The Complete Guide to Devkund Waterfall Trek

Devkund waterfall is a secluded little place situated deep inside the forests surrounding the Bhira dam. There is a hydroelectric power generation unit by Tata power at Bhira. This place was little known to trekkers till recent times and has come into the limelight due to the waterfall present deep inside the forest.

It is believed that the Kundalika river originates at Devkund.

Though there isn’t much history associated with the falls, locals here believe that once upon a time utensils used to emerge from the Kund (pond) whenever there was any auspicious ceremony happening in the local village.

True or not, the place has its charm with the water dropping from a height of over 80 ft straight into a pond of approx. 30 mt diameter.

➤ Highlights of the trek

  • Easy trek through dense forest, which brings you to the base of Devkund waterfall
  • Option to camp along the waters of the Bhira reservoir

➤ Trek Details

  • Altitude:  2,000 ft
  • Time took:  1.5 hours each way
  • Trek gradient:  Easy. Flat walk with a few, short stretches of gradual ascent.
  • Water sources:  None. Carry two litres of water

The trail begins from the open parking area at Bhira. It is a well-laid path with direction boards at regular intervals. Unlike common belief, the chances of getting lost in the forest are almost nil. The trail is better laid than a few famous treks in Maharashtra.

For the first 30 minutes, the trail goes alongside the Bhira dam reservoir. In case you wish to stay overnight, this is a good place to set up camp as camping is not allowed near the waterfalls. The backdrop of the reservoir makes this a perfect camping location.

A slight descent from here will take you along the banks of the reservoir from where the trail advances further into the forest. In the first 45 mins, you have to cross 2 dried up streams separated by a distance of around 20 mins. The terrain is a mix of open meadows and overgrowth.

After this, the trail starts climbing for around minutes. Though the climb isn’t steep, a good amount of energy is required. You may find small huts selling tea, lemon juice and snacks along the way. This climb is through dense forest, hence little care needs to be taken while manoeuvring through the branches.

Post the completion of the climb, the trail opens up to a rocky patch. A 10 min walk through the rocks brings you directly in front of the waterfall.

Locals have marked a line of control bisecting the pond. Swimming in the first half of the bisection is allowed. No one is allowed to go to the point where the water hits the ground as the depth over there is around 60 feet and there have been incidences of visitors drowning in it.

October to mid-November would be the best time to experience the falls if one needs to click better pictures.

The trek is closed from July to September for tourists when the rain is at its peak.

Points to note:

  • Lunch/Dinner is available at the base village. Small huts offering tea, lemon juice, and chips are found on the way.
  • Camping near the waterfall is not allowed. However, you can camp near the reservoir. Also, you can stay at Bhira village.
  • Villagers have set up a registration desk at the beginning of the trail. You need to hire a local guide here. Although no guide is required for the trail, the people at the registration desk insist you on taking a guide (the recent popularity of this place may have made them realize that this can be a source of income).
  • There is a parking fee of INR 50. Guides charge INR 50 per head. Entry check post by Bhira Grampanchayat charge os INR 10 per person (kaccha receipts given).

➤ How to reach the base of the Devkund Waterfall trek

The base village to reach Devkund waterfall is Bhira. This is located 26 km from Pali village (famous for the Ballaleshwar Ganpati temple). There are two options to reach Pali.

The first option is to take the direct state transport bus from Panvel depot to Pali while the second option is to get down at Vakan (all buses going to Mahad and beyond via Mumbai Goa highway stop at Vakan). From Vakan, there are shared autos that take you to Pali. Autos charge INR 20-25 per person and take around 30 minutes to reach Pali. State transport buses from Pali to Bhira are also available but the frequency is very less. So the best way to travel is by personal or hired vehicle.

What Makes The Trek Moderate To Difficult

The trail is flat for about 70% of the trek, The remaining 30 percent climbs up is uphill through thick forest and boulders. To complete the trek, you need to cross 3-4 river streams which is where things get tricky if it is raining. If it is raining at that time, the water pressure in these river streams is a lot which is powerful enough to wash away people with its pressure. Nestled near Bhira in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, the Devkund Waterfall is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Having recently embarked on the Devkund Waterfall trek, I am thrilled to share the enchanting experience of this 'plunge' waterfall that pours massive amounts of water on the rocky surface below.

Trekking Through Nature's Canvas: The Devkund Waterfall Trek

The Devkund Waterfall trek covers a distance of about 5-6 km on one side, offering a moderate trekking experience of approximately 4 hours. The difficulty level is easy, making it accessible to both seasoned trekkers and those new to the adventure. The trek route, plain for the majority, reveals its magic as it winds through lush jungles, gushing rivers, tiny hamlets, and mountain valleys.

Nature's Tapestry: Rocky Terrain and Muddy Trails

The terrain evolves along the way, getting rocky and muddy in many places. Trekkers traverse through 3-4 streams, vast open fields, and charming wooden bridges that add a touch of whimsy to the journey. The ascent towards the end of the trail, approximately 300 ft, adds a bit of challenge, but the breathtaking scenery makes every step worthwhile.

Scenic Surprises: Mulshi Dam and Bhira Village

En route to Devkund, the trek takes you past Mulshi Dam, also known as Tata Power Dam, a hydroelectric power-generating marvel. The quaint village of Bhira serves as a charming waypoint, offering a glimpse into the local way of life. The juxtaposition of modern engineering against the backdrop of rustic simplicity creates a unique and picturesque scene.

Streams and Serenity: Devkund's Secluded Falls

The culmination of the trek brings you to the secluded Devkund Waterfall, a mesmerizing sight as it gracefully pours its waters onto the rocky canvas below. The sound of rushing water, the misty atmosphere, and the untouched beauty of the surroundings create an aura of tranquility – a perfect reward for the trek.

Devkund Unveiled: A Personal Perspective

My journey to Devkund Waterfall was not just a trek; it was a revelation of nature's artistry. The meandering trails, rocky terrains, and the surprise encounters with streams and wooden bridges made each step an adventure. Devkund's secluded falls, hidden in the heart of Maharashtra, now hold a special place in my heart – a testament to the beauty that can be found when one ventures off the beaten path.

Conclusion: Nature's Symphony in Maharashtra

Devkund Waterfall is not just a destination; it's a symphony of nature waiting to be explored. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or someone looking for an easy yet rewarding adventure, this trek offers an unforgettable journey through the diverse landscapes of Maharashtra. So, lace up your boots, embrace the call of the wilderness, and let Devkund unveil its wonders to you.

My experience on Devkund waterfall trek with Onacheaptrip

Devkund waterfall in october

I went to Devkund waterfall Trek in July, when the monsoon is generally at its peak, and oh boy! I was mesmerized to the apex. I had moved to Pune in monsoon and the city’s texture in the season was what had primarily induced love for the city in me. I always crave for beautiful monsoon experiences near-by Pune and this one was an important tick off my bucket list.

River at Devkund Trek

Kundalika river as seen on Devkund Waterfall trek

Devkund is located near Bhira in Raigad district . Dev means god, and Kund means a reservoir, the place is till date so true to its name. It is a confluence of three waterfalls and is said to be the origin of Kundalika river. Devkund has recently gained popularity and finally, I could go there this year. It is a substantial plunge waterfall, where the water from a high prominence, directly drops down without touching the rocks. The sound of the fall is therapeutic and the water is pristine and crystal clear. The place is magic- unspoiled and pure.

It would be very unfair if I keep on glorifying the waterfall and not the journey that leads to it. The trek starts from Bhira village and it takes about 2 to 3 hours to reach the waterfall. The trek is easy and very picturesque. There is a lake in the initial trail patch- Bhira lake, with a hut on the side. My first reaction to the sight was that I want to live my life here!!! Though my reaction was spurious, did not last long and I actually didn’t stay, I wasn’t disappointed at all.

jungle crossing on Devkund Trek

The trek route passes through dense jungle

The trek got more and more pleasing as the count of my steps increased. It was only green wherever I could see (such a rare sight when you live in a populated city), on my right were mountains with numerous tiny waterfalls, and adding to the fine experience, it was raining.

Then moving ahead, we had to cross the river a few times. The increased water flow was making it difficult but it was so worth it. At a glance, I was seeing clouds, big fresh green mountains and river flowing parallel. It was heavenly. The trek is mostly through the forest with a few ascends towards the end, which is not very difficult and very rewarding when you finally get to see the waterfall, which you were hearing since a while.

Once I reached Devkund Waterfall, I couldn’t contain myself from getting immersed in the reservoir completely. This is what you do when you get access to nature in its such pure form.

Thanks to Abhishek and his venture onacheaptrip that has aided me to have such a great experience. The trek was managed so nicely and we did not face any glitch or hassle at all. Transport, guide and food arrangements were on time and smooth, which is such a relief during travelling. I am really looking forward to doing more treks with him in future .

How to reach Devkund Waterfall:

Devkund Waterfall is around 100 kilometres from Pune. There is no direct transport available to reach Devkund Waterfall from Pune. You will have to change buses at Khopoli and Pali to reach Bhira Village which is the base village of Devkund Waterfall Trek. From Mumbai, one can get down at Karjat, and take a bus to Pali and then change bus to reach Bhira. Remember, frequency of buses from Pali to Bhira is quite low.

How to reach Devkund Waterfall from Pune

From Pune, if you are travelling by your own transport, you can take the scenic Tamhini Ghat road route. Just put in Devkund waterfall Trek Start Point on Gmaps to reach the exact location from where the trek begins. To identify the start point, look for Bhira Dam or Tata Power Plant. Take left from the Power Plant to enter the village. There are some food stalls in the village, and the end of it is a small parking and the starting point of the trail.

Difficulty level of Devkund Waterfall trek

I would rate Devkund Waterfall trek as an easy to medium level trek in terms of difficulty. The trek length is approximately 10 kilometres in total. Generally, it takes around 5-6  hours to complete the trek. The trail is well marked and the terrain is mostly flat with a few ascends towards the end. If you are a beginner in trekking, this trek is a perfect fit for you.

Best time to visit Devkund Waterfall Trek

This waterfall can be enjoyed at its best during the monsoon. The amount of water in the stream depends completely on rainfall. Generally, the waterfall has a good flow until mid-October. Depending on the weather conditions, the waterfall is closed for visitors when it gets risky.

There were reported cases of deaths and since then, it has become mandatory to have a local villager as a guide in monsoon who charges Rs. 50/- per person. It is advisable to contact the villagers beforehand to know the situation. Also, even at other times, it is safer to have a guide along.

We set out from Pune at the first hour in the morning so that we reach our destination at the earliest. As the waterfall is gaining popularity with time, it tends to get crowded as time passes. I would recommend you to start early to have a larger probability of having the waterfall to yourself.

Food and stay options at Devkund Waterfall trek

You can enjoy the local food in the base village of Bhira. We did our breakfast and Lunch at Shelar Mama Niwas. The food was delicious and I would highly recommend them. Also, there are small stalls all along the way where you can get the basic refreshments.

For stay option, you can enquire at the base village as few villagers provide homestays and lodging facilities. Also, you can pitch your own tent at flat spaces or near the Bhira Dam.

If you have more days with you and looking forward to doing another trek in the region, you can check out the Andharban jungle Trek which also begins from Bhira Village.

The “bathing pond of Gods” or the Devkund waterfall is one of the most scenic and beautiful places in nature’s serenity. It is a short, one-day trek, which allows the trekkers to get a break from chaos of city life. The Devkrund trek from Mumbai is characteristic of lush greenery, witnessing the massive waterfall, and finding themselves in the lap of nature.

The Devkund waterfall is located in Bhira village of Maharashtra, which is in the Raigad district. The waterfalls lie on the rugged Western Ghats; hence, their beauty and splendour are unparalleled. Devkund waterfall is well connected by road and railway, so you need not worry about the travel.

How to Travel:

Being situated near Kolad, the Devkund waterfall is easily accessible from Mumbai and Pune. The Devkund trek from Pune, around 110 km from Mumbai, is around 170 km.

Trekkers can take their car or rent one for the journey. It takes about seven hours from Mumbai and five hours from Pune to reach the base village, Bhira. Using the Mumbai Pune Expressway is the ideal option. To reach Bhira, you will need to drive to Karjat. After some light refreshments, you have to go to Pali and their final destination, the scenic village of Bhira. You may find some problems with parking the car. So, you could rather book or rent a car because it is a one-day trek.

The journey from Mumbai to Devkund and Pune to Devkund is pleasant and the easiest way to reach Devkund. But, even then, if you are interested in traveling by rail, there are no direct trains to Bhira from Pune or Mumbai. Instead, you must take a train from Khopoli and then a bus from there.

Best Time to Visit :-

  • The ideal time for the trek is from June to January. The majestic waterfalls and the greenery get a new lease of life during the rainy season. The surrounding valleys, streams, and dams look splendid under the cloud-filled sky.
  • The temperature in Maharashtra remains moderate from June to January. So, the trekkers do not feel uncomfortable or face any kind of discomfort while trekking. However, the temperature starts soaring in mid-February, and the trek can be difficult to undertake under the scorching sun.

Trek Facts :-

  • The Devkund Trek is approximately five to six kilometres long one way. The trek from the base village to Devkund will take around three hours.
  • The trek is for one day. So, this is an easy way to excuse yourself from the mundane city life and rejuvenate yourself amidst nature.
  • The trek commences at an easy level but can get difficult towards the end. The Devkund trek difficulty is moderate. The journey from the base village to the waterfall is filled with little streams and open green fields. The trek is on plain land. There is an ascent of about 300 ft towards the end of the trek.
  • Trekkers must carry their trekking shoes, torch, water bottle, mosquito repellent sprays, and some form of identification. An extra pair of clothes should be carried if you go for the trek in the monsoon months.
  • The Devkund waterfalls are at a majestic height of 2700 ft.

Highlights :-

  • The Waterfall: Situated in a dense green forest called Devkund, the Devkund waterfall is a combination of three rivers. It is known as the origin of the river known as Kundalika. Devkund trek from Pune’s highlight is witnessing this lofty waterfall. It is a plunge waterfall. The waterfall comes down with a great force on the rocky surface below, forming a pool of turquoise waters. Devkund waterfalls are among the very few perennial waterfalls in Maharashtra. Hence, the waterfall is always gushing with fresh water. The forest around the waterfall is brimming with several species of trees and a host of birds and animals. After a day-long trek, when the trekkers can catch the sunset, the beauty is unparalleled. With the Tamhini Ghat sprawling in front of them and the sound of the waterfall, this can make for one of the most beautiful sunsets the trekkers will experience. The white water comes down from a height of eighty meters. Below, this waterfall forms a natural pool of approximately thirty diameters. If the trekkers carry extra clothes, they can swim in this natural pool. The cool waters of the waterfall act as a natural therapy to some.
  • Tamhini Ghat: This mountain pass between Mulsi and Tamhini is a must visit. It is located right at the crux of the Western Ghats. It boasts several varieties of exotic plants, dense woods, mystical clouds descending on the green forest, and a myriad of streams and waterfalls.
  • Mulsi Dam: While you are on the way to Devkund, you will cross Mulsi Dam. This hydroelectric power dam is also known as Tata Power Dam. It is situated in the base village, Bhira. Operated and run by Tata Power, the water from this dam is used for irrigation and producing electricity. The Musli Dam has a historical significance attached to it. This was the third dam constructed by the Tata Power Company Ltd.
  • River Rafting: If you are not afraid of the water, love adventures, and have been waiting for an opportunity to go river rafting, then this is the ideal place for you. Many people who come for the Devkund trek from Mumbai go river rafting in the nearby Kundalika river. The Kundalika River is popular for river rafting and is situated only some kilometres away from the Devkund waterfalls. So, the trekkers can finish their trek and have the most adventurous experience.
  • Lush Greenery: From the base village Bhira to the waterfalls through the Devkund forest, the journey becomes even more beautiful due to the canopy of trees surrounding you. Being situated on the Western Ghats and close to the Andharban forest, this trek boasts of natural beauty to its supreme.

The Devkund trek will be a therapy for the trekkers away from the monotonous city and professional life. The trek being short can be planned for the weekend easily. So, plan your next trek to Devkund already!

27 very L.A. ways to spend time with Mom — or not — on Mother’s Day

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

A few years ago, I compiled a list of things to do on Mother’s Day focused on the concept — and I’ll quote myself here — “that spending time with you [their children] is what most moms really want for Mother’s Day.”

Shortly after my well-intentioned roundup was published, I received some feedback from moms: Not everyone wants to spend time with their children on Mother’s Day, especially if they are younger than 3.

On a day dedicated to celebrating mothers, carving out a little “me time” can be a valuable opportunity for self-care and relaxation .

Planning your weekend?

Stay up to date on the best things to do, see and eat in L.A .

Fortunately, Los Angeles offers many activities to enjoy solo or with a companion. Perhaps your mother would relish the chance to peruse the chocolate room at the Ed Ruscha retrospective at LACMA , free from the worry of children trying to lick the walls. Or maybe she’d enjoy a sound bath , waterfall hike, forest bathing session at one of L.A.’s stunning botanic gardens or a post-bedtime comedy show .

Mother’s Day is emotionally complicated for many people, including mothers. To make the day more meaningful, why not ask your mom or mother figure what their ideal Sunday looks like? To help you get started, we’ve compiled some suggestions from our guides of things to do in L.A., below.
