Cheering on the Brits

The Great Britain Cycling Team is once again fielding a strong seven-man squad of talented riders for the Tour of Britain, including elimination world champion Ethan Vernon and scratch European champion Ollie Wood.

Having both competed at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, where Wood also won a silver medal in the men’s Madison alongside Bolton Equities Black Spoke rider Mark Stewart, the British riders will be ready to race on home soil once again after the success of Glasgow. Stewart will also be competing in The Tour of Britain alongside teammates and fellow Brits Matt Bostock and Jacob Scott.

Wood and Vernon will be joined in the Great Britain Cycling Team by recent winner of the Arctic Race of Norway Stevie Williams, and promising 19-year-old Noah Hobbs, who finished fifth at the National Circuit Championships and third at Ronde van de Achterhoek this weekend. Josh Giddings and Jack Brough complete the line-up, having both raced competitively on the road this season and working well for their respective teams.

The team will also be rubbing shoulders with British WorldTour team INEOS Grenadiers, with Tom Pidcock ready to redeem himself after a second-place finish in a shortened Tour of Britain last year.

UCI Continental team Saint Piran has a strong squad of British riders competing, including Alex Richardson, Harry Birchill, Finn Crockett, Zeb Kyffin, Jack Rootkin-Gray and Bradley Symonds, having dominated the National Road Series this year with a clean sweep of podiums in each round. TRINITY Racing will also be competitive at The Tour of Britain for another year, with Lukas Nerurkar, Bob Donaldson, Finlay Pickering, Oliver Rees and Max Walker ready to take to the start line.

2021 Tour of Britain route unveiled

Three hilltop finishes and a team time trial for eight-day race

The route for the 2021 Tour of Britain has been unveiled, with three hilltop finishes and a team time trial on the menu for the early September, eight-day race.

The race, which kicks off in Penzance in Cornwall on September 5, will head to Exeter, Llandudno, Warrington and Edinburgh before finishing in Aberdeen – the first time the modern race has ended with two Scottish stages.

Despite lacking a longer summit finish – such as the Whinlatter Pass in 2018 or Haytor in 2016 – the race still takes in a mammoth 18,800 metres of climbing spread across 1,320 kilometres of racing, with plenty of hills spread throughout every stage.

"This year's Tour of Britain route is truly spectacular, covering a greater geographical area than we've ever done before while also ticking off several things we've wanted to do for a long time," said Race Director Mick Bennett.

Tour of Britain unveil first six teams for 2021 race 2021 Tour of Britain stage start and finish locations unveiled 2022 Tour of Britain set to finish on the Isle of Wight

"Be it visiting Cornwall and Aberdeenshire, hosting stage finishes on the summit of Great Orme and in the shadow of the Angel of the North, reintroducing a team time trial and visiting noteworthy and historic host venues new and old, I have a feeling that this year's race will be one for the ages.

"There are still fantastic opportunities for partners to get involved in the event, so why not join us and be a part of what will be an unforgettable week and a fantastic celebration of Britain and cycling!"

The 17th edition of the Tour of Britain, rescheduled after the cancellation last year, starts with a 180.8-kilometre hilly stage in south-west England, concluding with an uphill finish in Bodmin after having taken in three third-category climbs along the way.

Stage 2 will take the riders to Devon for another challenging day, this time featuring three second-category climbs spread across the 184-kilometre route. Exeter hosts the finish for the first time since Matthias Brändle's solo victory in 2014.

The third stage brings the challenge of a team time trial for only the third time in race history. The 27.7-kilometre test runs from Llandilo to the National Botanic Garden of Wales, and the hilly course should provide a major GC sort-out.

Stage 4 is the queen stage of the race, taking riders from south to north Wales as they skirt Cardigan Bay on the 210.2-kilometre day from Aberaeron to Llandudno. The coastal resort town will host an brutal uphill finish on the Great Orme (1.9km at 9.8 per cent), with a less steep lap of the headland preceding the finale.

The fifth stage sees the peloton head from Cheshire to a finish in Warrington. Full details of the 152km stage have yet to be confirmed.

Stage 6 takes the peloton across the far north of England from Carlisle to Gateshead. The 197.4-kilometre stage brings three first-category climbs along the way and further climbing towards the end of the stage en route to an uphill finish in Gateshead, which hosted stage finishes in 2008 and 2009.

The town of Hawick near the English border kicks off the first of two days in Scotland to conclude the race. The peloton face another hilly day with two second-category climbs dotted along the 195.7-kilometre route to Edinburgh, where the finish will be staged below Arthur's Seat.

The final stage – the most northerly ever to feature in the race – takes the riders 173 kilometres from Stonehaven to Aberdeen, with the first-category Cairn o'Mount providing a stern test early on, with more hilly lying in wait on the way to the finish.

A full list of teams and participants have yet to be confirmed for this year's race, which should provide a good lead-in for the Flanders Worlds later in September. Five British Continental teams – Canyon dhb SunGod, SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling, Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling, Saint Piran and Trinity Racing – and the Great Britain national team have already been confirmed as taking part, however.

Future for Tour of Britain men’s race in balance over dispute with promoter

  • British Cycling terminates agreement with SweetSpot
  • Governing body claims £700,000 owed in unpaid rights fees

The future of the men’s Tour of Britain is hanging by a thread after the governing body, British Cycling , terminated its agreement with SweetSpot, the race promoter, in what they claim is a financial dispute over unpaid rights fees.

The ending of British Cycling’s deal with SweetSpot means that, unless a new promoter can be found in the immediate future, the race is effectively cancelled and risks being removed from the 2024 programmes of the world’s leading riders and teams.

In a memo sent to all British Cycling staff, the governing body said: “We have taken the decision to terminate our agreement with immediate effect following the non-payment of agreed rights fees.” A statement issued later on Tuesday confirmed the news. British Cycling owns the rights to the Tour of Britain , and SweetSpot successfully tendered in 2019, securing a 10-year contract until 2029. The Guardian understands that British Cycling claims SweetSpot owes £700,000 in unpaid instalments, dating back to 2022. SweetSpot declined to comment on the amount involved or the exact nature of the dispute and said the matter was being discussed between the two legal teams.

“The agreed rights fee form a significant part of British Cycling’s earned income,” the memo, leaked to cyclingweekly.com stated, adding that “the current situation is untenable, with a clear financial impact on our organisation and our ability to invest in the growth of the sport.”

The memo added that British Cycling is now “progressing plans to ensure the successful delivery of the (men’s) Tour of Britain in 2024”.

However, speaking on Tuesday morning, Hugh Roberts, SweetSpot’s Tour of Britain CEO, asserted that the race organisers were pushing “full steam ahead” into event planning for 2024.

“We are in very positive talks, particularly regarding the Women’s Tour, with numerous stakeholders,” Roberts told the Guardian.

Both sides have put the dispute in the hands of lawyers, although no litigation has yet been actioned. “I am optimistic that the issues with British Cycling can be overcome,” Roberts said. “We have to resolve our differences.”

Both the men’s and women’s races have faced crises in funding in the past year. British Cycling does not own rights to the Women’s Tour (of Britain), but the 2023 race was cancelled due to “increased running costs and a reduced level of commercial support,” according to SweetSpot.

The Tour Series of criterium races, another SweetSpot event, was also cancelled in 2023, with the promoter citing “wider economic challenges”.

Uncertainty also surrounded the men’s Tour of Britain, although the race did eventually run, but on a reduced scale and was also criticised for its flat route. wThe race’s director, Mick Bennett, responded to those critics of the quality of the race by saying: “They don’t understand the bigger picture we have to deal with.”

Sources within British Cycling also cited the pressure on the body’s own finances, after it became known in late October that declining membership and lower revenues had forced a bout of redundancies.

“I do not think it will come as a surprise to anybody to see that the global economic climate and cost-of-living crisis have made our work to attract new members and commercial investment incredibly challenging,” British Cycling CEO, Jon Dutton, said.

Exclusive: Men’s Tour of Britain stages cut to seek parity for women’s race

British Cycling aim to increase women’s Tour of Britain to six stages in 2025 in order to create full parity between the two events

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

Carlos Rodriguez and Stephen Williams

The men’s Tour of Britain will be cut to six stages in 2024 in order to lay the foundations for full parity with its women’s equivalent in the years ahead, Cycling Weekly has learned.

It follows on from the national governing body announcing it will organise both races in house under its new major events arm .

In a statement shared with Cycling Weekly on Wednesday, British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton confirmed the details of the plan and explained that talks were scheduled with the UCI in order to gain permission to scale back the ProTour event.

"We’ve taken the decision to run the 2024 edition of the Tour of Britain Men over six days rather than the current eight, and we intend to seek permission from the UCI to extend the Tour of Britain Women to six days from 2025," he said.

"This would bring full parity to the events after our decision to align the event names this year – something which is fundamental to our vision for major cycling events in Britain."

Cycling Weekly understands that full parity includes the overall length of the race as well as future prize money at this stage.

British Cycling has contacted various men’s teams to gather opinion on the potential reduction of race days. Dutton explained that there was support for the decision for a variety of reasons.

Get The Leadout Newsletter

"From discussions with a number of men’s teams over recent weeks there is strong support for the decision, and a feeling that the reduction in the number of stages will provide more compelling and animated racing for riders at the roadside to enjoy," he explained.

Cycling Weekly revealed last month that the shortened Tour of Britain Women is set to start in Wales in June .

Dutton said that full route details regarding the women's race would be made public within the next fortnight.

He said: "Our host towns and cities for the Tour of Britain Women will be announced within the next two weeks, and we are also now very close to finalising our hosts for the Tour of Britain Men.

"Our team has worked around the clock to safeguard the future of the races in an incredibly short timeframe, and we’re also hugely thankful for the commitment of those who have stepped forward to support us this year and those that have pledged their support for 2025 and beyond.

"While 2024 was always going to be about protecting the immediate future of the races, we remain hugely excited by the opportunities to modernise and grow the events in the years ahead."

British Cycling took over the organisation of both events after the collapse of the former promoter, SweetSpot . After being beset by financial difficulty, the firm entered liquidation in January .

Tour of Britain 2024 Stages and Routes

The first details of the 20th edition of the modern race will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Following the cancellation of the 2021 edition owing to the death of Her Majesty The Queen, organisers SweetSpot will continue to work with the local authorities who were due to host stages to explore opportunities to host the race in the future.

One of the most highly anticipated professional cycling events in the United Kingdom is all set to kick off in the first week of September. The Tour of Britain is gearing up for its 2021 edition, which will also be the 14th edition since the reincarnation of the event with several changes in 2004. The cycling Tour of Britain route was unveiled back in February 2021 with the addition of a time trial stage. It now means that the Tour of Britain 2021 has nine stages compared to 8 in recent years. Even those eight Tour of Britain stages were a bump up from the five stages the event used to have in 2004.

The Surprising Route

Tour of Britain 2021 race director Mick Bennett unveiled the cycling Tour of Britain route in the hope of keeping up with the recent momentum of popularity gathered by the event. Several changes to the Tour of Britain stages over the last few years have made it more competitive and brought it to the levels of Tour de France or Vuelta a Espana. Attracting the best riders in the world to the United Kingdom is one of the sole objectives of this event.

George Square in Glasgow will form the location for the start of the 2021 edition. The nine Tour of Britain stages will see riders cover just over 1300 km from September 4 to September 11. This will certainly take its toll on the riders, but there is a consensus that the 2021 edition will be slightly easier than the 2015 edition. Furthermore, there is an opportunity for riders to make use of every Tour of Britain stage to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships in Qatar. This reason alone is expected to increase general interest amongst riders in the competition.

Tour of Britain 2021 – Challenging Parts

The upcoming competition brings a lot of aspects like challenging races and sprint finishes. These are aspects which will have a lot to do at the World Championships. Glasgow last played host to the start of the event back in 2008. It provides a sprint finish to the Castle Douglas since there is no prominent climbs along the way. Stage two goes through various sections of the enchanting Lake District, which may not offer anything out of the blue for experienced riders. The Lake District has been a standard fare of the Tour of Britain in recent years. Even though much of the route will be familiar, riders will have to be prepared for the climb from Ambleside towards the end of the stage.

Stage three at the Congleton marks the beginning of the tough stages. As expected, the stage four takes its toll since it is the longest. As the competition enters into the final stages, riders go through Wales and Bath before a time trial event near London. The final stage will be a replica of the final stage in 2015, which received a lot of rave reviews. Each stage is tough and this will be on the minds of punters when it comes to Tour of Britain bet online.

The growing popularity of the event has also resulted in a number of punters looking for good Tour of Britain bet online opportunities. These opportunities are presented because of the Tour of Britain 2021 odds, which are once again leaning towards the favourites like Alberto Contador. Even though it makes a lot of sense to make an early judgement, Tour of Britain 2021 odds at a later stage will provide a more accurate picture about the favourites for the title.

2024 Tour of Britain to Be Shorten for Gender Parity, Women’s Tour Renamed

I n an effort to achieve parity between the men’s and women’s events in the years to come, the men’s Tour of Britain will be reduced in length.

The race, typically run over eight stages, will now consist of six stages. Race organizers recently announced the change, citing a need for complete parity between the Tour of Britain and the Women’s Tour, which will be known as the Women’s Tour of Britain going forward.

“We’ve taken the decision to run the 2024 edition of the Tour of Britain Men over six days rather than the current eight, and we intend to seek permission from the UCI to extend the Tour of Britain Women to six days from 2025,” said British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton. “This would bring full parity to the events after our decision to align the event names this year—which is fundamental to our vision for major cycling events in Britain.”

Due to the liquidation of SweetSpot, the races’ former organizers, both the Tour of Britain and the Women’s Tour, spent the last few seasons on unstable ground.

The Women’s Tour spent last year on a rollercoaster, as it was first reported the race was in danger of being canceled due to a funding shortfall. Shortly after, a crowdfunding campaign was announced , which fell short of its goal, leading to the race’s cancelation .

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, domestic superteam Ineos Grenadiers announced they would do what they could to help save the Tour of Britain. Both races were removed from the UCI calendar earlier this year.

However, as both races are recognized as some of the crown jewels of British cycling, the nation’s governing body stepped in to ensure both can continue into the future. In February, the UCI announced that it agreed to sanction the men’s race, which is run in September. Then, British Cycling rebranded the Women’s Tour as the Tour of Britain Women and recently announced that a shorter iteration will, in fact, run this June.

“Our host towns and cities for the Tour of Britain Women will be announced within the next two weeks, and we are also very close to finalizing our hosts for the Tour of Britain Men,” Dutton said. “Our team has worked around the clock to safeguard the future of the races in a concise timeframe, and we’re also hugely thankful for the commitment of those who have stepped forward to support us this year and those who have pledged their support for 2025 and beyond.”

The move toward parity between the two races makes perfect sense, as the Women’s Tour was typically at the vanguard of equality between the men’s and women’s pelotons. The race was once one of the most prominent in the fight for women’s equal prize money. It was often broadcast live on the British ITV network, which brought eyeballs and money to the women’s WorldTour.

British Cycling announces a reduction in the men’s race length and alignment of the Women’s Tour to ensure equal standing in the cycling calendar.

His old team Ineos Grenadiers will this time be hoping the veteran Geraint Thomas will be able to challenge for the win and bring them another victory to keep the title in house.

Ineos are also sending their time trial ace Filippo Ganna but he won't be challenging for the overall just working in a support role for Thomas to help him fend of the challenge from the likes of Romain Bardet (Team DSM Firmenich-PostNL), Lennard Kämna (Bora-hansgrohe) and Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost).

Tour of the Alps 2024 stages

The 709 kilometre race starts in Neumarkt/Egna with a 133km stage that features three moderate climbs, firstly the ascent of Andalo followed by two ascents of the smaller and steeper 4.3 km Penone climb on the finishing circuit.

Stage two sees the race leave Salurn/Salorno in Italy and cross over into Austria to finish in Stans. The first half of the stage is predominantly all uphill and the second half all downhill, although punctuated by a couple of nasty little ramps which could provide a launch pad for attacks.

Set in Austria stage three is just 124.8 kilometres long with the majority of it rolling until the finale which features twin ascents of the Weerberg and Pillberg climbs. Both are very steep with gradients in the mid teens which will encourage those riders who like punchy short climbs to try and break free and take the stage.

Back in Italy stage four is the Queen stage and boasts multiple climbs including the two first category ascents of the Passo del Compet and Passo del Vetriolo. This is the day the GC contenders will have to show what they are made of and use their superior climbing power if they want to win overall.

The race wraps up with another killer stage of climbing and another first category ascent, the Palù del Fersina which will be ridden twice to give fans two glances of their heroes. At 118 kilometres it is another very short stage but is a worthy stage to decide the winner of the 2024 race.

Simon Warren has been obsessed with cycling since the summer of 1989 after watching Greg Lemond battle Laurent Fignon in the Tour de France. Although not having what it took to beat the best, he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his fascination with steep roads. Covering the British Isles, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain he has been riding and racing up hills and mountains for over 30 years now. Amstel Gold Race 2024: Tom Pidcock claims victory after Marianne Vos takes women's race

Britain's Olympic mountain bike champion Tom Pidcock took victory in the 2024 Amstel Gold Race

Tom Pidcock made his third step on the podium at the Amstel Gold Race a winning one on Sunday (14 April).

Having been a narrow second in 2021 and third last year, the defending mountain bike Olympic champion won a sprint finish from a four-man breakaway to secure his third road cycling Classic victory.

Marc Hirschi was second with Tiesj Benoot in third place.

After his triumphs in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix on the last two weekends, Mathieu van der Poel finished in the peloton which was unable to haul in the leaders.

Earlier, Marianne Vos won a bunch sprint to claim her second women's race triumph having been victorious previously in 2021.

The 36-year-old star edged out fellow Dutchwoman Lorena Wiebes - who had her hands raised prematurely in celebration - to take an event shortened due to a crash involving a police motorcycle.

Tour of Flanders 2024: Mathieu van der Poel converts Koppenberg attack into third triumph

  • Tom Pidcock lauded as potential world’s best, but in which discipline will he shine brightest?

Tom Pidcock times sprint to perfection

Three riders - Mikkel Honoré , Louis Vervaeke and Paul Lapeira - broke clear of the peloton just inside the last 60km.

Vervaeke was dropped on the Eyserbosweg climb 35km from the finish, and 10 riders - including Pidcock, Hirschi and Bauke Mollema - bridged the gap to make it a lead group of 12.

They extended their lead over the pack to 40 seconds ahead of the second ascent of the famous Cauberg with Honoré unable to live with the pace at the front.

With just over 10km to go, Pidcock, Hirschi, Mauri Vansevenant and Benoot formed a smaller breakaway group and established a 10-second gap at the front with just one climb, the Bemelerberg, to come.

Six kilometres from home, Pidcock launched an attack but could not shake off the other three with Vansevenant looking in danger of losing contact. Lapeira's effort to try and make it a five-man breakaway proved in vain with the podium places coming from the lead four.

Five riders almost bridged the gap as the front four sized each other up in the last few hundred metres, but then the racing began in earnest.

Vansevenant was forced to lead out before fading, and it was Pidcock who had the strength to take a narrow win from Hirschi with Benoot in third.
