Gin

Gin tasting: holidays to excite your palate

Our luxury gin tours will take you on a journey to some of the most exclusive distilleries in the industry, giving you special insight into the world of gin making.

Join Wine Paths on a gin-making tour to experience one of Europe’s finest spirits. Dating back centuries, this time-honoured drink is now undergoing a remarkable revival. In the midst of the ‘ginaissance’, distillery numbers boom across the continent. And there are so many fantastic new gins – from fruit flavoured to dry – to discover while on tour with us.

Although consumed everywhere around the world, some countries such as England or Scotland, are undergoing huge growth in the industry. The gin craze shows no sign of slowing down, leading to the industry getting more creative with flavours, making it the perfect time to explore the different gin varieties on one of our luxury tours .

Learn about the history of gin making

The Dutch started producing ‘genever’ in the 1600s and during this time there were hundreds of distilleries in the capital alone. But it’s very likely that this spirit dates back even further, with potential references to genever flavoured alcohol being drunk in the Middle Ages.

Originally produced for medicinal purposes, genever was believed to cure a number of illnesses. It was later given to British soldiers fighting on Dutch land, and this was where the term “Dutch courage” came from. The popularity stretched across the English Channel and by the late 17th Century, what we know as ‘gin’ had been developed by the English and quickly became a British staple. Our tours will journey you to some of the most significant locations in the UK, including historic distilleries and some of the more popular craft gin distilleries that are challenging the market.

Made with approximately 40% alcohol by volume or greater, gin is distilled from grain and primarily flavoured with juniper berries. These berries are tart and bitter and are often compared to pine or citrus. But today, the flavour profiles extend far beyond classic juniper, with artisan gin makers popping up across Europe and experimenting with various fruits, herbs, flowers and ingredients. There’s no better time to join Wine Paths on an exclusive tour, and the flavour options will truly astound you.

Where to find the best gin distilleries

Although inspired by the medicines of Holland, Britain is the beating heart of the global gin industry. There are amazing gin makers located across the UK, and the varieties of gin are vast, making tastings all the more interesting. Many people start off with the classic London Dry, such as Tanqueray or there's the classic London Dry, such as Tanqueray or Sipsmith.

There’s also the very famous Plymouth Gin, which is less dry due to a higher proportion of root ingredients added for an earthier taste. Old Tom Gin is much sweeter than normal gin and can be found in many distilleries in Scotland. When it comes to craft gin and experimental gin, London offers some of the best tours and tasting experiences around.

Other countries where gin production is on the increase are Spain, Belgium, Ireland, Canada and the United States. Surprisingly, India and The Philippines also have very large gin markets, showing that this very British spirit is growing in popularity around the world. But if you want access to the finest distilleries, with expert-led tasting experiences, we recommend booking one of our gin tours to the UK.

Join us on a luxury gin tour in the UK

There’s so much demand for British gin right now, making it the perfect time to book a tasting holiday. Internationally, every three out of four bottles of gin imported in the world comes from Britain. Not only do our tasting holidays give you access to the finest distilleries where you’ll meet expert distillers and industry leaders, but you’ll also get to take in the rich and fascinating history of this unique island nation.

Great Britain is also home to some of the best Michelin Star restaurants in Europe, with the biggest concentration of esteemed chefs in the capital and surrounding cities. You can delve into the magical world of gin flavours and gastronomy, with perfect food pairings, tasting menus and authentic dishes made from local ingredients. For gin and fine dining fans, it doesn’t get much better than our luxury gin tours.

Interesting facts about gin

Gin is one of the most popular spirits in the world, but it still remains a mystery to many. Here are some interesting facts:

  • The name “gin” is a shortened form of the older English word “genever”, which is related to the Dutch word “jenever” and the French word “genièvre”. All of these name variations come from the Latin word “juniperus” for juniper.
  • There are several methods of producing gin, which gives the spirit group such great variety. For instance, London Dry gin gets it juniper flavour from neutral spirits and is re-distilled with natural flavouring ingredients such as botanicals. Compound Gin, on the other hand, is made by adding flavouring substances to a neutral spirit with no re-distillation. The first-ever style is the Dutch Genever style, which starts with a malted grain mash (like whiskey) with a process that is similar to barrel-ageing. English gins overall use much quicker methods, with some gins taking no longer than one day.
  • There are many ways to enjoy gin in the UK, including with ice and tonic and various ingredients ranging from lemon and lime to cucumber slices and herbs such as rosemary. Gin is also one of the most popular spirits for cocktails.

Suggestions

gin tour and tasting

Is gin only a summer drink?

Gin may have historically developed a reputation as being a summer beverage, but gin is now becoming a drinks cabinet staple that delights all year round. There are many winter gins that can be combined in cocktails. So there’s no bad time to enjoy a gin tour in the UK.

What are the most popular gin brands in the world?

The most popular gin brands include Tanqueray, Beefeater London Dry Gin, Hendrick’s Gin, Gordon’s, Plymouth Gin, Bombay Sapphire, Martin Miller's and Aviation Gin. But this barely scratches the surface of the industry. There are thousands of brands across the UK and Europe, including delightful craft gins of every style and flavor.

How does gin tasting compare to vodka tasting?

The diversity of gin far outweighs that of vodka and other spirits. Each bottle of gin is truly unique, making tasting tours an exciting adventure on the palate. The array of flavors and botanicals used in gin production means drinkers will never get bored, and everyone will have a chance to discover their favorite.

The best UK gin distilleries for tours and tastings

Words by Laura Richards , William Morris and Louella Berryman

gin tour and tasting

Just 10 years ago,  gin distillery tours in the UK  were a growing phenomenon, with a handful of pioneering makers opening up their stillhouses for an introduction to the history of gin and a snifter of their  London Dry .

Nowadays, thanks to the modern gin revival and a continued interest from the public, it’s quite rare for a  gin  distillery not to host some form of tasting, tour or masterclass. Many are even offering the opportunity for you to make a unique edition of their product at their very own on-site ‘gin schools’.

Given that there are now over 800 UK gin distilleries, chances are there’s someone making this  spirit  near you. But if you’re seeking out the best tours and tastings for gin discoveries and champion bottlings, we’ve pulled together a comprehensive guide to gin distillery tours and tastings in the UK based on medal-winning ginmakers from the  IWSC 2023 . Each of the distilleries listed below either won a Gold or Silver medal in this year’s competition for one of their expressions, so the spirit you’ll be sampling up-close-and-personal has been tasted and rated by the experts.

In the below list, you’ll find a mixture of historic and heritage ginmakers – from  Plymouth Gin  to  Beefeater  – and brand-new craft distilleries forging ahead with a fresh take on the tour and tasting format. Many are offering a straightforward, affordable and informative way to taste through their creative range; others are three-hour courses where you can grapple with a miniature  pot still under the direction of a master distiller. So-called ‘ginnovation’ is still thriving in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, so expect some of these tours to get geeky out on the production floor.

But if you’re more interested in getting down to the good stuff, a number of these UK distilleries run on-site gin bars, serving visitors a G&T or cocktail as close to the source as it comes.

Gin distillery tours in England

gin tour and tasting

New Forest botanicals – including hibiscus and liquorice – are at the core of the gin being produced by 820 Spirits, all sourced from a local nursery on the outskirts of Lymington. It’s also where you’ll find the brand’s newly launched distillery bar, home to a ‘Spirits School’ where you can craft your own expression based on the local forest flora. You’ll be able to take home your personalised gin at the end of each session – or stick around for another at the horseshoe-shaped bar. An exit via the plant shop should be all the more memorable after a few G&Ts.  LR Shallowmead Nurseries, Lymington, SO41 8PA From £100 820spirits.com

beefeater distillery

London, England

It’s a classic for a reason. Beefeater has been going strong since 1862 – but its London Dry gin still wins as many awards (including a Silver medal at the IWSC 2022) as the best of the craft upstarts. If you’re going to get an education on the trajectory of ‘mother’s ruin’, where better than at its historic Kennington headquarters – where a visitor centre launched in 2014. Hosted, interactive tours last for 1.5 hours and include a tasting of three spirits from the range, plus a G&T at the bar at the end. A ‘VIP’ tour  at £45 adds a welcome cocktail and a visit to the still house: home to the brand’s original Victorian pot stills. LR 20 Montford Place, London SE11 5DE From £25 beefeatergin.com

bond street distillery building

Bond Street Distillery

Leicestershire, england.

A visit to Bond Street Distillery, launched in 2019 in the market town of Hinckley by gin lover and entrepreneur Sally Faulkner, is a truly social affair. There are two bars to choose from – the lively, balloon-glass-filled Bond Street Social, and intimate, upstairs venue The Crow’s Nest, which gets lively with gig nights on Thursdays. The Victorian building has been lovingly refurbished from its original function as part of the Brocklehurst Hosiery Company. A comprehensive ‘Gin School’ offers ample opportunities for learning about, and of course drinking, the distillery’s key gins. Cambridge Distillery

Cambridge, england.

The aim at Cambridge’s innovative distillery is to capture the flavour of its meadow botanicals when they happen to be at their most fresh. This too sees master distiller William Lowe (who is also a Master of Wine) experimenting with vintage releases of the juniper spirit. Expect a trip to the countryside distillery to be an eye-opener, then. Visitors to Cambridge city centre can also get hands on with the brand at its Green Street ‘Gin Laboratory’, selecting to make your own, taste through the range or even take part in a masterclass in molecular mixology.  LR Distillery: 20-22 High St, Grantchester, Cambridge CB3 9NF; Laboratory: 10 Green St, Cambridge CB2 3JU From £35 cambridgedistillery.co.uk

Out on a farm in the Hertfordshire countryside, monthly micro-distillery tours take place introducing visitors to the playful, illustrated bottles of Copper in the Clouds. The brand’s fruity gin expressions include an IWSC Silver-winning lychee and raspberry gin. The small scale of the distillery, founded in 2018, gives enthusiasts a chance to get up-close and personal on a 90-minute tour with the makers, learning how they craft their spirits and enjoying an energetically flavoured gin and tonic in their company.  LR Dowsetts Farm, Collier’s End, Ware SG11 1EF From £30 copperintheclouds.co.uk

With its own gin academy and a bar up above serving zero waste cocktails, Gyre & Gimble has firmly established itself on the Norwich scene – and that’s despite launching in the midst of a pandemic. Its Alice in Wonderland-referencing spirits include an IWSC Gold-award-winning gin featuring discarded Pinot Noir pomace collected from a nearby vineyard. At the academy, you can select from a range of 30 botanicals to craft your own gin, with four G&Ts provided for liquid inspiration throughout the course. Henley, England

Meet Tony and Mac, the pair of alembic stills producing Henley’s small-batch creations and named after Master Distiller Jacob Wilson’s two gin-loving grandfathers. They take pride of place inside a repurposed threshing barn in Henley-on-Thames. Here, visitors can partake in a brief tour and tasting. Or they can opt for an in-depth introduction to the spirit by operating their own mini pot still in a masterclass that takes place in a barn festooned with fairy lights and fitted with a horsehoe-shaped bar – ideal for that all-important gin-fuelled post-lesson debrief.  LR Hampstead Farm, Binfield Heath, Henley-on-Thames RG9 4LG From £15 thehenleydistillery.co.uk

gin tour and tasting

Maidstone, Kent

History indicates that gin has been made in Maidstone for more than 200 years and it continues today at The Maidstone Distillery, based in some of the old market buildings in the town centre. There’s nothing old-fashioned about the distillery itself or the bar where the tours take place; the design is geared towards impressing and entertaining visitors, rather than simply allowing them a look at a utilitarian production facility. Tours take 90 minutes and begin with a double G&T at the bar, followed by insights into how the distillery creates its spirits in the ‘experience room’, the tour itself and finally a return to the bar for a guided tasting. Cocktail masterclasses and gin-making courses are also available separately. WM 5 Market Buildings, Maidstone, ME14 1HP £22.50 themaidstonedistillery.com

Tidebrook, East Sussex

Another distillery situated in a beautiful place in the UK, Mousehall Estate sits in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex. Wine lovers may be intrigued to see that the owners of Mousehall are Gary and Kathy Jordan of South Africa’s Jordan Wine Estate – its Kathy herself who is the guide for the distillery tour. In addition to learning about how Mousehall’s gin is made, the tour includes a five-part tasting of the gin and a sample of the brand’s vodka, followed by a complimentary Gin & Tonic. The wine connection means that Mousehall also has its own winery, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vineyards on the land. WM Mousehall, Tidebrook, Wadhurst TN5 6PG £25 mousehall.com

gin shop and bar at masons of yorkshire

MASONS OF YORKSHIRE

Yorkshire, england.

Karl and Cathy Mason started with a Facebook page called ‘G&T Friday’, where they tried and tested their way through gins. They soon decided they could do better, and established their own label in 2013 – but just six years into production, disaster struck for ‘Yorkshire’s first gin’ when a fire broke out at the distillery. Thankfully, the recovery was swift, with a new warehouse opening just outside Bedale later that year. A tour of the new Masons facility – which is still welcoming its first visitors, thanks to the pandemic – takes in a trip to the laboratory, where the ginmaker is riffing on its core range to create new flavoured expressions, from English lavender to that very Yorkshire thing: tea. The experience ends with a G&T of your choice, which seems rather fitting, actually.  LR Trinity Place, Conygarth Way, Leeming Bar, Yorkshire DL7 9EE £25 masonsofyorkshire.com

A brand created by four men with plenty of drinks experience gained from various hospitality roles in London, Pocketful of Stones is located in the centre of Penzance, just a short walk from the railway station, in Cornwall. The brand’s portfolio of spirits is not limited to gins, so there’s a brandy, whisky, liqueurs and even an absinthe to try if you visit the distillery, which also incorporates an enticing bar that opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. As well as learning about how the spirits are made and sampling the range, you’ll also hear more about the rather unusual backstory to Pocketful of Stones and how it made the transition from a pub basement in London’s Fitzrovia to a dedicated building on the Cornish coast. Sky Wave’s Old Tom Gin scored an impressive 92 points at the IWSC 2023, so is one to look out for. If you’re travelling with people who don’t appreciate gin, Bicester Heritage and Bicester Village are nearby, so there are at least two attractions locally that you can use as bargaining chips if necessary. There can’t be many gin distilleries in the world with surroundings as dramatic as this one. The distillery also makes its own whisky, which you can try on the tour along with the gin, and the local sandy beaches are as good as the drinks. The distillery’s shepherd’s hut is where tastings take place, giving visitors spectacular views across Loch Hourn to enjoy while sampling the gins (and the brand’s whiskies too, if you wish). The Best London Gin Distilleries for Tastings, Tours and Experiences

The Best London Gin Distilleries for Tastings, Tours and Experiences

Love This? Save and Share!

London has had a long love affair with gin – no surprise then that there are a tonne of cool gin distilleries, tours and experiences in the city. These are the gin experiences and gin distilleries in London that you shouldn’t miss.

We’re pretty sure that London is at least 50% fuelled by gin. Our obsession with all things gin has been going for centuries and, with a slew of cool distillery openings in the past few years, shows no sign of abating.

But where can you find the really good stuff? You know, the kind of gin that makes you stop after your first sip to bow down and recognise the fact that what you are drinking is pure fabulousness – almost, but not quite too good for the likes of you.

Gather round, friends, we’re about to discover the best gin experiences in London. Cool distilleries, tastings and experiences for your next tipple.

Best Gin Distilleries in London

After more than a century where gin fell out of favour in the capital, it’s back with a vengeance. Praise be for that. Here are our favourite gin distilleries in London.

The London Distillery Company

London Distillery Company

If you like a bit of variety with your liquor, then you’ll love visiting The London Distillery Company .

They were the first whisky distillery in London in over a century, and their fabulous rye Whisky will make you glad it came back.

Of course, we’re all about the gin – and it’s excellent. Inspired by the botanicals of English gardens, the ‘Kew’ series really is a masterclass in British gin (and one of our favourite tipples in the summer months).

You can discover what we’re talking about yourself with a tour of the tiny Bermondsey gin distillery. It’s one of our favourite gin tasting experiences in London, walking you through their entire collection and the production process.

Half Hitch London

There’s a certain thrill that comes with sampling a small and exclusive batch of gin like that distilled at Half Hitch London .

Even better if it’s concocted from all kinds of carefully-selected and obscure ingredients, like Malawian black tea and bergamot.

Located in the bustling Camden Market, we love swinging by this stall to sample some gin. There’s also usually a batch being distilled right before your eyes, in a copper pot.

Don’t let the humble setup fool you; owner Mark Holdsworth knows his stuff. He spent fifteen years working for Bacardi, before venturing off to do his own thing. And a great thing it is.

City of London Distillery

City of London Distillery

Gin has been a country-wide obsession for many centuries, however there was a long lull in production in the heart of the capital.

All that has well and truly changed now, and the City of London Distillery was at the forefront of that revolution.

Since launching their flagship gin back in 2012, they’ve expanded their range to include six delicious tipples.

Our personal fave is award-winning City of London Dry Gin, although we also get a hearty dose of local pride sipping The Square Mile with its distinctive logo.

The best way to experience their range is to take their famous City of London gin distillery tour in London. You’ll get a behind the scenes peek at production, as well as a taste of three gins.

They also do a “design your own” gin lab experience as well (we’ve done it and it. is. brilliant ). Otherwise, head down to their subterranean bar – one of the best gin bars in London – for a cheeky tipple or two.

Read More: Here’s why I picked the City of London’s distillery bar as one of the coolest bars in Farringdon

East London Liquor Company

So we all love gin (obviously), but sometimes it’s nice to have a little bit of choice. Enter the East London Liquor Company , that also produces whisky and vodka as well.

It’s hard to believe that not long ago, this was the first gin distillery in East London in over a century. It might have been awhile, but gin (& co) was back with a bang.

Today the distillery has won many awards and also runs some of the best London distillery tours.

There are three standard tours to choose from (from 30 minutes to an hour-and-a-half), as well as a regular calendar of special events as well.

If you ask us, you can’t miss the classic London Dry Gin, with its subtle but noticeable hit of cardamom.

Beefeater Gin

With all these new-fangled hipster distilleries, you’d be forgiven for thinking gin in London is a young person’s game.

You’d be sorely mistaken, however. In fact, there are still a few old timers around the place such as the famous Beefeater Gin .

The unusual name is drawn from the nickname for royal palace guards. It was bestowed upon the distillery soon after it opened its first factory in Chelsea in 1876.

Well over a century later, it’s still one of the most popular British gin companies. They also run one of the best gin tours in London.

These include a “smell tour” of ingredients used to give gin its characteristic flavour.

Mother’s Ruin

Walthamstow

Mother's Ruin Gin

Before gin became the tipple of choice for stylish Londoners, it was feared it would be the downfall of society as the Georgians knew it.

It was a ‘mother’s ruin!’, it was declared – responsible for turning otherwise prim and proper women into utter drunkards (we can relate).

Fears of the impending social apocalypse didn’t come to fruition, luckily. Instead, ‘ Mother’s Ruin ’ became the name of a pretty fantastic gin distiller in London.

We particularly love the ‘Gin Palace’ in an old WWII munitions factory. Inside, you can sample over 80 different types of gin, guilt-free.

Sipsmith

Who hasn’t dreamed of starting a bar or distillery with their best friend, especially after a few fine drinks have been consumed?

Well, the brains behind Sipsmith actually put the chatter into action. The two best friends opened their distillery in 2009 and have been going strong ever since.

Numerous awards show it was a mighty fine call, while we can certainly attest the gin is delicious.

To find out what all the fuss is about you can take a distillery tour. The standard price includes a behind-the-scenes look as well as some tastings.

They also do a fabulous cocktail class, which is one of our favourite gin experiences in London.

Graveney Gin

Graveney Gin

Graveney Gin is just the small-batch London gin distillery that Tooting needed – even if it didn’t know it.

Distiller and long-time gin fanatic Victoria Christie (who was drinking G&Ts well before it became cool again) first started producing this organic gin in South London after a masterclass at The Ginstitute. Fast forward a couple of years and she’d released her first batch of the stellar Graveney Gin.

The rest, as they say, is history. Each batch is made using a 30l copper still and fresh botanicals – making it one of the most unique tipples in the city.

Portobello Road Gin

Notting Hill

If we haven’t yet convinced you that London is really, really into its gin – we present to you: The Distillery .

This simply-named venue is basically a gin lover’s playground, offering up four enticing levels of gin-related debauchery and its own distillery producing Portobello Road gin.

Amongst the fun there are multiple tasting spaces, including the oh-so-fancy Boardroom for group tastings. Then there’s two bars, the distillery and the Ginstitute (scroll up for more information about that).

If you’re looking to wow the gin lover in your life or just experience one of the best gin tastings in London, then you’d better head on over to this gin paradise.

When we call this one ‘small batch’, we mean really small batch. As in, sixteen bottles a day, distilled in a humble copper pot behind the bar.

Plus, it’s not just the teensy tiny production that makes Highwayman Gin one of the most unique gin tastings in London.

There’s also the fact that the best place to taste it is at nearby Ladies & Gents , a tiny bar in Kentish town that holds gin masterclasses using Highwayman. It’s located in a former public loo.

What a place to enjoy a gin night in London. Sure, that’s pretty much peak London. But we are here for it.

Jensen’s Gin

Jensen's Gin

There are plenty of London gin distilleries trying all kinds of weird and wonderful things. Then there’s those that remain true to traditional methods and ingredients.

Jensen’s Gin proudly produces ‘gin as it should be’ – gin that’s true to its origins and traditions. Their fabulous Old Tom gin is even replicated from an authentic 1840s gin handbook.

It’s obviously working, as this Bermondsey gin distillery is one of the best loved in the city.

You can sample their gin from their home in one of the archways at the end of Maltby Street Market on weekends, or email them to book in for a distillery tour.

Heading to Bermondsey? Why not combine a visit to Jensen’s with a trip to the Bermondsey Beer Mile – London’s coolest collection of craft beer breweries .

The Aussies have certainly made their mark on the London food and drink scene, and it’s not just with coffee shops. We’ve also got the Land Down Under to thank for what’s on offer at 58 Gin .

Coming from abroad, owner Mark isn’t afraid to tear up the rule book and do things his own way. It was this attitude that saw him garner the nickname “Moonshine Mark” as he tinkered away with his recipe.

Eventually, he hit the jackpot and the first batch of 58 Gin was crafted. Crisp and soft with nine distinct botanicals, the gin was an immediate hit.

58 Gin runs a gin distilling experience in London, where you can learn more about the process. You’ll then have a chance to craft your own gin to take away with you (more on that later).

Hayman’s Distillery

Haymans Gin

They say if you’re onto a good thing then why change it – and that’s certainly the ethos of Christopher Hayman, chief gin maker at Hayman’s Distillery .

Considering that Christopher is a fifth-generation London gin producer, we’re certainly not about to disagree with him.

Then there’s the fact that his gins – and especially the ‘Deeply Rested’, if you ask us – are pretty damn fantastic.

All in all, his traditional approach and recipes have obviously paid off. If you want to learn more about Hayman’s methods and sample some delicious gin (and of course you do!), then they run both tours and a cocktail masterclass.

Sacred Distillery

Back in the 1800s, as gin mania really took hold in London, times got desperate. Such was the demand for gin that pretty much anything that could be distilled, was – regardless of taste.

It would take centuries for London to shake off its bad gin-related hangover, and it wasn’t really until the late 2000s that people started taking London gin seriously again.

At the forefront of that movement was Ian Hart of Sacred Distillery .

If there was someone to lend a hand to restoring London’s gin reputation, he was a good pick, having a degree in science from Cambridge. As well as a pretty intense passion for gin.

Ian blended his analytical approach and passion for gin to create a pretty amazing product. Each bottle of Sacred gin is well-thought out and exceptionally produced, but with plenty of heart.

To experience it for yourself, you can tour the distillery, learn to make your own gin or try your hand at a cocktail masterclass.

King of Soho

Soho is proudly unique and non-conforming, so you’d expect any gin distilled there to offer something that bit different.

With 12 botanicals and made according to 11th century methods, the King of Soho doesn’t disappoint. Made by the son of late Soho personality Paul Raymond, this tipple is a love letter to the borough.

You’ll find this gin on offer at various bars and clubs around London. They also have semi-regular pop-ups where you can give it a try.

Gin Lane 1751

London Bridge

Named after the infamous painting that depicted the debauchery caused by gin in the 1700s, Gin Lane 1751 is one of my favourite distilleries.

They hark back to a Victorian style of gin, complete with charming vintage bottles. You know, the kind you finish and then can’t convince yourself to throw away.

The ‘Victoria’ pink gin is my go-to for a cocktail, however all of their four gins are pretty fantastic.

Other Gin Tastings, Tours & Experiences in London

Discovering london’s gin in a mini cooper.

Looking to dive deeper and learn more about gin on a gin tasting in London? Here are some great tours which will take you under the surface and introduce you to some of London’s best gin experiences.

It’s more British than crumpets and corgis – discovering London’s gin in a retro Mini Cooper .

We know there’s some steep competition, but this might just be the best gin distillery tour in London.

Over two hours, you’ll drop by two gin bars and also tour a distillery. A passionate local will be your driver, full of insider information and gin history.

Three gin drinks are included in the price, so you can expect to step out of the Mini feeling quite merry.

Borough Market & Beefeater Gin Tour

Take in some of the best tastes on offer in London with the Borough Market and Beefeater Gin Distillery Tour .

They’re two of our favourite hotspots in the capital for food and drink and we’re pretty confident you’ll love them too.

Get the insider perspective on the market’s history and premier stalls. Then, move on to Beefeater’s gin where you’ll tour the distillery and – of course – sample some varieties.

As it’s a small group tour, you might even meet some new gin-obsessed buddies.

Gin Journey

If you love drinking gin, be assured you’re in good company worldwide. Knowing this, Gin Journey has set up gin-related events in cities all over the globe.

Of course, any company that specialises in gin journeys has to have plenty on offer in London. After all, it is the home of gin (and that’s not just my London bias talking).

Every Saturday, three separate tours are run visiting the neighbourhoods of Soho, Shoreditch and Bermondsey. On each journey, you’ll get to explore five amazing venues and sample the gins at each.

Led by a gin expert, it’s a great way to learn about gin and also meet some other gin enthusiasts to drink with.

The Ginstitute

Tucked inside the four-storey gin wonderland that is The Distillery, the Ginstitute is a mecca for gin lovers from all over the world.

Learn everything you could possibly want to know about the history and production of gin at their London gin masterclass.

Once you’ve filled up on gin knowledge, and, of course, gin – you’ll have the chance to craft your own. You never know, yours might just be the next big thing!

What sets this London gin distillery “make your own” tour apart is that they keep your recipe on file. So, if you do fall madly in love with your personal recipe you’ll be able to re-order it forever more.

Make Your Own Gin at 58 Gin

We’ve already mentioned how 58 Gin’s owner got the moniker ‘Moonshine Mark’ thanks to his constant tinkering. Well, it makes sense that he’d offer you your own chance to experiment with gin.

This gin class in London will help you learn about what goes into a perfect bottle of gin. You can also hear about the history of the drink in London and further afar.

From there, it’s your turn to have a go at distilling the perfect bottle for yourself. Someone will be on hand to help you from going astray, but you’ll have definite creative control.

As well as your own wax-sealed 500ml bottle, you’ll also leave the three-hour experience with a ‘gin gift bag’, which sounds pretty good to me.

Sipsmith Supper Club

Sipsmith have a good range of gin-related activities you can take part in. Some of these are the kind of straightforward fun you’d expect from a distillery: tours, tastings, the occasional cocktail masterclass.

But they also have something else that should be on your radar – a gin supper club . That’s basically exactly what you’d think it is: a supper club with gin pairings. Wait, it gets better.

The people they team up with to do the cooking are the folks from La Trompette, a Michelin-starred restaurant and neighbour to Sipsmith. They cook up a delicious menu of French food that goes rather well with a few of Sipsmith’s drinks.

Secret Gin Tour

Perhaps you want to learn more about gin. Perhaps you want to drink a lot of the stuff while you do – it’d only be right, in the name of education that is. Then, perhaps you’d not want to restrict yourself to just one distillery.

We understand your predicament. Not to worry, we can also highly recommend this distillery tour from Secret Food Tours . It’s so good they actually won awards for it. So what do they do?

Well, they’ll take you on a tour of some of London’s best, including a few that are mentioned in our guide here.

You’ll be starting off at an emporium with hundreds of bottles to taste and once you’ve completed your research you’ll be off on your way to cruise through the streets of Soho and track down a few more distilleries, and then a few more.

When all’s said and done you’ll have hit all the top spots in under four hours and learnt a whole lot about England’s gin culture in the process.

Practical Tips for Exploring London’s Gin Distilleries

  • Want to taste gin like a pro? The first step is to ditch the tonic, ice and garnishes and taste the gin neat then dilute with some water for the second tasting.
  • There are a lot of different opinions about which glass is best for sampling gin – whichever you go for, make sure it’s sparkling clean so nothing interferes with the flavours and aromatics of the gin.
  • Gin should be tasted at room temperature – both extreme heat and cold can affect the flavours.
  • Smell first – swirl the gin and smell it from a couple of inches away.
  • Taste the gin neat first and then diluted with water – both will help you pick up the flavours and botanicals of the gin.
  • If you really love gin and want to try even more delicious concoctions, try the Craft Gin Club – they deliver great gin straight to your door.

Shortcross Distillery Tours

Bought a tour of the distillery for my wife as a Christmas present. On arrival we were met by Fiona who was very welcoming and explained to my wife and her friend what to expect from the tour.

The tour start with a little history of the lovely estate and the talking about the various different herbs and spices that grow in the grounds and go into the gin.

The on site shop is very well laid out and surprisingly included more than just gin.

I’d thoroughly recommend the tour to anyone interested in the gin making process, it is obvious that both Fiona and David have a passion for their product.

Great afternoon out!

Fantastic visit for my husband’s birthday Neil and David both very knowledgeable – great tour of the distillery and some insight into the production of Shortcross with David and then how to make the perfect G&T with Neil. Apparently I make the better G&T so my job from now on! The weather prevented a walk around the grounds – an excuse to visit again!

Fantastic way to spend an afternoon relaxing and catching up with friends in a beautiful setting. Lovely shop and the gin and tonic master class was great fun.

12 Etiquette Tips You Need To Follow On A Bourbon Distillery Tour, According To Industry Experts

person sipping bourbon in distillery

For those who love visiting world-class distilleries, particularly those of the bourbon variety, exploring the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is the best way to line up an action-packed day of learning, sightseeing, and, of course, tasting whiskey. For bourbon lovers, a distillery tour is huge fun, but there are a few etiquette tips to keep in mind to ensure that you and the other guests have the best experience possible.

We've gathered expert advice from some of the best bourbon brands to give us first-hand insight into how to be on your best behavior while on a bourbon distillery tour. Angel's Envy distillery operations manager Damian Gallaher and distillery general manager Dee Ford discussed these etiquette tips. Additionally, we spoke with assistant general manager at Michter's Distillery, Anne Mae, for her useful advice on the dos and don'ts of distillery touring.

Along with these experts, I've also worked as a brand ambassador in spirits, conducting large consumer tastings and events. I know that customer behavior and engagement can be what makes or breaks a session. Folks spend plenty of time, money, and attention when planning a trip on the Bourbon Trail; these etiquette tips can equip you with the knowledge to have fun, stay safe, and contribute to everyone's enjoyment.

Book in advance

Benjamin Franklin once said, "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." Whether or not he was saying this in reference to attending a bourbon distillery tour is unclear, but the advice remains sound nonetheless. Luckily, Damian Gallaher from Angel's Envy echoes this same sentiment, with some practical advice. "Book in advance. Bourbon tourism is booming. Although some distilleries may have walk-in opportunities for tours and tastings, these are the exception, not the rule."

Gallaher explains that if you're setting your expectations high and going to the effort to travel to a distillery, taking the time to make a booking is well worth it. "Nothing is worse than planning a dream trip to Bourbon Country only to find out your favorite distillery is sold out". Having a booking locked in at your distillery of choice means you don't have to cause unnecessary stress for the staff in trying to deliver a satisfying experience.

Booking a distillery tour is convenient enough, and guests can book easily on distillery websites. This also gives an opportunity to discover the full range of options at your chosen distillery. Anne Mae from Michter's recommends looking ahead in this way, with yet more useful advice. "Do some research about the distillery you plan to visit and learn about the different tours and experiences they offer." Planning ahead for all the distillery experiences you want to do is another way to avoid causing confusion or disruption when you arrive.

Distilleries can be bustling places, and often tours run like clockwork to a schedule. Being on time is the best way to keep your end of the bargain as a visitor. Anne Mae recommends you arrive at least 10 minutes early to give you time to check in and familiarize yourself with the facility. Damian Gallaher echoes this sentiment, stressing the importance of being on time. "Please keep in mind that there most likely is a tour right before yours and right after yours. For these to run smoothly and not impact the experiences of others, they have to start and end on time."

Not only does it pay to manage your time prior to attending a distillery tour, but Gallaher also describes how staying conscious of your timekeeping and scheduling can save you hassle down the line. This is especially true when lining up an action-packed day on the bourbon trail. "Make sure you have allotted sufficient time to get to each location," says Gallaher, "and avoid overextending yourself. More stops do not always equal more fun." Of course, as Gallaher also points out, not fitting everything you want to see into a single trip just gives you an excuse to return.

Leave the kids at home

This is an easy one to overlook. Your mind is fixated on the bourbon-fueled adventure ahead of you; the whole family is in the car for the day ... and you arrive to find out that the kiddies don't really fit into this vision. Damian Gallaher explains that there are some valid reasons for distilleries stopping children at the door. "Some distilleries are able to accommodate children; some are not. There are legal guidelines all distilleries must adhere to regarding the presence of minors. Always check before you go." Arriving with children when there are legal reasons they're not allowed on-site can put staff in an awkward position as they have to ask you to remove them from the premises.

Of course, legal regulations aren't the only considerations when bringing children to a bourbon distillery. Gallaher continues: "Even if your destinations do allow for children, please keep in mind it may impact the adults in your group and what they are able to do at the distillery." For obvious reasons, bourbon distilleries may not be as interesting to kids as they are to adults, so it may just be better for everyone if they don't get dragged along.

Ask questions

When speaking to a large group of people, there's nothing worse than a silent audience. Whether guiding guests through the distillery or stepping them through the intricacies of bourbon's flavors and aromas, a group that's tongue-tied can make it difficult to stimulate engagement and raise the tour's energy. The best way to improve your own experience on a bourbon tour, as well as that of the other guests, is to ask questions.

This is one of Damian Gallaher's key etiquette tips for visitors. "Don't be afraid to ask questions — even if you think they're silly. If you're wondering about something, so are others in your group." What's more, asking many questions is actually helpful to tour guides, as it helps them connect with the group. Gallaher explains that guests having questions is actually preferable. "Kentucky Bourbon Trail guides are some of the most knowledgeable bourbon experts in the world. They love to share their knowledge with brand-new whiskey enthusiasts and lifelong enthusiasts alike."

Anne Mae also suggests asking lots of questions during your tour, reminding guests to ask not only about the qualities of the final products but also how the production process impacts them. If you have any uncertainties about what particular equipment does, how different ingredients are added, or who does what, putting your hand up is certainly encouraged. "Your tour guide is there to help you learn and appreciate the art of making whiskey."

Remember, it may be someone else's first time

Chances are, at some point, you've attended an event, tour, or tasting with that one know-it-all in the corner who's just bursting to show off their expertise. Damian Gallaher reminds guests that even if they're already familiar with the distillery's products and processes or have an encyclopedic knowledge of bourbon, it's important to remember that may not be the case for all guests. "If you've heard the bourbon laws four times that day, then one, you've booked too many experiences for one day," he says. "Two, there are probably others on their first tour."

Gallaher explains that although it's wonderful if you have extensive bourbon knowledge or know more than others are offering in the group, the respectful thing to do is to keep it to yourself. It's important to trust your tour guide to touch on relevant concepts in their own time. Just because they haven't mentioned a particular fact or explained a stage in distilling doesn't mean that information doesn't have an intentional place later in the tour. It's important to engage and ask questions, but avoid using questions as a way to demonstrate your knowledge.

Keep an open mind

Whether bourbon is your chosen tipple or not, it's important to keep an open mind when attending a bourbon distillery tour. Even if you've decided bourbon isn't for you, being open to new experiences and information can only improve your experience and help the tour guide. A group of open-minded visitors who're there to learn makes it much easier to engage with and deliver an enjoyable experience.

"During the tour, keep an open mind and be willing to try spirits that you might not typically drink or are not familiar with. This will allow you to explore new flavors and expand your palate," suggests Anne Mae. "Keep in mind that our taste preferences change over time, so you might discover a new favorite expression during the tasting."

Perhaps there's a bourbon with less corn and more rye that sparks unexpected joy. Maybe you find that with a promising bourbon and chocolate pairing , your experience of a whiskey you've previously written off gets a new lease on life. Your guide isn't there to trick you into liking bourbon but to suggest different ways to enjoy the spirit that may open up new doors of enjoyment.

Pace yourself

Wineries, breweries, and distilleries are all places where it's easy to get a little carried away. It makes sense; you're literally at the source of your favorite products. The golden ticket winners who went to the chocolate factory hardly exercised much restraint, but then, it didn't work out so well for most of them. Even if you're most looking forward to the part where you get to actually drink the bourbon, it's essential that you stay mindful of your consumption.

Damian Gallaher offers this advice –  "Pace yourself. Distilled spirits have a higher proof — these are not wine tastings. For context, many wines are roughly 25 proof. The whiskeys you will be tasting will be anywhere from 80 proof to over 120 proof." Pacing yourself doesn't just mean being conscientious of the whiskey to enjoy at one site. For many, a distillery tour is just one stop-off of many on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Gallaher also has a recommendation for how many visits to squeeze into one day. "Three tastings (most tastings will involve multiple pours) over the course of a day is about where you want to be."

Be attentive

When we said there's nothing worse than a quiet audience, that wasn't actually true. There is one thing worse than a quiet audience, and that's an audience that doesn't pay attention in the first place. Imagine guiding a group of people through the distillery grounds, and a few members wander off or chat loudly the whole way through. Being inattentive can make it harder for the tour guide and disrupt the experience for the rest of the group.

This doesn't just apply to the moving tour of the facility but the tasting experience as well. "Listen to what your tasting guide says to get the most out of your bourbon tasting," says Damian Gallaher.

Typically, the more alcohol a group consumes, the more chatty they become. While this may stimulate more question-asking, it can also mean more disruptive talking at the back of the class. It's important to be mindful of the ongoing presentation and remain attentive throughout. Groups usually get a chance to have a chat amongst themselves at some point during a tour or tasting, so just sit tight and stay focused while enjoying the tour.

Follow instructions

While you may be a seasoned bourbon distillery visitor or just be holding out for that delicious bourbon reward at the end, it's essential that you follow instructions throughout. A distillery tour is a carefully curated experience, and it's bad etiquette to jump the gun. Damian Gallaher urges visitors to listen to everything the tour guide says and follow instructions carefully. "Don't sit down and immediately drink the bourbon sample in front of you."

Dee Ford, Angel's Envy distillery general manager, reminds us that there's more to enjoying whiskey than just sipping. "Wait for your guide to talk you through the process. Nosing is just as important as tasting." Whether or not you already know how to taste bourbon like a pro , it's essential that you listen to the instructions your guide gives you throughout. For example, you may not know from looking at it that a bourbon is high enough proof to scorch your nose clean off, but your guide may warn you to proceed with caution or nose the bourbon from a distance. If you dive your nose right in without taking the time to listen, you may end up with regretful tears in your eyes.

Share your opinions on tasting notes

While there are certain times during a distillery tour when your ears are more useful than your mouth, sharing your opinions can be a great way to engage with the tour guide and positively contribute to the experience. The key is to wait until an appropriate moment to share your opinions without interrupting the tour or derailing the tasting. Typically, a tour guide will ask for tasting notes or opinions, and when they do, sharing is encouraged.

As Dee Ford instructs: "Do share your personal tasting notes when asked by your guide. They like to get your input, which makes it more fun for everyone. Someone else may be thinking of the same tasting notes as you." Mentioning that you can taste notes like cocoa, vanilla, citrus, or caramel can actually help other guests connect with those characteristics and even help them find their own. If you sometimes struggle to find flavors or aromas, looking over a bourbon-tasting wheel before or during your tasting can help stimulate the recognition of notes in the bourbon.

Usually, as soon as one guest goes out on a limp and shares what they're tasting, others gain the courage to do the same. It's always helpful to take one for the team and be the first to share your tasting notes when asked.

Thank your guide at the end

It may seem basic, but remembering your manners is also a part of good bourbon distillery tour etiquette, including saying thank you. "Do consider thanking your guide if you enjoyed their tasting process," Dee Ford says. Distillery tour guides put a huge amount of effort into ensuring that your experience is enjoyable, informative, and unique. This also means treating every new group like welcome guests while being friendly and attentive to their needs.

A brief thank you is the fastest way to show that you appreciate this effort and assure the guide that you had a positive experience. Thanking your guide is also extremely helpful to new or less-experienced tour guides. Thanking them after the tour can let them know they're doing well and help them hone their abilities as tour guides. If you have constructive feedback, this can also be helpful but remember that too much criticism can undermine a thank you.

Gratuity is always appreciated

Of course, there are many ways to thank your tour guides, and a popular way is with a cash gratuity. While a tip is not always expected, as Dee Ford describes, "Gratuity is always appreciated." If it feels appropriate to leave a small gratuity for your tour guide, this is an effective way to thank them for the experience and encourage them to continue their good work.

Deciding a reasonable tip for a distillery tour is similar to determining how much you should tip for dinner. You may consider the cost of the tour and decide an appropriate amount relative to this amount, using 20% as a starting point. Alternatively, you can decide on a reasonable amount proportional to the experience and your appreciation.

It can also be helpful to consider the length of the experience. For example, up to $10 can be a reasonable amount for a half-day experience, while for a full-day experience, $20 per person may be more appropriate. If you don't have much cash on you or these numbers are a tad too steep for your budget, offering whatever you can as a gratuity still communicates your appreciation and shows the guide that their efforts were noticed.

George and Lynda Green both come from the medical field where they have a huge passion for their patients’ well-being. Now, they have taken that passion and focused it on making great wines that people enjoy. When they aren’t taking care of their patients, walking their 12 acres of vines with their two dogs, Sophie and Tess, or making their wonderful wines, they love to hang out with their 5 kids and 4 grandkids, entertain their friends in their backyard kitchen, and travel the world. George’s favorite winery activity is getting down and dirty on the crush pad during harvest and Lynda’s is welcoming guests to the tasting room and showing them through the current releases of wine.
