10 TV Shows About Italy To Watch Before Your Trip

Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy - Best TV Shows About Italy

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read the disclaimer here .

I don’t know about your home country but in the UK, every minor celebrity seems to have their own travel TV shows about Italy. Inevitably, at least one episode features this B-list personality strolling down cobbled streets in a straw hat slurping pasta and sipping chianti. And who could blame them?!

There aren’t just lots of travel shows about Italy focusing on food or culture either. Some of the best Italian shows on Netflix, for example, are dramas set amongst the crowds of Florence or vineyards outside Venice.

If you’re visiting Italy soon, you will no doubt want to seek out as many awesome films and shows about Italy as you can!

Check out these blog posts for recommendations of movies set in Venice , Rome , Sicily , and the rest of Italy .

But if you are specifically looking for a mix of travel shows and TV shows set in Italy, you’re in the right place! Here are some of the best options. There’s a slight UK bias but you should be able to source most of these recommendations wherever you are.

List of TV Shows About Italy: Travel Shows and More

1. travel man: 48 hours in….

English | 11 Seasons (so far) | 30-60m | Watch on Channel 4

  • Season 2, Episode 6: Venice with Jo Brand
  • Season 3, Episode 4:  Naples with Jack Dee
  • Season 3, Episode 5:  Florence with Rebel Wilson
  • Season 5, Episode 1:  Rome with Matt Lucas
  • Season 7, Episode 4:  Milan with Morgana Robinson

Let’s start with not just one of the best Italy travel shows, but one of my favourite travel shows of all time. Presented by Richard Ayoade since 2015 with Joe Lycett taking over in 2021,  Travel Man  usually focuses on easy weekend city break destinations from the UK.

The presenter goes on a weekend break with a famous guest, usually a comedian/comic actor, and they have a lovely time.

So far, the show has covered many major Italian cities with direct flights from the UK. They still have Palermo, Catania, Turin, Verona, Genoa, Palermo, Bari, and Bologna plus some others yet to cover so we don’t have to rule out more Italian content in the future!

All episodes are free to watch on Channel 4  in the UK and some of the series are on  Netflix  for international audiences.

2. From Scratch

English, Italian | 8 Episodes | 60m | Watch on Netflix

Although it didn’t get the love it deserved when first released at the end of 2022, this limited series is one of the best Italian shows on Netflix .

From Scratch  is a show based on the memoir by Tembi Locke (also incredible). She’s an American who studies abroad for a year in Florence where she meets her future husband, who is a chef from Sicily . However, once they return to the US to live together, illness and family tensions seek to tear them apart.

I must warn you that the last few episodes are unbelievably sad (you’ll be ugly crying throughout). But it displays incredible scenery from both Tuscany and Sicily as well as lots of Italian cooking!

3. Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy

English, Italian | 2 Seasons (so far) | 60m | Watch on BBC iPlayer

Hands down,  this  is one of the most popular Italian TV shows if not  the  most popular Italy travel show of all time.

Tucci, who speaks Italian and has Italian heritage on both sides of his family, is on a quest to explore all 20 regions in Italy. He’s deep diving into the dishes, flavours, wines, and heart of everywhere from Bolzano to Basilicata.

So far, he’s covered: Campania, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardia, Tuscany, Sicily, Veneto, Piedmont, Calabria, Sardinia, Puglia, and Liguria. Unfortunately, CNN cancelled the show after two seasons in 2022 but Tucci has promised to continue without them. Watch this space!

4. The White Lotus

English | 2 Seasons (so far) | 60m | Watch on Amazon Prime

The White Lotus  was a HUGE hit when HBO released season one in 2021. It’s a drama set in a hotel of the same name in Maui where one of the characters ends up dead. Since it’s an anthology show, season two was transplanted to another White Lotus hotel with an almost entirely new cast in Taormina , Sicily .

It’s absolutely one of the most popular TV shows set in Italy in recent years. And the best part is, you don’t really need to watch the first season to understand this one! Although you really should, they’re both incredible television shows.

Season two will make you want to stay in a five-star hotel, until you look at the room rates, of course. Luckily, there are tons of gorgeous agriturismos and villas in Sicily you can book instead.

The White Lotus One of the Best TV Shows About Italy

5. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

English | 12 Seasons | 60m | Watch on Amazon Prime

  • Season 2, Episode 6:  Sicily
  • Season 8, Episode 10:  Rome
  • Season 10, Episode 8:  Southern Italy

Anthony Bourdain was the master of food and travel TV shows. I always end up watching at least one episode from one of his shows before travelling anywhere, because he seems to have travelled  everywhere .

You can’t help but learn something you didn’t expect from Anthony Bourdain. In his landmark series Parts Unknown he shows Italy, and all of the places he travels to, in a different light than 99.9% of travel TV series in Italy.

It’s a real shame he didn’t shoot more episodes in Italy but it’s understandable that he didn’t since this country is well-traversed terrain. The show is called Parts Unknown , after all!

Anthony Bourdain has two other travel food shows,  No Reservations  and  The Layover , with episodes set in Italy. These shows and Parts Unknown  often appear on Netflix, so watch out for them the next time you are searching for Netflix Italian TV shows.

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

6. Somebody Feed Phil (+ I’ll Have What Phil’s Having)

English | 6 Seasons/Limited Series | 45-60m | Watch on Netflix | Watch on Amazon Prime

  • Season 2, Episode 1:  Venice
  • ( Season 1, Episode 2:  Italy)

The Anti-Bourdain (in a good way!), Phil Rosenthal is an affable presenter who will inspire you to eat all of the things and travel to all of the places. While making lighthearted ‘my wife’ jokes, feeding the crew, and making his loved ones back in the US jealous of his treats, of course.

Somebody Feed Phil is one of the best TV shows in Venice I’ve ever watched. During my trip to Venice in April 2023, I visited almost all the places suggested during his episode! As a Netflix Original, it’s one of the top Italian TV shows on Netflix too.

If you weren’t aware,  Somebody Feed Phil  started out as a PBS show called  I’ll Have What Phil’s Having . You used to be able to watch every episode for free on YouTube but sadly, it’s been taken down.

I’m still mentioning it as the Italy episode was perfect and you can still access it through Amazon Prime in some countries.

Somebody Feed Phil One of the Best TV Shows About Italy

7. Francesco’s Italy: Top to Toe

English, Italian | 4 Episodes | 60m | Watch Free on YouTube

One of the more random entries on this list, I literally searched ‘Italy’ in BBC iPlayer before my trip to Rome in June 2018 and found this travel show from 2006. Francesco da Mosto is a Venetian architect who drives his Alpha Romeo Spider across Italy, from the north to the south.

This TV show is super helpful if you’re planning a trip but you’re not sure  where to go in Italy . It covers the entire country!

Just some of the things I learned about from watching this Italy TV programme were more about the Fiat car, the British Aristocracy’s history in Tuscany, and the poverty of Sicily. British actress Dame Maggie Smith even makes an appearance!

Even though it’s no longer on BBC iPlayer, you can play all four episodes for free on YouTube.

Francesco's Italy: Top to Toe

8. The Trip to Italy

English | 6 Episodes | 30m | Watch on Amazon Prime

I still don’t understand the  The Trip… format. There have been four seasons so far (2010’s  The Trip  set in the Lake District, 2014’s  The Trip to Italy , 2017’s  The Trip to Spain  and 2020’s  The Trip to Greece ).

But then these series are re-released as films? Plus, the premise is that comedic British actors Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan visit restaurants in these places to ‘review’ them for a newspaper column, which is fake.

They even play fictionalised versions of themselves featuring kids they don’t have in real life. Is this what  Made in Chelsea  is like?!

Regardless, it’s still a fun TV series set in Italy. They follow in the footsteps of the British romantic poets and visit lots of places from Capri to Piedmont .

Although you can watch it through Amazon Prime , this is another show that often hits Netflix .

The Trip to Italy

9. Everybody Loves Raymond

English | 9 Seasons | 30m | Watch on Channel 4

  • Season 5, Episodes 1&2: Italy

Yes, I’m including the two episodes of the US sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond  that were set in Italy on this list! It’s my list, I can do what I like.

Coincidentally, Phil Rosenthal of  Somebody Feeds Phil  was the creator of  Everybody Loves Raymond  so it all ties together. Ray Romano plays Ray Barone, a family man with three kids living in Long Island, NY with his parents living across the street.

I remember watching  Everybody Loves Raymond  on Channel 4 every morning before school. I used to look forward to the Italy episodes in Rome at the start of season five as they would always make me dream of visiting Italy one day.

In the UK, you can watch every episode for free on Channel 4 but I’m sure you can stream them in other places worldwide.

Everybody Loves Raymond

10. Master of None

English, Italian | 3 Seasons | 30m | Watch on Netflix

  • Season 2, Episode 1: The Thief
  • Season 2, Episode 2:  Le Nozze

Raise your hand, who wants to take a break from your life to be a pasta-making apprentice for three months? Oh, and you also get to live in the gorgeous city of Modena, Italy ? Me too, my friend. Me too…

Master of None  is mostly set in New York but the first two episodes of season two are in Italy. There are homages to Italian neorealist film  The Bicycle Thief  and it’s so wanderlust-inducing that it has to be one of the top Italian Netflix shows.

Master of None

Other TV Shows About Italy: A Taste of Italy  (2021),  Alex Polizzi’s Secret Italy (2014),  Alex Polizzi’s Italian Islands  (2016),  We Are Who We Are  (2020),  Luna Nera  (2020),  My Brilliant Friend ,  Hotel Portofino  (2022)

TV Shows About Italy: That’s a Wrap!

“Somebody Feed Phil” on Netflix is an amazing show if food is also important during the trip. The show contains 22 cities on different continents, and Venice and Modena (Italy) was also beautifully represented. Apparently a new season is also coming. Philip Rosenthal is the creator of “Everybody Loves Raymond”.

Hey Coenraad! Yes, I LOVE Somebody Feed Phil!! I wrote this guide back in the spring of 2018 so I hadn’t heard of him then…

Let her lead you into a lesser-seen side of the Caribbean in her new two-part documentary, Joanna Lumley’s Hidden Caribbean: Havana to Haiti, which begins in a boxing gym in the lively Cuban capital.

What to watch:   If delicious food is at the very top of your reasons-to-travel list,  Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat  is the Netflix show to tune into.

Culinary capers abound as loveable chef  Samin Nosrat takes us to Italy, Japan, Mexico and California to show us how the title elements are key to the cuisine of each country.

Where to watch it: See   Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat  on Netflix now.

5. Ugly Delicious (2020)

What to watch: H ungry for more? Try Netflix's  Ugly Delicious  – there are two series to devour, as chef David Chang takes us to culinary hotspots across the world, showing us why good cooking is universal.

He meets everyone from pizza purists in Brooklyn and Naples to trying Viet-Cajun fusion cuisine in Houston.

Where to watch it: Catch the new series of  Ugly Delicious  on Netflix .

6. Night on Earth (2020)

What to watch:  Even when you're travelling, you don't get to see some of the most incredible sights - because some of them happen under the very cover of darkness.

In Netflix's Night on Earth , you can see this world open up before you, witnessing the secret lives of lions, bats and monkeys. Eerie and visually compelling stuff.

Where to watch it:  Night on Earth is on Netflix now.

7. James May: Our Man In Japan (2020)

What you'll watch:  We know you loved Japan with Sue Perkins , but now that's it not available on iPlayer… how about racing through the island country with James May, instead?

Starting on the chilly northern island of Hokkaido, James embarks on a journey south to the balmy beaches of Shikoku and Kyushu, while meeting samurai in Honshu, sampling street food in Osaka and, of course, tackling the Suzuka Circuit on his way.

Where to watch it:  Watch  James May: Our Man in Japan  on Amazon Prime now.

8. Travel Man: 48 Hours in… (2019)

What you'll watch:  Richard Ayoade's droll two-day jaunts through cities across the world has provided us all with laughs since 2015.

While 2019's series was his last as lead presenter, we can still look forward to more Travel Man in the future as Hugo Boss – aka the the comedian formerly known as Joe Lycett – takes over the role.

If you haven't seen 48 Hours in… Amsterdam , it's the perfect episode to get a feel for Hugo's personality and learn more about the city's culture, cuisine and canals.

Where to watch it: Find the past ten series of Travel Man: 48 Hours in… on All 4 .

9. Great Railway Journeys with Michael Portillo (2019)

What you'll watch:  Thousands of British commuters have  plenty to say about UK train travel, but in the hands of Michael Portillo, the divisive subject matter seems to take on a golden glow of nostalgia.

You know best, after all – you voted for the BBC's  Great Railway Journeys  as one of your top TV programmes in the last year.

Delving into the history of British rail, Michael reveals things we never knew about our local stations, including how an unlikely collaboration between London’s Crossrail railway project and a conservation charity is helping to protect birdlife in Series 11's Limehouse to Rochford episode.

Where to watch it:  Look out for your local station on  Great British Railway Journeys   on iPlayer.

10. Around the World in 80 Days (1989)

What to watch:  It's an oldie, but definitely a goodie – what could be better than staying in and getting a glimpse of how the world used to be with TV icon Michael Palin?

In Around the World in 80 Days , Michael follows in the footsteps of its main character Phileas Fogg, setting off on an epic adventure from London's Reform Club across the world.

Close shaves, missed connections and inevitable delays await as he desperately attempts to meet the 80-day deadline in time. A delicious throwback to a simpler time.

Where to watch it:  Watch  Around the World in 80 Days on iPlayer .

11. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (2013)

What to watch:  The late Anthony Bourdain's Emmy-winning travel series is a must-watch for any traveller whose adventures are driven by a passion for excellent food.

Parts Unknown sees the world-renowned chef and documentarian delve into cuisines, cultures and politics in countries across the globe. Essentially, he eats his way around the world.

With 12 seasons covering countless destinations (Vietnam and New York said to be two of his favourites), the later seasons take viewers on an off-the-beaten-track culinary journey through Armenia, Uruguay, Myanmar and beyond.

Where to watch it: You can stream the series on Amazon Prime now.

12. Dark Tourist (2018)

What to watch: If you've watched the majority of travel TV already, here's one that may have slipped by you.

TV presenter David Farrier deep dives into so-called 'dark tourism': worldwide interest in visiting sites of nuclear disasters, destinations marred by danger or even death. If you've been to Chernobyl and Pripyat in Ukraine, you'll understand the fascination.

You can expect to see a trip to Turkmenistan, a visit to Pablo Escobar's former playground, Medellin in Colombia, as well as an excursion to Tomioka in Japan, the ghost town left behind after residents were evacuated following the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Where to watch it: You can stream one season of  Dark Tourist now on Netflix .

And… anything narrated by Sir David Attenborough

13. our planet (2019).

You can also listen to Sir David's dulcet tones on BBC iPlayer - as he takes us through  Seven Worlds, One Planet , introducing us to some of the globe's most hostile habitats and remote landscapes, while narrating the fascinating behaviour of the local creatures, such as golden snub-nosed monkeys and grey-headed albatross chicks .

Where to watch it: Find  Our Planet   along with most of Sir David's past shows on Netflix or catch up on  Seven Worlds, One Planet on iPlayer now.

The best shows on BBC iPlayer (and how to stream them anywhere)

Here are our top iPlayer picks, and how to watch them abroad

The best shows on BBC iPlayer

Brits have it pretty good when it comes to streaming. Alongside all the paid-for options, they also get BBC iPlayer , a totally free and very user-friendly service that delivers tons of quality TV, available ad-free to absolutely anyone.

Compared to those in the US and other countries, that means you can realistically get by without paying for any streaming service like Netflix and still have a huge range of shows to watch – from kids content to weighty dramas, reality shows to classic films and a healthy dose of British comedy, all alongside streams of the live BBC channels.

So, if you're stuck with too much choice to make a decision, here we'll be running down the best shows on BBC iPlayer available right now.

  • The best US only Netflix shows , as well as UK and other-region exclusives
  • Here's how to watch BBC live anywhere
  • Stay up to date with our VPN testing: Which VPNs work with Netflix

Watching BBC iPlayer outside the UK

ExpressVPN New Logo

ExpressVPN is our #1 recommendation for accessing the best shows on BBC iPlayer outside the UK. With excellent speeds, unrivalled location spoofing power and easy-to-use apps, it's the perfect choice for watching iPlayer anywhere. Plus, Tom's Guide readers can now claim three months free on any 12-month plan.

If you're not currently in the UK, you'll notice that you won't be able to watch anything on iPlayer. This is because the BBC blocks access for those in other countries due to distribution rights of its shows.

However, if you've left the country on a work trip or holiday and still want to keep up with the best shows on BBC iPlayer, there's a handy workaround to get access.

All you need to do is sign up to a quality iPlayer VPN and then connect to a UK VPN server. By doing this you'll trick iPlayer into thinking you're still in the UK, meaning you can watch whatever you want, wherever you are.

The best VPN we've tested with iPlayer is ExpressVPN . It's fast, effective, and super secure for all your other VPN needs, too.

There are a couple of things to note, however. First up, to watch the BBC you're required to pay the TV Licence fee, and using a VPN predictably goes against iPlayer's terms and conditions – so bear that in mind when you're watching abroad.

The best shows on BBC iPlayer

I may destroy you.

The best shows on BBC iPlayer: I May Destroy You

Michaela Coel's surreal tour de force is a powerful, affecting and deceptively funny exploration of the Me Too movement, race, sexuality, and millennials at large trying to make it in the 'real world'. Following burgeoning social media personality and reluctant author Arabella (Coel) after she is drugged and raped at a club, I May Destroy You documents her coming to terms with the assault, her plans for revenge, and trying to rebuild her life along the way.

The best shows on BBC iPlayer: The Terror

The Terror is a chilling and engaging adaptation of the 2007 Dan Simmons novel of the same name, which is a fictionalized account of Sir john Franklin's doomed expedition of the Canadian Arctic.

Although season 2 isn't available on iPlayer yet, season 1 is a self-contained story – the second instalment skips ahead over a hundred years to WWII. That means you won't be left on edge waiting to find out what happens to Franklin and his crew.

Executive produced by Ridley Scott (amongst others), The Terror is seriously compelling television, and now it's available for absolutely free on BBC iPlayer after a two-year stint of Amazon and AMC distribution.

Killing Eve

The best shows on BBC iPlayer: Killing Eve

If you haven't at least heard of Killing Eve, you'll want to get to know sooner rather than later. Based on Luke Jennings' Villanelle novels, Killing Eve follows sacked MI5 officer/newly recruited MI6 operative Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) while the captivating Villanelle (Jodie Comer) goes about her daily business as an assassin. Made even more compelling by the two scintillating leads, Killing Eve's story twists and turns, with the first series (written by Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge) being a real highlight. Keep an ear out for Comer's accent mastery too – you'd never guess she was a native Liverpudlian until you watch an out-of-character interview.

RuPaul's Drag Race UK

The best shows on BBC iPlayer: RuPaul's Drag Race UK

Ever watched RuPaul's Drag Race but wished the contestants embodied British icons like Katie Price and Scary Spice? Drag Race UK should have you covered. It's exactly what you think it is – a British version of the classic US Drag Race (albeit without the hefty cash prize) – and has proved incredibly popular even outside the UK. If you're looking for out-there personalities, essentially meaningless but infinitely quotable lines like 'nipples are the eyes of the face', plus RuPaul, Graham Norton and Alan Carr slating hapless hopefuls, Drag Race UK will be right up your alley. God save the Queens.

Line of Duty

The best shows on BBC iPlayer: Line of Duty

For those looking for something a bit more serious, Jed Mercurio's Line of Duty should do the job. Over six series (the most recent airing as we speak), Anti-Corruption Unit 12 polices the police, busting bent coppers and making sure the long arm of the law stays on the straight and narrow. While the action is entertaining, the highlights of the show are the lengthy interrogation scenes, in which DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) drill into suspects and uncover the truth.

Best Netflix shows you can’t watch in the US: Doctor Who

Starting off with the first reboot series starring Christopher Eccleston, Doctor Who went from uncertain revival to world-beating success. If you're not sure of the concept (perhaps you're a Dalek), the Doctor is a time-travelling alien who interferes with evil and protects the innocent, usually with a human sidekick or two in tow. But we don't really need to tell you this – all you need to know is that every season of the twenty-first-century reboot is available for free on BBC iPlayer.

Absolutely Fabulous

The best shows on BBC iPlayer: Absolutely Fabulous

Developing from a French and Saunders sketch into a fully fledged bastion of British comedy with the addition of Joanna Lumley, Absolutely Fabulous details the exploits of two apparently successful women who really seem more interested in drinking wine, smoking cigarettes and recapturing their halcyon days than doing any work. Eddy Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) is consistently led astray by Patsy Stone (Lumley), and is very often the child in her relationship with daughter Saffy (Julia Sawalha). It's 90s comedy at its finest, and subversive enough to stand its ground against modern competition.

Gavin and Stacey

The best shows on BBC iPlayer: Gavin and Stacey

A Christmas essential in the UK, Gavin and Stacey is available all year round on BBC iPlayer. US viewers might be more familiar with Smithy (James Corden) than they will be with Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page), but the series is a heartfelt coming together (or not!?) of two very different families – one from the very English Essex, and one from the very Welsh Barry. Co-writer Ruth Jones' Nessa is blunt but brilliant, and Rob Brydon's Bryn is is always entertaining to watch – and what really did happen on that fishing trip?

Death in Paradise

The best shows on BBC iPlayer: Death in Paradise

Easy to watch but deceptively clever, the sun-soaked Death in Paradise follows a series of British detectives (currently Ralf Little) as they investigate a seemingly endless number of fatal crimes committed on the fictional Caribbean Island of Saint Marie – think Midsomer Murders holding a rum punch. Supported by an excellent cast of local Saint Marie officers and detectives, Death in Paradise is an excellent way to chase away the lockdown blues.

Are you looking for some amazing travel TV shows to feed your wanderlust?

There is nothing better than watching inspiring travel TV shows when you don’t get to travel. They are entertaining, helpful to plan your travels and open your mind (and heart) to new places.

I absolutely love watching travel shows on TV. While it’s true that I prefer doing the actual travelling, I’m like everybody else and I also enjoy staying at home and dreaming of my next destinations.

I spend a lot of time watching travel shows and find it to be not just entertaining, but enlightening!

Sometimes you will discover underrated places that you would have never thought of going. And that’s the great thing about it, you don’t only get to learn about the places you want to go. You discover new places!

It’s also a very good way to learn more about the culture of these places.

As you may know, I love discovering new cultures. I find all of them so incredibly interesting. Foreign languages, food, history… there is just so much to discover. It’s so interesting and exciting!

Here are some of the best travel TV shows to watch now!

🔎 Table of Contents

1. Jack Whitehall: Travels with my father

Jack Whitehall is a famous British comedian. He is mainly known to be the posh lad in Fresh Meat (filmed in Manchester by the way 😉 ).

In real life, Jack Whitehall actually is a very posh Londoner. He comes from a wealthy family and never got the chance to go backpacking as many young people do.

On top of that, he always had quite a difficult relationship with his dad, who is 79.

This is why, in 2017, Jack Whitehall invites his dad, Michael, to go backpacking with him in Asia for a Netflix original series .

By that, I mean proper backpacking. Sleeping in hostels, taking cheap transportation, carrying a backpack… and guess what, his dad said yes!

This show is absolutely hilarious and a perfect mix between comedy and travel. If you need something to cheer you up and make you dream of foreign lands, it’s the perfect choice!

In the first season, they travel through countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

It’s so funny to watch as the dad is quite a character. He is a very posh person and obviously not quite happy about the lack of comfort.

If you like British humour, Jack and Michael Whitehall will crack you up!

The show had so much success that it was renewed for a second season in Europe . A continent that Michael famously voted to leave! In the third season, they go to America and here again, it takes a whole new dimension.

Give it a try, you will be hooked straight from the first episode! It’s so funny and arguably the best travel reality show on Netflix!

2. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

You may know Anthony Bourdain as a chef but did you know that he had a few travel shows as well?

My favourite is Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown .

This American food and travel show was produced by CNN and ran from 2013 to 2018. Sadly, Anthony died while working on a show about Strasbourg, France on the 8th of June 2018.

In this show, he travels the world and focuses on the lesser-known and underrated places.

He goes to pretty much any country you can think of and explores the culture and cuisine with locals. Very often he goes around with local guides, sometimes he also gets to meet famous personalities.

In his episode about Lyon in France, he goes for dinner with Paul Bocuse, the famous French chef.

Bourdain has this very unique way to explore the world. He sees the beauty in everything and always makes sure to be in perfect sync with local cultures.

He had this unique ability to see the world as the absolute beauty it really is and through Parts Unknown, shares his vision of the world’s cultures.

It’s not a show that I would categorise as funny, although there are some quirks. But it’s definitely the most interesting and passionate one of this list!

3. Down to Earth

Seasons:  1

This is a fun travel show / documentary to watch. It stars Zac Efron who travels around the world with wellness expert Darin Olien.

The goal of these travels is to discover more sustainable ways to live. They go everywhere around the world including Iceland, Sardinia and South America.

Each destination highlight a specific sustainable lifestyle. For example, Sardinia in Italy is known as a blue zone. A blue zone is an area with more people reaching the age of 100 than the average.

When they get to Sardinia, they meet with locals and experts to try to understand how the way people live and eat has impacted their health.

Darin Olien is known to be big on super foods so you will also learn plenty about that when they go to South America.

All in all, this is a great show to watch as it perfectly mixes together fun and education.

4. BBC Race Across the World

Even though the Amazing Race is a concept available in almost all countries, it doesn’t exist in the UK.

But don’t you worry, the BBC thought that through and created its own program!

The concept of the Race across the world is a bit different though. In this show, you will follow 5 pairs of travellers on an epic race across the world.

In the first season, their mission is to go from London to Singapore without taking a single flight.

They are being given a bit of money, the equivalent of a flight ticket from London to Singapore ie about £1000. With this money, they have to go to Singapore without flying.

This means they have to find transport, accommodation and food for a month within that £500 budget per head. Each pair adopts a different strategy.

They take all sorts of transportation. Some hitchhike, some take the bus…

It’s a very entertaining thing to watch. You will surprise yourself trying to plan that trip as well!

5. Somebody Feed Phil

Seasons:  4

This Netflix Original is an excellent thing to watch if you love both travelling and food.

You will follow Philip Rosenthal on his trips around the world and discover the local delicacies.

There is no better way to understand the local culture than eating local dishes with the locals themselves and that’s what Phil is doing here.

From the floating markets in Thailand to the classic Mexican cantinas, he tries it all!

The best thing about this show is that you will discover so much more than just food and drinks.

He really tries to understand the local culture and why things are the way they are.

It’s also worth noting that Phil is a very happy and funny guy which makes it very pleasant to watch.

6. Instant Hotel

Instant Hotel is an Australian reality show that follows several teams of homeowners.

Each duo owns a holiday rental in Australia and will host the other contestants for a day and a night.

It’s a nice thing to watch if you love Australia or would like to visit one day.

You will get to see several states including Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Northern Territory.

Not only will you see some very famous locations such as Bondi Beach but will also get to discover some hidden gems.

There are 2 seasons available on Netflix.

7. Ugly Delicious

This is another food and travel TV show on Netflix. In this one, you will follow chef David Chang on his journey around the world.

A bit like Anthony Bourdain used to do, Chang is using food to tackle misconceptions and break down cultural barriers.

Food is a powerful way to experience a country and learn more about the local culture. Chef Chang knows that and he shows you exactly how to!

He is also joined by guests including other chefs, artists, activists and plenty more. With him, you’ll discover many different regions including the USA, Asia and Europe.

8. Dark Tourist

In Dark Tourist, the journalist David Farrier focuses on something rarely talked about: Dark Tourism. Dark tourism is the fact of travelling to places associated with death or tragedy.

This type of travel is getting more and more popular and that’s why David Farrier goes to experience it and share with us his journey.

Dark Tourist is a very interesting show to watch as clearly, he is immersing himself into some culture and believes that you probably never even heard of before that.

Secondly, it can get quite funny and that Kiwi accent is always so cute!

Lastly, let’s be honest, it’s bloody weird! And clearly extremely interesting. I had no idea most of these things existed and although it can be creepy at times, it is quite interesting to know more about them.

9. Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris is a Netflix Original TV Show that was released in 2020. It was created by Darren Star (best known for “Sex and the City”).

It’s the story of Emily Cooper, an American girl, who moves to Paris to work in a French marketing agency.

Although it was argued that the show was full of clichés, it is still a very cool thing to watch. As a French person, I loved it!

It may not quite be representative of what a normal french life is but it highlights the most magical aspects of Paris! It will make you dream!

Emily Cooper is played by Lily Collins (British-American actress) but most of the other main characters are French which makes the show even better!

They all speak English (some with a better accent than others).

It’s a feel-good travel show that will make you want to visit Paris straight away!

And if you do, you will be able to visit Emily in Paris filming locations!

10. Griff’s Great Australian Rail Trip

Looking for a travel show about Australia? Here you go!

This 2020 docuseries is one of the best things to watch before going to Australia.

Here you will see Griff Rhys Jones, a Welsh comedian, taking on an amazing train journey from Perth to Sydney and Darwin to Adelaide.

Not only is it a great way to see what the Indian Pacific and The Ghan trains are like but you will also get to learn so much about the Australian outback and culture.

You can tell that Griff is truly fascinated by Australia and he will definitely make you want to jump on a plane straight away!

11. The Kindness Diaries

The Kindness Diaries is one of the best travel programmes if you also love motorbikes (don’t worry if you don’t though, it’s fun either way but if you do like motorbikes, this is the ultimate best travel series for you).

You will follow the adventures of Leon who travels around the world on a vintage motorcycle relying solely on the kindness of strangers for accommodation, food and even petrol.

This is an extraordinary travel tv program. Not only is it interesting and fun but seeing the kindness of people all around the world is simply the most moving thing you can see.

It will leave you quite emotional on a few occasions!

12. James May: Our man in Japan

You may know James May as one of the presenters of Top Gear. But he’s got way more in store than you’d think.

In this Amazon Prime original , James May goes to Japan and experiences many aspects of Japanese Culture.

He goes to all the main cities including Tokyo and Kyoto but also some more remote places in the Japanese countryside.

James May is a typical British guy and definitely knows how to come up with the best comments!

Just picture him, in Japan, not speaking a single word of Japanese, clueless about the culture… and yet going for it!

It’s a very interesting mix of fun and culture.

If you love Japan, you will definitely like it but even if you don’t have any specific interest in this country, you will still enjoy it, I promise!

You can watch this amazing show on Amazon Prime.

If you are looking for comedy travel shows, look no further! This one will make you laugh out loud!

This 2-season show features 3 famous chefs in the UK: Gordon Ramsay, Gino D’Acampo, and Fred Serieix.

It is a very cool show and you get to discover their home countries of Italy , France and Scotland but also some other destinations such as Texas or Mexico.

14. By Any Means

Seasons:  1 (6 episodes)

This one is for all the adventurers out there! Unlike some of the shows out there that are quite commercialised, this one is very pure and honest. You will be following Charley Boorman, an Irishman who decides to go from his small hometown in Ireland all the way down to Australia without flying.

Charley is not doing all of that on his own. He is with a team which makes it even more entertaining.

In the first episode, you will see how they went about planning the trip itself which was pretty challenging back in 2008. After that, the good stuff starts and you follow them on this incredible journey.

It’s a great way to learn more about hidden gems and underrated travel destinations.

Click here to watch on Amazon Prime.

15. The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour is British motoring show featuring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. Although it is known for cars, it’s also an excellent travel TV show to watch.

The famous trio used to present Top Gear for BBC. In 2015, BBC didn’t renew Jeremy Clarkson’s contract.

At this point, his friends decided to follow him and they signed a contract with Amazon Prime . The Grand Tour was born!

On the Grand Tour, Clarkson, Hammond and May embark the most incredible vehicles and set off to explore some of the most beautiful countries in the world!

They visit some famous places but also adventure themselves in very remote, off-the-beaten-path, locations. This includes Madagascar, Morocco, Namibia, Italy and many more!

The Grand Tour is available on Amazon Prime . There are several seasons and some specials!

Click here to watch The Grand Tour.

16. Amazing Race

best travel shows on bbc iplayer

The Amazing Race is an American reality TV show. I’ve watched every season of the French equivalent, Pekin Express.

As much as I would love to talk about this show, I appreciate that watching a show in french might not be of your liking!

But it’s ok because the Amazing Race is pretty much the same thing. There is an American and Canadian version.

The concept is simple. There are several teams of two racing around the world. In each episode, they have to go to a certain destination with no money.

Therefore their only option is to hitchhike and get locals to accommodate them for free.

Along the way, other missions are given to them. These can be hikes, riding… all sorts of things.

It’s the perfect show to discover many countries in a different way. The Amazing Race has it all: competition, culture, landscapes, fun… A must see!

And there are over 30 seasons available so plenty to binge-watch!

Click here to watch the Amazing Race.

17. Travel Man

If you are looking for another funny British travel show, Travel Man is for you!

In this channel 4 show, the host Richard Ayoade explores all major cities around the world. The goal? Visiting as many tourist spots in the minimum amount of time.

When I say that, don’t get me wrong. He is very well organised and makes sure to go on a guided tour most of the time.

This means he actually embeds himself very well in the culture of the place he is visiting.

But where loads of travel shows focus on hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations, Travel Man does the opposite. He goes for the most famous landmarks!

And it’s a good thing because even though these places are touristy, they are famous for a reason!

Richard Ayoade is a very funny man and will make you laugh out loud quite a few times!

Somehow, he always does his best not to enjoy himself which makes the whole show absolutely hilarious!

This show is perfect if you are planning city breaks or are into architecture.

If you are an adventure and after nature discovery, it won’t be what you are looking for.

She is also well known for her travel documentaries.

This one is very similar to Jack Whitehall Travels with my father. On paper at least.

In this case, the dad is the celebrity. Bradley Walsh is a famous British comedian and presenter. If he never particularly wanted to travel, his 21-year old son, Barney, decided otherwise!

Together they go on a road trip in America in an RV. The series started in 2019 and can be watched on Amazon . There are 2 seasons, 10 episodes in total.

In this case, they don’t go for a budget-travel version. They keep their comfort but try very unexpected activities in the States.

It’s more about the contact with the locals which is quite interesting.

As you would expect from the Walsh’s, it’s also very funny!

They go from the Florida Keys up to Georgia. So if you are interested in knowing more about Florida and the east coast states, this one’s for you!

You can watch this amazing show on  ITV (eligible for a free trial as well!).

Basically, at the beginning of the episode, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (who created the show) send Karl abroad with instructions. They put together a bucket list and he has to do everything.

It’s so funny! I promise, this British show will crack you up!

The thing that makes it so entertaining is the fact that Karl Pilkington has no interest in travelling and ends up doing all these things while the other two stay in the UK!

If you want to have a good laugh, An Idiot Abroad is the way to go!

The best series on BBC iPlayer worth watching right now

Image may contain Jodie Comer Sandra Oh Face Head Person Photography Portrait Purple and Adult

BBC iPlayer is about to get a lot better. The corporation has been given permission by Ofcom – the broadcasting watchdog – to keep shows available online for up to a year instead of just 30 days after they air.

It means viewers will get longer to enjoy hits such as Bodyguard and Killing Eve if they return for future series – although the BBC will have to negotiate longer rights deals with some of the independent production companies that it works with.

Until then, however, there are loads of treasures available in the iPlayer archives to enjoy.

We’ve compiled some of the strongest options the BBC has to offer, ranging from Phoebe Waller-Bridge blockbusters to lesser-known gems. That said, if nothing captures your imagination, try Netflix: here are our picks of the best documentaries on Netflix , the best films on Netflix UK and the best TV series on Netflix .

Sons of Anarchy followed the hijinx of an outlaw biker gang based in a fictional town in California’s Central Valley. The show, which concluded in 2014, was a massive critical and commercial success, running for six seasons. Much like Better Call Saul , Mayans MC takes place in the same fictional universe as Sons of Anarchy , following the Sons' rival gang – the Mayans Motorcycle Club.

Gervais plays Andy Millman, an unhappy character similar to David Brent, who works as an actor but can only get parts as an extra. The show usually introduces a new massive celebrity each episode, like David Bowie, Orlando Bloom and Daniel Radcliffe, who play bizarre, gross parodies of themselves.

The 50 best BBC iPlayer TV shows and series

The bbc’s streaming service is a treasure trove of new and classic drama, comedy and documentaries.

Detectorists, Boat Story, Louis Theroux

T here are so many streaming services these days competing for our business that it is sometimes easy to forget what a goldmine of television is available on BBC iPlayer at no extra cost.

Although once a relatively short-term repository of the latest broadcast shows for catch-up, the streaming service has over the past few years grown into a seriously impressive archive of the best of the BBC past and present.

Although not every classic BBC drama and comedy is available on iPlayer (for many you’ll need to stump up for a BritBox/ ITVX Premium membership) there’s still plenty of great box sets to choose from as well as a good number of hidden gems to be discovered.

What to watch on the BBC's 100 year anniversary

Jack Needham

It was more than one hundred years ago that BBC made its first broadcast, with the words “2LO, Marconi House, London, calling” emenating on the radio waves at 5.33 PM on 14 November 1922. Things have moved on a bit since the days of crackly AM radio, so here’s our guide to the best shows on BBC iPlayer.

Over the decades the BBC has brought us everything from Del Boy to David Attenborough. There have been laughs ( Guy Goma ). There have been tears (the Euro 2020 final, but it’s too soon to talk about that). We’ve witnessed humans enter space, lizards escape snake attacks, the rise of Ceefax and the fall of Barry from EastEnders , all on the BBC.

Today, the BBC lives on iPlayer. And while it’s far from an exhaustive list, we toast 100 years of the Beeb with our picks of the best shows on BBC iPlayer right now.

OJ: Made in America

BBC Four’s Storyville series is a goldmine of incredible documentaries, but none of them can compete with the Oscar-winning OJ: Made in America – all 7.5 hours of it.

If you can’t spare an entire working day to watch it in one go, don’t worry, because it’s split into much more manageable 90-minute chunks on iPlayer. Each one examines a different part of OJ Simpson’s life, from his childhood growing up in San Francisco to his more recent, less well-known run-ins with the law, but it’s also about much more than that: power, celebrity, the media, justice, and, most of all, America’s problem with race.

How To with John Wilson

John Wilson films absolutely everything. From the mundane to the miraculous, he compiles his self-shot footage into 25ish-minute visual essays on various everyday themes, whether that’s making small talk or investing in property.

While that makes them sound painfully pretentious, they never take you where you think they will, and each one is packed with quirky metaphors and visual gags that, when combined with Wilson’s nerdy narration, result in a genuinely unique show that comes across like a collaboration between Adam Curtis and Louis Theroux.

Children: they’re like adults, with infinitely worse taste in television. But if you’re a parent driven to despair by the horrors you have to sit through,  Hey Duggee  has since 2014 been an oasis of amazingness.

The set-up is generic: anthropomorphic animals at a clubhouse learn new things.  Yawn . But novel visuals, superb scripts peppered with adult-pleasing in-jokes and subversion, and narrator Alexander Armstrong chewing his way through the scenery all make for a kid’s show that you’ll sneak episodes of long after your nippers are tucked up in bed.

Now, Squirrels, let’s all sing along!

Stick stick stick stick , stick stick stick stick, stick stick stick stick, sticky sticky stick stick!

Killing Eve

This darkly comedic murder drama (yes, really) follows the titular Eve as a security operative for MI5. Taking a little too much interest with the assassin in an ongoing investigation, it takes us on a journey of fascination, self-discovery, and lots of bloody killings. Murders thrill, twists actually surprise, and you’ll gain a deeper appreciation of what makes people tick. Perfect casting, dynamic storytelling, and a shake-up in the genre make this binger a must-watch.

What list of the Beeb’s shows could be complete without its Sci-Fi diamond. Creeping up on 60 years, the show’s been around forever – and fans love it. With different actors getting the chance to take a crack at the titular time-traveller (well, The Doctor, not Doctor Who ), the show constantly changes and evolves.

Going through wibbly-wobbly time-wimey space adventures, each episode brings a battle, monsters that’ll get you behind the couch, and a touch of warmth. While recent seasons haven’t lived up to the show, Doctor Who is a must-see for sci-fi fans across its 800-odd episodes.

The original version of the BBC’s car show is a goldmine of motor knowledge, sark, and wit. Each hour-long episode brought the latest in car news through the charming humour of Clarkson, May, and Hammond. Car reviews, track races, and some of the most out-of-the-box car challenges feature in each episode of the show.

Blurring the lines between news, consumer telly, and a comedy, the series stands out for the three presenters more so than the sets of wheels they’re sitting behind. Perfect for some light-hearted viewing, the 22 series of the original show must not be missed.

Not Going Out

Not Going Out is one of the Beeb’s long-running comedy shows. With Lee Mack playing a fictional version of himself, the series follows him navigate through life, relationships, and family drama.

It’s cheeky, heart-warming, and filled with enough clever one-liners to fill the Thames. Filled with a tremendously funny cast and enough audience laughter to fill a sound-stage, the cheeky series is one to catch-up on at any time.

What We Do in the Shadows

Loosely based on the movie with the same name, What We Do in the Shadows is a dark comedy from the BBC and FX looking at vampires struggling to adapt in the modern day.

Forget all the cheese you’d usually associate with vampire shows, as What We Do in the Shadows has none of that. Rather, it’s a mockumentary comedy filled with the struggles of a group of vampires. Starring Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, and Natasia Demetriou as the vampiric cast, the show could make even the undead laugh at the clever lines and absurdity of the entire premise.

Watch What We Do in the Shadows on iPlayer

BBC and Prime Video’s collaboration on this dark comedy can only be described as a televised masterpiece. Written and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this clever comedy is a televised version of a one-woman stage show.

The series follows the titular character navigating her way through bizarre family relationships, tough emotions, utterly bizarre situations, love, and ultimately, self-acceptance. Fleabag creates relatable characters through a show that’s so true-to-life that it’ll feel like a slap across the face (the good kind, naturally). It’s a stop-what-you’re-doing-and-go-watch-it kind of show – off you go.

Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing

There’s a certain genre of TV show that the BBC has long perfected. It usually involves a former politician, public figure or comedian doing an activity in a place . The premises are usually very simple. Does Michael Portillo enjoy trains? What if Romesh Ranganathan was in Romania? Where can we send Ed Balls now?

Few TV shows fulfil the need for wholesome celebrity action than Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing . The show sees Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse pondering life over lines cast into quaint countryside settings. There are laughs, mostly from Mortimer falling over, but also lessons to learn in how to enjoy life from two people who’ve lived it well.

Watch Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing on iPlayer

Storyville showcases the best in international documentaries that shine a light on untold stories from around the world. On iPlayer, the documentaries featured are ever-changing but always enthralling to watch. The once featured The Great Hip Hop Hoax highlighted how two Scottish friends deceived their way to a record deal by pretending to be American rappers. Orion: The Man Who Would Be King tells the tale of a man who masqueraded as Elvis back from the grave, and found great success doing it.  There are stories of crime, capitalism, controversy and Evel Knievel. Many will simply have you shaking your head in disbelief. Whatever emotion you want from your evening, it’s there on Storyville .

The Traitors

Claudia Winkleman and her fringe take a break from Strictly Come Dancing to present this British take on an international reality TV phenomenon that sprang from The Netherlands. It locks 22 players in a castle and forces them to play a version of the party game Mafia, with a small group of contestants working to bump off the others while remainin undetected. There’s a grand prize at the end of it all, ridiculous tasks for the contestants to do, and some extremely camp scenes of voting around a round table that make it a nail-biting watch.

Watch The Traitors on iPlayer

Digging for Britain

There have been 11 series of this show, in which anatomist and professor Alice Roberts yomps around the country wearing a selection of excellent jewellery while talking to archaeologists about what they’re doing and what they’ve found, and it’s never less than fascinating. Weird Roman dodecahedrons that no one understands! Skeletons in unusual places! Gold dredged up from a river! Bits of old brown stuff that make men with beards very excited!

If you liked Channel 4’s Time Team you’ll be right at home, as not only are a few of the same faces present, but the general vibe of glee at new discoveries is spot on.

The production team behind the documentary worked in close contact with Sarah’s parents in the hope that the documentary would bring increased focus on women’s safety and abuse of power by police and other positions of authority.

Viewers see the crime unfold through astonishing CCTV and police body-cam footage, media coverage and archived police interviews with Couzens upon his arrest and in police custody, along with interviews from the Senior Investigating Officer from Sarah's case, the Prosecuting Barrister and Sarah’s local MP, many of whom are speaking on camera for the first time.

We meet rescued orphaned elephants in Kenya, join ocean patrols off the coast of Gabon fighting to save endangered sharks, and witness wildlife teams saving animals in the shrinking forests of the Amazon — but can we find a way to use natural energy from wind, sun and waves to replace the CO2 emissions that humans are endangering our world with?

Ten years after Amy Winehouse's death in 2011, Reclaiming Amy, first screened in 2021, offered her friends and family the opportunity to present their sides of the story. It's an emotional documentary that presents fresh insights and new stories from Amy's parents.

We're only in April, but so far we've been treated to many a new series on BBC iPlayer this year.

After the surprise ending of beloved cosy crime drama Death in Paradise , fans of the series can get stuck into the current second season of spin-off Beyond Paradise .

Starring Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman, he's tackling all kinds of weird and wonderful cases in Shipton Abbott – as well as his own fair share of personal and professional problems.

If you're looking for something a little grittier, perhaps The Gone will be right up your street. Recently acquired by the BBC, since airing on BBC Four last month, it's the show everyone has been talking about.

Led by Grey's Anatomy alum Richard Flood as Irish detective Theo Richter and Acushla-Tara Kupe as New Zealand detective Diana Huia, the pair investigate the disappearance of a young Irish couple who vanish from a rural New Zealand town.

There are plenty of twists and turns in this one, and we'd expect no less from a small town drama - and with plans in the pipeline for season 2 , there's no better time than now to get acquainted with the show.

Aside from that, we've also got the second seasons of both Irish character-driven crime drama Kin and Traces , which stars Molly Windsor, Laura Fraser and Jennifer Spence.

This time around, they're looking into a series of bombings in Dundee, while Emma's on-off love interest, the troubled Daniel, is played by Line of Duty's Martin Compston .

If you're looking for something that'll surely make you laugh, new series Boarders will be just the tonic.

More than well worth a watch, the comedy follows five Black students who are given scholarships to enter St Gilbert's, a prestigious sixth form that is in serious crisis control after a controversial video of their students goes viral.

The episodes deal with themes like racism and stereotyping, but the series doesn't feel heavy at all, delivering some seriously funny lines that will stick with you after watching.

But of course, there's plenty more to get stuck into on the platform that aren't just the latest releases. Lest we forget standout hits like Happy Valley , true crime drama The Gold , dark mystery series Wolf , Vigil season 2 or action-thriller Boat Story , to name a few.

If you fancy watching any of these right now, they're available at the click of a button on BBC iPlayer , with plenty more box sets of classic series and iconic modern shows available to binge your way through.

We've put together a list of all the best series available right now, so you can find something to suit you without all that endless scrolling, whether you're a thriller fan or are more into sci-fi or period dramas.

Read on for our top BBC drama picks.

An Irish couple vanish from a small New Zealand town and Irish detective Theo Richter teams up with Kiwi officer Diana Huia to find them. Thriller, starring Richard Flood and Acushla-Tara Kupe

Why watch The Gone?:

Shaking up the regular format of many of the crime dramas we know and love, The Gone has its feet in both Ireland and New Zealand as we follow detectives from each country who are determined to get to the bottom of a missing couple's case.

Ronan Garvey (Simon Mead) and Sinead Martin (Rachel Morgan) seemingly vanish from a remote town in New Zealand, and that's where Dublin detective Theo Richer (Richard Flood) comes in. Despite resigning from the Garda after two decades of service, Theo is called in to help with the case - and when he travels to the other side of the world, he's faced with a small town that holds its own dark secrets. Surely, nobody just disappears without a trace... or can they? – Morgan Cormack

Drama set in the aftermath of a violent uprising in Port Talbot, and following a family forced to flee the ensuing violence. Directed by and starring Michael Sheen

Why watch The Way?:

This new drama doesn’t quite fit into your archetypal genre boxes, but is an ambitious series that forces you to take notice of its messaging. Across the three episodes, we see how the civil uprising in Port Talbot starts to envelop the Driscoll family in different ways. From a father who doesn’t initially want to be involved due to historical ties to a son whose previous numb state of mind is finally fired up after the unrest, we see how the series of events changes all their lives.

A directorial debut from Michael Sheen, who is otherwise known for his roles in Staged and Good Omens, the new series is also written by James Graham (Sherwood) and documentarian Adam Curtis. – Morgan Cormack

Five talented black teenagers receive scholarships to a prestigious boarding school only to discover they're only there to improve the school's image after a problematic scandal. Comedy series starring Derek Riddell and Harry Gilby

Why watch Boarders?:

While this new series is set in a sixth form and framed around a cohort of students, this is a show that is well worth watching for everyone. We follow Jaheim (Josh Tedeku), Leah (Jodie Campbell), Toby (Sekou Diaby), Femi (Aruna Jalloh) and Omar (Myles Kamwendo) as they enter the prestigious and otherworldly universe of St Gilbert’s, a private boarding school that instantly makes them feel othered.

The people are snobby, the attitudes are ignorant and the undertones are racist, but we see how St Gilbert’s life affects all our boarders, while also exploring their general search for identity. A standout storyline comes in Leah, who is not only trying to get the school to take down an offensive painting, but also has hilarious and awkward escapades worthy of being in Sex Education as well as learning a thing or two about what genuine allyship means. More than anything, though, this series will genuinely make you laugh. – Morgan Cormack

Drama about a fictional Dublin crime family embroiled in gangland war, starring Aidan Gillen and Clare Dunne

Why watch Kin?:

Kin follows a Dublin crime family facing a seemingly impossible gangland war as their reserves and resources hit an all-time low. Will the importance of family triumph over the tide of betrayal and sin?

The series stars beloved actors such as Daredevil star Charlie Cox as recently-released Skinner family sibling Michael and Game of Thrones actor Aidan Gillen as the struggling Frank.

The drama boasts a bevvy of Irish talent across the board – with the rest of the cast rounded out by the likes of Peaky Blinders star Emmett Scanlan, The Tudors actress Maria Doyle Kennedy, and the illustrious Ciaran Hinds. Unmissable. – Lewis Knight

Two hard-up strangers stumble across a haul of cocaine on a shipwrecked boat. After agreeing to sell it and split the cash, they become entangled with police, masked hitmen and a sharp-suited gangster known as 'The Tailor'.

Why watch Boat Story?:

If you’re a fan of The Tourist, you’ll likely be a fan of this six-part drama which comes from the Williams brothers – who are at the helm of both. The drama is led by Daisy Haggard ( Back to Life ) and Paterson Joseph (Peep Show) who find themselves at the centre of a quickly unravelling chain of criminal events when a major stash of cocaine is washed up in their seaside town and they take it.

Hoping to sell it on for some serious cash, the pair soon find out that it’s not that easy to penetrate the world of organised crime and soon find themselves being hunted by the very people who want their precious cargo back. Not your typical BBC drama, this one is peppered with dark humour and plenty of tension that’ll keep you hooked. – Morgan Cormack

Silent Witness

Why watch silent witness:.

Silent Witness is one of the longest-running police procedurals in the UK, and for good reason. Now in its 27th season and with Emilia Fox at the helm as Dr Nikki Alexander, the series has featured a revolving cohort of various detectives, forensic pathologists and investigators all dedicated to solving grisly cases that seem more complicated than the last. It’s genuinely astounding that the show hasn’t burnt out of ideas yet, but somehow, every season is filled with surprisingly confounding mysteries. Whether it’s unearthing the crimes of convicted serial killers or the assassination of a US diplomat, there’s a distinct variety in every single case.

And if you like a side of gore with your “whodunnits”, you’re in for a bloody treat. There’s severed limbs, internal organs and autopsies galore. And yet, it never feels over the top. If anything, it still feels remarkably grounded and timely. Although there’s been plenty of cast members over the years, and a stand-out performance comes from Liz Carr as Clarissa Mullery – a forensic examiner who happens to be a wheelchair user. Silent Witness didn’t just relegate her to a helpful member of the supporting cast, instead she was constantly a key part of the investigation, often providing answers where others stumble. Does the format occasionally get a little repetitive? Of course, but that makes its stories no less entertaining. – Eammon Jacobs/Morgan Cormack

Crime drama following a detective investigating military murders. Starring Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie

Why watch Vigil?:

The thrilling crime drama from World Productions returns for its second run with stars Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie.

The first outing of the blockbuster show followed murderous actions in the isolated environment of a submarine, leading Amy Silva (Jones) on a gripping race against time to discover the truth, while her on-off lover Kirsten Longacre (Leslie) grappled with their relationship difficulties whilst also pursuing avenues in the investigation.

The second run moves the action from Scotland to a fictional Middle Eastern country with which the UK has been developing a military drone programme. Topical and tense, this is BBC thrilling drama at its very finest. – Lewis Knight

A local police team investigate crimes within the close knit island community of Shetland.

Why watch Shetland?:

Can Shetland survive post-Jimmy Perez? Well, based on this first case to feature his successor Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen, above), I’d say yes. She very quickly forges a strong partnership with show stalwart Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) that feels like Scott and Bailey in scarves and sweaters. But let’s not forget that this is a series that’s always been as much about the scenery as its central character — and for those wanting more of those wild and windswept landscapes, all previous Douglas Henshall-starring episodes are available now. – David Brown

The Woman in the Wall

Lorna Brady wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house with no idea who the dead woman is. She doubts herself, because she has long suffered from extreme bouts of sleepwalking.

Why watch The Woman in the Wall?:

Persistent sleepwalker Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house. So, might she be responsible for the woman’s demise? And could Lorna also be linked to another case of untimely death being investigated by Dublin-based Detective Colman Akande (Daryl McCormack)?

Those are the central questions that run through this woozy and unsettling six-part thriller. But also hanging over it like a heavy shroud is the feeling of guilt, both on a personal and institutional scale, with Lorna’s deep-rooted trauma tied to Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries, the details of which are gradually shaded in for those unaware of this macabre scandal.

Crime thriller based on Mo Hayder's novels about DI Jack Caffery, starring Ukweli Roach and Juliet Stevenson.

Why watch Wolf?:

This thriller, based on the Jack Caffery novel by Mo Hayder, comes from Steven Moffat’s production company Hartswood films and it shows – there are people held against their will and two parallel timelines, just like Inside Man , and a chilling figure in a gas mask, just like Doctor Who’s The Empty Child.

However, other than those surface-level aspects, Wolf is a truly unique drama, especially in its tone. The series jumps between genres, featuring elements of horror, thriller, crime drama and even comedy to tell its story of a detective haunted by his past and a family being terrorised, unaware as to why.

Ukweli Roach is phenomenal as detective Jack, making sure his storyline is just as compelling as the other, while Sacha Dhawan and Iwan Rheon are clearly having huge fun as the mysterious captors of a wealthy family. – James Hibbs

Monarch of the Glen

Light-hearted Scottish drama following the life of Archie MacDonald, a young restaurateur called back to his childhood home of Glenbogle where he is told he is the new Laird of Glenbogle.

Why watch Monarch of the Glen?:

Back in the early 2000s, millions of viewers paid Sunday-evening visits to the picturesque Glenbogle estate. Almost 25 years on, this easy-going drama about a young laird is now online, so it’s possible to head to the Highlands whenever you like.

It remains escapist fare with the bonus of a twinkly-eyed role for Richard Briers. And those seeking further Scottish misadventures can find them in the Robert Carlyle-starring Hamish Macbeth, which is also part of the BBC comedy drama box sets that have been rescued from the archives.

Magpie Murders

Mystery adapted from Anthony Horowitz's novel about an editor, who gets drawn into a web of intrigue and murder when she receives an unfinished manuscript. Starring Lesley Manville.

Why watch Magpie Murders?:

Anthony Horowitz knows the rules of the whodunnit better than most, and in this lovely Russian doll of a mystery he pulls those elements inside out to deliver a cracking story. Two, in fact. The first is set in the present as editor Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) reads the latest typescript by author Alan Conway. But then, Conway’s tale – a 1950s-set story featuring his sleuth Atticus Pünd (Tim McMullan) – is brought to life. As both narratives start to merge, Pünd makes his presence felt in Susan’s life…

Drama series inspired by true events surrounding the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery, and the remarkable story that followed.

Why watch The Gold?:

After Happy Valley came to an end, fans were bereft, unsure where they would next see a crime drama of its pedigree in the near future. Then came The Gold.

Don’t get me wrong, the two are totally different beasts, in many ways they could not be more different. Where Happy Valley was a deeply character-based story, this was all about themes, about its exploration of Britain’s class-system in the ’80s.

The series dramatises the extraordinary true story of the Brink’s Mat robbery, featuring real-life figures alongside fictional and composite characters. It’s a complex, twisting narrative, which manages to deftly explain an elaborate situation and features some exceptional performances from the likes of Jack Lowden and Hugh Bonneville – James Hibbs

The Sixth Commandment

Fact-based crime drama exploring the story of retired teacher Peter Farquhar, and the fatal relationship that developed with a charismatic student. With Éanna Hardwicke

Why watch The Sixth Commandment?:

Screenwriter Sarah Phelps has adapted plenty of Agatha Christie works, and at the heart of this tragic true story she’s moulded into a four-part drama is a real-life antagonist as calculating and callous as any Christie killer. The pre-titles sequence states this is in memory of Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin. The deaths of these elderly neighbours, in 2015 and 2017 respectively, were not initially thought to be suspicious. But one man was suspiciously close to both.

Timothy Spall conjures sympathy in spades as the quiet, fragile Peter – a well-respected scholar who lives a solitary and deeply religious life that only begins unravelling once he meets new student Ben (Eanna Hardwicke, exuding cold charm). Emotionally vulnerable, Peter is overwhelmed as the two embark on a relationship. But soon, Peter is having dizzy spells and hallucinating. Unbeknown to the host, he’s welcomed a parasite into his home. – Frances Taylor

Best Interests

Drama, starring Sharon Horgan and Michael Sheen as a couple driven apart over the decision whether to stop care for their daughter's deteriorating health

Why watch Best Interests?:

Writer Jack Thorne is adept at tackling emotive subjects with depth and authenticity, creating stories that shine a powerful light into dark – and often uncomfortable – corners. Following the likes of National Treasure, Kiri and Help, his latest is this considered, devastating four-parter starring an outstanding Sharon Horgan and Michael Sheen.

Nicci (Horgan) and Andrew (Sheen) are parents to Marnie (Niamh Moriarty), who has a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy. When her already-deteriorating health falls further, it prompts doctors to say that her care should be withdrawn. Her parents vehemently disagree, and the case ends up going to court.

Although there are some superfluous subplots along the way, the final episode’s denouement is as commanding, moving and unbearable as television can get. – Frances Taylor

The Gallows Pole

Shane Meadows drama, based on the book by Benjamin Myers, inspired by the rise of the Cragg Vale Coiners, a gang of counterfeiters in 18th-century Yorkshire. David Hartley returns to his family's moor-top dwelling after seven years in Birmingham. The area has declined in the time he has been away and while he is broken physically, he now has cash, and is determined to change his community for the better. Starring Michael Socha, Thomas Turgoose and Sophie McShera

Why watch The Gallows Pole?:

Those who have followed the career of director Shane Meadows will recognise many of his hallmarks here. There’s the semi-improvised dialogue and that familiar focus on the left-behinds in society. But what’s entirely new is the setting – 18th century Yorkshire, a time when the weavers who feature in this wild true-life story are facing obsolescence thanks to the merciless force of the Industrial Revolution. What follows is a tale of resistance and forgery, masterminded by the mysterious David Hartley (the magnetic Michael Socha), who’s home for the first time in seven years with a stab wound in his gut and a dark secret in his soul. – David Brown

Crime drama, starring Nicola Walker as DI Annika Strandhed, who has returned to Glasgow to head up the Marine Homicide Unit, where she is tasked with solving puzzling crimes and unexplained murders that wash up in Scotland's waters

Why watch Annika?:

The to-camera confidences of DI Annika Strandhed (Nicola Walker) aren’t to everybody’s taste, but this dark crime drama, based on Nick Walker’s Radio 4 drama, has much to commend it. There’s a strong cast that includes Paul McGann and Kate Dickie, while Walker is superb as the unconventional single parent who comes over from Norway to head Scotland’s Marine Homicide Unit. She’s sharp, has a dry sense of humour and – unlike your typical Scandi-noir detective – uses literary and historical allusions to solve crimes. A second series is coming later this year. – Jane Rackham

"Luther" is a psychological crime drama starring Idris Elba ("The Wire") as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. In the first programme, Luther, back from suspension, must find the person responsible for a double murder. The format of the show was inspired by American crime drama "Columbo" in that viewers are shown the identity of the criminals but do not know how they will be caught. The series sees a welcome return to the small screen of Paul McGann as Mark North, and also stars Warren Brown as DS Justin Ripley. It premiered on BBC One in 2010.

Why watch Luther?:

Idris Elba may be a global movie star these days, but he still found time to film five series of this smash-hit BBC One show. Luther sees Elba as the dedicated, obsessive and occasionally violent DCI John Luther, a genius murder detective whose brilliant mind is not immune to the darkness of his job. The series starts with him unable to imprison psychopath and murderer Alice Morgan, leading the two to solve crimes together while he fights his own terrible demons.

Luther has been a smash hit for the BBC over the last decade, with Elba repeatedly garnering rave reviews every time a new season premiered, and the dark tone credited with giving the show more weight and gravitas than most police procedurals. Critical praise has been unanimous – indeed the biggest criticism has been the length of the show, with only twenty-one episodes produced over five seasons.

Elba is the powerhouse of this series, but he’s joined by some fine company. His Dark Material’s Ruth Wilson makes a particularly memorable turn as psychopathic nemesis and companion Alice Morgan, with The Death of Stalin’s Dermot Crawley as the razor-sharp DCI Martin Schenk and comedian Michael Smiley as “Deadhead” Benny Silver. – Daniel Furn

Happy Valley

Crime drama by Sally Wainwright, with Sarah Lancashire as a police sergeant in the Yorkshire valleys battling her own demons when she becomes involved in the hunt for a kidnapped girl.

Why watch Happy Valley?:

A series that needs no introduction, but we’ll give it one anyway.

Happy Valley stars Sarah Lancashire as Yorkshire police sergeant Catherine Cawood. When we meet her in season 1, she’s investigating former prisoner Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), whom she believes is responsible for the death of her daughter. The rivalry between these two incredible characters continues for two more outings, the last of which was released earlier this year and brought the story to a dramatic conclusion.

Indeed, Happy Valley season 3 was hailed as some of the best British television ever made, adding yet more prestige to the career of screenwriter Sally Wainwright – also known for Last Tango in Halifax and Gentleman Jack.

If you somehow missed its original run, do yourself a favour and watch now.

Blue Lights

Drama following three new recruits to Belfast's police force, where being a frontline response cop comes with unique pressures and dangers. Starring Martin McCann, Sian Brooke and Katherine Devlin

Why watch Blue Lights?:

In what must have been the easiest commissioning decision of the year, the BBC has ordered a second series of this bracing Belfast-set procedural. And no wonder, as this first run is an admirably unvarnished take on life in the police force. It also feels, thanks to its febrile location, as though the daily patrols of officers can go horribly awry in an instant – a factor that keeps viewers on their toes during the tense interactions between those in unform (Richard Dormer and Sian Brooke, above centre, being two notable standouts) and the career criminals in their sights.

Gossip Girl

Revival of the US drama centring on a new generation of teenagers at a New York private school whose lives are dominated by social media. Starring Blake Lively and Leighton Meester

Why watch Gossip Girl?:

BBC iPlayer has both versions of Gossip Girl, labelled according to their original years of broadcast: the influential 2007-12 series about overprivileged, hugely unlikeable teens in New York, and the two-series reboot, which debuted in 2021. The new show still features Kristin Bell in a narrating role as the titular, all-seeing blabbermouth, but now instead of her reading a blog by an unknown student at a Manhattan private school, “Gossip Girl” is an Instagram account run by a teacher. In season two, an uneasy pact between the snitch and the school’s top influencer soon cracks.

Search Party

Dory's college acquaintance Chantal goes missing and she makes it her personal mission to find her. Black comedy, starring Alia Shawkat and John Reynolds

Why watch Search Party?:

A recent acquisition from HBO Max, Search Party went down a storm in the United States for its biting portrayal of millennial culture. The story kicks off as listless 20-something Dory (Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat) takes it upon herself to track down an acquaintance from her college years, who has recently been declared missing.

Along for the ride is oblivious boyfriend Drew (John Reynolds) and egotistical friends Elliot (John Early) and Portia (Meredith Hagner). Together, the gang get to the bottom of the perplexing mystery – but in doing so, land themselves in even greater danger.

Search Party delivers on gripping drama – not least through a powerhouse performance from Shawkat – but also delights with its witty satire on the vapid trends of the social media generation. Perfect for those who like a blend of light and dark storytelling.

His Dark Materials

Epic fantasy adventure based on Phillip Pullman's acclaimed novels, with Dafne Keen as heroic protagonist Lyra.

Why watch His Dark Materials?:

Oh His Dark Materials , you brilliant piece of fantasy you. Based on the bestselling books by Phillip Pullman the series follows 13-year old Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) who embarks on a dangerous journey through a parallel world to uncover the mystery surrounding Dust and how it affects different dimensions in the universe. It’s a riveting adventure that sweeps audiences up along with Lyra in a grand storyline that never compromises its scale to fit the small screen. The series from writer Jack Thorne struck the perfect blend between realism and fantasy, as Lyra’s world feels familiar to our own but also is vastly different.

And while the first season of His Dark Materials felt a little constricted by setting up all these different characters and plot points about parallel worlds, the second season was so much fun as the cosmic stakes got even bigger. Truthfully, this works so much better than the misaligned cinematic adaptation from 2007. It’s a testament to the stellar cast that all the animalistic Daemons don’t come across as silly or stupid, they’re believable and enthralling. Also what a cast! It boasts the likes of James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda in supporting roles. The final season is streaming now. – Eammon Jacobs

The North Water

Hull in 1859, and Irish army surgeon Patrick Sumner boards the whaling ship Volunteer as its surgeon. Drama, starring Jack O'Connell and Stephen Graham.

Why watch The North Water?:

Colin Farrell is currently working the awards circuit after a stellar year, which saw him give memorable performances in The Batman and The Banshees of Inisherin . It’s a shame that his bleak period drama The North Water, which debuted towards the end of 2021, has comparatively been overlooked.

Set in the 1800s, the show follows the crew of a whaling expedition that goes awry, focusing primarily on the barbaric Henry Drax (Farrell) and traumatised doctor Patrick Sumner (Jack O’Connell). It’s a brutal tale of survival, which is certainly not for the faint of heart.

Remarkably, the cast and crew of The North Water actually travelled to the Arctic Circle to film the series – and it shows! No green screen or studio lot could substitute for the astonishing scenery on display, which only adds to the sense of gritty realism in this brilliant drama.

Race Across The World fans shocked after BBC scraps part they ‘can’t stand’

Race Across The World contestant covering his mouth in shock

Race Across The World viewers have been left in shock after noticing a massive change that’s been made to the BBC series.

Thankfully for plenty of fans, some of them actually ‘couldn’t stand’ the element of the show anyway… so all’s well that ends well!

The competitors on the fourth season of the programme have set off on their journeys across Eastern Asia to try and bag the top prize at the end, following stringent rules every step of the way.

During the latest episode, several viewers noticed that a typical part of the show had been scrapped – the inclusion of recaps or previews.

TV critic Scott Bryan wrote on X: ‘Interesting that #RaceAcrossTheWorld doesn’t have a preview or recap.

‘Then again, with so many people watching this show on streaming and catchup, a lot of them will binge the ep and won’t need it anyway.’

Responding to him, an X user called Simon added: ‘I’ve never understood the need for a recap. Unless it’s to foreground something you might have forgotten about that will suddenly become important. Less of an issue on a short series with a simple premise.’

Josh agreed, saying that in his opinion, it was never necessary and he’s glad that ‘they got straight into it’.

Rebecca remarked that she ‘can’t stand the recaps and previews’, and typically skips them altogether when they are included on programmes.

Don’t like those shows that show u what’s coming up on the show I’m about to sit and watch it I don’t need to see hats going to happen — Gary (@GaryS31571) April 17, 2024

I thought that too – prefer they get straight into it ! — Amisha (@amisha1982) April 17, 2024

The lack of a recap or previous on the most recent episode of Race Across The World wasn’t the only topic of conversation that sparked interest among viewers.

Fans were also left in a state of shock when they thought that they’d misheard the name of a particular location in South Korea .

Best friends Alfie and Owen were racing across the East Coast of South Korea on the BBC series, attempting to reach their second checkpoint Sokcho when they stopped in Samcheok, home of the penis park.

Yep, you read that right.

The best friends had some time to kill for sight-seeing, so opted to visit the famous Haesindang Park, remarking that the penis statues clearly brought tourists ‘from far and wide’.

‘I don’t know how to describe the penis park other than, it’s got a lot of penises,’ Alfie remarked, as he climbed on top of and sat on one of the genitals.

‘What a sight to behold this is,’ Owen replied, as they wished for luck from the legendary park.

Viewers were in hysterics after hearing about the special park, with actor Richard Price writing: ‘Alfie and Owen making memories in that special park in South Korea #topchoice.’

I think the “two tickets to the penis park please ” line should go down in television folklore #RaceAcrossTheWorld — David (@DavidBastin12) April 17, 2024

‘The Penis Park bit in #RaceAcrossTheWorld is already one of the funniest bits of television this year. Easily,’ Alexander added.

David echoed: ‘I think the “two tickets to the penis park please ” line should go down in television folklore.’

‘PENIS PARK??????? WHAT IS GOING ON?!!!!!’ Francesca wrote.

Villagers carved sculptures in some phallic shapes to sustain ‘good luck’ after a legend stated that a fisherman brought back the village’s hope of catching fish after urinating into the sea.

Alfie and Owen are up against two mother-daughter duos, Eugenie and Isabel, and Brydie and Sharon, married couple Stephen and Viv, and brother-sister pair Betty and James.

The teams are racing across 15,000 kilometres in several countries, travelling from Japan to Lombok against the clock, and leaving behind their smartphones, any internet access and bank cards in the hope of winning a £20,000 cash prize.

Race Across The World airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
