Ecotours in Cabo San Lucas: whale sharks, sea lions and more

Ecotours in Cabo San Lucas: whale sharks, sea lions and more

As you know we often have our friends in travel write up their top recommendations or how to experience something we’ve not done. Our amazing friend, Karen Bradfield at Adventures in Baja , has put together her top recommendations for responsible tours and wildlife experiences in the Los Cabos area and we’re so glad to be able to share. You know that ecotourism is something we’re very careful about and we’re thoughtful when we recommend something, so please listen to Karen’s recommendations and advice when it comes to planning your next ecotours in Cabo San Lucas .  **this article is NOT sponsored by anybody, but just is informative about what to expect and how to be respectful when you’re a guest in the ocean.

eco tours cabo san lucas

Why are Ecotours in Cabo San Lucas exceptional?

For many, touring Mexico and experiencing the unique geology and wildlife is the trip of a lifetime. Baja California offers incredible, thrilling adventures and opportunities for everybody to explore and appreciate nature, and there are several ecotours in Cabo San Lucas and nearby that are well run and ideal for families. Have you ever wanted to pet a whale calf? Maybe swim with unforgettable whale sharks or experience the antics of friendly sea lion pups staring into your eyes? Or even hiking the river valleys of Mexico and jumping into waterfalls?  These are just a few of the remarkable experiences that you can share in Baja California via ecotourism and making responsible tourist choices.

The Baja California Peninsula is 1000 miles long, skirted by pristine beaches and idyllic islands.  Infamous explorer Jacques Cousteau described the abundant seas here as the “Aquarium of the world”. It’s not only the Sea of Cortez that is filled with life but also the deserts of Baja California that are packed creatures and vegetation. You will see spectacular ever-changing landscapes: from dry cactus forests to lush river valleys.   Planning a vacation and ecotours from Baja’s tourist hub of Cabo San Lucas offers you a nature spectacular both above and below the water for you and your family.

Cabo San Lucas is located at the very end of the Baja peninsula and here the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean.  This creates a very special ecosystem where 32 species of marine mammals visit to feed throughout the year; they also come to Los Cabos give birth and breed, ranging from the impressive blue whale to tiny phytoplankton.  Between the unique landscape and the migratory populations, it’s unlike anywhere else on earth.

What to expect with Ecotours in Cabo

Before you go booking whatever tours you find online, know that not every tour operator is properly guiding guests to thoughtful, low-impact ecotours. Be wary of the company you book with and research via Trip Adviser, Google reviews, and travel blogs just what guests experienced, particularly regarding anything that may seem like a red flag to you.  But then there are incredible, passionate ecotour operators that approach wildlife tourism with respect and safety. They have and share knowledge, they educate their guests and conservation is at the forefront of their ecotours in Cabo San Lucas and beyond.

Responsible Wildlife Ecotours in Cabo

You see people online visiting Los Cabos and making the trek north to see baby whales in quiet lagoons. The whales are the tip of the iceberg however. The diversity of marine life includes whales, whale sharks, dolphins, sea lions, 900 types of fish and massive schools of leaping manta rays .  Whether you have a long weekend or several weeks, there are Cabo wildlife experiences that will fit with your available time. Or if you are looking for unique and incredible adventures that will make your children squeal with excitement and take home memories that will stay in their dreams forever.

Tip :  we like to travel with our own snorkel / scuba masks . It makes ecotours, both high end and economy style tours, easier for us since we are used to our own equipment. Just a thought…

Swimming with Whale Sharks out of Los Cabos

So where do we start?  How about the formidable largest (friendliest) shark in the world?  In the Sea of Cortez close to La Paz there is a population of Whale Sharks . Ok, yes they are sharks, but they don’t have teeth and they are filter feeders and eat mainly plankton.  Affectionately known as gentle giants the adults can grow to an enormous 40 foot and can weigh up to 20 tons.  They scoop plankton from the surface of the ocean while swimming or can be seen vertical feeding where they can filter literally thousands of liters of water daily.  Snorkeling with whale sharks for many is a bucket list dream and it’s possible to take your family, including young children, to enjoy this awesome adventure.  Non swimmers also have an amazing view from the boat as the whale sharks are so close to the surface.

Whale Shark in La Paz Baja California Mexico Adventures in Baja 2

In 2017 the Mexican office of the environment,  SEMARNAT ,  stood up to protect the whale sharks in La Paz, based on great research from NGOs’ such as Pelagios Kakunja and the Whale Shark Project. They introduced specific guidelines and training for guides and captains. This is a huge step in protecting this endangered species and towards sustainable eco-tourism.  If this is a bucket list experience for you or your family, do it, but be sure that you’ve researched and that you’re going with trained ecotour operators.

Just imagine your children going home to tell their friends that they swam with a 30 foot shark!

Tour Booking :  top recommendation for a Whale Shark encounter is Adventures in Baja (Karen wrote this article). If AIB is unable to confirm your booking or directly refer you to their preferred partners, tours with an EFR certified guide may be booked here (La Paz)  or here for a Cabo San Lucas departure .

Whale Encounters in Cabo

Then there are whales… We proudly say that the whales are “made in Mexico” as the visiting whales migrate thousands of miles to make their home here from December to April every year. The humpback whales are well known for their impressive aerial displays, breaching, tail slapping and singing to attract a mate or simply for fun.

When it comes to picking ecotours in Cabo, many operators run marine biologist-led whale watching tours daily from Cabo San Lucas. With an expert on board you can learn about the behaviors and watch the magnificent displays, an experience that your children may never forget.  In 1933 Mexico declared its waters a sanctuary for whales and since then the numbers of visiting whales have increased dramatically. They also introduced rules for whale watching activities so it’s important that you choose your operator carefully to ensure they respect the recommended distances.

Grey Whale in Magdelena Bay Baja California Sur Mexico Adventures in Baja 1

Of course watching the giants of the sea is a mind blowing experience in itself, but in Baja, guests have the opportunity to reach out a  hand and pet one . This is a completely different encounter than you might expect, particularly considering that we’re talking about ecotours in Cabo and being responsible on all fronts.  The Grey whales in the Baja Lagoons actively seek human attention and frequently come to the boats with their calves, often even close enough for a kiss or a pet.

If you are asking about the ethics of petting a whale, well, they really enjoy it, if you don’t pet them they’ll swim off and find another boat of tourists that will.  I have even seen these ENGAGING whales open their mouths for a tongue tickle. You could almost think that whale mothers treat us as if we were offering a crèche service, leaving the calf to play while they sneak off for a rest.  #whalebabysitting 🙂

Grey Whale in Magdelena Bay Baja California Sur Mexico Adventures in Baja 2

How these incredible mammals could ever forgive humans for hunting them almost to extinction is quite unbelievable, but now the lagoons are protected whale sanctuaries and listed under UNESCO .  During the whale watching season the local captains work with the tourists instead of fishing; they love the whales too. The small towns beside the lagoons celebrate the whales with annual festivals and run school programs to educate the local children including boat excursions with the whales, building a future towards sustainability in ecotourism.

Still need some inspiration for finding ecotours in Cabo to visit the whales? Check out a video of our most recent encounter with the grey whales.  note: humpbacks frequent the area too but do not demonstrate the same behaviors as grey whales in the Sea of Cortez do.

Tour booking :  Adventures in Baja runs dedicated tours, 2-day excursions  or custom trips, to see and meet the grey whales. Go with a respectful pro when you’re considering your options for ecotours in Cabo.

Sea Lion Encounters in Los Cabos

Have you ever jumped into the water with a colony of sea lions?  Well if you’re from San Francisco or have been to visit Pier 39 it’s possible that maybe the last thing on your mind, however on the Island of Espiritu Santo there is a large colony of friendly and playful Californian Sea Lions.  These Sea lions have shared their colony with snorkelers for many years and the pups enjoy showing off their swimming skills to us and find our fins good for teething pain.

Note : Rob here, I’ve snorkeled with the sea lions at Cabo Pulmo just north of San Jose del Cabo and can attest, it’s amazing!!!

Sea Lion pup at Isla Espiritu Santo Baja California Sur Mexico Adventures in Baja 1

The uninhabited Island of Espiritu Santo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Park. it was formed by tectonic plate activity and volcanic deposition over millions of years: it’s truly beautiful and a geologists dream.  It’s fringed with deserted white sandy beaches, coral reefs, with colonies of blue footed boobies and frigate birds and the of course the adorable sea lions. It’s a fascinating day trip deep in nature. Check out this video ! You can see how inquisitive the pups are.

Tour booking :  preferred ecotours in Cabo and the Southern Baja is always Adventures in Baja . For information on their Espiritu Santo tours, check it out here. If they cannot book your tour for any reason, here’s a backup plan .

Free-diving Ecotours in Cabo San Lucas and Beyond

A very special experience you can also find in Cabo San Lucas and the waters of Los Cabos is guided free diving. What is free diving? Well, you’ve heard of SCUBA diving, no doubt, which involves certification and diving with air tanks. Free diving is a method of deep diving without tanks for as long as you can safely hold your own breath. This might not sound doable, but it’s actually amazing. Once you’ve had a few attempts at teaching yourself to remain calm and to regulate the pressure in your ears underwater, the world completely opens up to you.

Rob Taylor Free Diving with Pelagic Safari Cabo San Lucas Adventures in Baja 4

SCUBA Crews to trust : if you’re unfamiliar with Girls T hat Scuba , it’s an incredible group of women dedicated to sharing the sport of scuba diving with ladies from around the world. They also do free diving events. And Dive Ninjas : we cannot forget the really amazing people working with Dive Ninjas out of Cabo, educating visitors and leading them on one-of-a-kind expeditions all around the Baja.

Dive Ninjas mobula free diving Cabo San Lucas Mexico 1

Of the many incredible ecotours in Cabo San Lucas, a top recommendation is a day on the water with the Pelagic Safari . Led by a top notch diver and marine activist, Regina Domingo, and a team of naturalists and captains, the Pelagic Fleet is amazing to go exploring with. Known for leading guests to safe, unforgettable shark free diving expeditions, they blend education and once-in-a-lifetime encounters with wildlife.

I (Rob again) had the most remarkable day on the water with the Pelagic team as we swam with sea lions and mobula rays , watched giant mantas and marlins jump out of the water, and chummed (responsibly) for sharks. My particular trip didn’t have any sharks present, but the expeditions on the days prior had great luck. I’d go again in a heartbeat. Free diving with wildlife is spectacular and otherworldly.

Hiking around Los Cabos

While it’s hard to leave the stunning ocean and coastline, a hiking tour to the Sierra de la Laguna biosphere reserve is a must while you are in the Baja, and truly this is one of the most unique ecotours in Cabo. The Sierra de la Laguna has its own microclimate so is cooler and full of plants and wildlife unique to the area.  The peace and tranquility is astounding.  Here there are rivers and temperate forests, and many great hiking trails of all levels.  Plus there are some fantastic ranchers who love to share their life stories with the children and their love for this special place.

Hiking Sierra de la Laguna Adventures in Baja 3

Not many consider hiking in the mountains of Baja as a feasible tour plan when they’re planning their vacation to Cabo San Lucas, so getting to do an ecotour like this is really special.

Note : if you’ve not done a guided hike before, they are a favorite of 2TravelDads. We have done them in the Canadian Rockies and the Oregon High D e sert and can attest that experiencing nature with a passionate, certified guide is an exceptional experience and when it comes to the Baja, this is one of the best ecotours in Cabo.

Hiking Sierra de la Laguna Adventures in Baja 4

So if you have ever imagined reaching out to nature, petting whales, swimming with the largest fish in the ocean, or hiking with local ranchers through incredible cactus forests you need to plan a visit to Baja California where an unexpected world of adventure awaits you. It is easy to be based out of Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, or even La Paz. Ecotours are available out of each home base city and you won’t be disappointed.

Tips for being a responsible tourist in nature

It can be easy to grab whatever is convenient while you’re traveling when it comes to daily supplies. Think about the planet though, particularly when heading out into nature. Please, always use biodegradable sunscreen that is marked as “reef safe.” You’ll need sun protection in the Mexican heat, and if you’re using sunscreen that may wash off as you’re snorkeling in Cabo, you need to be responsible about leaving no trace and not impacting the nature underwater.

Also, a reusable water bottle is a must. Water and staying hydrated is very important for the safety of you and your family. Bring your own reusable water bottle everywhere you so, and please ask for “vasos of aqua” at the table for dinner not plastic bottles.

In Cabo San Lucas and nearly everywhere in the tourist areas of Mexico, there is clean, tanked water for drinking. Many restaurants have water service that’s considered sustainable, so drinking bottled water continually is very unnecessary. Don’t contribute to the plastic bottle issue plaguing the oceans. Every little step helps.

I hope this has you inspired to check out the many awesome ecotours in Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. Until you’ve experienced life under the water you don’t fully grasp your own place in this world. Enjoy the wildlife

Sustainability & Ecotourism in Los Cabos: A Full Guide [2024]

By: Author Stefania Guglielmi

Posted on Last updated: March 1, 2024

Categories Mexico , North America , Responsible travel

Planning a trip to Baja California Sur and wondering what to do when it comes to ecotourism in Los Cabos? Los Cabos is an amazing sustainable destination, and you’ll discover all about it in this guide.

Los Cabos is a gorgeous area in the southern tip of Baja California Sur, and it comprises Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo , two beautiful resort cities.

The area boasts pristine beaches, a laid-back nightlife, and it offers plenty of activities for nature lovers , as well as those who care deeply about booking sustainable activities and being responsible tourists (like you and me!).

When Los Cabos Tourism invited me to explore the sustainable side of Los Cabos, I had to say yes! Los Cabos is, in fact, one of the leading ecotourism destinations in Mexico , and its sustainability efforts, combined with the glorious natural attractions it possesses, make it an unrivaled spot for a vacation.

A woman sailing in Los Cabos, admiring the rock formations and other boats on the sea. Inserted in a post about ecotourism in Los Cabos

I’ve spent a lot of time in Mexico over the last few years, but somehow I had never made it to Baja California Sur or Los Cabos – what a mistake!

Check out this full guide about sustainability & ecotourism in Los Cabos so you can make the best of your time there.

⚠️ Please never book activities that involve captive animals , such as riding camels or swimming with dolphins. Horseback riding is usually ok, but do your research and make sure the tour you book with is a responsible one that takes care of the animals.

ECOTOURISM ACTIVITIES IN LOS CABOS

When it comes to sustainable travel in Los Cabos, there’s no shortage of activities to be enjoyed . Below you’ll find some of the very best ones, offered by responsible providers.

Adopt and Release a Baby Turtle

Adopting and releasing baby turtles is possibly one of the most enjoyable (and satisfying!) things to do in San Jose del Cabo . We were lucky enough to be in Los Cabos in the right season for this activity, and it was one of the highlights of our trip.

The turtle hatching season in Los Cabos goes from late July till November, so keep this in mind if this is an activity you want to include in your itinerary.

A guide standing in front of a turtle sign at the beach, teaching about turtle release experiences in Los Cabos

When you book a turtle release tour with CalypsoTrip , you’ll be taking part in a wildlife conservation program, helping preserve the species and learning about it in the process.

An expert will enlighten you on their behavior and lifespan, their natural habitat, and the importance of protecting them, as endangered sea turtles are sadly more common than we think .

The most exciting part is arguably when the hatchlings are released from their nests and make their way to the ocean , ready to start their life in the water. Witness the magic of the natural world while being actively involved in the protection of the species.

You can also book this same activity through Viator, which offers a full refund if you need to cancel the tour for any reason, and you do so up to 24 hours in advance.

➤ The Turtle Release Eco-Experience includes a guided commentary about the turtles’ biology and their environment as you release them, and hotel pick-up and drop-off. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

➤ You can otherwise book this Los Cabos Turtle Release Conservation Program . You’ll have the chance to adopt a baby turtle, and learn about the species and how endangered they are as you help release them into the ocean. You’ll also visit a donkey sanctuary! ➥ BOOK IT HERE

A Farm-to-Table Cooking Class

Mexico is world-renowned for its cuisine , and learning the secrets behind the country’s tastiest traditional dishes is the ultimate way to enjoy them. When in Los Cabos, though, the experience is enhanced by its focus on sustainability and in providing a farm-to-table culinary journey.

A woman posing in front of Los Tamarindos sign in Los Cabos

Tamarindos is an organic farm barely 15 minutes from San Jose del Cabo, where you’ll get to harvest your own herbs and vegetables before immersing yourself in a hands-on cooking lesson.

You’ll learn to prepare a 4-course traditional meal following the instructions of a local chef while learning all about Mexican and Mediterranean cuisines (plus getting new recipes to take home with you!)

Groups are limited to 6 people, so the experience is very personalized, and you can even decide what dishes you’d like to learn and prepare, relishing in them once they’re ready.

A woman smiling as she grinds ingredients in a mortar and pestle during a cooking class in Los Cabos

It’s one of the most rewarding activities to enjoy in the area, and it perfectly aligns with the concept of sustainable travel in Cabo. We loved our cooking class and meeting other travelers!

➤ The Farm-to-Table Experience includes the cooking class and lunch (drinks are paid separately). ➥ BOOK IT HERE

➤ An alternative is the Azteca Cactus Taco – Farm to Table Cooking Class in Los Cabos . Discover the roots of Mexican cuisine in a rancho, where you’ll tour a local farm, feed the animals, and harvest nopales (a prickly pear cactus that stars some Mexican specialties). Then, it’s time for your hands-on cooking class!

As you prepare tasty dishes, learn about the traditional ingredients and local culinary customs. Cap off the class by savoring tortillas, salsas, and Nopales a la Mexicana . ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Blue Flag Beaches of Los Cabos

Los Cabos is where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, and it’s an area mainly recognized for its stunning beaches. Rightly so, as they are indeed spectacular, and 25 of them even boast a blue flag certification .

The blue flag certification is an internationally recognized award that guarantees beaches have met (and continue to do so) strict criteria on sustainability, safety, environmental impact, and accessibility .

It assures travelers that the beach is clean and safe , and also that it has a good emergency plan, a good number of lifeguards, its management is respectful to the ecosystem and wildlife, and basically, that it’s an eco-friendly facility.

There are over 20 stunning beaches which boast the blue flag recognition, including Acapulquito , Las Viudas , Palmilla , Lover’s Beach , and La Gaviota .

▶ One of my favorites, though, is Chileno Beach , located in Cabo San Lucas. It features a long stretch of white sand and turquoise waters, which are perfectly swimmable, and has a very laid-back vibe.

A surfer walking out of the water in a beach in Los Cabos

Snorkeling is one of the main activities at Playa Chileno , as is spending the day sunbathing by the shore or going for a swim. There are toilets and showers on-site, but you won’t find beach clubs or restaurants, which helps maintain the relaxed atmosphere of the beach.

This is where we went snorkeling and oh my gosh! I definitely was not expecting to see so much fish!

▶ Santa Maria Beach is another unmissable beach situated 7 miles north of Cabo San Lucas, in the gorgeous Santa Maria Bay. Calm waters are fringed by powdery white sand and massive rock formations to the sides, creating a dramatic backdrop that has become one of its main attractions.

A golden-sand beach with blue waters, and a rock formation in the background

This blue flag beach is sort of secluded, and an astounding spot for snorkeling (among the very best in Los Cabos, actually), as it’s home to schools of colorful reef fish and insanely clear waters . There are several boats ready to take you on a snorkeling trip during the day.

Umbrellas and beach chairs can usually be rented at the entrance, although the service is offered by a vendor and not a beach facility per se. It’d be wise to take your own if you plan to spend the whole day at the beach.

A woman kayaking in Los Cabos

One of the best ways to enjoy these protected and oh-so-gorgeous locations is by getting in the water. In my opinion, kayaking and snorkeling in Cabo is a must, and you can do so with a comprehensive tour that includes the activities and equipment like we did with High Tide Los Cabos .

You can paddle from one beach to the other on a glass-bottom kayak and then snorkel in beautiful tidal pools among fish, urchins, and maybe even turtles and starfish. You can book your tour directly on their website or on Viator.

➤ The Snorkeling Tour to Chileno and Santa Maria includes swimming stops at coral formations, as well as round-trip transportation and free time at the beach. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

➤ This Kayak and Snorkel Tour is a private experience. You’ll explore both bays on a glass-bottom kayak, and snorkel in prime locations with your own group. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Go on a Sustainable City Tour

To discover the gorgeous area through a local’s eyes, truly understand it, and learn about its hidden gems and very best spots, there’s not better way to do it than by joining a city tour .

It’s one of the ultimate activities in Los Cabos, and you’ll help support local communities while immersing yourself in the history and stories of San Jose del Cabo.

A guide pointing at a map during a city tour in Los Cabos

The city tour by Cabo City Tours that we suggest aims to keep the local identity alive through education, offering free field trips to public schools and NGOs , and introducing the values of the community and its traditions to new residents.

This project is funded by visitors like you who book this incredibly interesting and sustainable tour when in Los Cabos.

The city tour is based in the art of storytelling, and as you make your way around San Jose del Cabo, your knowledgeable guide will tell you the stories of the region’s tribes, battles, and pirates .

We are not particularly into history, but this was not the usual boring, historical tour – our guide was fun, and we loved learning so much about the area! You’ll also learn about the legends that have lived on for centuries, as well as statistics and interesting facts about the city.

Plus, you get to walk all around San Jose del Cabo , which is a very cute, super colorful town! When visiting Los Cabos, I highly recommend taking part in this tour.

➤ This Cultural Walking Tour takes place in the evening, and lasts close to 2 hours. It operates on a small-group basis and enables you to explore the city center in depth. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Day Trip To Cabo Pulmo

Cabo Pulmo National Park is situated 60 miles north of Los Cabos, which makes it an unmissable day trip destination. This is the ideal trip for those interested in ecotourism in Cabo!

An image of Cabo Pulmo National Park, with the beach in the background

The park stretches for about 5 miles on the coastline, backdropped by glorious mountains and surrounded by desert.

It features the only hard coral reef in North America , home to over 800 sea creatures and estimated to be over 20 thousand years old! The turquoise waters of its beaches are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, and you can also enjoy fantastic scuba diving in Cabo Pulmo .

The total of the park’s protected area is banned from fishing , and since its establishment, the abundant marine life that had been driven away from the coral reefs have gradually come back.

A woman standing next to a jeep, and looking at the bay in Cabo Pulmo Park

In fact, Cabo Pulmo’s coral reef was on the verge of dying due to overfishing and pollution, and several conservation programs managed to rescue it and bring it back to life. Today it boasts striking natural beauty and has benefitted marine animals greatly.

Sea turtles, rays, sharks, fish, invertebrates, and humpback whales are among the creatures that call Cabo Pulmo National Park their home. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it’s also recognized by the Ramsar Convention .

While swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving are by far the best and most popular activities in Los Cabos’ marine park, there’s plenty more for you to do while you’re there.

Paddleboarding , sea kayak, sailing , hiking , and indulging in the local cuisine are some of the things you can enjoy on your day trip to the national park.

A woman standing next to a jeep, with a large cactus and other vegetation in the background. Inserted in a post about eco tourism in Los Cabos

➤ One of the best ways to visit Cabo Pulmo is on a jeep tour like the one we went on with High Tide Los Cabos. The 4×4 vehicle will allow you to get there via the most scenic road, with stunning views of Sea of Cortez along the way.

You’ll also be able to explore the off-road, mountainous trails without worrying about the driving.

A visit to Playa Arbolitos is included, where you’ll enjoy snacks before getting in the water for some snorkeling along the reef and among plenty of sea life .

This Private Jeep Tour is a 7-hour trip and includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, as well as lunch, use of equipment, refreshments, and entrance fees. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Whale Watching in Los Cabos

December through April is the migration period for gray and humpback whales . Thousands of these spectacular creatures make their way south from the Arctic to the warmer waters of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, where they’re going to mate and give birth .

A whale's tail in the sea, with mountains in the background, inserted in a post about eco tourism in Los Cabos

It’s therefore a great time to enjoy (responsible!) whale watching, getting a close-up look of the giant mammals and watching them interact.

Unfortunately, I was in Cabo at a different time and was not able to witness it this time like I did last year in Puerto Vallarta but oh well – one more reason to come back!

During the whale season, chances of seeing the animals are high (it’s not always 100%, but very very close), and you may even get a glimpse of them from the beach. To really get close to them, learn about their behavior, and snap stunning pictures, though, you’ll need to take a tour .

There are many tours in the area that offer whale watching experiences – remember to choose a responsible operator that matches your sustainable travel in Los Cabos.

Most tours are accompanied by an expert guide or biologist who’ll be able to answer all of your questions, and explain the whales’ migration patterns, eating habits, and life cycle as you admire them in their natural habitat.

➤ The Zodiac Whale Watching Adventure is led by a marine biologist and operated by a sustainable company. You’ll enjoy a free second tour if you don’t see the whales! ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Animalon by the Sea Dinner Cruise

This activity is NOT available anymore.

Animalon by the Sea is a 3-hour sunset dinner cruise designed by an acclaimed Mexican chef, Javier Plascencia.

The journey takes place on a beautiful 49’’ boat that will sail across the sea of Cortez as you indulge in a delicious 5-course meal, fully made with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.

A woman dining aboard a yacht during a dinner boat tour in Los Cabos, with rock formations in the background

The activity places great emphasis in offering an ocean-to-table experience , which makes it unique and very sustainable.

If you go for the full experience, the menu is carefully paired with the perfect wine for each dish .

During the cruise, you might get to see dolphins , sea lions , and even whales swimming alongside the boat on the seas of Baja California Sur.

As the day comes to an end, you’ll be able to witness the peninsula and the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas bathed in the golden sunset light. The boat lights up after dusk, conveying an enchanting atmosphere.

A close up image of a meal during a dinner cruise in Los Cabos

I loved the whole experience! It was probably my favorite activity in Los Cabos. The food was very good, and I was so surprised to see such beautiful creations come from the tiny boat kitchen.

But what makes this cruise so special is that you get the fine dining experience of a restaurant combined with some incredible sunset views that you can only get on a boat.

FARM-TO-TABLE RESTAURANTS IN LOS CABOS

Eating is a very ( extremely ) important part of any vacation…even more if said vacation is in Mexico!

Sustainable tourism in Los Cabos is taken very seriously, as you probably realized by now. That means that you’ll be able to find farm-to-table, sustainable restaurants where you can indulge in Mexican delicacies, being offered great quality without having a negative impact on the environment.

Below you’ll find two fantastic restaurants that guarantee impeccable service and food and a deep commitment to sustainability.

Flora’s Field Kitchen at Flora Farms

Flora’s Field Kitchen is located in Flora Farms, a sustainable estate that works the land by hand and where over 100 different herbs and vegetables are grown .

The lush outdoor dining area at Las Flores in Los Cabos

All items on the menu are handmade using the freshest ingredients , all of which come directly from the farm. This is where their field-to-table concept originates , creating a circle that starts with nourishing the soil and plating the seeds, and culminates in the wholesome dishes you’ll get to enjoy.

In fact, the restaurant aims to only serve what they grow and produce , which means their menu is seasonal. You’ll find vegetarian dishes as well as meat options, which come from animals raised humanly and with a healthy diet in the ranch.

There’s also a bar with views of the field that serves all the classic cocktails as well as fruit and vegetable-based ones, wine, and tap beer from Flora’s Brewery.

If you’re in the mood for pizzas, Mama’s Pizzeria , a section within Flora’s Field Kitchen, has its own wood-fired oven where 15 different types of pizza are baked . And it was good pizza! Trust me – I’m Italian after all 😉

A round pizza in a white plate at Flora Farms in LOs Cabos

We tried multiple dishes from the menu and liked each and every one of them. Everything tasted fresh, which makes sense considering the ingredients come from their own farm.

For drinks, I had both the Perro Perdido with sparkling wine and a Lavender Martini, and they were both so good.

House-made ice creams and sorbets for dessert can be bought at the ice cream cart on-site.

This restaurant is extremely popular, so you’d better book in advance if you want to eat here!

Opening Hours : Tuesday to Saturday from 9 AM to 10.30 AM, 11 AM to 1.30 PM, and 5.30 PM to 9 PM. Sunday brunch runs from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Don Sanchez

Don Sanchez is a restaurant located in San Jose del Cabo that specializes in contemporary Mexican cuisine.

Close up of a gourmet meal at Don Sanchez in Los Cabos

All of the fruits and vegetables used in their kitchen are organic and locally produced ; seafood is regionally sourced and animals are also raised in Los Cabos. This way they ensure prime quality as well as a responsible treatment to the environment.

The restaurant is known for its excellent service and flavorful cuisine , and it offers a great wine menu to pair with your dishes, as well as the popular spirits of the region, including tequila and mezcal. They even have their own wine private label!

READ ALSO : Tequila Tasting in Cabo San Lucas

After starting with two unusually looking mezcal cocktails, we left the chef take over and prepare a tasting menu for us and it was a great choice. We loved every dish! In fact, this was one of the very best meals we had this year.

The entrance to Don Sanchez restaurant in Los Cabos

Their philosophy, which states that the creation of the best meals starts with the best ingredients, has led them to carefully choose where their produce comes from and implement the fabulous farm-to-table concept.

The menu includes raw seafood and tasty tacos, as well as meat-based main dishes and healthy salads and appetizers. There are quite a few options for vegetarians . In fact, we aren’t vegetarians, but we loved the plant-based dishes we were offered.

Opening Hours : Daily from 5 PM to 10 PM

WHERE TO STAY: AN ECO HOTEL IN LOS CABOS

We stayed at Hotel El Ganzo , considered one of the most sustainable accommodations in all of Mexico. In fact, it’s the first hotel in the country to be certified as a B Corporation , meaning that they meet the highest standards when it comes to environmental and social responsibility.

A woman in a black polka dress and hat, walking out of Hotel El Ganzo building

This eco-friendly hotel features luxurious one and two-bedroom rooms , some of which face the ocean, and a penthouse & honeymoon suite.

Our room was very spacious and featured a seating area, a very comfy bed, and a fully stocked complimentary minibar.

The highlight was probably the expansive terrace with a private jacuzzi overlooking the marina – nothing better than enjoying the view in the jacuzzi while sipping a glass of wine!

A woman relaxing in an outdoor bubble bath with a glass of wine in hand

The bathroom was fully equipped, including a shower and soaking bath, organic toiletries, and robes.

There are also several dining options at El Ganzo , from an on-site restaurant to a rooftop bar to a taco food truck.

A bowl of oatmeal with fruit on top, a plate of fruit, and a green smoothie on a breakfast table in Hotel El Ganzo

At El Ganzo you’ll find a private beach club reachable by a 1-minute boat ride, two swimming pools, and a fitness center. Pets are welcome as well!

Its main rooftop pool is an infinity pool with incredible views over the San Jose del Cabo Marina, and a transparent jacuzzi in the middle of it. This must be the most Instagrammable pool in all of Los Cabos !

Besides luxurious rooms and suites, El Ganzo boasts a wellness & spa center where you can get anything from facials to massages, hydrotherapy, beauty treatments or yoga classes.

El Ganzo’s commitment to sustainability, though, is likely its main attraction if you’re reading this article. The hotel has in place an Environmental Management System that helps it monitor and reduce its waste .

The rooftop pool is heated with solar power, food waste is composted, single-use plastics have been eliminated, and guests’ carbon footprint impact is reversed by the purchase of carbon bonds.

A woman standing in front of a wall with black and white street art

El Ganzo also has a strong engagement with the community . It supports local businesses, provides a space for creativity and socialization at its Community Center, hires locally, and educates its staff during work hours.

The hotel also seeks partnerships with sustainable companies, like Water Matters, and encourages its guests to take part in the programs and support the eco-friendly projects it carries out.

20 Exciting Things To Do in Cabo San Lucas

T ravelers from around the world are drawn to the aquamarine waters and pleasant year-round temperatures of Cabo San Lucas. Unfortunately, it sometimes gets a bad rap because of it’s party reputation. And yes, it might be a bit more touristy than some other beach destinations like Puerto Vallarta or La Paz , but don’t count it out.

Cabo’s unique location surrounded by water, on the Baja Peninsula, makes it one of the best places to visit in Mexico. I’ve been traveling south of the border since I was 15 and fell in love with Cabo a long time ago. So, if you’re headed to Cabo then bookmark this list of the best things to do in Cabo San Lucas. It’s ideal for first timers, repeat visitors and even someone who’s only in town for a day on a cruise.

This post contains affiliate links. That means I may earn a commission, at no cost to you, if you book or buy something from a link I provide. This keeps Southerner Says online and on the road. Thank you for your support .

Things to do in Cabo San Lucas

1. visit land’s end.

One of the most recognizable places in North America is Land’s End and Cabo’s iconic Arch, or el Arco. You can see the Arch from most of the beaches and many of the hotels in Cabo but getting up close on a boat tour is definitely best.

Whether you prefer an organized tour on a catamaran or a smaller panga (boat) with one of the many guides offering tours on Medano Beach, getting to the Arch is just a short ride across the Sea of Cortez. This should be at the top of your best things to do in Cabo San Lucas list.

A boat tour to the Arch will take you along the stunning coastline of Land’s End and provide awesome views of the rugged cliffs and crystal-clear waters. Along the way, you might spot sea lions lounging on the rocks at the Reserva de Lobos Marinos and possibly even see whales breaching in the distance.

Want to see the Arch in a different way? Then book a kayak tour to the Arch or a glass-bottomed boat .

2. Stroll Lover’s Beach

The tip of the Baja Peninsula forms two of the most gorgeous beaches in Cabo San Lucas – Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach. Because of Baja’s shape, Lover’s Beach, or Playa del Amor, faces the mainland of Cabo so it’s somewhat protected and calmer.

Divorce Beach, on the south side of the peninsula, faces the open waters of the Pacific with rougher surf and bigger waves. In fact, it it’s not already obvious, the two names come from the differences in the two beaches.

You can access both beaches on a boat tour and most of the Arch tours drop passengers off for a chance to explore Lover’s Beach. From there you can easily walk over to Divorce Beach. Just remember that swimming is not recommended on Divorce Beach because of the rough water and currents.

There are no vendors or facilities of any kind on the beach so if you want drinks or snacks or a towel to sit on, then bring it along. A drybag to keep your phone from getting wet or a backpack for your stuff also isn’t a bad idea. I like these towels or now you have a reason to purchase something local.

3. Go Deep Sea Fishing

I could list plenty of reasons why I’m not a huge fan of deep sea fishing but the main one is because it usually means getting up before the sun to get to your fishing spot. Not my idea of fun on a vacation.

However, turns out that deep sea fishing in the Pacific Ocean is one of the most amazing things to do in Cabo San Lucas. Even though it’s deep sea fishing, the tour we were on only went a few miles out so there was always land in sight and that was very reassuring.

Of course, the best part of the experience is the catch if you’re lucky. On our last trip, we not only reeled in mahi mahi but also a marlin. Cabo is known for sportfishing so you are almost guaranteed to catch something. And if you are lucky, you might just spot other sea life like turtles and whales.

4. Meet Pancho the Sea Lion

As you return to the marina from deep sea fishing, tell your captain you’d like to meet Pancho the sea lion. Pancho has become quite a celebrity in Cabo San Lucas.

He likes to greet the boats as they return with their catches because he knows they are good for a quick easy meal. Pancho jumps on the back of the boat for his handout. I suspect there is more than one Pancho but it’s still a fun thing to do in Cabo San Lucas.

5. Try Paddleboarding

Stand up paddle, or SUP, is a popular activity in Cabo San Lucas. With its (usually) calm, clear waters and stunning coastal scenery, Cabo is the perfect place to enjoy this fun water sport. SUP enthusiasts can paddle along the shoreline, admire the rock formations and interesting marine life.

If you’re a first-timer, the calm waters at Medano Beach are the ideal place to learn. Plus, it’s super convenient to rent a board from your hotel or a tour operator on the beach. Many of the resorts have protected, roped-off areas so you’ll feel comfortable and safely tucked away from boats and jet-skis.

Generally, rentals are available by the day or by the hour. However, if it’s your first time, I suggest starting with an hour to see how you like it. You can always extend your time or try again on another day.

6. Check Out San Jose de Cabo

For as much as Cabo San Lucas has a party vibe, its sister city, San Jose de Cabo, is the complete opposite. Quieter, more laid back and totally chill, it’s a different, welcome experience from the much livelier Cabo San Lucas.

Just a short drive, or bus ride over, San Jose del Cabo is about an hour away from Cabo San Lucas and 20 minutes from San Jose del Cabo Airport (SJD). You actually drive through when you arrive by airplane.

Get a taste of authentic Mexico culture in the colorful historic center and attend the weekly art walk focusing on local artists and vendors. Or check out some of the beachside hangouts or the marina for the day.

7. Set Sail on a Sunset Cruise

Some of the most incredible sunsets I’ve ever seen in my life have been in Baja. Experiencing a sunset on a boat makes a vacation in Cabo that more memorable a way to experience the end of the day. There are several tour companies that offer sunset cruises but Cabo Blue’s catamaran sail tour is one of a kind.

Instead of a bigger party type boat, the vibe on the catamaran is is more peaceful. Just a bunch of people drinking beer and watching the sunset. Many of the tour companies serve dinner but the Cabo Blue tour we chose was strictly appetizers that included ceviche and other snacks, served along icy cold Pacificos. It was the perfect way to end the day.

If you can only swing one tour in Cabo San Lucas then I recommend booking a sunset sail like this romantic one or this luxury yacht and chef dinner cruise . Sunset on the water is truly an unforgettable experience and one I would do again and again.

8. Get Off-Road

For a bit of off road excitement on your Cabo vacation, get the adrenaline flowing is with an ATV trip to the desert. The tours guide you through the surrounding desert landscapes and you’ll get a chance to see some of the rural parts of the city. Plus, terrific ocean views.

Most tour agencies offer half-day and full-day excursions with varying levels of difficulty and terrain. Some include a beach stop so you can cool off in the surf. Remember to check the reviews and policies on things like helmet use and insurance coverage. Dress appropriately for the activity and wear closed-toe shoes.

Julio, a local from Chilango Store Tours , took us swimming with whale sharks on our very first trip to Baja Sur, offers any kind of tours you could want in Cabo as well as in La Paz.

9. Relax at a Beach Club

If you came to Mexico to relax, there’s no better way to do that than by spending a day lounging by the ocean and having someone else serve the drinks. Medano Beach has several beach clubs where the only thing you have to do all day is pick out your chair and let someone else do the rest.

One of the more popular one is Mango Deck . Just know that some of their entertainment and events can be a bit bawdy. If that’s not your thing they do have some quieter areas and actually have a pretty good breakfast buffet.

Depending if you are visiting in high or low season, most beach clubs will give you a lounge chair for free as long as you eat and drink there. Understandably, they want to make sure it’s worth their while for you to take up space in their club, so there’s usually a minimum of two drinks, as well.

10. Experience Whale-Watching

Cabo San Lucas is known for the whale watching. During the winter months, primarily December to March, humpbacks, gray whales and other species, migrate to the warm waters surrounding the Baja Peninsula. During that time of the year it’s not unusual to see whales right from the shore but for the best views, book a whale watching tour.

Tours include knowledgeable guides who know where to go and will help you spot the whales, plus give information about their behavior and habitat. Tour operators provide everything you need to enhance the experience and some tours include food and drinks.

When looking for a tour, it’s important to choose a reputable and responsible operator that follows local regulations to minimize disturbance to the whales and their environment.

11. Chill at a Brewery

I usually reach for a Pacifico when I’m in Baja, or Mexico in general, but for those who have a more sophisticated taste, Cabo has a thriving craft beer scene, with a handful of local breweries serving delicious brews.

With its warm and sunny climate, Baja is ideal for growing hops and other fresh ingredients needed for beer making. And even though it’s the desert, there’s plenty of access to fresh water, which is essential for high-quality beer.

Baja Brewing Company is one of the most well known breweries in Cabo San Lucas, and offers a range of craft beers. Not to mention they provide some of the best views from the rooftop of their restaurant located in Cabo Villas on right on Medano Beach. Land’s End Brewing Company – love the name – and Yenekamu Brewing Co. are a couple of other breweries to try.

12. Play Golf

You might be surprised to find out that Cabo San Lucas is a golfer’s paradise and features a number of world-class golf courses in the area. The courses cater to all skill levels and are known for their gorgeous ocean views among the desert landscape.

In addition to the courses, many of the resorts often provide luxurious accommodations and top-notch amenities like spas, fine dining options and, depending on the location, access to beautiful beaches. If you choose not to overnight, several resorts offer golfing day passes.

Diamante Cabo San Lucas is one of the popular resorts. This property, located on the sand dunes along the southernmost tip of Cabo San Lucas, is most famous for featuring a top-100 ranked course co-designed by Tiger Woods.

13. Eat Delicious Tacos

Okay, it’s Mexico so you probably don’t need too much arm twisting to eat tacos. If you’re going to do it then Cabo is the place. For me, besides Mexico City , Baja rates second on the best taco list. Especially fish tacos. The best ones I’ve ever eaten have been in Cabo at Taco Gardenias .

This popular restaurant has been around for over 20 years and is known for serving delicious tacos. The menu features a variety of traditional tacos, with handmade tortillas and all the toppings like cilantro, onions and a variety of fresh salsas. Of course, you can get the always popular al pastor (spicy marinated pork) but it’s the fried fish and fried shrimp tacos.

Not a taco fan? Tacos Gardenias serves other Mexican specialties, including burritos, quesadillas and tostadas. And for more taco experiences, check out a food tour while in town.

14. Go Snorkeling

With its crystal-clear waters and marine life, Cabo San Lucas is ideal for snorkeling. Explore popular spots like Land’s End or Lover’s Beach, right in Cabo, or venture out a little further on the tourist corridor to Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Beach. Both of these beaches offer sheltered coves that provide calm waters ideal for snorkeling and first-timers.

There are plenty of tour companies that offer organized outings and packages, providing all the equipment you need or depending where you are staying, you can simply rent some equipment on your own and snorkel right from the beach.

15. Enjoy a Farm to Table Experience

Farm-to-table restaurants have become a popular way to experience local Baja products. The sunshine, fertile soil and mild climate allow for year-round cultivation of fresh fruits and vegetables, making Cabo the ideal destination for this type of dining due to the farms in the area.

The nearby Sea of Cortez provides plenty of fresh seafood so restaurants in the area can easily source high-quality, locally caught fish and incorporate them into their menus.

Los Tamarindos , a farm-to-table restaurant, located on a historic 17-acre farm in San Jose del Cabo offers you the opportunity to sample some of Baja’s freshest food.

16. Catch a Sunrise

We’ve already established that I don’t like getting up super early on vacation but getting up early for a Cabo sunrise is one exception to that rule.

Because of its geographical location and the unique natural shape of Baja, Cabo San Lucas is an excellent destination for sunrises. The east-facing coastline provides unobstructed views of the horizon, allowing for clear views during sunrise.

The way the light plays on the water and the reflection of the sun, the colors are some of the most vibrant colors I’ve even seen at sunrise. It is so vivid it looks like sunset! Totally worth it. And, you can always just go back to sleep afterwards.

18. Hang Out in the Cabo Marina

Cabo’s marina is a lot of fun and strolling its pedestrian boardwalk is one of the best things to do in Cabo San Lucas day or night. With countless shops, including the huge Puerto Paraiso shopping mall, and over 50 restaurants and bars, you can find just about whatever you want.

A couple of my favorite restaurants in the Cabo San Lucas marina are Lorenzillo’s, for its patio and lobster and La Galeria , with their fresh seafood menu and friendly staff. Be on the lookout for roving Mariachi bands to serenade you for the complete Mexico experience.

19. Try Tequila

Tequila wasn’t invented in Baja. Jalisco state, where Guadalajara is located, was the birth place of tequila. But as the national beverage of Mexico, most other destinations offer some kind of tequila tours or tastings.

And Cabo San Lucas is no exception. Santos Destilados , a liquor store in downtown hosts a tequila and Mexican spirits tasting and workshop. If you’ve never done a tequila class, now’s your chance. Most people equate tequila with shots but it’s so much more than that and I promise you will walk away with a new appreciation of this beverage.

During the tour you’ll pair 9 different beverages with traditional snacks and foods and learn the ins and outs of tequila making. And conveniently, the shop stocks all those beverages so you can take some home.

20. Take Day Trip to Todos Santos

Baja California Sur is perfect for road tripping and one of the most incredible day trips from Cabo San Lucas is to Todos Santos, a cute, laid back village about an hour north. Known for its picturesque streets, colorful buildings and the infamous Hotel California, Todos Santos couldn’t be any more different than Cabo.

Full of unique experiences and a chance to learn more about Mexican culture, Todos Santo’s interesting history can be seen in its historical landmarks, including the 18th-century Mission Santa Rosa and the plentiful art galleries found around town.

If you have your own car, don’t miss one of the most popular beaches in the area, Playa Los Cerritos. You can surf, swim, or simply relax and soak up the sun. And catch a gorgeous sunset.
