Laos Bible Mission Trip
There are many highlights for this trip including witnessing the Billy Graham Evangelistic Crusade, hearing testimonies of the people steadfast faith despite persecution and trials etc. Our family has indeed been much blessed. Thanks too for the abundant love and grace shown to one another especially patience and care to our son who is the only kid in the group. Suffice to say, that we were surrounded with much joy, laughter, fun and nice food too throughout this trip. It was a well-organised trip and all thumbs up to Ibex.
This experience has been amazing. It has strengthened my faith as God has once again shown me how He can make everything work together. God is not someone I can see face to face, but I can see His works. I can hear Him. I can feel Him. Even when I cannot “feel” Him sometimes, I know He is there with me, always. Truly, I can’t deny that God is with me, even when I can’t see beyond my doubt. Thank you Lord for opening my eyes to see You through ways I could not have imagined.
For myself, I think God has a purpose for sending us there because God wants to tell the Khmer people that He loves them and He will not forget them. My question is that will you make a change in their lives today? Will you bring the good news to them or stay at home and watch Fox movies? For me is a resounding YES. I promise I will go to Cambodia to do God’s work. What about you?

Faiths & Festivals
Singapore is often described as a cultural melting pot. Nothing testifies to this more than the wide array of festivals that celebrate many of its 10 official religions. In fact, a 2014 analysis found Singapore to be the world’s most religiously diverse nation.
Great care is taken to ensure that an equal number of public holidays are given for the religions with the largest followings — Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam.
Although they make up a small percentage of Singapore’s population, the Jewish community has made a profound impression on our history. Most notably, our first Chief Minister David Marshall was the son of Iraqi Jews who came here from Baghdad in the early 20th century. We also have many other prominent Jewish figures who emigrated to Singapore from many parts of the world such as Isaac Belilios, after whom a street in Little India is named, plus Manasseh Meyer, David Elias, Jacob Ballas, Ezekiel Manasseh, and many more.
Today their heritage and contribution can be found in many of our beautiful buildings and other places. Not the least of which is our two magnificent synagogues, but also places like Eden Hall, the Jacob Ballas children’s garden in the Botanic Gardens, and the David Elias building in the old Mahallah district.
One of the most vibrant, colourful, and memorable temple festivals you will ever witness, Thaipusam is a thanks-giving and penance-seeking religious event for Tamilian Hindus. In this amazing form of worship, devotees pierce their bodies with long metal skewers and carry burdens of 40 kg for four kilometres, all the while dancing to rhythmic chants.
Celebrated in only a few countries, Thaipusam in Singapore differs from the festival in India, where Hindus from the state of Tamil Nadu carry heavy milk pots — and not the cumbersome kavadis carried here. The procession is a photographer’s paradise where light, colour and frenzy come together.
The Monkey God’s Festival falls on the 16th day of the Eighth Lunar month. In Singapore, there are a number of temples dedicated to this main character from Chinese literary classics. We visit the oldest Monkey God Temple in Singapore to follow the God’s procession with his local devotees. This is accompanied by lion dancing, clashing cymbals, opera singing and banging drums — a truly unforgettable experience.
The late-in-the-year festival of lights, also pronounced Diwali, is a colorful celebration commemorating the triumph of light over darkness, or good over evil, as exemplified in the Indian classic story, the Ramayana.
During this period, the streets of Little India are illuminated with colourful decorations, special markets are set up, and people of all backgrounds enjoy the fun associated with new clothes, family time, and heaps of delicious foods.
Also called the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year is familiar to people the world over with its many rituals. A 15-day celebration starts on the New Moon and ends with the Full Moon. Each year is attributed to one of 12 animals in the zodiac and decorations in that animal’s image festoon the streets of Chinatown.
From the glitzy decorations of Orchard Road’s shopping area to the beautifully decorated churches, Christmas is a widely celebrated festival in Singapore. To create the wintry feel associated with this time of the year, we even have regular daily snowfalls at some of the shopping malls.
Christianity was brought to Asia by a variety of European missionaries and today a large percentage of Singapore’s population is Christian — as of 2015, approximately 19%.
Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar and our annual walking tour meanders around the main beautifully-restored downtown churches to see how it is celebrated here.

All you need to know about Religious Travel
What should i wear when visiting a religious place.
Every religion has different requirements on what to wear when visiting a sacred site, so it's always best to ask your travel guide about the appropriate dress. However, a good general rule is to always dress modestly. Both men and women should wear long skirts or trousers covering the knees and tops covering the shoulders and chest. Some Islamic and Jewish religious sites, such as mosques, will require you to cover your hair, while Buddhist temples require you to take off your shoes.
What is the best time to visit the Holy Land?
Israel, also known as the Holy Land, is at its best in spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) when the temperatures are pleasantly warm, averaging around 26°C. Summer (June to August) heats up to an average of 32°C during the day, perfect for hitting the beach in Tel Aviv. The winter months (November to March) are cold and rainy, averaging around 15°C, and Jerusalem even sees occasional snowfall.
What is the most visited religious place in the world?
The Hindu Venkateswara Temple in India is said to be the most-visited religious place in the world, with around 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims visiting the temple every day. The renowned Sensoji Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, is another big contender, with around 30 million visitors every year.
Why is religious tourism important?
Religious tourism is one of the oldest and most special forms of travel, as pilgrims have travelled to pay homage to sacred places and icons for millennia. Religious tourism is now more important than ever as it helps to protect and conserve ancient holy sites, cultural treasures and spiritual traditions.

Pope Francis to visit Singapore from Sept 11 to 13
SINGAPORE - Pope Francis will visit Singapore from Sept 11 to 13, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore confirmed on April 12.
The Pope will also celebrate mass, which is tentatively set to take place on Sept 12.
In a statement on its website, the Archdiocese said it was sharing the news of the Pope’s visit, which was confirmed by The Holy See, with great “jubilation and thanksgiving”.
Cardinal William Goh, the Archbishop of Singapore, said of the visit: “It has been 38 years since we had a visit from the Vicar of Christ to Singapore, when Pope St John Paul II honoured us with a visit on 20 November 1986.
“It is my hope that this visit of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, will bring renewed fervour to all Catholics in Singapore, uniting them in faith and mission, especially in these most challenging of times.”
The Archdiocese statement added: “As we prepare for His Holiness’ visit, let us, as a community, pray for the continued health and safety of the Holy Father and ask the Lord to grant us a truly meaningful and grace-filled visit.”
Earlier on April 2, a spokesman for Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “Singapore welcomes a visit by Pope Francis.”
The tour, which had been earlier scheduled for August, will mark only the second papal visit to Singapore.
The Singapore Government, the Holy See and local church officials are discussing details of Pope Francis’ visit.
More information about the visit will be released progressively to the public at www.popefrancis2024.sg
There are about 243,000 Roman Catholics in Singapore, according to the 2020 census.
Pope Francis’ visit to Singapore is part of a 12-day tour of the Asia-Pacific region. He will also visit Jakarta in Indonesia from Sept 3 to 6, Port Moresby and Vanimo in Papua New Guinea from Sept 6 to 9, and Dili in Timor-Leste from Sept 9 to 11, according to the Vatican.
Reports of an Asia-Pacific tour first appeared in January in two Catholic media outlets: America and EWTN Vatican.
On March 31, Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas confirmed that Pope Francis would visit Indonesia on Sept 3.
Outgoing Indonesian President Joko Widodo reportedly invited the pontiff to visit Indonesia – which has the world’s largest Muslim population, numbering about 242 million – in June 2022, as part of efforts to promote religious tolerance.
The last papal visit to Singapore was almost 40 years ago, when the late Pope John Paul II drew thousands of Roman Catholics during a brief stopover in 1986, which lasted just five hours.
In January 2022, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong was granted a brief audience with Pope Francis during a working visit to the Vatican City. His visit was to reaffirm bilateral ties with the city-state and came a month after the Roman Catholic Church marked its 200th anniversary in Singapore.

Heritage trail for families traces the footprints of Christian pioneers in Singapore
Tricia Tan // September 28, 2021 , 9:36 pm
Organisers of the Christian heritage trail, Elvin and Esther Foong (left), present a certificate to a participating family, against the backdrop of St Andrew's Cathedral. All photos by Tricia Tan unless otherwise stated.
It’s 8.30am on a Saturday.
A colourful mosaic of five socially-distanced families wend their way from Bugis to Mount Sophia and into the heart of Singapore’s historic Civic District.
Through all 13 landmarks along the 2.8km-long trail we visit, testimonies and stories of Christian pioneers in Singapore abound.
This trail immerses us in the lives and minds of the Christian pioneers who served so faithfully and well.
“What happened in 1965?” asks Esther Foong , one of our three guides, as she stoops down to listen to a whispered answer from a young participant.
“Right, Singapore became a nation!” says Esther, who leads the group with her husband, Elvin Foong.
The heritage trail is the one of the latest efforts in the Foongs’ mission through their company, The Treasure Box SG , to build faith-filled families in Singapore via devotions and other activities. Esther and Elvin’s warmth is as palpable in person as it is on-screen during their weekly online Sunday Children’s service.
But the roots of Singapore’s Christian heritage go back to missionaries who first reached our shores long before 1965.
One girl, age six, reads out an excerpt about Brother Joseph McNally from Ireland, founder of St Patrick’s Arts Centre (now known as the Lasalle College of the Arts) in Singapore. Most of the children on this particular walk are between the ages of five and nine .
Esther points to the various sites in the colourful workbook participants are given. Names like Sophia Blackmore, Maria Dyer, Brother Joseph McNally and many others grace its pages.
Planting the seeds of faith
“The stories we will be sharing today are about early pioneers who laid the foundation of our faith in Singapore,” says Lim Chee Peng, another guide for the heritage trail. The polytechnic lecturer and consultant has been leading various Christian heritage trails since 2017.
In June, he worked with the Foongs to initiate trails for children. The particular one we are on focuses on the work of missionaries in the 19th century.
The Armenian Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, the oldest Christian church in Singapore – one of 13 historical sites visited on the heritage trail.
At the Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church, for instance, Chee Peng speaks of the journey of India-born British missionary Reverend Benjamin Keasberry in establishing in 1843, what was then known as the Malay Mission Chapel.
At the cheery Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) building – where I recall fond memories of my weekly dance classes – Chee Peng pauses. There are gasps from the young participants as he informs us gravely that the building was taken over by the Kempeitai, the Japanese military police, during the Japanese occupation from 1942 till 1945. YMCA resumed its outreach after the occupation.
The two Sophias
While the word “heritage” might call to mind stuffy museums and archaic scripts, the Family Day Out heritage trail is rife with thoughtful stories.
At Sophia Road, the green road sign takes on a new shade for me as I learn of not one, but two incredible Sophias.
“Their gospel was a social gospel because they met the needs of our community.”
Australian missionary Sophia Blackmore , defying conventional wisdom at the time, arrived at the shores of Singapore at the tender age of 30. She opened a school for Tamil girls, which in time became known as Methodist Girls’ School (MGS).
Sophia Road was where MGS stood from around 1925 till 1992.
The second Sophia is no less impressive.
British missionary Sophia Cooke , the group is told, arrived in 1853 to become the principal of what is now St Margaret’s School. (In its early days, the school served as a boarding house for poor, abandoned or abused Chinese girls.)
Aptly, “Sophia” means “divine wisdom” in Greek.
(There are a few more Sophias connected with the area. It is generally accepted that Mount Sophia was named after Sophia Hull , the second wife of Sir Stamford Raffles).
Lessons for girls and more
Clearly, this heritage trail is not just for children. Despite being a university student, I find myself in wonder at the heady combination of narrative, place and the childlike joy of the group.
At this point, we reach an idyllic spot that barely looks like Singapore. The road is neatly lined by rows of terrace houses and an equally linear progression of trees.
A young participant holds up a historical image of the old St Margaret’s School as Chee Peng shares the history behind the institution.
The children thread tiny fingers through a honeycombed fence, peering at the building within.
We are outside St Margaret’s Secondary School, and I find I do not think of its founder, Maria Dyer from a Wikipedia article, but Dyer in the flesh.
Chee Peng, our guide, shares the story of Dyer who came from England to Penang, Malacca and subsequently Singapore. I imagine the young missionary and educator speaking in halting Hokkien to her first Singapore students at what was then known as the Chinese Girls’ School. (It took in girls who were orphans or had fallen victim to child slavery).
In a time when the education of women was considered unimportant, how did she find the faith to push on?
Participants descending from the tranquil estate of Sophia Road, down through a tunnel of seemingly endless steps, and out the other side into the bustling present of The Cathay cinema. Photo courtesy of Esther Foong.
Perhaps she took long walks of prayer around the estate, petitioning God for the beautiful school compound we see today, or held on in private devotions amidst the trees.
We might never know, but this trail immerses us in the lives and minds of the Christian pioneers who served so faithfully and well.
It reminded me of what it means to live life on mission for God.
Love God, love people
While the missionaries came to Singapore to “plant churches”, Esther shares that actually, they did not come with that purpose per se.
“All of them came with just one simple mission – to love God, love people,” she says.
The former chapel of Trinity Theological College in the background (and rendered in the trail map, in the foreground) was designed with the Chinese Character “人” (meaning people) in mind. At each stop we make, the children eagerly stick the gold stars against each landmark on the trail map.
What else could prompt these young men and women to spend their prime in a then backwater third-world nation?
French priest Father Jean-Marie Beurel , at just 26, founded St John’s School (later renamed St Joseph’s Institution) as a free school with support from the public. Sophia Blackmore was 30 when she arrived in Singapore. Maria Dyer, 39.
“All of them came with just one simple mission – to love God, love people.”
They gave of their best years to shepherd small groups of children and youth.
Dyer’s first cohort was a humble group of 19 girls, half the size of a typical class these days.
“All the great work we see was birthed from that simple mission,” says Esther. It is something she hopes to impress on the kids, too.
No monopoly on stories
Around halfway through the 2.5 hour trail, we reach the campus of the Singapore Management University. On the edge of the greenery overlooking the Singapore Art Museum, Esther and Elvin lead the families through a rousing game of Kahoot.
Opposite the old St Joseph’s Institution, Esther and Elvin lead the families through a Kahoot quiz.
There’s laughter and furled eyebrows as the kids jostle for first place. (Pop quiz: What’s the Methodist Girl’s School mission? Find the answer later in this article.)
Each family on the trail received a pack that included an activity trail book and and tote bag. They were designed an artistically-gifted master’s student at Singapore Bible College who is currently interning with The Treasure Box. Photo courtesy of The Treasure Box.
I catch up with Chee Peng, who guides Christian heritage trails as a passion project.
I ask him about his favourite part of the Christian trails he’s run since 2019.
“Nobody has a monopoly on all the stories. As more and more people come on the heritage trails, we ourselves learn more,” he says.
Passing on memories
Throughout the trail, Chee Peng often calls on the families to share their memories of the different sites we visit.
At the former St Joseph’s Institution, now the Singapore Art Museum, one father shares animatedly about how the chapel sessions helped build his spiritual foundation early on in life.
At Mount Sophia, Chee Peng shares about Methodist Girl School, and prompts a young girl to recite her school’s motto: “To master, to grow, to serve”.
Chee Peng shares about the founding of the 1st Singapore Company of The Boys’ Brigade at the Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church.
As the rapid-fire Kahoot questions draw to a close, the families stay huddled together on the lush greenery.
The children, waving the same colourful maps in hand, buzz about, gesturing to doodles in their heritage workbook.
Weaved together with engaging stories from the guides, the participation of the many young children and seeing the buildings in the flesh, I find myself wishing for similar excursions when I was kid.
A foundation of good
While Esther and Elvin are sanitising the audio sets (lent to families to hear what the guides are saying) for the afternoon session, I catch up with them as the families peter off.
“We want to see faith at home, built on a foundation of good. We want to see children and families growing closer to God, and to each other,” says Esther Foong of initiatives by The Treasure Box, which include this heritage trail. Photo courtesy of The Treasure Box.
The genesis of this family heritage trail began with Elvin and Esther’s leap of faith in 2018, when they simultaneously left stable jobs to focus on The Treasure Box full-time, on a word from God.
Indeed, this trust in the Lord’s goodness permeates both their lives and the thousands of families God has purposed them to reach out to.
“This is our mission ground”, Esther tells me. “We want to see faith at home, built on a foundation of good. We want to see children and families growing closer to God, and to each other.”
Sowing into the next generation
I think back to all the small gestures throughout the trail. Among them, a mother guiding her fearful son down the 100 steep steps from Mt Sophia to The Cathay, the father smiling at his son while sharing his journey of faith in ACSI.
“We want the children to think: ‘I can do something for the nation, for our people, for God.’”
In the microcosm of a morning, one glimpses the gears of this mission moving.
“It’s so easy to live on the surface. There’s just so much history behind these buildings, and we can enjoy what we have today because of the work of our pioneers,” says Elvin gesturing to the imposing St Andrew’s Cathedral, the oldest site of Anglican worship in Singapore.
“We want the children to come for the trail and think: ‘I can do something for the nation, for our people, for God,’” he says.
And if the gap-toothed grins of the children at the unofficial closing ceremony of the walk are of any indication, we can be sure the seeds sown during this journey have fallen on good ground.
A social gospel
Even a week after the trail, curiosity lingers.
I find myself tracing the genealogy of my own convent primary school on Google to find yet another miracle of missionaries: St Anthony’s Canossian Primary School has her roots in the ministry of the Canossian sisters who arrived on the shores of Singapore in 1894.
The writer’s own scrawled learnings from the trail.
Seeing the precious memories of my early school years in a new light, I have newfound gratitude for the faithful men and women of God who dedicated themselves to a new home in a foreign land.
I recall the words of Joseph Chean , director of Youth With A Mission Singapore : “And when they came, their gospel was not just a churchy gospel, their gospel was a social gospel because they met the needs of our community.”
And, as a fruit of this “social gospel”, a generation of youth like myself have the privilege of education and fond memories to treasure in this life and beyond.
A beautiful heritage
Recalling the medley of buildings and stories and people during the trail, I can’t help but be reminded of Psalms 16:6: “The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me”.
The word “beautiful” in Hebrew is sapar (שָׁפַר), which one translation renders “to shine forth as the dawn”.
In truth, stories of heritage are being written every day.
Everyone’s discovery of our shared national genealogy is unique, a story in and of itself.
What a wonderful experience it was on the trail, to be surrounded by a shining cloud of witnesses both past and present, to enjoy the beauty of heritage in motion, lovingly orchestrated by God.
The next Family Day Out Christian heritage trail is scheduled for November 20, 2021 (Covid-19 guidelines permitting). Contact The Treasure Box SG here . Churches may also write in to enquire.
Heritage trails run by Lim Chee Peng are currently on hold. They will resume when the Covid-19 situation improves. Click here to stay updated. The trail can be tailored for various age groups and audiences; email [email protected] for information.

SINGAPORE: Pope Francis will visit Singapore from Sep 11 to 13, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore said on Friday (Apr 12), confirming earlier reports of a likely trip this year.
"Details of the visit are still being discussed between the Singapore government, the Holy See and local church officials. More information about the papal visit will be released progressively in due course," said the archdiocese.
Singapore is the last leg of his Asia tour.
He will be in Indonesia from Sep 3 to 6, Papua New Guinea from Sep 6 to 9 and Timor-Leste from Sep 9 to 11, the Vatican said in a statement.
Vietnam, which Vatican officials had suggested as a possible destination, was not mentioned.
The last time a pope visited Singapore was in 1986 when John Paul II made a five-hour stop as part of his Asia-Pacific tour that included Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia.
Thousands attended a papal mass at the National Stadium during that visit.
"It has been 38 years since we had a visit from the Vicar of Christ to Singapore, when Pope St John Paul II honoured us with a visit on Nov 20, 1986," said Cardinal William Goh, the archbishop of Singapore.
"It is my hope that this visit of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, will bring renewed fervour to all Catholics in Singapore, uniting them in faith and mission, especially in these most challenging of times."
Apart from official engagements, Pope Francis is expected to be at a Eucharistic celebration, "likely" on Sep 12, said the archdiocese.
"As we prepare for His Holiness’ visit, let us, as a community, pray for the continued health and safety of the Holy Father and ask the Lord to grant us a truly meaningful and grace-filled visit," it added.
Pope Francis to visit Indonesia in September
The visit by Pope Francis, 87, has been on the cards for months, but his health had raised questions about whether it would go ahead.
He uses a wheelchair and suffered health issues in recent years, from knee pain to surgery for a hernia and on his colon.
Known for his work ethic, the Pope never takes holidays but has been forced to make concessions due to his age and health, including cancelling a trip to UN climate talks in Dubai last year.
The September trip will represent a major physical challenge, involving more than 30 hours of flight as well as a series of meetings and masses.
It will also be the longest trip for the Argentine since he became head of the worldwide Catholic Church in 2013.
Pope Francis had been due to visit Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Indonesia in September 2020 but the trip was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Indonesia had already announced the Pope's visit last month, describing it as a "special gift" for the country's Catholics.
Pope Francis has also announced plans to visit Belgium this year, with a possible trip home to Argentina.
He has three coming trips planned within Italy, the first of which will be to Venice on Apr 28.
