You're reading this because you're likely deep in internet research, trying to determine the best places to travel in March. It's that awkward month between winter and spring, when it can get surprisingly hot and still unseasonably cold at the flip of a switch. Whenever leaving the house, it's a toss up—is this puffer weather, or the time to switch to sandals ?

Flee the indecisive climate and get thee to somewhere that's properly hot. Or properly cold. Though the notorious spring breakers tend to command all the attention at airports and train stations this month, there's so much more to traveling in March than sipping margaritas with a herd of Gen Zers (sorry, Gen Z). As spring looms in the northern hemisphere, some destinations begin to emerge from winter hibernation with blooming flowers . Meanwhile, buzzy spots in South America and Asia offer a blessed lack of the humidity (and crowds) you might experience in the busier summer months (did someone say shoulder season?).

Whether you’re looking to warm up with a tropical beach vacation or want to cling to the last days of winter with a ski trip, this is the month to do it. Here are nine of the best places to travel in March, from Big Sky in Montana to the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Panama is a great place to visit any time of year, thanks to its biodiverse jungles, sprawling beaches, and relative lack of crowds compared to neighboring Costa Rica. The coastal town of Ilulissat is particularly appealing in March, when there are less tourists, lower hotel prices, and a lack of mosquitoes and other pesky bugs (a major problem in the summer months). If you think ski season is over by the time March rolls around, think again: Montana’s Big Sky Resort doesn’t close its slopes until late April, meaning you can still enjoy prime conditions during this month. It takes a bit of effort to reach the Raja Ampat Islands —flying first to  Jakarta , then to Sorong, where most travelers hop on a liveaboard. But once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by lush jungles, blue channels, and biodiverse reefs. The archipelago is truly a scuba diver’s dream, where an average dive gets you up close to manta rays, hawksbill turtles, and around 1,300 species of colorful coral-dwelling fish. There’s really no bad time to visit, but March typically yields the best diving weather (think less rain and calmer waters).

The most popular way to explore Raja Ampat is by booking a small cruise or yacht, and you have several great options to choose from. You could try Aqua Expeditions and set sail on the long-range cruising yacht, Aqua Blu , which offers seven-night, island-hopping itineraries . The boat has 15 sea-facing suites and a spa, and guests can partake in activities like snorkeling, kayaking, diving to manta ray cleaning stations, and searching for elusive bird of paradise species on guided hikes.

Southeast Asia's Lion City is aptly named because it's facing the new year with a great big roar. There's always lots to do in Singapore, especially in the year ahead (the cosmopolitan city-state is on our list of Best Places to Go in Asia in 2024 ), but there's something happening in March that's whipping the island into a tizzy: The pop princess Taylor Swift is bringing her Eras Tour to the Singapore National Stadium for her sole stop in the region. Hotels bookings are reportedly through the roof, and additional flights have been added , but keep an eye out for the openings of the new Grand Hyatt and the latest Raffles on Sentosa Island for more room at the inn, as it were.

Beyond the Swiftie reasons to swing by Singapore in March, there's also the return of glamorous and ultra-luxury train travel with Belmond's Eastern & Oriental Express , which will, in February, have begun their new itineraries from Singapore into the Malaysian peninsula and back, featuring excursions into Taman Negara National Park and culinary tours on Penang Island, which should be incredibly fun and engaging—that is, if you can tear yourself away from your plush state room or the swanky dining car.

Dana Point, California

Dana Point, a small harbor city along California’s southern coast, is known for its incredible dolphin and whale populations. That reputation was cemented in early 2021, when the town was dubbed the first “Whale Heritage Site” in the United States, courtesy of the World Cetacean Alliance. Dana Point is now one of five global destinations to receive such an honor, specifically created to recognize destinations that offer dolphin- and whale-watching experiences that are both responsible and sustainable.

While you can see some whale species year-round, February and March are known as peak season to see the California Gray Whales as they make their annual migration to Baja California . Book a 2.5-hour tour with Captain Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari , where you can see the magnificent mammals from an underwater glass pod while listening to a live narration from expert naturalists. Or, book the OC Wine Cruise with Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching, which lets passengers sample four different organic wines while they scan the sunset-lit waters for breaching whales.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Picture it: Seasonal floodwaters rolling into parched sands and transforming them into a delicate tracery of glittering rivers and channels—the dry plains once again dripping with new life. That's the scene that greets you at the Okavango Delta in Botswana, the world's largest inland river delta. It plays host to a wide variety of wildlife, thriving across great swathes of the land held by the Moremi Game Reserve. You may encounter safari lions, leopards, giraffes, and rhinos; and when the floodwaters quench the land, you'll paddle in canoes past hippos, elephants, and crocodiles.

In the summer (that's January and February in Botswana, given it's the southern hemisphere), rainfall from the Angola highlands is drained by the Okavango River into the delta, where the water levels will rise and fall over the next four months, from March through June, making this month the best time to see the transformation happen before your very eyes.

Whether you’re looking for a warm-weather escape from chilly temperatures at home or a late-season ski trip, we’ve got you covered. New additions to Legoland this year are Dino Valley and Lego World Parade.

The annual eight-day South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festival arrives at the Austin Convention Center on March 8, with technology, culture, film, music, comedy, and notable speakers. Rodeo Austin is in town from March 8-23, and there’s live music, great food, and always plenty of things to do in Austin .  “March brings a vibrant energy to Austin, well beyond the excitement of SXSW. As a local and advocate for the city’s charm, I recommend visiting this month when the streets buzz with local flair, outdoor adventures are prime, and the culinary scene comes alive,” says Hotel ZaZa general manager, Jacob Weaver.

In March, the Mile High City is still chilly with daytime temperatures reaching the mid-60s and colder nights. It’s a beautiful time to be outdoors, and nearby, Colorado’s ski towns are still covered in snow. With museums, theater, breweries, and concerts at Red Rock Amphitheater , there are dozens of fun things to do in Denver at any time of year. A sure sign of spring is the beginning of baseball season, and Denver welcomes MLB’s Colorado Rockies to Coors Field and adjacent McGregor Square.

As one of the best beaches in the U.S. , Clearwater Beach is an idyllic destination once the weather begins to warm up in March. The Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary at the end of March and early April with its famous sand sculptures and family entertainment. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium, historic Cleveland Street District, dolphin cruises, miles of beaches, and sunny weather in the high 70s make March in Clearwater Beach perfect for families and spring breakers.

Spring is a gorgeous time for skiing in Park City , with snow throughout March (and even later some years). Conveniently located less than an hour from Salt Lake City International Airport, the charming downtown is almost as much of a draw as the snowy slopes. Restaurants, bars, shops, galleries, and a history museum make exploring fun after a day of skiing. There’s also snowboarding, snowmobiling, a toboggan-style mountain coaster, zip line, and ski lessons for all ages. Trails and slopes for all levels are available, from beginner to expert.

Located in Greensboro about 75 miles east of Atlanta, Lake Oconee is a serene getaway in central Georgia. Boating, golf, hiking, and nearby Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds offer many ways to enjoy the early spring weather and gorgeous outdoors. At Sandy Creek, there’s fishing, kayaking, off-roading, archery, and sporting clay shooting. In the historic downtown, visitors will find antique stores, boutiques, restaurants, and a walking tour for those who want to discover more about Greensboro’s past. Six championship golf courses and the Kingdom at Lake Oconee provide golfers with opportunities for play, practice, equipment, and lessons. My husband and I spent a few days — and played a few rounds of golf — at Lake Oconee. He’s been asking me when we’re going back, so I just might see you there if you schedule a trip in March. 

Where to Stay: The recently renovated Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Lake Oconee offers lakeside dining, boating, a spa, guest rooms, suites, cottages, and the Lake House, with four bedrooms and a stunning lakefront location. RVs and campers are welcome at Lake Oconee KOA .

Perfect weather in the mid-70s, gorgeous scenery, white-sand beaches, and a lively atmosphere make March a great time for a trip to Oahu. The island is celebrating the 28th Annual Honolulu Festival (March 8-10) with a parade, stage performances, food, music, and a craft fair. March is prime whale watching time, and a cruise to see the humpbacks is a thrilling experience. Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, swimming, surfing, or just relaxing on the beach are more ways to enjoy the island. My first snorkeling experience was at Hanauma Bay, and I’ve returned several times since then; the marine life there is incredible. Visitors can learn about the history of the islands at the Polynesian Cultural Center or the fascinating Bishop Museum . At Wai Kai , there’s a lagoon, wave pool, kayaking, and more for family fun.

Where to Stay: The surf-themed Twin Fin and beachfront Alohilani are options near Waikiki Beach. Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa is a great option for families with activities for all ages.

T+L’s 2024 Destination of the Year sees its dry season in March, making this the ideal time to visit for some travelers (although the best time to visit Costa Rica largely depends on what you want to experience). “There’s really no bad time to visit Costa Rica,” says Trevor Ling, owner of Hotel Three Sixty. “Late February through March is characterized by the driest weather and spectacular wildlife sightings, like the annual humpback whale migration. This is when Osa Peninsula’s biodiversity really comes to life. Here on the Pacific Coast, March is also prime time for watching turtles hatch on our coastline’s pristine beaches.” Whether your goal is to see wildlife, beaches, rainforests, or small towns, you can find what you’re after in Costa Rica.

The three-island archipelago just south of Italy features well-preserved medieval fortresses, archaeological sites, and museums. From March through May, the Malta Biennale will be celebrated with cultural events and festivities. “Malta is the hidden gem of the Mediterranean, and art and design lovers who visit our country in 2024 will see more events, exhibitions, and festivals than ever before,” according to Phyllis Muscat, CEO and board chair of MICAS (Malta International Contemporary Art Space). “This fall our new contemporary art museum will open within the old fortification walls above the marina, only a few minutes walk from the center of Valletta. MICAS will offer visitors an ambitious collection of international contemporary art.”

Spring arrives in March with flowers blooming and temperatures warming into the high 60s, perfect for being outdoors. Hiking in Keramashoto National Park , strolling along beaches, and enjoying colorful blossoms are among things to do. In Higashi Village, more than 50,000 azaleas bloom for the March Azalea Festival. The Netflix series, Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones , has inspired travel to Okinawa, and visitors find incredible experiences like diving among coral reefs, learning about the islands’ history and traditions, and enjoying the delicious cuisine. Flights from major cities in Asia arrive at Okinawa’s Naha Airport.

March is ideal for a trip to Mexico City, with dry weather, temperatures in the mid-70s, and the blooming of the purple jacarandas. It’s the perfect time to explore the city’s neighborhoods, from hip to historic, sample street food, and learn about the past. More than a museum, Casa Azul is the place where Frida Kahlo spent her early life and her time with Diego Rivera. Personal objects, folk art, photos, books, and paintings by both artists create a fascinating experience. I loved the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco during my visit a few years ago; seeing local families, tourists, and the colorful boats ( trajineras ) and flowers was such fun.

March begins the shoulder season in Florence, after the winter months but ahead of spring and summer’s more popular tourist seasons. Visiting museums, restaurants, and piazzas is ideal in March, and with the right clothing, the cool weather can be comfortable. Florentine New Year , dating to the Middle Ages, is celebrated on March 25 with a procession through the city streets. Easter falls on March 31, and a unique tradition, the Explosion of the Cart , takes place. Claudio Meli, general manager of The Place tells T+L, “March is the perfect time to visit our beloved Florence and embrace some of our local traditions. One of my favorites is the Scoppio del Carro , or Exploding of the Cart. Outside of the Duomo, the cardinal of Florence lights a massive cart and fireworks are released, symbolizing the Holy Spirit.”

Where to Stay: The Place , a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Piazza Santa Maria Novella, will reopen in mid-March after a redesign. Hotel Savoy, a Rocco Forte Hotel , is located on Piazza della Repubblica.

“The Harvest Festival in Mendoza is a captivating celebration that beautifully intertwines the rich viticultural heritage of the region with a vibrant display of culture and tradition. It’s a time when the vineyards come alive with the culmination of a year’s hard work, and the air is filled with the aroma of freshly harvested grapes,” Veronica Marquina, general manager at Cavas Wine Lodge, told T+L . “It’s a must-experience event that immerses visitors in the heart and soul of Mendoza’s wine culture.” The Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (Feb.28-March 3) celebrates the harvest with music, dance, theater, and, of course, wine. This agricultural region where malbec is famously made is about 650 miles west of Buenos Aires.

Where to Stay: Cavas Wine Lodge , a Relais & Châteaux member, is a boutique property set in a 55-acre vineyard. The Vines Resort & Spa is set in the Uco Valley, and SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites features wines from Susana Balbo Winery .

Located in the Caribbean Sea, this island is shared by two nations: the Netherlands and France. Visitors cross the open border easily, and in St. Maarten (the Dutch side), they’ll find casinos, bars, shopping, and nightlife, while in St. Martin (the French side), excellent restaurants, beaches, and beautiful natural surroundings are abundant. The largest regatta in the Caribbean, the Heineken Regatta (Feb. 29-March 3), will bring yacht fans from around the world. Spring has sprung (or at least limped trembling out the shadowy depths of February) and it’s time to celebrate new life with new horizons. What better time of year could there be to explore a destination you haven’t yet discovered?

Head to Borneo to meet the orangutans, or wrap up and to wander the streets and museums of Copenhagen . 1.  Istanbul

One of the world’s most fascinating cities, Istanbul has one foot in Europe and one in Asia , with the mighty Bosphorus strait dividing the city in two. Sure, we all know Italy as a summer vacation spot, but it does get pretty choker. Why not beat the start of the high season and head to Sicily for some springtime sun, before the temperatures reach their scorching summer heights? The breezy March weather will make for a much more enjoyable time to sample all the seafood and explore the gorgeous streets of Palermo and Catania. But it's not just the island’s cities that are worth a peruse - the vibrant town of Cefalu is home to some incredible ancient ruins and even a Norman cathedral.

3.  Copenhagen

Straddling two coastal islands, Denmark ’s capital makes for an excellent city break in March. You’ll want to layer up— temperatures don’t tend to exceed 5C/41F—but it’s a small price to pay to avoid the seething tourist crowds that descend later in the year. Most of the main attractions are open, from the National Museum of Denmark to Amalienborg Palace.

4.  Yucatan, Mexico

The frankly glorious Mexican state of Yucatan has more world-class things to see, do and experience than some entire countries, and March is a great time to visit. Laze on paradise beaches (take your pick from Tulum , Playa del Carmen ,  Riviera Maya  or nearby island Cozumel ), explore ancient Mayan ruins, walk around vibrant cities with stunning colonial architecture, and dive into gorgeous cenotes (azure sink-holes).

5.  Palm Springs, California

This oasis of a city, located in the California desert about a two hour drive east from L.A. , is a brilliant spot to soak up some spring (or late winter) sunshine (expect 27C/80F). Other than lounging by a hotel pool, a must-do is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which will carry you on a rotating cable car through a majestic canyon before depositing you at a viewpoint which presents the entire Coachella Valley in all its glory.

6.  Jaipur, India

Jaipur, aka the ‘Pink City’ on account of the blushed hue of its buildings, is one of India ’s top highlights, and March temperatures (around 30C/86F at the hottest part of the day) make it all the more agreeable. Highlights include the stupendously impressive palaces of Hawa Mahal and Jal Mahal (the latter sits in the middle of a lake), and Nahargarh Fort, which is one of the finest in a country where there’s plenty of competition.

7.  Marrakech

Pleasing alliterations aside, there are some huge pluses to visiting Morocco ’s Marrakech in March. The daytime temperatures lounge around a manageable 22C/72F, perfect for a city that begs to be explored on foot, with a tantalising maze of alleyways within the ancient medina walls (not to mention the enormous public square, Jemaa el-Fna, at the heart of it all). March is one of the best times to visit Central America (the dry season runs from December to April), with balmy air and pleasant sea temperatures: Trek to Belize for splendid coral reefs; Guatemala has beautiful Lake Atitlan; Nicaragua, with its surfable volcanoes (bucket list anyone?); and Costa Rica 's jaw-dropping biodiversity. 9.  Austin, Texas

The Texan capital has firmly established itself as the live music capital of the world (to borrow its self-awarded slogan), and the corresponding highlight that is SXSW occurs in March (March 10-19 in 2023, to be exact). Other than the music scene, there’s a huge amount to experience here, especially outdoors: the city boasts 300 or so parks , and many miles of urban walking and cycling trails . Flight prices are usually pretty good in March too compared to the more crowded summer months. In its State of Travel 2024 report, Going.com predicts that 2024 airfare will be similar to last year but notes that there are deals to be had, especially in Europe. Sweet! That's why we included a few across-the-pond picks along with sunny spots in Florida, California and the Caribbean in this list of 25 top destinations to visit in March. Since this month may be your last chance to hit the slopes, we sprinkled in a few winter wonderlands that are magical whether or not you ski. Festivals and flowers drove our other choices, including an under-the-radar gem outside of Nashville.

Washington, DC

Hello, cherry blossoms! The famed DC trees are expected to reach peak bloom on March 23 to 26 — a bit earlier than usual. Keep tabs on the Bloom Watch and check the activity schedule for the National Cherry Blossom Festival running from March 20 to April 14 to zero in on the best time for you to visit. Stay at The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, a historic hotel that's offering a Cherry Blossom package from March 13 to April 14. It includes a cherry blossom amenity, breakfast for two and a bike rental (pedal your way to the Tidal Basin near the National Mall where there's a large number of cherry blossoms). While you're in town, don't miss the International Spy Museum and the newish exhibits at the free National Air & Space Museum . Heads up that both museums require timed tickets.

Kansas City, Missouri

This Midwestern city is moving and shaking—and we're not talking about Taylor and Travis sightings. March ushers in a handful of new openings that make this city a strong contender for a spring-break getaway. Got a soccer fan in the family? Kansas City's new CPKC Stadium — the world’s first stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team — will host its premiere match on March 16. As amazing as it is, it may be one-uped by an imaginative children's museum that's set to open on March 12. The Rabbit Hole will feature interactive exhibits themed after some of the most beloved children's books, including Frog and Toad, Where The Sidewalk Ends and Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. Other must-sees for families visiting KC include the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum and The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures. Stay at the new Aloft Kansas City Country Club Plaza , which is the heart of it all.

Russian River Valley, California

A hidden gem in Sonoma Wine Country, Russian River Valley hosts its 46th Annual Wine Barrel Tasting weekend on March 2 and 3. You'll be able to meet more than 50 local wine makers, learn about the wine-making process and even sample the goods directly from the barrel. Stay at the woman-owned Stravrand Russian River Valley (pictured), a 21-room historic hotel, that received a glow-up a few years ago. Some rooms have fireplaces plus an outdoor cedar hot tub.

Orlando, Florida

Hop over to Orlando for an Easter Egg Hunt that will blow your kids' minds. On March 31, The Grande Lakes Orlando (which includes both the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels) will host a hunt with thousands of eggs; they had 3,200 eggs last year! The egg-stravgant hunt is exclusive to overnight guests ages 12 and under. Other weekend festivities at Grande Lakes, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award winner, include a Cottontail Tea, cookie workshop and springtime festival with games and crafts.

Boston, Massachusetts

March Madness marches into Boston the last week of the month. Beantown will host the East Region men's basketball round at TD Garden from March 28 to 30. Score tickets for a game (or three!) and work in some other sightseeing, including the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail and the View Boston Observation Deck . Make The Boxer Hotel your home base. The industrial chic, pet-friendly property is just a five-minute walk to TD Garden.

Carlsbad, California

Flowers and LEGOs — they're a match made in Carlsbad. The Northern San Diego County locale is home to both the year-round Legoland California theme park and The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch , which re-opens on March 1. That's when visitors can take a tractor wagon ride to see the rainbow of Ranunculus flowers that adorn 55 acres of rolling hills. Kids have a bunch of activities just for them, like a mini maze made with sweet pea flowers (aww!). Over at LEGOLAND California , Dino Valley, which features an interactive dinosaur safari and other fun attractions, will open this spring. Wind down your roarin' good day in one of the new roomy family suites at The Cassara Carlsbad, Tapestry Collection by Hilton .

Easton, Pennsylvania

Bunny ears up! Families can spend the night at a suite that's themed after PEEPS, the iconic Easter treat. The brand adorably decked out a space at Home2 Suites by Hilton Easton , near its headquarters in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Starting at $159 per night and available to book from March 18 to 29, The PEEPS Sweet Suite includes a treat-filled Easter basket plus a tasting and photo op at the Peeps Factory (which usually isn't open to visitors). While you're in Easton, drop in on the Crayola Experience , which is packed with hands-on, art-related exhibits.

Naples, Florida

For a spring break trip that both kids and parents can get behind, Naples delivers. Beach, pool, eat and repeat at The Ritz-Carlton Naples , which has wrapped up its much-anticipated expansion and redesign. There are thoughtful family touches all around, from pool toys to a kids' activity room with books and games in a massive new Club Lounge. If you do go off-property, visit The Naples Botanical Garden , which offers activity kits for kids to use as they're exploring. Beaver Creek, Colorado

Early March typically brings peak skiing to Beaver Creek Resort in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. Named one of Good Housekeeping's 10 Best Ski Resorts for Families, the resort is a solid pick for beginning and intermediate skiers of any age. Off the slopes, its charming village hosts a Fun Fest with carnival games every Saturday in March. Stay at Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa , a ski-in, ski-out spot at the base of the mountain. The chateau-style lodging, winner of a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award, is conveniently located next to the building that offers ski and snowboard lessons for kids ages 3 and up.

A one-of-a-kind island shared by two nationalities, St. Martin (also called St. Maarten) has a spring climate that's tailor-made for beach-hopping, water sports and nature experiences. March has the lowest average rainfall and the best temperatures to boot: Bask in sunny days with highs around 80 degrees. Where should you stay? If you like all-inclusives, the Dutch side offers plenty, including the Sonesta Ocean Point Resort . On the French side, you'll find more intimate options, like the new Le Martin Boutique Hotel . With plenty of direct flights from the U.S. to the airport on the Dutch side of the island, St. Martin is a strong contender for both family spring break and a romantic getaway.

Lake Como, Italy

Get to Italy before everyone else! Many of Lake Como's seasonally operated hotels re-open in mid-March at rates that are a fraction of the summer prices. High temperatures are typically in the upper 50s to low 60s during the later part of the month — and wisteria, early hydrangeas and other pretty petals are springing back to life all around the lake. The art-centric Grand Hotel Tremezzo , which re-opens on March 15, boasts sumptuous accommodations with three pools, gourmet dining options and a man-made beach. The latter, called T Beach, is a unique lido where guests can dip their feet in the sand and take a refreshing plunge in the floating pool surrounded by the Lake.

Dana Point, California

Celebrate the return of the California gray whales at the 52nd Annual Dana Point Festival of Whales from March 1 to 3. While this year's activity schedule is still in the works, the weekend usually includes a parade, street fair, concerts, beach cleanup and more. You can also book one of the city's many whale-watching excursions. Stay at Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa , a Victorian-style resort overlooking the California Coastline and Dana Point Harbor — just steps away from the festival.

Home to two national parks, Arches and Canyonlands, Moab is a hot spot for nature enthusiasts. You'll beat the heat (and still enjoy all the splendor) by visiting in March. With plenty of daytime activities to choose from like hiking, rock climbing and horseback riding, it’s an adventurer’s dream. But the fun doesn’t stop after the sun goes down. Boasting some of the darkest skies in the country, it’s one of the best places to stargaze. Visitors can get spend hours staring at the brilliant stars dotting the pitch-black sky. Keystone, Colorado

Dublin, Ohio

Can't swing a trip to Ireland this St. Patrick's Day? As luck would have it, a midwestern town throws the “The Greenest, Grandest Parade” on March 9. It will feature marching bands, bagpipers, giant inflatables and leprechauns. The fun actually starts bright and early with a pancake breakfast featuring green syrup. Or you could head to town the following weekend for its St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl on March 16. If you're looking for a place to stay that's more charming than the hotel chains in Dublin, venture a couple of miles away to The Timbrook Guesthouse in Columbus.

The Palm Beaches, Florida

If you're taking the kids to Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando for spring break, tack on a few extra days for relaxation at the end. Thanks to the new Brightline high-speed passenger train, you can zip from Orlando to West Palm Beach in about two hours. A 2024 Family Travel Award winner, The Palm Beaches have 47 miles of dreamy shoreline for kids to build castles and for you to rest your weary feet from those 20,000-step theme park days. For the most easygoing experience, stay at Crane's Beach House Boutique Hotel and Luxury Villas in Delray Beach. Moderately priced for the area and just a block from the beach, it boasts full kitchens, two saltwater pools and tropical gardens.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is charming any time of year, but in March you'll really be able to walk its oak-lined streets and soak up all the history, culture and shopping without breaking a sweat. Although you may not think of Savannah as a St. Patrick's Day hotspot, 2024 is the 200th anniversary of its Celtic Celebration . Featuring marching bands, dancers and elaborate floats, the St. Patrick's Day Parade will take place on March 16. Stay over at The Alida Hotel , located in the Entertainment District. Franklin, Tennessee

Let the crowds go to Nashville and bring your family about half an hour away to Franklin. Brimming with history, music, shopping and restaurants, this mid-size southern city is hosting the 10th annual Kids' Art Festival of Tennessee on March 23. You can expect hands-on creative activities plus live performances. Stay at Southall Farm & Inn, a new luxury nature-focused resort, or in the historic downtown at The Harpeth Franklin Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton.

Zurich, Switzerland

Fresh clean air and majestic snow-capped mountains peppering the horizon are just a couple of things that come to mind about Zurich. And March is a surprisingly good time to visit thanks to lower room rates and spring wildflower blooms. An exceptional day in the largest city in Switzerland includes stops at one of the many outdoor produce markets, the historical square Lindenhof and a Limmit River Cruise, which re-opens on March 29. Austin, Texas

Calling all movie and music super-fans: Badges are still available to SXSW (South by Southwest) taking place on March 8-16. The music festival portion alone showcases 340+ artists! But even after the festival rolls out of town, venues like Austin City Limits Live (ACL Live) at The Moody Theater and Antone’s Nightclub feature country and down-home blues tunes. After grooving to music, visitors can check out the city’s other main attraction: barbecue. Stiles Switch BBQ and Interstellar BBQ are trusted go-tos for grubbing on succulent ribs and mouth-watering smoked meats. Turn in for the night at Omni Austin Hotel Downtown , which boasts renovated rooms, outstanding views of the cityscape, top-notch amenities and easy access to the bustling downtown area.

As spring breaks free of winter’s icy grip, towns and cities awaken to celebrate longer days and warming temperatures. Festivals kick off almost everywhere. Bars and restaurants reopen. Social calendars fill up fast. The best places to travel in March celebrate the new season with verve and vigor.

March is the month of color. From Europe to the US, cherry blossoms transform towns into a panoply of pink. Fire and fireworks festivals turn the skies red. In India, Holi paints a rainbow across the whole country. And the entire world goes green for St. Patrick’s Day. Here are my favorite places to holiday in March.

Best places to party for St Patrick’s Day

Celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day have spread around the world in recent years. From its homeland to the US, here are the best celebrations to visit over the weekend of March 17th.

1. Dublin, Ireland

On the third weekend in March, much of the world will be engulfed by a bright green St. Patrick’s party. Regardless, there’s nowhere better to spend it than Ireland ’s capital, Dublin . 

Pre-empt the party with a free tour of St. Patrick’s Cathedral , where writer and poet Jonathan Swift served as dean. Then join hundreds of thousands of revelers at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade as it winds through the city. From Parnell Street to Kevin Street, entertainers and marching bands from all over the world put on an enormous show. 

Elsewhere, all of Dublin is awash with green. In the Festival Quarter at the National Museum of Ireland’s Collins Barracks, a vast roster of events are planned. Music, dance and circus acts entertain, food sizzles and, of course, gallons of Guinness are poured. It’s the very definition of the Irish craic, just make sure to book early to get the best hotel and flight deals.

2. Chicago, Illinois

• Why visit in March? The biggest St. Patrick’s Day party in the US.

Probably the most famous St. Patrick’s Day party in the US, Chicago celebrates its Irish roots in style every year. From the Irish enclave at Beverly to the Irish American Heritage Center near Albany Park, the party lasts all weekend.

Irish taverns fill with partygoers and cultural events take place on seemingly every corner. Events like Shamrock’n the Block at Old St. Patrick’s Church showcase what the event means to local communities. In 2024, the big parade will take place on Saturday 16th along Columbus Drive between Balbo and Monroe. The extravaganza will feature huge floats, bagpipers and Irish step dancers, all led by the Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band.

The big draw, however, is the now legendary dyeing of the Chicago River. Using a non-toxic vegetable-based powder, the city turns its primary waterway into a vivid emerald-green soup. Lasting for several days, it’s the perfect time to take a river cruise.

3. Munich, Germany

• Why visit in March? To celebrate all things beer.

March is shoulder season in southern Germany. Crowds are as thin as they ever get and prices as low. That could be down to the weather, with average temperatures only a shade above freezing. In my view though, that just means a ski trip to nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen is still on the cards. 

Although Bavaria’s capital is most famous for Oktoberfest, St. Patrick’s Day isn’t far behind in its cultural calendar. Head to Odeonsplatz for the usual green-hued parades and parties but with a distinctly German twist. Alongside the Guinness you’ll find classic Bavarian beers and foods to warm your bones. Try the würstl (sausages) of course but I urge you to try a schweinshaxe (ham hock) too. Caution: you may need to sit down afterwards.

If that’s not enough, Starkbierfest also runs from March 1st to 24th in the grand hall of the Paulaner Nockherberg. Literally translated as the Strong Beer Festival , it offers exactly what its name suggests.

Best places to travel in March in the US

While much of the US is still bitterly cold, things are warming up in the south. Spring blossoms, harvest festivals and one of the world’s great cultural gatherings dominate the March calendar.

4. Macon, Georgia

• Why visit in March? To see the city turn pink.

In the heartland of Georgia , nature puts on one of its most spectacular shows in March. From the 15th to 24th, Macon plays host to the International Cherry Blossom Festival . The city transforms into a “pink, cotton-spun paradise” as its 350,000 Yoshino trees erupt in a cacophony of cherry blossoms. In celebration, it puts on parades, concerts, fairs and an almighty pink party .

Beyond the blossom, Macon is an epicenter of Native American history . Stroll Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park , a fascinating memorial to the region’s ancient indigenous peoples. The newest national park in the US, it serves up a great view of Macon from the top of the Temple Mound.

In the city, wide avenues are lined with art galleries, boutiques and architecture that speaks to its long history. Music is everywhere, in buzzing bars and concert venues, on the streets and in historic venues like Grant’s Lounge . Macon is served by a regional airport but taking a flight to Atlanta , two hours away, and renting a car is easiest.

5. Austin, Texas

• Why visit in March? To gorge on Texan hospitality at SXSW.

One of the US’s cultural powerhouses, Austin peaks in March with the sprawling South by Southwest festivals . Once the domain of musicians and movie makers, it has grown to be one of the most comprehensive cultural events in the world . A playground for comedians and creatives, entrepreneurs and technologists to showcase acts and share ideas.

Unsurprisingly, SXSW brings with it sky high prices and heaving crowds. Plan ahead, find a well-priced stay and you can tune into the events that don’t carry a huge price tag. Bars like Mohawk and Sahara Lounge pop with live music and comedy. Parks and even parking lots host all manner of pop-up shows .

And there’s always a huge slice of Texan hospitality on offer. I find it’s best enjoyed with plates of Tex-Mex and frozen margaritas, preferably at Trudy’s Texas Star or Habaneros .

6. Charleston, South Carolina

• Why visit in March? Food festivals and foot-stomping fun.

Visiting Charleston is like stepping through a door into the history of the US. From walking the French Quarter as horse-drawn carriages clatter past over cobblestones to the historic houses and exhibitions on Museum Mile . Never do the city’s antebellum houses and blossoming trees look better than in March under spring light and mild temperatures.

The sun and warmth draws locals and visitors onto the streets in search of entertainment. From March 6th to 10th the Charleston Wine + Food Festival celebrates the best of local culture and cuisine. Brunches and lunches, dining and dancing, classes and workshops, all community-led to celebrate the stories and flavors of the Lowcountry.

Later in the month, the Charleston Bluegrass Festival lights up the Woodlands Nature Reserve with a weekend of boot-stompin’ bluegrass.

Best places to travel in March in Europe

With spring dawning, Europe is waking up. Spain is my country of choice with temperatures rising fast and one of my favorite festivals in the world taking over the city of Valencia. 

7. Valencia, Spain

• Why visit in March? To feel the heat of Las Fallas Festival.

In many ways Valencia is the ideal manifestation of Spain in city form. Historic but innovative, sun-baked with gorgeous Mediterranean-fronted beaches, and a grand tradition of incredible food. Paella, anyone?

March brings mild temperatures, long bright days and crystal clear nights. Perfect conditions for a festival—Valencia’s biggest, in fact. Las Fallas , the bonfire festival , kicks off in late February with a huge firework display to signify the start of spring. It’s March 15th when things really heat up, however.

Across the city, falleros erect enormous and incredibly elaborate papier-mache towers —the ninots. Many artists spend all year creating their ninots, knowing exactly what will happen to them. Judged over three days, they’re then set alight in a blaze of pyrotechnic glory. And all the while extravagant parades, outdoor concerts and 24-hour street parties thrum across the city. Spain at its very best. 

8. Pesaro, Italy

• Why visit in March? It’s the Italian capital of culture for 2024.

Among the big-hitting cities of Italy, lesser-known Pesaro has been appointed its Capital of Culture in 2024. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, this seaside resort is a haven of culture and nature in the historic Marche region.

With the slow dawning of spring in March, Pesaro awakens from its winter slumber. The birthplace of Rossini, it’s recognised by UNESCO as a creative city for music thanks to its promotion and revival of his music. See for yourself with a tour of Casa Rossini where multimedia exhibits bring his story and music to life.

On your city stroll, drop into Musei Civici in the aristocratic Palazzo Mosca , where striking artworks jostle with architectural splendor. Pass through the Ducal Palace and Duomo before stopping to admire Arnaldo Pomodoro’s stunning globe installation, framed perfectly by the setting sun.

Fly into nearby Rimini and hire a car to make the most of the Marche region—and don’t miss Monte San Bartolo Natural Park surrounding Pesaro.

9. Madrid, Spain

Before temperatures reach the furnace-hot levels of summer, spring is the best time to visit Spain’s capital. With days lengthening and temperatures climbing, Madrid’s cherry blossoms burst into bloom. The biggest and best shows unfold in Parque Quinta de los Molinos and El Retiro , the city’s most famous green space.

The cold veneer of winter fades not only from the weather but also the inhabitants. Chairs and tables spill onto the streets from bars and restaurants. Locals emerge from hibernation to fill the sidewalks, raise a glass and gorge on tapas. As the evening chill descends, Madrid only warms up with revelry and dance.

As with any historic European capital, Madrid is alive with culture and attractions. Architecture of the Belle Époque, the Palacios Real and Cristal , the Reina Sofia modern art museum—home to Picasso’s ‘Guernica’— to name but a few.  

10. Narvik, Norway

Spring may be spreading across much of Europe, but in the northern reaches of Norway temperatures are still freezing. March brings two special events to the town of Narvik: the sun breaks the horizon for the first time since fall and the Vinterfestuka kicks off.

The former is a moment of celebration—the dawn of the New Year and a healthy dose of much-needed vitamin D. The latter is the Winter Festival , a party to shake the pillars of Valhalla. From March 8th the city erupts into ten days of non-stop festival fun and it’s an awesome place to be. 

Eighteenth century opulence and hedonism is the theme of the event. Dress in fine period clothes, join costume parades and raucous concerts, visit theaters and art exhibitions. Food fries, drinks flow and streets pulse with activity. The warmth of the new sun is reflected in the hospitality of the locals.

Best tropical place to travel in March

Of all the spring festivals that happen around the world, none is embraced like the Hindu festival of Holi . Celebrating love and the arrival of spring, it’s best known as the Festival of Colors. Although it engulfs the whole of India, there are few better places to enjoy it than tropical Goa, also known as the Land of Beaches. 

Holi, often called Shigmo in Goa—is celebrated on the first spring full moon: March 25th in 2024. The night before sees huge parties and celebrations erupt along the Goan coast. The main event happens the next morning when everywhere (and I mean everywhere) is blanketed in a riot of colors. Crowds take to the streets armed with bags of vivid powder dyes, liberally tossed into the air and sprayed from water pistols until the world is a rainbow.

Everyone gets involved with Anjuna and Ponda particularly good fun. My choice is Vagator , however, thanks to its gorgeous beaches and outrageous parties.

Where to travel in March

Head into spring with these festival-focused destinations, from California to Ireland. There’s no better month to sample the riotous colours of India, take to the Nile by cruise or join in the wine harvest in the vineyards of the Southern Hemisphere.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the month of March heralds the arrival of spring — with longer days and a beckoning back to the great outdoors. Cherry blossoms burst into blushing colour from Japan to Vancouver and Washington, DC, which has its famous al fresco Japanese sakura festivals and park picnics falling toward the end of the month. Black and grizzly bears rise from their winter beds in places like Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park, while rare Royal Bengal tigers traipse through India’s wildlife parks in search of water during the dry season, making them easier to spot.

It isn’t just wildlife that’s coming out to play. A slew of cultural and religious festivals feature this month throughout the world — in India revellers are painted technicolour during the annual Holi festival. St David’s Day brings traditional dress, daffodils and parades to Wales, while Ireland’s rowdier equivalent of St Patrick’s Day sees folk music, decorated floats and swathes of green pride.

March marks the shoulder season throughout much of the world, allowing affordable trips without the crowds. Surfers can catch guaranteed swells in spots like Morocco, Portugal and Hawaii, while the southern Mediterranean is a hiker’s heaven. The long rains are pummelling Eastern Africa, but strike north to Egypt, where the weather is fine for serene Nile cruises to ancient temples.

Rainbowed revellers take to streets in India and throw gulal pigments into the air to celebrate springtime and the triumph of good over evil during Holi, an annual Hindu festival of colour. There are large public gatherings in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Jaipur, with street food, DJs, singing and dancing. A more serene congregation is set in the Himalayan foothills this month. The week-long International Yoga Festival in Rishikesh features talks from spiritual leaders, daily yoga classes and cultural performances. After spiritual ascension, climb the vertiginous peaks as flora begins to bloom and crowds remain thin.

March is also considered one of the top times of year for a tiger-spotting safari. Pad over to the wilderness of Ranthambore National Park in central India, where elusive Royal Bengal tigers lope across grassy meadows and ancient tombs. Temperatures are pleasantly mild and the end of the dry season means vegetation is sparse, forcing these big cats out into the open in search of a drink from shrinking watering holes.

Responsible tip:   There are just 4,500 wild tigers in the world and over half of them call India home. Poaching is still a serious threat to their survival, so support conservation efforts for these endangered cats by booking with responsible companies. Travel Operators for Tigers is a great online resource with a list of travel companies, certified eco-friendly accommodation, as well as Indian tiger reserves, parks and sanctuaries.

2. Victoria, Australia

Just an hour outside Melbourne, over 80 vineyards in the Yarra Valley are entering its harvest season, where vast rows of fruit will be fermented into deep Cabernet Sauvignons and sippable Chardonnays. Taste the terroir as you watch clusters collected from the fields. Along the route are boutique family-owned boltholes like Tokar Estate and behemoth outposts like Domaine Chandon .  

Meanwhile, the capital has bags of cultural clout this month as huge events set up shop: the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival , Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne Fashion Festival . The free Moomba Long Weekend , a community event, also returns each March with parades, fireworks and live music. Pair the cosmopolitan with the coastal on the Great Ocean Road. This wild and windswept route hugging the southern shores is quieter this month with a comfortably warm centigrade — ideal conditions for driving past coastal cliffs, stopping by plunging waterfalls and spotting koalas clinging to gum groves.

Learn about Aboriginal peoples’ connection to the city and their experiences since colonisation. Tourism Australia also has a list of Aboriginal cultural experiences in Melbourne , which range from guided Royal Botanic Gardens walks to artwork displayed at Melbourne Museum’s Birrarung Gallery .

3. Central Valley, California

The almond trees of California’s Central Valley, which spans an area of 1.5 million acres, produce 80% of the world’s almonds and every year, from mid-February to mid-March, the valley’s blooming trees turn the landscape into a sea of light pink and white.

Heading out on the Almond Blossom Cruise self-guided driving tour is a great way to experience this seasonal wonder from the comfort of your own car — or, for those who prefer to sit back and enjoy the views while someone else does the driving, there are bus companies that offer tours along the route, too.

After admiring the orchards of flowering almond trees, visit one of California’s lesser-known wine regions — Lodi. Although not as famous as Napa or Sonoma, Lodi is home to more than 60 wineries and boasts no less than seven different American Viticultural Areas — designated wine grape-growing regions   — that enable local winemakers to grow a multitude of varieties of grapes. This makes Lodi very different from the vast majority of wine regions around the world.

Responsible tip: Lodi is the birthplace of one of the US’s earliest sustainable wine-growing certification programmes, known as Lodi Rules . Vineyards such as Adkins Family Vineyards use 100% solar power in creating their wine.

Get behind the wheel on the wind-lashed Wild Atlantic Way. This epic road trip along Ireland’s west coast steers past craggy coastlines and mist-ringed mountains. This month, the Atlantic puffin returns to the route’s crags to nest on the Cliffs of Moher, Horn Head, Great Saltee Island and the Skelligs. Meanwhile, swells are a sure thing near Donegal and Sligo for surfers. Those that prefer drier conditions can take to coastal trails for hillsides flecked with newborn lambs and forests carpeted with bluebells.

It’s not only the landscape greening up this month. St Patrick’s Day paints the country emerald every 17 March. Festivities span five days in Dublin with float-filled parades, contemporary art exhibitions, theatre performances, literature events and fiddle- and flute-filled live music. Iconic buildings are bathed in green at nightfall and revellers blend in, too, for the traditional ‘wearing of the green’. There’s also good craic in medieval Kilkenny, whose five-day TradFest features concerts, a music trail, a themed parade, street food, art workshops and a firework display.

Responsible tip: Sustainable Travel Ireland has a certification system that encompasses tour operators, attractions, activity centres, accommodation providers and food producers. There’s a list on their website, where you can search by region and company type. Set sail to the ancient world, where sandy temples, tombs and towering pyramids can all be reached along the meandering Nile. Take in everything from the rock-cut temples at Aswan to the Valley of the Kings burial grounds. Winter retreats this month, leaving warm weather and gentle breezes along the world’s longest river, while shoulder season prices and quieter crowds are ideal for exploring beyond the banks at the Pyramids of Giza, buzzy Cairo or the lapping Red Sea coast.

The Red Sea beaches bask under bags of sunshine with comfy topside weather for snorkelling, scuba diving and swimming this month too. Dive deep from a liveaboard — the Red Sea is one of the planet’s most diverse underwater worlds with vast varieties of colourful coral, fish and invertebrates, many of which are endemic. The waters are also home to graceful manta rays, numerous species of shark and shipwrecks. Splash into the protected Ras Mohammed Marine Park to explore the SS Thistlegorm   steamship, which has a truck in its hold and intact cargo on board.

Responsible tip:   Eco Egypt has developed a ‘Green List’ of sustainable and responsible hotels, ecolodges, products, diving centres and liveaboards. They promote a number of ecotourism pursuits like diving, birdwatching and cultural activities, which support the livelihoods of local Nubian and Bedouin tribespeople.

South Africa has its hottest month of the year in March. Average temperatures in Cape Town are around 26°C, but can reach 30°C. It hardly rains and is therefore suitable for a beach holiday.

9. Brazil: Carnival in Rio de Janeiro

One of the most popular travel destinations in March is Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro. The highlight in March is the carnival, when every few years it takes place in March instead of February. Besides ideal beach temperatures above 30 degrees, there is a lot to discover in Brazil from Iguaçu Falls to Caribbean cities.

10. Sri Lanka

For a beach holiday in March, Sri Lanka is well suited with hot temperatures above 30 degrees. However, by the end of the month, the rainy season sets in, even in the southwest of the island. Still, one of the best March holiday destinations in the area, if only for its diversity.

11. Netherlands Antilles: Curaçao

Yes, it is indeed an island and not a drink 😉 The Caribbean ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao combine the best of both worlds: Dutch flair and Caribbean climate. 26 degrees water temperature and 30 degrees air temperature and just 3 rainy days, because the dry season starts in March. 12. Costa Rica in March

March is the high season in Costa Rica. In the Central American country between the Atlantic and the Pacific, the winter half-year is the dry season. Costa Rica is known for its beautiful rainforests and wildlife reserves. It is also home to the highest concentration of volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere. Dry season means best bathing weather and also suitable for diving and snorkelling. Expect temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees. One of the best holiday destinations in March in Central America!

13. Oman: A real gem

Unlike the Emirates, Oman has managed to preserve its original flair. Mighty forts surrounded by date palms, bustling cattle markets and the endless desert are just some of the highlights of Oman. In March it is not yet too hot, but ideal for swimming in the sea or in one of the many wadis.

Party, beach and culture – you’ll find it all in Cuba. The Caribbean island welcomes you with an air temperature of over 30 degrees and a sea temperature of 25 degrees. It rains very little, which makes it one of the ideal travel destinations in March. From round trips in a classic car to a beach resort holiday with diving, horse riding and golf, there is something for everyone in Cuba.

Even better, shoulder seasons like spring usually offer an affordable way to combine low-season hotel rates and fewer crowds with high-season weather, a canny workaround for any value-seeking traveler.

We’ve pulled together some of the places to visit in March, including an alternative to cherry blossom-spotting (hint: come hungry) to the Caribbean ’s toniest superyacht race and a pyromaniac’s delight of a festival in Europe.

1. Modesto, California

March is great for: swapping cherry blossoms for a farmland stand-in.

California ’s agricultural heartlands are often eclipsed by their snazzier coastal counterparts , but pause to consider a trip to the Central Valley, home to some of America’s finest farmland—and in particular, almond groves.

The trees are planted across 1.5 million acres of land here, and a riot of pink and white flowers carpet the horizon from mid-February to mid-March. Modesto, a city with 120,000 acres of those groves, has cannily devised what it’s dubbed the Almond Blossom Cruise , a self-guided driving tour with two routes (and plenty of detours) that allow you to explore the area and see as many blossoms as you can; the western circuit is an hour or so, while the east will require up to three hours.

Stops include farm stands—pick up some tangy signature cheddar at Fiscalini —as well as restaurants and farms. Standouts include Rodin Farms and Roberts Ferry Nut Company, as both have groves that run right down to the parking lot line.

The 260-room hotel downtown is an affordable base, right off Highway 99 and within walking distance of many local landmarks—don’t miss the superbly restored McHenry Mansion, a Victorian-Italianate masterpiece dating back to the 1880s.

How to get to Modesto

Southwest’s your best bet, as it uses the nearest airport, Sacramento, as one of its national hubs, connecting the Californian capital with countless cities across the country from Palm Springs and St. Louis to Portland, OR. From there, it’s a 90-minute drive or so.

It takes about 40 pounds of powder and two hours to transform Chicago’s waters into a dazzling emerald, using a secret formula about which the city is understandably territorial.

2. Chicago, Illinois

March is great for: the ultimate Paddy’s party.

Is there anywhere else to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day other than Chicago ? After all, the Windy City goes beyond a massive parade (though there’s one of those, too.) No, the city, quite literally, transforms, as the main river here is dyed bright green on the Saturday before March 17 (this year, that’s March 15). It’s a fleeting change, as the ferocious water flows mean the color ebbs away within one to two days, so you’ll need to be here that weekend to see the maximum impact—take a cruise on the water for an up-close glimpse.

As for celebrations, there’s an endless assortment, whether the Irish American Heritage Center on the north side or the Shamrock’n The Block party in downtown’s West Loop, with a heated beer tent and lots of Irish dancing.

This funky boutique chainlet—now part of the Accor umbrella—is aptly named: Each of its sites acts as much as a gallery as a crash pad, a nod to the passions of its art-collecting philanthropist founders Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson. The four-year-old Chicago site is no exception, with work from local artists like Colleen Plumb ranged around the property, including its 10,000-square-foot onsite gallery.

ORD is a hub for not one but two airlines, United and American, with ample service across the country. But don’t dismiss the smaller, nippier Midway (MDW), which Southwest services to the likes of Houston, Sarasota, and Charleston, South Carolina.

This Bucket Regatta is a reminder that St Barts is an outdoorsy, active destination, too, with almost three quarters of the land here designated as a green zone, and so precluded from construction.

3. St. Barths

March is great for: seeing an alternative side to this party-powered island.

Sure, come to St. Barths to sashay ‘round the pool. But there are other reasons to visit this slice of France, just a short flight off the coast of St. Maarten—like the Bucket Regatta this month, which takes place from March 21-24.

This race is a four-day, invitation-only race that’s a point of pride for super-yachts worldwide. This year, there will be no yacht hop party, but instead a dockside bash at the Capitainerie on Saturday night for the ultimate mingler. If you’re not schmoozing or racing, though, it’s still a spectacular chance to see some of the world’s finest yachts performing at their peak, all on some of the bluest waters of the West Indies.

How to get to St Barths

Book a flight to SXM in St Maarten—there are countless services from the U.S. on everything from Spirit (FLL) to Sun Country (MSP). March is great for: a green season celebration.

March 21 is a momentous annual day in the Namibian calendar, as it marks the state’s independence from South Africa. It won freedom in 1990 after more than two decades of fighting—today the occasion is marked by a colorful parade, where citizens march and sing the national anthem, Namibia, Land of the Brave, which was composed by a Kalahari desert-based musician in the wake of independence.

Unlike much of sub-Saharan Africa, Namibia has much less likelihood of torrential downpours during this time. Its version of the green season remains drier than most, with the landscape here creating the dramatic dunescapes that have become synonymous with the country for safari-seekers.

March is great for: foodie pilgrims with a hunger to explore.

Melbourne ‘s fantastic food scene is mostly thanks to the fact that the surrounding state is such a superb produce source—much of its raw materials need only travel a few miles to the city’s restaurants. That’s all celebrated with the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival , which runs from March 15-24 and sees more than 300 different events as part of its official schedule.

Fed Square downtown’s deeded over to bakers and pâtissiers, complete with a wood-fired oven pop-up, while record-breaking stunts like the World’s Longest Brunch and Lunch (tables running almost 2,000 feet through the main gardens here) are intended to be fun ways to sample the cooking of top local chefs like Andrew McConnell. He’ll helm the kitchen for lunch while Indian cuisine will be spotlighted during brunch, including creations from fine dining champ Helly Raichura.

March is great for: a pioneering trip to a soon-to-explore spot.

Even though there’s enormous development planned in Saudi Arabia ‘s Red Sea— 50 hotels should be open within the next six years—the government aims to protect the reason it appeals, promising that the ground-up infrastructure will emphasize renewable energy and zero waste operations.

The peak period to visit ends in February, but the weather remains appealing this month thanks to the still-clear skies—ideal conditions for stargazing . Spend a night out in the dunes around a desert campfire, with local guides sharing stories and legends that connect the centuries-old culture here with the modern developments transforming Saudi Arabia at time-warping speed.

7. Denver, Colorado

March is great for: late-season skiing and bargain dining..

March is typically the snowiest month of the year in the Mile High City , often logging just under a foot of powder. Climate change has made that less predictable, but there’s still a chance to see the city under a romantic white blanket; this is a place that can more than function even in the trickiest of winters.

You can also choose to stay inside for Denver Restaurant Week , running from March 1-10, with prix fixe meals at many of the top spots here for between $25 and $55 per person. And don’t dismiss the chance to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day here, either: there’s a parade that’s among one of the largest in the country, with around 10,000 marchers and 200,000 spectators—this year, it’s being held on Sunday, March 16.

8. Mendoza, Argentina

March is great for: a southern hemisphere harvest festival.

More than 1,500 wineries are spread over the three growing areas of the Mendoza region: Maipu Valley, Luján de Cuyo, and Uco Valley. You’ll be able to sample and experience all of them in a single place during La Fiesta Nacional de Vendimia, a festival dating back to the 17th century that marks the beginning of the harvest season.

In early March, alongside parties, dance displays, and special dinners in local restaurants, the city hosts La Bendición de los Frutos, an event where a priest publicly blesses the harvest, as well as Via de la Reinas, a parade where a beauty queen from each of the 17 districts in the region rides around town on a specially designed float. This year, the festivities conclude on March 3, so barrel down at the start of the month to catch its climax.

9. Edmonton, Canada

March is great for: homegrown delights from the hop-growing hub of Canada.

More than 16,000 square miles of the Canadian province of Alberta are prairies, and one key crop grown in this vast landscape is barley. From March 8-9, the product of prairie-grown barley is celebrated via the local Craft Beer festival . There’s a thriving craft beer scene here mostly thanks to the change in law back in 2013, which removed a cap on small producers; as a result, there are now more than 100 operating in the province.

This two-day fest celebrates their output, with tastings as well as seminars and cooking demos. Half-day passes start at $15 while a VIP+ weekend-long entry is around $188 per person.

March is great for: satire and starchitecture.

For one thing, Valencia’s food scene is impressive—this is the birthplace of paella , after all. The cityscape is jaw dropping, too: It has been world-leading in sustainability , earning the title of European Green Capital for 2024 from the European Commission.

If you needed another incentive to consider a trip, then, this month’s Las Fallas Festival should be the clincher. It’s the most important in the city’s calendar, and runs from March 1-19. During this time, the city is festooned with papier-mâché figures, known as ninots, both traditional or satirical. All but two of them—saved by public vote on March 15—will be burned at the festival’s conclusion, the event known as La Crema.

La Palma, Canary Islands

It’s also a walkers’ island, where footpath signposts outnumber cars. Rock pools and waterfalls refresh flagging travellers, and the boutique hotel scene is surprisingly sharp. Seville, Spain

The south coast of Spain is a good bet year-round, but March is a time for Seville to shine. The Andalusian city has warmer temperatures than many popular European destinations, which can become unbearable during the summer months. In spring, you're less likely to face the crowds but can wander around with just a light jacket in hand. Spend your time eating and drinking your way through the city – tapas at El Rinconcillo followed by drinks at one of Seville's many rooftop bars is highly recommended.

Where to stay: Built specially for Seville’s 1929 Expo, Alfonso XIII was commissioned by the then king of Spain, who gave it his own name. Now, The hotel’s 148 rooms alternate Andalusian , Castilian and Moorish decorative styles, making this a beautiful and unusual choice. Meanwhile, Corral del Rey is a 16-room boutique divided across buildings on either side of the narrow street with which it shares its name. Two of the rooms have private pool terraces for a glass of wine while taking a dip.

San Diego, California

For a taste of sunny southern California without the crowds, San Diego can’t be beaten. It’s an eternal beach-bum city with a temperament permanently set to ‘chill’. Join the surfer dudes and VW vans at Ocean Beach, or cycle past perennial volleyball games along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, stopping now and then to sip a homespun brew (AleSmith, Green Flash, Ballast Point). It’s laid-back, yes, but not lazy: there’s plenty of energy in the city’s exploding street art-scene (try North Park, where even utility boxes have been given a paint job). Or get experimental at restaurants such as Wrench and Rodent (‘unorthodox nigiri and sashimi’) and the Gaslamp Quarter’s craft cocktail bars (find Noble Experiment behind a wall of kegs).

Where to stay: Les Artistes in Del Mar, an affordable converted motel with artist-themed rooms: the first-floor 'Gaugin' and 'Diego Rivera' both have baths. Or, if it's a story you're after, few hotels in America can claim as compelling history as the Hotel del Coronado (or ‘the Del’ to those in the know), which celebrates its 135th birthday in 2023. For living like a local, this converted loft should do the trick.

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

It’s peak season here, but with good reason. Longer, sunnier days are ideal for sailing , the best way to explore what are among the world’s clearest waters and whitest beaches. Living up to its name, Whitehaven, in the Great Barrier Reef and only accessible by boat, is covered in bone-white sand. The Whitsundays’ newest, most secluded retreat, Elysian, only has 10 rooms, so even at the busiest time of year, guests have their own piece of Eden. And by rooms, we really mean oceanfront villas , with Australian hardwood interiors and rainforest views. It’s almost impossible to leave, but do try, or you’ll miss out on twilight-yoga classes and swimming in the retreat’s private cove.

Where to stay: Hayman Island , a polished Great Barrier Reef hotel with brutalist architecture and softly sexy rooms. Alternatively, Daydream Island Resort is a breezy, barefoot retreat ideal for families. For something private, this apartment has impeccable views.

Garden Route, South Africa

There’s no better time than spring to meander the Garden Route . We’ve described driving the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape as South Africa’s greatest hit compilation and it’s true: absurdly beautiful beaches, ragged mountains, wine country, virgin forests, inland lakes and amazing wildlife, from whales and dolphins to the Big Five. March is blissfully temperate and falls neatly outside the high seasons. Do it right, and do it slow: the best bits aren’t in the driving but exploring outside the car, whether that’s canoeing through Garden Route National Park or hiking Robberg Nature Reserve’s wild and wonderful cliffs.

Where to stay: Imposing and grand, Ellerman House is both intensely private and incredibly warm, with one of the best private art collections in South Africa. In Hermanus, The Marine has a prime position, and is comfortable and upmarket.

Havana, Cuba

What is it about Havana that’s so enchanting? Is it really just cigars and classic cars? Or is it the sensually rag-tag mix of weathered Spanish mansions, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, punchy food and grande dame hotels? It’s all of it, of course. Tick off old-school experiences, such as sipping Daiquiris in Hemingway’s hangouts, salsa dancing and relaxing in the cigar room at Brando’s favourite, the Grand Packard; then hit up the newer spots: Salchipizza, a bakery from Michelin-starred chef Alberto González; pulled-pork crepes at Belview Art Café.

Where to stay: Casa de Miriam y Sinai is a fantastic first-floor flat oasis of calm and space, with three spacious rooms, one with a street-side balcony, which are spotless and have top-drawer bathrooms. The colourful creative Malecón 663 has individually-decorated rooms, a restaurant, several bars and a concept store.

Mergui Archipelago, Myanmar

There are around 800 islands in Myanmar’s Andaman Sea archipelago, and no places to stay. And that’s exactly what makes it special: it’s accessible, close to the border of Thailand , and yet completely remote. Populated only by the Moken people, settlements are few. Instead, there are just empty beaches, clumps of thick, primeval jungle and untouched coral reefs. The yachties’ version of Shangri-La, one can only visit by boat. With steady winds, clear waters and balmy temperatures, March is a great time for diving, particularly at the ominously named Shark Cave. Others can stick to trekking, getting up close to civets and crab-eating macaques.

St Martin, Caribbean

One island, two nations. That’s the appeal of St Martin, or St Maarten. The Dutch side is the party-hearty bit: casinos, the cruise-ship dock, duty-free malls. Amble to the French side, though, and things get more refined. There’s the pretty town of Marigot, and fine food (L’Auberge Gourmande, in a vintage Creole cottage, is the spot for escargot and veal). Most of the island’s buildings were flattened by 2017’s Hurricane Irma, but it’s been quick to rebuild. Capital Philipsburg is fully restored, and most of the big-ticket retreats have been revamped and reopened. (Belmond La Samanna’s new retro-chic look is a triumph.) Early March sees the Heineken Regatta blow into town with food stalls, bars and live concerts bringing the party to a specially constructed Regatta Village.

Where to stay: Overlooking an idyllic golden stretch of sand, Belmond La Samanna , is a sparkling resort located in St. Martin’s smartest neighbourhood. Those looking for something more private will appreciate this idyllic loft overlooking the perfectly turquoise waters.

Jaipur, India

The Pink City is a must-visit anyway, but come March it’s also the yellow city, the red city, the blue city and every-other-coloured city, due to the Holi festivities. Though you’ll certainly get covered in rainbow powder paint, breathe a sigh of relief that it’s not quite as wild here as in Delhi . In Jaipur, the vibe is more local gathering than en masse mania. Despite India’s signature chaos, there’s always been something very regal about Jaipur – the palaces, the temples, the forts – and you can add hotels to that list, too. Suján Rajmahal Palace just might be the last word in opulence, an actual palace that’s hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Jackie Onassis. It was recently refurbished with lavish, custom-designed wallpaper and fabrics.

Where to stay: Suján Rajmahal Palace is a gloriously revamped hotel with a colourful past. For grandeur, Fairmont Jaipur is a 255-room extravaganza set in terraced water gardens with Mughal-style pavilions and frangipani trees, while larger groups can rent their own castle on Airbnb .

20 Awesome Places to Visit in March in USA

Early spring is when you can enjoy iconic landscapes in manageable temperatures for less money than peak seasons, so I think it’s a win-win! From traveling around during March, here are my favourite spots to explore…

1. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

For a truly awe-inspiring experience, I’d recommend taking the winding dirt road through Antelope Valley in Southern California. Here, blankets of poppies carpet the ground in flames of red and orange, and 8 miles of foot trails weave through the captivating blooms. 

Sadly, I can’t second-guess Mother Nature, and weather conditions greatly influence the poppy crop. Still, they typically bloom for ten weeks between late February and early May and peak for around three weeks between late March and early April.

Witnessing this breathtaking display is unforgettable in a good year. I suggest staying informed by checking the Antelope Valley Nature Preserve website as your visit approaches, ensuring you have the most up-to-date information on the flowers and their blooming status.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

If, like me, you are a lover of literature, arts, and culture but not a fan of scorching heat and crowds, visit New Orleans this month. The city embraces the transition into spring with the big Mardi Gras celebrations beginning to wind down and many wonderful festivals emerging to replace them.

The Tennessee Williams Literary Festival brings together budding writers and established playwrights for a program of masterclasses and performances of original works, culminating with the famous ‘Stella’ shouting competition in The French Quarter.

The LGBTQIA community celebrates its literary heritage in the famous Saints and Sinners festival, which also takes place this month. Wednesday at the Square and Buku Festivals curate unique, immersive musical talents; plenty is going on for foodies, too.

New Orleans is a vibrant city that embodies the spirit of springtime, so it is no surprise that this is the perfect time to enjoy it! I would also recommend staying in one of the many interesting boutique hotels, making your stay even more special.

3. Golden Isles, Georgia

The Golden Isles are four beautiful barrier islands between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. The islands rise out of a vast area of marshlands, giving the appearance of one continuous stretch.

The Isles are a melting pot of cultures, and this is what I love about it! During this month,  gentle breezes and spring sunshine make it the perfect time to get out and explore nature before it becomes too hot and crowded.

I recommend strolling through shady woodland, picnicking on sandy beaches, and watching the sun sink over the horizon – bliss! 

Go nature spotting for rare Leatherback turtles, a plethora of birds, and leaping dolphins, or relax and enjoy some boutique shopping in Pier Village or fine dining in the quaint village of Redfern.

For original Victorian architecture and speciality shopping and dining, I suggest visiting historic downtown Brunswick, where brownstone townhouses and bright-colored awnings lend an old-fashioned vintage feel.

4. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

It’s not always sunny in Philadelphia, but there’s a good chance it will be bright and fresh this month. I personally think this is the perfect time to visit the city, temperatures average around 12 degrees in the day so take a jacket you’ll be fine! 

In my opinion, one of the loveliest sights this time of year is the swathes of cherry blossoms in West Fairmount Park. Here, y ou can enjoy a picnic and admire the manicured lawns, or stroll around the tranquil Japanese House and whimsical ponds and waterfalls, all under a fragrant canopy of blossom trees.

The springtime is also a great time to enjoy a craft beer in the early spring sunshine so I would highly recommend visiting one of the city’s many breweries and taking in some of the lovely historical streets in neighborhoods like Spring Gardens.

It’s also a great time to enjoy some local artists’ work in progress at Cherry Street Pier and hang out with arty types along the wonderful waterfront.

Drive-in movies are also a big thing in Philly; the milder temperatures mean lots of opportunities to see old and new cool films in this classic American way!

5. Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks is a truly vibrant river city in the very North of Alaska. It serves as the perfect base camp for the wilderness of Denali National Park…6 million acres of alpine forests, snow-capped mountains, and untouched nature.

The icy temperatures mean the crowds tend to come here in the summer, but in spring, you can see the city and surroundings at their finest, under the breathtaking colors of The Northern Lights! 

It is also the season of midnight sun, endless sunsets and sunrises, and the World Ice Art Competition. I would also recommend enjoying the ice museum, hot springs, hot coffee, and many unique adventure sports!

I also suggest trying your hand at Ice Skating, Cross Country Skiing, or safely spotting wildlife in the wilderness. If you are lucky, you might see Grizzly Bears, Black Bears, Wolves, Moose and Caribou, and maybe even a golden eagle!

6. Texas Hill Country

The Hill Country stretches splendidly between San Antonio and Austin, encompassing beautiful landscapes, historic towns and villages, natural wonders, and amazing wineries.

During this month the  temperatures are pleasant and the wildflowers are in full bloom, especially the Texas Bluebonnets, lupin-like and a stunning shade of electric blue they are the official state flower.

Nestled amongst meadows of wildflowers and gentle hills are several stunning historical towns of German heritage. There are many to choose from, depending on your preferences. I personally think Boerne is a great town with a wonderful cavern at its center and lots of quaint boutique shops and cafes lining its Main Street.

The very German city of Fredericksburg oozes Bavarian charm. Kerrville is one of the oldest settlements in Texas and is perfect for history buffs. Finally, I suggest not missing Lake McQueene, which has waters that are perfect for swimming. You don’t want to miss it!

The Texans love spring, so as you travel through Hill Country, expect plenty of cook-offs, festivals, and cultural events to keep you entertained!

7. Nantucket and Martha’s Vinyard, Massachusetts

I would highly recommend avoiding the hordes of deep-pocketed tourists and visiting this iconic destination in the springtime! This month is a wonderful time to visit Cape Cod, as it is when the majestic humpback whales reside in the blue waters around the islands.

Averaging between 40 and 50 feet long, seeing these amazing creatures propel themselves out of the water is something you’ll never forget! 

It won’t be hot, but that’s the trade-off of having the place virtually for yourself! Aside from the whales, I recommend just kicking back and enjoying the idyllic beaches, quaint fishing villages, sun-bleached harbor towns, and historic lighthouses for a much more reasonable price than during peak season.

You can also check out some of the legendary filming locations for Jaws on Martha’s Vinyard and get a glimpse of some of the crazy multi-million dollar summer estates of the rich and famous, all without battling through the crowds!

8. Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas

The park is now a beautiful expanse of unique landscapes carved out by Cedar Creek and packed with unusual bluffs and canyons. It also has an impressive 95-ft waterfall that tumbles from the 100-acre Lake Bailey, created by Damming the Creek.

This month’s weather is temperate, the trees bloom, and the sunsets are spectacular. Temperatures hover around 17 degrees this time of year.

There are several rustic cabins and the central Mather Lodge, all built in the 1930s and available for accommodation, as well as designated camping and glamping, so I recommend choosing one for a truly cozy vacation!

Many gorgeous trails traverse the park and there is boating and Kayaking on Bailey Lake as well as two outdoor pools. I honestly think it’s the perfect accessible spring escape for outdoors lovers who find bigger parks daunting.

• Hiking down to the base of Cedar Falls to admire one of the biggest waterfalls in the state.

9. The Tidal Basin, Washington D.C.

Each Spring, Washington D.C. ‘s tidal basin is transformed by acres of pink and white cherry blossoms, and I highly recommend a visit around this time!

Thousands of tourists are drawn to the nation’s capital yearly to witness the spectacle! Usually, the tree’s peak bloom is late March through early April.

To avoid heavy crowds and maximize beautiful photo opportunities, I recommend visiting the Tidal Basin early in the morning and catching the sun rising over D.C.’s iconic marbled monuments under blankets of fragrant petals! 

Then, I suggest using the rest of the day to explore the amazing city full of green spaces, awe-inspiring architecture, and wonderful museums and sculpture gardens. If you have limited time, I recommend an open-top bus that will take you around all the famous presidential monuments and Arlington Cemetary.

I would recommend visiting some historic districts such as Georgetown, a famous university with atmospheric steps used in The Exorcist and DuPont Circle for eclectic nightlife, exciting dining, and wonderful art in The Phillips Collection.

10. Kauai, Hawaii

A top vacation spot, I personally think this is the perfect time to enjoy Kauai’s lush vegetation and beautiful beaches without the summer crowds. Although Kauai is the wettest of the Hawaiian islands and March is still considered the rainy season, the rain typically comes in short bursts and the sun quickly returns.

If you aim for the end of the month you will likely experience little rain, warm temperatures, and lower prices as peak season begins in April. Although Kauai is small it is not called’ The Garden Island’ for nothing and its abundance of colorful blooms will not fail to delight!

Expect palm-fringed beaches, crystal clear waters, unique multi-colored canyons, rare wildlife, and plunging waterfalls…a little slice of paradise infused with the famed ‘Aloha’ spirit!

• Seeing the island from a fabulous helicopter tour overlooking the beach landscape.

• Flying through through the native forests on a zipline which was a very adrenaline-pumping experience!

11. Fontainebleau State Park, Louisiana

Treat yourself to a stay in an iconic wooden cabin on stilts in this beautiful State Park that stretches for 2,800 acres along the crystal shores of Lake Pontchartrain.

Historically a sugar plantation, Fontainebleau was named after the forest near Paris, the place of choice for centuries of French kings in their leisure time.

Of course, we commoners can enjoy the many peaceful pastimes on offer in the Louisiana version, it’s a popular spot for all things aquatic; boating, canoeing, swimming, and personally I would highly recommend just sunbathing on the unspoiled sandy beaches.

Visitors can stroll beneath the centuries-old oak trees and native cypresses or walk along the wooden pier to admire the lake’s crystal waters.

During this month,  the temperature is warm and the humidity fairly low, which makes it the perfect time to explore the 27 miles of hiking and biking trails along the Tammany Chase, which follows the route of the old railroad tracks.

I suggest bringing a picnic for a beautiful, tranquil day in idyllic surroundings, unbelievably less than an hour away from New Orleans!

12. Providence Canyon, Georgia

Georgia gets very hot in peak summer season and as it is not a massive park it can also get very crowded. For easier hiking temperatures and uncluttered photographs of the beautiful ‘Little Grand Canyon’ I think this month is the perfect month for a visit.

The park’s rock faces are especially spectacular due to the 143 varied shades that range from orange and red hues to pure white; catching the sun sinking behind them is a really special sight.

Visitors can enjoy 10 miles of trails that circumnavigate the canyon rim and take in some of the park’s other wonders, such as the cascading Providence waterfalls and the strange shells of old 1950s automobiles that are relics of another era.

For perfect clear night skies, I would highly recommend camping out in one of the areas around the canyons and witnessing the wonder of the stars without any light pollution to obscure them!

13. Atlanta, Georgia

Summer temperatures in Atlanta are pretty intense, so I personally think early spring is the perfect time to take advantage of this southern gem. As the Southeast’s cultural hub Atlanta is positively teeming with creativity, arts, and mind-blowing history, it’s also a foodie heaven!

Both buildings are now part of The Martin Luther King JR National Historical Park , and I think it’s a great place to stroll in springtime! Another beautiful place to admire this month in bloom is The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, whose landscaped grounds are budding with color in early spring.

The foodie scene in Atlanta reflects this passion and fusion of cultures and famous southern hospitality; you can find delicious and innovative food at every turn. I suggest leaving space for some Georgia Bourbon Pecan Pie from Pie Shop Downtown!

14. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Saguaro National Park is named for the iconic giant cactuses known to grow up to 78ft tall, although the average height is about 40ft.  Walking amidst these giants, especially as the sun sinks below the horizon, is an eerie and wonderful experience. For a great view of the Saguaro Forest, I suggest hiking up to the Valley View Overlook, which offers an amazing panoramic view of the Cacti.

If you want to get in amongst them, I would also recommend the Mica View Loop, which takes you right through the middle of these amazing plants! 

This month, you have the bonus of all the beautiful wildflowers in bloom, splashing the desert landscape with color. You’ll also find ancient petroglyphs and an array of wildlife, from bobcats to venomous Gila Monsters…I’d suggest giving both a respectably wide berth!

Remember the park covers almost 100,000 acres and is split in two by the city of Tucson, for the best cactus action I suggest heading for the smaller western portion.

15. Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park, Kansas

The badlands are a vast acreage of ancient wilderness that will take you back to when the Oglala Sioux tribe occupied the lands.

The landscape is arid and strange, with rare Niobrara Chalk outcrops rising from flat prairies like temples. The name ‘Little Jerusalem’ refers to a mile-long collection of these white rocks that rise in awe-inspiring 100 ft spires and cliffs, bringing to mind the ancient city.

During this month the temperature is mild and humidity low so I think it’s a great time to hike one of the two permanent trails and treat yourself to the best views without navigating summer crowds.

Aside from Little Jerusalem, there have been traces of life dating back as far as 85 million years, so I highly recommend looking out for amazing fossils of ancient giant clams and oysters!

• Experiencing a Ranger-Guided Backcountry Hike, where I explored the off-trail paths and saw a different perspective of the rock formations.
• Going on the short Overlook trail which provides breathtaking views across the park.
• Walking the Life on the Rocks Trail and admiring two panoramic viewpoints along the natural, chalky rock surface path.

16. San Diego, California

I think San Diego is awesome for many reasons: it’s beautiful, laid back, rich in maritime history, and surrounded by gorgeous swathes of ocean and parkland!

During this month you can catch some amazing festivals such as Paddy’s Day and The Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival and enjoy the city’s many outdoor delights in the sunshine.

You’ll also get better rates on flights and accommodation by avoiding peak season F or totally chilled-out bohemian vibes I highly recommend Ocean Beach for cheap and delicious Mexican food, killer margaritas, and a real new wave ‘summer of love’/ surfy atmosphere.

Just out of the city, nature lovers will delight at the carpets of wildflowers in Anza Borrego Desert State Park or the flower fields at Carlsbad Ranch. It is also the perfect time to catch the immense Gray Whales on their migration back north.

I would suggest driving along the historic Route 101 and seeing how many you can spot or taking an organized tour from the marina.

17. Arches National Park, Utah

With intolerable summer temperatures of up to 100 degrees, The Arches National Park’s peak season is often unbearable for those not accustomed to the heat.

Add crowds to that; no matter how fabulous the landscape is, it can be a miserable experience! I personally think it’s wiser instead to head to the iconic park in early spring when temperatures are far more pleasant, and the crowds are yet to arrive.

The Arche’s strange prehistoric landscape has become synonymous with Utah, and the instantly recognizable ‘Delicate Arch’ is now the symbol for the whole state. With over 2000 of these otherworldly stone arches and relics of the nomadic Ute tribe, there is plenty to explore across the 119 square miles of the reserve! 

Most trails are short and accessible except The Devils Garden Primitive Trail, which requires a slightly more seasoned hiker. For the ultimate Arches experience, I recommend trying to hit the park at sunset and seeing the whole thing cast in an ethereal orange glow. It is absolutely beautiful!

18. Palm Springs, California

If you fancy yourself a bit of a hipster you’d better get to Palm Springs, a cool and artsy city long favored by the Hollywood jet-set for its glamorous elegance, sunshine, and healing springs.

The city, nestled in the beautiful Coachella Valley between 4 mountain ranges is particularly notable for its many examples of mid-century modern architecture, swanky boutique shopping, and world-class art….and golf of course.

While you’re there, I would suggest you don’t miss the amazing aerial tramway for stunning views across the entire valley, perhaps a mountaintop lunch, or the amazing Sunnylands Public Gardens and Mansion.

Although much of the mid-century architecture belongs to private owners you can still take in some amazing examples by taking a tour through the Tennis Club and Araby Cove districts.

There are so many things to do but a visit to Palm Springs would not be complete without making the most of alfresco dining in the city’s beautiful restaurants…my little tip, go for ones that are tucked away off main tourist routes and you’ll get superior quality for a fraction of the price.

19. Sedona, Arizona

The desert town of Sedona near Flagstaff, Arizona, is America’s answer to Glastonbury. During this month, I think hikers will delight in the perfect temperatures, rust-colored trails, and wildflowers in full bloom.

Surrounded by majestic red rock buttes and ancient pine forests, the town has become a haven for people in search of spiritual and metaphysical healing. The streets are lined with new-age shops and Native American-inspired treatment centers. I personally love it!

20. Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas

A great location for hikers or adventure vacation, Palo Duro Canyon on the Texas Panhandle is the second largest Canyon in the country and I personally think this is a great time to visit for warm temperatures, fewer crowds and less rain too! 

The park’s most iconic rock formation is called the lighthouse. It rises out of the ground in 300 ft of splendid rust-colored rock…in my opinion, the hugely popular lighthouse trail is the best way to view it and get amazing views out over the canyon.

I think it’s also worth extending your stay to overnight in one of the camping or glamping sites, as the night skies in this part of the world are truly phenomenal!

I would suggest looking out for the unmistakable herds of protected Texas Longhorn cattle that roam freely across the land. Adventure lovers might want to try the terrifying zip line that crosses the canyon between Dallas and New Mexico.

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

• Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
• Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
• Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
• Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

• Triad Pantomime Theater;
• Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
• White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

The nearby Atlantic Ocean that keeps winters mild can also cause fog to roll in, but somehow that only adds to the atmosphere, especially among the steep, cobbled streets of the Alfama district. For mighty mammals on and off an Indian Ocean jewel March is the last month of the winter dry season in the popular southwest of Sri Lanka , and as well as being a good time generally for a mix of beach holiday, cultural discoveries and wildlife-spotting in national parks, the first half of the month is also peak time for catching the blue whale migration off the south-coast beach town of Mirissa. Other whale species have a longer season here, and if you head on east to Yala National Park, you’ll encounter elephants and what is likely to be the world’s largest concentration of leopards. Four-poster beds and traditional Sri Lankan art give a heritage touch to Morning Star, a restful place despite its location on Mirissa’s coast road, and with a beach just a short stroll away.

Resorts range from traditional Alpine villages to purpose-built modern ski stations, but none bar Chamonix can boast the highest mountain in the Alps. For a cathartic end to winter in Spain’s third-largest city The Spanish festival calendar barely lets up: between carnival season (February or early March) and the parades of Holy Week (late March or April), the citizens of Valencia make their own fiery contribution with Fallas, or Falles in Valencian Catalan. Daily barrages of firecrackers sound out from March 1 up to the feast of St Joseph on the 19th, but it’s the last five days that see the city taken over by giant sculptures, many satirising recent events and all of which are ceremonially burnt at the end. With temperatures mainly in the mid-teens, it’s a mild if not especially quiet time for a city break in this trove of historic and modern architecture, and home of paella. For America’s own National Cherry Blossom Festival Whether or not the politics boil over, March in the US capital is usually mild, unlike the summer months in this notoriously humid city. The end of the month is peak season, but with good reason: clouds of pink cherry blossoms reflected in the Tidal Basin. As in Japan, which first gifted the trees more than a century ago, the timing can be unpredictable — the best flowering may even be in early April. But coming to Washington DC to find bare branches is no disaster when you have one of the world’s greatest concentrations of museums and fine monuments at the heart of it all. Head to the city of Agrigento and its ancient Greek temples in the first week of March for the Festa del Mandorlo in Fiore, with dances and delicacies celebrating the almond blossoms. Across Sicily it should be sunny and fresh, with average temperatures in the mid-teens: a great time to visit ahead of the tourist curve, although some hotels may not be open before Easter. For shoulder season in the islands that inspired Darwin There’s no bad time to visit the Galapagos: their equatorial position keeps temperatures from big swings, and even the December–May wet season is marked more by short showers than constant downpours. Timing then might involve human considerations, in avoiding popular holiday periods in December–January and July–August (cruise passengers note: seas can be choppy then). March is a fine time to be by the Arabian Sea, but it’s worth coming inland too, to see the circular fort and livestock market in the old capital Nizwa, mudbrick villages amid date plantations, and the great canyons around Jebel Akhdar, where mountain communities are beginning to harvest their prized damask roses. 15. Svalbard, Norway

Why go in March? For adventures in sun and snow on Arctic islands Longyearbyen is the world’s northernmost settlement that visitors can get to (relatively) easily and on March 8 it welcomes the sun back. Norway ’s Arctic archipelago of Svalbard actually leaves polar night behind in February — it’s just that the mountain walls flanking its main town continue to block the low sun. March temperatures can be unpredictable, but for those who want to try winter activities in single rather than double digits below zero, this is usually a great month for dog-sledding, snowmobiling and (freeze permitting) ice cave tours, as daylight rapidly conquers the skies. You can still have full-service comforts this far north, as shown by Funken Lodge — on a hillside overlooking Longyearbyen’s valley, with a 300-strong wine list in the restaurant.

16. Paphos, Cyprus

Why go in March? For divine walks in the eastern Mediterranean If you’re looking to emulate the goddess Aphrodite, said to have been born in the waves along the coast near Paphos, you’re better off visiting later in spring for less chilly bathing. But if your priority in Cyprus is touring the remains of ancient temples and taking hikes in the mountains with wildflowers bursting forth all around, then come in March, when seaside temperatures are mostly in the high teens and the sun is a friend to outdoor activities. Not all hotels will be open yet, but you’ll certainly be ahead of the crowds. West of the beach resort-cum-heritage site of Paphos lies the Akamas Peninsula, a national park with glorious hikes — as far away from Ayia Napa as you can get on the island. The first five-star hotel in Paphos when it opened in 1985, Annabelle is still a winner, with its large seaside gardens, through which weave a series of palm-shaded pools.

17. Sydney, Australia

Why go in March? For an Indian summer on the Pacific Summer takes its slow leave from Sydney across the month — though visitors from more sun-deprived climes aren’t likely to feel short-changed. With sea temperatures still at max, there are many days yet for splashing about on the city’s legendary beaches. School holidays don’t start until early April, so it’s not a crowded time, with the possible exception of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, right at the start of March. In even-numbered years, the three-month long Biennale of Sydney arts festival kicks off in mid-March. More moderate sun makes this an ideal time for activities low on shade — time to try the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb? — and if you’re using Sydney as a gateway to the rest of Australia , while the tropical far north of the country is still in rainy season, you’re good to go everywhere else. Mrs Banks Hotel was once a bank. Built in 1914, it has suavely styled rooms in the Paddington neighbourhood, near Centennial Park and Sydney Cricket Ground.

18. Atlantic Coast, The Gambia

Why go in March? For reliably sunny days in mainland Africa’s smallest nation When a continued cold spell drives you to seek an instant blast of heat in March, consider the western end of the African continent — rain is a rarity in March, unlike in much of eastern and central Africa. The Gambia is one of the world’s oddest-shaped countries, thanks to borders set in the colonial era: it’s essentially 200 miles of languid riverbanks ending in a short but beach-blessed stretch of Atlantic shore. Many visitors never leave the resorts that cluster here, between Bakau and Kololi, but venture just a short distance inland and you’ll find forest reserves and mangroves visited by a fabulous variety of migratory birds. The adult-only Kalimba Beach Resort follows a contemporary African design, and has a series of long pools zigzagging through the complex.

Why go in March? For shamrocks galore across a Great Lakes metropolis For St Patrick’s Day celebrations, look not to Ireland but to this skyscraper-studded city on the shores of Lake Michigan. The downtown stretch of the Chicago River is given a lurid but allegedly harmless green dye job for the occasion (if not the 17th itself, then a nearby weekend), and parades are held. You can also expect Irish dancing, festive food and emerald-hued drinks. While the rest of March is not a particularly balmy time in the Windy City, Chicago does have plentiful indoor attractions, from world-class art collections to comedy clubs. The Publishing House has 11 rooms inspired by Chicago’s literary history inside a 1909 brick building in the West Loop, a formerly industrial neighbourhood now with a burgeoning dining scene.

20. Taipei, Taiwan

Why go in March? For exploring jungles — both urban and natural Taiwan’s southern half stretches into the tropics, and both temperatures and rainfall increase between January and August. Catch the island at its climatic mid-point in March and April to best appreciate both its cities and forested mountains. In Taipei it certainly makes for a less sweaty hike up Elephant Mountain to admire the sunset over the capital’s skyline, and the same goes for trails to hilltop temples straight out of a Chinese landscape painting in the gorges of Taroko National Park. Temperatures should still be in the teens if you stay out late among the night market food stalls. The Amba Taipei Songshan enjoys sightlines to capital landmarks and proximity to the famed Raohe Night Market.

21. Munich, Germany

Why go in March? For the city’s other beer festival Everyone’s heard of Oktoberfest but for a flavour of Munich ’s other big beer festival, you have to visit in March. Starkbierzeit, or strong beer season, celebrates the tapping of the first Starkbier kegs. These high-alcohol beers were first brewed during the 17th century by monks who drank them during Lent. Today, they’re a great excuse to enjoy around three weeks of festivities at a particularly gloomy time of the year. And should you feel the need for something a little less boisterous, Munich’s churches are particularly dazzling too. Located in the heart of the old town, DO & CO Hotel München is just steps from the city’s cathedral.

22. Cape Town, South Africa

Why go in March? For spectacular hikes March in Cape Town means warm, sunny days with little chance of rain. Compared to the peak summer months, temperatures will have dropped too, marking the start of the hiking season. Table Mountain is the natural pick. There are some 350 trails suitable for different abilities, with viewpoints taking in every vantage point from breathtaking gorges to the mesmerising coastline. And for a post-hike celebration? Hit the beaches for refreshing waves or enjoy the city’s vibrant food scene. As for somewhere to stay, it’s hard to beat Radisson RED V&A Waterfront for price and location, just a short walk from Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.

C hristmas is a festive season that’s already unique unto itself, but it never hurts to throw a little fun into the mix! We’ve asked some of our favorite travel writers to share what they think are the best places to go for Christmas in the USA (we’ve already covered the best places to celebrate Christmas around the world ). These recommendations for where to go for the Christmas holiday in the United States have my family wanting to book tickets and visit every Christmas destination on the list!

Where to Go for Christmas in the USA

Holiday events in the south, 1. atlanta, georgia.

As a native Atlantan, the Christmas season is easily my favorite time of year. There are so many different things to do around the city.

For Christmas light displays, there’s the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s popular Garden Nights, Holiday Lights and Lake Lanier Islands’ Lakeside Lights Spectacular. There’s also Stone Mountain Christmas, where a whole village is lit up with holiday cheer.

Be sure to take a day trip to Callaway Gardens. Their “Fantasy in Lights” was named one of the Top 10 Christmas Light Displays in the World.

If culture is your thing, there’s the German Christkindl Market at Atlantic Station and the frou-frou designer rooms of Christmas at Callanwolde. You’ll also want to check out the Alliance Theatre’s annual production of A Christmas Carol or the Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker.

Looking for something on the quirky side? Try the Victorian Holiday at historic Oakland Cemetery, the Ugly Sweater Run for charity at Piedmont Park, or Horizon Theatre’s campy Waffle Palace Christmas.

2. Grapevine, Texas

What a better place to travel for Christmas than Grapevine, Texas , the Christmas Capital of Texas? This small town is big on holiday fun, with more than 1,400 events in 40 days. Christmas in Texas is amazing!

Holiday activities in Grapevine include musical light shows and holiday movie nights. There’s the Parade of Lights and the North Pole Express on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, complete with a visit from Santa!

Some of my favorite activities included making my own Christmas ornament at Vento Glass Blowing Studio and sampling the hot chocolate bar at Dr. Sue’s Chocolate. And a must is singing along to some of my favorite Christmas carols during a concert at the Palace Theatre!

For those looking for fun photos to commemorate the holidays, head to Liberty Park in downtown Grapevine, which gets decked out with fun decorations for the holidays. Sit with Santa, sneak a kiss at the Mistletoe Booth or pose with the oversized Christmas ornaments that are spread throughout the park. IT’s the perfect spot to snap a photo for your Christmas cards. 

Of course, you can’t go wrong with shopping in the many stores and boutiques in downtown Grapevine or just strolling along, taking in all the holiday decorations. 3. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Head to the middle of the country to experience a holiday trip like no other. Oklahoma City at Christmastime is surprisingly modern, chic, and a foodie’s paradise.

To start off, visit the Holiday Pop-Up Shops, which offer incredible local shopping inside makeshift igloos. Bring your pocketbook!

Then, stop by Katiebug’s Sips & Sweets for gourmet hot chocolate or some of their famous homemade marshmallows.

Finally, finish things off with a Christmas light extravagance, stroll or drive down Automobile Alley. It’s there you’ll spy the entire street lit with holiday lights strung from top to bottom!

For epic holiday fun, you can also head to Myriad Botanical Gardens. At Christmas, the glass conservatory glows with a light show will dazzle you, and an ice-skating rink will entice you outside.

But perhaps the most beautiful spot to visit during the holidays in OKC is none other than the Oklahoma City National Memorial. A Christmas wreath is set upon each chair honoring those who were killed in 1995 during the bombing.   – (Debra of Finding Debra)

4. Nashville, Tennessee

While a White Christmas is a rarity in Nashville , the holiday season in Music City is still bursting with all things holiday magic. It’s well worth a visit during the holiday season! There are tons of festive events, parades, and family-friendly holiday goodness. Here are a few of our favorites:

You’ll want to experience the Country Christmas at The Gaylord Opryland Resort , where the entire hotel is transformed into a winter wonderland. There are magical light displays throughout the hotel (free to the public), a holiday Seuss-themed playground made entirely of ice, holiday activities, music performances, and different events all season long!

We also love Cheekwood’s Holiday Lights, where millions of bulbs are strung throughout the mansion and botanical gardens. Cheekwood also hosts Santa’s live reindeer, and some weekends, the jolly old elf himself makes an appearance, too! There are s’more’s pits, holiday carolers, stalls selling hot chocolate, and hot toddies for those (occasionally) chilly Nashville nights.

Holiday markets pop up throughout the city, and horse and carriage rides flock to local neighborhoods for more light viewing. You can attend a sweet family holiday parade downtown to start the season or plan a trip on the North Pole Express Excursion Train run by the Tennessee Central Railway Museum.  – (Sarah at The Wandering Rumpus )

5. Orlando, Florida (Walt Disney World at Christmas)

We absolutely love Walt Disney World during the holiday season . There’s something just so magical about seeing the theme parks and hotels all decked out for the holidays. Where else will you find so many Christmas attractions for kids?

The week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest times of the year to visit Disney World. Parks are decorated as early as November. We have found that the first couple of weeks of December is one of the least-crowded times to visit.

Don’t miss Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. The parades are Christmas-themed, and there are special holiday treats. There are nightly fireworks set to festive holiday music and Christmas carols to keep you in the holiday spirit!

The weather in Orlando can be unpredictable at that time of year, but chilly in Florida is still a lot warmer than in many other places. Plus, seeing Cinderella’s Castle sparkle in holiday lights will warm up even the Grinchiest heart. 6. Pawley’s Island, South Carolina

Located 70 miles north of Charleston and 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach, Pawleys Island is the perfect South Carolina getaway . From the laid-back lifestyle to untouched beaches, it’s amazing to be there with the little ones during the holidays!

The Brookgreen Gardens Nights of a Thousand Candles event, features hand-lit candles, holiday lights, and music. It’s a bucket list destination for anyone that loves Christmas! Brookgreen Gardens is a 9,100-acre sculpture garden and wildlife preserve.

Atalaya Castle is next, but be sure to listen to the audio tour, which will help you appreciate it even more! We also recommend visiting Atalaya before Brookgreen Gardens, as the owners donated that land, and a lot of Anna Hyatt Huntington’s sculptures are there (it just adds more depth and understanding to the experience!).

Huntington Beach State Park is around the corner from Atalaya Castle, and every New Year’s Day, there’s a 2-mile hike led by a park ranger, which is great to do with kids! – (Dominique of Well Traveled Child)

7. Oxford, Mississippi

From a charming Holiday Village filled with gingerbread houses to a newly launched Peppermint Trail, the quaint town of Oxford, MS is the perfect place to spend the holidays.

As the temperatures begin to drop, this college town transforms into Santa’s workshop at the North Pole. Several family-friendly events and shows we recommend are:

• Christmas Parade:  Don’t miss the Oxford Christmas Parade with its festive Seuss-theme related floats, holiday music, and Santa’s arrival!
• Holly Jolly Holidays : Holly Jolly Holidays captures the spirit of the season with festive experiences that include visits with Santa, ice skating, lighting of the tree and the Peppermint Trail, which is literally a trail of peppermints on the town’s sidewalks leading to some peppermint treats (think sweets, coffee, cocktails, and more).
• Holiday Village:  Located at the Ford House, community members and civic groups show off their Gingerbread creations, while guests can also find a miniature village with a working train, a holiday-themed LEGO house, a mailbox for Santa, a decorated tree.
• Peppermint Bear and the Toy Elves:  Theatre Oxford join in the fun with their family-friendly musical, Peppermint Bear and the Toy Elves , which is sure to please all ages.

8. Alpine, Georgia

If you are looking for a small town to visit at Christmas , head to Alpine Helen in the Northeast Georgia mountains. This tiny town is so magical that two Lifetime Christmas movies have been filmed here.

From the day after Thanksgiving through mid-February, this picturesque Bavarian village is dressed up and illuminated. Visitors come from all around to see the festive shop windows and streets, savor authentic German beer and cuisine, and do some Christmas shopping.

Take in the magic at the Annual Lighting of the Village in Edelweiss River Park. The town’s 20-foot Christmas tree is bedazzled with 8,000 lights and 800+ ornaments. Everyone gathers to listen to local musicians before Santa’s arrival!

Don’t miss the Christkindlmarkt at the Marktplatz a traditional German event with everything from unique gifts to an assortment of food, drinks and candied treats.

Another holiday favorite is the Victorian Christmas in the historic settlement of Sautee-Nacoochee. At the  Hardman Farm State Historic Site the manor is decked out in holiday décor and docents dress in their finest 1870s clothes. You will also find live music, wagon rides, caroling, and s’mores.

Holiday Celebrations in the Midwest

9. chicago, illinois.

We think that the Windy City is one of the best places to go for Christmas with kids. Holiday festivities kick off with the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival the week before Thanksgiving. Ice skating is a huge attraction in the city. There’s a gorgeous outdoor rink at the Peninsula Chicago , and the skating ribbon at Maggie Daley Park is one of the best.

Don’t miss the Chicago holiday season highlight –  the traditional German Christkindl Market in Daley Plaza. There’s a Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas shop with hand-crafted ornaments, some glühwein, and even Santa and the Christkind. Be sure to go on weekdays early in the season or first thing in the morning to avoid crowds.

Those looking for more cultured events should head to one of the local theaters for the Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, or It’s a Wonderful Life (performed as an interactive 1940s radio show!).

Want to get your girlfriends together? Try a holiday tea at The Drake , The Ritz , or the Russian Tea Room. The Thorne Miniature Rooms at the Art Institute are decorated for the holidays and are a fun treat for all ages.

Want to head outside? Don’t miss the Morton Arboretum’s Illumination: Tree Lights, with its completely decorated trees and holiday musical accompaniment.

And the Chicago Botanic Garden has Lightscape, an incredible display of lights that all ages will enjoy!

10. Indianapolis, Indiana

More than 100,000 people will gather on Monument Circle the Friday after Thanksgiving to celebrate the lighting of 4,784 lights strung from the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors monument. Millions of sightseers will take in this brilliant spectacle throughout the holiday season, lit through early January.

Travelocity named the Circle of Lights one of the top 5 “must-see Christmas trees” in the nation. We think it’s one of the best places to go for Christmas in the USA.

Other Indianapolis attractions include the Winterlights winter wonderland at Newfields, with its beautifully decorated gardens, and Christmas at the Zoo , the oldest holiday lights exhibit at a zoo. – (Patricia at Savvy Traveling )

11. Santa Claus, Indiana

During the holiday season, a visit to Santa Claus, Indiana , goes unmatched, with parades, pancake breakfasts, light displays, and endless festive events taking center stage during their Christmas Celebration.

Local organizations get caught up in the holiday spirit with special events such as Storytime with Santa, gingerbread house contests, cookie baking, and more!

Discover the charm of this holiday town by sending a special letter to Santa at the original Santa Claus Post office and then exploring how the town got its iconic name at the Santa Claus Museum and Village.

Peer inside the original church that’s been decked out for the holidays before snapping a photo of the impressive 22-ft solid concrete Santa Claus Statue.

Venture to Santa’s Candy Castle to attempt their Fire & Ice Challenge, which features their signature frozen hot chocolate and “Fire” popcorn! Then end the day roasting chestnuts over an open fire.

Holiday Events in the West

12. colorado springs, colorado.

If you haven’t visited Colorado Springs for Christmas , your family is missing out on so many holiday things to do. It’s one of the best Christmas towns, just 90 minutes from Denver, offering that getaway feeling without the long drive or flight. Yet for families not living in Colorado, their airport is small and easy to navigate without long security lines.

You can visit Santa and his elves at the North Pole, Home of Santa’s Workshop, a Christmas-themed mountain amusement park with rides and attractions. Open year-round, it is located on the Pikes Peak Highway, giving your family amazing views!

There are many festive things to do in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region. Ride the Royal Gorge Railroad with Santa and do some gift shopping at the Holiday Market.

Take the kids to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the highest-altitude zoo in the US, for their electric safari with sparkling lights. Or experience a winter wonderland with a sleigh ride at the Lazy C Guest Ranch.

During the holidays, splurge on a room at The Broadmoor , where the entire property is bathed in Christmas lights, and the hotel lobby features themed holiday displays! 13. Scottsdale, Arizona

One of our favorite places to spend the holiday season is Scottsdale, Arizona. There’s nothing quite like celebrating in the desert.

Experience a Southwestern holiday tradition at the Desert Botanical Garden’s Las Noches de Las Luminarias . It features over 8,000 hand-lit luminarias (small bags weighted with sand and a votive candle inside), live music, and festive drinks.

Another fun idea is climbing aboard Verde Canyon Railway’s Christmas Train for a magical ride to the North Pole.

Scottsdale resorts go all out with the decorations, but our favorite by far is Christmas at the Princess . The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess goes all out with holiday decor which covers everything from the lobby to the pool area and beyond.

Hang out by the ice rink, make s’mores, ride a Ferris wheel, and catch their choreographed light show. Don’t miss the all new Aurora Ice Lounge – an ice bar chilled to a cool 20 degrees, and so much more. If you are looking for an amazing Christmas hotel , this is the one to book!

Jackson, Wyoming is a picturesque mountain town in the foothills of the majestic Teton Mountain Range in the valley known as Jackson Hole.

This charming ski town is even more magical around Christmas and popular among avid skiers and snowboarders. White lights are beautifully strung across the streets and illuminate the town square.

Winters in Jackson Hole can get extremely cold. Despite the cold temperatures, a stroll down the covered, wooden sidewalks in downtown Jackson is a great way to spend a brisk winter afternoon. Duck into a coffee shop, grab a hot cocoa, or shop for locally made crafts in one of Jackson’s many mom-and-pop shops.

At Christmas time, the historic Wort Hotel in the heart of Jackson is beautifully decorated with lit garland, poinsettias, and a large Christmas tree in the lobby. It’s the perfect place to stay for a cozy holiday getaway!

15. Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Santa may swap his sleigh for an outrigger canoe when dropping off gifts for the children of Kailua Kona, but that doesn’t mean a Hawaiian Christmas is without traditional trappings! You’ll find the historic village decked out with lights, tinsel, and Christmas trees.

Visitors may spot penguins and other Arctic creatures sporting grass skirts as well. The Kailua-Kona Community Christmas Parade kicks off the season. It’s sure to be a sight as it travels along Ali’l Drive, Kona’s main drag.

If you need a little snow during your Christmas Holiday, head to Mauna Kea. There won’t be enough powder to ski or snowboard, but you’ll get your fill. Tour companies provide visitors with warm gear, so there’s no need to pack it!

Traveling during Christmas time doesn’t mean your family has to forgo the Nutcracker Ballet or Christmas Eve services either. The West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy, accompanied by the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra, presents a visually stunning family-friendly Nutcracker production.

16. Las Vegas, Nevada

We think Las Vegas is one of the best family Christmas destinations in the USA. Many people think Las Vegas can’t be a Christmas destination, but it certainly is! You can find plenty of holiday spirit without the cold weather.

Walking around Las Vegas, you’ll feel the Christmas spirit everywhere. Even the light show at the Bellagio joins the festivities with holiday-themed music.

We recommend going ice skating at the LINQ Promenade. This would be the perfect time to ride the world’s largest Ferris wheel.

The Bellagio Conservatory changes its display to Christmas decorations, which will get your little ones excited for Santa. You can also take a trip to Magical Forest, where your kids can walk through tens of thousands of lights while enjoying some holiday treats.

Skip cooking this year and go to the many buffets on the strip. Everyone gets to eat what they want, and you don’t have to clean up the mess. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Families will love the Global Winter Wonderland in Las Vegas. It is the only time you can see the major attractions in the world in one place. Imagine seeing the White House, the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Egyptian Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, and the North Pole. 17. Leavenworth, Washington

Leavenworth is just a few hours away from Seattle, but as you pass thru the Cascade Mountains, you will feel transported to another country. The town is consistently voted one of the best places to go with kids for Christmas.

Surrounded by snow-covered peaks, this Bavarian-themed town feels truly magical at Christmas time. Not only will you enjoy beautiful Christmas lights on all of the Bavarian buildings on Front Street, but there’s a dramatic light display throughout the city park.

Kids will enjoy taking advantage of the sledding hill under the twinkling lights. Once they’ve worked up an appetite, grab a German sausage at Munchen Haus and then head to the Gingerbread Factory for hot chocolate and the most delicious gingerbread cookies.

18. San Francisco, California

San Francisco has no white Christmases thanks to its temperate winter weather. What the City by the Bay lacks in snow, however, it makes up for in holiday spirit! Christmas in California is always an incredible experience!

San Francisco’s holiday season begins after Thanksgiving with the enormous Union Square Christmas tree lighting. Union Square also erects a temporary ice-skating rink and plays home to Santa in the world’s second-largest Macy’s, which faces the square.

San Francisco is always a popular holiday travel destination, so the city’s finest hotels compete to outdo one another every year!

The Fairmont San Francisco builds an enormous 2-story gingerbread house in its lobby. The Westin St. Francis creates not one, but 2 castles of sweets in theirs. Many luxury hotels offer decadent holiday high teas on weekends, most of which are kid-friendly family traditions.

The holiday theater scene in San Francisco is always bustling as well. The San Francisco Ballet performs the Nutcracker annually, and the American Conservatory Theater’s yearly run of A Christmas Carol has been a tradition for over 40 years. –(Leslie at Trips with Tykes)

19. Seattle, Washington

While Seattle doesn’t always get a White Christmas, it’s definitely full of holiday cheer! There are so many kid-friendly Seattle Christmas activities that are totally worth a holiday vacation to Seattle. Enchant Christmas and Lumaze are two large-scale holiday light events with Christmas Markets.

There are also visits with Santa and epic light displays to check out. The Fairmont Olympic Hotel has the most adorable Teddy Bear Suite, where you can take Christmas photos of your kids in a room full of fluffy teddy bears. In their lobby, they have their annual Festival of Trees, plus a life-size gingerbread house you can walk through. It smells amazing!

Speaking of gingerbread, the Seattle Sheraton has their annual Gingerbread Village. It features incredible gingerbread displays based on a theme that changes every year (it’s been Star Wars and the Grinch in the past).

San Diego doesn’t disappoint during the holidays with its cool temperatures and extensive list of events.

Don’t miss December nights at Balboa Park which is free for the whole family. It features light displays, musical performances, delicious food, and more.

Another fun holiday event for families is  Lightscape  at the San Diego Botanic Garden. This illuminated trail only happens at night and spans one mile featuring over a million twinkling lights. So gather the kids and head to this magical display!

Best Christmas Events in the East

21. boston, massachusetts.

Boston, MA is one of the best places to visit during the Christmas season in the United States.  This Northeastern seaside city can be a festive winter wonderland, but it most certainly will be magical during the holiday season.

Some of the best activities to enjoy include a showing of Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker at The Opera House, one of this iconic show’s most spectacular and kid-friendly performances.

Ice skating on the Frog Pond in the Boston Common is a favorite of locals, as is seeing the grandeur of a spectacular Christmas Tree in the same location.  Faneuil Hall is the site of another massive Christmas tree. Plus, it’s the location of Blink! Holiday lights and music show (a favorite if visiting Boston with teens ).

For a festive holiday stroll and some last-minute shopping, the Boston Winter Holiday Market in Government Center is a great way to enjoy the season and get into the spirit while strolling the vendor stalls, live entertainment, and delicious foods.

One of the more special Boston holiday traditions includes a holiday tea where kids bring a toy for charity. The immensely popular Teddy Bear Tea at the Four Seasons collects bears for charity and offers little ones a joyful celebration, including special guests.

No Boston Christmas event is complete without a performance of the Holiday Pops concert, a fantastic event to get into the music of the season, led by the brilliant Keith Lockhart and performed by the world-renowned Boston Pops. 22. New York City, New York

People would always ask me if I’m going somewhere for the holidays. My answer would always be a definitive, “No!” I never understood why anyone in my great City of New York would want to go anywhere else during this time of year.

New York City is arguably one of the best Christmas vacations. Restaurants are decorated to the hilt, and the energy is unmatched.

There are quintessential destinations such as visiting Macy’s SantaLand to skating at Rockefeller Center’s most famous rink, under the most famous Christmas tree. The Christmas lights in NYC can be found on nearly every corner and are sure to put a smile on even a Grinch’s face!

23. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The City of Brotherly Love always rolls out the red carpet for the holiday season. Christmas in Philly is magical for all ages. City Hall is dressed up and ready to welcome you to the annual Christmas Village, with an ice rink and carousel for the whole family to enjoy.

Anyone who grew up in Philadelphia will remember the old Wanamaker’s department store organ show. Thankfully, when Macy’s took over the shop, they continued the Christmas traditions with the Macy’s Christmas Light Show that happens throughout the day.

Take the kids to see the window displays before scouting out your spot within the store. We personally like the view from the second floor, but we get there early. The crowds do gather. While one parent holds a spot, the other can take the kids to see Santa.

Down on the river, the Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest is where you want to be at night. Lights are up, hot cocoa is keeping frozen toes warm, and locals and visitors are skating around the pier as the DJ plays musical highlights from the decades.

Other events and holiday decor you don’t want to miss include the Franklin Square Holiday Festival and Electrical Spectacle Holiday Light Show, the official Christmas tree at City Hall.

There’s also the Comcast Holiday Spectacular, a super hi-res LED show combining the Pennsylvania Ballet’s The Nutcracker, a sleigh ride over the city, and a sing-along!

Looking for a day trip outside of Philadelphia? Head south to Longwood Gardens to see one of the most beautiful Christmas displays in the country. Each year the garden picks a new theme, and we hear this year will be “A Very Retro Christmas!”

Trees hang from the ceilings of the conservatory, and we can’t wait to pop in to take a look. Make sure you stay until after dark to see the lights throughout the garden. Bundle up the kids and grab hot chocolates in the cafe. Then stroll through millions of light displays across the grounds of this historic DuPont Estate. – (Keryn Means of Twist Travel Mag)

24. Washington, DC

Christmas in Washington, DC is one of the best places to go for Christmas with the family. There’s always something to do, from Christmas markets to the tree lighting and boat parades, especially on the weekends!

Book your hotel early if you want to come to the Nation’s Capital for the National Christmas Tree or U.S. Capitol tree (our favorite) lighting ceremony. If you want to tour the White House, grab your tickets ASAP. It books up early, and the process isn’t always simple.

Get a little exercise on the outdoor National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden ice skating rink. You can also see Mount Vernon by Candlelight. It’s a very unique view of George Washington’s home during the holidays, with 18th-century dancing, cider, cookies, and more. –(Keryn of DC Travel Mag)

25. Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg, Virginia is one of our favorite places to travel for the Christmas holidays. The Historic Triangle area of Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg holds various events in the month of December to celebrate Christmas.

In the historic district, you can attend a tree lighting ceremony, cookies with Santa, and a lighted boat parade. There’s an annual Christmas market, an ice-skating rink, and holiday decorations all around!

You’ll even find special presentations at Colonial Williamsburg, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, and the Jamestown Settlement showcasing colonial Christmas traditions.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg also has a special ticketed event from mid-November to early January called Busch Gardens Christmas Town. It is considered one of the largest light displays in the world.

In addition to the ten million lights, Busch Gardens offers most of its rides and special holiday shows, activities, and food. Busch Gardens Christmas Town is a must-see if you’re planning a visit to Williamsburg with kids during the holiday season.

You filled out the job application, got the call (they're interested, phew!), but now... it's interview day.

If the thought of selling yourself to a stranger brings you out in a cold sweat, you're not alone - but you can help yourself by not making the following common mistakes...

1. Not dressing app ropriately

Paul Webley, managing director of Blaze Media Digital Marketing Agency in Merseyside, says: "If you are coming for an interview in a marketing agency, dress smart. No need to be in a suit. It's cute if you are but just dress how you would expect to dress in the job and, if in doubt, err on the side of being slightly smarter.

"With us, there are loads of photos of the team in the office on the website and socials (which you should have looked at) so there is no excuse."

2. Handshake mishaps

Paul's second interview mistake is: "This one is a real pet hate and probably doesn't matter as much in the current world but... learn how to shake a person's hand. You have to do this within every job from time to time.

"There is nothing more off-putting than a limp shake. Having a firm, polite handshake is a basic human skill in business and beyond."

3. Complaining

This is another one from Paul: "We had someone a few months ago tell us that they didn't think they should have to come into the office for an interview. This was for an office-based role. If they don't think it's worth coming in then the job is not going to be for them."

4. Not checking your tech

Tas Ravenscroft, senior consultant at recruitment firm Cherry Pick People , says: "Overlooking details like the interview location or the platform being used (such as Teams), and not testing your tech beforehand, can disrupt the interview process. This is especially crucial as most first interviews are now conducted via video conferencing."

5. Bad mouthing previous employers

Tas says: "We see that candidates sometimes feel too comfortable on interview and decide to talk about their past experiences (if aggrieved) negatively, which is a big NO. Instead, my advice is to focus on the lessons learned and how you've grown from challenges in your career."

6. Not asking questions - or asking about benefits or sick pay policy

Tas says: "There are no right or wrong answers to this, but asking questions at the end of the interview is a big YES. It shows you're interested, engaged and would like the opportunity to either progress or land the role.

"I'd say in your first interview, ask about company culture, day to day tasks, expectations of this role, who's the best performer and why? 

"Questions I'd stay away from are benefit-related questions, or I recently had someone ask what the sick pay policy was like in the first interview… Safe to say they didn't get invited back. If you work with a recruiter, you will have salary and benefits info before, so no need to ask on interview."

7. Not showing enthusiasm

For Mike Carlucci, managing director of Reading-based Italian-food importer  Tenuta Marmorelle , this is a big one: "A lot of people at the moment are applying for everything and anything. They apply for hundreds of jobs.

"The result is that you get applicants who are not enthusiastic or passionate about the role or sector as they see it just as a job. There are few people looking for actual careers at the moment. In our industry, the food industry, you need to have passion and enthusiasm."

8. Talking too much

Andrew MacAskill, founder of Executive Career Jump , says: "Sometimes this is down to nerves, other times it is down to overthinking and often it is due to the questions being too broad, which leads to them saying lots and hoping the right answer is in there somewhere."

Ian Nicholas, global managing director at Reed , says a common slip-up people make is to carry on talking after giving their answer.

"Some interviewers may purposely leave a pause just to see how the interviewee will react under the pressure - so be confident in what you've said and know when you've finished."

9. Under-preparation

Habiba Khatoon, director of Robert Walters UK , says: "This means they haven't researched the company, are unaware of the key aspects of the role they are interviewing for and can't make connections between their CV and experience and the role.

"Most interviewers can easily catch on when a candidate has turned up unprepared and when they do, they can lose interest in that candidate quite quickly."

Italian food importer Mike agrees: "It is so important to spend five minutes to go on to the website, see what the company does, how they started and any general information you can get. This really makes someone stand out from the 100s of applicants."

10. Being late - or too early

James Rowe, managing director of the Recruitment Experts , says: "I would suggest arriving 20 minutes early to give you time to prepare, but don't walk through the door too soon! Turning up five to 10 minutes prior to your interview start time shows you're punctual but won't rush the hiring manager… they need breaks too!"

Almost half of Britons (45%) subscribe to two or more streaming services, according to comparison website Finder, but box office figures show the theatre-going experience is making a comeback. 

The pendulum is swinging back from streaming-first to theatre-first releases, and streaming platforms like Amazon and Apple are making moves on to the big screen with the likes of Saltburn and American Fiction, or Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon. 

That means movie-lovers are facing a conundrum, according to a senior media analyst: should they prioritise spending cash on trips to the cinema or on streaming if they want to see the biggest and best movies? 

"People are making decisions on 'what am I going to allocate to the movie theatre experience, what am I going to allocate to streaming?'" Paul Dergarabedian, of Comscore, told the Money blog.

Cinema's revival is real, according to Philip Clapp, chief executive of the UK Cinema Association. 

"Certainly the major US studios see the theatrical experience, the big screen experience, as where they want their major films to be and then benefitting from the promotional buzz that comes from that," Mr Clapp said. 

Disney chief executive Bob Iger said last year that theatrically released films were "great sub drivers".

"We benefit greatly from the power of our great films, they drive so much engagement and so much interest in our platforms," he said, pointing to Moana, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar.

Mr Clapp added this year was a "key stepping stone" to an offering similar to before the pandemic, but cinema wouldn't be back to full strength until next year.

In the pandemic, studios experimented with straight-to-streaming releases, which continued even after restrictions fell away.

Mr Dergarabedian said: "When the pandemic hit it was a real stress test on the industry because a lot of people thought theatrical was dying on the vine and that it would be going away at some point in the near future - and then the pandemic accelerated that demise in the minds of some."

But audiences have voted with their feet and instructed studios they want more variety: international films, stadium concert films, videogame adaptations, prestige films and horrors.

Smile, a Paramount horror movie on a $17m budget that could have been straight-to-streaming, had a "great result" at the box office, said Mr Dergarabedian, as did Five Nights at Freddy's. 

Low and mid-budget movies have been the slowest to recover but are returning to the big screen, making the theatre offering more diverse this year, Mr Clapp added.

Mr Dergarabedian said Universal's "diverse portfolio" was the one to beat: it spent the last year putting out everything from action films like Fast X, prestige movies like Oppenheimer, animations like Migration and some spookier offerings too.

Going theatrical still comes with a risk, the analyst said. A flop on the big screen leaves studios with a big hit to their bottom line, having spent large amounts on distribution and marketing. 

But films "tend to have more value" once they arrive on a streaming platform if they were released in cinemas first, including lower budget movies.

Disability vouchers?

Reports this week suggested disabled people could receive vouchers instead of monthly payments under proposed government changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The story resulted in a backlash among our commenters...

The next week in Money is likely to be dominated by interest rates - with the Bank of England's latest base rate decision coming on Thursday .

A cut from the current 16-year high of 5.25% is extremely unlikely, as inflation is yet to reach the Bank's 2% target.

Markets had forecast a first cut in June but are now pricing in August, with only two cuts now expected in 2024 rather than three.

There had been hope the base rate would dip to 3% next year - but again, these forecasts are now on ice.

As we outlined in our new weekly mortgage update yesterday, high street lenders have responded by moving their rates upwards ...

Mortgage approvals rose to 61,300 in March - the highest number since September 2022. But while on the face of it this looks positive for the housing market, industry experts are reporting that uncertainty over the direction of interest rates is prompting renewed caution.

Hina Bhudia, partner at Knight Frank Finance, said: "The sun is out and buyers are returning from their Easter break, so we'd usually expect these to be the busy weeks before the summer; however, the uncertain outlook for mortgage rates will undoubtedly weigh on activity.

"It's not just buyers that are frustrated. The lenders are eager to rebuild their businesses after a subdued 2023; however, they are constrained by stubborn inflation and the resulting impact on their cost of funding."

The influential OECD this week said now was not the time for the UK to be considering cutting rates - which is bad news for mortgage holders, but may be positive for savers.

The organisation anticipates inflation will be "elevated" at 3.3% in 2024 and 2.5% in 2025 - above the Bank's 2% target.

And it claims the UK will grow more slowly next year than any other major advanced economy.

It puts this down to stealth taxes and high interest rates squeezing the economy.

The organisation, which is based in Paris, downgraded its forecasts for GDP to 0.4% this year and 1% in 2025.

In February, the UK had been in the middle of the rankings with forecast growth of 0.7% this year and 1.2% next.

Away from the economy, RAC has put out figures today showing that both petrol and diesel have gone up by 10p per litre so far this year, adding £5.50 to the price of filling up a car.

Oil prices rose during April, sending an average litre of unleaded up 3p to 149.95p, while diesel rose by 2p to 157.76p.

The lowest prices for petrol and diesel so far this year were both recorded on 16 January – 139.7p and 147.6p respectively.

The good news is that, as tensions between Israel and Iran have defused, the oil price has crept back down, meaning some of the recent hikes may soon be reversed.

A cash ISA offering an interest rate of 4.5% has been launched today by Melton Building Society .

The interest is paid annually on 31 March and can be added to the account, transferred to your bank account or transferred to an existing Melton savings account.

Here's what you need to know...

How do you open an account?

• You must be a UK resident and be aged 16; 
• Accounts can be opened with a minimum amount of £25 and the maximum that can be held in this account is £500,000.

Can you withdraw money?

Yes, you can withdraw money as long as you give the bank 180 days' notice in branch, by post or phone

Once you have done this, all or part of the investments in the ISA, including any interest earned, will be transferred to you.

You can also access your money without giving notice, but you will be charged 180 days' interest on the amount you withdraw. 

A lack of demand for new electric cars has led some brands to begin slashing prices. 

Even some of the UK's best-selling electric cars are thousands of pounds cheaper than a year ago, according to Auto Trader figures shared with The Times . 

Among the most heavily discounted vehicles are the Honda E, down 20% versus a year ago at £29,600, and the Peugeot E-2008, which has fallen in price by 15% to £30,000. 

The Vauxhall Corsa-e and Mokka-e are both being advertised at a 20% off sale price, while the MG ZS and MG5 are discounted by 15%. 

Meanwhile, Ford's flagship electric car, the Mustang Mach-E, has fallen in price by 14%. 

Ian Plummer, Auto Trader's commercial director, said lower prices are good news for car buyers and that it was "encouraging" to see more affordable electric cars on the market. 

He said the discounts had been "driven by a softening in consumer demand, coupled with the introduction of the zero-emissions vehicle mandate, which is putting pressure on manufacturers to comply with the new regulations or face heavy fines". 

The government's zero-emission vehicle ( ZEV ) mandate requirers manufacturers to produce a certain percentage of zero-emission cars and vans each year.

It started when comedian Peter Kay, who was supposed to be the first official act for the new Manchester Co-op Live on 23 April, had his performances rescheduled.

Rick Astley's performance on 20 April was a "test event" for the venue but ticket capacity was slashed just hours before his gig was due to begin.

Astley fans who had their tickets cancelled were instead offered seats to see US rock band The Black Keys play - but their show has also been affected.

And to add to the chaos, this week Olivia Rodrigo's concerts, scheduled for 3 and 4 May, were postponed.

Then, Take That announced they were moving their shows from the venue to the AO Arena in Manchester.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie concert was also postponed just over an hour before the rapper was set to perform.

Today, Barry Manilow also said he had a "back-up plan" to move his Manchester performance from the beleaguered venue. 

The ongoing mayhem has left disgruntled concert-goers voicing their frustration, with some calling for travel and accommodation to be reimbursed and others calling the situation "embarrassing".

"There will be countless people who would've booked travel and hotels just for you to stitch them up because you couldn't meet assured deadlines," one person wrote on X.

Another person said the music venue should "at the very minimum" be "looking at refunding travel/hotel costs for people that can prove they paid for cancelled dates".

And another person asked: "How do I get a refund for parking? There's no info on your site or app."

Organisers at Co-op Live said the venue would be taking "a short pause to events" before welcoming members of the public to the arena from 14 May.

A Co-op Live statement said: "At this time, we do not expect further impact on our opening season. We are aware our actions have frustrated and angered ticketholders."

Tim Leiweke, chairman and chief executive of Oak View Group, which developed Co-op Live in partnership with the City Football Group, has said they cannot run any event until it is "absolutely safe to do so".

A Co-op Group spokesperson said: "As naming rights sponsor for Co-op Live we are disappointed with these further schedule changes.

"Co-op is a sponsor and does not own or run the venue, and we have made it clear to Oak View Group, who are responsible for the building, that the impact on ticketholders must be addressed as a priority."

An Itsu freezer product is being urgently recalled over fears it could contain plastic. 

Customers are being told not to eat Itsu's sizzling pork gyoza, which is sold at Asda and Sainsbury's.

The 240g packs with a best before date of 8 March 2025 are those affected by the recall.

A 200-year-old Edinburgh attraction is reopening this month after being closed for four years. 

The Nelson Monument is a 150ft tower overlooking the city, and was built to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.

It has been shut for essential works for years, but visitors will soon be able to climb its 143 steps again.

An official opening date has not yet been given.

HMRC's Welsh-language app is only being used by two in every 100 native speakers, according to a new report by The Telegraph .

A freedom of information request by the paper found that 13,831 Welsh speakers have used the app since its launch in June 2022.

That equates to 1.5% of the nearly 900,000 people who say they speak the language.

Jonathan Eida, researcher at the TaxPayers' Alliance pressure group, told the newspaper he thought the move was a "gimmick".

Gig ticket prices may be eye-wateringly high at the moment (just like everything else, let's face it) but a big sale next week will see tens of thousands of tickets at discounted prices.
