Tour operator.

It's easy to see the world's sights. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds, and generally have the same standard-issue vacation as everyone else. But that's not good enough for us, and it's not good enough for you. We believe that travel should be easy. It should be fun. It should be worth your time and the price you paid. It should re-energize and transform. And above all else, it should be beyond the ordinary. Because how you see the world matters.

In 1882, Herman Tauck arrived in New York City from Germany in search of the American dream. His determination and values were passed on to his son, Arthur Tauck, who would realize that dream. With ingenuity and an innovative spirit, Arthur started Tauck Motor Tours, a travel company that would give birth to a new industry. The first tour, through the back roads of New England, was created by this 27-year-old in 1925. It embodied the same successful formula used by Tauck today: do the right thing. Craft a life-enriching travel experience; provide it at a single all-inclusive price; ensure there is great value for money; and rely on recommendations of satisfied customers to build a following and grow the business.

Two elements that did change over the next 90+ years – and three generations of Taucks – were the scope of destinations served and the variety of modes of travel used. Today Tauck delivers life-enriching travel experiences to every corner of the globe, incorporating small cruise ships, premium riverboats, trains, helicopters and more. What started as a New England motor coach tour company has truly evolved into an extraordinary global travel company. The fourth generation of Taucks is now involved in the company. While remarkable in any business, this seamless continuity across generations speaks to shared vision and values.

Throughout its history, the concept of “family” at Tauck has gone far beyond those sharing the surname to include hundreds of valued employees, and hundreds of thousands of loyal guests. The story of Tauck is the story of a unique American family company celebrating a passion for travel – a story that will continue to inspire generations to come.

TAUCK EXCLUSIVE – Filmed vignettes by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan share their own personal stories and tell the stories of those who shaped the creation & preservation of the six national parks

Experience six national parks over the course of 10 days as you explore the American Southwest. With feelings that evoke the haunting spirit of the desert – view the inspiring natural beauty, hear the stories of the spirit of the people, and feel the spiritual connection we all share with their special sites are at the heart of this vacation.

Stunning landscapes so arresting that they'll live forever in your mind's eye… impossible red rock arches opening before you like grand entryways, offering a sense of endless possibility… canyons and immense cliffs, seemingly carved by a giant to form an island in the sky… fanciful hoodoos come alive while gods and legends linger everywhere… how the human spirit is cheered and fortified by the spirit of the desert. On the ground or by air, explore Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion and Grand Canyon national parks. Fly over the remote reaches of Capitol Reef and see the Grand Canyon from the air en route to Las Vegas. Spend two nights on the Grand Canyon's North Rim for a fresh, "new" perspective of the park, enjoyed by fewer than 10% of park visitors. Enjoy independent sunrise and sunset spirit-of-the-moment experiences in the national parks… and gain insights through filmed vignettes by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, sharing their own personal stories and of those who shaped the creation of the national parks.

Year Round Offers

  • Special Savings for Single Travelers
  • Seasonal Price Savings for specific dates
  • Special Savings for Groups of 8, 10++

Tour begins: 5:30 PM,  Red Cliffs Lodge.  A transfer is included from Grand Junction Regional Airport to Red Cliffs Lodge in Moab, Utah. The "Spirit of the Desert" defies just one single definition. It's the spirit of the moment, a mood, a feeling harmonious with nature yet transcendent of earth and sky. It moves the senses to create, the mind and soul to soar, adventurers to be bold. And, starting tonight, you will become part of its amazing story. Learn about the days ahead through filmed vignettes by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, who explains:

"If you really want to witness the national parks when they're most beautiful, you want to see them at sunrise and sunset - the times when we typically shot most of the footage for our film. Nothing quite compares to those parts of the day. From 10 am to 3 pm, standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon is certainly awe-inspiring; but standing on the rim as the first rays of light hit the canyon, or when the last rays of a sinking sun move through it, is an experience beyond words."

In the vignette, Dayton introduces the "Dawn Patrol" and "Sunset Scouts," independent explorations that take place at these optimum times of the day; optional, they create an emotional connection to the parks that deepens your appreciation of all they offer. Following pre-dinner drinks featuring hot and cold canapés, join us for a "cowboy cookout" dinner at Red Cliffs Lodge as Tauck's  Spirit of the Desert begins.

A tour this morning of Arches National Park provides many unexpected sights. You won't believe your eyes as you travel through the park – there are more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches here, the world's largest concentration. You'll find several varieties of arches as well as pinnacles that absolutely soar skyward, tafoni, and wildlife that has acclimated to the desert landscape. The land was declared a national monument in 1929, taking 40+ years to achieve national park status. You're sure to recognize Balanced Rock along with a variety of other sensational geological formations during guided sightseeing before a visit to the fun little town of Moab for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure at your Colorado River lodge, where activities such as horseback riding can be arranged individually (additional cost). You may wish to take a walk before dinner; your evening is spent at the lodge, which is steeped in the authenticity of its architectural style that truly defines what "the West" is all about.

Join your Tauck Director for a different type of exploring – a scenic float trip along the Colorado River* where rock towers, colors and light reflect upon the water like mirror images. Depart for the fun little town of Moab, then on to Canyonlands National Park, whose countless canyons, mesas and buttes shadow the Colorado River and the Green River. These rivers divide the park into four districts – and today you'll explore the northern section, Island in the Sky. There is no better way to experience Canyonlands than at sunset – and the setting sun, during a picnic dinner at Dead Horse Point overlooking the U-turn in the Colorado River, is nothing short of inspirational.

Enjoy some free time this morning – you might want to rise early and catch a beautiful sunrise, or explore the Film Museum at the Lodge. For the past 70 years, many of the most famous western movies were filmed in and around Moab – learn about the filming locations and the stars who brought them to life. Vignettes today include Dayton Duncan's insights on the best way to access the major sights in the national parks; some are available at a turnout, while others require back-country hiking or an aerial overview... like the way you'll see Capitol Reef National Park today, on a flightseeing excursion. Cross the Waterpocket Fold, which is sort of a "warp" in the Earth's crust that runs nearly 100 miles, and see Strike Valley, the spectacular sandstone Capitol Domes, colorful cliffs, soaring spires, odd monoliths and more. Arrive at Bryce Canyon National Park, home to some of Earth's more whimsical geologic formations; spend some time at the Visitor's Center and enjoy some free time before dinner.

You may want to rise early this morning to catch the shocking array of colors illuminated by the first rays of light throughout the park. More of a series of horseshoe "amphitheatres" than a canyon, morning walks reveal millions of pinnacles positively glowing... This afternoon, depart for Zion National Park; en route you'll learn about the park's complicated creation via a film vignette by Ken Burns, who shares his favorite memories of the park. Tour the park by narrated tram through Zion Valley, traveling to the Temple of Sinawava and the Great White Throne, then have some free time to explore as you please.

" I was so impressed by the red cliffs and wilderness surroundings of Zion Canyon that I determined we should... have it made a national park. " The words of conservationist Horace Albright set the stage for the expansion of national park designations in the Southwest, and the creation of Zion National Park in 1919. Zion's most striking images are unique sandstone cliffs that range from towering monoliths to narrow canyons, changing in color from light cream to pink to red. Today you are free to do as you wish; walk the trails to the Emerald Pools and the Court of the Patriarchs, perhaps do some hiking, or pursue other activities that interest you – there are a lot of possibilities within Zion including the Virgin River, which is a tributary of the Colorado River that earned the designation "wild and scenic." And the night sky is most memorable.

A film vignette by Dayton Duncan tells the story of Grand Canyon National Park, and how it exemplified the struggle that often occurred when creating a new national park. Leave Zion, and en route to Grand Canyon National Park get a guided tour of fascinating Pipe Spring National Monument to learn about Paiute Indian and Mormon pioneer history. Following lunch, drive to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park; more remote, it is less crowded than the South Rim – with fewer than 10% of the park's total annual visitors. Dinner tonight is at your lodge, North Rim Lodge, situated on the rim of the canyon; the amazing views from the deck are truly panoramic.

The North Rim is special at sunrise – well worth viewing (but remember, it comes pretty early)! Naturalist John Muir remarked: " The dawn, as in all the pure, dry desert country is ineffably beautiful; and when the first level sunbeams sting the domes and spires, with what a burst of power the big, wild days begin ." Join us for a tour today that takes in some of the magnificent North Rim views, including Cape Royal and Point Imperial. Enjoy some free time today to explore the park as you please; optional activities include additional ranger talks, mule rides and more. Whatever your choice, your days in the national parks create memories to treasure.

Today is your final day to view a spectacular sunrise, this time from the North Rim of the canyon. The last of our vignettes features reflections by Ken Burns about our own private memories of the national parks – these memories are not about the "views," but instead they are the memories of those you shared the views with. Dayton Duncan's vignette explains how the parks belong to all of us, and the need to continue to help to protect them for future generations. The most fitting farewell to the Southwest and the Spirit of the Desert is a flightseeing trip from Kanab over the western regions of the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas for your return home. Join us tonight for a farewell reception and dinner at your Four Seasons hotel.

Tour ends: Las Vegas. Fly home anytime. A transfer is included from Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. Checkout time is 12:00 noon. Allow a minimum of two hours for flight check-in.

Legendary Journeys and Adventures

Stunning landscapes so arresting that they'll live forever in your mind's eye… impossible red rock arches opening before you like grand entryways, offering a sense of endless possibility… canyons and immense cliffs, seemingly carved by a giant to form an island in the sky… fanciful hoodoos come alive while gods and legends linger everywhere… how the human spirit is cheered and fortified by the spirit of the desert.

Picnic at dead horse point state park, sunset picnic dinner at dead horse point state park overlooking canyonlands.

Perched some 2,000 feet directly above a dramatic horseshoe bend in the Colorado River, Utah's Dead Horse Point State Park offers a spectacular panoramic view overlooking the sculptured pinnacles, mesas and buttes of the adjacent Canyonlands National Park. And it's a perfectly breathtaking – and breathtakingly perfect – spot for a private Tauck picnic dinner at sunset that's nothing short of inspirational.

Inside-the-park stays in the national parks

Experience the west's great national parks from inside-the-park lodges.

On Tauck's "Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest," you'll experience six of the region's great national parks as a true insider. And you'll explore three of them – Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion – from sought-after lodges situated right inside national parks, several of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tauck arranges coveted accommodations at these inside-the-park lodges, often sold out a year in advance: Grand Canyon Lodge – North Rim in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona; The Lodge at Bryce Canyon in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah; and Zion Lodge in Zion National Park, Utah. (Exception dates do apply; see specific tour departure date for more information.)

Red Cliffs Lodge

Nights 1, 2 and 3

Among red-rock cliffs on the banks of the Colorado

Situated near Moab, Utah, at the foot of dramatic red-rock cliffs beside the Colorado River's best white-water rapids, Red Cliffs Lodge occupies a classic, rugged Western landscape worthy of Hollywood – and was in fact the location of numerous movies, including "Rio Grande" with John Wayne. Red Cliffs Lodge is also home to the Castle Creek Winery, the largest in Utah; the Moab Movie Museum, chronicling the rich history of filmmaking in the region; and the Cowboy Grill, offering delicious Western fare.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,   you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking  here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S ., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries , you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here . Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your other flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

The moderately active Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest adventure takes place in the mountain heights of the U.S. national parks. To enjoy this trip, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

Some of the excursions on this tour are:

  • Two Flightseeing Adventures over the extraordinary remote reaches of Capitol Reef National Park; and witness stunning panoramas on a flight from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas
  • A mild-to-moderate river rafting trip on the Colorado River

Although the hotels and lodges do have rooms that are handicap accessible, if you are traveling with a wheelchair or portable oxygen, we strongly recommend that you consult with your physician to determine whether this tour is appropriate for you.

Strenuous exercise at high elevations should be avoided.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather you will encounter on this journey ranges from hot and dry in Arizona and Nevada to cool and dry at the higher elevations in the national parks. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for Spirit of the Desert: The National Parks of the Southwest :

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Windbreaker for the raft trip
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Telephoto lens
  • Backpack or belt-pack
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

What's Included

Reviews from travellers on this tour, red rocks and painted canyons.

Our first trip with Tauck and we look forward to many more. Through the seamlessly run tour - we were able to relax and enjoy, and see much more than if we had done it on our own. We had an excellent guide and driver, as well as great local guides. Staying at the coveted in-the-park lodges was super convenient. A+ experience and itinerary! Riding the mules in Bryce, rafting down the Colorado River, ending in the Vegas Four Seasons felt like a luxurious mini vacation (we added an extra night)

Bridges Red Rocks - Rocks

Traveling with our grand children and their parents, along with other families with their respective children and grand children, made this trip thoroughly enjoyable for everyone. A wide variety of experiences and the famous red rocks pictures will be lasting memories for all of us. The accommodations were spot on. Rafting down the Colorado River and seeing big horn sheep, and the polar bear dip in the cold river on a hot day.

America's natural beauty needs to be visited.

A wonderful Tauck week visiting Arizona's and Utah's Canyonlands. So beautiful to see with new friends, and an awesome tour director and coach driver. Lodging was great, food was superb, and we gained much knowledge of the creation of the canyon surroundings. Our memories are filled with our recent adventure to a place that everyone should visit. Hiking a short distance down in the Grand Canyon, horseback riding in Bryce, float trip down the Colorado River, flying to and viewing Monument Valley up close, sailing on Lake Powell, eating at Bryce Canyon Lodge, meeting new friends, Jeep ride in Sedona, the whole trip was memorable.

A fantastic week in the National Parks

This was our best family trip ever. It was well planned and seamlessly coordinated. I was not sure whether our kids would mix well but they had a great time with the other kids. The scenery was breathtaking. There is a lot of travelling on this tour but our fab tour director was constantly keeping the interest levels up. I highly recommend. Seeing Bryce Canyon for the first time, the view over Lake Powell, and the trip to Monument Valley

Once in a lifetime family experience!!! Simply spectacular!!!

This was an amazing trip!! From the moment we arrived at the Four Seasons in Scottsdale, to our last moment in Las Vegas - this will be a trip for the record books! If you want to see the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, up close and personal, this is the trip to go on as a family!! Nothing short of amazing!! There were so many memorable moments that it is hard to pick just one. We traveled with our 13 year old daughter and her sisters - 23 and 25. Overall, we all loved rafting down the Colorado River in Lake Powell, the majestic views of the Grand Canyon at sunrise (make sure to wake up to see it), and Zion National Park! Bryce Canyon was great too!

RED ROCKS and CANYONLANDS

My husband and I have traveled with Tauck for 40 years but this is the first time that we took a "Bridges" tour with our 13 year old granddaughter and it was more than we could have imagined. From the very informative and professional tour guide to the wonderful hotels that we stayed in, it was great. The pink jeep ride and the float trip down the Colorado River was awesome.

Wonderful family trip

Your Bridges Red Rocks and Painted Canyons tour was a wonderful trip for grandparents, children and grandchildren to share. It gave us all great joy to discover the beauty of our amazing country together. Tauck, as usual, did a wonderful job planning it all. Highlights included rafting in the Colorado and trail ride in Bryce. Will be back soon. Rafting

A whirlwind tour of the Southwest

This was the first time I've toured with Tauck. My 9-year old and I had a blast! I was thrilled that we could visit so many well-known national parks, and that special tours were waiting for us at each site. All the kids on the tour played well together. The only downside is that it was a bit too hectic. One less site would have been fine with me. Heading down the Angel Rim trail at the Grand Canyon at sunrise. I wish I had checked a map before we started. We went past the 1st tunnel, but I didn't realize until afterwards that we could have easily made it to the 2nd tunnel and back out before breakfast.

We spent 8 days in the national parks, including the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion and Lake Powell. All were terrific experiences. Lake Powell less so. Accommodations were fair to good, just fair at Lake Powell. As well, there was a lot of down time at Lake Powell that was difficult to fill, as the pool facilities were inadequate, and the service poor. The Grand Canyon is awesome! Bryce and Zion beautiful as well. But, none others compare to the Grand Canyon.

Red Rocks/Red Hot

Because of timing...we went on the July 2nd trip...it was extremely hot and left us no choice but to look for AC whenever possible...the bus rides were looong...the food just adequate...and our tour guide did not really engage the kids or encourage introductions...I have been on Tauck family trips before but would not recommend this one... Yes we did have memorable moments but they were pre planned...e.g...scenic plane ride..Lake Powell..Float ride on the Colorado river...beautiful Bryce...lovely Zion...

The Meandering Traveler

A Travel Blog with Travel Tips and Interesting Facts

Spotlight: A Trio Of Tauck Small Group Journeys Close To Home

Savannah's Forsyth Park. Photo by Tauck.

“Small is big” aptly describes Tauck’s growing philosophy about escorted tours. It’s ramped up the number of small group land tour departures offered in 2023.

Tauck plans 35 percent more Small Group Journeys this year, when compared to pre-pandemic levels.

An enticing mix of 75 Small Group Journeys offer travel across the globe in 2023. But for today’s blog, we opted to look at a trio of enticing, “closer to home” options including, for example, Savannah, GA ( see photo above; photo by Tauck ).

So, keep reading below for a bit more detail about our selections. Plus, we’ll show you how to secure a handy e-brochure outlining all of Tauck’s 2023 small group options.

Tauck’s Philosophy

Before we get to that, though, let’s briefly review Tauck’s philosophy and what a Small Group Journey actually entails. Simply put, Tauck recognizes that many travelers love an escorted tour with all the vacation details handled, the services of a professional tour guide, exclusive events or inclusions and immersive sightseeing.

But the tour operator also knows that, increasingly, many travelers, while enjoying the socialization, camaraderie and cost savings that can be delivered via booking a group tour, also prefer not to travel with a huge entourage. They just don’t want to travel with 35 to 45 other people. They desire a better guest-to-guide ratio.

So, Tauck’s Small Group Journeys instead average just 24 passengers. And for many of Tauck’s African safaris, there are as few as 18 guests on all departures.

“Our guests understand and appreciate that they’re able to immerse themselves in the destination in a more interactive and authentic way, and enjoy a more engaging and enriching experience, when they travel in a smaller, more intimate group setting,” says Dan Mahar , Tauck’s CEO.

While the onset of Covid boosted the appeal of small group travel for very different reasons, he noted that even before the pandemic, Tauck was already moving firmly in that direction.

Spotlight: Small Group Journey – Eastern U.S.

Tauck offers at least seven small group journeys within the eastern U.S. For example, travelers can explore “Cape Cod, the Islands and Newport,” “Grand New England,” “ Bluegrass and Blue Ridges: Louisville to Nashville ,” “Michigan’s Lakes and Mackinac Island,” “Hidden Gems of New England” and “New Orleans and Mississippi River Country.”

Historic mansion in Savannah, GA. Photo by Tauck.

For our spotlight in the eastern U.S., The Meandering Traveler has selected the eight-day “ Southern Charms: Savannah, Hilton Head and Charleston .” It’s a designated Ken Burns American Journey too.

Guests start their tour in Savannah , GA., and visit Fort Pulaski National Monument. Then the tour winds its way up the southeastern U.S. coastline to Hilton Head Island , SC, before continuing to Beaufort , SC, and  Charleston , SC.

Local Insight and Sea Isles

“Tauck Exclusives” on this small group journey include the chance to view film narratives with Civil War insight by documentary filmmaker Ken Burns; a taste of Savannah’s beloved Madeira traditions at the Federal-style Davenport House Museum; and a tour of the sea islands off Beaufort, South Carolina

Shelby Steudle , president, Pavlus Travel , the world’s largest seller of Tauck tours, also points to other value-added inclusions. “Tauck’s guests will also enjoy dinner at 45 Bistro in The Marshall House, Savannah’s oldest hotel,” she says. “They’ll also visit Savannah’s Massie Heritage Center and enjoy a culinary demonstration and lunch featuring Low Country cuisine .”

More Details

This small group journey is offered in April and May 2023, and again in September and October 2023, as well as in 2024. At press time, 2023 pricing started at $4,990 per person, double occupancy; pricing is subject to change.

Click on this website page for more details about the “ Southern Charms: Savannah, Hilton Head and Charleston ” itinerary.

Spotlight: Small Group Journey – American West

In the American West region, Tauck offers eight small group journeys. These tours will take travelers to California’s national parks, New Mexico’s scenic spots, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and other western U.S. destinations.

Our Small Group Journeys pick for the American West? To combine the best of the great outdoors, national parks and American gaming glitz, we’ve selected the eight-day “ America’s Canyonlands .”

The dramatic scenery of Bryce Canyon National Park. Photo by Tauck.

Tour goers will explore Grand Canyon National Park , as well as Bryce Canyon National Park ( shown in the photo above ) and Zion National Park. Zion is famed for its massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink and red. This tour also includes Lake Powell, Glen Canyon, and yes, Las Vegas too.

As this is a Ken Burns American Journey tour, Tauck’s guests will hear insider stories about the national parks during filmed narratives by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan.  Another Tauck exclusive is a champagne welcome and private yacht dinner cruise on scenic Lake Powell .

Park Accommodations

During this small group tour, guests will stay at inside-the-park accommodations at three national parks – Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion . Plus, they’ll go “flightseeing” over Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

As for enrichment, Tauck’s guests will gain insight into the Grand Canyon’s ecology from a geology expert

The Small Group Journeys depart on multiple dates between April and October 2023, as well as in 2024. At press time, 2023 pricing for this Small Group Journeys tour started at $5,290 per person, double occupancy; pricing is subject to change.

Again, you’ll find the full itinerary here, and be sure to contact your professional travel advisor for questions and booking.

Spotlight: Small Group Journey – Hawaii

In our third spotlight pick,  The Meandering Traveler singles out Tauck’s 12-day “ The Best of Hawaii ” escorted small group journey. Travelers will journey to four Hawaiian Islands — Oahu, Hawaii, Kauai and Maui .

For all 11 nights, guests will stay in lovely oceanview rooms at beachfront island resorts. Here’s the line-up of hotel stays:  The Royal Hawaiian, A Luxury Collection Resort , at Waikiki, Oahu (nights 1-3); the Fairmont Orchid , Hawaii, along the Kohala Coast (nights 4-6); the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa , Koloa, Kauai (nights 7-8); and the Fairmont Kea Lani , Maui (nights 9-11).

Among the sightseeing highlights are Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kailua-Kona, to name just a few. Tour goers will also visit the USS Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor on Oahu.

Tauck Exclusives

Tauck Exclusives include a private evening with an after-hours tour, reception and dinner at Queen Emma Summer Palace on Oahu. Plus, tour guests will make a pre-opening visit to magnificent Iolani Palace , the opulent official residence of Hawaii’s former monarchy.

For a bird’s-eye view of Hawaii’s gorgeous scenery, they’ll set off for helicopter flightseeing on Kauai. On Maui, they’ll enjoy a festive evening of dance, song and exotic flavors at a traditional Hawaiian luau.

At press time, pricing for this Small Group Journey started at $11,690 and is subject to change. Departure dates are from April through November in both 2023 and 2024.

Click on this link for more about “ The Best of Hawaii ” itinerary. Also, “be sure to chat with a personal travel planner if you have questions, desire to talk about vacation options or are ready to book this small group escorted tour for 2023 or 2024,” says Pavlus Travel’s Steudle.

In a previous blog in February 2023, we profiled one personal travel planner, Jamie Roach.

Small Group Journeys – New E-Brochure

For the full listing of Small Group Journeys in North America and farther across the globe, check out Tauck’s new 28-page “e-brochure .” Here you’ll find more information about the benefits of small group travel and all itineraries where small group departures are available.

Small group sizes don’t apply only to tours either. This concept also extends to Tauck’s small-ship ocean cruise or European river cruise offerings. For more information, talk with a travel advisor or check out Tauck online.

Tourists love taking road trips from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon to experience adventure and zest.

A collection of tours from Las Vegas offer travelers a chance to explore the glory of the Grand Canyon along with the hidden gems of the sin city . This was once the land where ancestral tribes made their homes. However, erosion stripped everything off, and what remained was just layers of red rocks. Explore The West Rim With Hoover Dam And Skywalk

Grand Canyon is one of the natural seven wonders of the world for good reason. The majestic expanse attracts people from across the world, and the West Rim has a lot of spots for tourists to cover. The Skywalk offers travelers a chance to see the depths of the Canyon. This magnificent 10-foot wide, horseshoe-shaped glass bridge spans 70 feet out over the Grand Canyon's rim and provides a clear view down to the Canyon's floor, which is 4,000 feet away. Nothing compares to the rush of walking out onto glass at the height of thousands of feet, yet there's no need to worry because Skywalk is sturdy enough to support 70 fully loaded 747 passenger aircraft.

Along with that, travelers can visit the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River on the same day.

Walk Through The Antelope Canyon

Antelope is the most snapped slot canyon in the southwest of the United States because of its wave-like structure, which gives the canyon a distinctive appearance. Summer is the most popular season for exploring the canyon since the weather is milder and there is less possibility of rain. Visitors from all over the world come to see its magnificent red and orange sandstone cliffs, which were eroded over many years by wind and water. Because of the canyon's unusual geometry, the sunlight reflects off its walls in fascinating patterns, producing a constantly shifting light display.

  • Tour: Small-Group Antelope Canyon & Horseshoe Bend Tour from Las Vegas
  • Cost: From $249.99/person
  • Duration: 14 hours

The Navajo term for the Upper Antelope Canyon is Tsé bighánln, which translates to "the place where water runs through rocks."

Celebrate Art At Seven Magic Mountains

A celebration of art and color , it rises more than 30 feet above the Nevada Desert and is constructed of seven enormous towers built of enormous colorful neon stones. The Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone claims that the Seven Magic Mountains reflect the blending of the man-made and the natural, as well as the passing traffic on the highway and the nearby mountains and lakes. The unique juxtaposition of the brown landscape with the bright and vibrant boulders is very interesting for tourists to observe and marvel over.

  • Tour: Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, 7 Magic Mountains Small Group VIP Tour
  • Cost: From $199.99/person

Explore Bryce Canyon And Zion National Park

Bryce Canyon, which is celebrating an entire century of wonder, is most renowned for its hoodoos, which are artistically sculpted rock spires that erosion has left intact. The greatest places to see hoodoos are along our day hiking paths, which provide a close-up and personal view of these unusual rock formations. The Bryce Canyon Amphitheater region is where you'll find the majority of the gorgeous day hikes and trailheads. In contrast, the backcountry paths of Bryce Canyon provide woods and meadows, breathtaking vistas of far-off cliffs, and isolation, but fewer hoodoos. On the other hand, Zion's distinctive collection of flora and animals will amaze you as you take in the past's rich history and the present's exhilarating experiences.
