Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

The mighty Great Lakes have played a vital role in the history and cultural fabric of North America for centuries... explore their storied waters... and unique cities and towns... that have grown along their shores...

See for yourself what small ship cruising is all about, the majesty of niagara falls, experiencing the thunder of niagara falls on the us-canadian border.

North America's most powerful waterfall – and one of its most famous and often-visited natural treasures – Niagara Falls actually comprises three distinctive waterfalls on the Niagara River, perched on the border of Ontario, Canada and New York. Every minute, some six million cubic feet of water plunges over the crests of the Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil Falls and tumbles down nearly 200 feet into the rocky gorge below into a thundering cauldron of water and mist. Experiencing the raw power of Niagara Falls firsthand is something you'll never forget... and just what you'll do as you first view the falls from a panoramic spot high above... then don a hooded raincoat and board a private boat for an up-close – and very wet – encounter with this iconic "wonder of the natural world."

Traverse the Welland Canal

A marvel of engineering two centuries in the making....

Comprising eight locks that enable ship traffic to travel between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario by bypassing the Niagara River and Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal is a 200-year engineering marvel that actually represents four successive canals. Originally designed and built in the 1820s, a second canal replaced it in the late 1840s, and a third opened in 1887. The construction on the fourth and current Welland Canal – which your ship on "Cruising the Great Lakes" will traverse in about 11 hours, accompanied by an expert guide – began before World War I was not completed until 1932 and expanded some 40 years later.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Step back in time on michigan's mackinac island.

Vehicle-free Mackinac Island – off the Michigan coast in the Straits of Mackinac connecting Lakes Michigan and Huron – has been a popular retreat since 19th-century industrialists built imposing summer "cottages" here, and remains serenely lost in time. The only way to get around is by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage, as you make your way past impeccable Victorian mansions and out to the fringes of forest, marshes, beaches and 19th-century Fort Mackinac. The island is home to the palatial Grand Hotel, which lays claim to the longest porch in the world. Since 1887, the Grand has hosted many presidents, as well as the likes of Mark Twain and Thomas Edison (who first demonstrated his phonograph on the hotel's iconic porch).

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay for entry into Canada; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact the embassies or consulates of the United States and Canada to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Cruise Regulations

International Maritime Security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN:  If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

The Ponant Explorer-Class Ship is registered in France. If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

The Ponant Explorer-Class ship has a licensed and registered physician onboard for professional and emergency services, which are available at customary charges. The ship's small infirmary is designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents, and is not intended to or capable of providing on-going treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Canada. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be uneven, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Therefore, roads and walkways may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in in order to appreciate fully the sometimes challenging terrain.

Onboard ship, health and fitness devotees will find a spa and fitness center on Deck 7.

We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.  Guests must advise Tauck of any food allergies or special dietary needs at the time of booking.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Ocean Explorer ship

You can now ride a cruise ship on the Great Lakes from Toronto to Chicago

Latest Videos

Cruise ships are officially back on the Great Lakes and near Toronto after a two-year hiatus.

Similar to other Great Lakes cruise packages , Vantage Travel is offering a luxurious 14-day cruise from Toronto to Chicago, aka the Windy City.

Some of the perks of the cruise package includes tours of Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, rock-and-roll Cleveland and “Motor City” Detroit.

Toronto to Chicago cruise route. Photo Credit: Vantage Travel

From a starting point in Toronto the crusie departs to Niagara Falls to visit a local winery for wine tasting, as well as soak in dramatic views of the Horseshoe Falls.

The next few days are spent sightseeing in Cleveland and Detroit, where you can embark on a tour of the Ford Rouge Factory and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Next up is Georgian Bay and Manitoulin Island , the world's largest freshwater island and home of the Ojibwe tribe.

You will also have time to explore Sault Ste. Marie, and Mackinac Island, where motor vehicles have been banned for over 100 years.

The cruise concludes with an architectural boat tour of Chicago, the third largest city in the U.S.

It comes as no surprise that the price tag for this cruise package is quite hefty. Prices start from $8,699 which works out to about $621 per day.

All the dates for this year’s tour aboard the Ocean Explorer are sold out, however, two dates in 2023 are still available .

Last Discovered Continent

Last Discovered Continent

Tour operator.

It's easy to see the world's sights. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds, and generally have the same standard-issue vacation as everyone else. But that's not good enough for us, and it's not good enough for you. We believe that travel should be easy. It should be fun. It should be worth your time and the price you paid. It should re-energize and transform. And above all else, it should be beyond the ordinary. Because how you see the world matters.

In 1882, Herman Tauck arrived in New York City from Germany in search of the American dream. His determination and values were passed on to his son, Arthur Tauck, who would realize that dream. With ingenuity and an innovative spirit, Arthur started Tauck Motor Tours, a travel company that would give birth to a new industry. The first tour, through the back roads of New England, was created by this 27-year-old in 1925. It embodied the same successful formula used by Tauck today: do the right thing. Craft a life-enriching travel experience; provide it at a single all-inclusive price; ensure there is great value for money; and rely on recommendations of satisfied customers to build a following and grow the business.

Two elements that did change over the next 90+ years – and three generations of Taucks – were the scope of destinations served and the variety of modes of travel used. Today Tauck delivers life-enriching travel experiences to every corner of the globe, incorporating small cruise ships, premium riverboats, trains, helicopters and more. What started as a New England motor coach tour company has truly evolved into an extraordinary global travel company. The fourth generation of Taucks is now involved in the company. While remarkable in any business, this seamless continuity across generations speaks to shared vision and values.

Throughout its history, the concept of “family” at Tauck has gone far beyond those sharing the surname to include hundreds of valued employees, and hundreds of thousands of loyal guests. The story of Tauck is the story of a unique American family company celebrating a passion for travel – a story that will continue to inspire generations to come.

There's A Great Lakes Cruise From Chicago To Toronto & It Also Stops At These 2 US Cities

All aboard! 🚢

A lake-side view of Toronto. Right: Chicago with boats heading towards Lake Michigan.

A lake-side view of Toronto. Right: Chicago with boats heading towards Lake Michigan.

If you love to hang by the water during the summer, why not make your next vacation a cruise ?

Now that cruises have made their splash at Toronto's ports after a two-year hiatus, there are more trips that you can take, including one two-week trip that will take you from the Windy City and straight through to the 6ix (with of course a few stops along the way).

Vantage Deluxe World Travel has a Great Lakes cruise that disembarks from Chicago and sails across Lake Huron and Lake Michigan as it journeys to Toronto. But, depending on what travel date you pick, you can leave from Toronto to the Windy City, too.

After a day of eating deep-dish pizza and seeing all of the major sites in Chicago , this cruise makes its first stop on Mackinac Island, where you can walk throughout its "car-free" streets. The Ocean Explorer then sets sail for Sault Ste. Marie before it cruises through the Georgian Bay to Manitoulin Island.

The journey also stops off at Detroit and Cleveland, where art history buffs can check out the first Van Gogh painting to make it to the States and music lovers can jam at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Voyagers will, of course, make a stop to see Niagara Falls before heading right to Toronto.

While the whole trip is scheduled for 14 days, travellers do have the option to extend their vacay, which they can do either three days before in Chicago or three days after in Toronto (for an extra cost).

This trip does cost a pretty penny, though, as prices start at $8,699 for a two-person room. Solo travellers can expect to pay at least a grand more, and this is all in U.S. dollars too.

The Ocean Explorer does come packed with amenities though, like an onboard spa, and two hot tubs. There will also be some "curated" musical performances and cultural events, and alcoholic drinks like wine and beer are included at dinner.

Unfortunately, this Great Lakes Cruise is completely sold out for 2022, but there are two trips available for booking next year or even the year after that in 2024 .

Cruising The Great Lakes on Victory I from Chicago To Toronto

great lakes cruise from toronto to chicago

Guest Contributors John and Sandra Nowlan cruise the Great Lakes on Victory I, enthralled by the scenic stops along the way.

The bumper sticker read: “The Great Lakes – Unsalted and Shark-Free.” While it was an effective bumper sticker, the publisher could have added, “Wonderful Cruising.”

The Great Lakes contain fully a fifth of all the standing fresh water in the world. With 10,000 miles of shoreline, the five lakes dominate the geography, culture and history of central North America. The region has never had the profile of ocean or European river cruising…but it should.

Departing Chicago

Chicago, with its grand buildings, many museums and outstanding cuisine was an ideal city from which to begin our cruise to the Great Lakes on Victory I to Toronto.

Our ship was Victory I, a comfortable 200-passenger vessel built in 2001 and owned by Victory Cruise Lines, recently acquired by the American Queen Steamboat Company. Its registered tonnage is just 5,000 and it’s 300 feet long. Its unusual bow is vertical rather than slanted.

Finding Victory I in Chicago was a challenge.  We gave our taxi driver, a 30-year veteran, a street address and told him it was at the “Chicago Dock”. “Never heard of it”, he replied. After consulting his GPS and with a long ride south, almost to the Indiana border, the handsome ship was finally spotted in a gritty, very unattractive industrial area. Chicago, if it wants to be a major cruise player, has to find a better port facility closer to downtown.

Boarding Victory I

Once aboard the Victory I, the atmosphere improved rapidly. A welcome drink and smiling crew members made registration simple and we were escorted to our cabin. It was small with muted, attractive colours but cleverly laid out with a surprising amount of storage space. Two large picture windows offered great views. The bathroom was tiny but quite functional with luxury touches like L’Occitane toiletries.

Before sailing, a quick tour of Victory I showed off its passenger-friendly attributes. On Deck 2, a comfortable Compass Lounge had enough room for all passengers and became the center for entertainment and lectures. A small library on either side of the lounge led to the “Tavern” with its bar and complimentary beer, wine, spirits and cocktails.

Complimentary wine was also available with meals in the two dining areas, the large Coastal Dining Room on Deck 1 and the more intimate one, The Grill, with excellent views, at the rear of Deck 4.

All meals were surprisingly good with our German chef and his team producing imaginative dishes like Beef Steak Tartar, Colcannon Soup, Venison Tourtiere and Panko Crusted Atlantic Cod. Fish, mostly pre-frozen, was of high quality with very fresh Ontario trout a highlight one evening. Service from the well-trained Indonesian, Filipino and Indian waiters was very professional.

While food, service and comfort were excellent, it’s the Great Lakes itinerary that really shone. With outstanding guides, we visited both small, intimate communities and major North American cities.

Sailing the Great Lakes on Victory I

Our first stop was new to most of the ship’s American, Canadian and Australian guests. On the east side of Lake Michigan, Muskegon (population 38,000) is the largest city. It boasts two fascinating World War II vessels that are now floating museums. The US Silversides was the most decorated surviving submarine from the war. Visitors can walk through the claustrophobic interior and see the small galley and the crew’s bunk beds adjacent to the torpedo tubes.

USS Silversides

Nearby, visitors can also enjoy a tour through the cavernous interior and huge front unloading ramp of USS LST 393, one of only two remaining tank landing crafts that were used to bring Sherman tanks and troops to the shores of Normandy 75 years ago during D-Day. More than a thousand of these versatile crafts, each more than 300 feet long, were built for use in World War II.

Visiting the Great Lakes On Victory I - One of two remaining tank landing ships from WWII

In the afternoon, another complimentary tour took us to the charming town of Holland, Michigan.  As expected, the community was filled with tulips (luckily, it was tulip season) but the most interesting sight was the only authentic Dutch windmill in the U.S. The De Zwaan windmill was built in the Netherlands in 1761, then moved piece by piece to Holland, Michigan in 1964. Visitors can take a tour inside this working wind machine.

On the Great Lakes on Victory I - Visiting Holland Michigan

After a relaxing day on Lake Michigan (including elegant Afternoon Tea) we arrived at Mackinac Island , a unique U.S. destination where cars have been banned since 1898.  All transportation is by bicycle or horse-drawn carriages, through the village with its 17 fudge shops and on to the historic Grand Hotel (built in 1887) with its 397 rooms and world’s longest porch.

On the Great Lakes on Victory I - Victory I at car-free Mackinac Island

Victory Cruise Lines reserved a section of the Hotel’s huge restaurant for the extravagant Grand Luncheon Buffet.

Viennese afternoon tea

Our first Canadian destination was Little Current, Ontario, a village on Manitoulin, the world’s largest freshwater island. The island is home to the Ojibwe People, part of the largest First Nation population in North America. All guests were invited to the nearby cultural center for a welcoming smudging ceremony and a Pow Wow, a lively exhibit of native drumming, singing and dancing.

After we re-boarded Victory I, we went through the Little Current Swing Bridge dating from 1913 (the only bridge to the island) and past the Strawberry Island Lighthouse in Georgian Bay. Built in 1881, it’s one of the most photographed in North America.

Winding down from our cruise on the Great Lakes on Victory I

After visiting small, rural communities it was fascinating to dock beside the downtowns of two major US cities, Detroit and Cleveland. It was an easy walk from the ship to the central cores. Both offer a multitude of tourist attractions so, with just a day to spend there, our tour organizers chose well.

In Detroit, the highlight was the Henry Ford Museum, second only to the Smithsonian in Washington for cultural significance. Among the exhibits in its huge, one-level gallery are the limousine that carried President Kennedy on that fateful 1963 day in Dallas, the Alabama bus in which Rosa Parks defied seat segregation laws and the actual chair from the Ford Theatre occupied by President Lincoln when he was shot in 1865.

The 1963 car in which President Kennedy was shot

Of course, there are several exhibits showing early airplanes and locomotives along with Model A and Model T Fords when Henry Ford pioneered vehicle assembly lines.

In Cleveland, Victory I guests were taken on an extensive Trolley Tour of the impressive city including a drive through the 170-acre medical campus of the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic and a stop at the outstanding Cleveland Museum of Art. But next door to the ship was an architectural masterpiece, the I.M. Pei-designed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, paying homage to the greats of rock music history, from Buddy Holly to Elvis and the Beatles to the Rolling Stones and Prince. Great fun for music nostalgia fans.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame designed by I.M. Pei

Wet fun and fine wine were in store for our final day of the cruise as Victory I entered the eight locks of the Welland Canal, bypassing Niagara Falls and lowering ships 326 feet between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. All guests were given a picturesque bus ride along the Niagara Parkway and then invited aboard one of the Hornblower Niagara Cruise ships. Outfitted with red ponchos, guests sailed past the American Falls to the base of the Horseshoe Falls where wind, spray and towering cascades of water made an unforgettable impression.

Niagara Falls: Wet...and loving it

Fully dried, we boarded our buses to Chateau des Charmes, one of the many fine wineries in the Niagara region where we enjoyed lunch and samples of excellent Ontario vintages. We then had free time in Niagara-on-the Lake, a charming community renowned as the home of the Shaw Summer Festival.

The next morning we woke up in Toronto in an industrial part of Lake Ontario but facing the extraordinary skyline of Ontario’s capital. It was certainly a prettier sight than the depressing view from the Chicago cruise port. The good news is that Victory Cruise Lines has promised that future Great Lakes sailings between Chicago and Toronto will use a much more convenient port, close to downtown Chicago. An enhanced start for a wonderful cruise experience.

Disclosure: The Nowlans sailed on the Great Lakes on Victory I as guests of Victory Cruise Lines but any opinions expressed in this post are their own.
