The Northern lights season in Iceland is from September to April. This is when the nights are dark so your chances of seeing the Northern Lights are greater. Will we be with the same guide the whole time?
We always try to have you with the same guide for the days you will be touring in Iceland, but sometimes might need to switch between two or more guides depending on the duration of your trip and our availability.
Tipping/Gratuity for guides/drivers
If you really want to show your guide that you appreciate his work and the effort he put in your trip and experience in Iceland you can use this as a rule of thumb. Generally, the guides receive a tip at the end of the trip that ranges from 100 - 200 USD per day, this amount is totally up to you and please note that tipping in Iceland is not required.
However this is a great way to show that you were happy with the services and you appreciate their work!
How much does it cost for overtime with driver/guide?
You will have your own private guide and vehicle for 8 - 10 hours each day unless otherwise confirmed. If you request more than 10 hours and want to have the driver/guide at your disposal longer, the additional cost is 21.000 ISK per hour . For the days you don't have a private driver/guide included in your itinerary you can add the extra service with a minimum cost of 4 hours.

World Class planning and execution. Absolutely amazing service in a wonderful country.
February 14, 2024
Deluxe Iceland is 1st class, and they made this the most perfect vacation ever. Every detail was attended to. From the minute the arrangements we made with Anna, who worked to make sure we hit every spot to the driving with Unnar, we made sure everything executed flawlessly. I would give them 10 stars if the system allowed. We have traveled the world but never had a better trip than this one. We will definitely be back! I recommend anyone to book with this world-class... Unexpectedly had a solo trip to Iceland (my daughter got sick and couldn't go) and Deluxe Iceland made my trip absolutely amazing. Unnar was an amazing guide, he went above and beyond to make sure my trip was nothing short of spectacular. I didn't have to worry about a thing, they took care of everything and customized my trip perfectly. I'm going back in Oct with my daughter, and I can't wait to see what they plan for us. I highly recommend Deluxe Iceland; you will not be... Read more
Iceland Adventure
Deluxe Iceland took the guess work out of planning an adventurous vacation for my family with 3 children, aged 11, 11, 9. They carefully crafted an itinerary that was exciting, educational and took into consideration that we were traveling with children. The hotel suites were phenomenal with friendly staff that were willing to answer questions and make every accommodation to our requests. The activities, which included ATVs, waterfalls, snowmobiling, geothermal spa, farm visits, lava center, park hikes, geysirs, etc. were carefully mapped out to maximize our 6 day trip. Deluxe Iceland staff were available in the days leading up to our arrival and promptly answered any/all questions while we were in Iceland. I would highly recommend using them to plan your... Icelandic Dream Vacation
November 24, 2023
Our family of three just returned after an amazing 4 day trip to Iceland. The trip was wildly successful - despite an impending volcanic eruption and hurricane-force winds - due to the incredible staff at Deluxe Iceland (Arney with planning and Unnar as our driver/guide). The team at Deluxe Iceland was able to preemptively identify potential issues due to weather and adapt our itinerary accordingly - something we could never manage on our own without that same level of knowledge. We also avoided large tourist groups and were able to optimize sightseeing according to weather - ultimately seeing and learning so much more than we could have accomplished on our own. We highly recommend planning your Icelandic vacation with Deluxe... Read more

Iceland Luxury Tours & Honeymoons
Why should you travel to iceland with us.
Everybody’s Iceland travel photos look the same. Except for the ones our clients take.
That’s because our trips to Iceland are made entirely bespoke and never alight on the exact same itinerary twice. We can do this because we’ve spent years – since the early days of 2005 – getting to know and befriending the locals. From Einar, your guide across mighty Langjökull glacier and the tunnels beneath it, to Rós, who’ll lead you into the maw of dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano. These people – friends of Black Tomato – offer the best possible vantage to immerse yourself in this magnetic, eye-opening country.
Example Iceland trips
South iceland, golden circle & reykjavik: from land…, the ultimate summer holiday in iceland, reykjavík & south iceland: a luxury iceland family…, reykjavik: an icelandic long weekend, diamond circle: get off the beaten track in…, iceland: a luxury trip chasing the northern lights, reykjavik: a luxury helicopter tour through iceland, iceland: snorkel and dive between tectonic plates, thríhnúkagigur & eyjafjallajokull: a volcano adventure in iceland, north iceland: swim with humpback whales beneath the…, game of thrones: ireland and iceland, game of thrones: croatia and iceland, what to see and do in iceland.
If you can’t see it here we’ll still plan it for you.
Iceland is a remarkable destination famed for one-of-a-kind landscapes of stunning natural beauty. From exploding geysers to thundering waterfalls and steaming hot pools, treat yourself to a private tour of an island that is as phenomenal as it is fiery. Enjoy all this and more – including the stunning beauty of the Northern Lights – with a luxury vacation to Iceland.
WELCOME TO MYTH COUNTRY
If the majestic humpback whales found in southern Faxaflói, best spotted from a private boat, don’t put the pressures of home into perspective, then the force of nature that is Gullfoss (Golden Falls) Waterfall should do the trick. On average, an astonishing 109 cubic meters a second tumble the 30-plus meters to the river below. Walk through Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Parks ancient rocks where the world’s oldest surviving parliament was born or soak up the fascinating modern history (and beer) at Ölverk micro-brewery. Go off-piste via private helicopter and see this classic route from a more unfamiliar angle.
ICONIC SIGHTS IN ICELAND
Book a luxury summer vacation to take advantage of long, sunny days and seize the opportunity to see the island’s wildlife in full force. There are fantastic spots for coastal horse-riding, seal-spotting and whale-watching. A summer trip means seeing Iceland at its greenest, but don’t worry about missing out on the snow. At Deplar Farm you can take to the mountains for a spot of heliskiing that will lead you from the summit all the way down to the sea.
GET BACK TO NATURE
Seeking somewhere for that perfect year-end retreat? Private tours of Iceland give you the chance to enjoy snow-capped surprises at every turn. Hike over a glacier, explore ice caves, marvel at the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon or hop on a snowmobile to carve your own path through the unforgettable landscape. An elegant country lodge, Hotel Ranga lets you take to the sky with a private helicopter tour before experiencing the Northern Lights from the comfort of your own hot tub.
EXPERIENCE A WINTER WONDERLAND
Iceland is not a destination to see from a tour bus or over the shoulders of the crowds; but one to truly immerse yourself in. Whether that be on the back of a snowmobile as you chase the Northern Lights or from a private boat on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, the best way to see Iceland is undoubtedly on a private luxury tour. Taking you into untapped corners of this rugged and wild country for an adventure-fuelled vacation, all without another person in sight, you’ll get to know Iceland unlike anyone else.
LUXURY AND LAGOONS
Where adventure leads, romance isn’t necessarily unable to follow. Part of the allure of a luxury honeymoon in Iceland lies in its sweeping landscapes, but the reality is those discoveries that can be made within them. Private candlelit dinners in glacial caves, helicopter tours to remote islands and an exclusive corner of the Blue Lagoon to dip into; a honeymoon in Iceland offers something truly unique. Dust it all off with luxury lodges and Iceland proves to be quite the romantic indeed.
ROMANCE AMONG THE STONES
The laidback vibe of a charming fishing town blends effortlessly with contemporary edge in the capital city they call the Bay of Smoke. Small yet perfectly formed, Reykjavík can outshine cities three times its size when it comes to art, culture, and cutting-edge music. Should you tire of feasting on street food staples such as pylsur or viewing abstract sculptures from the likes of Sveinsson, we’ll arrange for the option of transport to the glorious mountains and rugged countryside just beyond the city limits. The wild is right on your doorstep here.
Forget glamping. With Blink, we can whisk you away to an area of Þórsmörk (Thórsmörk) most never see and experience the romance of the mighty glaciers from your own made-to-order campsite. Blink can make the unimaginable happen and create unique one-off experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime.
Blink luxury camping
Aurora viewing is an essential part of an Icelandic vacation. Best seen during the winter months, our expert guides know the very best spots to catch a glimpse of the kaleidoscopic Aurora Borealis. Live in the lap of luxury at the enchanting Hotel Ranga and you may even be lucky enough to spot the iconic lights on your doorstep.
The Northern Lights
Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park and the raw, uncut wilderness that surrounds it is unlike anywhere else on earth. Snorkel in waters so clear they could be bottled, descend into the chambers of dormant volcanoes, and marvel at the tectonic plates that were immortalized in bloody battle during Game of Thrones season four.
Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park
With its inky-black sand and mist-covered sea, the otherworldly Reynisfjara Beach could easily be lifted from the pages of a science fiction novel. Unravel its mysteries on a tour of the south coast that also includes Dyrhólaey rock and its local puffins and an action-packed hike across Sólheimajökull glacier where you’ll need to navigate crevasses and a vertical ice wall climb.

The Golden Circle
Explore some of Iceland’s most dramatic scenery.
Encompassing the south and southwest of Iceland, the Golden Circle contains some of the country’s most dramatic and iconic geography; from Þingvellir National Park and the Gullfoss waterfall to the geothermal geysers of Haukadalur and the enormous spread of Langjokull Glacier.
The Diamond Circle
An expedition into Iceland’s unknown north.
Even more otherworldly than its southern neighbor, the Diamond Circle – in the less-visited North of Iceland – contains such spectacles as Goðafoss (the waterfall of the gods), sprawling Myvatn Lake, and the echoing, black-red rocks of Hljóðaklettar.
The Westman Islands
The last eruption on this moody archipelago happened in 1973.
The remote, volcanic archipelago of Vestmannaeyjar contains an evocative museum documenting the eruption which destroyed much of the original settlement. Explore red mountains and watch for whales. Or tread the black beaches of Isole Vetsman before enjoying some of the country’s most innovative cuisine.

Experience Iceland in luxury with Jacada Travel. We’ll create a tailor-made Iceland tour just for you. With some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet, Iceland sits on the rim of the Arctic Circle.
Known as the Land of Fire and Ice, it’s these two elements that have shaped the island, giving it its unique topography and astonishing natural landmarks. This is a country where ice fields stretch out towards the horizon; mighty glaciers carve their way through mountains, thundering waterfalls crash to the ground and geysers spew hot water and steam into the crisp, Arctic air.
It’s safe to say, when it comes to natural splendour, Iceland is hard to beat. This is a country made for exploring, where one will be spending most of their time in the great outdoors. From racing across lava fields in a Super Jeep and kayaking through the glistening waters of a glacial lagoon, to hiking up mountains and quad biking across black sand beaches, Iceland is one big adventure playground. And, of course, after a day of activity, there’s nothing better than sinking into the thermal waters of its naturally occurring hot springs.
Iceland is a country for all seasons. In the winter, you have frozen waterfalls and, if you’re lucky, the Northern Lights. During the summer you can experience three days of constant sun and the thawed interior tundra. Situated between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, it’s the perfect stop-over between the US and Europe.
Your luxury Iceland tour can include as little or as much as you like. We’ll help you explore this beautiful, dramatic and varied country, alongside our excellent local guides. From accommodation to activities to transport, we’ll take care of everything so you can fully enjoy your exploration of Iceland.
Discover the country’s black volcanic rock, red-hot lava fields and steaming geysers
Explore the glacial lakes, icebergs and the aquamarine of the Blue Lagoon
Go fishing and spot puffins in the Eastern Fjords
Spend an evening chasing the elusive Northern Lights
Visit the small fishing towns and villages that dot the island’s wild ring road
Dine out in the vibrant cafes and bars of Reykjavik , Iceland’s hip capital
Senior Travel Designer
The volcanic activity of Iceland is humbling. The natural energy that both sustains and threatens the islanders’ way of life makes its inhabitants and visitors connected, acutely aware of the power of our earth in a way that most are not. The lunar landscape of lava fields and towering glaciers make this an unforgettable island to explore.

Where to go
A city with views of wild seas, glaciers, the sparkling waters of Tjornin Lake and cobbled streets lined with colourful houses. Just moments from thermal lagoons and brimming with hip bars, stylish restaurants and fascinating museums.
This world-famous route takes in Iceland’s most epic natural wonders. Discover Thingvellir national park, Gullfoss waterfall and the valley of Haukadalur with the Geysir and Strokkur and geysers.
A beautiful branch of western Iceland, the ruggedly beautiful Snaefellsnes Peninsula is a magical landscape of windswept beaches, towering volcanoes and picturesque fishing villages.
Captivating, with a character all of its own and home to Iceland's second city, the energetic town of Akureyri. Visit charming hamlets of traditional turf houses and wonder at bizarre rock formations and crashing waterfalls.
A region of wonderful variation and brimming with exciting excursions and natural highlights. Great for outdoor pursuits, fascinating viking history and a delicious dining experience for foodies.
Black lava fields and cinematic panoramas dominate Iceland's stark and volcanic interior. A no-mans-land of raw beauty without towns or villages. An exciting place to explore in 4x4 jeeps or snowmobiles, on the unmade roads and tracks.
Eastern Fjords
Eastern Iceland is a land of contrasts, charming picturesque villages with natural harbours that pepper the coastline against the Ice Age glaciers, jagged peaks, dark forests and remote fjords, completely untouched and rarely visited
Remote, breathtaking and well and truly off the beaten track. Stretching out towards Greenland into icy waters, this corner of northwest Iceland is a land dominated by deep fjords and mountains that plunge into the sea.

When to visit
Iceland is a fantastic place to visit year-round. The winter months’ long nights are the best time to witness the Northern Lights, whereas long summer days are great for hiking. Snowmelt in the spring makes Iceland’s waterfalls even more spectacular, while autumn is quieter and the first snow’s contrast with the reddening mosses is particularly photogenic.

My family of 4 adults (2 adult sons) went to Iceland over the Xmas holidays from 12/21/23-12/27/23. The trip was outstanding! One of the best trips we have had as a family. There is so much to see and do in Iceland especially if you are looking for “action/adventure” type of activities, and especially in the winter. The country is…
My husband and I traveled to Iceland with Jacada. Every detail from beginning to end was well thought out. The trip was both luxurious and adventurous. Every moment felt like a once in a lifetime event. Communication with Jacada was spectacular. We will be traveling with them again!
Amazing trip to Iceland. All of the details exceptionally well managed and the overall itinerary was outstanding. Thanks to all the folks at Jacada for the planning, and great experiences at the Blue Lagoon, and especially at Deplar Farm- truly extraordinary!!!!
Even in the midst of Covid and all the complications resulting from it, everyone we dealt with at Jacada was able to put together an amazing adventure for us. We are seasoned world travelers, having been everywhere from the Great Wall of China to a safari in Botswana, and can say that the trip Jacada created for us in Iceland…
Our trip was well organized, our guide and driver Tohr was excellent! We did not like the Floss hotel too noisy and busy.

Iceland - Private Travel
Active and fuming volcanoes, soothing hot springs, black sand beaches – Iceland is a dreamland of natural wonders.
Peak viewing of the Northern Lights is from September through March, while the midnight sun is best enjoyed from May to August.
Iceland is the land of fire and ice, and its austere, otherworldly beauty never disappoints. It’s an easy flight from North America but lightyears away from anything you’ve ever experienced. The small and charming capital city of Reykjavik will surprise you with its unique brand of Scandinavian culture. Wander Laugavegur Street for some superb shopping – fashion, housewares, modern design – dropping into the excellent art galleries. The city hosts more than 40 festivals each year and is well-known for its cutting-edge music scene and Nordic food, the cozy cafés becoming busy restaurants and warm, friendly bars by night. Southern Iceland is a wild wonder, jaw-droppingly beautiful. Embark on a private tour south of Reykjavik, taking in the volcanic foothills and oceanside plains. Active volcanoes and jagged inland mountains give way to gargantuan glaciers, powerful rivers, and black sand beaches. Custom tours to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula reveal 60 miles of diverse landscape, featuring vaulting sea cliffs above dazzling fjords, and majestic volcanoes towering over beautiful golden beaches. And on the western side, the Snæfellsjokull Glacier sits on top of an active volcano.

What people love about luxury tours in iceland.
This trip was wonderful. Iceland is a magnificent country and everything we saw was magical. Volcanoes, mountains, glaciers, lagoons, fjords, lava fields, the ocean and waterfalls. The city is adorable. The food was delicious and the hotels were great. Our guide, Snorri, was the perfect blend of fun loving and silly along with trustworthy. He was a safe and efficient driver, knew detailed information about all of the natural wonders and peoples of Iceland, was always on time and right there waiting for us any time we finished something, took us to many out of the way sites, and kept a smile on his face all the time. He was a great and professional Tour Guide. He wouldn't let me out of the car to chase sheep to pet them, but, alas, I guess he was right...... My son and I had a trip we will always cherish!

ARE YOUR READY FOR ICELAND
Here are useful information about iceland..
Iceland is not considered a warm place by any normal standards, but thanks to the Gulf Stream temperatures are usually moderate all year round. Average temperatures in July are usually about 12 °C in Reykjavik and it is usually a bit warmer in the North and East of Iceland. It doesn’t snow as much in Iceland as many people think, especially in Reykjavik where there is usually very little snow to be seen, even during winter. However in the north and east of Iceland and the West Fjords, there is more snow during winter. A big factor in Icelandic weather is that it is unpredictable; you never know what is going to happen next. A beautiful day can suddenly turn windy and rainy (and vice versa), and you can expect to see every weather imaginable in a couple of days in Iceland, especially in late autumn and early spring.
Visa policy
- Western Europeans and citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore do not require visas. Tourist stays are permitted for up to three months, and can be easily extended at local police stations. If you do not live in Western Europe or one of the countries mentioned above, then contact the Icelandic embassy or consulate in your country to make sure you have a valid visa before entering Iceland If there is not an Icelandic embassy or consulate in your country, you approach the Danish embassy or consulate.

The first people believed to have settled in Iceland were Irish monks who came in the eight century AD. They left, however, upon the arrival of pagan Norsemen, who came in 874 to seek freedom from Norway’s oppressive king Harald Fairhair. In 1262, Iceland became subject to Norwegian control and in 1380 came under Danish control, along with Norway. After the granting of a constitution (1874) and with an improving economy, Iceland, in 1918, finally became an independent sovereign state under a common king with Denmark. The Republic of Iceland was formally declared on June 17, 1944.The Icelanders Are quite Scandinavian, exceptionally friendly, highly educated, sophisticated, attractive, honest and very modern. David Cameron under fire for hiring £42m luxury jet for central Asia tour
Foreign secretary’s use of Embraer Lineage 1000 follows £348,000 bill for James Cleverly’s eight-day trip in similar plane in 2023
David Cameron has been criticised for hiring a luxury jet worth an estimated £42m for a recent tour of central Asia.
The foreign secretary travelled on the Embraer Lineage 1000 for a five-day visit to Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia last week, the Mirror reported.
Union Aviation, the charter firm that operates the jet, said on its website that a sommelier helps pick the onboard wine selection and that it provides a food menu suitable for “the most demanding passengers”.
The plane’s other features include its own dining table, in addition to a separate relaxation zone with extra-long sofas.
The shadow attorney general, Emily Thornberry, posted on X: “I get that David Cameron may need to charter a plane when travelling to multiple countries in one week, but that does not justify spending hundreds of thousands of pounds at taxpayers’ expense to hire one of the most luxurious private jets on the market.”

Prior to Cameron’s tour, the government said the foreign secretary would use the visit to promote opportunities for British businesses and announce £50m of new funding to support the sovereignty and independence of states across the region.
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “The foreign secretary’s job requires him to travel abroad to pursue the UK’s interests. This was the most time effective way to do this in this instance. Value for money is taken into account in all travel decisions and costs are routinely published for transparency.”
Last year, Cameron’s predecessor James Cleverly was criticised for a bill of about €400,000 (£348,000) when he used the same type of plane for an eight-day tour of the Caribbean and Latin America.
Rishi Sunak has also been criticised for his fondness for short-distance air travel for journeys within the UK.
In February 2023 the prime minister travelled to London from Dorset by helicopter and flew back to south-west England by jet the next morning, Downing Street said.
The previous month, Sunak took domestic flights in RAF jets three times in 10 days . He took a 40-minute flight on a 14-seat aircraft to an event in Blackpool, Lancashire, where he took questions from the public. It came after flights to Scotland and Leeds.

Netjets signs deal with bombardier for up to 232 private jets.

After inking a revised labor agreement with its pilots last month, NetJets has signed a deal that could see it spend over $6 billion with options for up to 232 of Bombardier's Challenger 3500s .
The unit of Berkshire Hathaway already operates 88 of its predecessor, the Challenger 350.
The popular super-midsize private jet features a cabin six feet high with a flat floor.
NetJets has signed options for up to 232 super-midsize Bombardier Challenger 3500 private jets.
It is typically offered in an eight-seat configuration and has a nonstop range for coast-to-coast flights.
A number of programmatic competitors, including Flexjet, VistaJet, Airshare, and Nicholas Air, feature the aircraft.
FlyExclusive recently said it would replace its large cabin Gulfstream fleet with preowned Challenger 350s.
Bombardier also confirmed that NetJets was the unnamed customer who placed a firm order for a dozen of the Challengers back in December. That deal carries a retail value of $326 million.
Bombardier President and CEO Eric Martel said, "The Challenger 3500 jet continues to impress with its ultimate combination of refined cabin experience, proven reliability, and top performance, perfectly aligning with the needs of NetJets' discerning client base."

"As we evaluate demand and overall growth within the market, we are confident the extension of our super-midsize fleet will continue to differentiate NetJets as the worldwide leader in private aviation," according to a spokesperson for the fractional operator.
The deal with Bombardier follows similar agreements last year with Textron Aviation and Brazil's Embraer.
NetJets' agreement with Textron could see it add 1,500 aircraft valued at around $30 billion over the next 15 years.
The Embraer agreement will see it add as many 250 Praetor 500 midsize jets, valued at around $5 billion.
In 2022, it was the launch customer for Bombardier’s Global 800.
NetJets, Inc., including its aircraft management unit Executive Jet Management, is the largest U.S. private jet charter/fractional flight provider.
According to Argus TraqPak, it racked up 609,515 flight hours in 2023, a 1.8% gain.
Second-place Flexjet, Inc. flew 204,836 hours last year in North America, while third-ranked Vista Global operators flew 136,511 hours.
Charter and fractional flight hours were down 4.6% last year , although they were still 28.7% higher than 2019's pre-Covid numbers.
NetJets' growth has been constrained since the pandemic surge, mainly by aircraft in its fleet.
In 2021, it was the first major provider to shut down jet card sales as consumers swarmed to private aviation. It stopped renewing existing jet card clients when their hours ran down, and its wait list for fractional customers stretched to more than a year for some of its most popular models, including the Phenom 300, its entry-level jet.
Demand was so strong NetJets even stopped offering interim leases covering the flying between when a customer signs to buy their slice of an airplane and when the aircraft is delivered.
As industry demand ebbed, NetJets introduced leases starting at 25 hours (instead of the typical 50 hours per year) and brought back its jet cards (which also start at 25 hours), albeit with significantly more restrictions.
According to research by Private Jet Card Comparisons, NetJets has the largest pipeline of prospects who didn't buy from it during their last purchasing cycle but are considering it for the future.

Glamping With the Stars
Would cloudy weather ruin a visit to the first-ever resort to receive certification from DarkSky International? A stargazer in Utah holds on to her optimism.

As I exited Harry Reid International Airport on a bright March afternoon, my hand flew up to protect my eyes, which had grown accustomed to the dull light of a long, gray Tennessee winter. I’d headed west for the sun, but even more so for the night sky, so I was hoping for clear weather ahead. I climbed aboard a shuttle bus that would take me two hours east to Utah, where I planned to spend a starry night at Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase .
The glamping resort, one of 12 Under Canvas sites, is anchored on a canyon rim plateau in southern Utah and is the first resort in the world to be certified by the nonprofit authority on light pollution, DarkSky International . My aim was to beat the heat and the crowds — but what I really wanted was to be an early adopter of certified starry resorts.
The DarkSky Approved Lodging program is another step forward in the nonprofit’s history of advocacy for the reduction of light pollution. Broadly, the requirements for certification include being situated in an “exceptionally” dark location; having approved means of reducing the impact of light at night; and providing educational materials about night sky conservation to guests.
Under Canvas, said James Brigagliano, the program’s manager for DarkSky, was a good fit for the project because the company’s sites are in dark locations, and they already follow eco-friendly practices. Since the Lake Powell site was certified in August, other Under Canvas locations in the National Park Service’s Grand Circle Western parks area have also been approved.
Hoping for good weather
In St. George, Utah, I rented a car and headed southeast, the Pine Valley Mountains hovering to the north. The second half of the two-hour drive was on Route 89, which runs from Mexico to Canada. My roughly 60-mile section was marked by sienna-hued mesas and buttes, and cornflower-blue skies.
By 3:30 p.m., I was bouncing along a red dirt road until Under Canvas’s cream-colored tents came into view. There are 50 in all, scattered across 220 acres, all of them with views of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument , a massive geological formation that occupies about 1.87 million acres of public lands, from desert to coniferous forest.
As I got out of my car, I looked up at the sky warily. Clouds were gathering.
In the dirt lot, there were vehicles from Western states and a few from the Northeast. Like me, these travelers had come early — one day after the resort opened for the season — to take advantage of the cool weather and outdoor activities like horseback riding, hiking, rappelling in nearby Elephant Canyon and private tours of the Grand Staircase. There is also boating and fishing on Lake Powell, though the water level there has been much impacted by drought .
Many, like myself, came mainly for the night sky in Utah, which has large swaths of land with minimal artificial light and a dry climate that translates into less water vapor, which can blur the stars.
But would the weather cooperate?
Reaching for the stars
Under Canvas is certainly not the first hospitality company to tout its access to the night sky. Over the last 20 years or so, hotels in bucolic settings, along with permanent glamping sites, have been working stargazing into their guest offerings. There’s the observatory at Primland Resort in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, and the astronomy dinner at Soneva Jani in the Maldives. Elqui Domos in northern Chile has geodesic domes and cabins that open to the sky.
With stargazing in mind, Under Canvas began working with DarkSky in 2021 to arrive at a lighting design plan.
“Getting the certification from DarkSky was altruistic in terms of intention,” said May Lilley, the chief marketing officer at Under Canvas. “It’s a part of our mission to make sure our guests leave with a little bit of a different philosophy, whether that means they just turn the lights off when they leave a room.”
DarkSky’s hope, said Mr. Brigagliano, is that the new certification program will become the de facto standard for all lodging in locations dark enough to pass the organization’s protocol.
Attention to the night sky could not happen sooner. A study published in Science magazine in 2023 revealed that the sky glow from cities and towns increased 10 percent each year from 2011 to 2022, underscoring the startling results from a 2016 study that showed that 99 percent of those living in highly populated areas around the world can no longer see most stars, if any.
The category for lodging complements DarkSky’s existing certification program for International Dark Sky Places , of which there are more than 200, including Zion and Yellowstone national parks; the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in Australia ; the Namibrand Nature Reserve in southern Namibia; and even urban places, like Parc du Mont-Bellevue in the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec.
Response to news of the program was fairly immediate, said Mr. Brigagliano. “So far, nearly 100 resorts, retreat centers, ranches and other lodging properties from the United States, Canada, Britain, Thailand, Australia, India, Germany, Saudi Arabia and the Cook Islands have contacted us regarding the program. We are getting interest from a variety of businesses, from nonprofits to luxury, high-end properties.”
Where are the stars?
Inside the common area — a large tent that acts as a front desk, restaurant, snack bar and hang out — a couple from San Francisco with a dachshund had just finished registering. The woman who registered me took me by A.T.V. to my safari-style tent.
All the tents are within a soft yell of each other and all have decks, en-suite bathrooms with showers, and four vertical walls that provide more room than traditional pyramid-shaped tents. Inside mine was a king-size bed, two leather chairs and a wood-burning stove. My choice, the Stargazer (I paid $432, including taxes and fees), also has a sky-viewing window that arcs above the bed.
I stepped out on the deck. The valley was dark below dense clouds. Back inside, I could hear the patter of rain on canvas. I ditched my plan to walk to the on-site slot canyon — slot canyons can flood — and slid under the viewing window, which was dotted with raindrops. The prospects of a starry night seemed remote.
I zipped up my parka, wishing I had brought better shoes for hiking in the rain, and walked down to the main common area. The roasted trout ($25) looked tempting, but the cafeteria was uncomfortably cold. I pulled out a protein bar from my backpack and took a seat under one of the sheltered gathering areas, noticing how the rain transforms Utah’s striated Navajo sandstone into deeper hues of coral and ecru. The wide valley between myself and Grand Staircase might have been two miles or 20, the scale was so unfathomable. A couple from Idaho in oilskin jackets and hiking boots, who looked as though they could ice-pick up Mount Everest, joined me. Unlike me, they were better prepared for inclement weather, which hadn’t stopped them from hiking nearby canyons.
By 8 p.m. the rain had become a misty drizzle. Hoping for the best, I set my alarm for 3:30 a.m., around the time the outer regions of the Milky Way appear in the Northern Hemisphere (given the right conditions).
When the alarm went off, I opened my eyes to stars shining through the still-damp window. I got dressed, grabbed a battery-powered lantern and stepped out into the night. Above me, in all directions, the sky was at last unblocked; I could not have been more surprised.
I made my way down the dirt path, which was lit by small solar ground lights, to get closer to the canyon rim. Smoke from the stoves in several tents drifted up and disappeared. A jack rabbit crossed my path. I sat down on a patch of dry scrub. This was the Colorado Plateau, one of the darkest sections of the United States, and even with a remaining cloud or two, thousands of stars shone through the darkness. Was that the veil of an aloof Milky Way above me? With a clear view to the west, I was almost certain I could see Venus. Using my stargazer app, SkyView, I managed to find the constellations Orion and Leo.
I lay back and stayed there until the stars faded in the predawn sky and the morning light began its spectacular migration across the wide valley.

- Key Street: Michigan Ave. Leads to 7 Key Hotels in Chicago
A brief guide to all the MICHELIN Key hotels in Chicago.
Travel Hotels Chicago MICHELIN Keys
On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide announced its very first Key hotels in the United States — a brand new distinction recognizing the most outstanding hotels in the country. We're thrilled to report that in Chicago, eight hotels earned at least One Key. Of those, half make their home in the kinds of historic buildings that give this city its well-earned reputation as one of the most architecturally distinguished cities in the country. Follow Michigan Avenue north from the heart of the Loop to the Gold Coast and you’ll pass within two blocks of all but one of them. The Chicago Athletic Association sits within a Venetian Gothic landmark. The Gwen makes its home in a storied 1929 Art Deco skyscraper. The Pendry sets up shop in the masterpiece that is the 1929 Art Deco Carbide & Carbon Building. And the lower floors of the Viceroy make use of the meticulously-preserved, 1920s-vintage Cedar Hotel. There are Key hotels too in newer builds, among them the Peninsula (with uniformed bellboys and staffers who seem to know the name of each individual guest) and the Waldorf Astoria , its lobby a marble marvel. Below, explore the map and scroll down for more about each of the MICHELIN Guide’s eight hotels in Chicago.
The Eight KEY Hotels in Chicago:
