American Airlines' pet policy

international pet travel american airlines

American Airlines only allows passengers to carry on cats and dogs; no other types of pets are allowed. According to the American Airlines pet policy , you can bring a cat or dog along (assuming they meet the size and age requirements) on most flights up to 12 hours or flights to or from the following locations:

  • The 48 contiguous United States.
  • The United States and Canada.
  • Puerto Rico.
  • St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

American Airlines charges a $125 charge for each one-way itinerary where your pet accompanies you in the cabin. You'll also incur an additional $125 charge on any one-way itinerary within the U.S. with more than a four-hour voluntary stopover. You might be able to recoup some or all of the fees if you charge it on a credit card that offers airline fee credits .

Additionally, the American Airlines pet policy prohibits pets from traveling in first or business class on the following aircraft types:

You'll want to make sure you book your pet early as part of your reservation. Unlike the United Airlines pet policy , American Airlines publishes the number of pets allowed in the cabin on each flight. So, we know American Airlines only allows up to seven kennels on its mainline flights (although service animals don't count toward this limit).

Meanwhile, American will only accept five kennels per flight — and a maximum of one carrier in first class — for American Eagle flights. While American has largely eliminated change fees , you'll be stuck rescheduling your trip if your particular flight has already reached its cap for in-cabin animals.

Lastly, American Airlines considers a pet carrier a carry-on item. So, if you're bringing along a pet, you'll only be permitted a personal item along with your pet carrier. Any other bags will need to be checked, with the appropriate fees applied.

American Airlines' pet carrier requirements

international pet travel american airlines

The American Airlines pet policy allows for both hard-sided and soft-sided carriers. Hard-sided carriers have different size restrictions based on whether your flight is on American Airlines or American Eagle, American's regional carrier.

Hard-sided kennels can be no larger than 19 inches by 13 inches by 9 inches on mainline flights and no larger than 16 inches by 12 inches by 8 inches on American Eagle flights. However, the American Airlines pet policy recommends soft-sided carriers, which can be no larger than 18 inches by 11 inches by 11 inches on both mainline and American Eagle flights.

Lastly, the American pet policy states that the animal must be able to stand up and turn around in the pet carrier .

American Airlines' pet cargo policy

American Airlines will only allow a pet to travel in cargo if you are a member of the U.S. military on active duty or a U.S. State Department Foreign Service employee traveling on official orders. There are several additional requirements for a pet traveling in cargo which you can find on the American Airlines website .

How to use the American Airlines pet policy

international pet travel american airlines

The only way to use the American Airlines pet policy is to call reservations to add a pet to your reservation. An agent will be able to help you with adding a pet to your record, assuming there is still capacity for kennels on your preferred flights.

Bottom line

The American Airlines pet policy can make it challenging to travel with your pet. You won't be able to bring anything other than a cat or dog on board. And American is one of several airlines that severely restrict the ability to have your animal travel in the cargo hold.

The American Airlines pet policy contains some restrictions on the size of kennels on certain flights and destinations. Finally, American Airlines will only accept a certain number of pets in the cabin per flight, so you'll need to reserve space for your pet early.

Flying with pets? Here's what to know.

By Anne Marie Lee

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 4:20 PM EDT / CBS News

Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing.

Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.

For example, American Airlines  recently revised its policies  so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.

Cargo, check-in or carry-on?

Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions.

Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo.

A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. (You can learn more about the differences between cargo, check-in and carry-on options  here , including warnings about the  dangers  involved when pets travel in the cargo hold.)

Carry-on pets

Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.

"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was found as a stray puppy in 2021.

In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum.

image000000-1.jpg

Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced.

"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."

Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it."

Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.

"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.

Safety and comfort

For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety.

"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.

Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation  and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.

Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024.  In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website.

On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which Rauch said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours.

Here's a rundown of U.S. airlines' pet travel policies, along with fees and and restrictions:

American Airlines just made it easier and cheaper to bring pets on flights

  • American Airlines updated its policy to make flying with pets easier.
  • Now, flyers can board with a pet in addition to a carry-on bag or a personal item.
  • Before, flyers with a pet could only bring one small item. Any other carry-ons had to be checked.

Insider Today

American Airlines has streamlined its policy for passengers traveling with pets.

The airline is now allowing passengers to bring pets inside the cabin alongside a regular carry-on bag or a personal item, according to the Associated Press . However, passengers can not bring both a carry-on bag and a personal item.

Related stories

Previously, passengers who traveled with a pet could only bring one small item that fit beneath the seat in front of them, the outlet reported. Larger carry-on bags had to be checked for a $35 fee on top of the standard $150 pet fee .

Carry-on pets refer to cats or dogs that meet the specified requirements for age, size, and destination, according to its policy. Pets can also be placed in American Airlines cargo.

"On March 28, American updated its cabin pet policy allowing customers who are traveling with a pet to bring a personal item or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bins," an American Airlines representative told BI. "We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American."

The latest policy update comes after American Airlines announced in February it will raise checked bag fees . One checked bag used to cost $30, and the second was $40. Now, the first checked bag for domestic flights is $35, and the second is $45.

The airline also changed how customers earn frequent flyer miles and loyalty points.

Previously, the airline counted the pet as the carry-on bag and travelers were not permitted to bring another roller bag with them.

The change went into effect on March 28.

Passengers flying with a carry-on pet, however, will not be able to bring a large carry-on item that fits in the overhead bin and a personal item at the same time, and must choose one or the other.

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” an airline spokesperson told T+L.

American charges $150 per kennel for carry-on pets, according to the airline . Carry-on pets are allowed on most flights up to 12 hours within the United States, between the U.S. and Canada, to Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, and St. Thomas.

Pets brought in the cabin must be small enough to “fit comfortably” inside a closed carrier and fit under the seat in front. The airline recommends travelers use a soft-sided collapsible kennel.

Other airlines similarly restrict passengers who are traveling with carry-on pets from bringing a large carry-on bag. Delta Air Lines, for example, counts the pet’s kennel as a passenger’s carry-on bag and only allows travelers to bring an additional personal item, according to the airline .

Like American’s new policy, Southwest allows passengers traveling with a carry-on pet to bring either a personal item or a carry-on item with them in addition to their companion.

When flying with pets , travelers should stock the carrier with plenty of necessities like water or treats and check in for a flight as late as possible.

American Airlines' Pet Policy Explained

  • American Airlines allows fully trained service animals in the cabin but requires specific forms and fees for emotional support animals.
  • Pets can travel in the cabin on certain flights but must meet weight and carrier size restrictions and remain in the carrier for the duration of the flight.
  • Pets traveling as cargo must be in IATA-approved crates, adhere to weight restrictions, and cannot be exposed to extreme temperatures. Certain dog and cat breeds are not allowed to travel as cargo.

If you own a dog or cat, consider taking it with you when traveling. While this can be complicated and often quite expensive, it can be a better option than sticking it in a kennel or pet boarding facility while you are away.

Flying with your pet for the first time can be stressful for both you and the animal. With each airline seeming to have its own set of rules, many things must be considered. With this in mind, we will look at the world's largest airline, American Airlines, and see their policies regarding flying with your pet.

Service animals

While fully trained service animals can travel in the cabin on American Airlines flights, certain conditions exist. The service animal must be fully trained to aid and assist a disabled traveler. Service animals in training and emotional support animals may travel as pets but must meet all requirements and applicable fees.

In 2019, American Airlines revised its emotional support animal guidelines and now requires a medical health form from a doctor and a veterinary health form with proof that the animal is current with all vaccinations. The form must be submitted to American Airlines at least 48 hours before traveling, and the animal must be checked in with the passenger at an American Airlines ticket counter.

Traveling together with your pet in the cabin

While American Airlines accepts pets in the cabin on flights within the 48 contiguous United States, Alaska, Central America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, and St. Thomas, all other destinations require that your pet travel as cargo in the aircraft hold.

For the animal to travel with you in the cabin, it needs to be at least eight weeks old and not weigh more than a combined pet and carrier weight of 20 lbs. American Airlines requires soft-sided carriers with a waterproof bottom that does not exceed the following dimensions:

  • Length = 18 inches
  • Width = 11 inches
  • Height = 11 inches

The pet must be placed under the seat in front of you and remain in the carrier for the flight duration. Passengers flying with pets in the cabin cannot sit in exit row seats. American Airlines charges $125 per carry-on pet and limits the number of pets on each flight.

Traveling with a pet in cargo

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has a set of standards to ensure the welfare of animals that all airlines must adhere to. All dogs and cats must travel in rigid, well-vented, leak-proof, secure IATA-approved travel crates. The crates must be large enough for the animal to stand up, turn around, and lie comfortably.

American Airlines has a dedicated American PetEmbark program for transporting live animals in cargo . To be able to fly with your pet in the cargo hold of the aircraft, the combined weight of the travel crate and pet cannot exceed 100 lbs (45 kilos).

The crate must be ventilated on three sides for domestic travel and four for international travel. It also requires a secure locking door from which the animal cannot escape. The secure ventilated door is required to hold food and water containers that can be refilled from outside the crate with enough supplies to last 24 hours.

Your Stress-Free Guide To Traveling With Furry Friends

American airlines pet travel restrictions.

American Airlines Cargo has dedicated heated and air-conditioned holding areas to ensure that your pet is not exposed to extreme heat or cold. Your pet cannot travel in the hold of an aircraft if the current weather or forecasted weather exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.4 degrees Celcius) at the departure or destination airport. Likewise, the same applies to cold weather when the temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7.2 degrees Celcius). Some exceptions are made if you can provide a letter from your vet saying that the animal can travel in colder or hotter weather.

What animals cannot travel as cargo

Like nearly all airlines, American Airlines refuses to transport. Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs of any mix and includes all Boxers, Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Pugs, Pit bulls, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Cats not permitted to fly cargo are Burmese, Persian, Himalayan, and any Exotic Shorthair breeds.

Cost and fees

The price of flying with your pet depends upon the starting point and destination. If flying internationally , you must fill out additional forms that your vet can supply. All animals traveling overseas need to be fitted with a destination-compliant microchip. Once your vet completes the form, it must be certified by a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) accredited veterinarian. Depending on where you live, you may need to drive to an area where they breed animals, such as horse farms.

Traveling with your pet can be complicated, and you need to organize weeks before your flight.

We want to make sure your pet has a safe and smooth journey, so please make sure your pet's health certificate includes all this required information:

  • Your pet's breed, weight and date of birth or age
  • If the words "mix" or "mixed" are used to describe the pet, then the predominant breed must be referenced
  • Animals must also be 8 weeks old in order to travel
  • Statement that your pet was examined by a veterinarian stating that your pet was found to be free of infectious or contagious diseases that might put your pet, other animals or public health at risk. This should also confirm that your pet appears to be healthy enough for travel.
  • Your pet's pretravel exam and health certificate must be dated within 10 days of travel to be accepted
  • An English translation of the health certificate if your pet is traveling internationally before or after traveling with American

Electronic health certificate

Electronic health certificates are acceptable with a certificate number and a proper license. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Pet Travel website has information about which countries will accept electronic certificates, along with other specifics. For example, in the U.S., if shipping domestically using an electronic health certificate, an ink signature is not required. For other countries, an ink signature may be required.

Round-trip flights

For animals traveling round-trip within the U.S., the original health certificate may be used for the return journey providing the return occurs within 10 days of the date the certificate was first issued. Otherwise, a new health certificate will be required for the return journey. Some countries’ health certificates have time frame requirements of less than 10 days, so be sure to check the country’s guidelines if your pet is traveling internationally.

Pregnant animals and health certificates

Please ensure the licensed veterinarian clarifies that the animal is fit to travel and there is no risk of birth occurring during the entire journey. If the health certificate states the animal has given birth, time of tender must be greater than 48 hours post whelping to be accepted for carriage. Females with suckling young and un-weaned animals will not be accepted for carriage. Animals must be 8 weeks old in order to travel.

Other Animals

For all other types of animals, consult the website of the destination country for specific requirements. The IATA shipper's certification is required for U.S. outbound international or interline transfer shipments. Also, please read the IATA shipper's instructions and responsibilities .

International Travel

With the exception of the Caribbean and Central America, we require that international pet transport requests originating outside the U.S.be handled by an IATA-regulated freight forwarder or professional pet shipper with an American Airlines Cargo PAL and billing account.

This requirement does not apply to anyone shipping internationally from the U.S., but we do recommend using a professional pet shipper to ensure a smooth process. IPATA professionals specialize in pet travel preparation and procuring your required documents, including health certificates, import/export permits and paperwork for freight forwarders and customs brokers. IPATA members also work closely with you to focus on your pet's well-being.

Here are some important things you should know when planning international pet travel:

For animals being transported to an international destination, visit the USDA-APHIS Pet Travel site for your destination country's documentation requirements. These requirements can include vaccinations, testing and arranging for import permits — which can take weeks or months to complete prior to travel. We recommend starting this process as soon as you know your destination.

If you don't comply with all the destination country's requirements, you risk the animal being refused transport, being subject to quarantine or being returned to the United States at your expense. Contact the USDA-APHIS Customer Service Call Center at 844 820 2234 or visit the USDA-APHIS Pet Travel site for import requirements.

For animals being transported internationally to the EU, the APHIS Form 7001 is not required for entry when a valid USDA endorsed health certificate is presented.

For animals being transported internationally, the International shippers certificate must be completed. Lab mice and rats do not require a health certificate, shipper's certificate or acclimation letter unless otherwise specified by the state or country of destination.

For exotic animals, visit the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service to determine whether your pet's species is listed under domestic and international law, and whether you need a permit.

The embassy or consulate in your pet’s destination country can give you details to make sure you follow all the country-specific entry procedures.

You or your pet shipper are responsible for making sure that all destination specific pet entry requirements are met, including state, county or city regulations. Make sure you and your shipper discuss customs clearance and/or freight forwarder needs, so you’re clear on the process in advance, and so your pet doesn’t get delayed during travel.

Certain breeds and animal species are not allowed into some countries.

We strongly recommend that you discuss your pet's travel plans with a veterinarian well before their travel, to make sure your pet meets all the import regulations and is ready for travel.

Need help clearing customs into the U.S.? We can help

We have partnered with Coppersmith Global Logistics to assist your pet in clearing customs in the U.S. Coppersmith works under power of attorney to arrange for the clearance of your pet through the U.S. governmental regulatory agencies. Coppersmith will work closely with the importer to ensure all information is correct and complete prior to loading. Then, they will electronically file for release before your pet even arrives in the United States.

Let either your sales representative or your pet transport professional know you're interested in using Coppersmith to make your pet's international travel experience as smooth as possible.

American Airlines changes pet policy, allows passengers to bring carry-on with pet carrier

international pet travel american airlines

Good news for pet owners! American Airlines is relaxing its pet policy and allowing those who travel with their animal companions to bring a full-size carry-on too, along with the pet carrier.

"On flights with American you can bring one pet carrier as a carry-on if: You pay the carry-on pet fee; Your pet stays in the pet carrier and under the seat in front of you the entire flight," says American Airline's on their website , adding that passengers can also bring "one additional item on board with your pet," which can be a personal item like a purse or small handbag or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin and meets the airline's requirements .

"Remember, you can only bring one with your pet carrier, not both," says American.

Earlier, travelers with pets were only allowed to bring a small personal item, that could fit under the seat if they were bringing their pet onboard. Anything bigger than that, like a carry-on, was required to be checked for $35. Alternatively, pet owners could put their pet in the cargo hold if they wanted to bring a bigger item with them on the flight.

However, there has been no change in fees required to bring a pet onboard. That remains fixed at $150, as per the American Airline's website. Meanwhile, pet strollers are still required to be checked in and all checked bag fees apply.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment and what prompted the relaxation in policy.

Flying with a dog? Here’s how to ensure a smooth flight for your pet

Traveling with pets

Even with the relaxation in policy, experts advise thoughtful planning and research before traveling with pets and considering factors such as choosing a pet-friendly airline, insurance and preparing your pet for the journey ahead of time.

Every airline has its own guidelines for traveling with pets and the websites for domestic carriers like Southwest , JetBlue , American , Alaska , United and Delta each spell out what pets can travel where and the requirements for a carrier that can fit under the seat.

There are limitations on the number of pets a passenger can travel with on different aircrafts and travelers are advised to go through the airline policies before making their travel plans and booking tickets.

Similarly, country-based restrictions also apply, and travelers are advised to understand pet-entry requirements for their destination county when traveling abroad.

A big airline is relaxing its pet policy to let owners bring the companion and a rolling carry-on

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — American Airlines is relaxing part of its pet policy to let owners bring their companion and a full-size carry-on bag into the cabin.

Until this week, people who carried a pet into the cabin — which involves paying a $150 fee — could only have one other small item that fit under the seat.

Anything bigger, like a carry-on bag with wheels, needed to be checked — for a $35 fee. Or they could put the pet in the cargo hold.

Now American is letting passengers bring a pet in the cabin and also bring a regular carry-on bag or a personal item — just not both bags.

The old policy struck some pet owners as unfair, since they were already paying a pet fee.

Gary Leff, a travel blogger who first wrote about the change, recalled traveling years ago with a Yorkshire terrier.

“It was always frustrating that the dog counted as the carry-on even though I was paying the extra (pet) fee that was sometimes more than the ticket for me,” he said Friday.

Leff said he thinks American’s change will reduce the urge for travelers to falsely claim that their pet is a service animal that flies for free.

An American spokeswoman confirmed that the rules change took effect Thursday.

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” she said.
