How to Plan a Trip to LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark! Hotels, Passes, Things To Do!

Categories Denmark , Europe

Visiting LEGOLAND in Billund, Denmark was a huge highlight of our summer and I highly recommend going, especially if you’re a family of LEGO lovers. And yes, you should make the effort to visit the Denmark park even if you live in the UK / overseas because it’s so worth it!

There are many LEGOLAND Theme Parks around the world – Windsor, UK, Dubai, California, but Billund in Denmark is the home of LEGO and that’s a huge reason to go to the Danish LEGOLAND ®  Billund  Resort .

In this Denmark travel blog, I’m going to give you all the information you need to plan a trip to Billund LEGOLAND including how long to visit, flight tips, where to stay in Billund, the LEGO Hotels in Billund, ticket information and things to do in Billund.

Planning a Trip to LEGOLAND Billund

LEGOLAND Billund

If you’re reading this post, you probably don’t live in Denmark and therefore you need to travel abroad to visit Denmark . And you may be thinking.. is LEGOLAND in Denmark worth it? So before we get into all the practical information, let’s touch on this,

Find What You're Looking For Easily Here!

Is it worth going to LEGOLAND Billund?

The town of Billund in Denmark is in fact the home of LEGO as a Danish carpenter first created the LEGO brick in 1930. So if you’re a LEGO lover, going here feels pretty special.

But it’s not just the feel, IT IS special . So much of the town outside of the LEGOLAND theme park is LEGO-related too which we loved!

Walking from LEGOLAND to LEGO House (which is a must-visit as well!) we passed the LEGO corporate offices which had been designed with LEGO-looking pieces and a huge LEGO man outside.

LEGOLAND Billund, LEGO House from the outside

Accommodation-wise, there’s lots of LEGO-themed accommodation in Billund which range in price and room size and there are far more fun options than any other LEGOLAND location in the world.

Denmark is always rated highly as one of the happiest countries in the world and this is largely down to how well Denmark is looked after and therefore how happy its residents are and we could feel this in Billund.

We found Billund a total pleasure to walk around. It’s clean, tidy and organised and once inside the LEGOLAND theme park where things can often get chaotic, dirty and long, despite visiting on a Saturday in the summer, we found LEGOLAND Billund theme park to be well maintained , the queues were not too long, the staff were nice and the people around us were all polite which had a hugely positive effect on our experience, especially when comparing it to theme parks in the UK.

If you’re visiting Denmark as part of a longer Scandinavia itinerary … I highly recommend a stop in Billund to visit LEGOLAND!

How long do you need to spend at LEGOLAND Billund?

We landed at 15:30 and flew home the next at 21:00 and it was a really perfect amount of time.

I’m really glad we only stayed for 1 night in Billund , especially as accommodation costs were high. I would have loved it if we could have got a morning flight though so we had 2 full days as by the time we got out of the airport and to the hotel at 16:30, it was too late to enter LEGO House or the theme park.

Instead, we spent time in the hotel which was a lot of fun and then took a walk into town to get dinner and play outside LEGO House so it ended up being a beautiful evening still.

LEGOLAND Billund, LEGO House steps from above with blue skies

1 day at LEGOLAND Billund is totally doable and if you really wanted to push it and the flights worked, you could do a day trip by getting an early morning flight to Billund and a late flight home. Of course, be prepared for a potential flight delay messing up your timing, especially if you fly with Ryanair as we did (although we did fly on time with them this time thankfully!).

LEGOLAND and LEGO House in 1 day

LEGO House and LEGOLAND are 2 separate attractions a 20-25 minute walk / 5 minute bus ride apart . I’ll go more into LEGO House later in this post but if you / your kids love LEGO it’s a must-visit as well as the theme park.

We managed both in one day (just!). We were at the gates of LEGOLAND park at 9:30 am and were therefore one of the first in at 10:00. We left at 13:00 to go to LEGO House getting there at about 13:20. Left LEGO House at 15:30 and getting back to LEGOLAND at 16:00.

LEGOLAND Billund, entry gates in the morning

TIP: You can leave and re-enter LEGOLAND Park within the same day but you must get a stamp on your hand when exiting the gates.

LEGOLAND’s closing time changes depending on the time of year . For us, it closed at 19:00 but all rides finished an hour early so we had 2 hours to do rides and spent 30 minutes after the rides finished walking around MINILAND before leaving at 18:30. It was a busy day but do-able with 3 kids aged 7, 10 and 16!

I wish we had 2 days in Billund though because my stepsons loved LEGO House!

We have so much LEGO at home and although they love theme parks and we all loved the LEGO-themed rides and areas at LEGOLAND, they just love building stuff and LEGO House is so amazingly creative , I wish we had been able to spend a whole day / 5-6 hours there just letting them play, and getting our money’s worth from the ticket.

In future, I’d love to fly us all back to Billund, either for the day or for a short 1 day, 1-night trip and just go to LEGO House !

How to get to Billund, Denmark?

I love looking at flights on Skyscanner and when searching ‘Everywhere’ from Manchester, I’d often see good flights to Denmark Billund and be like.. but what’s in Billund??

Turns out, LEGOLAND is there and because there are not many other reasons to visit Billund, flights can be reasonably priced .

We paid £35.00 pp for our flights from Manchester, UK which we thought was such a bargain! Also, because we stayed for just 1 night, we only took backpacks and therefore didn’t pay any extra for luggage on the flight.

LEGOLAND Billund, Billund Airport at Mainland

If fights don’t work for you to Billund, you could look at flights to Copenhagen , hire a car and do the 3-hour drive or go by public transport consisting of trains and buses taking around 4 hours.

How to get from Billund Airport to LEGOLAND RESORT?

Another one of the things we loved about Billund and this trip is just how close everything is .

Billund Airport is just a 10-minute car ride or a 30-minute walk away from the LEGOLAND Theme Park and Hotels. Billund has a regular bus schedule which stops at the airport and around the theme park,. hotels and town centre.

There’s even a free hourly shuttle bus around the town and airport (I believe this is only in July & August ) which we got from the airport.

LEGOLAND Billund, free shuttle bus in Billund

Do you need to hire a car in Billund?

By default, my husband will hire a car when we go away. I had to tell him many times that ‘we won’t need one here’ because everything is so close together and thankfully, I was right.

Technically, we could have, but it wouldn’t have saved us that much time as we got on with the bus just fine and hopefully it saved us some money.

If you do plan to stay longer and visit more of the things to do around Billund, you will need to hire a car or work out public transport.

TIP: Billund is so small, you could arrive, not hire a car from the airport for the day you plan to spend at LEGOLAND then the next day, easily get the bus to the airport and pick up a hire car to explore the nearby areas. It will probably save you money on a day’s car hire and doesn’t take too long to pop to the airport and get the car the next day.

LEGO Accommodation in Billund

Billund is not short of accommodation and there is a variety depending on what you want, from hotel rooms, apartments and cabins.

The majority of the hotel accommodation is LEGO-themed , with some apartments on offer in the town which are privately owned and not LEGO-themed.

We stayed in the LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL which we loved! It opened in 2019 and is still really new and well-maintained.

I chose this hotel over HOTEL LEGOLAND and LEGO HOLIDAY VILLAGE because it had the biggest rooms. There were 5 of us with 1 child being a teenager so we needed our double bed plus 2 bunk beds whereas the other hotels offered just 1 bunk bed. I booked the Superior Dragons Knight Room.

Where to stay in Billund, Denmark?

There are 3 main LEGO-themed accommodations:

  • LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL
  • HOTEL LEGOLAND
  • LEGO HOLIDAY VILLAGE

LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL – Offers 3 themes – Dragons Knight, Wizard and Princess. They also offer 2 sizes – standard and superior.

Check out rates and availability at LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL here!

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, outside of LEGOLAND Castle Hotel

HOTEL LEGOLAND – Offers a few themes – Adventure, Pirate, Treasure, LEGO Friends, LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Movie, and park view rooms. These also differ in size.

Check out rates and availability at HOTEL LEGOLAND here!

LEGO HOLIDAY VILLAGE – This village is made up of 3 different accommodation types which are all booked individually too – LEGOLAND NINJAGO Cabins , LEGOLAND Wilderness Barrels & Cabins , LEGOLAND Wild West Cabins & LEGOLAND Pirates´ Inn Motel .

If you are not bothered by a LEGO theme and are only visiting Billund quickly, Billund Airport Hotel is well located within the airport grounds. The public bus stops here after the main airport stop and then continues to run into the town and to LEGOLAND. Billund Airport Hotel is a reasonable price and looks really new!

What is the best LEGO hotel in Billund?

LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL is definitely the newest with the most facilities . It looks the coolest from the outside with so many features inside and out from talking LEGO statues, LEGO play areas and LEGO competitions all guests can enter.

LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL has 3 playgrounds, a fitness centre, a restaurant and a shop . Reception is filled with areas to play LEGO and we found the rooms and overall hotel really clean and well maintained . It’s also across the road from the LEGOLAND park so the closest you can get.

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, corridor inside l LEGOLAND Castle Hotel

If you want a more cost-effective option , during my research for the best accommodation in Billund, I found the cabins at LEGO Holiday Village are the cheapest LEGO-themed accommodation options on offer. These are a bit further from the park entrance (but only by a few minutes) and look smaller inside but they offer a nice indoor-outdoor living option!

LEGOLAND Billund Tickets

LEGOLAND ®  Billund  Resort offers a range of tickets and passes. As a visitor from overseas, you’re likely to just need the 1-day pass or 2-day pass .

Do you need 2 days at LEGOLAND Billund theme park?

To be honest, I don’t think you need 2 days in the theme park . We initially looked at this option but our flights didn’t allow us to spend 2 days there and I’m actually glad because our 1-day ticket was enough!

If you have 2 days in Billund , you should spend one whole day at LEGOLAND theme park and the other day at LEGO House and some of the other things to do around Billund.

Buy your LEGOLAND Billund tickets here:

Is it worth getting fast-track tickets for LEGOLAND Billund?

LEGOLAND offer 3 different fast-track options called Reserve & Ride .

Of course, each day is going to be different but we went to LEGOLAND Billund on a Saturday in August which I presume is Peak Season and we didn’t need fast-track tickets.

We debated getting fast-track tickets but the cost of them is quite high and there were 5 of us so it was pricey.

I’m so glad we didn’t because we were one of the first groups into the park at 10:00 so we headed to the back of the park and had no queues for rides for the first hour.

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, inside LEGOLAND park

We left the park and went to LEGO House at lunchtime, upon arriving back it was much busier with 15-25 minute queue waits but because we did a good chunk of rides in the morning, we didn’t mind.

If you are visiting LEGOLAND in the afternoon and will be very short on time, fast-track tickets will be worth it in high season.

Can you leave LEGOLAND Billund and return?

Yes! You can leave the park and reenter on the same day. You just need to get a stamp on your hand from a staff member at the gate before exiting.

LEGOLAND Billund Rides

The great thing about LEGOLAND Billund is the variety of rides on offer for all ages . My stepsons are 7, 10 and 16 so we spent our time on the bigger rides but we did walk through the DUPLO LAND which is great for younger children.

If you want to know more about what LEGOLAND Billund for toddlers is like, have a read of this post .

Some areas are LEGO themed like LEGO NINJAGO WORLD and LEGO MOVIE WORLD and perfect for LEGO lovers, however, the other areas like Polar Land, Adventure Land and Pirate Land are pretty generic so even if you aren’t into LEGO that much, or your kids aren’t, they will still enjoy the rides and the decoration.

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Ninjago Area inside LEGOLAND park

What are the best rides at LEGOLAND Billund?

  • Polar Express
  • X-treme Racers
  • Ice Pilots School
  • Pirate Splash Battle
  • LEGO Ninjago Ride
  • Pirate Carousel
  • Fire Brigade
  • The Haunted House
  • Flying Eagle

There are no huge roller coasters . The biggest is the Polar Express which has a lot of turns, drops and is pretty fast but my youngest stepson at 7 years old just reached the height limit and went on it fine so it’s not too scary (although I realised at that age, they have no fear anyway!).

The next biggest roller coaster is X-treme Racers , this has a steep drop at the beginning and feels really unique because you’re in a small cart of just 4 people rather than a long train like roller coasters usually have!

Flying Eagle is the next biggest after that if you’re looking for the best roller coasters at LEGOLAND Billund!

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Pirate Splash Battle inside LEGOLAND park

Talking of unique rides at LEGOLAND Billund , Ice Pilot’s School is really cool! You design your own ride before you get on by choosing a choice of turns and moves on a screen using a key card.

Aside from adrenaline rides, we really loved the competition of rides such as The Temple, Pirate Splash Battle and LEGO Ninjago Ride .

Make sure you also go to The Haunted House because the maze mirror in there is soo crazy and good!

How wet do the water rides at LEGOLAND Billund get you?

We went on nearly all of the water rides and we didn’t get AS wet as expected. Of course, it always depends on where you sit. When you sit at the front of the Canoe you are likely to get pretty wet.

Pirate Splash Battle can get pretty wet, it just depends if the other boats are full and how many people are trying to squirt water at you.

It rained when we entered the park so we were big tourists and bought Ponchos because I didn’t bring any waterproof jackets so we put these on for the water rides which helped but as it was a sunny day, we would have dried off okay.

Plus, they do have driers you can stand in!

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Ellie in poncho on canoe water ride

TIP – The greatest tip for LEGOLAND I read was that the rides close an hour before the official park closing time . You still have the last hour to walk around and MINILAND is a great place to spend this time because it’s still open. If your priority is all the rides like it was for us. Do all of these first and then end at MINILAND, don’t waste time there earlier in the day.

Things to do in Billund

Aside from LEGOLAND, what is there to do in Billund Denmark?

Well, if you’re not going for LEGO, there isn’t a huge amount to visit but there are still quite a few attractions in Billund and attractions near Billund.

1. LEGOLAND Theme Park

2. lego house.

LEGO House is a creative and immersive LEGO experience with 25 million pieces of LEGO inside ! Aside from LEGOLAND, it is the top tourist attraction in Billund.

It is known as Home of the Brick due to LEGO originating in Billund and is great for adults and children who love LEGO.

You need to buy a separate ticket and it’s around the same price as the LEGOLAND theme park entry ticket so make sure you give yourself enough time here to get your money’s worth.

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Dinosaurs at LEGO House

You can enter LEGO House for free , but you can only access the ground floor which has 1 small area to play but nothing else.

You can also play outside the building at any time of the day . There are 2 sets of steps which we saw people having a picnic and playing on. There are also big pieces of LEGO you can climb on!

There are many different areas within the building with different LEGO pieces giving different creative ideas . There are also many areas for young children to play with DUPLO in a safe environment.

The staff are really great too I found, they are very interactive giving ideas and advice to people.

LEGO House has a cafe and restaurant on the ground as well as a shop (that we spent wayyyy too long in!). You can also exit and re-enter within the same day so you really can spend a full day here.

As I said, with LEGO-loving boys, I’d definitely consider a trip back to Billund just to visit LEGO House and spend the full day there!

3. Lalandia

Lalandia can be seen from LEGOLAND. It’s a Danish holiday centre with 3 different locations in Denmark.

In Billund, with accommodation onsite but also lots of activities like an Aquadome, paddle courts, crazy golf, climbing courses and restaurants.

If you’re looking for things to do in Billund with kids, visiting here will give you a few more activity options and is easy to walk to from LEGOLAND and the nearby accommodation.

4. Teddy Bear Art Museum

Located next to LEGO House is the Teddy Bear Art Museum, another one of the things to do in Billund.

It’s home to 1200 teddy bears dating back to 1906 and is a place of art as well as play.

It’s one of the cheaper things to do in Billund and children aged 0-11 enter for free.

5. Skulpturpark Billund

We came across Billund Skulpturpark whilst walking to dinner from LEGO Castle Hotel. It’s only a small park but has a few things for children to sit and play on .

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Skulpturpark Billund

What’s really cool though is it’s next to THE LEGO GROUP corporate offices. They have a giant LEGO man outside the office entrance and the building is made from LEGO-looking bricks!

They have a sign which says ‘play on the grass’. To us, this summed up what Billund is all about

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, outside the LEGO Group offices

6. WOW PARK Billund

Located on the outskirts of Billund is WOW PARK Billund . It’s an amusement park for the whole family where you can challenge yourself on everything from giant Tarzan swings , and high-hanging suspension bridges to wild slides and underground caves!

We didn’t go but here’s a great post from a family who have been!

The Guardian called it ‘Go Ape goes Viking!’

Things to do near Billund

For more things to do in Billund, there are many attractions near Billund that are worth visiting and will enhance your trip, especially seeing and learning more about the history of Denmark.

These attractions are not in Billund, they are things to do near Billund, so you will need to hire a car or work out public transport to get to them:

  • The Living Museum Karensminde
  • Kongernes Jelling – Home of the Vikings
  • Vorbasse Market – Biggest Market in Denmark
  • Givskud Zoo
  • Hiking in Syvårssøer

Here are more attractions near Billund:

If you like visiting Castles, here are great Castles in Denmark worth visiting!

Where to eat in Billund

Finally, after all this activity, where can you eat in Billund?

LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL where we stayed has a restaurant onsite called the Knights Tavern . They offer a 2-hour buffet, all-you-can-eat window every day. I believe this concept is common in other LEGO-themed hotels here and in other countries.

The only thing is that it’s expensive . A buffet in the Knights Tavern is 449 DKK / £50.00 pp and from 199 DKK / £25.00 per child.

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Knights Tavern Restaurant at LEGOHOUSE Castle Hotel

The best place to go for restaurants in Billund is the town centre where LEGO House is located. Here, there are a number of places to eat in Billund.

We went to Billund Pizza Steakhouse . They were really busy on a Saturday night for people eating in and ordering take-out. We found the food to be good so I could see why they were busy.

how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, outside Billund Pizza Steakhouse Restaurant

If you’re looking for halal food in Billund , Billund Pizza Steakhouse offers many halal meat options but check with the server first as not everything is halal.

I hope this guide to LEGOLAND Billund and how to visit LEGOLAND Billund has been helpful and you are now ready to book!

Legoland in Billund, Denmark: The Original Legoland

The original Legoland (which opened in 1968) is located on the western half of Denmark, called Jutland . Legoland Denmark is centrally located if you're driving. It's 150 miles west of Copenhagen. If you want to fly in, the airport of Billund is literally next door to the park. Legoland's opening times become longer as it gets warmer; the park itself is open from late March through early October.

Attention to Detail

Everything in Legoland consists of countless Lego blocks built with creativity and craftsmanship alike. You'll walk past entire countries built on small scale, entirely out of Lego pieces! You're allowed to bring your own food into the park but there are countless (slightly pricy) food stands and cafes.

Exciting Rides

In the past few years, Legoland has been adding family rides as well as more thrill rides for the adventurous. There are pirate-themed boat rides, a gentle mining-themed rollercoaster, flying carpet rides, and lots more fitting for all ages from toddler to seniors. And while you're there, have your kids get a "real" Legoland driver’s license at the Lego driving school!

During Bad Weather

Considering Denmark's unpredictable weather there are a number of indoor activities, like the adorable-but-authentic toy museum with interactive mechanical toys. Or, head to the Lego playroom and build your own ideas in Lego pieces to win daily prizes.

Parents are often stressed looking after their children at theme parks. Not here. Simply rent a "KidSpotter"! A new Wi-Fi tracking network and instant messaging ensures you won't lose your kids. If they're out of sight, just send them an SMS message and their location will be displayed on the parental unit. What an idea!

Special Services

Legoland offers special services such as a Babycare Center, a bank with ATMs, and Drying Machines for wet clothing. Dogs are allowed on leashes. They also have a First Aid station, handicap facilities, an Information Center, luggage lockers, and wheelchairs.

LEGO Star Wars Legoland Billund Denmark

Everything You Need to Know about Legoland (Billund, DK)

Living in Denmark with two small children would, of course, lead us to visiting LEGOLAND Billund! Heck, I think I would visit this place without kids! 🙂 We talked about visiting Legoland for a long time with my two kids, since they are obsessed with the tiny building blocks. Luckily, we were given season passes one year, so we made it a necessity to visit as often as we could. It is from all of these visits (and many more) that I was able to create this awesome Legoland Denmark Itinerary!!

Tips for Before you Visit Legoland Denmark

Finding discounts before you go.

If you look on cereal boxes, Lego toy catalogs or even certain egg cartons, you will find coupons that get a child in free with a paid adult. It pays to do a bit of research ahead of time. There are other places where you can find discounts, so if you live in Denmark or know someone who does, see if you can get a coupon. Coupons are good!

Insider Tips for Enjoying Your Time at Legoland

You may also want to get a map before you get there to plan your attack. We now have the park memorized, which is helpful.

When you walk in, there are a bunch of stores right away. It would be good to talk with your kids about gifts. It saves a lot of hassle. We reason with our kids and say that there is no way we are going to buy something and have to carry it the entire day. It makes sense to them, especially if you tell them that they will be the ones carrying it. Works like a charm!

Along with a map, there may be some type of paper they give you when you buy tickets. It will have the kids look for clues throughout the park. When you have found them all, you can turn the card in for a prize at the large store by the entrance. It isn’t worth going crazy over, since it tends to be a cardboard hat or something, but it could get you out of buying something for your kids. Just an idea. T

his also is normally during summer hours, so if you are there in the spring or fall, this might not be something that is happening. It could also be something fun to do as an extra activity while you are in the park

When to Get There and Where to Park at Legoland

When traveling to Legoland, it is good to get there about 20 minutes or so before they open, so you can get a parking spot across the street. There is another, larger parking lot, which is great for campers and caravans just to the east. Both are quite near the entrance, and you must pay to park there. If you are going to be traveling to Legoland often, it is a good idea to buy a Season “parking” pass. Ask at information for more details.

denmark legoland trip

Being Careful at the Entrance

When you get to the entrance of Legoland, Billund, you will probably want to take some photos but be careful, since the best place to take the pictures might be very close to an actual road. Don’t get hit by a bus! That is an order! It is also nice that there are bathrooms you can access from outside the gates. This is helpful if you have traveled a long way to get there and can’t wait until the gates open.

Exploring the Many Areas within Legoland Denmark

I really love how there are many different “lands” within Legoland. It gives families many different experiences in one place. I also like the different options for food and dining that often match whatever land you are in.

Lego Friends

After the stores, you will find some great Lego displays. There is the Lego Friends ready for a photo op. Though this isn’t a large area, LEGO Friends is a very important category of LEGO bricks. I know that I quite like them. This part of the park has changed over the years, but you can almost always find your favorite LEGO Friends characters. There is also a LEGO Friends town with all of your favorite places from the shows and building sets.

denmark legoland trip

Miniland at Legoland in Billund, Denmark

This is probably one of the most impressive displays of LEGO sets that I have seen. You can see famous streets in Copenhagen, castles from Germany, and so much more. It is like taking a trip around the world when you walk through the Miniland at Legoland Billund. You can also find an airport, harbor, and railroad with moving vehicles.

Though this area is a great place to spend some time, I would try to avoid it at first. As I said, have a plan! There may be very long wait times for different rides, so you might want to go to those first and leave this area for the end!

LEGO Ninjago World

My boys love Ninjago, so we always start in the Ninjago area first. This just so happens to be in the back of the park on the same side as the entrance, so it isn’t a complete haul. At the entrance to Ninjago World, there is a large pagoda that looks like it is from some Asian country. That is the cool thing about the park; it is separated by the different Lego themes. Here, you can train to be a ninja with a few different tasks, and you can also see life-size versions of the Ninjago characters. Some are made out of LEGO and others are walking around the Ninjago World.

denmark legoland trip

Ninjago, the Ride

We head straight for “Ninjago, the ride” before we begin our training. This is one of those 3D rides where you sit in a car that never leaves the ground. You get to sit with three others, which is perfect or our family of four. With your 3D glasses, you can watch how your quick hand movements help you fight the bad guys. There is a sensor on the car which adds up your points, so you can see who won from your group. This is always good family fun.

Are you interested in other indoor attractions in Billund? Check out the LEGO House !

When my son was 4, he even loved this ride, but when we went on this ride with some good friends their 4-year-old daughter was a bit afraid. Just something to consider ahead of time.

Ninja Training Courses

If your child isn’t into 3D rides, you can also do the training courses. One is called Lloyd’s Laser Maze, which is where you have to walk across a room of lasers as fast as you can without touching the lasers. This is located to the left of the entrance to “Ninjago, the ride”.

denmark legoland trip

There is also Cole’s Climbing wall which is just outside as you enter the Ninjago World. Jay’s Reaction Game is also something that is outside of the main ride. Though the laser maze may have a longer line, the climbing wall and reaction game don’t have lines at all.

denmark legoland trip

On the way to the Ninjago World, we pass Duploland. The Duplo area is a great place for babies and smaller children. My boys were 4 and 7 on our first, family trip to Legoland, and they enjoyed this area. If you are afraid to take your small child to an amusement park, don’t fret with Legoland. They’ve got you covered! Toddlers will love Legoland, Billund because of Duploland. My kids still enjoy the little Ferris wheel and airplanes, which are a few of the rides you will find in Duploland. Children can also ride a small train here.

denmark legoland trip

My boys also LOVE the giant Lego playhouses they can go in. This is just a playground that is made out of giant Legos. It could be a nice place to visit if the park is super crowded. There are no lines in the playground, which could give the kiddos a time for some much needed play.

denmark legoland trip

Imagination Zone

The Imagination Zone at Legoland is in the far top-left corner of the map. Here, you will find many great snack shops that have candy and flavored, icy drinks, as well as a great restaurant called the Burger Kitchen. They have a veggie burger I would highly recommend. Also, there are plenty of picnic tables if you want a place to eat food you have brought from home. You can also spend time seeing some of the fun areas in the Imagination Zone.

Finding the Galaxy Far, Far Away

One area is the Star Wars section just outside Duploland. You can find all your favorite scenes and characters made out of Lego from episodes 4-6. There is also a large fighter ship in the very back of the park next to Ninjago World. You can push a button and hear it “take off”. This large ship is next to the theater and can be a cool place to check our before or after a movie!

denmark legoland trip

If you are a Star Wars fan, you won’t want to miss this very cool section that has scenes and vehicles that were mostly from movies 4, 5 and 6. Being a child of the 1980s, I sometimes think that is section is more for moms and dads, who remember the thrill of Star Wars when it was new! My kids also really enjoy it, so it is a win-win!

LEGO Studios 4D Cinema

LEGO Studios 4D Cinema is a fun theater, where you can watch a movie in 4D on the topics of Nexo Knights, Ninjago, the Lego Movie and more.  The theme of the movie may change from time to time. 4D is a step up from 3D, where you just wear special glasses. With 4D, you can actually smell what you are experiencing in the movie. You may also feel things like rain, snow or wind. It is a cool experience.

Insider tip: If you show up on time for the movie, you won’t be let in, so be sure to arrive at least 5 minutes early. They have different times throughout the day when the movies are in Danish, English and German. All take no more than 15 minutes and are well worth a try! You kids can play with the musical fountain while you wait in line for the movie. This fountain sprays water, but your child has the ability to change the sounds that water makes with different buttons set into the ground.

Atlantis by SEA LIFE at Legoland

One area that might get missed when you are out at Legoland is Atlantis by SEA LIFE. This is a cool place to see if you like sea creatures and the water. Atlantis is Legoland’s own aquarium with not only many different sea creatures, but there area also some cool LEGO characters and objects in the waters. At the end of this indoor section, you can also get up close and personal with some of the sea animals. Our niece really loved this part too!

denmark legoland trip

Legoredo Town (Cowboy Town)

After Ninjago World, we normally go to the neighboring Legoredo Town, which is what we call “cowboy town”. Here, it feels like home! Hahah! I am a Yankee, through and through, but this is the “American west”, which is the only America I can get at Legoland. I’ll take it.

We LOVE the toy store in this section, because you can bring in any Lego figure you have bought in one of those mystery bags and exchange it for a different one. This place came in handy when we somehow managed to buy 2 pink Batmans. There is nothing wrong with pink Batmans, but we only need one. One is enough, so we traded the other one.

Indian Camp and Mining for Gold at Legoland

You can also visit the Indian Camp, where you can roast twisted dough on a stick called snobrød. It’s a Danish tradition for children, and it is a very unique experience for children who are not from Denmark. Why they have it in the “American section” is beyond me, but it allows the kids to cook over a fire. You have to pay for it, of course, but it isn’t much. You can also pan for gold at the LEGOLDMINE. This is another place that costs money, just so you know.

denmark legoland trip

Rides at Legoredo Town at Legoland Billund

The LEGO Canoe ride is a water ride, which most amusement parks have. However, we love that during the calm part of this ride that you get to see many LEGO animals that are native to the USA.

denmark legoland trip

There is also the Western Ride, which is a merry-go-round, that is located in the center of Legoredo Town.  When my kids were smaller, they liked to ride on the merry-go-round, and I still love that it plays American, country music!

denmark legoland trip

Another fun ride in Legoredo Town is the Flying Eagle. This is a mini roller coaster by many standers, but it is one of the bigger ones by Legoland standers. It doesn’t take long to ride it, so they have it go around twice to make it worth the wait. We had a lot of fun on it.

denmark legoland trip

What (else) Makes Legoredo Town a Unique Experience at Legoland Billund

Legoredo Town has some pretty amazing restaurants as well. You can spend a lot of money if you eat at one of the buffets with steaks, though. However, I like the Mexican place that has vegetarian wraps, but it is a shame that this restaurant isn’t open all days throughout the season. You can also find a place to buy hot dogs and one to get coffee and desserts. If you bring your own food, you will find plenty of tables to eat your food as well. There is an ATM in this area if you are in need of one, but all areas in Legoland take credit cards.

As you are walking out of this area, you can find some really neat LEGO sculptures that are important to the American wild west. One of them is a mini Mount Rushmore, and another is a mountain carving of the Native American chief Sitting Bull. Other LEGO people that you’ll find throughout Legoredo are equally fun. Look for the naked man on the roof or the very busty lady sitting on a bench near the hotdog building.

denmark legoland trip

Ghost: The Haunted House and Ride

Though technically a part of Legoredo Tow, “Ghost: the Haunted House” is attraction all on its own, in my opinion. At the fork in the road leading to cowboy town, pirate land and the Miniland, you will find a rather large, green mansion. This is a haunted house with a large drop ride inside the building. No one in my family has the stomach for that, so we just go through the house. It is actually really cool inside.

denmark legoland trip

Your little one has to be a certain height to enter, which doesn’t include the ride. You get to find ghosts and witches and skeletons. It is super cool, since all of these characters are just large LEGO figures. Not to scary, if you ask me.

Are you interested to see Legoland at Halloween ? Check out this POST to get all the details from an insider!

I was really curious about it once, and since the lines for it are always so long, I had never gone in. We were there one day when there wasn’t a line, so we tried it out. The house is so worth the visit. There is so much to see that would entertain the entire family, just not those timid little ones who don’t like ghosts and stuff. Just be aware that there are stairs involved, so leave the strollers outside.

Pirate Land at Legoland Billund in Denmark

Pirate Land is the next place on the path. I have mixed feelings about Pirate Land. On one hand, it is a lot of fun when it is warm out, because there are a lot of rides that have to do with water. On the other hand, this section often seems to be closed when we visit in the spring and fall. That could be a bummer if you have traveled a long way to get here for the pirate stuff, and then you discover the pirate area isn’t completely open.

We have been lucky enough to visit on some occasions when all the rides were open. The Pirate Splash Battle is fun, because you get to ride a pirate ship and shoot water cannons at the pirates in the other boats.

denmark legoland trip

You can also ride a larger pirate ship that swings back and forth called the Pirate Wave Breaker.

denmark legoland trip

They also have small, spinning boats like the tea cup ride at Disneyland. This is called the Pirate Carousel.

denmark legoland trip

Something for every Pirate in the Family

A family favorite is simply called “Pirate Boat”. This is one of those rides that babies can go on, because it just requires people to sit in a boat and look at the scenery. Here you float to a pirate hideout. Everything is made out of Lego, which is really neat. There was a ride like this in Kings Island in Cincinnati when I was a kid, but it was with the Smurfs. I was never a roller coaster kind of girl, so that was my ultimate fav. Pirate Boats definitely brings back good memories!

Another section of Pirate Land that is great for those who aren’t so interested in roller coasters is the Lighthouse. This is a tall tower with chairs on the sides. If you feel that you want to test your strength, sit on one of the chairs and try to pull yourself up the lighthouse. It is a fun competition that you can do with others in your family that is great for even smaller children.

Insider Tips for Getting the Most out of Pirate Land

Sometimes, we also eat at the Captain Roger’s restaurant here. If you have season passes, you get discounts on food at some places. At that time, you could get a kid’s meal for free if you bought an adult meal. Since I’m a vegetarian, I need to scope out the places for my people. They have a falafel meal here, and fish is always a big hit with my family. The kid’s meal has more food than what you would find in traditional kid’s meals.

Just a tip! One thing also to keep in mind is that this restaurant tends to be closed often at Legoland, Billund in the spring and fall months when the water ride isn’t open. If you have your heart set on getting fish, visit the park in the summer. This area also has options for face painting, gifts, coffee and desserts, candy, hot dogs and many carnival-style games where you can win the giant donut pillow you’ve always wanted!

The LEGO MOVIE World

The newest addition to the Legoland Amusement Park in Billund, Denmark is the LEGO MOVIE World. Since we have been to Legoland many times, we decided to start our last trip with the LEGO MOVIE World first. Since it is new, we thought that the lines would be pretty long with excited people wanting to try it out for the first time. We were right, since there were many lines forming at the time we left. We were glad to be one of the first ones in this section when the park opened!

The LEGO MOVIE World is like no other area in the park. When you step through the entrance, it feels as if you have stepped onto the LEGO MOVIE set. You might have to check a mirror to see if you have been turned into a Lego figure, because it feels so real.

denmark legoland trip

What to expect at the LEGO MOVIE World section of Legoland

The coolest part about the LEGO MOVIE World is Emmet’s Flying Adventure. This ride is inside a building, since it involves a 3D screen. You sit on one of Emmet’s bunk bed couches and travel through the different lands within the LEGO MOVIE. You really feel like you are flying high above pirate ships, avoiding DUPLO monsters and soaring beside the stars in outer space. It is really a unique experience at Legoland Billund!

If you kids enjoyed the Frog Hopper in the Miniland, they will love the Unikitty’s Disco Drop ride.

However, if you have some thrill seekers in your group, they might like to try the Apocalypseburg Sky Battle, which is a spinning ride that takes you up and down in miniature airplanes.

This section really had something for all types of visitors, and I especially loved that there was Benny’s Playship, a spaceship playground for kids who just wanted to play. This is great for smaller kids up to bigger kids like my 11 year old. For me, the experience of walking down a LEGO city was cool enough!

Polar Land and Theme Stage

The last area in Legoland that is the farthest from the entrance is Polar Land. This place has a little bit of everything. They have real penguins at Penguin Bay that will entertain the little ones, a large roller coaster, and a ice pilot training school.

Proper Roller Coasters and Other Experiences at Legoland Billund

The Ice Pilots School, is a personal favorite of my older son. My younger son is too small for it, so big brother goes with dad. The ride is really a mechanical arm with a 2-seated chair. First, you get to program the ride to do where they want: up, down, spin, etc. and store the info on a card. You, then, take the card to the station and insert it by the machine. The computer will read the card and do what you programmed. It is kind of neat.

denmark legoland trip

The roller coaster is called Polar X-plorer and is as proper a roller coaster as you can get in Legoland. This one has one of the the larger size requirements, goes quite fast and high, and has a drop. It is a lot of fun for an adult or bigger kid who loves the thrill of the ride!

There is a Pizza and Pasta Buffet here as well, but there are tons of places to eat a picnic lunch if you have one with you. Behind the Pizza and Pasta restaurant is the stage area. This is where special guests will perform all throughout the weekends in September and where they have special shows from the beginning of May to the middle of August.

Shopping at Legoland Billund

As I mentioned, we wait until the end of our trip to visit the stores. I just makes more sense than to buy something at the start of our day and have to carry it around. If you are near the entrance to Hotel Legoland and the Atlantis by SEA LIFE, you can find a discounted store. This has a variety of items for a cheaper price. It may be backpacks, clothes, swords, etc. You never know what you’ll find there.

The main LEGO Store is at the entrance to the park. Here, you can find nearly any LEGO set that you can think of. They have all the themes that are popular , and there are even some that you may never have heard of. You can also get extra things like keychains, lunchboxes, etc. There is a place for the kids to play just outside the store if you want to shop alone. I’m always happy that my kids are satisfied with getting a new catalog. Since we have season passes, we go often, which would make stopping at the store each time a rather expensive summer!

denmark legoland trip

There is also a store that sells regular clothes called Kids Wear / Family Fashion. Stepping in this store feels more like being in a mall than at a Legoland amusement park. You can also find smaller shops in other areas of the park, like the one I mentioned at Legoredo Town. There is also one at the Knight’s Kingdom that sells LEGO sets and accessories for this theme. They have a similar shop at Ninjago World for Ninjago LEGO sets, as well.

Tips for Visiting Legoland Billund in Denmark

Smoking Areas at Legoland Billund : If you are a smoker, there are designated areas within the park where you can go to smoke. They are labeled on the map.

Entertaining the Kids While Waiting in Line : I have to say, Legoland makes waiting in line for rides an easy thing for kids. In all the long line areas, you will find a big box of LEGO bricks. The kids can play in this section while the adults wait in line. It is easy for parents to see their child at all points of the line, as well. When the parents move on to the end of the line, the kids can just join them.

Not having to deal with bored and whiny kids while waiting in line is a great thing. Legoland scores big points with this mom. I actually get to visit with my husband in line and not have to worry about the kids.

denmark legoland trip

Reserve and Ride : If you want to avoid the lines all together, you can purchase a Reserve and Ride pass just inside the entrance to the park. This will allow you to move to a shorter line only for those with this special pass.

LEGOLAND Photo : On many of the rides, you get your picture taken. You can purchase these pictures at the end of the ride or at the Legoland Photo booth that is located close to the main store. There is also an area where there are scheduled photo opportunities with different LEGO figures.

denmark legoland trip

Bathrooms at Legoland : There are bathrooms in every section of Legoland, so you never have to go far to use the facilities or to change a diaper. Changing stations are also all over the park. Each bathroom is also wheelchair assessible.

Legoland Billund Season Pass : If you plan to visit Legoland multiple times, it is worth getting the Legoland Season Pass. Not only will it make your trip cheaper each time you use it, but there are also many perks to being a season pass holder. As I mentioned before, you can get discounts on some food and drinks, which can really help the budget. There are also some times when the park is open just for season pass holders. Learn more about getting a Legoland Season Pass HERE !

Overall Thoughts about Legoland (Denmark)

This is a great place for a family. There are other amusement parks in Denmark that might be better for the bigger kids or those roller-coaster-crazed individuals, but we really like that Legoland has so much to offer the entire family. We like that there are many different food options for vegetarians, and the discounts with the season passes make it worth getting them. The different, themed areas are so much fun, and the entire park is clean diverse in its experiences. We would highly recommend a trip here for people of any age, especially those traveling to Billund with kids.

Hi Kelly, We plan a visit to Billund only one day (road trip with limited time, we must make choice) and because we’ve already visited Legoland California in 2017 we chose to visit Lego House. But on my French Lonely planet Guide, it is written that Legoland Entrance is free 30 minutes before the attractions close and because the park remains open one more hour after stopping the attractions, that means that we could have 1hour30 of free visit in the park (to see miniland for example). Can you confirm that ? Is it truth ? And can you tell how long people stay at Lego House ? Is it doable to visit Lego House during the day and finish at Legoland for the last hour and a half ? Thank you for your article. Sophie, a French expat living in the Netherlands

You will love the Lego House. Did you check out my blog post for that? We spent almost the entire day there, but you can spend as much time as you want. I don’t know about the free entrance 30 minutes before, but if that is true, that should give you enough time to check out the Miniland. There won’t be anything else to do once the park closes, except maybe eat. Some of the restaurants might be open later. The distance from Lego House to Legoland is quite close since the entire town is small (only about 8000 citizens). If your children have one area they would like to try that you haven’t really seen before in California, you might want to consider planning that to be the first thing you do and leaving the Miniland for the very end! It might also be a good idea to call the park and talk to someone on the phone to know exactly what options you have for the end of the day. I hope this has helped some! 🙂 Have a great time!

Marte Otten

Hi Kelly, you say you get a discount on food with your passes. Is there any other way to find coupons/ discounts for food in the park?

I don’t know of any of the top of my head, but we’ll be going there very soon. I’ll ask around and post of here if I find any! 🙂 Thanks for reading!

4. Plan which day you will visit

Getting wristbands

Saturdays are a good day to visit. This is often the day that families change over in the accommodation, either leave or arrive and so the park isn’t at it’s busiest. The busiest days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

5. Wrist bands

When you arrive take one of the free wrist bands for kids. You can add your phone number in case they wander off.

6. Use the picnic areas

Food isn’t cheap at LEGOLAND Billund so consider taking a picnic. You can make use of the many picnic areas dotted around the park.

7. Measure up – on of our Top Tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark

Measuring your child

Measure your child’s height in advance so you can check which rides they are allowed on and plan your day.

8. Find the cinema times early

If you want to see one of the 3D or 4D films and would like it to be in English make sure you check out the times early on to plan around it. Some shows are in Danish and others in English.

9. Take a pushchair

Pushchairs to hire

If your child is young then consider take a pushchair with you. It’s a whole day walking around which can really take its toll.

There is somewhere to hire them if you forget or are travelling without one.

10. Make use of the last 30 minutes

The last 30 minutes can be a great time to hit those big rides that normally have long queues. These often empty out towards the end of the day so this can be a really good time to take advantage of it.

11. Watch the closing times – Tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund

Watch out for the closing times of rides. Even though the park may close at one time, say 5.30, the rides will finish earlier, for example at 5pm. So if you’re saving one last ride make sure you get there in time.

12. Beware of getting a soaking!

20 Top Tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark

There aren’t many places to get really wet at LEGOLAND Billund but there are a few rides where you can have a fun soaking.

If you want to do this then plan it for the end of the day if there’s still a chill in the air as you can end up feeling so wet and cold if you do it at the start. Or plan ahead with a towel or change of clothes.

13. Top Tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark – get a map

Make sure you pick up at a park map at the entrance to LEGOLAND Billund so you can plan your day. Or quickly find your way around.

14. Organise your souvenir shopping

souvenir from Legoland Billund Denmark

If your kids want to buy souvenirs and you have a few days at the park then do your research.

We found items such as MiniFigures to be cheaper to buy at the LEGO House shop which you don’t need a ticket to get in to.

15. Don’t be too ambitious

Don’t think you can do everything in one day. It really is impossible. And even though LEGOLAND in Denmark isn’t the largest of the parks it’s still too big to do it all.

Be realistic about what you want to achieve. Pick out the rides that are most important to you and try to enjoy the other bits of Legoland along the way such as the brilliant Miniland.

16. Stay nearby – Tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund

Visiting the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel in Billund, Denmark

Consider staying on site if your budget allows. Either at the original LEGOLAND Hotel or the amazing LEGOLAND Castle Hotel as both will often give you tickets to the park as part of your stay, parking and also a chance to get in to the park an hour before the general public.

It also gives you somewhere to retreat to have lunch and just rest weary legs for a while.

17. Organise your car parking

If you’re parking at the main carpark pay for your parking when you arrive. This avoids the long queues to pay at the end and that way you can exit quickly before some of the crowds.

18. Start backwards – Tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund

Start at the back of the park as most people enter the park and start going on rides as soon as they see them.

Head for Ninjago land or some of the big rollercoasters if that’s what you’re in to and work your way forwards to avoid some of the crowds.

19. Reserve the car driving slot

If your children would be interested in the car driving and getting the licence then make sure you get there early to get a reservation. As these sell out.

Reserve your time slot for later in the day and return when it’s time.

20. Plan around Danish holidays – Top Tips for visiting LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark

If you’re visiting LEGOLAND Billund in the summer then go as late in the season as you can. Danish children usually go back to school towards the end of August so it will be much quieter but usually still with beautiful weather.

Top tips for a family trip to the original Legoland in Billund, Denmark

Top tips for a family trip to the original Legoland in Billund, Denmark

All you need to know when visiting the home of LEGO in Billund, Denmark

Billund in Denmark is the home of Lego.

It is where the very first Lego toy brick was made in 1932. And where the first Legoland Park opened on June 7, 1968, next to the original Lego factory.

Legoland Billund is smaller, flatter and easier to get around than Legoland Windsor. Plus it’s just a 90-minute flight from the UK so makes a great alternative for Lego fans.

If you are planning a visit to Legoland Billund , make sure you read our 14 top tips below first and then our review .

1. How to get to Legoland Billund in Denmark

Legoland Billund is across the road from Billund Airport. You can fly there from Manchester, Heathrow and Stansted Airports. Ryanair fly from Stansted and Sun-Air, a British Airways partner, goes from Heathrow and Manchester.

We flew direct from Manchester with Sun-Air (which works in partnership with BA) on a tiny plane. The flight took 90 minutes.

2. Where to stay

It is expensive but you can stay stay at the park – at Legoland Hotel or Legoland Castle Hotel, a stay which can include park tickets, parking and early park access.

There is also Legoland Holiday Village, 450 metres from the entrance to Legoland.

But we stayed over the road at Lalandia Billund – an amazing water park resort, so got the best of both worlds. We stayed in a fantastic two-bedroomed lodge.

Lalandia

3. Best time to go to Legoland Billund

The busiest days at Legoland Billund are Tuesdays and Wednesdays while Saturdays are the quietest.

If you want to go over the summer, go as late as you can as Danish children usually go back to school towards the end of August so it will be quieter.

We found queues manageable despite visiting during the Easter holidays – there are lots of rides and plenty of space.

4. How to avoid the queues

Most people enter the park and start going on rides as soon as they see them so head straight to the back to avoid the crowds.

The longest queues when we went were in the Ninjago area which did mean a wait for Lloyd’s Laser Maze and the Ninjago Ride.

The Ninjago Ride

The Ninjago Ride

If you have Ninjago fans you could head there as soon as the gates open. Alternatively, the most popular rides are often quieter in the last 30 minutes before the park closes, although you may miss out altogether if you leave it too late.

To really save time queuing, splash out on the Q-Bot Reserve and Ride system. Instead of waiting in a queue at each attraction, you spend the waiting time elsewhere in the park. An Express pass reduces your waiting time by 50 per cent and an Ultimate pass means almost no waits in queues on your chosen rides, which can be a game changer when you have young children.

Legoland Billund is divided into themed areas.

The Miniland area is at its heart with recreations of everything from old Amsterdam to Star Wars, made out of Lego, which everyone will enjoy.

This park uses 65 million of the little bricks to build its displays.

There is a Duplo Land, Imagination Zone, Pirate Land, Knights’ Kingdom, Polar Land and Legoredo Town.

Duplo Land at Lego Billund

Lego Ninjago World and Adventure Land are really popular.

Our favourite ride was the competitive Falck Fire Engine in Adventure Land. You work with your family to use a pump to move a fire engine and then spray out ‘fires’ while racing against other visitors on their fire engines.

Falck Fire Engine ride

Falck Fire Engine ride

The farthest end of the park is the quietest and we found a nice picnic spot by the penguin enclosure where we could watch them swimming while we ate.

6. Age appropriate

Unlike some theme parks, there is lots for little ones including Duplo Land for toddlers and Imagination Zone.

There are also enough rollercoasters to keep teenagers happy – so this suits all ages from two to 16.

A rollercoaster at Legoland Billund

There’s plenty for older children

Don’t forget to be aware of height and age restrictions, so children aren’t left disappointed on the day.

7. Food and drink

There are food and drink outfits but the options can be pricey. Plus they get very busy after 12.30pm so take your own food and drinks where possible, to enjoy in one of the picnic areas.

8. Language

This is obviously a Danish theme park but some of the 4D films are in English – check the times for these in advance.

9. Pushchairs

It’s a nice flat theme park and not overly huge but if little one’s legs get tired, there are pushchairs to hire.

10. Aquarium

If the weather is bad or you want a break from the rides then there is a good aquarium in the Imagination Zone called Atlantis by Sea Life.

Atlantis by Sea Life in Legoland Billund

Atlantis by Sea Life

It takes you on an expedition under the sea with a few bricks to find along the way. It doesn’t take very long but is a good spot to dry off or warm up and includes a tunnel under the water.

11. Special needs

The park is flat and all roads and paths are paved so wheelchairs users can go everywhere.

Those with a hidden disability such as anxiety, autism or ADHD can collect a ’show consideration’ wristband.

Disabled and ’show consideration’ access to rides is via the exits or sometimes through the Q-bot entrance.

12. Buying tickets

Buy online to save money and to save time queuing for tickets and download the free, official app to plan your trip.

13. Don’t miss the new Lego House

If you are after another Lego experience – try the big Lego House, which has opened in Billund and is within walking distance of Legoland.

This 12,000-square-metre house is filled with 25 million Lego bricks.

Here, children learn through play with Lego. The house also includes three restaurants and a Lego store.

Lego House in Billund

14. The history

You can go to other Legoland parks, but only one place is the home of Lego.

Almost every visitor stops for an iconic photo outside the main entrance sign. Save time getting in by doing this at the end of the day not the beginning, when the shot will be more clear of people.

This park is not huge but it is historic and has enough to keep you entertained for a full day or a couple of days.

Advance entry starts from around 300DKK – about £30 – per person. For tickets and information visit the Legoland Billund website.

Denmark: Legoland and Copenhagen with kids - Family tried and tested

We travel from billund to copenhagen and drop in at the original legoland.

family tried and tested denmark

Copenhagen had been on my wishlist for years. Instagram images of the pretty multi-coloured houses of Nyhavn lining up against the canal had filled me with wanderlust for some time. But whether it was a family destination I wasn’t so sure – and since our getaway time fell slap bang in the middle of the summer holidays it seemed sensible to try and team a city break with a another stop – perhaps one more suited to summer hols and children.

We investigated Copenhagen’s beach resorts, were recommended Aarhus as a fun add-on to Copenhagen and were contemplating skipping across the border to Malmo in Sweden. But then someone suggested Legoland. Denmark is the home of Lego, and Billund , three hours’ drive from Copenhagen, is home to the original themepark. The discovery that they’d just launched a new selection of Lego Ninjago-themed cabins in the next-door Legoland Holiday Village sealed the deal.

family travel nyhavn legoland

Who needs the real Nyhavn when the lego version is so pretty?!

The flight to Billund is quick, easy and inexpensive and the airport is mere minutes from the resort. We arrived very late at night so grabbed a quick cab to the holiday village. There is one thing that cannot be ignored about Scandinavian travel and that is that things are expensive. Our taxi took minutes and cost an eyewatering £20. But check in (or out-of-hours key retrieval) was speedy and simple and before we knew it we were tucked up in bed inside our Ninjago cabin, the boys beside themselves with excitement at the ninja stars and weapons all around them.

MORE: Discover or other Family Tried and Tested destinations

Legoland itself is a dream – even in mid-August. Perhaps queues get bigger at other times of the year, but there didn’t even seem the infrastructure in the park to handle horrendously long lines, so I doubt it. For the two days we were there, we never queued longer than 15 minutes for any ride, and many we walked right on. My sons are 11 and 8 and they were perfectly aged (of course there’s masses to do for younger kids too but 11 wasn’t too old – my concern since Finn had definitely started growing out of Windsor’s offerings). There are a handful of grown up rollercoasters and a few truly terrifying (or awesome, depending on who you ask!) other rides that throw up you up, down, sideways and on your head – certainly enough fun for a tweenager!

family travel legoland starwars

Enjoying Star Wars land despite a drop of August rain

Food – like in Windsor – is a little limited and expensive but the Holiday Village had a ‘Pack Your Own Lunch’ option at the buffet breakfast for the equivalent of about £5 each, which meant you could make your own sandwiches and fill up with pastries and fruit at the breakfast bar – a perfect solution when you’ve eaten as many make-your-own pancakes as we had a few hours earlier!

MORE: Exploring cities with kids

A fabulous (and for us, unexpected) surprise was Legoland’s neighbouring Lalandia – a huge resort with amazing waterpark inside, which was included on our 2 day Legoland wristband pass. Lalandia is something else – a mixture between Vegas and Centre Parcs, an indoor village (complete with Vegas-esque false sky) offering crazy golf, trampolines, bowling, ice skating, shops, restaurants, bars and I’m sure a whole lot else. We only explored the pool (again the exchange rate and high prices made the other offerings less appealing) but the pool was MORE than enough!

The waterslides put anything we’ve ever experienced in the UK to shame – the 4-person Tornado is utterly terrifying, and a host of other rides from lazy rivers to rides on mats, or in giant donut rings, were fantastic fun. The Danes do saunas very well (and seriously) so while the kids played in the waves, we detoxed in bio saunas and lolled in Jacuzzis. The hygiene was also taken incredibly seriously (showering first without costumes on is obligatory), and first aid and customer service (when we left costumes and other items of clothes behind on both days) was faultless. The perfect afternoon antidote to a day spent in the theme park.

family travel legoland billund

Fun at the Legoland Holiday Village

The Holiday Village also had plenty to do even when you weren’t engaged with lego. There were playgrounds aplenty, a petting zoo with goats, sunken trampolines. August weather was mixed and to be honest with only two days to make the most of the parks and Lalandia we didn’t have too much time to use them but if you were staying longer or had younger kids to amuse there’s a lot of fun to be had.

MORE: Celebs on holiday with their children

We had a decision to make about our transfer to Copenhagen. There are planes, trains and automobile options and we decided to break our tradition of holiday car hire and try public transport. It was an adventure – but one I’m so glad we made. We caught the 45 bus from just outside Legoland (on the far side of the road) to Veillje Station (kids under 12 travel free across Denmark) which took about 30 minutes, and then jumped on a train to Copenhagen Central station. It took just under 3 hours and I’d probably advise booking a seat (this is doable from the automatic ticket machines) to avoid the bit of seat surfing we did, but the journey was simple and easy. As we jumped off the train into central Copenhagen I had a real feeling we’d progressed from family holidaymakers to family travellers, and it felt exciting.

Jumping on a train from Billund to Copenhagen

Our home for the next three nights was the Absalon Hotel in the city’s Vestebro area. Formerly the red light district there are remnants of its less salubrious past (the boys didn’t enquire about the few erotic shops we passed but you might want an answer or two up your sleeve if you’re walking from the station!). It’s now however an incredibly cool district and it felt really fun to be hanging out in hipster-ville en famille. A moment’s walk from the amazing Tivoli Gardens (more below) and neighbouring the super-cool Meatpacking district, restaurants and bars are all around. And the Danish are very relaxed about families – kids are welcome in bars with their parents for a drink, regardless of if they’re eating.

The highlights of our Copenhagen trip as a family of four were our Go Boat trip, our family running tour of Vestebro and our afternoon and evening spent at Tivoli. Summer is the perfect time to visit – it’s not too hot, similar to the UK, so sightseeing is pleasant but not sticky and Nyhavn lived up to Instagram expectations. Locals and tourists alike take dips in the harbour in the multitude of pools that open up around the town and the parks are full of people being fabulously outdoorsy – running, cycling (everyone cycles everywhere – adults and children alike) and generally putting us Brits to shame!

family travel copenhagen goboat

Enjoying life on our Go Boat

The city is built around a maze of canals and while exploring on foot is fun, it’ll cost you less grumbles and bribery ice creams to explore them in your very own boat. The GoBoats are superb – electric, largely solar powered vessels with a huge picnic table in the middle. You can hire them by the hour and take off (at barely more than walking pace) totally alone to explore Copenhagen’s most beautiful spots. Taking their eco-credentials seriously, GoBoat offered my two young sailors nets to catch rubbish from the harbour in. Rubbish means points, and points mean ice cream – needless to say, it was a hit! We ate a picnic lunch, stopped off at the uber-trendy Paper Island food market to grab some organic juices and pootled around for 2 blissful hours.

family travel copenhagen running tour

Lena managed to make 5k seem like something everyone should do on holiday

Less relaxed, but equally enjoyable was our next day’s family running tour   of our new neighbourhood. Our hotel had suggested this as an activity and as a keen jogger myself, I had been very keen to try. The kids had been less enthusiastic, but the reality was a huge hit. Our amazing guide Lena manged to get just over 5k out of both of them in the course of just over an hour and paced both our speed and our stop offs perfectly so as to keep the kids engaged and just tired enough at all points. It was great to discover so much about the area’s history and the daily life of ‘regular’ Danes and it meant we felt totally relaxed about tucking into the world’s biggest pizzas at Mother (in the uber-cool Meatpacking district) later that night!

family travel tivola after dark

Tivoli Gardens after dark

Tivoli Gardens is my new favourite place in the wold. After Legoland I wasn’t sure we really needed to visit the urban fairground but it’s a magical, wonderful place! There are some serious rides (I was the only one of our family of four who couldn’t manage the Golden Tower….Google it - it’s not for the faint-hearted!) but somehow Tivoli manages the perfect mix between amazing rides for kids (and big kids) and the potential for a really sophisticated evening out. Open air jazz plays into the night. Fireworks and sound-and-lights shows delight those still going after dark. And there’s a choice of swanky and chain restaurants – so upmarket dates go on side-by-side to school-party scoffing. There’s even a Wagamamas for those craving a taste of home!

family travel tivoli ride

I was happy to play photographer on this ride

Having worried about exploring Copenhagen with kids, I ended the holiday desperate to take on our next family holiday adventure. The travelling and the dual destinations were so much fun. And Copenhagen is perfect, it seems, for all members of the family - no matter how old or young, there are life-long memories to be made.

Family flies to Denmark for 24 hours to go to original Legoland – for £200 less

O n a mission to recreate an iconic British family day out on a budget, one family flew to Denmark for 24 hours to visit the original Legoland.

Amazingly, they ended up spending £200 less than they would have at the UK resort, after they found return flights for £30.

46-year-old Nicola and her 57-year-old husband, Alan Sutcliffe, treated their eight-year-old son Matthew to an adventure in Legoland Billund.

The family flew from Edinburgh on April 7 at 7:20pm, when they found the cheapest flights available, and stayed in a hotel at Legoland for £165.

‘It was amazing – we got a deal from Super.com – for a private room in the Legoland hotel,’ Nicola, who is a primary school teacher from Glasgow, said.

‘We had a view of the park and got a fabulous breakfast with pastries, pancakes and gorgeous coffee.’

They then had the whole of the next day to explore the world’s first Legoland, which originally opened in Billund in June 1968 and is located next to the original Lego factory.

Before their flight at 9:55pm, they even had time to grab dinner.

Noting that their original plan was to visit the UK version in Windsor, the family were so blown away by their experience that they’re considering doing it again.

‘We were going to go to Windsor, but we realised the original is in Denmark and it’s the home of Lego,’ Nicola added.

‘It is also where the original Lego factory is – so a lot of things were ticking boxes for us to go.

‘For all three of us it was under £100 [for the flights] – we were laughing!’

When researching their original plans to visit the Windsor branch, they discovered that a return train from Scotland would cost a whopping £195 each – or £585 in total.

To make their 24-hour trip work, they brought a small rucksack between them. And, as the weather was a balmy 16C, they didn’t need to take up extra space with raincoats – they just packed some underwear and water bottles.

Legoland is also a five-minute car ride from the airport in Denmark, which saved them money on travel costs while there.

One Glasgow-based family wanted to go to Legoland on a budget (Picture: Nicola Sutcliffe / SWNS)

On a mission to recreate an iconic British family day out on a budget, one family flew to Denmark for 24 hours to visit the original Legoland.
