Inner Mongolia has a temperate continental climate with low and irregular rainfall and drastic shifts of temperature.

Spring (April to June) is windy and temperatures can rise unexpectedly.

Summer (July to August) is warm and short, with most of Inner Mongolia's modest rainfall.

Temperatures in autumn (September to October) drop sharply with frosts.

Winter (November to March) is long and freezing cold with the average monthly temperatures ranging from -12°C to -1°C (12–33°F).

As the temperature difference is large between morning and evening in the grasslands and desert areas, please bring warm coats, trousers, and walking boots when you visit there.

With its relatively high elevation, Inner Mongolian has strong ultraviolet rays. Please bring sunglasses, a hat, and sunblock with you.

In the popular tourist cities of Hohhot, Baotou, Ordos, and Hailar, there are plenty of choices of hotels, from international brands to local-standard ones.

In the different grasslands, many kinds of Mongolian yurt are available. For experiencing a nomads' life, we will only arrange a traditional Mongolian yurt with the best available facilities and quality.

In the desert areas, we could arrange a luxury desert hotel as well as camping in the wild.

Planning an Inner Mongolia itinerary for the DIY traveller isn’t an easy feat. China has a group tour culture, with limited information in English on how to travel independently. But you absolutely can plan your own Inner Mongolia itinerary (and I think it is way better this way!). In this article I am going to tell you all about our 10 day Inner Mongolia itinerary and which are the best spots to visit and why.

Why travel to Inner Mongolia?

Tourism in inner mongolia, when to visit inner mongolia, how to get to inner mongolia, how to travel around inner mongolia, 10 day inner mongolia itinerary, inner mongolia museum, zhoajun tomb, dazhao lamasery, dinosaur park, hulunbuir grassland, gegentala grassland, gobi desert, ghenghis khan mausoleum, inner mongolia itinerary.

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

Inner Mongolia, located in northern China , is a fascinating place to explore. From stargazing from outside of a yurt in the wild grasslands to traversing the sand dunes of the Gobi Desert, to learning about the dinosaur discoveries in Erenhot, there is plenty to keep you occupied in Inner Mongolia. In fact, I think that Inner Mongolia has the perfect blend of culture (definitely lots of culture!), adventure and relaxation opportunities.

There isn’t much information online about travelling in Inner Mongolia, which can make travelling in this region a bit daunting for the DIY tourist. Fear not, however! Planning your Inner Mongolia itinerary just got a little bit easier with this helpful guide from Tourism Teacher! Below I have shared with you everything that I learnt during my trip through Inner Mongolia and I have given recommendations on places to stay throughout too.

Tourism isn’t rife in Inner Mongolia, which is exactly why there isn’t much information available about planning a trip here. The area sees less than 2 million foreign visitors per year, with not all of these being tourists . There are 4 tourism bureaus in the region, however, and tourism is steadily growing. There is plenty to see and do, and it should definitely be on your list! With tourism having such a huge economical impact on China, there is an effort being made to drive more tourists to Inner Mongolia…

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

Inner Mongolia is suitable for visiting year-round. As well as this, the area covers a wide range of longitude and latitude meaning different regions have different temperatures and landscapes. The grasslands are best visited in summer, for example, whereas you’ll want to visit the desert areas in the autumn. Forest parts of Inner Mongolia are a definite winter destination! From April to October, temperatures range from 14°C to a whopping 29°C.

Getting from China to Inner Mongolia is fairly simple in itself. You can drive from Beijing in less than 8 hours – in fact, driving from most parts of northern China will take less than 12 hours. The drive from Shanxi takes 11 hours, and from Tianjin it takes just over 9 hours. You need a Chinese drivers license to drive in China, however. Expats can apply for one, but if you’re a holidaymakers it may be worth seeing if you can hire a driver to take you from China to Inner Mongolia.

You can also fly from Beijing to Inner Mongolia. The flight to Huhhot’s Baita International Airport only takes 3 hours. To do it even cheaper, get from Beijing to Tianjin and fly from there – the flight is less than 1.5 hours making the overall journey time much similar.

You can also get from China to Inner Mongolia by train – it takes roughly 5 1/2 hours on the high speed train. You can generally do this for less than £50!

Public transport isn’t an option when it comes to travelling between cities in Inner Mongolia. However, there are specific tours you can do which show you all of the best bits – or, if you want more of the DIY aspect, you can hire a driver. Sites like Synotrip allow you to connect with local drivers who can take you wherever you want to go. Some of the best tours include:

5-day Private & Custom Local Tour in Inner Mongolia

10-Days Private Gansu & Inner Mongolia Tour

9-Day Grand Inner Mongolia Adventure through Hailar, Enhe, Shiwei, Erguna, Manzhouli & Aershan

Below I have outlined our 10 day Inner Mongolia itinerary. We generally spent two-three nights in each spot. You can easily mix up the route and order to suit you. Driving distances between each location are generally 3-5 hours.

Flying to Hohhot means you are in a great starting place. Even if it’s not where you plan to begin your Inner Mongolia adventure, it is still worth visiting! There is plenty to do here in Hohhot, and you won’t struggle to find places to stay either…

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

Delve into the history of the nomadic Mongolians. You’ll see saddles, traditional dress and archery equipment, as well as more ancient history such as fossils, bone carvings and more. There is even an exhibit dedicated to Gengis Khan.

This famous tomb is said to be the resting place of Wang Zaojhun, although she isn’t actually buried here. She was a commoner who married a nomadic chieftain, and her tomb is famous for its beautiful scenery and a legend that says plants continue to grow on the mound in the autumn/winter months.

This is a huge Tibetan Buddhist temple, known for the silver Buddha inside. It is also the earliest Huangjiao monastery built in Hohhot! There is a lot to see here, from gold pillars etched with dragons to hollow stone lions. Reach the Dazhao Lamasery by bus from the railway station.

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

Where to stay in Hohhot: We stayed at the Sheraton . It was great value for money, great location and super clean (which is not always the case when travelling in China!). Tip- book an executive room for free drinks (including happy hour), snacks and dinner! Click here to check prices and availability on your travel dates.

Erenhot is located in the Gobi Desert area of Inner Mongolia. It is famous for the number of dinosaur discoveries there have been here, as well as the giant handprint in the north – said to be a Buddha’s palm print. Accommodation isn’t as easy to find here, but that’s not to say it can’t be done!

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

About 10km outside of the city, the Dinosaur Park is a huge desert space perfect for history and dinosaur lovers. See fossils and petrified tree stumps, *massive* dinosaur statues, an excavation site and more! There are plenty of very fun photo opportunities, and it’s never busy here due to the remote location. You’ll find information about dinosaurs here, too, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Dinosaur Museum too!

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

Where to stay in Erenhot: Finding accommodation was a challenge so we were delighted to find Moli International Hotel ! The price was really low so I did not have high expectations, but I shouldn’t have worried- we had a whole suite to ourselves!

There are many beautiful grasslands throughout Inner Mongolia. In fact, it is the Grasslands that attract many people to Inner Mongolia.

These famous grasslands are large grassy areas used for grazing, but they are also big tourist draws now too. This is largely down to their sheer beauty!

This is often hailed as the very best of all the grasslands across Inner Mongolia – if not in the whole world. It is located at Xinbalhu Left Banner, Hulunbuir City . It is named after two lakes: Hulun Lake and Buir Lake. They appear as two stunning jade belts, and add to the overall beauty of the ara. Covering millions of acres, the Hulunbuir Grassland is one of the 4 biggest grasslands in the world. There are over 3,000 rivers and 500 lakes here, with rich types of grass and a very well-preserved natural environment. You can see wildlife here, get a glimpse into the life of rural Inner Mongolians, and even go horse riding. If you’re here in September you might even catch the amazing Naadam Festival!

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

Another fantastic location to experience the Naadam Festival, this breathtaking grassland area has rolling grassy hills and plenty to see/do. Ride a camel, admire the scenery, and meet the locals. You’ll get a warm welcome from the herdsmen and their families. They’ll invite you to taste traditional Mongolian food and take part in local activities like listening to the beautiful toasting songs or appreciating traditional Mongolian dances.

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

Which grassland to stay at: Despite seeing loads of grasslands on our travels around Inner Mongolia, we really struggled to find anywhere that we could book online. This is because China has a big ‘tour group’ culture and most stays at a Grassland are arranged by a tour operator. Fortunately though we were able to book a stay in a luxury yurt (for just a few Yuan!) at Xilamuren Mongolian Prarie Resort .

Travelling to the Gobi desert is a once in a lifetime experience, think sand dunes as far as the eye can see! The beautiful Gobi Desert has different resorts across it, all with various entertainment on offer. From luxury eco-lodge Three Camel Lodge for pure relaxation, to the singing sand dunes located in the Khongor area… you’ll fall in love with the wide range of experiences on offer here!

You can also spot dinosaur skeletons at Algui Ulaan Tsav, explore the Ongii Khiid Monastery ruins, sleep in a ger – the Mongolian version of a yurt. You can hike through the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, which has plenty of attractions on offer, and see beautiful sunrises throughout the desert.

Inner Mongolia Itinerary

Similarly to the grasslands, there are very few tourism resorts that allow individuals to book online. We booked a room at the Hangjinqi Green Seven Star Lake Hotel , which has a range of rooms and yurts on offer. Whilst this accommodation was quite nice, don’t be fooled by the name- it is definitiely not ‘a 7 star hotel ‘.

A far cry from deserts and grasslands, Baotou is a huge metropolitan city. You won’t struggle to find accommodation here! It is home to the largest Tibetan monastery in Inner Mongolia, and has a 39,000-capacity sports stadium.

The city is known for processing rare earth minerals, mined in Bayan Obo – and the city is now the largest Chinese source of these minerals. Because of this, however, it is also home to a rather toxic lake …

There are grasslands too, of course, because this is Inner Mongolia after all. Saihantalah Grasslands Park is a large (5.5 km square) urban park in central Baotou – home to thirty wild animals and birds species!

Ordos is mainly rural, but does have a metropolitan city area too. This has been referred to as China’s biggest ghost town ! But there are all sorts to do outside of the city, like the Ordos wildlife park and ore singing sand dunes. You can also visit the Genghis Khan mausoleum, and you’ll find a few places to stay in Ordos !

This is a temple dedicated to Genghis Khan, and he is worshipped here. It is more often referred to as a shrine as the khan’s body has never actually been here; it is a beautiful location well worth visiting, and the main centre of the worship of Genghis Khan himself.

Whether you are going to join a group tour, hire a private driver or drive yourself around Inner Mongolia, I promise that your Inner Mongolia itinerary will be full of adventure!

Hi dear Vivien,

our journey is about to end. We are on our way to Guilin airport. It has been an awesome trip indeed. Each destination was well chosen and everything went smoothly. I am super happy for my sister and me to be able to experience such a wonderful travel through the most stunning landscapes in China. Thank you for the perfect organization. And thank you for the nice gift we got in Guilin. Really appreciate it.

My sister with her fan. We also got a beautiful stamp and ink. Thank you very much!

Zhangjiajie Tour

Hi Samantha,

Sunrise was very nice and checked us in to a nice room at 8:30 am. It’s been a while since we were in Shanghai, and it is a wonderful, clean city that’s very vibrant. It has been sunny and warm the last four days.

Dear Wing Zeng,

My family and I have now arrived safely back at home in Bangkok. We had a wonderful time on the cruise, and we would like to thank you very much for assisting us on the whole process, from booking the cabins to arranging transportation from Jingzhou to Maoping port. We are very impressed with your service.

As for your questions, here is my response:

1A: Wing Zeng always responds to our emails very promptly. At the beginning when I planned to book the cruise, Wing Zeng has been very patient to respond to all my questions about the cruise itinerary and the cabin types. I am very happy with her service.

2A: With Wing Zeng's help, our tour arrangements were very smooth. Our family travel with one senior and one small child, so we were very careful about transportation to and from the port. On the day of embarkation, Wing Zeng helped us book a van transfer directly from our hotel in Jingzhou to the port, which made the embarkation process very smooth and enjoyable.

3A: Definitely. I highly recommend your service to anyone who wants to take the Yangtze cruises.

4A: I'm very satisfied with your service. Our travel consultant is very helpful and professional.

5A: It would be nice if you could give a little warning that the water level in Chongqing might be too low around this time of year. Originally, our cruise was scheduled to end at Chongqing Chaotianmen port. But because of the low water level, we had to disembark somewhere else and took a 2-hour drive to Chaotianmen. The cruise arranges the transfer smoothly and it worked out fine in the end. But if this is something that happens usually around this time of year, it would be nice to be given a little warning beforehand.

That also depends on which areas you are interested in to discover! For a classic Inner Mongolia nature and culture seeking for the first time, most travelers plan about 3-4 days to Hohhot to discover the city highlights with 1-2 days staying at Huitengxile Grassland or Xilamuren Grassland. Apart from Hohhot, a large portion also extend to nearby Ordos (1-2.5 days) to discover the cool Kubuqi Desert (Xiangshawan or Yemingsha) with the best city highlights, Baotou (1-2 days) with outstanding temples and monasteries, etc. for a central Inner Mongolia savory. If you want to discover the best grassland sightseeing and exotic ethnic flavors in China, plan 4-5 days to appreciate Hunlunbuir Grassland, Russian styled Shiwei, Enhe or Linjiang town with more fabulous lakes and dense forests of the northeastern part of Inner Mongolia. While, if you like the golden Ejina Populus Euphratica Forest and Badain Jaran Desert, it usually takes about 3-4 days for each destination. An in-depth Inner Mongolia trip from the east, via center, and to the west can take more than 11-15 days based on your interests. It is also a great idea to plan your trip to Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Datong, Xining, Dunhuang, Xinjiang, Guilin, Chengdu, Tibet, Yangtze River, Yunnan, etc. in China to enjoy more highlights and save more money! Ultimate Inner-Mongolia Guide

Introduction.

Inner Mongolia guide

Inner-Mongolia is one of the most misunderstood regions in the world, with many not realizing even what the difference between Inner and Outer Mongolia is. In short, the difference between Inner and Outer Mongolia is that Inner-Mongolia is a province of China, whilst outer Mongolia is an independent sovereign country.

For more on the differences between the two, check this article .

Inner-Mongolia is also one of the least understood and off the beaten track regions of China, featuring the mausoleum of Ghengis Khan, the ghost city of Ordos and sadly, some of the most polluted cities on earth.

Check out this Video of YPT’s John McGovern exploring Ordos Inner Mongolia below

Inner Mongolia

Inner Mongolia (内蒙古, Nèi Měnggǔ or in Mongolian, Öbür mongɣul) is a Mongol Autonomous Region in northern China. It borders a number of Chinese provinces, such as Shanxi, Gansu, and Mongolia’s independent nation.

Inner-Mongolia is one of the most scarcely populated provinces of China. Don’t be confused by the name as the majority of the population are now Han Chinese . Of the 25 million people that live in Inner-Mongolia, around 17% are ethnic Mongolians.

Cities in Inner-Mongolia

Hohhot – The capital city and a bit of an industrial wasteland. Not all that much going on here, but it makes a pleasant stop if you are heading on to Ulan-Bator in Mongolia.

Ordos and Kangbashi – The twin ghost cities of China and one of our favorite places to visit. Check out our Ordos tours here.

Ejina – Located in the mystical Gobi Desert .

Erlian – Not all that much going on here, but enough to warrant a night if you are travelling through.

Languages of inner-Mongolia

Officials at least Mongolian and Mandarin are both official languages, but in reality, Chinese will serve you better. If you would like to learn a few handy Mongolia phrases, check out our handy guide (link).

What is there to do in Inner-Mongolia?

Each part of Inner-Mongolia has its own things, themes and charms, but unless you are planning on visiting Outer-Mongolia, this represents the next best thing. Stay in Yurts, and home-stays, eat Mongolian food, camel riding. Plenty of rustic experiences await the intrepid traveler here!

Safety concerns in Inner-Mongolia

There are periodically cases of the bubonic plague that affect the area. Make sure you watch travel advisories for the region and have travel insurance. Crime tends to be low level and opportunistic.

And that is our brief guide to the province of Inner-Mongolia check our Eurasian Adventure Tour and Ordos Ghost City Tours if you’d like to see this unique part of China.

Mongolia is a vast and unique country with authentic nomadic culture and diverse landscapes. It’s essential to be aware of the climate, which can be extreme with harsh winters and hot summers. Additionally, understanding the nomadic lifestyle and the importance of respecting local customs and traditions is crucial before planning a trip to Mongolia.

The ideal duration for a visit to Mongolia depends on an individual’s preferences and interests. However, a minimum of two weeks is recommended to explore the vast landscapes, experience the nomadic culture, and visit key attractions like the Gobi Desert, Khuvsgul Lake, and the capital city, Ulaanbaatar.

Mongolia attracts travelers that seek adventure, cultural immersion, and a connection with untouched nature. The country offers breathtaking landscapes, including expansive steppes, rugged mountains, and the famous Gobi Desert. The nomadic way of life, with traditional yurts (ger camps), horseback riding, and the hospitality of the locals is what draws travelers looking for an authentic and off-the-beaten-path experience.

Mongolia is generally considered safe for tourists. Crime rates are relatively low, and violent crime is rare. However, travelers should exercise standard precautions such as safeguarding belongings and avoiding isolated areas, especially in urban centers.

Mongolia is best known for its nomadic culture, vast landscapes, and the historical legacy of Genghis Khan. The country boasts the expansive Gobi Desert, the pristine Khuvsgul Lake, and the iconic Mongolian steppe. Traditional activities such as horseback riding, attending Naadam festivals, and staying in ger camps contribute to the unique allure of Mongolia.

Travel to Inner Mongolia: The Complete Guide

Rows of yurts in Xilamuren grasslands

In this guide to travel in Inner Mongolia you will find:

  • How to decide whether to use a travel agency or make your own way;
  • A guide to Inner Mongolia’s top sites and attractions;
  • A breakdown of costs in Inner Mongolia including travel, accommodation and activities;
  • Advice on the best time to visit Inner Mongolia and some useful packing suggestions;
  • Travel tips to make the best out of your trip to this beautiful part of China: local customs, food, and shopping.

As Inner Mongolia is very big, this guide aims to introduce you to some of the region’s key sights and attractions to help you best plan your trip. If you would like more details about a particular place, please comment below.

Before you book your trip: agency vs. your own way

The first time I traveled to Inner Mongolia I booked myself onto an organized agency tour . My reasoning behind it was this:

  • I had very little time to organize my trip;
  • I only had a week off and wanted to see as much of Inner Mongolia as possible;
  • I had not been in China very long and was not confident in my ability to get by on my own or to communicate in Mandarin;
  • I was traveling alone and wanted to meet other people;
  • The agency sorted out everything including my travel from Beijing: easy life!

Although I fell in love with Inner Mongolia on that trip, my experience with this agency was very mixed. Here are the pros and cons that I experienced with a Beijing-based agency organizing Inner Mongolia tours:

  • Everything was organized for me which meant very little planning aside from what to pack;
  • I was able to discover some of Inner Mongolia’s culture and history through our very knowledgeable guide;
  • I made some really awesome friends on the tour.
  • It was a much more expensive option than organizing everything myself;
  • We were always taken to the most touristy sites at the most touristy times which made it difficult to experience authentic Inner Mongolia;
  • A lot of the tour (as can often happen in China) was based around getting us to buy stuff or paying extra for activities. For example, a lot of Inner Mongolia tours will claim that horse-riding is included in the package but will in fact make you pay more for this when you get there;
  • Lack of flexibility to do any of my own exploring;
  • My biggest issue with the tour was how much time we had to spend in transport vs. how much time we actually got to see stuff.

If you have limited time to travel to Inner Mongolia and limited time to organize your trip, booking through a tour agency may be a good choice. However, I recommend not booking a tour that is too ambitious with its itinerary or you will spend your entire trip on a bus… Inner Mongolia is a huge region!

I also recommend booking a local tour from Hohhot rather than booking one with a large tour operator from Beijing or Shanghai like I did. The reasons for this are:

  • You will get better value for your money;
  • Tours will be smaller and more flexible. You can also book several short tours instead of one long one to experience more of the diversity Inner Mongolia has to offer;
  • You are guaranteed guides with strong local knowledge;
  • You are supporting the local economy.

Some of the best tours I’ve experienced and heard great feedback about are those organized by Anda’s guesthouse. This family-run hostel offers a good variety of tours at one of the most cost effective prices in Hohhot. The staff and guides are very friendly and are also always happy to help you with your own travel plans.

Making Your Own Way

The second time I visited Inner Mongolia, I was determined to go beyond the beaten path and make my own way through the region as much as possible. I was not disappointed! I got to discover the Inner Mongolia of my imagination with lush rolling grasslands and sunsets over the desert.

That being said, I was fortunate enough to be able to travel this way because:

  • I had plenty of time to spare and was flexible about how long I could stay in the region;
  • I had a good travel companion;
  • By this point, I could speak enough Mandarin to get by.

If you are in a situation similar to the one above, I definitely recommend making your own way as much as possible. Inner Mongolians are very helpful and you should easily be able to convince a taxi driver to help you organize a homestay in a yurt or negotiate the bus system to get to the more remote parts of the region.

Go north and go west! These parts of the region are more remote but boast some of the most beautiful scenic spots in China. Be warned that some areas of the far West region of Inner Mongolia require travel permits, meaning that using a local tour company to obtain these is inevitable.

If you don’t speak Mandarin but still want to escape the tourist track do not despair! Friendly hostels in cities like Hohhot can help you plan and organize expeditions to more remote areas. You can also ask them to write down any Mandarin characters (for example asking for a bus ticket to a place) you might need on your travels.

Where to go in Inner Mongolia

When it comes to cities in Inner Mongolia, perhaps this article says it best, describing the regions largest cities Hohhot – which by the way is the capital of the Province – and Baotou as having that ‘on-the-brink-of-something-big’ feel. That is to say they are not particularly beautiful cities but they have a certain excitement and charm, and business is booming!

Although Inner Mongolia’s main charm comes from its natural scenery, the cities also hold some attractions well worth a visit.

Here are my top recommendations for things to do in Hohhot and Baotou:

  • Dazhao temple : This colourful temple is Hohhot’s oldest temple built in the 16th century. It contains a 2.5m silver Sakyamuni Buddha statue and is worth the visit for those interested in sampling one of China’s more impressive temples.
  • Five-Pagoda Temple : This temple is renowned in China for being the only Indian style Chinese temple. It holds an amazing 1,500 frescoes of Buddha and is covered in Mongolian and Tibetan script.
  • Inner Mongolia Museum : I am admittedly not a museum person, so I was surprised to find myself enjoying the eclectic collection of dinosaur fossils, ancient nomadic artifacts, exhibits showcasing local fauna and flora and even a section dedicated to Chinese space exploration!
  • Walk around in the Old Town : Hohhot is a great place to simply wander around. A portion of Tongdao Road, also referred to as ‘Islam style street’ on TripAdvisor, boasts beautiful Muslim architecture and some really tasty Halal restaurants.

Admittedly, there is not much to do within Baotou itself. However, the city is a good base to visit the following destinations:

  • Genghis Kahn Mausoleum : The world famous Mongolian hero’s mausoleum is close to the city of Ordos , 115 km from Baotou. History buffs love the mausoleum whilst others argue it is not worth the long trip. The mausoleum can be reached by bus from Baotou.
  • Wudangzhao Monastery : One of the most impressive Tibetan Buddhist lamaseries outside of Tibet, this destination is fairly off the beaten track. Monks are very friendly but not many of them speak English. The monastery is approximately 70 km Northeast of Baotou.

Horses in Xilamuren grasslands in Inner Mongolia

Near Hohhot

There are three grasslands close enough to Hohhot for short trips:

  • Xilamuren grasslands : Closest to Hohhot (90 Km) and the first grasslands to be developed as a tourist attraction, these tend to be overcrowded and packed with tourist buses in peak seasons. More worryingly, over-grazing and tourism in recent years have affected the grass leaving it sparse and browning in certain areas. Although these grasslands are host to a number of activities such as horseriding, I would recommend avoiding them if you have other options.
  • Gegentala grasslands : These grasslands are roughly a two and a half hour drive from Hohhot. Although they are not yet showing signs of desertification like Xilamuren, they remain equally as tourist-oriented. Gengentala is home to rows and rows of yurts serving as accommodation. They do have the plus side of being equipped with modern comforts such as toilets and as they cater to the Chinese tourist you will even find a nightclub or two! That being said, Gegentala is a good option for those who cannot travel too far outside of Hohhot and offers a range of activities from horseriding to wrestling to traditional mutton banquets held in yurts.
  • Huitengxile grasslands : If you have a bit more time, these grasslands lay a three and a half hour drive from Hohhot. There you will find a very similar set up as Gegentala in terms of accommodation and activities, but less busy. Be warned however that some travelers complain the grass here is not as lush and green as they had hoped.

Further away: Hulunbuir grasslands

If you want to visit one of the most beautiful grasslands in China, this is the place. This is where you experience luxuriant green plains, crystal blue lakes, roaming horses and all those things you imagine Mongolia to be.

Found in Northeastern Inner Mongolia, Hulunbuir is over 2,000 km from Hohhot so more of a mission to access. The closest airport is Hailaer, only 7 km from Hulunbuir. A flight from Hohhot takes just over two hours. The closest train station is also Hailaer station. You can get a sleeper train from Hohhot for a tenth of the price of a flight but it will take you 40 hours. It is actually faster to get a train from Beijing (30 hours) so you may consider doing this if you want to visit this area specifically.

In Hulunbuir, you will find similar tourist activities as in the other grasslands but will also have opportunities to discover the environment in a more intimate way. Hire a local driver, get involved in a horse-riding tour that spans over several days or simply go hiking. There is so much to do here! It is quite hard to find information on activities here beyond the organized tours that leave from Beijing so I recommend reading TripAdvisor or Lonely Planet forums for other traveler tips or simply waiting till you get there to plan your time there.

Desert resort in Inner Mongolia

Near Baotou: Resonant Sand Gorge (or Singing Sand Ravine)

The Resonant Sand Gorge, known in Chinese as Xiang Sha Wan is an area of the Kubuqi Desert about one hour’s drive from Baotou. It gets its name from the reported ‘singing sands’ that can be heard there, making a noise some describe as similar to that of an airplane. However, travelers remain divided on whether such a noise can actually be heard there. Personally, I heard nothing.

The Resonant Sand Gorge has become increasingly popular in recent years and has been developed to cater specifically to tourists. Think camel rides, dune buggies, sand sleds and a plethora of other sand-based activities.

Despite the undeniably touristy aspect of this experience, the scenery is admittedly still breathtaking and the rides are actually good fun. For someone who had never experienced a desert (such as myself), this is still a great experience.

A few recommendations:

  • Pay more and get the chairlift: this is about an extra 40 Yuan but it is worth avoiding having to climb sand dunes in boiling hot sand. The view is much nicer from the top anyway;
  • Get the shoe covers: these are an extra 10 Yuan but will ensure you don’t burn your feet of find sand in your shoes for days;
  • Try the sand sled: it is one of the cheaper activities and sledding down the sand dunes is more exhilarating than any roller coaster!
  • The camel riding is one of the more expensive activities (around 180 Yuan for one hour) but will enable you to see more of the desert.
  • Before paying for an activity, find out how much time it lasts. Some are very expensive and only last 5 minutes!

Further away: Tengger desert and Badain Jaran desert

These deserts can be found to the West of Inner Mongolia and are much more difficult to access from Baotou or Hohhot. They almost warrant a trip in themselves, as they are more remote and difficult to organize travel in.

Here are a few key facts about both:

Tengger Desert:

  • Fourth largest desert in China;
  • Borders with Ningxia Province;
  • Visit: Moon lake and Swan Lake;
  • Good for: camel-riding;
  • Access from: Yingchuan City.

Badain Jaran Desert:

  • 3rd largest sand dune on earth;
  • Borders with Gansu Province;
  • Visit: many lakes and dunes;
  • Good for: hiking (especially up the tallest dune);

How much does a trip to Inner Mongolia cost?

Transport to inner mongolia.

Unless traveling to more distant locations such as Hulubuir or Badain Jaran desert, most travelers will start their trip in Hohhot.

To reach Hohhot:

  • By flight : Flights from Beijing to Hohhot’s Baita International Airport take around 45 minutes with Air China, China Southern and China Eastern all flying this route. The airport is 15 km from the city center. The airport bus costs 5 Yuan while a taxi to the center costs around 30 Yuan.
  • By train : A train from Beijing to Hohhot takes between 6 ½ and 11 hours and costs about 150 Yuan for a hard sleeper. Click here to read our complete guide for traveling in China by train.
  • By bus : The long-distance bus from Beijing Liuliqiao Station (A1, Liuliqiao Nan Li, Fengtai District) to Hohhot takes 8 hours and costs 150 Yuan.

Find out more about how to get to Hohhot here .

Traveling to Baotou? Read this excellent article on how to get there.

Transport within Inner Mongolia

The easiest way to travel between cities in Inner Mongolia is by bus. Some travelers also choose to hire a driver to get to Inner Mongolia’s main attractions. Most hotels or hostels should be able to help you do this.

It is also possible to travel by train between Hohhot and Baotou. The journey takes one hour and twenty minutes and costs about 25 Yuan on a hard seat.

Accommodation options in Hohhot and Baotou are largely made up of hotels. Besides Anda’s Guesthouse in Hohhot, there is little in the way of hostels in these cities.

This article gives a good summary of Hohhot and Baotou’s more upscale hotels. You can check them on Agoda.com:

  • Shangri-La Hotel Hohhot
  • Holiday Inn Hotel Hohhot
  • Inner Mongolia Jin Jiang International hotel
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou

For more budget options check Lonely Planet’s budget hotel section or, again, Agoda.com .

Accommodation choices for more remote areas will be limited so be sure to check ahead for availability.

The table below gives you an idea of the price of some of Inner Mongolia’s top sites and activities. Be aware that the prices are subject to change as these have already increased dramatically in recent years.

Planning your trip to Inner Mongolia

The best time to visit.

Inner Mongolia can get very cold in the winter and travel plans can be affected by snow or blizzards so avoid this period if you can help it.

It is widely accepted that the best time to visit Inner Mongolia is in the summer between May and August. Visit in July if you wish to witness the region’s Naadam festival commemorating the 1921 Mongolian revolution. During this time athletes will compete in wrestling, archery and horse racing in grasslands across the region.

What to bring

The region’s proximity to the desert means it can be very warm during the day but become very cold at night and in the early morning. Bring a good mix of clothing for this range of temperatures.

You will experience a lot of direct sunlight in Inner Mongolia’s vast expanses so don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and some lip balm as it can get very dry!

Lastly, a good pair of trainers will go a long way in your grassland and desert adventures.

Eating mutton in Inner Mongolian yurt

Travel tips

Local customs.

Inner Mongolia has a lot of traditions and customs specific to the region, which may be useful to know if visiting a Mongolian family. Most guides will explain these to you once you are there but here are a few to look out for:

  • Do not walk through a flock or herd in the grasslands (walk around) as this is considered an offense to their owner;
  • It is customary for Mongolian families to serve visitors a bowl of milk tea. Accept this with both hands and knock your bowl with your spoon if you do not want a refill;
  • It is also custom for families to serve local liquor to their guests in welcome and to offer a toast. It is polite to accept the drink and thank the host even if you are not actually planning on drinking it;
  • Mongolian families will present guests with a hada (piece of silk) and sing a song of blessing as a sign of welcome. It is tradition to accept the hada with both hands and to thank the host by crossing your arms across your chest.

Be prepared to eat A LOT of mutton in Inner Mongolia. Some typical dishes to try: Roasted whole sheep, Roasted gigot, Mutton hotpot and Handlebar mutton.

Want a break from all the mutton? Try these delicious buckwheat noodles in Hohhot.

In terms of drinks, the salty milk tea is a definite staple. Or try the local beer Xai Bei.

For some good old-fashioned souvenir shopping try Lao Jie (Old Street) in Hohhot. Some traditional Mongolian souvenirs include Mongolian silverware, Mongolian carpets, Mongolian knives with a sculpted blade, ox horn handicrafts and cashmere.

I am just wondering if foreigners need to register or apply for anything in advance of a visit. I’m thinking of visiting in September, but haven’t been to China for many years, so I’m a bit unsure.

Hello. Thanks for the post. Me and my friend is planning to rent a car both for Xilamuren/Gegenta Grasslands and Resonant Sand Gorge. The only concern I have if it is possible to book a yurt in advance? It’s kinda risky to find a place on the day itself. :)

Thank you so much!

Hi, thanks for the article. I am planning a trip to Ordos in Jul with the spouse and am trying to decide whether to go independently or with a travel agency. Our plan is to spend just 2 days here, making a day trip to Resonant Sand Bay and exploring Kangbashi the rest of the time. Our base would be a hotel in downtown Kangbashi. Could I find out how practical it is to hire a taxi on the spot to bring us around for the 2 days and how much that might cost?

Hi, great article.

How easy is it to spend a few days walking/riding in the grasslands and staying in yurts. Is it easy to organise there? Ideally I would like to avoid a tour group.

Also any tips for travelling this area on a budget? Thanks

Hello William, your questions are quite general. I think we kind of cover them in the article!

Hi, thank you so much for a great and informative article! I’m planning on visiting the Hulunbuir grasslands in August for roughly 3-4 days and I wanted to know if we’d need the tick-borne encephalitis vaccination? Websites recommend it for people staying more than a month, or for short-term travellers who will be mainly outside (camping, hiking etc.) but if we’re just planning a homestay in yurts and some horse-riding, do you think we’d need it? Do you know of any other vaccinations we must get or should consider getting? Thanks in advance! Viola | A Piece of Viola

I am planning to go in July but will be visiting Heilongjiang before heading over. May I know how I can arrange for a local guide or private tour? And is it safe as I am a female traveler alone.

Hello Samantha,

please read our articles about tours in China. China is relatively safe.

Thanks for your excellent article. I am an older male traveller. I’d rather like to join a small group when I am travelling, simply it a bit lonely doing by myself all the time. I am coming to Huhhot sometime in the first 2 weeks of June 2017. Are there any small tour companies that allow a solo to join their groups? I’d like to join a 5 – 7 day tour. See a bit of everything. No real itinerary, apart from an aversion to souvenir shops. And no, I don’t want to have my own driver and guide… a tour group of one it not my idea of fun. Keep up the good work. Chris S.( From Melbourne, Australia )

You should look for a local travel agency that offer this kind of tours, the problem is that Inner Mongolia isn’t a popular touristic destination among international travelers so it might be a bit hard to join group tours.
