Celebrity Cruises ships from newest to oldest — a complete list

Gene Sloan

What's the newest Celebrity Cruises ship? If you're thinking about booking a trip with Celebrity, it's a good thing to find out.

The newest Celebrity ship is typically also the Celebrity ship with the most bells and whistles and the most up-to-date venues, including cabins, restaurants, bars and attractions. It's what you want if you desire the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your Celebrity Cruises vacation.

Right now, the newest Celebrity cruise ship is Celebrity Beyond. It just debuted in April 2022.

Although Celebrity Beyond is barely more than a year old, it'll soon be supplanted as the newest Celebrity Cruises vessel by Celebrity Ascent — a very similar vessel in the same Edge-class series of ships as Celebrity Beyond. Celebrity Ascent begins sailing in December 2023.

For more cruise guides, reviews and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Other relatively new Celebrity cruise ships include Celebrity Apex , Celebrity Flora and Celebrity Edge . All began sailing in the last five years.

In all, Celebrity Cruises operates 15 vessels. On average, the line comes out with a new ship every two years, and it typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 30 years before retiring them from the fleet. The oldest Celebrity ship, Celebrity Millennium, is 23 years old.

In general, Celebrity's newest ships are bigger and packed with more venues than its older ships. If you are looking for Celebrity ships with the most restaurants, bars, lounges and other amenities, you'll want to stick to vessels built in the last few years.

Related: 4 types of Celebrity Cruises ships, explained

That said, the above is a generalization that comes with an asterisk. One of Celebrity's newest ships, Celebrity Flora, is also one of its smallest ships.

With room for just 100 passengers, Celebrity Flora is one of three very small vessels in the Celebrity fleet that operate year-round tours in the Galapagos. It's essentially an entirely different business for Celebrity than the mainstream, big-ship cruising that is at the core of the company.

Celebrity is, in a sense, two cruise lines in one: a big-ship brand with 12 vessels that carry 2,000 to 3,000 passengers and sail around the world, and a Galapagos cruise tour operator with three tiny vessels that carry just 16 to 100 people. We include all of the vessels in this guide.

Here, every Celebrity Cruises ship currently in operation is ranked from newest to oldest:

What is the newest Celebrity Cruises ship?

The newest Celebrity cruise ship is Celebrity Beyond. As noted above, it debuted in April 2022. Measuring 141,420 gross tons, it's also the biggest cruise ship in the Celebrity fleet.

What is the oldest Celebrity Cruises ship?

The oldest Celebrity cruise ship is Celebrity Millennium. It was unveiled in 2000, right at the turn of the millennium (hence its name).

What new Celebrity Cruises ships are coming?

Celebrity Cruises currently has two new cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Celebrity Ascent in December 2023. It will be followed by an as yet unnamed vessel in 2025.

The two Celebrity Cruises ships on order will be the fourth and fifth ships in Celebrity's Edge-class series of vessels that began debuting in 2018. The first three ships in the series are Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Beyond.

The Edge-class vessels are being built at the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.

Related: 5 things to love about Celebrity Beyond

What is the newest Celebrity Cruises ship available for booking?

Celebrity Ascent is the newest Celebrity Cruises ship that you can book right now. While Celebrity Ascent isn't yet sailing, its initial sailings scheduled for December 2023 are already on sale, as are future sailings through April 2025. The other, as yet unnamed Celebrity Cruises ship on order for delivery in 2025 has yet to open for bookings.

What is the newest class of Celebrity Cruises ships?

The Edge class is the newest class of Celebrity Cruises ships. Currently in the midst of rolling out, it'll be made up of at least five vessels.

The first Edge-class vessel, Celebrity Edge, debuted in 2018. Two more — Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Beyond — began sailing in 2020 and 2022, respectively.

The last two ships in the series currently on order, Celebrity Ascent and an as yet unnamed sister vessel, are due in December 2023 and sometime in 2025, respectively.

The Edge-class vessels aren't just the newest ships in the Celebrity fleet but are also the most advanced vessels in the Celebrity fleet. Designed to carry 2,908 to 3,260 passengers apiece at double occupancy, they each have such innovative new features as "infinite veranda" cabins with outward-facing walls that are entirely made of glass.

Another innovative feature of the Edge-class ships is the 90-ton platform along the side of each of the vessels called the Magic Carpet. As big as a tennis court, the platforms are cantilevered over the side of the vessels and can be raised and lowered to serve different functions — from a waterside bar to a water shuttle boarding area.

What's the difference between newer and older Celebrity Cruises ships?

Newer Celebrity Cruises ships generally are bigger than older Celebrity ships — in some cases by as much as 35% bigger. As a result, they have room for more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels.

On Celebrity's newest and biggest Edge-class vessel, Celebrity Beyond, for instance, you'll find an expanded resort-within-a-resort area for suite passengers called The Retreat that isn't on the smaller vessels in the Edge-class series or on other older ships in the Celebrity fleet. It offers a new two-story sun deck with hot tubs, lounge chairs and private cabanas that are open exclusively to passengers staying in suites.

Celebrity Beyond also has 179 more cabins than its sister vessels, each of which has 1,467 cabins. As a result, it holds 3,260 passengers at double occupancy. That's up from a 2,910-passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Apex and a 2,908-passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Edge.

Celebrity's oldest Millennium-class ships, by contrast, only carry about 2,100 passengers at double occupancy. As a result, they have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships.

That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try Celebrity but isn't eager to travel with big crowds. The oldest ships in the Celebrity fleet thus appeal to a subset of Celebrity fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive per day to sail on.

Celebrity's three very small Galapagos-based vessels have the most intimate feel of all. They are like tiny boutique hotels that float.

Note that all Celebrity ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest Celebrity cruise vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

Celebrity Cruises names fleet's newest ship Celebrity Ascent in Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale

CruiseMapper logo

Celebrity Cruises formally christened its latest vessel, now officially known as Celebrity Ascent .

The noteworthy occasion featured co-Godmothers Captain Sandy Yawn, renowned from Bravo TV's Below Deck franchise, and her sister Michelle Dunham, Founder of the Jacksonville School for Autism. In adherence to maritime tradition, they performed the naming ceremony by breaking a champagne bottle on the ship's hull.

Accompanying this event were Greek brothers Captain Dimitrios Kafetzis and Captain Tasos Kafetzis, appointed as Co-Captains of Celebrity Ascent – a groundbreaking move for both the brand and the industry.

The ceremony befit a ship that challenges conventional cruising norms with an innovative design crafted by leading architects and interior designers. Boasting culinary excellence from Michelin-starred chefs, extensive onboard entertainment, and more, Celebrity Ascent sets herself apart.

Embarking on her inaugural Caribbean season, Ascent will depart from Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale on December 3 for a 7-night Eastern Caribbean voyage, encompassing popular destinations like St. Maarten , St. Thomas , and the Dominican Republic.

Celebrity Ascent is part of an exceptional fleet, sharing a sisterhood with Celebrity Beyond , which garnered acclaim upon her debut last year.

After her maiden voyage, Celebrity Ascent will offer a range of alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries until late April.

Subsequently, Ascent will set sail for the Mediterranean, departing from homeports Barcelona  and Civitavecchia-Rome .

“The Edge Series has shattered preconceived notions of cruising and I am thrilled to announce our next bold step as a brand with Celebrity Xcel,” said Celebrity Cruises’ president Laura Hodges Bethge. “True to her name, this next ship will ‘Xcel’ beyond her sister ships with entirely new experiences yet to be revealed, but that will change the game all over again.”

Celebrity Cruises’ President Laura Hodges Bethge, said: “The Edge Series has shattered preconceived notions of cruising, and I am thrilled to announce our next bold step as a brand with Celebrity Xcel.”

Like its sister ship Celebrity Ascent, debuting later this month, Celebrity Xcel will connect guests to the breath-taking world around them like never before. Celebrity Cruises Announces New Brand Positioning

  • April 8, 2024

Celebrity Apex in Bodrum

Celebrity Cruises is introducing “Nothing Comes Close,” the company’s new brand positioning and brand identity, set to launch globally on April 8.

“Nothing Comes Close” will be the focus of the cruise line’s brand positioning from media and advertising, to travel advisors and onboard.

“Our guests tell us that Celebrity vacations are unparalleled. From the thoughtfulness of our crew to the excitement of entertainment and activities, guests tell us that ‘Nothing Comes Close’ to the way we make them feel,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “Our new brand position packages this feeling in a memorable and compelling way.”

Employing a technique coined “True Eye View”, Celebrity’s new visual approach captures the essence of a Celebrity vacation from the perspective of guests.

“This isn’t just a brand campaign. This is who we are. It embodies the spirit of what sets a Celebrity Cruises vacation apart,” said Michael Scheiner, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Celebrity Cruises. “The creative direction captures and conveys the elevated emotions and transformative experiences that guests enjoy from the moment they step onboard Celebrity Cruises, where every detail is elevated beyond their expectations.”

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Size, Age and Class (2022)

Celebrity Edge Departs STX Shipyard, Saint-Nazaire

Celebrity Cruises has an active fleet of fifteen ships currently with two further ships on order ( Celebrity Ascent and another Edge-class ship, currently unnamed).

In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Celebrity Cruises fleet and how they compare to each other.

Introduction to Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises was actually founded in 1988 in Greece, by the shipping company Chandris Group. Originally they were conducting upmarket cruises to Bermuda.

In 1997, Royal Caribbean International acquired Celebrity Cruises and during the same year, the five ships became six with the addition of Celebrity Mercury .

By 2000, the start of the brand new fleet was beginning to arrive – this was the Millennium Class ships, which began with Celebrity Millennium in 2000 and was followed by three additional ships ( Celebrity Infinity , Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Constellation ).

After that, Celebrity created the Solstice-class, which consisted of five ships. These proved extremely popular and Celebrity actually went back and ‘Solsticized’ the rest of their fleet to bring the other ships up to the same passenger experience.

In 2018, Celebrity Edge debuted with a non-traditional cruise ship bow (a Parabolic Ultra-Bow, if you may!) and The Magic Carpet (an open-air dining experience attached to the side of the ship that can move from the bottom to the top of the ship if needed and act as a platform during tender operations)

Celebrity Cruises’ Ships Frequently Asked Questions

Celebrity Beyond is the newest Celebrity Cruises’ ship – she joined the fleet in April 2022.

What Celebrity ship is Captain Kate on?

Captain Kate McCue is currently on Celebrity Beyond as Master of the ship.

What Celebrity ship goes to Alaska?

Celebrity Eclipse , Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Millennium all sail in the Alaska region.

What is the biggest Celebrity ship?

Celebrity Beyond became the biggest ship of the Celebrity Cruises fleet in April 2022

What is the smallest Celebrity ship?

Celebrity Xploration is the smallest ship of the fleet at 319 GRT and carrying just 16 passengers. This ship is part of their Xpedition-class ships.

What is the oldest Celebrity ship?

Celebrity Millennium is the oldest ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. She joined the fleet in 2000.

Who owns Celebrity Cruises?

Celebrity Cruises is a Royal Caribbean brand, having been acquired by them in 1997 from the Greek-owned Chandris Group.

What type of bow does Celebrity Edge have?

Celebrity Edge has a Parabolic ultra bow. A curved rather than pointed bow that actually encapsulates the traditional bulbous bow as seen on ships usually. It offers a 20% greater energy efficiency.

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all celebrity cruises’ ships new builds.

Just two of the Celebrity’s ships were built and owned by other cruise lines before being acquired by Celebrity Cruises.

The two ships are Celebrity Xpedition (previously Sun Bay for Sun Bay Cruises) and Celebrity Xploration (previously Athala II for Ocean Adventures)

Both of these are quite different ships from your usual cruise ships, they are expedition ships. This means they are much smaller and have very different passenger and operational needs because they operate in much shallower, confined waters and must adhere to even stricter environmental laws in these regions.

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

What is the difference between the edge-class ships.

Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex are both identical ships. However, Celebrity Beyond is an extra 20 meters longer and has one additional deck. This brings 179 more suites and staterooms to the ship, a bigger (40%) sundeck at The Retreat and the Sunset Bar is 180% larger.

Celebrity Ascent is due to match Celebrity Beyond in terms of size and capacity.

What is the difference between the Xpedition-class ships?

The three Xpedition-class ships that Celebrity Cruises own are all custom-built ships, with Celebrity Xploration previously operating as Athala II for Ocean Adventures.

  • Celebrity Xpedition is 90m long and carries 48 passengers
  • Celebrity Xploration is 30m long and carries 16 passengers
  • Celebrity Flora is 102m long and carries 100 passengers

Celebrity Xpedition had its capacity reduced from 100 passengers to just 48 passengers when Celebrity Flora launched. This is to meet the Ecuador permit requirements for cruising in the Galapagos region as Celebrity Cruises only has a permit to carry 164 passengers at any one time in the Galapagos region.

Celebrity Flora is the newest of the Xpedition-class and offers just forty suites – all of which have a private balcony. The ship has six decks and has a max cruising speed of just 12 knots.

Final Thoughts

Celebrity Cruises are known for its stylish cruise ships and fantastic service. A more premium version of parent company Royal Caribbean’s offerings some would say, Celebrity aim to make cruising trendy for those who would never consider cruising.

Their Edge-class ships, with famous designers and celebrity tie-ins, aim to break to entice those that enjoy luxury hotels and travel but are yet to experience a cruise and those that like both!

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

celebrity cruises new ship name

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.

Donald Trump came face-to-face with former ally David Pecker at his Manhattan hush money trial Monday, but the former president notably didn’t make eye contact as Pecker took the witness stand.

Pecker — the former National Enquirer publisher — was the first person to testify against Trump, 77, as the historic trial kicked off Monday morning, marking the first time a US president has ever faced a criminal case .

Pecker, 72 — wearing a dark gray suit, yellow tie and his distinctive slicked back silver hair and mustache — didn’t meet Trump’s gaze on his way to and from the stand.

He also avoided press cameras by coming through the side door of the courtroom typically used by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The former commander-in-chief appeared to be actively listening during the start of Pecker’s testimony—— including chatting and passing notes to his lawyer.

David Pecker drawn by a courtroom sketch artist.

Pecker’s brief stint on the stand Monday lasted for roughly 20 minutes, as court was let out early so a juror could attend an emergency dental appointment and to give people sufficient time to prepare for the Jewish holiday of passover — which starts Monday evening.

On Pecker’s way out of the courtroom, he gave a slight nod in the direction of the defense table, though it wasn’t clear who he was acknowledging.

He’s due back in court Tuesday morning to continue testifying.

It is not immediately clear what the current status of Trump and Pecker’s relationship is, and if they are still pals. Pecker acknowledged Monday he had been subpoenaed to appear at the trial.

Prosecutors in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office told jurors during opening statements Monday morning how they claim Pecker helped Trump cook up three so-called “catch-and-kill schemes” — buying exclusive rights to potentially damaging stories and then never publishing them — to help Trump hide damaging information in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election.

Pecker hsn’t yet been asked about allegedly huddling with Trump and his ex-lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen at Trump Tower in 2015, when the prosecution claims they came up with the scheme to identify and silence damaging stories about Trump.

But Pecker did give jurors some insight into his time running the supermarket tabloid when he was CEO of its parent company American Media Inc.

“Being in the publishing industry for 40 years, I realized early in my career that the only thing that was important was the cover of the magazine,” Pecker told the jury.

And he explained how reporters at his organization could not spend more than $10,000 on a story for the National Enquirer without his approval.

Anything over that amount would need to be vetted for approval, he testified.

Donald Trump

“I had the final say on the celebrity side on the magazine,” Pecker added.

Prosecutor Matthew Colangelo during openings said Pecker paid $30,000 to a former Trump Tower doorman, Dino Sajudin, to keep him from repaeating claims Trump had a child with a former housekeeper. The story turned out to be totally false.

Pecker also paid former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal $150,000 to stop her story from going public that she allegedly had an affair with Trump while he was married, Colangelo claimed.

Pecker will likely be grilled about the arrangements for those two deals on Tuesday.

Trump is also accused of having Cohen pay $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels to stop her from publicly revealing her claims she once slept with a married Trump.

David Pecker

After, Trump allegedly logged reimbursement payments to Cohen — for fronting the money to Daniels — as legal expenses, which Colangelo told jurors is the illegal cover-up and why Trump is charged with falsifying business records.

The Big Apple real estate tycoon orchestrated a “criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 president election,” Colangelo said. “He then covered up that conspiracy by lying in his New York business records, by lying over and over again.”

In his own opening remarks, Trump lawyer Todd Blanche told the jury his client was “cloaked in innocence.”

“President Trump did not commit any crimes. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office should never have brought this case,” Blanche said.

“There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence an election. It’s called democracy,” he added.

Over the course of the six-week trial Cohen is expected to testify as the prosecution’s star witness. Daniels is also likely to testify.

But Blanche painted them both as liars whose words can’t be trusted — calling Cohen an ex-con who is “obsessed” with going after the ex-president and Daniels, a hungry opportunist, who allegedly attempting to “extort” Trump for her payment.

As to Daniels, “her testimony, while salacious, does not matter,” Blanche said.

At the end of trial Monday, Trump stood up and slowly sauntered out of the room, his eye scanning the row of reporters, but saying nothing.

He then gave a speech outside the court about how the trial, which he has to attend, is stopping him from hitting the campaign trail.
