What an AMAZING tour and tour operator! We took the Scenic Drive and Rain Forrest Hike through Royal Caribbean on board Harmony of the Seas. We were initially a little nervous about the ride to the Rain Forrest, but there was NO REASON for that. This is a grade A++ tour company and would recommend them to ANYONE!!! This is A MUST DO when in San Juan, and there is no better tour operator than El Yunque Tours!

guide and tourist walking through forest

Our tour was wonderful. Our guides were very knowledgeable about the rainforest and Puerto Rico. They took us on a great hike and explained so much about the area, flora, and fauna. We liked how they explained how to prepare in situations of flash flooding and taking care of the land. Micheal gave special attention to our son which meant a lot to our family. Each guide was awesome and we would highly recommend this tour.

We loved every bit of the tour. I lived in Puerto Rico for 17 years and I was impressed by the Team's knowledge. I fell in love with our Island once again. My two boys loved it! You need to come and experience El Yunque at nightfall ...words cannot describe the beauty! The Team treated us with the utmost kindness and superb professionalism! Thank you El Yunque Tours, thank you Michael and family!

I really enjoyed the tour. The tour is definitely doable without a tour guide, but Dan was very knowledgeable about the rainforest. I learned a lot and Dan and Jonathan took the time to even show us wildlife we encountered on the way to the waterfall. There are some steep areas and it is a workout on the way back, especially since it is hot. However, nothing extremely hard.

How to Spend a Day at El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico

El Yunque National Forest adds a beautiful day of adventure to your Puerto Rico vacation. It’s a must-see!

In this guide, you’ll find information about the layout of El Yunque, what waterfalls and hiking trails are musts, the panoramic views you DON’t WANT TO MISS, and your best options for getting to and from the park.

Are you ready to spend a day at El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico?

How to Spend 1 Day at El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico

El Yunque experienced significant damage from Hurricane Maria back in 2017. What’s amazing to see is how resilient nature is! Throughout the park, you can see how the landscape has been healing itself ever since.

In addition to using this guide to plan your day at El Yunque National Forest, I’d advise also checking  USDA/El Yunque National Forest  for any updates or alerts before your visit to the El Yunque rainforest. You can also check in with the rangers once you arrive.

I had an amazing day hiking in El Yunque following the ranger’s advice and the most up-to-date map available.

What is El Yunque Rainforest?

El Yunque National Forest

Located in northeastern Puerto Rico, El Yunque is the largest Puerto Rico rainforest, as well as the only rainforest in the United States National Forest system.

It was formerly known as the Caribbean National Forest until its name was changed to El Yunque, after one of the island’s Native spirits, in 2007.

El Yunque Facts

El Yunque Puerto Rico

At 28,000 acres, El Yunque National Forest is relatively small for a National Forest but it’s a lush and diverse natural space that immerses you into the rainforest ecosystem.

El Yunque is home to thousands of native plants and trees, with nearly two dozen tree species exclusively found in this forest.

There are no large animals in El Yunque but it’s home to hundreds of smaller ones like birds, bats, and lizards. Of all the El Yunque animals, several can only be found here, including the Puerto Rican Parrot and the tiny tree frogs called coquis.

No matter what time of year you’re visiting El Yunque National Forest, expect the climate to be fairly consistent all year round.  In the summer, the average high temperature is 80° F with a low of 68°. In the winter, the average high temp is 72° with a low of 58°.

El Yunque gets over 200 inches of rain a year. With all that rain, you’d expect to have a mosquito issue but I did not encounter one after a full day of hiking. Be prepared, though, for wet trails.

Along with a day on Culebra , hiking and swimming in El Yunque is one of the most popular Puerto Rico day trips.

El Yunque Visitor Center

map of El Yunque national forest

First, it’s important to know, the El Portal Rain Forest Center is CLOSED .

This was the main El Yunque Visitor’s Center before Hurricanes Irma and Maria did significant damage and shut this facility down. Extensive work is in progress to repair and reopen this visitor’s center.

Up until 2020, the visitor center had been in a short-term place just outside of the National Forest called Portalito HUB in a little town called Palmer. It’s at the base of El Yunque.

It had been a place where you could get a map, some souvenirs, bottles of water, a poncho, and use the bathroom. The employees also helped with any questions and could update you on the latest El Yunque information.

However, as of 2021, the National Forest Service is managing crowd control at El Yunque with timed reservation tickets. Find out more about how to get your ticket at recreation.gov .

Driving straight into the park, you won’t find a visitor’s center. Instead, you’re likely to see Park Staff directing you to a pull-off so you can check in with your timed-entry ticket and handing out a current El Yunque National Forest map.

It’s also an opportunity to ask any questions about trails that are open and closed on the date of your visit.

El Yunque Tours

El Yunque tours

Guided tours of El Yunque rainforest are available. These tours typically offer hotel pick-ups and returns from San Juan area hotels. If you haven’t rented a car for your Puerto Rico trip, a tour of El Yunque rainforest is the way to go , as Ubers are not allowed in the park. (More on Uber below.)

Tours range from half-day to full-day hiking tours and typically include taking a dip in an El Yunque waterfall. The full-day tours can usually be booked as a combo tour with a bio bay kayak tour outside the park for later that evening.

One of the most popular El Yunque tour options is to combine hiking with forest waterfalls and natural waterslides! You can slide into natural pools hidden in the rainforest or up the thrill level with some rope-swinging or cliff-jumping. Either way, it adds up to an unforgettable experience.

You can also book an El Yunque zipline adventure located at the edge of the forest which typically includes a swim in a natural pool, as well.  Or choose a tour that takes you off-the-beaten-path in El Yunque to discover a different side of the park.

With a rental car , though, you can experience the best of El Yunque at your own pace. Just be flexible about adjusting your day at the National Forest depending on the most current information about open and closed areas of the park.

I’d have gladly chosen an El Yunque rainforest tour if I didn’t have a rental car rather than miss out on visiting such a beautiful natural place!

El Yunque Waterfalls

El Yunque waterfalls in Puerto Rico

The ecosystem of the National Forest creates a lot of moisture which journeys downhill, eventually plunging into the park’s waterfalls and filling natural swimming holes in the process.

Nowhere are the waterfalls in Puerto Rico more beautiful than the ones you’ll see in the National Forest. El Yunque has three waterfalls and they’re all fairly accessible as you travel on the main road, PR 191.

La Mina Falls

This was the most popular waterfall to see but the trail is currently closed to the public.   It’s not expected to reopen until 2022.  Prior to its closure, La Mina saw a ton of visitors on most days, not only because of the beauty of the waterfall but also because you could take a dip in the waterfall’s pool.

When La Mina eventually re-opens to the public, it’s about a 45-minute hike that descends for .7 miles before reaching the falls.

La Coca Falls

El Yunque waterfalls

This waterfall is the easiest to see because of its location right off the main road, PR-151, about 8 km. from the park’s entrance. There’s a pull-off area just across from the waterfall. If it’s busy, you’ll have to find another spot to pull off and walk back to the falls.

You won’t see parking lots but cars can pull over just off the road. These spots fill up quickly, though, so you may have to drive up the road a bit before finding an open spot.

Be mindful of the “No Parking” signs. Park Rangers are making the rounds so I wouldn’t park in a restricted area….as tempting as that might be.  Plus, these restricted zones tend to be in blind curves or tighter spots on the road. You don’t want to be dealing with damage to your rental car.

Juan Diego Creek

Not far from La Coca falls, you can hike to Juan Diego Creek. It was marked at 9.6 km on the map but I drove right past it because the sign marking the trailhead was down. Once I got my bearings, I found the trailhead but it was temporarily closed on the day of my visit.

If open, it’s an easy hike to the first set of waterfalls and swimming holes to jump in. It can get crowded here since most El Yunque tour groups tend to stop here.

If you can, make this your morning stop and continue going up the trail to more secluded falls and swimming holes. Expect the footing to be wet, muddy, and slippery on rocks.

It was a bummer to miss out on the swimming holes, but in the end, the El Yunque hiking trails that take you up to the Mt. Britton Tower & El Yunque Peaks are fantastic hikes with views that really pay off.

Bano Grande

El Yunque rainforest

Not a waterfall, but a large natural pool just an easy walk from the main road.

You can walk around Bano Grande which includes a stone bridge that acts as an observation point to view the water. It’s further up the road past Juan Diego Creek and La Mina Falls, on the way to the Mt. Britton trailhead. A stop here should take no more than 10 minutes.

El Yunque Trails

El Yunque hiking in Puerto Rico

El Yunque has the best hiking in Puerto Rico! Plan to dedicate a full day if you’re interested in hiking a few of the trails, especially the one that takes you up to the El Yunque Peak.

No matter which trail(s) you choose, wear sturdy hiking shoes ! Given El Yunque’s cool and damp climate, it’s also not a bad idea to pack a poncho, especially if you’re carrying a camera or other things in your daypack that shouldn’t get wet.

La Coca Trail is a challenging trail that begins just across from La Coca Falls. it. It’s at least 1.5 hours one-way but most hikes on this trail will take about 4 hours for a round trip. The hike is steep and muddy with several stream crossings. The payoff comes at the end where sometimes you can jump into a natural swimming hole.

My advice is to ask the Park Ranger about the water flow to that natural swimming hole. If there hasn’t been enough run-off into the natural pool, you’ll miss out on the trail’s reward.

Hearing the pool at the end of La Coca trail wasn’t full, I chose instead to head up to the highest peaks in the forest. I didn’t want to pass on the panoramic views.

Pro Tip – Want to make sure your day of hiking is enjoyable? Be prepared on what to wear and what to bring when going on a hike,

El Yunque Puerto Rico National Parks

I headed up the Mt. Britton trail, which is a one-way loop that ascends to the Mt. Britton Tower.

It’s a fairly steep climb along a narrow trail for about 1 mile. To this point, the hike should take roughly 45 minutes one-way to the tower. Once you reach the tower, it’s a short trip up a narrow flight of stairs to the top of the tower.

El Yunque trails

The tower offers sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. You won’t want to miss seeing these views for yourself!

Once you’ve completed the Mt. Britton trail, you can head down from the tower and walk towards the Mt Britton Spur which takes you to the trailhead for El Yunque Peak, the highest peak in the forest.

This section of the hike to El Yunque Peak should take about an hour one-way.

El Yunque hiking

El Yunque Peak has stunning views of the water but you can also take in the entire National Forest including Mt. Britton Tower from a distance. The peak is one of the highest in Puerto Rico, standing at just over 3500 feet above sea level. You’ll see a viewing tower with a platform to take 360° view photos.

El Yunque National Forest Puerto Rico

If you’re up at the peak long enough, especially in the afternoon, expect to encounter a weather system passing through with clouds, mist, and a cool blast of air in between the bursts of sunshine.

How to Get from San Juan to El Yunque Rainforest

El Yunque National Forest Puerto Rico

Getting to and from El Yunque is easy to do with a rental car. I highly recommend using the Waze app for navigation. Driving in Puerto Rico is not all that complicated but if you have no clue where you’re going it makes for a frustrating start to the day. Waze put me right where I needed to be.

From your San Juan hotel , the ride should take about 45 minutes. Depending on when you’re planning to drive over it could take a bit longer because of traffic.

On weekday mornings, expect to find some commuter traffic, especially around the San Juan area. Plus, there’s plenty of road work going on either because of repairs from hurricane damage or general road maintenance.

A few words about using Uber to get to the National Forest. Don’t do it.

Uber was readily available and affordable in and around the San Juan area. It’s possible a driver will offer to drive you just outside of El Yunque, which will require an uphill walk into the park.

The bigger problem is the return journey, however. Cell phone signals are weaker in the forest and, technically, Uber drivers aren’t allowed to enter the park for pick-ups.

Reports online tell of travelers who were stuck or saw others in this predicament and offered to help them when they couldn’t contact the driver who offered to pick them up.

If you don’t have a rental car , it’s safer to opt for one of the many El Yunque rainforest tours instead. You’ll be able to enjoy the day without worrying whether or not an Uber driver will be there to pick you up.

Your Puerto Rico trip isn’t complete without a day exploring Puerto Rico’s only National Park, El Yunque! You’ll be glad you took the time to explore this lush tropical corner of the island.

This national forest looks amazing! So many things to do. I have a goal of visiting many places in South America over the age of 30. Once I hit 30, I’m going here!

el yunque hiking tours

What a great goal, Alexandra! Good luck and I’m sure you’ll enjoy El Yunque when you make it there. 🙂

el yunque hiking tours

Hi Jackie! What an informative post and great pictures! My wife and I will be there in August. Do you happen to know the admission fee into El Yunque National Park? I’ve read different things online.

Thanks for reading, Justin. 🙂 The forest itself is free to visit, drive into, and hike. Enjoy!

el yunque hiking tours

I am teacher who loves traveling too. My goal has been to get to Puerto Rico! and this march I am coming with some friends and my husband on our spring break.. We really want to go to El Yunque. We are renting a car from San Juan…and would like to hike in the forest and see all the fauna. My fear is that the trails are very rugged. I can’t tell from the reviews on the forest if there are trails for a medium hiker. We are in our early 60’s and are relatively healthy….but we must be realistic…we aren’t twenty year olds any more. What trails would you suggest we adventure….or should we try and find a guide.

Thanks for reading, Lynne. Always love to help fellow teachers succeed in their travels. 🙂 The trail up to Mt. Britton Lookout Tower and El Yunque Peak have a medium climb but nothing too severe and the trail is well-maintained. To contrast, some of the shorter trails to the different falls in the park (if open) might be shorter but the terrain can be more rugged than up to the tower and peak. If you have a car, it’s easy to drive yourself and hike without a guide. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes. It’s a rainforest so no matter which trail you’re on it can be slippery in spots. Have fun in Puerto Rico! 🙂

el yunque hiking tours

I am going to be there in couple of days. I have Friday and Saturday to visit the rain forest but don’t have a reservation. What can I do without reservation. I did get a reservation for Sunday but I will only have 3 hours before I will need to get back to airport. What can and should I do in that short time?

Thanks for reading, JK. I would focus on some of the park’s famous waterfalls like Coca Falls and Juan Diego Falls. The Juan Diego Creek Trail is short and easy and also has some natural swimming pools along the way. If you prefer to hike than swim, the Mount Britton Trail and Tower are great. It’s a little less than a mile out and back and brings you to the tower which has sweeping views of the rainforest and the Caribbean Sea. Once you reach the tower, turn back the way you came. Continuing to El Yunque Peak will take more than than you have to spend in the park. Have a great trip!

el yunque hiking tours

Hi, we have a rental car, is there a way for us go drive ourselves to the forest and purchase zip line tickets? Or is ziplinning only done through a tour company? Thank you!

Thanks for reading, Rachel. You can certainly drive yourself to the forest. However, as far as I know, you’d need to book with a company. I would reach out to that tour company directly to see if you can go directly to a location since you have a car. Hope that helps. Enjoy your trip!

The Bio Bay & El Yunque Rainforest Combo Tour is a 12-hour adventure takes you to not 1 but 2 of the most iconic natural attractions in the entire country. This full-day journey will take you kayaking, through the rainforest, and more!

With pickup included, you don’t have to worry about your own transportation. You’ll meet up with your local tour guides who all have their lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certifications. Not only that, but they’re very knowledgeable and experienced.

Start off with a scenic drive towards the rainforest, but not before you make a stop at a local fruit stand to get fueled up before starting along a hike. This hike weaves and winds through all kinds of native plants and trees.

After you wade through the river and scale some rocks, you’ll get to a natural pool at the bottom of a waterfall! Here, you’ll be able to enjoy the rope swing, cliff jumping, and even a natural waterslide!

A well-deserved break is up next, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant. Next, you’ll receive instructions and guidance on how to kayak.

After you feel comfortable, you’ll kayak around 30 minutes through the Red Mangrove Forest to the Bioluminescent Lagoon. This is one of the most phenomenal sights, where swirls of blue light appear with each movement of water, and glowing fish are present throughout the entire trip.

6. Best Hiking Tour: Tinajas Hiking Adventure to El Yunque Rainforest

  • Duration: 7 hours
  • Includes: Fresh local fruit

If you’re ready for a muddy, exciting adventure, look no further than the Tijanas Hiking Adventure to El Yunque Rainforest ! This 7-hour tour is a bit shorter than some of the others, so if you want to pack more into your evening this is a nice option.

With a pickup and drop-off in San Juan, just make sure you’re dressed appropriately for rainforest hiking and meet your guide at your hotel or other pickup location!

This one is easily one of the best hiking trips in the world. First off, the tour guides are incredibly knowledgeable about the area. Not only the history of the rainforest, but first-hand accounts that make the experience much more interesting.

Just like the others, you’ll head straight into the hike where you’ll get to learn all about and see local flora and fauna.

Be prepared for a lot of muddy areas and climbing rocks, so make sure your shoes have a nice amount of traction on the soles and won’t rip easily!

Once you get to the Tinajas waterfalls, you’ll get the chance to swim in the natural pools with the rest of your small group! After that hike, you’re sure to love taking a dip (and wash some of the mud off!) in these refreshing waters. Jump off the rocks, ride the smooth, natural waterslides, or simply enjoy Mother Nature’s beauty.

Meanwhile, your guides will prepare some fresh fruits for your group. You’ll also get to have a delicious lunch in a local restaurant by the beach in Luquillo.

You’ll follow your experienced, certified tour guide throughout exciting trails and across all kinds of terrain!

Once you’re picked up by your guide in San Juan, you’ll head out towards the forest. During the ride, you’ll be provided with bottled water and light snacks.

First aid equipment and lifejackets are also supplied, if needed. The guide does a great job at making sure you’re safe, though, it’s recommended that you are somewhat physically-fit as the trail is moderately-strenuous.

The tour starts off with a 30-minute trek on a river as you wade through the water and scale rocks. The sun is shielded by the shade of bamboo trees and complemented by all kinds of flora and fauna.

During your journey, your guide will narrate and share all kinds of fascinating stories as well as interesting facts about the ecosystem and history of the area.

Tour Information & Booking

Puerto rico travel guide, getting there –.

By far the easiest way to get to Puerto Rico is to fly, as it’s an island (rather, comprised of various). However, if you’re coming from the Dominican Republic or Virgin Islands, you can head over by ferry. PR’s main airport is Luis Muñoz International Airport/San Juan Airport (SJU), located in Carolina.

With various nonstop flights from the US every day, you’ll find the most affordable ones are those departing from gateway cities located in the south and east of the US. This makes sense, as it’s closer to the island. Miami and New York are the most common departure airports, though you’ll find flights through all major US carriers such as US Airways, JetBlue, and Continental.

Getting Around –

San Juan is a very easy city to move around in. The most “touristy” areas are perfect for walking, and we found it overall quite a safe city to do so in. In fact, you could realistically walk for the entirety of your stay in the city, depending on what you want to see.

Walking – If you really want to get to know the city, walking is the best way to do it. If you’re in Old San Juan, you’ll find the hottest attractions all within 5 or so blocks. Condado, Isla Verde, and Ocean Park are all great options as well, and here you can walk to beaches, restaurants, and some of the best shopping spots.

Rental Car – We personally recommend renting a car for at least a day, so you can check out beaches and other parts of the island not within walking distance. However, as you can see by the tours on our guide, there are many situations where transportation comes included in the tour price. Driving here is pretty intuitive and not much different from driving in most cities in the US.

Trolley – Another plus goes to Old San Juan, for having their free trolley service. This service will transport you with style, to and from the top attractions in this part of the city. Running from 7am to 7pm during the week and 9am to 7pm on the weekend, it’s a nice alternative if you don’t feel like walking.

Taxi – Taxis are of course an option, and a more convenient one if you don’t want to hassle with having to find parking with a rental car. You’ll find these taxis lined up outside the airport, near hotels, and most main tourist attractions.

Bike – With the amazing weather San Juan has the vast majority of the year, why not get some fresh air and bike? The city has created designated bike lanes which are really fun to use along the beach.

Where to Stay –

With so many great neighborhoods to stay in, it can be hard to decide which one is right for you.

Old San Juan – Old San Juan is our personal favorite, and is the top in terms of sightseeing. Almost all of the top tourist attractions are located here, such as the San Juan Bautista Catedral, Puerta de San Juan, La Fortaleza, Castillo de San Cristobal, El Morro, Paseo De La Princesa, and much more. Not only that, but you have one of the best beaches, upscale dining spots, and fun bars. Nightlife here is practically incomparable to anywhere else on the island.

Condado – If you’re going with the entire family, Condado is probably the best spot. It’s very close to some of the best beaches in the country, with plenty of outdoor activities, restaurants, and more. A good portion of the hotels found here are more “luxurious” with rooftop terraces, pools, spas, and an ocean view from your room.

Ocean Park – If your main reason for going to San Juan is the tropical vibes and beaches, then Ocean Park may be where you want to stay. The beach is within walking distance and very close to Condado and Isla Verde. However, you’ll definitely need to get a taxi or other form of transporation to get to Old San Juan. This is a “younger” area with plenty of nightlife and exciting bars to explore.

Isla Verde – Are you looking to get away to San Juan for a romantic vacation? If so, then Isla Verde is a great option. There are plenty of charming hotels, fine dining restaurants, bustling nightclubs, and more. We recommend starting off the morning with a romantic stroll down the beach!

Restaurants and Eating Out –

You can find just about any type of cuisine in San Juan, as it is a cosmopolitan city. It all depends on what you’re looking for.

Fine Dining – Marmalade is a top option if you want to go upscale. French, Caribbean, and Spanish flavors are all combined here. With modern trends and interesting visions, you’re sure to try something new here. 1919 is sophisticated seafood, from passionfruit curd to coconut ganache, this beachfront restaurant is supremely romantic and high-class.

Local –  You simply can’t visit San Juan without trying the local cuisine. Hecho en Casa or “homemade” is definitely aptly-named. The family-owned spot prides themselves on their comida criolla that the country is known for. As everything is sourced locally, the flavors are rich and pure.

La Casita Blanca is another authentic, traditional restaurant that has a menu which changes every day with 10-12 dishes posted on a whiteboard. However, you can’t get more authentic than a chinchorro. These are little food “kiosks” that simply offer the best-tasting, traditional dishes in the city.

International – We love the way they’ve managed to combine Asian and Creole flavors in the restaurant, Shibo. We love their sushi bar as well, with ultra-fresh fish and fusion cocktails like the sake sangria! If you’re in the mood for some tacos, head on over to Acapulco Taqueria Mexicana. The tacos de pollo al pastor and the chilaquiles are our favorites!

Nightlife and Entertainment –

The vibrant nightlife found here is never-ending, between casinos, nightclubs, lounges, and more.

Old San Juan – As we mentioned previously, Old San Juan is an idyllic spot for nightlife. Just walking around at night is full of music, smiling faces, and a general liveliness. The wrought iron lanterns illuminate the cobblestone streets, offering a more romantic vibe. Salsa, flamenco, and the smells of delicious food fill the air.

Try heading to South Fortaleza, San Sebastian, or Calle del Cristo for the best bar and food options. However, you’ll also find local artists, live music, and kiosks dotting this area.

New City – This area consists of Condado, Ocean Park, and Isla Verde/Carolina. While Old San Juan tends to be a bit more “old-school” and laidback with their nightlife, these districts are filled with trendy hotspots, casinos, nightclubs, and generally more flashiness. Isla Verde Avenue is lined with fun places, such as the upbeat Brava nightclub or Chico Cabaret at Fairmont El San Juan Hotel.

West Coast – Perhaps you’re the kind of person who wants to keep their swimsuit and flipflops on the entire trip. If so, then the west coast is the place for you. Rincon features some of the best beachfront bars in the country. Tamboo Bar offers unmatched beach views and everyone is so nice here.

Bonus – Try out kayaking at night in the Laguna del Condado! If you prefer you can also paddleboard! With LED lights attached, you’ll have fun with the rest of your small group and see the bright city lights reflecting off the blue waters as you paddle the night away.

Weather –

San Juan’s climate really doesn’t vary a whole lot throughout the year. For example, the temperatures tend to always stay between 72 degrees and 89 degrees Fahrenheit. You won’t often find it hotter or colder than that.

As they are a bunch of islands, it can be pretty humid throughout almost the entire year. From the beginning of June to the end of August, it can also get relatively windy, too. The wetter season is from April 24 th to December 2 nd , which isn’t really the best time to go. In fact, the best time to visit San Juan is from early December to mid-April. The weather during this time of year is sunny, warm, and not windy or rainy.

Attractions –

San Juan has a very interesting history, and it’s something that we highly recommend exploring. There are various castles and forts that are not only impressive visually, but inside as well. Castillo San Cristobal is over 500 years old, and is actually the biggest Spanish fort in the “New World”. Castillo San Felipe del Morro or “El Morro” is a whopping 6 levels tall!

Make sure to check out El Cuartel de Ballaja, after trekking through El Morro. Built between 1854 and 1864 as a way to house Spanish soldiers and their families, it’s a museum, café, restaurant, dance school, and offices today.

If you happen to be staying in Condado, stop by Fortin Geronimo which is a small yet very interesting fort located inside of Caribe Hilton. Built in the 17 th century, it now risks falling into the ocean so this may be the only chance you get to see it.

Other Notable Pieces of Architecture – La Fortaleza/Palacio Santa Catalina and Casa Blanca were the first buildings built in the city, which are obviously very important and very beautiful. Today, the country’s governor resides in the Palacio Santa Catalina. Casa Blanca was originally created to be the home of Ponce de Leon, the first governor of Puerto Rico. Today, we recommend taking a self-guided tour of the gorgeous gardens and inside the mansion.

You don’t have to be religious to appreciate Cathedral San Juan Bautista. As the second-oldest church in all of the Americas, it’s quite the sight to see. Not only that, but the remains of explorer Juan Ponce de Leon rest inside the cathedral.

Paseo de La Princesa – If you have some time and are looking to take a low-key stroll by yourself or with your significant other, this is an excellent option. The 19 th -century promenade goes all throughout Old San Juan, with colonial architecture, fountains, street food, and cobblestone streets and trees with views of the bay in the background.

Hang Out on The Beach – There are various beaches to choose from, and no matter where you stay, you’ll likely have a beach within walking distance. Condado Beach is very popular with families, and draws some parallels with Miami with its luxury high-rise resorts surrounding it.

Balneario del Escambron is another solid option, with clean sand, relatively calm waters, and is oftentimes easy to find a spot on the beach.

Museums – San Juan is a very artistic city, and their museums are some of the best places to see some of it firsthand! The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is the most popular, with a massive 24 exhibition galleries to see. The Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art is a fine alternative, though is much newer than the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico.

For more of a history lesson, you need to see the Museo de Las Americas. Here, you’ll learn all about the history of the Americas, with 4 galleries. It’s obviously a smaller museum, but is definitely worth checking out their Indigenous America section.

Tips –

  • Make sure you keep mosquito repellent handy. You’re going to be on a tropical island in the Caribbean. As you can probably imagine, there are going to be quite a few mosquitos flying around.
  • If you’re only going to San Juan for a short period of time (like a weekend), we recommend hanging out mainly in Old San Juan. You can get around by walking everywhere in this zone, and is home to most of the notable tourist spots and general points of interest.
  • If you can leave San Juan, do check out the surrounding areas and the rain forests. For a great way to see the beaches and forests, go by horseback. There a lots of tours by horseback in Puerto Rico that you can see areas that few visitors get to see. Be sure to see Puerto Rico from the water and take a sunset cruise at sunset. See old San Juan Bay from the water. Speaking of water, be sure to check out the coral reefs with a snorkeling tour .
  • Try to keep an umbrella with you when in the city. While almost every month is sunny, it tends to rain quite frequently. From April to November is the rainy season, and from June to November there is a hurricane season.
  • Puerto Rico uses the US dollar, and you don’t need your US passport. That’s right, with PR’s political status, if you’re a US citizen you can travel to and from PR with just your license! If you’re not a US citizen, it’ll be just like you’re traveling to the US – whatever you need to enter the United States is what you’ll need in Puerto Rico.

El Yunque Rainforest Hiking Tour!

Hike Puerto Rico’s famous El Yunque Rainforest with our expert guides with permit YNF-22007. It’s the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system.

The hiking trail is considered to be  moderately difficult  (Level 4 of 5). You’ll hike up 500 feet at a 40-degree incline. After the roughly 45-minute hiking exercise, you’ll reach the Mt. Britton observation tower. It’s elevated at 3,087 feet over the sea level. And you’ll be rewarded with an amazing, 360-degree view of the Atlantic Ocean, metropolitan area, and Caribbean Sea. If you’re lucky, you can even see Puerto Rico’s islands of Culebra and Vieques!

After soaking in the view, you’ll visit the well-known La Coca Falls. It stands at 85 feet (26 meters) tall on a huge rock formation – a perfect backdrop to capture your time at El Yunque.

Then, you’ll visit a local, family-owned restaurant offering an array of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine such as rice & beans, chicken pork chops, cold coconuts. Be sure to try their “empanadas” – a local-favorite. You can also order piña coladas – Puerto Rico’s national drink! You’ll also have the opportunity to buy souvenirs – a great way to support local businesses.

Once you rejuvenate, you’ll go to one more stop! You’ll have the chance to swim right into El Yunque’s river.  Río Mameyes,  or Mameyes River, is designated as a Wild and Scenic River. This means the river is protected from overuse, instream developments and other impacts that could impact its scenic and recreational value.

Hiking in El Yunque Rainforest: 6 Things to Know Before You Go

Hiking in El Yunque Rainforest: 6 Things to Know Before You Go

Hiking in El Yunque Rainforest is the perfect day trip for adventurous travellers. It’s the only ecosystem of it’s kind in the United States National Parks system, and easy to get to from all over Puerto Rico. The rainforest home to hundreds of different species, and full of beautiful trails, waterfalls, and scenic views.

My trip to go hiking in El Yunque Rainforest was one of the highlights of my time in Puerto Rico. I love experiencing new ecosystems, and there’s nothing like relaxing by a waterfall! Since it’s a one-of-a-kind place, it’s best to visit with a little bit of planning and knowledge about what to expect.

Hiking in El Yunque Rainforest!

Getting to el yunque rainforest.

If you have the option, then I highly recommend renting a car – even if it’s just for a day trip to go hiking in El Yunque Rainforest. The drive from San Juan is about 45 minutes. It’s worth finding a way to go on your own because the tour groups lead to it being fairly loud and crowded at the waterfalls.

Visiting El Yunque rainforest was a somewhat spontaneous decision for us. It was too late to book a day tour, so we took an Uber. *Update: It was brought to my attention that Uber drivers are technically not permitted in El Yunque Rainforest. Uber is a great way to get around elsewhere in Puerto Rico, and it’s very cheap in the city of San Juan.

Uber was a great (though yes, expensive) way to get to El Yunque as we didn’t have a car rental.  The Uber app does not work in the rainforest, so make arrangements with your driver to pick you up later. This method of transport is up to the driver’s discretion and may not be available when you visit.*

Have El Yunque Rainforest Waterfalls to Yourself

The rainforest is fairly crowded in some areas, but it’s also massive and well marked. Many tour groups require their participants to stay in designated locations, and I recommend walking right past those areas! Print out a map before you go, or pick one up at the visitor’s centre.

La Mina Fall

This is the most popular waterfall and the one that tour groups go to, the trail keeps going and it’s easy to access lower levels of the waterfall that are secluded and quiet. Climb down a few rocks and follow the trail further, and you’ll have a waterfall to yourself. Head here first thing, to hopefully beat the crowds.

Juan Diego Falls

Juan Diego Falls aren’t part of most tours hiking in El Yunque rainforest tours, and are therefore a lot quieter! You can have this waterfall essentially to yourself. It’s just off the road at 9.8 km in to the park, so you’re actually back tracking from La Mina to Juan Diego. Don’t stop at the end of the trail – go a little bit further and there’s a massive waterfall! It’s a little muddy, but worth it. Just be careful and watch your step.

rainforest canopy

Experience Rainforest Wildlife Away From Large Groups

Many people will visit the rainforest and not see any wildlife. Tour groups power through the rainforest at alarming speeds, talking loudly. One group even had music playing. It’s too bad, because hiking in El Yunque Rainforest is actually a great opportunity to see wildlife.

If you want to see wildlife, go slow and stay quiet. Hold back and let large groups pass you. Remember that you’re walking through someone else’s home, and do your best to be respectful.

I saw two hummingbirds on my hike, and dozens of other birds. You just have to move slowly, stay quiet, and watch for movement.

It Rains El Yunque Rainforest – a lot

Rain in the rainforest is it’s own category of weather. Raindrops pool on the leaves above you, and double in size before spilling over the edge. On our hike back, we got completely drenched. The rain still hadn’t let up when we left over an hour later.

It rains of average of 4 times a day in El Yunque, so be ready to get wet. Anything that needs to stay dry must be in a waterproof bag . If you’re bringing any electronics, make sure you have a waterproof case or bag for them. It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes (or at least a t-shirt) because while most of Puerto Rico is warm it can get a little chilly hiking in El Yunque Rainforest, especially if you’re soaked!

We ar Good Footwear

The trails in El Yunque are more like walking paths than hiking trails, so you won’t be out of breath, but you will need sneakers. Hiking in El Yunque Rainforest is definitely not difficult, provided that you have the right footwear. The trails are laid out with stone tiles that become very slick when it rains. Like I said it rains often, so you will probably be making on wet stones at some point.

Wear close toed shoes with a little bit of grip. People wearing flip-flops and sandals were struggling on the trails when the rain came down.

Respect the Rainforest

The earth fell away on one side of the trail, and I stopped to look down in to the array of plants in search of wildlife. My eyes were drawn to something bright and red, only to discover that it was a candy bar wrapper.

This part of the day broke my heart. There were wrappers, empty drink cups, and bottles along the trail, too far out of reach to have been forgotten there by accident. This is absolutely not okay, so if you’re bring snacks please tuck the wrappers back in your bag. This isn’t so much a tip to know as just, a general reminder. The rainforest is free and open to any number of visitors each day, but it won’t stay that way if we don’t protect it.

We must respect this beautiful ecosystem if we want to keep enjoying it! Have fun hiking in El Yunque Rainforest!

2 Replies to “Hiking in El Yunque Rainforest: 6 Things to Know Before You Go”

The article is great but there is something I should mention: Uber is not allowed inside the rainforest. As I driver I always send a message to any rider that may look like this is their destination. An Uber driver caught there by the authorities in charge of the area may face a substantially high fine. The only way to legally go inside is by renting a car, going on your own car, or schedule a tour.

Hi there! Thanks for this update. When I visited Puerto Rico the only restricted area for Uber was the airports, it seems that is expanding. I’ll look in to this further and update the article.

El Yunque Waterfall & Hiking Guide

Located in the tropical Caribbean, Puerto Rico provides visitors with warm and beautiful weather, perfect for outdoor activities. One of the best places in the country to disconnect and soak up sweep views is El Yunque National Rainforest. It’s also a popular spot for anyone seeking out the impressive El Yunque waterfall hikes.

El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. System of National Forests. It’s found in northeastern Puerto Rico, on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo mountains. It was formerly known as the Caribbean National Forest, and in 2007, the name changed to ‘El Yunque’ after one of the island’s Native spirits.

This may be one of the smaller areas, encompassing only around 28,000 acres (113.32 km 2) , but it has one of the most biologically diverse rainforests around.

HOW TO GET TO EL YUNQUE

The rainforest can be explored from many different access points, but the main National Park Service area, including the El Yunque Visitor Center, is along 191, which can be accessed just a few miles East of Rio Grande. The drive to the Visitor Center will take about 40-45 minutes if you’re staying in San Juan .

El Yunque Road Map

Route 186, secondary road and Scenic Byway with National Park Service trails extends south out of Rio Grande. You’ll find fewer crowds along the route, but also poorer road conditions. There are some great hikes and waterfalls along the way though.

But, for a first timer who wants to see the major sights of El Yunque, start your adventure at the Visitor Center and explore along route 191 to see some of the best and most popular El Yunque trails.

** Post-hurricane Maria & Irma notice: Some of the trails remain closed until further notice. Check USDA El Yunque Rainforest for updates and alerts before visiting.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Driving: Puerto Rico driving rules are similar to any state in the U.S. You’ll drive on the right side of the road.  The winding mountain roads can be somewhat narrow, so use caution around turns. And, if you’re prone to car sickness, you may want to bring some medicine along just in case.

Parking: You’d need to park on the side of the road for most hiking trails and waterfalls. Be aware of the “No Parking” signs; don’t park in a restricted area – as tempting as it may be, you may get into some trouble like being fined by one of the park rangers. Some of the trailheads have very limited parking, so try to arrive as early as possible.

Opening Hours: The forest is open daily from 7:30 am to 6 pm, except for Christmas Day. After being closed due to hurricane damage, the new El Portal Visitors’ Center has reopened and is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, also except for Christmas Day.

El Yunque Fees: There is no fee to enter the forest. Access to the Visitor Center will cost $8 for adults, and is free for children under 15 years. Guided tours are also available at a cost.

** Reservations are currently REQUIRED for the La Mina Recreation Area(Rt. 191) due to health and safety restrictions. Reservations must be made in advance on the Recreation.gov website, and the FEE is $2 per vehicle . Availability is limited and typically books up at least a week in advance. Additional tickets may be made available at 8am the day before. So, if you’ve missed the chance for tickets on your date, you can still try to get a last minute ticket- or visit one of the other areas within the park.

Climate: El Yunque gets over 200 inches of rain (508 cm) per year at high elevations. Given it’s a rainforest, it’s not a bad idea to pack a rain jacket or poncho in. Flash flooding is also common, so if hiking near waterfalls keep an eye on the weather.

Cell Phone Service: Cell Phone service is spotty at best within El Yunque, so plan ahead to be without any signal. The main roads are well marked, but offline maps may be beneficial. In addition to road maps, El Yunque National Forest is working to go paper free through the use of their app with offline maps of the trails. You can download the app from the app store, or find more information here.

There are plenty of guided tours of the El Yunque Rainforest. Most options offer hotel pick-ups and drop-offs from the San Juan area.

This full-day guided El Yunque waterfall tour takes you to more off-the-beaten-path waterfalls around the forest and is full of excitement and adventure. It won’t be a tour through the main side of the rainforest, so if you’re wanting to hike the Nation Park Service trails, you may want to look at the first option.

Once you’ve arrived at Ceiba, you’ll begin a 25-30-minute hike and short river trek. As you enter the forest, you’ll begin your off-the-beaten-path adventure. Climbing over rocks and through the lush jungle until you reach pristine natural pools and majestic waterfalls.

This tour will lead you to a super cool rope swing and, if you’re brave enough, a cliff jump. You’ll be able to spend time enjoying the scenery before you proceed to the next stop. There, you’ll find an impressive natural waterslide and other pools. Your tour will be led by a certified guide who will share information about the forest as you go along.

Book your guided hike and waterfall tour here.

Combo Tour: El Yunque Off the Beaten Path and Bio Bay Kayaking

Tour covers lesser known areas of the park.

Start your day off with an early hike in El Yunque, enjoying spectacular mountain views and an optional waterfall swim to rejuvenate and cool off. In the evening, you’ll continue your tour with a kayaking trip to the magical bay consisting of bioluminescence in the water . This special bay features a unique variety of plankton that glow when the water is disturbed.

Your tour includes park fees, a professional guide, and a round-trip back to your hotel.

BEST EL YUNQUE WATERFALLS

El Yunque Waterfall Map

There are plenty of El Yunque National Forest waterfalls to check out, some more off the beaten path than others. There are three famous falls, reasonably accessible as you travel from the main road on the PR 191, La Mina Waterfall, Juan Diego Falls, and La Coca Falls.

One of the most popular things to do is hike to the waterfalls in El Yunque. So, let’s take a look at some of the best waterfalls in Puerto Rico’s rainforest.

La Mina Waterfall

** Post-hurricane Maria & Irma notice: La Mina Trail is currently closed for maintenance due to the hurricanes.

La Mina Waterfall, El Yunque Puerto Rico

  • Location:  Rt. 191
  • Hike Required:  3/4 mile

Cascada la Mina (La Mina Falls), is one of the most popular waterfalls in the El Yunque forest. These phenomenal falls drop over 35 feet into a natural swimming pool, reaching up to 65 degrees°F (18°C), ideal for dipping in and cooling off.

To reach the falls via trail, it’s necessary to cross the river over a couple of bridges that offer scenic views of various cascades and pools.

The trail is well-maintained, and it’s a relatively short hike to the cascading falls and pools below.

La Coca Falls

La Coca Falls in El Yunque Puerto Rico

  • Hike Required:  None; Adjacent to Road

The spectacular La Coca Falls stands at an elevation of 1,476 feet (450 meters) above sea level, and drops 85 feet (26 meters) onto large rock formations at the bottom. Because of its unique rock surface that appears smooth, La Coca Falls is a favorite spot to capture on film – definitely insta worthy.

The La Coca Falls is the easiest to see because it’s location is right off the PR-191 main road, around 4.9 miles (8 km) from the park’s entrance. There is a small parking lot just up from the falls.

Note: There is no swimming allowed, and the rocks are very slippery.

Juan Diego Creek

Waterfalls in Juan Diego Creek, El Yunque Puerto Rico

  • Hike Required:  1/4 mile

Just up from La Coca Falls, past Yokahu Tower is the Juan Diego Creek trail and waterfalls. The short path leads to several natural pools that are great for swimming in and relaxing amidst the jungle.

The Juan Diego Creek is actually a set of cascades that follows the river into the rainforest. The trailhead sign is visible from the PR 191 main road, with limited parking.

Rio Espiritu Santo

  • Location:  Rt. 186

This hidden waterfall is located just off Route 186.  Near the bridge that crosses the river, there’s a small parking area where you can view the waterfalls, and even climb the rocks to take a dip in the natural pools.

This is the best easily accessible waterfall along route 186, but if you take your time, there will be plenty of other small waterfalls and natural pools to swim in.  And the best part is that you’ll have them nearly to yourself.  But, be aware that road conditions on Route 186 aren’t the best.  So, drive carefully.

Las Paylas Natural Water Slides

Las Paylas Natural Water Slides El Yunque (1)

  • Location:  Rt. 983

Not part of El Yunque National Park proper, these natural waterslides and pools are located on private property at the edge of the park.  It’s a great spot for a bit of fun and excitement after a day of hiking.

To ready the water slides, you’ll need to pay $5 to park on private property.  The owner will direct you toward the path to the slides.  It’s not nearly as busy at the waterfalls on Rt. 191, but don’t expect this place to be off the beaten path.  It’s a popular spot for small tour groups to stop.

EL YUNQUE HIKING TRAILS

Although it’s possible to hop in the car or do a quick drive-by tour, the only way to fully appreciate El Yunque’s true majesty is to park and hike. It won’t take long to become completely enveloped by the lush foliage and surrounds.

El Yunque is one of the most ecologically significant areas in Puerto Rico, offering tons of options for hiking trails. There are over 24 miles of trails, varying in difficulty. Let’s take a look at some of the best trails for an El Yunque rainforest hike.

Make sure to download the National Park Service App for offline hiking maps, and check out the Route 191 trail map HERE , and Route 186 trail map HERE . I can’t stress enough how fantastic the app is. Not only is it offline which is so important, but it has detailed maps of each trail. Don’t wait, just go download it!

Note : Other trails worth mentioning; Angelito Trail, Big Tree Trail, Los Picachos Trail, and the Baño de Oro Trail.

El Yunque Trail

view of the mountains from the top of El Yunque Hiking Trail

  • Distance: 2.6 miles (4.2 km)
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Trail Type: Out and Back

One of the best trails in Puerto Rico is the 2.6 mile El Yunque Trail to the El Yunque Peak. At the top, you’ll find sweeping views of the beautifully green-hued rainforest.

The trail takes you to the highest points in the forest with an elevation of 630 – 1050 meters, to the El Yunque Peak. You can access the path through the Caimitillo or Mt. Britton Spur trail.

The trail starts at the Palo Colorado Information Center and from there, you’ll ascend through sierra palms before reaching the picturesque, misty Cloud Forest . On the way, you’ll come to notice the variations in trees as the elevation changes.

The trail path consists of asphalt, gravel, and stone – and after rain, it can become muddy. It’s best to wear a comfortable pair of boots with a good grip.

La Mina Trail

  • Distance: 0.7 miles (1.1 km)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

The La Mina trail, known as one of the best waterfall hikes in El Yunque, will take you along the course of the scenic La Mina River, which carves itself through the forest to the famous La Mina Falls in Puerto Rico.

The hike will take you about 45 minutes to complete and descends for about 0.7 miles before reaching the exquisite falls cascading into a serene natural swimming pool. La Mina Trail and the Big Tree Trail both end at La Mina Falls, so consider taking the Big Tree Trail for a slightly easier hike.

Note: Consider coming early as the area may become congested with hikers. Also, be aware of weather conditions and flash floods.

Mt. Britton Trail and Tower

Mt Britton rainforest hiking trail in El Yunque National Forest Puerto Rico

  • Distance: 0.8 miles (1.3 km)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

The Mt Britton trail is on a one-way loop road, and starts at the trailhead sign and ascends through the Sierra Palm Forest. You’ll cross through streams, pass over the Forest Service Road 10, and continue for an additional 500 feet.

The trail will lead you upward through the Cloud Forest to the Mount Britton Tower, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Alternatively, from here you can turn left and continue to El Yunque Peak.

On a clear day, the stone tower’s observation deck offers a spectacular view of the forest, the Caribbean sea, and the beautiful coastline.

Note: There is limited parking available along the road. Arrive early to get a spot.

La Coca Trail

  • Distance: 2 miles (3.2 km)

Close to the La Coca Falls, the La Coca trail is considered a more challenging trail than the others. The trail starts at the La Coca Falls and will lead you over gravel paths and a couple of streams. It’s around a 1.5-hour hike one-way.

If you plan on sightseeing and doing waterfall stops, it can take around 4-hours to complete a round trip.

If you’re not keen on making the trail alone, we suggest booking a guided tour to enjoy the beautiful path near La Coca waterfall.

N ote: This trail has become known for people getting lost along the hike, the park service STRONGLY urges you to STAY ON THE TRAIL.

Juan Diego Creek Trail

Juan Diego Creek in El Yunque Puerto Rico

  • Distance : 0.125 mile (0.2 km)
  • Difficulty: Easy

This area provides an easy walk to the waterfalls and natural swimming pools making it one of the best hikes in El Yunque for families. The trail is next to the creek, providing several pools along the way.

Keep in mind, it can get a little crowded along the trail since most tour groups tend to stop here (so try to do this walk early).

Caimitillo Trail

footbridge over waterfalls on caimitillo trail in El Yunque

  • Distance: 0.4 miles (0.6 km)
  • Trail Type: Loop

Another beautiful trail El Yunque hike is the Caimitillo Trail. It’s a popular path because it’s short, picturesque, and includes a picnic area. Along the way, you’ll get to discover giant ferns and sierra palms.

You should hike with care here, as the trail has some steep, concrete stairs followed by wooden steps and a rocky surface. The trek starts from the Sierra Palm Visitor Center on the PR 19. There is parking available adjacent to the center, at the trailhead.

Note: The trail joins with the El Yunque Trail for a short bit before looping back, so pay attention to the signage when the trails split or you will be headed on a long hike to the peak.

Puerto Rico’s southern coast is the island’s best-kept secret

Take it from a guayama native: the caribbean coast is worth exploring from end to end.

The scenery starts to change when you leave the tall hotels and tapón (traffic jam) of San Juan behind.

Head south on Route 52, and you will start seeing the lush green mountains of Cordillera Central. As you approach the southern coast, the dense vegetation transforms into clusters of cactuses and shrubs, painting an arid landscape against the distant view of the Caribbean Sea.

Ranging east to west from the town of Yabucoa to Cabo Rojo, the southern coast of Puerto Rico is rich in culture, food, beaches and nature. But beyond all the tangible attractions, locals say the spirit of hospitality makes the place unique. “Our greatest asset is the people, who make people feel at home,” says Milexys Rosado Romero, the owner of Hacienda Tres Casitas , a farm stay in Cabo Rojo.

I learned this growing up in Guayama, where neighbors traded mangoes for papayas. My parents were always inviting people for coffee, or my dad might arrive home with a bagful of fresh seafood he got from a friend he ran into at the beach.

Unfortunately, no reliable public transport options exist, so renting a car is the best bet to reach the smaller towns and unspoiled beaches. Highway 52 traverses the island from north to south, taking you from San Juan to Guayama in around 90 minutes, depending on traffic, and to Ponce in two hours or less. Highway 2 takes you west to Cabo Rojo and up the western coast, and Route 3 takes you along the eastern coast with scenic ocean views of Patillas and Maunabo.

If traveling during the fall, you may catch surfers in Guardarraya Beach in Patillas. It’s hard to get lost as you can easily find lesser-known beaches via Google Maps, with good cell coverage throughout the region.

Many of the lodgings offered on the southern coast, from the luxury Copamarina Beach Resort to the kid-friendly Combate Beach Resort , have been owned by local families for generations. Farm stays, small inns known as paradors and vacation rentals dominate the accommodations, making for a relaxed scene.

I recommend visiting from Wednesdays to Sundays for a livelier scene and more dining options; earlier in the week is perfect for having the beaches all to yourself.

Low-key beaches in Cabo Rojo

Even the Caribbean Sea beaches on the southern coast of Puerto Rico are in chill mode, more relaxed than their choppy Atlantic Ocean counterparts in the north.

With small waves and shallow waters, Combate Beach, on the southwest corner, is ideal for families. Make it a day-long affair with a passion fruit mojito at Annie’s Place with picturesque sunset views.

For a more rustic beach experience, go to Playa Sucia, one of Puerto Rico’s southernmost beaches. While there, hike the trails leading to El Faro de Cabo Rojo and Puente de Piedra for 360-degree views of a colorful mix of Caribbean blues, sandy-colored rocky enclaves and green mangroves along the coast. Walk a mile and a half north of Playa Sucia, and you will encounter the Salinas de Cabo Rojo, with colorful yellow-shouldered blackbirds flying over the pink salt flats.

Boquerón is a neighborhood known for its stands of local fish, oysters and clams. You can also take a dip at its small sandy strip. The neighborhood is vibrant, with music blaring throughout the many kiosks and beachside restaurants, most specializing in seafood. You don’t have to go far inland to find roasted pork at Camino Los Charros. Rosado also recommends La Catumba Lechonera among the many restaurants that specialize in pork.

Restaurants on the rise in Guayama

“Guayama esta pegao” — in style, according to what I’ve heard from many friends across the island.

A coastal city on the southeastern side, it is known for having a charming plaza (town square) with homes and buildings dating from the 1800s. One of these historical homes houses Gallo Pinto , a restaurant by chef Ángel David Moreno Zayas that has become a destination with dishes like grilled oysters, bone marrow with beef tartare, and fried red snapper.

“I’ve worked in many kitchens in San Juan and the mainland United States, but I wanted to open my restaurant in Guayama,” says Moreno Zayas of his hometown. “It started as a casual place because we were recovering from the pandemic, but now we’ve incorporated more fine-dining elements, and the reception has been spectacular.”

After a feast at Gallo Pinto, one must save room for ice cream at one of Guayama’s classic spots, Rex Cream. Owned by Chinese-Cuban immigrants, the Louke Chang family, it’s a mandatory stop. A scoop of salty-sweet corn ice cream with a generous sprinkle of cinnamon is perfect for a walk along the plaza.

At Pozuelo, a fishermen’s neighborhood beyond the city center, go to El Arcoiris for one of my childhood favorites, the octopus salad with a side of tostones. Or bite into a crispy alcapurria — a fritter made of banana and root vegetables — at El Fogón de Susa as you stroll along the beach.

You can find one of the most impressive wine lists in the south at Prime Market , where local couple Laury Cordero Sabater and Antonio Palau transformed an old home along Route 3 into an ample outdoor patio with a menu specializing in steaks.

Art and culture in Ponce

It’s hard to find Puerto Ricans prouder of their hometown than Ponceños. I’m not disputing their pride, because the city has so much to offer, especially in terms of arts and culture.

“Start with a walking tour of the city center of Ponce to learn about the history of Ponce and gain an orientation of the city,” says Melina Aguilar Colón, the founder of Isla Caribe tours. “One of the sights not to be missed is the Parque de Bombas de Ponce,” she said. Initially built in 1882 for the Exhibition Trade Fair, the Ponce firehouse is a symbol of the city; the distinct red-and-black-striped facade was an inspiration for the Ponce flag.

After walking through the city center, go for cocktails along Paseo de la Salsa Cheo Feliciano, named after the pioneering salsa singer José Feliciano. At El Marlin 107, William Collazo, a big name in Puerto Rico’s cocktail community, mixes drinks with tropical infusions like coconut water, guava and mangoes. On the weekends, expect live music along the street where you can test your salsa skills. For dinner, head to Chef’s Creations, where you catch chef Jorge Rivera cooking over a wood-fired grill in his restaurant’s patio.

Although the city has suffered structural damage during Hurricane Maria in 2017, followed by an earthquake in 2020, Ponce has focused on reconstruction and updates to many of its cultural institutions. The Teatro La Perla, a cultural hub for performance art, is set to reopen in 2025 with plays and musical performances. The Art Museum of Ponce , home of the iconic “Flaming June” by Sir Frederic Leighton (which is currently on loan to the Royal Academy of Arts in London), recently reopened its doors after extensive repairs.

Ponce is also considered the birthplace of plena music, one of the traditional sounds of Puerto Rico. Deeply infused with African beats, plena tells the story of the Puerto Rican people from the early 1900s. You can learn more about plena and other Puerto Rican music like bomba and danza at the Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña, a small museum in the city center.

El Bosque dry forest and bioluminescent bays

According to Aguilar Colón, “everybody knows about El Yunque rainforest, but nobody talks about El Bosque Seco de Guánica, the dry forest on the island’s southwest coast.” I agree.

One of the things that makes Puerto Rico unique is the contrast of ecosystems in a relatively small island. Walking along the trails, you will notice the different varieties of cactuses, Guayacán trees and mangroves as you get closer to the shoreline. Birdwatchers will rejoice with the sights of sparrow hawks, hummingbirds and brown pelicans. The dry forest is one of the island’s hottest places, so ensure you bring plenty of water and sun protection.

Next to Guánica, in the neighboring town of Lajas, there’s another natural phenomenon. La Parguera is home to one of the three bioluminescent bays of Puerto Rico. Because of overpopulation, it’s not as bright as in Vieques, but it’s still worth a trip if you’re in the area.

The local dock offers boat rides, and you can also find kayak tours taking you deeper into the bay for better views. Beyond the bay, the Parguera is known for its bustling scene on the weekends with plenty of bars, restaurants and bands.
