JB Day Trip Itinerary — Where to Eat, Play and Shop Under S$70

day trip to jb from singapore

Go beyond your typical JB day trip to KSL and City Square while sticking to a friendly budget!

First published: 5 July 2022

Many of us head to Johor Bahru (JB) for one of two reasons: to shop or to cafe-hop. After all, cheap shopping steals are all there is to JB right? — Not exactly.

Pasar Karat JB Bazaar Outside KSL - Johor Day Trip

It’s true that prices are cheaper across the Causeway, but there’s so much more to eat, play and shop in JB than just shopping malls or aesthetic cafes.

Apart from your familiar hot spots, this adventurous itinerary will show you how to zhng your JB day trip with panoramic skyline views, a bustling night market, and an exciting pop-up theme park.

Plus, you don’t have to spend much to enjoy these cool experiences at all!

JB Day Pre-trip Essentials

Friends together at Skyscape - Johor Day Trip

Before anything, you might want to secure some things for a hassle-free experience.

Connectivity: We booked a 4G eSIM Card, just enough for one day ( ~S$9 for 2.5GB/5 days via Klook)

Activities: Pre-purchase your tickets online for cheaper prices. For instance, we bought our tickets to Skyscape (also via Klook ) and saved ~S$4/adult.

*Pro-tip: Use the code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klook to get 5% off all activities with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15). Apply the promo code when you checkout. One-time use only!

Cash: Cards are accepted in malls and cafes, but not at traditional stalls like Salahuddin or the night market. Hence, we recommend changing cash for the trip. When paying for bigger ticket items in shopping malls, use multi-currency cards like YouTrip or Revolut to avoid lousy exchange rates.

Transportation: We have a dedicated section for getting around JB later on, but you might want to download Grab as it may be the cheaper option for groups. For instance, the bus to KSL from Customs costs RM2/pax but a Grab that can take four people costs RM5.

If you’re exploring regions beyond JB, then you might want to take a look at Klook’s All-in-One Value Pack for Malaysia . It’ll give you discount vouchers for activities, SIM cards, airport transfers, etc. You can save up to ~S$95 when you use all the vouchers included in the pack!

Budget Breakdown for JB Day Trip

(detailed breakdown for 1 pax here)

Getting to and around Johor Bahru (JB)

Johor Train - Johor Day Trip

There are three options to get to Johor Bahru via public transport: 1) Train from Woodlands Train Checkpoint (S$5 to JB and RM5 to SG) 2) Bus 160/170 from Opposite Kranji MRT Station , or Bus 170X from Kranji Station (S$1.25/ one-way journey) 3) Grab Bus from various locations like Changi Airport, Expo MRT, Marsiling MRT and more (from S$3 to S$11 per person)

The train ride is a more comfortable option at only S$5/one-way trip (S$5 to JB and RM5 to SG), without having to squeeze compared to the bus.

*Pro-tip: Pre-book your train tickets as seats get sold out quickly.

Meanwhile, public buses offer the flexibility of time without having to rush for your ride. At Kranji Station , all three buses to JB arrive every 15-20 mins (depending on road conditions). Or book a bus on the Grab app to secure a seat and ride in comfort!

You’ll have to alight at the Woodlands Checkpoint for immigration, before continuing your journey across the Causeway to Malaysia’s checkpoint.

A fuss-free option for groups of four (or more) is to share a one-way car transfer between Singapore and JB. There are car options that even seat up to 9 pax! You won’t need to alight at both checkpoints, and you can choose pick-up / drop-off points that suit your itinerary.

Opposite kranji mrt bus stop - JOhor Day Trip

When travelling around Johor for a day trip, Grab is an affordable and convenient option even for those on a budget. From Customs, a ride to KSL Mall costs about RM5, while further places like the Euro Fun Park cost only RM24.

To book a Grab, you’ll need to buy data for your day trip. Check out prices for data roaming with your service provider. Or, book a  4GB eSIM  (~S$9) via Klook.

9AM: Breakfast at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee

A short 15-minute walk from Customs, you’ll find the heritage street of Jalan Tan Hiok Nee . With various old-school eats and plenty of aesthetic cafes, Tan Hiok Nee is home to both the “old” and the “new” where trends and tradition co-exist.

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory

People queueing at Hiap Joo Bakery - Johor Day Trip

Be prepared to queue.

When visiting the Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory , you’ll probably find yourself in a long snaking line with people eager to get their hands on their delicious, fragrant banana cake.

While Hiap Joo Bakery does export its banana cakes to Singapore, the cheaper prices and joy of savouring these cakes fresh out of the oven are worth the trip down. Each box comes with 10 slices of cake, just enough to bring some home to your family!

Cost: RM12/box (~S$3.50) Opening hours: 7:30AM – 4:30PM, closed on Sun How to get there: 15min walk from JB CIQ Checkpoint ( Google Maps )

Restoran Hua Mui

Restoran Hua Mui Entrance - Johor Day Trip

Another great breakfast place to visit before cafes open at 10AM is the open-air eatery, Restoran Hua Mui .

Their signature Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM18.90) is what most people go here for, while their toasts and sandwiches are also available if you’re looking for something lighter.

Friends having breakfast at Restoran Hua Mui - Things to do in JB

We tried some interesting drinks that you won’t encounter much in Singapore, like the Kopi Gu You — coffee with butter (RM3.80) and the Three Layer Milk Tea, also known as the Milk Kopi (RM6.90).

Opening hours: 8AM – 5PM How to get there: 1min walk from Hiap Joo Bakery ( Google Maps )

Salahuddin Bakery

Salahuddin bakery pastries - Johor Day Trip

Salahuddin Bakery is one of JB’s oldest eateries and feels much like a living museum. Since opening back in 1937, they have retained their rustic and antique decor with Peranakan tiles, complete with old-school signages and calendars.

Salahuddin Bakery Oven - Johor Day Trip

Traditional bakes and pastries sold here include bread, cakes, and curry puffs — all baked in an old wood-fired oven. We tried the Karipap Ayam (RM3.50) and Sugar Puff (RM2), which is a good try if you like flaky and crumbly pastries!

Opening hours: 9AM – 6PM, closed on Fri How to get there: 2min walk from Restoran Hua Mui ( Google Maps )

11AM: Hunt for Instagrammable Street Art

Girl posing at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee street art - JB Day Trip

Before the midday sun hits, take a stroll around Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and its nearby streets. You’ll find vibrant street art and olden architecture that make for good outdoor photo spots!

There are several interesting murals and painted pillars along Jalan Trus and Jalan Ibrahim as well. We saw a large dugong on the side of a building along Jalan Ibrahim! Let us know in the comments if you spot any, and where 🕵️

12PM: Cafe-hopping

The Replacement Cafe - Things to do in JB

Trust us when we say that Jalan Tan Hiok Nee has plenty of cafes — we saw about 10 cafes within a short 15-minute walk around the neighbourhood.

The well-known ones here are The Replacement – Lodge & Kitchen , Chaiwalla & Co. Container Cafe or Flowers in the Window . But here are a few more to check out:

Bev C’afe

Friends at Bev C'afe - Things to do in JB

With rustic, woody interiors, Bev C’afe is relatively small but cosy. According to their menu, they serve what they like to eat! We found unique creations such as the Jackfruit Cheesecake (RM10) and Leicha Cake (RM16).

Food items at Bev C'afe - Things to do in JB

The Jackfruit Cheesecake is an interesting try, albeit a little tiny. The strong scent of jackfruit didn’t overpower the taste of the cake — overall, it produced a delicious but balanced flavour. The Citrus Honey Lemon Soda (RM14) also paired well with it and makes for a refreshing finish.

The cafe is located on the second floor, above the Bev C concept store .

Opening hours: 10AM – 6PM, closed on Wed How to get there: 1min walk from Salahuddin Bakery ( Google Maps )

Interior of Offee Cafe - Things to do in JB

Recommended by the staff at a now defunct gallery nearby, Offee Cafe boasts a sleek, white modern interior.

One can probably guess what it’s known for — yes, coffee! ☕️ They serve interesting creations including the Coconut Latte (RM12) and Oat Latte (RM12).

Friends drinking coffee at Offee Cafe - Johor Day Trip

While I’m more of a tea person, coffee lovers Shai and Bren gave the cafe and its coffee an 8/10 for its taste and ambience.

Opening hours: 8AM – 12AM How to get there: 1min walk from Bev C’afe ( Google Maps )

Bonus: Principle Cafe by T.A.M. (Jalan Trus)

Principle Cafe by T.A.M. at Jalan Trus - JB Day Trip

Special mention goes to Principle Cafe at Jalan Trus . It’s a 10-minute walk from Bev C’afe and Offee Cafe, but only a stone’s throw from our next stop in this JB itinerary.

The menu is pretty extensive, serving up breakfast items, pizzas, pastas, and a variety of cakes and tarts. We tried their Hojicha Terrine Tart (RM13) which had an intense hojicha taste and was ✨not too sweet ✨.

Hojicha Terrine Tart and coffee at Principle Cafe at Jalan Trus - JB Day Trip

Not gonna lie — prices are slightly higher than average, but worth it for the quality of its dishes and all-around zen vibes. Plus, you can now pre-purchase dining vouchers via Klook to save up to 20% off your bill!

Opening hours: 8:30AM – 6PM How to get there: 11min walk from Offee Cafe ( Google Maps )

2PM: Panoramic Skyline Views at Skyscape

Girl overlooking scenery at Skyscape - Johor Day Trip

Skyscape is most famous for the glass-floored sky bridge located on the 33rd floor.

At 149m above ground, the translucent glass floor may be challenging for people with acrophobia (fear of heights) — although Bren took it alright! Here, we enjoyed a panoramic overview of Johor Bahru and the Causeway bridge.

Friends looking at scenery at Skyscape - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Skyscape also offers complimentary activities included in your ticket, like virtual reality games, access to the observation deck, and the TikTok-famous LED tunnel amongst others.

We pre-booked our Skyscape adventure through Klook , so that all we had to do was have our QR code scanned at the entrance.

Cost: ~S$10.30/pax , RM5 (~S$1.50) for shoe covers (paid on site) Opening hours: 9:30AM – 5:30PM, last entry at 4PM How to get there: 5min walk from Principle Cafe ( Google Maps )

3PM: Shop Near KSL City Mall

KSL City Mall is no stranger to most Singaporeans; it’s easily accessible via Grab or by a feeder bus at Customs. You’re guaranteed to have something to do here as they have many establishments like KTVs, massage parlours, and shopping options.

But other than shopping inside the mall, step outside and you’ll find new interesting places to explore.

Avery-Day Convenience Concept Store

Avery Day Convenience Store Entrance - Things to do in Johor Bahru

For all snack-lovers like myself, this unique convenience concept store could most probably make for your dream snack heaven 😍

Located outside KSL City Mall at the CBTL entrance, Avery Day sells snacks from various countries: Thailand, Taiwan, China, Korea, Japan… you name it. We recognised some familiar snacks but bought those that are less commonly found in SG.

Yoghurt Bottles - Things to do in Johor Bahru

For example, this Taiwanese yoghurt drink (RM9.90) caught our eyes as it came in the shape of a milk bottle. We can’t remember the last time we drank from milk bottles but we decided to try it once again that day.

It did feel weird drinking from a teat, but the yoghurt was tangy and refreshing.

Snacks at Avery Day - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Hot snacks like fried chicken, fries, and nuggets are also available. After you’ve done your shopping, you can enjoy your snacks at the outdoor sitting area on the second floor!

Opening hours: 9AM – 12AM How to get there: ~8min taxi/Grab ride from Skyscape ( Google Maps )

Pasar Karat

Pasar Karat Night Market - Johor Day Trip

Take a step out of Avery Day and join the crowds at Pasar Karat . It’s a night market that stretches a few hundred metres down the street and will probably take a good 30 minutes to walk down the entire lane.

Pasar Karat JB Bazaar Chendol - Things to do in Johor Bahru

There were many stalls selling local delights such as fried carrot cake, Assam laksa, BBQ skewers, chendol (iced green jelly dessert) — we were absolutely spoilt for choice. We had a great dinner snacking on a little bit of everything.

Some stalls also sold everyday items like nail cutters, fire starters, and water bottles that make for good souvenirs to bring home.

Entrance fee: Free Opening hours: 6PM – 2AM, closed on Mon How to get there: 15min taxi/Grab ride from Avery Day ( Google Maps )

7PM: Pop-up theme park at Euro Fun Park

Euro Fun Park Entrance - Johor Day Trip

To end off the night with a bang, visit Euro Fun Park , a pop-up theme park!

The rides here are pretty thrilling — I dare say they’re better than your typical neighbourhood fairs. Our top choices were definitely the Vortex and Space Flyer.

Space Flyer Euro Fun Park - Johor Bahru Day Trip

The Vortex takes you cartwheeling high up into the air while you spin around endlessly for a fun yet dizzy experience. The Space Flyer takes the usual spinning chair carnival ride but goes up high to 30m in height.

Euro Fun Park Ferris Wheel - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Rides are paid in tokens (RM2 each). For instance, the Vortex requires 15 tokens while the Space Flyer requires 10 tokens.

Entrance fee: RM5 (excl. cost of rides) Opening hours: 7PM – 12AM

*Note: The theme park occasionally shifts around to different locations in Malaysia. Check their website for updates before you go!

Planning your Budget JB Day Trip

Outside Offee Cafe - Things to do in Johor Bahru

A day trip to JB can be lighter on the pocket if you plan ahead! That means pre-booking activities that you want to do, having your multi-currency cards ready, and planning which transportation to use. That way, you’ll have more money for the fun stuff like shopping and cafe-hopping!

And don’t forget to check out Klook’s Great JB Getaway Page for special deals on food and activity bookings!

*Pro-tip: Use the code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klook to get 5% off all activities with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15). Apply the promo code when you checkout. One-time use only!

Kam Long Fish Head Soup - JB Itinerary

Save on cafe-hopping with discounted dining vouchers or skip the queue for popular food spots like Kam Long Ah Zai Curry Fish Head 💁🏻‍♀️ There are options for the Signature Curry Fish Head or Fish Tail (meat only), in S/M/L portions that serve up to six pax!

Johor Bahru Streets - Things to do in JB

I’ve been guilty of sticking to shopping malls on my usual visits to Johor Bahru (thank the weather 🥵), but this day trip to JB got me wanting to explore more of the city’s not-so-hidden gems that I’ve long overlooked.

One such area is Taman Mount Austin, a 20 to 30-minute drive from the JB City Centre. Aside from aesthetic cafes , there are interesting activity centres and craft workshops where you can tuft your own rugs or try your hand at decoden . Check out our 3D2N JB Itinerary for more things to do on a weekend trip!

Affordable day trips around JB to maximise your time across the Causeway

Affordable day trips around JB to maximise your time across the Causeway

The December holiday period is expectedly the peak travel season in Singapore, with families going abroad and working adults clearing their AL (annual leave).

If you're scrambling for a last minute, affordable, fuss-free getaway, neighbouring JB is probably your best bet, and we have the long Causeway jams to prove it.

And if you're going to be spending hours stuck crossing the border there and back, it might be worth your while taking an extended break and looking beyond JB, especially if you drive.

With Johor being the fifth-largest state in Malaysia by area, why limit yourself to your usual hangouts in JB when there's plenty to see and do in other towns nearby?

READ ALSO:   5 things to do in JB that's not shopping, eating or getting a massage

Here are some fun places not too far away that you might want to stop by the next time you're planning a slightly longer stay "overseas".

Drive time from JB Sentral: 1.5 hours

The Malaysian beach town of Desaru is becoming increasingly popular for overworked Singaporeans in need of some R&R.

Less than two hours' drive from Woodlands checkpoint, the district is perfect for families and couples, with opulent resorts, a serene six-kilometre coastline and one of the biggest waterparks in the world.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BnnJkQmFCVC/[/embed]

For the thrill-seekers, Adventure Waterpark has a high-speed roller coaster and flume ride called Kraken's Revenge, as well as five other twister slides guaranteed to get your heart pumping.

At Desaru Coast, Malaysia's newest destination resort, you'll also find globally-renowned hotels such as Hard Rock and The Westin. A 45-hole golf course as well as a 23-acre waterfront landscaped retail and lifestyle village are among the highlights.

Desaru is also home to Malaysia's biggest ostrich farm , where you can organise ostrich rides and have a closer look at the world's largest flightless bird.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BmqBJktlDds/[/embed]

For those with a curious palate, here's your chance to taste a mega-sized omelette and ostrich teppanyaki and satay. Just spare the little ones the details!

Seafood lovers should head on over to Tanjung Balau Fishing Village and sample the freshest catch of the day while learning about the kampung's past through galleries featuring how the fishermen navigated through treacherous waters.

KOTA TINGGI

Drive time from JB Sentral: 1 hour 5 minutes

Known as a historical town where the Sultanate of Johor was established, Kota Tinggi is the stuff of road trips with plenty to see, do and eat.

If we managed to convince you to take a trip to Desaru, you might want to make Kota Tinggi one of your pit-stops since the two districts are on the same side of the Johor state.

Although Kota Tinggi may not be the biggest tourist magnet for city-dwellers, nature-lovers are often drawn by the serenity of the waterfalls, trees and (relatively) untouched environment.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BTiphK3gAzB/[/embed]

The main draw of Kota Tinggi is the Lombong Falls, located at the foot of Gunung Mutahak, a famous mountain that's a 20-minute drive away from the main town area.

There, you'll find shallow pools ideal for the little ones to cool off and swim or wade around in, as well as an 80m-long water slide located at the site.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BS538hzAXcS/[/embed]

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BS5UX1Jg1u-/[/embed]

Good news for us visitors — the local government has recently upgraded facilities available as part of the Visit Johor Year 2020 campaign.

[[nid:468878]]

Kota Tinggi is also a hotspot for "glampers" who want a more luxurious outdoor experience, and Canopy Tribes is one place that organises "glamping" (glamorous camping) under the star-lit night sky.

If you're going all-out to experience nature, be sure to stop by the Kota Tinggi firefly park and the Teluk Sengat crocodile farm that's home to more than 1,000 fearsome reptiles.

The crocodile farm is about a half hour drive from town and an hour's drive from Desaru.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/B1DMJzhhHFC/[/embed]

Drive time from JB Sentral: 1 hour 15 minutes.

Located in the Pontian district, Kukup is a simple fishing village built on stilts and a popular choice for families to book chalets and have seafood barbeques at.

A great fishing spot and relaxed space to just chill out, a chalet visit to Kukup isn't complete without singing karaoke, playing mahjong and sightseeing around town.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/B43vxrDhCP9/[/embed]

For just RM5 (S$1.60) per person, you can also choose to take a boat-tour around the kelongs and check out how fish and other intriguing marine life like butterfish, horseshoe crabs, eels and others are bred.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/B5grNmlnnTZ/[/embed]

For the intrepid traveller, consider taking a boat out to visit Kukup Island that's one-kilometre off the coastline — it's said to be the hideout of pirates in the olden days.

Declared as a protected national park in 1997, Kukup Island is a wetland that's home to a wide array of mangrove trees and swamp-dwelling creatures but you'll never know what treasure you might find.

Kukup is a good choice if you're in need of a relaxing holiday to empty your mind and enjoy the slow pace of kampung life.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ24zQyDeqh/[/embed]

Although there are a number of shops in the town centre, don't expect the hustle and bustle of the city and shopping to be the main activity.

Drive time from JB Sentral: 2.5 hours

With a reputation for the best otak-otak Malaysia has to offer, the sleepy town of Muar was an emergency pit-stop during heavy rains my family and I encountered on the way back from Kuala Lumpur.

A surprising gem of a find, the quiet town is one that I've been wanting to revisit again, all thanks to a single dinner along Glutton Street.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/3TKEH8CeXx/[/embed]

A 100-metre stretch lined with over two dozen food stalls and vendors hawking satay, wantan mee, oyster omelette and more.

Muar is an ideal destination for a day trip because there's honestly not that much to do in town and you'll be able to finish seeing everything within a day.

The largest shopping mall is Wetex Parade where locals and tourists go to escape the heat, and you can also take a relaxing stroll around Tanjung Emas Park and enjoy scenic views of the Muar river.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BYImSg5BWZs/[/embed]

Another popular activity among tourists is scaling Gunung Ledang (also known as Mount Ophir) where there are various waterfalls and on-site parks to explore but be sure to make a booking in advance for the trek can be quite challenging.

According to one Malay legend , the mountain was home to a fairy princess so beautiful a sultan wanted to marry her, so you might want to keep your eyes peeled.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/B49yPfCnOfN/[/embed]

The laid back town of Kluang was once Johor's second most prosperous town after JB and a key inland port serving vast tracts of agricultural areas and manufacturing hubs.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BYciWL7Hvgk/[/embed]

With advancements in Malaysia's roads and air transport system however, this town has become largely forgotten until recent announcements that the Batu Pahat High-Speed Rail (HSR) station could be located only a half-hour away from Kluang.

Those who've been on weekend trips to the town can attest to a special charm about the place, imbued with new and old elements that'll make for a memorable visit.

One place you must drop in at is the original Kluang Rail station that was established in 1938. With flavours that have not changed in eight decades, soak in the old-school environment and listen to the train whistle as you sit back and sip on aromatic coffee.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BYhpIbxFJqm/[/embed]

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BEmwWnpjffW/[/embed]

Be sure to taste the famous kaya toast and buns, and go early because their nasi lemak, curry puff and mee siam tend to be sold out by noon.

For those who are always on the lookout for IG-worthy backdrops, head over to an alley in downtown Kluang decorated with 24 murals painted by local artists, each telling a story of the town.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BxE38CUFtbj/[/embed]

Alternatively, you might want to pay a visit to the UK Farm Agro Resort for a range of family-friendly activities and teach your kids about farm life.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/B5mzufVFTrp/[/embed]

For the couples, take a romantic stroll amidst a backdrop of fully-bloomed lavender flowers guaranteed to steal your breath away.

Come nightfall, don't miss the night market happening across the town at different areas on different days of the week, with vendors selling various authentic local dishes and items.

Your best bet will be to ask a local where and when their favourite one is happening and hope that you're able to catch it.

[[nid:459433]]

For those looking to surround yourself with a little nature on your holiday, a trek up Mount Lambak will be just the thing for you.

One of Kluang's highlights, Gunung Lambak is a small mountain with a summit 510m above sea level. With two stages to climb, the initial part is said to be easy with proper pathways for visitors but the second half can be quite steep and may require you to hoist yourself up.

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BVfNh0qlnbb/[/embed]

The entire trek is said to take about two hour s unless you're a seasoned hiker.

Know of any more interesting destinations for day-trippers to stop by while they're in JB? Let us know!

Visit the KTMB Integrated Ticketing System (KITS) to book your tickets for Shuttle Tebrau.

Enter your origin and destination, select your travel dates and the number of persons travelling, and you’ll be taken to the next screen to select train timings.

As you can see, tickets for 9 March 2024, the first weekend of the school holidays are mostly gone already. You can, however, search for more departure and return dates.

Make sure you have your passport on hand as you’ll need your passport details to complete your booking. You’ll have to create an account first and you can do so via email, or your Facebook or Google accounts.

KITS accepts a variety of payment options, including Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards.

If you didn’t manage to get tickets online, you can try buying them at the KTM counter at Woodlands Train Checkpoint. You’ll need to present your passport to the counter staff and pay in cash. Ticket sales end 20 minutes before train departure.

Over-the-counter tickets usually sell out during peak travel periods like weekends, public holidays and school holidays. If that happens don’t worry — you can cross over to the regular checkpoint and catch a bus to JB instead.

Step 2: Getting to Woodlands Train Checkpoint

You’ve booked your tickets online, now it’s time to find out how to get to Woodlands Train Checkpoint. It’s located in the same vicinity as the regular Woodlands Checkpoint, and is near the bus stop and drop-off point.

To get to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint, take the train to Marsiling station and exit via exit C. You’ll emerge at the bus stop opposite the train station. Take bus 856 and ride 3 stops, alight and walk to the checkpoint.

There are other buses that go to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint bus stop, and you can take bus 911 from Woodlands interchange as well.

Step 3: Getting your physical/e-ticket scanned

Head to level 2 and join the crowd of people milling around waiting for the boarding gates to open. You should aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before your train departs so that you have sufficient time to clear immigration on both sides. If your train is at 9 am, you should be at the boarding gates by 8.20 am.

You’ll need to show a hard copy or digital copy of your train ticket to the ticket staff, who will scan it as you pass through the gates.

If you encounter issues with your ticket, you might have to go to the KTM ticket office to validate your online booking. The KTM ticket office is located on the ground floor — there’s usually a queue so be warned!

The staff will probably ask you to show proof of your booking so that they can print a physical ticket for you. Ensure that you download a copy of your ticket to your phone in case you have issues accessing the internet.

Step 4: Take the 5-minute train from Singapore to JB

You’ll have to clear Singapore customs first which is a breeze at the automatic gates.

At Malaysian customs, the staff will check your passport and stamp it manually. After picking up your bag(s) from the scanning machine, proceed to board the train.

It’s free seating so park yourself by the window or aisle, depending on which you prefer. Sit back and enjoy the view of the Straits of Johor as the train zips ahead. If the train is full and there are no seats, you’ll have to stand, but what’s a few minutes?

In 5 minutes, you’ll arrive in JB Sentral, where you can feast and shop to your heart’s content. The journey from Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral should take around 30 minutes. Compared to taking a bus, car or taxi, where travelling time can be unpredictable, the KTM Shuttle Tebrau is fast and reliable.

Taking the return train from JB to Singapore

The train journey back to Singapore from JB is similar. Make sure you arrive 30 minutes before the train departs. The boarding gate opens 30 minutes before departure and closes 10 minutes before departure.

Head to the gate when it’s time to board. Your passport will serve as a boarding pass—simply scan it at the Automated Controller Gate (ACG) and you’re through. Check out the handy pictorial guide below for the step-by-step process.

train from Singapore to JB

Bear in mind that you can only check in with your passport when taking the train from JB to Singapore, but not from Singapore to JB. (Not yet, anyway!)

What is the best time to travel to JB?

Picking the train ensures you’ll be spared from the horrendous Causeway jams when you commute by car. Monday to Thursday are your best bet for a smooth and hassle-free journey. Avoid Fridays and weekends as the crowds are intense.

As for timing, mornings around 7 am and evenings around 6 pm tend to be packed as people are commuting to work and back. Try to go before 7 am and return to Singapore after 8 pm if you’re not a fan of rush hour chaos. Now that you’re all clued in on taking the KTM Shuttle Tebrau, get ready for more frequent escapes to JB!

S'poreans make day trips to JB on first day of borders fully reopening

day trip to jb from singapore

JOHOR BARU - He used to drive over to Johor Baru often to eat and buy his favourite pastries for his friends and family.

But because of the Covid-19 pandemic and its restrictions on travel, Singaporean Jeremy Chua has been unable to do so for two years.

With the full opening of land borders between Singapore and Malaysia on Friday (April 1), Mr Chua seized the opportunity for quarantine- and testing-free travel and drove over to JB.

He was speaking to The Straits Times outside Hiap Joo Bakery in Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, where he was getting his pastry fix.

He said: "I'm very happy that the border has now opened. And now whenever I am having a craving for a coconut bun or banana cake, I can just drive over."

Mr Chua, a 32-year-old financial planner, who drove over to JB alone, said that while the border has opened, the crowds have yet to return.

"I notice the place is a lot more quiet since the last time I was here. A lot of shops were not open when I drove past this stretch. I hope everything will be back to normal in the next few months, with the opening of the borders."

While more than 33,000 travellers had crossed the Causeway and Second Link as at 5pm on Friday after the borders fully reopened, this is way below the 415,000 who used the land checkpoints daily before the pandemic.

Mr Jayden Wong, 26, and his girlfriend Denise Quek, 25, were in JB on Friday even though they had not planned to do so.

This was after they found out that the traffic into JB was not so bad. Mr Wong said: "It was our day off today, which coincided with the opening of the borders, so we made an impromptu decision to come."

The two, who are both Singapore public servants, said they plan to visit a supermarket to buy snacks and then get a massage before heading home for the day.

A Singaporean, who wanted to be known only as Mr Ramli, said he drove into JB at about 7am with a friend.

The 58-year-old private-hire car driver said he was there partly to check if going to JB was smooth-going, as he plans to take his wife along next week.

He said: "Most of the shops that I have visited before are still around. The only difference is that they are less crowded than before."

The exception was a car accessory shop, which he said was busy with many Singapore-registered cars parked outside it.

He added: "Malaysians I met today welcomed us back. Even at the shop where I bought my Malaysia SIM card, the shopkeeper told me that he hopes more of us can come as soon as possible."

For Mr Chua, the pastry shop is just the first stop on his culinary quest.

"Since I have a couple of hours left before I go home, I will drive around to see if the shops that I used to patronise are still around," he said as he took his leave, adding that there is a famous shop that sells abalone noodles not far away.

The Ultimate Travel Guide from Singapore to Johor Bahru

Transtar Cross Border Service

There are several modes of transportation available for you when travelling from Singapore to Johor Bahru or vice versa. These include travelling from SG to JB by bus, taxi, train, private vehicle, or charter van/bus. However, flying is not an option because there are currently no direct flights from Singapore’s Changi Airport to Johor Bahru Senai Airport.

In this travel guide, let us take a closer look at each mode of transportation and the information related to travelling to Johor Bahru.

TRAVEL CHECKLIST

To avoid any disruptions to your trip to JB, make sure you have all of your travel necessities in order before you begin packing. In addition to a valid passport , the following documents will be necessary for you to travel to Malaysia successfully.

Vehicle Insurance

If you are driving to Johor Bahru, make sure your vehicle insurance is up to date, as all vehicles entering Malaysia are required to be insured. Examine whether it covers your time in Johor Bahru and, in the case of an unexpected event, whether the coverage amount is adequate. Before you travel, go over your insurance policy and make any necessary changes.

Travel Insurance

Even though travel insurance is no longer required to visit Malaysia, it can provide peace of mind, especially since unforeseen circumstances can disrupt your travel plans. You can purchase an annual insurance plan or a single-trip plan based on your travel needs. In any case, this purchase can be cost-effective in the long run.

Touch ‘N Go Card

When driving to Johor Bahru (JB), you can use the Touch ’n Go card to pay for highway and checkpoint tolls. For Singaporeans travelling to Malaysia, it is a dual-currency cross-border contactless smart card.

These cards feature two electronic wallets with SGD and MYR funds that are non-transferable between them. However, top-up opportunities are available in both countries at various locations.

Whether you’re travelling from SG to JB by bus or any other mode of transportation, this card will prove useful. It can be used to pay for MRT fees and parking, as well as for retail and dining, in order to earn reward points.

Vaccination

All visitors are allowed to enter Malaysia, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status. There are no COVID-19 tests or quarantine requirements upon arrival or prior to departure.

Vehicle Entry Permit

Anyone travelling to Johor Bahru in a private vehicle (foreign-registered) will require a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP). You can apply for one via the VEP-JPJ portal, and downloading a PDF of your log card from the LTA (Land Transport Authority) can help with the registration process. Until your VEP RFID tag is ready for collection, you can use the VEP confirmation slip or TNG card as a substitute. Once you have successfully registered for a VEP account, you can use it indefinitely.

BORDER CHECKPOINTS

Whether you are travelling from SG to JB by bus or using any other mode of transportation, you will pass through two border checkpoints. Woodlands CIQ and JB CIQ are the main and oldest checkpoints and are commonly referred to as the ‘First link’.This checkpoint’s building is known as ‘Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI)’.

The second and newer border checkpoints are SG Tuas CIQ and JB Second Link CIQ, which are commonly known as ‘Second Link’ or ‘Tuas.’ The building name for this checkpoint is ‘Sultan Abu Bakar.’

Both checkpoints are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and your travel destination will decide which checkpoint you will pass through on your way to Johor Bahru.

If you are travelling to Johor Bahru City Square, JB Sentral Bus Terminal , Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Jalan Dhoby, and Komtar JBCC, your bus will use the first link. These locations are ideal for food hunting, café hopping, shopping, and hanging out at malls.

However, if you want to go to Legoland, Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, or Johor Premium Outlet, your bus will travel through the second link.

HOW TO TRAVEL TO JOHOR BAHRU FROM SINGAPORE

Self-driving and private taxi.

Taking your own private vehicle or a private taxi to JB is one of the most flexible modes of transportation, because you can choose your own route and travel time. However, while both are more convenient than other modes of transportation, they are also more expensive, either due to fuel costs or service fees. Depending on the route, travel time could range from 30 minutes to an hour.

The railway is a fast and convenient way to travel from Singapore to Johor Bahru, allowing you to travel comfortably while avoiding the frequently congested causeway traffic. The Shuttle Tebrau, a KTM high-speed train, takes only 5 minutes to travel from the Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral. However, keep in mind that train tickets should be purchased as soon as possible because they are limited in availability.

Charter Van or Bus

There are numerous companies that provide dependable charter van and bus services between Singapore and JB. They offer personalised services such as luggage assistance, as well as tours of Johor Bahru. The vehicles are air-conditioned and spacious, and they will take you to the most popular destinations in JB throughout your journey.

Travelling from SG to JB by bus is one of the most popular ways for visitors to travel between these two locations, as it is the most cost-effective option. The bus fare is reasonable, and the journey takes up to 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, travel times can be influenced by weather, traffic, and travel seasons. Unless there is a delay owing to one of the aforementioned factors, the bus should reach its destination within 2 hours. The bus fare is also affected by the operator, the type of bus chosen, and the season of travel.

Cross-border service by Transtar Cross Border offers comfortable and convenient cross-border experience as you will get to sit throughout the journey and does not need to stand in a packed bus. Passengers can plan ahead of time by comparing bus prices and schedules. Buses run from 8 in the morning to 10:35 at night, and their pick-up and drop-off locations vary depending on the route they take.

day trip to jb from singapore

SINGAPORE: Are you thinking of a trip across the Causeway for some shopping, makan , or maybe a restful time of Vitamin Sea?

More and more, Johor Bahru (JB) is turning out to be THE place to go for a weekend getaway, thanks to the strong SingDollar and a tourism push from Malaysia’s government.

However, since thousands of other Singaporeans may have the same idea, when and how to go may be key to making sure your vacay, whether a day trip or a few days’ stay, is enjoyable.

day trip to jb from singapore

Worry not, fam, we gotchu. Here are our best tips and tricks for your next enjoyable journey to JB.

Best months to go to JB

Because JB is so close to Singapore, you can expect weather conditions to be pretty similar. This means it’s hot all year round, but some months are hotter than others, so dress accordingly.

If you’re hitting the beach, you can go practically any time, but the best months for beachgoers are between June and September.

Check the weather for rain before you make plans. November and December, and sometimes April, are the rainiest months.

day trip to jb from singapore

Tourism in JB is highest in December, March, and April, and you can expect flight and accommodation prices to be higher in these months. November is the month with the fewest tourists.

Best time to leave if you’re driving

It’s well documented that the traffic to JB can last four hours or even longer of your precious time, so planning well is important.

On weekdays, your best bet is to leave early; around 5am would be optimal.

Remember that more than 300,000 people cross the land border between Singapore and Malaysia daily, making it one of the busiest in the world.

There is a traffic dip between 12 noon and 3 pm, however, in case you want to take advantage of that.

The worst time to go would be between 5 and 9 pm.

On Saturdays, before 5 am is also the safest time to go, and traffic is usually light on Sundays.

When returning from JB, you might want to head to Singapore between 1pm and 3 pm on weekdays, and after 8pm, to avoid the crush.

Saturday mornings to Sunday early afternoon should not be a problem, BUT by 2pm on Sundays, traffic builds up significantly and, at times, does not let up until past 11pm.

SINGAPORE: Thinking of heading across the Causeway into Johor Bahru for a quick trip?

The 1km bridge that links Singapore and Malaysia is among the busiest land crossings in the world – but there’s no need to be daunted.

Whether it’s to visit friends and family or to shop up a storm in Malaysia, here’s what you need to know about making the journey.

The Johor Bahru-Woodlands train service remains the fastest way of crossing the Causeway for now , breezing through in just five minutes.

You’ll also clear immigration via a separate route, avoiding snaking lines often seen at the bus arrival and departure halls. Each train can also only ferry up to 320 passengers, which limits crowding.

Get your tickets online via Malaysia’s KTMB website or mobile app. No hard copy is necessary as your ticket will be digitally tagged to your passport, which will be scanned at the gate.

The current fare for a one-way ticket from Woodlands Checkpoint into Johor Bahru is RM17.80 (S$5) while it costs RM5 (S$1.40) to travel back to Singapore from the station in JB Sentral.

The train, also known as the Tebrau Shuttle, currently makes 31 trips daily – 18 from JB Sentral to Woodlands, and 13 from Woodlands to JB Sentral.

Just remember to arrive early. Gates close at Woodlands 20 minutes before departure while the gantries at JB Sentral shut 10 minutes before the train leaves.

Had a change in plans? Here’s a tip – you can cancel your ticket online for a partial refund.

Get a 75 per cent refund for cancellations made more than 72 hours before departure and 50 per cent for cancellations made within the three-day window.

The quickest way to handle payments is also via the platform’s KTM Wallet, which eliminates the need for multi-step security authentication when you are on the go.

Cross-border bus services are another pocket-friendly option - SBS Transit buses 160, 170 and 170X, as well as SMRT bus service 950.

Bus service 160 plies the route between Jurong Town Hall bus interchange and JB Sentral Bus Terminal.

Service 170 travels between Queen Street Terminal and Larkin Terminal in Johor Bahru, while 170X travels between Kranji MRT station and JB Sentral.

SMRT bus service 950 runs between Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange and JB Sentral terminal.

More information on operating hours and arrival timings is available on the Land Transport Authority’s MyTransport.SG app or via the bus operators’ websites.

But if just crossing the Causeway is your main objective, any bus will do, including the bright yellow Causeway Link buses operated by Malaysia.

Long queues at the bus arrival and departure halls are a common sight, especially during commuting hours and holidays.

Singaporeans looking to smoothen their journey can consider clearing Malaysia’s immigration via  electronic gates instead of manual ones, but terms and conditions apply.

E-gates open to Singaporeans

Singaporeans entering Johor via the Woodlands and Tuas land checkpoints can opt to clear immigration via the e-gates instead of the manual counters at the bus arrival and departure halls.  What you need

  • A Singapore passport with more than three months' validity
  • Be at least 120cm tall
  • Submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days prior to your date of arrival
  • If it’s your first time using the e-gate, enrol your fingerprints and verify your passport at the manual counter

Confused about whether you need to fill in the MDAC ? It is not necessary for Singaporeans who stick to the manual counters.

Singapore to replace passport scanning with QR codes for travellers in cars from early 2024

After clearing immigration at the Johor Bahru Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) building, you will find yourself at JB Sentral which serves as a transport hub.

It is an ideal launchpad for your next onward journey – hop on a local bus, hail a cab, board a private-hire car, or simply take the connecting overhead pathway into the popular City Square mall.

It goes without saying that congestion is to be expected, especially during peak periods, long weekends and festive occasions . Plan ahead to avoid additional angst.

If you’re driving, popular apps such as Beat the Jam and Checkpoint.sg provide insight into the current traffic situation, with snapshots from road cameras on both sides and estimated travel times.

Beat the Jam also offers a forecast of upcoming travel conditions, with projections on when congestion intensifies or eases.

Factor in buffer time for any potential delays. In addition to increased traffic flow across the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, security measures have also been stepped up in view of the situation in the Middle East.

If you prefer to sit back and enjoy the journey, opt for a cross-border taxi or private car instead.

The trip from Ban San Street terminal in Rochor to Larkin Sentral in JB via Woodlands Checkpoint is S$15 per person, or S$60 per cab, while the return trip is RM120 per taxi.

Other transport and travel platforms such as Klook also offer private car charters, with the flexibility of picking you and your family up anywhere in Singapore and heading directly to your destination.

Such arrangements are ideal for groups with children or the elderly, as this affords the convenience of not having to get down for immigration clearance or changing vehicles upon arrival.

Check your passports and ensure they have a remaining validity of at least six months.

Singapore permanent residents who have renewed their passports will have to transfer their re-entry permit to the new one. Long-term pass holders will also need to notify the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) or Manpower Ministry of any change in their passport particulars before their entry into Singapore.

Keep your eye on the traffic situation through the Land Transport Authority’s One Motoring website or via the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System installed along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) and Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). Motorists can also get updates through ICA’s Facebook and X accounts, as well as local radio broadcasts.

Drivers should also remember to have a valid and topped-up Touch ‘n Go card to pay for road charges, checkpoints and highway tolls in Malaysia. Remember to adhere to the “three-quarter tank” rule for departing Singapore-registered cars.

It also goes without saying but do drive courteously – queue-cutters will be turned away and made to queue again.

And as always, expect the unexpected. Some immigration counters at the bus and car bays may occasionally close for upgrading works . The latest updates are usually made available online via Singapore and Malaysia authorities’ social media platforms.

Day trips from Singapore

Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands

This popular hilltop retreat in Malaysia has something for everyone – whether you're heading to the casino or spending the day with your family at the kid-friendly theme parks.

EAT  Burger & Lobster Malaysia

Skip the queues at the Burger & Lobster outlets in Singapore and head to the establishment's first Southeast Asia outlet at Genting Highland's lifestyle mall, SkyAvenue. If you have specific dietary requirements, the Genting outlet is also the chain's first halal restaurant. You can't miss the restaurant's signature Chilli Lobster, which is exclusive to the Malaysia outlet.

DRINK  Powerplant Malaysia

This Korean jaunt is the place to go to for fried chicken, hot pot, and ice-cold beers – all while vibing to the live music every night.

DO  Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park

Leave your worries at the door and have an exhilarating time at the newly renovated Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park, which has state-of-the-art rides, such as the virtual reality centre with a variety of experiences from Star Wars, to Wreck-it Ralph and Ghostbusters.

STAY Resort Hotel

If you're staying the weekend, cosy up at Resort Hotel to be right in the middle of the action. The Mezzanine Deluxe Room is perfect for couples, while the Deluxe Twin room is great if you're travelling with friends. You'll have views overlooking the mountains, too.

If you do just one thing...  Don't miss the chance to embark on the Awana SkyWay, which takes you up to the peak in just 10 minutes. On the scenic ride up, you get a free stop at the Chin Swee Station, where you can explore the magnificent Chin Swee Caves Temple.

Ipoh

Once a sleepy village in the valley of the Kinta River, Ipoh has undergone a transformation over the years and is now one of Malaysia's coolest emerging destinations. It evokes a retro-vibe, reminiscent of Kuala Lumpur in the past.

EAT Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong  Ipoh is known for its hawker fare. One institution popular with both locals and tourists is Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong, where you can find one of Ipoh's delicacies: bean sprouts with chicken rice.

DRINK  Restaurant Ah Chow  Ipoh is the birthplace of Malaysia's famous white coffee, and you can easily find it in retro cafes scattered throughout the city. Besides the original Old Town White Coffee Shop, check out local favourite Restaurant Ah Chow. Here's a tip: Ask for the "secret weapon" menu option, their kopi o kosong – which is essentially white coffee prepared with a hint of alcohol.

DO Ulu Geroh Rafflesia Trail

Trek the Ulu Geroh Rafflesia Trail, located a little way outside of Ipoh in the village of Ulu Geroh in Gopeng. Besides the largest flower in the world, you will also chance upon rubber plantations, durian orchards, and quaint local villages. However, take note that to trek along the trail, you will need a Semai Orang Asli guide from the village.

STAY Sekeping Kong Heng Hotel One of the first boutique hotels in Ipoh that sparked its new identity, Sekeping Kong Heng Hotel takes over a preserved three-storey neo-classical building. Don't skip the eponymous famous coffee shop on the ground floor, serving up amazing coffee and some of the best local dishes in town.

If you do just one thing...  Explore Ipoh's historic laneways, such as Concubine Lane, for its street art and culture precincts. Ipoh's preserved architecture is a sight to behold, consisting of heritage shophouses with Chinese and British colonial elements – complete with five-foot ways and pretty shutters and tiles.

Malacca

If you're looking for an idyllic heritage town to spend a quiet weekend in, the charming and quaint Malacca is only a few hours drive away from Singapore. Rows of shophouses, Peranakan antiques, winding laneways and plentiful of good food at every corner, this town is your dream road trip destination. There's history, heaps of culture, too much food and many happy photo opportunities to be had.

EAT Pak Putra

Despite all the guide books telling you to eat your weight in assam laksa and chicken rice balls, skip the advice and try out Pak Putra, an open-air, open-at-night-only establishment. For the best naan you'll have, amazing Tandoori chicken, and assorted curries, this is a must-go when you're in town.

DRINK The Daily Fix

Blink and you might miss this buzzy cafe located within a gift store. You'll be surprised to find that this is no sleepy, quiet spot. Still, if you do bag a spot, the coffee is the best in town. Rose lattes, ice mochas and the cold-brewed tea (ask the staff to see what's brewing for the day), it's the erfect complement to your short getaway. The kids will love the selection of fluffy pancakes in gula melaka, chocolate chip and more.

DO The Clay House

Here's a different sort of holiday shopping: it's where you take the time to make your own wares to bring home. Drop by the rustic store and pottery studio where you can sign up for a session to get your hands dirty. From sculpting to glazing, you'll be bringing home your own handmade cups, bowls, lamps, aromatherapy burners and more.

STAY 1825 Gallery Hotel

When in Malacca, stay by the river, just so you won't be too far from all the good food and good spots in town. This colonial-style heritage building is located just outside the main Jonker Street area but still close to everything. Rooms are spacious so if you're rooming with the family, there's enough sleeping space for everyone. Splurge on a room upgrade with river views, a balcony and your own personal whirlpool tub.

If you do just one thing... Besides just eating and cafe-hopping, Malacca is huge on its antique stores as well. From Chinese porcelain stools to crystals and gemstones (think agate face rollers and rose quartz stone massagers), batik and fabric stores to rattan furniture shops, it's a different kind of shopping sans malls here in Malacca.

Penang

A popular weekend getaway for its famous hawker food, street art, history and culture, Penang is a great pick for a quick getaway from Singapore. Whether you choose to go on a road trip with friends or catch a quick and cheap flight there, the first thing you will surely do when you reach is to go on an eating binge.

EAT Kafe Khoon Hiang

When in Penang, you have to try one of the most famous local offerings, char kway teow. Don't think that just because you've tasted the ones here, you've tasted it all. The charred flat rice noodles are tossed with juicy prawns, crunchy bean sprouts and scrambled duck eggs.

DRINK The Canteen At ChinaHouse

When hanging out in a new town on holiday, kicking back with a cold drink in hand and all-around chill vibes are important. At The Canteen, it's all about dressing down and enjoying the nightly live music covering genres from jazz to indie, while sipping on your favourite cocktail.

DO  Penang National Park

If you have had enough of culture and the food, pack your bags and hike the Penang National Park. See the best of Penang's rainforests and beaches in this huge park. Enjoy spectacular views from canopy trails or sink your feet into the pristine sand on the beach.

STAY Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

If it looks familiar to you, you might recognise it from an important scene in Crazy Rich Asians. The mansion also happens to be a boutique hotel with 18 personalised rooms – and all of the rooms are different and tastefully decorated with 19th-century antiques.

If you do just one thing... Hunt for murals on the street of Penang. Penang's famous and colourful murals have made for Instagram fodder. There's one on almost every wall so get exploring and remember to snap some pics.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur

Leaving the city to another city? Kuala Lumpur it is. There's much to see and do (and eat) in this city that seemingly never sleeps. From suppers in the open air to fancy air-conditioned malls, the familiarity might even remind you of Singapore at times but with a myriad of new adventures waiting for you.

EAT Wong Ah Wah Restaurant

When in KL be sure to make some time for some barbecue chicken wings – possibly the best you'll ever have at this no-frills open-air zi char place at food street, Jalan Alor. While you won't go wrong with the standard dishes like salted egg yolk chicken, braised vegetables and fried rice, it's the chicken that's barbecued right in front of you that is the absolute standout. Brined overnight, the end result is a smoky, salty and just-the-right-amount of oily masterpiece.

DRINK PS150

Have fun trying to find this speakeasy in KL's Chinatown, Petaling Street. Housed in an old shophouse that was once a brother, the space is unassuming, intimate (think In The Mood For Love vibes) and romantic all at once. The drink menu is divided into five distinct eras in the history of cocktails itself: Vintage, Prohibition, Tiki, Disco and Contemporary.

DO Batu Caves

Interestingly enough, one thing to do in KL is to get out of KL. A 30-minute train ride, or 13km from the city is the majestic Batu Caves worth seeing in the flesh. Batu Caves is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones. Be prepared to be climbing steps all day and exploring the depths of several caves – remember to bring your cameras!

STAY Alila Bangsar Hotel

You're in for an urban retreat when you book a room at the new Alila Bangsar. City life away from the city will never be this chic. With tasteful and modern decor, an amazing pool with a view, pool-side yoga and impeccable room service, it's great to get away from downtown life once in a while.

If you do just one thing... If sticking to central KL is your prerogative, then all you can is shop and eat to your heart' content. Go mall-hopping along Bukit Bintang and be impressed by the sheer amount of boutiques and shops in a major mall. Ready your cards, you'll be using it lot. When it comes to food, you'll be spoilt for choice with the in-mall restaurants or venture out to Jalan Alor for a taste of hawker life in Malaysia.

Pulau Ubin

Time-travel back to the golden kampung days at the beloved Pulau Ubin, a rustic island off the north-eastern coast of Singapore. Located just a 15-minute boat ride from mainland Singapore, you can realistically explore the whole island (about 10.2 square kilometres) in just a day.

EAT  Cheong Lian Yuen Coffee Shop

This unassuming dining establishment near the jetty is the perfect place to wind down after cycling or hiking around the island. Tuck into a mouthwatering selection of fresh seafood with an ice cold beer before getting on the ferry back to the mainland. Popular dishes here are the pig trotter bee hoon, oysters omelette, salted egg sotong and mud crab with black pepper.

DRINK Ah Ma Drink Stall

Stop by this iconic drink stall, housed in a distinctive blue structure in Jalan Jelutong, for a fresh coconut. Don't forget to say hi to the friendly Madam Ong Ang Kui, who has been running the stall for more than 20 years.

DO Soak in everything Pulau Ubin has to offer

There's plenty to do: whether you choose to cycle its unpaved trails, hike up hills for stunning views of abandoned granite quarries, kayak the circumference of the island, or dust off your binoculars out to watch the kingfishers and bulbul birds that inhabit the tidal flats and mangroves.  For more in-depth info, read our guide to Pulau Ubin  here .

STAY Set up camp

While you can't stay in a hotel on Pulau Ubin, you can embrace the island's wilderness and set up a tent at one of the three campsites on the island: namely Jelutong, Mamam, and Endut Senin. Mamam Campsite boasts uninterrupted views of the sea, with Malaysia in the background.

If you do just one thing... Wander around Chek Jawa Wetlands, one of Singapore's richest ecosystems. A 1.1km boardwalk runs along the coast and mangrove area, giving visitors a chance to get closer to nature. After which, climb up a 20-metre-tall viewing tower for a 360-degree panorama of the island.

Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru

Cross the causeway via public transport or in the comfort of your car from Woodlands Checkpoint and you'll find yourself in the heart of Johor Bahru. The JB immigration building is directly connected to City Square Mall, where you can find brands such as H&M and Uniqlo priced more affordable, thanks to the strong Singapore dollar. The surrounding area is also home to plenty of cool restaurants and cafés where you can while the day away.

EAT The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen

Out of all the cafés we've been to in Johor Bahru, The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen undoubtedly serve the best food. Try the soft shell crab bao and the piping hot churros served with your choice of dip: there's salted caramel, dark chocolate, Nutella hazelnut and salted egg yolk to choose from.

DRINK Bev C

Johor Bahru isn't exactly known for its buzzy bar scene so swap the booze out for some caffeine instead. The house special at Bev C is the espresso ice cube: shots of coffee frozen into ice cubes served with some milk.

DO Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park

Just a half an hour drive from Johor Sentral lies Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park. The family-friendly theme park is home to the Supersurf, a waterslide with six high-speed lanes.

STAY Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru

Conveniently situated within JB Sentral, Doubletree by Hilton makes for the perfect base for exploring the rest of the city. The modern hotel also comes equipped with a swimming pool and gym to work off those calories from all that café hopping.

If you do just one thing... Queue up for buns baked in a charcoal oven at Hiap Joo Bakery. The banana cake at this old-school institution is unbeatable too – we guarantee you won't stop at one slice.

Iskandar Puteri

Iskandar Puteri

Home to some of Southeast Asia’s most epic theme parks like Legoland Malaysia and the Hello Kitty Indoor Theme Park, the thriving city of Iskandar Puteri is well worth crossing the causeway for – especially with the kids in tow.

EAT Spice Grill

Leave the touristy eats at the theme parks behind and make the drive down to Puteri Harbour instead. There, you'll be greeted by a host of better options such as Spice Grill, a stylish Indian restaurant that also has Western offerings.

DRINK Rock Bottom Kitchen & Bar

During happy hour, Rock Bottom Kitchen & Bar offers ridiculously affordable alcohol. Think $3 drinks and Bud Light draft, those are some truly rock-bottom prices.

DO Legoland Malaysia

Spend a day (or two) at Legoland Malaysia, the country's first international theme park. Ride the towering roller coasters or immerse yourself in a captivating 4D movie experience. Whichever the case, the impressive park promises to fascinate both children and adults alike.

STAY Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour

Aside from its incredibly convenient location, Hotel Jen at Puteri Harbour also offers a luxe infinity pool overlooking the glistening marina.

If you could do just one thing... Get more for less at Southeast Asia’s first luxury premium brand outlet – Johor Premium Outlets. The retail paradise houses internationally-renowned designer brands like Burberry, Coach and more.

Desaru

Spellbinding white sand beaches and azure waters render this relatively underrated island the perfect place for a fulfilling getaway. Simply hop on a 30-minute ferry ride from Changi Ferry Terminal to unravel the diverse offerings of Desaru – everything from ostrich farms and fruit plantations to posh golf courses.

EAT Jade Garden Seafood Corner

Treat yourself to a decadent seafood dinner at Jade Garden Seafood Corner – expect succulent lobster and bamboo clams, to name a few.

DRINK Beach Hut

Located within Lotus Desaru Beach Resort, this shack along the coast is a restaurant by day and bar by night. Grab a coconut or beers by the bottle.

DO The Els Club Desaru Coast

The sprawling club consists of 45 holes spread across two world-class golf courses. The stunning Ocean Course offers a range of customisable golf lessons at its academy for both serious golfers and beginners alike.

STAY Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast

Choose from one of the renowned hotels housed at Desaru Coast – a unique integrated destination resort that spans across a pristine beachfront. In particular, the Hard Rock Hotel entices with “rock star” treatment for vacationers and business travellers alike.

Sentosa

There's something for everyone at Sentosa. Whether you're a high roller looking to make your fortune, a thrill-seeker wanting to scream your heart out on a high-speed coaster, Michelin-star hunting foodie or a marine life enthusiast learning more about our ocean depths, the island has you covered. And if all that sounds a little too much for you, you can always park yourself at one of its three beaches and laze the day away.

Dine at Asia's first Michelin chef showcase experience. Every quarter, a different guest chef takes over the kitchen at Curate to present his or her award-winning menu.

DRINK Tanjong Beach Club

Dig your feet into the sand as you lounge by the beach with a tiki cocktail by Tanjong Beach Club. On Sunday, DJs turn the beachfront into a dance floor from the afternoon 'til late.

DO AJ Hackett

Here's one for the daredevils. Take a leap of faith by jumping from a height of 47m at AJ Hackett, Singapore's first bungy jumping facility.

STAY W Singapore Sentosa Cove

There are plenty of family-friendly hotels and luxe cabana stays on the island but for something sexier, we recommend making the trek out to W Singapore Sentosa Cove. Located in a quieter corner of the island, the hotel is perfect for couples looking for a little privacy.

If you do just one thing... Spend the day at Universal Studios Singapore, home to Battlestar Galactica and other fun rides that get the heart racing.

Batam

Take a ferry across the Singapore Strait to the charming Indonesian island of Batam. From serene beaches to an enthralling nightlight scene, this oft-overlooked island makes for a more than a decent getaway. Look past its sleazy reputation to unearth an array of exciting activities unique to the alluring destination.

EAT Golden Prawn 933

Head over to Golden Prawn 933 for a leisurely lunch that guarantees to satisfy. Serving up delectable plates of affordably priced freshly-caught seafood, the renowned restaurant proves that it’s worth the hype. Alternatively, join fellow tourists as they flock to the iconic A&W café for authentic root beer floats – creamy vanilla soft serve atop fizzy root beer.

DRINK Brewsky & Co

Pay a visit to one of the island’s reputable microbreweries. Brewsky & Co has delicious cocktails and great bar games as the cherry on top.

DO Batam Cable-ski Park

If you’re looking for adventure, choose from a variety of exhilarating water sports. In particular, opt to go jet skiing at Batam Cable-ski Park. Prices start from $25 for a one-hour pass but opt for the full-day pass that's priced at $65.

STAY Montigo Resorts The distinctive white and blue colour palette of Montigo Resorts’ façade affords you the luxury of experiencing a slice of Santorini without having to catch the dreaded 17-hour flight. If that wasn’t enough to warrant your stay, the posh villa-style resort boasts an exclusive private pool with unparalleled views of the surrounding Nongsa waters.

If you do just one thing… Relish a fragrant slice of one of Indonesia’s famed traditional specialties, Kueh Lapis – an indulgent layered cake – from the revered Layers Batam. Its range of conveniently located outlets include Nagoya Hill Mall and Batam Center Point.

Bintan

Long established as an upscale playground for the spendthrift, the idyllic archipelago is spoiled with pristine beaches and picturesque landscapes. Yet, hidden amidst an abundance of high-end luxury resorts are rustic old-school fishing villages that intrigue with their grit. It’s nice to know that a mere 50-minute ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal can transport you to a versatile and multi-faceted holiday destination like Bintan.

EAT Nasi Padang

Experience Indonesian-style Nasi Padang in its most authentic form as you tuck into the generous servings at Pujasera Food Centre’s Lamak Basamo or Rumah Makan Sederhana in Tanjung Pinang.

Touted as Bintan’s veteran nightclub, Silk promises a night to remember as you immerse yourself in live band music with a jazzy beverage in hand.

DO Air Adventure

Learn to fly at Air Adventure, a flying club at Lagoi Bay. But if all that sounds a little too ambitious for you then opt for a 20-minute ride on a seaplane that will accord you stunning views of the island. There's even an option to purchase a video recording of your flight so you can take your memories home.

STAY Banyan Tree Bintan

Tucked away in a verdant rainforest, the lavish villas of Banyan Tree Bintan offer breathtaking views of the South China Sea and a tranquil atmosphere. In line with its luxurious setting, hotel staff provide impeccably intuitive service catering to every need and want.

My day in JB: Getting across the Causeway and back home — harder than it looks on Day 1 of border reopening

SINGAPORE — When my editor asked on Monday if I could head to Johor Baru on Friday (April 1) to report on the reopening of the Singapore-Malaysia land border, I immediately said yes.

Loraine Lee

SINGAPORE/ JOHOR BARU — When my editor asked on Monday (March 28) if I could head to Johor Baru on Friday to report on the reopening of the Singapore-Malaysia land border, I immediately said yes.

Admittedly, I was blinded by the excitement of finally travelling out of Singapore for the first time in two years. I couldn't wait to finally dust off my passport and start filling its empty pages with immigration stamps.

After all, travel restrictions had been eased, so it should all be smooth-sailing, right?

Boy, was I wrong.

In the days leading up to Friday, I found myself ensnared in a nightmare of red tape and confusing app design.

For starters, registering myself on the MySejahtera application — the Malaysian version of TraceTogether and a requirement for anyone entering Malaysia — posed a hurdle as it requires a Malaysian residential address.

As I was only there for the day and was not booking a hotel stay, I did not have a Malaysian address to provide. Luckily, TODAY photographer Ili Nadhirah Mansor — who was also on the same assignment — had a family friend in Johor, so we registered our accounts with his address.

As it turned out, we may not have needed to worry about this after all, but more on that later.

After registration, we were then confused by the app's interface, where instructions about how to verify our vaccination certificates were different from that provided on MySafeTravel, the Malaysian website which outlines what foreigners have to do before entering Malaysia.

We had declared our vaccinations using the app's Overseas Vaccination Details button, which later informed us it would take up to five working days to be verified. We had two days until our trip.

This was separate from the MySafeTravel vaccination declaration link, which took us about two days to get a verified confirmation — just in time for the trip. However, it takes an additional two days for vaccination details to appear on our MySejahtera app.

Being the kiasu  Singaporeans we were, we registered through both methods.

We faced another stumble when filling out the Malaysian travel declaration form, which aside from requiring a Malaysian residential location, also asks for a Malaysian contact person, which Ili and I did not have.

We did find some helpful information on the MySafeTravel website, which provided step-by-step instructions on what travellers should do before entering the country. But it did not address concerns such as whether our fully vaccinated status would be reflected on the MySejahtera app in time for our departure, and why our profiles indicated us as Malaysian.

We sent a message to the MySejahtera helpdesk on Wednesday and waited. And waited. By Friday morning, the day we had to embark on our assignment, we still had not received a response.

As we made our way to the Causeway and through immigration, I was fretting about how I would explain to my editors why I got turned away at immigration.

But as it turned out, my anxiety was for nothing. We breezed through Malaysian immigration, and the customs official did not even ask us to open the MySejahtera app.

Was that plain luck or were our traveller declarations and verified vaccination status available to immigration staff on their computer systems? It's hard to tell.

In any case, within 20 minutes, Ili and I were in Malaysia.

The process of checking into buildings and shops in Johor Baru was similar to Singapore's, and we had no problems with entering any premises despite the MySejahtera application still displaying our vaccination status as "unvaccinated".

day trip to jb from singapore

We spent the next seven hours in Johor Baru, speaking to shopkeepers and day trippers and by the end of it we were satisfied that we had put in a good day's work. We were ready for a smooth return home.

But there was another surprise at the Singapore immigration checkpoint.

Ili, our driver Darius, and I had contracted Covid-19 within the last 90 days — and are fully recovered, of course — and we had declared this in our Singapore Arrival Card, which we had to fill out two days before our trip.

This had, for some reason, triggered an alert in the immigration system and we had to wait around 10 minutes in the car while the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer conducted some checks before letting us through.

TODAY has asked ICA about what occurred but understands that since April 1, the Singapore Arrival Card no longer requires users to declare if they have contracted Covid-19 in the last 90 days.

I was also surprised that the immigration officer asked us for our HealthHub vaccination certificate. I had printed out my vaccination certificate from notarise.gov.sg, thinking that would have sufficed for any official checks, but it was declined.

Thankfully, Ili and I had the HealthHub app on our mobile phones and could retrieve our vaccination certificates quickly.

“ Looking back, while all these kinks in the immigration process — on both sides of the land border — were stressful, I suppose they should come as no surprise as we are all in the early days of a 'new normal'. TODAY journalist Loraine Lee ”

Looking back, while all these kinks in the immigration process — on both sides of the land border — were stressful, I suppose they should come as no surprise as we are all in the early days of a "new normal".

And they were worth the experience of being able to leave the country for a bit and cross over into Johor Baru, even for a day.

In fact,  I think I'll head back to Johor Bahru for a quick getaway soon — and not for work.

Not just to eat and shop, Singaporeans are also going to JB for dental care

SINGAPORE: Jo Lim was looking for a solution to a root canal issue that had been bothering her. She had sought out diagnoses and treatment plans from dental clinics in Singapore, but an appointment would either take a long time to schedule or cost a hefty sum.

After doing her due diligence as a consumer, the Singaporean financial representative eventually settled on Dr Shim Chung Nam at The Smile Dental Lounge.

The difference? Dr Shim’s clinic is located in Mount Austin, across the Causeway in Johor Baru (JB).

“He’s very gentle, detailed and explained a lot to me. My experience was calm and painless, it helped me build trust in his treatment,” said Lim, who “sampled” his skills through a scaling session in October 2023.

Her experience convinced her to arrange a next appointment with Dr Shim for the more complex root canal procedure a week later.

Dental clinics in JB have increasingly become a viable option for Ms Lim and others from Singapore.

There are more than 20 dental clinics operating within a 6km distance of the checkpoint available to would-be patients from the Republic, with dozens more when venturing further out of JB’s city centre.

These Singapore-based patients say they are primarily drawn by an array of restorative and cosmetic teeth treatments offered at a fraction of the cost of their equivalents in Singapore and little to no compromise on the quality of care.

For instance, while a course of treatment for in-clinic teeth whitening in Singapore may start from S$900, similarly US-imported products at private clinics in JB would cost only around RM1,300 (S$370).

Dr Jolene Lai, principal dentist at Pink and White Dental in Jalan Tebrau, told The Straits Times: “Teeth whitening is a very popular procedure. We used to have only one whitening light, but because of the demand, we got another one, and we usually get booked out for groups of friends or family who want to get their whitening treatment done at the same time.”

She added that her clinic also gets many inquiries for clear aligners and wisdom teeth procedures.

Supply chain manager Feldman Kuah said that for the same amount in Singapore, getting his dental care sorted in JB would give him more bang for his buck, a consideration made more pertinent as he works with a claimable corporate dental allowance amounting to around $400 a year.

He added that costs are maximised when his family of four goes for dental treatment together in JB, usually for bi-annual cleaning services.

“A regular scaling could easily cost more than $100 for one person in Singapore. In JB, that could be just RM200 plus,” said Kuah, who has been going to E&E Dental in Taman Abad, less than 3km away from the Singapore checkpoint.

The allure of the city’s other offerings are also such that Singaporeans like Kuah can plan a day trip to JB prioritising a dental visit, which sets them up for shopping and feasting pursuits the rest of the day.

“You just need to do it twice a year, it’s quite easy to plan,” he said, adding that he draws the line at an emergency such as a toothache that would require more immediate attention in Singapore.

Selecting a dentist she could trust was important to Lim, since her unpleasant school dental encounters imprinted on her a “trauma and phobia of visiting dentists”.

Dr Shim had arrived at the same diagnosis as the dentists she consulted in Singapore, but having been quoted around $5,000 by Singapore dentists, she spent only half that amount in JB for two root canals that also involved two dental crowns.

While Lim acknowledged that “we save a lot due to the currency exchange”, she reiterated that “it’s the dentist’s quality, experience and skills” that matter most.

“If the dentist is not skilful, I would not proceed and would have come back to dentists in Singapore,” she said.

Dr Shim, who founded his clinic in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic in July 2020, has noticed an increased patient flow in the past couple of months, with clients now needing to book appointments two weeks in advance for weekend slots.

Most of his patients from Singapore – a figure he estimates at 60 per cent of his total clientele – have been seeking him out since 2022.

Technology has helped him to cater for day-trippers to his clinic on tight schedules with equipment such as intra-oral scanners and 3D printers available to record patients’ teeth impressions and facilitate same-day retainers, he said, noting that his patients from Singapore are treated and also charged the same as other patients.

Clinics in JB may also offer patients a change of pace relative to their experience with dentists in Singapore.

Dr Chris Tan, who runs Family Dental with his wife in Setia Tropika, said: “Some patients gave us feedback that it is very hard to get appointments in Singapore clinics, and their scaling sessions always finished within 15 minutes, while mine take longer and are more detailed.”

To Dr Lai, it is important her clients make an informed, educated decision on their course of treatment.

“Some people’s pain tolerance may be different to the next person’s,” said Dr Lai, who has been practising for 14 years. “A lot of people feel judged when they see a dentist. So when they come in, we make them feel like they can say they are scared of us, make a joke out of it, let them talk and share their concerns.”

She counts six to seven clients from Singapore out of every 10 she receives, but notes that not all may be “true-blue” Singaporean, given the diaspora of Malaysians working in the Republic. There are also Singapore-based expatriates who go to JB for dental care.

A favourite question of hers is “How did you find us?” and her clients have told her that Pink and White is featured on some Facebook groups for expat wives in Singapore, apart from the Google reviews and many word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and past patients.

A personal touch helps. Dr Lai, for instance, sometimes gives a lift to some of her Singaporean patients to the checkpoint, which is about 5km away from her clinic.

And it is not always about the money. She also advises some of them to use their MediSave funds in Singapore where possible for procedures such as wisdom tooth surgeries or implants, as prices may be about the same.

One consideration for Singaporean patients is the fact that certain dental treatments might require medical leave as they recover.

According to the Ministry of Manpower, Singapore employers have the discretion to grant sick leave for medical certificates issued by overseas doctors.

Singapore Human Resources Institute’s executive director Alvin Aloysius Goh cautioned that local companies are not obligated to accept overseas dental medical certificates.

However, some companies do accept MCs for overseas dental emergencies or approve leave for medically required dental procedures, such as wisdom tooth extractions, he said.

Joshua Yim, chief executive of recruitment firm Achieve Group, said recognition of overseas-issued MCs will still come down to each employer’s existing policies, with multinational firms accustomed to having employees deployed overseas being more likely to allow for overseas-issued MCs.

The importance of a Singapore-based clientele to dentists in JB was made the most apparent during the pandemic, when the borders were largely closed for travel from March 18, 2020, to March 31, 2022, meaning a large proportion of their clients were stuck in Singapore and “everything halted”, Dr Lai said, as she did not receive an income for almost 18 months.

But after the borders reopened, travellers from Singapore have returned in record numbers especially before long holidays like the Good Friday weekend that saw around 510,000 clearing the land checkpoints to JB on March 28.

E&E Dental’s Dr Edmund Ooi has accepted the fact that the punctuality of around half his clientele is dependent on the Causeway’s traffic.

“We have to be ready, if patients may be late,” he said, adding that a combination of reminders and constant communication with his patients helps manage expectations on arrival times, while also keeping their waiting times to a maximum of 30 minutes.

JB dentists described their Singaporean clients as being knowledgeable about their oral healthcare, which Dr Ooi said makes them easier to explain treatment plans to, especially when the recommended course of treatment is not the cheapest.

And while the experience of soldiering through the pandemic has made dentists in JB intimately aware of the need to build up a solid base of local patients too, they are more than happy to welcome patients from Singapore.

With greater mobility increasing the pool of options to consumers, competition may not be restricted to that within one’s country’s borders these days.

“We’re all colleagues, we go to the same conferences,” said Dr Lai of her Singaporean counterparts. “There might be different reasons that drive the patients over, but when patients feel they can trust dentists here in JB as well as the ones they’re used to in Singapore, then ultimately it’s their choice.” - The Straits Times/ANN
