OF EXPERIENCE

Bringing Dental Care to Communities That Need It Most

Welcome to Smiles Movement, a specialized division of the MEDLIFE , committed to delivering essential dental care to underserved communities in Peru & Ecuador. Our mission is simple: bring back smiles to those who don’t have the means to create their own. Through dental mobile clinics, follow-up dental care, and volunteer spirit, we have touched the lives of thousands who previously lacked access to even basic dental care.

More Than a Mission Trip

The Smiles Movement Service Learning Trips provides free, high-quality dental care directly to communities that lack access to basic services. Staffed by local practitioners from the MED Dental clinic , students will work directly with dental professionals to provide quality care.

Volunteers function in a variety of roles including:

  • Patient registration
  • Station set-up
  • Instrument preparation
  • Shadow dentists throughout procedures like extractions, fillings, and cleanings
  • Lead adolescent dental education workshops.

The Smiles Movement Difference

dentist mission trips

Listening to Community Needs

In MEDLIFE’s classic Service Learning Trips, the dental station is consistently one of the most-requested services, but the dentists are only able to treat 15 patients a day. The high demand led to the creation of the Dental Service Learning Trip through Smiles Movement, a Service Learning Trip dedicated entirely to the type of health services the communities want and need!

Working hand in hand with Local Professionals

Our Dental Service Learning Trips are staffed by local doctors and nurses. Because they speak the language, understand local systems, and provide culturally sensitive care, our patients take confidence in the work we do and the services we provide.

Education Beyond the Doctor’s Office

The MEDLIFE Dental Service Learning Trips do more than treat the immediate dental issues patients face. Our volunteers spend a day in a local school educating students on dental health and self-care topics to raise awareness, break stigmas, and provide kids with the tools to lead healthier lives.

Our Smiles Service Learning Trips

We organize multiple dental service trips each year to various locations in Peru & Ecuador.  Here’s what you can expect from a Smiles Movement trip:

Detailed orientation and training on dental care and community outreach. Community organizing workshops to prepare volunteers for effective engagement with local communities.

During the Trip

Conduct dental screenings, teeth cleanings, fillings, and when necessary, more complex procedures such as extractions. Host oral health education workshops for local communities.

Our established dental clinic in Peru serves as a permanent site for follow-up care, making sure that the communities we touch continue to have access to essential dental services.

Building a Brighter Future Together

We carefully choose our destinations to maximize impact, focusing on areas where the need for dental care is the most urgent. Currently, our missions target three key locations: Lima and Cusco in Peru, and Riobamba in Ecuador. Each of these cities presents its own set of challenges and opportunities for transformative dental care.

dentist mission trips

As the capital city, Lima offers a mix of urban and suburban communities that suffer from unequal access to dental care. Our work in Lima focuses on both immediate care and educational workshops to promote long-term oral health.

Cusco, Peru

Cusco’s rich history contrasts sharply with the dental health inequities faced by its rural communities. Our teams often trek into remote areas to provide essential dental services, armed with portable dental equipment and a strong resolve.

Riobamba, Ecuador

Situated in the Andean mountain range, Riobamba is a city where healthcare resources are notably limited. Our dental clinic in Riobamba acts as a crucial center for both immediate procedures and follow-up care.

Dental Volunteer Abroad & Medical Mission Trips | Dentists & Students

Nick Callos

By Nick Callos

VolunteerForever

Updated for 2024 – now includes information on dental internships abroad !

Calling all dentists, dental hygienists, or students aspiring to work in the dental health field are interested in dental volunteer abroad and dental elective projects !

In some countries, a lack of access to oral healthcare and education puts children and adults at risk of developing serious medical problems. Currently, oral diseases and conditions affect 3.58 billion people worldwide,  according to a World Health Organization report . As dental health is one of the most underserved healthcare fields, there are dental volunteer projects around the globe that need your expertise.

If you have a passion for helping others, why not put your dental skills and passion to dentistry to good use? Many great projects are mobilizing skilled volunteers like yourself to maintain smiles and promote good oral health.

In this article, we’ll give a comprehensive snapshot of what overseas dental volunteering abroad is like and give you advice from fellow volunteers. We’ll also point you towards reputable, high-quality dental volunteer projects and super affordable dentistry elective projects, such as those offered by International Volunteer HQ (over 130,000 volunteers to-date!), Volunteering Solutions , and GoEco . We’ll also highlight awesome intern abroad projects such as Intern Abroad HQ’s dentistry intern program , Maximo Nivel’s dental internship abroad programs in Latin America , and Projects Abroad’s six dental internships around the world!

Dental Volunteering and Interning Abroad: What’s Involved?

dentist mission trips

Dental volunteering and interning abroad encompasses a broad range of work and activities. Dental health volunteer experiences could vary based on location, the needs of the local population, the specific mission of the volunteer abroad project / internship, and the skills that you bring to the table.

Typical activities include:

  • Preventative dental care
  • Dental health education (brushing and flossing techniques, etc.)
  • Common pediatric oral care procedures
  • Dental health screenings
  • Extractions
  • Root canals and scaling
  • Support to dental hygienists
  • Maintenance of dental equipment
  • Other support roles associated with running a mobile dental clinic
  • Specialized oral health practices such as maxillofacial or orthodontics

Consider your preferences for location and project type, as well as your own expertise level. Know many programs can customize the program to fit your education and experience. For instance, for Projects Abroad’s dental volunteering program in Cordoba, Argentina , the program will arrange your daily work based on your skills and qualifications (though do note that intermediate Spanish is a requirement). It’s a great option for both pre-dental students and professional dentists. Those who’ve completed one year of dental school mostly observe and assist as needed. Those with two or more years of dental schooling and/or practical experience can perform hands-on dental care (at the discretion of the local professionals). On the other hand, Projects Abroad’s dentistry internship in Mexico  suits dental students, but is mostly an observational role. It’s a great learning experience and will enhance your resume. The project is just designed for those not yet ready to perform more serious dental care.

Who can Serve as a Dental Health Volunteer or Intern?

Obviously, dental volunteer abroad projects suit established dentists and dental hygienists. But you don’t have to be an oral health professional to volunteer for dental care abroad.

Most organizations, such as affordably-priced   Maximo Nivel (top-ranked on Volunteer Forever), accept pre-dental students as well as other volunteers who are able to donate their time, passion for helping others, and skills to a good cause. After all, maintaining a dental clinic requires more than a dental surgery team. Unskilled volunteers and volunteers coming from another occupation can serve in important support roles—and have a big impact if they’re enthusiastic and hard-working.

As example, check out who all Projects Abroad’s dental volunteer abroad projects are open to:

We offer a range of dental programs, including:  Dental internships for high school students Internships for pre-dental students Dental internships for college students Dentistry volunteer opportunities for professionals  No matter which dental internship you choose, we can tailor the experience to fit your level. You can also trust in the Projects Abroad guarantee : that all of our programs are safe, flexible, and hassle-free. Once you arrive in-country, all you need to worry about is the wealth of knowledge there is for you to absorb!

However, there are some guidelines that dental students and other responsible volunteers should uphold when volunteering for oral health, such as  these guidelines  (PDF Download) recommended by the  American Dental Education Association (ADEA) . These guidelines not only establish professional standards for international  volunteer work , but also help volunteers build expectations of what they’ll reasonably be asked to do in a dental volunteer abroad project.

A few things to point out:

  • You and your volunteer abroad organization may have noble intentions. However, underprepared and untrained dental volunteers can have a negative impact on local communities. This negative impact could include harm to the patients and legal issues with local authorities.
  • Scam volunteer abroad placement organizations do exist. ADEA warns dental and pre-dental students that being involved with shady international dental work could damage the student’s future acceptance into dental schools.  Do your due diligence,  and only join programs with  reputable volunteer abroad organizations  (like those mentioned in this article).
  • Pre-dental students and other non-qualified volunteers should only accept clinical experiences in which they are asked to  observe and support  outside of the operating room,  not assist with procedures . Pre-dental students should also look for programs that cater specifically to students. These programs feature more appropriate tasks for students and the organizations that run them have more experience with the educational facet of volunteering abroad. Additionally, some may have the proper qualifications and agreements with universities to exchange college credit for your volunteer time.
  • All volunteers, regardless of skill level, should prioritize the welfare of the patient—not their own opportunity to gain experience or what they think may help the patient. Leave any decision-making to the professionals in charge. Sometimes volunteering abroad isn’t as hands-on as many volunteers imagine. But their work still greatly benefits the local community.

As you can see, volunteering abroad for dentistry is highly sophisticated. In many cases, projects work in conjunction with professional organizations like the  American Dental Association (ADA)  or the  Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) . This ensures international dental projects are held to the highest standards for medical and dental care.

Ready to Volunteer or Intern Abroad for Dental Care?

Now that you’re all on board to volunteer / intern and understand what to expect, let’s discuss the programs. The projects listed here come highly recommended by our volunteers and interns, are committed to making the world a better place, and provide dental volunteers / interns with meaningful experiences.

Work the World

Work the World  specializes in bringing experiential overseas internships to students and graduate students in medical fields. With more than 10 years of experience in the international volunteering industry, Work the World has local partners in countries in Africa, Asia, and South America, and has a wealth of knowledge pertaining to making sure that all medical placements are fully vetted and volunteers are properly supported. As part of a safe and accredited local clinic, interns may participate in general dentistry procedures such as scalings, extractions, fillings, and root canal work. There are also specialist placements in oral cancer, maxillofacial, and surgery. Locations include Mexico, Peru, Nepal, and Ghana.

Gap Medics projects combine health care instruction with real-world experience so you can develop useful occupational skills.

For their pre-dentistry volunteer abroad programs, Gap Medics accepts applicants of any level of background knowledge, but specializes their programs to benefit high school students interested in a medical career, university students, or early-career graduate students. If you’re in high school and want to be a dentist, definitely consider Gap Medics (see details below).

When you’re not working at the medical facility, tour Warsaw, a sprawling and historic capital, or have fun in La Romana, a pretty city on the Caribbean coast. Programs often fill up many months beforehand,  so choose your location and apply as soon as possible if you’re interested.

Understanding the Costs for Dental Volunteer Abroad Projects

As you’re researching medical mission trip opportunities, keep in mind all the expenses. You may be responsible for:

  • Program Fees  (From $180 up to $3,000+)
  • Airfare  (Up to $1,000+)
  • Necessary expenses:  travel insurance, medications, vaccinations, visa fees, etc (up to $500+)
  • Miscellaneous in-country expenses:  shopping, sightseeing, etc (varies)

When you add it all up, a medical mission trip could cost you anywhere from  a few hundred dollars to over $4,000 . Costs vary based on the program, plane ticket prices, and other factors, like visa fees and amount of medical care required before departure.

To keep your costs down, consider an  affordable, high-quality program . Furthermore, most organizations offer discounts the longer you stay. So, an eight-week dentistry internship abroad may cost 25% less per week than a four-week placement.

You should also inquire about volunteer perks. For instance,  Agape Volunteers , an organization with lots of great  volunteer programs in Africa , offers free travel insurance. That eliminates an expense.

Some other money-saving strategies include:

  • Applying for  volunteer abroad scholarship and grants :  The  Volunteer Forever Travel Scholarship  can get you up to $500 or $1000 for your volunteer or  intern abroad  trip.
  • Fundraising :  Medical mission trip participants can be very successful when it comes to fundraising for their trip. For example, the medical mission organization,  International Service Learning , has over 300 fundraisers on Volunteer Forever! Fundraisers such as Charley, Alicia, and Kendra have each raised over $3,500 for their trip.
  • Looking for  cheap flights :  Airfare can sometimes account for over half of your volunteer abroad expenses, especially if you’re flying across the world (like from Canada to Thailand). Book well in advance, use miles or points, and/or fly during non-peak season. Some organizations, such as  International Volunteer HQ , work with a team of  humanitarian flight agents  to get volunteers cheap tickets.

So, while volunteering abroad for dental care can seem expensive, you can offset the cost by planning ahead, employing smart strategies, and utilizing your resources!

Let’s Recap! Dental Volunteering and Medical Mission Trips Abroad

Dental volunteering abroad presents a unique opportunity to  make a positive impact  and grow as a person and medical professional. Whether you’re trained in the oral healthcare field or not, you can find a suitable program and  make a difference in the oral health needs of children and families  across the globe.

Depending on where you are in your studies or occupation, volunteering abroad for dental care can have a variety of benefits.

If you’re an established dental professional, you can spread your valuable skills and knowledge to local communities. You can utilize your skills to treat those who don’t have adequate access to oral healthcare. And you get to  work in a new environment  and possibly even in a different field of expertise. That can be very exciting.

For dental and pre-dental students, dentistry volunteering and  internships  enable you to observe your field in its most basic role—helping people. Since oral healthcare is so difficult to obtain in many parts of the world, many communities rely on dental volunteers and students to fill in the gaps. Furthermore, you’ll gain crucial real-world experience when you volunteer abroad for dental care, which can not only boost your resume, but also help you figure out what you want to do in dentistry.

In short, dental volunteering abroad means the chance to make a tangible impact as a skilled volunteer. Like with unskilled volunteer abroad opportunities, the most beautiful benefits come from  serving and helping people . You can improve health outcomes and lives. And you’ll make lasting connections with those you serve.

Just remember: The patients that you serve must be the primary beneficiaries of your volunteer abroad service!  Thoroughly research programs  and make certain they abide by ADEA guidelines (like those listed here).

Ready for Your Dental Volunteer Adventure?

Now that you’re informed, start planning your dental or pre-dental volunteer abroad journey. Consider your dentistry experience and qualifications, as well as your goals, budget, and preferences for location.

To streamline your search, and cut expenses,  set up your Volunteer Forever profile . Apply to your project and  begin fundraising on our platform . Other volunteers have raised thousands for their trip—and you can too!

5 Dental Mission Trip Opportunities

  • Resource Library 5 Dental Mission Trip Opportunities

dentist mission trips

Medical missionaries share a passion for meeting the needs of those who are suffering around the world. But that suffering takes many forms. For some, it could be illness or disease. For others, though, the skills and compassion of a dentist is required.

That’s what makes dental mission trips so vital. Dentists and their co-workers carry on ministries that other medical professionals can’t provide. They fill an important niche that can be used as a springboard to share the greatest message of all, the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Mission Trips for Dental Experts

If you’re a medical professional in the dental field, be assured that God has a place for you in fulfilling the Great Commission. Dental mission trips are expanding in number and scope. Like their counterparts in general practice and optometry, dental professionals are finding new opportunities to use their gifts and talents for God’s glory.

In the list below, we’ve highlighted five sending agencies that provide mission trips for dentists. These organizations have reliable track records of service and are considered partner agencies with the Global Health Missions Conference . If you’re wondering what’s available for you, these groups can be a great starting point for your research.

"Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:16-20

1. Carolina Honduras Health Foundation

Based in South Carolina, the Carolina Honduras Health Foundation has been providing short-term dental mission trips for more than a quarter of a century. They strive to bring quality care to the poorest regions of Honduras, working through a local clinic and other sites in the country. In addition to hands-on care, Carolina Honduras also supports education for local dental professionals to improve the quality of care on a larger scale.

2. Christian Medical and Dental Associates

Christian Medical and Dental Associates (CMDA) is a respected sending organization that provides opportunities for both short-term and long-term experiences. The group’s commitment is to use the skills of its medical and dental professionals to earn a hearing for the gospel, treating physical needs as a way to address spiritual needs. Some short-term teams provide educational ministry, while others focus on supporting CMDA missionaries in clinics.

3. SmileFaith

While many dental mission trips minister outside the borders of the United States, SmileFaith is committed to domestic missions. Founded in Florida, the group is heavily invested in the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky. Over time, SmileFaith has established clinics throughout that area and provides a rolling “mobile clinic” that serves various communities. SmileFaith’s mission statement includes providing “hope with every smile,” emphasizing the gospel as the greatest need people have.

4. Good Samaritan Medical and Dental Ministries

While every mission trip for dental professionals involves “giving back” to some degree, Good Samaritan takes that concept literally. Founded by Vietnamese refugees, this California-based ministry provides basic dental care and oral surgeries in underserved regions of Vietnam. Throughout the year, dental mission trip teams travel into areas where traditional missionaries might not be allowed, as God uses them to make a difference in that nation.

5. Baptist Medical and Dental Mission International

The founders of Baptist Medical and Dental Mission International served as missionaries to Honduras. During their time in that country, the physical pain and suffering they encountered convinced them that doctors and dentists could serve the dual purpose of meeting physical needs and spreading the gospel. Since 1974, Baptist Medical and Dental has sponsored dental mission trips to minister to individuals in places like Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Nepal.

Find Your Medical Missions Calling

Of course, these five organizations are just the tip of the iceberg. New organizations continue to see the potential of mission trips for dentists and dental professionals. So, if God is calling you to use your skills and gifts for His glory on a dental mission trip, the opportunities are there. With a little research, you can make a short-term or long-term difference on the mission field sooner than you realize.

God has given you a heart for healthcare. He’s also given you a heart for missions. Those two passions don’t have to be an “either/or.” They can combine to be a beautiful “both/and” through medical mission trips.

Medical Missions serves to connect your professional skills and biblical calling to the largest database of healthcare mission organizations, professionals, and thought leadership. Join us at the  Global Missions Health Conference  to find your Medical Missions calling. Or,  browse our full list of partner organizations  to find the right mission for you.

You Don’t Have To Be a Dentist To Volunteer ... General Volunteers Welcome!

dentist mission trips

Global Dental Relief welcomes people of all ages, occupations, nationalities, and backgrounds to join us and volunteer abroad! Anyone with a love for children, a spirit of adventure and a passion to make a difference in the world is welcome on a volunteer mission trip.

Group sizes vary depending on clinic location. In general, group sizes range from 16 to 18 volunteers. Small Adventure trips feature smaller teams of up to 10 volunteers.

Absolutely! GDR hosts a variety of groups on our volunteer mission trips each year. Trips can accommodate 5 dentists, 1-2 hygienists and 8 general volunteers.

The minimum age to volunteer overseas is 14. For families with youth under the age of 14, please call our office and speak with one of our Country Coordinators directly.

It is important to remember that GDR clinics are fast-paced and require a fair amount of physical activity. Children under the age of 14 often have a hard time adjusting to the field conditions (no AC, hot/humid climates, long workdays, etc.) found at GDR’s volunteer abroad programs.

The most important skills needed to volunteer internationally are an open mind and a willingness to be a team player and work hard!

GDR has volunteer opportunities for dentists, hygienists and non-medical volunteers. We require our clinical volunteers to be fully licensed. We follow all guidelines set forth by the ADA® (American Dental Association) in terms of licensure.

General volunteers are trained on-site during the project briefing.

GDR does not require previous volunteer experience. Dental students and hygiene students are welcome to volunteer in our mission trips.

Global Dental Relief volunteer programs often fill up six to eight months in advance. We encourage our volunteers to register and submit a deposit as early as possible! For folks who are interested in a specific clinic but need time to plan, we are happy to save your place for up to two weeks.

Last minute openings do occur — contact our office directly to find out if there is an opening on a specific volunteer trip. GDR operates 30 clinics a year – click below to view our schedule of volunteer opportunities:

  • Volunteer in Kenya
  • Volunteer in Cambodia
  • Volunteer in India
  • Volunteer in Mexico
  • Volunteer in Guatemala
  • Volunteer in Nepal
  • Volunteer in Kentucky

Yes! GDR strives to provide affordable dental volunteer opportunities. Many Global Dental Relief volunteers successfully fundraise all or a portion of their volunteer program fees. Volunteers interested in fundraising can refer to our Guide to Volunteer Fundraising packet for tips and support.

Additionally, we provide a personal payment link for all volunteers to make fundraising easy and user friendly for those who wish to contribute!

Once you have registered for a project, your Country Coordinator will work with you directly to put together a fundraising or payment plan that is right for you.

Global Dental Relief will provide a tax letter for all donations over $25.

Yes! Global Dental Relief started working at our first domestic dental clinic location in 2021. Surrounded by the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, volunteers work in a rural community where 60% of children live without access to dentistry. The closest dentist is a two-hour drive, and many in the community lack both transportation as well as the resources to pay for care. Days are spent working in the clinic, while evenings are spent enjoying the local trails, mountain scenery and regional history in this bucolic setting. Working in collaboration with SmileFaith, a 501(c)(3) organization, volunteers provide dental care to children in and around Jenkins, Kentucky.

Global Dental Relief offers volunteer opportunities in 6 different countries outside the US – in Kenya, India, Nepal, Guatemala, Mexico, and Cambodia.

Each international volunteer location provides a unique short-term volunteer opportunity and immersion in the local culture. Whether you prefer more rugged or comfortable voluntourism opportunities, GDR has a mission trip abroad that is right for you!

Global Dental Relief’s volunteer abroad programs offer a unique opportunity for students to join a short term dental volunteer program to prepare them for their future career! Students work alongside licensed dentists and hygienists, gaining firsthand clinical experience and connecting with their chosen career in a brand-new light.

All students join GDR mission trips as general volunteers. You can find more information about student volunteer duties here .

Global Dental Relief follows all guidelines set forth by the American Dental Association® (ADA). Any volunteer performing dental procedures inside our field dental clinics must be fully licensed at the time of the project. Fourth- and fifth-year dental student volunteers are not allowed to practice dentistry on our dental mission trips.

GDR welcomes donations of dental supplies used in general dentistry. Donations can be sent to our office in Denver or brought by volunteers directly to a service trip with prior confirmation with the office. Supplies & Equipment Needed for our Dental Service Trips:

  • Fluoride Varnish
  • Sealant and Etch material
  • Composite material
  • Spoon excavators

  • Slow and high-speed handpieces

What Volunteers Say

After my first dental volunteer trip I was sure to do this continuously no matter what! This is helping kids in need effectively. This is having enjoyable conversations with new friends. This is creating unforgettable memories. So in my specific case the letters GDR stand for the German Dentist Returns :)”

- Wolfgang Pfannenstiel, Dentist, Germany

As a dentist, I have treated and cared for many patients, however, nothing can compare to the sense of fulfilment when volunteering your time and skill to ease the pain and suffering of others. Laura Collier

Chairperson,oakland university medical brigades chapter.

Passion. This word sparked my initiative to implement a positive change in today’s world. Inevitably, in combination with my passion for medicine, this initiative paved my journey towards health equity; I strove to help aid the billion people suffering in destitute poverty with little, or no access to healthcare. As a product of passion, I launched a chapter of Global Medical Brigades at Oakland University. Together, as a group of Oakland University students, we worked to organize and plan a medical brigade. Our goal was to provide free healthcare to as many people as possible in a rural Honduran community.

Global Brigades launched with the insight of this powerful idea; that, as students, we have the capability of changing our world, and empowering our collegiate communities. As students we stand as influential advocates for global health, and socioeconomic development in the Developing World…

Global Brigades has provided me with so many incredible opportunities. My Honduran experiences reaffirmed my passion for humanitarianism, as well as, medicine. Not only have I grown as a person, but the skills I have acquired as a Global Brigades’ student leader are priceless. Thank you, Global Brigades and all the wonderful student leaders Global Brigades encompasses. Keep up the great work!

Volunteer, university of georgia dental brigades chapter.

My experience with global brigade in Honduras was truly life changing. My family all came from poverty in Latin America, but I had never taken the time to truly considered the relation between their oral health and their economic situation in depth. After being exposed to the conditions in rural Honduras I felt truly connected me with the life my parents lived at a young age in Mexico. It taught me so much about a life I never knew, but not only that, but it also expanded my overall knowledge on oral health. I learned about a different approach to treatment and learned about the mouth from different perspectives than I had before. I also made some of the most valuable connections I have ever made with the people I met on this trip. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

Godzillas Hostel is located in the center of Moscow, just a short walk from all the major tourist attractions and the metro station.

  • Towels Included

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
