will certainly be looking to see what new adventures can be had in port by booking an independent shore excursion – as long as it gets back to the ship in time!

1. day trips to the swimming pigs nassau.

Take one of our Swimming pigs tours ! The Bahamas Swimming pigs are perhaps the most well-known Bahamas attraction heard about worldwide. Surely, you have seen these cute little pigs in the ocean on Instagram before.

The original pigs in the Bahamas are found on Big Major Cay (Pig Island) on Pig Beach. Very few tours will take you to the original spot of the swimming pigs which means they are bringing you to a location where somebody has brought the pigs to an unknown habitat for tourism profit.

To ensure you are taken to the original location, Bahamas Air Tours will fly you to the Staniel Cay airstrip where we will take a short ten-minute boat across the way to Pig Beach. Once there, you will have ample time to play with the Exuma pigs and relax in the sun.

If coming by ferry or speedboat, your time with the pigs will be limited as usually the route via the sea takes over three times longer than the air route.

You can book your day trip from Nassau to Swimming Pigs Bahamas through Bahamas Air Tours today!

8. Bahamas Rock Iguana spotting

Bahamas rock iguanas are nowhere near as populous as they used to be in the Bahamas. Now, there are less than 5,000 on the entire planet which makes them a vulnerable species. Mostly found on the Andros and Exuma Islands, you will most likely have to take a day tour from Nassau in order to see these graceful creatures.

It is still possible to see the reptiles out in the wild, but you must know where to look with guidance from an experienced tour expert.

Scuba Diving and Relaxation: Famous Nassau Shore Excursions

Pastel buildings, rum cake, and turquoise waters await you on Nassau shore excursions. Experience the capital city of the Bahamas in style, whether you relax on its many beaches or take a more active approach and explore the island on foot or underwater.

Start with a guided tour of all the major city sites, like Rawson Square, the historic Parliament Buildings, and the National Art Gallery. Check out the local fish market, Potters Cay, and sample local rum at John Watling's Rum Distillery. On a cruise to the Bahamas , there’s always time for a piña colada.

There are endless opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling on Nassau cruise excursions. You can take a beginner’s scuba tour to learn the basic how-tos, or experienced divers can gear up and head to the island’s famous Rainbow Reef. It’s only a 45-minute boat ride from Nassau Harbor, and this tropical oasis is home to some of the most beautiful coral structures in the world. You can snorkel, scuba dive, or simply swim the crystal waters while visiting from your cruise to Nassau .

Animal lovers will find Nassau shore excursions are perfect for wildlife adventures. Swim with dolphins and meet sea lions at Blue Lagoon Island. It’s an ideal excursion to combine animal experiences with the tropical beauty of the Bahamas. If you want to take things down a notch, let Blue Lagoon Island be your haven. Lounge in a hammock beachside and swim in Caribbean waters without interruption. Families will also enjoy Aquaventure in Nassau, where all ages can enjoy the water park at Atlantis Paradise Island Resort for water slides, tubing, and lazy river floating.

Foodies can choose an intimate culinary option of the Nassau shore excursions available, where you’ll learn how chefs source their fresh seafood, prepare signature dishes, and explore the local markets. Complete your day with a delicious meal of Bahamian classics like deep-fried conch fritters, Johnny cake, and, of course, rum cake for dessert .

Best Bahamas Cruises

C ruises to the Bahamas are filled with sun, soft sands, and the opportunity to dip your toes in a warm and seductive crystal blue sea. The 700-island archipelago is the kind of oasis you dream of when, in my case at least, you're indoors on a cold and dark day in Cleveland. Exploring the islands is tricky by air, but much easier via ship. Bahamas cruises to take right now include quick jaunts from easy-to-get-to Florida ports as well as one-week and longer cruises that explore more deeply. You can sail there in less than a day from Florida (cruises tend to embark in the early evening and hang out at sea until the next morning ashore), which makes it both an easy escape for a quick getaway or somewhere to linger for even more rest and relaxation.

What to expect on a Bahamas cruise

The main places cruise ships visit in the Bahamas are Nassau, the capital city, and some of the islands and beaches that are affiliated with cruise lines, such as Disney's private family wonderland Castaway Cay, off Great Abaco Island. There are small ships that explore further, including to the southern reaches of the archipelago.

Cruise passengers will find opportunities to hike in national parks, enjoy nearly deserted beaches, and explore many small churches-the Bahamas boasts more churches per capita than anywhere else in the world.

In the Bahamian capital of Nassau on New Providence Island, visitors can get a better understanding of the nation's British colonial and West African slave history as well as of the Junkanoo culture and festivals at wonderful museums. Most day visitors, though, are typically focused on water attractions: heading off on diving or snorkeling excursions, boarding party boats with free-flowing rum punch, experiencing the beaches, swimming pools, and waterslides at the Atlantis Bahamas resort on Paradise Island, or trying to catch the big one on fishing charters.

On small ship itineraries, you may stop at San Salvador Island, where Christopher Columbus may or may not have made his first landing in the New World. (Historians quibble on the exact landing spot.) A white cross memorializes the supposed landing spot. Long Island, which stretches some 80 miles, has both rugged and sandy coasts and the natural attraction of Dean's Blue Hole, one of the deepest sinkholes in the world at 663 feet, a place where divers and snorkelers can mingle with turtles and tarpons. The small island of Bimini is known for its clean beaches and rich marine life-hanging out at beach clubs, seeking quiet escapes in the land, and watching for dolphins and other sea creatures are prime activities.

Other cruise destinations include Eleuthera, with its inviting pink sands and protected park areas. In addition to beaches, the 365-island chain known as the Exumas are famous for swimming pigs (though they also live elsewhere in the Bahamas).

Celebrity cruises' "nassau & bimini" itinerary.

  • Best for: Upscale big ship experience

Celebrity Cruises sails to Nassau and Bimini in style, and if time or money is tight, you don't have to invest too much in your Bahamas getaway. You can book, for instance, an easy, breezy four-night trip on the 2,158-passenger Celebrity Summit from under $500 per person. That said, if you splurge on a suite in the Retreat, you'll have your own sundeck with hot tub, enjoy private lounge access, and dine at the exclusive restaurant Luminae, where signature dishes by Celebrity's culinary ambassador, Daniel Boulud, are featured on the rotating menu-such as creamy carrot and ginger velouté and Moroccan chicken tagine with saffron couscous. Spa lovers might want to book the AquaClass staterooms, with complimentary access to a Persian Garden with infrared sauna and sensory showers and exclusive dining at health focused Blu, where the wine list features sustainable and biodynamic wines. While in Bimini, you might try your hand at sport-fishing, a year-round pastime from the island.

Disney Cruise Line's Bahamian Cruise from Fort Lauderdale

  • To book: 5-night Bahamas cruise from Fort Lauderdale on the 2,700-passenger Disney Magic , from $6,299 for four guests
  • Islands: Castaway Cay, Nassau (New Providence), Eleuthera

Disney Cruise Line has ships in the Bahamas year-round, starting with quick three- and four-night sailings from Florida ports. Ever since it first opened 1998, the highlight of any Disney cruise in the Bahamas has been Castaway Cay, a picture-perfect white-sand island paradise, complete with pirate attractions and Disney character appearances. What has Disney fans all atwitter is the opening in summer 2024 of a second exclusive for Disney Bahamas destination, Lighthouse Point, on the island of Eleuthera. There, Disney promises a celebration of Bahamian culture, including Junkanoo parades, characters from Bahamas folklore, and performances by local artists. An accompanying commitment to conservation at Lighthouse Point includes a solar installation that will provide at least 90 percent of the destination's required electricity (Castaway Cay also has a solar installation). Family-friendly attractions abound but grown-ups can also drop the kids off in a supervised activity program and head to the adults-only beach to sip cocktails while lounging in private cabanas.

A seven-night itinerary in December 2023 gets you from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau, Bimini, San Salvador, and Long Island, Bahamas, with the bonus of some additional time built in to enjoy the Hemingway House & Museum and other attractions in Key West, Florida. Optional small group shore excursions in the Bahamas include an "Eco-Marine Safari" on Long Island, that combines small boat exploration of a mangrove channel and sandbars with a visit to see swimming pigs in a quiet cay. With both the cruise line and the Royal at Atlantis on Paradise Island affiliated with Marriott International , there's also a hotel tie-in-you can book a daybed at the resort's chic adults-only pool area, the Cove .

The luxurious 228-passenger Scenic Eclipse features some of the best exploration toys in the industry. An expedition team runs excursions including with two helicopters and a submarine, which will enhance your Bahamas views from both over and under the sea. Or borrow paddleboards and kayaks from the ship's marina for your own solo exploration. A 12-night sailing from Nassau to Bridgetown, Barbados, starts with six days in the Bahamas, before following the yachting crowd south. Stops include Compass Cay in the Exuma Cays, where in the clear water you might see nurse sharks even from the ship. Bird lovers will enjoy a rare visit to the southernmost island in the Bahamas, Great Inagua Island, with its resident population of some 80,000 flamingos. Whiskey lovers will want to check out the ship's collection of more than 110 varieties.

Best for: Low-key luxury

To book: 7-night cruise in April 2025 , from $4,399 per person

Islands: Nassau (New Providence), Staniel Cay, Great Exuma, San Salvador, Salt Cay

You'll have to wait until 2025, but small-ship line SeaDream has an intriguing pair of upcoming round-trip cruises to the Bahamas from tony Palm Beach, Florida, on the 112-passenger SeaDream II . The "Bountiful Bahamas" itinerary lingers in the Exumas and around Long Island, with the opportunity to explore pristine beaches, hang out at beach shack bars, and snorkel in the clear sea. There's also an unusual visit to the uninhabited Bahamas island Salt Cay (also known as Cay Sal), only accessible by boat and some 50 miles from Marathon, Florida. In between kayaking quiet bays, try the yacht's newest attraction, an inflatable slide running from the pool deck into the water. SeaDream prides itself on cuisine and was the first cruise line with a full vegan raw food menu in addition to such indulgences as a signature l'oeuf poule au caviar (egg with caviar), grilled lobster, and filet mignon.

Virgin Voyages' "Fire & Sunset Soirées" cruise

During a beach day at the Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini, private to Virgin guests when their ships visit, enjoy cocktails at the pool or a beach bonfire. Or book an activity such as a watercolor painting class, a "Views-n-Blues Mid-Afternoon Cruise" on a pontoon, an open-air tram tour of the island, or scuba dive with hammerheads. On the ship, partake in dance parties, take advantage of complimentary yoga, meditation sessions, and intense cardio HIIT classes, peruse vinyl selections on sale at the record shop, and get a tattoo or piercing when not indulging in treats at the "Lick Me Till  . . .  Ice Cream" shop. There are also six restaurants onboard, including a highly creative "Test Kitchen" where dishes smoke and sizzle, and a super-fun Korean baarbecue experience, Gunbae, complete with drinking games.

With hundreds of islands to visit, Bahamas cruises are filled with beautiful scenery, mesmerizing marine life, and relaxing beach escapes.
