Beers of the SEC: From Druid City to Jackalope Brewing, a guide for your college football road trips

Beers of the SEC: From Druid City to Jackalope Brewing, a guide for your college football road trips

Starting this fall, fans once again will descend upon college campuses to watch their favorite schools play sports. Many of those fans will need cold refreshments while they’re in town. And that’s where  The Athletic ’s expert staff comes in.

We’re well equipped to tell you what happens in the games … and also where to grab a beer before and after they’re played.

Presenting:  The Athletic ’s College Town Brewery Tours.

We’ve highlighted a brewery for each school in each power conference, as well as select Group of Five and independent programs. We aimed for spots within town lines or as close as possible and, when we could, sought a beverage recommendation from the breweries themselves. We also added “notable” locals, if you’re inclined to make more than one stop.

As this isn’t exactly a scientific exercise, feel free to offer your recommendations in the comments. You can’t go wrong with more ways to have good beer. With that, let the tour begin!

Previously: Big 12 | Group of 5/Independents

Druid City Brewing Company

The school with the indomitable football machine doesn’t quite yet have a booming craft beer scene to match. To be clear: Druid City has high-quality offerings and is more than worth your while. And when the taproom is walking distance from Bryant-Denny Stadium, the Bear Bryant statue and Coleman Coliseum, you can be the epicenter of beverage gathering efforts anyway. (Seriously, Druid City is pretty much across the street from Coleman.) It’s a simple six-beer selection at last check. So it’s not entirely out of the question to fix yourself up with the Downtown North Porter, described as a “full-bodied malt bomb,” before proceeding to the well-regarded Lamplighter IPA. Still waiting for someone to dare brew a Rat Poison gose, but we can also understand why that might be a tough marketing sell.

Notables: Black Warrior

Fossil Cove Brewing Company

So we don’t know how our readers roll, but a brewery that opens at 7 a.m. is all right in our book. Granted, at that hour, you might be more inclined to partake in the coffee (and espresso service until 2 p.m). But who are we to judge? As for the beer offerings, Fossil Cove describes its T-Rex Tripel as a “cult favorite,” but you might want to wait until the afternoon or evening hours before taking on an 8 percent ABV beverage. Fossil Cove marketing director Andrew Blann deems the La Brea brown ale — a Belgian-style brown brewed with a touch of coriander — the most versatile choice. “The La Brea Brown has become a cult classic in Fayetteville with dedicated fans from newly initiated craft beer lovers to seasoned diehards,” Blann says. “It’s balanced, with hints of citrus, chocolate and a pleasant malty finish that makes it a perfect choice for fall tailgating, game-day barbecues and calling the Hogs.” But you also don’t have to stop there. In fact, several breweries not far from the Arkansas campus line up very nicely for a long day’s pilgrimage from one to the next.

Notables: Crisis, West Mountain, Columbus House, Boston Mountain, Apple Blossom

Red Clay Brewing Co. + Resting Pulse Brewing Co. (Opelika)

Although you can find many a craft beer on tap in Auburn … you’re not going to find craft beer taprooms in Auburn. But, you know, sometimes the universe aligns just so. Like across-the-street just so, when you travel nine short miles up the road to Opelika. There’s no sense in recommending one or the other between Red Clay and Resting Pulse; they’re separated by a three-minute walk, door to door. Red Clay serves pizza and lists 12 beers on tap; the Fortuity Sour Lambic has our attention. Resting Pulse has a larger menu (there’s even a Sunday breakfast option), if food is a primary consideration, and we could get into the Opa Liken Lime wheat or the Breathin’ Hazy IPA, depending on our mood and the grub pairing.

Swamp Head Brewery

It may be an older, bigger operation and not quite a niche discovery on your travels, but Swamp Head remains a priority stop for those in town to watch a Gators game. Food trucks will be on hand most weekend nights, so you’re not sacrificing your appetite on a group visit, and the schedule is posted on the brewery’s website. But you came to hear about the beer. We’re of the mind that the temperature and relative humidity can have a pretty strong effect on the proper choice here. If it’s tolerable outside, maybe the Midnight Oil oatmeal coffee stout is your best bet. But if it’s August-or-early-September-in-Florida outside, then maybe it’s proper to go with the Wild Night honey cream ale or the well-known Big Nose IPA.

Notables: Cypress & Grove, Blackadder, First Magnitude, Big Top

Akademia Brewing Company

Lots of big names to choose from in Athens, but we cannot get past Akademia’s operating premise: Avt Bibas Avt Abeas. Translation: Either drink or go away. That, friends, is as fine a mantra as we’ll ever find in our time on this planet. But beyond that, Akademia has a deep beer bench — 19 on tap at last check — and a robust pub fare menu that makes it a perfect stop for total gastronomic satisfaction when you’re in town to watch the Bulldogs. Like, come on. The Cerberus Tripleta Fries are covered in slow-roasted pork shoulder, ham, peppered pastrami red onions and ale cheese. That base alone can last you for ages. And it allows you to have as many Hoprodisiac hazy double dry-hopped IPAs as you care to enjoy. Or take it down a notch with the Sour Syllabus III: County Fair Shake Up lactose kettle sour.

Notables: Terrapin, Southern, Creature Comforts, Normaltown

Country Boy Brewing

This might be bourbon country, but Lexington’s beer scene has really taken off in the past several years. Country Boy — established in 2012 — is one of the brewing pioneers in town, and its cozy taproom allows an easy walk to Rupp Arena and sits less than two miles from Kroger Field. Its Shotgun Wedding brown ale is made with bourbon-soaked vanilla beans, combining the best the Bluegrass has to offer, and comes in at an easy-drinking 5.3 percent ABV. If you’re an adventurous sort who likes a little spice with your suds, try the Nacho Bait, a twist on the flagship Cougar Bait blonde ale with habanero peppers, or the Jalapeño Smoked Porter. The brewery also excels at high-ABV seasonal stouts that will have you shouting, “Thank God I’m a Country Boy!” — Brian Bennett

Notables: West Sixth, Blue Stallion, Pivot, Ethereal, Fusion

Cypress Coast Brewing Co.

A home-brewing hobby for head brewer Caleb Schlamp turned into a full-blown operation that’s churning out some very highly regarded offerings about five miles northeast of LSU’s campus. We are deeply, wildly, profoundly sad to discover the I Love It When You Call Me Big Peppa’ imperial stout is not currently on tap. Still, you have a Welcome to the Black Parade schwarzbier and a Here We Cone Again New England IPA, and any beer that references Whitesnake’s greatest contribution to society has our full support. Consuming atop the hood of a Jaguar XJ, vintage 1987, is entirely optional.

Notables: Tin Roof, Gnarly Barley (Hammond)

Find a Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan, or try Memphis

Oxford may be a lot of things, but a bustling craft beer metropolis ain’t one of them. As far as we can tell, there’s no in-town option in the spirit of this exercise. So it’s a matter of availability and itinerary. If you’re not real concerned about finding a brewery but you want a good beer, our senior managing editor, Hugh Kellenberger, a former Mississippi resident, advises that Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan nut brown ale is the best beer in the state and is widely available on taps in Oxford and elsewhere. (As the Lazy Magnolia taproom is five hours due south, at-brewery consumption is not a recommendation we can make for people in town to watch the Rebels.) Otherwise, you’re stopping in Memphis somewhere on the trip. Backwater Brewing Co. reopened in Olive Branch, Miss., in October 2020 and is not terribly far from Memphis’ airport, though it’s open only Thursday through Saturday. If that isn’t an option, Wiseacre Brewing Co. in Memphis is a fairly short hop from the airport and doesn’t take you wildly far off-path on an Oxford excursion.

Notables (all in Memphis): Ghost River Brewery and Taproom, Bosco’s Restaurant and Brewing Company

Mississippi State

Mayhew Junction Brewing Co.

So it would seem it’s not terribly easy to enjoy Starkville-made beer in Starkville, at least not if you’re looking to hunker down at a taproom at the brewery itself. Still, try to bull’s-eye a time to tour Mayhew Junction. It opened in 2016, and Jean Mohammadi-Aragh Irby also shares brewer duties with fellow founder (and partner) Derek Irby. Otherwise, you’re looking at a long drive to Meridian or across state lines to Tuscaloosa to find some homegrown beer.

Notables: Threefoot Brewing (Meridian)

Flat Branch Pub & Brewing

Green chili works on a lot of levels, and certainly in tandem with beer. An actual Green Chili Ale, though, is an interesting and perhaps risky combination of flavors. It’s also arguably the most beloved brewed beverage in the town of Columbia, Mo., which is crawling with aspiring sportswriters (and, by extension, developing beer experts). One of our professional sportswriters, national college football writer David Ubben, can attest that the Green Chili Ale is indeed quite spicy. During fermentation, 50 pounds of Anaheim peppers, three pounds of jalapeno peppers and a pound and a half of serrano peppers are added. Flat Branch recommends adding some tomato juice for a “liquid enchilada.” And there are more traditional offerings, such as the Oil Change Oatmeal Stout, Mystic Pale Ale and Kristalweizen (a yeast-free Hefeweizen).

Notables: Logboat, Broadway, Bur Oak, Rock Bridge, Waypoint

South Carolina

River Rat Brewery

A wide selection, with 16 beers on tap at last check. Obligatory pimento cheese-infused food items on the menu (though there is much more than that, all the way down to kids’ menu selections, should you be toting future Gamecocks). It is also located less than a mile from Williams-Brice Stadium; perhaps no surprise, then, that The Athletic ’s intrepid South Carolina reporter, Josh Kendall, notes that River Rat’s Astronaut Sauce New England IPA is a favorite of certain refined palates on a certain local football staff. But you can go with the Blueberry Gose sour or a Lemon Grass lager if that helps beat the heat more effectively.

Notables: Steel Hands, Savage Craft Ale Works, Hunter-Gatherer

Crafty Bastard

Established in 2015 in Knoxville, Crafty Bastard sells itself as a brewery that employs locally sourced ingredients, “mad science and a middle finger to the mundane.” And that’s great, but you’ve still got to have the goods to go with the alluring names. Craft Bastard has the goods, through the garage doors that open to selections such as the Mayan Chocolate Chili Porter and the Smoky Mountain Shroom Ale — locally harvested chanterelle mushrooms are in that beauty. The pawpaw, an obscure and tropical-tasting fruit that can also be locally harvested, is the foundation of the delicious Pawpaw Belgian Ale. Founder Aaron McClain and company will stray from the region as needed as well, such as in the crisp, creative Marquis de Pils. Yes, it’s a pilsner, but French Strisselspalt hops give it something extra. The Sunshine of Your Love sour, infused with Earl Grey tea and featuring peach notes, is the unofficial Tennessee state champion of sours and welcomes all regional challengers.

Notables: Abridged, Pretentious, Schulz Brau, Printshop, Balter, Blackhorse, Alliance, Hexagon, Hi Wire, Next Level

Texas A&M

Savage Brew Lab (Bryan) + Blackwater Draw Brewing Co. (Bryan)

These two spots are a short drive from College Station to neighboring Bryan, and making a stop at both is entirely plausible if you get the timing right. Savage Brew Lab offers small-batch beers and a supremely nice outdoor patio space for evening imbibing, and you know its beer science is on point: Co-owner Laura Hill has a master’s degree in food science and a doctorate in bioengineering. Hill says her personal favorite is the Big Pink Energy gose, while co-owner Jason Kinderman would go with the Double Dry Hopped Mr. Nimbus hazy IPA. Blackwater Draw is a mile to the north, and we have to recommend any place whose debut beer is a coffee stout dubbed Contract Killer. But do be careful with your planning: Savage Brew Lab’s taproom is open only Thursday through Saturday. Certainly, that’s convenient for weekends spent watching the Aggies compete, but it’s an easily missed window if you’re not paying attention.

Notables: Klaus Brewing (Houston) and Fortress BeerWorks (Spring) are both, sort of, on the Houston-to-College Station drive

Jackalope Brewing Company

Mix a degree in biological anthropology from Harvard with Vanderbilt Law School and what do you get? Delicious craft beer may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but Bailey Spaulding’s talents and education have led her to fill kegs with exactly that. And Nashville beer drinkers can thank her for improving an already robust craft community. Spaulding, the first woman to own a brewery in Tennessee, is celebrating 10 years on that scene. And as anyone who has taken the Jackalope tour and sampled various Jackalope products can attest, the level of detail, precision and creativity involved match the pedigree. Just as Jackalope is named after the mythical combination of a jackrabbit and an antelope, Bearwalker Maple Brown Ale is named after sorcerers who, per Native American folklore, could shapeshift into bears. The pure maple syrup infusion is straight from Spaulding’s Vermont roots, and the chocolate malts and extra hops create a magnificent, definitive brew. The Thunder Ann American Pale Ale, Sarka Pilsner and Lovebird Strawberry Raspberry Wheat are all smart choices as well.

Notables: So many, including Yazoo, Southern Grist, Bearded Iris, Black Abbey, Tennessee Brew Works, New Heights, Mill Creek, Blackstone, TailGate, Fat Bottom and Living Waters.
