What to Do on a Layover in Montreal

Montreal

Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) sits around 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the downtown area, so if you find yourself there for a layover, the city is close enough to get in some exploring. Here’s our guide to how you can get the most out of your stopover in Montreal .

There are a few transport options to consider when you’re heading into the city from the airport. The most cost-effective way is via the city’s public transit system (the STM), which offers a 24/7 shuttle service with two route options. The Destination Terminus Lionel-Groulx is a single-stop shuttle that takes between 25 and 35 minutes, depending on traffic, and will drop you off at the Lionel-Groulx métro station, and the Destination Centre-ville makes 11 stops through downtown with an estimated travel time of 45 to 70 minutes. The cost is $10, which also includes unlimited transit use on the STM’s bus and métro networks for 24 consecutive hours.

Taxis can take you to downtown Montreal for a fixed fare of $38.00, as well as the more controversial option of Uber. Via Rail offers an airport shuttle when you need to travel from the Dorval rail station and YUL.

BIXI rental bikes in Montreal

1. If you have three hours...

If you’ve just got a few hours but you’re hankering to get a glimpse of Montreal , make your way to the city’s most popular neighborhood for visitors: the Old Port. This area is the most historic district of Montreal, with cobblestoned streets lined with buildings that date back into the 1700s. Even with a brief layover, a quick excursion to the Old Port is a great way to get a glimpse into Montreal’s long history and French colonial roots, unusual for North American cities.

With a taxi, the Old Port is about 20 minutes from the airport.

2. If you have five hours...

With a little more time, you could opt to head to the city center and then make your way to Mont-Royal , the big scenic park that rises above the city and offers great panoramic views. Culture Trip recommends taking the meandering walk up the mountain during the warmer months (from June to October) to get a sense of the local terrain and to mingle with locals as they jog, hike, or bike up the “mountain” that comprises Montreal ’s most popular park.

Once you reach the main belvedere at the top, you can take in the lovely view of the city’s downtown area, reaching out toward the St. Lawrence River and beyond. To expedite the trip to the top, which could take about 45 minutes on foot, you could hop onto a BIXI from the city’s bike rental system instead. The park is around 35 minutes by car from YUL.

Heading to the top of Mont-Royal is an excellent option if you want to get a bit of a workout after your long flight. If you’re there on a Sunday, you might also be able to watch the Tam-Tams , an informal, free weekly festival that gathers around the park’s George-Étienne Cartier Monument during the summer. Grab a snack from one of the wandering vendors and join drum players, vendors, dancers, and visitors as they lounge around in the grass, picnicking and relaxing.

3. If you have seven hours...

With a longer layover, you can combine an exploration of the Old Port with the Mont-Royal nature walk. If possible, take a BIXI to shorten the travel time between the two areas—or a taxi. With an extra couple of hours, you can also get a better sense of the city’s best eats afterward. From Mont-Royal, you could take the half-hour walk over to Boulevard Saint-Laurent, one of Montreal’s well-known arteries for restaurants, bars, cafés, and boutiques. Culture Trip’s top recommendation is Schwartz’s Deli , where you might have to wait in line to try one of their famed smoked-meat sandwiches. Schwartz’s has been around since 1928, and it remains one of Montreal’s most iconic foodie experiences. From Schwartz’s, take a taxi back to the airport. If the traffic’s in your favor, it should take just under half an hour.

If you have 12 hours…

If you’ve got a half day (or more) to spend in the city, you can take your Montreal experience to the next level by visiting a couple of key monuments and one of the city’s world-class museums, in addition to the recommended itinerary above. This time, while you’re in the Old Port, make a stop at the impressive Notre-Dame Basilica, originally built in 1656, which is Montreal’s oldest Catholic church. The Basilica is known for its breathtaking stained glass, intricately gilded design work, and high altar.

After exploring Mont-Royal and having lunch at Schwartz’s, you can make your way via BIXI or on foot (30 minutes) to the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal , which is one of Canada’s most famous museums. There’s also the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal , which showcases cutting-edge work by Quebec and international artists. You can access the 747 shuttle bus from either of the museums, which will give you access to the métro system so that you can board the shuttle at Berri-UQAM station.

After a full day of exploring the history, art, architecture, and nature of Montreal , you’ll have made the most out of your layover and experienced some of the best cultural sites that the city has to offer. But even a shorter layover will give you enough insight into the creative pulse of Montreal , which is sure to convince you to return for a longer trip next time.

YUL Airport Overview

Montreal Trudeau Airport Guide

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Montreal Trudeau International Airport.

What to Expect

Montreal Trudeau Airport (Code: YUL) is a busy two-level, single-terminal international airport divided into four sections: domestic, international, transborder and a public area. Amenities are pretty standard throughout YUL. It has a good range of shops and restaurants – only one is open 24 hours. There is also a good spot for plane spotting. The airport offers 60 minutes of free WiFi. Once that period expires, you can begin another session after watching an advertisement. Power outlets are apparently difficult to find – so charge your devices beforehand. For those looking for a little added comfort, there are first-class lounges that economy-class passengers can pay to access. See Airport Lounges for locations and access information.

Sleeping in Montreal Airport

Landside, the best place to sleep seems to be around the terminal’s check-in area. However, it can be bright, cold and loud here, making a blanket, an eye mask and noise cancelling headphones or earplugs definite assets. Several designated rest areas and armrest-free seating can be found Airside, in the International departures area. Unfortunately, according to one of our readers, sleeping Airside is not always allowed: “At 2 am, a security worker woke me and several other sleeping passengers in the vicinity to advise that we were not allowed to stay in the departures area. We had to depart to the arrivals area of the airport and wait for security to re-open at 3:45 am (November 2023).” Explore our guide to sleeping in Montreal Airport or read traveller airport reviews for more tips.

If you’re looking for uninterrupted sleep, there is a hotel connected to the airport and other hotels nearby, connected by shuttles. See the Airport Hotels section below for locations.

To help us keep this guide up-to-date, you can add or update information or write a review to submit airport tips and photos. You can also visit the airport’s website for current information.  For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Montreal Airport Guide.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.  For more information on Europe’s Schengen Area, click here .

Airport Hours

The airport is open 24 hours.

If sleeping in Montreal airport sounds like a nightmare, there is a hotel connected to the terminal and several nearby hotels offering free airport shuttles. Shuttle pick-up is at Door 8 on the Departures Level (2nd floor).

Montréal Airport Visitor Guide 2024: Everything you need to know

Plane at Montréal airport, Québec is click

If you’re headed to Montreal, there’s a good chance you’ll transit through Montreal Airport (YUL). Officially titled Montreal-Trudeau International Airport , this transport hub is located only 12 miles from downtown Montreal in the suburb of Dorval.

The airport was opened in 1941 and has evolved over the years to become Canada’s third busiest airport. Consisting of a single two-story terminal, Montreal Aiport sees over 20 million passengers per year across its domestic and international services. It has all the amenities you’d expect in a modern airport so you are guaranteed a comfortable experience when traveling to and from Montreal.

Montreal Airport Bag policy

As is standard procedure in airports, all bags will be required to pass through security screening before you can enter the terminal. Check weight limits with your specific airline before traveling to avoid any surprise fees at the airport. You will be restricted on the amount of liquid you take through, although it is possible to buy a drink or fill your water bottle once you have passed through screening.

If you have a lot of time to kill or want to visit the city during an extended layover, consider checking your bags into a luggage locker near Montreal Airport . It will free you up to explore without the hassle of your bags.

Montreal Airport Food policy

It is possible to bring your own food to Montreal Airport but you don’t need to! With a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars, the airport has truly covered all bases. You can grab a takeaway from a fast-food chain like Burger King or Subway, opt for something fresh and healthy at Urban Crave or Camden Food Co. , or take your pick of different cuisines from around the world. If you have the time, there are some great places to dine in and enjoy a meal or a drink.

Montreal Airport Camera policy

Cameras and related equipment are allowed in Montreal Airport although there are some limitations. Photography is not permitted in security areas, especially if you are an international traveler passing through border control. Apart from this, you are welcome to take photos within the airport as long as they are for personal use. People wishing to photograph the airport for professional purposes will need to apply for a permit before their visit and have the required paperwork on hand.

If you need a place to store some equipment while you wait for your flight or head into the city, check out Bounce luggage lockers near Montreal Airport. They will keep your camera and gear safe for however long you need.

Montreal Airport rules

The airport is open 24/7, catering to a range of domestic and international services. If you are driving to the airport, you have a number of options for parking.

Budget travelers will appreciate the Econo options. There are three parking lots located a short distance from the airport, but you will pay a smaller fee. A shuttle bus will conveniently transport you between the two sites so you won’t have to worry about a thing.

Short-term travelers can use the short-term car park located only a few minutes walk from the airport terminal. This parking is undercover so your car will remain safe from the elements.

Travelers seeking the ultimate convenience should consider valet parking. Simply pull up at the airport terminal, hand over your keys, and call them upon your return - it doesn’t get any easier!

Montreal Airport Lockers

Don’t get stuck with your bags again! There’s nothing worse than landing in a destination like Montreal and not being able to explore straight away because of your belongings, but we have a solution. Bounce bag storage near Montreal Airport allows you to leave your things in a safe, affordable location. The service is completely flexible, so you can control your itinerary rather than your bags controlling you. With Bounce, your vacation is guaranteed to be completely hassle-free.

Quebec Wonders Visiting Quebec Province Canada

Best Ways to Travel from Montreal Airport to Downtown and Old Montreal

My tips on how to commute from the Montreal airport (YUL) to Downtown Montreal and other areas of Montreal.

My tips on Getting from Montreal Airport to Downtown

Disclosure: Some posts on this site contain affiliate links. Read our full disclosure .

If you're coming to Montreal, chances are you'll be landing at YUL, Montreal's International airport. The Pierre-Elliot Trudeau (YUL) airport is the main airport in Montreal and the largest airport in the province of Quebec.

Staff at the Montreal airport are fully bilingual (I've actually come across a few that speak better English than French). All signage in the airport is also bilingual in English and French.

Here are the best ways to commute from the Montreal airport to Downtown Montreal (including the Old Montreal).

Related: Finish planning your trip with my guide on where to stay in Montreal . It includes tips on the best areas to stay in Montreal and accommodation options at different price points!

Taxi From Montreal Airport to Downtown

Only taxis with an airport pick-up license are allowed to operate at the Montreal airport. These taxis are required to offer a flat price for drop-off into a set zone of Montreal (which includes Downtown and the Old Montreal).

Why take a taxi

Taking a taxi from the Montreal airport is generally the fastest way to get to your destination. You don’t need to order a taxi in advance for pick-up at the Montreal airport. There is a constant flow of taxis coming to the pick-up point outside the terminal.

All taxis accept cash in Canadian dollars, credit cards and debit cards.

how much is a taxi from Montreal airport to Downtown?

A taxi from the Montreal airport to downtown Montreal costs $49.45 during the day (from 5AM to 11PM) and costs $56.70 during the night (11PM to 5AM).

Many Quebecers will leave a tip to their taxi drivers, in the order of 10%-15% of the cost of the ride.

Where Are taxis Waiting At the Montreal airport ?

All signage in the terminal is bilingual (French and English) and directions to the taxi queue also include a visual icon for “taxi”. It is easy enough to follow those directions. Expect a 4-7 minutes walk from the baggage carrousel.

When you take a taxi from the Montreal airport, part of the queue is outside. During the colder months (December – March), you might want to have some warm clothes within reach.

Uber in Montreal Airport

Why uber from montreal airport.

Uber is a fast and economical way to travel from YUL to Downtown Montreal. In my experience, an Uber can be up to $12 cheaper than a flat-rate taxi from the Montreal airport to the Old Montreal. It's always worth comparing.

An Uber will get you to your destination as quickly as a normal taxi would, but the wait time for an Uber varies throughout the day. In periods where there is no queue for a flat rate taxi, I personally prefer that option.

Car Rental at Montreal Airport

Renting a car in Montreal will allow you to check out every corner of town, drive to Mont-Tremblant or Quebec City , and go on day trips near Montreal .

Which car rental Companies operate at the Montreal Airport?

The following car rental companies have a rental office directly at the Montreal airport:

You can compare prices for a car rental from YUL airport here .

Private Transfer From Montreal Airport

The easiest way to get from Montreal airport to downtown is with this Private Airport Transfer . It’s a seamless experience, where you pick the vehicle and destination and the company will provide you with the driver’s info and meeting point. Once you arrive, you can also communicate with the driver via WhatsApp or text message if needed. Personally, I love the extra support and communication.

Bus From Montreal Airport to Downtown (line 747)

The cheapest way to travel from the Montreal Airport to Downtown Montreal is by bus. Montreal's airport bus line number is 747 (yes, like the Boeing plane) and it is operational 24/7. The bus stop is easy to find with signage inside the terminal guiding you accordingly.

There are two ways to pay:

  • Cash (not convenient as you need the exact amount of $11 in coins )
  • Ticket purchased in the terminal (same price of $11). The benefit of buying your 747 bus ticket at one of the four vending machines is that you can pay in cash or with a credit or debit card.

The vending machines are easy to find, with one being located close to the bus pick-up point (door 28), inside the terminal.

747 buses are equiped with luggage racks. You can find more information about this bus line here .

Final Words

Private transportation from Montreal airport and limos are also an option, but they come at a higher price point. But as I am yet to try those myself, but once I do, I will report back on my experience. In short:

  • Take a taxi if you want to keep things simple and quick. There is no need to book in advance.
  • Take Uber if you want to save money (price is variable though so make sure you compare with a flat rate when you're ready to be picked-up)
  • Take the 747 bus for less than $4 if you’re on a budget.

Related: Make sure all the Montreal landmarks are on your to-do list by checking out my one day itinerary for Montreal . Here for longer? I also have an itinerary for three days in Montreal .
