New Mississippi river cruises will include after-hours visit to Graceland

Elvis fans, your ship has come in.

River cruise giant Viking this week announced plans for new Mississippi River sailings that feature a rare treat for Elvis Presley fans: A private, after-hours tour of Graceland.

Scheduled for December 2022, the seven-night Mississippi Holiday Season sailings will bring an entire evening of special access to the king of rock and roll's Memphis home including a private exploration of his mansion and private access to Elvis Presley's Memphis, the Elvis-themed entertainment and exhibit complex located just behind the mansion.

The evening will be capped by a private dinner at the Presley Motors Automobile Museum, which is part of Elvis Presley's Memphis, and a gospel choir performance.

The sailings will take place on the new, 386-passenger river ship that Viking is building for Mississippi River cruises, Viking Mississippi. They'll be one-way trips between Memphis and New Orleans that include two nights and three days in Memphis and day stops in Vicksburg and Natchez, Mississippi; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Scheduled to debut in August 2022, Viking Mississippi will be Viking's first vessel in North America. Currently under construction at a shipyard in Louisiana, it'll be significantly bigger than the typical Viking river ship with five passenger decks.

It'll also be a modern-style vessel, featuring the same streamlined Scandinavian design that's found on Viking's existing ships in other regions of the world. That'll make it different than many river cruise vessels on the Mississippi River, which often have a traditional steamboat design with big paddlewheels, fluted stacks and gingerbread-ornamented wheelhouses.

Mississippi River cruising has been making a comeback over the past decade after years of decline. Connecticut-based American Cruise Lines entered the Mississippi River cruise market in 2012 with one vessel and now has four on the river. Two are modern in design and two are traditional paddlewheelers. The company is in the midst of adding more.

The Indiana-based American Queen Steamboat Company has added two traditional Mississippi River paddlewheelers to its fleet since 2017, bringing its total to three. The company operates the best-known Mississippi River vessel, the American Queen.

Viking currently dominates the market for river cruises in Europe aimed at North Americans. It's also a significant player in river cruises in Asia and on the Nile in Egypt. But it's never offered voyages on rivers in North America — the home to the majority of its customers.

The company operates more than 70 river vessels across the globe and in recent years also has begun adding ocean ships.

Viking currently has four departures of the new holiday sailings planned, on Dec. 10, 17, 24 and 31 of 2022. Fares for the trips start at $3,999 per person, based on double occupancy.

In keeping with Viking's no-nickel-and-diming philosophy, fares include a complimentary shore excursion in every port as well as all onboard meals; port charges and taxes; beer and wine with lunch and dinner; and onboard WiFi access.

For those curious about Viking's new Mississippi cruises, the line plans a week of live-streamed television episodes about Viking Mississippi and the destinations it will visit starting on Monday at its online streaming site, Viking.TV . The episodes will include a Tuesday briefing on the ship's design and inspiration from Viking ship designer Richard Riveire.

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.

Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. Most vessels that feature riverboat gambling are now moored, offering sports betting, table games, entertainment, live music and dancing while tethered to shore.

The downtown area of the attractive city of Charleston is a step back in time. Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee and known as the Blues City. It has many attractions including Elvis Presley’s Graceland with its infamous décor and the Peabody Memphis, a legendary hotel famous for its Peabody Ducks which march to and from the Grand Lobby. Other highlights include Sun Studio where Jonny Cash, Roy Orbison and Elvis recorded music and the National Civil Rights Museum housed in the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King was assassinated.

New Orleans

With its atmospheric French Quarter, New Orleans, also known as the 'Big Easy', is situated on the Mississippi River. It's possible to explore this small city via the historic streetcars, taking in the French Quarter ' Royal Street for shops and the balconied Galliers House, the Jazz Historical Park and French Market. Pitot House is a typical Creole Plantation House on Moss Street, and paddlewheel steamboat trips can be taken from the harbour.

Oak Alley is situated between the historic cities of new Orleans and Baton Rouge. It has been called the Grand Dame of the Great River Road. A canopy of giant oak trees forms an impressive avenue leading to this classic antebellum home which has been restored to its 19th-century glory.

The graceful town of Savannah has strong roots in America's colonial past, which can be seen in the peaceful squares and fine houses of the Historic District. The Roundhouse Railroad Museum traces the history of railroad construction from the 1830s onwards, and Old Fort Jackson was the HQ for the Confederate Savannah River during the Civil War. East of Savannah is Tybee's Island, which has a scenic shoreline, an 18th-century lighthouse and birdlife attracted by its dunes, sub-tropical forests and salt marshes.

St Francisville

The beautiful small town of St Francisville is located on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Its historic centre reveals two centuries of architecture and lifestyles. The town has many historic pklanatation homes, including Myrtles Plantation with its large veranda, impressive ironwork and beautiful stained glass. It is considered one of America’s most haunted homes.

Vicksburg is rich in history and culture. The National Military Park is the city’s main attraction and has over 1000 monuments and markers including the Illinois State Memorial. The city is home to magnificent antebellum mansions, the most famous being Cedar Grove and offers sweeping views of the Mississippi River.

We thoroughly enjoyed this 7 day cruise down the Mississippi at the end of April. Before joining the cruise we spent two nights in Memphis, staying centrally at the Holiday Inn, Downtown, opposite the Peabody hotel, famous for the parade of ducks in the lobby each day. Nearby we visited the Civil Rights Museum, tastefully built behind the facade of the motel where Martin Luther King was assassinated. We also went to the river museum, took a trolley up and down Main Street, and in the evening spent some time in Beale Street, thronged with people, with the Blues booming out from clubs and restaurants. We could also have visited Graceland, about 10 miles out of town.

We joined the boat mid-morning on Saturday. It is a replica of a traditional Steam/Paddle boat. As it was built in 2012 all the amenities are up to date. There were 150 passengers of which 6 were from the UK, 2 from Australia and 2 from Canada. The rest were American. Dining was open seating, the food was good, with complimentary beer and wine at lunch and dinner. The service from the crew was excellent. There were talks about the river in the afternoon and musical entertainment in the evening. We set off on our 400 mile cruise on the winding Mississippi at lunchtime. The river is up to a mile wide the whole way, with a tree- lined embankment. In the afternoon we were fascinated to watch the commercial traffic going up- river. The largest we saw consisted of 42 large barges strung together in rows of 6 by 7 and pushed by a boat called a towboat.

The next day we arrived in Vicksburg and toured the famous civil war battlefield. Then it was on to Natchez and St Francisville, where we went past and also visited some beautifully restored antebellum homes as well as a working cotton plantation. After that we came to Baton Rouge, the state capital of Louisiana, where on a tour we went to the fascinating Louisiana State Museum and the old State Capitol. We had expected to pay for some of the tours, but at the end of the cruise they all turned out to be complimentary. The next day we came to what was probably the highlight of the cruise, a visit to Oak Alley Plantation, a former sugar plantation, with an imposing mansion, approached by a quarter-mile canopy of magnificent giant live oak trees, believed to be more than 300 years old. They are called live oaks because they are evergreeen. Finally, before reaching New Orleans, we were able to do some kite flying from the open deck, taking care to avoid approaching bridges and passing barges.

We disembarked in New Orleans at 8.30am on Saturday morning for a two night stay. We went straight to our hotel, where fortunately our room was ready. Suggest staying at either of the two Marriott hotels in Canal Street close to the French Quarter. Then it was out for more sightseeing, first to Jackson Square, the hub of the French Quarter, a carriage tour round the Quarter, went into the cathedral and French Market and had coffee and doughnuts at the renowned Cafe du Monde. Later we took the hop-on-hop-off bus round this vibrant city, which included a stop at the Mardi Gras Museum, where the floats are made for the annual parade, and took a trolley round the Garden District, lined with more beautiful houses. In the evening we found two good restaurants near our hotel, Galatoires and Dickie Brennans and joined the crowds walking up and down Bourbon Street, with jazz being played everywhere, both on and off the street. All in all a wonderful holiday, which we can highly recommend.

Everything went really well with our Mississippi river cruise holiday. We managed to get a lift with the flight crew to our hotel in Memphis which was a good start! Both hotels,were located in a good position. We had a great night in the BB Kings in Baele Street, Memphis, and the Jazz and Blues Club in Bourbon Street, New Orleans.

The boat was great with a nice room and the food was excellent. We had a great time in New Orleans as well.

Despite our reservations, there were no problems with the return connecting flights. All the security stuff at New Oreals which meant when we arrived at Washington Airport we could transfer easily to our connecting flight.

As for the river boats, Are these trips best booked in advance or can we pitch up on the day?

Any other hints/tips? Websites to book? gratefully received. Travelling with 2 older adults (70+) and staying close to Beale St

As for the river cruise, you'll be fine getting tickets the day of the cruise , especially in April when spring break holidays will be over for schools here. Its been a while since I've been on one, but you used to have to walk across cobblestones to get to the area. Not sure if that's still true or if that might be tricky for your mom.

American Cruise Lines: Pre-cruise visit to Graceland

Hard to believe this was an “everyday belt,” as the tour guide told us. Putting on cotton gloves, we were invited to heft the belt and take photos with it. Mighty heavy. Mighty gaudy. And mighty valuable.

After all, this was a belt once worn by Elvis Presley. On our first pre-cruise night in Memphis, my brother Joe and I went to the complimentary cocktail hour in the Founders’ Room at The Guest House at Graceland. Then we boarded a small shuttle for a behind-the-scenes look at Graceland.

Driven to a private room, we saw the Elvis belt as well as a locket Elvis had bought for his mother Gladys with a picture of the Empire State Building inside. We also saw a set of Kahlil Gibran’s books that Elvis had notated while reading and a motorcycle helmet and leather gloves that Elvis  had once worn.

A couple of women on our tour said they were taking home their cotton gloves because the gloves were good souvenirs. After all, the gloves had touched something that Elvis once touched. My souvenir was a photo of Joe holding the stunning belt.

After breakfast the next morning, Joe and I headed to Graceland for the day as part of our pre-cruise package. As a Beatles fan, Joe was interested in the 1979 Yamaha piano on display in the “Icon’s: The Influence of Elvis Presley” exhibit. John Lennon used the piano to compose multiple songs from his album “Double Fantasy.” The piano still has wax visible on the piano from candles he used while writing.

Perched atop the piano is a large photo of John Lennon with his quote, “Before Elvis, there was nothing.” Another nearby note card contains another John Lennon quote, “Nothing really affected me until I heard Elvis. If there hadn’t been an Elvis, there wouldn’t have been the Beatles.”

Elvis thought he would be quickly forgotten

A poignant comment from Elvis also is displayed: “I never expected to be anybody important.”

Elvis’ former wife Priscilla Presley has said that Elvis thought he would be quickly forgotten once he stopped singing.

“Elvis never thought that he would be remembered. That was his thing,” Priscilla has said. “He said, ‘You know, once I pass, nobody will remember me.”

Ah, how wrong he was.

Many musicians were influenced by Elvis and his impact inspired those to follow in his footsteps and create their own sound and pursue their dreams – just as he had done. The Icons exhibit is in “Elvis Presley’s Memphis,” located across from the Graceland mansion. Opened March 2, 2017, “Elvis Presley’s Memphis” features numerous attractions and exhibits. I counted about 15 of them and something new seems to be added or changed each year.

The celebrities featured in Icons are definitely icons on their own. Some decided to go into music because of Elvis and many are thankful to Elvis for creating a world where different musical styles are celebrated.

Icon celebrity selections range from the 1950s and the rise of Elvis to current generations of entertainers who were not even alive when Elvis died 46 years ago.

Some of the entertainers and their quotes and memorabilia items displayed in the exhibit include:

Buddy Holly – “None of us could have made it without Elvis.”

Elton John – “Ask anyone. If it hadn’t been for Elvis, I don’t know where popular music would be. He was the one that started it off, and he was definitely the start of it for me.”

Kid Rock – “The most popular thing in America culture is Elvis Presley No questions asked. He is the king.”

Dolly Parton – “If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, do more and become more, then you have accomplished something. Elvis did that and more for me and so many others.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – “When I was a kid, I loved Elvis. He was the ultimate in cool. Every guy wanted to be Elvis, me included.”

Bruce Springsteen – “It was like he came along and whispered some dream in everybody’s ear, and somehow we all dreamed it.”

Bob Dylan – “When I first heard Elvis’ voice, I just knew that I wasn’t going to work for anybody and nobody was going to be my boss. Hearing him for the first time was like busting out of jail.”

Blake Shelton – “If you take God and mix him with Fonzie and add the greatest voice of all time, that is Elvis Presley. He has influenced all genres, I mean all genres of music.”

Paul Stanley of KISS – “No one name says more than his: Elvis. It roars while others whisper.”

Gene Simmons of KISS – “Elvis is king. Period.

Post Malone – “I have a tat of Elvis on my finger along with John Lennon, Jim Morrison. If it wasn’t for these guys, I would not be making music right now.”

Trisha Yearwood – “I have been an Elvis fan as far back as I can remember. I wrote him a letter when I was 5, asking him to marry me and he didn’t write back, so I’m still pining over that one. I love the fact that he wasn’t afraid to be himself. He changed everything.”

Toby Keith – “No matter what genre of music you like, no matter who your favorite singer or group is, everyone including myself have been influenced, inspired and emotionally touched by Elvis. He was and still is the king and will forever be a part of our musical history.”

Jimi Hendrix – Although no quote is included from Jimi Hendrix who died Sept. 18, 1970, one of his coats and a drawing done by Jimi is exhibited. A placard notes that on Sept. 1, 1957, an impressionable 15-year-old Jim Hendrix was in attendance at Elvis’ concert in Seattle.

So influenced by the show, Jimi drew a picture of Elvis and listed the entire line-up of songs that Elvis performed that night. Later Jimi did covers of a few Elvis songs live including “Hound Dog” and “Blue Suede Shoes.”
