Known as Guangzhou in the local language, there is much to see in Canton , the third largest city in all of China, the capital of its province and one of the most advanced cities you’ll find in the country. Canton has a combination of modern elements and an ancient cultural heritage that make it a must-see on any trip to China.

If you decide to wander through its streets, you’ll find skyscrapers that light up the city and all sorts of technological attractions, but also a special attention to its ancient tradition, with buildings such as the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees that defy the passage of time over centuries of history. What are the best places to see in Canton?

1. The Tower of Canton

One of the most iconic (and practically unmissable if you walk around the city at night) buildings to see in Canton is the Canton Tower , a gigantic telecommunications tower that is also the tallest tower in all of China.

This Canton icon is located in the Zhuhai district and its 600-metre height takes the breath away from anyone who witnesses its majesty. And, as we mentioned, it is even more impressive at night, as it is fully illuminated, leaving a multicoloured trail that sticks in your memory.

And it’s no less impressive inside, with a range of entertainment options on the premises. One of the most striking and one that we definitely recommend you try if you like strong emotions is the SkyDrop , a free fall attraction over 400 metres high . It’s certainly not for everyone, but it’s one of the best things to do in Canton. And of course, don’t forget to climb the tower’s impressive observation deck, from where you can enjoy one of the best views in China.

2. The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees

In the middle of Liurong Street is one of the must-see monuments in Canton, a Buddhist temple that was built more than 1,400 years ago , during the Ling Dynasty. It has stood the test of time like no other monument in the city, making it a must-see on your tour of Canton.

It’s name comes after the six Banyan trees that once stood in its grounds and have appeared in Chinese cultural narrative and lyrics over the years. It is a very important part of the city’s cultural heritage, where the past and present come together to provide a sensory spectacle.

After more than a millennium of history, in 1907, another monument was built called the Flower Pagoda, a construction of Buddhist influence, like the rest of the site, which is undoubtedly one of the fundamental pieces of the whole enclave. Best of all, as majestic as the entire site is, admission is completely free, which makes this stop even more of a must on your list of things to see in Canton.

3. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Another historical point of interest to see on your tour of Canton is the splendorous Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. The building sits close to Yuexiu Hill and serves to honour the memory of one of the founding fathers of modern-era China.

The monument has the bearing that characterises the importance of the figure of Sun Yat-sen, a figure who embodies the revolution that took place in China in the early 20th century in this country. The space is gigantic and the gardens surrounding the memorial are a natural wonder to see.

4. The Temple of the Chen family

The Chen family is considered one of the most important in modern Chinese history and the temple was built over a century ago during the Qing dynasty by Emperor Gaungxu. Its style is frankly traditional, but the detail and care that goes into the building makes it difficult to miss on any visit.

The space that makes up the complex is enormous, with almost twenty thousand square metres, as well as a main building and several halls that complement it. Inside the main building you can visit the Museum of Folk Arts and Crafts, a museum that we recommend you visit if you happen to be on the premises.

5. The Isle of Shamian

If you long for Europe when you visit, don’t worry because in Canton there is a place that will transport you from East to West in a few moments. Shamian Island is a small island redoubt to see in Canton, where the European influence is in the air.

This white sand island is located in the Liwan district, where all manner of European-influenced monuments and architectural complexes are a striking contrast to the rest of the city of Canton.

There’s a huge amount to see in Canton, so 2 days is really not enough time to explore it all. Still, we’ve put together a few tips to make it easier for you to choose what to do.

Of course, we can’t recommend that you start your trip to Canton with a visit to the Canton Tower. We also recommend a visit to the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial, two monuments with a lot of history to tell in Canton.

If you want to get away from the more typical, you can visit Shamian Island and the Sacred Heart Cathedral, two buildings that are closer to the European influence you’re more used to, but are certainly surprising to see in the middle of Canton.

Where and what to eat in Canton?

Canton’s cuisine is renowned in many parts of the world and is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of travelling to a region like this. That’s why we’ve prepared a recommendation of some places where you can enjoy it:

There are a number of flights available from cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, with flights in June costing from €1000 and upwards for a return trip. Just bear in mind that you will have at least one stopover on your journey or more, depending on availability and what you pay.

Canton has a very efficient public transport system that will allow you to get around the city without any problems. There is a metro system as well as light rail, buses (usually crowded) and taxi services. In general, we recommend that you take the metro for getting around the city, especially if your stay is not going to be particularly long.

Canton’s rainy season is particularly hot and clouds abound in the sky. The temperature is not particularly cold at any time of the year, averaging between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius.

The best months to travel to Canton are between May and September, when temperatures are mild and balanced. However, if you want to enjoy better weather and avoid the rain, travel between July and September.

2. Ascend Canton Tower

Canton Tower is a modern landmark located in Guangzhou CBD. Tourists like going to the top of the tower because it is the tallest structure in Guangzhou, offering a wonderful bird's-eye view of the city. At night, it lights up the Pearl River and Zhujiang New Town area with its rainbow of lights.

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is an ancient architectural complex, which has 19 buildings with nine halls and six courtyards that are connected in a symmetrical pattern. It was established by members of the large Chen clan who were very influential in southern China in the late 1800s.

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall has a very traditional look to it, and it is huge. It is interesting that the structure was built in such a traditional manner at a time when building going up in commercial cities in the south often had a Western architectural style.

6. Visit Zhujiang New Town

Zhujiang New Town is the CBD of Guangzhou and its modern showcase. Also called Tianhe CBD, the area is only 6 square kilometers in size but it has the most skyscrapers at a height of over 300 meters in China. Over 140 of the world's top 500 companies have set their headquarters or agencies there.

7. Visit the Sacred Heart Cathedral

8. Visit the Statue of Five Goats in Yuexiu Park

Guangzhou is called the City of Goats. This is not because the city has many goats but because of the legend of five goats that brought good harvests and wealth to ancient Guangzhou city. Today, the statue of the five goats is in Yuexiu Park and has become the city's symbol.

Guangzhou, glittering bastion of trade sprung from the fertile grounds of the Pearl River Delta, has welcomed travelers since ancient times when it was a port on the maritime Silk Road. This city, where dim sum was said to have been born to nourish weary merchants, now hosts the Canton Fair each year, continuing its legacy of mercantilism, and influence around the world. Modern yet ancient, bustling yet serene—perhaps its paradoxes are what led the founder of Zen Buddhism to teach and reside here centuries ago. Buzzing with an entrepreneurial spirit, it brings the curious and ambitious to its shores.

Hike Baiyun (White Cloud) Mountain

Walk up the crisscross of forest paths and gullies, connecting the 30 peaks of this 1,200-foot-tall mountain. Paths cover the entire peak, giving hikers plenty of trails to explore, and for those uninclined or unable to venture up, panoramic views of the city and Pearl River can still be enjoyed via the cable car. Vendors sell hats and water along the trails. Go after a rainstorm, to marvel at its namesake: the ring of clouds encircling the mountain.

Eat Dim Sum

To experience Guangzhou fully, dim sum must be eaten. This traditional Cantonese brunch practice was birthed in Guangdong province, and Guangzhou offers myriad options for it—everything from the pricier (such as 广州酒家 Guanzhou Restaurant) to the more economic ( 丘大6仔记 Qiu Da 6 ). Each dish arrives on a small plate or inside a steamer basket.  Shrimp dumplings, taro cake, and barbeque pork buns are just a few of the dishes on most menus.

Hear Live Original Music at a Live House

Experience the South China original music scene by going to a live house—venues known to showcase live original music, indie festivals, and other art forms. Head to SDlivehouse to hear bands from China, as well international acts as they take its neon stage, performing everything from synthpop to math rock. Buy Traditional Chinese Medicine at Qing Ping Market

One of the most famous markets in Guangzhou, Qing Ping, consists of multiple markets, including the Chinese medicine market, agricultural products market, and aquatic products market. Explore Abstract Architecture at the Guangzhou Opera House

Looking like a giant glowing, beautiful paper boat, the Guangzhou Opera House sits on the shore of the Pearl River. Concerts, dances, and performance art happen year-round here. If you can’t make a show, you can still come to see its deconstructivism style, designed by Zaha Hadid to resemble an eroded riverbed. In addition to hosting symphonies and experimental theatre, it houses a library, reflecting pool, several performance halls, and a black box theatre. Spiraled paths connect different floors and parts of the complex in a beautiful, intricate array of granite and glass.

Cuddle at a Cat Cafe

Cat cafes have popped up all over Guangzhou, allowing you to pet cats and sip coffee at the same time. Cats are not incentivized or trained to interact with customers, so you’ll have to get creative if they don’t seem interested in you. Some cafes, like Release Pressure Cat Coffee, require a minimum purchase of a drink while others, like Galaxy Cat, simply charge a base entrance fee. Galaxy cat also hosts board games and music nights and can be reached by taking the metro lines 3 or APM to the Canton Tower station.

Cast Off on a Pearl River Night Cruise

Glide down the lifeline of the delta, the Pearl River, and see the Guangzhou skyline ablaze in rainbow lights. Bridges, buildings, and ferry boats all illuminate the river for kilometers and cruises leave nightly from Dashatou Wharf. Take pictures from the deck with the city’s behemoth landmarks, like the Canton Tower and White Goose Pool. Tickets can be purchased at the wharf beforehand and cruises range from one to three hours.

Fall Off Canton Tower

Experiences the highest free-fall drop in the world (1,500 feet), the Sky Drop. Perched on Canton Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world, you can strap in and take off, or stick with the observation deck or the bubble tram options if you want the views but fewer thrills.

Experience Little Africa's Transplant Community

Head over to the Xiaobei neighborhood, known locally as "Little Africa," to find the largest African community in China. Migration of Africans to Guangzhou began in the 1990s when traders came to ship goods back home to places like Ghana, Senegal, and Nigeria, and make a profit from being the middle man. Now a swirl of pan-African culture pulses here. Eat jollof rice and steamed fish at the African Pot and hear a plethora of African languages mixed with Chinese while shopping for Somali-style dresses.

Observe Buddhist Rituals at Guangxiao (Bright Filial Piety) Temple

Many pilgrims of Zen Buddhism venture to Guangxiao, the oldest and largest Buddhist temple in Guangzhou. Monks and nuns walk across the large courtyard, offering prayers and burning incense. The oldest building, Mahavira hall was built in 401 B.C.E. and architecture from the Tang, Song, and Qing Dynasties can all be seen throughout its squat buildings and sweeping eaves. Listen to Cantonese Opera at Liwan Park

Cantonese opera merges not only theater and singing, but also martial arts, acrobatics, and those funky costumes with massive sleeves. All plays are based on Chinese history or myths and depict character types specific to Cantonese opera, such as the painted face hero or the acrobatic clown. The venue stands next to the lake and is free of charge. Take a picnic lunch before and rent a paddleboat to enjoy the water after the show.

Belt Out Songs at a KTV

Guangzhou contains hundreds (if not more) karaoke bars. Known as KTVs, go here to rent a private room and sing songs in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese to your heart’s content. Selections range from Chinese pop to '90s hip-hop. Go with friends, order giant fruit plates, beer, and baijiu (a popular liquor made from sorghum). The more people you go with, the more ridiculous and fun it is!

Things to do in Guangzhou: 7 amazing places to visit

Guangzhou ( Canton ) is the capital of Guangdong province and the 3 rd. largest metropolis in China . The city is more than 2,000 years old. Since its beginnings, the city has been known as a trading zone, standing out for being the main port of maritime Silk Road.

Important historical events took place in Guangzhou, such as the Opium Wars (19th century) and the founding of the Chinese Republic (early 20 th century).

Like any big city, it has a lot to offer to its visitors. Despite being worldwide known as Canton Fair’s headquarters, the largest trade fair in China, Guangzhou also has cultural, historical, and natural tourist attractions.

In this article, we present to you 7 must-see places in Guangzhou. Check it out!

1. Yuntai Garden

Yuntai Garden is the pearl of Guangzhou. It is a 120,000 m 2 flower park, located at the southern entrance to Baiyun Mountain Complex. Opened in 1995, the place is huge, making it very difficult to enjoy everything the park has to offer.

There are more than 200 different types of flowers to appreciate. But, it’s not just flowers! The park has also beautiful lakes, gardens, sculptures, Roman columns, and even Dutch windmills and houses.

On the day we visited it, exhibitions and arrangements for the Chinese New Year’s Celebration were being prepared. Right at the entrance, there was a beautiful staircase with many designs and colors, which, unfortunately, was closed for visitors at that moment.

Yuntai Garden is a place to stay in contact with nature, a place for relaxation and contemplation in Guangzhou. It is great for walks and for photography sessions. Tourists usually visit Yuntai Garden along with Baiyun Mountain.

At Yuntai Garden, the following areas stand out:

• Roman Collonade: beautiful Roman columns on the banks of a lake. In front of these columns, one can find some water sprinklers.
• Rose Garden: a 1,500-square-meter garden with more than 100 species of roses in different sizes and shapes.
• Glass Green House: a 1,200 m 2 glass greenhouse used especially for cultivating orchids and cactuses.
• Ecological Valley: a 130,000-square-meter natural valley. It’s a new area with mountains, forests, a lake, fishes, birds, and pavilions that create an ecological environment. Unfortunately, the ecological valley was closed at the time we visited it.

The ticket costs 10 yuans and the garden is open from 8 am to 5 pm. The best time to visit Yuntai Garden is in the spring or summer when flowers are glowing.

Unfortunately, there is no metro station nearby. It’s possible to take buses n. 223, 218, 199, 179, and 175. In our case, we stayed for a long time at a bus stop and the bus didn’t arrive. So we decided to call a car with the Didi Greater China app.

2. Baiyun Mountain

Baiyun Mountain ( Baiyunshan – 白云 山), also called White Cloud Mountain, has been a point of interest since the most remote times (200 BC). The mountain is believed to be the protector of the city of Guangzhou. The name Baiyun (白云) means “White Cloud” in Mandarin. Shan (山) means mountain. The origin of this name is due to the formation of a crown of clouds around the mountain, especially after the rain.

Located at more than 1,300 ft. of altitude, the mountain is a huge space with several peaks. “Moxing Summit” is the highest peak of all. The mountain is surrounded by forest, that’s why it is also called the “City’s Lungs”.

The place is ideal for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and want to be in contact with nature. There are several attractions in the mountain that include cultural sites, temples, restaurants, viewpoints, tea houses, and, also, kid’s attractions.

• Hint: in some references made to Baiyun Mountain, people also include the attractions in its lowest part, such as Yuntai Garden and Luhu Park.

To get there, the best way is to take the cable car, whose entrance is next to Yuntai Garden. The ticket costs 25 yuan to go up and 20 yuan to go down. The cable car takes you to the Mountain top Square where you can find viewpoints, cafes, and snack bars.

But, as I said, the mountain area is huge.

Get ready to walk uphill to discover the other parts of the mountain. What I recommend you is to take one of those electric cars that operate on pre-defined routes.

Guangzhou Steles

I walked along a route called Jiulongquan to a place known as “Guangzhou Steles” or “Guangzhou Forest of Stone Tablets” (Jiulongquan is, by the way, the fastest way to reach the “Moxing Summit” , but be prepared to walk).

After going through a portal and a building, you can climb several stairs, passing some of these stone boards with Chinese poets and calligraphers works. There are viewpoints on several levels, but the views are not so good.

There are so many attractions in the Baiyun mountain region, that I think it is worth staying a full day just there. One can visit the following attractions in the high and low parts of the mountain: Luhu Park, Yuntai Garden, Moxing Summit, Sculpture Park, Yunxi Ecological Park, Baiyun Songtao, among others.

3. Shamian Island

Shamian means “sandy surface” in Chinese. It is not an island, but a sandbar in the Pearl River. It became a strategic place of defense during the Opium Wars, but its fortifications were taken by the British.

After the Opium Wars, Shamian was granted to Britain and France (1859-1943). Britain got 4/5 of the area, in the west, and France got 1/5, in the east.

During the concession, the foreign powers dug an artificial river, turning Shamian an island. Boardwalks and several European-style buildings were built, including churches and foreign diplomatic representations. Companies from several countries have settled in mansions by the waterfront. Two bridges connected Shamian with the mainland: the Bridge of England and the French bridge. In the end, the island acquired its current configuration due to European colonization.

Currently, the elliptical-shaped island (3,000 ft x 1,000 ft) is an excellent place to escape the bustle of the metropolis, take a walk, or simply go back in time. There are practically no cars driving on the island. Nowadays, you can find hotels, restaurants, and cafes there. Central avenue stands out. It’s a wide boulevard with beautiful gardens and fountains. Everything well maintained!

Bronze statues are scattered throughout the island, depicting the way of life in the colonial era. Many visitors stop to take pictures. Not just that!

At the waterfront, we were delighted with a Chinese group dancing and having fun on the banks of the Pearl River.

To get to Shamian Island, you can get off at Huangsha subway station (lines 1 or 6) and take exit F. Then, cross a footbridge over the canal to reach the Island.

4. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall

Sun Yat-Sen (1866-1925) was a Chinese doctor, philosopher, and politician. Considered the Father of the Chinese Republic, he is one of the few political leaders revered both in Taiwan and in Mainland China. By the way, Sun Yat-Sen was also known as Zhongshan.

He was in exile several times and participated in several uprisings against the Qing dynasty. Guangzhou was used as a base for one of these uprisings. With the Xinhai revolution, which culminated in the emperor’s abdication, he was chosen as the first provisional President of the Republic of China. However, the country was politically fragmented. The unification only took place under the leadership of Chiang Kai-Shek in 1927. Unfortunately, he did not survive to see his country unified.

Sun Yat-Sen received honors in China and abroad. Its mausoleum, for example, is in Nanjing, China’s former capital. The city of Zhongshan, also in Guangdong province, was named after him. Likewise, in several Chinese cities, there is Zhongshan Street (Zhongshan Lu). As I told you before, Sun Yat-Sen was also called Sun Zhongshan .

In Guangzhou, you will find the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, built in the former Government Headquarters (1912-1925). The construction took place from 1929 to 1931. The memorial has 62,000 m 2 . The outdoor area is very beautiful and has well-kept gardens.

The main building is an octagonal-shaped construction with 6,600 square meters.  In front of the building, an 18-foot bronze statue of Sun Yat-Sen stands out, so as the 8 red pillars that support the structure.

Just above the facade, 4 Chinese characters convey a message written by Sun Yat-Sen himself. “Tian Xia Wei Gong” means “the world belongs to everyone”, in contrast to the imperial dynasty’s view, whose motto was “All under heaven”.

In the main building, there are 2 floors accessible to visitors with panels that tell the story of Sun Yat-Sen and the construction of the memorial. In the center, a beautiful auditorium holds up to 3,240 people. An octagonal dome also draws attention to anyone there. When we visited, in January 2020, we were able to observe some rehearsals for the Chinese New Year festivities.

Admission is 10 yuan for the exhibition inside the building. In the external areas, the visitor can walk for free.

To get to the Memorial, just get off at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall subway station and take exit D.

5. Zhujiang New Town

Zhujiang New Town is Guangzhou’s new CBD, but it also contains a residential area. It is an area of ​​6.44 km 2 that has been redeveloped, especially for the Asian Games of 2010. It is currently home to the largest concentration of luxury hotels and commercial offices in Guangzhou. Consulates of the United States and Australia have also settled there.

In the central area, there is a 1.5 km long “open plaza”. In fact, there are 5 open squares linked from north to south until the Haixinsha Island. The “open plaza” includes underground shopping centers and it is surrounded by modern and imposing buildings.

Among these buildings, the Guangzhou Library stands out. It is huge, with 9 floors, all equipped with computers. It was amazing to see how many people were studying there.

Other very important buildings in Zhujiang New Town are the Guangdong Museum, the Guangzhou Opera, the IFC Tower, and the Pearl River Tower.

Southwards, you can see, on the other side of the Pearl River, the also imposing and famous Canton Tower.

There are two options for getting to Zhujiang New Town: by subway, alighting at Zhujiang New Town station (line 3), and by people mover, a special line of autonomous trains that operate there.

6. Canton Tower

Canton Tower is a 600-meter tower located in Haizhu district, on the banks of the Pearl River. It is the Guangzhou postcard. It is the second-largest TV tower in China and the 4 th largest in the world. The tower contains 112 floors. It was also built for the 2010 Asian Games.

The tower has a hyperboloid shape and the design was made by Dutch architect Mark Hemel, inspired by the hips of a woman who turns to look back.

At night, the tower is all lit up and sometimes carries messages.

Inside the Tower, there are restaurants, entertainment, and viewing platforms.

Two attractions in the Canton Tower stand out: the Bubble Tram and the Sky Drop. The Bubble Tram is a set of crystal cabins that walk along a track, revolving around the top of the tower. Sky Drop, in turn, is a free fall of 30 meters.

The tower ticket admission costs 150 yuan. The price of Sky Drop and Bubble Tram is 180 yuan each. To get there, I recommend taking the subway and getting off at Canton Tower East Station (line 3).

7. Beijing Lu (Beijing Road)

“Beijing Lu” (or Beijing Street) is a shopping street located in Guangzhou’s Yiexiu district. For the most part, it is a pedestrian street. On a normal day, 400,000 people visit Beijing Lu.

People also call “Beijing Lu” the entire shopping area around the street. There, you will find a wide variety of shopping malls, street stores, restaurants, and street vendors. Besides shopping, tourists often visit the Buddhist temples in the area.

There are many counterfeit products in the area, but there you will also find genuine products and souvenir shops. In the simplest stalls and stores, it is important to bargain. Negotiate for 1/3 of the price they first offered you.

Among the malls, the Metro Mall stands out, where you can buy cheap clothes on the 1st floor. However, you should be aware that the sizes are not perfectly suited to the western biotype. There are also several department stores in the region, such as GrandBuy, Xindaxin, Mayflower, Daxian, and Ginza. A street shop I recommend there is Miniso, where you can find good and cheap home products.

• Something that bothers the visitor is the approach of some street vendors. They want to sell watches, cleaning sprays, and other trinkets. Be assertive: say no! And never let them bring you to their stores.

Beijing Lu has a long history. In the central area of ​​the street, the visitor can observe archaeological excavation works, covered by glass, with remnants dating from the Ming dynasty (between 1368 and 1644).

To get to Beijing Road, take the subway and get off at Gongyuanqian station (lines 1 or 2) and take exits C or D. You can also alight at Beijing Road station (line 6) and take exit B.

As one of the world's most ancient civilizations, China also offers wonderful opportunities to explore astounding relics from its millennia of history.

3. Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan

One of China's most famous treks, this 22km (14-mile)  hiking trail winds through a World Heritage-listed gorge in Yunnan that is one of Asia's most striking landscapes. Framed by spectacular snow-capped mountains and the scenic Jinshajiang River, the natural monument plunges to depths of 3900m (12,795ft), making it one of the deepest gorges in the world.

4. Le Shan, Sichuan

Standing at the confluence of two rivers, the monumental 1200-year old Buddha image  at Le Shan is carved directly into the rock face. World Heritage–listed, the extraordinary monument stands 71m (233ft) tall and 28m (92ft) wide, making it the largest ancient Buddha in the world. Whether you're spiritually included or not, coming face to face with this sculpture is quite a moving experience.

5. Shanghai

Glitzy, elegant, historic and cosmopolitan: everything you've heard about Shanghai is true. Just take a stroll through the French Concession or along the Bund , and you'll see for yourself. From the grand display of 1920s architecture to the city's sophisticated restaurants and rooftop bars to the sci-fi neon-lit skyscrapers across the bay, Shanghai is the past and future China brought to vivid life.

6. The Great Wall

Snaking through China's majestic mountainous terrain, the spectacular  Great Wall is the nation's most iconic landmark. Built over two millennia, this awe-inspiring, 21,196km-long (13,170-mile-long) fortification is a true marvel of human accomplishment. In fact, it's not one wall but many, stretching from the east coast all the way to the far western desert. The most easily accessible stretches can be reached by car from Beijing.

With its charming teahouses, lively nightlife and fiery Sichuan food, Chengdu is one of China's most popular cities for travelers. But most folk visit here for one reason: pandas. And while you'd be very lucky to spot one in the wild, sightings are guaranteed at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base . Other draws of this inland regional capital include temples, pavilions and museums devoted to the culture of the ancient Shu kingdom.

8. Karst peaks, Guilin

Spanning the distance from Guilin to Yangshou , the picture-perfect karst-limestone peaks offer an extraordinary backdrop to the scenic Li River and rice paddies. Grab a bicycle or board a raft to tour this beautiful countryside, passing farmers and water buffalo along the way.

9. Guangzhou

This vibrant and dynamic  megacity is one of China's most fascinating hubs. You'll find an intriguing mix of old and new in a city where skyscrapers nudge the clouds, and monks shuffle around 1500-year-old Buddhist temples. But it's the Cantonese cuisine that lures in many, with some of the finest dim sum in all of China.

10. Longji Rice Terraces, Guangxi

You'll find rice paddies all over China – but few are as spectacular as the ones in Longji , built against a backdrop of lush mountains. Walks here lead to viewpoints overlooking sculpted, iridescent green terraces with swirling patterns resembling the contours of a giant thumbprint.

11. Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an

Unearthed in Xi'an by unsuspecting rural workers in 1974, this enigmatic army of life-sized statues remains of the world's most remarkable archaeological finds. Dating back 2200 years, they were built to protect the underground tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Needless to say, meeting the warriors face to face is an experience you'll never forget.

12. Xi'an

In a country where cities seemingly spring up overnight, this is one of the oldest and grandest. Known to most for its extraordinary Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an is also remarkable in its own right – notably as the beginning of the Silk Road, a trade route with a legacy that remains intact within its atmospheric Muslim Quarter .

13. Zhangjiajie

Rising dramatically from the subtropical forests of northwest Hunan , the pinnacle rock formations of  Zhangjiajie inspired the scenery in the film Avatar (2009). Take it all in as you walk over a vertiginous glass-bottom suspension bridge floating 300m (984ft) above ground. If that's not daring enough, you can bungee jump off it, too.

14. Forbidden City, Beijing

Among China's imperial sights, none can compare in size, grandeur or mystique to Beijing's Forbidden City . Built between 1406 and 1420, this sprawling palace was off-limits for 500 years until the overthrow of the last Qing emperor in 1911. Today, it's very much open to the public, attracting nearly 20 million visitors each year. Despite the crowds, its massive scale remains humbling.

Canton Tower - A Must See Landmark in Guangzhou

Canton Tower, also known as the Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower, is the iconic tower and landmark of Guangzhou. With the height of 600 meters, it is the tallest TV tower of China and the third tallest TV tower in the world.

Canton Tower, World Third Tallest TV Tower

Canton Tower, also known as the Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower , is the iconic tower and landmark of Guangzhou. With the height of 600 meters , it is the tallest TV tower of China and the third tallest TV tower in the world . If there is only one place to go in Guangzhou , Canton Tower has to be at the top of the list. Canton Tower is also famous for its "Slim Waist" which is an architectural marvel.

Canton Tower was constructed by Guangzhou New Television Tower Group. During the process of the construction, the engineer group handled the technical problem led by the design of such slim waist and finished an outstanding work. The tower finally gained good reputation for the ability of resisting 7.8-magnitude earthquakes and the useful life of over 100 years.

As a TV tower, Canton Tower is used for transmitting the TV signal and Frequency Modulation radio signal and microwave signal. Meanwhile, Canton Tower also functions as a sightseeing place. You could have a bird’s eye view of the whole city from the Observation Deck with 448 meters high. At night, the stunning beauty of the light show on the tower must give you deep impression when you look at it from outside. If you are brave enough, the world's longest spiral staircase will give you an opportunity to walk from the height of 168 meters to 334.4 meters, ride the world’s highest Ferris wheel and experience the world’s highest sky drop game which has been listed in Guinness World Records with the name of “Highest Thrill Ride”. Canton Tower Designing Highlights

“slim waist” of canton tower.

The tower is also known by its local nickname - “Xiao Man Yao” which refers to the slim waist of a famous lady - Xiao Man during the reign of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). Xiao Man was appreciated for her slim waist and the tower is appreciated for a twisted and tight appearance. Therefore, Canton Tower has this nickname.

How can Canton Tower have such a “female waist”? The form, volume and structure of the tower are generated by two ellipses, one at foundation level and the other at a horizontal plane. These two ellipses are rotated relative to another. The tightening caused by the rotation between the two ellipses forms a "waist" and a densification of material halfway up the tower.

In local people’s eyes, Canton Tower is like a beautiful female with slim waist standing on the bank of the Pearl River. They are proud of this tower, and nearly everyone talking with you would ask if you have already been to Canton Tower.

Architectural Lighting Design

During night in a city, light can be the king. At night, the tower glows and emits light , shinning the night of Guangzhou. Every node in the lighting design is individually controllable so that animations and colour changes across the entire height of the tower . The light show is from 330,000 multi-color LEDs that ring the building. With the adoption of LED technology and as all fixtures are located on the structure itself, the lighting scheme consumes only 15% of the allowed maximum for façade lighting, which totally conforms to the concept of low-carbon society. Canton Tower is best to visit just before dusk. You will see the tower and surrounding buildings transforming into a theatre of lights.

What to Do in Canton Tower

As a multifunctional tower, Canton Tower provides following types of amusement projects which can give you breathtaking feelings.

Canton Tower Observation Deck (488m)

Canton Tower Observation Deck, with the height of 488 meters, is the world’s highest outdoor observation deck . The deck is the highest point that tourists can arrive in Canton Tower. From the deck, you could get a great 360 degree view of the whole city. The gross area of this deck is 177 square meters, in which the part of outdoors is 122 square meters and the part of indoors is 55 square meters.

Canton Tower is equipped of advanced control system, lightning proximity warning system and anemograph, by which its safety conditions can be monitored all the time. As a result, the deck has a high level of safety although this deck is so tall.

The deck is the best place to take photos of the whole city , especially the Pearl River. If you take photos here, you will also have the best view of sun, moon and starry sky.

Canton Tower Bubble Tram

“If you thought the London Eye was a stomach-churning experience, then look away now”. The Daily Mail’s saying gave a perfect description of Canton Tower Bubble Tram. Canton Tower Bubble Tram, with the height of 460 meters, is the world’s highest Ferris wheel , which was put into use in 2011. Unlike other Ferris wheels, it has a 15-degree incline and can resist 8-magnitude earthquakes and Beaufort scale 12 typhoons. Although it's described as a Ferris, its passenger cars are not suspended from the rim of a wheel in the traditional fashion and the track is horizontal.

The Ferris wheel has 16 transparent 'crystal' pods taking about 20 minutes to go round the elliptical track constructing around the edge of the tower’s roof. Every capsule can hold 4 to 6 passengers. Tourists could have the overall view of the whole city from any direction.

Experiencing the bubble tram is not the only choice, and you can also walk or sit on the steps near the tram, which is called “Outdoor Observation Deck at 460m” . You could see some people who take beautiful wedding photos here.

Canton Tower Sky Drop

Canton Tower Sky Drop, with the height of 455 meters, is the world’s highest sky drop game . There are two kinds of mega drop on the tower, by which you could enjoy the traditional way of ‘sitting’ and the novel way of ‘jumping’. The standing jump vehicle on the east-facing side of the mast sits four, as does the standard sitting jump vehicle facing west. The lift speed (upwards) is 3.7 m/s (11.28 ft/s), while the free fall speed is 16 m/s (48.77 ft/s).

In 2012, it is listed in the Guinness World Records with the name of “Highest Thrill Ride” and is the first and the only one who gets this fame. If you are thrill-seeker, you could try to play this game. Don’t forget to smile while experience it, haha.

Canton Tower Spider Walk

The 1,000-meter-long Spider Walk locates at the 168-meter to 334.4-meter height of Canton Tower, with a transparent floor made up of 90 pieces of glasses. It is the world's longest spiral staircase —a dizzying 32-story hike—up one of the world's tallest structures. The “Spider Walk” begins on the 32nd story of the Canton Tower, and takes you to the 1000 meters long spiral staircase around the waist of the tower. The stairs may make you dizzy with the double-glass set into the floor, on which you will truly feel the breathtaking height. Walking on the longest spiral stairs, you will feel that you are walking on the cobweb. Come here, your childhood dream of being a “Spider Man” will come true. At night, your way is illuminated, because of the constantly shifting light-show of Canton Tower. During a clear day, you will have the best views of the Pearl River.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (10 minutes walking distance) is the most used place for gathering or performance in Guangzhou. It was built during 1929~1931 in memory of the great revolutionist Sun Yat-sen. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall itself is a traditional Chinese building with significant outlooks and delicate interior designs. At every corner, you will find the spectacular style of Chinese architecture.

With a deep exploration of Ming Dynasty Wall, Zhenhai Tower, and Sun Yat-sen Monument, you will have a deep impression about Yuexiu Park.

Temple of the Six Banyan Trees (About 2km), also Liurong Temple, is one of the best four Buddhist temples in Guangzhou with about 1500 years’ history. Its Flower Pagoda is the oldest landmark of Guangzhou City.

Where Is Canton Tower

Canton Tower is located at No. 222 Yuejiang West Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China. Canton Tower is near metro station. You can take the metro line 3 or APM (Zhujiang New Town Automated People Mover System) to take off at the Canton Tower metro station. Then walk for no more than 500 meters, you will see Canton Tower. As it is in the downtown area, so you can easily arrive there by bus, subway or taxi.

Canton Tower Opening Hours

1. The rotating restaurants in the tower are definitely pricey, but it can be fun to dine with a view, on a clear day. You're most likely to get a great view just after a heavy rain.

2.It is advised to go there in a clear day, so you will get a great view of the city. It would be best to go at dusk, so that you could watch the tower gradually transforming to colorful. Meanwhile, you could also have a good look at the whole city.

3.The time for touring is divided by every 2 hours, and the time for entering the tower is as following: 09:30, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 20:00 and so on. You can only enter the tower as the ticket you buy.
