There has been a pro golf tournament played in New Orleans since 1938—Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros count ‘Big Easy’ wins among their title hauls.

But Zurich, the title sponsor of Louisiana’s lone PGA Tour stop is not only the tournament’s longest tenured standard bearer but also put an indelible stamp on the event seven years back to insure for its future success. They decided to break the stroke play monotony of the tour by turning it into a team event. Pros pair up and play four-ball and alternate-shot in two-man teams lending the tourney a unique collegial vibe.

The emerald anniversary edition of the tourney, which tees off this week, features three sets of brothers in action, including Danish twins Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard. And Rory McIlroy has chosen to make his tournament debut here, the four-time major winner will be playing alongside Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry.

“I think players look forward to coming here. It’s the middle of the season and they get to partner with a friend of theirs so it’s a little less stressful, making it more of a casual laidback experience for them,” Luke Farabaugh, the general manager of host venue TPC Louisiana , said. He also feels the change positively impacted the quality of the field the tournament attracts.

The team decision proved to be a hit from the get go. A long weather delay on the Sunday of the 2017 Zurich Classic, the first to institute the new buddy-up format, saw the leading teams playing in the dark by the time they reached the 72 nd hole. The leaders, the tag team of Cam Smith and Jonas Blixt, looked in great shape, up by a stroke and sitting just three feet from the flagstick.

The South Carolina duo of Kevin Kisner/scott brown knew they probably needed to hole out for eagle to force a playoff. Kis, 94-feet out, and relying on the the glow of scoreboard to make out the pin location, summoned a prayer of a chip that darted with alacrity hole-ward bound. It was on line but looked like it had too much zip on it. Rather than blaze by the target as most expected, the ball collided squarely with the pin, dropped in and the crowd went nuts. Smith sunk his birdie putt to cement the deadlock.

Far too dark to start the sudden death stanza, the Smith and Blixt tandem would seize victory on the Monday, but the bigger story was the PGA Tour’s first two-man team event in 36 years was a resounding slam dunk.

Farabaugh has been working at the golf course since it opened in April of 2004, a year ahead of that inaugural Zurich Classic. Back then the New Orleans native was the head golf professional and fondly remembers the opening of the Pete Dye design.

“There isn’t a whole lot of golf in New Orleans, there are three or four private clubs and six public facilities so to have a really nice flagship daily fee place that anybody can play was massive,” Farabaugh said. The previous sixteen iterations of the tourney had been held at English Turn, a private club.

“I think the local public was starving for a great quality, well designed, great conditioned golf course and to be able to fulfill the local demand was great. Over the past 20 years, everyone has had a chance to play it and we have a very good following among players—we do 32,000 rounds a year,” Farabaugh said, adding that 60-65% of those are local rounds.

Such smooth sailing wasn’t always par for the course, months after hosting the first Zurich Classic, Katrina hit. The resulting levee breaches and flooding that had a widespread impact also wreaked havoc on the golf course falling over 2000 trees along and submerging parts of fairways. It would take 10 months for the course to re-open. In the interim, the 2006 Zurich Classic temporarily returned to English Turn and was the first major professional sporting event to be held the city following the devastation. When Hurricane Ida made landfall in 2021, the storm uprooted a 105-foot bald cypress, nicknamed ‘the Shaquille O’Neal tree” that had towered in front of the No. 11 hole.

Since Zurich assumed the title sponsorship in 2005, the tournament has had a $645 million economic impact on the New Orleans community, according to the insurer. In collaboration with the Fore!Kids Foundation, it has raised over $30 million for charitable organizations.

“In 2023, we set a record with over $2.8 million in charitable donations. Over the past two decades, the Classic has generated nearly $2 million for the St. Michael Special School and almost $600,000 for Blessings in a Backpack. These numbers really highlight Zurich's dedication to giving back to the community,” Kristof Terryn, CEO of Zurich North America, said.

This year as part of Zurich’s continuing commitment to sustainability, they will be recycling discarded oyster shells in an effort to protect Louisiana’s shoreline from the threat of coastal erosion. The tournament hopes to eventually receive GEO Certification , an award celebrating sustainability and environmental responsibility for golf tournaments, facilities and developments.

“Year over year we have been upping our game. This isn’t something you can do on your own. You need all your stakeholders, brokers, customers and suppliers that help put together this event,” Alban Laloum, Zurich North America’s chief customer officer, said.

“We’ve said to all of them, this is the year where we make a difference, where we ratchet up not just our words, but our commitment to sustainability and to making the Zurich Classic, probably by 2025, a zero-waste tournament. That’ll be our objective and we should be well on our way after this year.”

For golf fans and foodies who want to do their part restoring oyster reefs, the best way to get their fill of bivalves and other delicious N’awlins cuisine is the Best of the Zurich Classic . The all-inclusive ticket grants access to multiple hospitality areas that will be dishing out offerings from ten area restaurants including Acme Oyster House, Drago’s, Galatoire’s and SoLou.

Farabaugh vouches for Drago’s charbroiled oysters which are bathed in a butter, garlic and parmesan mixture—“They are fantastic!”

If there’s a spirit animal for the event, the honor goes to the gargantuan gators that attendants have sometimes had shoo off fairways. The most famous, Tripod, a massive 12-foot-long, 3-legged alligator, hasn’t been seen on the course in two years, but there are plenty more scaly hided creatures roaming around.

Farabaugh shed light on the phenomenon of the reptiles seemingly seeking an inside the ropes view of the action, stating, “Alligators at this time of year like to sun themselves on the lake banks and occasionally they want to migrate to another pond on the facility.”

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.
