Why you Should Store Genotropin (Somatropin) in the Fridge

Growth hormone therapy is the most common treatment for growth hormone deficiency in children and adults. While there are different hGH analogs , Genotropin (somatropin) is one of the most prescribed in the United States .

Once your doctor prescribes you or your child with Genotropin growth hormone injections, the pharmacist will deliver Genotropin cartridges for compatible reusable or disposable subcutaneous injection devices.

But Genotropin is a temperature-sensitive biological product that requires specific storage conditions. Therefore, knowing how to store Genotropin at home correctly is critical for a successful therapy . 

So, let’s focus on that point for now and make sure you’re all mastering your new drug’s storage instructions!

What is Genotropin?

Genotropin is a human growth hormone (HGH) analog (recombinant human growth hormone or biosynthetic human growth hormone). It's a manufactured copy of our natural growth hormone called somatotropin and produced in the pituitary glands. 

Genotropin's active ingredient is Somatropin. It’s been on the market for over 35 years and is officially FDA-approved medication for the treatment of various growth disorders in both children and adults, including: 

• Growth hormone deficiency
• Prader-Willi syndrome
• Idiopathic short stature
• Turner syndrome
• Short stature for age
• Noonan syndrome

Genotropin (somatropin) is self-administered by the patient (or the parents in the case of children) via subcutaneous injections (into a muscle or under the skin). Most of the time, it’s injected daily, although the frequency and dosage depend on your condition and your doctor’s prescription.  

There are two main injections devices for Genotropin: 

• The Genotropin GoQuick injector pen that contains multi-dose injections with a digital display and can be refilled with cartridges.
• The Genotropin MiniQuick prefilled disposable syringe that contains one dose of medicine.

Does Genotropin need to be refrigerated?

Like most human growth hormones such as Norditropin, Omnitrope, Humatrope, Nutropin, Saizen, Serostim, and others, Genotropin is a biological product . As such, it’s very sensitive to ambient conditions, especially light and temperature. Therefore, Genotropin requires specific storage conditions to guarantee its effectiveness and safety for use .

Whether or not you should refrigerate your Genotropin depends on the injection device you’re using and when you’ve opened it for the first time.

Genotropin is delivered in two-chamber cartridges , with the somatropin powder on one side and the liquid diluent on the other. Some but not all diluents contain preservatives. So whether you should refrigerate Genotropin really depends on if the medicine has been reconstituted (mixed) and if it contains preservatives .

Always read the storage instructions before use and ask your pharmacist if you have any doubts about storing your human growth hormone medication properly. Refrigeration and adequate storage conditions are essential parts of your treatment . Your medicine’s effectiveness, and ultimately your health, may depend on it.

Genotropin GoQuick Pen Refrigeration

According to Pfizer, the manufacturer of Genotropin, Genotropin GoQuick Pens (5 mg green pen and 12 mg purple pen) must be refrigerated .

The pens come with disposable multi-dose two-chamber cartridges. Prior to first use, the Genotropin is in a powder form in the top chamber of the cartridge while the diluent is in the bottom chamber .

Once you insert the cartridge into the pen for injection and start the pen, the medicine is mixed. Therefore, from now on, it must be refrigerated between injections and used within 28 days max. After 28 days, you must throw away the cartridge, even if there is still Genotropin inside. 

Refrigeration temperatures for Genotropin must be between 36°F and 46°F (2°C and 8°C). Make sure the temperature inside your refrigerator is neither too high nor too low, as freezing could also destroy your medicine .

Genotropin MiniQuick Refrigeration

The Genotropin MiniQuick injection device is a disposable and prefilled syringe for single use (one dose only). It’s pre-measured according to your doctor’s prescription and comes in a 7-day supply package .

Like the Genotropin reusable pens, the MiniQuick device contains a 2-chamber cartridge (but it's not replaceable) with Genotropin powder in one chamber and the liquid diluent in the other. The medicine is automatically mixed when you prepare the MiniQuick syringe for your injection.

According to the manufacturer, here’s how you should store and refrigerate your Genotropin MiniQuick devices: 

• Before mixing the growth hormone powder, you can store Genotropin MiniQuick devices in the refrigerator (between 36°F and 46°F / 2°C and 8°C) or at room temperature (between 68°Fand 77°F / 20°C and 25°C) for up to 3 months.
• Once Genotropin powder has been mixed with its diluent , it becomes unstable and must be injected immediately. If not, you must keep it refrigerated (between 36°F and 46°F / 2°C and8°C) and use it within 24 hours maximum.

How long does Somatropin last in the fridge?

Somatropin is the active ingredient sold under the brand name Genotropin. When delivered at the pharmacy, it comes in a 2-chamber container with a powder in one chamber and a diluent in the other .

How long Somatropin or Genotropin can last in the fridge depends on whether they’ve been mixed with the diluent or not . Simply put:

• Prior to mixing, Genotropin (or somatropin) can last up to 3 months in a refrigerator (or until the expiration date) or one month at room temperature .
• After reconstitution (mixing), Genotropin (or somatropin) can last 24 hours in the refrigerator with a MiniQuick device or 28 days in the fridge with the GoQuick pen device . The difference is that the MiniQuick device does not contain any preservatives, whereas the pen does.

What happens if Genotropin is not refrigerated?

While injecting Genotropin that has not been refrigerated should not poison you, it may have severe consequences for your or your child's health. The main risk is that you'd be injecting a growth hormone with little or no effect .

Indeed, letting human growth hormones get too hot or too long (freezing temperatures) over extended periods of time decreases their effectiveness .

How long can Genotropin stay out of the fridge?

Again, how long you can leave your Genotropin unrefrigerated depends on your device (GoQuick pen or MiniQuick) and the state of the medicine (reconstituted or not). However, here are the main guidelines: 

Genotropin cartridges for GoQuick Pens:

Before first use (reconstitution), the cartridges must be stored in their outer carton (so they’re protected from light): 

• in the refrigerator until their expiration date;
• or at room temperature (maximum 77°C / 25°C) for a maximum of one month.  

After reconstitution (mixing), the GoQuick Pen Genotropin cartridges must be stored: 

• in the refrigerator for up to 28 days max

Genotropin MiniQuick devices:

Before reconstitution, the prefilled Genotropin MiniQuick injection devices can last up to 3 months out of the refrigerator at room temperature (maximum 77°C / 25°C).

However, once the solution has been reconstituted (mixed), the somatropin inside becomes very unstable as there’s no preservative. Therefore, it should be injected immediately or kept in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours . It cannot be left unrefrigerated.

How to tell if Genotropin has gone bad?  

If you follow the storage instructions from the manufacturer and keep your medicine refrigerated as it should, there's no reason your Genotropin should go bad. 

Once reconstituted, Genotropin looks like a clear solution. If it looks cloudy, has changed color, or has particles in it, do not use it . These may be signs that it has gone bad. Call your pharmacist for a new medicine.

Never use Genotropin past its expiration date on the label .

Do not use it if the medicine looks cloudy, has changed colors, or has particles. Instead, call your pharmacist for new medicine. Throw away any Genotropin left over after the   expiration date   on the label has passed.

How to keep Genotropin cool while traveling?

Just after 2:00 pm Thursday, September 12, 2019 we took an Uber to Dulles Airport.  The plane left 2 hours late, which is never fun.

I had bought yet another container to help transport my Omnitrope .

I’ll be posting a review of the  Dison Care Insulin Cooler Travel Case Medication Cooling Bag  when we get back  I find it amazing that I ordered the black for $59.00 with a 10% coupon.  The same thing in white is $65.00 with no coupon.

This “bottle” fit perfectly in the water bottle compartment of my backpack.

Going through TSA, I told the woman outside the scanner that I was carrying this and had paperwork.  She handed me the paperwork back and put the Dison in a separate container to scan.

I went through and a TSA agent told me very rudely that I should know that I wasn’t supposed to carry liquids.  I explained again that it was refrigerated, prescription medicine and I had paperwork.  He had me get over to the side while he called in another agent and they started inspecting everything.  The new agent said that they had never seen anything like this.  There was a little thermometer on a longish strand (I wasn’t using it) but apparently, it looked like a way to detonate the whole case.  After a lot of swabbing, discussion and annoyance on my part I was allowed to leave.

I decided that I will never fly with growth hormone again.  It is not worth the time and hassle to me.

This case will be fantastic for train/car/walking/anything but flying.

As it turned out, I only needed it in the ho(s)tel in Copenhagen.  The cruise had a sharps container in the bathroom.  I had noticed that on a previous cruise and was so glad to see that they are providing this service.

I carried the actual sharps separately in my checked baggage.

After 12 hours at 8:15am Copenhagen time (2:15 pm at home) I finally removed the growth hormone from the bottle.  The ice pack was still pretty hard and the GH was still cool.  Next time, I’ll try the little thermometer thing (I need to charge the batteries first) and see how accurate that is.

A good solution except for airport issues.  Did I mention that I will never fly with GH again?

FRIO Travel Cooler for Medications

If you travel with medications, syringes, or eye drops you will want to read the following post! We travel with Growth Hormone syringes and after many trying trips, I finally solved how to keep syringes and medications at an even temperature when refrigeration and ice is not available.

Plans to travel to third world countries had me wondering just how to carry Growth Hormone and keep it safe from extreme temperatures. Power shedding, lack of refrigeration and freezers, parasites, and contaminated water were just a few of my concerns. I needed a TSA approved coolant that would keep medications cool when I had no access to refrigeration or ice. Then I discovered the FRIO Travel Cooler for Medications!

FRIO Travel Cooler Moves Mountains

For our travel needs, the FRIO Travel Cooler is perfect. It keeps Andrew’s syringes cool and I can re-hydrate it with water when ice, refrigeration, and electricity isn’t available. This reusable, cooling pack comes in varying sizes. I purchased the large size wallet and the medical carry case. The case is TSA approved.

The carry case offers storage for a small sharps container, as well as rubbing alcohol pads, our letter of medical necessity, and a few other basic first aid items, like Band-Aids. When using our FRIO, I remove the syringes from the prescription box because of how much room it takes up. However, it is imperative t o travel with the prescription label so I keep the box and label dry by placing it in a baggie which I store flat with the syringes. To date, I have never had an issue with this method, whether traveling domestically or overseas.

Activating the FRIO Pouch

To activate our FRIO, I soak it in water for 5-10 minutes, no more than 15 minutes.  For the first 5 minutes I like to pinch and move the crystals around as they expand into a gel-like substance.

Having lost my mind while packing for the last trip, I let the FRIO soak for several hours and it was so swollen I could barely fit one syringe inside. It was unusable and took f-o-r-e-v-e-r to dry out.  It is important to not over-soak the FRIO cooler! The cooling crystals will remain cool for two days. I re-soak the pouch every few days for as long as needed.

A Heat Test for the FRIO Cooler

When I first received our FRIO pouch, I left it in the hot car to test the temperature. The car’s temperature was 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The pack was warm on the outside. My heart sank, but surprisingly enough it was nice cool 70 degrees on the inside. I was thrilled! A cool FRIO in a hot car meant our travels were no longer tied to electricity and refrigeration.

Temperature Awareness

Be aware that the FRIO Cooler is just that – a cooler – it is not designed to keep refrigerated temperatures. While the FRIO is specifically designed for insulin users, I know other travelers who also use the cooler to keep their eye drops and prescriptions at a constant temperature.

Information for Prader-Willi syndrome travelers: I researched temperature requirements for the Genotropin Miniquicks (Growth Hormone) that I need to pack for Andrew. I gleaned the following information from the Pfizer Medical Information Section.

“Before you mix the growth hormone powder with the liquid in the syringe, you can store the GENOTROPIN MINIQUICK in the refrigerator [36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C)]. However, you can also store the GENOTROPIN MINIQUICK at room temperature [68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C)] for up to three months. I suggest checking with your pharmaceutical company or Google their medications descriptions for related safe storage requirements. The FRIO will keep a temperature of 60°F-72°F depending upon the weather it is exposed to.

I can carry our Miniquicks at room temperature but using the FRIO I’m assured that the temperature will remain constant regardless of the climate we find ourselves in.

Drying the FRIO Pouch

After using the FRIO pouch, I air dry it on my laundry rack for several weeks. Every once in awhile, I use my fingers to move around the crystals and separate the lumps. Once dried, the crystals return to their natural hardness. I store the pouch, wallet, and carry tote with our first aid supplies until I need it for the next outing.

Besides travel, you can use the FRIO cooler for emergency situations. Last summer, we lost power for three days and the coolant pouch came in handy to keep our Growth Hormone syringes cool as the house grew hot and stuffy. Yes, storing insulin is its main function. In fact, many customers use it specifically for insulin storage. Unopened insulin should be kept in a refrigerator at 35-46°F or 2-8°C,  taking care not to go below 32°F or 0℃ as this may lead to crystallization. Be sure to use it before the expiration date.

Temperature and Cooling Duration

The Travel Cooler Case can operate within an ambient temperature range of 35-113°F or 2-45°C , maintaining the internal temperature of the case at 35-46°F or 2-8°C.

When plugged in, the box can cool indefinitely. When using the Bio-Gel Ice Pack, it can maintain for approximately 30 hours (at a room temperature of 35-46°F or 2-8°C). When using an ice bucket, it can maintain for about 6-8 hours.

There is an LED display on the lid of the Travel Cooler Case that shows the current temperature.

If your journey extends beyond 24 hours and there is a power source at your rest stops, the Standard model would be the ideal choice. This model offers a cooling period of 30 hours when utilizing Bio-Gel Ice Pack , and can operate indefinitely when plugged in.

If your travel duration exceeds 48 hours and the power source at your rest stops is unreliable, the Unlimited model would be optimal. This variant provides 30 hours of cooling using a Bio-Gel Ice Pack , an additional 12 hours of insulation with a single Power Bank , and can operate indefinitely when plugged in.

For journeys not exceeding 24 hours, the Portable model would be suitable. It provides a cooling duration of 30 hours using a Bio-Gel Ice Pack, and a 6-hour cooling period when using an ice bucket .

The cooling time is related to the ambient temperature. The cooling times mentioned above were measured at an ambient temperature of 77°F or 25°C. The cooler operates at temperatures from 35-113°F or 2-45°C  .
