The rock band Chicago: front (L-R) Lee Loughnane, Robert Lamm, James Pankow; back (L-R) Neil Donell, ... [+] Eric Baines, Ramon Yslas, Tony Obrohta, Ray Herrmann, Loren Gold, Walfredo Reyes Jr.
In November of last year, the veteran rock band Chicago performed a special show at Atlantic City’s Ocean Casino Resort that featured guest appearances by Steve Vai, Robert Randolph, Chris Daughtry, Judith Hill, VoicePlay, Robin Thicke and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. For Chicago trumpeter and original member Lee Loughnane, the show marked a rare occasion of the band collaborating with multiple artists onstage.
“It was great to work with all the guest artists,” he says recently. “We don't have anybody sit in with us on a normal basis. And maybe if we do, it's like one person or something like that. But to have seven was challenging and very interesting to work with each one, and see how they brought their expertise to work with us and how they were able to give us their interpretation of our music. It was very cool watching it happen.”
The experience in Atlantic City was also filmed and is now being presented as Chicago & Friends in Concert , which will be screened in theaters this Thursday, April 18, and Sunday, April 21 (the film will be available in a variety of commercial formats in the future). A collaboration between the band, Fan Tracks, Iconic Events and Mercury Studios, Chicago & Friends in Concert features Chicago – led by co-founders Loughnane, trombonist James Pankow and keyboardist/singer Robert Lamm – playing over two hours of classic hits including “Saturday in the Park,” “25 or 6 to 4,” “Old Days, “If You Leave Me Now,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” and You’re the Inspiration.”
Loughnane felt that the special guest artists brought something new to the time-tested Chicago material as captured in the new film, which was executive produced by Decades Rock Live! series creator Barry Summers. “I think they had a great time too,” Loughnane says of the artists. “Talking to them backstage and then performing with them, you could see that they were enjoying what they were doing.”

For his appearance, Thicke sang lead on two Chicago songs, including “Call on Me” (from 1974’s Chicago VII album) that Loughnane wrote. “I think he did a great job,” Loughnane says. “And interestingly enough, he's singing it in a little more falsetto, which you're not used to hearing. I think it added something different to the song that was very emotionally pleasing.”

Another highlight from the shows was the vocal group VoicePlay performing such Chicago songs as “Look Away,” “If You Leave Me Now” and “Happy Man” with the band in an semi-acoustic setting. “At various times, we do an unplugged segment ourselves on stage just to sort of break it up,” Loughnane says. “It was great to hear how they approached our songs and how we were able to blend the two bands together.”
Meanwhile, Chicago will be marking another year of summer touring as they join forces with Earth, Wind and Fire again on the Heart and Soul tour beginning July 10 in Missouri. Says Loughnane: “We can't wait for it. We're going to rehearse a couple of days with Earth, Wind and Fire, and then do about 30 shows with them. We've always played the encore at the end, where we do a half-hour’s worth of music, three of their songs and three of our songs, and everybody plays. It's really cool.”
The new film and the upcoming summer tour with EWF come as Chicago marks the 55th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album, The Chicago Transit Authority , which featured the original band lineup of Loughnane, Lamm, Pankow, guitarist Terry Kath saxophonist Walt Parazaider, drummer Danny Seraphine and bassist Peter Cetera. A good number of that album’s tracks were performed during the group’s Atlantic City appearance last year, including the deep cuts “Poem 58,” “South California Purples” and “Listen” for the first time in many years.
“We hadn't played them since we had enough hits…and people wanted to hear our current hits,” Loughnane says. “So as we amassed more hits and live performances, we weren't able to do the deeper cuts anymore because people would actually complain. Not that we weren't playing things that they would enjoy hearing, but they wanted to hear the hits even over the deeper cuts.”
Recorded in New York City with producer James William Guercio, The Chicago Transit Authority ( which was also Chicago’s original name) was an ambitious double album of jazz rock, progressive rock and pop. Upon its initial release, the record’s singles didn’t become immediate hits.
“Interestingly enough, AM radio wasn't ready for it either because when we initially released “Beginnings” and “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,” they didn't want to play it,” Loughnane recalls. “Top 40 didn't want to play it because they said we hadn't had a hit yet. So that was the excuse, the catch-22 type thing. But obviously, how are you going to have a hit if you don't play it?”
But interest in the songs from The Chicago Transit Authority was revived when the band’s second album, 1970’s Chicago (a.k.a. Chicago II ), became a success and generated hits with “Make Me Smile,” “Colour My World” and “25 or 6 to 4.” “And then we went back and re-released the songs off of the first album,” Loughnane says, “So it worked for us in retrospect.
“The thing that was the most bizarre was the way the press acted toward it,” he continues, “because they put the first album as ‘groundbreaking,’ ‘way ahead of our time’ and all of that stuff. And then when we went back and re-released the songs [from The Chicago Transit Authority ] and they became hits, the same people started saying that we had sold out because the songs were hits. We hadn't changed one note on any of those songs. I think it told us that we should concentrate on what we're doing on our music, try to keep all of the other noise away from us, and just do what we enjoy doing.”
Not only did that debut album highlight the horns and Lamm’s songwriting but it also showcased the electrifying guitar work of Kath, who died in 1978. “Terry is greatly overlooked as far as the greatest guitar players of all time in pop music. And he got overlooked because, I think, unfortunately, the horns got more notoriety than the guitar. People who listen to it now go, ‘Oh, my God. Who is this guitar player?’ And he's getting more applause for what he did. He left us way, way too soon. But finally, he's getting some recognition.”
On The Chicago Transit Authority ’s legacy, Loughnane ranks it up there alongside other Chicago albums such as II , III , VII , 16 and 17 . Coincidentally, Chicago 17 is marking a special anniversary by turning 40 this year–it remains the group’s best-selling studio album with the hits “You’re the Inspiration.” “Hard Habit to Break,” “Stay the Night” and “Along Comes a Woman.”
“It definitely [a turning point] was because David Foster came in as a producer and he focused in on the tenor voice in the band,” Loughnane says of 17 . “ And he focused in on using the horns as more of an effect than you know really doing full-on brass arrangements like we had in the past. So me, Jimmy and Walt picked up other instruments and were able to get better at other instruments during that period. It was a pretty interesting time for us, but in no way did we think we were ever going to stop playing horns. If someone was attempting to get us out of the band, we weren't going to go without a problem.”
The combined success of Chicago 16 and Chicago 17 connected the band to the MTV generation after their commercial fortunes dwindled during the late ‘70s. “ 16 and 17 became like a second wave of success for us where people saw our 16th and 17th album [and] they thought those were the first and second [Chicago] albums. They were growing up during that period. And so they would say, ‘Mom and Dad, look at this!’ And then Mom and Dad would go get the albums from I to XV and say, ‘You mean these guys?’”
As for the future, Loughnane says the band is writing new music though but has no plans at the moment to put it on an album (the group’s last studio record was 2022’s Chicago XXXVIII: Born for This Moment ). Fifty-seven years into Chicago’s existence, Loughnane could have never imagined the band would endure this long amid changing trends and lineup changes (in addition to Loughnane, Lamm and Pankow, the current band configuration features singer Neil Donell, drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr, bassist Eric Baines, guitarist Tony Obrohta, keyboardist Loren Gold, percussionist Ramon Yslas and saxophonist Ray Herrmann).
“I am ecstatic that we're still able to do this for a living, says Loughnane, adding, “I would have thought we're lucky if we get one album and maybe two. That's the way we were thinking back then. There's no way to look you know this far ahead and have any idea that you would be able to do this at this level, especially.”
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, Chicago still garners airplay and concertgoers. The group has also generated admiration from musicians of different generations as indicated by the diverse guests on Chicago & Friends in Concert . “It's very gratifying to see that they have not only respect for their music, but we have influenced their music in some way and they felt honored to be able to come and share that with us,” says Loughnane.
‘Chicago & Friends in Concert’ will be in theaters on Thursday, April 18, and Sunday, April 21. For information on venues and showtimes, visit chicagoandfriendsintheatres.com .

Stephen Colbert to move 'Late Show' to Chicago for Democratic convention
The cbs fixture will be based at the auditorium theatre from august 19 to 22..
Stephen Colbert announces his Chicago plans on Wednesday’s episode of “The Late Show.”
Stephen Colbert is taking his “Late Show” out of its storied New York theater for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, and Chicago is where he’ll be going.
The host will announce on Wednesday’s episode that during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, he’ll be making his August 19-22 episodes at the Auditorium Theatre, 50 East Ida B. Wells Drive.
“I lived in Chicago for 11 years, and it holds a special place in my heart, and not just because of all the Polish sausage that’s still lodged in my aorta,” he says on the show, taped earlier Wednesday. “Chicago is where I cut my comedy teeth performing at The Second City, and it’s also where this South Carolina boy got an education in winter. Did you know that tears can freeze?”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Late Show (@colbertlateshow)
Audience tickets for the shows are not yet available.
It will be the first full-on production of “The Late Show” in another city, although during the pandemic, Colbert did bare-bones broadcasts from his homes in New Jersey and South Carolina.
- Stephen and Evie McGee Colbert collaborate on cookbook
The politically minded comedian is relocating for only one of this summer’s nominating conventions. During the Republican event in Milwaukee, Colbert will stay at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater and broadcast his show live. As of now, live broadcasts are not planned in Chicago, but that is subject to change.
Colbert grew up in South Carolina but became a Midwesterner first to study at Northwestern University , and then as an aspiring actor at various Chicago theaters. He emerged as a standout writer-performer at Second City and remains active with the theater, serving on its board of directors.

Jake Lockett's "Cozy" Chicago Fire Trailer Has an Actual Fireplace (VIDEO)
It's chilly in the Windy City!
The fact that Chicago Fire actually shoots in Chicago, Illinois gives the show so much heart and realism. It also means that the set can get really, really cold.
How to Watch
Watch Chicago Fire Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and next day on Peacock .
Luckily, Jake Lockett, who plays firefighter Sam Carver on the hit drama, can keep warm in his trailer, which comes equipped with the kind of fire he doesn't have to put out. He revealed this and more in a tour video, which you can see below.
Take a peek inside Jake Lockett's Chicago Fire trailer
" There’s no new episode of #chicagofire this week again - come hang out with me in my trailer instead," Lockett wrote on Instagram, offering fans the full behind-the-scenes experience. In the video, Lockett shows off the small closet for his daily costumes (which are... all the same ), the "warming jacket" he and other actors put on between takes, his small, private bathroom, a lighted mirror station and a few golf clubs in case he gets bored.
Most of the room is taken up by a couch with a "Mouch's Spot" pillow, from which the actor can watch TV in front of an electric fireplace. As he says, it's "cozy," and the perfect place to lay down for a nap. It's a simple but well-appointed trailer, and that's really all you need.

Lockett's behind the scenes videos are everything
The actor is committed to giving fans new content every week, so if there isn't a new episode airing, he takes it upon himself to upload something for them to enjoy. And boy, do we.
A week before the trailer tour, Lockett blessed Chicago Fire fans with a compilation of BTS moments featuring the cast goofing off. One commenter wrote, "Thank you Jake for this i really missed you guys last night," and another added, "THIS BEHIND THE SCENE CONTENT ITS BECOMING MY OBSESSION." Exactly.

Jake Lockett is also a talented musician
In addition to his acting and his budding documentarian skills, Lockett is a singer and guitar player. He played "Ain't No Sunshine" at a Los Angeles open mic night, and his raspy voice combined with an acoustic guitar were a perfect match for the song. It was downright sultry.

Chicago Sky ticket sales soar after WNBA draft: ‘These women are worth the money’
T icket sales for the Chicago Sky are soaring after the team selected three star players in the WNBA draft Monday, the latest surge of support for women’s basketball nationwide.
With the No. 3 and No. 7 picks, the Sky added South Carolina center Kamilla Cardoso and LSU forward Angel Reese to its roster. In the second round, the Sky selected Gonzaga guard Brynna Maxwell with the 13th pick.
“If you’re not going to a Sky game this year, I don’t know what you’re doing,” said Karli Bell, the Chicago Sky reporter for Marquee Sports Network. “This is going to be that new generation that’s going to bring in those fans.”
With an increase of televised games, as well as the addition of the “March Madness” trademark to the women’s college bracket in 2022, the historically overlooked sport has seen a renaissance in recent years. This year, ratings for the NCAA women’s title game topped the men’s championship, with an average of 18.7 million viewers.
Many have dubbed the phenomena the “Caitlin Clark effect. ” Clark, a former guard for the University of Iowa, was this year’s No. 1 pick. Tickets for a June 23 game between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever — the team that drafted Clark — are nearly sold out on Ticketmaster, with prices as high as $1,700. The cheapest tickets are $225.
“There has definitely been an increase in ticket sales throughout the year that coincides with the tremendous amount of talent coming out of the NCAA and into the WNBA this upcoming season,” Anthony Whaley, Sky vice president of ticket sales, said in a statement. “Fans are wanting to watch more women’s basketball and the growth in our ticket sales has reflected that.”
Column: For Chicago Sky fans, tomorrow is here with draft picks Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese
Other popular games this season include the May 25 home opener against Connecticut Sun, as well as match-ups with the Los Angeles Sparks, Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty, according to Whaley.
Season ticket purchases are also dramatically increasing. Among those season ticket holders? Lori Lightfoot. The former mayor and her wife have had season tickets since the launch of the Chicago Sky franchise in 2006. Lightfoot attended the team’s official draft watch party Monday night.
“Women’s basketball has been a thing of beauty and excitement for decades, and so as a long time fan, I could not be more thrilled that a much broader audience is discovering the incredibly talented athletes who keep pushing this sport to higher heights,” Lightfoot said in a statement. “Chicago is a big sports town and we join Sky fans who are very excited to see these three new draft picks in action.”
The decisions surrounding the Sky’s draft picks were rooted in business as much as basketball, according to Bell. The players, who have large social media followings, will help cultivate a generational fan base. Though most female basketball players peak from ages 25 to 29, all three rookies are expected to see significant playing time this season, she added.
“What the Sky did, instead of building a team to win now, they started the development for later,” Bell said. “From a business standpoint, they’ll capitalize on it. Everyone wants to see Angel.”
Belmont Cragin resident Alena Scarver, 40, has been following the Sky for about a decade. She usually attends three or four games a season, but prices have already begun to rise after Monday’s draft.
“I was like, ‘Oh man, this kind of hits the pockets a little bit,’” Scarver said. “But overall, I’m happy about it, because I’ve always felt that the women’s professional game never really got the attention that it deserved.”

In past seasons, Scarver never had to pay more than $75 per seat. Still, it will be worth it to watch the revamped team chemistry when they step on the court, she said.
“These women are worth the money and worth the respect,” Scarver said. “I mean, we pay just as much for Bears tickets, for Bulls tickets.”
Jerseys for the Sky’s newest additions will be available in select Dick’s Sporting Goods stores across the Chicago area when the regular season kicks off in late May, a company spokesperson said.
Detroit native Biba Adams has never attended a Chicago Sky game. This year, the 44-year-old hopes to drive into the city with her best friend to watch. She was captivate by Clark, Reese and other players during the recent NCAA tournament.
“I really think that this could be a new era of people being excited about women’s basketball, which, obviously, should raise ticket prices, raise salaries,” Adams said. “I think this season will be sensational.”

Colbert said he lived in Chicago for 11 years “and it holds a special place in my heart,” noting it wasn’t “just because of all the Polish sausage that’s still lodged in my aorta.”
“Chicago is where I cut my comedy teeth performing at the Second City. That’s also where this South Carolina boy got an education in winter,” he said. “Did you know that tears can freeze? I didn’t know that before I lived there. You gotta keep blinking.”
The 2024 Democratic National Convention is where the delegates of the United States Democratic Party will select the party’s nominees for president and vice president for this year’s presidential election. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the presumptive nominees and will take the stage at the United Center in Chicago during the week of August 19.
