Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Do I need a visa to travel to United States?
It depends on where you’re from. Many countries now operate under the United States Visa Waiver Program, meaning a visa isn’t required for stays of up to 90 days for travel purposes. There are 40 participating countries, including the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand, Germany and Spain.
If you're eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain a letter of authorization before you travel to the States. This can be obtained by submitting an application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ).
If you’re a national from a non-participating country of the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a non-immigrant visa. Please see the Department of State website for more information.
If you have traveled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on or after 1 March 2011, you are ineligible and must apply for a non-immigrant visa instead.
People from a participating country who are also citizens of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan must also apply for a non-immigrant visa.

Is tipping customary in the US?
Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.
People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.
In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.
What is the internet access like in the US?
Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.
Can I use my cell phone while in the US?
Cell phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.
What is ATM access like in the US?
ATMs are common in the US, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.
Does my trip to the United States support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to the United States directly support our foundation partners, Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance (CHEA) and the Grand Canyon Conservancy.
Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance (CHEA)
Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance (CHEA) create inclusive, equitable opportunities for small Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) tourism businesses in the USA. Donations help CHEA provide access to industry-specific technical assistance, capacity building, and industry networks for small BIPOC travel and tourism businesses through their Diversity Tourism Academy (DTA). Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
Find out more or make a donation
The Grand Canyon Conservancy
The Grand Canyon Conservancy is on a mission to protect the Grand Canyon National Park for future generations. With almost 6 million visitors to the park annually, the Grand Canyon Conservancy runs educational programs and immersive experiences that teach people about the park's cultural and environmental significance. Donations support trail restoration and maintenance, conservation and preservation of native vegetation and wildlife, and educational programs. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?
We are committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.
We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

10 Scenic Train Journeys To Take From San Francisco
You don't have to have a car to experience the beauty of the West Coast's cities and nature destinations. Here are our favorite train trips from San Francisco.
No car? No problem! Lucky for us, the SF Bay Area is a great starting point for some of the most scenic journeys on the West Coast, at an even more affordable price thanks to Amtrak’s California Rail Pass . Whether you’re in for a long-haul voyage across the state, or you’re seeking out an easy nearby escape , here are some of the best train trips from San Francisco (or near San Francisco). Keep in mind that Amtrak routes leave out of Emeryville , so you’ll need to take BART across the Bay or a connecting Amtrak bus to get there.
We love to experience the city’s car-free transportation options , and there are many… consider reading our guide to car-free transport in SF and boat trips you can take from the Ferry Building for more inspiration.
1. Palo Alto
Caltrain will take you from San Francisco right to the heart of Downtown Palo Alto in under an hour. This puts you in a great position to visit the Stanford University campus , Stanford Shopping Center, and Arboretum Grove. The Palo Alto station is also near some of the Bay’s most popular restaurants including Ramen Nagi, Ettan, BIRD DOG, and Nobu . If you’re willing to go a bit out of the way, consider visiting the historic Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden , which is about a 25-minute walk or bus ride.
🚂 Take Caltrain B7, L3, or L4 from San Francisco Station to Palo Alto Station
2. San Jose
Caltrain will drop you off at the San Jose Diridon station right next to the Shark Tank (SAP Center), which is in spitting distance of some gems in Downtown San Jose. See what Broadway shows are playing at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, visit The Tech Interactive, or spend an afternoon playing arcade games at Miniboss. If you head the other direction towards Fruitvale, you can check out the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum (next to “America’s best rose garden,” which blooms in May).
🚂 Take Caltrain B7, L3, or L4 from San Francisco Station to San Jose Diridon Station
Davis is a fun and vibrant college town that’s easily bikeable and walkable, making it a good place to visit via train from San Francisco. This is the “ Bicycle Capital of America ,” so consider renting some wheels and get ready to explore the ample parks and greenbelts throughout the city. Pick up some delicious local produce at the Davis Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, or wolf down a massive hamburger at the crowd-favorite Burgers and Brew restaurant.
🚂 Take Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor or California Zephyr from Emeryville to Davis
4. Sacramento
California’s state capitol can make for an interesting weekend train trip from San Francisco. Amtrak will take you to the Sacramento Valley Station right near the Old Sacramento Waterfront , which is an underrated piece of California Gold Rush history . Take a boat cruise down the river, order an oversize cocktail at Joe’s Crab Shack, or take a ride on Waterfront Park’s 65-foot Ferris wheel. If you’re hoping to get a glimpse of the Capitol Building or visit the accompanying museum, it’s a quick bus ride or a 25-minute walk.
🚂 Take Amtrak’s California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, or Capitol Corridor train from Emeryville to Sacramento Valley Station
Discover Downtown Chico’s street festivals, historic museums, live music, and great food and drink. Craft beer lovers will want to take a tour of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. , which many consider to be the origin of the craft beer movement. The Downtown area has some eclectic hidden gems to explore, including the National Yo-Yo Museum, the Bidwell Mansion , and of course endless artisanal beer establishments.
🚂 Take Amtrak’s Coast Starlight train from Emeryville to Chico Station
Truckee is a picturesque mountain town well-located for visiting Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe National Forest, and Donner Memorial State Park. The Amtrak stop is right on Donner Pass Road, where you’ll find a charming combination of mom ‘n’ pop shops, elegant restaurants, and historic brick buildings dating back to the California Gold Rush. Whether you visit in the winter for a ski weekend or in the summer for a lake day , Truckee is a great destination for adventure seekers.
🚂 Take Amtrak’s California Zephyr from Emeryville to Truckee
7. Los Angeles
Did you know you that there’s a train from L.A. to San Francisco? Amtrak’s Coast Starlight runs through both Emeryville and L.A.’s Union Station , so it’s a good route to keep an eye on if you make frequent trips between NorCal and SoCal. From Union Station you can hop on the Metrolink to reach essential neighborhoods including Long Beach, Anaheim, Hollywood, and Pasadena.
🚂 Take Amtrak’s Coast Starlight from Emeryville to Los Angeles Union Station
8. San Diego
Once you get into SoCal via the Amtrak Coast Starlight, you can transfer to the Pacific Surfliner , which takes passengers along the California coast between San Luis Obispo and San Diego. It makes a stop in Old Town San Diego , which is the first European settlement in California; and the Santa Fe Depot , which is in the heart of downtown.
🚂 Take Amtrak’s Coast Starlight from Emeryville, and switch to Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner at one of the shared stops (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Van Nuys, Burbank, or LA’s Union Station).
9. Yosemite
Although Amtrak trains won’t technically take you all the way to Yosemite National Park, they have a route from Emeryville to Merced that leads to an Amtrak bus going straight to Yosemite Valley. When you buy these tickets through Amtrak, the price of the Yosemite park shuttle and park admission are also included. The Yosemite Valley stop is well-located to the Yosemite Falls trailhead, the Yosemite Valley Lodge, and the welcome center. See if you can time your visit for the elusive Firefall or night rainbows.
🚂 Take Amtrak’s San Joaquins train from Emeryville to Merced and transfer to Amtrak Thruway Bus (Route 15) to Yosemite Valley
10. Seattle
Amtrak’s Coast Starlight train route goes all the way from Seattle to Los Angeles and passes right through Emeryville. This is one of the most beautiful train journeys you can take on the West Coast, with stunning views of the Cascade Range, Mount Shasta, and raw coastal cliffs. The Seattle stop is at King Street Station right near Lumen Field and downtown Seattle, so you’re well-connected to access some of the city’s best attractions via public transportation. Other nearby stops on the route include Portland, Klamath Falls, and Tacoma.

Hiking in Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park is breathtaking. As I walked along the hikes that we went on, many times I did not know which direction to look since there was so much natural beauty.

Hiking in Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada
The tour plan with its walks, chosen sights ie places to hike & visit, and lodging is excellent. It was a tight schedule without pressure offering A LOT of impressions and beauty. A great o really plan. I would have enjoyed a bit more history & information about the different sights. While many travelers enjoy a more laid back experience of look-see-go, I am the type who enjoys more when I am given something to focus on when I land somewhere new. I prefer a guide who is ready to offer good and intriguing information which was missing for me in my group.

Yosemite & Tahoe Sierras - 4 Days
We had a fantastic experience during our four day tour! Our tour guide and driver Lisa made sure everyone got to see and experience as much as we possibly could of Yosemite, Tahoe and the Sierra Nevadas. Every day was jam packed full of options for hiking, sightseeing, swimming in pristine lakes and hot springs and exploring everything from ghost towns to restaurants. Lisa kept us informed and on track, and made adjustments to the schedule if necessary. Thank you to Tour Radar, Incredible Adventures, Lisa and all the crew on the tour with us!!

Yosemite Escape Camping - 3 Days
I went to visit the west coast for a few weeks from Ireland and took in lots of different tours and trips. This tour was by far the highlight of my trip. The scenery was amazing obviously but the way we wrre guided by Kate was right up there. She was so considerate, knowledgeable and patient. Also so much fun, she really made the tour for me. Such a cool girl. Have mentioned inca specially to all my friends living in SF because of how much better the trip was due to Kate.

What people love about california tours from san francisco.
Yosemite tour was amazing. Choice of lodging needed to be different. Too far out of the way which caused a lot of extra driving. A hotel which was previously used would have been better. And virtually no response to questions thru the Tour Radar app. Had to take care of extra nights stays & transportation myself when the app stated that they would assist with it.
The trip was well coordinated. Our trip had to be re-routed due to the very snowy winter, but our tour guide, Phil, still managed to keep our days full, and our hikes about the same mileage that we would have walked otherwise. The hikes were moderate to steep, nothing that our entire group could not keep up with. I felt that everyone was accommodated to. And we went to our rooms at night exhausted from our days journey. Yosemite is a must-do, if you have never been there. The pictures do it no justice. Having the tour guide from intrepid was great, because he told us all about the history of the National Park- things that I would have walked right by if I were hiking alone. This trip was great! can’t wait until the next one.
It was great. Tough schedule but I liked it.
