Gorillaz announce headline Australian tour for 2022

The band are also locked in as co-headliners of Australian festival Splendour In The Grass

Gorillaz

Gorillaz have announced a handful of Australian shows for next year, marking their first gigs in the country in more than a decade.

The virtual band’s two headline shows sit alongside their previously announced slot at the festival Splendour In The Grass, taking place in Byron Bay, New South Wales in July 2022. Tyler, The Creator and The Strokes have also been confirmed as co-headliners.

Tickets for the headline shows go on sale Wednesday October 6 from 9am local time via Secret Sounds .

The Australian tour follows the release of their latest album, ‘Song Machine: Season One – Strange Timez’ , which includes collaborations with Elton John , Robert Smith , St. Vincent, Peter Hook , Beck and more artists.

NME gave ‘Song Machine: Season One’ a four-star review upon its release in October last year, writing that “the virtual band continue to eschew tradition and expectation with a guest-heavy romp where punk sits effortlessly beside glitzy ballads”.

The band followed it up with a three-track EP last month, ‘Meanwhile’ , which celebrates Notting Hill Carnival. Gorillaz co-creator Damon Albarn had previously discussed working on “carnival-themed” music.

“We’re really going back to the spirit of the first record [ their self-titled 2001 album ],” he told NME in June .

“It’s really exciting and we’ve been really enjoying it. It’s a nice kind of counter-balance to ‘The Nearer The Fountain…’ , really. I’ve definitely needed a dose of something else after I finished that record. Steel pan drums and Casio MT-40s were always going to be a good cure.”

Gorillaz announce Splendour In The Grass sideshows for 2022

A cartoon of a blue-haired man holding a deer, a zombie priest, a woman in a pink dress with a cigarette holder, a man smoking

  • X (formerly Twitter)

The virtual band will play two big arena shows in July

Gorillaz , the world's most successful virtual band, have today confirmed they will play two sideshows when here as a headliner at the Splendour In The Grass festival mid-next year.

The legendary band, created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and revered illustrator Jamie Hewlett, ventured back into live performance this August with a big concert at London's O2 Arena to recognise frontline health workers who've worked so tirelessly through the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was followed by a few arena shows and a festival date in the UK, where the band worked through career spanning setlists that weighed heavily on classic second album Demon Days .

Australian fans won't need to wait long to experience the magic of a Gorillaz show, as the group return for their first visit in 12 years mid-next year.

It is still unknown if the band will bring guests along to share in the fun this time around. Their 2010 tour saw the late, great Bobby Womack and hip hop legends De La Soul as part of the show, while recent UK dates have featured appearances from slowthai and EARTHGANG.

Last year's Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez album featured guests like Elton John, Robert Smith, Beck and St. Vincent, but we won't hold our breath expecting any of them to join the touring troupe…

Damon Albarn has been incredibly productive since the pandemic hit. There is new Gorillaz material on the way, following the release of their seventh album late last year, and Albarn has recently confirmed he'll release another solo album before 2021 is through.

Speaking with Double J's Tim Shiel last year, Albarn said he works hard because he loves it.

"I'm so f*****g grateful to be able to do what I do. I  should  work really hard at it, because otherwise, what's the point?"

Catch Gorillaz at the following shows on their Australian tour:

Friday 22 July – Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bay Sunday 24 July – John Cain Arena, Melbourne Tuesday 26 July – Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney

Tickets for the Sydney and Melbourne shows will be on sale from 9am Wednesday 6 October.

Gorillaz – The biggest music event storming Adelaide this year!

Last chance to catch the groundbreaking entourage on their australian tour in one of the biggest music events to hit adelaide in 2022., presented by: secret sounds & illuminate adelaide.

Way back when at the turn of the millennium, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett smashed art, music and technology together to create the world’s greatest virtual band.  Now – having turned this playful experiment into an enduring and innovative global phenomenon – 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel are set to storm Adelaide Entertainment Centre for a special extra show added just for Illuminate Adelaide.

Returning to the SA stage for the first time in over a decade, the BRIT and Grammy Award-winning supergroup will bring their genre-hopping blend of hip hop, rock and dance to life with a 20-piece ensemble led by Albarn and an all-star army of collaborators. Performing tracks across their seven album catalogue from Clint Eastwood and Demon Days to 2020’s Strange Timez, the band might be virtual – but the feeling is so good.

Gorillaz lead illuminate adelaide’s huge 2022 winter festival lineup.

gorillaz tour australia 2022

Taking place from 1 – 31 July, Illuminate Adelaide will see the city come alive with lights, live music, visual art, discussion, installation and much more for its second ever event.

A celebration of innovation, music, art, light and technology, Adelaide’s winter music and arts festival, Illuminate Adelaide , has announced its return in 2022, lifting the lid on its impressive new lineup.

Following last year’s wildly successful inaugural edition, the second iteration of Illuminate Adelaide will now take place over the entire month of July, transforming laneways, venues and spaces across the city with a program of free and ticketed discussions, installations, dance, live music, immersive experiences and much more.

What you need to know

  • Illuminate Adelaide is happening from 1 – 31 Jul
  • The music and arts programs have been revealed
  • The festival will take over various spaces across the city

Keep up with all the festival news, reviews and interviews  here .

Promising to entice locals, interstate and international visitors to the city as it brings the streets of Adelaide to a bright and intriguing light this winter, the festival is already looking the goods with its 2022 program, featuring Istanbul-based visionaries Ouchhh Studio’s major exhibition Wisdom of AI Light – an AI-driven multisensory experience that’s putting the art in artificial intelligence; Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s ground-breaking band Gorillaz;  the return of celebrated Montreal studio Moment Factory’s Light Cycles at the Botanic Gardens; the free city-wide centrepiece City Lights bringing over 40 large-scale installations, projections and immersive works to the city ; plus a wider music program that is a glorious journey through music in all its forms and variations.

Curated by co-founders and creative directors Rachael Azzopardi and Lee Cumberlidge, the festival, will see local, national and international creatives and technologists alike come together for a vibrant winter festival, with last year’s edition attracting over 500,000 attendances and bringing more than $40 million to the South Australian economy – despite wild weather and a COVID lockdown impacting the inaugural year.

“After an overwhelming response to our inaugural program in 2021 we are delighted to announce for 2022 an expanded program of experiences, installations, and performances showcasing the very best examples of the convergence of art and technology our city and the world has to offer right now,” the founders say.

“We are looking forward to welcoming hundreds of thousands of South Australians and visitors to our state into our city to participate in a massive program of free and ticketed events across the month of July.”

Further highlights of the 2022 event will be the return of Light Creatures which will take audiences behind the gates of Adelaide Zoo after dark; the Australian premiere of Joanna Dudley’s operatic video installation We Will Slam You With Our Wings which steals from some of history’s most notoriously sexist speeches and recasts them into a feminist war cry echoing through the ages; Futures , a 50-metre walkway of light, sound and mirrors by Lucid Creates; and the Squidsoup collective’s  Submergence , comprising thousands of suspended lights visitors can wander among. Spanish 3D-projection artist Filip Roca will also follow up his 2021 festival hit by lighting up Adelaide Festival Centre’s exterior; and a CBD’s permanent nine-storey screen with The Rundle Lantern.

Ouchhh Studio is Illuminate Adelaide’s 2022 Luminary Artist In Residence, and in addition to the aforementioned Wisdom of AI Light , the Studio will also present Ocean Data at Light Adelaide as part of the City Lights program, and Ouchhh Studio directors Ferdi Alici and Eylul Alici can be heard in conversation at an artist keynote address.

On the music front, alongside the world’s greatest virtual band Gorillaz who will be performing their first Aussie shows in over a decade, the festival will shine with the genre-defying music and visual series KLASSIK underground where globetrotting Australian violist Tahlia Petrosian will direct the collaboration between a star-studded ensemble of musicians and Australia’s foremost visual artists across three nights including CAPITAL WASTE (Liam Somerville), Robin Fox and Margie Medlin.

Gorillaz Announce Live Austrailian Tour For 2022

gorillaz tour australia 2022

Gorillaz have announced a set of Austrailian shows for 2022. These will be their first gigs down under in more than 10 years.

Tickets for the shows will also go on sale on Wednesday October 6 at 9am local time via Secret Sounds.

Gorillaz had already confirmed that they will be performing live at the festival Splendour in the Grass at Byron Bay, New South Wales. These will take place in July 2022.

This announcement of their upcoming tour comes following the released of their latest album “Song Machine: Season One Strange Timez”.

“Meanwhile”

Last month, Gorillaz also released the EP “Meanwhile”, celebrating the Notting Hill Carnival. Speaking on this EP, Gorillaz co-creator Damon Albarn had this to say.

Albarn told NME, “We’re really going back to the spirit of the first record (their self-titled 2001 album)”.

He also added, “It’s really exciting and we’ve been really enjoying it. It’s a nice kind of counter-balance to ‘The Nearer The Fountain…’, really. I’ve definitely needed a dose of something else after I finished that record. Steel pan drums and Casio MT-40s were always going to be a good cure”.

Gorillaz Tour Dates

JULY Sunday 24 – Melbourne, John Cain Arena Tuesday 26 – Sydney, Qudos Bank Arena

Back in March, Gorillaz also re-released their debut self-titled album to mark 20 years since its original release.  They also hinted at releasing NFT collectables.

Reflecting on the last 20 years, Gorillaz bassist Murdoc Nicals had this to say.

“I’m exhausted”, he said. “20 years is a long time to be top of your game and let’s be clear here, it’s a one man gig keeping this show on the road”.

A lot of names get bandied about, a lot of pretenders to the throne, one or two in particular… But there is only one Murdoc Niccals. As an ex of mine once said, it’s hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world”.

Melbourne ended up being treated to the first Gorillaz show in 12 years after the headline performance at Splendour In The Grass on Friday was cancelled due to torrential rains.

As Premier, Cain approved the building of the National Tennis Center (now called Rod Laver Arena) and the development of Melbourne Park (where John Cain Arena now stands). The development was crucial to keeping the Australian Open in Melbourne, where 40 years later it still remains.

Hisense Arena was renamed John Cain Arena in December 2020.

Gorillaz is a British pop band created in 1998 in London, England, as the creative brainchild of musician Damon Albarn and graphic artist Jamie Hewlett. The band consists entirely of fictional members, with Albarn and various guests creating the band’s music.

The fictional band members are Murdoc Niccals, 2-D, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. They are represented in music videos and concerts in cartoons illustrated by Hewlett.

Gorillaz is a pop band with a distinctive sound. Its musical style combines synth-pop, alternative rock, hip-hop, electronic, trip-hop, and dark pop. Albarn credits various and diverse artists as significant influences. Some of the better-known influences include Massive Attack, Public Image Ltd, Tom Tom Club, Fun Boy Three, and Unkle. Influences for the animated band members include Glitch Techs, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Gorillaz is known for collaborating with many prominent artists such as Elton John, Georgia, Popcaan, and Mavis Staples. This one-of-a-kind group has influenced a bevy of artists since it burst onto the music scene, including 5 Seconds of Summer, AWOLNATION, Paramore, Grimes, and Kesha.

Gorillaz has grossed over 27 million records worldwide and won a Grammy as well as multiple MTV Video Music Awards. The group has also been nominated for 11 Brit Awards and won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards. Gorillaz also holds the distinction of being the Most Successful Virtual Band in the Guinness World Records.

From 1998 to 2000, Albarn worked on the band’s self-titled first album, Gorillaz, which dropped in 2001. The first song release was “Tomorrow Comes Today,” and the music video for the song marked the world’s introduction to the virtual band members. Overall, the album was a smash, both commercially and critically.

The aforementioned second album, Demon Days, followed in 2005. The album marked a shift in the band’s sound into the darker approach to pop that made it famous. Demon Days was its most successful studio effort to date. It went double platinum in the U.S. and contained the ubiquitous and widely popular single “Feel Good Inc.”

In 2006, the band penned an “autobiographical” book titled Rise of the Ogre that expanded on the universe and backstories of the fictional band members.

Gorillaz’s third album, Plastic Beach, hit the market in 2010. The environmentally themed album featured a new synth-pop sound and a lineup of featured guest artists.

The Fall, the band’s fourth album, also released in 2010. The album was largely recorded while Alban was traveling during the band’s Escape to Plastic Beach Tour.

The band’s fifth studio effort, Humanz, dropped in April 2017 after a lengthy hiatus. The album debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 and received positive reviews from fans and critics.

The sixth album, The Now Now, was released in 2018 and presented a more stripped-down version of the band’s signature sound, concentrating on Albarn’s original music instead of guest artists.

Gorillaz’ launched a new web series project titled Song Machine. The series of episodes featured music videos of the band with musical singles. After the series concluded, the band compiled each song to create its seventh studio album, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, in 2020.

Throughout 2022, Gorillaz was on tour in South America, Europe, Australia, and North America. Throughout the Gorillaz tour, the band released new music promoting its upcoming eighth album, Cracker Island, scheduled for release in 2023.

Live reviews

By far the best concert I’ve ever been to. The openers (Vince Staples and Danny Brown) were just as fantastic as Gorillaz themselves. (though they are apart of Gorillaz) But when Gorillaz got onstage, it absolutely blew my mind. Most of the instrumentation for their live shows is just that, LIVE. It’s an extremely impressive feat, and you’ll appreciate parts of their music you’ve never thought of. Best example of this is their back up singers, who, in my humble belief, went above and beyond. In the final few songs, you could have convinced me I was in the middle of a gospel song at church. Not to mention ALL their features, who have amazing singing talent in their own right.

Now, I must confess, I was extremely worried about this concert. I thought it would be Humanz, through and through, with some throwbacks - which had me worried as 1. Humanz is maybe their least liked album as of now 2. I also had some personal gripes with it. Wrong. 100%. They certainly didn’t, but it felt like they played their whole discography. I legitimately was RELIEVED when they played songs from Humanz. They even played some of the stuff from their ‘Super Deluxe’, spesifically Garage Palace feat. Little Sims - which no one in there had ever heard before - that was the biggest highlight for me. She just jumped onstage and said 1000 words in 10 seconds and danced around like it was nothing. Absolutely insane. They closed off, like u mentioned earlier, with Demon Days and the hits from Demon Days. Had De La Soul come onstage a SECOND time for the biggest hit. This was by far the best concert I’ve ever been to.

I love the Gorillaz. They are pretty much the most exciting and original band out there right now. Even in their live concerts, they stick with their cartoon characters. Imagine a massive screen towering over the stage, with huge silhouettes of the characters (2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel), as the music starts and the lights come up, they suddenly come to life – and you can just about see the actual band underneath on stage.

The whole show has a cartoon animation version, where the "band" plays along with the music as if they're playing it. Meanwhile, Damon Albarn (from Blur) is the one who's really singing the songs. You'll almost certainly recognize their song "Clint Eastwood" – in fact, when I saw them at Glastonbury festival in 2010, Albarn hardly sang – the crowd knew all the words! "I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad, I got sunshine in a bag, I'm useless but not for long the future is comin' on..."

Also, I have no idea what that instrument he uses is- the flute with a keyboard on it- but it has such a unique sound that I just can't get over! Then all of a sudden SNOOP DOG is on stage, completely out of nowhere! He's rapping along with the song, we're going wild and screaming and singing along, everyone is excited. Albarn really pulled his weight next to Snoop, and more. And the images on the screen flashing by just completed the image, like watching the perfect music video with all the benefits of live music.

I almost missed their performance that year, and I am SO glad I didn't! I hope they keep touring, I'd go see their shows every week if I could. I can't wait until next time!

This was my first time seeing the Gorillaz ever (although I've been a fan since 2001 life always happened and couldn't see them before) but concert wise, it was the best show I've ever seen. I'm not too sure I'll ever go to Merriweather again. Because all horrible puns intended when the weather ain't merry, it isn't a place you wanna be. Parking and traffic are also a nightmare. Uber if you ever go to Merriweather. During the VIP set we were kicked out of the pavillan which I'm assuming because it was storming. And we were left to our own devices seeking shelter from the rain. (I brought an umbrella so I was some what dry. Seeing the Gorillaz was worth the lighting risk lmao). The show itself was amazing. The Gorillaz really know how to perform a live set. Dare I say better than other "more popular" bands I've seen. Damon has a tonne of energy as do the rest of the performers. There was such a connection between the fans even if there was a vast range of various demographics. We were all Humanz and that's the whole point of the Gorillaz. I LOVED it. Lost my voice screaming the lyrics back. I would definitely recommend that anyone who likes the Gorillaz see them when they can. It's worth every penny, getting rained on, sweltering in the sun, all of it.

In general the show was awesome! The atmosphere was incredible and I feel that the band had really put everything they've got into the show.

The only thing that really bothered me was the security. Since the arena was devided into three sections: the fan pit, the parter and the sitting area (where I was) and the ticket prices were different for each of them it was understandable that they didn't allow the fans to cross between them but the thing that was absolutely insane was the fact that they didn't let us (people in the sitting area) dance!? Like seriously it's a concert! They took it as far as beating up a man and escorted him out just for DANCING ON A FREAKING CONCERT!? LIKE WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!?

Even with jerks for security like that I really enjoyed the show and in general I'm more than happy that I was a small part of it!

Gorillaz was the first time in austria but it felt like they know the austrian stage for years.

It was such a great concert, Damon Albarn gave all his energy for the crowd, the instrumentalists, the backround singers, everyone was just great.

The songs sound live in concert much better than on CD, vinyl or mp3 and it is hard to believe that Damons voice really sounds like this. I was standing in the wavebraker and the atmosphere was just perfect, espicially when songs like “Tomorrow comes today“ or “Kids with guns“ are played.

The show was also perfect, sometimes they showed the videos from youtube, sometimes completley new videos which i have not seen before.

To conclude, it was a really great concert and a mustsee for every gorillaz fan because how often can you see them live ;)

The bassist is such a super chill beyond cool guy. Straight up champs him and the guitarist. Damon was legendary, as expected. Personal shoutout to the lady that climbed up to the catwalk to work the lights over the stage, some thought she couldn't make it, but we believed.

The show was absolutely STELLAR!! Great crowd and even greater stage presence. The background vocalists really did an amazing job, especially memorable when one stepped out to perform on Kids With Guns. The crowd went wild, but that was to be expected. Everyone was roaring in excitement when the various guests came to do their parts in Dirty Harry, Hollywood, etc. Nothing compared to Feel Good Inc, though, I was scared the roof would cave in from the in unison laughter.

Smasung hall is a great spacious venue with the most amazing sound quality, my husband and I were very impressed and are looking forward to coming back.

The Gorillaz put on a great show, with the videos, the lights and the synced singing, it's really worth it.

We were a little disappointed about the type of songs, more british rock, less hip hop as the original Gorillaz were, but I guess that's the new album.

Damon Albarn however is a terrible front man, or he seemed to be at least in Zurich. Never interacted with the public, hardly talked or tried to get the us involved or dancing nor singing.

Opening act Little Simz was amazing!

An amazing concert and wish we could go again amazing atmosphere and was surprised to see some artists we weren't expecting like Liam Gallagher wish the set could of been longer as both me and my fiancé have been waiting for over 10 years to see Gorillaz and would love to hear more songs live next time Gorillaz are live we will definitely be going. We also managed to park up in the hotel which was a 15 minute walk from the stadium and drove away with no issues. Will definitely be attending another Gorillaz concert and with hopefully more money next time as there were things we wanted but couldn't afford lol

Gorillaz Humanz World Tour was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated shows by Chilean fans. It was an unparalleled performance, with a wonderful staging, in which each song described the story of the Gorillaz characters including songs like "19-2000" "Clint Eastwood" "Feel Good Inc" going through "Saturnz Barz", until a new single called "Hollywood". The way in which the group plays with the different rhythms and visuals creates a unique atmosphere, full of energy, which made vibrate from the youngest to the most adult of the fans of this band.

Without a doubt, a show that you can not miss.

This was the first concert that I have ever gone to and I'm not gonna lie, this was an amazing experience. The opening started off with 'The Internet' for about an hour, but then it went over to the band everyone was there for, 'Gorillaz. They played some of the songs everyone liked and all the fans joined in on helping them add more emotions to the song. Also, the live portion of the concert was what made it so good because it was rawer than the online songs which made it better because you get to hear what the artists put into each song for each song.
