Bear Viewing
Is bear viewing on your bucket list? You've come to the right place! Homer is the gateway to the best bear viewing in the State of Alaska.
Homer's location is the closest to Katmai National Park & Preserve and Lake Clark National Preserve and our bear viewing operators are ready to take you to see the bears in their natural habitat.
From June through September, brown bears congregate on coastal sedge flats and streams in the vast wilderness of the parks. The bears feast on abundant grasses and clams in the Spring, then on salmon swimming home to spawn, and finally on berries and seeds as they prepare for Winter.
More than 98% of this country's brown bear population lives in Alaska with many of them in the wilds on the West side of Cook Inlet.
The growing popularity of bear viewing can be attributed to the fact that people can see these wild animals up close in relative safety and comfort. Well-equipped lodges and guides are the norm. From the time bears leave their dens in late May, until they go back into hibernation in late fall, visitors can see them in their natural surroundings. They are omnivores, and range over hundreds of square miles looking for food sources as they fatten up for winter.
Different kinds of bear viewing experiences are available from our local air tour companies depending on your comfort level and how much time you want to spend on this activity. You can fly for a day, stay in a lodge or remote camp for a longer period, or stay on board a boat and go ashore during the day. Access is by boat, float plane, or wheel plane, which may determine where you view the bears. Bear viewing can be done from elevated platforms near their feeding grounds. Other tours feature a more intimate experience with bears and humans in close proximity showing respect for one another.
When you check bear viewing off your bucket list, the experience will be one of the best memories of your lifetime!

Katmai National Park
Katmai National Park and Preserve is located across from Kodiak Island and encompasses over 4 million acres. Home to the Valley of 10,000 Smokes, this park provides an unparalleled experience for its visitors to observe the aftermath of volcanic eruptions. Katmai is also home to Hallo Bay . This oceanside area is best described as a sanctuary within a park. A few of the signature attributes of Hallo Bay are meadows filled with wildflowers, snow-capped mountains, glacier-fed creeks, and lots of bears!
Within Katmai Park lies the world-famous Brooks Falls . Fly via floatplane to Naknek Lake where you’ll meet your skilled bear guide and begin an extraordinary tour of Brooks Falls. During the height of the salmon season, it is possible to see 50 or more brown bears feeding in the river only a few feet from the observation platforms.
Lake Clark National Park
Lake Clark is as rugged as it is beautiful and 1000+ bears call it home. This park offers multiple opportunities to experience the best of Alaska. You’ll fly over ice fields, volcanoes, glaciers, and crystal clear lakes full of trout and grayling on your way to Chinitna Bay, Silver Salmon Creek, or Crescent Lake . These are just a few of the popular viewing areas beckoning to be explored within Lake Clark National Park.
Each of these locations offers incredible opportunities to observe 800-1200 lbs. bears in their natural environment. After a short safety briefing, you’ll put on a pair of waterproof hip boots, and climb aboard one of our bush planes. Many customers have commented that the flight from Homer into Bear country was worth the price of admission. Your route will take you over and around several volcanoes, glaciers, and rivers where you’ll land on long sandy beaches or one of many floatplane lakes or rivers. From there, you and your trained guide will hike into the backcountry for a photo safari where the incredible scenery and wildlife are around every corner. It will take your breath away. Watch as the bears dig for clams, graze on sedge grasses, establish dominance, and teach new cubs how to catch salmon in the river. Spend the day with us in the heart of bear country and make Alaska-size memories that will last a lifetime!

TOP RATED ALASKAN BROWN BEAR TOURS FROM HOMER ★★★★★
What a great day! Martin is an excellent guide and pilot. Beautiful flight over and back with a tour of the mountains on the return trip. Several hours on the ground, got up close (15 feet or so) to several brown bears that were digging for clams on the beach. We recommend Martin 100%!
What an amazing experience. First off, Martin is an exceptional pilot. Secondly, he definitely has some sort of connection with the bears. They are at ease around him which allows you to get closer then you'd expect. I cannot say enough good things about this trip and it was worth every penny. If you are looking to book a trip to see bears, look no further.
My husband and I recently went on the bear sighting tour. Within 5 minutes of landing we walked out to a mama and two cubs. The cub put on a great show for us and got within a couple feet of us. Martin is very knowledgeable about the bears and told is exactly what to do. I felt calm and comfortable with in his care. This is a one in a lifetime experience. The bear just ate clams while we watched. Martin took us out despite the not so great weather. Even in the rain we had a great time. We will do it again. Worth the money.
When we got to the hanger Martin gave us quite an extensive briefing about the plane we were going to fly in and the Bears we were going to see , he was extremely knowledgeable about the Bears that we saw on the mud flats today . one of the highlights was flying by a snow covered volcano and then landing on the beach . The mother bears and her cubs would walk right by us , it was an outstanding trip
Our family joined Martin on June 25th. Everything about it was awesome. He is passionate about the bears and very knowledge. The flight over is beautiful. I took more pictures on this tour that the rest of the time i was in Alaska combined. You can not go wrong with this experience.

Amazing Flight to See Bears!
We picked Emerald Air based on their website and reviews and we were so happy! Our family of four flew with Emerald over to Katmai and had the most amazing day. Our pilot Dave was experienced and made us feel comfortable right away. And he was a great whale spotter. Our guide Lance also was a wealth of knowledge and we trusted him completely while watching the bears. We kept our distance but some of them walked near us and we always felt Lance was giving us the right instructions. We saw two sets of triplet cubs, whale carcass, and tons of beautiful bears. Do yourself a favor and go on a trip with them. It was a magical day.
Once in a Lifetime Experience!
What an incredible day! We were a bit anxious when booking, but Melissa did a fabulous job answering all of our questions and putting our fears to rest. Our guide Lance was amazing and made us feel extremely safe during the entire trip. We saw over 30 bears and at NO TIME did we feel uncomfortable or threatened. We've traveled the world and this was one of the most amazing experiences we've ever had. Do not hesitate to book this trip, you won't be sorry. Thank you Emerald Air for such an incredible day!
Amazing Trip!
Our bear viewing trip with Emerald Air Service was absolutely the highlight of our family trip to Alaska! They took great care of us! We went to Hallo Bay. The flight out was very scenic. Then we landed and saw the bears! It was amazing! We never were afraid. It was just Great! Yes, this is not inexpensive, but it is an experience like nothing else we have done. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Do it if you can and Emerald Air is the best.

Why Choose Us?
- Experience : Captain Mel Erickson has been guiding in Alaska for 33 years, Extensive knowledge of navigating Cook Inlet.
- Dialed in on bear viewing by boat in Chintna Bay : We have the best, & quickest system of getting to, and from the boat to shore. We supply high end chest wader’s to wade to shore, and you won’t get your feet or butt wet riding in a raft like other outfits.
- Why depart from Anchor Point instead of Homer for your Bear Watching trip to Chintna Bay in Lake Clark National Park? Travel distance is only 38 miles and 1 hour 15 minutes by boat from Anchor Point, Homer is 62 miles each way, saving you 48 miles and over 2 hours of travel time round trip.
- Professionally guided bear viewing tours : We do professionally guided bear viewing tours every day, and have been for 8 years now, we know when, where, & how to find the bears. We have never not seen at least 1-2 bears in all our trips, most days we see 10-25 bears.
- Time : We spend more time with the bears than most operators,
- Waders & hiking poles : We supply waders and hiking poles allowing you to get out on the tide flats or crossing streams to get very close to bears digging clams or fishing for salmon, many operators don’t supply waders therefore they can’t get their people up close to bears on the tide flats or cross the stream’s.
- Safety : we know bears, & how to keep you safe while watching bears at very close range, Chintna bay and cook Inlet has extreme tide fluctuation, it takes local knowledge, & skill to navigate these waters and the everchanging extreme weather that Alaska can throw at you. Everyday is different and we have learned over the years how to deal with each situation.
- Photos : Photos on our website are our photos that we or our clients have taken on bear viewing trips with us, they are not stock or stolen pictures. Our information is real and accurately portray our Alaska bear viewing trips.
- Small groups : We keep our groups small with 6 people in most cases.
Top 5 reasons access to Chinitna Bay by boat is better than plane, we provide waders, & hiking poles so you can walk on the tide flats to watch bears dig clams up close, and not get wet!
- Safer, & more affordable than going by plane, several plane accidents have happened on beach landings the last few years.
- Better view of marine life such as whales, seals, sea lions, and sea birds
- Option to dig clams.
- low clouds & visibility don’t prevent us from going on our tour.
- We can access many other areas that planes cant go,& often see bears very close from the boat walking the coastline.

Late Summer Bear Viewing from Homer By Plane
Journey through the wild: august 1-31, 2024.
If you are in Homer between August 1 and 31, 2024, consider this unforgettable late summer adventure tour as you explore the dynamic habitats of brown bears in Katmai and Lake Clark National Parks. This expedition begins at the Beluga Lake office, where you’ll gear up with essential hip boots.
Scenic Flight: Glaciers and Volcanoes
Your plane tour to the bear-viewing sites is an experience in itself, as the plane soars over awe-inspiring glaciers and active volcanoes. Every flight offers a window to Alaska’s raw and majestic landscapes, setting the stage for the day’s adventure.
Adaptable Itinerary: Following the Bears
Late summer is a time of change for the brown bears – berries ripen, and salmon runs shift. Whether it’s a serene coastal area, a bubbling creek, or a river deep within the national parks, this tour focus is to bring you to the heart of bear activity.
Your experienced pilot/guide leads the way, and you may find yourself trekking several miles to get the best views. This small-group tour ensures a personalized and intimate wildlife experience.
Key Tour Details:
- Hiking: Be prepared for a possible hike of up to 5 miles, depending on the location.
- Weight Limit: Due to aircraft weight and balance constraints, passengers must weigh less than 225 lbs, fully clothed with gear.
- Accessibility: This tour is not wheelchair accessible.
- Health Requirements: Not recommended for individuals with heart conditions or serious medical issues.
Lake Clark Bear Viewing Tour from Homer By bush plane
Lake Clark National Park, a bear-watching paradise, is just a scenic flight across Cook Inlet from Homer. While it’s also accessible from Kenai and doable as a day trip from Anchorage , departing from Homer offers a unique perspective.
We’ve previously shared a detailed review of our bear-watching journey to Lake Clark .
To summarize, our one-day bush plane excursion to this park was nothing short of spectacular. We encountered numerous bears, and the overall experience was so remarkable that we’re already planning a return trip.
An added bonus is that this tour tends to be more budget-friendly compared to the Katmai excursion, and it doesn’t have the same weight restrictions for passengers.
Your adventure starts at the Homer Alaska Airport, where you’ll board a bush plane for a small-group tour to either Katmai National Park & Preserve or Lake Clark National Park, depending on bear activity and weather conditions.
As you fly towards the park, enjoy breathtaking views of glaciers and volcanoes. Upon landing, be ready for a hike of up to 3 miles (4.8 km) across varied terrains like uneven, soft, or muddy ground. This trek leads to stunning views of grizzlies in their natural habitat, foraging and hunting – with sightings guaranteed. You’ll spend about 3 hours immersed in this wild environment, learning about safe bear-viewing practices from your tour guide.
Please note, for the safety of both visitors and wildlife, fish products and bear spray are not permitted on this tour . Remember to bring your camera, rain gear, water, and snacks (excluding any fish products).
Bear viewing from Homer, Alaska, by boat
Consider a boat-based bear viewing tour from Homer as an excellent alternative, especially if you’re concerned about the weight restrictions on small aircraft. Starting from Anchor Point, about 20 miles north of Homer, this guided boat journey is the quickest route to Lake Clark and Chinitna Bay .
One significant advantage of this approach is the shorter boat ride, allowing more time for bear observation in Lake Clark. Captain Mel Erickson, a seasoned guide with 33 years of experience in Alaskan waters, ensures a safe and informative journey.
Moreover, a bear-viewing tour by boat from Homer costs less than by plane. During his inaugural Alaskan trip with friends, Chris chose this affordable, bear-viewing option, saving approximately $300 per person.
This unique charter service is the first to provide bear-viewing trips by boat to Chinitna Bay and Lake Clark National Park. An exclusive feature of this tour is the provision of waders and hiking poles, enabling guests to venture onto the tide flats for an up-close experience with bears, especially during clam digging.
Additional advantages of choosing Homer bear viewing by boat:
- Enhanced opportunities to observe marine life like whales, seals, sea lions, and seabirds.
- The option to participate in clam digging.
- Unaffected by low clouds and poor visibility, ensuring your tour goes ahead.
- Access to areas unreachable by plane, with potential sightings of bears along the coastline right from the boat.
- High-quality chest waders are provided for shore excursions, ensuring you stay dry.
- Additionally, this tour departs from Anchor Point instead of Homer for your Chintna Bay bear-watching adventure in Lake Clark National Park. This departure point shortens the travel distance to just 38 miles and 1 hour 15 minutes by boat, compared to 62 miles from Homer. This reduction in travel time – over 2 hours saved round trip – means more time for you to marvel at the bears on the ground.
The Best Homer Bear Viewing Tours – Final Thoughts
As we conclude our journey through the varied bear-watching tours from Homer, Alaska, it becomes evident that whether you choose the skies or the seas, you’re in for an extraordinary encounter with nature. Each option presents its unique charm and adventures – from the up-close experiences of the bush plane tours to Katmai and Lake Clark to the scenic boat trips offering majestic views across Cook Inlet.
We believe the primary challenge of small plane tours is the strict passenger weight restriction, which can be particularly tricky for adult men to meet. Should you be concerned about exceeding the limit, we recommend contacting the tour operator before booking your adventure.
For those concerned about the weight restrictions commonly associated with small aircraft tours, the bear-viewing boat trips from Homer emerge as a fantastic alternative. They bypass these limitations and provide a unique vantage point to appreciate Alaska’s wildlife and scenery, making them an ideal choice for everyone, especially for individuals with a more significant weight.
Regardless of your choice, witnessing the grandeur of brown bears in their natural environment and immersing yourself in the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska is guaranteed. These experiences promise to etch lasting memories. So, with a camera in hand and a spirit ready for adventure, prepare to be awed by the wild, unspoiled beauty of bear-watching tours from Homer.

Choose A Bear Viewing Tour
Watch coastal brown bears in their natural environment. Your pilot is your guide and will fly you to the prime viewing spot in your time frame. Bear behavior varies – as does the distance from which we view bears. Each trip is unique to the day. Along with these magnificent bears you will have an opportunity to view other wildlife, neighbors of the bears that share the same remote habitat. Wolves, fox, bald eagles, occasionally moose, a wide variety of birdlife, and sea life are all species that make a home in the area.
See our tour options below:
Bear Viewing along the Alaska coast, Katmai National Park or Lake Clark National Park!
The unforgettable scenic flight ranges from one to 1.5 hours of tach time each way. After landing, it will be you, the pilot and the bears with your feet on the ground. These bears have never been hunted or tainted by humans with fear or food or hunting thus allowing exceptional opportunity to see these amazing creatures up close. They do not see us as predators. We are just another species to them – it is all about respect. An estimated 4,000+ Alaskan brown bear inhabits these immense national parks and are home to the largest undisturbed population of bears in the world.
On the flight, you will see some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. You will fly west from Homer, across Cook Inlet, past active volcanoes in the Alaska Range and the Aleautian Range, glaciers and snowcapped mountains leading you to the world’s largest concentrations of brown bears.
With a guide at your side you will walk along the beaches and meadows where brown bear are frequently observed living naturally in their secluded, wilderness habitat. Witness bear fishing, digging for clams, grubbing for roots and grasses, socializing and raising their young.
Selected not only for flying expertise, but also through understanding bear behavior, your pilot will also be your naturalist-guide. Early morning departures are scheduled according to the tide. Normally you will depart at around 8:30 AM and return at 5:00 PM. The all day safari is kept to a small group, usually four to ten people. Prime bear viewing begins in May and runs through September. Your photo safari could include a trip to Brooks river or the coast of Shelikof Strait depending on where the bears are feeding.
What you’ll find in Katmai National Park and the Alaska coast!
May 15 to July 1: In the spring our trips find us on the coast of Katmai National Park and Shelikof Strait. This is the breeding season and large concentrations of bears can be found digging clams and feeding on the sedges and sea grasses. The breeding activity sometimes becomes intense and is truly a world class experience to see.
July: Farther inland, the salmon start their migration from Bristol Bay. Within a couple of weeks every river and stream will be choked with millions of red salmon. At this time we can take you to Brooks River in Katmai Park, one of the world’s most famous places to observe bears. The Brooks River Falls acts as an impediment to the migration of red salmon and the bears have come to this feast for thousands of years. The Park Service maintains a visitor center, viewing platforms, well-groomed trails and a concession, where lunches are sold.
August: With summer well underway, we return to the coast of Katmai and Shelikof Strait. The bears, by now, have grown accustomed to feeding together and often a large gathering of bears can be found shoulder-to-shoulder in the many salmon rich streams that braid the coast of Alaska.
September: The colors are changing and the fragrance of fall is in the air. September is Coho salmon time – the floatplanes, like the silvers, are returning to Brooks Falls. The bears are “power feeding” in the urgency of this being the last run of the season. Moose may be spotted as they are gathering their harems and the caribou are starting their migration. We think this is the best time to see coastal Alaska in all its splendor.
Weight Limitation: We reserve the right to limit the amount of carry-on baggage per person. Ten to 12 pounds (a small backpack and camera equipment) is acceptable. We will also need each passenger’s weight before departure. To ensure passenger safety and comfort, passengers weighing over 300 pounds can not be accommodated on our Katmai trips. *Scales are available at the office and loading dock. *Maximum passenger weight on the helicopter is 275 pounds.
