If you're planning what to see and do in Las Vegas , you may be considering a day trip to the Hoover Dam – the National Historic Landmark that diverts water from the Colorado River to various corners of the southwestern United States. Authorized by President Calvin Coolidge in 1928, the dam took around five years to build. At the time of its completion in 1935, dam workers used 6.6 million tons of concrete, more than 5 million barrels of cement and 45 million pounds of steel.

Tours of the facility are available on-site and include access to the power plant and the dam's tunnels. However, independent tour companies – many of which depart from Las Vegas – also make stops at the dam. Many of the Hoover Dam tours from Las Vegas include additional experiences, such as a stop at the Las Vegas welcome sign or the Seven Magic Mountains public art installation.

Considering both traveler sentiment and expert input, U.S. News selected the best Hoover Dam tours from Las Vegas.

To enjoy the Hoover Dam tours throughout the year, it helps to know a little bit about the dam itself. We will share some Hoover Dam information that will make you want to add one of the Hoover Dam tours to your Vegas travel itinerary.

The Hoover Dam Basic Details

The Hoover Dam is one of the most famous and largest dams in the United States. It stands 726 feet tall, and is the country’s third largest source of power hydraulically. Over 20,000 men constructed the dam between 1931 and 1935, when it officially opened. Of these men, 96 died when building the now National Historic Landmark.

When President Hoover authorized the dam, he did so to provide a dependable water supply for the southern California area. He also wanted to control the flow of the Colorado River and provide irrigation for surrounding farmland. The dam is now under the control of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Hoover Dam tours give you a better understanding of the importance of this historic dam and reservoir.

A Dependable Supply Of Water

When building the Hoover Dam, local authorities goal was to provide the area with a dependable water supply. This added supply of water led to the development of the nearby city of Las Vegas. Today, the Hoover Dam provides water for communities in Arizona, Nevada, and California. This includes the cities of Phoenix, San Diego, and Los Angeles. The dam supplies water to around 18 million people today.

Before the Hoover Dam was built, the Southwest could not farm the land because of a lack of water. A project, known as the Imperial Canal Project, transported water from the Colorado River to the border of Mexico, thus demonstrating the possibility of settlement.

By 1905, around 65,000 acres could be farmed because of these irrigation initiatives. At that time, the town of Calexico, Mexicali, and Imperial were established. This allowed around 12,000 people to reside and irrigate the surrounding land for farming. Today, the Hoover Dam irrigates over a million US acres and a half-million acres in Mexico. These areas cultivate and harvest grain, cotton, and fruit. Any Hoover Dam tours you take will help you realize how the dam contributes to the US and Mexican economies.

Controlling Flood Water

Damming the Colorado River by building the Hoover Dam removed flash flooding dangers at sites below the dam. In the early part of the 20th century, people experienced flooding regularly. Moreover, flooding of the Imperial Valley between the years of 1903 and 1907 triggered a large amount of crop losses. The building of the Hoover Dam controlled the flow of the river and prevented both floods and further erosion. When you plan to visit Hoover Dam, you can fully appreciate the history of this unique engineering feat.

The Largest Structure of Its Kind At The Time

At first, the Hoover Dam was known as the Boulder Dam. It is situated in Black Canyons deep ravine, sitting between the states of Nevada and Arizona. At the time of its construction, the Hoover dam was the largest electrical power generation site as well as the biggest concrete structure in the world.

Today, the dam’s size has been surpassed by the construction of dams in other countries, such as China. However, the Hoover Dam is still recognized as one of the largest U.S. dams. It stands at 726 feet tall and weighs 6.6 million tons.

Who Built The Dam?

When it was built, the Hoover Dam was financed by the federal government. Construction was collaborated by six companies. These companies included the following contractors

  • Morrison-Knudsen
  • The Pacific Bridge Company
  • The Bechtel Corporation/Henry J. Kaiser
  • The Utah Construction Company
  • MacDonald and Kahn

A Boon In The Great Depression

The construction of the dam cost around $50 million in 1931, with that amount escalating to a cost of about $690 million in this day and age. The creation of the dam produced a large number of jobs. This was extremely beneficial given the fact that the landmark was built during the Great Depression.

What The Dam Did For Farmers And Settlement

The building of the dam also improved the overall economy in terms of social growth and farming. Tourist revenue, today, also supports the area. Without the dam, Las Vegas and farming would not thrive as it does today.

The Dam’s Design – Innovative Yet Simple

If you visit the dam, or take one of the Hoover Dam tours, you will immediately notice the arch that it makes. This arch gravity design harnesses water and directs the water pressure to canyon walls. Because the dam is an arch gravity design, it requires the use of fewer materials, which makes it more cost-effective in terms of construction and labor.

The main advantage of constructing a gravity dam is because its design simple. The arch-gravity combination in a dam design also displaces water pressure more efficiently. When you take a Hoover Dam tour, you will quickly realize that the dam is extremely successful in accomplishing the tasks it was set out to do. Not only has the dam prevented flooding, it has supplied the needed irrigation for farming.

A Hydroelectric Wonder

The dam also makes it possible for the lights in Las Vegas to shine, as it provides plenty of hydroelectric power. However, with all its benefits, the building of the dam has also affected the wildlife. Because the dam provides a hydraulic power source, the temperature of the water often drops, which has led to the extinction of several species of fish. Also, the damming of the water, which once flowed into Mexico, has caused the vegetation to die along these river banks.

Nevertheless, when all is said and done, you will find when you take one of the Hoover dam tours , that the construction of the Hoover Dam was necessary. The 17 generators that sit at the base of the dam, can produce as much as 3 million horsepower. All which makes it possible for the power plant to supply electricity to Arizona, Nevada, and California.

Farming has also expanded to the extent that a significant number of people can be fed in the U.S. Overall, when you review the building of the dam on a Hoover Dam trip and see its operations, the advantages outweigh the drawbacks.

What to Expect On Hoover Dam Tours

When you take one of the Hoover Dam tours, the tour leaves at 7:00 AM from the Vegas area for a 7.5 hour trip. Grand Vegas Tours provides water, a light breakfast snack, and lunch. If you wish to leave a tip, a 10% gratuity is the typical industry standard.

Hoover Dam Tours Are For Everyone

The Hoover Dam Is Minutes From The Las Vegas Strip

A Day Trip to the Hoover Dam From Las Vegas

TripSavvy / Deanna Mazzola

The Hoover dam is approximately 45 minutes away from the Las Vegas strip at a distance of 33 miles from Las Vegas Blvd. As a day trip, this is a good diversion from the typical Las Vegas action as you will see some of the deserts of the Southwest and you'll be able to see a modern day engineering marvel.

Before you start with Dam jokes you must know that a diversion away from the Las Vegas strip to the Hoover Dam will surprise you. Yes, you will still tell a "Dam" joke if you are traveling with your kids or if you still have the ability to be silly, but you will be impressed by the engineering, the scenery and the fact that outside of Las Vegas there are so many more things to see and do that don't involve casinos and cocktails.

Located just outside Boulder City , the Hoover Dam is one of those places that you must see at least once because it is huge and it does have quite a bit of historical significance. When I say that it is big I cannot begin to explain how big it is without sounding like I am exaggerating. Let's just say that no matter where you are at on the dam you will look across and think about how much concrete it took to build it, how many people died while constructing it and how much water it holds back to create Lake Mead and you still will not have any idea of just how massive this thing is.

It is an engineering marvel and a day trip is well worth it.

Description of the Hoover Dam

My early memories of the Hoover Dam include taking the elevator down the concrete shaft that takes you to the base. The entire way my day would crack “Dam” jokes just to make sure I would not get nervous about the possibility of getting stuck midway between the top and the bottom.

The Hoover Dam tour has changed but you still ride the elevator down through the concrete and this massive piece of human engineering is still incredibly impressive. Take an afternoon and try to picture what it would have been like to be part of the construction crew. It is well worth the drive from Las Vegas.

The Hoover Dam Tour from Las Vegas with Lunch is one of the most comprehensive tours, making it one of the most highly-rated from consumers time after time.

Lasting 6.5 hours, you’ll get to see an in-depth version of Hoover Dam that most people don’t even know exists! If you’re ready for a fun, educational adventure away from Vegas, you’ll love this one!

Once you’re picked up from your Las Vegas hotel, you’ll board an air-conditioned, comfy vehicle. The drivers are very experienced, and make the entire drive entertaining with their anecdotes and stories about the area. Due to the small group size, you’ll be able to ask your guide questions regarding the Hoover Dam history and related subjects.

Once you all arrive, you’ll head straight into the Powerplant Tour. This was particularly interesting, where you’ll climb up to a whopping 524 feet into the walls of the Black Canyon.

Expand To See More See Less

This area lets you see the Nevada Powerwing, full of massive generators and pipes inside the diversion tunnels! After learning about how it operates and how it began, you’ll then take the elevator back to the Visitor Center.

The Walk on the Top portion of the tour tends to be the crowd favorite, as you’re literally walking over the dam! The vast majority of Hoover Dam tours do not offer this!

You’ll stop on the bypass bridge to check out the incredible aerial views (make sure you don’t have a fear of heights!), take some photos, and head back to the bus.

If you want to sneak away from the Las Vegas hustle-and-bustle, this next tour is a great way to do so! The  Hoover Dam Half Day Tour from Las Vegas is just a ton of fun, with the opportunity of seeing something that many people don’t get the opportunity to. However, you’ll see much more than just the dam on this excursion!

Once picked up from your Vegas Strip or downtown hotel in the morning (afternoon available), you’ll head straight to the dam. On the way, your tour guides will fill you in on some of the important highlights of the history of the dam and surrounding area.

All guides are certified professionals with a lot of experience, and the small group size means it’s more personalized. Once you arrive to the dam, you’ll go on an extended exterior tour of the dam.

You’ll learn even more about how it was built, how difficult it was to get it going during this crucial time in history (the Great Depression), and much more.

You’ll get to walk across the dam into Arizona, standing almost 1000 feet above the Colorado River! It almost feels like you’re soaring above in an aircraft, it’s so high!

On the way back to your Vegas hotel, you’ll make a stop at a local park full of Big Horn Sheep! Of course, this does depend on the time of year, but they come down from the mountains to graze on the grass in this area when it’s warmer.

At this time, you’ll even learn about the Native American history here, local flora and fauna, and more!

3. Best Private Tour: Half-Day Hoover Dam Private Tour from Las Vegas

  • Departure Time: 7 to 8 am
  • Includes:   Professional, local guide, pickup and drop-off, entry fees

Next we have the Private Half-Day Hoover Dam Tour from Las Vegas . This 4.5 – 5-hour tour is a great way to slow down, get some exercise in, and learn about a very important structure in US history.

This tour does include round-trip transportation and all entry fees, making it one of the most seamless ways to go about seeing the dam.

Once you get picked up from your hotel, you’ll head out to the Dam and settle in to the comfy, climate-controlled vehicle with the rest of your group. The guides will talk to you about the history of the dam, so you already have a good idea of what to expect when you arrive.

Once you arrive, you’ll further learn about the area and follow the guide around to the best lookout spots.

In fact, from the Mike O’Callaghan/Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge you’ll be able to see pretty much all of the Dam and Black Canyon! Not only will you be able to see Nevada, you’ll be able to see Arizona!

We loved being able to see Lake Mead, with rich blue waters and a rich history. In fact, it’s the largest reservoir in the country, and is a popular destination for fishing, boating, swimming, and more!

You’ll then head inside the dam for the interior tour and powerplant tour. It’s so fascinating to see it from the inside, along with the displays and photos on the walls! On your way back to your Vegas hotel, you’ll stop in the beautiful 1930’s town of Boulder City and the historic Boulder Dam Hotel.

4. Best Guided Tour: Hoover Dam Experience from Las Vegas

  • Includes:  Bottled water, hotel pickup and drop-off, air-conditioned vehicle, light breakfast snack

If you’re on a budget and want something that isn’t going to empty out your pockets, we have just the tour for you. The Hoover Dam Experience from Las Vegas 5-hour tour is a fantastic way to let loose and get out into the open desert. If you’re looking for a bit of calm to contrast the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas, this is a fantastic option!

The tour starts by being picked up at your Las Vegas hotel by a comfy vehicle that will take you out for a 33-mile drive in the desert. Despite being a desert, it’s quite scenic and beautiful to look at.

While you are riding along, listen to the commentary offered by the guides who are experts in this area and have quite a bit of knowledge about the history. They’ll teach you all about the dam workers who lived in Boulder City in the 1930s – some of which who unfortunately didn’t make it.

You’ll then drive past Lake Mead, which is the second largest man-made lake in all of the Western Hemisphere! The cool thing is, if you didn’t know it, you’d probably never even realize that it’s manmade! You’ll then cross over the top of the dam.

For many, this is really the most breathtaking experience, and at 900 feet up it’s no wonder why. You’ll get plenty of close-up views of the structure, penstocks, and Arizona Spillway.

While it was closed due to COVID regulations, the generator room and power plant should now be open up to guests again. The interior tour is just as fascinating as the exterior, offering more in-depth knowledge about the history and operation of the dam.

5. Best Full Day Tour: Grand Canyon West Rim With Hoover Dam Photo Stop From Las Vegas

  • Duration: 10.5 hours
  • Departure Time: 6 am
  • Includes:  Air-conditioned vehicle, breakfast, selected hotel pickup and drop-off, unlimited bottled water, lunch (if option selected)

Lasting a whopping 10.5 hours, you’re going to see not only the Hoover Dam, but the Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree forest, and more. This educational, fun, adventurous excursion is great for people of all ages and is one that you’ll surely take again.

You’ll start off at the crack of dawn with a pickup at your Las Vegas hotel, then travel straight into the desert. You’ll get to see various Joshua Trees that grow here – some of which are almost a whopping 1,000 years old if you can believe it!

Before arriving at the Grand Canyon, you’ll make a stop at the Hoover Dam bypass bridge, where you’ll be able to take some photos and enjoy the incredible vistas of the structure.

Next, you’ll head out to the Grand Canyon’s west rim, which is where the famous Skywalk is located. The glass Skywalk may be a bit intimidating at first, but it offers some of the best views possible of the canyon, including the 4,000-foot drop to the Colorado River at the bottom!

The guides will tell you all about the geologic and cultural history of the area, creating even more of an impact.

Eagle Point is also a Native American village which features various tribal homes and offers a bit of insight into their lifestyle. You’ll get to enjoy some of their cultural activities, such as their traditional dance performances!

Then, head over to Guano Point with some more breathtaking views over the river, You can hike the trail over here, which leads to an insane lookout! Take lunch over and enjoy it with a view.

6. Best Budget Tour: Hoover Dam Tour from Las Vegas

  • Duration: 4.5 hours
  • Departure Time: Morning
  • Includes:  Hotel pickup and drop-off, helicopter flight (If option selected), bottled water

The Hoover Dam Tour from Las Vegas is another one we had to mention, due to the consistently top-notch ratings it receives. Lasting 4.5 hours, it’s a great way to fill in your morning and be back before the afternoon! Learn all about the history of the dam, how it was constructed, and how it’s played such a massive role in Vegas’ success.

Hotel pickup and drop-off is offered, so you don’t have to worry about transportation. Once you arrive to Hoover Dam, you’ll receive an express tour where you can check out the exhibit gallery and visitor center.

The penstock viewing platform offers incredible views, and you will also be able to take a guided tour where they teach you all about how it was made – during one of the most difficult parts of US history!

If you’d like, you can choose to upgrade to their “deluxe tour”, which includes lunch at The Hoover Dam Lodge and a stop at Ethel M’s chocolate factory and botanical gardens.

If you are a foodie, this is just a must-do. Alternatively, you can select the deluxe tour and the Lake Mead Cruise, which gets you out on a paddlewheel boat with a picnic lunch served on board!

Whichever one you choose, however, know that you’ll have a great time. The cruise is always a load of fun, with amazing views of the water and a yummy lunch.

The crew are funny, entertaining, and always place safety first. If traffic is light on the way to your hotel, you’ll also be able to make some stops for photo ops at the legendary Las Vegas “welcome” sign!

7. Best Adventure Tour: Hoover Dam Trike Tour

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departure:  3050 Westwood Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89109
  • Includes:  Use of Automatic Trike Motorcycle, bottled water, driver/guide

Okay, now we’re almost positive you’ve never gone on a tour like this next one! The Hoover Dam Trike Tour is hands-down one of the most interesting ways to see the dam! You’ll hop on to a motorized trike and drive this one-of-a-kind vehicle and see the area’s most beautiful lookouts.

You do get an option of different vehicles if you don’t want a trike (though they’re pretty awesome). There are also slingshot vehicles and others that are similar to motorcycles, so it really just depends on what you choose.

However, the trikes are truly unique, and so easy to operate! If you don’t feel comfortable driving, however, it does fit 2 passengers which makes it great for going with a partner!

Before you head out, you’ll receive a thorough safety lecture by the guides and then the opportunity to take some practice runs before hitting the road.

As you ride around, the guides will explain the history of the area and the dam, mixing adrenaline with education. They do take you to various stops throughout so you have time to really see the area.

You’ll have time to walk across the dam’s overlook, take plenty of photos, and even view Lake Mead. The guides are very attentive, making sure everyone is safe, comfortable, and following them.

This is definitely a tour great for all ages and experience levels, as it does not require a motorcycle license. It gives you an amazing sense of freedom, and lets you get in some fresh air, too!

Las Vegas Travel Guide

Getting there –.

As Las Vegas is such a popular spot for tourists, it’s really convenient getting there (in most cases). It seems like a lot of major airlines offer direct flights to Vegas! American Airlines, Spirit, United, Delta, Southwest, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and many more.

As you can probably imagine, there are certain times throughout the year where flights are more expensive, such as New Year’s. If you can stand the heat, summer usually has the cheapest flights.

If you live in Southern California or Arizona, for example, you may prefer driving. The roads there are usually worth it alone, whether you like natural beauty or are itching to explore some of the various art displays in the middle of the desert.

Getting Around

While it’s very likely you’re going to spend the vast majority of your stay on the Strip, it’s not always as easy as just walking from one end to the other. Not to mention, if you’re going in the summer, that sun is going to be beaming on down on you, hard! Let’s talk about the most convenient ways to get around.

Monorail – Did you know that Las Vegas has a monorail? It sure does! This makes it so much easier for people to get around, from business travelers to tourists. This way, you can get around the Strip in less than 15 minutes! You have different types of fares, depending on how long you’re going to be there and how often you’ll need to move around. The mobile tickets are a breeze to use, too. We recommend the unlimited ride pass!

This system operates at trains every 4-8 minutes, including: MGM Grand, Paris Las Vegas, Flamingo/Caesar’s Palace, Harrah’s/The LINQ, Convention Center, Westgate, and SAHARA.

Taxi – Taxis are still heavily used in Vegas, and have been an iconic part of the city’s history. There are various companies operating in the city, and this is one place you never have to worry about it being “too late” to hail a cab.

Rideshare – If you’re not very keen on taxis, that’s okay. Lyft and Uber do operate here as well, though we feel like Lyft has been more reliable and a bit more affordable in our experience.

Rental Cars – If you didn’t drive to Vegas but you still want to drive, we recommend you grab a rental at the Harry Reid International Airport Rental Car Center. Here, there are a whopping 10 car rental companies in one convenient spot. Not to mention, it literally never closes, and has non-stop shuttle service to and from the airport terminals.

Limos – When in Vegas, right? If you want to go all out and get really flashy, limousines are a fun way to go about getting from point A to point B. There are plenty available at McCarran International Airport, though as they’re more limited than a rental car or taxi, it’s best to make a reservation ahead of time. There are also party limos and those that do Strip tours, too!

Bus – It’s available, but it’s not always the most desirable. The Deuce is Vegas’ public transportation that runs on 2 routes that can take you to the Strip or downtown. Deuce on the Strip makes stops at pretty much every resort located on the Strip, and DVX goes a bit through downtown/Fremont Street area.

Where to Stay –

One of the reasons why Vegas is so appealing, is because there really is something for every budget. From the budget-friendly to ultra-luxury, you’ll find it all here. This can make it difficult to choose where to stay, though, as there is just so much to choose from!

If you didn’t know already, The Strip is basically the very center or heart of Las Vegas. While it’s just 4 miles long, there’s a lot packed in, including endless different resorts. However, as you may imagine, it’s generally more expensive to stay on the Strip. Also, you probably want a hotel that’s located more in the center of the Strip so you aren’t having to make a trek every time just to see other things on the other end.

Budget-Friendly – If you’re really on a tight budget, we recommend taking a look at a hotel off the Strip. The Westgate is a great choice. However, there are also some other options like the STRAT which is located on the north end of the Strip. While certainly impressive in appearance and spacious rooms, it’s not a solid option. However, it’s a bit barren around the hotel, and you’ll have to travel a couple miles to get to the center of the Strip or Fremont Street.

The Luxor , Excalibur , and Circus Circus are a few other notorious hotels on the strip that are more affordable! Speaking of impressive in appearance, the Luxor is literally an enormous pyramid, and the Excalibur, a castle.

Middle Options – If you have a bit more budget, give The Tropicana a try. It has a kind of old-school Miami feel to it, and even houses one of the few original 1950’s casinos inside! We love the Paris Las Vegas, which is just a classic. It’s in a prime location and close to most of the main attractions. With their own versions of the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and Arc de Triomphe, it’s kind of like being in Paris! The rooms are a tiny bit dated, but are in good shape. The hotel also has the Chateau nightclub and over a dozen restaurants.

Caesar’s Palace and the Mirage are a couple of other nice selections in this price range.

Higher-End – The Bellagio is always a fine choice when you’re in Vegas. It’s one of the largest on the Strip, and is located right in the center of it. Thanks to the massive fountains in front of it, however, you are still set a bit away from the noisiness of the streets.

The Skylofts at MGM Grand are one of our favorites, and are absolutely impressive. With rooms starting at 1,400 square feet up to 3-bedroom lofts, you can imagine the magnificent vistas of the Strip when you look out your floor-to-ceiling windows!

The Waldorf Astoria (formerly the Mandarin Oriental), is a bit more of a peaceful form of luxury. You can rest assured that whatever you experience in this hotel – from the rooms, to the spas, to the restaurants – will be the ultimate in luxury.

Restaurants and Eating Out –

Oh boy, where to begin? If you’re a foodie (and even if you aren’t), you’re going to love Vegas! Literally everything you can imagine (and things you could never fathom) are here for the eating, at all hours of the day. Just like with hotels, you have options for all budgets. However, we highly recommend making reservations as far in advance as possible (if the restaurant accepts reservations).

Celeb Chef Restaurants – Did you know that Vegas houses the most celebrity chefs in the world (per mile)? That’s right, over 40 of them work on the Strip, offering tourists and locals prime, unique dishes and fun places to dine.

If you’re a sushi fiend, do not miss Nobu Matsuhisa at Caesars Palace and Virgin Hotels . Famous for fusing traditional Japanese with Peruvian ingredients, his dishes are fresh and flavorful. Another great Caesars Palace eat is Guy Savoy’s namesake restaurant.

Serving posh French Cuisine, it’s often dubbed the best restaurant in all of Las Vegas. Who doesn’t love some good Italian food? Paying homage to the Italian-American restaurants of the mid-20 th century, you can expect opulence and unmatched tableside service at Carbone .

Buffets – Did you know that the earliest version of what we currently know as the “buffet” started in Vegas? It makes sense, then, that they’re still masters at the craft. Buffets keep gamblers in the casinos, while still keeping things more affordable than it’d be to keep a full restaurant open all the time.

Garden Court Buffet is located inside Main Street Station, and is one of the best bang for your buck if you’re in Fremont Street. The Buffet at the Golden Nugget is another budget option, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch on the weekends. Not only that, they have a full bar! The Buffet at Wynn is probably the most beautiful buffet in the city, with a whopping 15 live-action cooking stations! You can expect delicious steaks, seafood, and if we may say – fine dining?

First-Time Musts – There are places that you just have to eat at if it’s your first time in Vegas. One of them, is the Golden Steer. This steakhouse originally opened in the late-50’s, with serious legends having dined here, like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, actress Natalie Wood, Nat King Cole, Muhammad Ali, and more.

Tao Asian Bistro is certainly an impressive place, both in taste and appearance. I mean, where else are you going to enjoy flavorful Pan-Asian food in the midst of an enormous Buddha floating over a Japanese Koi pond?

The Paris has a lot to offer, including the Mon Ami Gabi. Located right at the base of their Eiffel Tower, you can grab some yummy breakfast, lunch, and dinner here. It’s a prime people-watching spot, and also has some nice views of the Bellagio fountains.

Tacos are always a good idea, but not every taco is good. Tacos El Gordo offers delicious ones, and if you’re just coming out of the club or casino you have to fill up on these delicious ones!

Nightlife and Entertainment –

We simply won’t be able to cover every single excellent option Vegas has in terms of nightlife and entertainment, as it’s what it’s known for and has something new seemingly every month. However, we’re going to do our best to recommend you what we feel is worth your money, along with what’s simply the most popular.

Nightclubs – There are a ton of world-class nightclubs in Vegas. If you’re into electronic music, you’re in for a real treat. Zouk Nightclub is the newest and most high-tech in Vegas, with multiple rooms. You’ll see the biggest artists, like Tiesto, Disclosure, and so on here. XS Las Vegas in the Wynn is maybe the most “elegant” on the Strip, and has different areas that each time is a bit different. Top-notch, mainstream DJs are always here, and it’s always packed.

Omnia inside Caesars Palace is another luxury option, with world-famous DJs, bands, and other musical acts. Hakkasan in the MGM Grand is another great option, with various floors all offering a different genre. However, it’s most well-known for the mainstage area with electronic acts.

Here are some other great options: Drai’s, Drenched at Marquee, Tao, Chateau, Jewel, and Marquee.

Bars and Speakeasys – Vegas is definitely a drinking city, and with that comes a ton of supreme bars and speakeasys.

Downtown Cocktail Room is a swanky speakeasy oozing with elegance. The front door is a bit difficult to find, but it’s absolutely worth it once you’re enjoying a smooth craft cocktail in a velvet chair. The Laundry Room inside Commonwealth is an intimate, small little place marked with a laundry pin outside! With images of iconic Hollywood women such as Rita Hayworth and Marlene Dietrich hanging on the walls, make sure to check the red light outside or text the number to see if space is available.

Frankie’s Tiki Room is a must-see! It’ll transport you to another world, with its kitschy bar decorated with complete tiki vibes. Their cocktails are simply iconic, and the staff is so much fun. If you’re a craft beer buff, you have to check out The Silver Stamp: a 1970s den complete with wood paneling and vintage beer memorabilia.

Shows – We couldn’t leave out one of the biggest entertainment offerings in Las Vegas! Cirque du Soleil is a classic, with 6 different shows in Vegas. “O” by Cirque du Soleil is an aquatic show with the famous acrobats you probably equate with the Cirque du Soleil name. “Michael Jackson ONE” is a must-see for MJ fans, as well as “The Beatles Love” for Beatles fans. “Mystere”, “KA”, and “Mad Apple” are also great options.

David Copperfield is a legendary Vegas show that never fails to wow audiences. Even if you aren’t particularly into magic tricks, it’ll leave you scratching your head over how he pulls some of these illusions off. Other solid magic show options are Criss Angel’s Mindfreak and Mat Franco at The LINQ.

Blue Man Group has been impressing Vegas audiences for years. Their playful miming, use of music, and invented instruments is a blast! Jabbawockeez offers a kind of similar experience, and became famous from winning America’s Best Dance Crew over 10 years ago. If you’re into humor, try checking out Terry Fator’s funny ventriloquist talents.

Casinos – If you’re on the hunt for the biggest, most upscale casinos with the newest games, we recommend heading to The Venetian is a smart move. Not only that, but it has a race and sports book, a very popular poker room, and tons of slots.

If you’re looking for a certain game, then it’s worth searching around online first. Lots of newbie gamblers want to go with a low limit table. You’re not as likely to find these on the Strip, but El Cortez on Fremont Street is an excellent option with many low-limit games and blackjack from a single or double-deck shoe. It’s always fun to play around on the penny and nickel machines here, too. South Point is at the end of Las Vegas Boulevard is a great alternative.

On the other end of the spectrum lies Caesars Palace. High rollers love this place, and the fact that it often shows up in Hollywood movies is just another reason why. Be prepared to spend some serious cash here. The Bellagio is a nice alternative, with luxury and a massive 7,000 square-foot poker room.

Between March to May and September to November are commonly known as the best times of year for Vegas weather. It is a desert, so you can absolutely count on summers being above 100 degrees. Spring and fall are pretty nice – not too hot, not too cold. Wintertime tends to be pretty cold, so dress accordingly!

Attractions

What else is there to do in Vegas that isn’t gambling, eating, or seeing a show? Let’s take a look!

Fremont Street – Fremont Street is a blast! It’s a little kooky, but reminds us of “old-school” Las Vegas. Located right in downtown, it’s pedestrian-only and comes with a ton of live entertainment, the ultra-fun zipline that goes right over the center of the street, and a light show. Container Park is here, too, with all kinds of little boutique shops and live entertainment.

Statosphere Tower/The STRAT Observation Deck – The tallest freestanding observation deck in the US is located here, too! If you’re already staying at The STRAT, make sure to check out the observation deck! Even if you aren’t staying there, it’s a pretty interesting way to see a 360-view of Vegas.

The Neon Museum – Often a go-to spot for local photographers, The 2.25-acre Neon Museum or Neon Boneyard, keeps old neon signs from the city, making for a fascinating cultural spot to take a stroll away from the crowds.

Drive Your Dream Car – Ever wanted to drive a Lambo, Ferrari, or Aston Martin? You can at Exotics Racing! You can drive up to 130 mph on their race track – don’t forget to take some pics or photos! At the Richard Petty Driving Experience you can join a pro driver on the Las Vegas Speedway, too!

Indoor Skydiving – Are you an adrenaline junkie? Perhaps you want the thrill of skydiving without having to jump out of a sketchy old plane? Then head over to Vegas Indoor Skydiving!

Atomic Testing Museum – The US has quite the history of nuclear testing, especially in the Nevada deserts. This museum is educational, entertaining, and even includes an exact replica of the control point where the countdown for each nuclear bomb detonation occurred.

High Roller Observation Wheel – Located at The LINQ, this is the world’s tallest observation wheel! You know Vegas has to do things big! At 550 feet above ground, this is another great way to see the city, 360 degrees.

Roller Coaster – Head over to Adventure Dome for some indoor roller coasters, laser tag, the swinging ship, bumper cars, and more. If you’re bringing kids along, you’re going to score big points with them if you go here.

Helicopter Ride – Until you see the Las Vegas strip with a helicopter tour , you don’t appreciate the beauty of the bright lights on the casinos and the surrounding desert.

Grand Canyon – If you have an extra day be sure to take a tour of the Grand Canyon. It’s well worth the drive to see this spectacular natural attraction.

ATV Tours – Explore the beauty of the the surrounding desert with an ATV tour . These guided trips will be the adventure of a lifetime!

Balloon Ride – There is no better way to see the surrounding desert and the strip then floating above it with a hot air balloon ride .

Antelope & Red Rock Canyon – A tour of Antelope Canyon is not to be missed. These canyons were formed by water and wind erosion and will boggle your mind that they were all created naturally. Red Rock Canyon is one of the most photographed area in the country and when you go there you will know why. The fiery red rocks are stunningly beautiful. Be sure to take a guided tour of Red Rock Canyon is great way to see it, you can get lost in there pretty easily.

  • Walking from end-to-end of the Strip is not as easy as it may look. Especially if it’s the middle of the sweltering summer heat. The Strip is filled with people basically at all times, so take your time and try to plan.
  • If you end up getting lost on the Strip (it happens, especially when alcohol is involved!), try to spot the STRAT tower on the north end.
  • Plan for resort fees. These can vary from around $25 to $40 per night, which can add up quickly! These usually are not included in the fees when booking so make sure to read the fine print.
  • Bring comfortable shoes. Yes, we know there’s a lot of glitz and glamour, but at least bring the most comfy heels you have! You’re likely to do a lot of standing and walking, and if you get blisters it can put a bit of a damper on things.
  • Bring sunscreen – even if you don’t think you’ll need it! With the tall, reflective buildings and being in the middle of the desert, the sun can really blast down on you.

From Las Vegas to Hoover Dam: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Freddy Sherman Updated Aug 4, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Hoover Dam is an amazing man-made engineering marvel located less than an hour from the Las Vegas Strip . First opened in 1936, it was one of the largest concrete construction projects on Earth at the time and even today remains one of the world's largest dams. A very popular Las Vegas tourist attraction, it's the most visited dam in the world.

Hoover Dam is a working hydroelectric dam, generating power for Las Vegas and the entire southwestern U.S. It's a great day trip from Las Vegas with a special connection to the city, as a lot of the power used by Vegas' lights and signs is generated at the dam's massive power plant. Lake Mead is the reservoir created by the dam, and it supplies a lot of the water used by Las Vegas.

Getting to Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is easy — there are several ways to do it. If you drive, you can park for free in one of the remote parking lots and walk across the dam, which is free to do. The roadway along the top of the dam is mainly a pedestrian walkway with great views to either side. The Mike O'Callaghan — Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, located next to the dam, also has a walkway. The bridge offers amazing views of the dam, and it's free to walk across. Of course, you can also buy a ticket to do a guided tour of the dam (and its interior) and/or of the power plant. There's also a self-guided tour ticket option, which gets you into the visitor center, museum, and observation deck.

1. From Las Vegas to Hoover Dam by Car

Hoover Dam

It's an easy, 45-minute drive to get from the Las Vegas Strip to Hoover Dam . First, take the I-215 east towards the airport, then connect to the I-11 and US 95 south, which will take you right to US 93, which leads into Boulder City. Follow the signs from Boulder City; it's a short, 10-minute drive out to the dam's visitor center.

At the dam, there's a parking garage on the Nevada side and two parking lots on the Arizona side (the dam is on the border between the two states). The more remote lot, about three quarters of a mile from the dam, is free, the closer lot and the parking garage charge a fee. The more remote lot is convenient if you plan to walk across the entire dam structure.

You can also rent a car in Las Vegas for the drive to Hoover Dam. Consider renting the car from a non-airport location, as it can be a lot cheaper than picking up a rental car at the airport. Many large Vegas resorts have car rental counters on-site.

2. From Las Vegas to Hoover Dam by Tour

Huge turbines that create energy inside Hoover Dam

The easiest way to experience Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is to take a private tour. The Ultimate Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas with Lunch is a great way to see the dam. The comprehensive tour includes round-trip transportation from most major Las Vegas resorts, as well as a restaurant lunch. The highlight is a special guided walk on top of the dam, something most other tours don't offer.

The adventure starts with an early morning pickup at your hotel (they pick up at most major Strip resorts). Then you arrive at the dam (it takes about 45 minutes to get there), and you can walk across the top and get some Instagram-worthy pics. The early-morning pickup allows you to get to the dam before most tourists arrive for a better experience.

Next, you descend down inside the dam for a tour of its massive power plant . Then it's back outside for a look at the enormous spillways, where the water goes into the power plant and where it exits, over 700 feet below you at the base of the dam. You also get to visit the dam's museum and visitor center. The bus also stops near the bypass bridge before departing, so you can get more great photos of the massive structure. A knowledgeable guide accompanies you for the entire experience.

The bus then takes you to a restaurant for hot, made-to-order lunch and during the tour, snacks and bottled water are provided at no charge. On the way back, you even stop at the iconic "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign for a photo op and in the historic downtown area of Boulder City. The tour ticket includes an admission ticket to the LA Comedy Club at the Stratosphere. The entire Las Vegas to Hoover Dam tour is about eight hours, pickup is around 8am, and you'll get back to your hotel around 4pm.

3. From Las Vegas to Hoover Dam by Rideshare or Taxi

Hoover Dam and the Colorado River

Another easy way to get from Vegas to Hoover Dam is to take a Lyft or an Uber. The cost from the Las Vegas Strip area to the Hoover Dam visitor center is about $60. As a comparison, a taxi will cost at least $100. Those prices are per car each way, not per person. The drive from Las Vegas takes about 45 minutes.

Be aware, while it's easy to get an Uber or Lyft car from Las Vegas to the dam, you may find it very difficult to get a rideshare car to pick you up at Hoover Dam for the ride back. The area is quite remote, and the cars normally return to Vegas after dropping off passengers. Consider planning ahead with a taxi company for round-trip service, or try reserving the rides in advance on the rideshare app.

4. From Las Vegas to Hoover Dam by Bus

View from on top of the Hoover Dam

The Boulder City Express shuttle links most major Las Vegas Strip and Downtown resorts with Hoover Dam. The shuttle bus (which is operated by National Parks Express) also stops in Boulder City (the downtown historic district is a cool place to visit), the Lake Mead Visitor Center, and the marina. It takes you right to fun tourist attractions like ziplines, lake cruises, and kayak tours.

Alternatively, you can take the HDX (Henderson and Downtown Express) public bus from Las Vegas to Boulder City. This is the cheapest way to get from Las Vegas to Boulder City but will not take you the final 10 minutes to the dam itself. You would need to take the Boulder City Express shuttle, a taxi, or a rideshare car from Boulder City to the dam. A 24-hour pass for the HDX bus (and other public transit buses in the region) is available for a reasonable price and has reduced fares for seniors, students, military, and other special groups. It's a great way to get around for those visiting Las Vegas on a budget.

5. From Las Vegas to Hoover Dam by Helicopter

View of Hoover Dam from a helicopter

The best way to see the incredible scale of Hoover Dam is from the air, by helicopter. There are several options to get from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam by helicopter. Most Las Vegas to Grand Canyon helicopter trips will include a flyover of the dam and Lake Mead . There are also specific air tours of the dam and lake from Las Vegas, with no landing, just flying over the area.

Papillon provides helicopter tours over Hoover Dam from the Las Vegas airport. They also fly from their base at the Hoover Dam Lodge in Boulder City. The Hoover Dam Lodge, which is a resort hotel, is a great place to stay if you want to spend more time exploring the dam. The resort is near the dam, and you can ride mountain bikes along an old railroad line (now a scenic bike path) right to the dam.

Las Vegas to Hoover Dam Day Trip: Ultimate Guide (2024)

Affiliate Disclosure for Destination Checkoff

On my most recent trip to Las Vegas, I had kept a day free in my itinerary to visit Hoover Dam. I have visited Vegas more than 10 times by now, but in the past, I never got around to visiting the iconic Hoover Dam!

Before this, I had only seen Hoover Dam once by air when I took a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon. The dam looked massive from the sky, and I was very excited to see it in person.

So, my husband and I took a break from the neon buzz of Las Vegas and visited Hoover Dam. Let me say that it was an experience worth every minute!

In this guide, I’ll share how you can make the most of your day trip from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam, how to get there, and what to not miss seeing at the dam.

Whether you love history, engineering, or nature or just need a change of scenery, this Hoover Dam trip from Vegas is for you.

In a hurry, and looking for a tour recommendation to Hoover Dam from Vegas?

➡ Ultimate Hoover Dam Tour from Las Vegas With Lunch – includes transportation, Hoover Dam tour tickets, lunch at a restaurant, and photo-op at the ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign.’

How far is Hoover Dam from Las Vegas?

Hoover Dam is surprisingly closer to Las Vegas than you may think, just around 40 miles southeast of the city. This short distance makes it an ideal day trip or even a half-day trip getaway from Vegas.

  • Distance from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam – 40 miles
  • Travel time from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam – around 50 minutes by car

Hitting the road from the Vegas Strip, the drive took us roughly 50 minutes, a swift mid-morning escape from the neon lights to an engineering marvel nestled in the desert.

Scenic drive from Las Vegas to Hoover dam with view of Lake Mead

We had a rental car and followed Google Maps for directions. We took the I-215 E and I-11 S, finally taking the NV-172 and Hoover Dam Access Rd and reaching the Hoover Dam parking lot.

Visiting Hoover Dam is one of the best Las Vegas attractions besides gambling .

Ways to travel from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam

Exploring your options for traveling from Vegas to Hoover Dam? The most popular options are to drive yourself or take a tour from Las Vegas. But there are some other less popular options as well, like taking a rideshare or taxi.

Drive yourself

We had a rental car for this particular Vegas trip, so we drove to Hoover Dam. Usually, we don’t rent a car in Vegas as we hardly venture out of the Strip.

But on this particular Vegas trip, we visited with family and planned to explore National and State Parks around Vegas.

Take a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas

Most tourists to the Vegas Strip area prefer not to rent a car as the parking fees can be very high at the resorts. On our previous Vegas trips, we never rented a car!

If you are not planning to rent a car, taking a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas is the most popular way to see the dam.

These tours will pick you up from your Vegas Strip hotel, and many even include lunch at Hoover Dam. You can even book a tour that includes both Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon West as a single day trip from Vegas.

Rideshare services like Uber/Lyft

This is the least recommended option to reach Hoover Dam because it might be easy to find an Uber or taxi from Vegas to Hoover Dam, but you might have a hard time getting a return ride from Hoover Dam to Las Vegas.

Even if you pre-book a return ride, they can always cancel, leaving you stranded.

If you are not planning to rent a car and drive yourself, I recommend you take a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas, which includes transportation to and from Vegas Strip hotels.

Security Procedures and Parking at Hoover Dam

Just before we reached the Hoover Dam parking lot on Nevada’s side, there was a security checkpoint for routine inspection. Just note that all vehicles are subject to security inspection here.

Cars waiting in line at the Hoover Dam Security Checkpoint

Before the Security checkpoint, there was signage for Lake Mead Overlook, a small road to the left. We took that and saw an amazing view of the Lake Mead recreation area! More on this below.

There is a huge multi-level parking lot on the Nevada side of Hoover Dam. We paid $10 for parking when we entered. There are elevators and stairs here.

Multi-level parking structure with stairs and elevator at Nevada side of Hoover Dam

The Nevada side parking lot structure also had a cafe, gift shop, and restrooms. I always collect magnets as souvenirs, and I got a Hoover Dam magnet for my collection from the gift shop.

There are some smaller free parking lots on the Arizona side of Hoover Dam, and to get there, you would have to drive across the Hoover Dam, which is very crowded with pedestrians. Also, the Arizona side free lots are further away from the dam, so we chose to park on the Nevada side paid lot.

Hoover Dam Entrance fees and various ticket options

It was a little confusing at first for me to understand the various ticketing fees at Hoover Dam, so I have broken it down for you:

  • Parking in the Nevada side lot – $10 per car
  • Visitor Center Entrance Ticket – $10 per person, includes Exhibit Building.
  • Guided Powerplant Tour Ticket – $15 per person, 30-minute guided tour, includes Visitor Center entrance.
  • Guided Dam Tour Ticket – $30 per person, 1-hour guided tour, which includes everything the Powerplant Tour has and more. It also includes the Visitor Center Entrance.

We only paid the $10 for car parking and didn’t take the paid tours. You can still walk on the top of the dam and the Memorial Bridge without paying for the tour, just like we did.

If you have more time than we did, definitely take the Dam tour, as it provides the best value.

What to do at Hoover Dam?

Below are some of the top things to do and see at Hoover Dam. My favorites were walking on top of the Dam and walking on the Memorial Bridge. They are two separate things!

Walk on the Top of Hoover Dam

One of the most popular things to do in Hoover Dam, and my favorite, was to walk on top of the dam. It was a short walk on a flat paved surface from the Nevada side parking building to the road on top of Hoover Dam.

Top of the Hoover dam with road for cars and walkway for visitors

As we strolled across the dam, we saw the vast Lake Mead on one side and the Colorado River’s deep canyon on the other.

View of Colorado River and Memorial Bridge from top of Hoover dam

On the Lake Mead side, we saw the massive intake towers and spillways, key parts of the dam’s design, towering above the water.

On the Colorado side, we could see a panoramic view of the Mike O’Callagan Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Circular clock tower showing a blue clock with Nevada State time

It was awesome to stand on the state line marker with one foot in Nevada and one foot in Arizona! The two clock towers in each state were cool, showing Nevada and Arizona time.

Hoover Dam Visitor Center

The Visitor Center has exhibits on the history and construction of the dam and its impact on the region. It also has an observation deck for views of the dam and the Colorado River.

Hoover Dam Visitor Center building

This might be the first place I have seen where you have to pay to visit the Visitor Center! Visitor Center Admission was $10 per person, so we decided not to go inside.

There were nice views from pretty much everywhere, and there was a lot of information to read outside on the dam as well, so we didn’t want to pay to just check out the visitor center.

Tour the Hoover Dam

There are two types of tours you can take at the Hoover Dam:

Guided Power Plant Tour – This 30-minute tour is $15 per person and can be reserved online at the Hoover Dam website .

An information board showing the various types of Hoover Dam tours and their cost

Guided Dam Tour – The 1-hour Guided Dam Tour includes everything that the Power Plant Tour has, plus two extra stops in the Dam. This tour is $30 per person and is only sold at the Hoover Dam (not online). You can upgrade your Power Plant tour to the Guided Dam Tour during your visit if tickets are available.

Check Out the Exhibits Building

The Exihibts building is on the Nevada side and houses historical exhibits about the dam’s construction.

A rectangle concrete building that says exhibits on top at Hoover Dam

The Exhibit building entrance is included as part of the Visitor Center Ticket, Power Plant Tour, and Dam Tour.

Walk on the Mike O’Callagan Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

While walking on top of the dam was cool and something I highly recommend, the best views of Hoover Dam we experienced were from the Tillman Memorial Bridge.

A ramp and stairs walkway to go to the Memorial bridge at Hoover Dam

To reach this bridge, we had to drive to the smaller parking lot on the Nevada side. This Memorial Bridge parking lot is free, and there is a paved ramp that takes you up to the bridge. You can also take the stairs if you wish.

There were displays and plagues throughout the walkway, which were really nice to get information about the construction of the bridge.

Once we reached the top, we walked on the bridge and saw amazing panoramic views of Hoover Dam (that we had been walking on just before), Lake Mead, and the Colorado River.

Girl in black outfit standing against the Memorial Bridge railing with Hoover Dam and Lake Mead in the background

We were in constant awe of the massive size of the dam and all the amazing hard work that went into the construction of the Hoover Dam and the Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Stop at the Lake Mead – Lakeview Overlook

While coming from Las Vegas, just before you reach the security checkpoint, you will see a sign for Lake Mead – Lakeview Overlook and a small road to the left.

We took this little road that took us to the overlook area at the top with a small parking lot. The car turnaround was quick, and we were able to get parking.

View of Lake Mead and Boulder Basin from Lake Mead Overlook area

From the overlook area, we saw an amazing panoramic view of Lake Mead Recreation Area and Boulder Basin from here.

We saw some tour vans stop here as well, so it seems like a popular stop in a Hoover Dam tour from Las Vegas.

Is Hoover Dam kid-friendly?

I think a visit to Hoover Dam is one of the best things to do in Las Vegas with kids . Older kids will like the dam tours, educational exhibits, and ample opportunities to learn about engineering and history. Teens like mine would love taking photos with the epic scenery, and younger kids will have a lot of outdoor space to move around. There are restrooms, a cafe, and a gift store here as well, ideal for families.

Hoover Dam should definitely be part of any Vegas family vacation !

Where to stay for Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is only a 45-minute drive from Las Vegas, so it is very easy to do a day trip from Vegas like we did.

We stayed at Holiday Inn Club Vacations at Desert Club Resort , which I thought was one of the best Las Vegas hotels off the strip , but still just a block from the Strip.

I would also consider it one of the best family resorts in Las Vegas , with its spacious two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen and living room. It was great for our family of four with lots of room.

Final Takeaways: Visiting Hoover Dam from Las Vegas

I hope my Las Vegas to Hoover Dam day trip experience has walked you through everything from the scenic drive from Vegas to Hoover Dam and what to do there.

I believe if you are in Vegas, you should definitely spend a morning at Hoover Dam. It’s also a great outdoor thing to do on a Vegas girls trip with friends!

hoover dam tour from las vegas strip

Any tour inside the dam is run by the operators of the dam rather than the tour operator. If you book a group tour, it's unlikely you will be able to get more than the quicker "powerplant" tour, since the "dam tour" cannot be purchased in advance. Check if an inside tour is included in the price quoted and which tour they promise.

The 6 Best Grand Canyon Bus Tours From Las Vegas

W hile the Strip is certainly one of Las Vegas' most famous features, it's not all the city has to offer. A trip to Las Vegas wouldn't be complete without experiencing the awe-inspiring natural wonders just outside of it, such as the Grand Canyon. Tourists and locals alike will enjoy a break from the bright lights and bustling city on a bus tour to the Grand Canyon. As one of the largest natural canyons on Earth, the Grand Canyon is more than 270 miles long, meaning there are multiple destinations to explore; the most popular are the South and West Rims.

We've rounded up the top options for Grand Canyon bus tours from Las Vegas, whether you seek an adventurous ride or a more tranquil sightseeing experience.

Best Overall: Grand Canyon West Rim Bus/Helicopter & Landing Tour with Optional Skywalk

Tour operator: Canyon Tours

Price: From $358 per person

Duration: About 10 hours

Visitors can experience the ultimate Grand Canyon bus tour paired with an unforgettable helicopter ride down to the floor of the canyon. The adventure begins on an air-conditioned tour bus that departs from the Vegas Strip and carries passengers to the West Rim. From there, passengers will board a helicopter that descends 4,000 feet, landing on the floor of the canyon. Visitors can explore the canyon floor before reboarding the motorcoach and continuing onto Grand Canyon West, which is home to Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch. You'll also have the option to brave the world-famous glass Skywalk for sweeping views (and an additional fee).

Local tip: Grand Canyon West is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, which is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribal Nation. In the tribe's traditions, the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River are considered living, spiritual entities. When visiting Grand Canyon West, travelers are immersed in the rich culture and history of the Hualapai Nation.

Best West Rim Tour: Grand Canyon West Rim Bus Tour with Lunch, Hoover Dam Stop and Skywalk

Tour operator: Grand Canyon Destinations

Price: From $99 per person

Duration: About 11 hours

Located in Peach Springs, Arizona, the West Rim is only a few hours from Las Vegas. This tour will show you the best that the West Rim has to offer, including the glass-bottomed Grand Canyon Skywalk bridge (for an added fee). After being picked up from select Vegas hotels and traveling three hours on an air-conditioned bus, passengers get to spend up to four hours exploring the West Rim. A must-see lookout point at the West Rim is Guano Point, from which you can hike to Highpoint Hike and get a view of the Colorado River.

A lunch box, snacks and plenty of water are included with the tour. One unique feature of this outing is that you get to stop at the Hoover Dam for a photo during the bus journey (but keep in mind this stop is available seasonally). You can also choose from several upgrades, including a Skywalk admission ticket, a helicopter ride or a boat excursion.

Local tip: Because it's closer to the Las Vegas desert, this side of the Grand Canyon is the warmest year-round, with hot and dry summers, mild shoulder seasons, and occasional snowfall in the winter.

Best Budget: Grand Canyon South Rim Bus Tour from Las Vegas

Price: From $84 per person

Duration: About 15 to 16 hours

A South Rim bus tour offers a quieter, more historic sightseeing experience. The South Rim is one of the most popular parts of Grand Canyon National Park . Guests can see the wide variety of flora and fauna native to the area. This bus tour – which takes around four hours to get to the South Rim's Mather Point from Vegas – gives visitors the opportunity to walk along Bright Angel Trail; it leads to Bright Angel Lodge, located in the Village Historic District.

You can also stock up on snacks and souvenirs at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, since the tour only includes a box lunch and water. Or, upgrade your excursion with the guided walking tour add-on. Another historic part of the tour is the scenic drive along the famous Route 66, one of the first U.S. highways.

Local tip: Located farther from Vegas, the South Rim is cooler, with rainy and snowy winters, and more moderate temperatures in spring, summer and fall.

Plus, you can select your own pickup location from several Las Vegas-area hotels and be dropped off at one of three locations (Excalibur, Horseshoe or Treasure Island).

Local tip: Visitors who are looking to experience the wildlife native to the area often choose the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is home to more animal species than the West Rim, such as coyotes and bighorn sheep.

Best All-Inclusive: Grand Canyon West Rim Bus Tour & Hoover Dam Photo Stop with Optional Skywalk

Tour operator: Comedy on Deck Tours

Duration: About 10.5 hours

This full-day Grand Canyon tour run by Comedy on Deck Tours gives guests several options to customize their experience, such as a VIP Skywalk tour. But there is also a great base package. Guests are treated to not one but two sit-down meals from local restaurants: a freshly prepared breakfast and a barbecue lunch with an incredible view of the canyon. Additionally, this all-inclusive tour also stops at the Hoover Dam on the way to the Grand Canyon, so guests get to experience two national landmarks for the price of one. The professional comedian who doubles as tour guide makes for an even more fun experience.

Local tip: The West Rim is typically less crowded than the South Rim, so it may be a good option for your Grand Canyon destination if you're hoping to avoid all the tourist congestion.
