Grand Canyon Skywalk

Grand Canyon Skywalk, also referred to as the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, is located at Grand Canyon West, situated on Hualapai tribal lands, consisting of just less than 1,000,000 acres. It is approximately 120 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada, and about 70 miles north of Kingman, Arizona. Access to the Glass Bridge is also available through the Grand Canyon West Airport. The Skwyalk is a horseshoe shaped steel frame with a glass floor and sides that overhangs 70 feet (21 m) from the Grand Canyon's rim looking through down 4,000 feet to the bottom of the canyon. The Skywalk is most easily accessed through Kingman or Las Vegas as opposed to the more commonly visited South Rim accessed through Williams or Tusayan, AZ. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is both owned and managed by the Hualapai Tribe, therefore specific rules must be followed in order to enjoy this attraction. The tribe itself has about 2,300 members with Peach Springs on Highway 66 being the location of the tribal headquarters. The Hualapai Tribe also operates a hotel, restaurant, and gift shop in Peach Springs. If you want to visit the Grand Canyon Skywalk, staying at a hotel in Las Vegas,NV or Kingman, AZ will put you in striking distance of this attraction.

Book Your Stay in Las Vegas When Visiting the Skywalk

How was the Grand Canyon Skywalk Built?

The Skywalk construction was completed and opened to the public on March 28, 2007, following four years of meticulous engineering efforts. Using a combination of modern techniques and ancient methods, the engineers implemented the rod and plate method, reminiscent of the one used in the construction of the Egyptian pyramids, to extend the Skywalk out over the Grand Canyon's edge. This innovative approach allowed for an unobstructed view from the bridge, providing visitors with a breathtaking experience.

The foundation of the Skywalk was carefully constructed by anchoring support beams deep into the red limestone bedrock of the site, acting as counterweight rods. This strategic placement allows the Skywalk to delicately extend beyond the canyon's edge without requiring direct support from underneath. To ensure structural integrity, highly skilled craftsmen utilized 1.2 million pounds of steel and glass in the construction process. The bridge features specially designed glass units capable of accommodating up to 800 individuals simultaneously.

Moreover, the engineering prowess behind the Skywalk is evident in its robust design. The structure is engineered to withstand significant forces, including an 8.0 magnitude earthquake, wind speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, and the weight equivalent to seventy-one 747 airplanes. This remarkable engineering feat showcases the meticulous planning and attention to detail that went into creating the Skywalk, making it a remarkable modern marvel for visitors to behold.

What is the Historical Significance of Eagle Point?

The historical significance of Eagle Point and the Eagle Rock formation lies in the rich cultural traditions and legends of the Hualapai people. According to the Hualapai myth, a giant eagle played a pivotal role in saving the Hualapai tribe from a great flood that carved the Grand Canyon. This eagle is said to have turned into stone at Eagle Point and symbolizes the protection and guidance provided to the Hualapai people during times of peril.

The eagle rock formation at Eagle Point serves as a tangible connection to this mythological narrative, allowing visitors to witness and appreciate the integral role that the eagle plays in Indigenous cultures. Not only is the Eagle Rock formation a geological wonder, but it also represents the enduring spirit and resilience of the Hualapai people.

Visitors to Eagle Point can view the Eagle Rock formation from various vantage points, including the Skywalk and the Sky View Restaurant, where they can observe the awe-inspiring sight of the eagle preserved in stone. This iconic landmark serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness between nature, mythology, and the cultural heritage of the Hualapai tribe.

Grand Canyon Skywalk

The Grand Canyon Skywalk takes you over the edge on the first-ever 4,000-foot high glass bridge. This attraction is located only 2 ½ hours away from Las Vegas by road and only 45 minutes by air. Grand Canyon Skywalk is part of Grand Canyon West, which is most accessible from Las Vegas. And while you're in the area, popular Skywalk trips include eagle-eye views of Lake Mead and Hoover Dam on a premier helicopter or airplane tour from Las Vegas .

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a rare architectural accomplishment that extends 70 feet past the edge of the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. Visitors of the Grand Canyon Skywalk can walk over the western rim of the Grand Canyon on a clear, glass-floored structure built to withstand over 71 million pounds of weight, and experience the sensation of seeing the canyon fall straight away below their feet. The Skywalk was made to withstand high winds, harsh winter weather conditions, and forces of nature beyond what is typical for the area. The Skywalk is so strong it can hold the weight of 71 loaded 747 passenger planes stacked on top of one another.

How to See the Skywalk When Traveling from Las Vegas

This amazing structure located on the Hualapai Tribe's Grand Canyon West, is best accessed on an array of half-day and full-day tour options from Las Vegas. There are several Grand Canyon tour companies from Las Vegas that package the Skywalk with helicopter tours, airplane or ground tours, plus tours of Hoover Dam on the way to the Skywalk. Most Grand Canyon Las Vegas tour companies offer hotel pick-up and customizable add-on side trips. If you choose to visit the Skywalk without a tour company, use the hop-on-hop-off shuttle to tour Grand Canyon West's three main points of interest. We recommend upgrading your entrance package to include everything from horseback riding to Canyon floor helicopter landings to pontoon boat rides on the Colorado River.

Grand Canyon Skywalk is a one-of-a kind experience. Everything to know before you visit

grand canyon skywalk tours

If a hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon isn't your thing, try seeing it from a glass-bottom overlook instead.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk offers the chance to see the canyon's western end from a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends 70 feet over the canyon's rim. The view looks out over the canyon bottom 4,000 below.

The Skywalk, at Grand Canyon West on the Hualapai Indian Reservation in northwestern Arizona, is a different experience from Grand Canyon National Park. In addition to the glass bridge, activities at Grand Canyon West include zip lining, rafting, helicopter tours and pontoon boat tours.

Here's a complete visitor guide to the Grand Canyon Skywalk at Grand Canyon West.

Why these itineraries? New weekend road trips ranking includes these 2 Arizona destinations

Where is Grand Canyon Skywalk?

Grand Canyon Skywalk at Grand Canyon West is on the Hualapai Indian Reservation about 75 miles north of Kingman and 236 miles from the Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim.

The glass bridge is accessible via a building on Eagle Point Road that directly faces the Skywalk. Getting there requires taking a complimentary shuttle bus from the parking lot to the Skywalk entrance; the Hualapai Tribe does not allow private vehicles to drive to the Skywalk.

What does the view from the glass walk look like?

From the platform, visitors have an elevated view of the canyons of Eagle Point, named because it appears to resemble an eagle in flight.

Below the glass, they'll see a portion of the rocky canyon bottom.

Be aware you'll share the Skywalk with dozens of other visitors. Grand Canyon West's website touts the glass bridge as strong enough to support the weight of 70 Boeing 747 jumbo jets at full capacity, but the experience may be overwhelming for those afraid of heights.

How long does it take to do the Grand Canyon Skywalk?

Allow at least three hours to experience Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk.

Besides the Skywalk, Grand Canyon West has canyon overlooks, hiking trails at Hualapai Point and Guano Point, rafting along the Colorado River, helicopter and pontoon boat tours, Native American cultural experiences and a zipline.

Grand Canyon West has four places where you can shop: a gift shop at the Skywalk's main terminal, Walapai Trading Post at Hualapai Point, and a jewelry/gift shop and a Native American flea market at Guano Point.

What are the restaurants at Grand Canyon West?

Grand Canyon West has four restaurants:

Sky View Restaurant: It overlooks the Skywalk and offers dishes such as steak and chicken bowls and chicken tenders. Vegetarian options are available. Open 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m. daily.

Skywalk Cafe: Grab-and-go restaurant with cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches and chicken tenders. Open 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m. daily.

Guano Point Cafe: Grab-and-go restaurant with a limited menu of barbecue specialties like pulled pork and fire-braised chicken thighs. Open 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m. daily.

Gwe Ma'jo: This restaurant serves food based on traditional Hualapai Tribe recipes, such as fry bread tacos and Hualapai pinion stew. Breakfast is available Wednesdays-Saturdays. Open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily.

Outside food and beverages are not permitted at Grand Canyon West.

How much are Grand Canyon Skywalk tickets?

Grand Canyon West uses dynamic pricing: The ticket cost depends on demand. Admission for Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk are priced separately, starting at $49 and $26 per person, respectively, or a total of $75 for both attractions.

The Grand Package, which includes Grand Canyon West general admission and Skywalk access, starts at $64 per person.

Experiences such as zip lining and helicopter tours cost extra.

Tickets are available at grandcanyonwest.com/tickets .

Why can’t you take pictures on the Grand Canyon Skywalk?

Visitors aren't allowed to bring cameras, cellphones or any other personal items for safety reasons, including protecting the glass bottom of the platform. They must store their belongings in a locker before entering.

The only way to have your picture taken at the Skywalk is by a professional photographer. Digital photo packages are $69 and come on a USB thumb drive. Printed photos are not available, according to Grand Canyon West staff.

Is Grand Canyon Skywalk the same as Grand Canyon National Park?

No. Grand Canyon West, which is operated by the Hualapai Tribe, is a separate attraction from Grand Canyon National Park, operated by the National Park Service and located on 11 tribes’ ancestral homelands.

Grand Canyon National Park consists of the canyon's North Rim and South Rim. The South Rim is a 236-mile drive from the Skywalk, while the North Rim is a 393-mile drive from the Skywalk. Admission to the national park is $35 per vehicle for a seven-day pass.

Because Grand Canyon West is not a National Park Service site, it does not accept the America the Beautiful pass and other national park passes for entry.

How far is it to the Grand Canyon Skywalk from Phoenix?

Grand Canyon Skywalk is 262 miles from central Phoenix, according to Google Maps, via Interstate 10, Loop 303, U.S. 60 (which becomes U.S. 93), I-40 and Stockton Hill Road.

Possible side trip: What's new in Sedona for 2023, from luxury hotels to outdoor guides

How far is it to the Grand Canyon Skywalk from Las Vegas?

Grand Canyon Skywalk is a 130-mile drive from Las Vegas via Interstate 515, U.S. 93 and Pierce Ferry Road.

What hotels and lodging are near Grand Canyon Skywalk?

Grand Canyon West offers RV parking for up to three nights for $22 per night; there are no hookups or dump stations. There are three other lodging options within a 20-mile radius of the Grand Canyon Skywalk:

The Cabins at Grand Canyon West: This complex on Hualapai Point offers rustic cabins that can sleep up to six people. Everything to Know about the Grand Canyon Skywalk Glass Bridge

Towering 4,000 feet above the grand canyon is the $30-million skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass walkway..

The Grand Canyon Skywalk

Built in 2007, the Skywalk gives you the feeling you are walking on air. In fact, you’ll see some tourists anxiously grab the handrails with their eyes shut. Don’t miss the exhibits on Hualapai history inside the Skywalk building.

In addition, a photo opportunity is available with authentic Hualapai Tribe members is included with every tour package, and photos can be purchased afterward.

Operation Hours of the Skywalk

During Winter (mid-October to mid-April), the Skywalk is open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. During Summer (May 1 to mid-October), the Skywalk is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

History of the Skywalk Bridge

The Grand Canyon Skywalk cost $30 million to construct and was funded by Hualapai Indian tribe in partnership with Chinese-American businessman David Jin. Built to withstand 100 mph winds, the Skywalk’s frame was constructed with 100 million pounds of steel.

Founder Jin describes his vision for the Skywalk this way: “Just like an eagle can fly into the Grand Canyon, my vision was to enable visitors to walk the path of the eagle, and become surrounded by the Grand Canyon while standing at the edge of the Glass Bridge.

“The Bridge gives us a chance to share the wonder of the Canyon that the Hualapai Tribe has graciously offered. My dream was to find a balance between form, function and nature.”

Take a Walk on The Grand Canyon Skywalk

Take a Walk on Skywalk

At grand canyon west.

The Skywalk at Grand Canyon West is nothing short of an engineering marvel. At 4,000 feet above the Grand Canyon floor and extending 70 feet over the Canyon, there’s simply nothing like it anywhere in the world. So just what can you expect when you walk the Skywalk?

Take a Walk on the Skywalk

The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive is that there are no railings around the Canyon.  You literally can walk up to the edge and peer down. The effect that can have varies by person. A natural reaction for visitors is nervousness at the sheer heights of the Canyon walls. But the thrill of walking across the sky on the Skywalk makes it all worth it.

The Skywalk is the largest cantilever glass bridge in the world, weighing 1.2 million pounds. It is constructed out of 46 panes of glass, each weighing about 1,800 pounds. The Skywalk sits above the Canyon floor at almost twice as high as any high-rise in the world. Even at this height, there’s no need to be nervous walking on the sky, the Skywalk can hold 71 million pounds and can withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake.

Take a Walk on The Grand Canyon Skywalk

Everyone is welcome on the Skywalk, including children who are old enough to walk on their own. Most of the terrain at Grand Canyon West is rugged so wearing either hiking shoes or tennis shoes is strongly encouraged during your visit, and shoes are required at all times, including on the Skywalk. When you arrive, you’ll receive booties to cover your shoes to protect the glass as you walk on the sky.

Guests cannot bring anything with them on the skywalk: no purses or backpacks and definitely no cell phones or cameras. The restrictions are necessary to protect not only the glass surfaces you are walking on, but also to keep the Canyon free from any possible falling debris. There are free lockers available at the entrance for storing your valuables.

Even without your own camera, you can get fantastic photographs of this bucket list experience. Trained photographers line the Skywalk who will take pictures of you and your family in a variety of poses. You are encouraged to get as playful as you’d like on the Skywalk. Photos are often taken of guests lying or sitting on the glass floor, in yoga poses and more. Photos can be purchased by the print or on a USB drive with all your photos.

How much time it takes you to complete the Skywalk is completely up to you. The views are amazing and everyone at Grand Canyon West wants you to soak it up while you are there. Just make sure you are aware of the guests around you, and be aware of those who are having their photographs taken.

The Skywalk is on the Hualapai Reservation and was built to give people from around the world the opportunity to walk on the sky above a wonder of the world. You’ll find the people of the Hualapai Tribe who work at the Skywalk offer a treasure trove of insights and information. The Grand Canyon is an impressive sight, whether you’re exploring the Rim’s many scenic viewpoints or venturing down into the chasm on one of the Canyon’s hiking trails. But there’s one way to see the Grand Canyon that simply nothing compares to – from the Grand Canyon Skywalk!

The Skywalk, located on the West Rim of the Grand Canyon, is a U-shaped glass cantilever bridge that extends 70 feet out from the Rim at Eagle Point. Nothing gets your adrenaline pumping faster than peering 4,000 feet straight down to the Canyon floor through several inches of glass!

Skywalk Design

The Skywalk was first envisioned by Las Vegas businessperson David Jin when he visited the Grand Canyon in 1996. Jin worked with three companies to bring the Skywalk to life: Lochsa Engineering and MRJ Architects supplied the design and engineering, and Executive Construction Management oversaw the construction of the bridge.

The cantilever bridge rests on a foundation of 8 columns that support box beams that are six feet tall, 32 inches wide, with two inch thick walls. These box beams serve as counterweights for the cantilever design, and are anchored by 45-foot-deep foundations in limestone bedrock capable of supporting 16,000 lbs of pressure per square inch.

The Skywalk itself is supported on tuned mass dampers that reduce normal vibrations caused by wind and people. These dampers help also distribute the weight of the bridge.

Construction

Construction of the Skywalk began on October 6, 2004 when the Hualapai tribe blessed the site. Drilling began one month later, and wouldn’t be complete for an additional 1.5 years. It took a Utah-based manufacturer an additional four months to weld the 40 foot beams that would be used to create the Skywalk and truck them to the construction site in Arizona.

The Skywalk was assembled on site and lifted into place using manipulators specially designed to lift the heavy glass panels using large suction cups. 2.5 years after construction began, these glass panels were rolled into place using the same method the ancient Egyptians used to build the pyramids. Watch this video to learn more:

The completed Skywalk is reported to have cost $30 million to build. It weighs well over a million pounds, with the steel alone weighing in at 1,000,000 lbs and the glass floor an additional 80,000 lbs.

The Skywalk first opened in March 2007. The first people to walk across its glass floor were Buzz Aldrin and Jon Herrington, the first native American astronaut.

The Glass Floor

When the Skywalk was first built, the glass floor consisted of four layers and 46 panels of low iron glass. It was four inches thick, 10’2” inches wide, and each panel weighed about a ton.

In 2011, the Skywalk floor was replaced with new glass manufactured in by a Spanish company that specializes in producing strong bomb-proof glass for embassies and other buildings. The new glass floor consists of five layers of glass measuring 2.5 inches thick, with each sheet weighing in at about 1,800 lbs. The panes are so heavy it actually took a 150 foot crane to lift each one into place!

The new floor also features a “sacrificial” layer of glass that can be removed and replaced by hand if it gets scratched – no giant crane required.

Is It Safe?

Yes! The Skywalk is perfectly safe. It can support over 71 million pounds – that’s the equivalent of more than 70 fully loaded 717 airplanes , or more than 800 200 lb people (though its maximum occupancy is only 120 people)! It can also withstand winds up to 100 miles per hour, as well as magnitude 8.0 earthquakes within a 50 mile radius.

You don’t have to worry about falling, either – the Skywalk is also surrounded by a 5’4” glass fence.

Skywalk Tourism

The Grand Canyon West region is not owned by the National Park Service like the North and South Rims. If you purchased an entry pass from the NPS, it will not be valid at Grand Canyon West.

The West Rim is maintained and operated by the Hualapai indians. To gain access to the West Rim’s viewpoints and attractions (including the Skywalk), you must purchase an admission package when you first arrive. There are different packages available at different prices ranging from $45-80 for adults – make sure you choose a package that includes a turn on the Skywalk! Some packages include meals. VIP packages and add-ons are also available.

Cameras and other personal items are not allowed on the Skywalk in case they fall and scratch the glass – or worse, if they’re accidentally dropped over the side of the bridge! Professional photographers are ready and waiting if you want a shot of you and your loved ones on the Skywalk, and souvenir photos can be purchased at the gift shop back on the Rim.

For more information on visiting the West Rim, read our West Rim Visitor’s Guide .

Grand Canyon Skywalk Tour

Depart from the world-famous Strip and head out over Las Vegas and the surrounding Mojave Desert on your direct helicopter flight to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. While en route to the canyon, you'll be treated to unforgettable views of Hoover Dam, an engineering marvel and true icon of the American West. Formed by the dam's construction in the 1930s, the sparkling Lake Mead puddles across the Colorado River Valley, making an excellent addition to this sightseeing tour. Other highlights of this portion of the tour include Fortification Hill, an extinct volcano, and Boulder City, originally built to house the dam construction workers.

On your Grand Canyon Skywalk tour, you'll pass over the towering West Rim before flying over the canyon for intimate views of the meandering bends of the Colorado River. Upon landing in the heart of Hualapai Indian Territory, get ready to explore a one-of-a-kind attraction, the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-bottom observation deck suspended nearly 4,000 feet above the Colorado River and more than 70 feet away from the canyon wall.

Expedited admission to the Skywalk, VIP ground transportation, and a Skywalk souvenir photo are included in this grand sightseeing adventure. To protect the glass walkway and preserve the Grand Canyon, no personal items are permitted on the Skywalk. This includes cameras, cellphones, strollers, purses, backpacks, etc.

The return flight affords you more splendid views of the canyon and Lake Mead. As you get closer to Las Vegas, you'll head to historic Downtown Las Vegas, home to Fremont Street and the city's oldest casinos. On your return flight continue south along Las Vegas Boulevard, where you'll savor unparalleled views of the world's most extravagant hotels, such as Bellagio and the iconic Caesars Palace.

Other highlights of this portion of the tour include Paris Las Vegas' Eiffel Tower, The Strat tower and The Mirage's volcanic landscaping.

Total ground time for this tour is approximately 45 minutes at Grand Canyon West.

But when you add to this grandeur a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge, suspended over the Colorado River below, that extends its 10-foot-wide path an incredible 70 feet out over the rim you have one of the most thrilling experiences in the world!

The Grand Canyon Skywalk opened in March 2007 and was certified by Guinness World Records as the world's highest observation deck at 4,000 feet above sea level.

Luckily, the most popular tourist attraction in all of the Grand Canyon is easily accessible to those traveling from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon Skywalk .

Stepping across the transparent glass floor of the Grand Canyon Skywalk, seeing the ground drop from beneath your feet as the Colorado River below comes into view, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for adventurers and sightseers alike.

About the Skywalk at Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon Skywalk construction took more than four years to complete and cost approximately $30 million. Commissioned and owned by the Hualapai Indian Tribe, the Grand Canyon Skywalk was opened in March of 2007, and surpassed one million visitors by 2015. The Skywalk is a true engineering marvel. Its reinforced construction contains 1.2 million pounds of steel and glass drilled nearly 50 feet deep into the Grand Canyon rim bedrock. This makes the Skywalk strong enough to hold seventy fully loaded 747 passenger jets! The floor of this spectacular bridge was constructed from four layers of low-iron glass, offering a perfectly-transparent view of the canyon floor and the Colorado River 4,000 feet beneath you. The U-shaped bridge extends 70 feet beyond the canyon's edge, which allows visitors to soak in a breathtaking 180-degree view of the canyon expanse. While the Grand Canyon National Park may be the more "famous" destination, this gravity-defying bridge can only be experienced at the Grand Canyon West Rim, which is owned and operated by the Hualapai Reservation.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is open seven days a week from 9:00am - 5:00 pm, with extended hours in the summer months. Admission fees vary depending on whether you purchase tickets in advance or on the day of your visit. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a popular attraction and can be quite busy, especially during peak hours. It is recommended that you arrive early to avoid the crowds.

Visitors should also note that there are restrictions on the type of items that can be taken onto the Grand Canyon Skywalk. No personal items, including bags, cellphones, cameras, food, or beverages, are allowed. Lockers are provided for personal items before stepping out onto the Skywalk glass. In addition, visitors are required to wear special shoe covers before entering the Skywalk, in order to protect the glass from damage and keep it safe for future visitors.

The Hualapai

The Hualapai people have inhabited the Grand Canyon West and Peach Springs, AZ area for centuries. The Hualapai tribe, a sovereign Indian nation federally recognized since 1883, holds the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River sacred. Tribal members share their culture, tribal heritage, and traditions at the Grand Canyon West self-guided Native American village tour located at Eagle Point. This location also contains a fantastic gift shop. When visiting the Skywalk, it is important to remember that you are wandering ancient lands, and must respect the peaceful nature belonging to these friendly people.

Getting to the Grand Canyon West Rim Skywalk
