Filling a suitcase can be a tedious task but compression packing cubes are an extremely useful travel hack to stay organized and maximize space. While traditional packing cubes are great for keeping items sorted, compression cubes can save even more precious room in a carry-on or checked bag.

We tested a variety of packing cubes to find the best compressible, highly durable options to consolidate clothing in an organized, efficient way, and make traveling easier. Our top pick is the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes set with sturdy zippers and water-resistant nylon. We loved that the cube could be packed full and it was still easy to press the air out and zip the cube down to constrict the items with minimal effort. And if you’re not in search of a three- or four-piece cube set, we found an excellent singular cube as well as lightweight options, too.

Best Overall

Gonex compression packing cubes.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Both the zippers and nylon material feel sturdy when the bag is packed full and compressed.

The bags weren’t as waterproof as we had hoped.

We love the simple and functional design of our top pick, the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes. These no-frills packing cubes thoroughly impressed us during testing thanks to their extremely tough zippers that easily closed around the packed items. In fact, even after using these compression packing cubes for six months, we didn't notice any signs that this set was losing its durability. All you have to do is fill the cubes with clothes, close the top zipper, and then squeeze out the air, and compress the bag with the center zipper that wraps around the sides. It didn’t require much effort to quickly close the compression zippers which prevented air from getting back into the bag. The seams remained perfectly stitched and didn’t show any signs of expansion or stress even after we packed it to the brim.

While we would consider the nylon material more water-resistant than waterproof after we splashed the bag with a little bit of water, we still think they would protect clothes from condensation or dampness, especially if they’re also packed away in a suitcase. The four-pack compression bags come in small, medium, large, and extra-large sizes so you can compress a variety of clothing from pants to jackets. We love that the bags have handles on the top making it easier to grab the bags whether they’re in a suitcase or a backpack.

The Details: 4 bags | 17.3 x 13 x 3.54 inches (extra large), 14.5 x 10.6 x 3.54 inches (large), 11.8 x 8.9 x 3.54 inches (medium), 9.8 x 7.5 x 3.54 inches (small) | Water-repellent

Well Traveled Compression Packing Cubes

 Amazon

  • Design 4 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

The set includes three compression bags and a sack for laundry or shoes.

The bags aren’t water resistant.

For travelers in search of a budget-friendly pack of travel cubes, the Well Traveled Compression Packing Cubes set comes with three different sized compression cubes and a bag for shoes or dirty laundry. The set also includes labeling cards for travelers to write the contents of each cube and then place the card into the slot on the back. We think the value is unmatched given the amount of bags in the set combined with their sturdy structure and superb compression ability.

We used the cubes to pack an entire suitcase including shoes, pants, tops, undergarments, and toiletries across the varying cube sizes. After three months of use, we especially loved the small size for packing undergarments and separating laundry. While the material isn’t water-resistant, it does feel well-made with strong stitchwork. Plus, the cubes are outfitted with metal zippers that glide smoothly to compress the bags, even when they’re packed full of clothes.

The Details: 4 bags | 7 x 5.5 x 1 inches (small), 11.5 x 8 x 1 inches (medium), 14 x 10 x 1 inches (large), 18 x 11 inches (laundry/shoe bag) | Water-resistant

Best for Group Travel

Leantravel compression packing cubes for travel, set of 3.

  • Quality 4 /5

The total weight of all three cubes is just over 1 pound.

The cubes are made of polyester which is generally less durable than nylon.

If you’re looking for packing cubes to stay organized but not to add more weight to an already packed suitcase, consider the lightweight polyester Lean Travel Premium Compression Packing Cubes. After using these for six months of use, we've decided they're truly a game changer when it comes to organized packing. Although polyester is a little less durable than nylon (typically used for packing cubes), the material has more give making it easier to squeeze a few more clothing items into the cubes. We had no issues with zippers getting snagged or stuck and the fabric feels thick enough that, if there was a spill in a suitcase, it could soak it up before reaching the clothes packed inside.

This set comes with two large and one medium-sized cube so you can easily pack clothes like jackets or jeans. While it depends on the size of your suitcase , we found that it might be easier to only pack one or two cubes in a suitcase at a time, due to the fact that the large cubes are incredibly spacious on the inside and can fit plenty of clothes, but take up a good amount of space once full. However, if you’re looking for more sizes, the brand also carries a 6-piece set that has small, medium, and large sizes, but we think the 3-piece is the perfect number for heavy packers or traveling families so you don’t have too many bags to manage.

The Details: 3 bags | 15.5 x 11.5 x 1 inches (large), 11 x 11 x 1 inches (medium) | Waterproof zipper bag included

Best for Backpacking

Suited nomad compression packing cubes.

The ripstop material is durable for even longer backpacking adventures.

Your items may wrinkle if you pack these too full.

Going on a backpacking trip and need to fit all your stuff in one rucksack? Be sure to use these compact compression cubes from Suited Nomad when packing. Each set comes with three packing cubes in varying sizes. They're made from a water-resistant, ripstop material that won't snag or tear during your travels. The cubes also have convenient top handles to make it easier to pull them in and out of your pack.

The double-zipper compression system makes them super compact and small enough to fit inside a backpack while still being roomy enough to pack all the essentials. While testing out the set, we were able to fit all three fully packed cubes into a L.L.Bean backpack ( llbean.com, $70) and still had enough room to pack other items like shoes and travel accessories .

The Details: 3 bags | 11 x 8 x 4 inches (medium), 15 x 11 x 4 inches (large, two included) | Water-resistant

Best Lightweight Cubes

Eagle creek specter compression cube set.

It opens wide, so you can easily pack all of your items neatly.

Only one bag is included, making this a pricier option.

Eagle Creek has been making traveler-loved packing organizers for more than 20 years, and the Specter line is one of the brand's newest innovations. The zippers unzip three-quarters of the way around the cube, which makes it easy to load in a lot, and then, a second set of zippers compresses the cube's size by up to 50 percent if you packed it with flexible materials. We were able to fit a full week's worth of warm-weather clothing — mostly dresses — into this medium-sized packing cube, and the smaller one is perfect for stowing for socks and undergarments.

Also, the material they're made of is incredibly lightweight and it's water-resistant, too, so your clothes won't get ruined if your toiletry bag happens to spring a leak. The best thing about these cubes is how easy they are to use and how durable they are.

The Details: 1 bag | 10 x 13.5 x 3.25 inches | Water-resistant

Other Compression Packing Cubes We Liked

While we tried several sets of compression packing cubes, the two highlighted below almost made our list for the best compression packing cubes but they fell short due to a few flaws during testing.

Bagail Compression Packing Cubes : The material felt soft and the bags boasted spacious capacities, but the quality was questionable due to flimsy zippers and stressed stitchwork when the bag was packed.

Tripped Compression Packing Cubes for Travel : The set of cubes have water-resistant exteriors and solid storage capacities, but the $50 price seems a bit too high considering the zippers and stitching felt weak.

We tested 23 sets of packing cubes in our New York City lab and found there were several sets of compression-specific packing cubes that had stellar performances during our tests where we rated the cubes on a scale of one to five based on capacity, design, and quality.

After unboxing the packing cubes, we thoroughly examined the quality of each bag by twisting and pulling on the cubes with it zipped and open to see how the material and stitchwork held up with some pressure. The cubes scoring highest for quality appeared to be made with durable materials and stitching, and had smooth and tough zippers. Then, we packed the cubes full of clothes, undergarments, shoes, and toiletries to judge the capacity of the varying-sized cubes. It was during this test that we evaluated the consolidation ability of the compression cubes by pressing the air out of each bag and closing the compression zipper before we placed the cubes into a standard carry-on suitcase. Our favorite compression cubes for capacity were able to fit a solid amount of items and zipped down easily.

All of our top-performing compression cubes had sleek designs that helped us pack in an organized and efficient way, and saved a noticeable amount of space in the carry-on with room leftover for other items, if desired. We splashed water on the outside of each cube to see how protective the material was, since many of the brands we tested claimed the bags were waterproof or water-resistant. Lastly, we were unaware of the cost of each set of compression packing cubes and were only made aware of the price after testing was completed to judge the value based on its performance.

After testing the packing cubes in our lab, we sent each set home with testers to use during their real-world travels. Over a period of six months, we checked in with the testers to see how the compression cubes were performing and updated this article accordingly.

Tips for Buying Compression Packing Cubes

Consider how many you want.

There are plenty of packing cube sets ranging from one to six (or more!) cubes included. For travelers looking to fill a carry-on or checked bag with cubes, we recommend getting a set with multiple bags in varying sizes to get the best value. If you’re planning to pack boots or a bulky jacket, a single compression cube could do the trick without having to buy a whole set.

Look for high-quality materials

Most of the compression cubes we tested were made of nylon which is known for being an ultra-durable material for soft goods like sports bags and suitcases. Polyester is lighter in weight than nylon but it’s a little less durable than nylon.

Check the dimensions

Before you purchase a set of compression packing cubes or a single one, double-check the dimensions of each bag to ensure that they will fit in your preferred suitcase. Some large or extra-large packing cubes could work great in a checked bag but they might take up a lot of room in a carry-on or not fit in a duffel bag at all.

Depending on the type of packing cube, some are machine-washable. If it’s not listed in the product description before or after you purchase it, you can always spot clean the fabric with soap and water, and then let it air dry before using the cube or storing it for your next trip.

Both regular and compression packing cubes are designed to organize the items you need to pack in a suitcase, but compression packing cubes are designed to release the air inside of the bag to consolidate the items down to a flattened packing cube. Compression cubes are best suited for travelers looking to save space in a suitcase, especially for packing jackets, jeans, or other larger items that take up a lot of space.

Best Compression Bags for Travel – Overview

There are three common types of compression bags. There are zip-top bags, simple drawstring sacks, and buckled nylon bags. The first type — thick zip-top plastic bags work by either rolling the packed bag in such a way that the remaining air flows through a one-way valve or using a vacuum to remove trapped air. The most common compression bags, the drawstring pack are perfect for sleeping bags but do not have the best clothes compression. And then there are nylon plastic bags with buckles — one of the better carrying choices for clothes. They are square or rectangular form and is ideal for clothes packing, and their buckles essentially allow you to compress your clothes best.

Buying Guide

Ideally, you want to use a lightweight bag that is around 20% or less of the total weight for packing. Something more than that can leave you concerned about getting it completely packed until it’s checked in under the weight cap. Moreover, because the bag weighs more it places you at a disadvantage for how many things you can carry with you.

Because most compression sacks are made of nylon, they already have some sort of water-resistance. Nevertheless, considering the volatile traveling conditions, it’s better to buy waterproof, particularly if you have a larger compression sack as your main luggage type.

As for everything else, when it comes to compression bags, you get what you pay for. Aside from the reasons listed above, the other aspect you want to remember is when and how much you’ll need a compression pack. If you pay less than $10, you ‘re still going to be able to pack your baggage just as easily as if you were going to invest 10 times that price, but it’s not going to last quite as long. You often run the risk of losing or ripping the bag during your journey and locating a substitute quickly will be challenging depending on your destination.

Another issue that is mentioned occasionally using compression bags for travel is the breaking of the seams. Because you are going to compress and put stress on these stitches, the performance of the stitching is also significant. For a compression block to break mid-journey, it may be a major pain between your travels. Without a functioning compression bag, you may not be able to fit anything in your bag. Ideally, the material must be durable enough to survive the natural conditions, as well as to resist rips and breaks.

Compression Type

The more common are external adjustable straps that allow you to compress the bag manually, with air fleeing through the top closure. Alternate solutions often operate for an air purging system that uses a fabric that is waterproof but air-permeable. For the purging method, the permeable content helps air to escape when you pack and compress the bag, which probably makes compression more lightweight and effective.

Frequently Ask Questions

What is a compression bag used for.

Compression bags are used to cut bigger items, such as clothes or sleeping bags, on size and weight. Compression bags allow you to cram more stuff into your luggage by eliminating excess air and limiting things to the minimum amount of space available. Compression bags are nice to organize and conserve space, but they are difficult to open in a hurry.

Are compression bags good for travel?

They are very good for travel if you intend on bringing a lot of items like clothes for your travel or backpacking trip. But if you don’t anticipate a lot of bulky items, then a packing cube might be more suited for you.

How do you travel with a compression bag?

To use a standard travel compression bag (those that look like a giant zip loc bag), fold, don’t roll, your clothing. Before closing, roll the bag like a giant toothpaste tube to get all the air out of it. Seal off, flatten, and pack up. Wash them with dish soap and a towel to scrub.

Do compression bags reduce weight?

No, they might compress your bulky clothes but they actually add a bit of weight. Although it won’t be much so this shouldn’t be a concern if you’re trying to save on weight since the weight add would be minimal.

We hope this guide was helpful for finding the best compression bags for travel as well as our guide on features to look for in a compression bag for travel. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this guide, feel free to let us know in the comments section.

  • Small:  27 x 19 x 8 cms (2 pieces)
  • Slim-Medium:  36 x 25 x 8 cms
  • Medium:  36 x 25 x 12 cms (2 pieces)
  • Large:  43 x 33 x 12 cms (2 pieces)
  • Small tube: 27 x 14 x 8cms
  • Large tube: 38 x 14 x 12cms

What we love: Lightweight, variety of sizes and affordable. Build your own bundles are also available if you prefer specific sizes.

What to consider:  No compression zipper.

Available in a multi-colour or mono-colour set this 10 piece bundle gives is enough to turn you into the Marie Kondo of travellers.

Made from a tough rip-stop nylon and see-through nylon mesh, they are water resistant for those unexpected spills and have a grab webbing handles for when you need to pull it out from the furthest reaches of your backpack or suitcase.

If the see-through mesh pannelling wasn't helpful enough, each packing cubes has a #tagit label window for you to remind yourself of what's inside.

Over 1600 globetrotters have fallen in love with these cubes praising its ease of use, quality and convenience. "I was so impressed by the strength of this mesh," says one five star review. "I like the multiple sizes, the fact that they open out flat for neat packing in the larger ones, and the slot for a tag. These cubes are a game changer for me for bigger trips where I'm taking more stuff," says another.

Best packing cubes (runner-up)

Peak Design Packing Cubes, Amazon, from $55.91 (small)

Peak Design Packing Cubes. Picture: Peak Design

  • Small: 32 x 17 x 8cms (compressed), 32 x 17 x 17cms (expanded)
  • Medium: 32 x 32 x 8cms (compressed), 32 x 32 x 17cms (expanded)
  • Shoe pouch: 32 x 17 x 17cms

What we love: The compression zipper works similar to that on a suitcase where you can open it up for more space and then zip it back down to squeeze the air out and condense it. You can also purchase a single cube if that's all you really need.

What to consider: On top of the premium price (a small alone costs almost $60!) Peak Design stock moves quickly and you may have to waitlist your cube.

Lauded for its rip-resistant, waterproof material and expansion/compression zipper, Peak Design’s packing cubes have found its way onto Best Packing Cube lists on Pack Hacker , The Strategist and Gear Patrol .

Stylishly designed, they are self healing (i.e. bounce back after being  crushed), have top and bottom handles and are backed by a lifetime warranty.

This set of three cubes comes is features a fast tear away zip mechanism for super-quick access. They also boast dual storage zones with an adjustable divider to separate your clean and dirty clothing.

Best compression packing cubes

Samsonite Compression Packing Bags, 12 piece, Amazon, $27.18

Samsonite Compression Packing Bags, 12 piece. Picture: Amazon

  • Pouch: 29.2 x 34.3cm (2 pieces)
  • Small: 34.3 x 49.5cm (4 pieces)
  • Medium: 45.7 x 57.2cm (4 pieces)
  • Large: 59.7 X 80cm (2 pieces)

What we love: When compressed properly, each compression cube is airtight and waterproof.

What to consider: These are rolling compression packing cubes and only two of them have the functionality for vacuum sealing. Personally I've found that while rolling can be effective (and much easier when travelling) it won't suck quite as much air out as a vacuum compatible compression cube.

When I moved overseas the best thing I had were compression bags. They sucked all the air out of my clothes so I could pack so much more into your suitcase. This Samsonite compression packing cube kit comes with 12 cubes of various sizes (one pouch size, four carry on size, four suitcase size and two large dual size), and are completely clear so you don't have to undo all your good work to find the items you need.

They've already massed over 2000 positive reviews on Amazon, making them some of the best compression cubes widely available.

"Totally worth the money", says one Amazon customer. "Holds a LOT of stuff!" says another. You heard them - get ready to save space!

  • Large: 39 x 38 x 9cm
  • Slim: 33 x 10 x 9cm
  • Laundry bag: 46 x 33cm

What we love: A wide variety of sizes and a compression zip, so you don't have to roll or vacuum the air out.

What to consider: Expensive compared to other options on this list.

The perfect mix of variety and quality, each cube in this set comes with compression zip to pack more into your holiday and features anti-rip mesh for durability. The breathable mesh is partially see-through to easily identify its contents and there's even a laundry bag to separate your dirty clothes.

Over 6000 positive reviews give it an average 4.6 star rating with customers loving its quality, versatility and value.

"Good quality and lightweight. The packing cubes organised my belongings in my luggage, making it easy to find things and easy to compress into my bag. I bought more for my family. Two thumbs up!" says one Australian customer.

  • Small:  17 x 11 x 10cm
  • Medium:  22 x 15 x 12.5cm
  • Large:  32 x 20 x 17cm

What we love: The smallest of these ultralight cubes weighs just 16g while the largest ultralight packing cube is only 30g, which is fantastic news for backpackers and light travellers.

What to consider: The smallest and cheapest ultralight packing cube here costs $24, which may be out of some people's budgets.

Don't be fooled by the thin fabrics on these packing cubes, “the material is incredibly sturdy,” assured one customer in their Amazon review. “It does not rip nor the zipper break no matter how much you stuff in them… and boy can you get a lot in them!” they said.

Well, this is the Osprey brand afterall, one of the biggest names in lightweight backpacks . Naturally, you can expect their lightweight cubes to be just as effective.

  • Extra Large: 42 x 32 x 12cm

What we love: They're a bang on bargain, costing less than $3 per cube.

What to consider: None of these cubes have a compression zipper.

Tried and tested by checkout Consumer Technology Reporter Lauren Chaplin

As a chronic overpacker, packing cubes were high up on my list of things I sorely needed. But when I started looking around, I discovered some packing cube brands were charging over $50 for a set of four, which was an expense I just didn't need. Then I found this Nineway set on Amazon.

This set comes with four travel cubes of various sizes, along with a shoe bag, toiletries bag, electronics bag, a zippered bag for medications and small bits and bobs, and a drawstring bag for your dirty laundry - all for less than $25.

Each packing cube has a mesh top for freshness and visibility, and buckles to secure over your gear, helping you to save even more space. The cubes have also been designed to neatly nest inside each other, minimising storage space when not in use, which is super convenient.

I’ve taken my cubes on three separate trips now (two overseas and one domestic) and they’ve been absolute lifesavers every time, helping me to cram more into my suitcase and keep my things clean and organised.

Tried and tested by Escape Editorial Production Manager Alessandra Allegretti

This Gautio set comes with eight bags and costs just a smidge over $20.  "They made organising my clothing into categories far easier and kept my suitcase mess-free," says Alessandra.

Included in the set are four packing cubes of various sizes, a toiletry bag, shoe bag, drawstring laundry bag and a zipped case that she is "perfect" for make-up.

Best packing cubes with mesh panels

Lapoche Luggage Organiser 4pk, Lapoche, $99.95

Lapoche Luggage Organiser 4pk. Picture: Lapoche

  • Small: 20 x 30 x 10cm (2 pieces)
  • Medium: 30 x 40 x 10cm
  • Large: 40 x 50 x 10cm

What we love: Available in four different colourways, choose the one to suit your aesthetic. Fun kids' designs and sizes are also available.

What to consider:  There's no compression zipper.

Mesh is one of the most popular materials for packing cubes. It's light, flexible, breathable and partially see-through allowing you to view its contents without having to undo all your fantastic folding/rolling/burrito-ing (whichever you prefer).

Practically a household name for organising your travels, Lapoche is one of the best for quality and usability.

The Luggage Organiser set has four packing cubes each with a partial mesh panel, double zippers and a large grab carry handle. Made of durable recycled rPET material this pack has two small cubes, one medium cube and one large cube and comes with a five year warranty.

  • Large (26L): 40 x 30 x 23cm

What we love: It comes with a waterproof LITE Gear Pouch to protect your essentials such as your tech, credit cards and passport.

What to consider: Bee Nesting isn't widely available in Australia. You can only purchase it from Amazon and a few other specialty stores.

Weatherproofing your essentials while staying organised is a cinch with Be Nesting's weatherproof compression packing cubes. This set of four cubes are made of 210D waterproof ripstop nylon and 40D waterproof PU coated nylon to keep that water out. If that wasn't enough all seams are reinforced by double stitching for years of wear and tear.

The compression zippers are built tough and work a charm, with one customer saying that "even when crammed full" they could still compress it further. The double-sided storage design is also a nice touch, letting you separate your clean clothes from your wet and dirties.

Amazon customers praise its quality, remarking on how sturdy and durable the zippers and fabric are.

Best clear packing cubes

Packing Cube - Classic Clear Cell 3pk, Kathmandu, $49.98

Packing Cube - Classic Clear Cell 3pk. Picture: Kathmandu

  • Small: 16.5 x 13 x 5cm
  • Medium: 21 x 14.5 x 5cm
  • Large: 26 x 16.5 x 5cm

What we love: They're durable and the material thick to protect your belongings.

What to consider: They're quite small and shallow (only 5cm deep) and are best suited for smaller items like toiletries and medication or for separating single outfits.

"Good quality and [the] perfect size to keep clothes tidy and organised" these three packing cubes from Kathmandu have clear front panels to take the guesswork out of unpacking.

Because we all know no matter how hard we try to remember where we put everything, holiday-brain messes things up.

The outer fabric of these three cubes is made from recycled materials which is an eco-friendly bonus. Something to keep in mind is that they are small (the largest is only 26cm long) and are rigid and are best for overnight trips or small items such as intimates or toiletries.

Go Travel Twin Packing Cubes in Blue. Picture: Amazon

  • Large: 40 x 28.8 x 5cm

What we love: Each has a full mesh panel at the top to easily identify its contents.

What to consider: It's not a compression cube and is more about organising your suitcase rather than saving space.

Large enough to lay side-by-side in your carry on, Go Travel's large packing cubes are ideal for bulky garments or shirts that you don't want to wind up wrinkled in your suitcase. They have a mesh panel, full length cover and a quick grab handle.

"Very handy, so glad I bought them, keeps everything nice and neat," says one 5-star review.

How we chose the best packing cubes on this list

Our team of experienced writers, travellers and packers spend hours researching the best packing cubes. We find out what factors make a good packing cube by putting our packing skills to the test, reviewing test results and analysing thousands of customer reviews.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of compression packing bags, particularly on long backpacking trips where you need to make the space work for you. I also love packing cubes or bags that you can throw all my dirty laundry in, and then dump them straight into the washing machine when I get home.

How to choose the best packing cubes for you

The concept behind packing cubes is simple - they're cubes or cells to better organise your luggage. But features can vary greatly. Ideally when shopping for the right packing cube for you, you'll want to consider size, material, compression and style.

I've included sizes for each of the packing cubes on this list because when it comes to packing cubes, size really does matter. Firstly, you'll want packing cubes that work nicely with your suitcase. Too many large cubes and your Tetris falls apart. A good variety is best and packing cubes with a more flexible material will be more forgiving to those of us who aren't Tetris masters.

Secondly, size matters for what you're packing. You don't want to attempt to squeeze a pair of jeans into a small packing cube, for example. Consider what your outfits look like or pile them in front of you for a visual aid of how many small, medium and large cubes you may require.

Most packing cubes are made from a lightweight nylon that is durable and flexible. Some packing cubes are made from a thicker plastic which is waterproof but is much more rigid, making it more suitable for a hardcase rather than backpack or duffle bag.

Compression

Compression packing cubes work a bit like that expander on your suitcase. You open it up to a maximum size to pack as much as you can in. Then, you sit on it (or in this case, push it down) and use the compression zippers to squeeze it all back to its original size.

By utilising compressible packing cubes you'll be saving space however having a double zipper is more expensive as it requires more workmanship.

Packing cube style

On top of small, medium and large packing cubes, you'll discover inventive sizes as shapes for different functions. Some sets include a clothing folder for dress shirts, shoe bag for your footwear, laundry bag for your dirty clothes, fabric pouch for personal items, and waterproof toiletry bag.

Are packing cubes worth it?

Packing cubes can turn a messy suitcase into an organised dream. If you're a chronic overpacker or the sort of person to throw your clothes into your luggage only to find yourself unpacking  everything  just to find that one shirt or pair of underwear, packing cubes can help give you enough space for everything you need while making finding that perfect outfit easier.

That said, if you're already fairly organised and have a good system running, you may find packing cubes don't add as much benefit.

How do I pack efficiently using packing cubes?

As a packing cube fiend, I recommend either packing your items in groups or in outfits.

In groups:  Put all your intimates into a small cube or medium slim cube, all your t-shirts and shorts in a roomy medium cube, and all your dresses and shirts into a large packing cube. Use a separate shoe bag for your footwear.

In outfits:  If you're planning to wear specific outfits, I roll the pieces up together (burrito-style to reduce wrinkles) and pop them into individual packing cubes from there.

As for unpacking your travel cubes?  Travel writer Amanda Woods  says "When I settle into a room I simply put the cells into drawers, unzip the top and voila! Neatly packed drawers with my things. When it's time to move on it takes mere seconds to zip up and go."

Do packing cubes help prevent wrinkles in clothing?

A few brands of packing cubes such as the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter say they minimise wrinkles, and while they can, a lot of it comes down to the way you pack.

Loose clothes that are thrown into your case tumble around with movement and develop wrinkles.

Organising them into packing cubes keep them in place to prevent this.

By rolling your clothes (as opposed to folding) this can also reduce wrinkles. Avoiding overpacking to give your clothes room to breathe is another great way to prevent wrinkles.

What is the difference between packing cubes and compression cubes?

The main difference between a standard packing cube and a compression packing cube is that compression cubes have a second zip to squish everything down into a smaller size.

While compression packing cubes are more space-saving, many reviews say they increase wrinkling. Compression cubes are generally more expensive.

If you want a cheaper option, plastic compression bags ( like the Samsonite travel bags mentioned above ), remove air either by sucking it out with a vacuum cleaner or rolling it out. This style of compression cubes seal with a plastic ziplock to keep the air from seeping out.

Do packing cubes make luggage heavier?

Packing cubes are designed to be lightweight, with some of the lightest like the Osprey Packs Ultralight cubes which weigh as little as 16 grams. Hardly a deal-breaker.

However, you might find that an ability to compress more may cause you to pack more (oops!) which is where your luggage might start to tip the scales.

How many packing cubes do I need and what size is best?

If you are new to packing cubes and cells, there are lots of brands that sets with different sizes.

Generally, you will need larger ones for bulkier items like jeans, jumpers and t-shirts and smaller ones for socks and underwear or beach wear.

There are also packing cubes made especially for shoes and sets that include a laundry bag for your dirty items.

A good way to determine the number of packing cubes you might need is to organise your luggage into separate piles. This way you can see how many as well as the sizes that work for you.

  • 28 Feb 2019

You may have been besotted with Kmart’s cheap packing cubes that make travelling a breeze, but Big W now stocks a luxury travel range that can compete against the likes of Samsonite.

Big W are putting themselves back on traveller’s radar by stocking the highly-reviewed Globite brand , a heritage brand that specialises in designer-quality travel goods at affordable prices.

The affordable retailer is selling the fancy packing cubes for $25 for a three-pack, which is cheaper than buying them direct from Globite. The packing cubes are available in pink, purple, navy blue, red, bright blue, green and grey.

Big W packing cubes globite

Customers on the Globite website have reviewed the packing cubes and claimed they are 'the best ever'.

“I have bought other packing items and none compare for the quality, great sizing options and ease of packing and durability,” one customer wrote.

“Priceless,” posted another. “I don’t know how I could have coped living out of a suitcase for six weeks without these treasures.”
