"There is so much to explore in Malaysia, and I'll take you from sharing lunch with a local family in a Kampung Cantik village, to enjoying tea and scones in the emerald valleys of the Cameron Highlands."
Travel Director
Enjoy the fusion of international influences in Malacca
Our Local Specialists will reveal the blend of Malay, British, Dutch and Portuguese influences behind the UNESCO-listed city of Malacca. It was once a vital trading port, and we’ll take you from the Dutch Square to the top of Malacca Hill, then to Kampung Kuli, where you’ll find traditional crafts.
Try local delicacies at Chow Kit Market in Kuala Lumpur
Wander the stalls of Chow Kit Market, the largest wet market in Malaysia. It’s filled with hundreds of shopfronts piled with fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat, and there’s also a dry market where you’ll find clothes and crafts. Our Local Specialists will show you how the locals haggle for their fresh produce.
Visit the Kampung Cantik village
Join a local family for lunch in the village of Kampung Cantik, and take a walk around the village to see the Malacca kampong stilt houses. You’ll discover the friendly culture of the village as you participate in some of their favorite games including silat, an indigenous form of martial arts.
Climb up the rainbow staircase to Batu Caves
The Batu Caves is a popular Tamil shrine and one of Malaysia’s most spectacular sights. You’ll admire a towering golden statue, before ascending 272 rainbow steps up the limestone hill to find a complex of cave temples. We’ll go exploring through the caves, including Temple Cave, where you’ll discover a number of Hindu shrines.
Drive through the Cameron Highlands
We’ll take you on a journey through the magical green valleys and tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands. You’ll see the painted murals and gold Buddha statue of Perak Cave Temple, see the colonial-style town of Ipoh, and enjoy an afternoon tea of scones and local strawberry jam at Tanah Rata.
Our top 5 things to do in Malaysia
Our Malaysia vacation packages take in all the incredible sights of Malaysia, from the cultural fusion of Malacca, to the emerald valleys of the Cameron Highlands.
Orang Asli Museum
The aboriginal Orang Asli people of the Malaysian Peninsula are renowned for their handicrafts and wood carving skills. The Orang Asli Museum in Kuala Lumpur displays their arts and crafts, including the famed wooden carved masks and figures by the Mah Meri and Jah Hut tribes.
Perak Cave Temple
One of the most famous temples in Ipoh, Perak Cave Temple was created in 1926 by a Chinese Buddhist couple. You can climb the staircase into the cave to find a golden Buddha statue surrounded by beautifully painted murals. Continue climbing and you’ll discover a viewpoint with panoramic views across the hills of Ipoh.
Kek Lok Si Temple
The largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, Kek Lok Si Temple towers on a hilltop in Penang. You can explore the temple grounds to find the pagoda, the four heavenly kings pavilion, tranquil gardens and the turtle liberation pond. At the top of the hill, you’ll see the giant statue of the Goddess of Mercy.
Best museums in Malaysia
We’ll reveal the dynamic history of Malaysia through its museums, from hilltop Buddhist temples, to the arts of the Orang Asli people.
The beloved national food of Malaysia, Nasi Lemak is an aromatic dish of rice cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaf. It’s served with spicy sambal and a variety of sides like eggs, beef, chicken curry, cucumber and fried anchovies. Nasi Lemak is commonly eaten at breakfast, although you’ll find it served all day.
Rendang is one of Malaysia's favorite traditional dishes. It’s a fragrant curry served during celebrations and festivals, and the flavors are rich and spicy. Commonly served with beef or chicken, the curry is made from turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, kaffir leaves, tamarind and coconut milk.
Nasi Goreng
Found all over the country, Nasi Goreng is Malaysia’s answer to fried rice. This traditional rice dish is cooked with onions, shallots, chilli, soy sauce, tamarind, nuts and spices and served with your choice of egg, pork, prawns or crispy fried chicken.
Best food in Malaysia
The best Malaysia tour packages take in the country’s diverse cuisine, and we’ll show you all the favorites from fiery Rendang to Nasi Goreng.
What to pack for Malaysia
Adaptor plug
In Malaysia the standard voltage is 240 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type G. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.
Comfortable shoes
From climbing Malacca Hill and hiking through forested mountains, to walking the cobbled streets of George Town, you’ll need a reliable pair of walking shoes.
Light modest clothing
Malaysia is hot and humid for most of the year and you’ll need light and loose clothing. It’s also a highly religious country and it’s best to dress modestly with shoulders and thighs covered.
Sunscreen and repellent
Protect yourself from the natural elements of Malaysia with at least SPF 30 sunscreen and a strong DEET insect repellent.
A small travel umbrella will come in handy in Malaysia, from shielding you from the monsoon rains to blocking out the blazing sunshine.

Adventure Trips
Peninsular Malaysia has easy access to jungle trekking (in Taman Negara), scuba and snorkeling (in Langkawi, Tioman, and Redang), and, at certain times of the year, surfing and wakeboarding (in Cherating), but the states of Sabah and Sarawak are the true adventure seeker's dream. Both states have massive tracts of primary rainforest, unique plants and animals, and fascinating indigenous people. Sarawak claims one of the longest cave systems in the world, parts of which contain evidence of prehistoric civilizations. Sabah has the added attraction of excellent scuba in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Layang Layang, and Sipadan; mountain trekking at Mt. Kinabalu; and white-water rafting at certain times of the year. For the best adventure travel operators, see the recommended tour operators in "Responsible Travel," above.
Travelers who are interested in learning more about Malaysian food should contact foodies 'n' friends (www.foodiesnfriends.com.my) for tours within KL and around the country, as well as master classes, workshops, and even cooking classes for children. One of the best places to learn about the intricacies of Malay cooking is with Shukri Shafie, who conducts hands-on "Cook with Shuk" classes in his traditional-style wooden Malay kampung home on Langkawi island. He also operates a beachside restaurant on Langkawi called The Lighthouse (www.thelighthouse-langkawi.com).
Medical Trips
Malaysia has been attracting medical tourists who come for quality services in a number of state-of-the-art, internationally accredited hospitals staffed by Western-trained physicians. While cost-cutting is typically the main motivation for such trips, other factors include privacy issues and holiday down-time during recuperation.
Tourism Malaysia recommends two organizations, Malaysia Healthcare (www.malaysiahealthcare.com) and MediTravel (www.meditravel.com.my), both of which can help travelers plan their medical needs, link them with specialists appropriate to their cases, and help plan all aspects of travel.
Volunteer & Working Trips
The World Wide Fund for Nature ( WWF-Malaysia, previously the World Wildlife Fund; tel. 03/7803-3772; fax 03/7803-5157; www.wwf.org.my) can provide assistance to those who are seeking to volunteer or take up an internship in Malaysia, or at least direct potential visitors to organizations or locations where this could be possible. Resumes should be forwarded directly to [email protected].

Malaysia Tour Reviews
Malaysia - tour highlights and travel tips.
Malaysia’s rapid growth, multi-lane highways, spectacular theme parks, sprawling malls and glitzy cities might take you away from many of its real charms, but head over to the countryside or simply visit one of those colorful markets in its big cities and you realize that this is a country that is full of culture and traditions. British, Chinese, Indian, Malay, Dutch and Portuguese cultures intertwine to form the basis of Malaysia, and each culture has left its mark on the local customs, traditions, cuisines and architecture.
A trip to Malaysia always feels like you’re visiting two different countries. One that has beautiful colonial-era architecture, enchanting tea plantations and world-class cities and the other that has vast ancient jungles, remote tribes and beautiful granite peaks.
Tour Highlights
- See the capital city from the sky bridge of the Petronas Towers
- Climb your way into the Batu Caves
- Explore the stalls of Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown
- Visit some of the world’s last wild orangutans at Semenggoh Nature Reserve
- Indulge in the bright colours of Kek Lok Si temple
- Hang out with pit vipers at the Snake Temple in Penang
- Walk across the Langkawi Sky Bridge
Travel Tips
- Malaysia is made up of two regions: West or Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. When travelling between them, be mindful of the fact that West and East Malaysia have different cultures, including different dialects and different religions.
- Eating with your hands is encouraged in Malaysia, and it’s rare that you’ll be given a knife with your food.
- Don’t show the soles of your feet or the bottom of your shoes, such as by crossing your legs. It’s considered disrespectful.
- It can be difficult to get reliable, fast internet outside the city of Kuala Lumpur (KL).
- Public transportation in KL is easy to use but frequently runs late, so give yourself plenty of time when travelling.
- Don’t be afraid to try the street food when in Malaysia. Vendors are held to a high standard, particularly when compared to other Asian countries. Keep an eye out for durian (though you’ll probably smell it before you see it!).
Malaysia has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Malaysia before planning your tour.

Trips to Malaysia from the USA
A Malaysia tour offers a comprehensive break from the daily grind. It’s known as one of only 17 so-called megadiverse countries .
Malaysia boasts stunning architecture, landmarks, mosques, temples, and even Legoland. It also features the colorful houses of George Town, incredible bridges, and the extended longhouses of Sarawak. In short, there’s plenty to do and see .
Relax on white-sand beaches, trek up mountains, wander through tea plantations, or weave up wild Bornean rivers. You can also go scuba diving, visit national parks, caves, cultural villages, mangroves , and check out fabulous street art.
Top points of interest in Malaysia
The country is spread out over two distinct landmasses, so most Malaysia tours encompass diverse attractions . Check out a few of the typical destinations below.
Kuala Lumpur
The capital boasts a modern skyline crowned by the iconic 451 meter (1,480 foot) Petronas Towers. A pair of steel and glass skyscrapers look over the largest city in the country. View the city from the observation decks or cross the breathtaking sky bridge.
With a population of around two million, Kuala Lumpur is big, busy, and never boring .
Stroll through the markets and eateries of Chinatown or shop for clothes and collectibles at the Central Market. Visit the Istana Negara or National Palace to see the king’s official residence .
Malaysia features several colonial-era landmarks, like the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and the stunning Sultan Abdul Samad Building , which faces historic Independence Square.
Bako National Park
Bako National Park is one of the smaller national parks in Southeast Asia. It’s around 37 kilometers (23 miles) from Kuching. It contains all types of vegetation, wildlife, and biodiversity and is a favored attraction on many Malaysia trips.
The coastline boasts small bays, sandy beaches, cliffs, trekking trails, boardwalks, and winding paths criss-crossing the park. Jungle streams, waterfalls, and grassy plains provide the perfect habitat for carnivorous flora like pitcher plants, sundews, and bladderworts.
Bako National Park offers sightings of the endangered and endemic proboscis monkey . You can also spot silvered langurs, long-tailed macaques, bearded pigs, plantain squirrels, monitor lizards, and otters.
A 20-minute boat ride takes you to Bako National Park . While the beaches are gorgeous, swimming isn’t advised due to crocodiles.
Located seven miles north of the capital, Batu Caves is the most popular tourist site in the country and a must-see stop on Malaysia tours.
Batu Caves is the focal point of the Tamil festival of Thaipusam in the country. It’s widely visited and admired. It was dedicated to Lord Murugan, and a striking 43 meter (116 foot) gold statue guards the entrance .
Scientists have determined the limestone caves are 400 million years old . They found evidence that indigenous Temuan people used the entrances for shelter. The three main caves feature temples and Hindu shrines.
The “Cat City” is the main commercial and industrial center in the Bornean province of Sarawak. The reason for the feline name is unclear, but locals have added it to the council’s coat of arms, several statues, and even a cat museum.
The capital has many attractions within the city center, like the Sarawak Museum, and provides an excellent base for day trips .
The Semenggoh Wildlife Center is an orangutan rehabilitation center that feeds semi-wild primates twice daily . Only 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the city, it’s an unmissable highlight on most tours in Malaysia.
The city also boasts well-preserved landmarks like the Old Courthouse and Fort Margherita . The stunning Astana Palace was once the official residence of the governor.
Compact and walkable, Kuching has narrow bustling streets with Chinese temples, mosques, and traditional wooden houses. There’s colonial-era architecture and a handful of high rises .
The esplanade on the waterfront offers Malay, Chinese, and Indian delicacies against a backdrop of renovated historical buildings. Cross the pedestrian bridge over the Sarawak river, or take in the enthralling labyrinth of Chinatown.
Malaysia: Off the beaten track
We recommend blending must-see attractions with eclectic Malaysia off-the-beaten-track alternatives . Do some research to find out if there’s anything that you simply can’t miss. Here are some top picks:
- The Tioman and Perhentian Islands on the east coast of the peninsula offer exceptional scuba diving and snorkeling. They also have a decidedly laid-back pace, allowing you to disconnect.
- Sabah , the “land under the wind,” features 8,000 plant species, 600 bird species, and over 200 exotic mammal types.
- Sipadan is an island with epic scuba diving activities near Borneo. You could also climb the 4,095 meter (13,435 foot) Mount Kinabalu, the tallest in SE Asia.
- The Danum Valley Conservation Area boasts epic biodiversity. See rare Bornean orangutans, clouded leopards, gibbons, pygmy elephants, and tiny mouse deer.
- Penang is home to UNESCO-listed capital George Town, a colorful, heady mix of eastern cultures.

With coastlines on the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand , a holiday to Malaysia is sure to be filled with unique experiences, from meeting endangered orangutans to trekking the rainforest of Sarawak or finding a slice of bliss on the remote beaches of Sipadan Island. Kuala Lumpur is the capital city and the perfect starting point for Malaysia tour package . Here, great Hindu temples coexist side by side with mosques and Chinese sanctuaries.
Known for the famous Petronas Towers , these twin skyscrapers were once the highest in the world. Since the days of colonisation, Kuala Lumpur has managed to build its own identity mixing the best of the diversity of its citizens. The same is true of Malacca , one of the oldest cities in Malaysia, whose port has served as an important centre of maritime trade for centuries, bringing in products from India, China and the West.
Today, this small city receives attention for its architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The beauty of Malaysia's beaches and its unspoilt nature can be found in the islands of Langkawi, or in its many national parks such as Taman Negara or Baku National Park, in Borneo , the huge island known for its population of orangutans . Characterised as one of the best regions in the world for scuba diving, the capital, Kuching is a melting-pot metropolis. From here, many excursions depart to explore the dense tropical jungles or to enjoy the rugged beauty of the coastline.
History of Malaysia
Much of the appeal of a trip to Malaysia lies in its amazing diversity, a product of its complex and rich history. Before the arrival of European powers on the Malay Peninsula, Malaysia was home to a number of kingdoms. Hinduism and Buddhism were adopted from neighbouring countries and through contact with merchants and migrants who travelled to the peninsula. The Kingdom of Langkasuka was one of the earliest and most powerful of the Malay kingdoms and endured from the 2th-century to the 15th-century . By the time of the decline of Langkasuka , Islam had arrived in the region and the teachings spread quickly amongst Malays , resulting in the creation of the Malacca Sultanate , centred in the popular city of modern-day Malacca, a must-visit on a Malaysia holiday package . In 1511 Portuguese powers began asserting their dominance in the region, conquering Malacca following news of its wealth. Later, Dutch forces would do the same due to the importance of the city as a centre of trade.
The British Empire followed colonising large parts of Malaysia during the 18th and 19th-centuries . During World War II many major cities and regions were occupied by the Japanese Army which ignited calls for independence and increasing nationalist ideas among Malay people. Peninsula Malaysia unified in 1946 and became known as Malaya , and over the next decade extended its territory to include North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore , although Singapore was expelled shortly after due to political differences. Full independence from the British was declared in 1957 through peaceful diplomacy. Since its independence, Malaysia has grown steadily to become an Asian and global giant.
Nature in Malaysia
World-renowned for its ancient equatorial rainforest, Malaysia is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Aside from rainbow-coloured birdlife and amazing flora, such as the largest flower in the world, the rafflesia, a holiday to Malaysia is likely to focus on the countries most unique inhabitants, such as Proboscis monkeys and orangutans. Malaysia is categorised as a megadiverse county, due to its high number of endemic species. The oldest national park in the country is the huge Taman Negara National Park , situated in the centre of the Malaysian Peninsula.
This rich rainforest environment is one of the best places in the country to get in touch with nature and soak up the amazing biodiversity of the jungle landscapes. On a visit Taman Negara, you can look out for leopards, enjoy scenic canopy walks or cruise along the Tahan River. Another verdant oasis is the leafy Cameron Highlands, located in the hills just outside of bustling Kuala Lumpur.
This is a favourite summer retreat for Malaysian due to its cooler high-altitude climate and visitors can enjoy scenic hiking trails and tours of the abundant tea and strawberry plantations. The Cameron Highlands is also the perfect destination to see the iconic rafflesia flowers, which grows there year-round. Malaysian Borneo is another must-visit for both beach-lovers and animal fans alike. Here you can watch orangutans in the wild, scuba dive in some of the most abundant waters in the world or find your own personal slice of bliss on a pristine white-sand beach.
Culture in Malaysia
Famed for its multi-cultural society, Malaysia is one of the few places on earth where you can smell the sweet aroma of flower garlands placed at Hindu shrines whilst simultaneously listening to the call of prayer emanating from a neighbourhood mosque. A Malaysia package holiday is a unique experience, to say the least. A melting pot of Asian cultures, Malaysia is also known for the indigenous groups of Borneo , such as the Dayak tribes whose unique traditions and practices have captivated the imaginations of travellers and explorers for centuries.
The official language is Malay , although, like all areas of Malaysian culture, language is equally as diverse, with hundreds of languages being spoken in the country, ranging from Mandarin to Tamil , various indigenous languages and English. Traditional Malay arts and music date back to the days of the sultanates, including crafts such as carving and silversmithing. Traditional Malaysian performing arts include intricate shadow puppetry and the traditional joget dance. You cannot pass up the opportunity to watch a joget show when you visit Malaysia.
Experience a whole continent of cultures in one beautiful and abundant country on a tour of Malaysia. From the treetops of the equatorial rainforest, home to endangered orangutans , to the twinkling lights of Kuala Lumpur’s skyline, Malaysia is a cornucopia of unique travel experiences.

Discover Malaysia and Borneo
The essence of malaysia.
Juxtaposing colonial and contemporary architecture in its cosmopolitan capital, Kuala Lumpur, and going wild in Borneo with forest canopy walks, Mt. Kinabalu trekking, and Marine Reserve sea-life, Malaysia is myriad landscapes and a multi-cultural character.
Why choose a tour in Malaysia?
From the buzz of the capital to the Bornean call of the wild , Malaysia is a country of colour, cultures, and contrasts. One day you’re visiting dragon-clad pagodas in a sophisticated city, another watching the mesmerising exodus of millions of bats from their cavern’s mouth, meeting tribal people in a traditional village, or joining the birds in the treetops on a skywalk bridge.
On the mainland peninsula, Kuala Lumpur’s short but eventful evolution is outlined in British colonial buildings, Malay mosques, Chinese temples, soaring skyscrapers, modern air-conditioned malls, and a fabulous mix of food stalls and restaurants.
Most famous for orangutan ‘men of the forest’, Malaysian Borneo stretches across the north of the island, from the western Sarawak region to Sabah at the eastern end.
In Sarawak, Kuching is Borneo’s largest city; multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and celebrating feasts from Chinese New Year to Good Friday and Gawai Day, its riverfront park poised for spectacular sunset views, its colonial avenues teamed with a bazaar of shophouses.
A terrific UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gunung Mulu National Park is a stunning landscape of high peaks and deep gorges, limestone pinnacles, luxuriant rainforest, and phenomenal caves. It’s said that the Sarawak Chamber of the Clearwater caves could hold forty jumbo jets.
Sabah is a small state, with a handful of towns and an abundance of nature, from coral reefs to trekking trails, and tropical flora and fauna.
Its major cities are Sandakan, spreading from its harbour to the hills in a vibrant mix of fishing trawlers, colonial houses, and temple sites; and Kota Kinabalu, the regional capital. Set beside the South China Sea, in a central spot for forays to rainforests, Marine Park islands, and the slopes of Mount Kinabalu, it is famed for its feast of cuisines, Old Town markets, and views from Signal Hill.
In Sabah’s wonderful wilderness, there are Borneo pygmy elephants, langur ‘leaf monkeys’, crocodiles, and colourful bird species in the Sukau rainforest; macaques and elusive proboscis monkeys on the shores of Oxbow Lake; bats and black swiftlets in the Gomantong Caves; and two renowned and remarkable animal sanctuaries.
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre prepares the smallest bears in the world for their return to the wild; and the famous Sepilok Forest Reserve is focused on rescued orangutans, where the youngsters learn their life skills in an outdoor nursery.
When to go on Malaysia holidays
Malaysia’s equatorial climate varies little throughout the year and can be summed-up as hot, humid, and rainy. Average daytime temperatures are around 30°C, rising a few degrees between April and August; and the nights very rarely fall below 20°. There is no dry season, but the tropical rains tend to come in the afternoons, in relatively short but torrential downpours.
Who are Malaysia tours suited to?
A truly unforgettable experience for adventurers, wildlife watchers, bird-spotters, botanists, and the culturally curious, tours in Malaysian Borneo are enchanting, enthralling, and exciting, in equal measure; while the mainland capital, Kuala Lumpur, is a cosmopolitan contrast, with street markets, food stalls, and modern malls tucked between steel and glass towers. Travelling in small-groups, Jules Verne tours get up-close with flora and fauna, to deliver the best experience for like-minded solos, couples, friends, and families.

FAQs about Malaysia Tours
Cash or credit card in malaysia.
Both are OK here. As an advanced country, Malaysia allows tourists to use cash, credit cards or even traveller’s cheques with ease across the country. Still, you’d better have some local money in case you need to use it for expenses, especially in remote areas.
Is the tap water in Malaysia clean to drink?
In major cities and upscale resorts, tap water could be safe to drink. Tap water in remote places is not recommended to use directly unless it’s boiled. What is Malaysia's preferred currency?
Ringgit Malaysia (RM) is the national currency in Malaysia and it will be accepted for all payments here. However, US Dollars are also commonly used in many places, metropolises, or hotels, resorts, and restaurants, etc as well. Other foreign currencies (euro, Singapore dollars, Indonesian rupiah) can be easily changed into Ringgit in banks and authorized money chargers around Malaysia.
Best Malaysia SIM card to buy
There are 4 main mobile network providers in Malaysia: Celcom, Maxis, DiGi, and U Mobile. Best time to visit.
The climate in Malaysia is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures do not fluctuate much and stay in the 30s most of the day, dropping back to the mid to high 20s at night. This makes Malaysia a great place for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing in the sun.
Humidity is higher during the wet season and can be quite oppressive for those not used to it. The wet season changes from coast to coast. From November to April, the wet season hits the east coast of the peninsula and it is dry on the west coast. From May to October it's dry on the east coast and wet on the west.
Some people of Malaysia observe Ramadan. If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it is important to consider that some restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs
Malaysia is a modern melting pot – with Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian and indigenous groups making up the population. With this cultural diversity comes a mix of religions, customs, foods and languages. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism are the main religions practised, although most of the world’s religions are represented somewhere in Malaysia. The Muslim call to prayer, Hindu Festivals and Buddhist ceremonies all coexist with relative peace, with the South-East Asian concept of ‘saving face’ leading most people to strive for harmony.
Regardless of cultural background, elderly people and those of high rank (business people, government officials etc.) are respected greatly. Food plays an important part in daily life, with religious celebrations and holidays characterised by family gatherings and elaborately prepared feasts. Alcohol isn’t a large part of Malaysian society (probably due to the significant Muslim population) but is widely available for purchase and consumption.
Experience Malaysian culture for yourself on our 18day Ultimate Adventure.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food , savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Malaysia’s melting pot of cultural influences is evident in its cuisine.

Geography and environment
Balmy beaches, fish-filled reefs, wild jungles, verdant highlands, relaxed ports, colourful cities and simple villages – Malaysia has it all. Sharing land borders with Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand , Malaysia’s environment is as diverse as its population. From the urban cityscape of Kuala Lumpur and the colonial charm of Penang, to the old-world streets of Melaka, a journey through Malaysia will reveal changing landscapes and evolving environments.
While the large cities are typically built-up, busy and full of buzz, Malaysia’s provincial towns and remote highlands remain delightfully relaxed, with people living simple lives based on agriculture, animal husbandry or other small enterprises. With such a rich range of environments, Malaysia offers beaches and islands for swimming, snorkelling and diving; jungles and highlands for trekking and adventuring; and villages and cities for exploration and relaxation.
Explore this country's breathtaking landscapes on our 8day Highlights of Malaysia tour.
History and government
Early history.
The first recorded historical mentions of Malaysia date back to 7th and 8th-century Sanskrit and Chinese texts. During the following centuries, Malaysia came under the influence and control of Indonesia, Thailand and India – with the accompanying religions, cuisines and languages spreading in the region. In the 16th century, Malaysia came under the influence of Portuguese and Dutch settlers, who increasingly expanded their reach throughout the region to create the Dutch East Indies. Under this influence, Malaysia did well in trade, and flourished as a result of the economic gains of being located on one of the most important trade routes of the time.
Recent history
During the 19th century, the British took control of the Malaysian Peninsula, with the Federated Malay States being officially formed in 1865. Malaysia remained under British rule until Japan invaded during World War II – but once Japan was defeated in 1945, British rule returned and the Federation of Malay was born in 1948. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya formed with Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah to create Malaysia.
Only two years after, Singapore became an independent state, leaving Malaysia in its current form. In the 1970s, Malaysia’s economy grew rapidly until the late 1990s, when the Asian Financial Crisis slowed economic growth in the region. The economy soon recovered, and Malaysia enjoyed the international exposure that came with hosting the 1998 Commonwealth Games (held in Kuala Lumpur). Currently, Malaysian standards of living continue to rise, and Kuala Lumpur has emerged as one of Asia’s premier cities.

1. baba nonya banquet.
The port town of Melaka is known for its unique Baba Nyonya style food. A fusion of Straits Chinese and Malaysian food (with hints of Portuguese, Thai and Indian), chowing down at a Nyonya restaurant is an elaborate affair filled with spicy flavours and tangy sauces.
2. Savour street eats
The streets of Malaysia are filled with locals pushing street carts selling everything from hand-made roti to fresh fruit, delicious satay and steaming bowls of laksa. Malaysian street food offers convenience, variety and flavour on a budget.
3. Taste some tea
Traditional tea is made a little differently in Malaysia. Order ‘teh tarik’ and watch as your condensed-milk tea is frothed and cooled by being poured dramatically between two metal cups, which are held metres apart.
4. Tuck into a hot curry
Beef Rendang is a Malay culinary favourite and is made at home, served at restaurants and prepared for special occasions. This spicy curry is packed with lemongrass, cinnamon, cloves, chilli and melt-in-your-mouth beef — an unforgettable fusion of flavours!

9. Chill out with a coconut
Quench your thirst with a fresh coconut juice. Sold at roadside stalls and on beaches, a straw is simply slipped into a stripped back coconut for a refreshing post-swim pick-me-up.
10. Feast on roti
No visit to Malaysia is complete without encountering roti. Walk down any busy street and the sight of people kneading roti dough at street stalls and shop windows will be common. Often served with lentils, potatoes, onions and rice, roti is an excellent option for vegetarians looking for a meat-free meal.
Malaysia has a shopping experience to suit travellers on all budgets. From dazzling, modern malls and exciting night markets to boutique speciality stores, the opportunity to buy something special is never far away.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

What's the weather like in Malaysia?
Most of Malaysia has a tropical climate with hot, humid weather throughout the year. While the country experiences wet and dry seasons, the line between them is blurred and showers can occur at any time of year. The temperatures in Malaysia are steady, with averages of 23°C to 32°C along the coast and lowlands, and a cooler 14°C to 25°C in the highlands. It’s even colder at higher elevations like Mt Kinabalu in Borneo , which can see sub-zero temperatures at the summit.
Is tipping customary in Malaysia?
Tipping isn’t expected in Malaysia. Some restaurants include a 10% service fee in bills. Feel free to leave a tip at restaurants or with taxi drivers if you’re feeling generous – it will be appreciated.
What is the internet access like in Malaysia?
The internet is easy to access in Malaysia’s large cities, with internet cafes and WiFi hot spots quite common, especially in tourist spots, hotels and hostels. Regional areas and rural communities might have little to no internet access, so be aware of this before heading out of the city.
Can I use my mobile phone while in Malaysia?
Mobile phone coverage is excellent in Malaysia’s large cities; however, it may be patchy in regional areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.
What to wear in Malaysia
Layering is the key to dressing for Malaysia — specifically long, loose, lightweight clothing as it's culturally respectful and will keep you cool in the tropical climate. A light fabric like linen is great for the heat as it absorbs moisture (read: sweat) and dries quickly. You might want to avoid cotton as it takes ages to dry — not ideal for places like Borneo where the humidity can be oppressive! Sportswear is also a good option for hot weather.
What are the toilets like in Malaysia?
Malaysian public toilets are a mix of western-style toilets and squat toilets. Up-market hotels and malls will usually have both options, whereas rural areas will almost certainly only have squat toilets. Be aware that soap and paper aren't always supplied, so be prepared and carry your own.
What will it cost for a…?

- Cup of teh tarik (tea) = 5-12 MYR
- Beer in a bar or pub = 8.50 MYR

Can I drink the water in Malaysia?
It's not recommended to drink the tap water in Malaysia. Filtered water is a better option; try to use a refillable canteen or water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Remember to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit before eating.
Are credit cards accepted widely in Malaysia?
Credit cards are widely accepted by malls, hotels and large restaurants in Malaysia. Smaller guesthouses, shops and cafes may not accept credit cards, so ensure you have enough cash to cover purchases in smaller establishments.
What is ATM access like in Malaysia?
ATMs are easily found in large cities and towns but are far less common in rural and remote areas. Ensure you have enough cash before heading to isolated areas, as ATMs might be sparse.

Malaysia - an Introduction
Malaysia is a land of contrasts. It's a country where East meets West, where glittering skyscrapers are neighbours with houses on stilts and where wildlife laden jungle competes with city life. Even the country is split over two islands, consisting of Peninsula Malaysia and East Malaysia, which is situated on the island of Borneo.
For all its contrasts, one thing about Malaysia is unanimous – visitors love it, from its great food to its great people. Escorted tours to Malaysia will pick out some of the country's highlights, from the island of Penang with its UNESCO World Heritage listed Georgetown, mysterious temples and palm-clad beaches, to the thronging capital of Kuala Lumpar with its soaring twin Petronas Towers.
Due to its location between Thailand and Singapore, Malaysia is often incorporated with its neighbours as part of a longer touring holiday to allow visitors to fully appreciate this part of the world in one go. As well as any internal flights, tours contain an array of different travel methods to help you see the most of this country. The Express Sinaran Seletan train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore is one example, which travels through Malaysia's palm and tree plantations. Return flights from the UK, accommodation and meals, an exciting touring programme complete with tour and local guides and excursions are also included.
Things to do
When visiting Malaysia there are a great number of things to do and see, here are just a few:
Kuala Lumpur No visit to Malaysia would be complete without a visit to its capital known affectionately as KL. Stand in awe as you marvel the awesome skyscrapers that dominate the Malaysian skyline, the Petronas Towers and if you fancy spectacular views, go inside and climb to the Observation Deck or Skybridge where you will be rewarded. Tuck into traditional cuisines from mamak restaurants, admire the variety of mosques and temples in Chinatown, haggle with the locals in the Petaling Street Market or if you're feeling energetic, climb the 272 steps to the Batu Caves!
Kinabalu National Park The biggest attraction here is Mount Kinabalu that towers above the tropical forests of Borneo and just happens to be the tallest mountain in the country but one you can climb without having to have any specialist mountaineering skills – although it can be dangerous in bad weather. The majority of people who visit Kinabalu, climb to the top of Low's Peak. For those who do not wish to climb, there are plenty of walking trails to follow and beautiful gardens to explore in addition to the jungle and Botanical Gardens.
Kelabit Highlands Offers awesome scenery, fantastic walking trails and the indigenous Kelabit people. Most people tend to opt for trekking between longhouses on mountain trails and admiring the beautiful variety of flora and fauna that can be found during these treks.
Penang A beautiful island off the north west coast of the Malaysia Peninsular is known worldwide as the best place to visit for exceptional food that combines influences from a variety of different countries including Malay. Visit the capital Georgetown as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site housing a variety of churches, temples and mosques dating back to the 19 th century. Sunbathe on Batu Ferringhi and relax on its white sandy beaches. Visit the tiny fishing village of Teluk Bahang. Conclude your trip to Penang with a visit to the Kek Lok Si-Temple of Supreme Bliss – one of the largest in south east Asia that is definitely worth a visit.
Kota Bharu Most people find themselves here when they are travelling to Thailand as it is known as the 'Gateway to Thailand'. If you explore a little further, you will come across a bustling city overflowing with Malay culture. If you happen to be a culture vulture, there's a variety of royal palaces, museums and markets that will certainly be of interest if you would like to feature an element of traditional Malaysia in your tour.

Tips & Advice
One of the benefits of travelling in an escorted group is that you'll be in good hands for the duration of your trip. However, to help you have an enjoyable holiday in Malaysia, take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO):
Health and Travel Insurance Prior to leaving the UK it is always wise to contact your GP to check whether you need any vaccinations or preventative medication when travelling to Malaysia.
It is important that you have arrange adequate health insurance as the cost of both Government and Private hospitals in Malaysia can be expensive. It is also wise to have access to funds which can be used to cover the cost of medical treatment and in extreme cases, medical repatriation.
If you need to contact the emergency services, simply dial 999 or 112 from a mobile and ask for the ambulance service. If you do get referred to medical facilities for treatment don't forget to advise your insurance company.
Crime As you would when travelling in any country, it is important to take sensible precautions to protect yourself from crime. Common sense prevails; avoid carrying valuables where possible and never open your hotel room door to strangers late at night. Card fraud is widespread so take care when using your card.
Bag snatching can be common, so wear bags across your body facing away from the road to avoid unwanted attention from thieves on motorbikes. If your bag is snatched, let go of the bag - it can be more dangerous to hold on.
When using taxis always unload luggage as soon as you get out to avoid the driver leaving with your luggage.
Never accept a drink from a stranger and always look after your drink at all times. Do not become involved in gambling scams.
Local Laws and Customs Malaysia consists of many diverse cultures, however predominantly it is an Islamic country. When visiting it is important to respect all laws and customs, especially during Ramadan. Dress sensibly by covering shoulders and legs (women especially), especially when visiting places of worship.
Any type of drug offence (be it possession, use of trafficking) are taken extremely seriously and trafficking of drugs can even result in the death penalty. On arrival into Malaysia you may be asked for a urine sample if you are suspected to have been using drugs – a positive test could mean being deported.
Needless to say that carrying unlicensed firearms or ammunition into Malaysia can also result in the death penalty.
If you're a same-sex couple, it's also worth noting that same-sex public displays of affection or otherwise are illegal in Malaysia.
Entry Requirements British nationals will not need a visa to enter Malaysia and you can stay for 3 months from the date of arrival. Stays for longer or for non-tourist purposes will need to be obtained from the Malaysian Diplomatic Mission, before leaving the UK.
Passports should be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter into Malaysia.
Emergency Travel Documents (ETD) are accepted for entry and exit from Malaysia as well as for airside transit.
In Malaysia being dual nationality isn't recognised and you can be refused entry if you are found to be holding two passports. If in any doubts check before booking.
Any other nationality looking to visit Malaysia must contact the local embassy to check visa requirements.
Tourist Offices For more information about visiting Malaysia, you can see the tourist board website at tourism.gov.my

Private and Luxury Tours of Malaysia
If you are thinking about where to go next, our experts recommend visiting Malaysia in 2024 . Wandering the capital Kuala Lumpur on a luxury tour of Malaysia, you can see remnants of the old KL in Chinatown’s shophouse-lined streets. The colonial buildings of Merdeka Square are in stark contrast to the Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest twin buildings. Yet both represent Malaysia—the traditional and the modern, the indigenous and the colonial.
English afternoon tea with scones, Malaysian laksa and roti canai, and endless rounds of satay fresh off the grill, are all popular. In Penang , colonial Georgetown’s Lorong Baru food hawker zone is awash with everything from Chinese favorite congee to Indian-inspired nasi kandar. If you want to scratch beneath the surface to understand the Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, as well as those of indigenous tribes, we can help you. Enchanting Travels experts are proficient at creating luxury travel itineraries that take guests under and over, above and beyond, to explore this country’s cultural mosaic.
Island-hopping is just one the many thrills of Malaysia’s Langkawi archipelago. Revel in days filled with golden sunsets and pristine sand beaches, and sipping exotic cocktails at beachfront cafés. You’ll get majestic aerial views from the Sky Bridge, cable car, and even from a zip line on the eco-canopy tour of the rainforest. Water sports facilities abound, to suit every level of challenge and fitness.
Malaysia has outstanding snorkeling and diving opportunities. World-famous for serious diving enthusiasts is Sipadan, across from peninsular Malaysia in the Celebes Sea, just off Malaysian Borneo, where the last remaining orangutans of the world live. Located by the Kinabatangan River, visit the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation center to meet these shaggy-haired creatures. Those doleful eyes never fail to capture the hearts of those who encounter them.
From Mount Kinabalu to the Batu Caves, Malaysia is a multi-faceted land. Cool, fragrant air greets you in the Cameron Highlands, full of tea plantations and strawberry farms. At Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak the underground limestone cave systems, including one of the longest networks of caves in the world, are great for an adventurous detour.

Kuala Lumpur
Penang is a coastal slice of Malaysia that lies right by the Strait of Malacca. It is perhaps one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse travel destinations on the face of this earth.
Langkawi, the Jewel of the Malay state of Kedah, is all that you have imagined a tropical paradise to be – and so much more!
Kuching is Sarawak’s beautiful capital city. Like most other Malaysian cities, it is a delightful mix of the traditional, the colonial and the modern.
Sandakan, set by the Bay of Sandakan, is a delightful blend of Malaysia’s colonial past and lush tropical beauty.
Sukau is a tiny fishing village and a rare pearl situated off the usual tourist track. Tucked along the Kinabatangan River, Sukau offers glimpses of Borneo’s rainforests and swampy marshland.
