The city from the water

Amsterdam boasts over 100 kilometres of canals and more than 1500 bridges. During the Golden Age, many of the canals were built, including the popular Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. Amsterdam’s canals are unique and are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. An Amsterdam boat tour lends itself perfectly to admiring the symbol of the capital from the water.

Did you know that the canals were, and still are, incredibly important for Amsterdam for several reasons? The canals kept buildings dry, allowed merchants to transport goods through the city more easily, and made it easier to defend the city. Nowadays, the waters are still crowded with, for example, our canal cruise Amsterdam or our private boat tour. It gives you a unique view of the characteristic canal houses. From elegant mansions on the Keizersgracht to converted warehouses on the Brouwersgracht. Our experienced and local boatmen will tell you the best facts about them.

Romantic Amsterdam

The many green trees and romantic bridges give a soft character to the city centre. The Skinny Bridge is beautifully lit in the evening, decorated with hanging flower boxes and parked bicycles, and has been labelled as Amsterdam’s most romantic spot. It is definitely worth taking a photo as you sail past it during our canal cruise Amsterdam. Another photo-worthy bridge is the one on the corner of the Reguliersgracht and Herengracht. That’s not because the bridge itself is so beautiful, but because it gives you a great view over 15 bridges and many canal houses that are stated tight against the water. And if you’re already busy with taking pictures, then grab your opportunity to take a beautiful picture of the Golden Bend where Amsterdam’s most beautiful canal houses are stated.

A unique canal cruise in Amsterdam

At Flagship Amsterdam, we offer you a unique experience on Amsterdam’s canals. Our local skippers and friendly hosts are waiting for you on our public canal cruises. With the luxury saloon boat canal cruise with cheese and wine, you sail past many sights in the city centre and learn about the history and secrets of Amsterdam! The package with wine and cheese is highly recommended, according to many travellers on Tripadvisor: ”Very good wine and a cheese board were the icing on the cake”. On our public canal cruises, you will be on board with a small group of people, which allows you to interact with our skipper and host. They will tell you more about the secrets, facts, and history of Amsterdam in an accessible way, filled with humour. With the Amsterdam evening canal cruise, you will discover romantic Amsterdam and enjoy the illuminated streets and bridges on a 100% electric boat.

With a package of Flagship Amsterdam, you will create a unique experience on Amsterdam’s canals. Do you fancy a drink with friends, family, or colleagues on a sunny afternoon, or opt for a full meal with burgers or pizza? Take a look at our foodbook and look at the endless possibilities we offer.

Top 5 Amsterdam Canals

In Dutch a canal is a “gracht” and canals are “grachten”. There are a couple of canals in Amsterdam that form the central canal right, also known as “grachtengordel” in Dutch.

QUICK JUMP TO:

The beauties came to life during the beginning of the 17th-century, after the population in Amsterdam grew beyond its medieval walls and city planners put together an ambitious idea for expansion. Far from being picturesque or decorative, the canals in Amsterdam were necessary to drain & reclaim the wet land.

In 2010, Unesco listed the canals in Amsterdam (or waterways) as a World Heritage site. The canals in Amsterdam outnumber those in Venice.

Number Of Canals in Amsterdam

There are currently 165 canals in Holland’s capital. Amsterdam also has 3 times as many bridges – more than any other place in the world.

This Dutch city has more bicycles than the 863.200 inhabitants and every year 12.000 bicycles are pulled out of the canals in Amsterdam.

What Canals Are There?

The core canals in Amsterdam are semicircular Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht . A simple way to remember the names of these canals is that, aside from the Singel canal, all others are in alphabetical order as you move outward.

5 Best Canals in Amsterdam

The Singel is a canal in Amsterdam that starts from the IJ-river and ends at Munt Square or Muntplein in Dutch, where it flows into the Binnen Amstel. The Singel was dug in 1428 and extended in 1450. It was initially a moat that defended the western limits of Amsterdam. Amazing, historical buildings are located on this canal – there’s even one that dates back to the year 1600: The House “De Dolphijn”. This used to be the house of Frans Banninck Cocq – who Rembrandt painted in his Night Watch.

Since 1968, the Singel canal also has an official Cat boat – a houseboat containing dozens of cats. The Catboat is the only floating animal sanctuary in the world. A refuge for stray and abandoned cats which, thanks to its special location on a houseboat in Amsterdam’s charming canal belt, has also become a world-famous attraction.

2 | Herengracht

This was where the richest residents of the city moved once the canals in Amsterdam were completed. Before that, they lived on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal – in “ De Wallen “, beter known as the Red Light District. They named the waterway after the Heeren XVII (17 Gentlemen) of the Dutch East India Company and built their beautiful mansions alongside it.

3 | Keizersgracht

The Keizersgracht , the second of the three main canals in Amsterdam that together form the canals, is located between the Herengracht and the Prinsengracht.

Almost as stylish, the Keizersgracht was a bow to Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and with 28 meters in width the Keizersgracht is the widest canal in town. A special detail is that the Keizersgracht was dug one year later than the Prinsengracht (which was dug in 1614), while Keizersgracht is the second canal of the three main canals.

Also this canal is surround by beautiful, old buildings from the 19th, 18th and even the 17th-century. The oldest building on the Keizersgracht is the House with the Heads , which was built in 1622 and named after the 6 ornaments shaped as heads, which can all be found on the facade.

4 | Prinsengracht

This canal in Amsterdam was named after Willem the Silent, Prince of Orange and the 1st Dutch royal. The Prinsengracht (or Princes canal in English) was created as a somewhat cheaper canal with smaller residences and warehouses. It was one of the canals in Amsterdam that acted as a barrier against the crusty working-class quarter beyond it, also known as the Jordaan.

Nowadays, the Prinsengracht is the liveliest of the canals in Amsterdam, with cafes, shops and many houseboats. Yearly, during the first weekend of August one of Amsterdam’s biggest events takes place on this canal: The Amsterdam Pride (formally known as the Gay Pride).

5 | Brouwersgracht

The Brouwersgracht is a radial canal in Amsterdam which cuts across the others. This canal takes its name from the many breweries that used to produce along the bounding waters. People often find the Brouwersgracht one of the most beautiful canals in Amsterdam.

How Many Canals Does Amsterdam Have?

165 canals. That’s how many Amsterdam has. And that number doesn’t even include all the waterways in the city, just the canals. The 165 canals were built in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age to transport goods and people around the city. Today, they’re used for recreation and tourism. Many people enjoy taking a canal cruise or renting a boat to explore the city from the water. The canals also serve as a major transportation artery for locals getting around town. With so many canals, it’s no wonder Amsterdam is often called the Venice of the North.

Exploring Holland’s capital by boat is one of the best things you could do while being in the wonderful city. There are many canal companies in town, but we know which one to take.

Canal cruise review

We tried in February 2024 a one-hour Lovers canal cruise ourselves. We departed from Prins Hendrikkade 25 which is next to Central Station. The staff aboard was friendly and helpful. We received a free audio tour that was available in 19 languages . Although we know a lot about Amsterdam ourselves we still heard many new fun facts. In the map above you can see some of the picture locations we passed by. This is just a handful of some of the great picture locations . You can keep your camera on the table in the boat because you will have a new great picture moment almost every minute. The temperature inside of the boat is pleasant since there are electrical heaters near your seats. The chairs are not too big, and you will sit at the table with 3 chairs on each side. If your body weight is above average we recommend you to take this boat in low hours so you probably have more space. Or to consider a boat that’s a bit more spacious with the seatings.

Good to know that there is a toilet on board, and it would be highly appreciated if you tip the captain and the crew some change. Overall we liked the trip, and the hour flew by.

Sail a small boat yourself

Do you want to be completely free and decide yourself which canals to cruise, have a picnic, drink or stay on the canals for hours? Then there’s the option to hire a small electric boat and sail it yourself. This might very well be the coolest way to explore the waterways of Amsterdam! Especially when you’re with a group of people renting a boat in Amsterdam is a fun and cheap alternative for canal cruises with a classical canal boat. There are multiple companies that rent out small electric boats that you can sail yourself. They are easy to sail and the electric propulsion provides a smooth, comfortable cruise over the Amsterdam canals. So put your captain hat on and start your own adventure. This is it. THIS is what you came all the way to Amsterdam to see. Not the Anne Frank house. Not the Rijksmuseum. Not the Red Light District. Not the Vondelpark, not the Royal Palace. You came to see the city's canals, and they're just as fantastic as you've always thought! I probably took 200 photos of Amsterdam's canals in only a few days. They're so pretty and peaceful, and it's fun just to meander alongside the locals on bicycles while sticking with a water view. If you want to spend the perfect day in the city, just walk the canals until you get tired. Amsterdam's canals are pretty in a different way than Venice, Italy or Bruges, Belgium. They have a distinct personality that's all their own. And personality goes a long way.

Amsterdam's beautiful canals. My photos don't do them justice.

Beautiful!! What's an Amsterdam visit without canals?! So many beautiful canals in such little area. One can find flower shops, meat, fast food and more on canals! My favorite is this one main one since it runs through an entire town. During winter months, you can get on festive canal cruises and take in the light shows without being completely in the bone chilling cold. They are quite stunning actually! And if you're here for the busiest time of the year aka NYE, definitely get your spot on the canal for fireworks early!! These canals look stunning during the day time, night time it gets even better. Some by the red light area are quite messy but walk around it and you'll be fine!

Prettiness!

Amsterdam canals... what should I say.. They a charming, magic, inspirational, beautiful and all awesome adjectives could be acceptable to them I think. If you like water and water cruises you will love these canals. Amsterdam couldn't be imaging without canals and that's totally true. They inspired such masters as Rembrandt and Van Gogh for their works. And seems canals keep secrets of Amsterdam for now. Just walk through "Amsterdam grachten" and imagine this city some centuries ago..

The best way to see amsterdam is by cruising by boat on the canal. A nice route: - prinsengracht - brouwersgracht - herengracht - rokin - redlight district - nemo ... There are nice teraces next to the water: - hannekes boom ( near nemo) - cafe het smalle ( prinsengracht, near westerkerk) - hesp (amstel) And there are several other great places

grachten boat tour

The canals in Amsterdam are many things. To start off they're classically picturesque. They're peaceful and beautiful lined trees as well as with boats, houseboats and monument houses. They exude history. At night some of the bridges are lined with lights making the scenery even more picturesque. They're also alive and full of activity from King's day to the Gay Pride parade to the Grachten Festival to the everyday regular canal cruises. During festivals there is a seemingly never ending parade of boats cruising in either direction until all hours of the day and night. You never had any idea Amsterdam had so many boats. During warmer days and seasons there are many boats, large, not so large and tiny cruising in either direction the waters of the canals. There are the pedal powered boats with one to four people pedaling furiously trying to get out of the way of the cruise ship bearing down on them. There are small steamships with smoke stacks. There are what appear to be open fishing boats. There are large ocean going boats and smaller sailboat type boats with no masts. There are small two person boats powered by an outboard motor with a couple of people out for a cruise. The people in the many boats are either sightseeing or just spending leisure time enjoying the scenery and the ride. It's actually quite pleasureable to cruise the canals in a boat and have wine, beer and snacks to munch on. It's all so very relaxed. Occasionally, one or more of the boats gliding by is full of party revelers with a group celebrating ether a wedding or some such. Sometimes they're dressed in costume or wearing party hats. Sometimes they're formally dressed. Their music is blaring for all to hear or they're singing together or solo. All the while having a good time. In some ways I suppose the canals are also a thoroughfare. There's a practical side to them. It's far easier to push, pull or drag a barge full of stuff up or down a canal to a location than it is to haul a wagon load or truck load full of things down a road. Regardless, the canals seem to have more people in boats just cruising and having a good time than people purposefully going somewhere or occupied with some work related task. It seems as though a culture evolved around the canals. A cruise on one of the cruise ships on the canal is a great way to see and experience Amsterdam. There are lots of photo ops and tons of tourists taking advantage of them. If you've ever the opportunity to cruise the canals aboard a boat large, medium or small, take it. It'll be fun.

I didn't know you could review the canals... but why not! The canals are what makes Amsterdam so charming, picturesque, cozy, and amazing. I love walking along the canals and just looking into the distance. All you see is beautiful preserved houses on both sides, some boutique stores and cafes, and a lot of bikes parked on the bridges. You can also just stand there and watch all the boats go by... or be in a boat yourself, which is even more beautiful to experience. I love the canals!

Amsterdam Canal Tour | Rent a Grachten Boat

A Gay Couple Rental Canal Boat Tour Amsterdam with Boats4rent – A Gay City Weekend Amsterdam without a boat tour around the canals (so-called Grachten) of Amsterdam ? No way! Not only because it is very common in the Netherlands to have an own boat (or know someone who does). As soon as the sun comes out, everyone with a boat is on the canals, cruising around the canals, ordering pizza at the “boat drive-in” and is just enjoying the beauty of the gay-friendly Dutch capital, unique nature, and the Amstel River. Actually, for us, it is simply one of the best ways to explore and enjoy the biggest city of the Netherlands . Enjoy our review, tips, and information and experience the Canals of Amsterdam through a gay couple of men ‘s eyes.

Cruising around the Canals of Amsterdams

But how to organize a canal tour in Amsterdam ? Do it like the Dutch people and drive together with friends. We like to take the aluminum electric boats from boats4rent.nl. Starting from Amsterdam Westerpark, a map guides us through the narrow waterways, passing by beautiful Grachten houses and all the most important sights of Amsterdam. The goal of a 3-hour tour is the Amstel River with a stunning view of the Amstel Hotel, the Opera House of Amsterdam, and the busy traffic of Amsterdam’s biggest waterway.

Become an Amsterdam Canal Boat Captain

Since we don’t have an own a boat in Amsterdam, we like to rent one of the small, electronic boats from boats4rent at Westerpark Amsterdam. The ideal solution for travelers as well. Why? These boats are easy to navigate, they cannot drive speed up too fast, and they are suitable for at least 6 people. Bring some snacks, cold drinks, and a blanket for the late evening wind and sit down on your rental boat for at least 3 hours (or longer, if you prefer another time package) enjoying the stunning over the historic architecture of Amsterdam’s Grachten houses from a boat’s perspective. Simply a must-do for a trip to Amsterdam.

Things you need to know:

Things you need to know about driving a boat on the canals of Amsterdam: Be aware of the long, hard-to-navigate canal cruise boats! Smaller boats have to give way and are asked to drive on the right side close to the canal sides. Do you need a drivers license for a rental boat in Amsterdam? No, you don’t need a boat license for a boat shorter than 15 Meters or slower than 20 kilometers per hour. You are even allowed to stop the boat and go to a toilet or store as long as someone stays on the rental boat of boats4rent. Have a look at the time, since you have to go all the way back to Westerpark. The map of the waterways of Amsterdam shows you where you are allowed to drive and the distances with full speed back to the dock. And now, do it like the Dutch people do, or how we like to do it for a couple of hours together with our best friends, countless selfie options, and the real Dutch Amsterdam feeling.

Florida airboat flips sending 9 passengers into gator-infested waters, operator arrested

grachten boat tour

An airboat tour in the Florida Everglades capsized sending passengers overboard on Friday, officials say. This happened when the airboat's driver took a sharp turn to try to see an alligator in the water, according to multiple reports.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said three units responded to a waterway near Coopertown The Original Airboat Tour in the Everglades Friday afternoon. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, nine people and the operator all fell into the water when the boat took a quick turn.

By time MDFR arrived, everyone had climbed out of the water, and only one patient was treated for injuries on the scene.

Boat passengers say they were afraid of alligators in water, reports state

Passengers told Local 10 the boat operator was trying to get a closer look at a nearby alligator when the airboat flipped.

“My first thought was panic, I was afraid for my wife and family members, and then I thought about the alligator,” passenger Jose Maldonado told Local 10.

NBC Miami said the boat was partially submerged in the water and some passengers were standing on top waiting for help.

Alligator mating season runs from early April until the end of June, when the Sunshine State sees more activity and they become more aggressive.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.

Danube river cruise ship crashed after it was 'suddenly no longer able to maneuver,' 17 passengers injured

  • A cruise ship crashed into a concrete wall along the Danube river in Austria on Friday.
  • A police statement said the ship "was suddenly no longer able to maneuver."
  • Eleven people were treated at the hospital and another six suffered less serious injuries.

Insider Today

A Bulgarian cruise ship carrying over 140 passengers crashed into a concrete wall along the Danube river in Austria.

The incident occurred late on Friday in the northern Austrian town of Aschach an der Donau, local police said Saturday.

Eleven people were injured and taken to hospital as a result of the crash. Six others suffered less serious injuries that did not require hospital treatment.

Related stories

The ship had set off from Passau, a German city on the Austrian border. A police statement said that as the ship was leaving a lock chamber further down the river, "the ship was suddenly no longer able to maneuver," and its right bow and left aft crashed into the lock walls.

The second-in-command of the ship, who had been at the helm during the crash, "pressed the emergency switch, whereupon the electronics started up again." He was then able to steer the ship out of the lock.

The ship was later docked at the quay wall and emergency services were notified. The ship was able to continue its journey toward Linz, Austria.

Earlier this week, a container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, collapsing a section of the 1.6-mile-long structure. The bodies of two construction workers were found after the collision, and four more workers are missing and presumed dead.

Citing the container ship's recovered data recorder, officials said the power went out on the Dali for just one minute and three seconds as it approached the bridge, Sky News reported, but that was enough for the collision to become unavoidable.

In 2019, a cruise boat hit and sank a smaller boat near Budapest, Hungary, killing 25 South Korean tourists and two crew members. The captain was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the accident.

The Danube is the second-largest river in Europe, flowing from the Black Forest in Germany south into the Black Sea near Romania and Ukraine.

Correction: April 1, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated the year of the Danube ship crash in Hungary. It was in 2019, not 2023.

Norwegian Cruise captain refused to let eight passengers who were late reboard ship

Passengers, who have since rejoined vessel, missed scheduled departure time from São Tomé and scrambled to reunite with ship

Eight cruise passengers had to scramble to reunite with their cruise ship after being left behind in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The passengers, including a pregnant woman and a paraplegic traveller, missed their scheduled departure time from the island of São Tomé in the Gulf of Guinea, about 250km off the coast of Gabon, after disembarking the Norwegian Dawn to take a local tour.

Another passenger in her 80s was reportedly late to the ship because she was receiving emergency medical treatment on the island.

The vessel, operated by Norwegian Cruise Lines, arrived in São Tome on Wednesday morning having departed Cape Town for the three-week cruise to Barcelona on 20 March.

The group’s private day excursions on the island ran overtime and, despite the efforts of the local coast guard, which motored the group to the ship before it set sail that afternoon, the captain would not allow the late guests to board.

Jill and Jay Campbell, from Garden City in South Carolina, described attempting to board the vessel after arriving late.

“We have never had an experience like this before,” Jill Campbell told ABC4 News .

“The harbour master tried to call the ship, the captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number. They said, ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails,’” Jay Campbell added.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us, and then go on the way.”

The travellers’ passports were returned to them via port authorities. The group, which reportedly includes two Australians, had to leave their medication, bank cards and other belongings on board. The Campbells said they were the only members of the group with a Visa card and had paid more than $5,000 in their attempts to reach the ship.

They aimed to reboard the Norwegian Dawn in the Gambia the following Sunday but low tides prevented the ship from making the scheduled stop. The group reportedly travelled through six countries and eventually met the ship in Dakar, Senegal, the final west African port call of its journey, according to the cruise line.

“What we looked at was some type of van transportation for eight people, the quadriplegic woman included,” Jay Campbell told ABC15 . He described having to take a ferry to get into Senegal, and then a four-hour drive.

Australians Doug and Violeta Sanders were among the stranded passengers.

“It’s been the worst experience of our lives to be abandoned like that in a strange country, can’t speak the language,” Violeta Sanders told Seven’s Sunrise program.

“We have no money, our credit cards aren’t accepted.”

The 21-day cruise is due to end in Barcelona on 10 April.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said it was a “very unfortunate situation” and that it was the passenger’s responsibility to be back on board the ship no later than one hour before the ship’s scheduled departure time.

A Sydney travel lawyer, Anthony Cordato, said passengers needed to heed ships’ tight schedules.

“Terms and conditions would make returning to the ship on time essential,” he said.

“From a consumer’s perspective, it’s harsh but from a ship’s perspective, are you going to hold up the cruise for an hour or two because they were slow to get on board? Are you going to inconvenience 1,000 passengers for the sake of four?”

The cruise company said all eight guests had rejoined the ship.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3pm local time. While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.

“When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol. Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call. Given that these guests were on a private tour and did not return to the ship at the communicated all aboard time, they are responsible for any necessary travel arrangements to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call, per our protocol.

“While the eight guests made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia on April 1, 2024, unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests’ disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority. We contacted these eight guests regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal. As of this morning, all eight guests have rejoined the ship.”

Subscriber only, travel | brightline partners with princess cruises, wraps train with ‘love boat’ theme.

Florida’s high-speed Brightline train has partnered with Princess Cruises for a “Rail & Sail” program that includes one of its trains made over with the iconic imagery of the brand with ties to “The Love Boat.”

Most Princess ships call Port Everglades home in Fort Lauderdale, including the debut later this year of its newest and largest ship, the Sun Princess. The line is expanding with its first ship to be based out of Port Canaveral this fall when Caribbean Princess arrives.

The nearly 113,000-gross-ton vessel began sailing in 2004, christened by Jill Whelan who played Vicki Stubing on “The Love Boat.” Princess ships were featured during the show’s run in the 1970s and 1980s.

Brightline runs from Miami to Orlando with several stops in South Florida, including Fort Lauderdale and a northern terminus at Orlando International Airport. The line has future stops planned that include Cocoa, near Port Canaveral.

The deal between the train and cruise companies aims to offer passengers hassle-free travel to the two port destinations that includes an optional express baggage checking service at $35 per bag that people can use so their luggage is checked at the train station and will make its way to their staterooms.

The deals include complimentary motorcoach travel from the Brightline station to the cruise port terminal to board the ships. The Orlando-to-Port Canaveral service will begin once Caribbean Princess begins sailing in November.

“A Princess cruise is already the best value in travel and this new partnership with Brightline makes it even easier and more enjoyable to sail with us from the top-rated ports in South and Central Florida,” said cruise line president John Padgett in a news release. “Our guests can just sit back, relax, and let us do the rest, including delivering their luggage directly to their stateroom.”

The partnership also offers discounts of up to 15% on packages booked through the Brightline website. For those who book through May 5, an extra credit for up to $150 per person for certain packages is available.

The Princess theme design adorns four cars that include the Princess “seawitch” logo and depictions of popular ports of call. Princess branding will also be on display at Brightline terminals.

“Brightline has been connecting travelers to South Florida ports since we began operations in 2018 and cruisers from the beginning have found our train to be the easiest way to start their vacation,” said Brightline President Patrick Goddard in the release. “Today’s partnership with Princess Cruises and this train wrap with the iconic Love Boat branding is yet another example of the connection between cruisers and Brightline.
