The Blue Walk

Our Art Vacations

Mary Beth Shaw with illustration from Greece art vacation workshop

Jeannette and Suzy set a new high standard of travel. I joined an ArtWalk Greece with 3 girlfriends. We left Greece with a whole new appreciation of seeing the world by traveling “at the speed of you.” They are fabulous tour leaders. They have a depth of knowledge of the local towns and sites that I have never before experienced. We always felt so well taken care of. We did a lot of walking and art-making. I am looking forward to another Blue Walk in the future!

Travel Journal Art Vacations

Create an experience to remember.

You’ve daydreamed of this: a vacation with time each day to simply create. The destinations are beautiful. The accommodations are welcoming. All the details are taken care of. In the company of like-minded travelers you savor the wonder of the present moment. And you capture it all through your art.

Create as You Travel

Our Art Walk art vacations are the perfect tours for artists of all levels. Talented and engaging teaching artists offer daily classes inspired by stunning locations. Equal parts journey and learning, our art vacations are based on a travel journal format. Art classes are mostly on site. Some programs have “studio” time at our hotels. Space is almost always limited, so you will learn to work with what is available, being able to create wherever and however you may find yourself. Sketchbook, watercolor, collage, and multimedia workshops are all represented in our schedule.

Everyone is Welcome

Join us. Solo travelers love the easy camaraderie our tours provide. First time European travelers and budding artists love the safe, supportive, and welcoming atmosphere. The main requirements are a desire for adventure and gratitude for the opportunity to pursue it.

Travel at the speed of you.

Stretch your legs and expand your experience.

Find a community. Receive and share inspiration.

Return home renewed, accomplished, and feeling better than ever.

Keeping an illustrated travel journal enhances your trip and opens your mind. Everything around me is fresh and beautiful because I’m drawing it, seeing it truly for the first time.

Once you return from your trip, your mind remains full of wonder. A quick flip through your journal’s pages keeps those memories alive.

4 Tour Guide Training Programs to Improve Your Skills

tour guide training

Being a successful tour guide doesn’t happen overnight. You can’t just snap your fingers and wake up as Kelsey Tonner. If you want to differentiate your tour business from others, double your tips, and become a tour director one day, you have to improve your tour guide skills.

Of course, that might happen naturally as you gain experience over time — especially if you do a self-evaluation at the end of every tour. But one of the best and fastest ways to fine-tune your skills is to take a few tour guide training courses.

By learning directly from the experts, you can get insider tips on real-life scenarios so that you know how to lead tours like a pro, which will help you feel more competent and confident as a tour guide. Not to mention, spruce up your LinkedIn profile with a snazzy tour guide certification to add credibility to your skillset.

So, where can you get started? We break down the top 4 tour guide training programs in the industry right now. Specifically, those that offer online courses, so that you can level up your tour guide skills in your pajamas during this unsolicited downtime.

(P.S. if you are a tour operator reading this, you can better support your tour guides by offering intensive, in-house tour guide training and encouraging professional development with the following courses below)

Top tour guide training courses

1. TripSchool

If Shane Whaley from Tourpreneur gives something his stamp of approval, you know it has to be good. After taking one of the TripSchool workshops, Shane shared that the learning experience was intense , brutally honest , no sugar coating , and well worth the time and money . (You can see the full review in the Tourpreneur Approved Directory ).

In other words, TripSchool isn’t kidding around. Combining over 40 years of experience in the industry, the founders, Mitch Bach and Alan Armijo, are passionate about helping tour guides grow their skills based on everything they’ve learned first-hand. In fact, they’re often described as the Dynamic Duo by their long list of graduates.

With TripSchool, you can choose your own training adventure. Between live, interactive workshops, self-paced online courses, and in-person classes, there’s an option for almost any learning style. TripSchool also has a library of tour guide handbooks , written by tour guides, that provide insight on how to lead tours in the most in-demand tourist hot spots of the United States.

Tour Director and Guide Certification by TripSchool

For new tour guides, you might want to start with the Tour Director & Guide Certification . In this course, you’ll learn how to improve your tour guide skills by completing a three-step process:

  • Online course: 10 days of covering essential terminology and concepts behind tour directing
  • Boot camp: 6 days of applying what you learned to the field with a small class size
  • Work and mentorship: TripSchool won’t leave you hanging. After completing the course, you’ll get access to continued education and graduate support to help you succeed in your career

That’s not all, TripSchool also offers a Getting Hired Series, with real critiques from tour operators on what they look for in a resume and interview, as well as short destination training sessions (2-3 hours of jam-packed tips). I can go on and on; you’ll just have to see yourself by checking out the Online Tourism Training Library .

2. International Tour Management Institute

Around since 1976, the International Tour Management Institu t e (ITMI) is one of the longest-running tour training programs in the industry. Over 8,000 tour guides and travel leaders have graduated from ITMI, who, as alumni, enjoy exclusive access to an online community of tour professionals, the industry’s largest database of tour resources, and the annual ITMI Symposium — a networking and educational event.

Like the TripSchool, ITMI’s Tour Certification Program breaks up the curriculum into three sections over the course of two months:

8-week tour leadership training experience by International Management Institute

  • Tour Leading Fundamentals: learn all about the key concepts and skills required in the field (3 weeks of online classes and assignments)
  • Learning Lab: spend a full week with your classmates in-destination, and apply what you learned to practical, real-life scenarios (8-day in-person intensive training)
  • Career Launchpad: get the support you need with a career action plan and online coaching (3 weeks of one-on-one sessions)

ITMI values the entire program at over $14,000, but tuition is less than half of that. If you’re unsure about investing that much money, think of it like a college degree. An ITMI certificate is recognized internationally, and they partner with over 1,000 tour companies worldwide, so they can help jumpstart your career with suitable job opportunities.

Don’t wait to apply for admission . ITMI only takes 175 students into the certification program. Or check out what other courses they offer, like the Student Tour or National Parks Master Class. (P.S. if you’re a tour operator, you can work with ITMI to design a customized training program for your tour guides).

3. International Guide Academy

Like ITMI, the International Guide Academy (IGA) has been around for a long time. First established in 1973, IGA has 47 years of experience training tour guides and directors in four continents, including places like Australia, Hong Kong, and even at sea on a cruise ship.

IGA offers both a tour director and tour guide course, which you can take back to back and receive a tuition discount. It’s important to note that tour guides and tour directors require different knowledge and training, so being able to get both certifications at a lower cost is a double whammy.

Tour Guide 7-day class by International Guide Academy

In just seven days, the Tour Guide Class goes over everything you need to know, including travel industry terminology, conduct and ethics, commentary skills, your role as a local expert , and so much more. As a graduate, you also receive lifetime job placement assistance and access to a detailed list of 200+ tour operators and their contact information.

With instructors from all over the world and different cultural backgrounds, IGA is looking to expand its number of international locations where you can do your training. But for now, they’re holding the tour guide programs entirely online, so be sure to check their website for upcoming class dates.

4. EastguidesWest

Accredited by  ILM  — Institute of Leadership & Management —  EastguidesWest  offers coaching for tour leaders worldwide, especially remote and emerging destinations. Founded by two tour directors who are both ITMI-certified, Sjannie Hulsman-Louwers and Barnaby Davies strive to make tourism education more accessible to all by passing on their knowledge and expertise online and on-site.

While they invested thousands in their own tourism training, they generously share their insights and how-to at a fraction of the cost in as little as three days. With a primary focus on Western tourism expectations and sustainability, EastguidesWest’s  field training  covers  cultural sensitivity , body language and public speaking, pricing with a business mindset, personalized guest attention, and so much more.

EastguidesWest online tour guide training programs

Now, don’t worry if you can’t travel for training. EastguidesWest also has budget-friendly  online tour guide courses  you can work through on your own time, which are currently on sale due to COVID-19. There are twelve courses in total (with more to come), so that’s twelve certifications to spice up your resume and help you land a job with a tour operator.

Speaking of, EastguidesWest connects local tour guides to Western tour operators through an ever-growing global network of tourism professionals. Not to mention, they’ve recently launched a program to help tour guides in need where tour guides can get support from donations. So if you could use some assistance paying for basic necessities right now, send in your tour guide crisis application form.

Other fantastic courses for tour guides

Female getting tour guide certification online in the back of camper van

We already know that tour guides wear many hats. They must know how to make a commentary in tour guiding , handle large groups, and have exceptional time management and navigational abilities. But what really makes a tour guide stand out to both tour operators and their guests? Being prepared for almost anything that comes your way with a diverse skillset.

So, it’s good to take courses outside of guiding to become a more well-rounded and successful tour guide. Here are a few ideas to start you off:

  • Improvisation: tour guides have to be on their toes from check-in to check-out. Learn how to keep the funny tour guide jokes going in-between your scripted bits by taking on online class with Second City Works — the largest school of improvisation and sketch comedy in the world.
  • Public speaking: most of the above tour guide courses will go over effective techniques here, but if you want to fine-tune your public speaking skills to make the tour less of a presentation and more of a conversation, consider taking this LinkedIn course .
  • Marketing: many tour operators have enough on their plate already, and could always use some marketing help. Show how invaluable you can be to the operation’s success by helping to grow its online presence. The Tourism Tribe offers a bunch of affordable digital marketing courses for the tourism industry, including Blogging for Tourism , Facebook Ads 101 , and a short Instagram workshop .
  • Videography: tour operators love getting their hands on content to attract and engage social media followers. Help them out by getting incredible footage of their tours (ones you aren’t leading). Here’s an excellent cinematography course on SkillShare with a focus on travel filmmaking.

Final thoughts

Don’t forget to check out if there are any certification programs offered in your country to improve your tour guide skills. And if you are looking to become an adventure guide, you’ll want to look for specific courses and licenses in your niche. Best of luck in your career as a tour guide!

Workshops and Fam Trips: key features in promoting MICE destinations

Tourism is among the most important economic drivers in many world regions, and Mallorca is no exception. With its natural beauty, rich culture and wide range of services, the island has become an attractive destination for travellers from all over the world.

In this context, the fifth edition of the  MallorcaLeads International Workshop, sponsored primarily by the Calvià Town Hall and Funddació Calvià 2004 , stands out as a  crucial event for the promotion of the destination and strengthening of the tourism sector in Mallorca .

workshop tourist

What is a Tourism Workshop?

Tourism workshops are events that put meeting planners, tour operators, tour wholesalers and travel organisers into contact with  tourism service providers . The aim is to establish strong business relationships, promote new destinations and products, and foster collaboration in the travel and events industry.

workshop tourist

A platform for networking

Tourism workshops are more than trade fairs; they are professional meetings designed to connect key players in the sector. At tourism workshops, event organisers can meet directly with travel suppliers and those responsible for event venues on the island. Travel organisers can discover new opportunities and experiences to offer their customers, and this often includes FAM trips (familiarisation trips) and press trips (press trips) to get to know the destinations thoroughly.

What is a workshop event, why is a workshop event valuable, 19 workshop event ideas, key takeaways: master the art of workshop events, 19 high-impact workshop event ideas.

Avatar

Workshops have long been a great way to communicate ideas, bring people together, or get closer to accomplishing business goals. But as events have moved online, the status quo doesn’t work anymore.

After too many Zoom calls and webinars, we’re tired. We need something new. So we started digging into how we could make virtual or hybrid workshop ideas more engaging and productive. What surprised us was that, even though the human connection might feel different online (or just awkward at times), there are many benefits to virtual workshops.

So whether you’re preparing for in-person workshops again or if you plan on running virtual breakout sessions this year, we’ve put this list of workshop ideas together to inspire your next event.

A workshop — often used in B2B event marketing   — is an event that gives attendees hands-on experience with the subject matter. Workshop topics or themes are often specific to a certain industry or niche. Attendees participate in workshops to acquire a new skill or specialized knowledge that they can apply to their day-to-day life or profession.

Workshop events are valuable because they enable attendees to learn new skills and work toward their goals. This can include certification courses or unique networking opportunities. Workshops also provide opportunities to break up larger events — virtual or in-person — into smaller sessions with more hands-on and interactive activities.

It can be overwhelming to start planning an engaging workshop from scratch. After you’ve identified the goals and desired outcomes for your workshop, read this list of ideas to inspire your next event.

1. Get Personal

Nike has gone all-in by offering personalized experiences and workshops to its large fanbase. After downloading the Nike app, fans don’t only have access to personalized promotions or new products. They also receive personalized invites to upcoming events and workshops. Nike’s workshops are both online and in-person, depending on the purpose of the workshop.

For one virtual event, Nike created personalized welcome pages for its attendees with tailored messaging from keynote speaker and tennis pro Serena Williams.

For one of its biggest events of the year, Air Max Day 2021 , Nike hosts an immersive virtual experience with keynote speakers, musical performances, product drops, and creative workshops. Attendees will get the opportunity to learn from Nike collaborators and designers in smaller groups even though the event is global and all-virtual.

2. Blend the Physical and Virtual

Virtual reality (VR) used to be an expensive idea for workshops, but over the years the sticker price has gone down. For marketing teams using account-based marketing , sending a VR set to a list of top accounts could be a great way to impress and interact virtually with key decision-makers.

VR still might be slightly obscure, but it won’t be that way forever. About 20% of Facebook’s employees now work on VR and AR technology. The social media company plans on greatly accelerating the technology over the next few years.

The use cases for VR are vast and vary greatly across industries. For B2B companies working across manufacturing, energy, or complex fields, the technology could be used for improving training workshops. VR will help workshop organizers train attendees in a safer environment while lowering costs.

3. Teach By Doing

Facebook Blueprint Live Workshop Example Workshop Ideas

The best way to learn new skills is often by doing them. At Facebook Blueprint Live workshops , Facebook leaders teach agency leaders how to best leverage Facebook for their clients. Together, they engage in interactive experiences and build media plans for theoretical clients. There is no sitting back in these invite-only, one-day workshops. Participants are expected to collaborate and apply their learning in real-time.

4. Leverage Social Media

If your workshop is designed for marketing purposes on some level, remember to tie it together with your other channels. Social media skills are extremely helpful when it comes to promoting your workshop, but they also are beneficial for creating engagement and participation opportunities during the workshop.

Add interactivity to the workshop by enabling Live Q&A on your streaming platform, offering rewards and incentives for sharing content or hashtags, polling your audience, or more.

5. Build Connections

In a similar fashion to networking, B2B businesses can provide clients with direct access to new leads or prospects by bringing together individuals in their network. Base your workshop on a common interest they share and coordinate scheduling so that businesses and potential customers have plenty of time to meet.

The premise behind Wine Pleasures: Buyer Meets Cellar  is to bring together boutique wine producers and serious wine importers. To facilitate personal discussions, the organizers behind Buyer Meets Cellar set up one-on-one business meetings between attendees according to mutual interests. Post-workshop networking events serve as an additional opportunity for attendees to expand their networks within the industry.

6. Add to Your Conference

If you’re hosting a conference or summit, consider implementing a few workshops into your schedule. Workshops serve to fill slow event times with high-value content, and as an event type, these are completely flexible to any space. This strategy works as part of a broader multi-touch event marketing plan or the idea that a variation of event types can be strategically placed throughout the multi-touch funnel for each one to be most effective.

The Adobe Max Conference for instance continuously hosts a “Community Pavilion” outside their main event. This space showcased a variety of vendors, interactive technology booths, and creative workshops for attendees to choose from.

7. Make Networking Natural

Using a dedicated networking platform or  event app , workshop attendees can upload their business headshots, bios, and interests into a LinkedIn-esque website. From there, participants can easily message and interact with each other before and after the event. Bringing together like-minded people is a great goal, but helping them stay in touch after the workshop ends is an even more challenging task.

Nanotexnology 2019’s B2B Matchmaking Event lets attendees upload their cooperation profiles. Through their system, users can request meetings and finalize agendas with help from event coordinators. Because their workshop participants are located all over the world, a dedicated communication tool helps overcome the barrier of costly international cell phone plans.

8. Champion Collaboration

People are tired of online meetings where the conversation is dominated by one or two people. Project development is optimized when multiple participants chime in. The challenge is that not everyone can contribute at once — especially using a video conferencing tool.

One solution is to use sticky notes. This is common practice in traditional workshops, but can also be applied virtually. Tools like Miro enable participants to create, organize, store, and export sticky notes created in a workshop.

If you’re running internal workshops to build and develop projects, sticky notes are great because they add an asynchronous element to the meeting. Participants can add notes before or after the workshop to optimize the development process. Digital product agency Crema uses sticky notes to collaborate on projects , such as its webinar series, “Collaboration after COVID-19.”

9. Provide One-of-a-Kind Resources

One of the most important tools for any business regardless of their niche is real-world data and case studies. This information is often difficult to obtain. Hosting a workshop that offers these materials plus expert analysis on the given topics creates a truly unique experience for attendees and can easily be added to any of your corporate event ideas .

SmartCities’s Clean Air Through IoT Networks Workshop is dedicated to improving air quality with statistical data and examples of success stories they’ve personally witnessed. Part informational meeting, part brainstorm session, this workshop is a great example of just how important events of this kind can be.

10. Explore New Technologies

Not only is new technology incredibly interesting, but it’s also a lot of fun to use. Give workshop attendees firsthand experience with gadgets and software not yet on the market or newly launched. Once they’ve had a chance to experience it for themselves you can use the workshop to further explain how these tools can be integrated with their business practices shortly.

KneeVR’s Workshop on Virtual Reality in Healthcare helps professionals understand that VR is not just for gamers. Their workshop gives attendees a glimpse into the many practical uses for VR through speakers, inspiring cases, and live demos. This is just another example of how VR can be used in live events .

11. Foster Partnerships

Partnerships are a popular way to increase reach and revenue for any business type. At partnership workshops, attendees with similar interests and business goals have an opportunity to meet through these industry-specific events. Knowing who to invite will largely depend on your larger business goals. For instance, if you’re targeting specific accounts in a specific industry through an  account-based event marketing strategy, you may want to bring in a specific partner. As you’ll see in this next example, there are lots of ways to facilitate interactions with this goal in mind.

The Euregional B2B Brokerage Workshop uses speed dating to help entrepreneurs, SMEs, and institutions spark potential relationships. They also offer matchmaking services in the form of small-group workshops.

12. Get Educational

Your product or service can be the main theme for a series of workshop events. If your business is constantly updating or improving its offers, hosting educational workshops helps keep users engaged for the long term. Bonus points if you offer insider tips that will only be shared during the sessions.

13. Answer Burning Questions

No matter what profession you choose, they probably have a set of questions around their most challenging stumbling blocks that require advanced training. Workshops are a great way to give them the answers they so desire. ImpactHub’s Sales Workshop keeps this fact in mind as they walk participants through their biggest pain points and present a variety of solutions, tools, and tips. They even invite a panel of experts to weigh in on the issues.

ImpactHub’s Sales Workshop - Workshop Event Ideas

14. Offer Mini-Workshop Sprints

Sometimes a topic will be important enough to do a workshop on, but so specific that it doesn’t fit into the standard 1 hour to 90 minute session time we’re all so accustomed to. The good news is you can offer a series of niche interest workshops in 20-30 minutes sprints in a single day. Covering a lot of topics in a short amount of time will be extra appealing to attendees who can cherry-pick the lessons most pertinent to them.

15. Make It Quirky

B2B workshops don’t have to be all business, all the time. Whether you choose a playful twist on a well-known topic or bring a fresh perspective to an old issue, there are no limits to how creative you can get with your workshop topics. For creativity exercises and other prompts, Dave Birss has developed plenty of resources to get you started.

16. Target the Right Prospects

Instead of telling your prospects how much you know about a topic, you can show them through a workshop. If you choose a specific need of theirs to address and combine that with an impactful set of tools, you’ll have a greater chance of converting them later on.

NASSCOM’s Deep Insights Workshop is mostly interested in improving brand awareness among top-of-funnel clients like entrepreneurs with a certain level of funding. They help answer the top two questions every customer in this category has at this stage of growth. This approach helps NASSCOM build lifelong relationships through their workshops.

17. Provide a Free Evaluation

Sometimes it’s hard to determine the success of a business when you’re working inside of it. Businesses with lots of clients in a particular niche have a broader view of the industry. Based on observations from real customers over time, you may have a better idea of a company’s relative health than even they do.

The Place Berlin’s B2B Prospection Workshop offers a free diagnostic of each participant’s lead generation process and gives specific advice on how to make improvements. Attendees also enjoy lectures on broader topics so that they can get both big-picture knowledge and personal recommendations from the same event.

18. Think Big … and Small

Regardless of your current audience reach, workshops are an opportunity to introduce your brand to international or local markets. Whether you’re a small-town company spreading its wings to other countries, or a globally recognized business reconnecting with its roots, there are lots of ways to target specific communities through workshops.

Hoteliers European Marketplace (HEM) 2019 caters to a niche audience: hoteliers in Europe. And although their name might imply they stick to a single region of the globe, the one-day B2B workshop invites international wholesalers, tour operators, and online intermediaries. In doing so they are helping their European clients reach newer markets and form partnerships they might not have otherwise had access to.

HEM 2019 - Workshop Event Ideas

19. Use the Best Tools

If there’s one thing we know by now, it’s that online versions of live events have the potential to be very successful. They’re highly measurable: you can track the number of views, participants, and CTAs. They are also very accessible so audiences don’t have to travel to join in on the fun.

Now that virtual events, breakout sessions, and workshops have become normal, you need to be using the tools that can help you give the best experience to your participants.

Tools like Zoom, Miro, and Dropbox Paper are great for collaboration. If your workshops are part of a larger event, you’ll also want a modern end-to-end event success platform that can support in-person, virtual, or hybrid events.

Here are some big ideas to keep in mind when planning your next business workshop:

  • Make workshops fun by choosing cool themes and cutting-edge tools and tips.
  • Provide a high-value experience with useful extras and a curated guest list.
  • Foster relationships between participants who can benefit from doing business with each other.

No matter what your event strategy   is, focus on helping your attendees accomplish their goals and you can’t go wrong.

New to workshopping start here.

How do you facilitate a workshop like a boss when you've never run one before? Here are five short, east-to-learn activities that are common building blocks of popular workshops.

Nervous about running your first workshop? We get it. It's a high-stakes situation and you want to seem confident and practiced. So how do you facilitate a workshop like a boss when you've never run one before? Well, you don't.

Instead of jumping straight in at the deep end, try out individual workshop activities on your own. Take your time to understand the steps, get a feel for what situations they work in, and enjoy yourself without anyone judging you if things go wrong.

Here are five short activities, all common building blocks of popular workshops , that you'll immediately benefit from learning:

  • 1. Do you want a Career in UX?
  •  Learn the Principles of UX Design
  • Master a UX Design Tool ‍

How Might We…

When to use: When you are overwhelmed with obstacles

Outcome: All obstacles reframed into opportunities, 1-3 of them highlighted to focus on

What you need: a bunch of post-its, marker, second marker or voting dots

Time: 30 mins

1. Set a timer for 10 mins. Write down the problems and obstacles that come to mind, each on a separate post-it note.

2. Set another timer for 10 mins. Now grab a post-it, take the first problem and reframe it so it’s a question that starts with “How Might We” (HMW for short). For instance, if your problem was “Low visitor numbers”, your HMW reframe will be: “HMW increase visitor numbers?”

3. Repeat until you get to the last one.

4. Now set a timer for 5 mins. Skim through your HMW notes and group them by theme. e.g. site visits, newsletter signup, refunds. Go quick and dirty. You’ll see which areas have the most challenges to solve.

5. Set another timer for 5 mins. You’re going to vote on the biggest pain points; no more than 3. Place a dot vote next to the chosen HMW questions (or draw a dot with the 2nd marker). You can use more than one vote for the same question!

6. Peel off the post-its with the votes and you’ve got your focus points.

Quite a big shift in thinking, isn’t it? You can immediately start coming up with potential solutions. There’s gonna be a lot of them! If only we had a way to prioritise them…

Impact / effort matrix

When to use: When you need to prioritise

Outcome: A weighted and prioritised grid of the challenges you’re facing, showing which ones to focus on and which ones to ditch

What you need: post-its, marker, a sheet of paper or a whiteboard

Time: 15 minutes

1. Draw a 2x2 grid. The X axis is impact; the Y axis is effort.

workshop tourist

2. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Write down your items to prioritise on individual post-its. These could be DIY tasks, Q4 priorities, or the potential solutions from the HMW activity above.

3. Set a timer for 10 minutes. Now take the post-its one by one and stick them on the impact/effort matrix. Where you’re going to stick them depends on two things: how hard it is to do them (effort), and how much you’d gain if they were done (impact). You don’t need to get clinical: broad strokes will do.

workshop tourist

4. Voting is probably not even going to be necessary as the matrix speaks for itself. We like to assign each quadrant a role - they make it pretty obvious what to focus on and what to avoid like the plague.

workshop tourist

Now get cracking on those quick wins and get a few tasks out of the way.

Join Facilitator Club and discover the support and resources you need to take your facilitation skills to the next level!

Crazy 8's.

When to use: When you're out of creative juice. Your ideas feel old and boring.

Outcome: 8 whacky, off the wall ideas

What you need: A4 sheet of paper, marker

Time: 8 minutes (yes, really)

1. Think about the idea that you need to jazz up. Is it some stale marketing copy? A bad piece of design? Or a boring event plan?

2. Fold an A4 piece of paper into half, then half again, and (you guessed it) half again. You should have 8 rectangular sections.

3. Set a timer for one minute. In that minute, draw or write a crazy variation of your boring idea into square 1. Go nuts and don't limit yourself: the point here is to break through your creative barrier.

4. When the minute is up, start the timer for another minute and move on to square 2. Develop your new idea further - and if you can’t, just come up with a new one.

5. Repeat until you’ve filled all 8 squares.

You might be able to use one of these ideas, but it’s also possible that they’re just too "out there". But after this exercise you'll be in a more creative frame of mind. You can dig into what does and doesn't work about the crazy ideas, and that'll give you a direction to move in.

User journey map.

When to use: When work becomes abstract or confusing. It's a sign you've lost sight of the actual, real-life journey that your audience is taking

Outcome: A simple, visual, step-by-step map of the user journey

What you need : A4 sheet of paper, marker

Time: 20 minutes

1. Rotate your sheet to a horizontal position. Create 5 headings across the width, as if you were making columns: Actors | Discover | Learn | Use | Goal

2. Think about who your actors are. Is it the customer? Is it the sales department? You might have more than one actor and more than one journey.

3. Now pin down the end goal. What is it you want them to achieve? A sale? A newsletter subscription?

4. What's the immediate step that leads them to the goal? And what's the step before THAT? Where do they need to discover your product in order for all that to happen? Work your way back through the various phases. Adjust / omit them as needed.

It won’t be a work of art, but it’s still worth sticking above your desk. It WILL pull you back to reality when work starts to feel abstract again.

Lightning demos

When to use: When you're stuck for inspiration or something feels unsolvable

Outcome: 1-3 inspiring ideas of how others solved a similar challenge

What you need: smartphone or computer with Internet connection, post-its, marker

Time: 30 minutes

1. Think about what you're trying to solve. How have others solved a similar problem? You might have seen a TV ad, listened to a talk or used a product that got it right.

2. Look up those companies and products, or try to find new ones. They don’t have to be from your own industry and 2-3 examples will suffice.

3. Note down the big idea that makes each solution work and try to find the how or why. We've got a handy template for you:

workshop tourist

4. Take a couple of screenshots or photos that show the solution in action.

Normally you'd demo these to your team so they can… get inspired (*cough* steal it *cough*) but you don't have to do that. Demoing to yourself is enough to find the strong ideas and get the creative juices flowing. (You thief.)

There you have it: five brilliant activities to build your workshopping muscle while solving problems. Once you've got the hang of them, it’s time to capitalise on your unfair advantage.

A meeting has tanked? Swoop in and save the day with a “How might we…” activity. Running a prioritisation session? Give the effort / impact matrix a spin. This way you'll be preparing the ground for your first full-blown workshop while looking like an absolute badass.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

By Miami Law Staff Report 04-11-2024

Professor Kele Stewart , co-director of the Children and Youth Law Clinic , received a $5,000 grant from Miami Law to host a convening on April 19 th to explore the frameworks and strategies for abolition of the child welfare system, and concretely discuss alternative legal, policy and social infrastructure needed for families to thrive in a world without the family policing system. The event will be held at the Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the School of Law.

Stewart has devoted her career to improving the lives of children. At the clinic, she supervises students who handle cases involving abused, abandoned, and neglected children. Targeted Violence, Terrorism Prevention Focus of CP3, HBCU Visit

The Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3) sponsored a workshop on March 5 at Southern University and A&M College (SUBR) in Baton Rouge, La., addressing targeted violence and terrorism prevention (TVTP). Participation was part of its ongoing effort to encourage historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to engage in violence prevention work. The program included information on the university’s fiscal year 2022 TVTP Grant Program , along with a presentation by CP3 Regional Prevention Coordinator Emery Nauden, and information about the TVTP Grant Program  shared virtually by Grants Manager Jerhvon Pearman.

Southern University and A&M College is a publicly funded, historically Black, land-grant university that received a TVTP Grant from CP3 in fiscal year 2022. The grant administrators are using the funding to:

  • Create a TVTP team to develop a prevention framework;
  • Conduct training for campus police and essential organizations on pre-incident indicators, and the process of radicalization to targeted violence and terrorism;
  • Conduct training for students to increase knowledge of pre-incident indicators and radicalization to violence.

HBCUs have been the victims of targeted violence over the past few years, including several bomb scares in January and February 2022 that led to evacuations, class cancellations, and police investigations. SUBR was one of the schools affected. Following the incidents, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas issued a statement in August 2022 emphasizing the Department’s commitment to HBCUs, community safety, and its partnership-based approach to campus security.
