Samuel Afari Dartey

Samuel Afari Dartey, CEO of Aqua Safari Group

Samuel Afari Dartey has gradually cemented his place as a household name in the hospitality industry . His love for nature and the desire to have an eco-friendly ecosystem has led him to establish two great eco-resort that has Ghanaians and tourists from all over the world buzzing with glee.

He is one of the entrepreneurs in Ghana, making impact in the hospitality industry

Entrepreneurs in Ghana – Who is Samuel Afari Dartey?

Samuel Afari Dartey grew up from humble beginnings in a Ga community called Ayalolo around the Jamestown locality where he attended Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Primary School. After school, Samuel Afari Dartey would sell pure water, and toffees to help provide for the family. He also polished people’s shoes in Tudu, Accra.

Despite the hustle of selling after school, Samuel Afari Dartey’s academic pursuit wasn’t cut short as he received scholarships throughout his academic endeavour. From the Seventh Day Adventist Church giving him the scholarship to fund his primary education to receiving a scholarship program to pursue his secondary and tertiary education in Cuba. He also received a scholarship to pursue his Master’s program in Germany.

Entrepreneurs in Ghana- How it Started for Samuel Afari Dartey

In 2008, Samuel Afari Dartey took a trip to Ada to explore the breathtaking natural landscape of the environment. During the sightseeing in a boat together with his colleagues, Samuel Afari Dartey noticed a bunch of properties lined up onshore and inquired of the boat captain the persons to which the properties belonged. The boat captain replied by saying the properties belonged to foreigners from such places as Lebanon and Italy. Saddened by the fact that the properties were mainly owned by foreigners except for a few being owned by Ghanaians, Samuel Afari Dartey uttered the words “I will change this” to his colleagues.

In 2009, Samuel Afari Dartey became the CEO of the Forestry Commission before paving way for the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie popularly known as Sir John to take over after his term ended in 2017. During his time as the CEO of the Forestry Commission, Samuel Afari Dartey made the decision to develop the natural landscape of Ada out of which came Aqua Safari in 2013 . Aqua, a Latin word that means “water” and Safari, a combination of the first alphabet of his name Samuel and his surname Afari.

Since its establishment, Aqua Safari has employed over 80% of its direct workforce from the local community of Ada and has become one of Ghana’s best and greatest resorts for Ghanaians and tourists alike.

Following the success of Aqua Safari, last year, Samuel Afari Dartey launched The Safari Valley resort cited in the Eastern Region of Ghana which is home to dozens of species of wildflowers and wildlife with local and exotic animals such as antelopes, zebra’s, and giraffes. More than 90% of the food on the resort will come from the farm where guests will have the chance to pick their food, including their fish from the lake.

Samuel Afari Dartey plans to replicate eco-friendly resorts in every region of the country with Safari Palm Lands in the Western Region and Safari Royal Gardens in the Ashanti region.

Achievements & Awards Aqua Safari has achieved a milestone in its improvement in the hospitality and the forest reserve sector but according to Samuel Afari Dartey he is only “Good” not yet “Great.” In 2015, Aqua Safari won the 2015 Ghana Tourism Awards (GTA) visitor attraction of the year. In 2017, Aqua Safari won the Jumia Travel Traveler’s Choice of the year and the Ghana Tourism Awards three (3) star hotel of the year.

Though Samuel Afari Dartey is appreciative of the awards, his greatest joy and passion is to develop the forest areas in the country and to create a source of livelihood for as many Ghanaians as possible.

Samuel Afari Dartey, the man behind Ghana’s new $25 million Safari resort

history of aqua safari resort

Samuel Afari Dartey is becoming one of the household names in Ghana’s hospitality industry. Since 2015, his investment in the sector has been concentrated on providing eco-friendly resorts for Ghanaian and foreign holidaymakers.

Dartey started with Aqua Safari Resort in the Volta Region of Ghana, a unique venture at the time. Following the success of the resort, he decided to replicate it in other parts of the country. His latest resort,  Safari Valley Resort , located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, is a breath-taker.

Termed the “African Disneyland,” Safari Valley Resort is built in a way to allow visitors to engage with nature. It focuses more on forest resources, wildlife resources, and the ocean and marine environment.

The eco-resort sits on a 500-acre land that provides visitors with modern comfort as it has other facilities such as theatre and arts. It also boasts of caves and lakes. One can enjoy luxury accommodations, spa services, golf and organic meals as well.

Building resorts across Ghana was not easy to conceptualize, Dartey told  Paakwesiasare.biz . “A friend of mine invited me to visit his farm and encouraged me to get into the same enterprise,” the CEO of the Aqua Safari Group said.

“We acquired a few acres and started to develop some rubber plantations but anytime I visited, I thought the place was unique and I knew I had to come up with some idea, an idea that could optimize the use of this beautiful renewable natural resource.”

“I started one business in the hospitality industry already, Aqua safari resort, which was doing extremely well, one of its kind in the country so it wasn’t difficult to conceptualize something that will relate,” he added.

The first phase of the project is currently in operation. It consists of 102 rooms and surrounded by palm trees, lush, green landscapes and infinity pools. According to Dartey, the resort was developed in such a way as not to destroy the environment.

“Because it is an Eco-lodge, we’re planning to put into consideration that we won’t destroy the environment, such that where a tree has to be taken out, we will make sure that four trees replace that particular tree,” he said.

The resort facility is home to dozens of species of wildflowers and wildlife with local and exotic animals such as antelopes, zebra, and giraffes. This environment will enable visitors to “engage with the animals without any form of fear”, Dartey said.

The natural resource economist said he will expand his resort venture to every region of Ghana with Safari Palm Lands in the Western Region and Safari royal gardens soon to hit the Ashanti Region.

Aqua Safari Resort

Hotel, ghana.

Aqua Safari is the answer to an immense demand for high-end accommodation and hang out spots in the coastal area of Ada in the Greater Accra Region, 1 hour outside the city center.

Ada is well known as a place where wealthy Ghanaians come to take a break from the city, do watersports, and build large luxury homes on the water’s edge. In addition, the territory consists of the town of Ada Foah and various fishing communities.

While Ada has a handful of hotels that have been in existence for a number of years, Aqua Safari is the most contemporary, and the plushest.

The hotel is set on the Volta River, before it gives out to the ocean, and the finest feature of the hotel is the common restaurant and bar area, with its long wooden deck, that leads to a jetty perched on the river.

The hotel’s least fine feature happens to be the rooms, which consists of 71 standard and deluxe rooms, and chalets. While they are clean and comfortable, and not offensive to the eye, they are far from stylish. The finishings could certainly be higher quality, and greater attention could have been paid to the small details that infuse a hotel with class and charm.

Aqua Safari does however boast a private beach, with white sands, and come the evenings the whole area is lit up with subtle and romantic floor lighting and lamps, making the resort rather magical.

The hotel offers watersports, such as jet ski, as well as boat rides around the wonderful picturesque surrounding backwaters, making it a popular destination for families.

Aqua Safari also lends itself well to a wedding, as well as conferencing venue.

Disney Has a Resort in Hawaii — and It's Just As Magical As You'd Expect

This Disney resort offers a world of magic without the theme parks.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

Food and Drink

Activities and experiences, family-friendly offerings, accessibility, how to get the most value out of your stay.

David Roark/Disney Destinations

In August 2011, Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, opened in the resort community of Ko Olina on the southwestern shore of Oahu. As a longtime Disney fan and Travel & Leisure ’s resident theme park expert, I’ve been curious about this Hawaiian resort; after all, what would it be like to stay at a Disney resort without rushing off to theme parks each morning and seeing the fireworks every night? I found my answer during a family trip to Aulani this February.

Upon arrival, I spoke to Kama Hopkins, Aulani’s Hawaiian cultural advisor, about the relationship between Disney and Hawaiian culture, and he pointed out one fundamental commonality: “Both are storytellers. Disney is one of the most well-known storytellers there is. But for us, in Polynesia and through the Pacific, we like to say that we were people who didn’t have any written language, so we had to tell stories. We come from storytellers.”

At Aulani, storytelling is integrated into every design aspect, with thoughtfully created touchpoints for visitors to engage with Hawaiian history and culture. The resort has one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary Hawaiian art; a lounge celebrates ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi , or the Hawaiian language; and architectural details, big and small, highlight the history and modern culture.

Immediately upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted with a 360-degree mural that depicts Hawaiian history from ancient to modern times and soaring archways that mimic the design of traditional Hawaiian canoes. The layout of the entire resort is inspired by the ahupuaʻa division of land that typically stretches from the mountains to the ocean, illustrated in water features, landscaping, rock work, and design as you walk from the lobby to the beach. Programming for all ages provides more ways to engage with the local culture; I spoke to youth activities manager Kanoa Kawai, who described the host of Hawaiian language-focused crafts and activities they offered for Hawaiian Language Month (February). “At least if they learn anything, they learn about aloha. They know how to share aloha and love with their family and friends,” said Kawai.

Of course, you can find Mickey and pals (plus some rare characters typically only found at the Asian Disney parks) at character meals and meet-and-greets, Disney music, and Minnie Mouse ears throughout the property, too. Aulani is genuinely packed with fun things to do for all ages, though it’s particularly great for families with young children, and we felt that after three nights, we’d barely scratched the surface of all there is to do and see within the resort.

Here’s our review of Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii.

  • Character meals, meet-and-greets, pool parties, family activities, and a kids club offer Disney fun for all ages.
  • Laniwai, a Disney Spa, offers signature Hawaiian treatments and a supremely relaxing hydrotherapy garden.
  • Fan-favorite Aulani snacks, including Mickey-shaped spam musubi, shave ice, and Dole Whips, are available at dining locations throughout the resort.
  • The KA WA‘A lū‘au celebrates Hawaiian history and culture with singing, dancing, and storytelling in a lush setting.

At Aulani, accommodations are split into two general categories: traditional hotel-style rooms and suites and Disney Vacation Club villas. Hotel-style accommodations include standard two-queen or king rooms and one- and two-bedroom suites. Most of the resort’s accommodations are Disney Vacation Club villas, but don’t worry — you don’t have to be a member to book these rooms (more on that membership program below). One-, two-, and three-bedroom villas include separate bedrooms, full kitchens and dining areas, and a washer and dryer for home-like conveniences, while deluxe studios offer a more traditional hotel feel. We stayed in a one-bedroom villa, and we loved having more than 750 square feet to spread out, a full-size fridge to keep leftovers and snacks in, and a washer and dryer to do some laundry.

No matter what type of room you stay in, you can expect thoughtful, island-inspired designs with natural materials and Hawaiian art and decor. Like the rest of the property, you can find adorable Disney touches throughout the rooms — like a wooden ukelele-playing Mickey lamp — but the design focuses primarily on Hawaiian influences and the natural beauty of the area rather than the cartoon characters you’d find at many Disney theme park hotels. I highly recommend booking an oceanview room with a balcony (request a high floor if you can!) to enjoy the gorgeous nightly sunsets from your room.

Aulani’s dining experiences range from multi-course dinners with sunset ocean views to quick-service Hawaiian poke. And Disney parks fans, take note: you can get the ever-popular Mickey waffles for breakfast at multiple locations, too. AMA‘AMA is an upscale open-air restaurant with a thatched roof and stunning sunset views, offering a four-course prix-fixe dinner featuring Hawaiian flavors and local ingredients. An optional wine pairing is also available. Makahiki is a lively restaurant themed to the Hawaiian celebration of the harvest, and it serves daily character breakfast with a prix-fixe menu featuring tasty dishes, including malasadas (Portuguese sugar donuts), kālua pig omelets, and pancakes with macadamia nut-vanilla sauce.

For dinner (sans characters), guests can pick from fresh salads, steaks, pasta, seafood, and more during a prix-fixe three-course meal. For a more casual dining experience, guests can stop by Off the Hook for breakfast, lunch, or dinner; I loved the ahi poke and crab cake BLT for a tasty poolside bite. The ‘Ōlelo Room serves up coffee and malasadas in the morning and transitions to a cocktail and sushi bar by night in a space that celebrates the Hawaiian language.

Ulu Cafe is a fast-casual spot for all-day dining and snacks; it’s the perfect spot to grab an acai bowl for breakfast, a poke bowl for lunch (I had both the classic and spicy tuna bowls multiple times, and they were delicious), and other grab-and-go items throughout the day. Ulu Cafe is also where you’ll find one of Aulani’s most sought-after snacks: the Mickey-shaped spam musubi. These sell out quickly, so grab one when you see it if you want to try one of the resort’s most popular snacks. (They even make Mickey musubi merch, available at the hotel’s gift shop.) Mama’s Snack Stop is another quick service stand serving classic poolside eats like chicken tenders and coconut shrimp.

And you can’t visit Aulani without getting the iconic Mickey-shaped shave ice from Pāpālua Shave Ice or a fresh fruit Dole Whip sundae with watermelon or pineapple from Little ‘Opihi's by the beach.

All these delicious things considered, the resort’s best dining experience isn’t found at a restaurant. The KA WA‘A lū‘au is a must-do when you visit Aulani. The three-hour experience includes pre-show demonstrations, where you can learn about taro pounding, ukulele playing, traditional tattoos, and more, followed by a buffet dinner featuring tasty seafood, prime rib, and plenty of macaroni salad. The lū‘au performance is truly incredible, with singing, dancing, and storytelling all about Hawaiian culture and history. While Mickey and Minnie make an appearance, the lū‘au is centered around the incredible beauty of the culture and the people.

As a Disney resort, Aulani offers a slate of character-centric activities for all ages. Character meet-and-greets allow guests to snap photos with favorites like Mickey, Minnie, Moana, Stitch, and the much rarer Duffy and friends, typically only found at the Disney theme parks in Asia.

Guests can make their own floral ears (for a fee), shop for Aulani-exclusive Disney merchandise, and splash around during pool parties with characters like Goofy and Max. The resort has several pools, ranging from infinity-edge grotto pools overlooking the ocean to zero-entry family-friendly pools and a water play structure that little ones will love. The massive pool complex also has two larger waterslides, a lazy river, and adults-only hot tubs. Of course, there’s also the beautiful, protected beach and lagoon with complimentary loungers; guests can also paddleboard out on the water for an additional fee.

The Rainbow Reef is another must-do when you visit; the human-made saltwater lagoon is home to around 1,000 vibrant fish, so it’s the perfect spot for even first-time snorkelers to check out the colorful marine life below the surface. You can purchase single-day or entire vacation passes or even book a scuba diving or fish-feeding experience in the reef.

You can also book excursions that depart from the resort; we booked the sailing canoe experience with Hawaiian Ocean Adventures. It leaves right from the Aulani beach, and it was a beautiful way to explore part of the coastline while learning more about Hawaiian culture and nature from the fantastic guides. End the day with storytelling around the fire pit or stargazing to learn how Hawaiians used the night sky for navigation.

Throughout your stay, check out the Aulani app to see what free activities are available each day; you’ll also see which require a fee and how much they cost.

I’ve visited some exceptional spas throughout my travels, but I didn’t expect to find one of the best at a Disney resort.

The Laniwai ritual begins the moment you enter the spa; before you’re shown to the relaxation areas, you select a stone at random from a bucket, and on it, you’ll find a word (mine was “balance”) in both English and Hawaiian that can inspire your time at the spa. After dropping your stone into an indoor reflection pond, you continue into the relaxation areas (dressing rooms and some amenities are separated by gender, but the hydrotherapy garden is co-ed).

Even though you’re just steps from the waterslides and lazy river, Laniwai feels worlds apart, offering a range of body and facial treatments — including signature Hawaiian massages — in a serene setting. Apart from my fantastic lomilomi massage, the outdoor hydrotherapy garden was my favorite part of the experience, and I could have spent hours hopping between the cold plunge and hot tub, walking along the reflexology path, relaxing in the soaking pools, and testing each of the six rain-style showers. And the relaxation doesn’t have to end when your treatment is over; at checkout, I received a sachet of balance-inspired bath salts so I could take my experience with me (back to my room, where I used them to soak in the giant bathtub later in the trip).

Aulani is packed with family-friendly activities and that inimitable Disney magic that all ages love, making it an excellent destination for small and large families. Several pools, an interactive water play area, two giant water slides, a lazy river, and a private saltwater snorkeling lagoon provide plenty of fun spots to splash around before even reaching the protected beach with crystal-clear water and minimal waves. Where else can kids (and kids-at-heart) grab a Stitch or Moana Dole Whip and dip their toes in the pristine ocean before hanging out with Goofy during a pool party? And, of course, character meals, meet-and-greets, storytelling, and other daily activities provide plenty of fun for the whole crew.

Little ones ages four to 12 can also hang out at Aunty’s Beach House, a supervised kids club with engaging activities. While many activities are free, premium experiences (including some that include beloved characters like Moana) require an extra charge. Pre-registration and reservations for Aunty’s Beach House can be found on the  Aulani website .

Disney’s theme parks and resorts are accessible to guests with various abilities, and Aulani is no exception. The property is ADA-compliant with accessible rooms and features, including complimentary beach wheelchairs (available on a first-come, first-served basis) and pool access via pool lifts and zero-entry pool areas. Rainbow Reef has a pool lift, so guests who need it can also enjoy this serene snorkeling experience and spot the colorful marine life up close. Sign language interpretation is available by request for the lū‘au.

Aulani is located in Ko Olina , a resort community on the southwestern shore of Oahu. The resort shares a lagoon and beach area with the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina, and it’s close to the Ko Olina Golf Club’s 18-hole course. Aulani is about 30 minutes away from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) by car; rideshare services like Lyft and shuttle and taxi services are available. If you plan to explore the surrounding area, you could rent a car or plan excursions including transportation to and from the hotel. Parking is available for $40 per day, though Disney Vacation Club members receive complimentary self-parking for up to two vehicles.

As mentioned above, Aulani is a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) property. Rather than a traditional timeshare model, DVC allows members to book vacations at any of the 16 DVC properties (including Disney World and Disneyland hotels ), sail with Disney Cruise Line, or travel with Adventures by Disney using a points-based system. Members can check the points calendars to determine the best time to visit and maximize their points. Of course, you don’t have to be a member to book a room (traditional guest room or villa) at any DVC resort, including Aulani. DVC members can enjoy exclusive perks during their Aulani stay, including free parking, discounts, and activities.

Be sure to check out the offers available on the Aulani website to find limited-time deals before you book. Recent offerings have included up 30 percent off extended stays in the spring and fall, up to 30 off select stays for eligible members of the U.S. military, and up to 35 off for Disney Visa cardholders.

Rediscover the Glamour of the French Riviera this Summer

In a year when the world’s spotlight turns to France for the Summer Olympics, the French Riviera’s timeless allure beckons travelers seeking an extended luxurious retreat in Cap d’Antibes. Here, amidst the shimmering beaches, a rich history of inspiring artists and writers like Pablo Picasso and Francis Scott Fitzgerald and Michelin-starred gastronomy, Hôtel Belles Rives and Hôtel Juana stand as beacons of glamour, history, and the pinnacle of Riviera living. Perfectly positioned for guests wanting to soak up the sun before or after the Olympics, these hotels offer a rare blend of artistic heritage, family tradition, and direct beach access, making them the ideal backdrop for weddings, events, meetings, or simply a gorgeous day-to-night stay.

This summer, visitors to this region will discover everything that has made the French Riviera synonymous with luxurious summer vacations, along with enhanced hotel offerings and events designed to enchant and delight. The unpretentious charm of Juan-les-Pins and Cap d’Antibes offers a gateway to the Riviera’s storied past and its vibrant present, where guests don't just observe the stars but become part of the constellation themselves.

Where to Stay

Hôtel Belles Rives  – Standing proudly above the Mediterranean's azure waters, this Art Deco jewelin Cap d’Antibes offers an escape to the lavish lifestyle of the 1930s, now refreshed for the modern traveler by the fourth-generation owner, Antoine Chauvin-Estène. Following a significant renovation, the hotel welcomes guests to lounge in its contemporary Bar Fitzgerald, indulge in the one-star Michelin restaurant La Passagère, or bask in the sun at the private beach and Water Sports Club, home to the recently-introduced Water Ski Butlers. The property is a testament to the breezy extravagance of a bygone era yet reveals a modern design, offering 43 recently renovated and richly appointed rooms and suites, complete with Hermès wallpaper and luxe amenities. Guests can extend that sun kissed, blissed-out feeling with an innovative treatment by luxe Swiss skincare house, Valmont onsite at its namesake beauty corner.

Hôtel Belles Rives opened for the season on March 8, 2024; the Beach Club opened on April 6, with dinner at the Beach Restaurant served from late June through August. La Passagère is open for dinner only Wednesday to Sunday from April 25 to January 2. A special menu created by Aurélien Véquaud is also on offer at Bar Fitzgerald.

Hôtel Juana  – A symbol of Jazz Age glamour, this Art Deco masterpiece in Juan-les-P ins has been a sanctuary for cultural — Winston Churchill and Wallis Simpson slept here, as did Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. That’s because jazz musicians have been drawn to the Hôtel Juana in Juan-les-Pins since the Jazz Age, and often check in during the Antibes Juan-les-Pins Jazz Festival that has taken place every summer since 1960. Once checked-in, guests will wonder where to look first: the Art Deco splendor of the 40-room hotel which dates back to 1931, the idyllic Mediterranean setting or the spectacular views of the sea, the Lérins Islands and the Massif de l'Esterel mountain range.

Hôtel Juana

Guests can enjoy the marble outdoor pool, the health club, and access to sister property, Hôtel Belles Rives’ private beach, where water-skiing, swimming, massages, and boat rentals are all on offer. The newest concept at Hôtel Juana’s restaurant, PASEO itself is a vibrant hub, alive with the social buzz of locals and international guests alike. This space celebrates eco-conscious design, thanks to Atelier Larguier's innovative upcycling and the unique use of vintage and handcrafted Barbotine ceramics. Upholstered furnishings add a touch of refined comfort, while Britt Erlansen’s textiles bring the whimsy of nature indoors with patterns echoing the verdant La Pinède garden. Adding to this artistic feast is Gaspard Nibelle's dedication, as he intricately hand-painted the ceiling over two months, reminiscent of Michelangelo's historic craftsmanship. From a morning coffee that could segue into a poolside interlude, to a convivial lunch with friends, followed by a romantic dinner, PASEO offers a seamless transition through the day. The dining room, recently updated, opens up to a vivacious garden terrace, immersing diners in an authentically festive Juana vibe, a ritual celebrated by icons of yesteryears.

PASEO opened for the season on March 8, and Hôtel Juana will open for the summer season on April 19, 2024 and close early January 2025.

PASEO at Hôtel Juana

Celebrate the Riviera's artistic heritage when staying at Hôtel Belles Rives or Hôtel Juana, from the Parcours Ceramique auction to the prestigious Prix Fitzgerald, honoring the spirit of the Riviera’s most famous literary resident. The summer of 2024 also sees the return of the Bal des Rêves charity gala and bespoke experiences like yacht provisioning, Mediterranean fishing excursions or wine tastings, showcasing the region's rich culinary and cultural offerings. For a truly memorable experience, plan your trip around one of these can’t miss events:

Parcours Ceramique : May 3-5th

Each year, Hôtel Belles Rives hosts the “Ceramic Journey” auction presented by Pichon & Noudel-Deniau. Among the 220 lots of ceramics, there are often pieces from Capron, Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and other legendary artists. If you don’t win the auction, you can still pick up noteworthy ceramics; the nearby town of Vallauris is well known for its terracotta pottery enameled with a clear glaze, which evolved from traditional culinary pottery likely created from nearby clay deposits during the Roman empire.

Prix Fitzgerald : June 7th

Every year in June, the Hôtel Belles Rives hosts the Prix Fitzgerald, which honors a novel or short story that reflects the elegance, spirit, and art of living embodied by the American writer, and adopted son of the French Riviera, F. Scott Fitzgerald. The tradition was initiated by hotel owner Marianne Estène-Chauvin, who is also president of the Francis Scott Fitzgerald Academy. This year’s winner, selected by a jury of renowned writers and literary critics, will be announced on June 7th at an unforgettable event.

Bal des Rêves:  September 14th

The Bal des Rêves, is an annual charity gala dedicated to a different cause each year. The honored philanthropy of this year’s grand ball, on September 14, has yet to be officially announced, but the formal affair promises to be the social event of the season.

Various bespoke experiences are also available throughout the season, such as casting a rod into the waters of the Med with a local fisherman to catch your dinner, or a Pic Nic at Plage Garoupe, the strip of sand made famous by American expat socialites Sara and Gerald Murphy and their friends. Wine tastings are also on offer, along with exclusive dining options throughout the property.

Rates at Hôtel Belles Rives in spring range from 390€ to 1200€ per room, per night, and in summer from 750€ to 3600€. Rates at Hôtel Juana in spring range from 200€ to 600€ per room, per night and from 390€ to 1300€ in the summer.

The 9 Best Gateway Towns to U.S. National Parks

Our parks expert found the coolest small towns to stay in next door to U.S. national parks. You’re welcome.

Terlingua, Texas, doesn’t have a lot of people. The tiny settlement (population 100ish) is literally a ghost town, where a handful of homes and businesses mingle with a cemetery and the stone ruins of a late 1800s mining camp. It’s dusty, hot as hell, and about 240 miles to the nearest Whole Foods. And yet, I fell in love with Terlingua on my  first visit. The locals were friendly, the beer was cold, the food was good, and the place is just eight miles from Big Bend National Park , which protects a million acres of desert, mountains, and the Rio Grande. Add in the mountain biking at Big Bend Ranch State Park and the incredibly dark, starry sky that blankets the whole area every night, and you have a fantastic gateway town.

Full moon over El Pico, Big Bend National Park

Terlingua isn’t the only burg with an ideal mix of charm, culture, and adventure. Below I’ve picked my favorite gateway towns in the U.S. Some are well-known destinations, while others still qualify as sleepy, but they all sit next to world-class national parks.

Bryson City, North Carolina

Bryson City, North Carolina

More than 12 million people visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park every year, and most of them access it on the west side through Gatlinburg, Tennessee. But Bryson City (pop.: 1,500), on the eastern North Carolina side of the park, offers a mellow experience void of water parks and mega resorts, in a less-busy corner of GSMNP. The serene Lake Fontana and the trails that extend from its shoreline sit right out the small city’s back door.

81 via Lakeshore Trail map

Adventure Inside the Park: The majority of the north shore of Fontana Lake is inaccessible by car, making for a peaceful experience. The 33-mile point-to-point Lakeshore Trail traces the edge of the lake, delivering hikers to isolated backcountry campsites, waterfalls, and fly fishing on streams that rush to join the reservoir.

Adventure Outside the Park: The Nantahala River is 20 minutes south of town, offering a popular class III run loaded with wave trains and views of the narrow Nantahala Gorge. Rent duckies and rafts from Nantahala Outdoor Center (from $39). Mountain bikers, head to Tsali Recreation Area in Nantahala National Forest, with 40 miles of flowy singletrack and the occasional view of Lake Fontana.

fly fishing Nantahala National Forest

Where to Eat: Bryson City’s food scene has blossomed in recent years. I like The Rice Wagon, which serves Hawaiian-inspired dishes outside the Mountain Layers brewery every day. Get the Kalua pork with rice and macaroni salad.

Where to Stay: There are a few inexpensive motels on the outskirts of town, but your best bet is to find a cabin tucked into the woods surrounding Bryson City.

Where to Get Gear: Bryson City Outdoors has hiking gear as well as a taproom with local beer. They also run shuttles for hikers exploring the North Carolina side of the park and Nantahala National Forest.

Jackson, Wyoming

Jackson, Wyoming

It would be an egregious oversight to leave out Jackson, so I’m not going to fight it. The outpost receives plenty of attention, but consider the bonafides: This cute-rustic Wild West town sits at the base of the Tetons, with Grand Teton National Park so close that you can ride your bike to it via a 20-mile multi-use path. Yellowstone National Park is just 2.5 hours away, and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is 20 minutes north, while the local fave, Snow King Resort, drops right into downtown.

Paintbrush-Cascade Loop map

Adventure Inside Grand Teton National Park: Wake up early and get after the 20-mile long Paintbrush to Cascade Canyon Loop , which traverses two canyons, passes two backcountry lakes (Lake Solitude and Holly Lake) and delivers views of Mount Moran, Mount Woodring, and Rockchuck Peak from the top of 10,700-foot Paintbrush Divide.

Adventure Outside Grand Teton National Park: Raft the Snake River Canyon, stacked with eight miles of Class I to III rapids and scenery that oscillates between sheer gray rock walls and gentler slopes peppered with stands of evergreens. Teton Whitewater runs half-day trips from $105 a person. Or ride the six-mile section of the Jackson Hole Multi-Use Pathway that runs through the National Elk Refuge , where elk, bison, and wolves roam through expansive grasslands.

Where to Eat: Creekside Market and Deli has fresh grab-and-go sandwiches and boozy slushies that hit the spot on a hot afternoon. If you’re looking for an upscale dinner, The Bistro has French-inspired dishes like cassoulet and mussels and fries.

Antlers Arch, Jackson, Wyoming

Where to Stay: Rooms in Jackson can get pricey, but the Virginian Lodge is a refurbished motor lodge with tons of outdoor space, including a swimming pool, with large rooms from $271 a night.

Where to Get Gear: Hoback Sports has bike rentals (from $55), and Teton Mountaineering has hiking and climbing gear, if you’ve forgotten anything.

Grand Lake, Colorado

Grand Lake, Colorado

Estes Park soaks up most of the attention (and visitors), but the town of Grand Lake (pop.: 410) sits on the quieter western side of Rocky Mountain National Park , boasting Gold Rush charm with a fraction of the crowds. The Grand Lake Boardwalk, built in the early 1880s, connects shops and restaurants, while the 400-foot-deep Grand Lake borders town, with a public beach just a block from downtown.

Adventure Inside the Park: The backcountry lakes on the east side of the park are packed, but Lake Verna, a 34-acre pool at 10,200 feet in elevation, flies under the radar. Hike 6.6 miles on the East Inlet Trail , passing through aspens and pines while looking for moose and elk in East Meadow, a grassy field bisected by East Inlet Creek. The lake itself is known to be home to a healthy, and hungry, population of brook trout, if you want to bring a fly rod.

Dream Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Adventure Outside the Park: Grab a paddleboard from Rocky Mountain SUP ($30 an hour) and paddle the canal that connects the windier Grand Lake to Shadow Mountain Reservoir, a 1,346-acre lake that’s more protected and user friendly for paddleboarders. The 10,000-foot Shadow Mountain dominates the east side of the lake.

Where to Eat: Casual steak houses and BBQ joints have long been the mainstay in Grand Lake, but One Love Rum Kitchen is spicing things up with Caribbean fare and classic, rum-based “boat drinks.” Get the coconut rum chicken and wash it down with the Painkiller cocktail.

Boardwalk, Grand Lake, Colorado

Where to Stay: Grand Lake Lodge sits on the border of Rocky Mountain National Park, with a large deck overlooking Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain and Mount Craig. Snag one of their recently renovated cabins, the originals of which were ordered from the Sears and Roebuck catalog more than 100 years ago, back when you could buy DIY home kits from the department-store catalog (from $164 a night).

Where to Get Gear: Never Summer has everything from paddleboards to puffies (and SUP pumps if you forget yours), as well as rentals like bear canisters and kid carriers.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor, Maine

Can someone even separate Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park ? The town of 5,000, which sits on the eastern edge of Mount Desert Island, is flanked by Frenchman Bay on one side and Acadia (New England’s only national park) on the other, with trails leaving directly from downtown. Yachts and lobster boats speckle the harbor on one side of town, while rolling mountains dominated by hardwoods rise on the other. In between is a vibrant downtown full of lobster shacks and boutique shops.

Champlain Mountain via The Precipice Trail map

Adventure Inside the Park: You can’t visit Acadia without climbing the Precipice Trail , which rises more than 1,000 feet in just under a mile up the side of Champlain Mountain. It’s a full-contact adventure as you scramble over boulders and ascend a series of iron rungs and ladders up the granite face of Champlain. From the top, you can see all of Frenchman Bay below.

Rocky Maine coast, Acadia National Park

Adventure Outside the Park: Kayak the Porcupines, a chain of four islands in Frenchman Bay, for the beauty and a chance to see seals in the water and bald eagles nesting in the trees. Coastal Kayaking Tours runs half-day trips with beach-combing breaks on the islands (from $67 per person).

Where to Eat: Seafood is it. Lobster rolls are ubiquitous, but start with the one at Abel’s , which is served with mayo on a grilled brioche bun.

lobster restaurant Bar Harbor Maine

Where to Stay: Terramor Outdoor Resort blends high-end safari tents with an airy lodge complete with local taps and an onsite outfitter service. There’s plenty of lawn space for games and a pool, too (from $339 a night).

Where to Gear Up: Cadillac Mountain Sports , in the heart of Bar Harbor, has kayaking, hiking, and limbing gear if you need to pick up last-minute equipment.

Terlingua, Texas

View of the Rio Grande near the entrance to Boquillas.

There’s Texas, there’s West Texas, and then there’s Far West Texas, a region tucked between the Chisos Mountains and the Rio Grande that is so remote, it makes Montana feel like the suburbs. Terlingua (Pop.: 110ish), is the unofficial capital of Far West Texas, but don’t expect a lot of hustle and bustle. The roads are mostly dirt, and the town is as much historic mining ruins as active businesses. But you’ll find a bike shop, nice people, and a vibrant food scene, all sandwiched between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park .

Santa Elena Canyon Trail map

Adventure Inside the Park: Hike the Santa Elena Canyon Trail , which is short (just 1.6 miles round trip) but delivers you to the edge of the Rio Grande, where the canyon’s walls rise 1,500 feet above the water. After the hike, drive to the Hot Springs Historic District , where you can soak in a 105-degree pool, still right next to the Rio Grande.

woman mountain biker, Epic Ride, Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Adventure Outside the Park: Big Bend Ranch State Park has more than 200 miles of singletrack and dirt road open for mountain biking. Pack plenty of water (remember: at least two liters per person), start out at dawn to avoid the heat of the day, and pedal the 57-mile IMBA Epic , which will take you through slopes of sparkling crystals to the edge of a real-life oasis, with a small waterfall dropping into a tight gorge with a pool big enough for plunging.

The Starlight, Terlingua, Texas

Where to Eat: A food-truck scene has popped up in recent years, so there are more options in Terlingua than ever before. Or head to Long Draw Pizza for the Terlingua Spur pie, which is part fajitas/part pizza. Get a six-pack of beer from the Terlingua Trading Company, and sit on its front porch mingling with locals and tourists alike. The Starlight has excellent food, live music, and history: for years this restaurant had no roof, hence the name.

ruins in Terlingua, Texas

Where to Stay: The last time I was in Terlingua, I pitched a tent near the historic cemetery among the mining ruins in the middle of town. These days you can rent a “Bubble” from Basecamp Terlingua , with see-through walls and its own hot tub (from $299 a night). They have nice campsites (from $45 a night) and tear-drop-shaped Lotus tents, too (from $129 a night).

Where to Get Gear: Desert Sports offers bikes, gear, and guided adventures all over the Big Bend region.

Port Angeles, Washington

woman, dog, and wharf Port Angeles, Washington

Sandwiched between the Salish Sea and the million-acre Olympic National Park , Port Angeles (pop.: 20,000) is part harbor town and part mountain town, offering the best of both worlds. The Olympic Mountains rise to 5,000 feet from the edge of one side of town, while you can see Canada, less than 20 miles across the Strait of Juan de Fuca, on the other. The place has attracted boat builders, commercial fishermen, and mountain bikers and surfers alike. From downtown, you can catch a ferry to Canada, or hop on the 60-mile Olympic Discovery Trail and pedal or run a piece of it (or all of it) through  Olympic National Park.

woman on bike trail, Port Angeles, Washington

Adventure Inside the Park: Go deep into Olympic by backpacking a 37-mile out and back on the Hoh River Trail to Blue Glacier, through a rainforest thick with old growth that rises from a floor of moss and ferns. The hike culminates in a view of the 1.7-square-mile Blue Glacier, its crevasse-cut expanse dominating a valley between gray-rock peaks on the edge of the white-capped Mount Olympus.

Kayaking in Olympic National Park

Adventure Outside the Park: Kayaking the Strait of Juan de Fuca is a veritable safari, as you’re looking for bald eagles flying above and harbor seals in the calm water surrounding you. Kayakers often see river otters, as well as colorful starfish that cling to the rocky coast. Elevate Outdoors runs regular half-day trips (starting at $89 per person)

Where to Eat: Next Door Gastropub is a staple of the community. Get the fish and chips with Alaskan cod, or the poutine with a fried egg. Or both.

The Olympic Discovery-Trail, Ediz Hook

Where to Stay: The George Washington Inn is a replica of the first president’s home, Mount Vernon, built on a lavender farm overlooking the strait. Classic bed-and-breakfast hospitality meets one of the best views on the Olympic Peninsula (from $360 a night, breakfast included).

Where to Get Gear: Sound Bikes and Kayaks has everything from climbing gear to local guidebooks. And yes, bikes and kayaks, plus tubes, pumps, paddles, PFDs…and all the little things you might’ve forgotten from home.

Copper Harbor, Michigan

Copper Harbor, Michigan

Isle Royale National Park is not easy to get to. The park is made up of more than 450 islands in the middle of Lake Superior, hours from the mainland. You can catch a three-hour ferry ride from Copper Harbor, located on the edge of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, but you might not want to leave Copper Harbor, as it has one of the most vibrant mountain-bike scenes in the Midwest, not to mention welcoming Upper Peninsula hospitality.

woman kayaks on Lake Superior

Adventure Inside the Park: Because of the three-hour ferry ride ($160 per adult, round trip), Isle Royale isn’t a “day trip” kind of place. Try to book a room at Rock Harbor Lodge (from $245 a night) and spend a couple of days exploring the island. You can rent canoes from Rock Harbor Marina (from $23 for a half day) and paddle some of the fjord-like inlets along the coast of the island. On land, hike the four-mile Stoll Trail , which forms a lollipop loop near Rock Harbor and is packed with epic views of Lake Superior and the rocky shoreline of the island.

Adventure Outside the Park: Don’t come to Copper Harbor without a mountain bike. More than 100 miles of purpose-built trail covers this nook of the Keweenaw Peninsula, offering a smorgasbord of backcountry bliss, tech features, and rhythmic undulations. The three-mile Flow delivers on the name’s promise.

Lake Superior, Grinnell Sanctuary

Where to Eat: Harbor Haus offers German-inspired upscale fare with killer views of the lake. The whitefish is pulled fresh from the water you’re staring at from your table.

Where to Stay: Minnetonka Resort has motel rooms and cabins two blocks from Lake Superior (from $105 a night).

Where to Get Gear: Keweenaw Adventure Company has bikes (rentals from $40) and kayaks, tours, shuttles, and more.

Whitefish, Montana

history of aqua safari resort

Is Whitefish a ski town or a gateway town? Both. Sure, Whitefish Mountain Resort rises from the edge of downtown, but Glacier National Park is just 27 miles away. Hell, nestled up against the 3,300-acre body of water of the same name, Whitefish is also a lake town with its own community beach. Oh, and it’s a progressive trail town as the community works to complete the 55-mile Whitefish Trail, a multi-use singletrack path connecting Whitefish proper with area lakes, rivers, and recreation areas.

Best Adventure Inside the Park: Hike the Highline Trail , which might be the quintessential Glacier Experience. The 12-mile point-to-point trek traverses the western flank of Continental Divide, following cliffs with the aid of cables, passing through meadows where mountain goats and bighorn sheep may appear, and offering views deep into the park.

two people hiking in Glacier National Park

Best Adventure Outside the Park: Pedal the Whitefish Trail . When finished, the WT will form a 55-plus-mile loop around the community, but you don’t have to wait; there are 47 miles of singletrack on the ground now. Or head straight to Spencer Mountain , where 15 miles of singletrack are loaded with the wooden features made popular by bike parks on the North Shore of Vancouver.

The Whitefish Trail map

Where to Eat: Bonsai Brewing Company has a knack for IPAs as well as hearty rice bowls. Get the Bowlin’ Out, with pickled veggies and hummus. On Thursdays, local DJs show up to spin their own collections of vinyl.

Where to Stay: The Whitefish Bike Retreat has lodge rooms, cabins, and campsites directly on the Whitefish Trail, also a wood-fired sauna, not to mention shuttles and rentals (from $50 a night).

Where to Get Gear: Whitefish Outfitters has gear for every adventure sport under the sun, as well as rentals and tours.

Fayetteville, West Virginia

Fayetteville, West Virginia

This former mining town has been reborn as an adventure hub with quick access to world-class rock climbing and whitewater rafting inside the New River Gorge . The New River Gorge was named America’s 63 rd national park in only 2020, proof that this area and its deep, rugged canyon are truly amazing. The town of 2,800 isn’t much bigger than the historic square where you’ll find the majority of shops and restaurants. But just past the edge of town, the earth drops 1,000 feet to the bottom of the river thanks to millions of years of erosion, turning Fayetteville’s backyard into a playground for hikers, climbers, and boaters.

Best Adventure Inside the Park:   At just 70,000 acres, the New River Gorge National Park isn’t big, relatively speaking. But the adventure is stout. Raft the 12 miles of the Lower New to see the gorge in all its glory as you try to stay in the boat while navigating big water, class IV and V waves.

Best Adventure Outside of the Park: Just north of Fayetteville, Summersville Lake has 2,700 acres of aqua-blue water surrounded by sandstone cliffs, making it a hubbub of people paddling, swimming, and jumping from rocks into the water. ACE Adventure offers full-day paddleboard adventures on the lake that take in the most scenic cliffs and waterfalls (from $120 per person).

New River Gorge Bridge, West Virginia

Where to Eat: Pies and Pints is a cornerstone of Fayetteville. The pizzas range from traditional to weird (the Brunch Pie has scrambled eggs), but they’re always good. The selection of beer is unrivaled in the area, too.

Where to Stay: Adventures on the Gorge has campsites, primitive cabins, and deluxe homes situated on the edge of the canyon on an expansive property with its own restaurants, pool, and trail system (campsites from $39 a night).

Where to Get Gear: Waterstone Outdoors has hiking and climbing gear, as well as the local beta you need to make the most of your time in the gorge.

Graham Averill is Outside magazine’s national parks columnist. He appreciates a good gateway town, but has never actually lived within shouting distance of a national park. If he had to choose one of the towns listed above to call home, it might be Port Angeles, Washington. Still his favorite is Terlingua.
